The last two Vestnik issues contained quite a large amount of information about the Sesquicentennial efforts of the Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) about various aspects of what is planned and what should be done in this year of 1986.

Last week and in this issue are notices of a meeting in the SPJST Supreme Lodge headquarters building pertaining to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) efforts to establish a permanent "chair" for the teaching of the Czech language at either the University of Texas (UT) in Austin or Texas A&M University (TAMU) in College Station. Your editor mentioned this before and it is sincerely repeated now -- now is the time for all Texans of Czech ancestry and all Czech - oriented organizations (lodges of CSA, KJT, KJZT; RVOS, SPJST, SVPS, WFLA, etc.) plus CESAT and TOCA and all church dignitaries -- Catholic bishops, monsignors, priests, and Czech Brethren reverends of Czech descent to stand together to reach this goal in this year! Functionaries like devout Czech Bishop John J. Morkovsky of the Galveston - Houston diocese and Reverend Henry E. Beseda, etc. can certainly help very much in this effort.

Remember the CEFT meeting at SPJST Supreme Lodge Home Office in Temple, Saturday, March 1st at 1 p.m. This editor hopes to see you there! *** If you are trying to get financial redress from a business or another individual, you should consider using your local small - claims court. The purpose of small - claims court is to help ordinary people recover relatively small amounts of money -- usually less than $500 -- without hiring a lawyer.

Found in virtually every part of the country, these courts permit consumers to present their complaints in person to an impartial judge who can order the offending party to pay any money owed. Court procedures are simple, informal and inexpensive.

Fees are usually less than $10.

Usually, you go to small claims when a person has harmed you financially and refuses to reimburse you. Examples: A garage has fixed your car improperly and won't give you a refund. A dry cleaner loses your new coat and won't replace it. A guitar you ordered from a music store fails to arrive, and the store won't refund your deposit. You can only sue for money, not for recovery of property, and you must appear in court, even if it means missing work.

The telephone number for the court clerk's office should be listed in your local directory. Someone there can tell you how to file suit. Although hearings are fairly informal, be prepared to present your case in a convincing manner. Bring along any written evidence, such as contracts, receipts, letters, bills and canceled checks.

Usually, you don't need a lawyer, although it is allowed. In most states, the other side also may be represented by an attorney. Sometimes, just the threat of a small - claims - court suit will cause the other party to settle

privately in order to limit legal fees.

An estimated 75 to 90 percent of all suits are settled out of court. That type of resolution is usually to our advantage. Even if you win in court, you may have a hard time collecting your award. If the defendants do not pay voluntarily, you will have to rely on the local sheriff, marshal or constable to collect, and he or she may show little interest. Settle for any offer that is 70 percent of your claim or higher. *** About two thirds of the people under treatment for high blood pressure -some 40 million Americans -- are not taking their medication properly.

Some have totally stopped taking medication. Doctors warn that they are all candidates for a heart attack or a stroke. Do not stop taking your medicine and do not change the dosage without permission, no matter how good you feel. If you are getting lightheaded, dizzy or tired, or if you are having trouble sleeping while on medication, consult your doctor. Your drug may be causing side effects that can be corrected with a new prescription. *** Does it make sense to rent a television set or videocassette recorder with an option to buy it at the end of the lease contract? Usually, you will end up spending several times what it would cost to buy the TV or VCR outright, advises Cornell University's Cooperative Extension. Suppose you rent a $400 TV set at $18 per week, with an option to buy the set at the expiration of a 78 - week contract. By the time the contract runs out, you will have paid more than $1,400 for the $400 set. Better to use a credit card to buy the set. Even at an 18 percent interest rate, which many credit - card companies charge, the set could be paid off at $36 a month within a year. *** To prevent an early shutdown of its popular mortgage - guarantee program, the Veterans Administration is imposing tight, temporary restrictions on VA - backed home loans. Scheduled to take effect on March 1st: No more guarantees for refinancing loans, a ban on guarantees for veterans who have received them before and a $90,000 ceiling on VA backed mortgages. To comply with the new Gramm - Rudman budget law, the VA can back no more than $11.5 billion in mortgages. Because of increased demand for GI home loans, sparked by the decline in interest rates, the VA program could run out of money by June. *** Many consumers are unaware of it, but one of the better places to shop for bargains may be the federal government. Every year, the General Services Administration conducts about 1,000 surplus - property sales across the country. Material sold to the highest bidder includes furniture, appliances, cleaning supplies, paint, hand tools, electronic gear and photo equipment. Most popular items are cars, station wagons, light trucks and vans. For details, contact the closest surplus - sales office of the GSA's Federal Supply Service Bureau. Your local congressional office, listed in most phone directories under U.S. Government, should be able to put you in touch. ***

SPJST Scholarship Application

Production figures will be based on earned premium rather then annualized premium as it has in the past.

Earned premium will be a more accurate method of calculating contest winners as it will only compute money actually received by the Supreme Lodge.

The District V spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 9, 1986, at Lodge 142, Houston.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A barbecued beef brisket dinner with all the trimmings will be served at 11:30 a.m., and the meeting will convene promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club will perform during the dinner hour.

On the agenda for this meeting is the election of officers, and there will also be a couple of fund - raising projects.

Notice To All SPJST Lodges In District VII San Antonio Lodge 133 will be hosting the District VII spring meeting. The meeting will be held April 20 at the St. Margaret Mary's Activity Hall, 1314 Fair Avenue.

We would like to have a report from all the lodges in our district to give us an account as to show many members are going to attend the meeting. These reports are very important to us because we want to know how much food we need to prepare. We will be serving a dinner at 12:30 p.m.

To Whom It May Concern Please be advised that the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) of Ceska Nadace Statu Texas will hold a meeting in. Temple at the SPJST headquarters Satur day afternoon, March 1, 1986. The meeting will start at 1 p.m. Everyone who is interested in the teaching and preservation of our Czech language should attend. The various clubs and organizations should send delegates.

The main purpose of this meeting will be to decide if the Czech people of Texas are willing to support a Czech Chair at one of our state universities.

Both the University of Texas and Texas A&M University are interested and we shall ask them to send their deans or someone to explain or answer any questions that we may ask.

