[American Sokol] *** The time of year has arrived for members to host district meetings in their respective districts. All districts have announced recently the dates and lodges hosting their spring gatherings.

Below are the meeting listings as well as some of the specific locations.

March 9 -- District V - Lodge 142, Houston March 9 -- District VI - Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje and Lodge 138, Ganado at SPJST Hall, Hillje March 16 -- District II - Lodge 18, Elgin April 20 -- District III - Lodge 92, Fort Worth April 20 -- District VII - Lodge 133, San Antonio at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center April 27 -- District I - Lodge 186, Caldwell April 20 -- District IV - Lodge 49, Rowena at SPJST Hall, Rowena This being the Sesquicentennial year, we suggest that many of our members make an extra effort to attend and hear the very important matters of our Society's operation discussed by some of our officers from the Home Office.

At these meetings you will also enjoy a variety of entertainment as well as socializing and eating delicious homecooked food. We hope each district will have a record - breaking attendance. ***

The Society has announced a Photo Contest to all SPJST members 16 years and older. In this issue are the rules for those eligible and everyone must adhere to them. These rules will be published every week in the Vestnik (if possible) until May 1st. Good luck to every entrant! ***

Ever since Texas Sesquicentennial Commission announced the commemorative activities of our state's 150th anniversary, people seem to have generated more interest in their ancestors' culture and heritage. Let us hope all of you will continue to

preserve your culture and pass it on to our next generation.

Speaking of our "Lone Star State," it has to be seen in its entirety to believe what all is existing over our 262,000 square - mile state; it has something of interest to offer to everyone. From the north to the south and east and west, Texas cradles lakes and rivers with playgrounds and such.

Many water enthusiasts enjoy the state's waters as well as national historic parks and shrines such as the Alamo in San Antonio, the San Jacinto Monument near Houston, and the Presidio La Bahia at Goliad.

Special activities already took place at the Alamo, March 2nd. In Goliad, a living history program will be held March 22nd and 23rd, approximately one mile south of the city. At the San Jacinto Battle Ground, activities are to commence at noon April 20th with tours, plus a concert by the Houston Symphony Orchestra at 6 p.m. and fireworks at 8 p.m. San Jacinto Day (April 21st) will mark the Sesquicentennial Official Ceremonies at 2 p.m. A specially - commissioned performance by the Ballet San Jacinto will be held at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at 8 p.m. at the State National Park about 23 miles east of Houston. ***

Sincerity is the very foundation stone of true friendliness. It is also a human trait that is hard to counterfeit, as the sincere friendly impulse comes from the soul of a man and not from the calculating mind. Think kindly and friendly thoughts. If you have a heart and soul, why be ashamed of them?

Bring them into the shop, office and your daily life. The hand may be cunning, and the head may contain the brain that can conceive the most brilliant thoughts, but every good and worthy impulse comes from the heart.

If your application for disability benefits from the Social Security program is denied, can you appeal?

Yes, says the Social Security Administration. The first step is to apply for a reconsideration, which gives you an opportunity to submit any new evidence not previously considered.

Generally, you have 60 days after receiving a notice you disagree with to appeal. For details, ask for the leaflet, "Your Right to Question the Decision Made on Your Social Security Claim," at any Social Security office. ***

Unsuspecting respondents are being bilked by advertisements that promise high - income jobs that can be done at home with little training, warns the Better Business Bureau. Such promotions often ask you to buy lists of companies who hire people to work at home, costly equipment allegedly needed to make big profits, or detailed instructions explaining how the plan works. Remember, says the council, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. ***

How do you determine the value of a piece of real estate, a family heirloom, an expensive painting? Locating a qualified appraiser can be difficult. To make it easier, the American Society of Appraisers has published its 1986 directory, listing certified appraisers, state - by - state, in each specialty. For a copy, send $5 to: ASA, P.O. Notice To All SPJST

Lodges In District VII San Antonio Lodge 133 will be hosting the District VII spring meeting. The meeting will be held April 20 at the St. Margaret Mary's Activity Hall, 1314 Fair Avenue.

We would like to have a report from all the lodges in our district to give us an account as to how many members are going to attend the meeting. These reports are very important to us because we want to know how much food we need to prepare. We will be serving a dinner at 12:30 p.m.

The hall will be open at 12 noon and registration begins immediately.

