Happy Thanksgiving In this issue Brother Leonard Mikeska, acting publicity officer for TOCA, has a press release concerning the Texans of Czech . Ancestry or Texan eskeho Piivodu promoting the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial. We find it rather interesting, therefore, we encourage everyone to read it and to whom to write to get the interest necessary. Good luck! *** The Statue of Liberty project fund is steadily increasing each week by our SPJST lodges which is very commendable of them. This will certainly give our Czech Society a very good reputation that our members do care to preserve the valuable history of our forefathers who helped make the United States what it is today. Hats off to the lodge members who care, let us endeavor to make it 100 percent ALL THE WAY! *** Are you the kind of person who feels a sense of personal reward when you help others? Are you the kind of person who cares about your community and would like to help it be a better and safer place to live? If so, there is a good chance that you would be an ideal volunteer for an organization that has been in existence for the past 88 years.

Working for the SPJST, you will be helping people of all ages --- young and old, those who lost their loved ones, lost a home in fire and/or hurricane --helping them achieve direction, hope and inner strength and a chance for a better future.

We, as members of the SPJST should feel proud and be fortunate to belong to such an organization where the Society loaned money to the S.P.J.S.T Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville (separate chartered organizations) to offer older citizens companionship and diversifed activities through its community volunteers.

For the younger generation, it has held strong youth programs since the 1950s, plus camping are among other programs for this generation gap. You may like to serve as a local lodge youth leader.

If you love children, you will be glad to know that youth programs give youngsters, the opportunity to take part in wholesome activities ranging from art work to speech competition and sports. At the same time, they build character and teach important values such as honesty and respect for others. *** The next time you use one of those automated tellers at your bank, don't discard the receipt too fast. It could come in handy later on if you discover an error has been made, advises the Federal Trade Commission. Under the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, you have 60 days from the date a problem or error appears on your periodic statement or terminal receipt to notify the bank. Once it has been notified, the bank has 10 business days to investigate and tell you the results. If

the bank needs more time, it may take up to 45 days to complete the investigation -- but only if the money in dispute is returned to your account until the matter is settled. If you fail to report the error within 60 days, you could be out of luck. *** of repeated hurricanes, In a year earthquakes and other natural disasters, many homeowners are wondering how well their properties are covered by insurance. Too often, the answer is: Not very well.

Damage caused by rain and wind is automatically covered by most homeowners' policies. But destruction resulting from floods, earthquakes, nuclear accidents and warfare usually is excluded from coverage, warns the Insurance Information Institute.

Flood insurance or earthquake insurance must be bought separately, either as an attachment to an existing policy or as a whole new contract.

If a tree fell on your roof during the recent hurricane, for example, rain damage that resulted would probably be covered by your homeowners' policies. But if the damage you sustained was a direct result of flooding, it would be covered only by flood insurance. In especially susceptible areas, special low - cost flood insurance is available from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In places with the most seismic activity, earthquake insurance usually is written as an attachment to a regular homeowner's policy. In high - risk areas, such as San Francisco, a deductible of as much as 10 percent of the insured value of the home may be included. In other seismically active slates, such as Missouri and New York, where the risk of a major earthquake is considered less, the deductible may be as low as 2 percent of the insured home replacement value.

Despite the well - known risks, many Californians don't have earthquake insurance. Some may not know it is available, while others are opting for a more fatalistic approach. To rectify that, the California Legislature recently passed a law requiring insurers to offer earthquake coverage to anybody buying a homeowner's policy and to make sure that policyholders know about the coverage. *** With hospitals under increasing pressure to cut medicare costs, it is largely up to patients to make sure that their health care does not suffer. The American Association of Retired Persons has published a 16 - page booklet describing how patients can protect their rights to quality care. The bathroom medicine cabinet found in most homes may not be a very good place to store medicines after all, warns the Senate Special Committee on Aging. Not only is it too easy for children to reach, but the warm, moist atmosphere of the bathroom can cause some drugs to deteriorate. Drugs -- both prescription and over - the - counter types -- should be kept in a cool, dry place kids can't reach. Some drugs must be refrigerated; that should be indicated on the label. Don't keep any drug past its expiration date, and don't use any medicine that has changed color, odor or consistency. ***

Notice To Lodge 54, West Members Due to certain circumstances, the annual meeting of Lodge 54 had to-be changed to Sunday, December 8th at 1 p.m. It is our understanding that the premises are rented for a local affair for December 1st. Therefore, we advise you to change your calendar date from December 1st to December 8th.

This being an annual meeting and holiday season, there will be a full course meal with refreshments. Ladies are asked to bring salads and/or pastries to complete the menu. Santa also promised to pay the youth a visit, so bring your children and/or grandchildren who are members.

Cottonwood's Christmas Party Planned The Christmas Party of SPJST Lodge No. 6 will be held Sunday, December 1st. Our lodge officers cordially invite the officers of the Supreme Lodge and Editor of the Vestnik. We are inviting all the members to come out and have a good time.

The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 at Cottonwood was held Sunday, November 10, 1985 at 3 p.m.

President Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order by asking Lanette Hykel and Tammi Dobecka to lead the Pledge of Allegiance with Lanette reciting the SPJST Pledge.

All officers were present, also nineteen members were in attendance.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read. All other reports were in order.

Correspondence was read from the Supreme Lodge concerning, the donations to the Statue of Liberty.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth went to Six Flags in October. The youth made Christmas cards for the rest home. They will also be making some gifts for the rest home. The youth had their Halloween Party, November 1st. Everyone had a good time. Each one is asked to come Friday night because there are only two Fridays left to practice on their Christmas program. The Christmas Party will be held Sunday, December 1st. The youth will have a fund raising project at the party. They will take the gifts to West Rest Haven, Friday, December 20th, with refreshments at the hall afterwards.

Tammi Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

Board of Trustees' report was given

by Brother George Straten. A date was set to work on the hall November 23th, weather permitting. Donation to the Statue of Liberty was discussed and the type of meal to be served at the Christmas Party. Next trustees' meeting will be Friday, January 3, 1986.

Our membership decided to donate to the Statue of Liberty. This will be done by having a small auction at our Christmas Party.

Door prizes drawn were: $ tu -David Pavelka, not present; $10 -Lumir Holecek, not present; $6 progressive door prize -- Nancy Kallus, not present. The $2 door prize was won by Martha Monthei.

Our next monthly meeting will be Sunday, December 1st with election of officers and our Christmas Party.

Tabor Lodge 17 To Meet New

Dear Members: Lodge 17, New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting November 3 with all officers present.

A letter was read from Supreme Lodge about donating 10 cents per member to fund to "Light the Torch."

We agreed to do this.

We have a new member, Olexis Caroline Johnson, we would like to welcome.

Profit from the barbecue was smaller than last year but, considering the weather, we were all happy with the results.

Carol Petty has informed us that she will give up her job as custodian, January 1st and will not accept nomination for this position at our annual meeting.

The lodge will have a cleanup November 25th at 6 p.m. A meal will be provided by those helping.

December 1st we will have our memorial service at 6 p.m. with SL President Howard Leshikar officiating. We also will have a youth program with Melanie Matus and Shaunna Haisler, our first place state group talent winners from 1985 State YAD. The rest of the youth club also will participate. Afterwards, we will have our Christmas dinner. Ladies are asked to bring the sweets for this event.

Dear Members and Friends: Well, where are you going to dig it? as the saying goes. I thought I had better write a few lines from our lodge.

The November meeting was called to order Sunday, November 3 by President Bohac at 2 p.m., with all

officers present and with only thirteen members in attendance.

The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was recited by the members present.

Our president asked the members to remain standing for a moment of silence to our deceased members.

Secretary Latham read the minutes of October 1985 meeting. They were accepted as read.

A motion was made by Secretary Latham and seconded by Joe Barabas that we (our lodge) donate $100 to the Statue of Liberty Project. The motion carried. This is to renovate the Statue of Liberty.

Brother Jerry Massar and his brother, Darwin, recently visited in Czechoslovakia. He gave us a brief rundown of their visit there and the many places they visited.

Our congratulations to two of our lodge members, Brother Frank Pajestka, Sr. and Frankie Pajestka, Jr., for winning second place in the "42" Tournament that was held at Lodge 15, Buckholts. They brought back two beautiful trophies.

President Bohac thanked all the members who came out to clean the hall recently. I mean we gave it an A - 1 cleaning; I had the names of all who were there, but I misplaced it somewhere.

We accepted two new members to our lodge, namely, Wilson Wendler and Valerie Wendler. Darvin Ivicic took out additional insurance.

I am sorry to report that one of our faithful members, Brother William Martinets, passed away at the age of 85. Funeral services for Brother Martinets were held at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett, with interment in Holland City Cemetery.

On our sick list we have Douglas Barabas who is a patient in the VA Hospital in Temple.

This is a reminder that our annual meeting will be held Sunday, December 1st at 3 p.m.; also with election of officers for the coming year, and a good lunch will be served after the meeting. So make it a point to be there.

The weather has been very nice in these parts, plenty of rain, nice and warm temperature, everything growing like in the spring. We have Irish potatoes large as hen eggs, turnips, red beets, cucumbers, squash and made a lot of pecans for which we are thankful.

Those at the meeting who had birthdays in November are Mrs. Glen Latham and Eddy Kunz.

Door prize winners were D.I. Bohac, Billy Latham, Jo Ann Benner and Otto Horelica.

88 November Meeting Report

Our regular monthly meeting was November 11th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. As•this year approaches its close, plans for our annual meeting are being made. Wednesday, November 20, 1985—VESTNIK/5 correspondence. Correspondence included the request from Supreme Lodge to participate in an effort to raise $8,100 by December 31st to be used for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. A check from Sister Thelma Maresh in the amount of $25 to be included with our lodge contributions to this fund was also acknowledged.

Our list of new applicants for membership was read and approved. It should be noted that our number of applicants is decreasing. Sister Helmcamp spoke to us regarding the seriousness of allowing our sales of insurance to decrease rather than increase. The Bylaws now require us to increase sales between conventions in order to increase our number delegates. Maybe we, as members, need to assist our sales representatives by finding possible candidates for membership.