Over a year ago when CEFT directors and officers met in Houston, it was decided that the organization would support a Czech Chair at one of the state universities. This chair would mean that, if a student or students fifty years from now or one hundred years from now, whether it would be a student or students wanted to study Czech, it would have to be offered and a scholarly professor would teach the course. Both state universities indicated that they are very interested in supporting this program and are willing to support us financially; one of the universities even said that they would match our contribution! Just think how much money could be raised if everyone who has a drop of Czech blood in them would donate a few dollars. Some are already talking about giving thousands and some do not even have any Czech blood in them!

My sincere appeal is that we all work together. We are inviting everyone who is interested to come and hear what it's all about. It does not matter what organization you belong to, what church you go to, what club you belong to or don't belong to. We are interested in everyone pulling together

Installation Of Lodge 15, Buckholts Officers Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by our new President, Joe Zajicek.

He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed brother, John Chudej.

We are in the process of having a Sesquicentennial picnic. More on this information at a later date.

Our guests were Thelma Grappell, Frank Janicek, Elfern Frenzel, Dan Balusek and Eugene Marek. Thanks for being our guests and visitors, and please come back.

Lodge 17 To Honor 50 - Year Members Dear Members: New Tabor Lodge 17 held its regular monthly meeting February 2nd, with all officers present.

The work to repair our lodge home has been started and will continue under the direction of Alvin Paul, Sr., and Theo. Dusek, Sr. It was decided that we do not need a new roof.

We discussed liquor liability insurance. We are seeking new information, but we will have to have it if we continue to keep the hall open.

We would like to express our thanks for the rabbit ears for the TV donated

by Matcek Furniture.

We have five persons celebrating 50 - years as members of SPJST. They are Frances Begeman, Olga Lochridge, Lydia Rode, Ben F. Trcalek, Sr. and Alma Valigura. We will celebrate with these members with a party at our April meeting; plans will be made at our March meeting.

Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek reported that the youth club would be going to see "Sesame Street" live on the 22nd.

The photo contest was also discussed, however, we don't know if anyone locally is interested.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 2nd.

25 Approves Improvements And Donations

Lodge

Lodge 28, East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: Either time is moving faster or something for here it is time again for Lodge Karel Jonas to hold another meeting. The regular monthly meeting will be held this Sunday, March 2nd, at 2 p.m., in the lodge hall. The agenda will include a discussion on the District VI meeting that is to be held March 9th and local lodge rules.

The meeting of the "Exultant Order of Luncheon Partakers and Munchers" will convene at the buffet table after the business meeting for luncheon.

The February 2nd meeting started with the sounding of the gavel at 2 p.m. Brother Jerome Hlavaty, Supreme Lodge SFM working Districts VI and VII, visited with us. He helped start our "reports" segment of our order of business with his report on the new insurance plan and also covered some of the newer existing insurance plans. With this, he covered annuities and held a short question - and answer session on all he had covered.

The annual audit report was given by the Audit Committee. The lodge is in better shape financially than the lodge hall roof. All other reports were accepted as given. A revision of the local lodge rules was read but not discussed. A motion was made and passed to accept the Audit Committee report and to pay them for their services. The meeting lasted longer than usual; it was about one (1) hour and seventeen (17) minutes long.

The door prize was won by Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner. A second prize, of candy hearts in a plastic heart case, donated by Sister Ann Luquette, was won by Sister Frances Haverda.

With the extras donated by Sisters Haverda, Kortis, Janik, Foytik, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval, the luncheon was a success and all "Partakers and Munchers" enjoyed themselves.

A short observation --- With all of these new insurance plans and annuities, which are all good not only for the person with the plan but the Supreme Lodge, the present 8 percent return to the local lodges will come to zero, soon. A plan should be formulated NOW before the 1988 convention so all bugs could be worked out. The value of policies five (5) years old and older should be used and not just the number. That is where the money is.

Dear Members: The February meeting of Lodge No. 25, Ennis, was called to order by President Johnnie I. Krajca with 23 members present.

New members voted on were Ben C. rrojacek and Terry L. Hickman acquired by Insurance Representative Ernest Haskovec. Additional insurance was sold to David Trojacek and Kenneth R. Trojacek.

Motions were made on the following items and all were approved; purchase Texas and Sesquicentennial flags, purchase sneeze bar for the kitchen, close in Yenta - hood in kitchen, purchase gravel for repairing yard, enlarge the stage, donate $50 to American Heart Association, and donate $50 each to Judy Kubin and Mack Navarro who are seriously ill.

Judy Kubin, Al Gurecky, Willie Hrabina, Jane Dixon, Mary Woods and Henry Mach were on the sick list.

Members to receive their 50 year pins in 1986 are Leona Akers, Milady Bobalek, Edwin H. Haskovec, Melvin Haskovec, Edwin J. Hubacek, Martha M. Kahrhoff, J.J. Kouba, Joe J. Lodge Landsfeld, Eric Moucha, George Patak and Vivian Vrana.

March 29 -- Lone Star Czechs and Robbie Crabb and Stephen Rieger Eddie Ray presented the flag and led the members April 5 -- Country Noblemen May 10 -- St. John Junior/Senior in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for a few Prom Two lodge members, Gene Knize moments for our deceased members, Brother August Kotrla and Brother and Steve Valek, spoke briefly on their campaign for District Judge and Frank Taeff.

We then had roll call of officers and Commissioner Precinct 2.

The next meeting will be March 13 at they all were present.

29, Taylor Prepares For Mayfete

Bobby Wuensche gave the Property Committee report and Albin Machu gave the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Donna Steger reported that 29 youth members, 2 visitors and 10 adults were present; they had one new member. For their social, they will have a skating party next Sunday at 4 p.m.

We had 2 new applicants, Jerry Kidwell and Jonathan Kidwell. We had one transfer, Milton Shiller, from Lodge 49 to Lodge 29.

Our Mayfete is coming up the first Sunday, May 4,and we will elect our queen next month at our regular lodge meeting.

Door prizes were won by Ronnie Reiger, Herbert Reithmeyer and Ila Mae Jansky.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 9 at 4 p.m.

Due to a slightly crowded schedule, a report was not given in January.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence, the January 8th meeting was presided over by Vice President Adolf Motal.

