To measure your insurance needs accurately, you must be clear and understand on what you want life insurance to do. Its basic use should be protection. In other words, life insurance supplies money to take care of your dependents if anything happens to you.

In some cases people do buy life insurance for other reasons besides protection against the loss of income through death. It seems absurd to drink a toast to a multitude of misery and it is equally difficult to dance over the graves of thousands of American boys who had to give the supreme sacrifice, some not even knowing why, while the graveyard called "terrorism" keeps its gates open awaiting still more victims.

A prolonged unhappiness, however, tends to bring up despondency. It is, therefore, in human nature to try to forget, at least for a while and to cheer up, even though the cheers are borrowed and the Happy New Year wishes remain wishes only. Let us make them real!

This could be a much happier year if we could greet its arrival in a peaceful atmosphere while the genius of men could be used for its benefits, instead of its destruction: If we could stop the trading of life for life in "terrorism," in a futile hope for a

stalemate and bring the senseless killing to an end. If we could successfully fight the enemy in our own country by properly dealing with lawlessness masquerading under the pretext of defense of the rights of citizens. If we could make our cities a safe place again in which to live by meeting gangsterism with swift and merciless punishment. If we could convince our leaders that it is in the vital interest of our country to think America first, and if we could re establish the high reputation America held in the world in the past. If we could prove that we are worthy to bear the proud name "An American."

When all these "ifs" become a reality, we shall enjoy not only 1986 but all the new years ahead. For the time being, let us, therefore, keep our fingers crossed and have with us, stepping into the new year, 1986, a sincere hope that we truly are on the threshold of a generation of peace.

May it come to pass! *** By now most of our members and readers are aware of the fact, that 1986 marks the 150th date of the independence for our state and many lodge members are planning to join their local cities in celebrating this commemorating event with various festivities scheduled for the special year.

The City of West (where your editor resides) is also scheduled on the sesquicentennial calendar of events. The Sesquicentennial Committee, with Chairman Al Marchak (member of Lodge 36, West) will center the forthcoming Westfest activities for Labor Day weekend.

March 2nd is designated for the first Sesquicentennial project, with the help of high school clubs to conta;:t local residents for historical objects to display in the city's proposed library - museum.

David Kolar (member of Lodge 54) will be in charge to produce a video documentary on the community's history, which will be shown during Westfest.

Already in process is an oral history project in which elderly residents are being interviewed and their information is being taped and will be filed in a permanent place.

Copies of these tapes will be stored in the library and anyone will be permitted to check out and listen to the tapes.

The Sesquicentennial Committee's major project is to establish a library - museum in West. *** In case some of you are using a kerosene heater in your home or place of business, be sure to burn only grade 1 - K kerosene in it, says the Insurance Information Institute. Colored or cloudy kerosene will give off an odor and smoke. It will also increase indoor pollution and gum up the heater's wick. Never use a substitue, such as gasoline or campstove fuel. Signs of tampering include scratches on, the odometer face and holes in the plastic lens covering the odometer.

Under federal law, when a car is sold, the seller must give the buyer a statement certifying the actual miles on the car. In addition, consumers can ask the seller to show them the mileage statement from the car's previous owner.

A Word About Social Security.

Good Plans Are Available. The growth of the two - income family in the past couple of decades has been phenomenal. The life insurance industry has been watching it all with interest, and has not been tardy in developing plans that have efficiently and economically kept pace.

But the reason so many two - income family insurance programs are outdated usually has little to do with economics. It is, rather, that many working husbands and wives have yet to realize how quickly and completely they have come to depend on twa paychecks.

Once this understanding is reached, though, they generally find that 1980's - style life insurance coverage for both wage earners makes sense and is not an overly expensive proposition. But whatever the cost, the price paid for not having the protection can be considerably steeper. Ask your fraternal insurance representative for details.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME THROUGH MORTGAGE INSURANCE If you're like most of us, you've insured your home down to the last nail. If anything happens to the place, you want our money back. Yes, homeowners insurance is something you wouldn't think of doing without, but you should be aware that it doesn't do the whole job of protecting your investment. Another type of coverage -- mortgage life insurance -- can be just as valuable for people buying their homes.

The purpose of mortgage life insurance is to pay the balance of the mortgage if the insured dies before the obligation is completed. That's an important precaution in this era of 20, 25 and 30 - year mortgages. Untimely death -- the same as fire and flood -can destroy years of hard work, savings and, worse, a family's security.

In many cases, mortgage life insurance is obtained for both spouses.

This is an especially good idea for two - income families where income for paying the mortgage and maintaining the home comes from both wage earners.

Advantages of Mortgage Insurance.

But whether one life is insured or two, this coverage offers plenty of advantages: 1) It prevents the mortgage lender from foreclosing on the family home when the breadwinner dies.

2) It makes certain that the family can stay in their own home, and their own world.

3) It provides a debt - free home which reduces the need for future income.

4) It gives the family an unencumbered asset which may be lived in, sold or rented.

5) It allows the surviving spouse time to make an unhurried decision to sell or keep the home.

