The old saying that "Work done in a hurry is rarely done well" is true. In our hurry to finish the Vestnik so that your editor could attend the "Czech Educational Foundation of Texas" meeting in Caldwell at 1 p.m., we inserted the wrong copies of both. We regret this and apologize for any problems this may have caused. *** Wednesday, April 9th -- Your editor attended the Supreme Lodge quarterly meeting and listened to the rather serious and business - oriented deliberations of our Supreme Lodge officers and directors.

The meetings are held at a steady pace by Board Chairman Pokladnik and any and all questions and statements are listened to and considered. Our Supreme Lodge Board considers any information from members including your editor and harmony seems to prevail in a fraternal manner and, certainly, nothing is "steam - rollered."

This meeting was informative and yours truly will leave the details to Board Secretary Leonard Mikeska to report in his "Excerpts Of The Minutes," in due course. *** For a number of years Czech Texans have been discussing the need of establishing an endowment to provide a university "Chair" at a major Texas university for the purpose of guaranteeing the study of the Czech language and-the heritage of our Czech forefathers.

It is possible that some of our readers and/or members do not understand what establishing a "Chair" actually means or stands for.

A "Chair" is actually an endowment of a certain sum for continuous teaching of a language or subject which a college agrees to do in the future. The interest which the endowment earns is used for the perpetual use in teaching the language or subject (Czech in this case).

The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, Inc. has responded to a recent public meeting held in Temple, Texas, by proceeding with a fund drive for this purpose. It has the full support of the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas, another non - profit organization, and other interested individuals but needs the assistance of all Texans, or Americans, of Czech ancestry to make the dream a reality.

An amount of at least $500,000 is required to endow a chair. The State supported university, either the University of Texas or A&M University, would provide matching funds. Both the funds provided by us and the State would be endowed in perpetuity, that is, only the earnings

from the funds would be used to promote Czech studies to allow our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to learn of and perpetuate the beautiful, rich legacy left by our Czech ancestors. We envision the youth of 2036, the year in which Texas will celebrate its Bi centennial, reviewing our actions of today and expressing their appreciation for the effort we started during the celebration of our Sesquicentennial Year.

The money we donate to honor and enshrine forever the memory of the Czech pioneers of Texas will be but a small token of the debt we owe them.

They came to this great country with a dream to be free of political oppression, to better their economic lot and the quality of the lives of their descendants. They succeeded! And if they could only witness the prosperity of today!

Those of us in the middle - age stage of our lives can still warmly recall and identify with the Czech - Texan Culture prior to the 50s, prior to it being diminished by World War II and other social factors, and feel the great task of assuring future generations the opportunity of sharing and enjoying the rich experiences of the past is our responsibility. Our generation may be the last to have this strong desire to perpetuate our heritage by the creation of a strong and sound educational program.

Texans of Czech Ancestry must seek their proper place in Texas history and in the State's economic development.

The Czechs, or Bohemians as we were often called, were known to have been the best farmers in the State (and still are) and the backbone of the cotton industry. The endowment is one of the best means of taking our place alongside the other ethnic groups who have done the same.

Please join us in this effort by making a one - time donation and/or pledge. Remember, the money you give will remain endowed forever and will continue to benefit future students and scholars year after year from its earnings! Each donor's name will be inscribed in a book or several books that will accompany the endowment and can also be preserved in our museums and libraries. This will be our "living" legacy!

In this issue on page 11 is a donation and pledge form that you can use in making a contribution. The contributions are tax - deductable and all checks should be made payable to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas and send to: The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, Inc. University Fund Professor J.J. Skrivanek, Route 3, Box 60 - A Caldwell, Texas 77863 Again, please be generous in making this effort a success. It is a small price for the blessings we have received as a result of the persistence of our immigrant ancestors.

For additional information on questions you might have, feel free to contact any of the CEFT officers or directors in your area of the State, namely, Professor J.J. Skrivanek, Sid Pokladnik, Marvin Marek, Tim Kostom, Rudy Sefcik, Albert Blaha, Calvin Chervenka, Louis Hanus, Jan Vaculik, Victor Peter, etc. This group of officers and directors met Saturday, April 5th in Caldwell and laid further plans for the endowment fund. The next meeting will take place May 3rd in Ennis (time and place to be announced). CEFT Secretary Marvin Marek will have more in his minutes soon. ***

Beginning last spring, we decided to set the meeting each year for families. A social with bingo, keg beer and cold drinks will be held after the meeting. Please come and be a part of our District III Family. Bingo prizes are being furnished by District III Youth Club.