New members accepted, were Natalie Dawn Smith and Janet K. Duge. A thank you letter from SL President Howard Leshikar on our donation to the Statue of Liberty Renovation Fund was read to the members.

The 1985 books were audited by Vlasta Svoboda, Jarmilla Obermiller and Lois Elles. Everything checked out OK. The January meeting was at the Victoria County Electric Co - op Building. Ella Arnold furnished the refreshments. The door prizes were won by Frances Motal and her son, Jason.

The February 5th meeting was at Citizens National Bank and we had a nice gathering of 26 members. The meeting was presided over by President Franklin Elles. Vice President Adolf Motal was absent due to dental problems. The members were told of the death of Henry Janota, February 4th.

The lodge received its yearly lease money on the land it is purchasing.

The members voted to discontinue dues. District VI Director Matt Vanek discussed lodge liability insurance.

Field Representative Jerome J. Hlavaty gave a rundown on new types of insurance. Brother Hlavaty replaces the late Silas Smith who will be greatly missed by his friends.

It was decided to give the treasurer and the secretary - reporter the same amount of pay for their duties.

State Youth Director Sue Meadows presented Eric Motal with a B/W Panasonic TV as an award for his grand prize logo for the youth club.

Gayle Motal, daughter of Adolf and Valeria Motal of Stafford, made the dean's list for the fall semester at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Marketing is her major. In October 1985, Daryl Elles, son of Lois and Franklin Elles, was given the Gold Star Award. It is the highest county award for the 4 - H. Shannon Kocian, daughter of Harvey Kocian, who is in the seventh grade at Patti Welder School earned a first division rating in the regional solo and ensemble competition in West Columbia for Choir students. To all of these young people, congratulations for a job well done.

Czechfest Chairman Evelyn Horelka, announced booth and committee chairmen for the fest June 29th at the Victoria Community Center. The chairmen are: Publicity Katherine. Wokaty, Snack Bar Frances Motal, Beer - John Motal, Cake Walk - (undecided), Kolache Valeria Motal, Country Store - Vlasta Svoboda, Auction - Mary Raska, Games' Tickets - Wesley Schmidt, Door - Lois Elles, Entertainment Adolf Motal, Kitchen and Noon Meal - Daryl Elles, Children's Games Youth Leader loan Bond, Heritage Adolf Motal, and Booth Rental - Mike Ahlstrom. Anyone willing to help should contact the chairman of the particular booth that they would like to work in.

Door prizes were won by Theofil Kocian and youth by Aaron Spears.

35, Elk February Meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 35 held their regular meeting Sunday, February 9 at 3 p.m.

President Henry Breitkreutz called the meeting to order.

Flagbearer Dawn Pavelka led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Thirty - three members were present this month. Our guests were Charlie Eastern and John Bays from the Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Mr. Bays was here to enlighten us on the laws and regulations concerning the selling and consumption of alcoholic beverages on our premises. His talk was very informative for us all.

The minutes from the January meeting were read and approved as read.

Door prizes were awarded to Helen Dulock and Robin Breitkreutz.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Brother Ernest Banik and Sister Melissa Burney.

Congratulations to Randy and Mary Pavelka on the birth of Randice Morgan, born January 31, 1986.

After the meeting, the youth club had bingo with prizes being heart boxes of candy. Fun was had by all.

Lodge 88 Houston News Our February monthly meeting was short with our youth club as the main theme. The 1986 youth club officers were installed for the coming year by District V Director Jerry. Prochazka.

Youth Leader Marie Stayton presented the Youth Club Banner to the lodge at this time. The youth members and their parents have been having bake sales to earn the necessary funds for this project. The banner design contest was won by Marlene Migl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Migl and granddaughter of Sister Annie Vala. I believe this banner is the first of its kind. The youth wanted it to take with them when they appear at various events to let the people know who they are and who they represent. They also insisted on earning the funds for it: This was a worthwhile project and they should be very proud of themselves and of their glorious banner.

The May meeting is. 'Initiation Meeting' for new members again. We have not had a very good attendance of members to be initiated lately.

Let's all make it a point to bring in all our family members and friends who have not been properly initiated into our Society; also the sales representatives should invite all their new members. Let us work at having a large group here for the May meeting.

Cindy and Mark Wheeler had a nice Christmas gift this year. Little Timothy Mark arrived at 12:35 Christmas morning. He weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and almost arrived at the family Christmas Eve party.

Cindy was not going to leave until all the presents were unwrapped. Timothy has a "big" brother, Jeff, who will be three in April. Edna and Willie Wehring are the proud grandparents.

Willie is our Bingo chairman and serves on the Board of Trustees. Edna is a sales representative and works on the Bingo Committee.

Czech classes have started.

Instructor Jerry Shank holds classes every Monday at 7:30 at the lodge.

District V President Clara Broz invites you to the District V meeting Sunday, March 9, at Lodge 142. A barbecued beef dinner will be served and the Lodge 88 Concert Band and Choral group will entertain during the lunch time. The meeting starts at 1:30 with the election of officers to be held.

Jeff Murray, husband of Susan Schenburn Murray, had corrective foot surgery on both feet February 7th. It's a good thing he has his own RN to care for him. I'm sure Susan gave him plenty of TLC while he recuperated.

Marie Kostomlatsky, director of the forthcoming Czech play, informed me that practices are being held twice a week now. All is going as scheduled for the April 20 performance.

During that bad hail storm and tornadoes we had hit in the Tomball area last week, several of our lodge members suffered house damage.

Marilyn and Royce Jarisch who reside on Spring - Cypress Road had extensive tree damage, lost their hot houses and the garage roof flattened their travel trailer. Donna and Paul East, on Boudreaux Road, had broken windows, roof damage, and the aluminum siding on their home must be replaced. We are all thankful that they were not injured. That must be a frightening element of nature to be involved in.

Don't forget Manny Green plays in the Chandelier Ballroom Saturday, March 1st. Tickets are on sale in the

lodge office and will be available at the box office that evening.

88 Meeting Report Lodge

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 88 was held Monday, February 10, 1986 with 112 members in attendance. President Ermis thanked all those who helped make Anniversary Day a success.

Favorable financial reports were given by Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt and Treasurer Lynn Pflughaupt.

