Darwin Dabbs, representative from the CA Program, presented two Appreciation Plaques to Academy Lodge 177 and Cyclone Lodge 24 for their outstanding donations to the Child Abuse Program during 1985. Permanent chair of Czech, language and culture to be established.

Interested repesentatives of various Czech organizations recently met in Temple to discuss the creation of a permanent chair of Czech language and culture at the University of Texas or Texas A&M University. "Plans call for raising an amount of $500,000 which will be matched by the selected university," said Professor Joseph J. Skrivanek, Jr., president of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT). "The Foundation hopes that everyone of Czech ancestry can support this important project." Make checks payable to CEFT. *** Perhaps some of you have been wondering what TOCA represents.

TOCA is an independent organization organized to promote and coordinate Czech - related events and activities in Texas during the Sesquicentennial Year. The Czech name Texane Ceskeho Puvodu translates .into Texans of Czech Ancestry. TOCA does not have any affiliation with, or show preference for any fraternal order, religious denomination or other group, but is highly dependent on such Czech - founded organizations and their members for the fulfillment of its objectives.

To insure that all TOCA efforts enjoy success, "Your help is needd."

"There are many areas of involvement open on various TOCA activities, events and projects," said Brother Albert J. Blaha. "We are looking for additional volunteers of individuals who want to get involved in the TOCA Sesquicentennial celebration and projects." The TOCA Executive Committee met February 1, 1986 at Temple Junior College in Temple, Texas. Several project advisors were also present.

There was a general review of past accomplishments and a discussion of plans and procedures for future involvement in Sesquicentennial activities. The group considered ways to support and encourage area representatives to start up activities and projects in their assigned areas.

Plans were set to contact various Czech organizations throughout Texas to help in distributing TOCA information to their membership. It was concluded that the TOCA effort was on schedule and everyone displayed a great deal of enthusiasm.

The comprehensive TOCA Handbook, "Modus Operandi" has now been distributed to TOCA area representatives and other key personnel involved in the TOCA project. The handbook answers many questions relating to TOCA and its plans and projects. It was prepared by Brother Albert Blaha, and revised and

edited by Brother Calvin Chervenka and published by RVOS. *** David Crockett and his Czech descendants. It was recently learned that there are Texans of Czech Ancestry who are descended from Davy Crockett, the famous Alamo hero. Howard Stasney and Sue Stasney, originally from Bryan but now working in Houston, attended the Czech Genealogy workshop recently held at Crosby. It was learned that their family came from Novy Rise and Cerveny Hradek. It was discerned that their mother was a direct descendant of Davy Crockett: We Czechs are happy to have those Davy Crockett descendants among us during this special Sesquicentennial Year! *** Czechs in the Sesquicentennial 1986 The Sesquicentennial Year is here and all good persons of Czech ancestry are asking "What can we do to participate in this Texas Sesquicentennial Year"? Activities or events in which Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) may and should participate are here summarized in brief form: Heirlooms and relics brought to Texas by our immigrant ancestors should be placed into exhibits, libraries and museums for others to see. This includes the "Reise pas" (passport), "Krestni listy" (baptismal certificate), old bibles and letters, etc. For advice and a sheet of guidelines on how you may do this safely, write or call: Brother Otto Hanus, SPJST LAM curator and advisor, P.O. Box 3147, Temple, Texas 76501; phone (817) 773 - 5784. *** Social Security checks to change look. If you've been getting SSI checks, here is an announcement for you. Starting in April, you will receive new Statue of Liberty checks instead of the familiar gold ones. The new SSI checks will be printed on pastel paper and mailed in blue envelopes to help identify them as SSI payments. The change is part of a government - wide switch which is expected to save more than $6 million annually and make the checks harder to tamper with *** The Senate Finance Committee in its mark - up of tax overhaul legislation is challenging members of the House Ways and Means Committee to agree on when such legislation would take effect or risk placing the future of tax reform in jeopardy. The House tax bill, HR 3838, has an effective date of 1 January 1986, but a letter signed by 18 to 20 members of the panel states that they will not meet to confer with their House colleagues unless the House agrees to the Senate date of 1 January 1987.

In further action of the committee current law is retained for all tax exempt organizations engaged in insurance activities. There is no study of fraternal benefit societies in the mark - up sheets. This leaves substantial room for rewriting both the House and Senate approaches in the conference committee later this year.

Lodge 18, Elgin March Meeting Lodge Jan tiika No. 18 in Elgin held its monthly meeting March 18, 1986 with 26 members in attendance.

President Roy Simank opened the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Brother Rueben Krieg.

Roll call of officers showed all present except Youth Leader Curtis Young.

The minutes from our February meeting were approved as read. This was followed by reports from various officers and chairpersons.

A sad feeling was experienced by all while we spent a moment of silence for our deceased Sister Peggy Felfe. She will be missed by all; her smile and cheerfulness were always a pleasant sight. We express our sorrow to her husband, Floyd, and the rest of the family.

We congratulate the officers who were elected to District II and especially our own Brother Leslie Gustafson,who was elected second vice president.

We hope everyone enjoyed their visit to our lodge. The event was a great success and we thank everyone who had a hand in making it a success.

54, West Approves Contribution

Lodge

The first quarterly meeting of 1986 of Lodge 54, West was held March 2nd.

Jennifer Kocian led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Everyone remained standing for a few moments in memory of our departed Brother Willie T. Mrkos, who passed away December 28, 1985 and Sister Marie Dulak, who died January 22, 1986 and for other departed brothers and sisters from other lodges.

