Beginning This is the beginning of a New Day. Fate has given me this day to use as I will.

I can waste it or grow in its light and be of service to others.

But what I do with this day is important because I have exchanged a day of my life for it.

Through the years people have observed the New Year holiday in traditionally different ways. Yet no other holiday reflects so universally man's common hope for a year of happiness and well - being and his desire for the warm companionship of his fellow men.

This spirit of hope and brotherhood has most often expressed itself in customs of eating, merry - making and visiting with friends. It remained for United States to add its own flavor to the world's New Year customs.

Sports - loving Americans assigned their most popular classics to New Year's Day and began to cheer for their favorite teams and the new year at the same time. The Rose Bowl college football game, following the famous Pasadena (California) Tournament of Roses, got its start in 1916 and set the pattern for big and little "bowl" games throughout the nation.

Unusual as are some American observances, however, a great body of New Year festivities engaged in here is inherited from Europe. In France and Scotland, New Year's Day became and remained the most important festival of the year --- a-time for exchanging gifts, cards and visits among relatives and friends. Scottish children shouting "Hogmanay" flood the streets on New Year's Eve and demand cakes and fruits from the neighbors.

After the evening's meal on New Year's Eve in Lithuania, two or three masked people carrying flaring torches enter a house in the village where they eat, drink, dance and sing. When they leave, their host and hostess, also masked, accompany them to the next house. Before the convivial night has ended, the torch - lit procession includes most of the village.

In England a glass of wine and a slice of bun loaf are rewards for visitors who "first - foot" (arrive first) at a home following the birth of the New Year. A "first - foot" brings with

him the traditional symbols of warmth and prosperity --- coal, bread and salt --- and is welcomed because he "lets in" the New Year. Representing the old year, too, he leaves by the back door.

The New Year celebrations in the United States, like so much else in this varied land, are a blending of the old and new. In this amalgamation lays our strength and promise as a nation.

It is this basic aspect of our life that especially interests the friends and relatives abroad to whom our millions of letters have gone during this Holiday Season. ***

While you raise a drink and sing "Auld Lang Syne" when the clock strikes 12 on New Year's Eve, people all over the Earth celebrate in different ways.

Celebrating the first day of a new year is an age - old custom. Nearly all the people have marked the coming of the year. However, the time selected as New Year's Day has varied widely.

The First Day has been celebrated as early as the autumnal equinox, about September 21st, and as late as the summer solstice, about June 21st.

In most European countries during the Middle Ages, March 25th was the beginning of the New Year. And legend has it that El Cid, the great hero .of Spanish liberation from the Moors, once won a great battle on New Year's Day by giving his tired horses generous gulps of sherry the night before.

The Russian people, long ago, gave the New Year a roaring welcome with a hundred cannon shots at midnight.

In ancient China, people took a different approach to the First Day. They cleaned house, paid debts and closed their shops. Then they shot off their firecrackers and who can ever forget a New Year's in Chinatown of a big American city, with its colorful procession and fiery paper dragons breathing good cheer to everyone.

Near China, in old Japan, New. Year's was a time for everybody to don new clothes, take three days off from work and visit their friends. Each gatepost would be adorned with green pines and bamboo. And over each door would hang red lobsters, crabs and scarlet tangerines, standing for long life and happiness.

Not to be outdone, Italians just consider January 1st as part of their Yuletide festival and so revel until Twelfth Night, 12 days after Christmas.

In France, New Year's Day is so singular that adults let Christmas pass by and exchange presents on January 1st.

Tradition has it that in Scotland, the first one in a house on New Year's Day gets a big, big bear hug. Why? Because he has brought the host good luck.

Midnight Scot celebrators carry cakes and spiced ale to wish their host a good year.

And the same to you!

Are you thinking about retiring in 1986? If you wish, you may start receiving Social Security benefits as early as age 62. However, to get full benefits, one must work until you are 65 years of age. If you retire between 62 and 65, your benefit rate is permanently reduced because you are likely to get monthly payments over a longer period. The size of the reduction depends upon the number of months you get benefits before you turn 65. For example, the reduction amounts to 6.67 percent at age 64, 13.33 percent at 63 and 20 percent at 62. ***

From The President's Office Dear Fellow SPJST Members: Your response to our request for funds to be used to renovate the Statue of Liberty has been overwhelming.

Most lodges are meeting or exceeding their personal lodge goal.

Since we would like to see 100 percent participation from all our SPJST lodges, this is just a reminder to you who have not responded: Remember that the fund drive will end December 31, 1985.

CPS Receives Christmas Check From SPJST Lodge

By Pam Allen [From Cleburne Times - Review -partially edited by Vestnik editor] Newly - appointed Johnson County Child Protective Services Supervisor Janice Allen received a $500 donation from SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson to kick off Christmas contributions for the children, CPS is responsible for.

