In this issue, there are interesting guidelines for the Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) or Texane Ceskeho Puvodu Sesquicentennial projects. The guidelines are being published in their entirety for our general membership and readers, we hope that many of you will read the articles and refer your inquiries to the people in charge of those certain departments. ***

Thoughtful Gestures...

For today try to live this day only and not tackle all your problems at once. You can do somethings for several hours that would overwhelm you if you felt that you had to keep them up for a lifetime.

Try to be happy for today. What Abraham Lincoln said is true --- that "most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

Today try to adjust yourself to what is and not try to adjust everything to your own desire; take your family, your business and your luck as they come.

Endeavor to learn something useful.

Read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

Today try to do at least one thing you don't want to do --- just for exercise. Don't show anyone that your feelings are hurt. They may be hurt, but don't show it today.

Endeavor to be agreeable on issues that sometimes may not be your idea.

Also act courteously, not find fault, and try not to regulate or improve anyone but yourself.

Just for today try to be unafraid, so you can feel free from anxiety and, therefore, be able to appreciate what is beautiful in daily living. ***

"Hand-y" colds can be prevented -It is that season again. You can't go to a public gathering without being exposed to others with coughs, sneezes and runny noses, so, to protect yourself, should you stay home? No, it would be better to wash your hands frequently, is the medical advice. Cold viruses are spread far more frequently by hand than through the air.

Cold and flu - like diseases account for more lost workdays in this country than anything else, and although cold viruses are very communicable, they can often be avoided.

Frequent handwashing and immediate disposal of dirty tissues prevents the spread of viruses present in nasal secretions and eyes that are rubbed with the hands. Plenty of fluids and bed rest are still recommended.

But what about some of the other cures we've all heard about?

It is true that the most infectious state of a cold is the early stage, so, concern for a loved one in the initial stages of a cold could best be shown with hot soup rather than hugs and kisses. The old saying: Starve a cold, feed a fever is false. The victim of a cold should eat whatever he feels like eating.

One of the best remedies for a cold is chicken soup. Hot soup encourages the nose to slough off the culprit viruses from vulnerable nasal tissues as it increases the flow of the nasal secretions.

Do not try to sweat a cold out. It's better to drink plenty of fluids and get lots of rest once a cold hits. Strenuous exercise to work up a sweat can fatigue an already taxed body.

Remember that smokers get more colds than nonsmokers. Smoking tends to dry the respiratory tract, making it more susceptible to any germ to which it is exposed.

The surest way to catch a cold is to be sneezed upon is false. Handshakes can be even more dangerous. Cold viruses can survive on objects like hands, eating utensils, telephone receivers, and pens or pencils for as long as five days; another reason to wash hands frequently when cold season is at its peak. ***

Texas Medical Association indicates that your health is in your hands. Bad health habits hurt you and your pocketbook. Here are some healthy habits that can lead to a healthier you: Alcohol -- If you drink, use alcohol moderately (no more than two drinks a day). Over - indulgence can lead to alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, and auto accidents (estimates are that at least half of all fatal traffic accidents in Texas each year are related to driving while intoxicated).

Smoking -- Ideally, no one should smoke. Seventy - five percent of all lung cancer is caused by smoking.

Smoking also causes 350,000 premature deaths each year and costs the country $27 billion in medical care.

Smoking has been linked to circulatory disease, increased risk of heart attack, and cancer of the bladder, mouth, and throat. In fact, 30 percent of all cancer is linked to smoking. Curiously, most persons, who smoke would rather not (33 million have already quit). Although quitting may not be easy, it's proven that success pays off: Ten years after stopping, your death rate from lung cancer and other smoking related diseases returns approximately to those of nonsmokers.

Sleep, the amount of sleep needed varies from person to person. Eight hours a night is the general rule, however, what is important is that you find out how many hours are right for you.

Three nutritious meals a day.

Something as simple as eating breakfast may increase the quality and length of your life. Have lunch and dinner at roughly the same time each day. Avoid snacks. They are a dieter's enemy and can ruin your appetite for a regular nutritious meal. Eat a balanced diet. Excess sugar, salt, and fats (in whole milk and fatty meat products) are empty calories and do not contribute to your good health. ***

Newsbrief BroLher William Houdek, 75, a retired businessman of Dallas, passed away February 3, 1986 in a Dallas hospital. Funeral services were held in Ennis at 2 p.m. February 5 in the Keever Mortuary Chapel under the auspices of the SPJST with Rudy J. Sefcik, Vestnik Editor, conducting and also at the graveside services at Crisp Cemetery. Brother Houdek was a member of longstanding in the SPJST having been a member at Lodge 84, Dallas and was the brother of Miss Agnes Houdek (the dedicated and well - known Czech correspondent to the Vestnik continually for 26 years) and a brother, Joe F. Houdek; also two aunts survive.