A roll call of officers was held by Sister Anne Emery. All were present with the exception of Treasurer Freddie Kaluza and Financial Secretary Janice Kaluza. We were very sorry to hear that Brandon Kaluza, son of Freddie and Janice Kaluza, is very ill and was in the hospital in Houston.

We should all keep Brandon and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Secretary Anne: Emery read the minutes of our:Dec:ember 8th meeting.

These minutes were approved as read.

Correspondence was also read by Sister Emery.

Sister . Ma-xine. Sefcik gave the Insurance Account report for the first quarter which was approved as read.

There were two transferees into Lodge 54, namely, Catherine C. Recek from Lodge 154, Fort Worth and Carolyn J. Hanzlicek from Lodge 35, Elk, one new juvenile member, two policy changes from 20 - year pay to Special Premium Life, one paidup policy on Shelia Chupik, three policies placed on extended - term insurance, and three policies were cancelled. Sister Sefcik then read a letter from Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas indicating our 8 percent insurance refund to Lodge 54 for 1985 was $1,394.07.

There was no treasurer's report given but it will be included in the minutes of this meeting.

Members on the sick list were Bohus Chupik who recently had surgery, Brother Ernest Tobola, Sr., (residing at the West Haven) and Brandon Kaluza.

A discussion was held regarding the collection of annual dues for active members since we have been approved for direct billing.

Brother Rudy Sefcik read the Rules & Regulations pertaining to this subject; a motion was made that we amend the R&Rs to state: "that each member shall pay local dues voluntarily rather than be billed for them. The motion passed and carried.

Vice President John Emery reported on the revisions made by the Rules & Regulations Committee which met to revise the R&Rs that were adopted in the past years. Some articles were deleted and some were re - worded.

Sister Bennie Kacir gave a members' hours report of fraternal service and charitable disbursements. The totals for our lodge that were submitted to Supreme Lodge were: 7,732% -- Hours $6,065.85 -- Monetary Donations This represents reports from only fifteen member families. It is very important that members keep records

of all of their time and money spent on these activities and turn them in to the lodge at the end of the year. The numbers would certainly be much larger if more members would participate in this important cause; these activities help keep our lodges exempt from taxation.

Sister. Maxine Sefcik suggested that our lodge sponsor a float for Westfest this year.

A motion was made that we donate $50 for a float. Motion passed and carried.

Brother Rudy Sefcik explained that a fund is being established for the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) and a discussion was held regarding our lodge's donation to the establishment of a "Czech Chair" at the University of Texas or Texas A&M University. Our lodge will ,donate $50, Sister Maxine Sefcik offered to donate $25, and Sister Beanie Kacir offered a donation of $25; a total of $100 will be donated from Lodge No. 54, West. We certainly appreciate the generosity of these two lodge sisters.

We have several members who will be eligible to receive their 50 - year membership pins: namely, Wilma T. Kizer, Willie Klaus, Adele Nemecek, Method Snapka and Oswald Vana. It was decided to have the pins mailed to these members by the Supreme Lodge.

President Kocian announced that the Sokol Gymnastic Association of West, who is leasing our hall, is in the process of obtaining a beer license and the name of the hall will be changed to Lone Star Hall. I believe this was the name of our hall originally.

President Kocian appointed Lillie Mynar, Eleanor Uptmore and Josephine Kocian to the Food Committee. The types of refreshments for our meetings will be planned by these ladies and will be announced in the Vestnik. We appreciate members taking part in the refreshments and bringing the type of refreshments that are requested.

Sister Maxine Sefcik donated the birthday cake honoring all members whose birthdays fell in the first quarter of 1986. Sister Lillie Mynar and Sister Mildred Grossman were the only celebrants present and all members present sang "Happy Birthday" to these ladies.

Sister Mona Zahirniak offered to donate the birthday cake for the next quarterly meeting.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed the social that followed, with snacks and refreshments.

66 March Meeting

Lodge

Our meeting, which was held March 16th, was called to order by President Ray Orsag. Larry Yates and Bill Warren presented the flags, while Michelle Shelton led everyone in the pledge.

All officers were present and we had one visitor, Brother Rudy Zalman of Lodge No. 35, Elk The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Sisters Engelke and Pruitt read correspondence from Julie Rejcek and

President Leshikar. President Leshikar's letter touched on many subjects, one of which is the upcoming SPJST Sesquicentennial Celebration June 8th.

Minutes of the Board meeting were read by Sister Langlotz. Also, Sister Libbie Parma reported that the Trust Fund had received a donation from Emma and Homer McDugal in memory of Silas Smith. She was also presented with a check from the lodge for the Trust Fund.

Sister Orsag gave the Entertainment Committee report. She thanked everyone for bringing a casserole for the meal everyone enjoyed. She also thanked Jewel Warhol and Cory Pruitt for making the delicious cookies everyone enjoyed. Sister Kofnovec took over Sister Brem's position on the committee.

The Fraternal Committee report was given by Sister Mueller. She read a thank you from Dorothy Navarro.

Also, the money for two tickets to the annual Poor Man's Supper were purchased as a donation. The members then voted that the following individuals receive a donation: Elsie Moore -- $200, Blanche Lewis -- $100, and the Elm Mott Fire Dept. -- $200.

Sister Nors reported that get well cards were sent to Philomena Miller, Angela Poehls and Raymond Chudej.

Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mazanec, Sr. New members accepted this month are Dennis Holub, Judy Holub, Bobby R. Stripling, Maria Leyendecker, Dustin Nemec, Susan D. Leuschner, Rudolph Hikel III and Amy Hikel.

Vice President George Pauling then asked all members present to be sure and read through the Rules & Regulations to see if they thought any changes were necessary. The lodge is in the process of revising them and asks for all members' cooperation in this matter. Brother Locke then asked that a member should make a note as to which section or article the change is on so it will make the eventual process easier.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt then came forward and suggested that we change our April meeting from the third Sunday. This was due to it falling on the same Sunday that the District III spring meeting was scheduled. The members voted to change our meeting to the fourth Sunday, APRIL 27TH! Brother Pauling then suggested that the door prize be increased to $5.

Members voted for this proposal.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported that there were 20 members present and 4 visitors. The youth will be taking a tour of the SPJST Museum in Temple, April 5th. They are to meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Southgate Shopping Center in Waco. The youth club made a $25 donation to the Easter Seals. She also stated that camp forms were handed out and they need to be returned completely filled out at the next meeting.

The youth held an egg decorating contest. Winners in ages 5 to 12: 1st -Melissa Owen, 2nd -- Candace Pavlicek, 3rd -- Ashley Locke, and 4th -- Chris' Owen. The teen division winners were: 1st -- Jamie Yates, 2nd -Donna Stanislav, and 3rd -- L. Yates.

There were 63 members present for the adult meeting. Our door prize winner and first recipient of $5 was Sister Annie Hanus.

Members present with birthdays in March were Maurine Trefny, Jessica Nors, Kathy Warren, Dorothy Warren and Kevin Powell. A "Happy Birthday" was sung by the members.

Remember! Our next meeting has been changed from the third Sunday to

the fourth which is April 27th. Please make a note of this change on your calendar.

87, Temple To Meet

SPJST Lodge No. 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, March 14th at 7:30 p.m. with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

The meeting was called to order and Flag Bearer Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Deceased members were remembered in silent tribute.

Various reports were given and old and new business topics were discussed.

Additional insurance was taken by Holly and Shawn Hobbs.

Annie Plsek announced that a covered dish meal would be served at the April 11th meeting at 7 p.m.

Members are to bring a covered dish of meat and vegetable and salad or dessert of their choice for family and guest(s).

Get well wishes are extended to Edward Hurta and all who are convalescing.

Jerry Valchar is working with the Sesquicentennial Program, TOCA (Texans of Czech Ancestry).

Millie Schiller was guest for the evening.

"Al Pierson" and the Big Band USA will appear in the Chandelier Ballroom Saturday, April 12th. This is a DRESS - CODE dance with advance tickets on sale in the lodge office at $20 per couple.

The monthly lodge meeting to be held Monday, April 14th will feature the fifty - year honorees. We have a long list of members enjoying fifty years of SPJST. The Choral Group still "holds rehearsals every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in joining them please call Director Tim Kostom or drop in any Tuesday evening.

Blue Room party tickets are on sale in the office. Table reservations will be made when six tickets or more are purchased. Sunday, April 27th is the date for this fun evening starting at 4 p.m. Dinner, dancing, and cocktails are all included in the ticket price of $10 each.

Friday, April 18th, the "Telstars" will be back with us. Remember, all Friday dances start at 8:30 p.m.

The "Knights of Dixie," playing ballroom and variety music with that Dixieland beat, will appear Saturday, April 19th.

Laura Warnasch is feeling very well as she improves from her surgery. She is out and going again but carefully.

Estelle Kelly is at home hobbling around after having a joint implant in her foot. During her six - day hospital stay, she also had a fluid blister or bursa drained from the side of the same foot.

The second in the series concerning our elected officers features First Vice President Marceil Malak. Marceil was born in La Grange, Texas to Willie and

Wednesday, April 9, 1986—VESTNIK/5 Esther Meiners. She is the oldest of six children. Sister Nina Levien lives in Rockdale, and Sister Rosella Presswood resides in Plantersville.

Brother Royce is in Houston, Curtis lives in Pinehurst, and Wallace lives on the home farm in La Grange.

Marceil graduated from Carmine High School and went on to business school in Austin. She came to Houston and worked for Tax Research Associates, Anderson - Clayton, and several oil companies in their accounting departments before opening Malak Bookkeeping Services in 1964. Marceil's business is now Data Recording Services. She is a member of National Society of Public Accountants, The Texas Association of Public Accountants and is an enrolled agent for the IRS, as well as a practicing accountant.

Wedding bells rang for Marceil and William (Bill) Malak in August 1953.

Although Bill is from New Waverly, they met in the big city of Houston.

Bill is a maintenance foreman for a local machine shop. He and Marceil have one daughter, Arlene, who is currently in the process of moving to Dallas. The family are all members of All Saints Catholic Church.

Marceil joined Lodge 88 in 1965 and so did daughter Arlene. Bill had previously joined in 1963. Almost from the date of joining Lodge 88, Marceil has been active and held many responsible positions. She was assistant youth leader, youth leader, served on the Bingo Committee, chairman of the Auditing Committee, recording secretary, and now first vice president.

She says nothing really, really exciting has happened to them so far so they are looking forward to an exciting retirement in the future when they go back to La Grange. Marceil has served Lodge 88 proudly in all her positions and she is a credit to the SPJST and to Lodge No.. 88.