President Ermis thanked all for their help in making Czech Day a very successful day. Financial reports were read by our financial secretary and treasurer for the month of October.

Sister Marie Stayton reported that the youth club enjoyed its Halloween Party and gave a progress report of the "tab saving" project. She thanked members and committees who have assisted with this project. Over 17,000 tabs have been turned in for the benefit of children who need kidney machines.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Brother Cox informed us that tickets for the New Year's Eve dance must be paid in full by DECEMBER 16th.

Chairman of the Social Night Willie Wehring announced that 16 turkeys will be given away Thursday, November 21, and another 16, December 19th. Come try your luck with Bingo and the drawings for the turkeys. Someone will win - why not you?

There will be a Blue Room Christmas Party held December 15th.

The usual low price of $10 per person, and dinner, dancing and drinks will be available.

Brother Homer Alexander read letters of thanks from Covenant House and San Jose Clinic for donations they received. His next project is to buy toys for some of the children at these homes. Many of these children will not receive a gift unless someone like you helps. Please leave a donation of whatever cash you can in the office.

He plans to spend approximately $4 per child. How many can you help?

Sister Kosut read her report of Benevolence, followed by a draft of the proposed changes to the Rules & Regulations which will be voted on at the annual meeting.

There were only 77 members present, probably due to the very wet weather which caused much flooding.

Lodge 88, Houston News In case anyone missed the lodge letters this past month, let me explain.

Ed and I rented a place on the beach at Panama City Beach, Florida for a month. We stayed in one place and really learned to relax and have a great time. We're so relaxed now that we are at home, that I think the word should be changed to lazy.

Sister Clara Jecmenek is confined at St. Joseph's Hospital but iaimproving.

She had a bout with a respiratory problem and then complications from some medication. At this time she is in a room, having been moved from the Intermediate Care Unit.

Sister Oleta Hanus fell and broke her hip while doing some painting. She was like the painter on a stepladder who stepped back to admire his work.

She had surgery two weeks ago and is already up and around with the aid of a walker. She said it would be another week before she will be able to be out but is feeling very well considering her injury.

Jerry and Bessie Kolacny went on a two - week camping trip to Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, and then back toward home through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. They stopped at many points of interest along the way, including the Grand Ole Opry and Plains, Georgia. That couple really enjoys trips in their little e?. camper.

Joe and Della Miksch, Louis and Elsie Roznovsky, August and Mary Roznovsky, and Miro and Alice Bily flew to Las Vegas, October, 23rd. A great time was had by all from what I hear. Joe and Della are already planning another trip very soon.

October 12th, Jimmy Anders and Julie Yeager were united in marriage at All Saints Catholic Church. A reception was held in the Chandelier Ballroom that afternoon following the ceremony. Jimmy is a Lodge 88 member; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Anders also are members.

This same date, October 12th, Greg Wahlberg and Brenda Loyd were married in Cat Springs, Texas, with a reception for family and friends at the Cat Springs Agriculture Hall. Greg is the son of Jimmy and Bernice Wahlberg, active members of Lodge 88. Many lodge members went to Cat Springs for this event. Brenda is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Loyd of Houston. Greg and Brenda are both 1982 graduates of Texas A&M University. Greg is employed by Atlas Machine Products and Brenda is a dental hygenist in Houston so they plan to make Houston their home. The lovely wedding ceremony was held in a small church in Cat Springs with the bridesmaids attired in green. Mrs. Wahlberg wore a long mauve gown and Mrs. Loyd wore a white and yellow dress. The dinner was catered

by Wehring Caterers of Houston and The Hall of Fame Gang provided music for the lively dance.

Friday, November 1st, All Saints Catholic Church was again the scene of a lovely wedding. Vivian Hegwood and Ed Baker, Jr. were united in marrige. Vivian was escorted down the aisle by her father King, and Vikki Huble served as her sister's matron of honor. Vikki and the five bridesmaids were all dressed in mauve as were the bride's mother, Helen Hegwood, and the groom's mother, Mary Baker.

Vernon and Vincent Hegwood, Vivian's brothers, acted as ushers and also read scripture readings during the ceremony. A reception followed with family and many friends attending in the Chandelier Ballroom. The reception was catered by Weddings By Renne. A rehearsal dinner was hosted

by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baker, Sr., Thursday, October 31st at Northgate Country Club. Vivian and Eddie Baker are now residing in Houston where Eddie is employed and Vivian is planning to finish her last year of college starting at mid - term.

The Texas Brew, a popular country/western band, appears Friday, December 6th for the dancing pleasure of the country/western fans, with Manny Green playing Saturday, December 7th. This will be a DRESS CODE dance and advance tickets are now on sale.

The Blue Room Committee has scheduled their Blue Room Christmas dance for Sunday, December 15th.

Barbecue ribs and chicken will be served and The Ellinger Combo will provide the music. Tickets are now on sale in the lodge office. Go by the lodge and buy your tickets and make your table reservations early.

139 November Meeting Lodge

The November meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 was called to order by President Vincent Hechler. The minutes of the last meeting were read

by Secretary Tommie Lostak.

