Want To Be Successful?

A man is successful when he refuses to slander even his enemies; When he does not expect to get paid for everything he does; When he does not wait until tomorrow to do the things he might do today; When he is loyal to his employer and to his associates; When he intelligently cooperates with others, and is tolerant in thought and deed; When he studies constantly to prepare himself for a higher position financially and to rise in the estimation of his fellows. ***

This week you can see that the back page of our Vestnik features something for all of our youth members. We hope all of our youth will take part in this effort.

Once there was a powerful genius who promised a lovely maiden a gift of rare value if she would go through a field of corn and, without pausing, or wandering hither and thither, select the largest and ripest ear. The value of the gift was to be in proportion to the size and perfection of the ear.

The maiden passed by many magnificent ones, but was so eager to get the largest and most perfect that she kept on without plucking any until the ears she passed were successively smaller and more stunted. Finally they became so small that she was ashamed to select one, and not being permitted to go back, she came out at the other side without an ear of corn.

Those who are constantly wavering and hesitating in their decision will likely make no decision at all, or else make the wrong decision. Those who resolve but suffer their resolution to be changed by the first countersuggestion of a friend, who shift from opinion to opinion, from plan to plan, and veer like a weathercock to every point of the compass, with every wind that blows, will never accomplish anything worthwhile.

The editor must have a definite goal, guided by his convictions, fraternal duty, and obligations to our SPJST Society and its membership. He cannot be swayed by every breath of air, or breeze, like a spineless little twig. ***

No one would discount the value of the critic. The people who do things are too close to their own work to see it objectively. A good critic -- one who knows the standards that should be met -- can help doers perform better by pointing out wherein their work falls short. But not all critics are good critics, and too many are prone to criticize merely to express their own dissatisfaction with what has been done.

The real credit for accomplishment never belongs to the critics, even the

helpful ones. It belongs to those who do things. It is they who face the bruises of battle and give their time and energy to the tasks to be done. It is they who incur the blame for mistakes for it is they who make the mistakes.

Errors are the inevitable price of progress.

Even the best of critics may be able to point out what is wrong without being able to do it right themselves.

Most often it is those who have done things wrong who are best able to start over and do them right. It is they who have the enthusiasm for and the devotion to the job ahead. ***

Federal tax reform -- Things change so quickly in Washington, D.C. every new hour is a new experience and sometimes a new beginning.

At the time this material is being prepared for publication, the House Ways and Means Committee has not removed the $25 million threshold for fraternal benefit societies.

Congressman Ford is prepared to offer an amendment which would remove the threshold and reinstate full tax exemption.

October 17th, more than thirty - five fraternal benefit society leaders were in Washington, D.C. to attend a briefing called by President Reagan in the Old Executive Office Building. During the briefing, the President once again gave public support to retaining the tax exemption for fraternals.

Prior to the President's briefing, more than twenty fraternalists stormed the offices of the Ways and Means Committee members to voice their objections to the tax proposal. It was during a visit to Congressman Stark's office that our Washington Counsel learned that a new wrinkle was being suggested. John Jones of the Ways and Means staff is proposing to ask Congressman Stark to offer an amendment which would require all fraternal benefit societies to pay out five percent of their premium income annually for charitable and benevolent purposes in order to be tax exempt.

This proposal is, of course, unacceptable to the NFCA (National Fraternal Congress of America). ***

Under pressure to cut costs, the American Telephone & Telegraph Company is inviting 1.9 million shareholders with fewer than 100 shares to sell them on the open market.

AT&T points out that the transaction can be handled entirely by mail and won't incur the usual brokerage fee of $30 to $50. The price of AT&T stock has remained relatively stable at about $20 a share recently. Shareholders must decide whether to sell by December 17th. ***

An increasing number of consumer services, such as at - home banking, shopping and commodity reports, are becoming available over the telephone if you have touch - tone dialing. But many of the phones in people's homes do not have that capability, notes the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

To find out for certain what dialing system you have, check the last letter of the federally required indentification number on the phone's )ottom. If the letter is a T, the phone as tone dialing; if it is an R, the phon( aas rotary or pulse dialing; if it is an E, the phone can be used for pulse or tone dialing. ***

Campaign After a brief session, recess was taken at 2:20 p.m. to allow time for Lodge Pokrok Supreme Lodge sub - committees to Fayetteville meet. The Products Committee, the Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, Dallas Fraternal Activities Committee and the Financial Planning Committee did meet and each committee presented Lodge Cecho Moravan N informal recommendations and La Grange information on various matters during the meeting.