92 To Honor 50-Year Members

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 92's regular meeting was called to order Sunday, March 9th.

The first order of business was "Happy Birthday" sung to Brother John Paprskar, our vice president.

After the meeting, the lodge had its Easter egg hunt, sponsored by the youth club, which is always great fun for the children as well as the adults.

The youth club is very active in lodge activities this year. There are over 60 youth members in Lodge 92, so the possibilities of a strong and active youth clubs are tremendous. During spring break the youth club had an outing to the movies and has planned several dances for this year along with numerous activities planned for the summer. If you are a member of Lodge 92, please come to the next regular meeting April 13, and join the youth club and participate in the activities.

The Ladies' Circle wishes to donate a gift to Lodge 92 again this year. A well - needed light was suggested. .Thank you ladies for your generosity.

Every month the lodge is decorated

by Sister Joyce Tesar according to a particular holiday being celebrated that month. This task takes Sister Tesar many hours and a lot of energy.

We always appreciate the flowers and decorations. It makes our meetings so pleasant and special. Thank you, Sister Tesar! She also does our wonderful *

meals. Sister Evelyn Spacek, Brother Carl Zich and Sister 'Christine Zich cooked a delicious lunch for after the meeting.

Brother Richard Hubenak, our guide, has been very ill. We miss him at the meetings and hope he has a speedy recovery.

At the next meeting April 13th, the 50 - year members' pins will be presented. This is a very special occasion and we hope our attendance is a good one to help celebrate this event. Brother Mike Watkins will barbecue chicken and sausage for this special meeting.

Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Easter Sunday was a beautiful day.

We had a good turnout at the picnic which was enjoyed by all. There is always plenty of food and refreshments. Everyone stayed until the darkness came upon us.

We extend a special thanks to Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm.

They are gracious hosts and a lot of the newcomers thought it was so nice of them to let us enjoy their beautiful place. There was plenty of room for the Easter egg hunt, beer hunt, volleyball, baseball, horseshoes, and a lot of fraternalism.

Sister Annette Schwabowski of Chicago is visiting in the homes of her sisters, Henrietta Milan, Tina Cox and her daughter, Deanne. She thought the picnic was great.

After 12:00 keg beer and soft drinks will be served. The meeting will start at 11:00 a.m., so get your lodge members together, register early and win the CASH for your lodge. At 12:00 lunch will be served $4 for adults and $2.50 for children under 12. The menu will be barbecue and all the trimmings.

The youth club will have a short program after lunch and the meeting will resume around 1:30 p.m.

Don't forget BINGO after the meeting with cash prizes-pay for your gas to Fort Worth with your prize money.

We had two members to receive their 50 - year pins; they are Nolie Hlanak and Jerome Tomecek.

Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends: A hello to all of you throughout Texas from our lodge members.

We lost a dear lodge brother, Brother John Joseph Bronikowski.

May he rest in peace.

Our lodge's recent meeting had a large group of good - hearted members attending to hear all the fine reports.

Sister Erlene Lymann was the lucky attendance prize winner. She also suffered lots of misery in her past illness and all of us were happy to see her back. Welcome back Erlene and James Lymann.

Lillia Mae Peter also attended our meeting. I suppose Victor Peter, founder of Lodge 172 and past president, was painting their resort home or fishing. Our Board of Trustees chairman was fishing on Lake Tahoe.

6/VESTNICK—Wedviesday, April 9; 1%,43 John T. Mikeska and Esther L. Mikeska were very sick with the flu and fever for the past 21/2 weeks.

Brother Chris Holton sprained his back while pushing a ton truck into his driveway.

Just a reminder to our brothers and sisters that our monthly lodge meetings are held every 4th Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Also, remember, to visit our lodge home dances plus other public activities when they are announced for your information. We are proud of our huge facilities that can host large undertakings in the city of Pasadena.

I also want to remind everyone of the Czech Heritage Day April 12th in Corpus Christi; read your Vestnik for more details about the event. My wife and I are almost on our way to this function, because we love to go to such activities. There will be other Czech Days in Dallas, Ennis, Temple, Wallis and Victoria, and visit with Brother Matt Vanek and wife.

First Vice President Dan Berry and wife Margie Lee (entertainment lady), are back among the working members.

Bartender Julius Zella served the thirsty guests in the bar department, with Brother Tommy Wallace assisting. Sister Leona Zella attended her duties in the modern kitchen during our recent dance. The fans enjoyed Nachos, popcorn and coffee.

Brother E.C. Baker and wife, Jo Ann, were in charge of ticket sales. Thanks for a job well - done! President Jerry Dressler, a good leader, went around to chat with everyone and gave out tickets for drawings of lucky winners for our next dance; Margie Lee Berry, also assisted.

The 1986 year is quickly running by fast and Easter is, already in the past.

Our economy went underground.

Once, again, I want to remind everyone to visit our Lodge 172 in Pasadena because we enjoy having members and friends attending from other lodges; you will be treated cordially.

On behalf of Lodge 172, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the surviving families of our deceased brothers and sisters who passed away recently. May their loved ones rest in eternal peace. The 18th of March . our lodge had its meeting at 7:30 p.m. Our President Louis Grochoske leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and all remained standing in a moment of silence in memory of our departed sisters and brothers.

The meeting was poorly • attended, so here is hoping more attend the April meeting.

Hope everyone had a nice Easter.

