Brother Theodore Frank Dusek Sr., a resident of Caldwell, was selected for being the 1986 Outstanding Senior Citizen in Burleson County.

The honor was bestowed upon him for making a positive contribution to his community, club, county and for his skillful leadership.

The outstanding accomplishment has been his service to Burleson County. He has been very active for many years in several different areas of community service. He has served agriculture by being a member of the Farm Bureau, ASCS, and Fair Committee.

ln last week's editorial about the YADs the paragraph was somewhat misleading about Lodge No. 92 and the District III YAO, however, no date was mentioned in reference to it so be sure to remember that the District III YAO is this Sunday, June 29th. Please read Sister Rosemary Banik's letter in the Youth Section. There is a map in the Letter Section, also. For members and others traveling from the South on I-35W you can go West on 1-20 and Loop 820 (combined) before you get to Ft. Worth and stay on 820 where 1-20 veers left to Abilene and you will come to Azle Ave. and you are right at Roberts Cutoff and Lodge No. 92.

You will enjoy the day, rest assured.

*** With the Fourth of July fast approaching, youngsters and adults need to be aware of the dangers of fireworks. It is against federal law for consumers to use many exploding devices such as cherry bombs, silver salutes and ash cans. Only small fireworks -- sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets and cone fountains, for example -- are legal, and their legality varies by state and community. Ask your fire marshal or police department about local law.

When using fireworks, read directions and ignite away from people, homes and flammable materials. Keep water handy to drench any items that don't catch.

*** Because 75 percent of today's 16 year - olds have started to drink, parents should take steps to make sure their teenagers survive a summer of parties. Advises Mothers Against Drunk Driving: Discuss concerns about underage alcohol use with your child calmly -- not as an issue of right and wrong, but as one of health and safety. Urge your child to resist peer pressure when making decisions.

Before a party, call the host's parents to be sure they will supervise. Stress that if it should become necessary, your child can call home for a ride -­ with no questions asked until later, when heads are cool.

*** Heatstroke or sunstroke is a life threatening condition that occurs when the body's temperature - regulating mechanisms fail. Sweating stops, skin appears red. or mottled and dry, body temperature rises, the pulse is strong and rapid, the victim may become disoriented or lose consciousness. The National Safety Council advises that a victim be moved to a shaded spot and placed in cool water or sponged off.

Mouth - to - mouth resuscitation may be necessary, and medical attention should be sought immediately.

*** If you are driving into Canada or Mexico this summer don't assume that you are automatically insured. In Canada, a U .S. automobile policy· should suffice, says the Insurance Information Institute, but you will need proof of financial responsibility.

Most insurers provide a nonresident motor - vehicle liability - insurance card, which guarantees that the

company will meet Canadian requirements in case of accident.

Travelers to Mexico must buy a short term tourist policy, the cost of which will depend on length of visit, value of the car and extent of coverage. Agents of Mexican insurers can be found in most American border cities. You also will need a valid passport or birth certificate. Travelers to Canada should carry some proof of citizenship -- a passport, birth certificate, voter registration card -- to re - enter the United States. A driver's license won't do the trick.

*** For millions of citizens worried about being overweight, medical research has some good news and some bad: You may not need to lose as much weight as you thought. But you might find it is more difficult to get rid of those extra pounds for good.

As a result of new studies, what are considered healthy weights for men and women of various heights have been revised upward. For example, one of the life insurance companies boosted its recommended weights. The biggest changes were for shorter people. For a 5 - foot - 2 - inch man, for example, the suggested weight is between 125 and 148 pounds, compared with the former range of between 110 and 139 pounds. For a 5 foot woman, recommended weights increased from between 96 and 125 pounds to between 103 and 137 pounds. A study released last year by the Gerontology Research Center of the National Institute on Aging found that ideal weights for both sexes increase with age. ln this study, the suggested weight range for a 5 - foot - 9 - inch person in his or her 20s was 119 157 pounds. The range rose to 162 201 pounds tor someone age 60 to 69.

While these findings may indicate that many people have fewer pounds 10 shed than they think, they shouldn't become too complacent about weight control, researchers insist. ln fact, a 1985 conference at the National Institute of Health advised Americans who are overweight by 20 percent or more to seek medical treatment.

Obesity on that level, the conference agreed, increases health risks from heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems and cancer.

I ť you come from an obese family, it can be much tougher to lose weight, says a recent study published in the "New England Journal of Medicine."

According to the study, heredity is more important than lifestyle in determining a person 's tendency to be fat or thin. This doesn't mean that a person is doomed to be fat. It simply means that people who are prone to obesity must try harder than others to control their weight.

Although a variety of pills, devices, clinics and diets promise quick, easy weight loss, there are no miracle cures, warns the Food and Drug Administration. Crash diets may work instantly but often fail in the long run.

Ihey can't be maintained indefinitely and can even undermine a person's health. The most effective way to lose weight, say the experts, is to combine exercise with a well - balanced diet of reduced portions. To lose weight at the recommended rate of 1 to 2 pounds per . week, allow yourself 500 to 1,000 fewer ca_lories per day t~a? you. are now gettmg. If you are gaming weight on your current diet, cut down even ~ore than that. But d_on't cut b~ck to fewer than 1,200 calones a day without medical supervision.

From The President's Office Attention: Taroky Players-First SPJST Taroky Tournament The Supreme Lodge has authorized a Taroky Tournament for all SPJST members 18 years and older. The fee is $5 and should be paid to your lodge secretary. There will not be a tournament played at the local level; only at the state.

We feel that this will provide an opportunity for members to come together and revitalize the game of Taroky.

The tournament will be hosted by Lodge No. 29, Taylor, on July 26th beginning at 10 a.m.

All lodge secretaries must have the participants' names in before July 1st.

Lodge 13, Dime Box Holds Special Meeting The youth of Lodge 13 at Dime Box held a special meeting to elect officers for the 1986 - 87 term. Lodge 35, Elk June Meeting Our June meeting was held Friday, June 13th with 29 members and one visitor present. The meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreitz at 7:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Dawn Pavelka. A moment of silence was held for our deceased Sister Agnes Holub.

Our visitor was Wayne Lewis from Radio WACO. He explained the better points on radio advertisement for our dances.

Minutes were read by Secretary Rosemary Banik. They were approved as read. A letter was read from SL President Howard Leshikar regarding the second annual Domino Tournament.

Treasurer report was read by Treasurer Rosemary Banik and approved as read.

Youth report was given by Louise Burney. They held no meeting for June so they will meet June 21, 1986 at 2 p.m. We have 63 entries for the District 111 YAD. This will be held Sunday, June 29th at Lodge 92 in Fort Worth. Our lodge will have a bus leaving at 8 p.m. Hopefully, a number of people from Lodge 35 will attend and support our youth club.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Rosie Woods and Johnnie Stuckley.

We have one new member, John Bradley Jarrard. Three lifetime policies were issued to Brook Dulock, Casey J. McCauley and Cody J. McCauley.

We were sorry to learn that Janie Brewer had surgery. Sure hope you are better Janie. Cynthia Dunlap was in Dallas for surgery but was reported to be home and doing fine.

Special Entertainment Committee had a surprise for the dads. Prizes were won by: Oldest Dad -- Joe Tepe (73), Youngest Dad -- Sonny Pavelka (50), Most Children -- Fred Kubitza, Dad Traveling Furthest -- Albert Clemmons, and Most Grandchildren -Fred Kubitza. Congratulations to all!

