Sister Bobalik Celebrates 96th Birthday Mrs. Frances Bobalik Sister Frances Bobalik was born in Purlip, Czechoslovakia on November 1, 1890, to the late Frank and Anna Rusik . She has one sister and two half brothers, all of whom are still living.

Sister Bobalik came to the United States in 1900 with her family. They landed in Galveston, Texas and then moved to Enn i s, Texas after a short stay in Galves o -.. She married Frank of 17 and to this Bobali' .. union were own four children; two sons preceded her in death. Her living children are a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Valek of Ennis, and son, Marion Bobalik of Kaufman. She has several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The late Frank Bobalik, and Sister Frances Bobalik farmed all of their married life in Ennis, Dallas and Kaufman, Texas. After the death of her husband, she moved to Ennis to live with her daughter. She enjoys

Another Czech Promotion Presentation

Students and their parents are encouraged to read the writeup about the new information and new deadline for Student Scholarship applications under the heading "From the SL President." The new deadline is April 30, 1986. *** Please note the corrected Bulletin Board from SYD Sue Meadows in the Youth Section pertaining to the District YADs and Camp dates. *** Over 20 years ago, while Dr. John Skrivanek was still living, Brothers J.M. Skrabanek, Stephen Valcik, Dr. Henry Maresh, Ludvig Kucera, and your editor attended a meeting in College Station to organize the Czech Education Foundation of Texas (CEFT). All present donated at least $100 to the cause and there were a number of $1,000 donations. They were all made in a desire to further the interest of students to study the Czech language by providing them low interest loans toward that effort. All of the original donors were named as directors of CEFT; since that time many of them have passed away including Dr. John Skrivanek.

In mid - 1985 four of the few remaining directors, namely, Professor Joseph J. Skrivanek (twin brother of the late Dr. John Skrivanek), Sid Pokladnik, Tim Kostom, and your editor met at Lodge 88 in Houston i.. an effort to revive interest in CEFT and discussed the possibility of establishing a "Czech Chair" at either Texas A&M University or University of Texas (Austin) which would insure that Czech would be an established course at that university. Professor Brother Jos. J. Skrivanek was elected president due to Brother J.M. Skrabanek's failing health and was given the authority to pursue this at the two universities. At that meeting the CEFT bank balance was over $35,500.

Before World War II Czech graduate students of University of Texas (Austin) organized the "Texaska Matice Vygยงiho Vzdelani" (The Texas Council of Higher Education). They were Attorneys.

August and George Kacir, C.H. Chernosky, Roman Bartos and Doctors Henry and Rudolph Maresh to name a few. This was also to allow Czech students to obtain 5 percent loans to go to college. These founders were all busy with their occupations and World War II came along so all came to a standstill with that, more or less. Now it has been revived as "The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT).

Professor Jos. J. Skrivanek has information that UT (Austin) and A&M both are interested in establishing a "Czech Chair" at their respective universities. The cost of the chair in UT (Austin) would be about $600,000 and at TAMU about $650,000.

This thought has occurred to your editor: (This portion is edited from CESAT information.)

The Sesquicentennial anniversary of our State's birth is not far away and many Czech - Texan groups are laying

plans for its celebration. An association known as Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) has been formed with the hope of giving unity to all the events and projects that will be undertaken by us, the Czech - Texan Community. With this group acting as a central, Statewide informational clearing house, we will be able to coordinate our individual projects and all efforts with very little conflict.

The organization of TOCA has brought all Statewide and Regional organizations together for the first time in a long time. In:recent months and at Czech Day during Texas State Fair, I have talked to a few individuals and organizational leaders who have expressed the opinion that the Sesquicentennial year would be an ideal time to bring to fruition a long held dream to establish a university chair to honor our pioneering forefathers by preserving the Czech culture and language for future generations.

What would a Chair do for us? It would guarantee the teaching of the Czech language irregardless of the number of students enrolled. Research programs involving work with the State's native Czech - American populations could be undertaken.

Inter - disciplinary approaches to oral history and folklore demands a thorough knowledge of the Czech language. The placement of Czech studies in a prominent position would allow a systematic study of the Czech dialects preserved in Texas and would be of considerable value to linguists and other scholars. University research would produce historical studies of such topics as the role Czech immigration had on the cotton industry and the replacement of slave labor eliminated by the Civil War. Student, and perhaps professor, exchange programs would be developed with other universities such as Charles University in Prague. The list is endless.

