Lodge 6, Cottonwood May Meeting Dear Readers: Our meeting was held May 4th.

Kevin Dobecka and Keith Hykel recited the pledge.

Sister Shirley Dobecka reported fifteen members present for our meeting.

All reports were given and approved.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth will be taking cakes to the rest home May 7th. She attended the Leaders' Training in Dallas. They donated paper to St. Mary's School.

They donated combs, makeup, and toothbrushes to Mexia State School.

The District III will have a pastry booth at Fraternal Fest June 8th. They made corsages for the rest home. New youth rules will be available in June.

The youth elected their officers. The youth club members are selling knives and Stanley products. Sister Schuetz also has Fraternal Fest tickets for $5 each if anyone is interested.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz sent get well cards to Matt Beseda, Sisters Stella Perez and Debbie Ivy. Brother George Straten gave the Board of Trustees' report. He reported they discussed the picnic. Those in charge will be: Prize Tickets -- Bobby & Peggy Dobecka Food -- Martha Monthei, Rose Uptmor, Ruth Krizan, Johnnie Krizan Auction -- Ray & Stella Perez, Edward & Barbara Hykel Bar -- Robert Dobecka & George Straten Advertisement -- Robert Dobecka Meal Tickets -- Aubrey Uptmor They will have a work day May 10th. Brother Robert Dobecka is in charge of taking the trash away. They sold cans and bought items for the kitchen. Brother Straten thanked Brother Cyril! Svrcek for cutting the grass. The next board meeting will be May 30th at 8 p.r1„ President Krizan read the door prize winners, namely: Barbara Hykel -- $2 door prize Jeanette Beseda, John King, Jr. and Betty Marek names were drawn for the progressive door prizes. Since they were not present, we will have two $10 prizes and a $3 door prize at our next meeting.

17, New Tabor Remodeling

Lodge

Dear Members: New Tabor Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting May 4th with all officers present, except Vice President Sheila Hildebrand. Ben Trcalek, Jr. was appointed to stand in for her.

The minutes were accepted as read.

A very nice letter was read from Olga Kubin Lockridge, who, you may remember, was to receive a 50 - year pin but was unable to attend our reception for them.

Gladys Hejl was also absent, Lola Vavra gave her report.

The youth club's books were audited and found in good standing. The Auditing Committee will check the rest of the books at the next meeting.

A tentative date for the Fall Festival was set as either October 11th or 18th.

Since the meeting we've found out that October 18th is the date for the State Domino Tournament so it looks like a firm date for October 11th but, of course, it will have to be confirmed at the next meeting, also the committees will be appointed at that time.

It was noted that new policies are taking longer to process these days.

We've started some renovating which consists of some electrical work, air - conditioning duct work, some double doors and a lowered ceiling.

Dear Readers: Our May meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers John Paul Chervenka and Kenneth Jeske.

Carol Landers was visiting our meeting and reported on the Prairie Ship Liberty. Flag Hall will be participating in this Memorial Day weekend here in Temple.

Carol Chervenka read the minutes of the last meeting, several thank you and sympathy cards were also read.

Good reports were given by various committee chairmen.

Louise Zavodny and Bernise Sebek thanked the lodge for the 50 - year pin reception.

The Board report was read and several items were discussed.

Congratulations to Terry and Penny Coots on the arrival of their baby girl Ashley Lynn.

President Macek thanked everyone who worked with the 50 - year pin reception and the chili supper the lodge had.

Birthday celebrants this month are Louise Zavodny, Bernise Sebek, Carol Chervenka, Wilbert Mikeska, Kim Schneider, Patricia Schneider and Pat Giestman. Happy Birthday to you all and hope you have many more!

Our next meeting will be June 11th at 7:30 p.m. See you then.

28, East Bernard Meeting

Dear Members: It is time again for the monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas.

Sunday, June 1st is the date, -2 p.m. is the time and, as always, the lodge hall is the place. The agenda and order of business will be standard. Father's Day will be remembered with a special door prize for fathers.

The "Exaltant Order of Lunch Munchers" will meet at the buffet table after the lodge business meeting.

The May 4th monthly meeting started on time with a "baker's dozen" being present. All reports were accepted as given. It was announced

by Sister Haverda that the Legion Hall has been reserved for Sunday, September 28th for the District VI fall meeting. Two motions were made and passed. One of the motions to accept a new member had several abstentions showing when the count was made. It was learned from these members that they were NOT clear as to who the new member was.

The regular door prize was won by Brother Frank Brdecka. The special door prize, in remembrance of Mother's Day, was won by Sister Frances Haverda.

There were many special prizes donated by Sisters Haverda, Janik, Srubar, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval. There were too many to name all of the respective winners but not one mother went away without at least getting one (1) prize. Sister Kortis gave a special gift to Sister Luquette.

Sisters Janik, Haverda, Kortis, Srubar, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval donated enough food to make the luncheon a success. There was food enough to feed both light and heavy munchers with some left over to take home.

Brother Lupik again led the charge on the cleanup crew.