Door prizes were won by Melissa Burney -- youth and Albert Banik -adult.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 40 To Host Family Day Members of Lodge 40: Many members requested we have the annual Family Day on Sunday.

The day has been set for Sunday, July 13, 1986 at 3 p.m. Fried chicken and drinks will be furnished by the lodge. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish to serve with the chicken.

The 50 - year membership pins will be presented.

June Meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers: The El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 meeting was held following Monday night bingo on June 16th.

Youth Kim Kacal led the Pledge of Allegiance and a minute of silence for our departed members followed.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers and trustees. All were present. The minutes of the May

meeting were accepted as read.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek gave a capsuled report of all accounts. The books were open for inspection.

First Vice President Bennie Reck reported more hall bookings and is still checking sign prices.

Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky reported all is well for the COVERED DISH SUPPER, JULY 13th at 3 p.m. Fried chicken will be provided. A 30 - minute Czech Heritage film will be provided by Temple. Youth Club members will decorate and provide entertainment (a fashion show).

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on camp and other upcoming trips (Blue Bell Creamery and Interspace). They have new youth club members and are expecting more.

Building and Grounds Chairperson Dutch Kopecky reports all is well.

Bingo Chairman James Kulcak expects bingo rules to undergo some change.

Thank you notes were received from scholarship recipients Toby Popp, Vicki Ermis, Audrey Merta, Sherryl Macha, Joey Adase, Kim Sifford and Brenda Stavinoha.

Secretary Bacak reported on the newly - formed Wharton County Czech Heritage Society and their purpose.

Youth Club will have the kitchen for YAD on July 20th. They will need help with refreshments.

Changes Meeting Date Dear Brothers and Sisters: President Jerry Pechal called the last regular lodge meeting to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1st.

Flag Bearers Heidi Schroeder and Tracy Klusacek led the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence to honor the memories of Sister Amalie Ondrasek (91) and Brother Wilton Charles "Charlie" Marek (68), both had passed away since the previous meeting. Brother Marek had been active in lodge activities serving as Trustee Committee on various committees, ticket chairperson and regular attendance at the lodge meetings. Our deepest sympathy to the bereaved families of these departed and your loved ones will be missed by all.

President Pechal welcomed all to the meeting. There were 62 lodge members and 7 visitors-Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Frank and Frances Kotrla, Lonnie, Olga and Freddie Schroeder present. The May meeting had an attendance of 70 members and 6 visitors. You all are invited to come to all lodge meetings.

Roll call of officers and sales representatives was read by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek and revealed Vice President Alfred Klusacek absent.

Brother Henry Mares was chosen to sit in as vice president.

Minutes were approved as read and the correspondence consisted of "thank you" cards from Sharon Pavelka for graduation gifts, from Brother Joe Marinik for the get - well cards and from the family of Brother Charlie Marek for flowers and for other courtesies shown the family, during their recent loss of their father, grandfather and brother. We had received the request of donations to two organizations, but these were deferred to the trustees to decide on the amounts along with other requests pending.

The following have converted previous polices -- Dianne M. Tyroch, Daniel L. Killebrew, Brad A. Killebrew, Kenneth J. Paysse Jr., Sandra L. Paysse, Marie Hegar, Frank E. Klinkovsky, Frank E. Klinkovsky III, Kellie M. Klinkovsky and Mark Alan Tepera. Sister Martha Marie Wofford transferred to our lodge from Lodge No. 24. A warm welcome to you all!

The Taroky Tournament will be held July 26th at Taylor Lodge No. 29.

Our lodge has four participants, the Dan Hejls and the Tim Reeses. Good luck!

The Fraternal Fest has now passed and I think everyone present enjoyed the event. There was enough going on to keep your attention. We at Lodge 47 wish to thank those who attended our Saturday dance before the event.

We had people from Pasadena, Fort Worth, Burleson and Rowena whom we knew. We are inviting you all to come again when you are in town.

Those on the sick list in May were Estelle Gilleland, Adrain Jez, Jerry Kopriva Jr., Louis Sirney Sr. Also, Jerry Trampota and Amalie Ondrasek, both of whom have passed away.

The officers' and chairpersons' reports were good. District II Director Brother Willie E. Kohutek spoke, briefly, on the refinancing of home loans.

Birthdays in June will be celebrated

by Sisters Martha Klusacek, Ruby Bolton and Lenora Talasek, also Brothers Calvin Skrabanek and Frank Klinkovsky.

Frank and Irma Klinkovsky have a wedding anniversary in June. All fathers were asked to stand in observance of Father's Day in June. Hope everyone enjoyed their special day. Happy Birthday, Anniversary and also Father's Day. May you all have many more!

Door prize winners were Brothers Edward Mihatsch and Henry Mares.

The next lodge meeting will be Monday, July 7th at 7:30 p.m., so DON'T come on the first Sunday, as usual.

After the meeting, we enjoyed the social prepared by J.D. and Vallie Chlapek. It was all good.

Dear Members: Lodge 81 meeting on June 10th at 7 p.m. was called to order by President Charlie Matcek.

Jo Ann Morgan led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Upon the resignation of Reporter Lydia Faler, Vlasta Nowotny was elected to serve as reporter.

All officers were present; reports and minutes were accepted as read.

President Charlie Matcek recognized our visitors, Brother Jerry Prochazka, District V director and his lovely wife, Delores and Brother Louis Hanus, our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director.

Brother Hanus spoke on the remodeling at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II, enlarging the Activity Room, Kitchen and adding a Beauty Shop Room for the convenience of rest home residents. He also spoke about the beautiful opening ceremony of the Czech Fest in Temple, Texas in which the Lodge 88 Choral Group with Helen Hegwood as soloist with her golden voice had a part.

Sunday, June 8th, E.J. Kadlecek Jr. was featured in "A Program Of Czechoslovakian Music" at Brown Auditorium here in Houston. E.J. with his accordian and Rennie Guenther and his tuba played traditional polkas and waltzes orginating in Bohemia. His mother, Louise Kadlecek, and his aunt and uncle, Amos and Della Kadlecek, dressed in their Czech costumes, joined him in a sing - a - long. This presentation of Czech music was part of The Lyric Art Festival. This festival proudly presented examples of the ethnic heritage as a tribute to the musical vigor of the Texas past.

Speaking of good music, our Lodge 88 Choral Group did us proud at the Fraternal Fest in Temple on June 8th.

Helen Hegwood, our lodge songbird, sang several songs also and received a standing ovation as did the Choral Group. I'm sure they all appreciated this; they are a hardworking group here in our lodge. Under the direction of Tim Kostom,this organization,along with the concert band, travels to many events in the area throughout the year.

They are the best "goodwill ambassadors". The choral group is taking the summer off from their practices until further notice.

Marian Kadlecek has been home from her three - month hospital stay for several weeks now. She's still hobbling around on crutches but looks like she will be throwing them out any day now.

Mr. and Mrs. John Vasula wedding their 44th celebrated anniversary with their family Saturday, May 31st at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Stark, one of the daughters. A barbecue dinner was served to the family. Those attending to help Bessie and John celebrate were Mr. and Mrs. Stark and daughter, Jennifer, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry McClellan and son, Jason and Mrs. Gaynelle Walters and daughter, Terri.

The families presented their parents a Microwave oven. An enjoyable evening was spent playing dominoes.

Steve and Estelle Kelly and Franklin and Almeida Bravenec flew to Las Vegas and reported all had a great time. They were all laughing about Estelle's "big" profit.