From The "lutes Of The 4th Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held Oct. 7-9 In Temple, Texas

SALE OF PROPERTY - Report was made on sale of foreclosed property in Magnolia, Texas. The sale was ratified on motion duly passed.

DIRECT BILL - Eleven lodges have now been placed on direct bill and a large number are on a waiting list.

FORECLOSURES/BANKRUPTCY Report was made on proposed foreclosures and bankrupties of borrowers in process.

DELINQUENT LOANS Recommendations on delinquent loans were considered and approved.

Special consideration was given to a delinquent lodge building loan. A report and financial statements of the lodge prepared by a representative of the Supreme Lodge were reviewed and discussed. An appropriate response was agreed upon.

Editor Rudy Sefcik arrived and visited the meeting and spoke briefly.

STATUE OF LIBERTY RESTORATION - It was agreed that lodges participating in the fund raising would receive recognition. Suggestion was made to Editor Sefcik to publish in, the Vestnik a barometer posting the amount of our goal of 10 cents per certificate that had been met. The report would also list an honor roll of lodges meeting their goal.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 a.m., October 9, 1985.

INVESTMENTS - The investments made during the quarter were ratified.

Minutes of all investment meetings were approved.

LOAN APPLICATIONS - After recommendation and discussion the following motion was adopted: 1. Mortgage loan policy - To :ontinue to consider acceptable loan applications under the current rules in force and to increase the mortgage loan interest rate to 11 1/2 percent. The interest rate on loans secured by commercial properties was set 1 percent above the owner - residence, owner - operated farm rate.

2. Annuity/Universal Life - The interest rate for the accumulation period on annuities and universal life was set at 10 percent for the period from 11 - 1 - 85 to 1 - 31 - 86.

IRS REPORTING - There was a general review of many new IRS reporting requirements affecting the Supreme Lodge and local lodges.

TEXANS OF CZECH ANCESTRY (TOCA) - The following Supreme Lodge members serve on TOCA Committees: President Leshikar - TOCA Coordinator Vice President Gebala - TOCA Music Coordinator Secretary/Treasurer Mikeska TOCA Communications and Publicity Officer.

DISCOUNTS ON "A" AND "B" CERTIFICATES - A motion was made that the usual discount of 25 percent on premiums be granted to all members in Class "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more, plus an additional 25 percent discount when they attain the age of 75. The question was put and unanimously adopted.

REFUND TO LODGES - After consultation with our actuary and discussion, a motion was adopted to set the rate of refund to lodges at 8 percent.

REFUND TO MEMBERS - It was agreed to defer action on the refund to

members to the January Supreme Lodge meeting at which time the year end financial statements would be available for review.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR SYD Sue Meadows presented her report.

A proposal to have the reigning King and Queen responsible for making at least three public appearances in Texas, two within the SPJST and one outside, was approved and modified to include an additional appearance at the Texas Fraternal Congress.

An expenditure for youth program brochures was authorized on motion passed.

NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS - The following Supreme Lodge members were recognized on their election to NFCA Committee positions: (1) Bernie Gebala on being elected president of the Fraternal Section.

(2) Jerry Mikulas on his election to the State Fraternal Congress Section Board.

(3) Sid Pokladnik on election to the Communications Section.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin at 9 a.m . January 6th and continue through the 9th of January.

Lodge 9 Snook Meeting The November meeting was called to order by President Richard Vajdak at 7:30 p.m.

All officers were present. The secretary read the minutes and they were approved.

We were honored to have Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar in attendance.

No old business was discussed.

