*** Christmas Eve is a special day and meaningful for people who feel that it's no trouble purchasing gifts and other things that makes the Holiday Season complete of happiness and peace.

As the old year is nearly coming to an end, and children (as well we adults) are being reminded for so long in advance, that the Christmas season is here. It has a special meaning for many families and it .also is a time of good wishes and goodwill by our lodges that have so generously contributed to the less fortunate individuals during the whole year. That, to the editor is the true meaning of fraternalism -- not only at Christmastime. With so many contributions made by our members to various charities, you have indeed made many happy persons who appreciate what was given to them.

By wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, let us hope, also, that the guns will remain silent because the Holy Season is supposed to be a time of peace throughout the Universe in the souls of all of us. Yet, the Holy Land of the Far East, is the birthplace of the three largest religions on the face of the Earth (Jewish, Moslem and Christian) seems to be the most violent, wartorn and unstable place on this planet.

*** We also wish to remember that the spirit of Christmas proclaims the brotherhood of man. It is more powerful.than the mightiest cannon, it has defeated armies; it has broken the strongest chains of servility. The spirit of Christmas has made men into great leaders; it has also turned brutal men of evil and avarice into weaklings to be scorned and forgotten.

During this Holiday Season, the -edítor wishes to express his personal Season's Greetings from our house to your house, and may there be good health and fortune in store for you.

Last, but not least, try not to have to drive, and if you have to drive, PLEASE BUCKiE UP YOUR SEAT BELT; do not let tragedy mar your favorite holiday.

The editor is very grateful to the consistant weekly correspondents, as well as those who submit newsy items about their monthly lodge affairs to the Vestnik on the monthly basis.

Although being a reporter may seem like a thankless position, the readers enjoy reading about lodge newsy happenings in the SPJST Vestnik. *** It appears as though another battle against repeal of tax exemption of fraternal benefit societies has been won. ln a November 20, press release, the Honorable Dan Rostenkowski (Democrat - Illinois), chairman, Committee on Ways and Means, announced initial action taken on November 15.

Among other things, the committee has restated the present law requirement that societies maintain an active lodge system and agree to require the Treasury Department to audit and study fraternal beneficiary societies with gross annual premiums exceeding $25 million.

Societies with gross annual premiums of less than $25 million are cautioned that this threshold may be changed at any time. They are reminded also of recent IRS audit experiences of several societies falling below the threshold. NFCA will, of course, continue to monitor the Tax Reform Proposal

*** During the course of a recent member - society IRS audit, the exammmg agent questioned the authority of the society making annuity certificates available to its members as an insurance benefit.

Following the agent's request for technical advice from the District Office, the matter was referred to the Washington, D.C. IRS office.

Specifically, the question is whether an annuity benefit is a form of qualifying benefit under Section 50l(c) (8) of the Code or is it a "unrelated business or trade activity" which should be subject to tax.

Following an information conference, the society, through its outside counsel, has submitted a position letter and requested a date for a substantive conference.

Member - societies will be kept informed as to the outcome of the conference and any subsequent decisions.

We are a family of people who must join together so as we may continue to work in our societies. He also mentioned that there are still problems in taxation. All fraternal societies are committed to protecting non - taxable status. He read a letter from the Legislative Law (NFC) Committee stating that societies "with annual gross premiums of greater than $25,000,000 would not be entitled to tax exemption." This letter refers to a proposal by the Ways and Means Committee in Congress. We are all urged to write our Congressman, particularly: Representative Pickle and Representative Archer to oppose taxing of any fraternalist at all.

Brother Sid also gave a report on the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) convention in Houston.

He particularly pointed out that SPJST youth have always given of their time to the TFC by participating in the convention programs. SP JST is so fortunate to have an active Youth Program. We can all be very proud of this. Items of interest also covered in the TFC convention concerned "Operation Care and Share," and emphasis on Family Life.

Brother Pokladnik concluded his report by reminding every lodge to participate and promote the two major projects of the SP JST right now, which are the "Statue of Liberty" and the "Child Abuse Program."

He encouraged all to hold fund - raising events of their choice and contribute generously to these causes.

There was no report to be given by the BylawCommittee.

Speaking on behalf of the Finance Committee,Chairman Brother Arnold Vrla stated that the bylawsrequire the Finance Committee to meet one time between conventions. The next meeting will be in January 1985. He also includeda few words in memory of Brother Joe Skrabanek.

President Hlavaty complimented Lodge66 on the wonderful lunch they provided.

Secretary Justine Andreason was asked to call roll. There were eleven lodgesrepresented and 85 members (16 and older) present.

Second Vice President Richard Burneyled the membership in a tribute and moment of silence for our departed members.

District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr announced that our program for the day by the Youth Department would be presented by our District III Queen and King. Sister .Petr introduced our District III Queen and new State Queen Lisa Reznik. Lisa · then gave her wíiining speech, which was enjoyed by all. She was also presented a check for $75 by District llI for winning the State contest.

FollowingLisa, King Paul Manak gave his District III winning speech, which was also very informative and appreciated by the audience. Paul was third runner - up at State and made us all very proud of him.

