The Mistfinanka Orchestra of Czechoslovakia will be making a good will tour in the United States beginning April 19th through May 4th.

Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Minnesota are scheduled to enjoy this music of Mistrinanka beginning April 19th in Cleveland, Ohio and ending in Green Bay, Wisconsin May 4th. This will the first visit to the USA for Mistrifianka.

In Texas the orchestra is scheduled to perform for a concert and dance entertainment at two locations: In West at the West Fraternal Auditorium April 26th from 8:30 to 12:30, and in Holland at SPJST Lodge No. 80 from 2 to 6. (For more information refer to the advertisement in this issue.)

Golden Trumpet . award was won in South Bohemia by this orchestra in 1975 at Ceske Budejovice. The group of musicians performing as Mistfinanka made a successful appearance in the Hungarian film "Blood And Life."

Other competitions and honors were achieved in Germany, Austria and Brno, Strainice, Kmochfiv Kolin, Karlovy Vary, Spartakiade in Prague and wind and brass ensemble competitions.

Mistrinanka is credited with I approximately eight releases on LP and cassettes. Latest release is Krasne Chvfle which features the famous late Karel Vacek's compositions, that are favorites in USA. The orchestra plays concert/dances each year and they play music that pleases all ages and areas. The musicians are also members of radio and TV. We hope many of our members plan to attend one or both performances and give them a "Big Texas Welcome!" *** With the tornado season under way in many areas, the National Weather Service is urging people to ignore the long - accepted practice of opening windows to help equalize air pressure when a tornado approaches. For years, it was believed that this allowed the atmospheric pressure inside a house to drop along with the pressure outside, thus minimizing the chances of damage. But recent studies found that pressure on a wall opposite an open window actually increases with the arrival of a tornado. *** Many medicare patients used to stay in the hospital far longer than was necessary because the government paid the extra cost. Under a new payment system, hospitals are reimbursed based on the average amount of time a patient should spend in treatment. As a result, some people fear they will be discharged because their benefits have run out. Questions about the new system are addressed in "Knowing Your Rights: Check Out the Facts Before You Check Into the Hospital," a booklet available from the American Association of Retired Persons, Fulfillment, Health Advocacy Service, 1909 K Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20049. ***

If you'd like to save up to $300 a year on your family's grocery bill, think about switching from nationally advertised food brands to those sold under stores' own labels. Store brands can be as much as 77 percent cheaper than name brands, says the Consumer Federation of America. They cost less to develop, package, advertise and distribute, and the savings are generally passed on to the consumer. *** Summer is the peak moving season.

So, if you have the option, pack your goods and go in the spring, instead, when hauling rates are lower and dealing with truck - rental and moving companies is easier. If you wait until June or later, they may already be booked tightly. Big savings -- up to half the cost of the move -- can result if you do the job yourself. But shop carefully: The cost of renting a truck can vary widely from firm to firm.

Also, find out in advance the prices of packing materials. *** Now that interest - rate ceilings are being phased out as part of banking deregulation, many consumers are wondering whether they are getting the best deal on their current bank accounts. While bankers expect more shopping around than usual during this period, they urge consumers to compare more than just interest rates.

Take a look at the fees being charged for services, and -- perhaps most important of all -- at the services themselves.

Under the new rules, which become final March 31st, banks can pay any interest rate they like, even on small passbook accounts. But rates are not likely to rise much for small sums. And many will charge higher fees for small accounts. "You could lose more in fees than you gain in higher interest," says an out - of - state banker. His advice: Pick up the service - charge brochures at two or three banks and compare the fees as well as the new rates being offered.

One thing you want to be very certain about is the safety of your deposits. Is the institution insured by a federal or state agency? Or is it covered by private insurance? Federal insurance is the safest. Also, if your deposits contain more than $100,000 -the maximum protected by federal insurance for each account -- you will want to work out a strategy to make sure the entire amount is covered.

Once you have decided where to maintain your account, the best way to get good service is to develop a working relationship with officials at your bank. At small banks, some new customers demand to meet the president before they agree to open an account. This can be a useful strategy.

For customers of large banks, the best official to know is usually the manager of the branch where you do most of your business. Once your branch manager begins to trust you, he or she can sometimes skirt ordinary bank policy. The, holds placed on checks -- usually 7 to 15 days -- can sometimes be eliminated. Overdraft fees can be waived. *IC* If you are separately billed for utilities in your apartment, you can cut your heating costs while keeping the place comfortable by taking a few simple steps. Caulk and weatherstrip around windows and doors and keep the thermostat at or below 68 degrees Fahrenheit durin g the day and at 60 or lower at night. SPJST To Sponsor Fraternal Fest Dear Members: June 8th a special event will take place. This event will be the Fraternal Fest sponsored by the SPJST. This sesquicentennial celebration will provide a common time for all our members to come together to celebrate this special time in our state's history.

In keeping with the fraternal tradition of the SPJST this celebration has been designed to be a festival for the entire family, featuring activities for all ages and all cultural backgrounds within our organization.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Activities Dear Readers: The March meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek; all officers were present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the flagbearers.

Carol Chervenka read the minutes of our last meeting; also several notes were read. Good reports were given by the committee chairmen.

New member elected to the lodge was Dawn Andel. We hope you can come by soon.

Remember the photo contest; the theme is "Volunteerism: Joining Hands To Touch Lives." Deadline is May 1, 1986; for more information contact your local lodge president and read the Vestnik.

June 8th, a Sesquicentennial Celebration will be held at the Frank

Wednesday, March 26, 1986—VESTNfK/5 Mayborn Center in Temple. Brother Leonard Mikeska said the celebration will be a big event. Several shows and displays will be going on all day. The Civic Center will have several programs scheduled. Let's try to attend because it will be a great celebration.