Throughout the day door prizes with a total value of $100 will be given away by the district! Be sure and be present for this as well.

The menu for Sunday is a real "Texas Treat" of barbecue and all the trimmings. Dinner for adults is $4; children, $2.50.

VII Spring Meeting District

The District VII meeting will be held Sunday, April 20, 1986. It will be hosted by Lodge 133 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, Texas. Lodge 133 will serve a dinner, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

We will need to appoint some committees before the meeting starts, namely, Audit and Nominating. Also each lodge is asked to bring your lodge banner. Host lodge to furnish American Flag and Sesquicentennital flag. The youth club will have booth set up to sell things.

VII Fall Meeting

13, Dime Box March Meeting

There were several letters of correspondence from the Nitsche Furgeson Insurance about our liquor liability insurance policy. The members decided to take out Workmen's Compensation Insurance on all workers at the hall. Our liability insurance only covered the other person in case of injury. It was decided that this wasn't fair to the people who give of their time to SPJST affairs.

Most of us were under the impression that our present insurance covered all accidents. This was not the case.

Brother Leshikar then talked to us about Fraternal Brotherhood. He reminded us that SPJST would soon be celebrating 100 years of service. To be in business so many years, we must be doing something right.

Brother Leshikar explained the new insurance available called Lone - Pay Life. This insurance policy can be paid in one lump - sum and is very good for someone who doesn't want to be bothered with payments. He also suggested the policy would be a good gift. If anyone is interested, please contact a sales representative.

Brother Leshikar also informed us of a Sesquicentennial Celebration to be held at Mayborn Convention Center in Temple Sunday, June 8th. This will be a family affair and would give all lodges a chance to come together for a day of fun - fun - fun. He as well reminded us of the annual Domino and Taroky Tournaments which would be coming up.

Brother Claud Flippin thanked Brother Leshikar for visiting with us and invited him back at any time.

There was some discussion about purchasing a few extra tables for the hall; however, it was decided to wait a while longer.

Sister Mary Kubena brought up the subject of having an SPJST Picnic this year. It was decided that, since we already have the Firemen's Picnic and the Catholic Bazaar, that another picnic would just be too much on everyone. We do have something at the hall almost every week and, since our workers are limited, it was decided we would not have a picnic.

We did decide to have a covered dish dinner April 6th for all the members and their families. There was also to be a free dance for the public from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m as a Sesquicentennial Day celebration.

The meeting then adjourned. Door prizes were won by Richard Spacek, Jamie Cottrell and Lisa Iselt.

Lodge 88, Houston News The Blue Room party is just around the corner. Tickets will be on sale until the end of next week. The doors will open at 4 p.m . Sunday, April 27th with cocktails being served all evening. The Henry Tannenberger Orchestra will play after the delicious barbecue dinner is served. Plenty of your favorite beverage, plenty of good food and four hours of dancing for the price of $10 is a good price for an evening of enjoyment. Tickets are on sale in the lodge office, and table reservations will be made with the purchase of six tickets or more.

The Bingo Committee of Lodge No. 88 has announced the prizes per game have been increased. All regular game prizes will be $50, with the novelty games increasing to $75. The 9th game coverall is $300 unless you cover your card in 52 numbers or less, then you'll get $500. The 18th coverall prize will be $150. Lodge No. 88 has Bingo License Number 3 - 000 - 621 - 2077 41001 and the committee complies with all the state rules. They play every Thursday evening starting with the early Bird Game at 7:15 p.m. Regular scheduled games start at 7:45 p.m. The Social Night Committee, as they prefer to be called, consists of 17 hard working lodge members with Chairman Willie Wehring leading the group. Some of these members were on this committee long before it should have been a committee.

Don't forget "The Talstars" play Friday, April 18th in the Chandelier Ballroom and "The Knights Of Dixie" appear Saturday, April 19th. The Blue Room will be open both nights as usual and the kitchen is open Saturday evening. Nat Gonzales in the Blue Room and Annie Vala in the kitchen will be happy to serve you.