The youth were then dismissed for their meetingin the other room, after which Sister Petr would make her report.

The Supreme Lodge (Home Office) was represented by our Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska.

BrotherMikeska began his report by complimenting Brother Pokladnik as DistrictIII director and as a real doer.

He encouragedeveryone to be doers as

well. We were asked to be proud that the SPJST is a family - orientated fraternal Society, and reminded of the many contributions District III makes towards this.

Brother Mikeska spoke of keeping up with the changing times and how the SPJST is meeting the challengesof technology i.e. updating the computers, complying with regulations and watching the changes in people's habits. This also means persuing competitive insurance products that meet the needs of change.One of these products, he told us, is Universal Life.

We are also responding to laws that have 'made changes, such as requirements in reporting to the IRS (annuities, IRAs, etc.).

Another challenge is in planning for the future. Making sure that those lodges barely making ends meet can have their needs solved. He stated that we have always been able to solve our own problems. and will continue to in the future.

Brother Mikeska told us of a 1986 Sesquicentennialorganization set up as Texansof Czech Ancestry or [TOCA].

This group involves Czechs from all over the state who are interested in promoting the heritage in the Sesquicentennialyear. He is a member· of the Communication and Publicity Committee. There will be many projects going on in various communitiesacross Texas in whichwe will be invited to participate.

Before closing, he announced that 30 college- age young people received scholarships this past year, and DistrictIII had the most recipients. To apply you must have $5,000 insurance in force to qualify. More information is availablethrough the Home Office.

Brother Ben Jarma stated that the Insurance Committee had no report at this time.

Brother Silas Smith took this opportunity to bring up to . date on the District III sales. He reminded us that one must have $3,000 in annualized premium to qualify in the State Sales Representatives' contest.

Six people in District III have already qualified. Representatives have 3 months to qualify; the more you sell, the more you get noticed.

District III also has 8 people in the top 30 of the State.

There was no new business, so the Auditing Committee was asked for their report.

Brother Steinman reported for the committee, and their findings were: 4 sets of books 3 books as reported by treasurer I book (youth club) 65 cents missing Amotion was made and secondedto excuse the 65 cents. The motion carried.

The president then announced his appointments to the Nominating Committee. They are Ben Jarma, Norman Knesehkand Emil Petr. First Vice President Daniel Roznovsky appointed Jeanette Smith and Helen Vrla.

A motion was made to accept these nominations, it was seconded and passed.

Nexton the agenda was the selection of the site for our spring District III meeting. Lodge 92, Ft. Worth volunteered and this was accepted. A family social will be planned for that day in conjunction with the youth counselor.

District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr gave her final report beginning with another encouragement to adopt the slogan: Joining Hands to Touch Lives."'

Sister Petr then reported on YAD, which was held June 30 at Lodge 66, Waco. There were 196 entries in all; 108 first, second and third place winners.

At the Texas Fraternal Congress convention in Houston, District III participated with the program. Lisa Reznik(District and State Queen) was one of the MCs, and Stephanie Becan (District and State Talent winner) performed. Lisa was also featured representing SPJST on a float at the State Fair Czech Day. District III camp\ was a success, increasingby 20 campers. Sister Bessie urged those who do not have a youth club to go home and try to organize one; their kids are missingout on a lot of activity.

Lodge 32_ Elects Officers For 1986 The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 32 was l:tdd Wednesday, December 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Victoria County Electric Co - op Building. · The members first had a covered dish supper with smoked turkey and ham furnished by the lodge. After supper a short business meeting with the election of officers for 1986 was held. Special guests were Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary, and Sue Meadow who is the State Youth Director. President Leshikar and Mrs. Meadowswere each presented gifts by retiring Lodge No. 32 President Ella Arnold.

Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Kovar were presented a plaque in appreciation for their work with the auctions at the Czech Fests, by Mrs. Ella Arnold.

The next meeting will be January 8, 1986 at the Victoria County Electric Co - op Building at 7 p.m.

We had one of our members who traveled, again. This time it was Sister Rosie Tumis who had just returned from Nashville, Tennessee in time for our lodge meeting. She spent two weeks in the home of her son and family, Harvey 'Tumis. Sister Rosie reported a nice time although the weather was on the chilly side. We are happy to have Sister Rosie back in our midst.

Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our beautiful weather over the last weekend is coming to an end. The weather reports for this weekend sounds like winter is arriving.

The Metro - plex Lodges' Christmas Party held Sunday was a big success and enjoyed by all. A big thank you to Lodge 183. The food was delicious, the entertainment was great and everyone was so hospitable.

It was a pleasure to have in our midst Brothers and Sisters Sid and Justine Pokladník, Bernie and Evelyn Gebala and Silas and Jeanette Smith.

Brother Sid thought it would be a good idea to have our election of officers in Novem ber 1986 and then have the installation of officers at our next party which will be hosted by Lodge 92, Sunday, December 7, 1986.

Everyone was all for it. So for all of you who missed it this year, try and make it at the next party; be the good Lord willing.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Brother Lad Maly on the loss of his sister - in - law in Oklahoma. She was killed in a car wreck. May she rest in . peace.