"SPJST Flexible Protector Plan" Introduced The SPJST officially announced the availability of its Universal Life plan of insurance the "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan" to our membership, January 11, 1986.

Sales representatives representing each district met at the Home Office in Temple for details on how to make this product available to our membership.

The courses were conducted at the Home Office January 11th, 18th and 25th, which trained our sales representatives in "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan" sales.

Approximately two years of research went into the development of this plan and it is felt any member who doesn't get a review of their present plan and what the SPJST now has available could very possibly be losing money. The Supreme Lodge, at its January meeting, set a rate of 10 percent interest credited to the cash value of this certificate (guaranteed through April 30, 1986.)

The Universal Life product the SPJST has introduced is an interest sensitive certificate. This means that the cash value will build at a varying interest rate as declared by the Supreme Lodge at its quarterly meetings. This product like the annuity, will be administratively supported directly by the Home Office. The SPJST insurance product portfolio is shaping into something we can all be extremely proud of. Interest - sensitive products within the SPJST, however, have some points that will need addressing in the future. Due to the fact that interests being paid are current yield, and to be competitive are paid directly to the certificate holder, the local lodge will not receive a refund on interest - sensitive products. The Supreme Lodge, however, is already looking into ways for all segments of our Society to prosper from good management principles that are being perfected. The Supreme Lodge is cognizant that the SPJST is a Society owned by its membership and everything will be done to satisfy all our lodges and membership with not only 'state of the art' insurance programs but fraternal benefits as

well. The SPJST will survive and remain a vibrant organization by adapting to the changing times.

The "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan" is another step by your Society in furnishing you a complete insurance portfolio. (FIC) Counselors Insurance designation. He was well - respected by his fellow Fraternal Insurance Counselors and served two terms as president to the FIC Section of the Texas Fraternal Congress.

I asked Silas once if he felt that not being of Czech ancestry he found it more difficult to get the job done. I remember quite clearly him thinking for a moment or two and then telling me, "I wasn't born a Czech but I'm a Czech by choice." Because of his sincerity and dedication Silas was a thinker. He always weighed everything that was said and gave it a lot of thought. When he and I would have a

difference of opinion to illustrate his confidence that he was right, he would always want "to bet me a load of watermelons."

Silas certainly must have been influenced by his association with Czech people. He loved Czech sausage and, as he traveled throughout the state, he knew where the markets were that made the sausage he liked best. He also loved polka and waltz music. He would tell me: "Anyone who doesn't like this kind of music doesn't know much about music." It's ironic that the last weekend he socialized with his wife he went to a polka dance Saturday at Lodge 130, Dallas and Christmas party and polka dance at Lodge 183, Mid - Cities (Arlington). I know returning home that Sunday he told me he had a great time and that was what the SPJST was all about. He enjoyed polka music to the extent that he had a bumper sticker on his car that read "Polka Power." We teased him a good deal about that.

As I sit here thinking of my co worker "old Bubba" and of all our past experiences that we shared, I want to thank him for being my friend and for what he did and what he felt for the SPJST. Silas Smith was a good, honest, down - to - earth person who loved his wife, his country, his church and this Society. The SPJST will miss his wisdom and counsel. On behalf of our membership, Silas - "thank you."

Smith, 3:30 p.m. with all Supreme Lodge status of legislation that would affect members present: taxation of fraternal benefit societies.

January 25, 1986 we all were shocked when informed of the passing away of our friend and fellow worker, Silas Smith.

Silas served the Society well. As the first state field manager in SPJST history, he set the standards for that position.

Those who attended Brother Smith's memorial service heard Monsignor Mark Deering of Waco state "There aren't many Silas Smiths left on earth." To me that was a fittingly high compliment to pay to Silas and I agree wholeheartedly. The level of dedication Brother Smith displayed to the SPJST cannot be over emphasized.

He gave the SPJST and, in particular, the Insurance Department his total commitment to excellence. He did his best at all times.

During the period of time prior to Joe B. Hejny's death, Silas carried on many of the functions Mr. Hejny was unable to do because of ill health. Silas enjoyed doing his part and more. It seemed to give him a feeling of satisfaction and pride.