The renewed emphasis on the humanities, particularly language, is encouraging. More and more students in Texas are taking basic language courses, particularly Russian. Texas A&M University has had a doubling of enrollment in Russian but does not presently offer any Czech language courses. The federal government is, once again, realizing the critical need for experts in certain languages. It has announced its support for the teaching and development of a number of "critical languages." Prominent among them is Czech. Study of a foreign language is more important today than it has ever been. Its most immediate and practical benefit is in improving understanding and lessening tensions among nations. To us Czech - Texans it provides an insight into our own personalities which were influenced by our common heritage. ***

Victims of this year's floods in areas officially declared federal disaster area have a choice of how to handle an uninsured loss on your taxes. You can take only the portion of the loss that exceeds 10 percent of your adjusted gross income. You can put the loss on this year's tax return or last year's. To get a bigger deduction, choose the year in which your income was lower. If insurance reimbursements exceed replacement costs, you must report the difference as taxable income. ***

National Fraternal Congress Of America I am pleased to announce the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee has voted to exclude from the tax reform package, the proposal to tax fraternal benefit societies with annual premium income above $25 million.

Also under the committee proposal, there will not be a tax on inside build up, but commercial insurance company taxes will be increased and other exempt insurance entities, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, will be taxed.

This was a victory for the whole Fraternal Benefit System and our thanks go out to the many societies and individuals involved with the D.C. legislative process.

I also extend thanks on behalf of the Board of Directors and all member societies of the NFCA to our very hardworking Law Committee on Federal Taxation (Dave Larson, Lutheran Brotherhood, chairman; Pat Donlin, Knights of Columbus; Bill Heerman, Aid Association for

Lutherans; Al Mazewski, Polish National Alliance of the US of NA; and DW Young, Modern Woodmen of America).

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, November 10, 1985 at the Grant Building beeinning at 2 p.m. with President Linda Mikush presiding. Pledge to the U.S. flag was recited.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the last meeting.

Correspondence followed. Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka also gave their reports.

Linda Mikush and Erwin Holy reported on the District VI meeting they attended in Victoria.

Youth Leader Evelyn Holy announced there will be special entertainment and door prizes in honor of Christmas at the next meeting.

The lodge voted to contribute $75 to the Statue of Liberty.

Election of officers was held with all present officers being re - elected.

The meeting adjourned with refreshments served later; everyone enjoyed lunch.

Winner of the door prize was Herm ina Vasek.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, December 8th, at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. There will be special Christmas entertainment and door prizes. Lunch will be served as usual.

Box Lodge 13 Elects Officers

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 13 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, November 18 at 1 p.m. President Claud Flippin called the meeting to order and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

We then had roll call of officers.

There were eleven officers present and two absent; there were 35 members present.

Sister Dorothy Rackel read the minutes from our October meeting.

They were approved as read.

The mortuary report was given by Sister Magdeline Iselt. It was approved as read.

Sister Doris Balcar gave the treasurer's report. Sister Balcar reported paying insurance, county taxes, and fence repair that led to a loss in income for the month of October; her report was approved as read.

Lodge 13 wishes to welcome three new members into our lodge. They are Nancy Hannes, and Scott and Michael Whitsel. read then Flippen Brother correspondence from the Supreme Lodge. The first letter was commending our lodge for donating to the Blue Santa program; another letter was concerning IRS Form 1099 which states that any employee making $600, or more, a year now must file; the final letter of correspondence concerned the Supreme Lodge support of saving the Statue of Liberty. Each lodge was asked to donate 10 cents per member.

This amounted to $43.40 from our lodge.

Sister Mildred Horak made a motion, seconded by Sister Albina Milburn that we donate this amount for this worthy cause. Motion carried.

New business was then discussed.

There was a complaint from Mrs. Ruth Weiderhold concerning the loud music at our dances. After much discussion, the members decided to make every effort to solve the problem. It would be a great help if bands would just tone down their music when asked by the floor chairman. Floor chairmen do not have an easy job. They have to listen to all the complaints and try to solve them. If everyone would try to cooperate, it would be a big help.

Sister Magdeline Iselt made a motion that the lodge put in a 220 circuit at the stage. This motion was seconded by Sister Lucille Leitko.