Some notes on some of our sick members. One of the regulars, Sister Annie Foytik, was in a Houston hospital at meeting time. A former delegate and regular, Sister Lydia Sperlik, now is in a rest home in Hillje.

She has not attended any meetings in recent years because of very poor health. Brother Ladik Sabrsula is now a resident of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville.

Attention Lodge 74, Lovelady Members!

Lovelady Members!

Dear Members and Guests: I want to correct the mistake and misrepresentation made to you on the premium payment and your insurance even though the payments are collected by the Supreme Lodge; it is no different from what the local lodge collected. It is my error by not finding out for sure before I wrote the report.

I know on Universal Life, the amount on that class is $25 per month in order so you could pay by the month; otherwise if the premium per month is below $25, then the member on that class pays every 3 months.

I have received about 25 or more special premium offers and all were billed for 3 months, except the ones who pay by the year. That is where I got confused; I thought there was a change. It just was my mistake by not first contacting the Supreme Lodge.

I know we all make mistakes, but if I make one, I always want to correct it if it's possible.

I appreciate all of you who have purchased SPJST life insurance. Yes, I have promised all members who have purchased insurance could be members of the lodge, which I still stand by that promise. Therefore, no dues for the youngsters (not until they reach age 16); at age 12 to age 16, on Saturday night dances, you get membership cards to show you have purchased insurance because all from age 12 and up pay admission; by having insurance with SPJST, you get discount rates without paying dues.

Oh, yes, a correction on the social membership -- If you are unable to purchase insurance due to health, we don't sell $10 dues anymore. You buy annuity which does not have any bearing on your age or health; the least you can purchase on annuity is $25 per month. I hope this will correct my error.

Dear Members and Friends: As human beings most of us journey through life in gladness and happiness although, also, as we journey through this life, agony and sadness besiege us.

Our family went through this sadness, just recently May 1st my sister's husband, Albert Steglich, passed away after a lingering illness and, before the flowers on his grave wilted away, a tragic death took the life of my brother Johnnie. It was a great shock to his wife, Bealah, his brothers and sisters, relatives and friends. For the past several months he suffered from a malady for which the medical profession had. No cure! Johnnie was a likeable person. He was a sales representative of SPJST Lodge No. 80 for 21 years. So, as we journey through this life, we never know what fate has in store for us.

We held our regular monthly meeting Sunday, May 4th at 2 p.m.

With President D.I. Bohac presiding with all officers present. The president asked all members to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and after the pledge we were asked to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members.

We accepted two new members, at this meeting, for our lodge, namely, Otto Wiederhold and Estelle Goodnight. Mary Jo Ramsey took out additional insurance. Welcome to our midst!

It was also agreed to donate $25 to the Rogers Little League from our lodge.

We now have a nice display room as you enter the lodge hall for our trophies, pictures, etc. Most of the material was donated by Joe Barabas and I am very grateful to Glen Latham and Daniel Grossman for erecting it; it is something we really needed and it's real nice.

Tina Benner represented Lodge 80 as duchess, at the Mayfest at Lodge 29 Sunday, May 4th.

Well, the Mistrinanka Orchestra from Czechoslovakia performed to a full house (so to speak) at our hall Sunday, April 27th. They are a group of talented musicians, believe me!

The beautiful rains finally came and I don't think they were ever - more welcome, than they were this time; they were greatly needed and, since they started, we have five inches; very nice!

Our meeting adjourned at 3 p.m. to meet again June 1st at 2 p.m.

Secretary Mary Werner read thank you cards from the Fort Bend County Deputy Reserve Association and

Richmond State School, also the certificate from the committee of the Statue of Liberty for our donation towards the restoration.

We are sorry to hear that Lydia Sabrsula and Joe Silhany have been in the hospital; our best wishes and a speedy recovery are wished to both of you.

Vlasta Nowotny reported that her Brother John Valka is now in the nursing home in Wharton.

Our next meeting will be June 10th at 7 p.m.

The big event of the summer season is just about here. "Homecoming With A Splash" is Sunday, June 1st.

An entire day of activities has been planned for the members of Lodge 88 and their guests. A barbecue dinner will be served free of charge to the members from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Meal tickets for guests and for members arriving after 3 p.m. will be sold for $4.50 for a large plate and $3 for the mini - plate. The swimming pool will open at 1 p.m. with members swimming free and the guests paying $3 for the day. Guests must be accompanied by a member; this will be the rule for the entire summer. "The Bobby Jones Band" will play outside on the gazebo from noon until 4 p.m. and in the ballroom for the free dance at 5 p.m.

Bingo will be played at 2 p.m. As usual, the Birthday Sisters will have their delicious pastry for sale. Birthday Club President Rita Alexander and her hard - working Birthday Club Sisters will appreciate any pastry donations.

Just bring your pastry to their booth and they will say thank you for your generosity. Various committees have projects scheduled for the day so there will be plenty to keep you busy between visits with your fellow lodge members. President Jerry Ermis, his officers and committees will be on hand to say "Welcome" or "Vitame vas."