Youth Leader Marie Stayton presented the Lodge 88 Youth Club Banner and president of the teen youth group, Lee Pflughaupt, introduced the youth club officers for the Teen and Junior groups for 1986. The winner of the Lodge 88 Youth Banner contest was Marlene Migl. Congratulations, Marlene, on a job well done!

Committee Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox reported for the Entertainment Committee and announced the Original Telstars would be playing again Friday, February 21st.

Royal Warnasch reported for the Men's Club that they were repairing the tables and chairs and that they had cleaned the flower beds in front of the building and along the fence.

District V President Clara Broz announced that the District V spring meeting would be at Lodge 142 Sunday, March 9th. A barbecued beef dinner will be served starting at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and that the meeting would begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. and election of District V officers will be held.

Mary Kosut and Dorothy Pflughaupt were reported on the sick list and we hope each of you are feeling better.

Door prize winners were Bill Neskorik, Louis Roznovsky, Joephine Buri, Mary Tilich, and Amos Kadlecek won the Liberty Savings door prize.

Before adjournment, Guide Helen Hegwood led the membership in singing "Happy Birthday" to the February celebrants.

Lodge

Danbury Lodge 139 met at the fire station February 13th. The meeting was called to order by President Vincent Hechler.

After Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the last meeting and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and I reasurer Lonnie Lostak each gave their report, Secretary Lostak read a letter from the Supreme Lodge giving information on income taxes.

He then read a letter from Arnold Vrla of Dallas, stating that the American Czech Society was planning a souvenir program book for the Texas State Fair and was offering advertising space to the lodge. The membership voted to buy a half - page ad.

After obtaining the necessary monetary figures from Treasurer Lonnie Lostak, Secretary Tommie Lostak listed the lodge's donations to charity organizations in 1985 for his report to the Supreme Lodge.

The members voted to make a donation of $100 to the Sonny Best Lukemia Fund to help the young student with medical expenses.

After the meeting a lively social was held with dips and chips, and a wide variety of sweets being served.

Before departing, the members wished Helen Filipp and her husband, Bill, a "Bon Voyage" as they leave next week for a cruise to the Bahamas.

Sister Helen won the trip for being one of the top fifteen SPJST insurance salespersons in 1985.

Our lodge meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 1986 by President Dennis Hermis.

We had 45 members and visitors who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers showed that all officers were present, except Board Member Henry Hermis, Sr. Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the previous meeting which stood approved as read.

All officers' reports were given.

Our lodge will host the District V meeting Sunday, March 9th. A delicious barbecue dinner with all the trimmings will be served at 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Barbecue sandwiches will be served after the meeting.

Our Sick Committee is happy to report that Sister Emily Meiness is home now.

Auditing Committee report was read

by Sister Elizabeth Hermis.

New applicants are Christopher A. Browne, Judith Browne, Jamie M. Browne and Edwin 0. Emshoff who were all signed up by Sales Representative Sidon Tumis.

Sister Libbie Kovar made a motion to accept our new members, which was seconded by Elizabeth Hermis.

It was announced that Brother Sidon Tumis was the top salesman for December; he and Rosie are the winners of a cruise to the Bahamas.

Brother Sidon is a well - deserving winner for his fine efforts.

Capsule attendance prize for $5 went unclaimed by Travis W. Schank.

The next meeting prize goes for $10; come out because we need a winner!

Youngest member prize for $5 was claimed by 5 - year - old Tammie Patke.

Door prize went to Gene Dornak, Adela Stein, Elizabeth Hermis and Mary Ann Kieschnick.

Lodge 191, East Texas Activities February 8th, we had our country/western Disc Jockey Music Valentine's dance and it was a big ,uccess. The lodge was decorated very valentiney and thanks to everyone who helped and thanks to everyone who came to the dance. That's what makes it a success!

We had our lodge meeting Tuesday and all information and suggestions were brought out about what to do on our work day projects. Then February 15th, folks we had our work day and I do mean Work Day. We renovated the entrance office and added a kitchen room, and that same day, the whole septic system was installed, dug out, layed out, city approved and covered.

We started at seven in the morning and for all you people who couldn't make it on the work day, you wouldn't have minded the hard work after eating the Lumber Jack breakfast that the ladies prepared. I mean it was good.

At this time, I would like to thank the ladies and men who helped out.

They are worth their weight in gold and honorable mention; namely, Helen Anderson, Gloria Sizemore, Seale Towers, Helen Boyd, Kaye Sikes, Betty Thornton, Jerry Sizemore, Frank Juarez, Walt Williamson, Johnny Arnold, Bob Horton, Ken Thornton, John Anderson, James Bailey, James Sikes, Doyle Oliver and Jerry Sizemore, Jr. Please forgive me if 1 left someone out.

I'll have more on our February 22nd dance and more on our work projects next time.

The meeting was called to order by President Rita Alexander. She asked Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, to read the minutes from the last meeting.

They were approved as read.

Sister Lillie Spies, treasurer, gave her report and, like always, it was a good report. Both Lillie Spies and Rita Alexander thanked the ladies for the pastry and workers who helped during Anniversary Day. Our Sunshine chairman Sister Mary Kosut could not give her report because she had been in the hospital for tests and Sister Esther Holton had gone into the hospital. We wish both of these sisters a speedy recovery.

Sister Willie Mae Stang was at home not feeling ell.

Hostesses for February were Sisters Della Kadlecek, Bessie Dewer, Tilly Bily and Josephine Burt The meeting closed by singing "Happy Birthday" to the sisters who had birthdays in February.

Our next meeting dates are: March 5 --Games Party/Luncheon, and March 12 — Games Party/Meeting/Luncheon.

Friendship Club Of Fort Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: Thirty - seven members and guests, Lindal Rangel, Mary Renfro and Mary Ann Krivanek enjoyed another day of food, games and fellowship at the February meeting. Even though that day the rains finally came after 52 days of drought, it did not dampen the spirit of our members.

The birthday members for January were Eva Dockery and Frank Kovar.

For February, the birthday members were Mollie Walker, Rosemary Gribble, Ruby Jones and Roy Alholm.

Also other family members' birthdays are daughter - in - law, Kathy Alholm; grandson, Danny Alholm; and son, R.L. Alholm. We wish for all these Happy Birthday with many more to come.