The youth club will have a fund raising dinner April 27th; dinner will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; the plate will be $3.50 for one half barbecued chicken and trimmings; a cake and punch reception will be held for the 50 - year members that afternoon; the ceremony honoring these people will begin at 1:30 p.m., then followed by the reception.

Everyone is asked to come out and support the youth club, and help us honor the 50 - year members and the 96th birthday celebrant. A representative of the Supreme Lodge will be presenting the pins.

The meeting was adjourned. Our next meeting will be April 9th at 7:30 p.m.

25, Ennis Makes Contribution Lodge

Dear Members: The meeting of March 13, 1986 was called to order by President Johnnie I. Krajca. A moment of silence was held in memory of departed members, Brothers Louis J. Kudrna and Willie H. Hrabina.

Additional insurance acquired by James Trojacek by Sales Representative Ernest Haskovec.

A $25 donation was made to the March of Dimes.

Work on the enlargment of the stage has been started.

Membership voted to rent the hall to the City of Ennis Parks and Recreation Committee for Ladies' Exercise Classes Tuesday and Thursday nights during the summer months.

Membership voted . to give an easement for a sewer line to the Church of God, who are planning to build on the adjoining lot.

Upcoming dances announced as follows: March 22 -- The Creek March 29 -- Battle Dance, Lone Star Czechs and Eddie Ray Polka Dots The next meeting will be Thursday, April 10, 1986.

29, Taylor Makes Donation

Lodge

Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, March 9th at 4 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by everyone present.

Roll call of officers showed all were present.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read. The Property Committee's and treasurer's reports were given.

Correspondence was read. We had a letter from the Heart Association. A motion was made that we donate $25.

New members accepted into our lodge are Ronald William Knash, Kate Elizabeth Gaydos, Dorothy Lee Kurecka, Darla Ann Leppin and Todd Oscar Leppin.

Youth Club Leader Donna Steger reported that 35 members were at their meeting. She reminded everyone about the District H spring meeting at SPJST Lodge 18 in Elgin.

May Fete representative will be Johnathan Kidwell.

An applause of appreciation was given to Albin Machu and his wife, Elaine, who won second place in state in insurance sales. They won a trip to the Bahamas.

A motion was made to raise our annual dues to $3 to help pay for the insurance.

Our annual May Fete will be held Sunday, May 4th. We had election of May Fete Queen; Sandra Mikulencak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Mikulencak, was elected May Fete Queen. Shelly Machu, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albin Machu, was elected SPJST Queen. Rochelle Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hall, will be the princess to the May Fete Queen and Amy Smith will be the princess to the SPJST Queen.

We also will have a barbecue dinner; plates will sell for $4 a plate. We plan to have a cake walk and country store.

Members are asked to bring something for our country store at our next meeting.

Door prizes were won by Albin Machu, Danny Mikulencak and John, Albers.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, April 13th at 4 p.m.

35, Elk March Meeting

SPJST Lodge 35 held their monthly meeting March 9, 1986. President Henry Breitkreutz called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. with 40 members present.

Minutes of our February meeting were read by Rosemary Banik and approved as read.

Sister Rosemary Banik read us a letter from the Supreme Lodge. They are planning a Fraternal Fest June 8, 1986 at Temple, Texas to help celebrate the Texas Sesquicentennial.

Music will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Our youth club plans on selling refreshments. All over age 16 is $5 and all others are free. All monies will be donated to the Protective Services for Abused Children. Hopefully, our lodge will be well represented.

Our youth club report was given by Louise Burney. She announced a kite flying contest after the meeting with Vernon Dulock, Erwin Dieterich and Sonny Pavelka as judges. They had a very breezy day and I'm sure by now some of the kites could be in Dallas.

Highest flying was won by Waylon Callaway and Stephanie Callaway.

Most creative went to Jessica Tierce.

Most troublesome went to the other 8 flyers. Great fun was had by all including the judges.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Ruby Pavelka, Sheena Pavelka, Dawn Pavelka and Brook Dulock.

March 23rd the youth club will hold an Easter egg hunt at Mart Park at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all are asked to bring cookies and colored eggs.

Our youth club made a visit with their Valentine cookies to the Mart Nursing Home. Great fun was had by all, young and old alike, with many thanks, hugs and kisses.

A new member, Christopher Gene Pavelka, was given a welcome.

We voted to donate the hall April 18th to the McLennan County Coop School. There will be a benefit dance with music played by Cherokee Rose.

Door prizes were won by Vernon Dulock, adult; Melissa Burney, youth.

49 To Participate In Ethnic Festival Lodge

The Rowena SPJST Lodge 49 will have a kolache booth at the Ethnic Culture Festival in Ballinger April 19th and 20th, again. We have been doing this for several years. We will sell our delicious homemade kolache and coffee both days. We usually sell around 200 dozen kolache.

We will start baking kolache the week of March 24th, and we do need lots of help, so members please call the following phone numbers for exact days of baking: 442 - 2001 or 442 3672. No one will get a special invitation; just be nice and do come work.

We had a very good turnout at the Eola, Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train Day. We sold lots and lots of kolache there, along with delicious country sausage and sauerkraut sandwiches. Thank you to everyone who worked at all these things and helped us make this event a big success. It was work but also lots of fun.

To Perform At Lodge 80, Holland Dear Members and Friends: The Mistrinanka Orchestra (a group of 25) from Czechoslovakia is going to play at the SPJST Lodge 80 in Holland on Sunday, April 27th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission will be $10 per person. The kitchen will also be open from 2 to 6 p.m.

