In this issue, in the English and in the Czech Sections, are urgent notices from Professor Jos. J. Skrivanek Jr., president of The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) concerning a very important meeting which will be held at the Supreme Lodge building in Temple Saturday, March 1st at 1 p.m. There will be speakers from both Texas A&M University of College Station and University of Texas in Austin present to represent those two universities and speak to all attending. PLEASE read the two articles carefully.

Dr. John M. Skrivanek was the person who instigated the founding of CEFT; he called a meeting at Texas A&M University and a large group met to discuss establishing a fund to establish a "Chair" for the purpose of teaching the Czech language, either at Texas A&M University or the University of Texas.

There were five of us from Houston who attended (mentioned before in these columns), namely -- Dr. Henry Maresh and Brothers Skrabanek, Valcik, L. Kucera and your editor.

There were $100 to $1,000 donations made that night and anyone who donated $100 or more was named a director. The first officers were President -- J.M. Skrabanek, Vice President -- Rev. Joseph A. Barton, and Secretary/Treasurer -- Dr. John M. Skrivanek; the three officers are all deceased. The following were the original founding officers and directors. (Those whose names are followed by an asterisk (*) are also deceased; namely, J.M. Skrabanek(*), Rev. Joseph A. Barton(*), Dr. John M. Skrivanek(*), R.J. Bartosh(*), F.K. Bucek (*), Chas. Holasek(*), August Kacir(*), Vladimir Malec(*), Edward L. Marek(*), Jos. V. Maresh(*), Msgr. A.W. Nesvadba(*), I.C. Parma(*), Ben Prevratil(*), Emil W. Schovajsa(*), Dr, John J. Shiller(*), J.J. Professor Jos. J. Skrivanek Jr. took his brother John's active role Upon John's death and acted as secretary/treasurer until 1985 when he was elected by the remaining directors for the president's position. The old proverb says: "Strike while the iron is hot" holds true also in this case. Let us have a large representation of all!

Now, in this Sesquicentennial year of Texas is our good chance; if we lose that chance, it, very likely, will never appear, again.

WE CANNOT lose if all Czech organizations and citizens support this effort Let us leave something for our future generations and for our Czech Heritage and Culture! With everyone's support, it can be done! be proud of your Czech ancestry!

(The above are words Professor Skrivanek mentions in his letter.) *** "I'll lose weight in 1986" -- How many times have you heard that last December and this January? You may be one of the multitude in our health conscious society who made this resolution for 1986, and, depending on a number of factors, you may succeed in your goal. But then the hard part starts. Unfortunately, only about 2 percent of those who lose weight keep the weight off for at least five years.

Over a lifetime, a person can lose thousands of pounds just dieting a few times a year. We are great at losing weight in this country, but terrible at keeping it off. Why? Because crash diets do not work, writes Ann Landers. Choose a diet and exercise program that is easy to live with over the long haul for lasting results.

We are creatures of pleasure, not pain. The weight loss program that is difficult or unpleasant is doomed. Set long - term and short - term goals and target dates for reaching both. Instead of stating vaguely that you want to get more exercise, your goal might be better stated, "I am walking 30 minutes each day at noon and it's adding relaxation and exercise to my life."

(1) Do not forbid your favorite foods -- moderate them . By substituting lemon juice for the two. tablespoons of tartar sauce you might put on a fish fillet, you could have half a cup of your favorite ice cream.

(2) Include exercise in your weight loss program. Exercise not only burns calories, it makes you feel better. It's good for the heart, the blood pressure, digestion, complexion and skin tone, and it generates energy.

(3) Be sure your exercise is aerobic.

Strength - building exercises (e.g. weight - lifting, push - ups, sit - ups, etc.) are great for toning, but if maximum calorie burning is what you are after, walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and aerobic dance are the best and most enjoyable ways to go about it.

(4) Include plenty of fiber in your diet. Foods high in fiber, such as whole - grain cereals and breads, and fresh fruits and vegetables, provide feelings of fullness in a low - calorie way and also reduce the body's absorption of dietary fat. Enough fiber can subtract some of the other calories you eat by nearly five percent.

(5) Remember that frequency is more important than length of time when you exercise. In one experiment, aerobic dancers who worked out three times a week for 30 minutes lost nearly twice as much body fat as dancers who worked out twice a week for 45 minutes. Exercise also helps, to suppress appetite; check with your personal physician.

Newsbrief William Matous, 83, died Friday morning, Februay 14, 1986 in the King's Daughters Hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Seaton Brethren Church. He was a lifelong resident of East Bell County, however, he had resided in Temple for the past year. Brother Matous was the father of Norma Alford, assistant to SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard Gebala.