Our correspondence contained a thank you letter from the administrator of the St. Theresa Home, for the Christmas monetary donation, also, a thank you note expressing appreciation for masses and kindness in time of bereavement from Rose Steinman and family.

Members, please remember that our meetings are to be called to order at 10:30 a.m. This will give our members time for visitation after the meeting, while the hostesses are preparing to serve the food. Games will be played after the luncheon.

The March 5th hostesses will be Rosemary Gribble, Geneva Hennessey and Gertrude Johnston.

Since more than needed game prizes were donated for the February meeting, no one will be asked to bring prizes for the March meeting.

Our congratulations to Otto Kurtz who retired after almost 44 years working with The Texas Electric Co. of Ft. Worth. Otto was honored by a group of friends at the home of Jo and Frank Prochaska with Lad Maly also being a host.

Our congratulations also to Alanna Albrecht, daughter of Mary Ann and Alvin Albrecht, who has won honors as an all - state high school basketball player. Besides her basketball skills including an uncanny shooting touch, she is in her senior year at high school and is tied for first place honors with a 4.0 grade point average at the Nolan High School. The senior class consists of 182 students.

Dallas Circle Of Czech Women Report Our Circle met February 6th.

President Zvolanek opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and then asked for a moment of silence for Christina Zemanek (mother of Sister Liddie Pavelka), Mrs. Anna Treka (sister of Adela Lesikar), Willie Houdek (brother of Miss Agnes Houdek), and for the seven astronaunts who lost their lives in the recent space shuttle explosion.

President Zvolanek welcomed guests Margarite Christy, Gilbert Kalich, Roy Alholm, Julius Podhrasky, Arnold Vrla, Charlie Kocian, Phil Reames and Bob Zvolanek. She also recognized Agnes Finch, who has not been at our meetings , lately.

Before going into the business part of our meeting, we were shown slides

of Fair Park and the planning in preparation for the Sesquicentennial year. A representative from the "Friends of Fair Park" Committee gave an informative talk and welcomed our questions.

After we re - grouped for our meeting, the minutes were read by Sister Mary Sebestik ,in the absence of Secretary Alice Roberts. Vicki Kohn made the treasurer's report.

Membership Chairman Bertha Malik reported that Frances Sparks made a donation for stamps.

Helen Vrla, Jr. read correspondence from Frances Konakovsky, who sent a Christmas card and note of thanks for the flowers brought to her, a Christmas card and thank you from the Sedlacek family, a Christmas card from Berta Paryzkova, thank you from the S.P.J.S.T Rest Home No. II for our donation in memory of Christina Zemanek, thank you from the Ronald McDonald Home, thank you from the American Legion for our donation in memory of Sister Toberny, thank you from the Meals on - Wheels, acknowledgement for the brick our Circle purchased for the State Fair's Sesquicentennial and a letter from the Statue of Liberty Fund Raising Committee.

Sunshine Chairman Adelle Vlk sent get well cards to Marie Kowal and Suzanne Novak, a gift was also sent to Suzanne who was in an automobile accident, a sympathy card was sent to Liddie Pavelka, and Libbie Elsik sent get well cards to Alice and Tom Roberts.

Greetings were relayed from Sisters Alice Roberts, Theresa Carper, Hattie Ground, Lillian Graeser, Irene Halouzka, Mary Nesuda and Mildred Chervenka.

Birthday Card Chairman Bessie Kalich mailed ten birthday cards for January birthdays and eleven in February.

Bessie Reames reported the Czech Cultural group will meet February 18 at the Catholic Czech Club and the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council February 17 at the Sokol Dallas with SPJST Lodge No. 130 hosts.

Arnold Vrla, who is in charge of the souvenir book for the Sesquicentennial year, explained the different size ads we could purchase. It was agreed we take out a $50 ad and dedicate it in memory of our deceased members.

There will be a museum project, also, that we were asked to contribute towards, but it was voted we not contriubute since we do so much during the year already.

Bertha Podhrasky announced that Moostach Joe Band will be playing at the Dallas Sokol Hall, February 15th.

Dorothy Reznik presented the framed document of the Statue of Liberty to President Zvolanek so that it can be displayed.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our January and February celebrants.

Door prizes this month, donated by Ann Zvolanek and Alice Roberts, were won by Zdenka Skotak and Adelle Vlk. Sister Marie Fitz surprised me with a friendly call and said how much she enjoyed the little quotation I put in my last letter and that she would be enjoying a stay in California. We missed her at our meeting.

In closing let me wish all of the people who are on the sick list a speedy recovery. Last month, my dad was in the hospital with a heart attack and a week later my brother, Robert Urban, was in the hospital after being in a head - on auto collision. He is lucky to be alive!

American-Czech CS Undertakes Huge Project The American - Czech Culture Society is composed of Czech fraternal societies, and Czech mutual insurance associations; namely, CSA, KJT, KJZT , RVOS, SPJST, SVPS, WFLA, American Sokol Organization, Catholic Czech Club, Circle of Czech Women and the Historical Society of the Czech Club.

We have been sponsoring a "Czech Day" at the State Fair of Texas since the early 1950s. This year- 1986 - there is something very special, "The Texas Sesquicentennial" - something that can only happen once in every 50 years.

We are planning a three - day celebration - Octotber 3, 4 and 5, 1986 with a "Souvenir Program Book."

This will be a collector's item and every citizen or business will be proud to have their name published in it for future generations to see and read.

Junior College Immediate News Release Temple

TEMPLE - Temple Junior College will serve as a center to promote and coordinate Czech - related publications in cooperation with the Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) during the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial year.

TJC will assist TOCA in the coordination and publication of materials related to Czech heritage.

"We are very proud to be associated with TOCA in this project," Dr. Marvin R. Felder, college president, said. "TJC is committed to the project as long as the Czech community feels such a relationship will aid in the preservation and promotion of Czech culture."

TOCA is an independent organization encouraging Texans of Czech ancestry as well as all Czech groups and organizations to join in the celebration of Texas' 150th birthday.

Both TOCA and TJC have been sanctioned as Texas Independence for the Texas Associations Sesquicentennial.

"We encourage the Czechs of Texas to research what Czech Texans have done and what they are doing in the different communities throughout Texas," Jerry Valchar, TOCA executive director, said. "We specifically encourage individuals, families and organizations on the community level to sponsor some research or other appropriate activities during this Sesquicentennial year."

