Home Office Installs Ramp If you have recently driven by the SPJST Home Office, you probably noticed the construction underway on the west end of the building.

The improvement is an easy access ramp to allow for safer and more convenient access by handicapped and elderly members and visitors to the SPJST Home Office/Museum. Over the years, a number of our members have spoken of the need for easier access and the Supreme Lodge has now taken action on their suggestions.

The ramp entrance will be near the

northwest corner of the parking lot and will enter the building through the existing door facing our parking lot.

The project should be completed in about two weeks.

The Supreme Lodge is also having a taller flag pole installed. The 35 - foot lighted flag pole is situated between the two lovely Magnolia trees that beautify the front entrance to our building. The SPJST has a proud heritage of patriotism and display of our U.S. flag in this way is only fitting.

The construction is being done by Vanicek Construction Company, the low bidder on the project. The architect designing the permanent ramp was Charles Voelter, who also designed the Home Office building.

have to pick them up again; instead, put them on a table, bench or chair.

Don't twist unnecessarily when lifting things. It's much better to turn your feet than to twist at the waist. Never twist and bend at the same time.

Instead of reaching out with heavy objects, hold them close to your body.

Lift them smoothly and slowly, not with quick, jerky movements. ***

Tuesday morning, January 28th, your editor attended SFM Brother Silas Smith's funeral at St. Louis Catholic Church in Waco, Texas.

Monsignor Mark Deering gave an inspirational eulogy about Brother Smith, his life and, especially, about his life and work in our SPJST Society, addressed the family, our members and friends, of whom there were very many in attendance. He mentioned that Brother Smith gave him a cap with SPJST on it and that he liked it and also took it with him to Ireland. He is a very nice and humane individual.

He relinquished the microphone to District III Director and Chairman of the Board Sid Pokladnik who, delivered a fuller and fraternal SPJST eulogy on the life of Brother Smith about his youth, his work, serving in WW II, and our Society as State Field Manager. He also extended sympathy to Sister Jeanette Smith, the family, and friends on behalf of the Supreme Lodge and our Society's membership.

Both were very fitting and proper.

Supreme Lodge officers and staff members served as honorary pallbearers. Interment followed in Oaklawn Cemetery at Waco. May he rest in eternal peace and may we hold his memory in honor.

That same morning of Brother Smith's funeral, the 25th launch of our spaceships (this one the Challenger) was being delayed for a while at the John Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew consisted of five men and two women astronauts; they were Dr. Judith Resnik, a PhD in engineering, and Christa McAuliffe, a talented and loved schoolteacher (the first civilian and schoolteacher to go into space who was going to give two 1 - hour lessons on space from space to children in her school in New Hempshire and many other schools, a wonderful experience to all school children.)

After the funeral on my way home, I happened to hear the radio announcer say: "We repeat, after a minute and some seconds of successful liftoff and flight, Challenger has exploded about 9 miles, more or less, over the Atlantic Ocean with a big ball of fire and pieces of material are falling into the ocean from a height of about 9 miles; there is no way anyone could have survived in that inferno." It was indeed difficult to believe that one's ears were hearing correctly, yet, during the rest of the day, the news sank in rather seriously.

On behalf of the entire SPJST Society, the editor extends condolences to the seven astronauts' families, their friends and certainly fraternally sympathizes with the schoolteachers and children in our country; what they witnessed, let us hope, it will not daunt their aspirations nor hurt the NASA space program! ***

Approximately 80 percent of all Americans suffer from low - back pain at some time in their lives. Much of this pain is caused by lifting heavy objects improperly, say doctors. Their advice is to avoid unnecessary bending. Try not to place objects on the floor if you know somebody will

Though uncomfortable, fever is rarely harmful to children, doctors say. However, a high temperature may require immediate medical attention when: The child is less than 4 months old; the fever is more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit when measured orally, or 102 degrees rectally; a persistent, low grade fever -- 1 or 2 degrees above normal -- lasts for more than 24 hours; a fever is accompanied by a stiff neck, confusion, delirium, hallucinations, irritability, lethargy, seizures or convulsions. In all cases, consult your doctor if the fever persists for more than three days or if pain continues for more than five days. ***

Hearing - impaired consumers have a new telephone number to call for questions or complaints about mail problems, says the Postal Service. The new number is (202) 268 - 2310. The number is for a telecommunications device for the deaf, or TDD, which was installed last year. The TDD enables deaf people to type out messages, transmit them over telephone lines and receive typed responses. ***

Thousands of babies are born each year to mothers who are unknowing carriers of the hepatitis - B virus, which can lead to liver disease and early death. Many fatalities could be prevented, says Dr. Saul Krugman, professor of pediatrics at New York University Medical Center, if pregnant women in high - risk categories were tested for the virus and if their babies -- in cases where those tests were positive -- were vaccinated at birth. ***

When the temperature drops below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, frostbite becomes a hazard to exposed skin, warns the National Weather Service.

Frostbite can damage, even destroy, skin tissue. A symptom: Extremities -fingers, toes, nose, ears -- turn white or pale. The best treatment: Apply warm towels, a heating pad or hot - water bottle. Never rub affected areas with snow; that old remedy can make matters worse. ***

Creating Ideas. You must acquire an active attitude of continually searching for new ideas or associations, and not waiting for stimulation or illusmination. District V Meeting The District V spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 9, 1986, at Lodge 142, Houston.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A barbecued beef brisket dinner with all the trimmings will be served at 11:30 a.m., and the meeting will convene promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club will perform during the dinner hour.

On the agenda for this meeting is the election of officers, and there will also be a couple of fund - raising projects.