Our condolences go to Janet and Alvin Raymond in the loss of their five - month - old great - grandson. Little Samuel Tamberrello was a victim of sudden crib death. It's hard to understand something like this happening and we need to keep this family in our thoughts and prayers.

Our Brother William (Bill) Souchek was honored during our June monthly lodge meeting by Marvin Marek of the Czech Ex - Students Association of

Texas. Brother Souchek was presented a plaque recognizing the years of effort he has devoted to furthering the teaching and improvement of the Czech language here in Texas. Before his retirement and recent, illness, Brother Souchek taught Czech classes at Alvin Community College, San Jacinto Junior College, University of Houston, Spring Branch High School Evening Classes, Memorial High School and Stratford High School, plus lessons at Lodge 88. He also taught a day - school course at Black Junior High School. He is to be commended for his enthusiastic pursuit to keep the Czech language alive here in Southeast Texas.

The Men's Club had another party for their wives Wednesday, June 11th.

The ladies brought a dish and the cooking crew did the ribs and chickens. I heard the food was delicious as usual. I hated to miss it but I had a prior engagement out of town. Sister Rose Kostom was there as -was Sister Laura Warnasch, both recovering from surgeries. Sister Adella Kite was ill at home and Brother and Sister Keating were absent. Noble is fighting a bad case of poison ivy. We wish them all quick recoveries.

The painters are hard at work painting the interior of the lodge. The parking lot, in between showers, is almost finished. It's been a bad time for both the lodge and the workers but bear with them; the end is in sight.

92, Ft. Worth To Host District III YAD

Dear Members and Friends: Vitame Vas! Having completed a basic Czech Language Class along with 19 other members of Lodge 92, we are all trying to use the most common phrases as often as possible. Tarrant County Junior College of Fort Worth arranged the course for us. Your former Reporter Sherry Kubala Watkins sent her regrets to the members at the June meeting telling us that she is relinquishing her office, so I'll be finishing the year for her.

The June meeting which had been postponed to the third Sunday of the month instead of the usual second Sunday was well attended. It was good to see Joe Paprskar from Dallas after his quadruple bypass surgery. But now that Joe is much better, his wife, Nancy, is recovering from a broken collar bone and severe bruises following a fall. Bill McClendon was in the hospital for tests and get well cards were sent to Clem Oujesky at All Saints and to Joe Milan of Lodge 154.

Cards were also sent to Dodie Leonard who underwent triple bypass surgery and to Henry Langer at Cameron Memorial in Weatherford. Our Sunshine Chairman Martha Durham sent birthday cards to 13 members who were over age 65 in the month of June.

Sympathy cards went to the families of Anna Skrabanek, Joe Vokracka and the Clara Webb family of Weatherford. Congratulations to 6 members graduating from high school, namely, Kim Kubala, Alisa Dearing, Scott Lackey, John Anthony Tesar and Kathryn Dedericks. Mary Margaret Dedericks is receiving her degree from college.

San Antonio Lodge 133 Holds Meeting

Lodge 133 held their regular meeting at the hall located at 1314 Fair Avenue.

President Anthony Trilicek called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. He also led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also remembering our departed sisters and brothers with a moment of silence. It was a beautiful day as everyone seemed to be very happy and satisfied with all the rains we have had in San Antonio. Of

Grandmother Victoria Murphy's wedding anniversary, as the day of their marriage. Neva Kratky will be wed to LaWayne Timm August 19th while en route to Alaska aboard a cruise ship.

Let's all be sure to try to attend the District III Youth Activities' Day at our home, Lodge 92, on June 29th.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. and judging of entries starts at 11 a.m.

Lunch will be at noon. Following the meal,the talent portion of the meet will be presented. If you need information, call Youth Leaders Gordon and Cheryl Hubenak. Helen Paprskar —SPJSTcourse, some had a few inches too many, but generally speaking it was a good rain; something that we needed very badly.

The secretary reported that we have three applications for membership.

The applications were screened and recommended by the committee for acceptance.

On the sick list it was reported that Brother Emil Matula was in the hospital the previous month for a correction on his heart, but is doing very well, also President Anthony Trilicek, who had the same problem, is now out of the hospital and doing very well. We wish both of them a speedy recovery.

President Trilicek reported on the SPJST Festival which was held at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple on June 8th. It was a nice celebration and for a worthy cause.

Projects such as that are not done overnight or by just a few members. It does take a lot of time and planning and we wish to thank and congratulate our Supreme Lodge officers for organizing the Sesquicentennial Fest.

We should all be proud of such an event; proceeds to go to the Child Abuse Program.

Secretary D. Netek spoke on the importance of establishing the educational fund to support the project for a permanent chair at the Texas University. The lodge voted to send $100 for this project. As we understand it, the University will then be obligated to teach the Czech language.

Lodge 139, Danbury June Meeting The June 11th meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 was called to order by President Vincent Hechler. After the reading of the minutes of the last meeting by Secretary Tommie Lostak, Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave their reports.

Helen Filipp reported the lodge has lost three members since the last meeting, and Tommie Lostak led the membership in a minute of silent tribute to our deceased members.

President Hechler congratulated young member Tommie McLane Lostak for being the only Lodge 139 member to make the Danbury Little League All Star team. He is the son of Lonnie and Eloise Lostak.

Helen Filipp announced that four young Lodge 139 members, Allen and Ace Filipp, and Jason and Karen Filipp, are attending the SPJST Lone Star Youth Camp in La Grange the week of June 9th. All four are the grandchildren of Helen and Bill Filipp.

Tommie Lostak, who attended the SPJST Fraternal Fest in Temple on June 8th, gave an account of the activities and entertainment featured at the Sesquicentennial Celebration.

We wish to take this opportunity to commend the Supreme Lodge officers for the outstanding organizational and execution of the Fraternal Fest. It was a fun - filled day with excellent music provided by several bands throughout the day, special entertainment by the various lodges, a craft show, children's entertainment, and plenty of good food. Of special interest was the Czech Heritage film which told the history of the Czechs in Texas. It is our understanding that this film will be shown on television by the Public Broadcasting System throughout the state. It is extremely well done and will be well worth everyone's time to watch for it and take , the time to view it.

Hello From Lodge 183

Mid-Cities Dear Members: The meeting held Monday, June 9th was mostly business as usual. Reports were read and approved, bills paid and discussion on ways to have more socials and to increase revenue for the lodge.

Mary Ann Roznovsky won the door prize and Inez Greenlees won the $19 cash prize.

There were three more members of the Torres family approved, namely, Carlos, Manuel and Hortencia Torres.

We want to welcome them to Lodge 183.

There was also a motion made and passed for the lodge to sponsor a young adults' baseball team; there are some young men who wish to play baseball and use this way to help the lodge. Let's give them our full support!

One of Lodge 183's young members, Darlene Roznovsky, graduated from high school this year and was awarded $50 from the lodge. Congratulations, Darlene!

There was a group of members from Lodge 183 at the Fraternal Feast in Temple, namely, Inez Greenlees, Pat Sill, B.J. and Betty Hlavaty and family, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, also Gracie and I. We enjoyed it very much; there was plenty of food, desserts, music for dancing, films and crafts displayed. Several members of Lodge 183 displayed their crafts. There was something for everyone to see or do; if you missed this one you missed a very good time.

Gracie and I were honored to lead the grand march at 2:30 p.m. to the music of the Czech Harvesters; we had a great time and are looking forward to next year.

Lodge 88 Birthday

Club News President Rita Alexander called the meeting to order on June 11, 1986.