When I was appointed by the Supreme Lodge in 1978 to the vice presidency of the SPJST, Silas was a tremendous asset to me and to State Field Manager Gene McBride who also was new at his position. His willingness to share knowledge and ideas helped all of us adjust quickly to the challenges ahead.

MINUTES The minutes of the October 7 7 9, 1985 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and approved.

ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN/VICE CHAIRMAN OF BOARD Director Pokladnik was nominated for position of chairman of the board and was elected by acclamation.

Director Broz was nominated for vice chairman of the board and elected by acclamation.

Each spoke briefly and thanked the Board for their confidence and pledged to serve to the best of their abilities.

REPORTS The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged on motion duly adopted. The reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume 5.

CZECH MUSIC SYMPOSIUM - The "Washington on the Brazos" presentation scheduled for November 14, 15 and 16, 1986 in Bryan was discussed. It was agreed that items from the SPJST museum be displayed at the Sesquicentennial Event with suitable identification for each item displayed.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Several changes in the Scholarship Program were reviewed and approved.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - SYD Sue Meadows presented a report on youth activities and functions and presented recommendations and requests for 1986.

After discussion, the recommendations, changes and requests in SYD Meadow's report were approved.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:10 p.m. until 9 a.m. January 7, 1986.

PRODUCT SUPPORT - The new products the Society will be marketing will need a great deal of technical knowledge and field support.

Preliminary observations indicate that the Society will need area field representatives in those areas that can support the cost from insurance production.

There was a general discussion concerning goals and objectives, plans for future growth and utilization of public relations opportunities.

HISTORIC CHARTER LODGE BUILDINGS - Pictures of a number of the historic buildings were reviewed.

Some were reported to be in poor condition and a bad state of repair.

REQUEST TO ATTEND MEETING - A member who is an FIC had requested authorization and expense reimbursement to attend the NAFIC meeting. After discussion, a motion was adopted to decline the request. SL members and home office staff are those authorized to attend these functions.

PREMIUM REFUND SCALE Report was made that the actuary, John Agee, recommended that the premium refund be left unchanged. A motion approving the recommendation was made, seconded, and carried.

NEW COMMITTEES WERE DESIGNATED AS FOLLOWS: (1) Products Committee Bernard M. Gebala Ben Trcalek Thelma Hrncir Sidney Kacir (2) Fraternal Activities Committee Howard B. SPJST FRATERNAL DAY - The recommendation of the Fraternal Activities Committee was presented and discussed and a motion was adopted authorizing the following: Rental CAC and Convention Center, three bands, buttons, bumper stickers, and meetings of the Fraternal Activities Committee.

The date is set for June 8, 1986.

NEW BUSINESS. TAROKY TOURNAMENT -. It was decided to have a Taroky tournament if an individual is located who is familiar with the game and can manage and supervise a Taroky tournament.

APRIL SL MEETING - The April SL meeting was set for April 9th and 10th.

The directors were scheduled to come in for a 'A day meeting April 8th.

NFCA PRESIDENTS' SECTION President Leshikar was authorized to attend the Presidents' section meeting in San Antonio.

PRESIDENTS' CLUB MEETING Report was made that the SPJST was invited to participate in an association of 15 medium size fraternals and President Leshikar was authorized to accept the membership invitation and was authorized to attend meetings.

DELINQUENT LOANS Recommendations for actions on delinquent loans were considered and approved on motion duly adopted.

Report was made on collection efforts and the longstanding delinquent status of a lodge building loan and a response to the lodge was formulated.

Recess fora the day was taken at 5 p.m. until 9 a.m. January 8, 1986.

MINUTES OF SL OFFICERS' MEETINGS/INVESTMENTS - The minutes of 11 meetings held were investments concerning approved. The list of investments during the quarter was ratified.

LOAN APPLICATIONS, ANNUITIES/UNIVERSAL LIFE The Financial Planning Committee presented its recommendation and the matter of our mortgage loan policy, mortgage rates and interest sensitive products rates were discussed. A motion covering the following was adopted: (1) To continue to consider acceptable loan applications under the rules in force and to decrease the mortgage loan interest rate to 111/4 percent. The interest rate on loans secured by owner - operated commercial properties was set at 121/4 percent.

(2) To set the interest rate for the accumulation period on annuities and universal life at 10 percent for the period from 2 - 1 - 86 to 4 - 30 - 86.

(3) Due to a large amount of funds available, temporarily waive the one year membership requirement until such time that the excess funds are committed, at the discretion of the SL officers.