Please make plans to attend this meeting March 9th.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, January 12, 1986 at the Grant Building with lodge President Linda Mikush presiding.

Brother Morris congratulated everyone. President Krizan thanked Brother Morris for installing the officers.

President Krizan continued with the meeting. Lanette Hykel and Tammi Dobecka led the membership with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

President Krizan thanked Brother Nick and Sister Dorothy Morris for coming and visiting with us today. All officers were present.

Sister Shirley Dobecka reported 20 members were present. We had three guests, Brother Nick and Sister Dorothy Morris and James Gerik.

All reports were given and approved. Sister Hykel read a thank you letter from the SL President Howard Leshikar for our donation to the Statue of Liberty.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz thanked everyone for the donations for the Christmas party. We made real good on our project. We took cakes to the rest home December 4th and also January 8th. We took Christmas gifts to the rest home December 20th and ate pizzas afterward. They worked on crafts during the month and they donated to charities. Craig Hromadka has a birthday this month. Lanette Hykel brought the cake.

Brother George Straten gave the board of trustees report. The lodge will be operating on a team system.

The CB Club has discontinued their dances. Brother Straten thanked everyone who worked with the team system for the past year. Brother Straten also thanked Cyrill Svrcek for shredding the grass around the hall.

Bradley Louis Kroll, juvenile member, was accepted as a new member into our lodge.

Elgin Lodge held its regular meeting January 21, 1986 with 29 members attending.

The meeting was opened by newly elected President Roy Simank. Other officers were Vice President Dale Kessel, Secretary Gilbert Kubicek, Treasurer Alice Kovar and Financial Secretary Lambert Peterson.

After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, committee reports were given by various officers and chairpersons.

Entertainment Chairman Leslie Gustafson reported that "Mustache Joe" from Nebraska is on tour and will be playing at our hall February 18th. We invite all to come out and enjoy some good polka music. If you've ever heard him, you know a good time is to be had.

As a reminder to our members, next month's meeting will be held February 1 lth .

The District II spring meeting will be held here in Elgin March 16, 1986.

Planning for this event has already begun and we hope to see many of our neighboring lodge members in attendance.

Our meeting held Sunday, January 12, 1986 was called to order by our President Edwin Adamek. The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read; the treasurer's report and the Property Committee report were then given. The audit report was also given for October, November and December, 1985.

54, West Meeting Lodge

Lodge No. 54, West met for their fourth quarterly meeting and Christmas social held December 8, 1985, with thirty members present.

The meeting was called to order by President Rudy Sefcik. All present stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag led by Justin, Brandon and Shawn Kaluza. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed Brother Bob Wright who died November 29, 1985.

Secretary Anne Emery read the roll call of officers showing all were present and minutes of the September meeting which were approved after two corrections were made.

Items of correspondence were read.

President Sefcik read a letter from the Supreme Lodge suggesting that our goal for contributing to the restoration of the Statue of Liberty could be reached if each lodge would send roughly ten cents per member. This would amount to $69.50 for our lodge.

Sister Beanie Kacir and Sister Maxine Sefcik each volunteered to donate $35 to meet our goal. We thank these two members for these generous donations. A very informative letter from the Supreme Lodge regarding

various lodge matters was read by Secretary Emery.

Financial reports on the Insurance Account and Hall Account were given

by Treasurer Freddie Kaluza. These were approved as read.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave the following report: One conversion policy for Donna M. Hutyra by Sales Representative Raymond Volcik; one new juvenile member John J. Kapavik by Sales Representative John J. Mynar Sr.; five applicants secured double indemnity

by SR John J. Mynar Sr.; two conversions from 20 - year to Special Premium Life on Matthew D. Scott and Whitney E. Scott, these were transacted by Sales Representative Ervin Pustejovsky. Our special thanks go to these three sales representatives.

There was one paid - up endowment at age 18, four deaths, two suspensions, four cancellations, six expirations, and eight transferees. As of November 30, 1985, we have 389 active members and 309 paid - up members; a total of 698 members. This report was accepted as read.

A discussion was held regarding the paid - up members paying local dues.

This was tabled and will be discussed at our March meeting. President Sefcik and Vice President Ted Kocian appointed the following committee to discuss this and to serve on the Rules & Regulations Committee; namely, Freddie Kaluza, John Emery, Henry Grossman and John Mynar, Sr. President Sefcik explained that beginning January 1, 1986, the Supreme Lodge will add additional insurance rather than send refund checks to members unless notified by the members. A vote was taken regarding direct billing by the Supreme Lodge. This passed and our lodge will participate in direct billing by the Supreme Lodge rather than billing on the local level.

The following members were elected to serve as officers of Lodge 54 for 1986: President Ted Kocian, Sr., Vice President John D. Emery, Secretary Anne Emery, Treasurer Freddie Kaluza, Financial Secretary Janice Kaluza, English Reporter Anne Emery, and Czech Reporter Jan Vaculik. Sister Maxine Sefcik will keep her position as financial secretary until direct billing by the Supreme Lodge takes effect.

The Audit Committee includes Brother John Mynar, Sr., Sister Beanie Kacir, Sister Mona Zahirniak, and Sister Maxine Sefcik, after her present office will be terminated.

Sister Beanie Kacir gave her report of the Audit Committee which was approved as read. She also reminded all members to be sure and have their report of their time and monies contributed to charitable events ready for the March meeting.

Brother Ted Kocian complimented the Sokol Gymnastic Association of West for the lovely decorations and improvements that they have made to the hall.

Birthday celebrants for January, February and March will be honored at our next meeting, the first Sunday, March 2nd.