Mrs. Ida Hanka recently celebrated her 91st birthday at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home where she lives. Her birthday is March 20th but her daughter - in - law Pearl Hanka,with Louise Kadlecek, Frances Olexa, and Rose Kostom, took her a big birthday cake on the 28th. Her friends at the Rest Home helped her celebrate.

If some friends or family members have been thinking of joining SPJST here at Lodge 88 this should be an incentive worth going for. Tell your friends about this and call your sales representative. The pool will officially open with our annual "Homecoming With A Splash" celebration Sunday, June 1st so get signed up and be ready teits by then. Remember -- all Lodge 88 members will swim free for the summer. The hours will probably be an afternoon and evening session as before. I'll get the exact information on that matter. If you don't have a membership card for some reason, you need to come by the lodge office and get yours. You will be checked into the pool with a current membership roster but your card will hasten the procedure. Dear Members and Friends: Our last regular meeting was held March 26, 1986. The order of business was conducted, as always, by President Jerry Dressler and assisted by 1st Vice President Dan Berry.

Correspondence was read. Minutes of our last meeting were read and all reports were given.

We voted on three new members and we welcome them to our lodge. They were Connie Sue Smith from Pasadena, John Anton Tanecka and Wilma Janie Tanecka from West Point, Texas.

At the District V meeting, at Lodge 142, two of our lodge officers were elected district officers. They were District V Secretary Sister Tennie Walla and District V 1st Vice President Dan Berry. Congratulations, we are all proud of you.

Lodge 172 and the Czech Heritage Society were represented at the opening ceremonies of the City of Pasadena Sesquicentennial Celebration at 2 p.m. March 2, 1986 at Pasadena Town Square.

Many favorable comments were made about the Czech costumes worn

by Victor and Lillia Mae Peter, John and Esther Mikeska and Dan and Margie Berry. Alsofmany enjoyed the display of things from Czechoslovakia which belonged to Lillia Mae Peter.

The display was in the Town Square for several weeks after the opening.

Attention all members, it is that time again! Your secretary needs all the reports of your fraternal service.

That means all the kind deeds you did for the benefit of others such as helping someone out in some way.

Please let me know about how many hours of this work you , did and how much money was involved. You may call me at 472 - 3196. Dear Members: Our meeting was held Monday, April 14th at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall.

Brother Lambert promised barbecue brisket for all of us who attended before the meeting. Also the more members attended, the bigger the door prize Was, besides finding out all things that happened at the lodge, plans for the future and there was socializing after the meeting. If you have never attended a meeting now is a good time to meet all the members and get to know them at our next meeting.

The Entertainment Committee has announced that there will be a dance at the lodge Saturday, April 26th from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with music by The Gamblers, a country and western band. Come out and bring all your friends; let's have a big crowd at this dance. More people who come, the more fun you can have.

For all of you who have little girls here is one definition of a little girl.

Little girls are the nicest things that happen to people. They are born with a little bit of angel - shine about them and though it wears thin sometimes, there is always enough left to lasso your heart - even when they are setting in the mud, crying temperamental tears, or parading up the street in mother's best clothes.

A little girl can be sweeter (and badder) oftener than anyone else in the world. She can jitter around, and stomp, and make funny noises and frazzle your nerves, yet just when you open your mouth, she stands there demure with that special look in her eyes'. A girl is innocence playing in the mud, beauty standing on its head, and motherhood dragging a doll by the foot.

God borrows from many creatures to make a little girl. He uses the song of a bird, the squeal of a pig, the stubborness of a mule, the antics of a monkey, the spryness of a grasshopper, the curiosity of a cat, the slyness of a fox, the softness of a kitten. And to top it off, He adds the mysterious mind of a woman.

A little girl likes new shoes, party dresses, small animals, dolls, make believe, ice cream, make - up, going visiting, tea parties, and one boy. She doesn't care so much for visitors, boys in general, large dogs, hand - me downs, straight chairs, vegetables, snow suits, or staying in the front yard. She is loudest when you are thinking, prettiest when she has provoked you, busiest at bedtime, most quiet when you want to show her off, and most flirtatious when she absolutely must not get the best of you, again. She can muss up your home, your hair and your dignity spend your money, your time, and your temper - then just when your patience is ready to crack, her sunshine peeks through and you've lost, again.