VESTNIK - David Kolar, the publisher of the Vestnik, visited the meeting and discussed publication of the Vestnik.

ABSTRACTS OF TITLE - Suggestion was made that any borrower who intends to prove title by way of abstract would be well - advised to compare costs with the cost of a title insurance policy.

REQUEST FOR SPJST HISTORY BOOK - It was agreed that the Fraternal Activities Committee consider the idea of donating an SPJST History book to the libraries of schools teaching the Czech language.

Past District II Director Henry Vitek visited the meeting and was welcomed by the board. He congratulated the board on the good work being done.

DIRECTORS' AUDIT REPORT Clarification was requested on several items and recommendations were made on several items and reports were heard from the district directors.

REST HOMES - Chairman of the Board Pokladnik reported on status of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes.

SPJST Home/Farm Interest Rate Moves Lower The Supreme Lodge SPJST has dropped its interest rate to 111/4 percent on home and farm mortgages.

The interest rate for commercial property loans was decreased to 121/4 percent.

The property to secure a loan must be one of the following: (1) Dwelling to be occupied by owner. (2) Rural or farm property on which there is or will be a dwelling which will be used as an owner residence. (3) Farm or ranch property to be used as an owner operated farm or ranch. (4) Certain types, of commercial property on a selective basis when the property is used to conduct an owner - operated business.

Due to good cash flow and an abundance of funds, the SPJST has

temporarily waived its one - year membership requirement to qualify for consideration. As soon as the quota is filled, the one - year membership requirement will again be reinstated.

In either case, if the applicant and spouse do not have at least $25,000 of SPJST insurance in force, they should purchase the additional amount needed prior to filing a loan application.

The SPJST can lend up to 75 percent of the appraised value on first - class residential real estate. For example, if the land and dwelling are appraised at $40,000, the maximum we can lend on such security is $30,000. All appraisals are made by one or more of our appraising directors. The maximum that we can lend to anyone individual is $100,000.

So far as income qualification is concerned, the monthly payment should not be more than 25 percent of the applicant's gross income. The house payment added to other monthly installment payments should not exceed 33 percent of gross income.

Loans on qualified property can be made to (1) Purchase the real estate.

(2) Improve it or construct improvements under a builder's and mechanic's lien contract or (3) To refinance another valid first lien.

District V Meeting The District V spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 9, 1986, at Lodge 142, Houston.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m, A barbecued beef brisket dinner with all the trimmings will be served at 11:30 a.m., and the meeting will convene promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club will perform during the dinner hour.

Conversational Czech At Austin

Austin Community College will offer Conversational Czech through its continuing Education Program with classes beginning February 18 through April 10 Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a short coffee break in between. Tuition fee is only $42. The Czech instructor is Mrs. Marcella Nouzovska Winnett.

Classes will be held in the Reagan High School building Room 444 (north Austin) at 7104 Berkman Drive, at the intersection of Highway 290 East and Berkman Drive (few blocks east of IH 35).

This is a non - credit course, therefore, no educational prerequisites are required.

To All SPJST Members: I will be conducting a non - credit Reading and Conversational Czech course beginning Wednesday, February 26th from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m which will be held at the Bryan College Station Brethren Church. I am fortunate to be able to use the facilities of the Brethren Church and other communities could benefit from such a program. Tuition for the entire six week course will be $12. Students will be asked to purchase a textbook at the cost of approximately $10.

I have had a supporative group of ten individuals who took part in my fall Czech Class and are interested in continuing their progress. I really feel more people should implement programs of this nature around the state. Holding a non - credit course as well as being a part of such a course can become a hobby to some individuals.

It would be mutually beneficial if A&M students and SPJST members who are receiving aid from our SPJST could attend the class. (My Opinion) If you know of anyone interested in being a part of our class, please have them contact me.

American Czech Culture Society The American - Czech Culture Society is composed of Czech fraternal societies, Czech Mutual Insurance Associations; namely, CSA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, SPJST, SVPS, WFLA, American Sokol Organization, Catholic Czech Club, Circle of Czech Women, and the Historical Society of the Czech Club.

We have been sponsoring a "Czech Day" at the State Fair of Texas since the early 1950s. This year 1986, there is something very special, "The Texas Sesquicentennial", something that can only happen once every fifty (50) years.

We are planning a three - day celebration October 3, 4, and 5, 1986 with a "Souvenir Program Book."