During his administrations there was great progress in the growth of our SPJST: new lodges, combining lodges, and new lodge buildings. Let's not forget his writing of "A History of the SPJST," which others had attempted but gave up. I am proud of my copy and especially proud of your autograph; thank you for the beautiful words, Brother Nick!

Last year when I attended a meeting · of another great organization and was in the company of high officials, it was great to hear their praises of President Morris. They stated that he saved all of the fratemals when he went to the State Legislature to persuade them not to pass the bill which would have required our sales people to be licensed, etc. It is easy to see how Brother Nick accomplished that with his dynamic way of speaking! I think it was great that we had a president who could speak fluently Czech and German.

We Krejci's will never forget Brother Morris's beautiful eulogy at our mother's funeral service. So impressed was everyone, and one lady just had to get a copy of his speech. It is my wish that when I leave this world,

Czech Class AtAlief Alief Independent School District is again offering basic conversational course in the Czech language in the middle of January 1986 at Hastings High School. This 14 - week course will be taught again on Wednesdays, once a week, 7 to 9 p.m. The first class is to be on January 15th. The program of this course is designed to develop a basic skill in Czech language wherever it is spoken.

Czech Heritage Society Of Texas Meeting The Czech Heritage Society of Texas held its last meeting of 1985 December 7, 1985 at the Sacred Heart Church Hall in La Grange, Texas.

President Jeanne Hermann Jacques presided. Discussions were held on events for the Sesquicentennial.

Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) has many events planned for 1986.

Members were told that Czech organizations should be preparing their activities so that they can be put on the calendar for 1986. A seminar will be held in Houston February 23, 1986 at the SPJST Hall at 1435 Beall Street. A meeting will be held then with the exact time to be announced later.

The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas in Corpus Christi will hold its festival April 12, 1986. The second meeting of the year of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be held in Corpus Christi on that date.

The election of officers was held and Marjorie Matula who is vice president of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society was elected state president.

Mrs. Matula will also be editor of the Czech Heritage Society's newsletter.

Vice President elect is Victor Peter of Pasadena. The secretary is Arnold Pechal of Temple and treasurer is Janet Kasner, also of Temple.

Retiring President Jeanne Jacques was given a standing ovation in appreciation for her work. President Marjorie Matula then took over the meeting and made several announcements. Katherine Wokaty of Victoria, was elected Publicity Chairman. Olivia Milberger, out going vice president, told of activties in Inez, Texas. They will honor the 125 - year old St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the cemetery with historical markers.

Centennial Texas Czech Exhibit At State Fair (Editor's Note to Readers: Remember, this translated article reads as if it were in the present tense and time so it should be read remembering as if it were 1936 instead of 1985.)

The Centennial Texas Czech Exhibit at the State Fair of Texas was compiled under the direction of Dr. Josef Kopecký and Miss Marie Parma. It was translated from Czech by Kevin Hannan, from Naše Dějiny of Granger, 1939, pp. 666 - 674.

Texans celebrated the centennial anniversary of their state's independence with an expansive exhibit in Dallas in 1936. Preparations for this event lasted eighteen months and cost millions of dollars. It occurred to several Texans of Czech descent that this event would offer an opportunity to demonstrate our contributions to the growth of this

great state. A meeting was held in Schulenburg the second Sunday of February 1936 to discuss this idea.

Czechs from all parts of the state attended. The interest exhibited at this initial meeting demonstrated the enthusiasm of Texans throughout the state for the project. Most all professions and fields, churches, clubs and organizations of Czech Americans were represented. Dr. Josef Kopecký of San Antonio proposed the following program for the exhibit: The goal of the Czech exhibit should be to illustrate accurately, for all visitors and especially for visitors of other nationalities, that immigrants of Czech origin possess a culture which is at least on the same level as that of other immigrant groups; that immigrants of Czech origin have contributed their share towards the development of the state; that Texans of Czech origin have been exemplary citizens, in war as well as in peace; that Texans of Czech descent can be found in all fields and professions and are well - represented throughout all branches of society in modern Texas. This exhibit should show from whence our pioneer ancestors emigrated; who they were and why and when they came; what type of spiritual and material heritage they brought with them; where they settled; what type of obstacles they met; finally, how through their dedication, diligence and hard work they have contributed to the development and welfare of Texas. In order that this goal be achieved to satisfaction, the exhibit should illustrate the beginnings and development of our people in these areas: the home, agriculture, industry, business, citizenship, politics, journalism, social life and clubs and organizations. The exhibit should use original materials brought from Europe by immigrants.

Maps, pictures, drawings, replicas, reproductions of original documents and properly compiled data may also be used. Expenses should be paid from a common fund solicited from sacrificing individuals and organizations.

The proposal was accepted in the form it was introduced. Officers were elected and committees set up to fulfill the difficult tasks. In Schulenburg work began on the project immediately. Before long nearly every Czech settlement in Texas was making its contribution.