The TJC/TOCA project will be directed by Dr. Gwen Hauk with Calvin Chervenka as a consultant.

Both are members of the TJC faculty.

The project will serve as a clearing house for Sesquicentennial projects relating to Czech heritage. "We will advise and offer assistance to anyone who is associated with the TOCA project and wishes to publish Czech -

related materials," Dr. Hauk said.

"The college faculty and staff will offer limited editorial assistance, technical advice and graphics assistance on a voluntary basis."

Facilities at the TJC Media Center also will be available for printing materials on an at - cost basis. All projects must be approved by the TOCA organization before being submitted to TJC for publication. The cost of publishing materials will be borne by the author of the project or his sponsor. The Hubert M. Dawson Library at TJC will build a Czech collection for reference and research and will receive one complimentary copy of each publication approved for the project.

To encourage and assist individuals and organizations in getting started with a project, a handbook has been printed for statewide distribution. One thousand copies of the "Modus Operandi of the Texan Ceskeho Puvodu," a handbook for the Texas Sesquicentennial, are now available to Czech families and organizations throughout the state. The Farmers Protective Association Mutual (RVOS) provided funds for publication and distribution of the handbook.

The Modus Operandi contains suggestions for many different types of Sesquicentennial projects and activities as well as information on how to get started. The information was originally prepared by Albert J. Blaha, Sr., of Houston and was revised as edited by Calvin Chervenka.

The projects and activities section of the handbook contains suggestions for many types of Sesquicentennial projects and activities for individuals as well as groups. Suggested projects include histories of communities or settlements, families, schools, churches, lodges, and other groups; commemorative historical markers; commemorative register of Czechs; collection, study, preservation, and revival of customs, traditions, and art forms; commemorative, revisions, reprints, and reissues of books, recordings, and other documents; cemetery inventories; inventories of occupations, interests, and talents, and other research projects. Festivals and celebrations, as well as meetings, conferences, and symposia also are suggested.

The handbook is one way TOCA is encouraging the younger generations of Czech Texans to learn more about their cultural heritage. "Although certain social aspects of the Czech heritage in Texas are very strong, assimilation and acculturation are taking their toll, and we need to acquaint our younger Czech Texans with the proud history and great accomplishments of their Czech forefathers," Valchar said. "We might adopt as our goal the phrase, "getting to know ourselves."

The next project under the TOCA/TJC agreement will be the publication of a bibliography of available Czech materials compiled by Calvin Chervenka. The bibliography will be a resource for people doing historical research. Chervenka spent several months researching and compiling information for the bibliography.

Class In Victoria College Czech

The Victoria College registrar, Louise Hume, states that 14 students have enrolled in the second semester or Advanced Czech class. The instructor

is Mr. T. Polasek who is also a teacher in Flatonia. The classes are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays.

The beginning class in the fall of 1985 had 42 students and ended with 35, all of whom passed.

This Czech class was established through the cooperation of Victoria College and the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society.

A Sesquicentennial Bands And Res:I/Won:Rededication Orchestras Of Texas To Our Ancestors' Joe D. Janak, Jr. and Joseph Pustka, of the Victoria County Czech Culture Heritage Society and the Czech Czech

Heritage Society of Texas, are compiling a history of Texas Czech Bands and orchestras. This is to cover the period from 1860 to the present time and is to be published during this Sesquicentennial year.

They are encouraging Czech bands and orchestras or descendants of members of these groups to write a summary or history. This is to include how and when they were started, names of the members, instruments played and where these groups performed. Also needed is a record of the groups achievements and awards, and at what outstanding events did they play. If the group wrote and recorded any songs, the names of such are needed.

The history is to be typed on 81/2' x 11' white paper. If pictures are available, they should be included. All pictures will be returned, if so requested.

Information must be received by May 31, 1986 and is to be mailed to Joe D. Janak, Jr. at 108 East Forrest Street in Victoria, Texas 77901.

Mass At Moravia

There will be a Czech Mass at the Ascension of Our Lord Church in Moravia (Lavaca County), Texas April 13, 1986. The Mass, celebrated by Bishop John Morkovsky, will begin at 10:30 a.m. The Mass and program for the day are in honor of Blessed Agnes of Bohemia.

Following the Mass a barbecue lunch will be served. The cost of the tickets for the lunch will be $5 for tickets that are picked up and $5.25 for mail order tickets. The meal is catered, therefore, we must know the exact number of people coming for the meal.

Each American in Europe misses American comforts and conveniences.

Between the exhausting transatlantic flight, the change in time and numerous other inconveniences there are probably few tourists who regret their return to American soil. The Czechs say, "Vsude dobre, doma nejlepe." it's nice everywhere, but it's best at home.

It may take a little patience for American tourists to adjust to life in Czechoslovakia. For one thing, the food is different. This nation of beef eaters might be a little surprised at traditional Czech fare. Social customs are different, also. A visitor removes his shoes before entering a home or apartment. I tried to explain to my hosts that we Americans don't have time for such a custom. My hosts were quite surprised that I would even consider walking into their dens or kitchens with my shoes on. And then there's the language barrier. Relatively few Czechs there are fluent in English.

Unless an American travels with a tour group it is a matter of sinking or swimming with what Czech he knows or does not know.

With a small amount of patience even the most egocentric American tourist can adjust himself to these cultural differences. Life in Europe and behind the Iron Curtain is simply a little different from what many Americans are used to. We Americans are conscious that our political system is the most democratic in the world and we are proud of the economic opportunities we enjoy in the United States; yet, this sometimes leads us to the mistaken conclusion that American culture is superior to any other.

I spent several weeks in Czechoslovakia in 1985. One of the most painful memories of my trip took place on the flight from Dallas to Frankfurt. I sat beside a woman from Oklahoma. She was accompanying one of her friends to the Soviet Union.

The son of this woman's friend was to receive medical treatment in Moscow.

I felt sorry for the lady beside me. Her only defense at being confronted with anything foreign was to ridicule the person or object in a loud and obnoxious manner. She was alternately amused and offended by the pilot, the flight attendants and the German language they sometimes used. As we finished the dinner served us, she self - righteously grabbed the portion of hard rye bread which had been served with the meal, wrapped it in a napkin and stuck it in her purse.