The weather was perfect, but we sure do need a good rain, not a storm. The country is getting pretty and green, the flowers are showing up, but the bluebonnets are small this year. The gardens are looking good and we are enjoying our fresh garden salads.

Let's all remember the SPJST Fraternal Festival, "A Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration" at Mayborn Convention Center, Temple, Texas June 8, 1986. It will be nice to meet with other members and friends.

I hear some of our members and friends had a wonderful time on their Caribbean Cruise.

We express our sincere condolence to David Donaghue and his family on the loss of his mother. May she rest in peace.

Some members received a letter from Dennis Barabas who is in South Korea and he is looking forward to having some of his family visit with him. We wish them a safe and joyful trip.

After the lodge meeting, we adjourned to a social hour and some goodies. The attendance prize was won

We had a very successful dance March 22nd. Eddie Thompson played his disc jockey music and everyone enjoyed thot- We thank Ken and Betty Thornton for hosting the month of March -- a job well done!

Hosts for April are Jerry and. Gloria Sizemore. April 12th, come and dance to country/western music. The disc jockey will be Joel Towers. Oh! that's me. Come on out and have a good time. I'll pay your favorite songs.

April 26th -- don't miss this one: The Kountry Kickers Band will be playing for your enjoyment. We had a full house the last time they played and we expect another one so make plans to be here.

Our lodge work days have been outstanding and the changes are fantastic. Golly, come and see for yourself and enjoy the fun. You are in for a big surprise! Thanks to the dedicated people who have been so generous with their time and money for all the improvements.

Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies'

Dear Members and Friends: Now that spring is here again we all can feel a sense of renewal of life stirring all around us. We can see the tiny leaves beginning to sprout again. from bare limbs of trees, and we can see flowers and plants slowly pushing up from the earth which has protected them throughout the cold winter months. We can see the busy birds flying about trying to decide where to build their nest and stopping only long enough to catch an unsuspecting insect.

Our meeting opened with the following officers present: President Florence Greer, Vice President Dona Hubenak, Secretary Hermina Cihacek (substituting for Frances Grizzard), and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek.

Our president welcomed all visitors and members who had been absent for some time. We were glad to see Mary Ann Krivanek, Mary Pavey and Clara Marchioni again. We hope to see you more often.

Esta Belle Hubenak thanked the members for cards sent while she was in the hospital. Maggie Konecny also thanked them for cards sent to her and

Clara Cohen thanked the members for cards sent to Henry and Annie Langer who are in a rest home in Weatherford.

Sunshine Committee Chairperson Lillie McMillen read a thank you card from Martha Durham. She reported sending cards to Bennie Bartek, Sarah Wade and. Joe Merlick.

The door prize donated by Clara Cohen was won by Mary Powers. The Reindeer, donated by Marie Prill and Eva Dockery, was won by Clara Marchioni.

Clara Cohen explained about the cost of our "Book of Members" and gave credit to Florence Greer for typing and arranging all names in alphabetical order before turning it over to her to be printed.

Joyce Tesar announced the coming dances and Esta Belle Hubenak gave a short talk about the Youth Club's Easter egg hunt.

Under new business, Mary Powers made a motion to pay for lights to be put above the ,presidents' pictures and memorials in our lodge. Betty Billington seconded the motion. The motion carried.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays in February and March. Day Festival In Dallas

As we all know, this is a very special year for Texas ---The Sesquicentennial! Every ethnic group in our Lone Star State is contributing something for this celebration.

In Dallas, there will be a Czech Day Festival April 12th, at 2 p.m. at the Casa View Library, which is located on the corner of Ferguson Road at Joaquin Drive (off of Gus Thomasson Road). There is available parking.

Our program will start with a dance number by the SPJST Lodge No. 84 Youth Group. These young people have won several competitions in the State of Texas.

We will also have the well - known Texas Czech Beseda dancers from SPJST Lodge No. 130. They have danced in several countries on the European continent. They perform very frequently in our own State of Texas. We are really honored to have them!

For that extra authentic touch, we will have Norbert Blazek playing his accordion.

We will be in our "Kroje" so our friends can enjoy our beautiful costumes.

We will serve coffee, kolache, cookies and punch for the youngsters.

Heritage Society Of Texas Reporting

President Marjorie Matula of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas reminds members of the State Society that their dues are to be paid by April 15, 1986. She also reminds members of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society that their dues are payable by April 10, 1986.

American-Czech CS Undertakes Huge Project The American - Czech Culture Society is composed of Czech fraternal societies, and Czech mutual insurance associations; namely, CSA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, SPJST, SVPS, WFLA, American Sokol Organization, Catholic Czech Club, Circle of Czech Women and the Historical Society of the Czech Club.

We have been sponsoring a "Czech Day" at the State Fair of Texas since the early 1950s. This year - 1986 - there is something very special, "The Texas Sesquicentennial" - something that can only happen once in every 50 years.

We are planning a three - day celebration - Octotber 3, 4 and 5, 1986 with a "Souvenir Program Book."

Second Annual Heritage Festival BAYFRONT PLAZA CONVENTION CENTER CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS April 12, 1986

Monday evening, March 31st, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area that give services and communion, also to the volunteers who do services in the home to the residents for the month of March.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Report Edmund Brandl is the new resident to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in March. Staff members are Alice Marie Oberrender (LVN), Deborah Ann McDonald (NA), Molissie B. Baines (NA), Carolyn E. Moore (NA) and Gloria D. Raven (NA).