Sister Lillie Mynar was the door prize winner.

The meeting was adjourned after which Santa made his appearance much to the delight of the children.

Bags of goodies were passed out while everyone enjoyed the fellowship and refreshments. A delicious Christmas dinner was served and enjoyed by all.

Lodge 80 Holland Meets Dear Members and Friends: How time goes by, especially, this time of the year -- short days and long nights! We sleep most of our time away, anyway I was going to have this letter in the Vestnik in January, but I missed the boat!

We had our January meeting Sunday, January 5th. President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

After the Pledge of Allegiance by those present, the installation of officers for 1986 was held.

We had the honor and pleasure to have with us at the meeting, our District II Director Willie E. Kohutek who installed the following officers of our lodge; namely, President D.I. Bohac, Vice President Adell Horelica, Financial Secretary Glenda Liles, Secretary/Treasurer Glen Latham, and Reporter Joe Barabas. Brother Kohutek gave an interesting talk later in the meeting. Thanks, Willie, come to see us again soon.

After the, installation, the minutes of December 1985 meeting were read by Secretary Latham. They were accepted as read by the membership.

We had 25 members present at the

meeting.

The subject of collecting local dues from the members was brought up for discussion. It was agreed that we collect these dues as we always did and also from the paidup insurance members. This will go in effect January 1986.

Next order of business was to appoint various committees of. Lodge 80 for 1986.

Auditing Committee: Otto Horelica, Mrs. Ricky Benner and Jerry Massar.

Resolution Committee: Glenda Liles, Glen Latham and Joe Barabas, Jr. Rules & Regulations: Glen Latham, John Barabas and Ricky Benner.

Bar Committee: D.I. Bohac, Joe Barabas, Jr. and Otto Horelica.

Frank Kitchen Committee: Pajestka, Sr. and Harold Kurtz.

Entertainment Committee: D.I. Bohac and Darwin Ivicic.

Bingo Committee: Glen Latham, Frankie Pajestka, Jr., David Posey, Danny Hendrix and Adell Horelica.

Those are the members of the various committees of Lodge 80 for 1986.

The liability insurance was discussed at the meeting. This is a matter of great concern for all the lodges that have

81, Needville Announces Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Our January 12th meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek, following a delicious roast beef dinner prepared by Benita Walzel.

Benita Walzel led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present, and all reports were accepted as given.

Secretary Mary Werner read thank you cards from the Barcak family and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home.

Lodge 81 will have the annual chili supper Thursday, February 13th; serving will begin at 5 p.m. Members are asked to bring their favorite pastries.

We were delighted to have several guests, Police Chief Rodney Kimmons and family.

Chief Kimmons thanked Lodge 81for the donation and explained how it was spent.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka and his lovely wife, Delores, were also with us, as was my dear friend, Muriel Daniel, a Lodge 88 member. We enjoyed having them and invite you to come again.

Door prize winners were Mary Matcek and Victor Werner, drawn by Rhonda Kimmons.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 9th . We will have a fried chicken lunch at 12 noon, and the meeting will start at 2 p.m. Ladies are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert.

84, Dallas To Hold Annual Initiation Lodge

Dear Members: Attendance at our meeting was good. Secretary Salac read the minutes of the last meeting, also all correspondence.

Treasurer Carlyn Ondrusek gave her yearly report and the following committees gave reports: Entertainment -- Brother Jim Novak gave his monthly, as well as yearly, reports.

Audit -- Brother Gilbert Kalich reported all lodge dues were in order. _.Ball Club -- Brother Ben Jarma said the 1986 season has started and he also gave his financial report for the year.

Decorating -- No Report.

House Committee -- Brother Salac said the sign in the parking lot (which does not conform with the city ordinance) will be taken down shortly.

Hall Rental -- Brother Emil Petr gave out rental dates as well as dance schedules to those present.

Czech Culture meets January 27, 1986.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council delegates met January 11th and outlined the meeting location: February 17 at Sokol and SPJST Lodge 130 on Greenville Avenue.

Special Chairman Evelyn Salac gave her report on money made by help who worked in the kitchen during rentals.

Our lodge initiation and monthly meeting is February 16th at 3 p.m. with dinner at 5 p.m.; please mark this on your calendar.

The 76th lodge anniversary will be celebrated March 16th; another thing to mark on your calendar.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik announced June 8th is SPJST Day. More details later. I also want you to mark that date.

87 Temple January Meeting

President Ladis Navratil called the regular meeting to order Friday evening, January 10th at 7:30 p.m.

Sophie Palmquist was remembered in silent tribute by lodge members.

President Navratil thanked outgoing President Vlasta Jez for her many years of serving as an officer of Lodge No. 87.

In the absence of Secretary Dorothy Chervenka, due to illness, Mary Zatopek read all correspondence received including a thank you note from the Supreme Lodge for the Statue of Liberty contribution; she

also gave her financial secretary and treasurer's report.

The following committees were appointed for the calendar year 1986: Parliamentarian -- Sidney Kacir, Flagbearer -- Jerry Valchar, Entertainment Chairman -- Annie Plsek, Auditing Committee -- George Schiller, Jerry Valchar and Lad Zatopek, Resolution Committee -Dorothy Chervenka, Georgia Navratil and Sidney Kacir. The board of trustees was elected.

Annie Plsek announced that chili would be served before the business meeting at the February 14th meeting.