5) It saves on future interest payments on the mortgage. The total interest payment on a 10 percent, 30 year loan is more than twice the principal. If a home buyer has a $40,000 mortgage life policy to cover a new $40,000 mortgage obligation and dies during the first year, the insurance would cancel the debt and save the family over $80,000 in interest! (And, of course, the higher the mortgage interest rate, the greater the savings would be.)

Who Sells Mortgage Life. Mortgage life is sold by most mortgage lenders, life insurance companies and fraternal benefit societies. There are, however, sharp distinctions between coverage available through banks and loan companies and that which is sold by insurance companies and fraternal societies. Lending institutions generally offer group credit life protection which is payable to the bank or loan company. Insurance companies and fraternal societies offer individual plans which are paid to the insured's beneficiary. This gives the surviving family the option to pay off the mortgage or to keep making mortgage payments as usual.

Continuing the mortgage may be advisable if the interest rate is unusually favorable, or if the surviving spouse wishes to preserve the Federal Income Tax deduction for interest paid on the loan.

Individual vs. Group Because the mortgage company plan is usually sold on a group basis in which many home buyers are covered under the same policy, the premiums for this type of protection may be somewhat lower than for individual plans sold by insurance companies and fraternal societies. But the coverage may be more costly in other ways. Generally, there is no conversion privilege with group coverage. If the borrower buys another home with another lending company, he or she may have to purchase another mortgage life plan, probably at a higher premium per thousand of insurance. Also, group credit life premiums are usually not guaranteed for the life of the policy. If the company's loss experience changes for the worse, the group rates can go up, too. A mortgage life policy purchased through a life insurance company or fraternal benefit society, on the other hand, can be transferred, and the amount of insurance can be decreased, even increased (with evidence of insurability), depending on the value of the new home.

Furthermore, the premium rate for this coverage is guaranteed.

The versatility of mortgage life available through insurance companies and fraternal societies is another plus factor. Most offer three basic plans: Permanent Mort gage Life.

Permanent plans use cash value life insurance to cover the mortgage obligation. Essentially, this is permanent, level protection to insure a temporary, decreasing need, but there is good reason for doing it that way.

The extra death benefit, which becomes increasingly larger as the mortgage balance decreases over the years, can be used by the surviving

members of the family to cover expenses such as taxes, repairs, utilities and other costs of maintaining a home.

If the policyowner lives to pay off the mortgage, the insurance may be kept in force, cashed in, or converted to a paid - up policy. Meanwhile, the growing cash values in the plan may be used for yet another purpose. If a homeowner with, say, a $40,000, 30 year mortgage buys permanent mortgage life, the cash values accumulated in 20 years should be equal to or greater than the mortgage balance. The cash values in the policy could pay that off 10 years early and save the homeowner thousands of dollars in future interest payments.

Decreasing Term Mortgage Life. A common form of mortgage protection, decreasing term plans feature term insurance designed to decrease in face amount as the mortgage balance decreases, and to expire when the mortgage is paid off. Often, these plans offer a conversion option which allows the insured to stop the decrease in protection at any point along the way by converting the plan to permanent life insurance. Because of their temporary and decreasing nature, these plans have relatively low premiums. However, there is no cash value build - up in this type of insurance, so the actual cost of the insurance protection in decreasing term is typically higher than with permanent plans.

Combination of Permanent and Term. These combination plans, as the name implies, provide a base of permanent life insurance with a decreasing term insurance rider which decreases at approximately the same rate as the mortgage balance. Such plans combine the benefits of a growing cash reserve in the permanent portion of the plan with the flexibility and low premiums of decreasing term.

Conversion options are generally offered with plans of this type, enabling the insured to stop the decrease in the term protection portion -- if desired -- by converting it to permanent insurance. These plans can be arranged so that enough cash will be available to the surviving spouse to pay the mortgage payments if that is the best option at the time.

All homeowners should be aware of how very valuable mortgage insurance is to their financial future -- and to their peace of mind. Ask your insurance representative for details.

MEETING THE COSTS OF A COLLEGE EDUCATION In recent years, revisions in the Social Security laws have had a profound effect on financing the cost of higher education for the young people of this country.

Before the program was revised, the student child of a deceased, disabled or retired person was eligible for Social Security benefits that could have amounted to as much as $25,000 over a four - year period. However, since September, 1982 young people starting to college have not been eligible for any benefit, and benefits for those already in college at that time were phased out effective April, 1985.

The financial outlook hasn't been made any brighter by the fact that another traditional source of tuition money -- grants and student loan programs -- has been drastically reduced or, in many cases, eliminated.

This, of course, makes it harder for most of us to finance our children's college education, and it's even worse for families where an income earner

has died. It is shaping up to be a major problem parents will have to deal with -- a problem aggravated by the high and rapidly rising cost of post secondary education in this country.

As you know, college is extremely expensive these days. If you• figure tuition, fees, books, room and board, the bill for four years can be anywhere from $12,000 for a state university to a whopping $70,000 or more for the top private schools. And, like everything else, the ante keeps going up every year. When you stop to consider the potential cost of not having a college education or marketable skill in today's fiercely competitive job market, however, the costs and the financial sacrifices they entail seem small by comparison.