The pool will start the regular summer schedule Monday, June The hours for swimming are from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. every day and the price is certainly right. Don't forget, Lodge 88 members will swim free this summer. Show your membership card, be checked in with a current enjoy membership roster, and then yourself in the big beautiful pool. The manager and life guards will be on duty and all pool rules will be enforced. The summer "free swim" policy should create some good will and high records for all the summer activities. The $1 reduction on member dance tickets starting in June is also a way of benefiting our lodge members.

Get your membership card and get ready for a summer of good times here at Lodge 88.

Little Che Allison Knight was born to Mike and Shirley Knight April 20th.

Sisters Nicki and Melissa Durossette were happy to welcome her home. Che makes Pal and John Hilsher of Fayetteville grandparents again and Pearl Hanka a happy great - aunt.

Tom and Clara Jecmenek and family took a car and van trip around the Canyon Lake area over Mother's Day weekend. Beside Tom and Clara, those going on the family trip were daughters Patsy and Kathleen, granddaughters Rene, Donna, Linda and Beverly, and three great granddaughters. Dr. Anderson, Donna's husband, and three other grandchildren decided to make a surprise Mother's Day meal for the five mothers upon their return Sunday Eve. The big surprise was on them!

The travelers all went directly to their homes and were so tired they went to bed early instead of going on to the Anderson's home where the meal was ready and waiting. The best laid plans...

Robin and Vincent Roznovsky with Robin's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroeder of Victoria, came home safe and sound from their trip to Frankfort, Germany. Vincent's Mother Elsie reported that they had an exciting trip and she was glad to have them back home.

Sister Agnes Pederson was surprised at her first - ever surprise birthday party Saturday, May 3rd. Sons Raymond and Lin with their wives Gracie and Denise made a barbecue dinner at Lin's home in Alief for Odell and Agnes. Agnes is a sales representative and Lin was a very active youth club member for many years. Lin is currently known as

"Captain Eddie" and does traffic reports on Radio Station KIKK - FM here in Houston.

Ruth Duncan has been discharged from Livingston Hospital and is at her home there after suffering a heart attack. Sister Minnie Bravenec is also at home after suffering a leg burn in a kitchen accident. Marian Kadlecek is still in the hospital. Mary Tilich is "up and at 'em" after having eye surgery.

Brother Harry Finn had a double by pass and valve - repair surgery Thursday, May 15th and is recuperating on schedule. We wish all our ill friends a speedy recovery. Send them a cheery card or call them. They will be glad to hear from you.

Saturday, May 17th Betty and Darryl Fogarty celebrated their silver wedding anniversary at a party given by their children Tammy, Troy and Carl Fogarty. It was to be a backyard barbecue for family and friends at the home of Betty's mother, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knapick. You know what happened around 4 p.m. that Saturday. High winds, rains, thunder and lightning and tornado warnings didn't cancel the party though, just dampened it some. It was moved inside. You will remember Betty worked in the lodge office several years ago for Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt and is a Lodge 88 member.

Lodge 139, Danbury May Meeting The May 14th meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 was called to order by President Vincent Hechler.

After reports were given by the officers, Secretary Tommie Lostak read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar commending the lodge for its fraternalism and for its contributions to the Skrabanek Park Fund, the Danbury Little League, and for its initiation of a scholarship which the lodge will give to a Danbury High School graduating lodge member.

Brother Lostak also announced there would be a tarok tournament to be held at Lodge 29 in Taylor, July 26th.

After business was concluded the meeting was turned over to District V Director Jerry Prochazka who gave a report on the Supreme Lodge meeting.

He congratulated Sister Helen Filipp and Brother Lostak for being the top two insurance salespersons in the state.

He explained the different types of insurance available, loan rates and refinancing, and the eligibility requirements for obtaining scholarships from SPJST. Director Prochazka also discussed the upcoming tarok, domino, and 42 tournaments. He then opened the floor for a lively questions and answers period.

Before adjourning for the night, a social was held with food being provided by the ladies of the lodge.

I would like to report to our members that in the months of April and May, your lodge has been running along smoothly. We had our Sunday social May 4th and we had a nice crowd turn out for dinner and dancing. The "Wilderness" band played for dancing and all enjoyed the music. We also had a group of square dancers who put on an enjoyable show for us before the dancing started.

For all of you who have a dance schedule please be advised that May 31st, the band originally scheduled will not be playing. In their place will be "The South Texas Bohemain Cowboys." Also, August 30th the "Sagebrush" band will be replaced by "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"band.

In about two more weeks school will be out and vacationtime will be with us, so why not plan on making our "Grand Ballroom" the first stop on your vacation. We do have a dance every Saturday night and you surely will be welcome. For an extra bonus we are about 11/2 miles from the famous "Gilley's" which you might want to visit. Also, if you are from out - of - town we are about 12 miles from San Jacinto Park and the Battleship "Texas" - a must on any trip. As you might know, they have just finished rejuvenating the San Jacinto Monument and it's reflection pool.