88 Houston News Lodge

A happy twenty - fifth wedding celebration for Grace and Raymond Lesak was held at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Joe (Gaylon) Chadwick in Huffman, Texas January 18th. Over 100 family members and friends gathered for a barbecue dinner prepared by Denise and Lyn Lesak and Joe and Gaylon. Raymond's mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Odell Pederson, and Grace's mother, Mrs. Adel Mello, were present for this event. Raymond has been employed at The Bank of The Southwest for over 27 years and Gracie is currently working at North East Medical Center. They are planning an automobile trip to Canada later in the spring. The Lesak family are all SPJST Lodge 88 members.

Don't forget Sunday, February 9th is our 21st lodge anniversary celebration. A baked chicken dinner with parsley potatoes, green beans, salad, and iced - tea or coffee will be served starting at 11:30 a.m. A large adult plate and a smaller mini - plate will be available with the prices being $4 and $2.50. We'll play bingo at 2 o'clock and a dance begins at 5 p.m.

Bobby Jones will play for the dance and the tickets are priced at only $2.

The Birthday Club Sisters will, again, have their famous pastry booth with all those good homemade goodies available. Birthday Club President Rita Alexander and her ladies will be glad to accept pastry donations for their project.

Saturday, February 15th, Al Pierson comes back to the Chandelier Ballroom for your dancing pleasure.

This will be a DRESS - CODE dance and tickets are now on sale for $10 each. Mr. Pierson not only has a very good band playing all the favorite dance tunes, but also pulls his piano right up to the edge of the stage and visits as you dance past. He is a band leader, a piano player, and a very good showman. Come out and enjoy the evening, Saturday, February 15th.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox and his committee have announced a special mid - week dance Wednesday, February 12th. The Jan Garber Orchestra under the direction of Dick Wickman, playing big band music, will appear in the ballroom from 8 o'clock until midnight. Tickets are now on sale and they are $10 each.

George and Delores Fennell welcomed their first grandson, Matthew Anthony Ciccatti Sunday, January 26th. Matthew, son of Cynthia and Greg Ciccatti weighed in at 7 pounds and 2 ounces at Memorial City Hospital during the Super Bowl.

The members elected its officers for the new year during the December meeting. Dear Members and Friends: We hope everyone who has been sick with the flu or whatever this is that's going around are on the road to recovery.

We extend our get - well wishes to Brother Joe Merlick who is in the Harris Hospital since the 18th with a fractured hip. Get well soon, Joe, also to Brother Elmer Howard who is in the Harris Hospital. Brother Rudy Wruble will be going home the 1st to recuperate; so to all of you get well, soon!

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sister Jeanette Smith and family on the death of her husband, Brother Silas Smith. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.

I failed to mention one of the highlights of our Christmas party; a beautiful Gingerbread House was donated by Brother Johnnie and Sister Bunny Tesar. You could tell many hours were put in the making by Bunny, and it was greatly appreciated.

The lucky winner was Brother Noell Allen.

Invitation To Lodge 172, Pasadena An

January 10th, Lodge 172 had its workers' annual party and dance. We had a large turnout and all had a really good time. The officers had no problem finding enough volunteer help to keep the lodge running for the year ahead.

Dance music was by the ROUSTABOUTS band. The band was made up of lodge members and guests.

The music was very good and a joy to dance to.

We would like to see all our lodge members and their guests come out and dance with us every Saturday night. We have several country/western bands during the coming year who make very good dance music.

Our Lodge 172 is located at 3609 Preston in Pasadena between Vista and Fairmont Streets. We have ample paved parking area for all who attend.

Highlights Of Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting was held Monday, January 13th. A pot luck supper, before the meeting, was very good. The meeting was well attended and all reports, except bingo report, were read and approved as read. The bingo report will be made at our next meeting in February by our

new Bingo Chairman,Harry Musick.

The members, again voted to sponsor Jerry Mikus in this year's National Bass Tournament for the Deaf in May and June.

On the sick list for this month were Walter Parson's wife, Jeneva Bragg and Phill Boyle, Sr. who injured his back.

Our District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and husband, Emil, were among the visitors; Bessie was there to give Phill Boyle, the newly - elected youth leader, some information, but was unable to because of Phill being laid - up. Better luck next time, Bessie!

District III Director Sid Pokladnik was present to install the new officers for 1986. Now all of the officers are ready to work for your lodge and for you members and they are asking all members for their help and cooperation, so attend meetings and tell them what you would like to do and help them when you can.

Most of the remainder of the meeting was taken up on talk on how to refinance the lodge hall for a long term loan to reduce the monthly payments and about new ways to bring in more money for the lodge and the possibility of a ballroom dance group renting the hall, but more on that in the next meeting.

Remember, in every group there are people who make things happen, and those who watch things happen, and those who wonder --- WHAT HAPPENED! Let's be one of the first group rather than one of the last group.Those in the first group are the ones who have made Lodge 183 go and grow in the past, now is the time for all of us to jump in and help the new officers make the lodge grow even more in the future.

Saturday, January 18th Daniel Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees, Angelina Steborek, B. J. Hlavaty and Norman Kneschk, Lodge 183 sales representatives, attended the sales seminar at Supreme Lodge on the new SPJST Flexible Protector Plan conducted by SL Vice President Bernie Gebala and SFM Gene McBride. It was very informative and should help the sales representatives sell more insurance for the Society.

While we were in the class, Gracie Kneschk and Mary Ann Roznovsky went shopping in the heavy fog in Temple and got lost and had a hard time finding the Temple Mall. They told us they knew they were not lost because they saw the same used car lot with the same car for sale three times that morning. A very successful month on our January lodge dances, thanks to John and Helen Anderson who hosted January.

We had our lodge meeting. We had our youth skating party. We had the square dances by the Pine Squares Club. We had our clogging lessons.