The problem of setting up a college education fund for the children can be severe when there are two income earners to contend with it -- even worse when one of those income earners is no longer around.

A "New" Old Idea. Private funding, scholarships, part - time students jobs or work/study arrangements and the remaining government tuition aid programs are all possible solutions to the college cost problem, but there is another source of funds for tuition that parents should not overlook. That source is life insurance.

Before 1965 (the year Social Security benefits were expanded to cover eligible full - time students until age 22), life insurance was commonly used to guarantee that enough money would be available to pay college costs if the parents were not around to pay those costs themselves. It was called "College Education Insurance." Also, insurance representatives pointed out that permanent insurance, if purchased early enough, would accumulate cash values which could be used as a source of tuition money if the parents lived. Usually, the college education policies were written on the life of the husband and/or wife.

In view of the removal of college cost benefits from the Social Security programs, this life insurance approach to providing a college education fund is an idea whose time has returned.

How It Works. To get an idea of how this works, let's consider a representative family, John and Mary Smith and their two children, Christine age 10, and Heather age 7. Both of the children are promising students and it is the parents' firm intention to make sure the girls will have the opportunity to attend college, even if John or Mary were to die prematurely.

Both parents have good jobs, and they believe that their incomes and other resources can be used to cover tuition and other costs if both live until the girls have finished college.

However, if either parent fails to live long enough to see that dream realized, they want to be certain there will still be enough money available to pay the college costs for both children. Life insurance on both John and Mary would seem to be the ideal way to provide that important guarantee.

In calculating the amount of insurance they will need, John and Mary Smith and their fraternal insurance representative make the following assumptions: (1) both children will attend a state university where the current cost of a four - year education is $12,000; (2) in case either parent dies prematurely, the life insurance will be used to fund the entire amount of projected college costs for both girls; (3) both children will begin college at age 18; and (4) as in the past 10 years, college costs at

6/VtSTNIX—Wednesday, January 8, 1986 state universities will continue to climb at an average rate of about 9.5 percent a year.

Using these assumptions and doing the simple cost projections on a calculator, the Smiths and their insurance representative determine that in eight years, when 10 - year - old Christine will be starting college, the state university will cost approximately $28,600 for four years. In 11 years, when seven- year - old Heather will be ready to attend, the figure will be about $37,500. The total amount the Smith family will need for a college education fund is about $66,100.

To be on the safe side, the Smiths decide to take out $70,000 of insurance on each parent to guarantee that the money will be there if either parent were to die prematurely before the girls finish college.

Your Own Situation. If you and your spouse are the parents of young children, and -- like John and Mary Smith -- want to guarantee them a college education, your fraternal life insurance representative can show you how to meet that need. Today, with the cost of life insurance dropping dramatically a plan can easily be set up that will fit your budget. Once established, the plan can, and should, be reviewed periodically to make sure that the original college costs and inflation assumptions hold true, and to adjust the coverage if that should become necessary.

Why Life Insurance? Your fraternal life representative will also point out some of the reasons why using life insurance is, indeed, the ideal way for most people to provide a college education fund for their children.

Life insurance is simple and convenient. The right amount of money will be available exactly when it is needed. There are no investments to watch and worry about and the premiums can be added to those you have already budgeted for your family's insurance program. If permanent insurance is used (wholly, or in part), and you live, the growing cash values can be used either as a way to help pay college costs or as a source of funds for the entire family in case of financial emergency.

But most important, perhaps, for this as well as for any of the uses of life insurance, is the guarantee that the plan will do what you intend it to do.

No other financial vehicle can make that claim.

Life insurance may not be the only answer to this problem in every instance, of course, but a carefully considered plan of insurance is often the best way to assure that a specific amount of money will be available to pay college costs exactly when it is needed. And that could be big news for you and your family. Ask your insurance representative for details.

THE ADVANTAGES OF AN IRA ANNUITY Under current tax law, if you earn an income you can put up to $2,000 of it each year into an authorized Individual Retirement Account (IRA) investment, and take an immediate income tax deduction for the full amount. If you're married, and your spouse doesn't earn an income, the limit is $2,250 (called a "spousal IRA"). If you and your spouse both have earned incomes, you can each make the full $2,000 contribution to your own individual IRAs. It's like having your own tax favored pension plan. The money goes in tax free, the interest accumulates tax

free and, in fact, you pay no tax at all on the plan until you begin taking money out of your IRA at retirement.

All Workers Now Qualify. IRAs aren't new, of course. It's just that, prior to 1982, they were available only to people who weren't covered by company pensions. That has all changed. Under present tax law, you can have an IRA even if you are a participant in a company - sponsored pension or profit - sharing plan. All workers -- some 100 million of us -can now have an IRA. And with the generous contributions rules, just about everyone who earns an income should take advantage of these incentives to save for retirement.

New Incentives to Save. Consider, for instance, the incentive for spouses who haven't been working outside the home to take on some part - time employment. People who earn modest incomes are invited to put $2,000 of it -- tax free -- into an IRA. In many situations, people are able to earn income, save all of it (up to $2,000 a year) for retirement, and not move the family's total income into a higher tax bracket. That used to be a problem in cases where the second income was relatively small -- but no more.