District V Meeting The District V spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 9, 1986, at Lodge 142, Houston.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek, secretary, read the roll call of officers and sales representatives. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved and the correspondence included a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar regarding the photography contest and a letter from VP Bernie Gebala asking that the youth leader become a sales representative to enroll the youth who will become members of the youth club, lodge and Society, also. Four members, Brothers Albert Hejl and John Kohut and Sisters Ella Macek and Lillie Mikulas,will be presented 50 - year pins Sunday, April 6th. More details, later.

New members approved and welcomed into the lodge were Michele Langford, Brian A. Vanicek, Andrea M. Paruzinski, Dorothy A. Kohutek, Martha Marie Dubcak, Kristopher R. Stuchly, Daniel R. Kuban, Billy R. Parish and Pauline W. Childers. A warm welcome to each named and try to come to our meetings which are of interest to all.

Those who were reported on the sick list since the last meeting included Brothers Robert Heese, Albert Mihatsch, Edwin Jez, Charlie Marek, Herman Hester, Clarence Sula, Leo Kahlig and Edwin Chlapek. We are hoping that better health has returned to each named.

In the president's report, Brother Pechal reported on the guard light that is to be installed soon, workmen's compensation is increasing by 2 percent in October, renewal of beer license, the Mistrinanka Band is still uncertain to come to Seaton because the contract was not received; and he called for a special board meeting after the meeting, regarding the condition of the dance floor.

Treasurer Sister Lucy Mihatsch gave the January report, as did Sister Adeline Kohutek, financial secretary, and she also read the trustees' meeting minutes.

Youth Leader Rosie Craft stated that 20 members and 3 visitors were present. Three new members were enrolled in the youth club; namely, Jennifer Pechal, David Koslovsky and E.J.Pechal. Happy Birthday, David!

The youth club members were busy making Valentines to take to the residents of Southland Villa Nursing Home Sunday, February 9th, where they also will serve punch and other refreshments to those present.

The skating party sponsored by DYC Frank Klinkovsky will be held at Skate Haven February 16th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Be there!

The chairpersons' reports were all good. I, as ticket chairperson, thanked Brother Alfred and Sister Klusacek for taking care of the dance for Jerry and me Saturday, January 11th when we went to a funeral for Jerry's uncle, Brother Raymond Matulik, Sr. of Groves, a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone. The 565 - mile round trip was enjoyed by all who went (10 of us) because we met the immediate family and many former Bell County residents who live in the Port Arthur area. I had received a newsletter "LIFE at Beaver Crossing, Nebraska" and read two paragraphs that had described the visit of Ardis and Lloyd Tesar of Nebraska and Doctors Delbert and Rogene Tesar of Austin to

a dance at Seaton Star Hall in December. Lloyd Tesar had a birthday that day and a special polka was played for him and when we drew for the door prizes, Ardis was the winner of two dance tickets. They will come back to another polka dance! We met them personally because at intermission they came to the display room and we talked to them and explained the things that they asked about; looking forward to both couples coming back to Star Hall.

DYC Frank Klinkovsky reminded all of the skating party. I wonder if he will have pillows for the "amateur" skaters because all were invited to come and join the skaters or just watch.. Also, the District II spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 16th at Lodge No. 18, Elgin. More details as the time draws nearer.

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek gave some highlights on the proposed changes at the Supreme Lodge that were discussed in their last board meeting. The Sesquicentennial Fest is scheduled for Sunday, June 8 at the Mayborn Convention Center sponsored by the Supreme Lodge. Be watching the Vestnik for more details as they are available.

Birthdays observed by members in January were Sisters Vallie Tupy, Lillie Cervenka, Annie Chupik, Eleanora Spanhel, and Helen Janacek and Brother Eugene Hejl; also Freddie Schroeder, a visitor.

Wedding anniversary celebrants were Nick and Dorothy Morris, Tim and Claudette Reese, Bill and Rosie Craft, Frank and Ruth Janacek.

Brother Nick Morris spoke on the East Bell County History he is working on and also he made a motion that a committee be appointed on the feasibility of having a lodge picnic sometimes this year. On that committee are Dan Balusek, Woodrow Marek, Ruby Bolton, Annie Hejl and Nick Morris. Brother Frank Hejl spoke briefly on the membership status of our lodge and the fine reports that we have given by the officers.

After the meeting was adjourned, we all enjoyed some delicious stew made by Brother Willie E. and Sister Adeline Kohutek, January kitchen persons. Homemade bread was baked

by Adeline, an abundance of cakes plus coffee, in addition to the 30 minute period for free drinks. Don't you wish you had been there?