Motion carried. Brother Werner Jatzlau was to see that this was taken care of.

There was some discussion concerning putting a gate where we have the new guard rail fence. Sister Connie Korth made a motion, seconded by Brother Ricky Ford, that we do nothing at the present time.

Motion carried.

Sister Dorothy Rackel read the minutes from the trustees' meeting held in October „concerning raises for the officers and other positions. Sister Doris Ford made a motion, seconded

by Sister Mildred Horak that the raise be approved. Motion carried.

Brother Ervin Iselt stated that the Fire Dept. agreed to pay for the labor on the new barbecue pits that are to be built. Our lodge will pay for the material. Brother Iselt also mentioned that, there were some dead trees on the fence line between the lodge and Mr. Zscheel's. Brother Iselt agreed to see that this job be taken care of.

The election of officers for 1986 was then held. There was some additional discussion on the Corene Iselt benefit dance scheduled for Friday, November 29th. It was decided to charge the usual hall rent and the lodge, in turn,

would donate it back in form of a check in order to keep .our books straight. Our lodge and community were saddened by the sudden death of Corene Iselt. Tobin and Denese Iselt, children of Corene, are members of our Lodge 13 Youth Club. Corene was a young woman of 37 years whom God chose to call home. Each of us should live our lives prepared in case God should choose to call us home at an unexpected time. May Corene's soul rest in peace. We will all miss her smiling face.

29, Taylor Donates $300

Lodge

The Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, November 10, 1985 at 4 p.m. with President Edwin Adamek presided at the meeting and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

We had a thank you note from Taylor Brethren Church for using the barbecue pit for their church function.

Minutes from our previous meeting were read, also treasurer's and Property Committee's reports were given.

A motion was made and seconded that we donate $300 to the Statue of Liberty project. It passed.

Youth Club Leader Melvin Steger reported 31 members present at their meeting and 10 adults. For their social, they will go to the mall in Austin.

We had election of officers and re elected were: President -- Edwin Adamek and Vice President -- Ronnie Rieger.

A motion was made that we elect the rest of the officers by acclamation, except the youth leader. We have a new youth leader, Donna Steger. We wish her the best of luck.

We are going to have our Christmas Party with our meeting Sunday, December 8,starting at 2 p.m. We will have a short meeting and then installation of officers. The youth club will present a short program and Santa Claus will arrive. We will have a covered dish supper at 5:30 p.m. Our lodge will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert.

Lodge 66, Waco Christmas Party The Entertainment Committee invites all our members to attend our "festive" Christmas Party, December 7th.

66 Elects Officers Lodge

President Ray Orsag called our regular monthly meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. November 17th. Flagbearers were Bill Warren and Larry Yates with Bill Warren leading everyone in the pledge.

All officers were present except for Youth Leader Kay Owen. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was received by from Engelke Sister Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. Sister Engelke asked that discussion of this be postponed until the January meeting in order to allow some time to read through it thoroughly.

Sister Pruitt read letters from President Leshikar and from Sid Pokladnik concerning the Statue of Liberty project. President Leshikar accepted the lodge's invitation to attend the Christmas Party and install the newl y - elected officers.

Minutes of the board meeting were read by Brother George Shilling.

The youth club report was given by Assistant Karen Shelton. The youth will hold its Christmas Party

Decemeber 16th at Mr. Gatti's Pizza.

Also, the youth will have a cake walk December 28th. The members agreed to give the youth club $200 in order to fix up the bags of goodies that are to be handed out to the children at the lodge's Christmas Party.

Sister Parma then reported on the Trust Fund. They received $25 from the sale of aluminum cans. She was presented with $100 from the Bingo Fund. The Trust Fund Committee, in turn, gave $200 to the Statue of Liberty project in honor of the Lodge 66 Youth Club.

Entertainment Committee chairman reported on upcoming activities. The Lodge 66 Christmas Party will be held December 7th.

Turkey, dressing and all the trimmings will be served. Ladies are asked to bring desserts. Also anyone who cares to help decorate the lodge should come Wednesday, December 4th.All help is greatly appreciated.

Sister Smith of the Fraternal Committee gave her report. Thank, yous were read from the following: Katherine York, Dixie Leathers, the McLennan County Co - op School, Louise Reich and the Coronary Heart Disease Fund. Mrs. Ruth Oswald, recipient of a donation, passed away.