Meeting will convene at 1:30 p.m.

There will be a cash bar.

We hope to hear from you not later than April 14th. Further information will be in the Vestnik at a later date.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 9, 1986 at the Grant Building in Hallettsville with Lodge President Linda Mikush presiding.

Janelle Chudej led the members in the pledge to the United States flag.

Gaye Galetka read resolutions of sympathy for our departed members, Jerome Bucek and John Trojcak.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved after a minor correction. Correspondence followed. Secretary Holy read the names of our 50 - year members; namely, Jerome Drozd, Lanelle Koether, Mary Rabel and Selma Woytek who will receive their pins in the mail.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky, Co Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave reports.

The members voted to rent a safety deposit box at the bank for the lodge to keep old records, lodge history, etc.

Members were reminded of the District VI spring meeting to be held Sunday, March 9th; since this is our regular meeting date, the members voted not to have a March meeting.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, April 13th. The youth club plans to honor Easter that day.

The meeting adjourned. The ladies enjoyed entertainment sponsored by the youth club. Refreshments and lunch were served.

In honor of Valentine's Day, a candy guessing game was held; lucky winner was Gaye Galetka. A heart shaped candy box, the door prize, was won by Janelle Chudej.

Members present with a birthday in January, February or March were Ida Neubauer, Elsie- Mascheck and Gaynell Chudej. Sister Elsie Mascheck won the birthday cake.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, April 13th at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. Refreshments and lunch will be served as usual. Members are encouraged to attend.

Lodge 18 To Host District II Meeting Elgin Jan Zizka Lodge No 18 held its regular meeting February 11, 1986.

Twenty - one members attended the meeting which was on our coldest day of the new year President Roy Simank opened the meeting and the roll call of officers showed our vice president and youth leader were absent.

The minutes of the previous month's meeting were read by Secretary Gilbert Kubicek. They were approved as read.

The following reports were given and approved; treasurer's report by Sister Alice Kovar, financial secretary report -- Brother Lambert Peterson, bar chairman's report -- Sister Alice Kovar, ticket chairman report -- Sister Gladys Mogonye, and building/grounds' report -- Brother Ruben Krieg.

In January, the Sesquicentennial wagon train visited Elgin. As an on going thing, members of the train filmed various traditional/ historial events as they were making their 3000 mile journey through this state. Our youth club was filmed performing the

Maypole dance. Hopefully, thousands of people will view this film and discover that tradition is alive in Elgin.

Our Youth Leader Curtis Young did an amazing job of getting things organized on a short notice.

Plans for the District II meeting are under way. We hope to feed everyone a fine barbecue meal.

The door prize was won by Brother Ruben Krieg; then the meeting adjourned.

30, Taiton Meeting Lodge

Our Lodge 30, Taition meeting was held February 2, 1986 and was called to order by President Mary Mrnustik.

We were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by our youth club members and everyone remained standing for a silent tribute to our departed members.

Secretary Wanda Dorotik had roll call with all officers present. The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer's report was given by Annimae Merta.

The lodge decided to donate $25 to the Margaret Trilicek Cancer Fund. A $50 check was also given to President Mary Mrnustik to present to the Youth Club. We hope this will help them with their youth activities during the year.

Business meeting was concluded and the meeting adjourned. Our next meeting was set for March 2, 1986.

Dear Vestnik Friends and Readers: President Rita Vanek called the February 19th meeting of Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje to order at 7:35 p.m.

Youth Flag Bearer Kim Kacal led the Pledge of Allegiance. A minute of silence was observed for our departed members.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers. All officers and trustees were present.The minutes of the January meeting were accepted as read.

We wish to acknowledge the passing away of our member Diane V. Fregia and State Field Manager Silas Smith.

We received a thank - you for memorial donations to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Edith Sefcik, Hugo Vackar, Sr. and Anton J. Hubenak.

We wish to congratulate 50 - year members Lorraine Cry, Clarence Kopecky, Joe J. Kopecky, Jr., Frank J. Kresta, Edward F. Rod, Charlie Stehno and Matilda Stropek. Their 50 - year pins and celebration are to come at a later date.