The Christmas Party is planned for December 1, 1985. The schedule is as follows 2:00 -- Youth Club monthly meeting, decorate tree and make tree decorations 4:30 -- Lodge monthly meeting 5:30 -- Covered dish supper; each family is asked to bring enough for their family and a sweet 6:30 -- Youth will present a

A reminder to our members that you are urged to attend and participate in your local lodge meeting November 13, 1985 at 7 p.m. The SPJST is a fraternal organization, therefore, you should take part in the meeting, in electing your officers, and by your suggestions to help make Lodge 15 stronger and a better organization.

Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 would like to invite anyone interested in playing Tarocks to plan on coming to a once a - month Tarock Tournament. The nights will be November 15th, December 13, 1985 and January 17, 1986. The place is the Taylor SPJST Hall. The games will start at 7 p.m. or thereafter. The stopping time will be decided during the first night by those in attendance.

We will have an open - type of tournament so that players can form into table groups and play together as they wish. Each table may play according to the rules they normally play by.

At the end of each night's game, players' names and the amount of chips won or lost would be recorded.

Then in February a group of players would be selected to play in a championship tournament. Players would be selected for the championship tournament by averaging the number of chips won and lost on each of the nights a player participates. Players with the highest average winning would be selected.

Players must attend at last 2 of the 3 nights.

There will be prizes for the top four players each night. A trophy will be given to the winner of the tournament.

Lodge 47 Elects Officers

The November 3rd meeting of Lodge 47 was called to order by President Jerry Pechal at 2 p.m.

Flagbearers Tracy Klusacek and Hedi Schroeder presented the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was held in memory of our deceased members, Brother Walter Jakubec and Brother Clarence Jecmenek. May their souls rest in eternal peace.

Brother Pechal welcomed visitors Ann Balusek, Albert Koslovsky and Lonnie, Augusta and Freddie Schroeder; glad to have you join our fellowship.

Roll call showed all officers present, eleven sales representatives present and six absent.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved after a few minor corrections.

Sister Ann Koon read the following correspondence: A letter from the Easter Seal Society A card of appreciation from the Clarence Jecmenek family A letter from the Supreme Lodge about the renovation of the Statue of Liberty A letter from SL President Howard Leshikar acknowledging our donation :o the Disabled Veterans A thank you note from the Supreme Lodge on participation in the Domino Tournament and congratulations to Dan Hejl and Joe Kohut, 3rd place winners in "42" A letter from the City Animal Shelter in Temple for donation The membership acted on the request and voted to send $204.20 to the Statue of Liberty renovation.

New members are Zana J. Burch, David Olin Burch, Timothy W. Reese, Marshall A. Voigt, Mathew Williamson and Bobby Joe Poff, Jr. One transfer in, George William Pavelka, Jr. We welcome all of you to come and participate in our meetings and meet fellow members.

Members on the sick list are Jerry Trampota, Daniel Mares and John Thomas. Get well soon!

Officers' reports were satisfactory.

Brother Pechal reported that he needed a kitchen chairman for December and that the shingles were delivered and the new roof is to be put on this week, weather permitting.

Henry Mares gave the treasurer's report and Financial Secretary Adeline Kohutek gave her report and read the minutes of the Board meeting.

All chairpersons gave good reports.

Youth Leader Rosie Craft gave the youth report. There were thirteen members and seven guests.

The New Year's Eve dance tickets for this year will be $7.50 in advance and $8.50 at the door. Jerry Heisler and the Melody Five will play for the dance.

Frank Klinkovsky gave a report on the youth trip to Six Flags.

Next on the list was the election of officers. Meeting, Lodge 66, Linden Hall October

Our president called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. Flags were presented by Chris Owen and Larry Yates. Michelle Shelton led all present in the pledge.

Mrs. Vinnie Johnson was a visitor at our meeting. Come visit with us again real soon.

All officers were present accept our Youth Leader Kay Owen. The minutes of our last meeting were read and approved.

A moment of silent prayer was observed for our departed Brother, Edwin Beseda.

Correspondence was read from the Beseda family, and SL President Leshikar.

Brother Shilling gave the report on the Board meeting held.

The youth report was given by Assistant Karen Shelton. There were 12 members present. Shane Pruitt brought the birthday cake.

