In the last issue of our SPJST Vestnik the editor dwelled, rather extensively, on the importance of learning the Czech language and we hope all of our members and readers read the article about the importance of the establishment of a Czech "Chair" at one of our universities in Texas. The following is an example of, the importance of the Czech Moravian language to many of our Czech-Moravian people even out - of state.

Dear Mr. Sefcik: After fifty - one years of membership, I received on request my first issue of Vestnik last week. I am interested in improving my Czech/Moravian reading capability.

Your Lesson No. 8 was a big help to me. Could you send me copies of Lessons 1 through 7? You may send only the lessons. If there is a charge you may bill me for it.

I am a retired U.S. Department of Agriculture Research Entomologist and continue to have a callaboratOr's appointment to the Research Laboratory at Stoneville.

I have been retired since 1981 so I have about caught up on my writing. I have decided to improve my Czech/Moravian speaking, reading and writing. As a boy I spoke the language, read poorly and could not write it.

4.6,6 The Sesquicentennial activities are already in its third week of celebrating the 50th Birthday of the Texas Independence. Some we've seen were appropriate for the occasion that made you feel proud to be a Texan as well as an SPJST member. It would be educational and interesting to future generations to have a documentary film of the Czech cultural festivities within the counties where SPJST lodges were established.

Among the numerous scheduled events taking place in Czech communities and/or other Czech functions are April 12 -- Czech Heritage Day at Bayfront Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi.

May 2 to 4 -- Fort Bend County Czech Fest at Rosenberg Fair Grounds on Needville Highway.

May 3 to 4 -- 20th National Ennis Polka Festival with Sesquicentennial Celebration at SPJST Lodges 25 and 135, KC Hall and KJZT Auditorium.

June 6 to 8 -- 80th Annual Sokol Slet State Gymnastics' Championships at the Eagle Mountain Athletic Center, Fort Worth.

June 8 -- SPJST Fraternal Festival (Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration) at Frank Mayborn Convention Center, Temple.

June 23 to 25 -- RVOS State Convention, KC Hall in Temple.

June 29 -- Czech Fest at Victoria Community Center, Victoria.

July 12 to 13 -- Saints Cyril & Methodis Sesquicentennial Slavic Heritage Weekend at KC Hall on Whitney Drive in Houston.

July 31 to August 3 -- Texas Folklife Festival (Czech participation) at Hemisfair Grounds, San Antonio.

August 15 Maticka Praha (Homecoming) Celebration at Praha in Fayette County. This is one occasion that draws former area residents together more than any Czech celebration in Texas because it has kept its tradition to celebration their feast since its inception date, August 15th.

August 30 to 31 -- West fest at Longhorn Grounds, 1 mile south of West.

The month of September will be well underway with school and limited to some activities.

October 3 to 5 -- 45th Annual American - Czech Days and Sesquicentennial Celebration at State Fair and fraternal lodge homes.

(Brother Arnold Vrla, chairman of the Souvenir Program Book Committee, had information in the Vestnik pertaining to selling advertisements to help defray the expenses for the 3 - day celebration. They would appreciate your immediate response in order to get underway with compiling the project.

November 14 to 16 -- A Sesquicentennial Symposium on "Czech Music in Texas" at the Brazos Center in Bryan, will take place under the supervision of Dr. Clint Machann with Assistants Albert Blaha, Calvin Chervenka, Jerry Ostricil and Al Prochazka. We understand there will be Czech Concert Orchestras from Dallas and Houston that have committed to appear at the Symposium. Additional entertainment will consist of individual singing groups plus dance groups. Professor Skvorecky of the University of Toronto will be among the eminent speakers. It is our wish to anticipate an overwhelming participation and attendance because this will be the first "Czech Music in Texas" Symposium which should prove of interest to all Czech - Americans. ***

Most monthly mortgage payments include money for an escrow account -- a fund usually required by lenders to cover property - tax and hazard insurance payments as they become due. Lenders use the escrow account to guard their investment in homes. Find out if you are being charged correctly.

The Federal Trade Commission suggests you compare the escrow payments with what you owe annually on your hazard insurance and property taxes. You can get this information from the local tax authority and the insurance company. If the lender charges you less than the required amount, you will need to pay an additional sum at year's end. If the charge is more, it may tie up your money unfairly -- and violate federal law. ***

Lodge 47, Seaton To Honor Members Dear Members and Friends: Our last lodge meeting was held Sunday, March 2, 1986 at 2 p.m. with lodge President Jerry Pechal calling the meeting to order.