The IRA rules also add a new dimension to owning your own business. For example, a spouse who has not been earning an income can now be hired to work in a family business. He/she must do legitimate work, such as typing, filing or keeping the books, but the income from those jobs can all go toward building a tax favored retirement income fund.

Preferential Tax Treatment. How attractive is it to save for retirement through an IRA? Most middle income taxpayers who can put $2,000 a year into such a plan will save anywhere, from $500 to $800 annually on their income taxes (and they don't have to "itemize to take the IRA deductio4 IRA funds accumulate tax free. None of the interest earned goes to Uncle Sam at tax time; all of it can stay in the IRA, which means that your retirement fund grows much faster than, it would in a fully taxed savings plan or investment.

For example, someone in his/her mid - thirties who is putting $2,000 a year into an IRA and earning, say, 10 percent interest on it can count on having approximately $300,000 by age 65. Double that if a working spouse contributes the full amount to his/her own IRA earning 10 percent interest for the same period of time That's a tidy sum, don't you think?

And even though the money is taxed as income when it is withdrawn at retirement, the recipient should be in a much lower tax bracket by then, so it's still a most attractive proposition.

Taking Money Out It's important to note one thing. IRAs are a long term investment. There is a stiff penalty on any funds taken out of an IRA before age 591/2 -- in addition to the normal income tax you'd have to pay. So don't put money into an IRA unless you can afford to leave it there until you retire. Also, withdrawals must start by age 701/2 and have to be at a fast enough rate to be completed by the end of your normal life expectancy.

At retirement, money from an IRA can be received as income (the usual method) or in a lump sum. Most IRA owners arrange things so that their IRA payments begin at the time they retire, when their regular earned incomes stop, so that the money is taxed at their newly reduced rates.

IRA Investment Vehicles. IRAs, can be set up in a number of different ways

which have the approval of the Internal Revenue Service. Fraternal benefit societies and life insurance companies offer an IRA Flexible Premium Retirement Annuity (IRA Annuity, for short). Banks, savings and loans and credit unions have various types of IRA savings accounts or certificate - of - deposit arrangements. Mutual funds and other money management firms also have special IRA investment accounts.

It is important to point out that no single retirement savings plan is best suited to every individual in every situation. Different financial needs and objectives, along with different ages and income levels, can call for different approaches to retirement planning. Various factors such as safety of principal, yield, money experience, management administrative fees and the convenience and flexibility of both pay - in and pay - out methods should all be carefully considered in deciding which IRA investment is best for you.

Advantages of an IRA Annuity. For many people, though, the IRA Annuity available from fraternal benefit societies and life insurance companies earns high marks on all counts. It's a simple approach which gives the owner (annuitant) considerable leeway in deciding how much money to put into an IRA, how often to do it, and how to take money out when the time comes. writing In addition, beyond premium checks, the IRA owner has or management no money administrative responsibilities with an IRA Annuity. The Society's investment management and service departments do all that. And, over the years, IRA Annuities interest earnings have performed competitively with other comparable IRA investment vehicles.

But perhaps the most attractive features of an IRA Annuity for most people are the guarantees provided by the Society. There is no risk involved.

Safety of principal is assured, as are a minimum yield and a pre - retirement death benefit for your named beneficiary (usually the cash value and accumulated interest). The most important guarantee provided by an annuity, however, is a specific income which can never be outlived by you or by your beneficiary. After all, creating a guaranteed income is what an annuity is all about and no other. IRA investment even comes close.

Save for Your Retirement. The passage of recent tax laws has radically changed the area of tax - favored retirement planning. The message from the government is clear: save for your own retirement; don't depend on Social Security benefits or company pension plans alone to see you through.

It's a message worth heeding. If you're ready to do some serious retirement planning, an IRA Annuity is an excellent way to do it. If you're looking for an easy, convenient and safe way to set up an IRA, see your fraternal insurance representative. He or she has an IRA Annuity that may be just what you're after.

Lodge 4 To Meet In January Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, December 8, 1985 at the Grant Building in Hallettsville with lodge President Linda Mikush conducting the meeting.

Gaye Galetka read a resolution of sympathy for our departed member, Hattie Till Ehler.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the November meeting which were approved. There was no correspondence.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave reports.

President Mikush reminded the members that committees for the coming year will be named'at our next meeting to be held January 12th.

Meeting then adjourned.

Janell Chudej of the youth club read a Christmas poem and Co - Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej led the members in singing "Silent Night."

Bags of candy and fruit were given to the officers and youth club members.

Everyone received an apple. A guessing game was won by Betty Kahanek. Refreshments were served and games played,with the youth club providing the prizes. Lunch was then served and enjoyed.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, January 12, 1986 at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. Members are encouraged to attend.

Lodge 29, Taylor Officers Installed Our lodge met Sunday, December 8, 1985 at 2 p.m. with President Edwin Adamek presiding at the meeting.

Members of the youth club presented the flag and led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers was called and they were all present.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read, also the treasurer's and Property Committee's reports were given.

Our lodge received a Christmas card from District II Director Willie E. Kohutek, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, SL President Howard Leshikar, and DYC Frank Klinkovsky and wife, Irma.