Sister Pearl Hanka read the minutes from the previous meeting. Secretary Rosalee Kostom who had a freak accident could not be at the meeting.

We hope by now she is all right.

Sister Lillie Spies gave the treasurer's report and it was a good one. She thanked everyone who helped with the pastry on Splash Day. We want to say thanks to the ladies who brought cakes who are not birthday club members.

Sister Mary Kosut, our sunshine reporter, sent sympathy, get well and birthday cards to the members.

The meeting closed with singing "Happy Birthday" to the sisters who had a birthday in June.

The next meeting at Lodge 88 will be July 2 -- Games Party/Luncheon, and July 9 Games Party/Meeting/Luncheon.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: The June meeting was attended by 35 members and guests, Mary Krivanek and Kyle Cleveland.

A new member welcomed was Billie Starr and also attending were Merle Kovar, Martha Boenisch and Ann Sustala who have not been able to attend for several months.

At the July meeting, a cold luncheon will be served. The hostesses will be Ann Sustala, Martha Boenisch and Rosemary Gribble.

The door prize was won by Rosie Steinman.

The Southern District of American Sokol Slet exhibition held today (June 15th) in Ft. Worth was indeed a success.

This year's slet was dedicated to Brother Charles (Bill) Renfro and Brother Donald Steinman Sr.; also, Larry Laznovsky of Ennis was given a merit plaque for distinguished service as Director of Men in gymnastics.

The Fourth of July when the U.S. citizens will be celebrating Independence Day, Roy and I will be in Zurich, Switzerland attending the VI International Sokol Slet.

There will be no report from me prior to the August meeting.

Dallas Circle Of Czech

Women News Well, hello again! My how time does roll by. In spite of the rainy morning, our Circle members came out to the meeting June 5th. Our guests were Bob Zvolanek, Roy Alholm, Phil Reames, Gilbert Kalich, Alvin Elsik, Charlie Kocian, Julius Podhrasky and Amelia Strange.

President Zvolanek extended a special welcome to everyone for coming out to the meeting, especially Mary Kubacak (who has not been with us for a few meetings). We were asked to bow our heads in a moment of silence for our departed Sister Millie Bartek and Mrs. Joe Pavlik (daughter of our Sister Adela Lesikar). As of this writing, I am so very sorry to report that we have lost another dear sister, Anna Belle Bubak. Sister Bertha Malik also lost her brother, Cleo Zetak.

Greetings were relayed to us by the following sisters who were not able to be at our meeting, namely, Alice Roberts, Ella Bartos, Josephine Kankrlik, Rose Noska, Millie Noska, Zdenka Skotak, Hattie Ground, Libby Slovak, Frances Jurcik, Martha Malooly, Agnes Finch and Evelyn Trojacek.

There were no minutes read at our June meeting due to the absence of Secretary Roberts. Treasurer Vicki Kohn gave her report.

Correspondence was read by Mary Sebestik as follows: A thank you from Zdenka Skotak for the donations made in memory of her son, a letter from Eleanor Rusnak in regard to the annual 4th of July Picnic at Sokol Dallas, a letter from the American Cancer Society, a letter from Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, Ronald McDonald's Home for parents with ill children, the Visiting Nurses Association, and the National Political Congress for Black Women.

Membership Chairman Bertha Malik was not present. There was nothing to report since all members are paid up for the year.

Sunshine Report -- Adelle Vlk sent a card to Lillian Spain.

Birthday Card Chairman Bessie Kalich announced June birthday celebrants, Ella Bartos, Anne Oates, Frances Konakovsky and Lillie Drzewicki. The birthday cards Bessie mails out each month are so welcomed by our sisters. I, especially, appreciated the little message Bessie put in my card.

Mary Sebestik announced the June hostesses are Bessie Reames, Aggie Mach, Anne Skrabanek and Martha Kocian.

The Telephone Committee called members informing them of the death of Sister Millie Bartek and her funeral arrangements.

Bessie Reames reported on the Czech Cultural meeting and the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council Picnic. The annual Flag Day Picnic was held at the Catholic Czech Club on June 12th.

Sister Adelle Vlk stated she found the brick our Circle of Czech Women purchased when she was at the Fair Park recently. She said there would be an Open House on June 8th for those wishing to see the bricks already laid out.

Our trip to South Fork Ranch will be later in the fall.

Mary Sebestik asked if we still would like to continue the covered dish lunches. All agreed to continue.

In August we will bring sandwiches.

Ice tea, coffee will be furnished.

August is still always such a hot month. Remember how it is said: "It's almost too hot to eat." This is the reason for sandwiches (light lunch).

President Zvolanek read out to us how she worded the ad that our Circle took out in the Sesquicentennial Souvenir Book. She reminded us that we can still purchase ads in the book and that our Circle will receive for the ad.

We discussed the 4th of July Annual Picnic. Our members preferred a covered dish lunch for the picnic. Our delegates, Dorothy Reznik, Anne Zvolanek and Bertha Podhrasky representing Circle of Czech Women, will present our wishes at the picnic planning meeting. As of this writing, we have already had our meeting and it was decided that the annual 4th of July Picnic, held at the Sokol Zizka, will be a covered dish affair. Bring either a vegetable, salad or pastry. Meat, coffee and tea will be furnished. Hot dogs will be available for the children.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. We will eat at 12 noon. Various games and activities are planned for the children and the young - at - heart. What's more significant of a 4th of July Picnic than a watermelon eating contest, egg throwing contest, horseshoe pitch, water slide for the water - loving kids, and much, much more to keep you rolling in fun. If you have not attended one of these picnics, you have really missed out on a heap of fun. Be sure and mark your calendar for Friday, July 4th. You can still go out to the State Fair for the fireworks that night.

This annual affair at the Sokol Dallas is sponsored by these organizations: SPJST Lodge 130, SPJST Lodge 84, Sokol Zizka (Dallas), RVOS No. 142, WFLA No. 401, Dallas Circle of Czech Women, Catholic Czech Club and SVPS of Dallas.

The door prizes this month were brought by Helen Vrla Sr., Aggie Mach (2), Vicki Kohn and Bessie Kalich. They were won by Dorothy Reznik, Vicki Kohn, Helen Vrla Sr., Helen Oates and Aggie Mach.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our June and July celebrants (July because there will be no meeting).

Last month I failed to mention that our Circle purchased an ad in the Sokol Slet Souvenir Book. We also made a donation to the Dallas Brethren Christian Sisters in memory of our departed Sister Millie Bartek.

Our President Anne presented a brief history of the Statue of Liberty and how she is 100 years old this year.

This wonderful lady has welcomed many immigrants to our beloved United States of America.

Congratulations to Sister Suzanne Novak who passed her USA citizen's test. She is so proud to be a real American now!

Esther Cunningham is proud of her daughter who has graduated from Medical School and will intern at Parkland Hospital.

Why A Czech Chair?

[A Continuation By Calvin Chervenka] Revival in Heritage [1967 - 1986] Increasing attendance at the major and local Czech festivals has been the popular expression and indicator of all people's (including non - Czechs) increasing interest in the Czech heritage.

There have been obvious and determined efforts to incorporate more heritage emphasis and activities in these celebrations. These festivals, then, have served as an orientation or starting point for many persons entering or returning to be active in Czech language and/or heritage activities (Czech Activists).

Because there have been a large number of junior college, high school, and community type credit and non credit Czech language and heritage courses, many persons have been exposed in a nostalgic or charismatic way to the Czech heritage study, which usually is included in any Czech language course. Most if not all of these students have in some way become Czech Activists.