We have several organizations who assist us each year by providing Christmas gifts for our foster children as well as those we have placed in institutions. We even provide for those children in our case loads who are underprivileged, Allen explained.

This year, we have 30 children in foster care, three in institutions and we have many mothers separated from husbands who have sexually abused their children, putting extra financial burdens on them, Allen continued.

Money collected by CPS is used to buy Christmas and birthday gifts for older children.

We get lots of toy donations for younger children, but the teenagers are left out, Allen said. So if we have cash donations we can afford to buy them something also.

Among the organizations which have assisted child welfare in the past, Allen said, are: the Rotary Club which sponsors a Christmas Party for foster children early in December every year; Abate Motorcycle Club, which rides in a caravan to Johnson County and provides gifts for children in their homes; a Keene Seventh - day Adventist Church; and last year, Toys For Tots collected many toys that the GM factory donated.

We have 50 children in Johnson County, from a baby to an insecure teenager, who will experience Christmas away from their natural families this year. These children have been removed from their own homes because of abuse or neglect; children who are experiencing fear and mistrust, a letter from the Johnson County Child Welfare Board reads.

Any organization or individuals intending to contribute to this cause are asked to do so by December 10 if possible. Checks should be made payable to Johnson County Child Welfare located at 113 W. Chambers, Cleburne, Texas 76031.

Lodge 6 Donates To SOL The annual meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 at Cottonwood was held Sunday, December 1, 1985 at 3 p.m.

President Dobecka called the meeting to order by asking Kevin Dobecka to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Pledge.

Roll call of officers was called with Treasurer Stella Perez being absent due to illness. We hope she gets to feeling better soon:

There were 27 members present with 2 guests Janet and James Gerik.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Sc'huetz reported that everyone came out and did a good job on decorating the hall for Christmas. She thanked everyone who helped. The hall looks very nice.

The youth donated to the Statue of Liberty Fund. We will be taking cakes to the rest home December 4th. The youth will be taking gifts to the rest home residents December 20th at 7 p.m., with eating pizza afterwards at the hall. The youth will present their Christmas program after supper tonight. We hope everyone will enjoy it, concluded Sister Schuetz.

President Dobecka thanked everyone who came and worked on the 2 work days designated in November.

There are two more work days in December; 7th and 14th. We need everyone to come out and help.

After the meeting was adjourned, a small auction was held to raise money for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. We would like to thank everyone who donated items to the auction and we want to also thank everyone who bid and bought the items; the auction made'$100 to donate to the worthy fund. Again, thank you to everyone.

Then all of us enjoyed a delicious supper of baked ham and all the trimmings. The youth presented a nice program with Santa Claus arriving.

Our next Board of Trustees meeting will be held Friday, January 3, 1986 at 7:30 p.m. Our next monthly meeting will be Sunday, January 5th at 1 p.m.

This will be my last newsletter; there will be a new reporter next year. I want to thank everyone for their support during my years of being reporter. I have enjoyed being reporter for this lodge. I wish good luck to my successor, Lanette Hykel.

At this time, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Elects Officers Dear Members: New Tabor Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting December 1st with all officers present.

Resolutions were read for Leroy Zavodny, Sr., Lydia Calvin and Paul Valigura. May our departed brothers and sister rest in eternal peace.

Our Memorial Services were held December 1st at 6 p.m. Brother Howard Lesihkar eulogized the members we lost this past year. The youth presented a Christmas program and the meal was a turkey dinner with all the trimmings; it was enjoyed by all. A special thanks to Helen Paul who was kitchen chairperson and also to all her helpers.

Our next meeting will be January 5th at 2 p.m.

Lodge 18 Installs

1986 Officers Elgin Lodge No. 18 held its December 17th meeting with Roy Simank, newly - elected president, presiding due to the absence of the president and vice president. Brother Curtis Young led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers' and committees' reports were given and accepted as presented.

Lodge 18 had its Christmas Party on December 15, with Lee Roy Matocha furnishing the good music his band plays. A very nice turnout, with food served to all, in a beautifully decorated hall, gave all present, the Christmas spirit.

We, at Lodge 18, extend to all our invitation to come be with us New Year's Eve. King of Swing will be playing, admission $10 per person, 8 to 12 p.m. A very good dance floor and plenty of room to dance on, with friendly people to greet you when you arrive.

Holds Annual Meeting Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, December 8, 1985 at Vrana's cabin, with President Albert Olsovsky presiding at the meeting and leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag,

followed by a moment of silence for Albert Staha and also other deceased members.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read; the treasurer's report was also given.