Also, put on your trip, plans to go on down Hwy. 45 for about 50 miles and see Galveston and the Gulf of Mexico and the Sea Wolf Park and Sea Mama. You might want to take in the outdoor show "Texas" which shows during the summer at the State Park on the island. By the way, if you are still in the area by the weekend, a great way to top your vacation week- would be to come by and enjoy the Saturday night dance with us.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: The May meeting was called to order

by President Mary Tesar with 27 members and guest, Rose Romeo, present. Our new member made welcome was Dolly McGill.

Several of our members were missed at our meeting; Mollie Walker fell and broke her arm, Sarah Wade is in the hospital, Louise Oujesky is at home with husband, Clem, who is home from the hospital, Mary and Benny Pavey resting after a round trip to St. Louis to see Mary's brother who has been in the hospital, Rosemary Gribble was packing for a trip to Oklahoma, Gertrude and Homer Johnston were having car trouble and Merle and Frank Kovar, no doubt, still celebrating after Merle's retirement following many years employment with Montgomery Ward.

The birthday members were Andy Sustale, Frances Tirk, Ann Johnson, Mary Dunlap, Frank Graver, Mollie Sladovnik and Virgil Dockery.

Frank Tesar was the lucky winner of the door prize measuring cups donated by Ima Lou La Plant. Lydia Alholm will donate the door prize for the June meeting.

The Southern District Sokol Slet will be in Ft. Worth June 13th, 14th and 15th. The club purchased an ad for the Souvenir Program Book.

We express get - well wishes to Nita Houzvicka and Joe Manda of Dallas who have been in the hospital and to Arnold Pospichal who is now recuperating at home after a stay in the hospital.

Our condolences to Millie Mlenar on the loss of her mother. It was good seeing Andy and Millie at the Ennis Polka Festival, especially, after Andy had minor surgery.

The Polka Festival was also an eventful weekend for Rose Steinman, Jeanie Mason and Mary Renfro. The three sisters spent two days of togetherness while visiting with friends at the four different halls.

We extend our congratulations to Corina Tesar and Robert Cranfill who were wed May 24th. Parents of the bride are Joyce and Frankie J. Tesar.

Grandparents are Mary and Frank Tesar. It is with regret that Roy and I were unable to attend the wedding celebration due to a prior commitment of visiting our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy, and three grandsons in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. On our return home, we attended the 20th anniversary of the Czech - American Center in, their present location in St. Louis. We attended the dedication of the center when we both attended Sokol gym classes 20 years ago. Many of our friends we once knew were missing after 20 years.

Bessie and Phil Reames, after 25 years of married bliss, had a most enjoyable surprise celebration with friends at the Mother's Day dance at the Dallas Czech Club, May 10th. We did indeed miss Charlie and Julie Adamcik at the gathering.

Our congratulations to all the 1986 graduates, especially my niece, Toni Tirk, who will graduate from Grapevine High School. Toni has received a scholarship and will attend Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina, Kansas in the fall.

With much anxiety the Texas teachers waited for test results. After a year of frustrations, I hope they have a restful summer.

Circle Of Czech Women Report

On a rainy Thursday, May 1st, our Circle met with guests Phil Reames, Charlie Kocian, John .Trojacek, Bob Zvolanek, Alvin Elsik, Roy Alholm, Julius Podhrasky, Helen Honza's granddaughter, Lauren Holub.

President Zvolanek opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and a moment of silence for Betsy McDaniel (Aggie Mach's sister) and George Skotak, Jr., son of Zdenka Skotak. As of this writing, I am sorry to report the death of another dear sister, Millie Bartek. She passed away at the Doctor's Nursing Home after only a brief stay there. I was hoping my aunt from California, who is now a resident there, would get to meet Millie.

President Zvolanek recognized the following sisters who have not been at meetings lately: Lydia Alholm, Josephine Kankrlik and Lydia Dirkx.

Greetings were sent to our Circle members from Mary Kubacak, Liddie Pavelka, Hattie Ground, Mildred Chervenka, Helen Vrla, Jr., Martha Vrla, Rose Parma, Ella Bartos, Lillian Graeser, Agnes Finch and Rose Noska.

Dorothy Reznik made a donation in memory of George Skotak, Jr., Ann Zvolanek, Alice Roberts, and Mary Sebestik also made a donation in memory of George Skotak, Jr. Sister Bessie Kalich donated in memory of Jr. and also in George Skotak, memory of Mary Kubacak's sister.

Bessie Reames reported on the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meeting.

Lydia Alholm announced the American Southern District Slet will be held June 13th, 14th and 15th. She asked if anyone wished to buy an ad in their Souvenir Book.

Mary Sebestik asked if the Circle members might like to go visit Southfork Ranch. She quoted the fee for bus tour and the dinner prices. We will discuss this tour later and possibly set a date some time in the fall.

President Zvolanek asked, once again, if anyone wished to buy an ad in the Sesquicentennial Souvenir Book.