First time and returning visits of students and other travellers to Czechoslovakia have strengthened their interests in history, genealogy, and heritage in general. Visits to the U.S. of Czechoslovak orchestras, dancers, athletes, and other groups and individuals has enriched our heritage and has done much to keep the "American Dream" alive in Czechoslovakia.

Some of the many other things which have had a very complementary, positive effect of increasing interest in the Czech language and heritage are: 1. Czech Music. Formation of new Texas - styled polka and waltz orchestras, as well as a lesser number of brass and concert type orchestras.

Issuance of frequent recordings by Texas orchestras. Reprints of classic recordings. Family orchestra history compilations.

2. Czech Singing. Increased singing along with orchestral music.

Organization of new choral groups and increased numbers of performances by them. Publication of

a Czech song book . for the Sesquicentennial year. Collections of song words, music and recordings.

3. Polka Dancing. Shows some statewide decline but also shows instances of returned popularity following a decline. Increasing popularity of modern, rock, or nuclear polkas with young people.

4. Polka Festivals. Travel of Texas groups (fans and bands) to polka festivals in Lincoln, Nebraska, and other places in the Midwest and Northeast. Return visits from other states of polka festivals in Texas.

Polka Masses.

5. Many, many other activities which I shall simply list below: Symposiums, Czech Periodic Dramatic Productions, Czech Language and Czech Related Newspapers, ROMAN Catholic Czech Masses, Research, Newly Written Books, Reprints of Classic Czech Related Books, Many Genealogical Workshops throughout the State, Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) Organization of Czech Texans for Radio Sesquicentennial, Czech Program.

Era of Cooperation The continued, increased, and sustained activity of the various organizations has done much to encourage the many who had given up hope of any renascence of interest in Czech language and cultural heritage.

The Czech - founded fraternal and mutual organization generally have been the carriers of organizational work among the Czechs of Texas.

Most of them list a constitutional responsibility to help preserve the Czech language and heritage. Their recently increased spirit of cooperation and increased devotion and pursuit (funding and other support) of the heritage phase of their work has been most refreshing and helpful to other organization engaged in that cause.

Leaders and congregations, on both local and statewide levels, of the predominently Czech religious orders have been very interested, cooperative, and helpful in the revival and

Independent educational organizations, such as CESAT and CEFT, have had a unifying and stimulating effect by their cooperation with other Czech organizations and student groups, in their providing grants and student loans, and in their funding (in part) of symposia.

Independent historical/heritage organizations such as the Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHSOT), and its members at affiliated societies, have done much to research, disseminate, and popularize the early history and genealogical records of the Czechs of Texas.

Many, many other groups and individuals have done much to help initiate, expand, continue, and popularize this entire movement. To try to name them would surely result in the omission of many deserving persons. I think most Czech Texans know their names and know them as the Czech Activist leaders of Texas.

Conclusion Even though this article has become far too long for easy reading, it still fails to mention any points relevant to the Czech Chair.

I hope these other points will be brought out and the entire project will be fully discussed and explained so all Czech Texans will realize its merit and will wish to give generously for this cause.

Organizes, Elects Provisional Slate Of Officers CHS

An organizational meeting of the Czech Heritage Society was held Thursday night in the Wharton County EC Edison Room.

State officers of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas were present for the occasion. Marjorie Matula of Victoria, state president, and Victor Peter of Pasadena, state vice president and membership chairman, explained the purpose and objectives for organizing, tracing family history and the history of state membership.

Opening remarks were made by Laverne Bacak, El Campo Branch librarian and area coordinator, who introduced the state officers.

A temporarily organized slate of officers was elected. They are the Rev. Benton Thurmond, president; Ed Hrncir, vice president; Laverne Bacak, secretary; Lisa Stancliff, treasurer; Rita Vanek, reporter; and John Marek, director.

Permanent officers will be recognized at the September 27th all day Czech workshop at the SPJST Hall in Hillje. Recognized Czech genealogists will be on hand at that time to help anyone who is interested.

And Orchestras Of Texas Joe D. Janak, Jr. and Joseph Pustka of Victoria, Texas, members of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society, are compiling a history of Texas Czech bands and orchestras.

The period covered will be from about 1860 to the present time and is to be published during this Sesquicentennial Year.

Among present day Czechs there are many whose ancestors or other relatives were in bands or orchestras.

Information on these organizations is needed so that future generations will be able to learn about them. At present, they have information only on the following bands and orchestras: Kolacny Orchestra, Jodie Mikula, Henry Brosch, John Gregurek Orchestra, The Czechmates, Joe Patek Band, Henkhaus Play Boys, Naiser Brass Band, The Guy Band, Tony Janak, The Ellinger Combo, Taiton Brass Band, The Polka Patriot Orchestra, Divis Orchestra, Vanek Polka Band and VFW Toppers.

Mr. Janak and Mr. Pustka know there are several hundred bands and orchestras that they have not heard from and they would appreciate obtaining this information as soon as possible. Any pictures received will be returned on request. Be sure the name and address is on the back.

Music/ Celebrations

Czech

A two - day Czech Music Symposium in Bryan, a three - day Czech Flavor Celebration at the State Fair and various festivals throughout the state generated a great deal of enthusiasm during a weekend meeting of Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA).

TOCA officials are excited about their success in promoting and coordinating Czech related events during the Sesquicentennial Year.

Thousands of Czech Texans are expected to gather at the State Fair at the Cotton Bowl on October 3 - 5, 1986. "This spectacular is expected to he the biggest Czech event in Dallas since the 1936 Centennial," said Calvin Chervenka, TOCA Public Relations officer. "Events and activities being planned for the weekend include a 30 - day Czech exhibit at the Fair, a Historical Symposium, a gigantic Genealogy workshop, Czech Dramatic Productions, a Catholic Czech Mass, bus tours, banquets, dances and other socials." The entire affair is being sponsored and planned by the Dallas area American - Czech Culture Society .

The Czech extravaganza at the State Fair will be followed by an Educational and Entertaining Music Symposium set for November 14 - 16, 1986 at the Brazos Center in Bryan.

Symposium Director Clint Machann said: "The, program will include musical performances by Czech Concert Orchestras from Dallas and Houston and well - known Choral Groups. We will also have lectures, a panel discussion on classical composers, interviews and multi media presentations."

There will also be plenty of opportunity for fun and dancing with popular groups such as the Vrazel Polka Band from Cameron. See you at the Czech Day in Dallas and then the Symposium in Bryan.

Polka Band To Appear In Houston

[News Release] As part of the 24th annual SS Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Weekend, Knights of Columbus Council 2917, 607 East Whitney Drive in Houston, is sponsoring a dance Saturday, July 12, 1986 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Music will be provided by the fabulous Joe Fedorchak Orchestra from Youngston, Ohio. An encore dance will follow Sunday, July 13th from 6 to 10 p.m.

The Fedorchak Orchestra has been together since 1963 and has appeared throughout the U.S. at "Oktoberfests" and other major

polka events. The band has been a real favorite throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and other Midwest areas like Wisconsin. This will be their first appearance in Texas. Joe's style is really hard to beat. It features a tempo, rhythm and sound that is sure to have Houston polka fans constantly on the dance floor. The polka is an import from Bohemia that has fused with American entertainment. It is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, having been included in the "Grammy" Awards for the first time in 1986. Anyone who enjoys a good time will certainly not want to miss this opportunity to see and meet one of the best.