Special guest was State Youth Director Sue Meadows.

We had two applicants; they were Timothy Holub and Amy Smith.

President Adamek wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

We had installation of officers, followed by a Christmas program by the youth club.

Lodge 40 Officers Installed In Hillje El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40 met Wednesday night, December 18, 1985 at the SPJST Hall in Hillje for a covered dish dinner and installation of officers.

Members brought side dishes to go with fried chicken furnished by the lodge. There were 175 members and guests present.

A plaque was given to Leona Macha, who served as treasurer from 1976 to 1986.

The youth club presented a Christmas poem and sang Christmas carols for the evening's entertainment. Santa Claus made a special visit to see the youth.

Well, actually, it isn't a new family of officers, it is the same hard - working Some of our active young people joined a group from St. Mark's group of people who keep Lodge No. Methodist Church on a skiing trip to 172 going; they only shifted positions, Red River, New Mexico. Lynn namely: Pflughaupt, Bobby Allbritton, Lee Brother Jerry Dressler is now Pflughaupt, Doris Fabrygal, Gwenda president Brother Dan Berry is 1st vice Wilson, Tracy and Kisten Green, Kelley Sokol, John Cook and Jay president Brother J.V. Thomas (new comer) is Tomchesson left Houston December 26th and returned New Year's Eve. 2nd vice president Sister Vlasta Machann remains Some are first time skiers so they'll have lots of fun and some funny secretary Sister Tennie Walla remains things to tell us.

Friday, January 17th, Renegade will play for the first time at Lodge 88. They play rock music, variety music, plus country/western. If you are a country/western devotee, here is your chance to hear a new band.

The Friday night dances start at 8:30 p.m.; the price is still $4 and it's BYOB. Come out and have a good time.

Vrazel's Polka Band plays Saturday, January 18th. They play all those good oldtime polkas, waltzes plus some country western. That also sounds like a good dance.

Don't forget the lodge monthly meeting Monday, January 13th. We have a meeting and then a social with sandwiches and your favorite beverage served later.

Dear Members and Friends: A fine group of members and guests gathered in Round Top Rifle Associaton Hall Saturday evening, December 14, 1985 for a wonderful Christmas party consisting of baked ham and a great variety of side dishes and delicious desserts.

There was not a business session, but there were a few items that were disposed of. President Harold Bergmann appointed a Serving Committee for January, February and March; namely, Brother and Sister D.F. Bergmann, Garda Siptak, Harold Bergmann and Mrs. Wickle.

President Bergmann thanked all who brought food, prepared the baked ham, brought and decorated the Christmas tree and served the meal.

Soon after these items were discussed, the party resumed with games and the exchanging of gifts.

The remainder of the evening was spent in playing games and merry fellowship.

President Bergmann wished all a very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year.

Our next regular lodge meeting will be January 9 at 7 p.m. in the Warrenton Store Guest Room; with possibly baked ham supplied by the lodge.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Corner Martha Losack is the new resident to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in December. The staff includes Catherine Lukasik (NA), Gay L. Shed (dietary), Jeannette R. Darley (LVN), and Johnathon Foston (maintenance helper).

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond is Eddie Schulz.

We were sorry to lose Pauline Wfielsch who was classified skilled and had to go to another home.

Sunday afternoon, December 1st, the Immanuel United Church of Christ youth group and Volunteers Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortmon and Frances Muzny came to help decorate the home for Christmas. A job well done!

Monday afternoon, December 9th, the Hope Lutheran Church of Beasley came and had services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Wednesday evening, December 11th, the St. Michael's High School came to sing Christmas carols and brought cookies to the residents.

Thursday evening, December 12th, Larry Ognoskie, Fred Gerke and George Loney provided music and singing to the residents. Everyone had a great time.

The Jaycees furnished turkey dinner with all the trimmings at the home !December 13th, for the residents. That evening the residents had their Christmas Party with their families. The Needville Methodist Church Choir, Immanuel United Church of Christ Choir and the St. Michael's Catholic Church Czech Choir came to entertain, followed by an appearance of Santa Claus handing out gifts to the residents sponsored by the Jaycees. Volunteers were Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortmon and Frances Muzny who helped serve refreshments to all. Everyone enjoyed the evening.

Saturday morning, December 14th, the Police Helpers sang Christmas carols and gave a large fruit basket and a huge Christmas card made by the Police Helpers to the residents.

Sunday afternoon, December 15th, the St. Michael's Altar Society came to sing and served refreshments and gave gifts to the residents.

Monday evening, December 16th, the Junior National Honor Society came to sing Christmas carols and gave cookies to the residents.

Tuesday morning, December 17th, the Good Beginning Day Care children came to sing Christmas carols.

Wednesday morning, December 18th, the Lil' Country Play School came to sing Christmas carols.

Friday evening, December 20th, the Lone Star 4 - H Club came to sing Christmas carols and gave a beautiful large cake and a bag to each resident.

Saturday afternoon, December 21st, Lodge 88 Chorus Group from Houston came to entertain the residents with Czech and English singing of Christmas carols and also brought gifts and fruit for the residents. Volunteers were Lydia Hortmon, Edith Schulz, Elva Hastings and Frances Muzny who helped serve the refreshments to all. In the evening the First Baptist Church Choir Acteen came caroling and gave cookies for the residents.