From The District Youth Counselor District II Plans Activities The District spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 16, 1986 at Lodge 18, Elgin. The meeting is a business meeting but we will also have food and fellowship, door prizes, a short youth program. The business meeting will include recognition of 50 - year members, prizes for sales representatives, recognition of Child Abuse donations, election of officers, installation of officers, date and place of next meeting (fall), and many numerous reports.

Lodge 18, Elgin and the District II officers would like to extend an invitation to the Supreme Lodge officers and their wives, all local lodge officers and their spouses, all members of the SPJST District II and other districts. Rudy, you and Maxine are invited and we are looking forward in having you there!

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. and we plan a short break at about 3:30 p.m. which will be followed by a short youth program, then will continue the remainder of the meeting.

At the conclusion of the meeting, door prizes will be awarded to children and adults. Then we plan to eat and have fellowship. The meal will be free to the membership but we are asking your help by bringing a salad, a vegetable or a dessert. The chicken, sausage and beans will be donated by Lodge 18 and District II and prepared

by Lodge 18 members, also at the conclusion of the meeting, free drinks will be furnished for a period of time.

These drinks will be furnished by Lodge 18, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and Brother Leslie Gustafson of Elgin, so you can see that the District H officers are planning an enjoyable and full afternoon for you; do make plans to attend our District II spring meeting March 16th in Elgin.

We discussed the unfinished business which was a Valentine party at the State School in Crockett; we were to meet there at 1:45 p.m.

The youth leader's report was that we will not meet next week due to our six weeks' test.

Lodge 74 YC Entertained Locally

Dear Vestnik Readers, Last week our Lodge 74 youth held a party for the Crockett State School.

The state school is a home for boys who have committed crimes such as petty theft, drug abuse and possession, truancy and who are runaways.

Our Youth Club was invited to dance for an annual festival in Lovelady, called the Lovefest. It occurs every year around Valentine's Day. We had cloggers and square dancers.

We also had a Valentine party for the State School for boys in our area.

We ate, danced and played games.

Funeral services for Emil Edward Holubec, 88, of Route 4, Caldwell, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Phillips - Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Snook Brethren Church, officiating. Burial was in the San Antonio Prairie Cemetery.

Brother Holubec was born May 21, 1897 in Burleson County, Texas. His parents were the late Joseph and Anna Holic Holubec.

He had lived in Burleson County all his life in the Deanville community until he became unable to stay alone.

He moved to Mesquite to stay with his daughter.

He was a farmer and rancher and a member of the Sons of Herman!!

Brethren faith.

Brother Holubec was married Laura Kiel 22 February 1922 in

Caldwell. She preceded him in death February 9, 1937; also preceded in death by two sons, John Louis and Lonis Holubec.

Survivors include his daughter, Virgie Churchwell of Mesquite; two sons, Gaylin Holubec of Houston and Eugene Holubec of San Antonio; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Frank and John

Wednesday, March 5, 1986—VESTNiK/11 Holubec; and by four sisters, Annie Kristof, Mary Dlabay, Liddie Bermann and Millie Klagmann.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Clark, Franklin Beran, Melvin Bierman, Johnnie Douglas, Clint Luska and C.W. Gerland.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Jeanette Smith; one sister, Erna Morrow of Waco; three brothers, Louis H. Smith of Rosebud, Leroy Smith and James Smith of Waco, Texas.

Brother Silas was a retired post engineer employee, having been stationed at the Waco Army Reserve Station. He was a member of St. Louis of Knights Church, Catholic Columbus No. 1358, National Association of Federal Retirees, RVOS Insurance and a member of SPJST since 1967.

Brother Silas became the first state field manager of the Supreme Lodge in 1973 and held this position at the time of his death. He was also a representative for RVOS Insurance as a salesperson and appraiser.

Words cannot express the great loss and emptiness at the passing of our Brother Silas. He was a big man to all of us, as a person as well as stature.

We ask God to grant him eternal rest and peace. Comfort, strength and courage, to the family of our brother.

Brother Chudej was born December 20, 1900 to Joe and Veronica Kotrla Chudej in Milam County, Texas.

In 1923 he married Lillie Juria, was a retired employee of Santa Fe Railroad, and was a faithful member of the Buckholts SPJST Lodge No. 15 for 45 years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

January 30th at the Marek - Burns Laywell Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Gene Kotrla officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Chudej of Buckholts; two sons, Johnnie Chudej of Buckholts and Raymond Chudej of Academy; two daughters, Lorene Dudik of. Features El Campo Math Teacher Also Paints Posters Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Met

By Bob Olson Courtesy El Campo Leader News [January 22, 1986] When most people think of math teachers, they probably think of somebody who has a noggin filled with numbers.