Individuals and organizations, without regard for religious or political distinctions, joined together to work towards a single goal; to be properly represented at the centennial celebration. Thanks to this spirit of cooperation, our exhibit in the Varied Industries building was complete and ready for viewing when the exhibition opened to the public June 6, 1936. Custodian of the exhibit was Miss Marie Parma, treasurer of KJZT. The exhibit was intentionally located in a spot by which thousands of people passed daily. There were two entrances to the exhibit, which was located in a corner of the Varied Industries building. This was located near the east entrance to the fairgrounds through which a steady influx of visitors passed each day.

The interior and exterior walls of the exhibit room were tastefully painted by the Czech artist Lešovský and attracted the attention of passers - by.

Similarly the items on exhibit were arranged so that they caught the eye of the crowd and drew visitors inside. If a visitor were to enter through the smaller side entrance, he faced the main wall and a mural by Lešovský ,

which had a significance quite appropriate for the occasion. This work was painted specially for the exhibit and was dedicated by the present generation of Czech Texans to their pioneer ancestors. The painting recalls how our first settlers earned their living as farmers. For those disposed to contemplation, this work has a much deeper significance in that it represents the relationship of the immigrant Czech family to its new country and new home in Texas. A boy holding a cotton plant in his hand speaks to his mother. The father, dressed as a Texas farmer, plows the loose soil. In the distance to the left the family's new home is shown. In the background to the right the Statue of Liberty is visible. The inscription above the painting reads: "You America, offer me liberty. I give you my devotion, sincerity, honesty and love of thé truth." This, you see, represents our beginnings in Texas.

Emblems of Czech organizations in Texas, beautifully crafted from wood, together with information about these organizations hang above the painting.

These represent the spiritual and material strength of the modern organizations of Czech Texas.

If the visitor enters the exhibit

through the main entry, he meets a sight which is no less interesting, instructive and well - arranged. The entire opposite wall is covered by an encased, illuminated map of Czech Texas. Six flags, which signify the flags which have flown over the state in the past three centuries, hang above the map. Made from plastic materials, the map measures nine feet by eight feet and faithfully represents the elevations and topographical features of the State of Texas. This interesting and instructive work was conceived by Dr. Henry Maresh, who also supervised its construction. The map waspaid for and donated to the exhibit

by František Dvořák, František Olexa, Sr. and František Olexa, Jr., all of Houston. This work required several months of exhaustive research and work and could have easily been an entire exhibit by itself. It contained all important geographical and cultural data, as wellas historical information.

Nót only the first Czech settlements, schools and churches were shown, but each of the present - day 154 Czech settlements in Texas, denoted by a number, appeared on the map. A legend for the numbered settlements appeared to the left of the map. The map also illustrated other peculiarities of our people. By viewingthe map, for example, it was possibleto see that the Czech settlements were located in those topographical belts which are best suited to farming.

On the wall to the left of the main entry were reproductions of official records relating to our immigrants in Austin and Fayette counties and particularly to those who arrived from from 1852 through 1856. These documents prove that in this early period Czechs in Texas were purchasing land, constructing homes and becoming American citizens.

Further on were found illuminated display cases which contained artifacts of the early pioneers. The first case contained household items such as quilts, table cloths, fine needlework and kitchen implements. Certain of these valuable items were over 150 years old. There were also diaries, records and books. The next showcase contained hammers, axes, tools for the manufacture of shingles and staples and other tools with which early Czech pioneers in Austin and Fayette 'counties constructed their first

dwellings. Detailed replicas of two of these early structures were exhibited: the lean - to of tree limbs and grass in which the Haidušek family spent their first Texas winter in 1856 and the first Czech "loksák" (log cabin) built in 1856 near New Ulm by the J .L. Lešíkar family. Clothing from this period was displayed on mannequins.

This display not only illustrated the development of our people in Texas, but also showed their moral strength and determination. These pioneers sacrificed the relative comfort and prosperity of Europe for an unknown life in-frontier Texasso that they might gain the freedom that was denied them in their homeland.

-Agriculture was and still is the main industry for Czechs in Texas. Our people are recognized as the best farmers in the state. From the beginning it was desired that this exhibit. illustrate this aspect of our community's development. Some difficulty was encountered here.

Although there was no shortage of agricultural tools and implements from the pioneer days, the difficulty of transporting and organizing these for display.presented a problem. The costs involved in the exhibition of a single plow would have been approximately $100! A piece of good luck was encountered here in the form of F.J. Bohuslav, a retired pharmacist from El Campo. Mr. Bohuslav's hobby was the carving of tools, dishes and implements from wood. His collection illustrated the gradual evolution of farm tools. He had more than 100 items, from a simplehoe to a gasoline powered tractor, which more than adequately showedthe development of agriculture among our people. Each item was accompained by a note explaining the item's relevance in the life of a Czech farmer in Texas. This display was not .only historically relevant, but it also showedthe artistic talent. of an individual Czech Texan.

The display was admired by many American visitors. Certain of these would have gladlypurchased the entire collection, A collection of teaching materials from the 1870s and 1880s illustrated the state of education and schooling in that perřod when neither parents nor children understood English. This collection had survived chiefly in grammars which were hand - written and prepared by Josef Holec, who taught in Ross Prairie and Rožnov in Fayette County and in Burleson County. These contained lessons in

handwriting, arithmatic, geography, history and English. Through this display we wished to demonstrate that our pioneer teacherswereable to adapt themselves to their new surroundings and that they were talented, industrious, practical and sacrificing.