Treasurer Lonnie Lostak and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp gave their respective reports.

Secretary Lostak read a letter from the Supreme Lodge asking Lodge 139 to join in the efforts to restore the Statue of Liberty by contributing to the SPJST Statue of Liberty Project. It was unanimously voted for the lodge to make the requested contribution.

Following a tradition of several years, it was voted for the lodge, once again, to give all senior citizen members over the age of seventy a Christmas turkey. The turkeys will be purchased and delivered to the eligible members by Tommie Lostak in time for their Christmas dinners.

Among other business for the December meeting will be the election of officers. The meeting has been changed to the first Wednesday, December 4th. We would ask all members to make a note of this on their calendars. After adjournment of the meeting there will be a social only for those members attending the meeting.

Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Jerry Milan; he led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present.

All the reports were approved as read.

Brother Steinman gave a good report on the District III meeting.

Eight of seven of our members and guest Shirley Obal Clegg of Surrey, B.C. attended. Brother Orsag, president of Lodge 66, really made everyone welcome. I told him he was a wonderful host. We all enjoyed the delicious dinner and fellowship.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland, reported on the success of the Halloween Party. We had a large turnout; it seemed as if the spookhouse was special this year. She wants to thank all of you who helped in any way and a special thanks to all the sisters for the cakewalk cakes which did so well; and all the goodies for the social following. She reminded us of the Christmas Party that will be held Thursday, December 19 at 7 p.m. and is, again, asking the sisters for goodies for the social. Santa will be there. The youth club is donating $50 to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor.

Brother Jerry reported on taking Frank and Vera Matustik of Kunovice, Uher Hradiste to the Museum at our Home Office, and he said they really enjoyed it since so much was in the Czech language that they could read and were so amazed at all the books.

They said they didn't have that at home. Frank and Vera caused a lot of excitement to the family because it was a dream they thought could never happen. They were kept on the run and enjoyed visiting with Brother Rudy and Sister Millie Wruble in their home and with seeing all of Millie's collections from when they were in Kunovice. They also enjoyed Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alhom and Sister Frances Tirk. who also visited them in Czechoslovakia. We were happy to hear they arrived home safely Sunday, October 27th. They felt honored that Sister Ann Banfi of Chicago and Shirley Obal Clegg of Canada flew in to see them. Sister Banfi also had visited them while in Europe.

Brother Joe and Sister Carrie Milan barely made it back from their trip to San Francisco to visit the out - of towners. They took Shirley Clegg to the museum and said thay had a wonderful visit with all at the Supreme Lodge offices, and Shirley really enjoyed the museum. They also took her to San Antonio and Austin. Sister Deanne Schwabowski from Chicago has been visiting in the homes of her aunts, Sister Tina Cox and Sister Henrietta Milan and families. While here,she found out that January 1st she will be in Computer Designs at General Dynamics. We welcome her to Fort Worth.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on get well cards sent and read a thank you from the family of Evelyn Ray in New Orleans.

We just heard Brother Rudy Wruble of Lodge 92 will enter the hospital (his 6th trip) November 18th and have an operation on his hip again the 19th.

Good luck this time Rudy and get well soon.

Sister Anna Johnson was our door prizewinner so she is leaving today with her sister - in - law from New Orleans for Las Vegas. Good luck!

Dear Members: We have had lots of out - of - town and state visitors and they all expressed themselves that we should be proud of our museum. A Canadian visitor even placed a writeup in issue No. 9 of Cechoslovensky Svet (Cechoslovakian World); that made us feel real good.

Now I would like to have someone send me well - worn boy's shoes (not slippers); we have a dressed farmer boy about 6 years old but no shoes.

I would like to have a set of wagon bows (wood) like those used to use on cross - country prairie schooners or wagons. I would also like to get a lady's U.S. Army uniform; these three items would help round out our museum like it should be. We also need two men mannikins and two lady mannequins badly (in any shape).

Recently we were presented with a paper upper half with half of the back part of its head chopped off; come see it, you will never believe it to be the same one!

Also, a discussion followed about the visits to area rest homes. We are to go sing to Temple Care Center on 31st Street and Marlandwood Road on our regular rehearsal date: Tuesday, November 26th at 7 p.m. We are to meet there instead of the hall.

Tuesday, December 3rd, we will meet at the hall at 7:30 p.m. for a practice of the Christmas carols for our SPJST Lodge 47 Christmas Party.

Our visit to Southland Villa Rest Home on South Fifth Street is set for Tuesday, December 10th at 7 p.m., again, on a regular rehearsal date. The

Czech communities, lodges and individuals who plan to be involved, in activities for the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial as members of TEXANS ESKEHO 131:JVODU are advised that help is on the way! Many persons have volunteered to assist and advise you in various phases of the Sesquicentennial project.

John P. Skrabanek

Receives Distinguished Recognition College Station -- John P. Skrabanek, fiscal officer for the Texas Engineering Extension Service, received the 1985 distinguished service award for administrative staff during the extension service's annual staff conference in September.

Brother Skrabanek is a charter member and past treasurer of SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan - College Station.