And now we have the square dance lessons.

January 11th, we danced to Eddie Thompson's disc jockey music; it was great.

January 25th, we danced to the Comeback Band. Folks, they were great and we had our second largest crowd. For our pleasure, at intermission, we had floor shows featuring the square dancers, cloggers and a solo by Diane Sikes clogging to the GHOST BUSTERS. We thank everyone who came making it a big success.

James Sikes, our president, has had some repairs on our lodge roof and now full steam ahead on our bathroom project. We hope to complete this project very soon. Don't forget our work day February 17th. Everyone is welcome!

Hosts for February are Joel and Seale Towers. February 8th, come dance to Joel Towers's Country/Western Disc Jockey music from 8 p.m. until midnight; $5 per couple. Lots of fun and good dancing!

It seems like winter forgot East Texas. We've had such beautiful weather - up to 40 lows and 70 highs; as my wife would say, "have you ever"! Then again, I might be opening my mouth too soon.

January 11th, we had a most successful dance. As you know, we announced having only two dances a month; well, John and Helen Anderson started our events with a big bang and folks, it's going to work out alright. We had a very good turnout to dance to Eddie Thompson's disc jockey music. I enjoyed it and seems like there was a 100 percent approval.

January 14th, our monthly lodge meeting was held. The main topic of conversation was the purchase of the building and the plans of having contractors come to survey and submit bids for our new roof and our bathroom and disposal facilities. We also elected to have a work day February 17th to help out with renovation projects. The ladies are going to serve breakfast at 8 a.m. All help will be welcome!

While we were having our meeting, Youth Leader Diane Sikes was also having her first youth meeting. She was very enthusiastic about the turn of events and future projects they have planned, so much so that they served our meeting with Koolaid and cookies.

We enjoyed that! The youth program planned a skating party for January 17th; that was also a very good turnout as you can see by the photos. And then, folks, on that same day January 17th at 8 p.m., the East Texas Pine Square Dancers had their first meeting and dance in our lodge which they will be using for lessons and their regular dances. We welcome this outstanding club. "Fun, Fun, Fun!" Just look at their pictures.

Heritage Society Meeting Czech Geneology Seminar

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will have its first meeting of the year February 23rd at the SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 88 located on 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas. The meeting will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The main event of the day will be a Czech Geneology Seminar which will be one of the first Czech events for the Sesquicentennial Year of 1986. The seminar will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be in charge of the program.

Admission will be $1. Sandwiches, cold drinks, etc. will be sold by the SPJST Lodge No. 88.

Genealogy Seminar "Kicks Off" Sesquicentenniel Events For Czechs In Texas Czech

Genius Of The Czech Music (Compiled by John J. Karas Of Houston) [Continued from last week's Vestnik issue] The growing political unrest of 1937 - 38, Hitler's Anschluss of Austria in March of 1938 and, at the same time, start of Nazi plots against Czechoslovakia were reflected in the Concerto grosso and in the turbulent Fifth Quartet. Czechoslovakia's partial mobilization in May 1938, Nazi terrorists coming at nights through the forested mountains across the border from Hitler's Germany, burning and looting, with the help of Germans living on the Czech side of the border, the properties of peaceful dwellers in

Czech border districts while at the same time Hitler, with foam at his mouth, screamed heaps of abuse in his radio speeches at the Czechoslovak government, accusing it -- Heavens Behold! -- of the discriminations against Germans living in Czechoslovakia; coward Neville Chamberlain, with his umbrella, which by his infamous actions became a symbol of servitude; Chamberlain's cohort, Lord Runciman, who after dining and wining at the Nazi feasts at some chateaus in Czech border districts, belonging to German speaking nobility living there for centuries, sided with those traitors of the Czechoslovak republic, building of bomb shelters across the country, second full mobilization of Czechoslovak army accomplished with lightning speed, Chamberlain's desire to appease Hitler at any price together with his heavy influence on the French These government of that time were some of the main factors which brought the explosive situation in Europe to the fateful Munich conference, where, September 30, 1938 Chamberlain of England and Daladier of France signed away remnants of their countries' honor. These two statesmen, together with Mussolini and Hitler, were deciding Czechoslovakia's fate without a single representative of the old country being allowed to be present! The remark of Neville Chamberlain: "We are not going to go to war for a far - away country we know nothing about---" and the Munich pact itself became symbols of treachery, treachery of France and England on the scale which does not have a parallel in the recorded history. Czechs everywhere, people in Czechoslovakia and people of Czech or Slovak descent in many countries (including the Texans of Czech ancestry), were justly very much upset by this atrocious treachery; many did protest this horrible act to the best of their abilities, Martina objected to the outrageous Munich agreement and the subsequent Nazi invasion of crippled Czechoslovakia the 15th of March 1939 by his powerful Double Concerto.

The WW II started September 1st 1939, Poland was defeated by September 28th, Denmark and Norway fell to Nazis by the spring of 1940 while there was a phony war called the Sitzkrieg alongside the borders between Germany and France.

The Blitzkrieg in the West (an assault on the low countries) started May 10th 1940, the independence of Holland, Belgium and the duchy of Luxembourg was swept aside by Germans and the debacle of France was completed on June 17th of the same year when marshal Main asked for an armistice. Paris has been occupied June 14th; Bohuslav Martina, who was blacklisted by Nazis, fled Paris June 10th, leaving manuscripts and all of his belongings.

He traveled first to Limoges and then to Aix - en - Provence; during the next nine months of endless wandering he slept on more than a dozen railway station platforms.