Flag Bearers Heidi Schroeder and Tracy Klusacek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held in memory of our departed lodge Sister Emilie (Pechal) Lesikar who passed away recently. May our sister rest in eternal peace and sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

Welcomed as visitors were Ann Balusek, Della Marinik, Victor Cervenka, Lonnie, Olga and Freddie Schroeder. We extend you an invitation to come again.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives and also read the minutes of the previous meeting. The correspondence was read and included letters from all Supreme Lodge officers invitations to Fraternal Fest at Mayborn Convention Center, June 8th, another Domino Tournament will be held in September and October, Universal Life Insurance information, interest is down on loans, 16 percent of the lodges are on direct billing and a "thank you" note from Robert Heese for visits, cards and prayers while he was in the VA Hospital for a heart attack in late December.

New members who chose Lodge No. 47 for their membership were Helen F. Rascoe and Darrell Bohannon. We extend you an invitation to lodge meetings as well as other lodge functions. Welcome aboard!

Those who were hospitalized during February. and that we knew about, were Brothers Jerry Trampota, Charlie Marek, John Kohut, Edwin Chlapek, Will Junek, Lester Williams and Frank Shenkir. We hope you will steadily improve and have better health from now on.

The officers all gave good reports.

The guard light has been installed and the stripping of the parking lot will be done Saturday, March 29th, when we don't have a dance at night, at 8 a.m.

Hope there will be enough members to come and help with this and some cleaning of the grounds, etc. See you there!

Chairpersons gave good reports and Adeline Kohutek, board secretary, read the minutes of their February 17th meeting to enlighten the lodge members of their deliberations.

District II spring meeting with elections of District II officers and a short program by the youth club was set for March 16th at 2 p.m. at Lodge 18, Elgin. Members were to bring salads or sweets to go with the barbecue and beans that Elgin Lodge 18 was to prepare.

The committee on the feasibility of a picnic this year had met and Chairman Nick Morris said that Sundays are either taken up by family reunions or in conflict with other SPJST lodges' functions and, later in the year, the church picnics. Therefore, the consensus of the committee was to go with a noon Tneal and a battle dance with a country band and a polka band.

After a discussion, a motion was for an afternoon dance on a Sunday and with only one band to play. The lodge membership voted to go with this route; after a band is booked, we will start advertising.

Youth Leader Rosie Craft informed the lodge membership that the chili supper is set for Friday, March 14th at 6:30 p.m. They were asking for pastry items and donations for an auction.

Under new business, we voted by two - thirds majority to set aside a new article concerning rental fee for 1986.

The Board of Trustees will have the right to reconsider the article in their next board meeting so we can book activities as before.

Birthday celebrants in March are Woodrow Marek, Adeline Kohutek, Rosie Craft, Dorothy Kohutek, Danny Kohutek and Joyce Pechal.

Wedding anniversaries for the month of March included members Dan and Helen Wiley, Albert and Patsy Koslovsky, Anton and Elizabeth Motal and Gladys Malina.

Brother Morris spoke about his observations on the meeting held the previous day at the Supreme Lodge concerning Czech Heritage and Language taught at area high schools, colleges and universities.

The winners of the door prizes were Georgie Sodek and Louis Marek.

In the next lodge meeting to be held Sunday, April 6th at 2 p.m., we will award the 50 - year pins to Brothers Albert Hejl and John Kohut and Sisters Lillie Mikulas and Ella Macek.

The lodge will furnish the meat and bread; members are to bring salads, vegetables and sweets to complete the covered dish supper to honor these longtime members and in conjunction with an Easter egg hunt for the youngsters. The honorees' families are invited to come and join in helping make this a happy day for each named.

Remember that date is Sunday, April 6, 1986 at 2 p.m. Here's hoping that all honorees are able to be present.

After the meeting adjourned, we enjoyed some good homemade chicken noodle soup, sweets, coffee and the 30 - minute free drinks. The soup was furnished by the February kitchen chairpersons, Brother Dan and Sister Ann Balusek. They were helped with cooking by Brother Willie and Sister Adeline Kohutek, Brother Frank and Sister Eleanora Spanhel, Brother Raymond and Sister Helen Bragewitz and Jerry and Dorothy Pechal.