He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1968 and from Texas A&M University in 1972 with a BBA degree in accounting.

He worked in the fiscal office at Texas A&M before joining the extension service in 1976. He was promoted to fiscal officer in 1977, a position in which he has been responsible for the automation of accounting records and for the establishment of an independent business office within TEEX. Brother Skrabanek is married to the former Jan Vernon of College Station.

They have a two - year - old daughter, Julie.

KNCT TV 46 takes a special interest in children year round and December is especially a great month for TV 46's younger viewers.

Telecommunications students and TV 46 staff spend many hours producing a local Christmas program called, "Santa's Mailbag." In each program Santa will read letters from children around Central Texas. Also, aspects of the true meaning of giving will be featured. The program will be broadcast weekdays at 4:30 p.m. beginning December 16th.

If you have a youngster, they can send their letter to Santa at KNCT, U.S. Hwy. 190 West, Killeen, Texas 76542. Letters must be received at the KNCT studios by November 20th, so Santa can read them on the air.

From The ;cult Leaders Lodge 6, Cottonwood Yr, Donated To Charities Dear Readers: Our youth club held their meeting at 2:30 p.m. November 10, 1985 with a fair attendance.

They went with adult members to Six Flags, October 13th and all had a good time. On our way going home, all of us stopped and ate supper.

The club youngsters made Christmas cards and also are making Christmas gifts for the rest home. The youth plan to visit the elderly and distribute gifts at 7 p.m. December 20th, so all club members plan to be at Rest Haven.

Our youth club donated cakes as well as other items to different charities.

A few members of our lodge attended the District III fall meeting at Lodge 66. The meeting was nice, a very good meal was served, and Lodge 66 members were good hosts.

The Halloween Party was well attended; we had hot dogs, chips, dips, cookies, candies and drinks.

Our forthcoming meeting and Christmas Party will be held December 1st. We will have the youth meeting at 2:15 p.m.; lodge meeting at 3 p.m.; supper, program with Santa Claus, and exchange gifts following the meeting. We need all our members to help us sing for the program; practices were scheduled for November 15th and 22nd; since some of you didn't make the November 15th practice, please try November 22nd at 7 p.m. We need everyone's help for it to be a lot of fun.

The youth club is also selling tickets on a cooler, doll, zoo, animal toys, plus other items. This is our Christmas money - making project.

We have been busy. We had a nice program for our 75th anniversary; then last Sunday, we went bowling.

We are now working on our Christmas progfam to be held December 15 at 6 p.m. We will practice for the program December 4 at 7 p.m.

Sunday, October 27, 1985, the Dime Box Youth Club held a meeting. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Keith Spitzenberger. We then were led by Monica Spitzenberger in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was called and the treasurer's report was given.

We discussed having a Slumber Party in November or December.

Door prizes were then awarded and the meeting was adjourned. After the meeting, a hayride and spookhouse were enjoyed by all.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting November 7, 1985 at 7 p.m. President Lori Holub called the meeting to order.

Jody Henderson led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Danny Borak read the minutes of our previous meeting. The minutes remained approved as read.

At this time Treasurer Darrin Dybala gave his report, collected monthly dues and called the roll.

In discussion of old business, Michael Marek gave a report on District VI fall meeting. Several members attended the meeting and had a successful fund raising project.

When we moved on to new business, there were several items to discuss. It was quickly decided that the next meeting would be a Christmas Party for the members and their families.

Michael Marek made a motion that instead of exchanging gifts at the party, we should bring a gift to give to the needy families of our community.

Everyone agreed.

DYC Janet Marek told us that we had been invited to help decorate for the mother lodge Christmas Party, December 18th. All wanted to help, so

we decicred to decorate the Hillje Hall, December 17th.

We are still selling some porcelain Christmas ornaments and will also be starting a Christmas fund raising project. We will be giving away a Christmas wreath, a decorated Christmas tree, a gingerbread house, and a holiday candle arrangement.

For November project each youth wrote a prayer of thanks. Everyone recited their prayer in front of the group.

For December we will each create original Christmas ornaments to be judged.

The thirteen attending members wished a "Happy Birthday" to Veronica Bartos and Mrs. Mary Ann Karasek. Both will be celebrating birthdays in November.

The meeting was then adjourned.

After the meeting, Mrs. Charlene Borak served refreshments. We enjoyed cookies and punch. For craft we made pinecone turkeys. Our next meeting and Christmas Party will be held December 5th at 7 p.m., in the American Legion Auxiliary Hall.

We then decided to have a youth slumber party Friday, November 29th at 7 p.m. There will be more information at the next meeting. We nominated Chelli Fritz to be our photographer for our Scrapbook Committee.

Afterward, we had a hayride and haunted house. Everyone had a great time.

Door prizes were won by: 1st -Allen Hoover, 2nd -- Chris Cowen, 3rd -- Amy Brown; they received money.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30 Youth Club meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. November 10, 1985 by Vice President Amy Kresta.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the members and a prayer was given

by Marcy Dorotik.

Our register was read and there were twenty - one members, plus six adults present.

Minutes were read by Kim. Dornak and Jean Dorotik gave the treasurer's report.