Saturday and a variety of ethnic foods will be available, including a full dinner at 5:30 p.m. in honor of Bishop Edward Pevec of Cleveland. Special Ellis Island Ceremony Sought WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House on Monday approved a bill to relax immigration law briefly so a group of immigrants from all over the nation can be naturalized July 3 on Ellis Island.

The bill would suspend for 48 hours a provision in the law limiting the ceremony on the New York Harbor landmark to residents of New York.

The citizenship ceremony conducted

by Chief Justice Warren Burger is scheduled as part of the Fourth of July weekend festivities marking the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island centennial.

Ellis Island was chosen for the naturalization because it was the official entry point for about 17 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954.

The Senate is expected to approve the bill this week.

The above short article which appeared in the middle of May this year in The Houston Post newspaper pertains to the important part of the U.S. immigration policy making which affected many of our forefathers after Ellis Island became the official port of entry for the immigrants from Europe.

Among the millions of these immigrants was a multitude of Czechs from the old country which was, at that time, and up to the 28th of October 1918, part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. This way came across the ocean in 1905 my good friends who rest in everlasting peace for quite a few years now in the Northwestern Wisconsin. Through Ellis Island also came few good acquaintances of mine at the time when Hitler started WWII in 1939 in Europe. In memory of remembrance of these people and untold numbers of other Czechs. I did a little research concerning Ellis Island and few related facts which hopefully will interest the readers of the SPJST Vestnik.

Ellis Island lies about 1 mile (1, 6 km) southwest of the Battery Park of 21 acres located on the southern tip of the Manhattan Island which lies between the Hudson and East Rivers forming part of New York City.

Although Ellis Island is way closer, about 1,300 feet (396m) to Jersey City, New Jersey, it is by a pact of 1834 under jurisdiction of New York. This 11 - HA (27 - acre) island was once a picnic ground for the early Dutch settlers while Manhattan Island, named this way by Dutch. After the Manhattan tribe of Algonquian Indians who used to live on this island, with the surrounding area belonged to Holland. The chief settlement of this Dutch Colony was New Amsterdam on 13 miles long Manhattan Island, renamed New York when seized by the British in 1664. Do you know that Ellis Island was known variously as Bucking, Gibbet and Oyster Island until it was named for Samuel Ellis, who owned the island in 1770s? (There was most likely also an original Indian name of the island, but it did not survive.) One of the mentioned names brings forth the pirate era, mainly in the first part of the 18th century, when several of these vultures, including the infamous James M. Anderson, were exposed on the gallows there until their corpses did rot away. (The word Gibbet means a structure like gallows, from which bodies of criminals -- in this case bodies of pirates -- already executed were hung and exposed to public scorn.) Other peculiarity of this island was that for a time, ships' ballast was dumped there.

Ellis Island was purchased by the federal government from New York State in 1808 for use as government arsenal and fort. Before this transaction the island was used as the military recruiting headquarters for New York City. Some of the volunteers found military life too harsh and notices of desertions were not uncommon in the city newspapers.

A typical one, published in 1798 read: Ten Dollars Reward, is offered for the apprehending of Thomas Ryne, of the Corps of Artilerists and Engineers, who deserted from the Rendezvous on Ellis Island. He is native of Ireland, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches and a half, a dark complexion, slovenly habit and indulent deportment, has dark hair and blue eyes. -- D. Hale, Lieut, in said Corps.

-- After the creation of the Immigration Bureau (1891), the immigration station was moved from Castle Garden (at Battery Park, Manhattan) to Ellis Island. This place was, from then on, a major immigration station for the United States from 1892 to 1943 and an immigrant detention station until 1954. According to the New Century Cyclopedia of Names, Copyright 1954

by Appleton - Century - Crofts, Inc., more than a million individuals were processed here annually at the height of immigration to this country. Twelve million immigrants came through Ellis Island from 1895 to 1924, when prospective immigrants began to be inspected in their countries of origin.

Many of the island's buildings, which included dormitory space for 1,000 people, were destroyed in an 1897 fire and rebuilt in 1900.

After the Immigration Reception Center moved to Manhattan in 1943 and the Immigration Detention Station at Ellis Island closed down in 1954 the buildings stood empty until 1977 when they were opened to tourists by the National Park Service. Ellis Island became part of the Statue of Liberty Movement in 1965. Statue of Liberty is though located on another small island in New York Harbor. This island formerly called Bedloe's Island was renamed Liberty Island after the world famous Statue of Liberty was erected there. This island is located 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) southwest of in my

writeup already mentioned Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The Statue of Liberty, 150.9 feet (46 meters) high, was placed on the Liberty Island to face down the New York Harbor as a symbol to arriving voyagers of the freedom and opportunity that were offered by the U.S. This figure was originally called Liberty Enlightening the World; it was conceived as a gift from the French to the American people to honor the 1876 centennial celebration. The exterior copper shell, in the form representing a classical, draped female figure carrying a torch aloft, was designed (1870 - 1875) by the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi; the wrought - iron pylon inside was the work of Gustave Eiffel, the famous designer of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the stone - and - concrete pedestal was planned by the American architect Richard Morris Hunt. The statue was completed in Paris, France in 1884 and unveiled in New York Harbor on October 26, 1886 in the presence of the sculptor. It was dedicated officially two days later, on October 28th, by the President (Stephen) Grover Cleveland (1837 - 1908) during his first turn in the presidental office. (Grover Cleveland was 22nd President 1885 - 89 and 24th President 1893 - 97). The funds for the Statue of Liberty were donated by the French nation and those for the base were raised in the United States. As mentioned before, the figure depicts a regal woman draped in classical robes and wearing a crown with seven spokes. At her feet lie the broken shackles of slavery. In her uplifted right hand she carries a torch, and in her left hand she holds a lawbook inscribed "July 4, 1776" -- the date of the Declaration of Independence. This statue, which has turned a rich green color from exposure to the weather, is made of large hammered copper plates 3/32 inch (0.23 centimeter) thick, which are welded to an iron framework that is bolted to a stone pedestal. The pedestal is 89 feet (27.1 meters) high, and the base is 65 feet (19,8 meters) above the level of the bay, making the elevation 305 feet 1 inch (92, 99 meters) above the sea level. The figure weighs 225 tons (205 metric tons) and is 151 feet 1 inch (46, 05 meters) high to the top of the torch.

At night the statue is floodlit, and the torch and crown are illuminated from within. Visitors travel by boat from Battery Park (Manhattan) to Liberty Island, where an elevator takes visitors to the top of the statue's pedestal.

From there, 2 spiral staircases climb through the hollow figure into the statue's crown, where windows provide a spectacular view of the harbor.

In 1903 Emma Lazarus' sonnet to the Statue of Liberty, The New Collosus, was inscribed in its pedestal.

In 1924 the statue and island were named a national monument. This national monument was extended in 1965 to include nearby Ellis Island. -A disastrous naval accident related to this article did take place in the middle of May. A ninety foot (27, 4 meters) long schooner "Pride of Baltimore" returning from a 15 - month goodwill mission in Europe bowled over by freak winds on 14th of May east of Bahamas, about 280 miles (440, 5 kilometers) from Puerto Rico. Eight of its 12 crew members were rescued on 19th of May by the Norwegian tanker Toro Horton from a life raft that drifted almost 5 days in the Atlantic.

As the 8 people in the raft had enough water and thick biscuits for 48 hours only, they had each one per day just a half cup of water and a bite of biscuit.