63, Sweet Home Changes Meeting Date Lodge

Sweet Home Lodge No. 63 will hold its monthly meeting and social March 23rd at the Firemen's. Hall in Sweet Home beginning at 1:30 p.m. This is a change from our regular meeting date because of a conflict for the hall.

Various committees will be giving their reports. Attendance prizes will be awarded and someone with a birthday in January, February or March will win a birthday cake.

After the meeting, games will be played and there will be an Easter egg hunt for the little ones.

Drinks will be furnished by the lodge as usual. Everyone is asked to bring something for lunch.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 74 was held Monday night, March 10th at 7:30 p.m.

All officers and trustees were present. All reports were approved as read.

We were very happy to have our District II director, Brother Willie Kohutek and his lovely wife, Adeline, visit with us. Brother Kohutek spoke briefly to the assembly stating SPJST's new product, 'Universal Life' is really setting records. If you members haven't heard of this new insurance SPJST has to offer, call your local sales representatives and get all the information. Lovelady Lodge 74 representatives who attended the Universal Life Seminar are Creola Wilcox -- (409) 544 - 2339 and Chester Shmoldas -- (409) 544 - 8617.

Lodge 74 made a pledge to donate $200 to the Lovelady City Council toward the purchase of land for a park.

Attendance to the Saturday night socials has fallen off. We invite all the members to call a friend and meet them at Lodge 74 Saturday night.

It was nice to see Mrs. Slvenna Michka at Lovelady Lodge Saturday night. Because of her poor health, she hasn't been attending reguarly.

Lodge 80, Holland Honors Fifty-Year Member (Photo On Front Page.)

Dear Members: SPJST members of Lodge 80 met for their regular meeting Sunday, March 2. The meeting was called to order by President Bohac at 2 p.m .

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the membership present.

Roll call of officers showed all present.

Secretary Glen Latham read the minutes of the February 1986 meeting.

They were accepted as read. He also gave a report from various departments of our lodge. We, the members of Lodge 80 are very fortunate having Glen as our secretary who keeps us well - posted of the current events of our lodge, the Bingo rules and regulations, etc. Thanks, Glen, for the work you are doing.

New members accepted for our lodge are Loloynia Pacha, Dawn Pacha and Billy Joe Pacha (additional insurance).

It was decided, at the meeting to have some repairing to be done on the dance floor at the hall.

Our lodge donated $500 to the Bell County Junior Livestock Show which was held in Temple.

Frankie Pajestka, Jr. thanked the lodge for the use of the tables and equipment that was loaned to the Junior Livestock Fair.

We are planning to charter a bus to the State Fair on Czech Day. More on that later!

Brother Jerry Massar gave us some highlights of the concert and dance of the Mistrinanka Orchestra from

Czechoslovakia who will perform at SPJST Lodge No. 80 in Holland Sunday, April 27th, from 2 to 6 p.m.

We are all looking forward to hear this outstanding band. We are inviting all the people who love Czech singing and music to come to Holland SPJST Hall Sunday, April 27th. You will see the advertisement in another part of the Vestnik. Make your plans to come; they are only appearing at two halls in Texas. For ticket information refer to the advertisement.

Before adjournment of our meeting, a 50 - year pin was presented to Brother Rudy Grossman of our lodge.

Brother Joe Barabas, Jr., honorary president of Lodge 80, had the honor to present this token to Brother Grossman.

The weather in our area is windy and dry; we could use a good rain, especially the small grain -- wheat and oats. The farmers are busy planting corn and milo.

The big band sounds again come to the Chandelier Ballroom at Lodge 88.

Saturday, March 22nd, "The Jan. Garber" Orchestra under the direction of Dick Wickman will play all your favorite ballroom arrangements.

Tickets are $10 per ticket and it will be a dress - code dance. Part of the enjoyment of a dance like this is seeing how pretty everyone looks in their evening attire.

Friday, March 21st the country/western band "Renegade" will play from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. They will be back for a-Saturday dance March 29th.

Laura Warnasch is at home recuperating after her surgery. She'll be back at the lodge soon doing her share of the work at the lodge activities.

Czech Play Director Marie Kostomlatsky has postponed the date of the Czech play. She had some casting problems and felt the April date was too early to have the play ready. It has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 21st. The play "Kos to zatidi" concerns a man trying to arrange things between three girls and only two men so he makes a big mess of things.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth Lodge 172, Pasadena Receives Schedules Meeting Commendation Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by president Brother Jerry Milan. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present. All the reports were approved as read.