Yes, she is a nerve - racking nuisance, just a noisy bundle of mischief. But when your dreams tumble down and the world is a mess; when it seems you are pretty much of a fool after all, she can make you a king

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Another softball season is about upon us, again this year our 33rd consecutive season to field a team in the Dallas City Commercial Fast Pitch League. Also, our annual fund raising softball team benefit dance will be held at our Lodge 84 Hall, 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas, Saturday, April 19th from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with music by the popular Czech Harvesters who feature polkas, waltzes and country/western music. As always, it will be a fun - night for all we hope and the most important thing will be people in attendance at our dance.

We invite all our members, friends, all ex - players and wives, also we hope you will invite someone to come along because we need funds to operate this season. With rising costs and a depleted fund, we beg, NO, but PLEAD and hope for your support.

The season started Tuesday night, April 15th at Samuel Grand at 6:30 p.m. Our team has been practicing trying to get in shape and be ready for our opening game. We were scheduled to play in a tournament during the weekend of April 12th and 13th in Austin, Texas (a 2 - day affair which we were to play at least 5 games which should be good for the team). We haven't played a practice game to date.

As the season progresses, I hope to give reports and results of our games again this season.

Before closing, may I again remind our friends, members and softball supporters to please make plans to come out to our dance SATURDAY NIGHT, APRIL 19TH. Seriously, and honestly, the softball team will deeply appreciate your support and your attendance at our dance. We must have your help to survive another season.

Let us all meet at Lodge 84, Saturday night, April 19th and enjoy one heck of a good dance for all; the admission will be $5 per person. A Columbia ham and other door prizes will be given at the dance.

Rest Home No. H Celebrates Spring Festival During the festivities of the annual S.P. J.S.T. Rest Home Spring Festival, Frank Green and Mary Ellen McAdams were crowned "King and Queen" by Mr. Pete Blomquist. Mr. Green was a State Farm Insurance agent for 25 years in Taylor, Texas. He served in the Army during World War I. He was born in Carthage, Illinois 31 July 1895 and belongs to the First United Methodist Church. He has one niece, Sandra Hetzel of Houston, Texas.

Mary Ellen McAdams was a secretary for the State Education Agency for 11 years. She belongs to the United Methodist Church and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She has a twin brother, Prewitt Arledge, from Taylor and 7 nieces. She was born in Taylor, Texas 11 March 1903.

Mrs. Frances Schwenker, administrator, welcomed everyone to the festival and introduced Pastor Felix Sager who gave the Easter devotion. Everyone joined Pastor and Mrs. Sager in singing the "Old Rugged Cross." Blake Hamilton delighted everyone on his electric keyboard by playing "We Are the World" and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." The children from the the Seventh Street Day Care Center and children of the staff members modeled their new Easter outfits.

Refreshments were served to the guests and residents in the game room and dining room. Helping with refreshments were Mrs. Louise Sager and Mrs. Ben Braun.

Dear Members: Our library and museum are constantly growing; people who visit them and see what we have here want to become a part themselves and start sending things that they intended to keep for themselves. Here thousands of people will see them, where if they kept them, no one would have seen them and besides they could get stolen as has happened to several of them.

I am in trouble, again; as you know I have asked for some mannequins and the Institute of Texas Culture brought us two fine lady mannequins but without hair so I need some wigs, (wigs that you decided that you would not wear, again), so please send them to us; a few pair of ladies' pantyhoses would help even if they have a runner or two; we can manage them easily.

Then we have a little country boy about six years old who needs a pair of well - worn shoes any type just so they are shoes and little Johnnie will be prouder standing there with shoes on.

Things you may plan on throwing away just send them to us and we will place your name in our Golden Book of donors where it will remain forever.

For the handicapped, we spent several thousand dollars to construct a ramp which persons in a wheelchair can roll up easily or if you don't want to take the steps just come up this easy going ramp and see what we have.

There is no charge to see the LAM Department, so come up and see for yourself; there is so much to see that you will be pleasantly surprised, so come soon.

Lodge 84, Dallas Reporting Dear Members: Correspondence from the Supreme Lodge concerning the photo contest and youth recruiting were read by Secretary Salac at our last meeting, also a note from the Wm. Houdek family and the UTA Czech Club.

Brother Jarma reported workout for the ball team has started for this season opening April 10th. He invited all to the benefit dance for April 19th.