Fund - raising plans for this month included a booth at the District VI meeting.

We also would like to thank Miss Mary Mrnustik for donating to the youth club, from the kitchen proceeds, at the Vrazel's dance held in the Taiton Community Center.

Next month's social will be a Christmas Party at Taiton Community Center, December 22nd at 4 p.m.

The charity project for next month will be to donate for the renovation of the Statue of Liberty. Marcy Dorotik was appointed to make a poster for the adult Christmas Party asking for donations for this project.

Youth Club members enjoyed having Rice Krispers, cookies and punch for our social. They were served

by Mrs. Georgia Dorotik and Mrs. Patsy Korenek.

The District II Six Flags' trip was discussed. All of the people in our youth club who went reported having a good time.

Our social for the month is to go to Action World Bowl Center. Our youth leader will notify each youth member of the date and time.

We discussed the Design Contest for youth club members.

Our next meeting will be December 1st.

We would like to see all lodge members in ages 6 through 17 at this meeting. We need more active members in our youth Club.

JOSEPH MARTIN SKRABANEK, who, after a long illness, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 1985 at an Angleton nursing home at the age of 96.

Brother Skrabanek was born June 25, 1889 in Wesley, Texas and was one of five children born to Marie (Jancalek) and Joseph Skrabanek.

During World War I Brother Skrabanek was stationed at Ellington Field where he was a member of the military band. After the war he continued playing in local bands and later he and his lovely wife, the former Ara Caruth, whom he married January 15, 1929, played in the Houston Tamburash Band.

For many years Brother Skrabanek was employed as a sales representative for the Great Southern Life Assurance Company in Houston. While still employed he began farming rice in the Almeda and Danbury areas. After leaving Great Southern he began selling insurance for the SPJST while continuing to farm rice and raise cattle in the Danbury area. He was successful in several business ventures, being a partner in an Angleton lumber yard and the Airline Auto Supply in Houston. He installed the Danbury Water System and provided water for Danbury for many years until he sold the system. Always active in water and soil conservation endeavors, he was a director of Zone III of the Waters

Davis Soil and Water Conservation District for over 40 years. He was a member of the Brazoria County Farm Bureau and of the American Brahman Breeders Association.

Although Brother Skrabanek lived in Houston, he was a member of the Danbury School Board for many years and was a director of the First National Bank of Angleton for almost 40 years. He donated land for a city park to the town of Danbury, and Skrabanek Park is so named in his honor.

Brother Skrabanek served as secretary of Danbury Lodge 139 for a few years before being elected president in which capacity he served for 30 years. For 32 years he served as a District V director and was instrumental in the building of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville. Subsequently, he served as a director of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes for many years. He continued to sell insurance for the SPJST until well into his nineties.

Preceded in death by his wife, Ara, Brother Skrabanek is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m.

Friday, October 25, at the Palms Chapel of Roses in Angleton with the Rev. Carroll Grigsby officiating.

Graveside services were conducted by the Honeycutt - Chovanec American Legion Post No. 501 in the Danbury Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Earl Cameron, John Campbell, Al Conrad, S.T. Ferguson, Leerie Giese, Jimmy Holcomb and Wilford Peltier.

Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Martin's Catholic Church at Tours, Texas; Monsignor Frank Miller officiated. Burial was at St. Martin's Cemetery at Tours.

Brother Dulock was born August 17, 1929 at Tours, and resided in that area all his life.

He had been employed at General Tire & Rubber Company for the past 29 years.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4819. He was married to Shirley Holder, April 23, 1957 at Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joseph Dale Dulock of Northcrest, David Dulock of Tours; one daughter, Deborah Lynn Tekell of Tours; four sisters, Mrs. A. J. (Bernice) Kutscherousky of West, Mrs. George (Georgia) Wood of Houston, Mrs. John (Kay) Bivona of Tours and Mrs. W.J. (Jackie) Taylor of Northcrest, and two grandchildren.

Brother Dulock became a member of our SPJST in February 1972 and served his lodge faithfully for many years.

She was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church, the Sons of Hermann Lodge of Shelby, and the SPJST Lodge of Bleiblerville.

Funeral services were held October 31st at 11 a.m. at the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Rev. Albert Michalik officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery near Nelsonville.

Survivors include one daughter and son - in - law, Joyce and George Zapalac of Oak Hill; son and daughter - in - law, Kenneth and Edna Macat of Oak Hill; 3 sisters, Mrs. Hermina Shupak of Orchard, Mrs. Olga Sumrow of Louisiana and Mrs. Lydia Nakatis of Rosenberg; one brother, Johnnie Siptak, Sr. of Nelsonville.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Macat, March 17, 1985; two sons, Delmo and Sydney Macat; her parents; one sister, and 2 brothers.

Of Interest Consider Water Cost Of Thanksgiving Feast Imagine paying $426.74 for this year's Thanksgiving feast for a family of eight. And that's just for the cost of the water needed to produce that feast!

It takes a lot of water just to put food on the table, points out Dr. John Sweeten, agricultural engineer with the Texas AES, The Texas A&M System.