Youth Leader Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported the youth club really enjoyed Alice In Wonderland and then they had pizzas. She reported Ky Cleveland participated in the City Tiger Club and won first place in the division and third place overall.

Congratulations, Ky! Brother Milan read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Milan reminded us of the Easter Picnic Sunday, March 30th at the Tirk - Alholm Farm, weather permitting, at 6805 Pleasant Run Road in Colleyville on Highway 26; the First City Bank is on the left (turn left) and Burrus Grocery is on the right. It will be from 11 a.m. until?? It will be as in previous years; you furnish your food and refreshments, and one dozen colored eggs. The egg hunt is at 2 p.m., followed by a beer hunt for the men.

Games of all kinds are played.

Everyone looks forward to this, so we hope the weather will be nice.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Mark Mamula who received his PHD from the Oklahoma City University and he and his wife, Annie, moved to New Haven, Connecticut last week where he is teaching at Yale University; also to Sister Belinda Pavlicek who was wed to Mike Carter of Dallas March 7th at St. Francis Assisi in Grapevine. They are honeymooning in Paris, France and London, England. Belinda is the daughter of Brother B.W. Pavlicek, Jr. and Sister Catherine Pavlicek, the granddaughter of Sister Hattie Pavlicek and the late B.W. Pavlicek, Sr. of Seymour. May they have a long and happy life.

Our members, Brad Durham, Kelly Easton and Kelly Hill, along with several other Sokol members, arrived home safely Sunday night from Baltimore, Maryland, where they were teaching a gymnastic clinic.

Dear Members: Easter is during the month of March and comes a little early this year.

Lodge No. 172, Pasadena wishes all SPJST members a happy and holy Easter Sunday.

At this time; I want to thank all of our volunteer helpers of Lodge 172 for all the assistance of maintaining our lodge home. Without their help, we would not have the nice clean complex we have to offer our members and to the public for our dances. We have earned a 100 mark from the Pasadena City Health Department and comply with the rules of the City Fire Department. We have received many nice comments about the appearance of our lodge.

This past Sunday, March 9th, one of the largest groups from Lodge 172 attended the District V meeting held at Lodge 142 in Houston and we are proud of our activity in district affairs.

Two of our members were elected to office -- Dan Berry as first vice president and Tennie Walla as secretary; also Lodge 172, Pasadena will host the District V fall meeting.

We plan to work with the district officers to have a bigger and better meeting Sand hope to have a large attendance.

District V was happy to have Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and family in attendance and he was very impressive in his talk concerning the SPJST Society.

He also presented various lodges with plaques concerning the Statewide Child Abuse Program which the SPJST has undertaken. Lodge 172 was one of the lodges to receive a commendation plaque and I am proud of the members of Lodge 172 who took an active part to help this cause.

We had the leadership of our fraternal organizer to thank,mainly Sister Rose Tannecka,in obtaining this honor. She has performed a wonderful job the past two years.

Our Saturday night dances have been drawing good crowds and, if you don't come to these dances, you are missing out on some good fun and music.

Direct billing has been given to the Supreme Lodge office and you can expect to receive your statement from Temple in the future; if you have any questions, please contact one of the officers of the Pasadena lodge or leave your phone number on our recorder.

I wish to inform you that our District V meeting was very well attended by lots of real good listeners and interested members from few lodges with a sense of humor that belong to District V. Brothers and Sisters, we really are indeed interested in what our fraternal order stands for, how it functions and

for whose behalf. Members, please let us all start working together for a better and more prosperous 1986 year.

Wake up members, stop and think what a fraternal order can do for you in the future and be mindful of such a thing because without our help and, especially, those who are really active, let us continue giving the Society our fullest support with the right foot forward; if we don't give a helping hand to our organization, how can a fraternal order grow? Do yourself a favor by attending meetings, be polite and socialize, also show your order what you can do for it because it will stand ready to help you. Be a good and smiling brother or sister because we love you at Lodge No. 172.

Lodge 172 had a very good attendance at the recent District V meeting. I had the privilege to meet our honorable Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his lovely wife. We are indeed proud of him and his lovely wife. I also had the pleasure of meeting many other local lodge leaders.

District V President Sister Clara Broz recognized many lodges for last year's Child Abuse Program with a plaque commending lots of workers for their fraternal efforts; also Lodge 172 was among the plaque recipients.