The Decorating Committee thanked all for help of the 76th Anniversary Decor. President Schulz thanked all for the kitchen help as well as Sister Bessie Petr for cooking the meal for the same occasion.

House Committee Chairman Salac reported lights on parking lots were

fixed and our thanks to Brother Salac and Sister Salac for cleanup on the parking lots.

Youth Leader Petr reported the youth met for meetings before rehearsals for the 76th Anniversary.

Many thanks for lovely program as well as decorations used for this occasion. Sister Bessie reported on the La Grange youth leaders' meeting.

Czech Culture were to meet March 24th.

The Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council met in Ennis and voted to donate to the Meals - on - Wheels of Ennis and the Brady Center of Dallas. Next meeting was scheduled for April 10th at the Catholic Czech Club, hosted by KJT and KJZT. We welcome Sister Cindy Pokladnik as Sunshine Committee helper. Our thanks to Sister Dorothy Prasifka for many years of help to this important office.

Czech Home Villages Identified Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume 2, indentified nearly 7,000 Czech and Slovak immigrants who arrived in New Orleans during 1879 1899 and in Galveston during 1896 1906. This data, which was abstracted from various microfilm sources, also lists the home village in Czechoslovakia for a majority of these immigrants as well as their destinations in Texas, Oklahoma and many Midwestern and Western states.

This volume includes pictures and data on immigrant ships as well as instructions on how genealogical research may be performed in Czechoslovakia on a mail order basis through the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. Czech - Americans from throughout the United States are expected to gather in Dallas, Texas October 3, 4 and 5, 1986 to honor the Czech Moravian community of Texas and celebrate the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of Texas' independence.

Texans of Czech descent comprise a large segment of the state's population. The Czech language, brought to Texas by 19th century immigrants, remains the third most widely - spoken language in the state.

Organizers expect that this event, which will be a once - in - a - lifetime celebration for many, will be a gathering place for representatives of the entire Czech - Moravian population of Texas. Various programs and entertainments, a banquet, a symposium devoted to historical subjects, a special bus tour of Dallas, polka dances and other activities have been planned for October 3rd and 4th. The celebration will climax Sunday, October 5th with programs in the Cotton Bowl and at the State Fairgrounds in Dallas. An exhibition illustrating the history and cultural heritage of Czech Texans is scheduled to open at the State Fair September 26th and run for 31 days.

The participation of groups and individuals from throughout the United States is needed to insure the success of this celebration. Particularly ambitious is the organizers' goal of filling the Cotton Bowl with participants and spectators. The Cotton Bowl programs will showcase several aspects of this group's colorful cultural heritage.

1. Dancing of the BESEDA, the National Dance of Czechoslovakia; of Choral singing Z. Czechoslovakian folk songs; 3. Choreographed dancing and singing by children and youth groups; 4. A gymnastic exhibition similar to the gigantic Spartakiada exhibitions of Czechoslovakia by gymnasts of the Sokol organizations.

It is expected that each of the numerous Czech - Moravian communities in Texas will be represented in the Cotton Bowl program by BESEDA DANCERS and other participants. Instructions and information about each of these activities is available by writing to the American - Czech Culture Society.

Time still remains for interested groups to obtain instruction materials and information about participating in the programs. Instructions and music for dancing the BESEDA are available by writing the address listed below to the attention of "Beseda." Choral groups may request the words and music for the choral program by writing to "Song." Children and youth groups may participate in the programs by requesting instructions from "Youth." Inquiries about the Sokol gymnastic exhibition should be addressed to "Sokol." Organizers of the Texas Czech State Fair Sesquicentennial Celebration expect that this special event in Dallas for October 3th, 4th and 5th will be the highpoint of the Commemorative Sesquicentennial Activities for the

hundreds of thousands of Texans of Czech Ancestry.

District V Training Class COME ONE COME ALL! Attention All Interested Adults, Youth Leaders, Assistants, LITs, and Sales Representatives: The District Youth Counselors throughout the State, as well as our State Youth Director Sue Meadows, have been taking a serious look at how many youth we have as members who are not participating in or know about the SPJST YOUTH PROGRAM. Much progress has been made this past year under the supervision of Sue Meadows and we want to continue on our steady uphill climb.

We are attempting to develop the programs in each district and local lodges by educating all interested.