A motion was made and seconded that we contribute 10 cents for every member for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, which amounted to $27.10 A discussion was held about the improvements of our lodge building needs. A motion was made and seconded to go ahead with some minor improvements, such as fixing the windows and leveling the building, but the major improvements, which includes a new roof and painting of the building, were tabled until next year. A discussion was held whether the members would like to contribute to our financial needs with local dues being collected, perhaps 10 cents a month. The officers would like to hear from all our members as to how they feel about dues being collected or any suggestions they may have as to how we could help our lodge's financial needs, so we can keep our building in good condition.

Election of officers was held with all present officers being re - elected.

After the meeting refreshments and lunch were served.

Makes Donation Dear Readers: Our December meeting was called to order by President David Vanicek. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the flagbearers.

Minutes of the November meeting were read and approved.

Various committee chairmen gave their monthly reports.

President Vanicek thanked everyone who had a part in the Christmas dinner for its success. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the food was great.

New members to our lodge are Gery Hollas and Marsha Andel, transfer is Margie Frenzel; we're glad to have you as members and hope you can join in our lodge activities.

Those celebrating anniversaries in December are Jerry and LaVerne Cabla, Joe and Lorene Haisler, Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska, Raymond and Doris Coots are celebrating their 25th anniversary.

Birthday celebrants are Rodney Posvar and Arleen Tschoerner. We hope you all have a wonderful day.

The members decided to donate money to the Statue of Liberty to help renovate the statue.

Carol Chervenka gave the youth report and thanked everyone for helping her and Johnny during their years as youth leaders.

Dan Sebek resigned as vice president for 1986. A new vice president was elected at the meeting; our new vice president is LaVerne Cabla.

Congratulations! For the first time in the Lodge No. 24 history, there is an all woman panel of officers.

The Board of Trustees' meeting is scheduled for January 13th at 7:30 p.m.; NO December meeting is planned, all old and new trustees are to attend this meeting, election of chairmen and secretary will be held.

All the outgoing officers gave their appreciation to the members for their support and help throughout the years.

25, Ennis Honors Deserving Members Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: At 8 p.m. December 12, the meeting was called to order by President James Whitfill. Sergeant - at - Arms Garry Mizell led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Recording Secretary Kay Kovar read the minutes of the last meeting and these were approved as read. In correspondence, a letter was received from Supreme Lodge explaining about the Statue of Liberty Fund. It was voted to participate. The lodge will pay 10 cents for each member. Also, pamphlets on scholarships which the Supreme Lodge awards to deserving students each year.

Sister Emma Trojacek made her treasurer's report. It was favorable and was accepted without question.

On the sick list are Dorothy Langer, Antone Cikanek and Vicki Moucka. A speedy recovery is wished to each of you!

In business carried over from last meeting, Kenneth Krajca was voted by acclamation as our new vice president.

The recording secretary position is still pending.

Our new member for the month is Robin Nicole Spurgeon and adding on insurance are Amy Lynn Zapletal and Scott Ryan Honza. Welcome and congratulations!

Congratulations, also to our new "Mr. and Mrs. SPJST" Willie and Hazel Laza. They are very desering of the honor. Plaques were presented to the 1985 officers. I'm sure everyone will agree that the officers have done a superb job under the leadership of President James Whitfill and, ever by his side, Winnie. Thanks for a job well done!

Starting in January, the new officers will take over the reins to guide the lodge; we hope for another successful year. Good luck to President Johnny I. Krajca and all the other officers.

80, Holland To Hold Installation Of Officers Lodge

The Taiton Lodge No. 30 held its regular meeting and Christmas dinner December 1st at the Taiton Community Center.

Prior to the meeting, members enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner with all the trimmings; the dinner was also complemented with various assorted pastries that were delicious.

After the meal, the members had their meeting followed by election of officers. All of them were re - elected.

Dear Members and Friends: Well, this year of 1985 will soon be history and I am sure to some of you it was a year fulfilled with your wishes, and to some of us it was not as you wish it to be, but that's life 's journey.

Our December 1st regular monthly meeting was called to order by President D.I. Bohac at 3 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge 80 Hall.

All members present were asked to rise and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. The president then asked our members to remain standing for a moment of silent tribute to our deceased Lodge 80 members.

Roll call of officers showed all present.

Next order of business was the reading of the minutes of our November 1985 meeting. They were accepted by the membership as read by the secretary.

In correspondence, a thank you card from the Douglas Barabas family for flowers for Douglas Barabas's funeral, and a Christmas card from District II Director Willie E. and Mrs. Kohutek were acknowledged.

In other business, Secretary Glen Latham gave a good report of our lodge's various departments.

There was no other business to come before this body. Our president announced the election of officers for Lodge 80 for 1986. The officers were all elected by acclamation, namely, D.I. Bohac -- President Adell Horelica -- Vice President Glenda Liles -- Financial Secretary Glen Latham -- Secretary/Treasurer __ • Barabas, Jr. Joe Reporter/Honorary President The installation of officers and appointment of various committees, will take place at our January 1986 meeting.