My wife, Esther Mikeska, won the $50 prize. We are indeed proud of our Sister Tennie Walla who was elected secretary at the District V spring meeting held March 9th.

March 3rd several of us went to the opening of Pasadena's Sesquicentennial Celebration with our Czech Flag and SPJST Lodge 172 Banner. All of us were dressed in our Czech costumes which was a beautiful occasion. Many of you have missed a real thing that comes every 50 years.

We are hoping to see it again.

We were sad and sorry to hear our dearly beloved member, Sister Renea Orderner, passed away this morning in a hospital. May she and the rest of our departed members rest in peace.

Czech Taught At Alvin CC A course in Conversational Czech is currently being taught at Alvin Community College in Alvin, Texas Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The classes, which began February 3rd and will continue through April 7th, are open to all those interested in learning or increasing their knowledge of the Czech language and the history and culture of Czechoslovakia. The class is being taught by Bernard Pivonka.

Czechs Pause, To Look Back The revival of interest in ethnic heritage is heartily displayed by the recently organized group known as Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA).

This independent organization involving many key Czech Texans has a primary goal of promoting Czech involvement in the Sesquicentennial activities but its efforts include numerous other historical projects.

TOCA is approved by the Texas Sesquicentennial Commission and is an official Texas Independence Association.

In addition to promoting numerous Sesquicentennial celebrations and events, TOCA is encouraging and setting forth guidelines for a massive effort to gather information and compile historical data on contributions of Czechs to Texas history. `We encourage the Czechs of Texas to research what Czech Texans have done," Jerry Valchar, TOCA executive director, said. "We need to acquaint our younger Czech Texans with the proud history and accomplishments of their Czech pioneer forefathers."

TOCA has spurred local historians to begin histories of communities, families, chuches, schools and many other projects enumerated in the organization's detailed handbook.

More information can be obtained by writing to TOCA, P.O. Box 3147, Temple, Texas 76501.

A prime example of one work underway is a book about "Czechs In The Civil War" sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. "It is estimated that there were some one hundred - thirty Czech men and boys who were involved in the Civil War and it is hoped that some information can be developed on each one." Judy Feldman Wright said, "This will include not only those who served in the Confederate Army, but also the few who enrolled in the Union Army, or both! The research will also include the men who avoided being conscripted."

The book will also include a section on those early Czech settlers who hauled cotton by wagon and oxen to Mexico. Those Texans of Czech descent knowing of an ancestor who served in the Civil War are encouraged to mail details to Czech Civil War Author, P.O. Box 800502, Houston, Texas 77280.

Member's Photography Featured SPJST

The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center Photography Collection at the University of Texas at Austin houses the archive of Jno. Paul Trlica, studio photographer in Granger, Texas from 1909 up through the 1950s. The majority of the photographs are studio portraits of the residents of this largely Czech community. In addition there are views of the town, festivals, parades, and functions of church and Czech organizations.

From May 2 - 10, concluding with the Granger Lake Fest, members of the Texas Photographic Society and photography students will document the town of Granger. An exhibition of the best views will be created and shown in Granger in the fall. The exhibit will include some of Jno. Trlica's historic photographs, adding a historic perspective to the contemporary documentation.

History Of Gladys Hix Of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Life

I am Gladys Hix. I was born February 14, 1909 in a small town east of Nashville (Lebanon, Tennessee).

My mother and father stayed there until I was 5 years old. Then we moved to Nashville. I had two brothers and we attended public schools and high school in Nashville.

At the age of 17, I went to work for the telephone company. I had to work split hours and worked seven days a week. We didn't get a day off. Even on holidays, we had to work just the same. I was trained to work on either side of the switch board room. The A side and B - board which was a board that was signed of trunks and different trunks to out - of - town operators. I worked in long distance until 1919 and 1927 and then I decided I wanted to do private board exchange. I did this for a few days and went to work to relieve one of the operators at the Andrew Jackson Hotel for 2 days. I stayed there from 1927 until 1931. My term of service was broken, of course. Then I went to work for the National Life Insurance Company.

In 1931, I was married to Jesse Claborn Blazer. We were married four

years and we had two children. My first baby was born dead and Juanita, who is my heart and my life. My divorce ended sadly and then I was single for seven years.