The next meeting is going to be Sunday, March 2nd at 2 p.m. Will see you then if the creeks don't rise, as the old expression goes. This last Monday the rain was measured from 3 inches to 7 and 9 inches in the area. Creeks rose to heights that weren't remembered by many folks. 74, Lovelady Approved Numerous Donations Lodge

The regular meeting of Lovelady Lodge No. 74 was held Monday night, February 10th at 7:30 p.m.

All reports were approved and the assembled members were in a generous mood, naming the following organizations to receive donations

from Lodge 74 in the near future; all the local and surrounding fire departments, namely, Grapeland, Latexo, Crockett, Kennard, Weches, Pennington, Austonio, Weldon, Porter Springs and Lovelady; also S.P.J.S.T Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville, the Emergency Medical Service and Crime Stoppers.

The members voted to buy a "Lifeline" at the Houston County Hospital, to sponsor two little league baseball teams; and to pay an extra $10,000 on our Lodge No. 74 note.

The goal the members are working for now is to pay our lodge note off as soon as possible. Then when the economy is bad, we won't have to worry about paying a building payment.

We all appreciate Mardell White for contacting the local commissioner and getting our street to the lodge repaired.

On the sick list, whom we know of are Matt West and Mrs. Silvenna Michka. We wish both of them a speedy recovery.

Lodge 74 Youth Club participated in the Lovelady Love Fest Saturday, February 8th. Lodge member Linda Kosmototos was crowned queen and her escort was Scott McKenney. We are always proud of our youth in all of their endeavors.

Lodge 88 Houston News

Our twenty - first anniversary celebration Sunday, February 9th was a great success despite the bad weather. The baked - chicken dinner, prepared by Sister Annie Vala and Brother Henry Kite with all their able helpers, was delicious. Our Czech Concert Orchestra was enjoyed; they played during the lunch hour in the ballroom. The active youth club, under the leadership of Sister Marie Stayton, was busy as little beavers clearing the tables. This is always a thankless and not very glamorous chore, but the kids went right at it with big smiles and friendly greetings to all.

We thank them for a job well done.

After the bingo session, the Bobby Jones Band played for a nice - sized crowd. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar with first lady, Mary, and two sons, came from Temple to help celebrate. Brother Howard visited with everyone and I hope he enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed having him and his family participate in our activities.

Don't forget the original Telstars play here Friday, February 21st and Bobby Jones comes to the ballroom Saturday, the 22nd.

Manny Green, a local band playing the big band sound music, will appear in the Chandelier Ballroom Saturday, March 1st. Tickets are now on sale in the lodge office. The price is $17 per couple.

Tuesday, February 4th, the ever active Men's Club hosted a stew supper for their wives. Brother Jerry Kolacny, the best little stewmaker in this end of town, cooked the stew and side dishes of rice and black - eyed peas with a little help from Ernest Anders and Ed Miculka. The wives all brought other side dishes so you can imagine the delicious food that was served.

Vice President Ray Hagan's wife, Gladys, was in charge of that part of

the meal and she did a very good job.

The Men's Club President Royal Warnasch welcomed all 25 members and their spouses and later showed slides (of various European countries) which were enjoyed by all. A fun evening was had by all and we're eagerly awaiting the next one. The men have already had three work details this year. They fixed all the tables and chairs (replaced all the missing nuts, bolts and screws), repaired the return air grills, and cleaned the yard and flower beds. They stay busy around the lodge. They stay so busy they don't have time to disagree. They have the right idea.

Our meeting held Sunday was called to order by president Brother Jerry Milan.

Brother Milan made welcome Sister Mary Grubis.

Correspondence was read.

There was a discussion re the Sesquicentennial Czech Exhibit at the State Fair.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland, reported on the youth club and that Saturday they will go to the Arlington Theatre to see "Alice in Wonderland," also Ky Cleveland won first place in the Soap Box Derby in the Eagle Mountain area. The youth club also made a memorial in memory of Brother Donald D. Steinman, Sr. Sister Mary Pavey reported on all get well and sympathy cards sent.

A memorial is being made to the Scholarship Fund in memory of Brother Silas Smith.

Brother Milan presented 50 - year pins to Sisters Jeanie Mason and Mary Pavey. Jeanette (Linda) Krenek was not present.)

It is hard to believe, but it's time to plan for the Easter Picnic with Lodge 154 and Sokol Fort Worth Sunday, March 30th at the Tirk - Alholm Farm at 6805 Pleasant Run Road, Colleyville, Texas; weather permitting.

We are happy to report all the hospital patients are now home and recuperating. Brother Joe and Sister Agnes Merlick are enjoying their daughter Betty Mueller and friend from Miami, Florida and helping take care of Brother Joe. I think she really boosts his spirits. Get well, soon! We also extend our get well wishes to Hattie Havran who is recuperating after having knee surgery and is recuperating in the home of her son, Brother Norland and wife, Sue Havran, at 313 Westview Ct., Longmont, Colorado 80501. Hattie is the sister of Brother Benny Pavey.