Sister Parma gave her report on the Trust Fund. She, in turn, received a check from the lodge; also a check from the collection of cans that was sold.

Entertainment Committee chairman reported on the menu planned for the District III fall meeting. She also stated that they will have popcorn for the November meeting due to election.

It was also voted on to allow the committee more money for this year's Christmas Party at which turkey will be served.

At this time President Orsag made the comment that he would like to see a good turnout of our members at the District III meeting.

Sister Jeanette Smith of the Fraternal Committee then read thank you notes from the following: Katherine York and children Dixie Leathers Linda Steinhouser and family Linda Olson She also read a list of items that had been purchased for, the Child Abuse Center. Sister Jeanette then thanked everyone who brought something for the York family whose home was destroyed by fire. She made her recommendations for October and they were that: Katherine York, Dixie Leathers, Ruth Oswald and Louie Rich each receive $50; also the McLennan County Co - op School and the Coronary Heart Unit each receive $100. The members approved that the above receive what was mentioned.

The Cheer Committee sent a get well card to Brother Jim Locke. Sympathy cards were sent to the Bill Norses, Joe Pruitt, Leo Klimitchek and the Edwin Beseda family.

Brother Miller gave the 3rd quarterly financial report. All was in order.

New members accepted were Timothy W. Snow, Michelle A. Ender, Derrick C. Head, Randall G. Fagle and Opal F. Zahirniak. New transfers accepted were Candace, Debra, Christopher, Matthew and James Pavlicek from Lodge 54, West and Wayne Dempsey from Lodge 35, Elk. Resolution of sympathy was read for our deceased member, Edwin Beseda.

Brother George Pauling expressed his appreciation once again for everyone's help and cooperation during the Domino Tournament.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt then presented the winners from our lodge with their awards.

President Orsag encouraged everyone to come out and visit on social nights. He also thanked everyone who came for coming to help clean and wax floors.

Brother Smith came forward and recognized all insurance salesmen present. He made a few Comments on some insurance and the selling of it by the salesmen. Brother Smith also reported on some bumper stickers that proclaim "Texans of Czech Ancestry."

Our door prize winner was Bertha Newmann.

Members with birthdays in October were Otto Hanus, Rose Geller, Cory Pruitt and Shane Pruitt. Hope everyone enjoyed their birthdays.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Our October meeting was called to order by President Louis Grochoske and he also led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

All remained standing in respect to our deceased members and friends The minutes were accepted as read.

The Nominating Committee was appointed for this year's election of new officers. The election will be in December.

Also a reminder to all our members about our Christmas Party of four lodges to be held this year Sunday, December 8,at Lodge 183 in Arlington.

All the ladies are asked to bring their favorite dessert. All of you who attended the last three years know how much fun the parties can be.

A few of the Lodge 180 members also enjoyed a bus trip to Temple, Texas to the SPJST Museum with the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. It was a very enjoyable trip and the museum was interesting; it brought back memories of the days we spent on the farm.

My husband and I have just returned from a 2 - week trip to Charlottesville, Virginia to visit our Dr. Raymond Dueser and his wife, Joan. We had a wonderful time and the foliage was beautiful.

Please remember our next meeting Tuesday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m.; also remember our dances every Saturday night.

Temple, Texas Oreetings!

I thought it would be appropriate to let those of you who are interested know that we are well and just a little bit about ourselves. The adjustment to a new pace has been challenging, to say the least, and understandably so, after having done something for 20 years.

First, we are told that some of you have been interested in contacting me, either by mail or telephone. We live at the same address as in years past, and it is given at the end of this letter.

Secondly, we wanted those of you, particularly in the Temple - Bell County area, know that our son, Josef, has returned to work after being involved in a serious motorcycle vehicle accident. He suffered multiple injuries and lacerations, including a broken leg. He's lucky to have come through it as well as he did because it could have been worse, even fatal. We thank those who called to inquire, visited Joe in the hospital, and have followed up with subsequent visits and calls during his recuperative period at home. We thank the Good Lord for sparing his life. Those of you who have been through an accident like this know that when the emergency room of a hospital calls at 3:30 in the morning that they're not calling you to tell you "good morning" or to come down for tea and cookies. Joe is not any too eager to get on a motorcycle again.