His plans to escape to North America foundered through difficulties in procuring exit papers, and, in great hardship, he wrote compositions. the Fantasia and Toccata for piano, the Sinfonietta giocosa and the Sonata da camera, the last being completed in Lisbon, the capitol city of Portugal, where he had found a temporary refuge in January 1941.

Finally, berths were secured on the SS Exeter and 31 March 1941, Martina and his wife, Charlotte, arrived in New Yo! k. Adjusting to life in the New

World and to the bustle of the world's largest city at that time was not easy.

Martina spoke no English, and he possessed no evidence of his talents beyond a handful of scores. As I mentioned before, he escaped from chaotic Paris with almost nothing else but the shirt on his back. However, his previous acquaintanceship with Sergi Koussvitzky paid off, because a commission from this conductor of Boston Symphony Orchestra led to the composition of Martini's First Symphony here in the United States.

With its successful premiere, Bohuslav Martina regained his confidence and embarked on a project to write at least one symphony each year. He produced thus between 1942 and 1946 five symphonies as well as numerous concertos and more than 20 chamber musical pieces. He lived in Middlebury (Vermont), Lennox (Massachusetts), Darien (Connecticut) and Jamaica (New York), but his heart remained in Czechoslovakia, as the Pisniay na jednu stranku (Songs on One Page), Pisni'dky na dve stthnky (Songs on Two Pages) and the Patnatnik LidicIm (Memorial to Lidice) show. The latter was introduced to the general public October 28th, 1943, at the start of a special concert arranged by the association called American Friends of Czechoslovakia to commemorate the 25th birthday anniversary of the Czechoslovak republic. At this point it is perhaps necessary to inform, at least in a few words, those who were too young (or were not born yet) about he bestial crime committed by the Nazi Germany against the peaceful village Lidice, close to mining and steel city of Kladno, sometimes called Czech Pittsburgh, not too far from Prague.

The village of Lidice was encircled June 10th, 1942 by the special Hitlerite units, the population was rounded up, men from 16 up were shot right there, women and older children were taken to the concentration camps and the small children were given to the German families for a "re education." The village itself (including the church and the cemetery) was razed to the ground, leveled, and the former site was used later as fields.

Although in the latter stages of WW II there were other villages or towns in Czechoslovakia and in the other countries destroyed by Nazis, Lidice was the first example of the barbarious action of the occupation forces against the peaceful community, because of its Nazi - fabricated connection with the resistance movement. Martini's composition Memorial to Lidice was accepted by the music experts and music lovers alike as a manifestation of strong anti - fascism which started thus anew the witch hunt against him and his compositions in Nazi occupied Europe. Although Martina planned to go back to Prague right after the end of the hostilities in Europe, he changed his mind and accepted, instead, a summer teaching post at Tanglewood here in USA. He was unable though to fullfil this commitment because of a serious accident, whose aftermath troubled his hearing and nervous system for several years. Between 1947 and 1951 his output was erratic and only slowly did he regain his former facility.

In 1948 B. Martina spent a long vacation in Switzerland and France before returning to New York, in the autumn, to take up the composition chair at the well - known Princetown University, where he remained for the next three years. During this period Bohuslav Martina composed 15 chamber works, some of them, like the

Sinfonia concertante (in 1949) and the Piano Trio No. 2, influenced by the Austrian composer Franz Joseph Hayden (1732 - 1809). Martini" also wrote, at that time, the television operas fm &Mk iije ("What Men Live By") and Zenitza ("The Marriage"), but his most outstanding work --- the climax of his first American stay (from 1941 to 1953) --was the Fantaisies symphoniques, also known as the Sixth Symphony. From 1953 to 1955 Bohuslav Martina lived in Nice in southern France, where he worked on the oratio Gilgame g , started the comic opera Mirandolina and began the series of nostalgic chamber cantatas. He returned to the United States again in 1955 to teach at the Curtis Institute, but, again-- according to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians -- what he saw as the slick American way of life sickened him, and, in 1956, he left to accept a professorship at the American Academy in Rome, Italy.

In that country and later in Switzerland, composer Bohuslav Martina poured his energies into the symphonic poem Skala ("The Rock"), Fresky ("Frescoes") based on the works of Piero della Francesca in Arezzo, the chamber opera Ariadne and his last dramatic score, Recke Pa§ije ("The Greek Passion") after Kazantzakis (Notes: Piero della Francesca was a well - known Italian Renaissance painter, 1420 - 1492, who worked quite a bit in the city of Arezzo, population about 74,000 in Central Italy. The heroine of opera Ariadne is king Mino's daughter, who gave Theseus the thread by which he found his way out of the labyrinth.)

Meanwhile he continued the cycle of special chamber cantatas and folksong settings stimulated by the memories of the homeland he had not seen for 20 years. (Bohuslav Martina visited for the last time Czechoslovakia in summer of 1938, before the shameful Munich agreement of the so - called world powers, which dismembered his homeland.) Martina was admitted in 1958 to a Basel hospital in Switzerland, where he was found to be suffering from cancer. While recuperating, he completed ft ecke Pa gije ("The Greek Passion") and set to work on the cantata Proroctvf Izaid govo ("The Prophesy of Isaiah"), his last finished work. (Notes: 'lecke Pa gije were written by Nikos Kazantzakis, Greek novelist 1885 - 1957; Isaiah was a Hebrew prophet of the 8th century B.C.). Composer Bohuslav Martina died next year in 1959 and was buried in the hillside of Schoenenberg in Switzerland, in the garden of his friend and dedicated interpreter of his music Paul Sacher.