Czech Heritage, Inc. of Forestville, Wisconsin has arranged Mistrinanka Orchestra's tour for 1986 and was also sponsor of Budvarka Orchestra's 1984 tour in USA. The Mistriiianka is also scheduled to perform in West at the West Fraternal Auditorium on April 26th.

For those of you who have never been to SPJST Lodge 80, I am including directions of the location; traveling north on Hwy. 95 from Taylor follow Hwy. 95 until you get to FM 2268 (near Holland) and turn right and go east approximately one - half mile or so and the lodge home is on FM 2268, or those of you who will be traveling south on Hwy. 95 as soon as you pass through Holland, look for FM 2268 (about one - half mile from Holland), turn left and proceed until you get to Lodge 80.

I would like to mention some of the history about Mistfinanka. There are

several areas in Czechoslovakia where the folk art still is in full life. The strongest folklore tradition can be found in the south of Moravia, in the area called Moravian Slovakia.

Most beautiful girls' and boys' costumes with rich embroideries and ornaments and also songs with unique melodies and rhythm sung and played with virtuosity of true artists, all of these are the main attractions of the Mistfthanka wind band which is at present considered the most important representative of the region and ranks among the best wind ensembles in Czechoslovakia.

Mistfifianka originated in 1967 on the initiative of the present leader Antonin Pavlu§ and its basic members were young graduates from the youth orchestra of Josef FrYbort from Kyjov. Under the baton of this prominent and famous teacher of music and conductor the Mistritianka wind band gained the right of participation in the contest of the Golden Bugle - horn in Ceske Budejovice. In 1975 Mistfinanka became the absolute winner of the competition and thus the best wind ensemble in Czechoslovakia. More than 150 concerts every year, dozens of successful radio recordings, permanent collaboration with the Czechoslovak Television on the most attractive programs (the series Zpiva cela rodina -- The whole family sings, V gichni se ptaji, komu to hraji -- Everyone asks to whom it is played, Sejdeme se na Vlachovce -- We shall meet at Vlachovka, New Year Eve programs, etc.), the Supraphon LP record which was rapidly sold out and its re edition, a cassette and a new LP record with songs by the band's principal composer Blahoslav Smi govskST, all these facts testify to the vast popularity of the ensemble.

Unusual successes were achieved by Mistfinanka at the festivals of Stranice, 1Cmochilv Kohn, at Dolrii Lomna, in Karlovy Vary and on. the occasion of the Spartakiade gymnastics performances in Prague, as well as at the international wind music competition of the Federal Republic of Germany on 6 January 1981, •at Brno.

Mistrinanka made a successful appearance in the Hungarian film "Blood And Life."

Mistfinanka is well - known to lovers of the Czech wind music abroad; it has taken part in the 17th folklore festival in Suhl, GDR, where it won the golden medal, in the folklore festival at Lackenbach, Austria, where they enjoyed the favor of both the listeners and critique and received invitation to more performances. They were realized in 1979 when Mistffilanka played at Hartkirchen, Kremsmfmster and other places. Mistfinanka's performances are required by foreign supporters of the Czech wind music who have invited it to Westberlin, Stuttgart and its surroundings and to more tours of Austria.

The Mistfiiianka wind band follows, as one of the first bands in Czechoslovakia, the old tradition of masters -- folk musicians -- adding to it the quality of the original and stylized form of the South Moravian folklore in their interpretation. Their programs include the original songs and music which accompany the South Moravian folk at all life events from spring to autumn and from cradle to old age.

Mistrinanka playa with virtuosity also songs composed by earlier and contemporary composers who draw from the region's folk tradition.

Dear Members: Our March 10th meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek at 6:30 p.m.

Lydia Faler led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A minute of silent tribute was paid to Elsie Sikora; may she rest in peace.

President Matcek thanked everyone for coming out and working at the chili supper. He also thanked Vlasta Nowotny for the beautiful Valentine she baked andtonated for the project.

All officers were present and all reports were accepted as read.

We were honored with the presence of our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his lovely family, also District V Director Jerry Prochazka and his wife. We enjoyed your company and would like to have you come, again.

It was reported that Wesley Joe Werner has been in the hospital, but is out and on the road to recovery.

Our April 13th meeting will honor our 50 - year members.

Lunch will be served at 12:00 p.m. and the meeting will start at 2 p.m.

The ladies are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert.

88, Houston News

On Friday, April 4th, a new orchestra will play in our ballroom.

Phil Grey and his orchestra will play the music of the big band era. Tickets are priced at $8.50 each and it will be a dress - code dance.

The "Renegade" plays Saturday evening, March 29th. This is a country/western band and they also play some light rock. Saturday, April 5th "Bobby Jones" comes to the Chandelier Ballroom. This band plays polkas, waltzes and a good variety of music.

Homer Alexander accepted a commendation from the Texas Department of Human Resoures for exceptional volunteer service from members of Lodge 88. He and his committee are responsible for most of the services to several organizations where our help was needed. Thanks to Homer and his committee, Lodge 88, again, has received some good publicity.

Chairman of the Blue Room, Willie Wehring, with Ray Hagan and Nat Gonzales, have announced the first Blue Room party of this year. Sunday, April 27th Henry Tannenberger will play and a delicious dinner will be served. Tickets will be sold only in the office and table reservations will be made for six tickets or more. Tickets

are still $10 each. This includes the dance, the dinner and cocktails starting at 4 p.m. More information concerning this Blue Room party will come in later letters.