Welcome back again from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond are Eddie Schulz and Annie Walcik. We are sorry to hear Frank Richardson is again hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital and wish him a speedy recovery.

Sorry we missed mentioning Georgia Linderman last month who was sick and recuperating at home.

The flag mentioned in Gladys Hix's life history was given to Albert George County Library in Needville.

The donations given by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Walcik, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Raesner and family, Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Bacica, Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Bacica, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. B.N. Haas, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Gurecky and family, Willie Walcik and Bennie Susan were in memory of Victor Huff of Corpus Christi, to buy something for the residents in the new Activity Room was greatly appreciated.

The donation given by Hilda Tinsley for the birthday party was also greatly appreciated.

The senior citizens' luncheons given by the Immanuel United Church of Christ and St. Michael's Catholic Church were attended by Tony Ondracek, Annie Stavinoha, Virgie Richardson, Martha Stuchly and Hilda Cole. The senior citizens social held at the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church was attended and enjoyed by Agnes Perkins, Virgie Richardson, Tony Ondracek, Annie Stavinoha, Emma Tielke and Martha Wleczyk.

Edwin Woytek was transferred to Brazosview Health Care Center, Richmond, Texas and we will miss him.

Monday afternoon, March 10th, the Hope Lutheran Church came and had services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards. They also brought prizes for bingo. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

The e KCs came to play bingo Tuesday evening, March 11th and 25th with the residents. The residents reported a fine time.

Monday afternoon, March 17th, the home had a combination St. Patrick's Day party and a birthday party for Administrator Harvey Marx.

Residents Gladys Hix and Tony Ondracek put a green vest and hat on Harvey and all sang "Happy Birthday." Gladys and Tony presented him with a birthday card from all the residents. The staff Jimmy Lipiniski and Sophie Cario also presented him a gift. Six of our older employees were honored by giving them "We Care" pins. The ones being honored were Donna Holik, Margie Hall, Georgia Linderman, Delores Watson, Dorothy Lipiniski and Grace Loesch. Martha Marx had a birthday cake for Harvey which was decorated in green and white. Sophie Cario and Lydia Hortmon also brought cake.

Volunteers Lydia Hortmon, Melva Hastings, Bertha Ross and Sophie Cario served the cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon. On the same afternoon, Garland Huryta, with the Ft. Bend Humane Society, brought Magic (a dog) for Pet Therapy for the residents.

Wednesday morning, March 19th was an open hearing by the Texas Department of Health. Everyone present gave satisfactory reports.

Saturday morning, March 23rd, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Vacek entertained Mary Vacek with a birthday party. A few friends and relatives attended.

Thursday afternoon, March 27th, the residents had an Easter egg hunt in front of the home. Prize eggs were found by Minnie Schulz, Maurice Krueger, Mathilda Hartfiel, Martha Losack, Gladys Hix and Annie Simmons..

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of March were for Ida Hanka, Mary Vacek, Malcolm Tinsley, Annie Stavinoha and Martha Losack and staff members, Shawnda Jones, Harvey Marx, Esther Foston, Diane Rivers and Sally Wleczyk.

The birthday party which was held Friday, March 28th included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to favorite music. The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres. The Ruth Circle from the Methodist Church provided cakes.

Pearl Hanka brought a birthday cake for Ida Hanka to be served. Volunteer Melva Hastings helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Dear Readers, The youth club meeting was held March 23, 1986 at 2:30 p.m., with a very good attendance.

Cakes were brought to the West Rest Haven March 5th by Shirley and Celia Dobecka, Tammi and Kevin Dobecka and Willie Mae Schuetz and we will be bringing cakes April 2nd.

The youth made Easter baskets and filled them for the rest home residents March 26th; everyone enjoyed them and the visit, too.

Our Easter party was held March 23rd with a lodge meeting at 1 p.m., youth club meeting at 2:30 p.m. A youth program and egg hunt with prize eggs followed. Then supper consisting of fried chicken and trimmings was served which was delicious. The cooks did a very good job.

During the afternoon, the youth club was selling tickets on their Easter items which was their money - making project and they did real well on their sales.

March 28th was their bake sale at the Leroy Bank which was also real good.

Many thanks to everyone for donating toward the bake sale, those who also donated to our Easter project, Easter eggs for the egg hunt, and those who helped with the egg hunt.

We are going to make Mother's Day gifts, so you be sure and come every Friday to make your mother a gift.

We are now working on the scrapbook and we also need help.

At our May meeting we will have election of officers for the next year.

We need all of you to be present.

I need to know who is going to attend camp and LIT Retreat.

YAD is almost around the corner, so start working on your crafts.

The March 9, 1986 meeting of Lodge No. 29 Youth Club was called to order at 3 p.m. by Nice President Shannon Pasemann. Kim Winkler led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read.

There were 35 members, 10 adults, 1 visitor and 1 new member present.

The minutes were read and approved. Toni Blahuta gave the • treasurer's report.

For this month's social we went to the Northcross Mall in Austin Saturday, March 22nd.

Be sure if you want to go to camp to let Youth Leader Donna Steger know before May 1st. Camp will be held from July 25th to July 31st.

Our May Fete representative is going to be Jonathon Kidwell.

After the meeting we all got free sodawater and then the kids under 11 had an Easter egg hunt. Winners were Richard Haveldo, Andy Wuensche, Vern Anderson, Matthew Suchomel and Michael Hodges.

The next meeting will be April 13th at 3 p.m.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The March youth meeting of Lodge 74 was called to order at 7:45 p.m. by Sherry Michka.