Sunday evening, December 22nd, the Needville Cub Scouts came to

sing and gave each resident a Christmas tree they had made.

Monday evening, December 23rd, residents Tony Ondracek, Hilda Cole, Martha Stuchly, Annie Stavinoha, Moody Flagg, Albina Foroi, Annabelle Schoppe, Emma Tielke, Annie Zich, Martha Wleczyk, Rosalie Sanborn and Agnes Perkins; Paul Legendre (volunteer), Martha Marx (S A.D.), and Harvey Marx (administrator) went to see the decorations at the Richmond State School and also drove through Pecan Grove Plantation area in Richmond.

The same evening the Tiger Cub Scouts of Fairchild came caroling up and down the halls of the home.

Everyone reported a Merry Christmas.

"Happy Birthday" celebrants for the month of December were residents, Mary Faltesek, Olive Harper, Emma Tielke, Victor Bartosh, Cleo Schmerber and Frances Jezek and staff members, Mary Trevino, Tony &tope k, Margie Hall, Gladys Foston, Barbara Caldwell and Theresa Garrett.

The Birthday Party held Friday, December 27th, included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordion and the piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages and the boutonniere. The St. Michael's Altar Society provided the cakes.

Volunteers Melva Hastings and Frances Muzny served the cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area that give services and communion and to the volunteers who do services in the home to the residents for December.

Classes At Westchester-Spring Branch Evening School Czech

Registration for the 1986 spring semester classes in conversational Czech will take place January 6th through January 17th between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and January 14th and January 15th, 1986 between 9 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. at Spring Branch Westchester High School, 901 Yorkchester, Houston, Texas 77079.

Beginner's class, Czech I, will be held Tuesday evenings starting January 28th and the advanced class, Czech II will be held Thursday evenings starting January 30th.

All class hours in the 12 week courses will be from 7 to 9 p.m. each evening. Tuition for each course is $45 plus $5 registration fee.

Genealogy And Heraldry Organization Czech

Americans seeking assistance with genealogical research in Czechoslovakia may wish to contact the Czech Genealogy and Heraldry Organization. This group is composed of over 300 professional and amateur researchers scattered throughout Czechoslovakia. The current president is Vladimir Markl. Meetings are held monthly (except in the summer). Once every three years the organization sponsors a workshop for professional researchers and amateurs and the material from these workshops is then published. The newsletter Zpravodaj, to which all members may submit contributions and queries, is published four times a year.

The organization also publishes other materials dealing with genealogy and heraldry, such as a recent publication which traces the history of the houses and buildings located on the town square of Mora yska Ostrava from the Middle Ages through the 18th century.

The president of this organization, Vladimir Markl i has invited Czech Americans interested in genealogy and heraldry to submit information about their research. He also has offered the help of his organization in assisting Czech - Americans with their genealogical research.

Letters From The Youth Dime Box Lodge 13 YC Holds Meeting Our last meeting was held December 15 at 3 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Jennifer Gold and Monica Spitzenberger led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was called. There were 20 members and 5 adults present.

The secretary and treasurer reports were then given.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Richard Spacek, whose birthday was in December.

Lodge 185 Youth Celebrated Yule, Party Dear Vestnik Readers, We had our regular meeting December 7, 1985 at the home of Amy and Brett Doeppenschmidt and worked on our Christmas projects.

December 19th, we deliverd handmade baker's clay ornaments which were painted and decorated to the Laurel Plaza, a home for the elderly.

December 21st, we had our Christmas Party with the adults. We exchanged gifts, decorated Christmas cookies and had a pinata filled with candy. We also gave tree ornaments (which we made) to each family. Our special guests were Maxine and Bill Pavliska.

December 23rd, we took beaded candy canes we had made to River Gardens, a home for the handicapped and mentally retarded, We also sent a contribution to Amanda Hensley, a local burn victim, age 9.

We hope everyone had a merry Christmas and we wish everyone a happy New Year.

Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 9, Snook, wish to express our deepest sympathy for our departed member WILLIE T. ELS IK. Funeral services for Willie Elsik were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 1985 at the Snook Brethren Church with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was in the Snook Cemetery.

Brother Elsik was born October 1, 1912 in Snook, the son of the late John Frank Elsik and Teresa Kocurek Elsik.

A resident of Burleson County most of his life, he lived in the Snook area where he farmed and ranched.

He was an active civic leader having served as Burleson County Commissioner Precinct 2 for 12 years.

He also was a schoolteacher in early years where he taught at Valney School in the Providence community.

He served on the Snook School Board and was president of the Board. He was manager of the Old River Road Ranch for a number of years.

He was a member of the Brazos Valley Gem and Mineral Club. He was a graduate of Blinn College. He played Semi - Professional baseball for Caldwell in the South Texas Baseball League.

He was an active and faithful member of the Snook Brethren Church, an Elder in the church and a member of the church choir. He also sang in the Czech Quartet. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook.