Doris and Henry Knapick are back from a relaxing cruise down the coast of Southern California and Mexico.

They boarded the M.S. Noordam in San Francisco and flew home from Acapulco after stopping at Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.

Lodge 88 Sales Representatives Helen Hegwood and Della Kadlecek won trips to the Bahamas. Tuesday, February 18th, the ladies, along with Amos and King, left early for a three day trip to DisneyWorld, Epcot, and SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida. They then journeyed to Port Canaveral to board the S.S. Royal and meet the other cruise winners. Vice President Bernie Gebala and wife Evelyn and Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and wife Betty served as hosts for the trip.

The 40 participants were winners and their spouses of the contest for selling SPJST Life Insurance for 1985. I'm so glad that the home office is taking this way to award the top salespeople.

They work very hard and deserve this kind of recognition for a job well done. Due to the Houston economy, our sales representatives need a lot of help for 1986. If you know anyone needing insurance, please call one of the sales people. They are listed in the committee book compiled this year by First Vice President Marceil Malak.

I've decided to do a short series on the elected officers of Lodge 88. I'm interested in this kind of information and I hope you will be also. The first in the series of "Know Your Elected Officers" is naturally our president.

Jerome John Ermis was born September 18th to Willie and Lillie Ermis in the small farming community of Velehrad near Schulenburg, Texas.

Jerry has one brother, George, and one sister, Sylvia. His sister Estella is *ceased. Jerry married Willie Mae Bankston September 18, 1955 in Houston. They have one son Gary who graduated from the University of Houston and is now working as an accountant in Houston. Jerry went through high school in Velehrad and in 1942 joined the Army Medical Corps and served at Camp House, Gainesville, Texas for 31/2 years. After his discharge from the service, Jerry had several jobs in the sales field and January 18th of this year, he retired from Hilsher Home Supply after thirty years and sixteen days of service. His SPJST involvement has been long and steady. Jerry joined in April 1946 and served as guide for the next six years.

He became treasurer and served for twenty - one yeariTHe was elected as our president in 1977 and also for 1978 and 79. He was on the Auditing Committee in 1980 and on the Board of Trustees in 1981 and 1982. Jerry was elected president in 1984, 1985 and 1986 again. He hasn't had much time to devote to hobbies other than getting away to the home farm and a little gardening. Willie Mae, Jerry's ever helpful wife, joined Lodge 88 in 1955.

She retired from Montgomery Ward the end of December 1985. Son Gary joined in 1959 so the Ermis family is 100 percent SPJST. Knowing Jerry, he wouldn't have it any other way.

139, Danbury Donates $200

The March meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 was called to order by President Vincent Hechler. After Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the last meeting, he read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Lesikar commending the lodge for its donation to the Sonny Best Lukemia Fund.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp gave her report and also reported that, since the last meeting, the lodge had lost three members by death. Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave the financial report.

Sister Linda Piper, representing the Skrabanek Park Improvement Committee, asked the lodge to make a contribution to the Park Fund. The members voted to give a $200 donation.

Members also voted to buy a half page ad in the State Fair Czech Day Sesquicentennial Book.

A social was held after the business meeting adjourned.

Houston Lodge 142 March Meeting

New member for February was Raymond Budewig signed up by Sales Representative Sidon Tumis. Two additional insurance policies were taken on Curtis Kieschnick and Keith Kieschnick handled by Robert ICieschnick.

Brother Raymond Budewig and wife, Shirley, were present at this meeting. We are happy to report that Brother Raymond Budewig is our new sales representative for Lodge No. 142; he is very well - qualified and will be a great asset to our lodge. We wish to welcome Brother Raymond Budewig.

We also were very happy to have District V Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt at our meeting. She spoke and gave us some very informative information.

Youngest member prize of $5 at this meeting went to Kim Patke.

Door prizes went to Frances Barrett, Lillie Valka, Joyce Molenowsky and Curtis Kieschnick.

Correspondence was received from the March of Dimes and Lodge 18, Elgin.

James and Paul Mercer were voted in as new members and also, from the February meeting, Billy Ray Stewart.

Youth Club Leader Anne Tomastik reported, five members and two guests.

Spring break in Academy was this hence the low attendance. week, Sunshine Member Libbie Bartek sent a get well card to Rita Forney.

All chairpersons' reports were given and showed improvement over last year.

Harry Barber is striping the parking lot and has two willing helpers, Jessie Barber and Pat Tomastik.

The Rules & Regulations Committee will meet in two weeks.

Motion was made and seconded to send the usual $50 to the March of Dimes from Bingo Fund.

Helen Bland will continue to help for a while until everything is running smoothly.

No old business was brought forward. , In new business, a new Food Committee was appointed. They are Amanda Quade, Elgene Eckermann, Doris Eckermann and Lydia Quade.

Also in new business, Lee Leonhardt made a motion that Lodge 179 would donate $25 to the Local County Jr. Livestock Show. This motion was seconded by Mrs. Peters and all . members were in favor of it.

The meeting was adjourned followed by a fried fish meal with · trimmings and desserts. · Next meeting is set for April 10th at 7:30 p.m. in Warrenton, Texas.

COMMENTARY Lodge 179 in Warrenton, Texas is a fun place to be every second Thursday of the month. We have normally hot meals, plenty of refreshments and a whole lot of fun and good fellowship, so why don't we have more participation from all our members; also, at least once a year, we try to get as many members as possible and go on a trip. We have been to places like the Prison Rodeo in Huntsville, Gavleston Beach, Texas Rennisiance Festival, Ice Capades in Austin and other fun places. Being a member myself for 10 years, I cannot see why more members cannot be present. If there is a problem as to our meeting times or dates, then your opinion would be heard if you are present. The times and dates are not set by anyone person, but are voted on by a majority vote. I personally feel that the SP JST is a No. I quality insurance group, as well, as the fine group that we have at Lodge No. 179. All members are friendly, caring, and good - abiding citizens.