From The State Youth Director March Meeting Suggestions Dear Youth Leaders: Your fun type activities in March can center on the theme of St. Patrick's Day. I've included three

games which have to do with St. Patrick's Day. The craft suggested for this month can be an ongoing project.

It will take at least a couple of hours to complete. The choice of fabric does not have to be gingham, but it does make it easier to chart the design. You can also make a group flag by joining together individual blocks of names and designs which are done by each member. Have fun!

Fraternally, Sue Meadows, SYD *** Craft PERSONALIZED GROUP FLAG What you need: Gingham with large checks, ballpoint fabric paint or permanent marker, stick or pole.

How to do it? Be sure to choose a piece of gingham large enough for adding new names later on. Layout the design by using tiles or paper. Lay the names out in a crossword pattern or at random on the paper. Pencil the design onto the gingham, one letter or design to a square. Leave a little space around each letter. Have each person go over the penciled letters with a fabric paint or permanent marker. Let those with short names go first, so each will get to do at least 3 letters. Hem the edges with glue or by machine. Thread a stick or pole through the top hem of the flag for display. *** GAMES Guess the Green: This is a guessing game that both juniors and teens can play. Challenge the teens with more articles and less time allowed to guess. Place ten to twenty green articles on a table or tray.

Allow contestants one to two minutes to look at the objects. Cover or remove the tray. Players write the list of objects from memory. Objects which may be used are a dollar bill, pine branch, green button, etc.

Leprechaun Leap: This can be played. on an individual basis, as partners, or as a team. Let each member take three running steps and jump from a given line (their feet may not be over the line) and see how far they can leap. Measure each jump to find the winner, or combine the scores for partners and teams.

The Magic Word: Decide on a word that has something to do with March and/or St. Patrick's Day. Write it down and put it in a safe place. Tell the members to say their name using a word pertaining to March and/or St. Patrick's Day. Example: I'm Cabbage Connie, Green Gene, etc. Tell them if someone mentions the magic word they will win a prize. If they have an Irish name such as Erin, Patrick, Maureen, Kelly, etc., or are wearing green, they automatically receive a prize at the end of the game. Do not reveal the Magic Word until all have tried. Then award prizes to all winners. *** Dear Youth Club Members, Everyone seems to have enjoyed the puzzles listed in last month's Vestnik.

District VI Changes Youth Camp Location Dear District VI SPJST Members: I am announcing to you that there will be a change in the District VI SPJST Camp.

Because of difficulty in obtaining the Bastrop State Park facilities this summer, we will be camping at Camp Lone Star at La Grange on June 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th; camp will start Tuesday morning and conclude Friday at noon.

You will notify your youth counselor in April if you plan to attend camp.

This will be a new experience to me as well as you. At the April 5, 1986 training, I will give you more details about camping.

I am hoping that District VI will be represented at the annual youth leaders' training session at Camp Lone Star, February 21st through 23rd.

Lodge 117, Robstown Youth Club Activities Dear Readers: The Robstown Youth Club has been kept busy with charity projects..

Clothing project was in October for Department of Human Services; October 26th a Halloween party was held at 6:30 p.m. with a costume contest. Games were played and decorated cake was brought by Susan Carey.

In November, the club met the 23rd with a, good attendance. After the meeting adjourned, the youth made Christmas ornaments which were taken to Westwood Nursing Home.

Guests present at the meeting were Ivinet Ramirez, Julie Siler and Carlos Perales. November birthdays were Jennifer Marek, Donald Marek, Ivinet Ramirez and Carlos Perales.

The month of December is one of our busiest months. The annual project was Christmas gifts to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes; fifty - two gifts were taken there; also fifty - two gifts were taken to Westwood Nursing Home. December 7th was shopping trip to Padre Staples Mall, Christmas Tree Forest and Harbor Lights; December 14th was movie trip; December 15th went to see Nutcracker Ballet at Bayfront Plaza. Our Christmas party was well attended.

The youth brought food items for the food baskets. The youth club fixed four boxes of food (with frozen turkey, flour, shortening, etc.) each valued at $50. These boxes were delivered December 22nd by yours truly to needy people in the Clarkwood area. December 23rd Assistant Youth Leader Kathryn Marek delivered decorated Christmas cakes to Westwood Nursing Home.

This is only a few of the members at the Robstown Youth Club meeting.

Early on December 23rd, I left for Stowe, Ohio to visit my daughter, Dorothy and son - in - law, Richard, and Catherine Kline. I left Corpus Christi at 6:50 a.m., arrived in Cleveland at 12:45 p.m. I took two grandchildren, Donald and Jennifer Marek with us. When the plane landed we saw that everything was covered with snow. Dorothy's inlaws were there also to get us; we all weren't able to get into one car with all the luggage and Christmas gifts.

The grandchildren had a good time playing in the snow. They made a snowman and also had a snowball fight. Christmas Day was spent at Mr. and Mrs. Lonney Kline's home. That night the temperature dropped to 2 degrees, next morning it was 8 degrees.

Dorothy advised that no one is to go out of the house; the grandchildren occupied themselves with the computer. New Year's Eve was spent in Lonney Kline's home where I met many of their friends. It snowed that night but the evening was enjoyable.

At midnight, sausage and sauerkraut was served with plenty of other snacks

and drinks.

We arrived in Corpus Christi January 4th. The weather here was in the 70s; what a difference in temperature in Ohio and here in Texas!

January llth, the youth club held its regular meeting with seventeen youth members, two guests and four adults present. The youth worked on the Vestnik project which is one of their activities each month. Birthday party followed the meeting with January birthdays, Julie Siler and yours truly.

Several members attended the Nueces County Live Stock Show held January 17th.