In 1946,. I was married to Hal Hix. He was getting ready to go to the service. We had planned to be married before he went into the service, but we decided that it would be better we wait until he could come home so that, if he was harmed in any way or hurt, I would not have to care for him. He would not like that; it would not be good for me. When he returned, we were married and he went to work in a restaurant that he had bought and I still worked for the Insurance Company until 1948. We bought our home and he stayed in restaurant business until 1952. We wanted Juanita to go to Aslit Litton High School. We felt like that was one of the best schools. She finished high school there and went to work in a dentist office. Juanita worked two years and then went to Texas and married Ernest L. Chudalla. They have been married for 31 years and have two children.

My husband died three years ago, April 30th. Hal had a severe heart attack and lived three days. Juanita and Ernest were at his bedside when he passed away. When they came home to tell me, Juanita quoted: "Mother, daddy is gone." I did not say a word, I just put my hands over my face and walked to the living room and pulled the drapes and looked down in the Valley. The lights were on; it was dark.

I just wanted to think of something that was sweet and lovely. Even in death, we can be kind and I thought "God's little Angel was picking flowers for the Master's bouquet and she needed one more and selected Hal. I cried and was broken - hearted, but I just brushed the tears away and went on and did the best I could. Juanita, Ernest and I selected his casket, his clothes and made funeral arrangements. After the services were all over, I was given the United States flag that was on his casket. I tried to give it to the nursing home where I stayed previously and the man stated the flag was too heavy. I just thought back through the days, it was not too heavy when the boys raised the flag on Iwo Jima. Many boys lost their lives and everybody knows that night, so I wish I could find someone who would like to have the flag so it would not just rot away.

Hal had many friends. He was a Mason and had a Masonic. funeral. He was a Mason for about 37 or 38 years.

We put the flowers that we thought was enough on his grave and on the graves that were nearby.

I have learned since Hal went away that God doesn't close one door without opening another.

As time went on, I had to move to Texas. I moved with Juanita and Ernest. They helped me with by belongings. I had to sell my house and they helped me with it. After that I had to be put in a nursing home. The doctor suggested that my mother go, too. If she lives through May 27th, she will be 98 years old. I can't wait on her, of course, but I watch after her and see if she needs anything4 can tell Juanita and Ernest.

I was in Wharton Nursing Home about 1 1/2 to 2 years and then I came to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, Texas. I did not know where I was going until the next morning.

They told me to just get ready that I was moving. I have been here ever since and I find the place, of course, not like home, naturally, but it is the next best. The food here is good and

the place is clean. The people here are all kind and good to me.

After living in Nashville for so long. I often wonder what I am doing in a small town of Needville, Texas. All of my telephone life and many different trouble calls we had, I called many towns and always got Houston but I never did get Needville until Juanita put me in this home. I have learned since I have been here that if you want a friend you must be one. I find people will be kind to you and good if you will only let them. Some people will not let you be good to them regardless of how hard you try. The best way I can figure out whenever you feel like you have gone the last mile of the way and you can't do anything about it, just leave them alone.

Friday, February 14th, the people in charge of the home had a Valentine party and, since it was my birthday, my daughter gave a birthday party for me and all the people in the home. I think they all enjoyed it very much and the last Friday in February we had a party for all the people who had a birthday in February which was very nice. Mr. Marx's wife, Martha, gave me a chance to dance and I danced once with Tony Ondracek which I enjoyed. I hope, as time goes on, we will enjoy parties and things like that.

It means so much when you don't have a home and this is next best. Sunday afternoon, Dr. Ray Cooper from Corpus Christi and his aunt, Mrs. Westphal, visited me and wanted to see the home, the rooms, ask about the food and the way people were treated here. Mrs. Westphal is up in her early 90s and is able to walk around, feed herself and clothe herself. I believe she will be a joy to the other people here.

She is an ex - school teacher and is such a lovely person.

Thinking back to my telephone days, I was working 9:00 to 1:00 and 5:00 to 9:00 and we lived about 11/2 miles from the bus station. In the winter time the hill would get extremely slick and cold from the snow. One day I fell and I told my daddy that I would just sit there and freeze to death. He said "Now, Gladys," I don't think that is the way the Lord had prepared for me to die so I'll just walk on and I'll try to explain to Juanita, your mother and two brothers. They will understand and, when Juanita gets older, we can explain to her then. I got up and I thought, "my goodness, ' my baby'.' I brushed the snow from my clothes and I walked on. The hill never seemed as long as it did to me that night when it was so bad.

This is my life story. I hope to spend the rest of my days in a place like this where everyone is so nice and kind.