Preceding the meeting, Sisters Ella Davis made a big pot of stew, Mary Renfro -- salad, Jeanie Mason -- her famous cornbread and goodies by Anna Johnson and Mary Pavey which were enjoyed by all on a gloomy day.

We missed Brother Joe and Sister Carrie Milan who were at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Sister Merle Kovar was our door prize winner; she was not present.

Our meeting adjourned to dominoes, games and fellowship.

Pasadena Meeting Dear Members and Friends: I hope the new year is a happy one for all of you and that you are keeping many of the New Year's resolutions that some of you made. People make such good resolutions, many of which should be kept. Some of which may be to try to take better care of your health, to try to make better use of your time, to smile more often and to give thanks for our blessings. This list could go on and on and time does not stand still so let's stay awake and aware of all that goes on and try to put in good word when we can.

Our January lodge meeting was well - attended. Our newly - elected president, Brother Jerry Dressler, called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. He welcomed everyone in Czech and English.

He asked us to stand and shake hands with those next to us.

Our second vice president, Brother J.V. Thomas, led us in the Pledge' of Allegiance to the United States flag.

We remained standing for a moment of silence to pay tribute to our departed members.

First vice president, Brother Dan Berry, called for, the roll call of officers. All were present. He-called for the secretary to read the minutes of the last meeting. Minutes were read and approved.

The president read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Brother Howard Leshikar, in which he thanked the lodge for participating in the Statue of Liberty Campaign. It is wonderful that, by so many lodges participating, we have reached and exceeded the $8,100 goal. This shows what can be accomplished by only 10 cents a member or just passing the hat around. We should be proud of this kind of cooperation. The Statue of Liberty had been an inspiration to millions in the past and continues to be an inspiration now and should continue to be in the future.

Last week our lodge was inspected by the City Health Inspector and we were happy to receive such a good report. We are proud of the cleanliness and sanitation of our facilities at our lodge. we hope to continue this way and improve as time goes by.

We were reminded that the District V spring meeting will be held March 9, 1986 at Lodge 142 in Houston; watch the Vestnik for further details.

Our Financial Secretary Demetra Thomas, reported four new certificates to be voted on. They were for Lionel Henry Cote from Pasadena, Ray Richard Rose Jr. from Alvin, Shawn P. Toney from Houston, and April A. Toney from Houston. We are proud to

admit these new members to our lodge.

We regret to report the loss of a longtime member, Sister Esther Mae Barron, who passed away January 5th.

She was a treasurer of our lodge for several years about 9 or 10 years ago.

Our sympathy goes to her family A covered dish social is being planned for March 16th. Watch for further details.

All our committees have been appointed by now.

The Telephone Committee is as follows: Helen Wallace, Alvin Sefcik, Tommy Risinger, Billy Shamberger, Irene Hogan and John Balusek.

Highlights Of Mid-Cities Lodge 183 In Arlington (See photos on page one) Dear Members: There was a very good meal before the meeting. Lambert Pustejovsky made some chili and the rest of the members brought a dessert and everyone had plenty to eat before the business got started. Lambert said that he would make some stew, so all of you members need to mark your calendar and be there. Some of the members who haven't been to our meetings need to attend and see what you are missing.

The members present stood for a moment of silence for SFM Silas Smith, and for George Hubik (Jeanie Rejcek's father). They will be missed by the Society. Our Thoughts and prayers go to their families.

Gracie and I also wish to send our thoughts to Rosie Steinman and family for their loss. Don was a very good friend of mine. I have known him ever since I joined SPJST. All reports, except bingo report, were read and approved.

On the -sick list were Dorothy Adamek and Nina Sanchaz. We wish them well and hope for a speedy recovery.

Daniel read a letter from Supreme Lodge about a photo contest about "Joining Hands to Touch Lives," each lodge can enter one black/white and one color photo. Prizes will be awarded for the best picture; the deadline for entry is May 1st, size at least 3 x 5 and not larger than 8 x 20.

Daniel also read a letter from several Czech societies about the upcoming Czech Day at the Fair and if Lodge 183 would like to place an advertisement in the souvenir book. A motion was made and passed to take a one - half page ad; would like to get a good picture of the lodge to go with it.

Jeanie Roznos, then, read a letter from the Supreme Lodge thanking the members for the donation to the

Statue of Liberty Fund.

New committees were appointed for the upcoming Fraternal Fest in June al Temple; namely, B.J. Hlavaty, Inez Greenlees, and Pat Sill.