Valentine party and meeting will be held February 8th. Decorated Valentine cakes will be taken to Westwood Nursing Home, the 13th.

The club welcomed our new members; they are Lisa Hosek, Julie Siler, Alex Landin, Ivinet Ramirez, Carlos Perales and Barbie Brittain.

The monthly January meeting of the Dime Box Youth Club was held Sunday, January 19, 1986. President Chellie Fritz called the meeting to order.

Shawna Lawhon led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Trudy Krenek then gave the secretary's report. There were 26 members present.

We also have two new members, Kurt and Cody Pharis, both of Dime Box. Treasurer Jennifer Gold gave the treasurer's report.

We received an invitation to a New Tabor Youth Club dance; we would like to thank them.

We will be going bowling February 8th. We will leave the hall at 12:30 p.m. and get back at 4:30 p.m. We will eat in Giddings. If you have any questions call our youth leader at 884 1451.

The meeting was adjourned and we ate cake and roller skated.

District IV Director Stanley Broz presented Stacey Branham with a camera for winning the motto and emblem contest in December. He was the winner in the 6 to 9 age division.

Stacey is the son of Susan and Glen Bohnenberger of San Angelo, he attends Fairview Elementary School near there. We're very proud of Stacey.

The upcoming District IV YAD was discussed some; everyone was urged to start their projects.

It also was discussed to make crafts to sell at the District IV meeting in April.

Sister Becan was a resident of Fort Worth for 40 years. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Netek oznamil, le bratr Emil E. Matula je v nemocnici. Jak jsme se pozdeji dozvedeli, likafska prohlidka a zkoug ka dopadly uspokojive, lekafi vg ak uznali za nutne jet dalgi prohlidku, aby byla naprostd jistota, le v neni nebezpend pfekalka.

Bratru Matulovi pfejeme, aby vge dobte dopadlo a mohl se brzo vratit domfi a zase pfijit mezi nas.

Bylo debatovano o novkch smemicich pro zabavni vkbor a po vysvetleni sestra Viola Fajkusovd, pfedsedkyne stanovniho vkboru doporueila, abychom se zmenou stanov vyekali al jak se nove zafizenr osvedei. Debaty se zueastnili: sestry Viola Kurtzovd, Marie Po_ppova, Grace Rohanovd, bratr Joe Spaeek.

Navrh, abychom poekali se zmenou stanov jak bylo ja ujednano v prosinci minuleho roku, podal bratr Emil Rohan, podporoval bratr Joe Stryk a byl jednohlasne pfijat.

Pfedseda fadu, bratr Anthony Trilieek, pfedlolil otazku na zalaeni klubu middele u nageho fadu. K tomu °Mime promluvila sestra Maxine Pavliskovd a pfeeetla dopis, kterk byl rozeslan rodiefun na gi mladele.

Woven ozndmila a podrobne vysvetlila podminky tleastnikir taboteni, ktere bude konano ye dnech 26. al 29.6ervna na tabofi gti HEB. Byla odmenena potleskem.

Pfedseda fadu, bratr Anthony Trilidek, dale pfipomind vkroei nageho fadu v bfeznu a schilzi nageho okrsku v dubnu, kterd se bude konat u nageho fadu. Dotazal se, zda si elenove pfeji postarat se o v gechno anebo, aby, jako jindy, vge bylo objednano (catering).

Schilze byla fizena velmi dobie a vge bylo projednano. Jelikol nebylo jineho na programu, schilze byla odroeena.

"Dobre rano" is used more in the country, while "dobre jitro" is more common in the cities. "Dobre jitro" is becoming more and more common.

Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrktro", which is strictly colloquial.

"Sbohem" has a religious origin.

Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or Jdete) s Bohem". "Jdi" is singular, while "Jdete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God"). The I religious meaning has been slowly lost in the common usage, therefore, it is written now as one word, "sbohem", instead of "s Bohem".

The religious meaning has been largely preserved with the longer form of the same greeting "s Panem Bohem", and, therefore, it is usually written as three separate words with capital letters. Literal translation would be "with Lord God." Occasionally, you may see it written as one word, "spanem bohem".

"Dobrk veer" and "dobrou noc" is used similarly as in this country. The same is true of "na shledanou". ***

"Nazdar" was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting.

This is no longer so. "Nazdar" is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively. When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of "dobrk den" would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with "nazdar". From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of "nazdar" is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American "hello", but also in parting, instead of "na shledanou" or "sbohem". ***

Seminar To Deal With `Buying Farmland' Without question, buying farmland is "a big deal." The decision requires a lot of careful study, and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service has planned a special program to help.

A seminar called "Buying More Farmland" will be conducted January 28th at the Holiday Inn North (west of the airport on Loop 410) in San Antonio beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The seminar will address financial and economic decisions that farmers and ranchers face when considering a land acquisition, points out Dr. Wayne Hayenga, Extension Service economist who is coordinating the program.

Basically, we want to help farmers and ranchers avoid mistakes in purchasing agricultural land, Hayenga points out. All too often, producers end up losing land because mistakes were made during the purchase process.

The seminar will deal with the economics of farm and ranch expansion, ways to finance the expansion while minimizing risk, and the income -- estate tax consequences of expansion.

The seminar will lead off with a discussion on investment considerations, including tangible and financial assets and debt vs. equity investments.

Another discussion will focus on the economics of expansion with reference to land investments.

Other topics will deal with cash flows, risk coverage, financing alternatives, "partnering" with an investor, and income and estate tax options with new land.

Farmers and ranchers who are contemplating land purchases should find this a thought - provoking and informative program, Hayenga points out.