The president thanked all our members for the nice cooperation he had during this past year.

Dear Members and Friends: Our December 8th meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek at 2 p.m., following our delicious turkey and dressing dinner and Christmas Party.

Jo Ann Morgan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Vlasta Nowotny installed the local lodge officers.

All officers were present, and all reports were accepted as given.

Secretary Mary Werner read thank you notes from the Charlie Horelica and Lillie Teykl families. She also read a very nice letter commending the faithful workers of Lodge 81 from an anonymous donor who also sent a donation to our lodge. Thank you Mr. "A" from all of us.

Brother Herbert Nowotny reported that the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville will be enlarged.

My apology to Victor Werner for leaving his name off the Entertainment Committee in my last month's letter.

Our thanks to Willie Mae Kuykendall for preparing the delicious turkey and dressing.

Since there were no children present at the Christmas Party, Edwin Susan passed out bags of goodies to everyone.

Our next meeting will be January 12th at 2 p.m.

We will have roast beef and sausage meal; the ladies are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert. The dinner will be served at 12 noon.

Many thanks to our youth for the lovely Christmas program last Sunday, also our gratitude to District III Director Sid Pokladnik, who installed our lodge officers before the program got under way.

Somehow, in naming the officers in my last article, our youth leader's name, Sister Bessie Petr's name, was omitted. I apologize. I know it was that last cold spell that just froze my thinking straight off the paper. I also forgot a bunch of plants to freeze and our poor cat spent the night in our freezing garage because I closed the wrong door, but all is not bad, no more crickets, no more sleepless nights listening to them make funny noises with their legs under the dresser, hidden in a corner under a piece of paper, under the refrigerator or heaven only knows their hiding places -- those rascals cleared out to parts unknown when that norther raced into Dallas, but I bet they traced their path because come next July there will be at least 2 or 3 playing hide - and - seek with me as they jog those legs together making music only they enjoy.

Remember Vice President Cheri Petr who presided at Monday's meeting, we thank her, she reminded us the next lodge meeting is January 20th at 7:30 p.m. Initiation of new members is February 15th, and our lodge anniversary is March 16th.

133 Held Christmas Party Lodge

San Antonio Lodge 133 held their Christmas dinner December 15th. The very good dinner was served at 12:30 p.m., even the eggnog, etc. were good.

Watching Dallas Cowboys football game was slightly interrupted due to the lodge having a short meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Trilicek who also led our membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and remembering our loved ones with a silent moment.

Minutes and treasurer's report were dispensed with during this meeting.

Roll call of officers revealed all were present.

Various committee chairmen gave their reports which all were accepted as read.

President Trilicek appointed the Auditing Committee; namely, Chairman Viola Kurtz, Emil Rohan and Emil Matula; also, due to changes in our Social Committee, President Trilicek appointed a committee on the local Rules & Regulations to bring date. The R&R them up to Committee consists of Chairman Viola

Sister Marcella Kleprlik congratulates Cathy and Rick [Lodge 133 anniversary couple] on their 5th anniversary. A beautiful corsage was pinned on Cathy.

The changes will be submitted to the membership for approval at our January meeting. Members were also appointed on the Birthday Committee.

Installation of officers ceremony took place during our meeting; President Trilicek appointed Brother Emil Matula as the installing officer.

All lodge officers were re - elected for the new year. Appointment of flagbearer was Sister Viola Fajkus also for the coming year.

On the sick report, Sister Miloslava reported that she was entering the hospital this week for an operation.

Members are urged to contact her and visit her if possible.

President Trilicek reminded us that our next meeting will be January 20th at the hall, 1314 Fair Avenue. We hope to have an extra good attendance. We will be privileged to have SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas who will speak to us on two very important issues; the

direct billing and annuity program.

These topics have been talked about quite frequently, so we ask our members to come to the meeting because this is your chance to ask questions; knowing Brother Mikulas, I am sure he will be able to help out with information that you have been asking for.

San Antonio Lodge 133 will be hosting the District VII spring meeting. We are assured that SL Vice President Bernie Gebala will be our guest and main speaker.

Dear Members: Our December II, 1985 meeting (election night) of Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Bill Hutka.

Minutes were read and approved.

Martha Cummings, business manager for Senior Citizens Activities, is receiving a $250 check from Lodge 177

Otis Beck and Bill Hutka were nominated for president. Otis Beck is the new president.

Helen Bland and Phillip Weadock were nominated for first vice president. Helen Bland was elected first vice president.

Louis Driska, Bruce Tomastik and Edward Bartek were nominated for second vice president. Louis Driska was elected second vice president.

It was voted to let Helen Bland be financial secretary until direct billing takes over.

Josie Tomastik was elected treasurer by acclamation.