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 25, 1986 As some crew members of the Pride of Baltimore were rescued to tell about the sudden storm "White Squall" that sunk the schooner, so the loss of this ship will not likely add to the lore of the Bermuda Triangle. This triangle, usually defined as the area between Miami, Bermuda and San Juan Puerto Rico, is a notorious stretch of ocean that, for centuries has been, by reputation, a daunting nemesis to ships and airplanes. Research has chronicled more than 100 cases in the last century in which ships or planes disappeared in that area, often without a sign of distress. Sailors and fliers have reported many times in the past strange happenings in the triangle which led to several theories about the unexplained events, there. "Countless theories attempting to explain the many disappearances have been offered throughout the history of the area," says a prepared Coast Guard statement about the triangle. "The most practical seem to be environmental and those citing human, error." The area is buffeted by strong Gulf stream currents and winds, unpredictable weather is the norm and the uneven ocean floor produces rough seas and navigational hazards. One of the most notorious incidents in the triangle occurred in 1945, when 5 U.S. Navy bombers on a training mission disappeared in clear weather. A rescue plane sent out the same day also was lost. A search contingent of an estimated 260 planes found no clue of any of the six planes, according to various accounts of the incident.

Despite the odd occurrences in the triangle, the area remains well traveled. Ocean liners regularly sail through the area and a shipping lane from New York to the Panama Canal passes through the triangle.

The Pride of Baltimore, a replica of a 19th century schooner with a 90 foot deck, built in 1976 to celebrate America's Bicentennial, was expected in Baltimore June 14th, later to take part in 100th anniversary ceremonies for the Statue of Liberty. Texas will be represented at these ceremonies by the 1877 square rigger Elissa, which left from Pier 21 in Galveston on 26th of May on the first leg of her voyage to New York City where she will join in the July 4th centennial celebrations of the Statue of Liberty. This sail ship, a project of the Galveston Historical Foundation, is first to stop at Miami; the other goodwill and publicity stops are as follows: Charleston, South Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; Annapolis, Maryland; Washington, D.C.; and Norfolk, Virginia. The 109 year - old vessel Elissa will be the oldest of the large Class A vessels (more than 170 feet in length) and the only restored 19th century square rigger in the Operation Sail 1986 ceremonies of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. This tall ship from Texas is also sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and another organization called National Maritime Historical Society as the vessel that best of preservation represents the American maritime heritage.

The Elissa will be mannd by a crew of 30 with about 15 members remaining constant throughout this exciting voyage. The youngest member of the crew according to a recent article in the Houston Post will be a fourteen - year - old Don VanDelinder, who will join the sail ship in Baltimore, Maryland. This youngster is a sophomore at Elsik High School in Alief. (This school where I taught Czech evening classes in 1983, was named after the Czech pioneer Elsik family. --- Czech classes are being

taught since 1984 at the North Hastings High School. Both of these schools are part of the Alief Independent School District.) -- The Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island centennial is an important aspect of the American history because it represented, to the European arrivals, the hope of the better life at these shores. People across our nation are very fond of the Statue of Liberty because it stands for freedom and justice for all. When they heard the statue needs refurbishing, donations poured in from all over the nation.

Our SPJST pledged and contributed more than 8 thousand dollars to this noble cause. We, the members of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, are proud of our part in the restoration of the beloved Statue of Liberty.

Registration for crafts, Beseda, talent and royalty will begin at 10:30 a.m. ending promptly at 11:30 a.m.

Barbecue beef with all the trimmings will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Program will start at 12:30 p.m. with Beseda followed by Individual Talent and Group Talent. We will then have a short break so the royalty contestants can change and for us to have refreshments.

After we reconvene, door prizes will be given and the craft judges will be introduced. Royalty competition is next on the agenda.

After its completion, the winners in craft and talent competition will be announced. At this point we will introduce our judges for talent and royalty, then read the king and queen contestants' autobiography sheets, then we will introduce their parents and their duke and duchess. We will then be ready to announce our new 1986 - 87 King and Queen.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood YC Activities The youth club meeting was held at 8 p.m. June 6th with a fair attendance.

May 7th, our youth brought cakes to the Rest Home and May 9th, corsages they made for the mothers at the rest home.

We had two members graduating from our club, namely, Shirley Dobecka from West High School and Darrell Uptmor from Connally High School. Congratulations and best of luck to both of you! We took the graduates out to eat at Waco and they all enjoyed it.

A few of us attended the Fraternal Fest at the Mayborn Convention Center. Our youth club took desserts to the District Youth Club to sell.

Those who attended were Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka, Sister Rose Uptmor and Sister Willie Mae Schuetz.

Our club members are getting ready for YAD. They started on their craft and are practicing talent. District III YAD will be June 29th at Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth.

The youth made planters with ivy in them, also coffee cups with silk flowers on them. These were the mothers' gifts and for fathers, the youth made pencil holders and toast pickers.

Birthday celebrant for June is Elaine Stuckly. Lanette Hykel brought the cake.

Friday, May 31st we had an End - of - School Dance. We sold 85 tickets.

Everyone really had fun.

June 8th six of our members attended the Fraternal Fest in Temple.

One of our members had a craft on display.

June 11th we had eight members at our regular meeting. We plan to go to Schlitterbahn on July 19th with our families.

July 13th YAD will be held at our lodge. The meal will be $4 for adults and $2.50 for children. You will have a choice of fried chicken or fried catfish fillet. I hope to see you then.

The results of elections are: President Christy Marek, Vice President Kristi Waits, Secretary Kim Schneider, Treasurer Janet Macek, Reporter Melanie Zavodny and Sergeant - at Arms Kim Hubnik.

Before our regular meeting Wednesday, June 11, 1986, these officers were installed by our DYC Frankie Klinkovsky. Each of the new officers were presented a small bouquet of bright yellow flowers by the lodge youth leaders. The officers then occupied their office in our regular meeting.

President Christy Marek called the meeting to order. Secretary Kim Schneider called the roll. Present were 25 members and 2 adults, Nancy Posvar, and our special guest, Frankie Klinkovsky. We have another member, Amber Giestman. Welcome to our club.

The minutes were read and approved. Then Treasurer Janet Macek gave her report.

Our swimming party at Walker Pool in Temple is planned for June 29th from 8 to 10 p.m. All youth members and parents are invited and you may bring a guest. Our youth leader reminded us that camp forms needed to be turned in no later then July 13th.

YAD forms need to be turned in by June 25th. The Fraternal Fest held June 8th was a great success.

The District II YAD will be July 13th at the Academy Lodge No. 177.

Everyone is intended to enter this year's YAD. We will have a queen to represent our lodge this year. She is Kim Schneider.

The DYC told us about some upcoming events -- YAD, camp, State YAD which is August 17th the Frank Mayborn Center in Temple.

September 14th is the District II fall meeting at Seaton Lodge No. 47. Our District II Six Flags' trip does not have a date set.

Our meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p m Lucky winners of door prizes were Melissa Holtman and Rodney Posvar. Our birthday celebrant for June is Chris McNeill whose birthday is June 29th. Happy Birthday, Chris!

30 YC June Meeting Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Lodge 30 Youth Club met Sunday, June 1st at 2:30 p.m., at the Taiton Community Center. President Marcy Dorotik called the meeting to order.

Secretary Jean Dorotik read the minutes. Linda Treumer gave the treasurer's report and Jennifer Dluhos presented the assistant treasurer's report.

We discussed camp and the Fraternal Fest.

For the June project members were asked to make something for their Dads. Contest winners in 6 to 9 were: 1st - Jeannie Dorotik, 2nd - Craig Dorotik, 3rd - Curtis Dorotik. In 13 to 17 winners included: , 1st - Jean Dorotik, 2nd - Marcy Dorotik.