They constantly impressed upon their students that the task of the school was to produce moral and hard - working citizens.

A book about Czech Texans in the professions was assembled in 1936.

This album contained the names and addresses of some 27 lawyers, 36 pharmacists, 30 dentists, 301 teachers and 135 nurses. Brief biographies of the doctors, dentists, lawyers and pharmacists were included. Here we wishedto demonstrate that we are well - represented in the professions, just as in industry and agriculture. Perhaps someone might comment that we in Texas are under - represented in professional fields. It is necessary to . note, however, that the unsettled economic climate in the south followingthe CivilWar forced parents to keep their children home to work in the fields rather than send them to school. Children attended school only when the weather wastoo bad for field work. At any rate, schoolswere not of the best quality and classes were held only during four or five months of the year. Only at the end of the 19th and beginningof this century were our youths able to pursue a higher education. If we then consider the obstacles that until only recently stood in the way of our children's education, we need not be ashamed of the statistics cited above.

A section of the exhibit was devoted to Czech newspapers in Texas which have servedthe community for over 50 years. These include Svoboda, Nový Domov, Věstník, Texan, Našinec, Čechoslovák, Texaský Rolník and Bratrské Lísty. We were fortunate to be able to acquire collections of the first years of Svoboda (1885)and Nový Domov (1895). It was correctly noted that the Czech - language press in Texas has traditionally been the chief authority in the religious and political education of new immigrants. Works of Czech writers from Texas were also displayed here.

The artistic talents and inclinations of Czech Texans were represented through paintings, musical compositions, wood carvings, musical instruments made from wood, embroidery and needlework, etc. A Czech costume was also displayed.

There was obviously no lack of material for this section of the exhibit, which attracted great attention.

We had to depict part of the story of our development through photographs and tables of statistics, such as the information in the album of biographies. In a similar manner we attempted to show our representation in business and industry. Various · organizations also distributed detailed information about their history and membership. Churches provided information about their parishes and congregations throughout the state.

The section of the exhibit devoted to Catholic Czechs in Texas offered information about this group's spiritual heritage from Europe and Texas. A picture of our Slavic· apostles, Sts. Cyril and Methodius hung on the wall. On another .sectíon of the wall hung a picture of St. Václav, painted by a boy from Corn Hill, Texas, F.E. Hecel. Several display cases to the right of the main entrance contained bibles, kancionáls, and religious works, some of which were over 300 years old. Certain of these were in the Latin alphabet, others in švabach. A copy of baptismal records from Freiberg showed that a Czech infant, Matthias Jaresh, was baptised there in 1856.A replica of the first Catholic chapel in Hostyn, built from logs in 1856,was exhibited, along with items which belonged to the Czech pioneer priest - teacher Josef Chromčík. These included a cross and rosary which he brought with him when he arrived in Fayetteville on Christmas in 1872. The display cases contained many other items relating to Catholic.Czechsof Texas. On the wall above the cases hung pictures of Father Chromčík and the pioneer teacher statesman Augustin Haidušek, i .._ first Czechcounty judge in the United States. Detailed information about the history, organizations, parishes, schools and clubs of Catholic Czechsin Texas were compiled for the exhibit in a special book. Numerous photographs and notes offered additídhal information.

The display devoted to Protestant Czechs in Texas was located to the right of the smaller entry. This contained items brought to Texas by pioneers of the Protestant faith as well as memorial books, documents and other memorabilia of these pioneers and their descendants. The congregation of the church in Wesley (orginally Veselí)prepared a replica of their first church which dates to 1866 and still stands today. Above the display cases hung historicallyrelevant pictures and portraits of the pioneer preacher Josef Opočenský and pioneer teacher Josef Mašík.

If we look back today on the work and sacrifices which made this exhibit possible, we can certainly say: "It was well worth it!" Hundreds of thousands of Americans were impressed by our exhibit. Yet this enterprise also had enormous significance for our own community. Our exhibit portrayed our history, traditions, maturity, culture, unit, endurance and commitment. This was not all, however, for it showed us that our work has in fact only just begun. It showed us the path which we. . shall trod together towards the future.

Lodge 39, Bryan YC Went Caroling Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge 39 had their Christmas Party December 1, 1985 along with the mother lodge. We had music provided by a lady with a keyboard. She played a lot of Christmas songs and everyone sang along with the music. She also played some Czech music and everyone had fun dancing. We went caroling to the nursing home and the people there were so happy to see us. We also gave all of them some candy. It seemed good that we could add some cheer to others.

Dear Readers: The youth club meeting was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 1985 with a fair attendance. The meeting was opened by program consisted of "The Night Lori Holub.

Our youth club donated to the for the adult Christmas Party. The Statue of Liberty, donated cakes to the decorating was set for December 17th, West Rest Haven, and other charities. but we planned a workshop for

December 12th to make our decorations.

The 14 memberspresent wished Kim Kacal and Darrin Dybala a ''Happy Birthday.''