Dorothy Lisenbe was likewise elected by acclamation.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik was also elected by acclamation.

Board of Trustee members elected were: Edward Bartek Bill Hutka Dorothy Lisenbe Jerry Tomastik Othean Jezek The Christmas Party had a good turnout and everyone enjoyed themselves even though the weather was terribly cold.

Year's Eve Party Planned At Lodge 183 New

Sonjanette Crossley, coordinator for Disabled Children, is accepting a $500 check from Bingo Chairman Otis Beck on behalf of Lodge 177, Academy.

All chairpersons' reports were good.

Trustees' report revealed that the holes in the parking lot have been repaired.

Two new members Dorma Jean Fulton and Michalene Sefcik were accepted.

The youth club had 17 members present.

There was no further business so we went right into election of officers. Pat Tomastik and Othean Jezek were appointed to count the ballots; 38 members were present.

Dear Members: The Christmas Party held Sunday, December 8th was a big success and for all of you who didn't come, you missed a good time; the music by the Czech Mates kept the party lively and dancing all afternoon. If anyone remained calm in the midst of all that confusion, it was simply because they didn't understand the situation. Our hats go off to Lambert Pustejovsky for the delicious barbecue dinner and for all the helpers who made the day a success; also to the Decorating Committee for making the hall beautiful and to Phill Boyle, Jr. for the art creations on the walls; thanks again for all of your hard work.

Lodge 88 Birthday Club Report Our December 11 meeting was opened by President Pearl Hanka reading, "What is a Friend?" We have really enjoyed all your readings and will miss them since you gave up your presidency. Maybe, once in a while, you will treat us?

Another good financial report was given by Treasurer Lillie Spies.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut reported sending birthday cards and get well cards. I'm happy to report that Sister Minnie Bravenec and George Taake doing well after eye surgery.

President Pearl Hanka thanked hostesses (and our spouses Homer Alexander, Dub Pulley and Mike Trefell) for serving a delicious Christmas dinner December 3rd. All officers of the lodge, board of trustees and Birthday Club Sisters' spouses were invited.

All cake donors during the past year were also thanked.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: This is a reminder of our meeting being cancelled for the month of January, since New Year's Day falls on the first Wednesday of the month.

The December meeting was attended by 36 members and guest, Billye Starr.

The birthday members were Ann Sustala, Janie Allen, Agnes Reznicek, Camille Bolcer and Marie Tesar.

The members' wishes were to keep the same officers for the year 1986.

Many of us wish to extend our congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. John Banfi (parents of Henrietta Milan) who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary December 29, 1985 with a buffet - reception at Sokol Tabor in Berwyn. Illinois. Many of us would have enjoyed celebrating this occasion with them, but the miles are just too far.

Those members and friends who attended the SPJST Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 Christmas Party December 8, 1985 will all agree that the social hour, buffet dinner and polka dance was enjoyed by everyone. Thank you, Lodge 183, for making the party a success and the 4 lodges are now committed to another four - year rotation of Christmas parties.

I guess that in everyone's lifetime, at least one great secret or surprise has prevailed. Petite Bessie Reames of Dallas had that experience on her birthday party with a delicious dinner in Ennis that was "pulledoff" by her husband and her sister, Mrs. John Barto and Mrs. Barto's daughters December lst. A beautiful affair with family and many friends present.

We were indeed saddened to learn that Lad Maly had a tragedy in his family. His brother, Joe, and his wife were involved in a car accident in Oklahoma. In fact, they were hit in the rear of their car by a speeding automobile. Joe was injured, and his wife, Alice, was killed.

We express our sincere condolences to Mrs. Liddie Pavelka of Dallas, on the loss of her mother, Mrs. Christina Zemanek, age 94 years. In 1983, Mrs. Zemanek was honored as "Queen of the Day'.' at the State Fair of Texas on Czech Day. Have each guest pick a balloon and break it. Have him read his fortune out loud.

Heart Toss Make five heart - shaped rings of heavy wire (such as coat hangers). The hearts should be about four inches in diameter. Three upright sticks about a half inch in diameter and six inches high are fastened on a board which is placed about six feet in front of the position in which the player stands.

Dowel rods may also be pushed into a piece of styrofoam to stand upright.

One of the sticks is labeled "Happiness," another "Wealth" and a third "Love." Those throwing three or more hearts over the sticks receive 25 points. Two ringers earn a score of 10 points and five points are given to anyone throwing one ring over the stick.

Funnel Catch Round up a tennis ball (or rubber ball about the same size) and a funnel with a mouth 4 inches to 6 inches in diameter. The object of the game is to bounce the ball on the floor, then to the wall, and catch it in the funnel on the rebound from the wall (without letting it bounce). Each player gets five tries. To score, count five points for each catch.