Gracie Kneschk and Inez Greenlees are on the Sunshine Committee.

On the Bingo Committee is Harry Musick, chairman, with Inez Greenlees, Jeanie Roznos, Norman Kneschk, and Pat and Robert Sill, helping.

New sales representative for Lodge 183 is Phill Boyle, Jr. All members give him your support and help him to help Lodge 183 grow.

Something' new at lodge meetings started at this meeting: is a door prize to be given away and you have to be present to win. Winner of this month's door prize was B.J. Hlavaty.

Congratulations, so now members, you can see that, you are missing out on a lot of fun and even prizes just, by not coming to monthly meetings.

There was a lot of talk and jokes about the new addition to the Kneschk household; Gracie, and I now have a new Pekinese puppy. Some were saying, it is a sign of getting old when the children are grown up and no longer do what you want them to do, you get a pet that cannot talk back.

I. must tell you about a friend of mine who went to the doctor last week and the doctor told him to take a hot bath before retiring. "But," my, friend said "that's ridulous it'll be years before I retire!' Keep Smiling!

189 Makes Contribution Lodge

Seminar At Wall TX. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will conduct a workshop in Czech Genealogy at Wall, Texas 12 April 1986. This will be held in the Fellowship Building under the sponsorship of the Wall Brethren Church, east of San Angelo, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sandwiches and drinks may be purchased at the seminar for a nominal charge from the ladies of the church.

An invitation is extended to all persons of Czech descent who wish to learn about researching their Czech family history in Texas and Czechoslovakia. There will be talks on various topics related to Czech genealogy research, and books will be available for browsing and purchase.

Also free handouts may be picked up.

Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of the Bryan College Station lodge was held December 8, 1985. Due to the fact that the Christmas parade was scheduled for the same day as our meeting, we had a very short meeting.

The announcement was made by Ace Chlapek of Temple, Texas, who was involved in the selection of key individuals in Czech communities • throughout Texas.

Chlapek said, "The primary job of the area coordinator is to coordinate TOCA Sesquicentennial project activities and to assist in providing the information, motivation and initiative to develop appropriate local projects in each community." He encouraged those desiring more information or interested in project involvement to contact their area coordinator.

"TOCA is an independent organization that will involve thousands of Czech Texans during the Sesquicentennial year" according to optimistic forecast of Jerry Valchar, its Executive director. He emphasized the fact that, "Texans of Czech Ancestry share a rich cultural history and heritage and have contributed much to the rich ethnic heritage of Texas and we want to contribute our efforts to the Sesquicentennial activities. The organization was established to promote and coordinate Czech - related events and activities in Texas during the Sesquicentennial year."

Officials of TOCA further stated that many projects are available for each community. There is something for everyone.

A comprehensive master plan has been provided to each area coordinator. The plan lists numerous projects which include festivals and symposiums, various historical activities and also involves the collection, study, preservation and revival of customs, traditions and art forms.

Czechs Did Their Part In Building The Great State Of Texas We Should Do Our Part For The Texas Sesquicentennial Make your contribution to the Texas Sesquicentennial by compiling your research on your family into a book or pamphlet. Record the fact that your family was and is a part of the great State of Texas.

It does not matter that your research has not been completed. Compile what you now have into a book for your children, other members of your family, and posterity. Give a copy to your local library, the SPJST Library, and other libraries. Bring copies to share at seminars, family reunions, and genealogical meetings. You will be surprised to meet other people who can help you with your missing data!

We are a little late in getting started with our project. Try to get your book printed within the next two months.

Then try to make some revised copies before 1986 is over. Let's get busy. I too will try to compile what I have on the uncompiled branches of my family.

The composition and printing do not have to be fancy. The immediate need is to get your research into the hands of others. In some large cities, the copying can be made in the vicinity of 5 cents a page and binding for about $2.25 a book. Small booklets may be stapled or put into hard covers with Acco fasteners which can be purchased at most business supply stores. People who are genuinely interested in your research will be glad to pay their share of this inexpensive printing and binding. You do not need to print large quantities; ten or twenty books are enough to begin. You can make more when the need arises.

Guidelines For Histories Of Czech Settlements Persons who are preparing the history of their Czech settlements for the Sesquicentennial are urged to follow the guidelines set forth here so that some form of standardization will result:

1. Type neatly on a good grade of 81/2 x 11 white paper, one side, double spaced. Use a new ribbon. Leave a one - inch margin on all four edges.

2. Start with the date of founding of the Czech settlement; specify who the founders were by full name. If possible, give the villages of origin in Czechoslovakia and date of arrival in Texas.