CHF To Sponsor Czech Heritage Celebration March 2 The Czech Cultural and Educational Foundation of San Antonio, Texas will sponsor a Czech Heritage Day March 2, 1986 at the St. Margaref Mary's Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, Texas.

The celebration will begin with a Czech mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Activity Center. The Wence Shimek Orchestra and the San Antonio Czech Singers under the direction of Dominic F. Netek will furnish the music and choral participation in the mass.

After mass, dinner will be served, followed with a short program, dancing, drawing for door prizes and ticket sale prizes, fraternizing and dancing until 6 p.m. All married couples over 50 years will be recognized at the Czech mass.

Other activities will include Highland High School Folk Dancers, the San Antonio Choral Club singing, showing of a video tape on the 1982 first Convergence Celebration, a booth

by Rudy Klecka with Czech items, and an art display booth by Sister Gladis Muzny.

Dear Readers: Our February meeting was held February 2nd. Shirley Dobecka and Tammi Dobecka led the membership with the Pledge. The membership also stood in silent respect for our departed Brother George Hubik.

All reports were given and accepted.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth took cakes to the rest home January 8th and, again.

February 5th. They made Valentines during the month. February 14th St. Paul's Church is having a Valentine banquet. Birthdays for the month are Tammy Mynar, Bennie Mynar, Stefanie Mynar and Celia Dobecka.

Lanette Hykel brought the cake.

Brother George Straten gave the board of trustees' report. The trustees had elections. Brother George Straten is chairman, Sister Lydia Dobecka is

co - chairman, Sister Peggy Dobecka is secretary, Johnnie Krizan is treasurer, and Sister Josie Mae Straten is in charge of bookings, buying and meeting trucks. The trustees agreed to pay Sister Straten $2.50 per round trip to the hall to meet trucks. President Johnnie Krizan and Vice President Rose Uptmor are in charge of the CDs. Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka are permanent guardians of the Theresa Dobecka Scholarship Fund.

The membership agreed to rent the deepfryers to West Fraternal for their anniversary.

March 23rd will be our Easter party at the lodge. The next board of trustees meeting is February 28th at 7:30 p.m.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz is on the Card Committee. Get well cards were sent to Brother Dean Sinder and Brother Alvin Schuetz. Sympathy card was sent to the Silas Smith family.

Brother Aubrey Uptmor won the $2 door prize. Sister Henrietta Mach was drawn for the $10 progressive door prize, and Sister Rita Svacek was drawn for the $9 progressive door prize. Since Sister Mach and Sister Svacek were not present, we will have two $10 door prizes at our next meeting.

Royal and Laura Warnasch are proud grandparents, again. Their son Royal, Jr., better known as Peanut, and wife, Kim, had a baby daughter, January 30th. Allison Elaine weighed in at 7 pounds, 13 ounces at a local

hospital. Big brother Justin (he's almost 4) was happy to welcome her home, Saturday. Peanut is currently serving on the Entertainment Committee at Lodge 88 so he's going to be a busy fellow this year. Our best wishes to the happy little family and to grandpa and grandma.

January 19th, in Pearland, Texas, the former Clemence Courtney became the bride of Mr. Russell J. Young in a small private ceremony. Mrs. Linda Lee served as Clemence's attendant and Mrs. Lee Bonner and Mrs. Faye Blanchard of Alexandria, Louisiana and Air Force Sergeant R.J. Young, Mr. Russell's son, were present.

Following the wedding ceremony a wedding dinner was served at Adriane's Restaurant in Houston.

Mrs. Young was very active in the youth department here at Lodge 88 in past years. Our congratulations to the happy couple as they start their new life together.

The original Telstars will be back in the Chandelier Ballroom Friday, February 21st playing from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. I remember when they played here in past years. What crowds we had!! They were one of the favorites of the younger crowd. They are 10 years older but, then, so are you. Come out and dance to their country/western and light rock music.

See if you can still keep up with them.

Saturday, February 22nd polka time and country/western tunes by Bobby Jones and his band will ring out in the ballroom. All of our regular dances are still only $4 per ticket and it's still BYOB. That's the best dance bargain in town!

133, San Antonio February 16th Meeting Lodge

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 133 will be held February 16th at the Activity Hall located at 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio. We encourage all members to attend this meeting because Brother Jerry Mikulas will be our guest from the Supreme Lodge who will speak on direct billing and annuities.

Lodge 180, Burleson Meeting Dear Members: Our Lodge 180 meeting was held Sunday, January 19th at 2:30 p.m.