For the party each youth brought canned goods or a toy to be distributed to the needy families of our community.

A report on our Christmas ornament sales was given. Our top three sales persons were: 1st -- Kim Kacal (sold 57 items) 2nd -- Jody Henderson (29 items) 3rd -- Pam Brandt (23 items) .

Everyone received prizes fot their efforts.

The meeting was adjourned. · Following the meeting members were surprised by a visit from Santa.

Those who sat on his lap got sacks of Christmas goodies.

Later, we enjoyed a catered turkey and dressing dinner furnished by the youth club. Mothers brought desserts and salads to go with the meal.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Oznémka vyučování češtiny v Alief Aliefská Večerní Škola zahájí v polovině ledna 1986 další kurs základní hovorové češtiny. Toto vyučování bude opět ve středu, jednou týdně, od 7 do 9 hodin večer. První lekcí bude středa 15.ledna. Tento kurs bude zase zaměřen na jednoduchou konversaci se základy mluvnice k rozšíření hovorových možností všude, kde je používána česká mluva. Tak Všelicos Anežka Houdková Velice nás zarmoutila zpráva když jsme se dověděli, že odešla na věčnost naše dlouholetá přítelkyně paní Marie Petříková dne 1. prosince. Byla to dobrá osoba, vždy přátelská a upřímná ke každému. Byla rozená na Moravě a přijela do našeho Texasu v mladém věku. Pak se vdala a měla 3 děti a když manžel zemřel, tak měla mnoho starostí uživit děti. Později děti se oženili a dcera se vdala a pak už to bylo lepší. Měla velký zájem o sešívání a prošívání dek a těch opravdu vyrobila mnoho, že mohla podělit své děti, vnoučata a pravnoučata. Zanechala po sobě pěknou památku. Zanechala dva syny Franka Petříka, v Dallasu, Louis Petrika Duncanville dceru pi. Anna Shelleyovou ve Farmer' s Branch, devět vnoučat a 11 pravnoučat. Pohřbená z kostela sv. Cecilie a uložená na Calvary Hill hřbitov. Vyslovujeme pozůstalým upřímnou soustrast a zesnulé přejeme klidný věčný spánek. Budeme jí postrádat na dlouhý čas! Byla členkou spolku SP JST mnoho let.

Právě když jsem začala psát hořejší zprávu tak jsem se dověděla, že zase odešla jedna moje dlouholetá přítelkyně kterou jsem měla velmi ráda. Je to pí. Kristina Zemánková, která měla dne IS.prosince míti už 94 let. Narodila se v Jedlí na Moravě a když se pak zde vdala, tak bývala s manželem a dětmi v Blessing, Tx. Tam její manžel býval velmi činný ve spolku SP JST a byl nějaký čas předsedou, kde mnoho učinil pro osadu. Paní Zemánková byla velice dobrá paní a vždy byla veselá a lidé jí měli radi pro její pěkné úsměvy a její milou povahu.

Zanechala zde děti-dcery Liddie Pavelkovou, Martu Johnsonovou, Sidney Bridewellovou, a syny Victora a Josefa. Sestru pí. Františku Vítovou, bratry Victora a Ernesta Huffovy, velice mnoho vnoučat a pravnoučat.

Vnukové posloužili své babičce jako

Kolín ve staré vlasti a Naše městská rada měla volby skrze Asi pojede tam, kde je hodně lidí Kolín v Louisianě. to kou~e~ v restauracích, obchodech a katolické víry. Je to ještě dlouho než se na veřejných místech a tak nyní návštěva uskuteční ale snad vše dobře (Sepsal John J. Karas z Houstonu) res~~ace které mají 50 a více sedadel dopadne.

Sváteční atmosféru nenavodíme jen samotnými pokrmy, ale i ůpravou míst­ nosti a stolu. V tomto období máme k to­ mu mnoho prostředků. Na vánočním tr­ hu je dostatek jmelí i vánočních ozdob.

Nezapomeneme však ani na košíček ne­ bo misu s ovocem, cukrovím, koláči. ani na karafu s vínem. Vše v místnosti vhod· ně rozestavíme. Stejně upravíme i jídelní stůl, který tak splyne v harmonický celek s vyzdobenou místností. Nezapomeneme ani na svícen.

To hlavní je ovšem sestava svátečního jídelníčku a k tomu je třeba říci několik slov: - Podáme aperitiv? Může totiž na­ vodit dobrou pohodu a přispět k úspěchu společného oběda či večeře. Funkce aperitivu je čistě praktická a společen­ ská. Praktická v tom smyslu, že jím vy­ plníme čas čekáním na ostatní účastní­ ky nebo na dohotovení pokrmů. S po­ dáváním aperitivu nečekáme, až se sejdou všichni, právě naopak. Jeho společenská funkce tkví v tom, že jím

hosta přivítáme a se sklenkou v ruce si s nim vzájemně popřejeme pěkné svát­ ky a dobré zdraví. Volba aperitivu není příliš důležitá. Gastronomická pravidla neporušíme žádnou alternativou. Aperi­ tivem je každý nápoj. který podáváme před jídlem. Rozhodující je tu záliba nebo to, co právě máme k dispozici.