Those receiving funds for the months of November and December are: Louis Sanchez, Twila Leshikar, Richard Kennon, Opal Zahirniak, Jewell Warhol, Family Abuse Center, Statue of Liberty Project, and the McLennan County Children's Protective Services all received $200 each. The Inner City Ministries received $100, and Caritas received $300.

Sister Leona Nors reported sending get well cards to Sue Pauling, Jewell Warhol, Opal Zahirniak and Edwin Sullivan. Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Pruitt and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Oswald.

President Orsag thanked all those who helped do some work around the hall and recognized each individual.

Members then voted to accept six new members and one transferee. They are Daniel L. Kocian, Steve R. Pickens, Henry M. Veselka, Le Ann Adair, Larry D. Adair and Jessica Adair. One transferee is Cristi Anne Nors from Lodge 183.

It was then voted to postpone our December meeting due to the holidays and also the social night until January.

Dear Friends and Neighbors: The officers and trustees of our lodge would like to invite all members out to the annual meeting to be held December 9, 1985 to elect new officers and to discuss new ideas for the year 1986.

Our last meeting was held November 11th. Everyone liked the new stage that has been reconstructed. We would like to thank all the members who helped out in making these necessary repairs.

We also would like to thank the Steve West family for donating a vacuum cleaner that was very much in need. In the last few weeks we have had great success with our Saturday night dances; also our Friday night dances are picking up.

Now that football season is over, we would like to remind everyone of the Friday night dances being held on the first and third Fridays of every month. We have a live band that plays country and rock music. We hope you can come out and join us.

Don't forget, we have a nicely repainted game room. Thanks to Charlie Goldman and Troy Harrison who came out to help us.

We also would like to thank Sherry McKenney, our youth leader, who is doing a great job with our youth club.

Dear Members: Our November meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Charlie Matcek, following a delicious fried chicken dinner which was donated by an anonymous donor.

We had a moment of silence for Charlie Horelica and Lillie Teykl.

88, Houston News Lodge

Saturday evening, November 16th, John Elzner, son of Wanda and Noel Kennedy and the late J.D. Elzner, was united in marriage with Carolyn Rawls in a lovely ceremony at Bammel Road Church of Christ. Our lodge song bird, Helen Hegwood, sang several songs accompanied on the piano by Naomi Spencer. Jeff Elzner served as his brother's best man and Jeff's little daughter, Christy, was one of the cute little flower girls. A reception for many family members and friends was held at the Greenwood Residence Club immediately following the ceremony.

After a short honeymoon trip to Galveston, the couple is making their home in Spring, Texas. John is a sales representative for Houston Poultry and Egg Company and Carolyn is employed at a local law firm. John's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Seth Duncan of Livingston and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Elzner of Houston. were all present for John's wedding as were several aunts and uncles from out of town. This is a 100 percent SPJST family who have been been active at Lodge 88 for many years. Wanda was the lodge treasurer, youth leader, Birthday Club sister, served on the Entertainment Committee and worked in the lodge office for several years. John, Jeff and Jode were all very active youth club members. Joe and Anna Elzner have had to curtail their lodge activities somewhat due to Joe's impaired vision but they attend as many functions as possible; so do Ruth and Seith Duncan from far away Livingston. Congratulations and best wishes to John and Carolyn Elzner.

Sister Clara Jecmenek is at home now feeling somewhat better but still weak. Husband Tommy is a good nurse and a very good cook so it won't be long until Clara will be well and back at the lodge activities. Clara is a Birthday Club sister and Tommy is a member of the Men's Club.

A.J. Stayton is scheduled for by pass surgery November 23rd. He is at St. Joseph's Hospital. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery. A.J. is vice chairman of our Board of Trustees and a member of the Bingo Committee and wife, Marie, is our Lodge 88 youth leader. That's a very busy couple and they will be missed while A.J. is recuperating.

Don't forget the lodge annual meeting Sunday, December 8th. It

starts at 10 a.m. for the short monthly meeting and continues into the annual meeting. A dinner will be furnished at noon for those attending the morning session. Plan to come out, express your opinion and vote. If you don't take the time and make the effort to participate, you have no right to make comments later. Be there.