Let me begin by thanking the people who have been my assistants; namely, Kathryn Adamek, Ronnie Reiger, Donna Pasemann and my wife, Geraldine Steger, who has been most helpful. I would also like to thank the members of Lodge 29 for all their support for me and the youth club.

I have worked with different youth organizations over the years, but the SPJST Youth Club is the best.

Held Meeting The December meeting was held Sunday, December 15, 1985. Treasurer Jennifer Gold called the meeting to order.

Flagbearer Monica Spitzenberger led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Trudy Krenek then read the secretary's report. There were 20 members and no visitors present.

Jennifer Gold then gave the treasurer's report.

We will be going Christmas caroling to the Hennesy Nursing Home in Giddings. We had planned to go Sunday, December 22nd and we agreed to leave at 2:30 p.m. from the hall. We planned to give them crafts we made at the Slumber Party.

The birthday celebrant of the month was Richard Spacek. We sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

We then discussed sending a get well card for Mr. Claude Flippin. The Flippins have done so much for our youth club and we'd like to say "thank you." We would also like to thank Mrs. Susan Skrabanek, our district youth counselor, for sending our club a Christmas card, "thank you!"

We would like our club to be thinking about a money - raising project.

Door prizes were won by Michael Whitsel, Monica Spitzenberger and Sue Ellen Flippin. They received a book of Life Savers candy.

The meeting was adjourned, Santa came and we exchanged gifts.

13, YC Holds Slumber Party

Dime Box Lodge 13 held its yearly Slumber Party Friday, December 6, 1985 at the SPJST Lodge 13 Hall.

Everyone had a lot of fun. We made Christmas nick - nacks for the people of the nursing home.

Everyone also had a lot of fun whether it was playing ball or watching movies.

Then everyone in the 4th grade and up went on a midnight hike through Dime Box. It was a lot of fun!

Funeral services were held for Sister Christina Zemanek of Dallas at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, December 7 at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel with Dr. Jerry Autrey officiating. Services were also held in Bay City, Texas at 2 p.m.

Sunday, December 8 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Holden officiating.

Burial was in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Sister Zemanek was born December 18, 1891 in Jedli, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, to John and Anna (Jurecek) Huff.

Sister Zemanek was a resident of Blessing for 55 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Liddie Pavelka, Martha Johnston and Sidney Bridewell, all of Dallas; two sons, Joseph Zemanek, Jr. of Dallas and Victor Zemanek of Blessing; a sister, Frances Vita of Ennis; two brothers, Ernest Huff of Dallas and Victor Huff of Corpus Christi; 14 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Victor Joe Zemanek, Jerry Zemanek, John Zemanek, Robert Zemanek, Donald Genzer, Torn De Kunder, Darrell Crain, Dennis Chastain, Mark Nunley and Jim Snyder.

Arrangements were by Taylor Brothers Funeral Home of Bay City.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 35, Elk, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother MARVIN [TUFFY] MILLS, who passed away December 4, 1985 in a Marlin hospital. He lived on Route 2, Mart, and died at the age of 60.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6, 1985 at Littlepage Funeral Home Chapel in Mart, with Rev. Joe Walts, Jr. officiating. Burial was in Mart Cemetery.

Brother Mills was born January 11, 1925 in Falls County. He worked for Mexia State School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and was commander of the American Legion Post in Mart. He was married to Verne!! Stone on December 30,. 1950.

Survivors include his wife, Vernell Mills; four sons, Milton Todd Mills of Mart, Rickey. Mills and Jerry Mills,

both of Marlin, and David Mills of Riesel; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Jo Ann) Etgen of Mart; and two grandchildren.

Of Interest Food Poisoning Common During Holiday Season Holiday meals are leisurely affairs, with family and friends sitting around eating, visiting and enjoying themselves. At the same time, the food is "sitting" around with them --left on the table or even put in the oven to "stay warm for supper."

That's one reason why food poisoning is common during the holiday season, says nutritionist Dr. Dymple Cooksey. Food left out at room temperature is an ideal breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

Many of the virus or flu - like symptoms people experience during the holiday season are actually from food - borne illness, says TAMU Agricultural Extension Service specialist.

Improper food handling or inadequate storage and refrigeration are common causes of food borne illness, she explains. "staph" or Staphylococcus poisoning is usually due to contamination of the food by food handlers who carry the bacteria on their hands or hair.

The specialist notes that most cases of "staph" food poisoning are related to foods such as custard - filled pastries, cream pies, salads, fish, meat products, sandwiches and creamed dishes. Precooked ham, poultry and poultry products -- especially dressing and chicken or turkey salads -- are excellent places for this bacteria to grow.

In general, foods that are moist, minced, chopped and handled a great

deal are susceptible to "staph" germs, she cautions.