Scott Listiak led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 22 members, 4 adults and 1 social member present.

We discussed the unfinished business which was a camping trip at Ratcliff Lake April 4th, 5th and 6th.

New business was about April 26th when the cloggers will perform at the First Baptist Church in Crockett.

The youth leader's report was pertaining to the June 8th Fraternal Fest in Temple.

Door prizes this month went to (Junior Division): 1st -- Ben Hyman, 2nd Keebo Hyman, 3rd -- Eric Day. (Senior Division): 1st -- Deana Crane, 2nd -- Scott Listiak, 3rd -- Jennifer West.

Our April meeting has been changed from April 20th to April 27th, due to the District III spring meeting at Lodge 92 in Fort Worth. I want to encourage all of the youth to attend this meeting.

At the April 27th meeting all the youth will need to return their camp forms. Camp will be July 21st to 24th at Camp Val Verde near McGregdr.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Nove Kvety No. 35, Elk on behalf of our entire membership, express heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother ROBERT DEAN ANDERSON, who passed away Wednesday, February 26, 1986 at his Austin home.

Graveside services were held Saturday, March 1st at Chapel Hill Memorial Park at Waco with Rev. Harry Pechacek officiating.

Robert, age 15, an honor student at Austin's Lamour High School is survived by his mother, Cynthia Anderson of Austin; father and stepmother, Harold and Sandra Anderson of Belton; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wood and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Anderson, all of Axtell; one brother, Dwayne Anderson of Belton; one half - brother, Steven Treadway, Jr. of Austin; and one step - sister, Christi Gill of Belton.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother HERMAN W. HESTER, who passed away in a Temple hospital Wednesday, March 5, 1986, at age 77.

Brother Hester was born in Heidenheimer, Texas to the late Rev. Williams Thomas Hester and Jane Emily (Mayfield) Hester. He married Olga Koctar 29 October 1931.

He retired as sergeant from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service. He had been a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He had served in the Medical Corps in numerous overseas assignments and received many awards, including the Purple Heart. He retired from Civil Service at Fort Hood after 13 years of service. For the past 5 years he had owned and operated the Hester Auto Company in Temple.

Memorial services for Herman Winfred Hester of 616 North 2nd Street, Temple, Texas were held Saturday, March 8th at 11 a.m. in the Olin E. Teague Veterans Center Chapel with Chaplain Louis Hendrick officiating.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Olga Hester; two sons, Randolph Hester of Friendswood and Donald Hester of League City; two daughters, Katherine Hillard of Temple and Shirley Jarrell of El Centro, California; two brothers, Ben Hester and Calvin Hester, both of Waco; two sisters, Alice Hayes of Waco and Callie McWhorter of Brenham; ten grandchildren and 10 great - grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Harper - Talasek Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of arrangements.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge Jan Zizka No. 18, Elgin, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister PEGGY JEAN FELFE, who, at the age of 53, passed away at an Austin hospital Wednesday, March 12, 1986.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 14, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Thorndale with Rev. Vernon M. Appel and Rev. John Ellwanger officiating. Burial was in Memorial Hill Park near Austin.

Mrs. Felfe was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Austin, the Sons of Hermann Lodge of Austin, and the SPJST Lodge No. 18 in Elgin.

She had lived in Austin for the past 35 years.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd F. Felfe of Austin; one daughter, Beth Felfe of Austin; one son, Kevin Felfe of Austin; two sisters, Mamie Beth Breeding of Perryton and Judy Vance of Waco; an aunt, Mrs. Tecie Felts of Lone Oak, Texas; her sister - in - law, Mrs. Sammy Woelfel; and mother - in - law, Mrs. Manda Felfe, both of Thorndale.

Arrangements were by Condra Funeral Home of Taylor, Texas.

Services were at 2 p.m. at the Seaton Brethren Church with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Brother Matous was born in Austin County and had lived in Bell County since the age of 2. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Seaton Brethren Church.

Survivors are his widow, Henrietta Matous of Temple; five sons, Ladis Matous of Rockdale, Gene Matous of Fort Knox, Kentucky and William Matous, Jr., Frank Matous and

Edward Matous, all of Temple; three daughters, Mrs. Harley (Henrietta) Everett of Temple, Helen Sandefur of Georgetown and Mrs. Don (Norma) Alford of Temple; one sister, Rosie Vasek of Temple; 25 grandchildren and 17 great - grandchildren.

Services were held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Martin Enderle officiating.

Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Grammier - Oberle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Brother Matulik was a native of Bell County and a Port Arthur - Groves area resident since 1925. He retired from Gulf States Utilities where he worked as a line man with 38 years of service. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ushers Society and Knights of Columbus No. 3491.

Survivors include his wife, Anna P. Matulik; son, Ray W. Matulik, Jr. of Denver, Colorado; three daughters, Margaret Hebert of Groves, Gloria Bullion and Georgia Quisenberry, both of Port Arthur; one sister, Olga Stepan of Waco; 12 grandchildren and 9 great - grandchildren.

Features Marek-Urbanovsky Wedding In a candlelight setting at 2 p.m.

Saturday, Connie Lynn Marek and Joseph Vincent Urbanovsky were united in marriage at St. Philip's Catholic Church. Msgr. James Brunner performed the double - ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Marek of Pierce. Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Urbanovsky, 911 Fahrenthold.