People being kind is what I was used to all my life. I try not to raise my voice to anyone but sometimes I do. I forget, I guess. I want to be nice to everyone and I hope you will enjoy this story of my life.

American-Czech CS Undertakes Huge Project The American - Czech Culture Society is composed of Czech fraternal societies, and Czech mutual insurance associations; namely, CSA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, SPJST, SVPS, WFLA, American Sokol Organization, Catholic Czech Club, Circle of Czech Women and the Historical Society of the Czech Club.

We have been sponsoring a "Czech Day" at the State Fair of Texas since the early 1950s. This year - 1986 - there is something very special, "The Texas Sesquicentennial" - something that can only happen once in every 50 years.

We are planning a three - day celebration - Octotber 3, 4 and 5, 1986 with a "Souvenir Program Book."

The descendants of John and Mary (Caka) Kubena will hold a family reunion April 6, 1986 at the St. Joseph's Hall in Moulton, Texas beginning with a Holy Mass at 10 a.m.

John Kubena [1857 - 1922] had three brothers, Matthew and Jeffery of Flatonia and Albert of New Mexico plus three sisters, Mrs. Emil (Annie) Gieptner, Mrs. Susie Leidolf of Lavaca County and Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Klekar of Novohrad.

Mary [Caka] Kubena [1855 - 1925] had two brothers, Martin Caka of Austin County, Albert Caka of Shiner plus three sisters, Mrs. Anton (Katherine) Jemelka, Mrs. James (Sophie) Lahodny of Shiner and Mrs. Frank (Lizzie) Janecek of Moulton.

John and Mary (Caka) Kubena had eight children, Hedwig (Mrs. Ignac Jalufka), Frank married Agnes Kubenka, Mary (Mrs. Adolf Hofner) of San Antonio, Susie (Mrs. Henry Butschek), Annie (Mrs. Frank Jurek), Joseph married Bessie Zapalac, John married Katie Tylich and Bohurnir married Dora Sturm.

The first reunion of descendants of Jan Orsak (John Orsag) and Anna Konarik will be held Sunday, April 20th in Giddings at the American Legion Hall located on Highway 77.

The reunion will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. In addition, a pre reunion hospitality room will be open for family members Saturday, April 19 between the hours of 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Rustic Inn, also located in Giddings on Highway 290.

Jan and Anna Orsak arrived in Texas from Novy Hrozenkov, Moravia in late March 1881, accompanied by five of their seven children. Upon reaching Texas they were rejoined by the remaining two children who had preceded the main family by almost a year. Some time after arriving in Texas the family named Orsak was changed in usage to Orsag, although some later descendants re - adopted the Orsak name.

Families of the children of Jan and Anna Orsak from which descendants now living have come, and the main counties of residence for these families are as follows: Anton Orsag and Anna Supak (Lee County), Apolonia Orsag and Paul Orsak (county unknown), Joseph Orsag and Anna Novosad (Milam County), Lukas Orsag and Anna Sebesta (Burleson County), Peter Orsag and Anna Rubac (Milam County), Vine Orsag and Anna Orsak (Harris County), and Vincencie Orsag and Joseph Sirocka (Harris County).

Fraternally, Sue Meadows, SYD —SPJSTJanet Marek has been active with the SPJST Youth Club for the past 10 years. She has been an SPJST member for 40 years in the El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40. Janet is the mother of 4 grown children. Her son, Michael, was selected as State King this past year at State YAD. All of Janet's children have been active in the SPJST. Janet is employed full time as a Language Arts teacher in the El Campo School District. She also finds time to work with 4 - H youth as well as SPJST youth. Janet enjoys upholstering, crafts, camping and working with plants. Janet always finds pleasure in watching young people grow and achieve their personal goals in life.

The SPJST is fortunate to have such a fine person as Janet Marek involved with our youth program.

April Vestnik Project JOSEPH PETER, JR. Moravian - born Joseph Peter, Jr. was eleven when his father brought his family to Texas in September 1856.

The group stopped briefly at Cat Spring and La Grange, and finally settled at Dubina. Dubina was a small town which sprang up on the east bank of Navidad Creek about five miles northeast of Schulenburg. The town was renamed "Dubina," which in Czech means "oak grove." Young Joseph first learned the blacksmith trade, and opened his own shop at Dubina. A Confederate sympathizer, he was too young for military service,

so he was engaged in hauling cotton to Mexico. After the war, he established a well - known store, saloon, post office and cotton gin in his community.