Agriculture uses about 47 percent of the water consumed in this country while industry uses another 43 percent.

As to the amount of water used to produce this year's Thanksgiving Day meal, Sweeten cites figures from the Freshwater Society, a water conservation organization, which estimated that 42,674 gallons are needed to produce the following: 20 lb. turkey -- 16,300 gallons Stuffing -- 6,004 gallons Potatoes -- 72 gallons Scalloped corn -- 1,824 gallons Green beans -- 1,000 gallons Carrots -- 1,000 gallons Waldorf salad -- 580 gallons Fresh fruit salad -- 2,000 gallons Bread -- 300 gallons Margarine (including cooking) 2,212 gallons Pumpkin pie -- 1,240 gallons Ice cream -- 1,142 gallons Milk (for 4) -- 1,000'gallons Wine (for 4) -- 8,000 gallons; a total of 42,674 gallons.

That amount of water would fill a 30 by 50 - foot swimming pool, notes Sweeten. And if consumers were charged just 1 cent a gallon, their Thanksgiving meal vramld cost $426.74.

We are a society highly dependent on water and we often take it for granted, emphasizes Sweeten. So this Thanksgiving, let's give thank's that this is a bountiful nation blessed with an abundance of natural resources such as water, but let's also think about the future and how we can help conserve these resources for generations to come.

Newsworthy Trends Working To Make Our Drinking Ever Water Safer Than America's water utilities are working on ways to provide better quality, safer drinking water for the country at reasonable cost.

The 1985 amendments to Safe Drinking Water Act were created to improve the quality of our nation's drinking water by emphasizing such areas as: Use of best treatment technol6gy Setting standards more quickly Filtration of surface water Disinfection of all drinking water Increased monitoring for contaminants Timely enforcement of regulations Protection against tampering with public water supplies Protection of underground sources of drinking water ' Encouraging passage of new amendments to protect the public safety is the American Water Works Association (AW WA), a 104 - year old non - profit, scientific and educational society that includes 3,000 water utilities that provide about 70 percent of America's drinking water.

The group is especially concerned with the slow regulatory process for setting nationwide drinking water standards, and has been pushing for? progress in the area.

AWWA has joined with the Federal government to sponsor more research emphasizing the development of technology and the application of improved techniques.

The group has developed an education program for school children that is being used in many communities across the nation.

Schools can order special workbooks, developed for different grade levels, with stories and activities about our drinking water.

The trend towards increasing recognition of the importance of our water supply is gaining ground throughout the nation's school system.

Thousands of high school students will debate US water policy during 1985 1986 school year, marking the first time water has ever been chosen as the national debate topic. AWWA has developed a bibliography of water related reference material to help students prepare for the debate.

Be Cautious With Freezer Meat 'Bargains' Well - advertised "bargains" on freezer meats may not save you any money, says a Texas A&M University AES specialist.

When buying meat in quantity for a freezer, price alone doesn't tell the story, say nutritionist Marilyn Haggard.

A 300 - pound carcass at 49 cents a pound will cost $147. But you can lose one - third of more in cutting and trimming. So the 200 pounds of meat actually cost 73 1/2 cents per pound, she says.

Many low - priced carcasses will give meat suited only for hamburger, stews and similar dishes, notes the specialist.

Steaks and roasts from them would be tough and disappointing.

Haggard explains that even in high quality carcasses, one - fourth of the meat can be expected to be steaks.

Another fourth will be roasts (most of them chuck), another fourth stew meat and hamburger. The remainder is loss in bone and fat.

The specialist encourages shoppers to look for a stamp shaped like a shield rolled in a log line down the length of the carcass. The stamp will say USDA Choice ' and indicate very good table quality.

Much of the meat sold at bargain prices is not choice, in spite of adverting claims, she adds.

Buying in large quantities can be convenient, but may not save you any money, observes Haggard. When you consider the loss in cutting and questionable meat quality of many bargain offers, you could do as well or better to simply shop at the sales in local markets.

Smart Sporting a Healthy Diet Year•- Round

By Nancy Clark, M.S., R.D., Consultant to Campbell's Soups There is a lesson to be learned from serious athletes that goes beyond sportsmanship or specific technique.Ti has to do with the way they eat.

There is no doubt that our eating habits can be either beneficial or counterproductive in terms of overall performance. And since everyone is different, each individual needs to tailor a nutritional plan to his or her needs and lifestyles.

But what is the best plan?

It is important to practice proper eating habits year - round. As the weather changes, so do our desires for different types of food, as well as our levels of activity. In the winter, for example, we tend to eat more and do less than we do in the summer. I think you should create a nutritional plan according to your own "calendar" of activity levels and desires.

The majority of my patients worry about what they eat. Some are serious athletes, but others are just "weekend" enthusiasts. Many claim they do not have time to eat right -- yet they want to know how to eat healthfully and how to cook simple, nutritious meals for themselves.

There are three keys to more healthful eating: eat a variety of foods each day; make food choices

wholesome select whole wheat instead of white bread, for example; and enjoy good food in moderation. It is important to evaluate your choices.

Choose equally convenient but more wholesome foods such as fruit or a cup of soup, t instead of mindlessly grabbing for a candy bar or doughnut.