President Louis Grochoske called the meeting to order, asking the group to stand and Brother Sid Pokladnik from District III led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and all remained. standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed brothers and sisters.

Roll call was by Sister Frances Simmank, with only one officer absent. She then read the minutes of the December meeting and they were approved as read.

After all other lodge business was discussed and all reports approved, President Grochoske thanked all

officers and chairpersons for a job well done in 1985.

The next order of business was the installation of officers and trustees for 1986. It was our privilege to have Brother Sid Pokladnik to do the honors, and we wish to thank him.

We were happy to have Brother Sid and his lovely wife, Justine, and also Bessie Petr, our District III youth counselor, and her husband, Emil, from Dallas as our guests for the day; do come back again.

We express our sincere condolences to the family of State Field Manager Silas H. Smith who passed away. He certainly will be missed.

After installation and picturetaking, we all adjourned to a social hour.

Then Sid gave a dinner prayer and all members and friends enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by the Entertainment Committee which included the good klobase that Sid brought us from Dallas. The sausage was very good, as usual,and the sisters brought some very good desserts, so by putting it all together, we had a nice dinner and everyone enjoyed the meal and fellowship.

It must have been Brother Sid's day because he also won the attendance prize!

Our next meeting will be February 18th at 7:30 p.m., so please make it a must and attend. Also remember our dances every Saturday night and a SPECIAL DANCE for February 21st with music by ERNIE KUCERA from Nebraska; dancing from 8 to 12 p.m.

JSTLodge 187, Round Rock January Meetings

The first board meeting of the year was held January 15th. New board members Victor Kunz and Larry Rohlack were recognized and welcomed. The board members then elected Albert Lange as the new chairman of the board and Gene Landry was elected as vice chairman for the upcoming year. Chairman Lange took the opportunity to express his appreciation to outgoing Board Chairman Arnold Leschber for his dedication and invaluable service to the lodge during the last couple of years.

Gene Landry reported that attendance at the Friday and Saturday night dances has increased substantially during the last six months and the outlook for 1986 looks especially strong. The board is especially excited about the upcoming "Cajon Fest" that will be held Sunday, March 9th. The "Cajon Fest" is being sponsored by Rio Dodge, KVET and KASE. A work/study program was established to help a different member of the youth club become familiar with basic accounting principals while working part - time for the lodge accountant, Buck Laquey. The work involves inputting accounting data into a personal computer and using the data to generate monthly reports.

Laurie Nelson was selected to participate in the work/study program during 1986.

Thirty lodge members took advantage of the beautiful weather January 26th to work around the hall doing minor repairs and general cleanup. Red Oman prepared a chicken fried steak dinner with all the

The birthday party which was held Friday, January 31st, included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordion and the piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres; the Hope Lutheran Church of Beasley provided cakes; also Lydia Hortmon and Marie Newman brought cake and cookies.

Volunteers Melva Hastings and Lydia Hortmon served cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all denomination of churches in the area that give services and communion and to the volunteers who do services in the home to the residents for the month of January.

We regret the loss of Frances Jacob.

Frances will be missed by our staff and other residents. A table with a carnation in a vase was set up for a memorial in her memory.

The senior citizen luncheons given at the Immanuel United Church of Christ and St. Michael's Catholic Church were attended by Tony Ondracek, Annie Stavinoha, Virgie Richardson, Hilda Cole, Agnes Perkins and Martha Stuchly. The senior citizen social held at the Methodist Church was attended

by Martha Wleczyk, Agnes Perkins, Emma Tielke, Annie Stavinoha, Virgie Richardson, Tony Ondracek and Hilda Cole.

The KCs came to play bingo Tuesday evenings, January 7th and 28th, with the residents; the residents reported a fine time.

Monday afternoon, January 13th, the Hope Lutheran Church came and had services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards. They also brought prizes for bingo. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Thursday evening, January 16th, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time.

Friday morning, January 17th, Elsie Mahlmann, Willie Mae Tielke, Freda Klawitter and Dora Guttenberger entertained Hulda Richter and Dorothea Bockhorn with a birthday party. A few relatives attended.

Monday afternoon, January 20th, Elizabeth Miller, Garland Huryta and Julie Huryta with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs and a cat for therapy for the residents.

Ferroud, London, England, speak for themselves without any further comment; the others support the statement expressed in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as follows: Bohuslav Martini', a figure of international standing during the 30 years of his life, was one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century.