She turned to me laughing and explained that she would show this piece of bread to her husband, Roy, when she returned from Moscow in three weeks. Her sensibilities had been deeply outraged by this encounter with a foreign culture in the form of a piece of hard rye bread. We parted in Frankfurt and wished each other a

8/VESTNIIK—Wednesday, February 26, 1986 happy journey. I'm curious what she thought about Moscow. She had been amazed that I would want to visit Czechoslovakia. I doubt that she knew what continent Czechoslovakia lies on but she was nevertheless somewhat suspicious of the motive for my trip.

I've found that one of the greatest difficulties for an American in Europe is the rude behaviour of his fellow countrymen.

Not long ago, I read an article which summed up my own feelings about my visit to Czechoslovakia. This article was written by John Righetti, an American who, in 1983, visited the former capital of Czechoslovak Ruthenia, Uzhorod. John Righetti wrote in the Spring 1985 issue of CARPATHO - RUSYN AMERICAN: "The sun had risen only a short time before I first laid eyes on the Carpathian Mountains. The radio on the train was playing folk music as I' looked out over the land of my heritage -- cold and misty, just as I had always imagined it would be. I watched the people in the village as we passed through, saw their faces, their farms, their cupolaed churches tucked among their mountains. • I was overcome with an emotion so deep that mere words cannot express the feeling.

I cried. How was it that an American man felt as though he had come home?

What was it about this place, a place that, until now, had only filled my romantic imagination? I knew these churches, these mountains, these faces. And each of these faces said to me: 'Brother, welcome home!'

Walking through the streets I was amazed by the people's faces. They were the same faces of my neighbors, the kids I went to school with, the people I worked with. They were the faces of the Slavic - American immigrant and his progeny. It was striking to see the similarities. Indeed, a few times the resemblances were so shocking that I thought I was walking past an old friend. And perhaps I was, in a sense.

I was awakened to the fact that I felt more at home there, in a foreign land, than I did in the homes of some of my friends and acquaintances who grew up in the popular American culture.

As I met more and more people, I made the correlation that they were people raised with the same moral code and values that I had been raised with.

I discovered that I grew up more in their culture than in an 'American' one."

I cannot describe my own impressions from my visits to Czechoslovakia any better than this.

Although I was outraged at the political and religious oppression in Eastern Europe, the positive impressions outweighed the negative.

The political situation there has thus far not destroyed the social fabric of that society. I immediately recognized in that society the source of our own Czech - American culture. Like Mr. Righetti, I felt at home there.

1 have enormous faith in the Slavic populations of Eastern Europe. If we are discouraged by the present political situation there we should recall that the Slovaks survived 900 years of Hungarian rule and the Czechs and Mora vians survived centuries of ruthless Germanization which culminated in Hitler's Nazi Reich.

Since such remarks as these will hie\ hably attract criticism from some individuals within our Czech inerican community, after praising the people of Czechoslovakia and their folk culture,I wish to comment on the patriotic obligation of our Czech -

American community. I have little sympathy for those who consume all their energy condemning the political situation in Czechoslovakia without lifting a finger to try to bring about some type of change for the better. All too, often in recent years, the situation in Eastern Europe has been used as an excuse for doing nothing and not having to reach into our own pockets to offer aid to this cause. If we think back to 1938 and 1948, when Czechoslovakia was awarded first to Hitler and then to the Soviets, I think we Americans will feel some shame.

Are we Americans and we Czech Americans a little bit to blame for the present situation in Czechoslovakia?

At any rate, if any American is truly concerned about this situation, I suggest that he seek ways to help the people there and try to work towards a change for the better. Many Czechs are convinced that the Iron Curtain will not stand till eternity. However, from many cruel historical lessons foisted upon the people of Czechoslovakia, they have been taught that the super powers of the world adhere to no moral guidelines when it comes to plotting Czechoslovakia's future.

My recollections of my visits to Czechoslovakia have come to me as we Texans of Czech - Moravian descent celebrate the prepare to Sesquicentennial of our State's Independence. On one hand this celebrations offers us an opportunity to reaffirm our pride and allegiance to out state and nation. 1 also believe that this should be an occasion for our community to re-evaluate the importance of our ethnic heritage.

We are aware that our Czech Moravian community in Texas has always stressed its allegiance to this state and nation. Unlike some other ethnic and racial groups, our community has never sought to advance its own goals above those of the rest of the general population. It might even be suggested that our community has sometimes been too eager to subordinate its own needs to the needs of the rest of the population.

For younger generations of Czech Moravians in Texas, the desire to subordinate our own community's interests and the lack of interest in defending the particular needs of the Czech - Moravian community in Texas could be viewed as an expression of feelings of inferiority. I would like to note here that any feelings of inferiority about our culture were not imparted by our immigrant ancestors.

They were transmitted from "patriotic" Americans.

My personal wish for the Sesquicentennial celebration in Texas is that our community will strive to learn more about its ancestors' heritage and will strive to strengthen its ties to this culture. The most striking change in our community in the past 50 years is that so many elements of our ancestors' culture have been lost and abandoned. It would be well if our various fraternal and cultural organizations in Texas could strike a middle ground and seek with equal effort to preserve our Czech culture and to advance other American patriotic and humanitarian causes. We see, however, that this "middle ground" erodes with each generation.

We find that any organization which attempts to devote equal energies to the preservation of Czech culture and the advancement of other goals is consumed more and more by the more "pressing" interests of these other goals. We might consider whether more of our energies should be directed towards the perpetuation of our ancestors' heritage and less of

these energies directed towards efforts which ultimately insure total assimilation into American culture and loss of our cultural identity.

The strength of our nation lies in its ethnic diversity. The beauty of our political system is that we have the freedom to acclaim this diversity. No American has ever aided his nation by espousing a mindless, unfeeling patriotism based on distrust of other cultures. Any American who promotes a mindless and hateful patriotism based on fear of ethnic diversity does an injustice to our Czech - Moravian community in Texas; to ourselves, to our children and to our pioneer ancestors. Let us hope that contempt for ethnic diversity will never be expressed under any guise or under any cloak of "patriotism" by any of our Czech organizations in Texas.