Our Circle's books were audited by Alvin Elsik and Bob Zvolanek.

This month's door prizes were donated by Bessie Kalich and two by Frances Jurcik. Thanks to both of you!

Bertha Podhrasky brought bagged lettuce fresh from her garden and the monies from the sale of the lettuce went to our Circle. It was very much appreciated and the lettuce was well worth the small charge.

News of our Circle members and their families: Sister Adelle Vlk and her husband, Joe, enjoyed two weeks in beautiful Hawaii celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Adelle said they visited five islands.

Congratulations to both of you!

Congratulations are also in store for Bessie Reames and husband, Phil, who have just recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They were surprised by several of their friends at the Catholic Czech Club with a nice party.

Graduation congratulations to Leonard and Susan Gallia, son and daughter - in - law of Sister Mildred Chervenka, who graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio, Texas. Each received a Doctor's degree in Medicine.

My son, David Reznik, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Texas Tech University. Some of the societies and awards while he was at Tech are American Society of Landscape Architects, Student Chapter and National Affiliate, American Institute of Architects, Student Affiliate, Student Association Presidential Cabinet, Executive Director of State Affairs, Delta Upsilon Social Fraternity, Charter Member, Housing Chairman, Assistant Pledge Trainer, Who's Who In American College Students Nominee (1984), and the Dean's Honor List. David is now employed as a City Planner for the City of Plano, Texas.

To all the many young people still in schools, please consider taking the advice given to the Kid on the Bench: "Champions once sat where you're sitting, kid. The Football Hall of Fame (and every other Hall of Fame) is filled with names of people who sat, week after - week, without getting a spot of

mud on their well - laundered uniforms. Generals, senators, surgeons, prize - winning novelists, professors, business executives started on the end of a bench, too. Don't sit and study your shoe tops. Keep your eye on the game. Watch for defensive lapses. Look for offensive opportunities. If you don't think you're in a great spot, wait until you see how many would like to take it away from you at next spring practice.

What you do from the bench this season could put you on the field next season, as a player, or back in the grandstand as a spectator."

Of CESAT Annual Meeting

All of the members of the Czech Ex Students Association of Texas are asked to attend the general membership meeting to be held Saturday, June 7, 1986, starting at 1 p.m. in the Meeting Room in the SPJST Supreme Lodge Building in Temple, Texas. The building is located at 520 North Main Street.

Several important topics will be discussed and decisions made. The election of officers will also be held.

A University Chair For Czech Studies For a number of years Texans of Czech Ancestry have been discussing the need for establishing a university endowment to preserve our ancestral language and culture for the present and future generations.

March 1, 1986, a group of between 30 to 40 Czech - Texans met in Temple to discuss the possibility of moving forward with a fund drive to raise at least $500,000 for an endowment to create a permanent University Chair for Czech Studies that would guarantee the teaching of the Czech language and other related activities at either Texas A&M University or the University of Texas. The concensus of the participants was to proceed with this project. The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, Inc., a non profit foundation, met afterward and began laying plans for the conduct of the fund drive. The campaign has started. (See enclosed coupon.)

CESAT has endorsed the project and joins the Czech Educational Foundation in urging its membership to join the drive with generous contributions. Our Association's primary goals are to promote our Czech language and culture through education. We should be in the forefront in this effort by making individual donations or pledges that can be paid over 2 to 3 years. CESAT is now a non - profit foundation.

Contributions can be made to the Association which are tax deductable.

What better way is there to honor and preserve the memory of our Czech immigrant forebears who suffered so much that we might enjoy the blessings of liberty and prosperity than to have each of us donate a portion of the total amount needed? The money you donate will remain forever to "work" as a "living" legacy in an endowment earning interest to be used year after year so that our children, grandchildren and their descendants can continue to study their ancestral language and culture. Since we Czechs played an important part in the development of this State, it is most appropriate to start this effort as we also celebrate the State's Sesquicentennial.

A University Chair Fund account has been established by CESAT and the funds will be joined with the funds collected by the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas to form the endowment. Thus far approximately 20 percent of the total amount has been donated or pledged.

Each donor's name and amount given will be properly recorded and recognized. To date, the CESAT members who have made donations are: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kovar, Bishop John L. Morkovsky, Kevin Hannan, and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Marek.

The Council of Higher Education has approved a donation of $10,000 from the funds it administers to be paid in five annual increments of $2,000 each. Our goal should be to have the membership individually and collectively donate at least an equal or greater amount.

I feel it would also be appropriate to recognize Professor J.J. Skrivanek who is the President of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) who, with his wife, has pledged $25,000 to the CEFT CHAIR FUND. The Professor has also been a member of CESAT for a number of years and has taken the initiative in this project by making CEFT the lead organization.

Letter To The Editor Dear Mr. Sefcik: Mr. W.J. Malina's timely article "Thoughts on the Czech Language" in the May 7th issue of Vestnik' was so informative and well done that I feel that I should express my appreciation to him for writing it and to you for publishing it.

My effort to re - learn the Czech language seems to coincide with the movement in Texas.