Brother Elsik was married to Isabel Matcek 29 November 1934 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Isabel Elsik; three sons, William C. Elsik, Sr., Gene N. Elsik, Sr., and Daniel M. Elsik; one daughter, I. Sandra Elsik; eight grandchildren; two granddaughters; and one great grandson.

Pallbearers were Gene Elsik, Jr., William C. Elsik, Jr., Scot Elsik, Curtis M. Elsik, Steven Elsik and Sidney R. Coufal.

Honorary pallbearers were the Elders of the Snook Brethren Church; namely, Ernest Jakubik, Raymond Vajdak, W.H. Giesenschlag, Jr., Johnnie Hein, Clinton Matcek, Moody Faust, Adolph Urbanovsky, Rayfield Slovacek, Joe Blaha, Louis Loehr, Irvin Fleucher, Sr., Leroy Jakubik, Frank Drgac, Alfred Schoeneman, Berhard Vajdak and John Sill, Jr. May our brother rest in peace.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee, on behalf of the entire membership of Lodge Jaromir No. 54 in West, Texas, wish to express our condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother WILLIE T. MRKOS who passed away at a West hospital Saturday, December 28, 1985.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Sunday at West Brethren Church with the Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating and Danny Husak assisting. Interment was in West Brethren Cemetery under the arrangements of Aderhold Funeral Home of West.

Born August 15, 1922, in Penelope (Hill County), Texas, Brother Mrkos was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3819, SPJST Lodge No. 54, Mutual Aid Society No. 4, and RVOS. Brother Mrkos was a member of West Brethren Church and served in the Army during World War II. He was married to Eileen Tlustos in 1980.

Survivors include his widow, Eileen Mrkos of West; his mother, Frances Mrkos of West; and two brothers, Jerry Mrkos of West and Marvin Mrkos of Arlington, Texas.

Brother Mrkos, who attained the age of 63, joined the SPJST Society in February 1946.

THERE CAN BE NO LIES IN MOVEMENT "When you read NOSS, imagine neither a nose nor Gogol — and by no means a cold," Czech mime Ladislav Fialka, National Artist, who celebrated his fiftieth birthday this year, said in the program to his new presentation entitled NOSS. "NOSS is only the name of a guy who lost his mask — a little nose on a rubber band — and became an alien element in the eccentric world of clowns. Deprived of his previous possibilities of existence, he created his own world without a mask, a poetic and at the same time a specific world of a mime. He did this in a world full of masks which can rob people not only of their face and name, but also of life."

NOSS is the twelfth presentation which Ladislav Fialka has written for his ensemble of mimes at the Divadlo Na zabradli and directed since the theatre was founded in 1958.

In the more than zs years of ins professional activity, Ladislav Fialka and his ensemble have toured 55 countries of all continents with the exception of Australia where he plans to go next year.

The classic of the French pantomime.

Marcel Marceau, has described FiaIke's mastery as Baroque style, Czech realism, and his ensemble as the best in the world.

National Artist Ladislav FiaIke's life is content motion, and yet he finds time to teach at the Prague Academy of Arts students of opera singing, opera directing, dancing and choreography, and to head annual international summer courses of pantomime.

The last tones of the trumpet, which the world-famous Czech mime masters as perfectly as his body, died down. A rehearsal at Divadlo Na zdbradli ended and the moment came at which it was possible to reach Ladislav Fialka in his cosy green-room. There is no difficulty in making him talk. I was surprised to find that the great art of mute beauty does not deprive its creators ,of the gift of speech — on the contrary!

— How did you come to be a mime?

"I wanted to do pantomime since my youth. However, there was no special school for mimes in our country, it was impossible at that time to go to Etienne Decroux in Paris, and so I came to my profession in a roundabout way, by way of dancing. I do not at all regret that I studied at the State Dancing Conservatory. I tried to use this school to polish the technique of movement, as the basis of the modern pantomime is nothing but a perfectly mastered technique of movement. Classical ballet taught me discipline and systematic work, and folk dancing was priceless as a live source of art. While at the school, I and my equally enthusiastic colleagues gave pantomime performance based on librettos of jean Gaspar Debureau. In 1954, we scored great success at 2ofin at the state-wide exhibition Laughter Ruins and Creates. That was actually the first time in several decades that Prague saw a pantomime in its authentic form. Our fans were such personalities as Viterslav Nezval, Vaclav

Trojan and jiff Trnka. Soon after, in 1958, we launched the era of pantomime here at Divadlo Na zabradli where we have been playing ever since."

— What has been influencing you, in addition to dancing, in the search for your own expression?

"The pantomime uses the body in particular as an instrument of expression. It thus places no demands on requisites in the terms of amount, but it does place big demands on the mime himself. For him, the binding and determining requisite is his own body and its perfect and conscious control. Figuratively, the position of the pantomime among other arts may be explained as dance being its sister and acting its brother.

When I graduated from the conservatory, I was taught a huge lesson by jiff Trnka, National Artist, who offered me a fantastic artistic task — work as choreographer for the animation of his puppet film The Midsummer Night's Dream. jiff Trnka knew no rompromise

at work, he placed high demands and was precise.