3. Include brief, concise data on: Stores, saloons, halls, schools, banks, churches, beef clubs, meat markets, singing societies, molasses presses, railroad depots, blacksmith shops, cotton gins, corn gristmills and haybaling.

4. Fellow Czech Texans: 1986 will be Texas' Sesquicentennial Year. During this year, starting as soon as possible, Texans of Czech ancestry should think of honoring their heritage, culture and ancestors.

CHS Announces Czech Heritage Festival The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas will present a Czech Heritage Festival in honor of the Texas Sesquicentennial Year Saturday, April 12, 1986 at the Corpus Christi Bayfront Plaza Exhibit Hall from 10 a.m. to midnight. You will enjoy two Czech bands, Czech choral groups, folk dancing and a showing of authentic Czech costumes. Examine cultural displays and browse through booths offering Czech kolache, Czech music selections, cookbooks and much, much more. Always, when the Czechs gather, expect laughter, food, music and dance. The admission will be $2.

CZECH HERITAGE FESTIVAL Apri112, 1986 Bayfront Convention Plaza Corpus Christi, Texas Tradition is that which allows generations to guide important values through the passages of time, and, so. tradition is the purpose of our Czech Heritage Festival in honor of the Texas Sesquicentennial year Saturday, April 12, 1986.

Opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. will include the singing of the National Anthem as well as the Czech National Anthem. Mayor Luthor Jones will proclaim this day as Czech Heritage Day in Corpus Christi.

Examine a large collection of cultural items which depict the Czech family home, religion, family pastimes and decorative arts; also see Czech dolls, jewelry, wood carvings, costumes and glassware.

A beer garden area will provide cold beer. Enjoy Czech kolache (a sweet yeast dough baked to a rich golden brown topped with sweetened fruit), sausage - on - a - stick, and sauerkraut.

Always, when the Czechs get together you expect music and dancing. Two Czech bands, namely, the Leo Majek Orchestra of Corpus Christi and the Rudy Kurtz, Jr. Band of Port Lavaca will provide dance music. The Majek Orchestra will play intermittently beginning at 10:30 a.m.

until 8 p.m. when they will be joined by the Rudy Kurtz Band for a big battle dance until midnight. We'll be dancing the polka, a lively folk dance of Czechoslovakian origin.

Traditional folk songs will be sung by the Corpus Christi Czech Heritage Society Singers, the Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston, and the Houston SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group and Czech Concert Orchestra.

Also see Czech folk dancing performed by the Czech Folk Dancers of West. This group dances with a spirit so free and invigorating, you'll be exhausted just watching them!

Imagine a holiday with all the people dressed in their native costumes with colors so striking in their intensity; all mixed with flowers, laces, ribbons, and exquisite embroidery, and you view the Czech folk dress. Our parade of costumes will give the audience an insight to the origin of some authentic Czech costumes.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood YC Makes Contributions Dear Readers: The Lodge No. 6 Youth Club meeting was held at 2:30 p.m.

February 2 with a fair attendance.

Valentines were made for the West Rest Haven residents by our club members, they will take them to the rest home February 13th. Cakes were also brought to the rest home, February 4th.

Donations were made to the Texas Handicapped, a memorial donation to the West Ambulance Fund, plus other donations.

We worked on crafts, finger puppets and also started working on fire posters.

At our March 2 meeting, we plan to have a kite - flying contest after the

meeting, so everybody come and bring a kite because we always have a lot of fun, sometimes it is either high wind or raining, but we fly the kites anyway.

We will judge the kites on the following entries: Prettiest, oddest, homemade, smallest flying and highest flying. Come out and win a prize.

St. Paul's Sunday School will have their annual "Sweetheart Banquet" February 14th and some of our youth club members, also parents will be attending. After the banquet, our youth plan to go to the hall to have a Valentine party, exchange Valentines and eat snacks.

Our Easter party will be held March 23 (Palm Sunday); the lodge meeting will begin at 1 p.m.; youth club meeting starts at 2:30 p.m., following their meeting, an Easter program will be presented, plus an egg hunt will take place, then supper will be served.

All the youth members, parents, friends, also SYD Sue Meadows, District III YC Bessie Petr, the Supreme Lodge qfficers, Editor Rudy Sefcik and Maxine are invited to attend our Easter party, both meetings, youth program, egg hunt and supper.

The youth club will be selling tickets on Easter items; this will be their money - making project. They also will be making items for the rest home.

February birthday celebrants are Tammie Mynar, Bennie Mynar and Stephanie Mynar. Lanette Hykel brought the decorated Valentine cake, thank you!

Our youth club was invited to a dance at New Tabor Friday, February 7 and several of our club members 'and adults attended. All of us had a big time. We also enjoyed the refreshments. Thanks to the New Tabor lodge for inviting us.