Let us hope that this eulogical article to commemorate the 95th birthday anniversary of the composer Bohuslav Martini' two months ago, the 8th of December 1985, will increase the overall ethnic awareness among the Czech - Americans in Texas. This year we need this awareness more than anything else because of the Sesquicentennial celebrations in this State. Perhaps the Czech historians, the Toca communications and publication officer, secretary/treasurer, officer of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Leonard D. Mikeska wrote about in his TOCA reports in SPJST Vestnik, would be able to write something and have it printed too towards this goal. Guidelines For Contributors To TOCA's Register Of Czechs In Professions In commemoration of the 1986 Sesquicentennial, the Texas association, "Texans eskeho Ptivodu" also known as Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA),is compiling a collection of short "resumes" of a biographical nature on persons of Czech ancestry. This is to update the inventory of Czechs in professions collected for the Texas Centennial in 1936. The register will show the exact part played by Texans of Czech descent in the formation and continuing growth of Texas. The youth will take cakes to the rest home February 5th and they will take Valentines to them February 13th.

February 14th, the youth and their parents will attend the Sweetheart Banquet at St. Paul's United Church of Christ.

Just one look at this horse will tell what a trip from the SPJST District III Youth Camp members can do in just a few days at Camp Val Verde.

From July 29th through August 1st 1985 many youth club girls and boys had fun - filled days and nights at the camp. Among many of the activities to do were horseback riding, bows and arrows and swimming.

Anyone who missed this summer trip really missed out on a great time, so try to make it next year.

Kadlecek Wins In Katy Youth Fun Run, Places 2nd In Houston And Texas Cross Country Miss

Kelli Kadlecek, 14, daughter of Brother Jim and Sister Anne Kadlecek (Lodge 88, Houston) and granddaughter of Brother Amos and Sister Della Kadlecek and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Sauer of Houston, won first place in the annual Katy, Texas Youth Fun Run held in. Katy, Saturday, January 25th. She outpaced her competition in her age group and ran the 2 - mile run in 11 minutes and

Kelli Kadlecek 32 seconds, for a new record for that meet.

She also placed second in the Houston Independent School District Cross Country Middle School City Championship meet held at Delmar Stadium in Houston, recently. Her victory gave her team, which she is co captain of, enough points to win the City Championship.

Kelli is a lifelong member of Lodge 88 and a straight A student at Paul Revere Middle School in west Houston. She placed second in the State Cross Country Meet which qualified her to run in the National TAC Cross Country Meet in Cincinnati, Ohio. She also qualified to run in the National AAU Junior Olympics in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania last year. She competed in the Junior Olympics in 1984.

In addition to these accomplishments, Kelli won first place in her age group in the Prestigious Bayou City Fun Run in Houston in 1985. Her prizes included a Waterford crystal decanter, a signed and numbered commemorative poster of the event and a medal. Last year, she placed second in the Transco Heart and Sole Fun Run in Houston and was (Continued On Page 12.)

Darrell Malicoat, Lodge 1 29 (Continued from page 10.) presented her award by International Gold Medal Olympic winner, Carl Lewis. She placed fourth in her first Major Run, Women on the Run, at the Houstonian, early in 1985.

Kelli plans to run in many runs during the next year as well as attempting the 26 - mile Tenneco Houston Marathon in 1987. She is also active in other school activities including membership on her school swim team and member of her school's

student council. Her high school goals are to maintain her straight A grades, compete in high school athletics, remain active in school activities and obtain a college scholarship.

Kelli has an older sister, Kimberly, who is a freshman majoring in Business Administration and Advertising at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.

Rosary was held at 7 p.m. December 23rd at Wilkerson - Hatch Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian burial was at 10 a.m. December, 24th at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waco.

Burial was at Waco Memorial Park.

Brother Pavlovsky was born February 22, 1930 at Woth, Texas.

Lillie Mae Rumley was born April 1, 1912 in Moulton, Texas to the late John F. and Cecelia Vyvial.

We, the Resolution Committee of Jaromir Lodge No. 54, West, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister MARY A. DULAK, age 85, of 400 N. Roberts, West, who died January 22, 1986 in a local hospital.

Sister Dulak was born in Fayette County, Texas, the daughter of August and Mary Morris. She married August Dulak in Waco, in March 1920. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1970. She was a housewife, co - owner and operator of Playdium Pool and formerly in the grocery and restaurant business.

Sister Dulak was a member of the SPJST since 1917, a member of CDA No.829, and St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption.