We just want your

participation.

Please abide by my request and I urge all members and guests to attend our meetings once a month; time and -dates are in the Vestnik.

You may be surprised by the fun and good fellowship that you could endure. I would . also like to urge parents with children attend. Our youth club is not at all like it was in previous years. I understand that a lot of our youth have already become adults. But, hopefully, along with everyone's help and help from our sales representatives, we can once again regain our youth. Thank you for your time and, hopefully, everyone will' try and attend more meetings.

Lodge 183 To Meet Dear Members: Monday, March 10th, the lodge had its monthly meeting with 30 members present, and we need to give Lambert Pustejovsky a hand for calling the members and reminding them there would be a meeting. Lambert had cooked a pot of stew, while other members brought the usual trimmings and there was a very good meal before the. 'meeting. It was a very good meeting with all the reports read and approved. The big discussion was how to raise money for a new hardwood floor. for dancing, and some of the money has already been raised, so our members need to .come to the next meeting to hear about the project.

Chit next meeting will be Monday, Apríl 14th at 7 p.m., come a little earlier for the meal, Lambert told us that there will be barbecue brisket for the next meeting so those of you who attended this meeting and all of you who have not been to one of the lodge meetings, you need to mark your calendar and be there for that meeting.

At this meeting Dorothy Adamek won the $30 door prize and Bennie Mae Pustejovsky won the second prize gift; members, you can see what you are missing by not attending your local lodge meetings. The more members at meetings, the more fun they become and you too will find out that there are more members helping to make things happen at Lodge 183 in Arlington.

The members of Lodge 183 would like to give one of our members a big hand and that is. Jon Pullin who is the owner of PFI Metal Fabrication, specializing in welding steel and alloys.

Jon made the metal frame around the sign in front of the lodge building and also the frames around the air conditioners to keep people from running their cars into them and denting them. So you see Jon is one of the members who has made things happen at the lodge. We were told, at the meeting, that Darlene Roznovsky was honored by the Irving Independent School District when they chose her logo for the official logo to be used on all publications and stationery. Darlene has also drawn posters and signs for the dances; members, you can see that

some of-our young members also can' make things happen at Lodge 1~3!

Have you heard about the officer watching a man pacing in front of a house at 3 a.m., walks over and asks him what he is doing. The gentleman answered: "I forgot my key, officer, and I'm waiting for my children to come home and let me in."

Lodge 191, East Texas Activities We had our dance February 22nd and it was a big success. The Night Riders Band played and everyone had a real good time. At intermission, Diane Sikes and Laura (Cricket) Page gave us a real neat precision clogging dance number. Everyone enjoyed that.

Folks, Lodge 191 has been a very busy place this year with our regular dances, country/western dance lessons, clogging lessons, square dance lessons and now Latin lessons and regular Pine Square Club dances. Our lodge doors seem to be open practically every day of the week and our activities seem to get better and better.

March 8th, we had our dance and folks it was BIG. The Kountry Kickers Band played to a full house. Needless to say, they were outstanding and have been invited to come back in April. At intermission, three of our SPJST youth members entertained us with a dance number. Misty Daniels, Dean and Shelley Boyd -- you kids did great and we thank you.

The March 22nd dance (which will be in the past when this letter will be published) was dancing to the Eddie Thompson's disc jockey music.

Everyone enjoyed him last month, so .we hope you will enjoy him again.

Work days! Work days! and what a difference they make. We have made considerable changes as you come in to our lodge and all to everyone's delight.

We had our lodge meeting the Llth and our Vice President John Anderson made acknowledgements to all people who have contributed their time to our work days and to all who have donated material to make it all possible. Special thanks this week to Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Hughes, who donated a popcorn machine which already made a bundle this last dance. Thanks, again! And thanks to the ladies for their delightful breakfast Saturday morning.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order March 5th with 34 members present and guests Micki Peters, Millie Kubala and Marie Selman. Our 91 - year - old member, Mrs. Millie Walker, will donate another handmade quilt to the club to be given away at a later date, along with a wooden reindeer donated by Maria Prill.

Additional information should be forthcoming in the newspapers and radio programs.

Circle Of Czech Women Report On a very beautiful day, a very nice turnout, and many guests attended our May 6th meeting. It was called to order

by President Zvolanek.

Guests this month were Julius Podhrasky, Adolph Salac, Frank Noska, John Trojacek, Phil Reames, Gilbert Kalich, Alvin Elsik, Bob Zvolanek and Arnold Vrla.

Greetings were relayed from Sisters Ella Bartos, Mary Nesuda, Lillian Graeser and Mary Kubacak.

Secretary Alice Roberts' and Treasurer Vicki Kohn's reports were read and approved.

Correspondence Secretary Helen Vrla, Jr. read thank you notes from Liddie Pavelka, and St. Cecelia Catholic Church.

Correspondence also was received, from Volunteer Center.

Donations were as follows: In memory of George Skotak by his wife, Sidney.

In memory of Christine Zemanek by Millie Noska.

Sister Fitz donation was toward stamps.

Libby Slovak donated Easter cards.

Birthday Card Chairman Bessie Kalich mailed six cards for March.

Czech Cultural and Fraternal Council meetings were announced by Sister Bessie Reames.

Evelyn Salac announced the 76th anniversary of SPJST Lodge No. 84.