Mr. Malina indicated that Czech classes are being taught in several community colleges and high schools and in some SPJST lodges and that a statewide effort is being made to establish a "Czech Chair" at the University of Texas. I noted elsewhere that Texas A&M University is also being considered for the "Czech Chair." I would prefer the latter since I am a Texas Aggie of 1934 vintage! I have sent a contribution to CEFT Inc., University Fund, supporting the project.

I agree with Mr. Malina's statement that "It is surprising how fast Czech comes back to you when you start studying it." Czechs in Mississippi are few and far between and to study the language I have to rely on the weekly lessons published in Vestnik. I am indeed fortunate that I asked to be placed on the mailing list for Vestnik early this year although I have been an SPJST member for more than 50 years. Thank you for publishing the weekly lesson and Mr. John Holub's lesson as well.

I would also like to express appreciation to Sister Anezka Houdkova for her weekly column titled "Tak Vselicos." I hope that she would not be insulted if she knew that I read her column aloud to practice vocalizing my Czech! Her knowledgeable comments on current events makes translation easy for me even though some of the words are unfamiliar to me.

I note that, as of May 10th, Sister Houdkova has written the column for 26 years. She is to be congratulated

Acclaim For T. The Kolache Festival Wide

The Steering Committee of the Annual Kolache Festival has been on the road again, busy promoting Burleson County and the upcoming festival.

Post Oak Mall in College Station held a Living and Leisure Fair in April during Parent's Weekend at Texas A&M University. The Kolache Festival Committee had an outstanding booth in the mall for the three - day event.

Mall management estimated 60,000 people visited the mall during the Fair.

Miriam Feigenbaum of Manuel's Fashion Center generously donated the booth entry fee to help promote the Caldwell area. The Snook Bakery and Country Bakery and Slovacek Sausage provided delicious samples of kolache and sausage to promote the Snook area and participation in the festival.

Members of the Kolache Festival wore beautiful Czech costumes, displayed items typical of the ethnic craftsmen, and delighted thousands of visitors with live Czech music.

April 19 the traveling booth appeared again at the Snook Sesquicentennial Celebration. Again, Kolache Festival workers gave a sneak preview of the many activities planned for September 13 around the Burleson County Courthouse.

May 3 the group traveled to Rosenberg and the Czech Festival wearing the familiar red festival T. Shirt, passing out hundreds of brochures and answering questions about the magic of the Kolache Festival.

The group has been invited back to Post Oak Mall for the June 14 and 15 Brazos Valley Historical Festival.

Angelique Gammon, Editor of Insite Magazine said, "We must have the Kolache Festival booth return -- it was the most popular booth at the earlier show ." Insite will publish a special Sesquicentennial Commemorative edition in June to be distributed at the Brazos Valley Historical Festival. A feature page on "Discover the Magic of Caldwell" will appear in the special edition.

The Kolache Festival is featured in the 1986 - 87 edition, Annually in Texas, a complete guide to over 150 of the State's Best Annual Events, available at bookstores and newsstands throughout the state.

Thousands of Kolache Festival brochures are distributed through the eleven Texas Tourist Development Agency's locations. The Caldwell Chamber of Commerce may be contacted for additional information.

Entry forms for arts and crafts and food booth are now available.

The Kolache Festival is a celebration of the revitalization of the Czech heritage. The day - long festival will feature continuous entertainment, the "Cesky Kolache," Bake Shoppe, an outstanding Quilt Show, the Czech Mini - Museum, Antique Auto Show, the Kraitchar House Museum, the

From The State Youth Director LIT Retreat Enjoyed By All The first statewide LIT Retreat was held at Camp Val Verde May 17th and 18th. Youth from across the state participated in numerous workshops to sharpen their leadership skills.

Learning to lead was the emphasis of the weekend. The DYCs served as instructors for workshops on folk dancing, game and song leading and the SYD guided the LITs in learning to plan ceremonies and in developing a personal leadership style. The LITs

demonstrated their skill in leading Sunday morning.

All the youth did an excellent job.

We can be proud to have these youth serve as LITs this summer at camp. All in all, the weekend was a great success despite the severe storm which tried to dampen everyone's spirit.

Augustin Haidusek (1870) as a Through his career newspaperman and politician, Augustin Haidusek was likely the best - known and most influential of the Czech pioneers in Texas. Born in Moravia in 1845, he was brought by his parents to Texas when he was eleven. The immigrants landed at Galveston in October 1856, and proceeded to an oak grove on the east bank of the Navidad River in Fayette County.

Four years after their arrival in Texas, the Haiduseks were visited by a family friend newly - arrived from Moravia. "My dear Valento," the friend told Augustin's father, "you had a better pig - sty at home. The father replied, "I had rather live in this but as an American citizen than to live in a palace and be under the Austro Hungarian oppression.

In 1863, Haidusek enlisted in the Confederate army and was stationed at

Fort Velasco. After his discharge from service in 1865, he spent most of his time farming and teaching school until 1869, when he began the study of law.