After our meeting we made pencilholders for craft.

Refreshments were served by Mrs. Rodney Dluhos and Mrs. Raymond Krpec.

Dear Members, The June II, 1986 meeting of Lodge No. 74 Youth Club was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by President Sherry Michka.

Matt West led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed mem bers.

The register was read. There were 13 members and 4 adults present. Guest introduced was Thone Baker. The minutes were approved.

Sergeant - at - Arms Jenifer West gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $452.33.

Fund - raising events of the month were selling tickets for an afghan.

Our Youth Leader Sherry McKenney reported on the YAD cards, practice Friday at 2 p.m., and tickets for afghan.

The youth members enjoyed having cokes and cookies. The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting June 12th. Due to the fact that we attended camp the first week of June, the meeting was held the second week.

We had 3 new members from Blessing present. They are Robert Thurmond, Abby Ackerman and Cody Ackerman. We also had guests.

At the meeting we discussed camp, YAD, the Fraternal Fest and our Educational Tour. We also discussed Scrapbook Committee meetings and Family Night at Hillje on July 13th.

Afterwards, refreshments were served by Mrs. Alfred Brandt.

Our next meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Charlie Bucek Jr. Charlie Bucek Jr., 76, of Wharton died Monday afternoon, April 7, 1986 at his residence following an extended illness.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, April 9th at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church with Celebrant Rev. Timothy Bucek assisted by Rev. Edward Kucera and Rev. Sean Donahue officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Brother Bucek was born June 21, 1909 in Hungerford to Charlie and Mary (Hanslik) Bucek.

He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and Hungerford and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for more than 50 years. As a young man, Brother Bucek worked for the J.D. Hudgins Ranch, the Phenix Dairy, American National Insurance Company and as a deputy sheriff under T.W. "Buckshot" Lane.

He was owner of Bucek's Auto Parts for almost 40 years and was a sales representative for the SPJST Lodge No. 151 Fraternal Insurance for 30 years. Mr. Bucek was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 3262, the Holy Name Society, and a former board member of the Czech Catholic Nursing Home in Hillje.

Brother Bucek was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph, and three sisters and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie (Schattel) Bucek of Wharton; a daughter, Carolyn Bucek of Wharton; sons and daughters - in - law, Charles Lynn and Henrietta Bucek of East Bernard, Edwin and Margaret Bucek, David and Janie Bucek, all of Wharton; Michael and Johnnie Sue Bucek of Arlington and the Rev. Timothy Bucek of Galveston; a sister, Mrs. Viola Macha of Wharton and 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Randy Bucek, Chris Bucek, Chuck Bucek, David Bucek Jr., Glenn Shaw and Eugene Grudziecki.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 91, Crosby, in behalf of our entire membership, express our condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother THEO SONKA, who passed away Thursday, April 18, 1986, at his home in Crosby at the age of 81.

Brother Sonka was born November 9, 1904, to Mary and Emil Sonka in the Shiner - Gonzales area. In 1918 the family moved from Gonzales to Crosby. Brother Sonka in his early years worked for Harris County and later went to work for Humble Oil & Refining Company (Exxon) of Baytown, Texas, where he worked for 23 years until retirement.

He was a member of the Crosby Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Sevcik Sonka of Crosby; one daughter, Doris Kohut of Houston; two sons, Larry Sonka of Bayton and Allen E. Sonka of Crosby; two sisters, Selma Vrana of Baytown and Emma Melcer of Sheldon, Texas; also 7 grandsons; 2 great - granddaughters, and many friends.

Brother Sonka was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Frances Wolcik of Texas City and Ann Walkoviak of Cleveland, Texas.

Funeral services were conducted under the direction of Earthman Funeral Home of Baytown with burial at the White Cemetery near Highlands, Texas.

This is in memory of my beloved husband, Adam F. Kutter, who passed away 6 months ago at our home in Irving at the age of 69.

Services were held in San Angelo with Rev. Dan Marek officiating.

Burial was in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Adam was born January 15, 1916 in Sharp. We married December 19, 1937 in Granger.

He was a driver for East Texas Motor Freight and an Army veteran of World War II. Being a member of SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor, he also was a member of Wall Brethren Church.

Adam was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hubert Kutter.

He is survived by his wife, several nieces, nephews, grand - nieces and grand - nephews.

AMELIA ONDRASEK, who passed away Tuesday, May 20, 1986 in Rosebud Hospital at the age of 91.

Sister Ondrasek was born in Granger to John and Theresa Dukantik Shimek. She married Charles Ondrasek in 1913. They farmed in the Red Ranger area.

She was a member of the Seaton Brethren Church.

Services were held for Mrs. Ondrasek Thursday, May 22nd at 10 a.m. at the Sheffield Funeral Home Chapel in Rogers with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962 and one son, Arnold Ondrasek.

Couple Marks Fortieth Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Charlie E. Tyler of Holland celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary Saturday, May 24th.

The couple's daughter and son - in law, Diana and Jimmy Stroud and their grandchildren, Shannon and Derek Stroud of Holland honored the couple with a reception and dinner at the SPJST Hall in Holland.

Charlie Tyler and the former Edna Wendler of Holland were married May 19, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in

Belton by Rev. J.B. Rose.

Mr. and Mrs. Tyler have been members of Lodge 80 since 1948 and are a great asset to the lodge, always ready to help.

Gena Kay Odstrcil of Austin became the bride of Dwayne Ray Schiller of Austin in a double - ring ceremony Saturday, June 7, at Temple Brethren Church, Temple, Texas.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gene Odstrcil of Temple. The bridegroom is the son of Raymond E. Schiller of Temple.

The Rev. Mark Labaj officiated.

Music was by Pamela Bland of Temple, pianist and organist, and Marci Maspero of Stephenville and Andrea Maspero, soloists.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a satin gown with a Seville lace bodice accented with sequins and pearls, with short, puffed sleeves and a cathedral train trimmed with scalloped Venise lace.

Maid of honor was Kerry Odstrcil, sister of the bride, of Temple.

Bridesmaids were Noelle Linzy of Dallas, Kim Stewart of Austin, Jennifer Maness of Waco and Ronda Schiller, sister of the bridegroom, of Temple.

Best man was Mark Blanchat of Boulder, Colorado. Groomsmen were Jeff Howell and Matt Tullis, both of Austin, Scott Rodgers of College Station; and Adam Guillen of Temple.

Flower girl was Amber Bartek. Ring bearer was Russell Belson.

After a wedding trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the couple will live in Austin.

The bride, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of business administration degree, is an auditor with Lanier, Locke and Ritter.

The bridegroom attends UT - Austin and is a law clerk with the Texas Trial Lawyers Association.

He has served his county as an election precinct judge for 15 years.

He also served his Country for 44 months overseas during World War II, and continues to belong to the American Legion Post 451 and the VFW Post No. 4458.

In addition to his many activities, he belongs to the SPJST Lodge 17 for 51 years, RVOS, and serves on various committees in service to these organizations.

Brother Dusek has received a plaque for 30 years of service to the Burleson County Fair, and he received the FFA's Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree for service to the Caldwell FFA Chapter.

It is easy to see that Brother Theodore Dusek has spent much of his life in service to Burleson County.

Brother Dusek is the son of Mrs. Rosie Dusek and the late Frank Dusek; his wife, Joyce (Nowak) Dusek and sons, Theodore Jr. and Dick, are all proud of their loved one's accomplishments.