They wore combs accented with spring flowers and carried nosegays of Holland flowers, including peach Gerbera daisies, daffodils, freesia, yellow lilies and lavender statice.

Bridget Korenek was the flower girl.

Ring bearers were Michael and Matthew Felcman and Travis Urbanovsky, all nephews of the groom.

Philip Urbanovsky of El Campo served as his brother's best man.

Groomsmen were James Sparks of Waco; Ricky Fuller of Sugar Land; Freddy Urbanovsky of Fort Worth, brother of the groom; Al Schindler of Houston and Kenneth Krauskopf of El

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The houseparty included Jane Urbanovsky, Tresa Urbanovsky, Dianna Felcman, Waynette Fuller, Elisa Krauskopf, Linda Fuller, Shree Gordon, Daphne Dennis, Debbie Nohavitza, Cindy Cerny, Lori Fajkus, Carol Stevens, Debra Holub, Lisa Krauskopf, Anna Schindler and Dana Schindler.

After a cruise to the Bahamas, the newlyweds will reside in Cleburne, Texas.

The bride, a 1981 graduate of El Campo High School, received an associate degree from Wharton County Junior College in 1983 and a bachelor of Business Administration degree in business analysis from Texas A&M University in December 1985.

The groom is employed as an associate technician in instrument and control by Texas Utilities in Glen Rose. He graduated from El Campo High School in 1980 and received an associate degree in instrumentation from Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) at Waco in February.

The bride is a member of El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 and was active in SPJST work. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.. W.J. Luksa of Rogers, Texas and the daughter of District VI DYC Mrs. Janet Marek.

Of Czech Dancing And Costumes In 'Fate Of Fayette' History

In the sesquicentennial pagdant "Fate of Fayette," only excerpts from the authentic "National Dance" or "Beseda," as it is known were danced.

Each of the four parts represent music and dancing from different areas in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia and are blended together harmoniously. In 1848, the Czechs applied to the Austro Hungarian government for permission to gather together in their individual towns and villages to dance their traditional age - old folk dances, and they were turned down. As in their love of joyful and lively music, Czech costumes reflect bright and happy colors. The men's bowler type hats were decorated with the traditional yellow buttercups, blue scabiosa, red poppies or roses, white daisies and sprigs of wheat that are also found in the women's wreaths. In Slovakia the men also add pheasant and other bird feathers to the flowers on their hats. On special festival days, the horses are not immune from receiving many brightly colored ribbons and flowers.

Both of the dolls held by the Minarcik children, Jennifer, Melissa, and Kimberly,were from Moravia. The small doll was a gift to Helen Mikus from her cousins, the Rosta Hovazy family of Hulin. The larger doll's costume which is about 55 years old, was hand - embroidered and sewn by the same relatives who sewed Helen's costume and was a gift from her cousin, Jirinka (Mrazek) Pospechova, also of Hulin. Most of the embroidered ribbons worn by the dancers were brought back from Kromeriz by Helen Mikus on her visit in 1979, with the hope that some day the "Beseda" would again be danced in Fayette County as it had been in the mid 1800s to the mid 1960s. Kromeriz, Moravia was the seat of an Archbishop in medieval times and still has beautiful Italian style flower gardens in intricate designs around the castle, which is furnished with elaborate furniture.

A few Czechs came to Texas as early as 1836, but the larger groups of immigrants came during the 1850s as a result of the glowing accounts in the "Moray s ke Noviny" (Moravian Newspaper) by the Protestant Reverend Arnost Bergmann, a Bohemian by birth. Here in Texas, the Czechs could dance their folk dances at weddings and festivals without any government restrictions.

Beside the lively polka step, which originated in Bohemia, there are waltz steps and in the Slovak part, just a touch of Hungarian influence from the time of the Austro - Hungarian Empire occupancy. The dancers' costumes reflect the styles of Moravia and Bohemia which are similar, but with each village or town having their own distinctive designs. In certain areas of Moravia and Slovakia, costumes are still worn on special occasions and folk dancing is a popular tourist attraction.

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the *Arica, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, f, g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the Meek or caret is used for some hushing sounds. s—g, c—a, z-2, r—r As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, ch, k and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the pIt BIt sound, the sound must be spelled with a y or Sr, thusly: chytrjr kdyby (byl) kytice tjrden rytif 2adnjr hybny The soft consonants are cf, t', A, 2, g, e, f, and also c and j. USE OF CAPITAL LE LEERS: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English.

Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE-FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR-INFORMAL usage: Vy, Yam, Val: Ty, Tviij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste veera jell do mesta.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun ja, is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English). Ex., Mam eesku lenu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvime tesky. (We speak Czech).

One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.

(In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. awarded in the Czech language to different Texas colleges and high schools. Also, the Cechie Club,(now known as CEFT - Czech Education Foundation Of Texas) which lobbied very strongly and persuaded the legislature to establish a "Chair" of Slavic languages at the University of Texas in 1915. Sokol, a cultural and gymnastic association, which originated in the old country in 1862, basically to bind the Czechs together under their oppressors. Their goal "A Sound Mind In A Sound Body" reflects their work with music, folk dancing, literature and gymnastics. It is active not only in Texas but all over the United States, and Canada.

Moravia has valleys, oak trees and gently rolling hills much like Fayette County, which is why so many Czech immigrants settled in this area. The . Czechs love of good food, especially kolache and beer, lively dancing, friendly conversation and humor brought from the "old country" are still being enjoyed today in Fayette County.