By making wise choices, you can accumulate the nutrients you need for the entire day.

In addition to eating more healthfully, try to make exercise a part of your lifestyle. I try to build exercise into my day by riding my bike to work.

If I didn't, I might not make the time to exercise each day.

Successful Office Management Do you work in an office? Chances are you are using a word processor, terminal, or computer. To get the most out of the machine, follow this advice: People who wear glasses can use the new office equipment easily. But there are' things they should think about.

Make sure that you have a good prescription. Thirty percent of all office workers have vision problems that are improperly corrected.

If you wear bifocals, be sure your eye doctor knows that you use a word processor or terminal. Doctors often give patients prescriptions that let them do two tasks well, like driving and reading at a distance of about 13 inches. But your screen may be 18 to 20 inches away. If you have problems, don't put your body into peculiar positions in order to be able to read the screen. Instead, move your screen or use single - vision lenses adjusted to the distance you sit from your screen.

If you wear contacts, be sure you are blinking your eyes enough. Many people tend to slow their blink rate when they are concentrating on a close visual job like reading. That can allow your contacts to dry out. ***

How often do you adjust your chair during a day at the office when you are using a typewriter or visual display terminal? You would be surprised at how quickly simple adjustments can _make_you feel and work better.

Because people come in different shapes and sizes, you need a chair that adjusts in height, up and down, and that has a good back support.

To test for comfort, adjust your chair so that your thighs are parallel to the floor when your feet are placed flat on the floor. Sit back in the chair and not on the edge so that your back is supported.

Short people might want to try a footrest. They keep your feet from dangling and enable you to sit back in your chair.

Try placing your arms parallel to the floor so that the wrist is slightly higher than the elbow.

But remember, there is no "correct" sitting position. You may have been told to constantly sit up straight in your chair with a rigid back, but many people are uncomfortable in that position and prefer to lean back slightly.

The key is to find your own most comfortable posture. and to change that posture from time to time so that you can remain relaxed.

Health Hint Migraine According to various estimates, from five to ten percent of the pOpulation may have migraine headaches.

According to the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, a migraine headache usually starts on one side of the head, and, as a rule, remains one - sided. It may, however, change sides from one attack to another. The pain of a migraine can debilitate the sufferer to the point at which he or she can no longer function. There are two major types of migraine headache.

According to Dr. D. Graham, an osteopathic physician, "common" and "classic" migraine are differentiated by the presence or absence of symptoms prior to the onset of the headache. The most prevalent type of migraine is a common migraine. Common migraine does not have an obvious dramatic period before the headache starts. However, many people do have a vague, uneasy or irritable feeling.

Classic migraine is characterized by a ten to thirty minute warning period which signals the oncoming headache.

The victim may see flashing lights, zig zagging lines, or areas of total darkness. There may be tingling of the lips, face or hands; weakness or an arm or leg; loss of appetite, slight speech abnormality, confusion, restlessness, watery eyes and sweating.

The goal of migraine treatment today is prevention. Avoid the factors that prompt migraine. Make an effort to avoid stressful situations. If your headache occurs during the weekend, it may be related to late hours, overindulgence, or sleeping late. If so, you should maintain a more conservative and evenpaced schedule all week. Eating regularly and avoiding certain foods, such as ripened cheese and caffeine - containing drinks, also will aid in prevention.

Keep a detailed record of your attacks; note times, diet, odors, emotions, onset, duration, prevalence.

Some headache remedies are prophylactic and are used to prevent migraine headaches.

Other medication is used to abort the attack once it has begun. Always follow your physician's instructions and take your medication as directed.

Eat small snacks, more frequently -five or six times a day, rather than three heavy meals. It is healthier in general to eat smaller amounts more frequently.

Refuse second helpings.

1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup milk 3/4 cup Butter Flavor Crisco 1 1/4 cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla Combine flour and milk in small saucepan. Cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly. Heat to boiling; cook, stirring constantly, 5 to 8 minutes, or until very thick. Cool completely.

Combine Butter Flavor Crisco, sugar and vanilla in medium bowl. Add thickened mixture. Beat at highest speed of electric mixer about 5 minutes, or until smooth and creamy.

Spread between layers, around sides and on top of cooled cakes.

SANTA'S MAILBAG on KNCT-TV...Channel 46 (PBS) 4:30 p.m. each day ,?•

December is a special time for children, and TV 46 takes a special interest in children. Although excellent children's programs air year round, TV 46 gears up for a special program in December, "Santa's Mailbag".

Locally prodwed, Santa's Mailbag incorporates the events of the season into meaningful lessons. Santa reads letters from children in the TV 46 viewing area, gives tips on Christmas crafts and introduces a special friend who shares his Christmas memories.

Santa's Mailbag is thirty minutes in length and will air each weekday before Christmas, beginning December 16th at 4:30 p.m. A total of seven programs will be produced by KNCT staff and Telecommunications students.

This Holiday Season the SPJST is proud once again being a co-sponsor of Santa's Mailbag with Amos Electric and Supply of Temple. We know that viewers will thoroughly enjoy this type of family entertainment.