The next year he became the first Texan of Czech origin licensed to practice law in the state. In 1875, he was elected mayor of La Grange. In the 1880s he served in the Texas Legislature and as a judge of Fayette County.

Augustin Haidusek encouraged assimilation into the Texas culture. and insisted that only English be spoken in the Czech classrooms. He did much to end the distrust of other groups toward the Czechs and helped his countrymen secure new opportunities in Texas society and politics.

From The Youth Counselors District VI Youth To Take Tour Dear SPJST Members of District VI: The District VI Camp will be held June 3rd to 6th at Camp Lone Star at La Grange. The camp will start at 10:30 a.m. June 3rd and conclude at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 6th.

The Educational Tour will be held June 25th. The group will visit the Blue Bell Creamy in Brenham, the SPJST Museum in Temple, and Inner Space Caverns. Please let me know if you

Attention District VI Campers!

Dear SPJST Members: The District VI SPJST Camp will be held June 3rd to 6th at Camp Lone Star near La Grange. The camp will start at 10:30 a.m. June 3rd and conclude at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 6th.

You need to bring the following items: A bed roll A pillow A light blanket or bedspread Flashlight Towels/Washcloth Swimming suit Beach towel Sport clothes (shorts, tops or blouses) Blue jeans or long pants Shoes for hiking belongings Personal suntan (toothpaste/brush, soap, lotion, etc.)

It would be helpful if you would label your clothes with your name.

You will need to bring a sack lunch for Tuesday's dinner. Drinks will be furnished. There will be snacks of chips, cookies, and Kool - Aid served each morning, afternoon, and after the evening party. You may purchase your own soft drinks from the machine.

You will be swimming as a group at certain times. A schedule will be provided for you to follow. Part of the schedule will include canoeing, archery, biking and a night party. The night programs will be: Tuesday -- Sport's Party Wednesday -- New Year's Party Thursday -- Go Texas Night You should bring some items from home for our costume to wear to the party.

The group will meet at Wal - Mart in El Campo at 8 a.m. and at Taiton at 8:15 a.m. Others may meet us at camp at 10:30 a.m. Let your youth leader know your plans.

This should be a week of fun. Please come to camp with a smile and a pleasing attitude.

AT HEB CAMP June 26, 27, 28 & 29, 1986 Final plans are made for our District VII outing. We are going to HEB Camp Win dsong at Leakey. This camp has a capacity for 40 people. I ne invitation gives priority to active youth club members, then on a first - come -

basis. Anyone may go. Bring your children. This camp wi l l be different from our regular youth camp. We are asking everyone to bring food for people you are bringing. You will also be responsible for the, care and behavior of those you bring to camp.

We will have a lifeguard and a nurse.

Everyone will have to take turns helping with the cooking and cleaning.

All it will cost is the food you bring.

Below is a menu so we will be able to put our food together to prepare the meals.

We are to arrive at Camp Windsong (at HEB Camp) after 3 p.m. Thursday, we will stay Friday - Saturday and leave for home Sunday after lunch.

Send in your application now. Time is short. I will let you know as soon as the 40 places are filled.

If you bring a youth who is not your own child, a regular camp application must be signed by the child's parent.

Menu: Breakfast for 3 Meals -Coffee, milk, dry cereal, orange juice, bread, bacon and eggs.

Lunches: Three Meals -- Cold cuts, hot dogs, hamburgers and buns.

Evening Meals: Three Meals -Ground meat for 2 meals, chicken to fry for one meal.

Bring: Cups, bread, 2 carrots each, 2 potatoes, 1 onion, lettuce, tomatoes, salad dressing, chips, dips and cookies.

Bring your favorite, beverage -- NO ALCOHOL, PLEASE! The above will take care of the basic meals. You may bring anything you want to eat, but I ask that you be sure and bring enough of the above to pitch in the pot - to cook together.

We need 40 people to fill this camp.

9, Snook YC Participates In Sesquicentennial Celebration

Dear Readers, Our May 7th meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Our old business was the Lions Club sausage/sauerkraut, which supper was a success. The bingo was just great.

Our Sesquicentennial Parade and Festival were outstanding. Thanks went to Clint Sebesta, Jr., Shayne and Bradley Vajdak, Donna and Cheryl Schoeneman for the cakes. Also thanks to those who worked in our booth.

Dear Readers, The Lodge No. 24 Youth Club held a monthly meeting May 14, 1986 beginning at 7:30 p.m. with two officers absent.

Vice President Kim Hubnik called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Bradley Marek and Tracey Chervenka.

The roll was then called by Secretary Kim Schneider. Present were 21

members, 1 visitor, Chad Bruggman, also 1 adult, Mrs. Jane Bruggman.

We welcomed 2 new members, Carrie and Alan Svajda. We hope to see them at all of our gatherings.

After the minutes were read, our secretary read a correspondence from Academy Lodge No. 177. They invited us to an "End of School" dance for May 30th from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Our first discussion was under new business. We have decided to go swimming at the Walker Pool for our June social. It will be June 22nd from 8 to 10 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring their own refreshments. The youth club will furnish all of the drinks. You may also bring a friend to this summer social.