That's not the case with Elaine Berkovsky. She has a unique way to clear her head of logarithms, angles, geometric measures and other numeric figures.

The math teacher at El Campo High School clears her head by making posters. Friends and members of her family are the beneficiaries of her talent. So are the customers of a local pub.

Her posters can be seen hanging on the walls of Kutac's Place. She makes one for every imaginable occasion.

Currently a poster highlighting the upcoming Super Bowl is hanging adjacent to the bar.

Other times she's had one on display were at Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving, New Year's Day, Independence Day, and numerous other occasions such as when somebody is sick, for showers, anniversaries, chili suppers and during barbecue cookoffs.

There were no holidays or special occasions in August so she drew a sign of a swimming pool with people lounging about. Then she cut the labels off numerous brands of beer and filled the pool with them. artistic pastime She began her

while a student at Southwest Texas State University. It was during the time that she began to make paintings.

"I did them for fun," she said.

Her first serious project was a poster for her father's 70th birthday. That was about five years ago. Since then her hobby has really taken off.

Those who have driven by J.W. Faltisek Contractors and Krpec Welding and Sheet Metal have seen her work. She's responsible for the signs those companies have beckoning to customers.

Besides making posters at Kutac's, Berkovsky designs and paints them for just about anyone.

"If they ask for them and I have the time, I'll do them," she stated, noting that she still gets calls from her hometown of Shiner asking for her handiwork.

Anybody watching this year's Oiler Bronco game on television in November may have seen one of her samples there. Berkovsky was just one of millions across the nation who saw her poster from an end - zone angle.

She also had one of her pieces of work at this year's Aggie - Longhorn game.

Most of her posters range in price from $5 to $10. Most of them take her about three hours to complete. If she uses a few motifs on a poster, it can take her up to 10 hours.

"If I had to draw a portrait of somebody, I- couldn't do it," she admitted. "They're too exact."

Berkovsky likes to put the personality of her clients into the posters.

"I like to make a sign just for them not one you could put somebody else's name on it."

She said her customers help out a lot on the creative end of her projects by telling her their likes, dislikes and hobbies.

Asked how her hobby mixes with her career, Berkovsky was quick to answer "It helps relax me and gets me away from grading papers."

A couple of her friends said her ambition was to be the best math teacher in El Campo school system.

"She probably will be," said one friend.

Another said, "She already is one helluva good math teacher."

Besides excelling at her career and hobby, Berkovsky is known to be "a farmer girl at heart." In her spare time, she chops wood, hauls hay, butchers hogs and paints houses. In addition to all of that, she refinishes furniture .

Admirers of her work probably give her a grade of A - plus.

Member Announces For Senate Seat

Joe Hubenak, former member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1968 to 1978, has announced that he will be a candidate for the Texas State Senate Seat 18 being vacated by Senator John Sharp.

Hubenak, a local businessman, is well - known in the 18th Senatorial District as a voice for the agricultural, small business community and fraternal societies.

Hubenak, 48, born in Burleson County, Texas, graduated from Alvin Junior College and earned his BBA in Accounting from the University of Houston in 1965. From 1966 to 1980 he was owner of Hubenak and Associates Business and Tax Consultants in Rosenberg. In 1980 he became owner of Joe Hubenak Chevrolet in Rosenberg and in 1982 acquired East Bernard Ford.

In January 1969 the voters of District 21 sent Hubenak to Austin as their State Representative where he served his district ably for ten years.

During this period he gained the

lived grew, he attended the University of Colorado in 1965 for post graduate training, and, in 1973, went to the Rural Development School at the University of Nebraska. toward the agricultural and business communities.

Joe A. Hubenak served eight years in the Texas National Guard. He served in Company "A" 136 Tank Battalion, 36th Infantry Division stationed in Rosenberg, Texas. Five and one - half years of his National Guard service was as Platoon and Motor Sergeant for Company "A." --SPJST-

Joe Hubenak respect and admiration of his constituents and fellow legislators while serving as Chairman of the Committee of Agriculture and Livestock from 1973 to 1979 and as Deputy Director of the Texas Animal Health Commission from January 1979 to July 1980.