Lodge This group composed of Tammy Machu, Lisa Haag, Sherry Machu, Lori Faltesek, Tonya Holub, and Kimberly Holub were having a good time at the "Lock - in" party held recently at Lodge 29.

The monthly meeting was held Sunday, February 9, 1986. President Ron Randig called the meeting to order.

Vern Anderson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Monica Machu then gave the secretary's report. There were two visitors, one new member, ten adults and 29 members present.

Treasurer Tammy Blahuta gave the treasurer's report.

Our January "Lock - in" was a huge success. There was a lot to eat and drink, also a lot to keep everybody up all night long.

Our February social was the District H skating party; after we skated, we went out to'eat.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting February 2 at the Taiton Community Center.

The program for February was on Valentine's Day and everyone was asked to make a Valentine for the contest. The results were: (6 - 9) -- 1st, Amy Vacek; 2nd, Lenice Kaspar; 3rd, Kristy Vacek. In 10 - 12 was Stephanie Roye. In ages 13 - 17 were: 1st, Marcy Dorotik; 2nd, Jean Dorotik; 3rd, Michelle Srubar.

For craft we made potpourri Valentine hearts.

The meeting was adjourned. Mrs. Elmer Treumer and Mrs. Mary Ann Dluhos served refreshments.

The El Campo - Hillje Youth Club held its monthly meeting February 6, at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room in El Campo.

The meeting was called to order by President Lori Holub. Member Mary Ann Bartos led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Danny Borak and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Darrin Dybala gave the treasury report, called roll and collected dues.

Future events were called to our attention and discussed. Some items discussed were the District VI spring meeting, the skit and door prizes needed for the event, the adult cleanup day, District VI camp and the leaders' training class.

The thirteen present members recognized our two special guests, Mrs. Sue Meadows (SYD), and her husband, Dick Meadows.

Martha Bartos was recognized for her February birthday by the singing of "Happy Birthday."

A special door prize drawing was held. The Valentine prizes included two boxes of candy and a .Valentine keepsake. The winners were: 1st, Michael Marek; 2nd, Patrick Bartos; 3rd, Danny Borak.

During the meeting, Mrs. Meadows judged our February projects. We had made special Valentines to be given to the elderly person of our choice. The winners in ages 6 to 11 were: 1st, Jared Dybala; 2nd, Sharon Borak; 3rd, Martha Bartos. In ages 12 to 17 were: 1st, Kim Kacal, 2nd, Darren Dybala; 3rd, Jody Henderson.

For the next meeting, we will make and decorate original Easter baskets.

After the meeting, we practiced our skit, had refreshments and looked back at the many scrapbooks of previous years.

Our next meeting will be held March 6, at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

30 Youth Club To Meet

Lodge

The next Taiton SPJST Youth Club meeting will be held March 2, at 2:30 p.m. in the Taiton Community Center. State Youth director Sue Meadows will be joining us at this meeting, so we would like as many members and visitors present as possible.

We will be having our Easter egg hunt at this meeting since Easter is in March this year.

The adults will hold their meeting at 1:30 p.m.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister MRS. ERNESTINE A. BLAZEK, 88, of 4238 Brentwood, Corpus Christi, who died Wednesday in a local hospital.

Sister Blazek had been a resident of this community since 1911 and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Blazek of Corpus Christi and Jerome Blazek of Rio Frio, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia (Ray) Kiesel of Corpus Christi; 8 grandchildren; and 14 great - grandchildren.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Friday at the Maxwell P. Dunne Chapel. Funeral mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment followed.

STRACIK, age 69, who passed away Monday, January 6, 1986, in the Diagnostic Hospital in Houston.

Brother Stracik was a supervisor for the Dow Chemical Company for many years before his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Frankie of Angleton; one son, Glenn Stracik of Waco; one daughter, Marilyn Evans of San Diego, California; one sister, Olga Mikeska of Guy; two grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Brother Stracik was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Angleton and the Angleton Lodge 829 AF/AM. Funeral services were held in the church at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 9, with Rev. Ed Waddill officiating.

Private graveside services were held at the WOW Cemetery in Rosenberg. Pallbearers were J. Otto, J. Dujka, J. Mikeska, I. Hammack, J. Evans IV, and S. Chapman.

Arrangements were made by Palms Funeral Home of Angleton, Texas.

Brother Elsik was born June 27, 1923 in Shiner, Texas to the late Joe and Frances Elsik. He was a retired civil service employee and was a farmer and rancher in Harrison at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Harrison Baptist Church where he served as a S‘unday schoolteacher.

Funeral services were held at the Holts Memorial Chapel in Harrison.