Bertha Podhrasky announced there will be a band from Czechoslovakia playing at the West Fraternal Auditorium, April 26th.

Other announcements were that Anna Brown, Martha Kocian, Agnes Finch and Justine Pokladnik were on the sick list.

Lydia Dirkx was in Florida visiting her ill brother.

Florence Perresynni announced the marriage of her daughter.

Sister Rose Kopecek stated that since this being the Sesquicentennial year, our officers should serve again.

Bessie Reames moved that we keep the same officers. Everyone agreed to serve and motion was seconded and approved.

Any money our Circle makes from the sale of ads for the Souvenir Book will go toward the museum project.

Car bumper stickers were available to purchase advertising the Sesquicentennial (in Czech).

Flowers for our tables were brought

"Happy Birthday" was sung for our March celebrants.

We voted to take pictures of our Circle members at our June meeting.

—SPJSTPermanent Chair Of Czech Language & Culture To Be Established

Interested representatives of the various Czech organizations and clubs in Texas met at the Supreme Lodge SPJST in Temple recently. Dean Robert King, Department Head Dr. Michael Katy and Instructor Woody Smith from the University of Texas and Dean Daniel Fallon and Dr. Clinton Machann of Texas A&M University talked to the group about the creation of a permanent chair of the Czech language and culture. Both universities are interested in sponsoring the program.

The purpose for establishing such a chair is that any person or group wishing to study the Czech language and culture now or fifty years or more from now could request it at the endowed university and it would be guaranteed to be offered and taught by an outstanding professor.

Plans call for raising an amount of $500,000 which will be matched by the selected university. The Foundation is chartered by the State of Texas and is a non - profit organization whose purpose is the continuation of Czech education and culture. The Foundation hopes that everyone of Czech ancestry can support this important project. Of the early donations, many have been received from people who are not Czech and this support is encouraging.

Minutes Of The CEFT Meeting March 1, 1986 Temple, Texas A meeting of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) was called to order by President J.J. Skrivanek following a public meeting called for the purpose of establishing a "Chair" for Czech Studies at a major Texas University which was attended by thirty - three individuals interested in preserving our ancestral culture, heritage and language through education. The purpose of the Foundation's meeting was to revitalize the Foundation and organize the Fund Drive for the Chair.

The meeting was attended by four of the original directors: Professor J.J. Skrivanek, Mr. Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik, Mr. Tim Kostom and Mr. Rudy Sefcik; and the following interested individuals: Albert Blaha, Calvin

Chervenka, Louis Hanus, Marvin Marek, Sharon Skrivanek Clark and Victor Peter.

The existing officers and directors voted to expand the directorship to all individuals in attendance and asked everyone to propose additional Czech Americans for the position at the next meeting of the Foundation.

It was decided the president should continue to serve as the treasurer. Sid Pokladnik and Marvin Marek were respectively chosen to serve as vice president and secretary. Albert Blaha was chosen to head the Publicity Committee.

Stationary was a subject of discussion and the directors concluded new stationary should be printed since a majority of the directors listed on the present letterhead were deceased. The decision regarding the format of the new stationary was left to the discretion of the president and the secretary.

Mr. Louis Hanus questioned the procedures that must be employed to satisfy IRS requirements for donations or contributions to the Chair Fund Drive. The members suggested legal or CPA counsel be sought to address all the relevant tax questions.

Sharon Skrivanek Clark, the daughter of the late Dr. John M. Skrivanek, PHD, was asked to also serve as a director of the Foundation but respectfully -declined because of other obligations.

Marvin Marek agreed to prepare a form, with Albert Blaha's assistance, to be used for individuals who might wish to make a donation pledge which could be paid in installments.

Mr. Pokladnik expressed the opinion, and the directors agreed, that each contribution to the Chair. Fund should be acknowledged by the secretary by letter.

Mr. Sefcik nominated Mr. Vaculik, editor of Hospodar, to serve as the Czech newspaper publicist for the Fund Drive since Mr. Vaculik demonstrated his interest in the effort by attending the public meeting held earlier in the afternoon. The directors unanimously agreed by confirming the nomination.

Mr. Pokladnik asked all the directors to offer additional interested individuals for nomination to the Foundation's Board of Directors and suggested we plan to meet again, as soon as possible, to take advantage of the Sesquicentennial Year and all the special activities.

The next meeting was scheduled for 1:00 p .m . , Saturday, April 5, 1986, at the Surrey Inn in Caldwell, Texas.

Executive Committee Meeting CESAT

The Executive Committee of CESAT (Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas) will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 1986 at the SPJST Lodge Hall in Taylor, Texas.

All Executive Committee members are urged to be present for discussion regarding CESAT activities in the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial year.

Following the Executive Committee meeting, the Texas Council for Higher Education (Texaska Matice vy§k"ho vzdelani) will review the status of the student loan and scholarship program.

Society Of Texas To Meet In Corpus Christi

Mrs. Marjorie Matula, president of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, wishes to inform members of the society that there will be a meeting April 12th at 10:30 a.m. in Room 221 of the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

This will be a complete meeting that will not last more than an hour. There will be several important items on the agenda.

From The State Youth Director April Meeting Suggestions Dear Youth Leaders: Enclosed are the meeting suggestions for April. I've selected games to play out of doors, since Spring has sprung and the weather should be good and inviting.

The craft would be appropriate to give to mothers on Mother's Day. It is very inexpensive and each child can decorate the planter to suit his/her own taste. A live blooming plant would make the planter extra special as a gift for moms.

A few reminders concerning future events/activities May 1 - 15 -- Deadline to turn in camp application/qualification form.