Sunday, April 20th at Lodge 142, 5508 Nolda, we will be having a District V Training Class. It will begin sharply at 2:30 p.m. and continue until ?? We

will have discussion of the entire program, point system, changes in the Rule Book, Camp, YAD, new ideas for socials, games and crafts. Sue Meadows, the SYD, will be on hand to pass on fresh ideas on how to put pep in our youth meetings, along with giving us all a shot of energy and excitement.

Sales Representatives, please try to attend. We will be discussing how you can help the youth program, along with how we can give you a tool to gain leads. We need to work together to help each other. Our youth of today are the adults of tomorrow and we need them to carry on the teachings and heritage of our SPJST. Everyone try to attend; this is an important meeting. Lodges without a current youth club, your youth can still go to camp, participate at YAD; COME FIND OUT HOW! Refreshments, sandwiches, etc, will be available,along with all supplies you may need.

Robstown Youth Club members are making Easter Baskets on March 8th for Dos Mundos Day Care Center.

Dear Readers, Once again, I will make a short report on the activities of the Robstown Lodge No. 117. Youth Club.

February 16th, we attended the performance of the United States Air Force Band of the West from Lackland Air Force Base of San

Wednesday, April 16, 1986—VESTNiK/11 Antonio at Bayfront Plaza Auditorium. February 15th, the Sesquicentennial Wagon Train in Robstown (this wagon train was on its 3,000 - mile trek through Texas). A movie trip on March 1st followed by eating out at Pizza Inn. Our monthly meeting was held March 8th. After adjournment of the meeting, the youth clubbers were put to work on making Easter Baskets with some help from the adults. These baskets were filled with Easter candy and delivered to Dos Mundos Day Care Center where the children range from 2 to 5 years of age. I delivered the baskets. March 27th. The children's eyes lit up when they were given a basket; also that day, cookies were taken to Westwood Manor Nursing Home. March 22nd, a trip was made to Hazel Bazemore Park on Nueces River; as always, upon arrival there, the youth members were ready to explore the nature trails. Everyone brought snacks and drinks. It was a fun afternoon for those who came.

April 12th -- Czech Festival at Bayfront Plaza where the youth club will have three booths (this will be in the past when this letter will be published). The youth clubbers will have craft, candy, pies, cakes, jelly and cookies to offer for sale.

April 19th -- Regular meeting followed by a movie trip.

April 20th -- District VII meeting in San Antonio. Each youth club will have a booth, also a cake walk, which will offer cakes, live plants and artificial floral arrangements. Each youth club must bring 2 cakes, 2 live plants, and one floral arrangement.

Proceeds from this will be to the District Youth Fund. This plan was discussed and planned by youth leaders of District VII. April 26th -- A trip to Corpus Christi Museum where a performance is held every Saturday on the Front Porch. Everyone is to bring a sack lunch; we will go to Cole Park.

Many other activities are planned and they are: Bowling" trip, family picnic at Hazel Bazemore Park, graduation supper at K - Bobs at Five Points, Fraternal Fest in Temple, beach trip, District VII outing at HEB Camp at Leakey, swimming, District VII YAD, and Camp Val Verde. These activities should keep the youth occupied.

Dear Vestnik Readers, April 4th, 5th and 6th, Lodge No. 74 youth had a campout. We arrived at Ratcliff Lake in Davy Crockett National Park Friday and camped for two nights and three days. During this time we fished, hiked, went boating in paddle boats, threw frisbees, played campfire games, and roasted marshmallows. Most of us learned many things about camping; like how to wash our own dishes, pitch tents, build a campfire, and many ways to survive and find your way in the forest at night. We wrapped camp up with a midnight hike at 9 p.m. Saturday and a final game of volleyball Sunday morning.

I think it was a fun experience and everyone who attended had a good time.

April 17th is the last time residents of the Northern Hemisphere will be able to get a good look at Halley's Comet during its current visit. People in the northern third of the United States -- above 42 degrees, 36 minutes north latitude -- will be unable to see the comet at all. But viewing should be easy in clear skies south of about 40 degrees north latitude, or a line running roughly through Red Bluff, California; Boulder, Colorado; Springfield, Illinois and Philadelphia.

Comet watchers should take binoculars to a dark viewing site, far from city lights. The comet should be visible about an hour before sunrise above the southern horizon. ***