Tickets are going fast for the Blue Room Christmas Party for Sunday, December 15th. Go by the lodge office and buy your tickets. Shirley and Josephine will be happy to assist you in making your table reservations.

The Youth Club Christmas program will be held Monday, December 16th at 7:30 p.m. After the youth present their program, Santa will appear to distribute the goodies. This is always a fun evening, so bring the children and the grandchildren and enjoy this program.

The holiday season is here and, as usual, there are many things planned so here is a list of our activities: December 4 -- Youth Club practice for the Christmas program; anyone wishing to participate, please be at National Hall at 7 p.m., afterwards the youth will be given a treat.

December 8 -- Don't forget the 4 lodges' party in Arlington.

December 15 -- Lodge 92 Christmas program at 6 p.m.

December 22 -- Lodge meeting at 1 p.m. Please bring a cake or pie for snacks afterwards, because we will not have a meal at this meeting.

Lodge 172, Pasadena Changes Meeting Date This is a notice to all members that the annual lodge meeting for December has been changed from Wednesday, December 25th, to Wednesday, December 18th,due to the fourth Wednesday being CHRISTMAS DAY. 172, Pasadena To Meet Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: We hope all our members, who were on the sick list, will be off of it with the best of health and be ready for the holiday activities that are coming up to be enjoyed.

Joe and I really enjoyed hearing the Singing Boys of Houston November 23rd when they put on a program for the Association of Retired Teachers.

This outstanding Choral Group of about 45 school boys from the Houston Independent School District was organized in 1962 and is known throughout North America and other places as the "Texas Ambassadors of Song."

I must tell you all one more thing about myself and, after this, I will only write about all of you. November 11, 1985, my step - sister and I went to California (Palm Springs area) to visit my sister, Mildred, who we haven't seen for 27 years. It certainly was an interesting visit.

Now, stop, look, and listen to this.

Our annual meeting was changed to the third Wednesday, December 18, 1985 due to Christmas Day coming on the fourth Wednesday, so remember the change and be sure to come. The attendance at our meetings has been real good. We are so glad to .,ee you come and keep coming and bring someone with you.

The time is coming, again, when I will need to turn in a report of charitable community work or service for 1985 performed by members from March 1st, 1985 to February 28th, 1986. This period accounts for the number of hours spent in service to others, for church or civic organization, etc. Also the number of dollars it took (cost); this is important.

Call me if you wish to talk about it, this is fraternalism in action. Does anyone have any idea of how much

this adds up to when everyone turns in their part of charitable deeds? It really makes a giant report.

We regret to report the loss of a good member of Lodge 172; it was Brother William Kowalski who passed away last week. We will miss him.

Esther, his wife, is a regular worker at the lodge. We all love her friendly disposition and happy smile. Please let us know when there is something we can help you with.

We are still selling cookbooks and Gold Seal Coupon books. We hope to build a driveway cover for the front entrance to our lodge hall.

New Year's Eve dance tickets are on sale. The Vrazels are providing the music. I hope to see you there.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge 92 Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: My little plum tree just outside my window has now lost almost all of its leaves and its branches are drooping in submissioin to the rapidly changing weather from the happy sunshiny days when the small humming birds were so busily sipping the red sweet nectar from the little red feeder which I kept supplied for their pleasure during the summer months. Now the little feeder has been brought in from the weather and has been placed carefully in its box until the little ones can return and begin all over again. Meanwhile, our attention must return to all the activities which are involved with the coming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Our Ladies' Circle opened with President Florence Greer, Vice President Dona Hubenak, Treasurer Evelyn Spacek and Secretary Frances Blake present.

with a silent prayer for all of the ones who were in the hospital and all those who were home sick.

Nancy and Joe Paprskar and Joe and Evelyn Zacek were welcomed as new members. Imogene Reaves, our visitor, was also welcomed.

Lillie McMillen, Sunshine chairperson, read a list of the sick and ones in the hospital; namely, Frances Laux, Bessie Prochaska, Rosie Zalesak, Billy Charles Hundle (son of Bennie Hundle) in the hospital with a heart by - pass. It also was reported that Mrs. Eva Coffee, longtime friend of many Czechs here, was very ill and in the hospital. We do hope that each one will soon be well and able to go home. Hurry and get well!

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Flora Koci, Elma Anderson, Ida Mayer, Lillie McMillen, Agnes Merlick and Victor Murphy.