May Meeting -- Election of Youth Club officers for next year.

Installation of Youth Club officers.

May 5 -- Deadline for LIT to register for retreat.

The LIT Retreat is new this year.

This is a special opportunity for active youth club members 15 and older to receive training to help at camp. This will be for teens from across the state to come together and have a good time and learn some leadership skills. I am depending on you to encourage your young people to attend. The youth attending this event should be qualified to attend camp and be committed to serving as an LIT. They will be assigned to a group and will help their group all day long and sometimes part of the evening. Some LITs may help in crafts, games, archery, etc. The youth need to understand that this is an important and responsible position and that we depend on them to do their best. An LIT will participate in all the camp activities with their group of campers.

They will get to swim, go horseback riding, do crafts, etc.

You may have a teen who wants to serve as an LIT but who has not been active this year and is not qualified to attend camp. If you feel that this youth is responsible and would make a good LIT then please recommend that youth to your DYC. The two of you can then decide if that teen should attend the retreat. It is our goal to have all those teens who want to serve as an LIT to attend the retreat. I would like to stress that even though a teen is not able to attend the retreat, they may still serve as an LIT at camp by submitting their application by the May deadline. The DYC in each district will be coordinating transportation for the teens to Val Verde.

We all plan to make this such a fun and exciting event for the teens that they will beg to come back next year.

Please contact me or your DYC if you have any questions concerning this LIT retreat.

Fraternally, Sue Meadows, SYD *** DRAGON AND SPIDER The entire group, with the excepton of one person, lines up in a single file, representing a dragon. Each person holds on to the waist of the person in front of him. The entire line works as one ferocious dragon to ensnare the "spider," who is the lone individual

not in the line. Designate boundaries with trees, houses or landmarks. To catch the spider, the head and tail of the line must surround and enclose him in the circle. Of course the dragon should be encouraged to growl ferociously as it chases the spider.

MERRY - GO - ROUND RACE The players form a circle with at least four feet between each child.

They all face to the right. At the starting signal all start to run in a circle and each tries to pass the runner in front of him, tagging him as he goes by.

Any player tagged by a runner coming from behind must drop out of the race. The last player in the circle is the winner. Any time the starting signal is given, the circle turns around and races in the opposite direction.

Variation: Do on roller skates or on one foot or crawling backwards.

NEWSPAPER TAG One player is chosen to be it and another to be the runner. The runner is given an old rolled up newspaper, fastened with a string or rubber band.

At the signal "it" starts to chase the runner, who tries to get to another

player and hand him the newspaper.

Only a player holding the newspaper may be tagged and when the runner tries to hand the paper to a child, that child must take it.

The newspaper cannot be thrown.

Any player tagged while holding the newspaper becomes "it." If the newspaper is dropped and "it" picks it up, the player who dropped the paper is it for the next game.

CLOTHESPIN PLANTER Materials Needed: Large empty and clean tuna can; several clothespins per person, tacky glue, acrylic paint or permanent markers, ribbon.

How To Do: 1. Wash tuna can and dry.

2. Apply glue to both rim and inner edge of can. Slip clothespins down all around can edge. A little extra glue inside where clothespins touch will help make the container stronger. Let glue dry completely.

3. Decorate the planter using permanent magic marker or acrylic paint. Add a ribbon bow.

4. Fill planter with a potted live plant or a silk/plastic flower arrangement.

Youth Club Had Guest Speaker Bryan

Dear Readers, Lodge 39 Youth Club held its monthly meeting Sunday, March 9th.

Everyone was present, including one visitor.

We had a guest speaker from the Department of Human Resources to talk to us about Child Abuse. The information he gave us was very disturbing about the abuse some children go through. We will see where we can help some of these kids and make this our charity project.

Lodge 30, Taiton YC Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Attends District To Host District III Meeting Meeting The District VI meeting was held Hi! We are very busy getting ready for District III meeting at our lodge April 20th. We also are working on YAD projects for June 29th at our Lodge No. 92.

We had our Easter egg hunt Sunday, March 9th after the lodge meeting. We had three age groups; the ones finding prize eggs were: (5 years and under) -- Cindy Jones and Paxton Davies (6 years to 10 years) -- John Eric Paprskar and Melissa Hubenak (11 years to 16 years) -- Mary Krivanek and Holly Hubenak We had an egg (beer) hunt for the adults. Everyone had a great time; the prize egg (can of beer) was found by Sister Clara Cohen.

Dear Vestnik Readers, This month has been a very busy and fun month. Our youth meeting was held March 2nd. There were 15 members and one guest, Shannon Pechal, present.

March 14th, we had a fund - raising project. We had a chili supper and auction. We made a lot of money. It was fun. The chili that Mr. and Mrs. Kohutek prepared was delicious. We had so many nice things at the auction.

It was so much fun. I kept bidding on a record player and, finally, got it.

Thank you to everyone who came to eat, donated prizes, and bought things at the auction.

We are planning a trip for the summer. I hope we can go to a fun place something like "Wet and Wild." I went with my grandma and grandpa Klusacek to the Distict II meeting in Elgin. I had a very good time. My cousin Tracy and I sang a motion song, "A Boy and A Girl In a Little Canoe." It was fun. I hope everyone liked it.

Our next meeting will be April 6th.

We will have an Easter egg hunt, so, everyone be sure and come and bring your Easter basket.

Miss Tierce is pictured with the trophies she has won in area races recently. She received a first last summer in a one - mile YMCA run, a first medallion in the General Tire one - mile run in October, and a third place for the Providence one - mile Fun Run in November.

The meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar. Valerie Roye led the Pledge of Allegiance and Michelle Srubar recited a prayer.

After the meeting was adjourned we had an Easter egg hunt. The surprise eggs were found by Craig Dorotik and Crystal Roye.

Lodge 188, Centerville YC March Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, Our March meeting was held March 16th. We had 6 members and 2 adults present.

We made wreaths with plenty of flowers and lace for our craft.

We elected, as our king and queen, Brad Kornegay and Dana Dixon. Our duke and duchess will be Brent Kornegay and Jennifer Ackley.

Lisa Aghaei, Brad Kornegay and Tina Schwab went to a district meeting at the New Tabor lodge to talk about our camp activities.

New business was selling tickets on an Easter Bunny at the Saturday dances as our project. It will be given away March 29th at approximately 12 p.m. The money earned will be donated to the City Park, about to be made, for a park bench. We will donate $125. We also will earn money for the park bench by selling Easter Bunny cakes for $10. If interested, contact Evelyn Schwab.

Susan Skrabanek will visit with us at our April meeting. We will be very delighted at her visitation and will welcome her eagerly. I'll see you at our next meeting.

Sister Trojan was born in Zabcikville to the late Frank J. and Annie Zabcik Marek, who were early settlers in the East Bell County community.

She had attended school in Temple and later married Wilbert Trojan April 7, 1951. They had lived in Zabcikville for the last 30 years. Mrs. Trojan had worked as a beautician in the Temple area.

Survivors are her husband, Wilbert Trojan; two. sons, Wayne and David Trojan, Sr., both of Temple; two sisters, Mrs. Dudley Noble and Mrs. J.G. Lewis, both' of Temple; two brothers, Jodie Marek of Temple and Frank Marek of Houston and four grandchildren.

Sister Lesikar was born in Rogers and married Vinc Lesikar. They farmed in the Red Ranger community

age 65, of Terrell, formerly of Penelope, who died February 5, 1986.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. February 8 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Whitten officiating. Burial followed in Bold Springs Cemetery.

Miss Svoboda was born April 5, 1920 in Aquilla, the daughter of Frank and Agnes Svoboda. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 6 in Cottonwood for 50 years and a member of Penelope Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one brother, W.W. Svoboda of Dallas; two sisters, Mary Svoboda of Abilene and Albina Svoboda of Arlington; and several nieces and nephews.

LUDMILA [CERNOCH] ORSAK, who passed away Saturday morning, February 1, 1986 at SeymourAuthority Hospital at the age of 93 years.

Sister Ludmila Orsak was born in Czechoslovakia near Verovice 21 October 1892. She came to the United States April 1, 1911 and settled in Baylor County near Bomarton.

She married Peter Orsak in 1913 and they farmed in the Bomarton community until April 1937 when her husband died. She took over the farming until 1940 when her son - in law took over the farming but she remained busy helping with farm work, gardening and also a busy housewife.

Sister Orsak was a member of the St. John Nepomucenus Catholic Church in Bomarton, Saint Ann's Altar Society, charter member of KJZT in Bomarton, and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 77 at Bomarton since 1915.

Holy mass was celebrated at 2 p.m.

February 2nd at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in the

Ms. Roznovsky; a student in Ms. Anne Mixson's Graphic Arts IV Class, has been taken art for four years at Irving High. Ms. Mixson said, "Darlene works very well in any media, but she is especially strong in drawing and graphic design."

Two other distinctions have come to Ms. Roznovsky during this school year. She designed the 1985 Irving High School Holiday Greeting Card and was the winner of the 1985 Red Cross Youth Volunteer Poster Contest. Her future plans include majoring in art in college.

Darlene is the daughter of Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, members of Lodge No. 183, Mid - Cities at Arlington.

Z deti Jana star giho jej pfeekala vgak pouze dcera Alena (pozdej gi mantelka Mikula ge Dyma ze Stfitek) a tak Janem stargim, oslavencem tohoto elanku, vyhynul po meei rod HodejovskYch z Hodejova, sidlem na Repici.

Vedle vajieek budete potfebovat tutku, g pendliky se sklenenou hlaviekou, svieky, kahan a misku, ye ktere budete rozehfivat vosk. K tomu si koupite barvy na vajieka.

Nejprve si zkuste kresbu gpendlikovou hlaviekou na kousku papiru. Spendlik zapichnete do neorezaneho konce tufty dostateene hluboko, aby si pfi malovani neviklal. !Cada earka namalovana hlavitkou

g pendliku se bude podobat slziece. Z techto slzieek mfaete vytvofit dune ornamenty, podle pripojeneho nakresu, ei fantazie. Plechovou misku na rozpougteni vosku nebo parafinu zaveste dratem nad kahan. Jestlite jste zvladli techniku kresby slzieek na papir, mtikte se pustit do pace.

Ve vajieku opatrne udelate notilem malt' otvor na vrchlolu a spodku a pfilotenim ust k jedne dirce vyfouknete obsah do sklenieky. Pak je diikladne omyjte vlatnou vodou a otrete hadfikem namoeenYm do octa, aby skofapka nebyla mastna a gpinava a aby barvy dobre chytala. Pozor na to, aby vosk byl stale stejne horkjr. tepljr se pall, eerna, malo tepljr zase naopak rychle tuhne, droll se a, nevytvari podebne tvary.

Obarvene vajako z lazne vyjmete a osug te. Aby mohlo osychat rovnomerne ze vtech stran, nasad'te je na gpejli a odlofte do sklenice.

Dokonale oschle vajitko mime zahfejte a vosk setfete vatou. Skorapka se tim zaroveil pekne vylegti.