Může to být sklenka ovocné šťávy, po­ hár suchého vina. dokonce je moderní podat skleničku piva, třeba ve ,.flétně", tj. skleničce na šampaňské. Samozřej­ mě jsou vhodné vermut, viska, slivovice aj. V dávkách se však rozhodně mírní­ me!

Podobnou funkci jako aperitiv má ve stavbě menu i předkrm. Předkrm není nutnou součásti menu. Nemá být přiliš bohatý, bylo by to na úkor jídel hlavních, více výživných a vyvážených. Jeho vý­ znam je jen reprezentační, ale stává se dnes už zvykem.

Polévka v menu naproti tomu nesmí chybět. Je to lehký chod, ideál chuti a jemnosti. Skutečnost, že je podávána na počátku menu, klade na její přípravu vysoké nároky. Je jedním z těch chodů, u nichž se vyžaduje naprostá dokonalost.

Podáváme ji však jenom tolik, aby nevza­ la dalším chodům vítr z plachet. Napros­ to nezbytné také je, aby se podávala horká.

Ve vánočním menu má své zajištěné místo ryba, a to plným právem. Její bio­ logická hodnota je nesrovnatelná. Je většinou lehce stravitelná, a již proto je její ůčast v menu žádoucí. U žádného ji­ ného pokrmu není taková možnost roz­ manitosti, lehkosti a jemnosti, jež dovolí snadno pokračovat ve vychutnávání dal­ ších chodů. Rybu podáváme po polévce a před hlavním chodem podle toho, jak rozsáhlé menu sestavujeme.

Po rybě, podáváme-li ještě masitý chod, uděláme přestávku. Při bohatším menu podáváme jednotlivé chody s vět­ ším časovým odstupem, avšak příliš dlouhé mezery sváteční atmosféru poně­ kud narušuji. V těchto případech je vhodné zařadit jako mezichod lehkou osvěžující zmrzlinu, tzv. sorbet, který osvěží a zároveň pomůže překlenout do­ bu čekáni na další chod.

K hlavrumu chodu podáváme většinou červené vino, ale můžeme zůstat i u vína bileho, které jsme pili k rybě.

Jako další přichází na řadu dort, vá­ noční cukroví. ovoce nebo ovocný salát.

Můžeme k němu podat polosuchý sekt nebo i jinou láhev sladkého vína. Na pří­ pravě ovocného salátu si dáme rovněž záležet. Vybereme vyzrálé ovoce a dobré kompoty, promícháme je s rozsekanými ořechovými jádry a ještě ozdobíme půl­ kami jader. Ovoce, hlavně však mírně vychlazený salát nás po bohatém jídle příjemně osvěží. Pohostíme jím dobře i naše hosty, o něž o vánočních svátcích nebývá nouze. Vánoční menu zakončíme šálkem dobré kávy a skleničkou vhodné­ ho destilátu.

Na osvěžení paměti uvádíme několik méně běžných vánočních předpisů:

Mlíčí z kapra po mlynářsku Jednoduchý zákusek k aperitivu Mlíčí posolíme, pomoučníme a na pán­ vi, másle a mírném ohni opečeme. Poka­ peme citrónem a položíme na plátek bílé veky opečené na rnásle.

Kapr na modro V kastrolu svaříme v osolené vodě koření, bobkový list, celý pepř, celer, mr­ kev, petržel, cibuli a ocet. Přidáme kous­ ky očištěného kapra a na mírném ohni asi 10-15 minut (podle velikosti kapra) vaříme. Hotového kapra vyjmeme z lázně, vyrovnáme na míse a podáváme s rozpuštěným máslem.

Kapr na černo Očištěného a vykuchaného kapra oso­ líme a nakrájíme na porce. Očištěnou ko­ řenovou zeleninu nakrájíme na kolečka a v kastrolu na rozpuštěném tuku zvolna dusíme. Ještě než zelenina změkne, zali­ jeme ji trochou octa, přidáme krev z kap­ ra a takové množství vody, aby v ní byl kapr ponořený. Přidáme několik zrnek nového koření, pepře, špetku tymiámu a jeden bobkový list. Připravené porce kapra vložíme ke koření a na mírném ohni asi 15 minut (podle velikosti kapra) vaříme. Jakmile je kapr měkký, vyjmeme jej a uložíme v teple. Do kastrolu přidá­ me trochu švestkových povidel a asi 100g perníku, který jsme předem narno-

Máme-li chemicky neošetřený citrón, dáme i citrónovou kůru, ze dvou citrónů šťávu, několik kostek cukru, 1/41 červenéhovina, event.ještě přidáme tro­ chu strouhaného perníku. Na mírném ohni za občasnéhomíchánívaříme nece­ lou půlhodinu. Omáčka má být hladká a hustá. Hotovou omáčku procedíme, přidáme do ní oprané hrozinky, spařené a na nudličky nakrájené mandle a podle chuti můžemepřidat i několik jader vlaš­ ských ořechů. Omáčku ještě krátce za­ hřejeme a přelijeme jí uvařenéhokapra.

Podávámes jemným knedlíkem.