The door prize, donated by Annie Belota, was won by ,Clara Cohen.

Flora Koci will donate the door prize for December.

Joyce Tesar gave a report on the Halloween Dance and then announced the dance Sunday, November 24th from 3 to 7 p.m. which will be a Battle Dance with Czech versus Western music; the "Czech Mates" and the "Celebrations" will play. The admission will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children from 13 to 16.

Esta Belle Hubenak announced the Children's Christmas program for December 15th. She also thanked for help in making the costumes and to bring cookies for refreshments at that time.

Our Christmas dinner will be the same as the Thanksgiving dinner except for the meat. Mrs. Tesar will cook both hams furnished by the Circle. Each one is to bring the same vegetables, salads, etc. as we did for the Thanksgiving dinner. The cost for non - members will be $3 and the same for members who do not bring a dish.

Christmas exchange gifts will be not less than $3.00.

We had a lot of anniversaries for the month of November. We wish to congratulate all of them. Bennie and Mary Pavey had their golden wedding anniversary dinner celebration at the Sokol on Boat Club Road, November 17th. It was a huge affair with friends from in and out of the State of Texas.

A delicious dinner was served after which traditional Czech dancing and merriment took place. Everyone enjoyed it and will always have their memories of fun and frolic.

Jimmy and Florence Greer celebrated 44th their wedding anniversary, November 19th.

Arthur and Tillie Gillis celebrated their 54th anniversary, November 22nd.

Frank, Jr. and Joyce Tesar, our manager and wife, will celebrate their 21st anniversary November 28th.

We wish all of you many happy and prosperous years to come.

Hostesses for our December 10th meeting will be Mary Powers, Phyllis and Hermina Cihacek and Maggie Konecny. Don't forget your dish and come and have fun! Be seeing you.

OF TEXAS SESQUICENTENNIAL CZECH GENEALOGY SEMINAR AT LODGE POKROK HOUSTON NO. 88 The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, in cooperation with Lodge No. 88 will conduct a seminar in Czech Genealogy in the facilities at SPJST Lodge No. 88 at 1435 Beall Street, in Houston Sunday, February 23, 1986. This Czech Genealogy Seminar will start at 10 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. with registration from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Topics to be presented will include Czechs on the Passenger Lists, villages of origin in Czechoslovakia, cemetery inventories in Texas, records of Czechs in the Courthouses, Czech families in the four censuses before 1900, and genealogical research in the Archives in present Czechoslovakia. Books pertinent to our Czech heritage and genealogy will be available for review or purchase.

Persons knowledgeable in special phases of Czech genealogy will be available to answer your questions.

Maps of Czechoslovakia will be shown and available for purchase.

Lodge 13 Youth

Held Meeting The Dime Box Youth Club held their last monthly meeting Sunday, November 17, 1985 at 3:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Chelli Fritz and Monica Spitzenberger led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll was called. There were nineteen members and five adults at the meeting.

The secretary's minutes and treasurer's report were then read and approved.

The youth club will donate $50 to the family of Corine Iselt.

We have a slumber party planned for December 6th at 7 p.m. at the hall.

Everyone is asked to wear light colored clothing for the event.

We will also have a Christmas Party at our next meeting December 15th.

After the meeting was adjourned, we played games and worked on a craft.

Youth Club News RENEA MACIK [Picture not available] LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Renea Macik has been a member of Lodge 39 for the past 14 years. She and her sister have been working with the youth club for four years. Renea enjoys spending her free time with her 21/2 - year - old daughter, Krystil. She is always willing to be involved with children whether it is through the SPJST or the church. Working with childen and doing all sorts of crafts are Renea's favorite pastimes. She is a member of the Christian Education and Women's Fellowship group of her church. Renea has helped the Lodge 39 Youth Club grow from five youth members to an enthusiastic 18. It is her goal to double the youth club membership within the next couple of years. A person with her love of children and dedication to the SPJST is a definite asset to our Society.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, of Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother EDWIN HENRY BESEDA of 117 North Oak in Lacy - Lakeview, who passed away Tuesday, October 8, 1985 at the age of 61.

Services for Brother Edwin were held Thursday, October 10th, in West at the West Brethren Church.