Salmonella infections are most likely to come from foods such as poultry and eggs, prepared meats, meat pies, sausages, warmed - over foods and cream - filled meringue bakery goods not thoroughly cooked.

Cooksey says that unwashed hands or unsanitary cutting boards, food choppers, knives and cooking equipment can contaminate food with salmonella. She recommends thoroughly washing any cutting board used for raw meat before other foods are placed on it.

To keep food - borne illness from spoiling your holidays, remember to keep hot foods above 140 degrees Fahrenheit and cold foods below 40 degrees F so bacteria don't have a chance to grow, says the specialist.

A child's eating habits can be a source of constant worry for parents.

If you think your child overeats, undereats, is overweight or too thin,

it's a good idea to check with your family doctor. A physician can use growth charts and medical tests to determine your child's growth rate. If the child is found to be growing well with no weight problems, you can stop, worrying.

Dr. Dymple Cooksey, a nutrition specialist with the TAMU AES, says children often go on eating jags, eating mostly one or a few foods for several days.

Eating jags are usually temporary, Cooksey says, so continue offering good nutritious food in a pleasing way.

When a child doesn't eat much, this may be a normal "slowdown" stage of growth. Eating will increase as nutrient needs increase, she explains.

If obesity is a problem, check to see whether your child is eating too many high fat or sweet foods, or just, too much food. Are snacks nutritious or do they contribute excess calories?

Does your child get enough exercise? Is too much time spent at quiet activities that use few calories?

The nutritionist points out that many overweight children have one or more overweight parents, and children often follow their parents' eating habits. If this is the case in your family, she advises including more fruit, vegetables and low - fat foods such as skim milk, lean meats and broiled or baked foods in the family meals instead of sweets and other high - fat, high - calorie foods.

Some parents think all children need extra nutrients from vitamin pills or drops. But most children who eat a varied diet of meat, poultry and fish; breads and cereals; fruits and vegetables; and dairy products, get enough nutrients, Cooksey says.

Children who have eaten poorly balanced diets for a long time may require supplements but let your doctor decide whether vitamins or mineral supplements are needed, advises the specialist.

Chimneys Can Cause Fires Dirty

Chimneys with heavy creosote deposits are a leading cause of home fires in the United States each year.

Chimneys should be inspected annually for creosote build - up, and now is a good time to do so, says Dr. Gary Nelson, safety engineer with the Texas AES, the TAMU System.

Creosote is produced when wood burns. It escapes from a stove or fireplace in the form of smoke and condenses on the inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable, and deposits one - fourth of an inch deep or more should be removed, emphasizes Nelson.

Once ignited, creosote can burn at temperatures up to 3,000 degrees F. The strong upward draft caused by high - temperature chimney fires can lift burning creosote out of the chimney and onto the roof, possibly spreading the fire to the rest of the house, or even neighboring houses.

Chimney cleaning is a messy and sometimes dangerous task which may require climbing onto the roof.

Although chemical cleaners are available, most have been proven ineffective.

Nelson suggests steel brushes to clean a chimney, using extension rods to reach the entire length of the flue.

To avoid getting soot all over the house, fasten a sheet over the opening of the fireplace.

Chimney cleaning may best be handled by a chimney sweep. He will

have a selection of, brushes and will be able to spot improper installation of wood stoves or chimney damage, notes Nelson.

Once the chimney has been cleaned, proper use of the stove or fireplace can reduce creosote build - up, he adds.

The newer, more efficient stoves and fireplace inserts allow less heat loss through the chimney. This lower temperature inside the chimney encourages the accumulations of creosote, Nelson explains. With hotter fires, creosote is burned as it is produced, leaving less to condense in the chimney.

If the chimney and stove pipes are free from excessive creosote deposits, accumulation can be controlled by burning a hot fire for about 15 minutes each day to burn off any thin layers of creosote which may have formed the previous day.

Should a chimney fire occur, call the fire department immediately. If possible, shut off the air supply to the stove or fireplace but do not close the damper since this will force smoke into the house. If there is still a fire in the stove or fireplace, extinguish it with an approved fire extinguisher or throw . baking soda onto the fire, Nelson says.

December Debts Require January Credit Strategy If you have piled up credit card debts to pay for Christmas expenses, now is the time to plan a first - of - the year strategy for paying them off, says a family economics expert.

Without a concerted effort to reduce credit use, consumers can easily find themselves still paying for big - ticket gifts the following Christmas December, cautions Nancy Granovsky, a special with the TAMU AES. If you take on $800 in credit charges in December, and then charge more purchases on top of that original debt without ever paying it off, you'll owe $945.27 by the end of the following December, notes Granovsky.

Your original debt of $800 will have grown by $145.27 due to the 1.5 percent interest charged on the debt balance each month. That adds up to 18 percent interest per year, she adds.