She was preceded in death by a son, Captain Edwin A. Dulak on May 10, 1947.

Survivors include two daughters, Georgia Lyons of West and Frances Poteet of El Paso; one brother, Herman Morris of Waco; one sister, Ann Farek of Waco; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. January 24th at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Msgr. B.J. Zientek officiating. Interment followed in Rosemound Cemetery in Waco.

Serving as pallbearers were George Kana, Jr., Joe Kana, Harry Cinek, Charles Cinek, Buddy Cernosek and Kenneth McMorrough.

Brother Koym, a longtime East Bernard businessman, was born September 26, 1900 to Herman W. and Lena Rhinehart Koym in East Bernard, Texas.

He was united in marriage to Lena Sabrsula of Wallis, November 11, 1932. For many years, he was owner and operator of the Koym Feed and Spreading Service in East Bernard.

Brother Koym was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Texas Agri - Lime Association.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. at the Methodist Church in East Bernard, Tuesday, January 7th with Rev. Carl Garner of Kountz, Texas officiating. Interment was in the East Bernard Methodist Cemetery. The body lay - in - state at Knesek Funeral Home in Wallis until 10 a.m. Tuesday, when it was taken to the church in East Bernard.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lena Koym of East Bernard; one daughter, Joy Balderach of Houston; sons, Glenn and Hank of East Bernard and Donnie Koym of Aransas Pass; sisters, Mrs. Dora Gabler of East Bernard and Mrs. Josephine Kopecky of California; one brother, Louis Koym of Sealy; six grandchildren; three great - grandchildren; plus numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers were David Balderach, Tim Hagen, Ed Seymour, Jeff Koym, Todd Koym, and Russell Koym.

Sometimes it is as "dekuju." MO is more proper and is more often used. Plural is "dekujeme." It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done. Then, it is "dekuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or "dekuji Vain" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "dekuji" is the word "prosim".

"Rad° se stab" and "neni zae" is used similar to "I was glad to do it," or "don't mention it," in this country.

same. The informal address would be "promiii" and "odpust" to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a "thou" basis. The "thou" and "you" basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address "thou" — in Czech "ty" — (the verb "tykati si", and persons we address "you" — in Czech "vy" — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is "vykati si."

The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi 'Ito" (or "Ja lituji").

The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry", but generally, we can say that "Je mi lito" is used much more sparingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpust'te" or "prominte".

In Czech you ask it when you want to know how your friend is doing and not instead of "good morning". In other words, in answer to "jak se ma" in Czech, you may hear a little longer story than the stereotype "fine, thank you." Guidelines For Czech Historical Markers Fellow Czech Texans: 1986 will be Texas' Sesquicentennial Year. During this year, starting as soon as possible, Texans of Czech ancestry should think of honoring their heritage, culture and ancestors.

One way to do this is the placing of a historical marker. BUT, before you start, remember this: Just because a man or woman was your grandparent, or you went to a certain school, for example, they do not always rate a historical marker. The following will give you a clearer idea of what or who rates a marker: 1. What did this person, building, place or event contribute to the Czechs, their communities, or to the state as a whole?

2. Your research must include correct names, dates, and be able to be documented. You cannot use hearsay.

The burden of proof will rest with yon.

You can use footnotes in which you quote your source.

3. If your goal is to honor a person, then you must follow the research guidelines set out by the Historical Commission on Page 3 of the pamphlet.

4. In compiling information for a Czech marker, be sure that you stress the pronunication marks of the Czech names; for example, Matta or Jirasek or Silar. Those little marks 0 0 or (') are very important and should not be left out.

5. Your information must be typed on 8 i/2 x 11" plain, white bond paper . The typewriter ribbon must be good and dark as quite a few copies will be made from your paper.

6. Please read very carefully all the instructions on the pamphlet enclosed.

There is one thing I want to stress: You do not tell the Historical Commission what you want on the marker.

Eventually you will probably be sent a copy of what they have decided to put on the marker for your approval.

7. Last, but not least, be prepared when they write you (if your application has been approved) for the cost of the marker so that you can send the money at once to them. Check the markers shown on the pamphlet and not the prices. I have been told that the prices have gone up since I placed a marker in the New Ulm Cemetery at New Ulm, Austin County, Texas, in April 1985. The price will be the cost of the marker plus tax.

If after six to nine months you have not heard from the Historical Commission, check with them. It took almost a year, from the time I started, to completion, to get the marker set up in New Ulm. Good luck with your undertaking and, above all, do not lose your patience.