Conducting the services were Rev. Lawrence Junek and Rev. Henry Beseda. Burial took place in the Tobola Cemetery in Penelope.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Beseda of Waco; his mother, Emilie Beseda of West; one daughter, Susan Walters of Cleburne, Texas; one brother, Willie Beseda of Waco; and one grandson, Bailey Justin Walters of Cleburne.

Brother Edwin became a member of Lodge 66 in November 1955.

Zdrubek, No. 112, Guy, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother RUDOLPH FRANK SUROV EC, age 75, who passed away Wednesday, October 30, 1985, at his home in Damon, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Friday, November 1, at the Garmany & Carden Chapel in Needville, with Rev. Richard Avery officiating. Burial was in the Needville Public Cemetery.

Survivors include three sisters, Lydia Michalec of Sweeney, Bessie Susan of Needville and Milady Arnold of West Columbia; three brothers, Ludvik Surovec of Wharton, Victor Surovec of Brazoria and Albert Surovec of Bakersfield, California; and several nieces and nephews.

Brother Rudolph was a farmer and served in the Air Force during World War 11.

Pallbearers were nephews and grandnephews. Funeral services were under the direction of Garmany and Carden Funeral directors.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Johnnie Knesek who died suddenly October 30, 1985 at his home in Galveston, Texas at the age of 63.

Mass was held Thursday night at Broadway Funeral Home in Galveston.

Funeral services for Brother Johnnie Knesek were held Friday, November 1st in Phillip - Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery at Caldwell, Texas.

Brother Knesek was born October 23, 1922 in Lyons, Texas to the late Gus and Carrie Gaydusek Knesek. He grew up in the Lyons area and was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Frenstat and a member of SPJST Rozkvet Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena.

He was a resident of Galveston and worked for Todd Shipyard for over 40 years. He was married to Hattie (Elsik) Vavra 26 April 1952.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie Knesek of Galveston; stepson, Douglas Vavra of Galveston; three step - grandchildren and four step great - grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Annie Kudelka, Mrs. Angeline Tschoerner, Mrs. Martha Bohacek, Mrs. Lydia Bohacek, Mrs. Dorothy Sulak, Mrs. Margret Krueger; four brothers, Willie Knesek, Gussie Knesek, Eddie Knesek and Earnest Knesek.

Pallbearers were nephews, Ronney Knesek, Tim Knesek, Jeffrey Krueger, Larry Tschoerner, Melvin Knesek and Kenneth Bohacek.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple. Hewitt Funeral Home of Temple was in charge.

one hundred guests, honoring the couple on their fiftieth (50th) anniversary was held at Eastern Hills Country Club in Garland, Texas December 1, 1985. The reception was hosted by the couple's two daughters and their husbands, Bobbie Anne and John Bickle of Dallas and Betty and James Grier of Houston, Texas.

Charley is a retired automobile mechanic, having worked at several repair shops in the Dallas area. Annie is a retired cashier after 28 years in food service with the Dallas Independent School District.

Their four grandsons are John W. Bickle, Jr., a graduate student at the University of California at Irvine, California; Scott Bickle, a junior at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas; Jason Grier, a freshman at Texas A&M University; and Jeffrey Grier, who attends Stratford High School in Houston, Texas.

Each member of the family belongs to Lodge Pokrok No. 84 in Dallas where Charley has been the bartender for more than 30 years. Annie and Charley received their 50 - year pins from Lodge 84.

Nearly 300,000 Texas - grown trees should be available this year and should push sales beyond the $4 million mark.

Texas currently boasts about 3,200 acres of Christmas trees, with some 1,000 trees per acre. Most of these are Virginia pines native to the Appalachian area of the southeastern U.S. Another species, the Afghan or Elderica pine, is now being grown in central, western and southern areas of Texas. The trees are generally ready to harvest in about four years, says Walterscheidt.

K 100 letemu vSrroei timrti profesora Jakuba Skody prvniho teditele ceskeho gymnasia v Picerove.