The specialist points out that some credit card companies charge more than 18 percent interest per year and that you would also be paying interest on the other unpaid charges in addition to those levied against the $800 debt.

There are two ways to reduce your credit card debt load, says Granovsky.

You can charge less than you pay off each month, which will reduce your debt over time. Or you can simply stop using credit cards and make payments until the debt is eliminated.

Planning to use one of these strategies beginning in January can help you become debt - free, she says.

Start by calculating your fixed expenses, such as rent or mortgage, utilities, and car payments. Then figure your living expenses for food, clothing and personal items. Subtract these two sets of expenses from your monthly income and you will know how much money you have available for payments to reduce credit card debt, explains the specialist.

It's most critical not to charge more purchases than you are paying off each month, otherwise you will be unable to pay the debt off and it will actually rise

She recommends leaving credit cards locked up at home to curb impulse buying that can ruin your debt repayment plans.

Out Smoke Detector For New Year Check

A New Year's resolution to check your home smoke detector each month could help keep your family safe throughout the year, says housing specialist Dr. Peggy Owens.

Smoke detectors are an inexpensive and reliable way to protect our family and home from fire. But without proper maintenance, you cannot rely on a smoke detector to do its job, says the TAMU AES home economist.

To test the detector, hold a lit candle six inches under the unit, she says. Let the flame burn if you have an ionization detector. If you have a photo - electric unit, extinguish the candle and let visible smoke drift into the detector.

Most photo - electric models have a test button that simulates smoke in the detector which can be used in place of the candle test.

In either case, the unit's alarm should begin to sound within 20 seconds, says the specialist.

If the unit does not work, it is most likely due to dead batteries. Owens recommends replacing the detector's batteries at least once a year, even if the warning device for weak batteries has not sounded.

With a photo - electric detector, the specialist also recommends keeping replacement lamps on hand so there is no delay in restoring the smoke detector to full function.

PART III College Station -- A home burns every 45 seconds and up to 2,000 children burn to death annually.

Following are two more drills offered in this series designed to teach children how to survive a fire.

In the fifth part of this series, a final "rookie" examination will be offered to determine whether your children qualify as "firemen," A drill called "Get Out Fast" trains youngsters in the importance of a quick escape. A child's first impulse in fires should always be to "get out," even though the blaze may be small, for it can become an inferno in minutes. Fire most often strikes at night while children are asleep, so the most important drill you can give them is this: Have them lie on their beds and then sound the alarm. Time them to see how long it takes to reach the meeting place outside the house. At first, let them escape the simplest way.

Then make them go through obstacles, such as "smoke" and the "hot" door.

Block off stairways with a "string so they know to use an alternate route. Be sure they practice going out a window.

If they use a rope ladder, have them throw it out the window and actually climb down. If they are to wait on a roof until someone comes with a ladder, make them wait while you get the ladder. They must behave exactly as they would in a real fire.

The next drill is called "Call the Fire Engines." Teach your child exactly how to call the fire department; his quick action could save his life or your house. However, impress on him that if he discovers fire, he should act in this order: First, alert everyone so they begin their escape. Then call the fire department if he can still do so safely.

Lives have been lost because someone paused to call the firemen when he should have fled.

Have the children memorize the number of the fire department. Also, write out the number and place it permanently near the phone. Very small youngsters who can't dial long numbers at least can learn to dial "0" for the operator in an emergency.

When practicing, place a strip of tape over the receiver buttons so you can dial without letting the call go through. Have youngsters go to the phone, dial and give this information: "Our house is on fire at (address). The name is (head of household)." Then don't let them hang up immediately, but wait to be sure they were understood.

The following is the last of six "fire drills" offered in this series designed to teach children how to survive a fire.

The drill called "Man the Hoses" teaches some principles of fire fighting. Every fireman knows how to put out a fire, and your children can learn elementary firefighting techniques. Although a child will never fight fire extensively, his quick action could save his life or your house.

Have a small paper or wood fire in the backyard -- in a box, barbecue pit or trash burner -- where you can control it. Show youngsters how to put it out with a bucket of water or a hose.

A coarse spray nozzle is better than a steady stream. If you own a fire extinguisher, and you should, have everyone learn to use it. A practice session is worth the cost of a refill, for an extinguisher is useless unless you know how to work it.

Warn children never to throw water on an electrical fire because of the shock hazard or on a grease fire because it may spatter, spreading the flames. Only an extinguisher designed for electrical fires will work on electricity. To squelch small grease fires, put a lid on the flaming pan or throw on several handfuls of baking soda (never flour; it may explode). For ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper and cloth, water is the surest extinguishing agent.

Po studiich byl nejprve venkovskkm ueitelem, brzy se v gak pfeorientoval na hudbu a usadil se v Koline. It is also a good time to turn our minds to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. What we do today in the way of gtfts will mean much to deserving young people in the future.