Burial followed in Harrison Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gerry Briley Elsik of Harrison; a daughter, Mrs. Francybeth Atchley of Harrison; a stepson, Joe Briley of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; five sisters, Miss Dorothy Elsik, Miss Marie Elsik and Mrs. Fannie Fleeman, all of Victoria, Mrs. Milady Laza of San Angelo, Mrs. Angelyn Malina of Shiner; a brother, Daniel J. Elsik of Victoria; and three grandchilren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mayree Burton Elsik; a brother, Joe Elsik and a sister, Mrs. Lydia Raven.

We, the members of Lodge No. 97, Placedo, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister JO ANN RUBAC, who passed away in a Victoria hospital, January 18, 1986 at the age of 36. She resided in Bloomington.

Sister Rubac was born January 7, 1950, in Hallettsville, Texas. She worked for 13 years as head of Kamin Furniture Store bookkeeping department.

She was a member of the Bloomington United Methodist Church, was a 1968 graduate of Bloomington High School, and a 1972 graduate of Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. She was an active member in American Business Women Association, and a member of SPJST Lodge No 97, Placedo.

Funeral services were held January 21, 1986 at. Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jodie Windbigler and Rev. Barbara McKnight officiating. Burial was in Colonial Gardens Cemetery.

Surviving are her mother, Georgia Sklar Rubac of Bloomington; and a sister, Barbara Nell Rubac of Houston.

Pallbearers were Buddy Kamin, Mose Hill, Mike Newman, John Sharp, Charlie Sklar, Gary Goode and Larry Kronke. were pallbearers Honorary Bloomington High School Class of 1968.

He lived in Corpus Christi for several years. Previously, he had lived in Victoria and Placedo.

Brother Hajek was born June 21, 1901 in Yoakum, Texas to Henry Hajek and Marie Kortlik Hajek. He was a self - employed farmer.

He was a member of Lodge No. 97, Placedo for 42 years.

Rosary was recited at Colonial Langham Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Corpus Christi Cathedral Catholic Church. Burial followed in Memory Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances A. Boiech Hajek of Corpus Christi; two sons, Daniel V. Hajek of Kingsville and David J. Hajek of Corpus Christi; three sisters, Julia Bortel of Inez, Ella Koliba of Victoria and Emma Koliba of Port Lavaca; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

His grandsons served as pallbearers.

Brother Jerry Bucek was born October 11, 1902, near Moravia in Lavaca County, Texas, the son of Edmund and Annie (Hajek) Bucek.

August 6, 1929, he was united in marrige to Milba Steinmann in.

Schulenburg. Brother Bucek was employed by the Farmers State Bank in Schulenburg in 1924 when it opened and served in various positions until he retired in 1974, and continued on the Board of Directors until his death.

Brother Jerry Bucek was an active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, the Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of the Schulenburg Rotary Club and past president of the Southcentral Texas Bankers Association.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 22, at St. Paul United Church of Christ. Rev. Bruce Bergthold officiated at the service, with burial at the Schulenburg City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Melba Bucek; his son, Bill Bucek,and wife, Patricia Bucek of Schulenbwg; his daughter, LaNelle Carriero of Brea, California; grandchildren, Donna Bennett, Cathy Lundquist, David Carriero, Caryn Carriero, Tracy Pinney, Laurie Fielder, Beth Bucek, and Brooke Bucek; and great grandchildren, Sarah Lundquist, Shannon Lundquist and William Chase Fielder.

These awards are prestigious honors very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Sheryl D. Macha, who attends Needville High School was nominated for this National Award by Mr. Jim Petrash, a Science teacher at the school.

Sheryl Danette Macha will appear in the United States Achievement

Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally.

"Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America's history. Certainly United States Achievement Academy award winners should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement," said Dr. George Stevens, Executive Director of the United States Achievement Academy.

The Academy selects UDAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors or other school, sponsors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. Sheryl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph S. Macha and the

granddaughter of Mrs. Selma Bednarek, all of Needville.

The Weather Service launches thousands of radiosondes each year via balloons. At the end of their mission, the instruments parachute back to earth and are supposed to be returned to the service for reconditioning and re - use.

Each package, made of weather resistant material, contains a prepaid mailbag and instructions for its return. *** Sailors braving the winter elements should take care to protect themselves from falling overboard into frigid water. Immersion into water colder than 70 degrees Fahrenheit quickly lowers the body's core temperature.

Hypothermia soon follows, with such symptoms as loss of muscle control, mental confusion and even unconsciousness. The result can be heart failure or drowning. Survival time in cold water can be increased by more than 300 percent by wearing a close - fitting, garment - type foam flotation jacket. Next-best precaution: Wear a more standard personal flotation device so that you don't have to tread water or swim to stay afloat.