28.fijna pied 100 lety v roce 1885 zemfel v Pferove v mladem veku pouhYch 50 let Jakub Skoda, spisovatel, pfekladatel, pfedni organizator eeskeho gkolstvf, profesor a prvni feditel eeskeho pferovskeho gymnasia. Poeitek eeskeho gymnasia v Pferove byl velmi telkY, jelikot bylo potfebi nejen usilovat o mfstnosti k vyueovini, planovat yYstaybu nove gkolni budovy ale i bojovat o holou existenci teto eeske gkoly. VYvoj v jinYch morayskYch mestech totit ukazoval, zfizeni eeskeho gymnasia bylo trnem v oku nemeckemu obyvatelstvu. Vznik eeskeho gymnasia ei jine eeske stfedni gkoly v to dobe na Morave (taktel bylo tomu i v echich) vidy zesilil vinu rakouskeho nacionalismu, kterY se snail pfekazit za kaldou cenu studia eeske mladete na eeskYch stfednich gkolach. Tak tomu bylo na pffklad v Hranicfch, kde eeske gymnasium, zaloiene v roce 1872, bylo jil v roce 1873 zmeneno na gymnasium nemecke.

Stavebni plany teto nove gymnasijni budoby byly poslany v roce 1878 na svetovou vYstavu do Pah& ye Francii, kde byly vyznamenany zlatou medaili.

Prvni maturitni zkou gky se konaly v nove postavene gkolM budove v eervnu 1878. Gymnasijni feditel Jakub Skoda byl tei i vYteenY pedagog; jeho vztah k studentilm byl naroenY, ale ta laskavy. Dovedl s kaldYm promluvit, kaldemu poradit a byl vkly pfipraven zastat se vgech tech, co potfebovali pomoci. Skoda byl tak oblfben profesorskYm sborem pferovskeho gymnasia, to nikdo za jeho feditelovini nechtel opustit tistav a jft ueit nekam jinam. K pferovskemu gymnasiu a tim i k Jakobu Skodovi, zakladateli teto gkoly, mne viii vzpomfnky na par tYdnu meho pfechodneho studia na tomto ustave behem mobilisace eeskoslovenske armady v zari 1938. Mou almu mater-klasicke (arcibiskupske) gymnasium ve tvaru etverce, s pfilehlou rovnei etvercovou ubykaeni budovou, pfeyzala eeskoslovenska armada pro mobilisujici brance a pro skladigte vojenskeho materiilu. My, gymnasiste, jsme pornahali v den pfevzeti gkoinich budov vyniget rfiznou vojenskou yYstroj z nikladnich vojenskYch aut a druhY den jsme se rozjeli do svYch domovii. gkola byla uzavfena na neureito, v ge vypadalo, to dojde k valce. Po mem pfljezdu do rodneho Pferova jsem provizorne pokraeoval studovat na pferovskem statnfm reilnern gymnasiu. Po neblahem mnichovskem diktite a demobilisaci teskosiovenske armady, gkola v Kromefili byla zase otevfena a já se vratil na tamej gf klasicke gymnasium. Jelikot studentstvo tohoto tistavu bylo ze v gech koutit tech a Moravy, tak pir jednotlivcd se do gkoly nevritilo, ponevadl jejich domovy byly v pohranief. Po okupaci oklegtene stare viasti 15.bfezna 1939 'aylo pferovske gymnasium zabrano aemci hned druhY den 16.bfezna 39 a, "Svete zbof se!", pojmenovino Adolf Hitler Kasserne! Gymnasijni vyueovini bylo vgak v nekolika dnech obnoveno v budovich jinYch pferovskYch gkol. Budovy klasickeho gymnasia v Kromeffii byly zabrany behem t. zv. uhelnYch prazdnin zaeatkem bfezna 1942 pro t. zv.

Blitzmadel neboli pro vYcvik tenskYch oddflit nemecke armady v obsluze svetlomet0. Gymnasijni vyueovanf bylo na nejakou dobu zastaveno a jistou dobu se mluvilo o upinem zrugenf tohoto klasickeho ustavu;

Za nekolik jenom tSkinfi budou zde opet mile svatky vanoeni, ktere i do vgednich dnu starosti ptina geji mnoho utegeneho kouzla. Locally produced, Santa's Mailbag incorporates the events of the season into meaningful lessons. Santa reads letters from children in the TV 46 viewingarea, gives tips on Christmas crafts and introduces a special friend who shares his Christmas memories.

Santa's Mailbag is thirty minutes in length and will air each weekday before Christmas, beginningDecember 16th at 4:30 p.m. A total of seven programs will be produced by KNCTstaff and Telecommunicationsstudents.