Pro 6 osob

Ze šesti lžiček kávy a vařící vody při­ pravíme silnou kávu, kterou nalijeme do připravenýchnahřátých šálků. Do každé­ ho ještě přidáme dvě kostky cukru a skleničku rumu. Jednotlivé porce dob­ ře zamícháme a na povrch nastříkáme čepičku ze šlehanésmetany,kterou ještě ozdobíme mletou kávou. Aby podávaná káva zůstala vřelá, musíme mít všechny potřebné přísady při ruce a smetanu už předem našlehanou.

Hruškovy sorbet Při slavnostním menu mezichod, jinak vždy vhodný a snadný dezert

Množství pro 6 osob. - 1 litrová skle­ nice zavařených hrušek, 1 citrón, 5 cl hruškovice. nebo jiného likéru. - Láhev kompotu otevřeme a její obsah i se siru­ pem vylijeme do mísy. Přidáme šťávu z jednoho citrónu a vše dOkladněrozměl­ níme. {Máme-li mixér, postačí dvě minu­ ty.) Směs nalijeme do nerezavějícínádo­ by a postavíme do mrazicího prostoru chladničky. Máme-li mrazničku,můžeme do směsi přidat i lihovinu. Na přípravu sorbetu však stačí i chladnička. Lihovinu pak přidávámeažtěsně před podáváním, přímo do poháru. Nežzasednemeke sto­ lu, sorbet z chladničkyvyjmeme a nechá­ me ještě 5 minut v pokojové teplotě.

(Stejně dobře nám poslouží i hotově za­ koupený polárkový dort, má však mno­ hem více joulů - kalorií.)

Poblíž Banské Bystrice se pošestnácté konal jediný zimní festival folklóru v CSSR - krňačkové závody, což je jízda na dřevěných saních vyrobených bez jediného hřebíku, které se dříve používaly ke svážení dřeva a sena. Dvoučlenné osádky musely překonat trať dlouhou 2050 metrů s celkovým převýšením 430 metrů a některé dosahovaly ob­ divuhodné rychlosti: 60-70 km za hodinu. Tyto závody, jako součást masopustních oslav na venkově, jsou vlastně evropskou raritou, protože podobné, ale ve skocích na těchto saních, se konají pouze v Rakousku. (iv)

Pražské nakladatelství Melantrich začalo vydávat novou edici "Slovo k historii", určenou především mladé generaci. Nová edice byla založena u přfležitosti 40. výročí osvobození CSSR Sovětskou armádou. Posláním nové řady, ve které budou každý rok vycházet čtyři aktuálně zaměřené seši­ ty, je populární formou seznamovat čtenáře s významnými událostmi čs. dějin. Jako první vyšel svazek "Jak to bylo v květnu 1945", jehož autorem je doc. dr. VáclavMelichar, CSc, vedoucí vědecký pracovník československo-sovětského institutu Československé akademie věd v Praze.

Instead of dieting during the holidays, additional exercise may do more for your weight control program, says nutritionist Dr. Alice Hunt.

The year - end holidays are probably the worst time of the year to be on a weight - reduction plan, she says. With all the high - caloried food around and social pressure to eat, it's easy to break a dieť.

People who have been on crash diets or fad diets to lose pounds before the holidays are especially likely to go off the diet, overindulge and wind up gaining those pounds -· and more -­ back by the end of the year, Hunt maintains.

Unfortunately, breaking a diet may also make the person feel guilty and reduce their enjoyment of the holidays, says the AES specialist of TAMU. Hunt recommends that dieters stick as closely to a balanced diet as they can, including moderate amounts of protein foods, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and cereals and grains each day.

Moderation should also be the key to indulging in the desserts, candies. chips and snacks that will be on hand at holi_day dinners and parties.

Rather than totally denying yourself holiday foods, increase your exercise to help burn the extra calories, says Hunt.

Parking the car further from the office and taking the steps instead of the elevator will help counteract the effect of eating at the office party.

Walking briskly for 30 - 40 minutes each day, riding bicycles or shooting baskets with the kids, taking a hike while the turkey is in the oven or doing exercises during the half - time of the televised bowl games are just a few of the ways you can work more exercise into your holidays, she adds.

Increased exercise will help you maintain your weight rather than gain during the holidays. And by making added exercise a habit you carry on into the new year, you may be able to lose pounds once you get back on a weight - loss diet, says the nutritionist.

Consumers shopping for major household appliances -- refrigerators, clothes washers, dryers and the like -­ may find it worthwhile to look for the product's energy - use label, says the Federal Trade Commission.

The labels, required by federal law, provide an estimate of the product's annual operating cost or its energy efficiency.

The same information also appears in retail - sales catalogs.

*** With temperatures dropping, motorists will want to keep an eye on their cars' tire pressure, warns the American Automobile Association.

Tire pressure decreases about 1 pound per square inch for each temperature drop of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. A tire that had been correctly inflated at 7í., degrees could be as much as 5 pounds underinflated at 20 degrees. Tires should be checked often and only when "cold" -- before the car is driven much after it has stood for a time .. As tires heat up, they expand, making pressure readings inaccurate.