June 7th we will elect our 1986 - 87 officers. Keep in mind this will be the Saturday before our June meeting.

This event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Our new officers will be installed at the next meeting by DYC Frankie Klinkovsky.

Our youth leader reminded us of YAD and camp. You may still order your camp T - Shirts. Everyone at our lodge is excited about this year's camp!

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 84, Dallas, Texas, in behalf of our officers and entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister MILLIE VASEK BARTEK, who passed away May 6, 1986 at the age of 76. Just recently she moved from her Dallas home to Doctor's Nursing Home in Dallas. She was born in Bell County, Texas.

Sister Bartek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84, RVOS No. 142, Dallas Brethren Church, and the Dallas Circle of Czech Women.

She excelled in seamstress work, baking kolache and gardening (b6th flowers and vegetables).

Services were held May 8th at the Ocker Brethren Church, east of Temple, Texas. The Rev. Henry Beseda officiated. Burial was in Ocker Brethren Cemetery.

Survivors include daughter, Linda Coker; son - in - law, Ronald Coker; three grandchildren, Christopher Coker, Daniel Coker and Stacy Coker, all of Dallas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were nephews, Jodi Vasek, Clifton Vasek, W. Johnny Vasek, Julius Motl, Bill Kristinek and Frank Kristinek.

He was a member of the Granger Brethren Church. He was owner and operator of the Mobil Service Station and Garage in Granger.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12 from the Condra Funeral Home in Granger with the Rev. Gordon Hejl officiating. Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Brother Henry and Sister Ann Banfi of Cicero, Illinois were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary February 1, 1986 at Sokol Tabor Hall in Berwyn, Illinois, with over 150 family members and friends.

Hosting the couple were their four daughters and families; Annette and Bill Schabowski and children Deanne and Christi; Henrietta and Jerry Milan and sons Rome and Talon of Fort Worth; Tina and Roy Cox and sons David and Danny Suges of Fort Worth; Raydeen and John Naughton and children Teryn, Ryan, Tysen and

Justin. They are all members of Lodge No. 154.

Preceding the party a Mass was held in Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Cicero Henry and Ann renewed their wedding vows before the Rev. Robert Bacchi.

Couple To Be Honored Mr. and Mrs. George Vitek, Sr., of 3309 McLean, Fort Worth, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at 6:30 p.m. June 13th at 7304 Yolanda, Fort Worth.

Hosting the occasion will be their children, Dr. George Vitek, Pat and Don Carson and niece, Vicki Hamlett; and grandchildren, Melissa Vitek, Sara Vitek and Shannon Carson.

Mr. Vitek, formerly of Granger, and the former Mary Elizabeth Kind, formerly of Taylor, were married in Granger June 13, 1936.

The 49 - year residents of Fort Worth are both retired. Mr. Vitek from Southwest Movers, Vitek's TV Business and Vitek's Hotel Restaurant, and Mrs. Vitek from Vitek Kolache Bakery.

They are members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, SPJST Lodge No. 154, and the AARP. Mr. Vitek will again compete in the Senior Division of the 10K Run in Austin, Texas this summer.

What is a case?

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: prvni pad— answers to the questions; KDO— who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO— what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex.: KDO tam chodi? Karel tam jde.

Here Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schaze se tam kora. Here schtize is in the nom. case.

GENITIVE Case— druh9 pad, has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of BELONGING. It answers the questions: echo? of what?, Ci? whose?

Ex.: Z teho je to vYrabene Ze leleza a z litiny. CI je to putik? Je to pudic meho otce. (Otce, here is in the gen. case).

DATIVE Case— treti pad, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone.

It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and CEMU?, to what?

Ex.: Komu pigeg? Pigu domu tatinkovi. (Tatinkovi here is in the dative case). Cemu poslouchig Posloucham vysilaci stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case).

4. ACCUSATIVE, or Direct object case— ttvrtY pad; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: KOHO? whom?, and CO what?

Ex.: Koho's tam vide? Vide jsem tam meho prftele. (prItele is in the acc. case).

Co tam vidfg? Vidim moji matku (matku is in the acc. case)

5. VOCATIVE Case— patY pad— is used for addressing or calling to a person or a thing.

6. LOCATIVE, or prepositionalgestY pad; is always used with prepositions. It cannot stand alone. It expresses position in time or space. It answers the questions KDE? where? 0 kom? About whom? 0 Um? About what?

Ex.: Kde je Marie? Sedi na schodech. (na schodech is in the loc. case) O kom mluvig ? Mluvim o tetiece. (0 tetie'ce is in the loc. case) 0 tem se jednalo? Jednalo se o rhznYch bodech. (o ruznYch bodech is in the loc. case).

7. INSTRUMENTAL— sedmk pad — expresses the means, way, manner, instrument, or casual condition. It answers the questions (s) kkm? with whom?, (s) eim? with what?