The family are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Richmond and of KJT (Czech Catholic Union of Texas), SPJST Lodge No. 81, Needville (Czech Fraternal Association), and Knights of Columbus Council 2801.

Just as owning his own business has made him aware of problems faced by the Small Businessman, growing up on a farm gave Joe first - hand knowledge of the agricultural community. Joe will tell you that he first learned about agriculture "on the job." The pressures and taxes plaguing the Businessman and Farmers must be addressed during the next session.

The bride is a 1984 graduate in Industrial Engineering at Texas A&M University. She is now employed by Tinker AFB software support in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The groom is a 1985 graduate in Electrical Engineering at Oklahoma State University. He is employed by Roclokell International in Richardson, Texas.

The rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom's parents at Holiday Inn in Waco, Texas the evening prior to the wedding.

The couple plan to honeymoon by making a trip to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and then to the Espcot Center and Disneyworld in Florida.

Following their honeymoon, the couple will reside in Richardson, Texas.

Tena and her family are all members of Lodge No. 66, Waco. Tena was also a member of the SPJST Youth Club in which she reigned as 1978 - 79 SPJST State Queen.

Of Interest Removing Smoke Damage From Fabric Item

St. Joseph's Church of Bellmead, Texas was the setting as Miss Tena Marie Urbanek and Mr. Cecil Eugene Woods were united in marriage Saturday, February 8, 1986, at 12 noon. The ceremony was performed

by Father George Henninger.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim L. Urbanek of Waco, Texas and granddaughter of Mrs. Joe Hyzak of Granger, Texas. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Woods, Sr. of Stillwater, Oklahoma and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cornett of Cushing, Oklahoma.

A heart - shaped brass candelabra displaying a cascade of red roses flanked each side of the altar. The unity candle rested on a brassholder was decorated in greenery.

Arrangement of red and white roses and gladiolas, accented with bows, rested at the altar.

Music was provided by organist Bart Webb and guitarist Berry Lee Hunter.

Mr. Hunter also sang "The Wedding Song." The congregation also sang "Pass It On." Kathy Urbanek read the appropriate passages in Genesis and I Corithians from the Bible. The gospel was from Matthew.

Escorted by her father, the bride wore a dress made by Mrs. Helen Shelton. It was made of white bridal satin featuring a sweetheart neckline and dropped - waist. Bodice artd sleeves were accented with rose lace and pearlized beads. The train was also trimmed with lace. The veil featured silk flowers and strands of pearls at the headpiece with delicate trim along the edge of the veil. Tena carried a bouquet of fresh white and red cascading roses sprinkled with baby's breath.

Karen Faye Shelton of Waco, Texas attended the bride as her maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Rebecca Lynn Baynham of Tyler, Texas and June Ann Simcik of Taylor, Texas.

Flower girl was Jennifer Nicole Flink of San Antonio, Texas.

The attendants wore long - sleeved tea - length dropped - waist gowns made of red bridal satin featuring a sweetheart neckline. Maid of honor's gown featured lace bodice and sleeves.

Each attendant carried a fresh - cut single red rose while the flower girl carried a wicker basket of fresh - cut roses. Each attendant wore black patent pumps to complete the outfit.

Studies on the removal of smoke damage from washable clothing indicate the best procedure may be washing them at home, says clothing specialist Dr. Ann Beard.

Tests on cotton, polyester and cotton/polyester blend fabrics show that washing removes smoke damage more effectively than dry cleaning, says the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service home economist.

Both visible smoke damage and odor may be successfully removed from washable fabrics using the following laundry procedures: Use the normal or regular cycle with warm wash and warm rinse. Keep the load small so fabrics have room to move easily in the water.

Use a liquid laundry detergent, following the manufacturer's recommendations for amount. If you don't have liquid laundry detergent available, use a powdered detergent containing phosphates and liquid chlorine bleach. Use the amounts recommended on the label. Be aware that the bleach may cause some fading or other damage to the fabrics.

Repeat the washing from three to five times until all smoke odor is gone.

Avoid drying the fabrics between launderings if possible. If the fabrics must be dried, use no heat in the dryer since heat may inhibit the removal of smoke damage. —SPJST-