Naturally, I was also interested in the manner of my profession abroad. I met with Marcel Marceau, whom I hold in high esteem and with whom we are now great friends, the first time in Paris in 1956."

— How do you guide your collaborators and successors?

"The best school is work on the stage, work for the audience. Those who come are graduates of the dancing conservatory who have a talent for pantomime, or I select my colleagues from pupils at the four-year popular conservatory attached to the Popular School of Arts in Prague, which offers studies of the pantomime. I am very grateful for the opportunity given to the pantomime by our State in the form of the permanent stage in Prague, Divadlo Na zibradli.

We are not haunted by an uncertain social position, we are not dependent on the financial effect of performances, and we can devote our time fully to the

development of the pantomime as a characteristic art."

— We believe that the popularity of the pantomime is on the rise in our country as well as in the world. What, in your view, is the attraction of this art at the present time?

"The present audience claim their due. They want an ever more complicated art. They are amused by the arrangement of playing at reality which the modern pantomime is, in essence.

Krásná a na svých osmnáct let i velice oduševnělá, vzdělaná a inteligentní žena Smetanu doslova oslnila. Za necelé dva měsice požádal o Bettininu ruku. Svatba se konala 10. července 1860, tedy přesně za rok ode dne, kdy Smetana po iétech opět přijel na Lamberk. Z poznámek v deniku Bedřicha Smetany, vystaveného dnes v Lamberku v jeho památníku, vysvítá, jak velice silně se do mladičké Bettiny zamilo­ val. Avšak také, že ona jeho city příliš ne­ opětovala. Lze říci, že i roční odklad svatby byl jejím přáním. Jsou to zajimavé doklady o všem, co se tehdy s Bedřichem Smeta­ nou dělo, jak se snažil rychle na milovanou Kateřinu zapomenout a najít novou matku pro svoje dvě dcerky. Ale jsou to I doklady, které asi mnohého návštěvníka překvapí.

Deset dni po své svatbě odjeli novoman­ želé do obce Kamýk pod zříceninou hradu na Litoměřicku, na statek dr. O. Pollaka, který měl za manželku další z Ferdinandio­ vých dcer - Hedviku a stal se tedy SmetaNa snlmku bysta Bedficha Smetany pi'ed jeho novým švagrem. Smetana se na tuto nápam&tnikem Lamberk v O!>řistvi, vštěvu velice těšil, protože Kamýk leží v krásném Středohoří. Smetanovy deníkové zápisky však hovoří o tom, jak velice byl zklamán - ne snad návštěvou či hostiteli, ale svou vlastni manželkou. FILM O PODZEMNÍ TOVÁRNĚ Režisér Jiří Věrčák a kameraman Vladimír Holomek z Hlavní redakce publicistiky a-dekumentaristiky Cs. televize natáčejí film o někdejší podzemní továrně nacistického válečného průmyslu "Richard" v Litoměřicích v severních Cechách.

Film "Richard" nemá být úplnou historií vzniku a funkce podzemní továrny, ale snaží se objasnit některé okolnosti týkající se tohoto objektu pře<l koncem druhé světové války. Při příležitosti natáčení se uskutečnilo v Památníku Terezín (za druhé světové války koncentrační tábor, ke kterému továrna Richard patřila) setkání historiků s dosud žijícími pamětníky. (ro)

Spotlight On Health HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR? Should the government be able to tell you how often you can see your doctor? Medicare may soon be setting new guidelines which would reflect what the government thinks is an appropriate number of visits by a physician in a rehabilitation hospital.

Many concerned Americans, including professionals in the rehabilitative health field, disagree with this;concept.

They are working to ensure that patients in rehabilitation facilities are able to see a doctor as often as necessary.

The purpose of medical rehabilitation is restoration of people disabled by disease or injury to maximum physical function through a comprehensive, integrated program of medical and social services. The principle types of cases treated by rehabilitation medicine are spinal cord injuries, stroke, head injuries, amputation, arthritis, hip fractures, burns and other neurological conditions. Hospital - based medical rehabilitation is appropriate for severely disabled patients who require 24 - hour nursing care; patients who are less disabled may be treated at a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility or a skilled nursing facility.

Setting a limit on the number of visits by a doctor to a patient in a rehabilitation facility would not work, for a number of reasons, according to the National Association of Rehabilitation Facilities (NARF). It cannot be predicted at the time of admission just how the course of the patient's treatment will progress. It is important for a patient in a rehab facility to be regularly examined and re - evaluated, and the course of care can be unpredictable. The frequency of physician visits, consultations and evaluations in a rehab facility must be determined by the patient's ever changing condition.

Health experts say the number of times a patient sees a physician should be determined by the needs of the patient, his or her physician and the family -- not be arbitrary government rules.

The bonds have face values ranging from $50 to $10,000. *** Check all hospital submitted charges before paying, urges the Health Insurance Association of America. A recent report showed that over 90 percent of hospital bills in an audit conducted over the past two years contained errors. The study, by a well known service firm, covered over 3,000 bills from hospitals in approximately 41 states. Of those with errors, about 97 percent included charges that couldn't be substantiated as being for services actually rendered.

Once the errors were discovered, the bills were reduced by an average of 4.9 percent, or $1,254. ***