Pride in America and pride in our political system will never be perpetuated by any movement based on hatred or mistrust of any cultural heritage. The truest patriotism is shown by those who accept the challenges and responsibilities of our political system. It is more beneficial for our nation and hence more "patriotic" for us to learn about and seek to perpetuate America's ethnic heritages than it is for anyone to wave a flag with the ulterior motive or stamping out any culture that is not white, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant.

We must never lend our community to those who espouse a patriotism which seeks to destroy our ancestors' culture. Perhaps some of our Czech American organizations will choose in the future to adopt a profile which they perceive as increasingly "patriotic" and concentrate less on their interest in their Czech heritage.

Perhaps some in our community feel some stigma attached to a Communist regime ruling in their ancestors' homeland. Never mind that the citizens of Czechoslovakia, our blood kin removed by only a few generations, have no say in this matter.

Perhaps others of our community feel less comfortable as "Czech " and feel more secure as simply "American." I suggest to these individuals that they find outlets for their ideas and energies other than our existing Czech American organizations. Our organizations must remain dedicated to the preservation of our ancestors' language and heritage. This is in the interest of these Czech - American organizations, for none of these organizations has any future if it abandons its Czech cultural identity.

We also do our nation a service by remaining committed to our ancestors' cultural heritage. We strengthen our nation by promoting ethnic diversity.

Our Czech - Moravian community in Texas is balanced today in a precarious position. Shall we assimilate completely or shall we retain our true cultural identity? I suggest that our community in this Sesquicentennial year resolve to look back to the roots of our heritage and rededicate ourselves and our community to our ancestors' cultural heritage.

Easter Celebration Celebration of the Easter holiday continues to be quite elaborate, but not the same as in days of old.

In the early days of the Czech settlements, Smrtelna nedele, the Sunday two weeks before Easter, was observed with a special ceremony. A "Goddess of Death" was-constructed from a doll's head, a pole and ribbons.

Then a group of boys and girls, each holding the end of a ribbon, would

travel from house to house, singing a song which began "Smrt lesem za lesem" (Death in the Woods Beyond Woods...") The residents of the houses would give the singers eggs, cakes and money and other little gifts.

Then, as Easter Sunday approached, a series of washing ceremonies was practiced by some families. Anyone who washed his feet in a stream on Maundy Thursday was not supposed to get sick for an entire year. On Good Friday, girls got up before sunrise to wash their faces in cold water; it was supposed to make them pretty. On Easter Sunday, it was traditional for the boys to wash the girls' faces. On the following Monday, the girls washed the boys' faces Another custom observed on this Monday, apparently much rarer than the washing of faces, was for the boys to make willow whips and switch the legs of their favorite girls. The girls could switch the boys on the following day.

A very common tradition among the Czechs in olden days was the giving of the kraslice (decorated egg) and Easter Egg Hunts on Easter Sunday. This custom is still practiced today throughout Texas. ***

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 66, Waco YC Makes Memorial Donation Dear Youth Members, Our youth meeting was held February 16, with 21 members present.

We had 2 new members to join our club. Welcome to Candace Pavlicek and Chris Pavlicek.

Each youth decorated a Valentine box and filled it with something good to eat. The boxes were judged on decoration and what was on the inside.

Our judges were Dorothy Moore and Lil Cox. In age group 6 to 12, our 1st place winner was Greg Nors, 2nd -Ashley Locke, 3rd -- Denise Kofnovec, 4th -- Sheri Kofnovec. In age group 13 to 17, our 1st place winner was Donna Stanislav, 2nd -- James Yates, 3rd -Larry Yates. All boxes were drawn for door prizes at the adult meeting.

The youth gave the Libbie Parma Trust Fund $15 in memory of Silas Smith. We all loved him and will miss him very much.

The youth voted to buy cookie sheets as a gift for the mother lodge; we appreciate all you have done for us.

At our March meeting, each youth is to decorate an Easter egg and we will have judges to judge them. There will also be an Easter egg hunt after the lodge meeting.

The youth has changed its meeting time from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. We would like all youth members of Lodge 66 to come to our meeting.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club Activities Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club meeting was called to order by President Loree Kovar Wednesday, February 5, 1986 at 6:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all present.

Snook will have the Sesquicentennial parade April 19, 1986 which will be a fun treat for everyone.

The events include parade, food booths, games , barbecue lunch , softball tournament, etc. More information at a later date.

The Valentine party at New Tabor was reported fun.

The chili and chicken noodle soup at the Snook Brethren Church had a super turnout. Thank you, Donna, for the program it was really a lot of fun.

Our next meeting is set for March 5th at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 24, Cyclone YC Plans Activities Dear Readers, The SPJST Lodge No. 24 Youth Club held its monthly meeting February 11, 1986 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Craig Waits and Tracey Chervenka.

Our president and vice president were unable to attend the meeting, so our secretary, Kim Schneider, conducted our meeting.

Present were 24 members, 1 visitor, Ronson Pechal, 2 mothers, Mrs. Judy Jeske and Mrs. Bruggman, and we also had a very special guest, our State Youth Director Sue Meadows.

After roll call, the secretary read last month's minutes. Then we held a moment of silence for our departed member, Denise Posvar.

Treasurer Kim Schiller read her report. We had $314.42 in the treasury fund.

There was no old business so we went into new business; we, discussed the District II skating party which was held February 16 at Skate Haven in Temple. Our youth club was well represented with a good attendance.

Also, under new business, a discussion was held concerning an Easter party. We will have it March 23. We will probably have a weiner roast. We may even have a hayride.

We will learn more about this event at our March meeting.

Our money - making project will be a barbecue. It will be held April 27th.

Our meeting adjourned around 8:15 p.m.

Before our Valentine party, the State Youth Director called the youth out into the mother lodge meeting.

Mrs. Meadows presented me with a very nice camera for receiving first place in the 13 - 14 age category in the

Design Contest. I was very surprised.

It was quite an honor to receive this special prize.

Door prizes were won by Brent Vanicek and Christy Marek.

We also have two new members, Jeffrey Posvar and Zachery Schneider.

We welcome you to our youth club.

Birthday celebrants in February are Tracey Chervenka (February 13), and Craig Waits (February 24). Happy Birthday to both of you!