Joseph's father had built a log house in 1858 in which Roman Catholic services were conducted until 1877, when the first church was built. Joseph, Jr. donated the land for this church building. In 1890 Joseph, Jr. was elected to the state legislature as the representative of Fayette County.

Peter's spirit of public service continued until his death March 26, 1924.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club To Meet Dear Members, Sunday, March 9, 1986, District VI held their spring district meeting at the El Campo - Hillje SPJST Hall. Three youth clubs were represented and participated in the youth program.

Afterwards a delicious luncheon was enjoyed by everyone.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The El Campo - Hillje Youth Club attended the District IV spring meeting March 9, 1986. We had a booth to sell tickets on prizes that we had furnished.

At the beginning ,of the meeting, we performed three skits with the help of Lodge 30, Taiton. The first skit, "Ten In a Bed", was performed by Kim Kacal, Jolly Henderson, Darren Dybala, Lori Holub, Patrick Bartos, Mary Ann Bartos, Sharron Borak, Danny Borak, Martha Bartos, Veronica Bartos, Pam Brandt (all of Lodge 40), and Valerie Roye from Lodge 30. Then, Jody Henderson and Kim Kacal (Lodge 40) performed a funny skit called "There's A Hole In The Bucket." Finally, Kim Kacal (Lodge 40), and Stephanie Roye (Lodge 30) acted out a poem entitled "MeeHoo With An Exactly Watt."

Our performance was followed by those of Taiton and Victoria.

During the rest of the meeting, we took time out to brainstorm on some ideas for camp. Later we had refreshments furnished by Lodge 40 and Lodge 138, our hosts for the afternoon.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels YC Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, We met in January to plan a skating party and plan our Easter and Valentine projects.

We planned a trip to Michael's to look for projects for YAD. For a Valentine's project we made three Valentine trees and took them to Colonial Manor, Oakcrest and River Gardens (homes for the elderly and mentally retarded/handicapped.

For our regular meeting, we met and started Easter projects for the adults of the lodge. We are also going to make Easter gifts for the various rest homes in the area.

Lodge 40 Youth Club Held March Projects Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends, The SPJST Lodge No. 40 Youth Club of El Campo - Hillje held their March meeting March 6, 1986 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room of El Campo.

Our meeting was opened by Jody Henderson, due to the lateness of President Lori Holub and Treasurer Darren Dybala. Then we all stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jody Henderson read the minutes of the previous meeting, due to the absence of Secretary Danny Borak.

Darren Dybala, treasurer, read the treasury's report, collected dues and called the roll.

At the meeting future events were discussed; these included camp, District VI spring meeting, door prizes and skits needed for this event.

The eight attending members welcomed our four guests, Anita, Valerie and Stephanie Roye (members of Lodge 30) and also Sara Zorrilla, a new member of Lodge 30.

March birthday celebrants were Sharron Borak and Mary Ann Bartos.

March contest projects (original Easter baskets) were judged by two of our guests, Valerie and Anita Roye.

The winners were: In 6 to 11 Category -- 1st, Jared Dybala; 2nd, Sharron Borak.

In 12 to 17 Category -- 1st, Jody Henderson; 2nd, Kim Kacal; 3rd, Mary Ann Bartos.

For next month we will wear a western outfit to be judged.

After the meeting, we rehearsed our skits for the District VI meeting and planned the scenery for this event.

Later we were served refreshments

by Mrs. Joe Henderson of Ganado; we had Rice Krispie treats and punch.

Our next meeting will be held April 3, 1986 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Gold Room.

Children who are recovering from a mild infection of influenza or chicken pox can be stricken with Reye's syndrome -- a rare but life threatening condition. Its symptoms: Persistent vomiting, violent headaches, sleepiness or lethargy, wild shifts in mood, disorientation and delirium. An ill child showing these symptoms must be taken immediately to a hospital for emergency treatment, warns the Public Health Service. Early diagnosis may reduce the chances that the child could go into a coma and die. *** A detailed study of 17,000 Harvard alumni confirms what has been widely believed -- that moderate exercise can add to one's life expectancy.

According to the study, reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Medicine magazines, men who participated in activities such as running, sports or even walking that used 2,000 or more calories per week had death rates that were one quarter to one third lower than those who were relatively inactive. For men with high blood pressure who burned up 2,000 or more calories each week, the risk of death was less than half that for inactive men with hypertension. ***