I would like to urge those of you who have not yet done so to order your copy of the SPJST History from the Supreme Lodge. I am proud to have compiled the information and that this work finally emerged in published form after so many years of discussion and several attempts. I enjoyed the project immensely. I'd also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the devoted services of my secretary at that time, Mrs. Sarah Wilson, who typed every word contained in the book.

Thank you and bless you, Sarah! I was privileged and honored to autograph a number of copies on request and will still do so.

I regret that I have been unable tc accept the invitations to .variow functions at your lodges, and also that I was unable, due to conflicts, to officiate at funerals. Please feel free to contact me in this regard and I'll see ii I can oblige. In reading the Vestnil( every week, I have seen the names of many familiar and good people, whom we held in such high esteem over so many years, and it saddens me to read of their passing among the Resolutions of Sympathy. This is something that i! ordained by God and over which wt have little control.

In conclusion, my family and I express our every good wish for the coming Holiday Season. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and then comes Christmas. 5.P.J.S.T. Rest home No. II Corner Thelma Hiller, Gladys Hix and Kate Davis are the new residents to join our group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Hone No. II for the month of October. We have also added new members to our staff; namely, Sally Wleczyk (NA), Raquel Diaz (GPN), Alma Torres (NA), Betty Ann Hipp (INN), and Willie Schooler (NA).

We regret the loss of Sally McCauley. Sally will be missed by our staff and other residents. A table with a carnation in a vase was set up for a memorial in her memory.

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond is Ella Bacica.

The senior citizen luncheons given at the Immanuel United Church of Christ and St. Michael's Catholic Church were attended by Tony Ondracek, Martha Stuchly, Hilda Cole, Annie Stavinoha and Virgie Richardson. The senior citizen social held at the United Methodist Church was attended and enjoyed by Louise Janc, Tony Ondracek, Agnes Perkins, Thelma Hiller, Emma Tielke, Annie Stavinoha and Martha Wleczyk.

The KCs came to play bingo Tuesday evening, October 8th and 22nd, with the residents. The residents reported a fine time.

Tuesday morning, October 22nd, residents Tony Ondracek, Annie Stavinoha, Virgie Richardson, Hilda Cole, Martha Stuchly, Mary Ann Spezia and AnnaBelle Schoppe; Paul Legendre and Aurrora Longoria (volunteers), and Martha Marx (SAD) went to tour New Gulf Chemical Company and then to Clay Richardson's Ranch.

Wednesday afternoon, October 23rd, Elverna Graeber entertained her mother, Marie Bertram with a Birthday Party. A few friends and relatives attended.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of October are residents Janie Dvorak, Minnie Graeber, Moody Flagg, Marie Bertram and Martha Stuchly, also staff members Grace Loesch, Cora C. Foston, Alma Torres and Betty Ann Hipp.

The Birthday Party which was held October 25, included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to favorite music. The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided corsages. The St. Paul's Presbyterian ladies provided cakes.

Lydia Hortmon, also brought a cake Volunteers Melva Hastings, Bertha Ross, Lydia Hortmon and Frances Muzny served coffee, punch, cake and ice cream to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

A special treat of coffee and donuts were served to the residents Tuesday morning, October 29th.

Thursday, October 31st, everyone enjoyed Halloween Day. In the morning, the residents and staff had a Halloween Party which included The Good Beginning Day Care children dressed in their costumes and sang, also visited our residents. The staff and some of our residents were dressed in Halloween costumes. Administrator Harvey Marx, Margie Hall (FSS) and Mary Ann Leeper (D.O.N.) were judges. Residents receiving gifts were Mary Ann Spezia, George Jones, Betty Wruck, Emma Tielke, Annie Walcik and Janie Dvorak. Staff members Linda Cloud (being an old witch) won first prize, Kim Wilson (an old man) -2nd prize, Melissa Leger (a cat) -- 3rd prize, Theresa Garrett (a pink rocker) -- 4th prize. Martha Marx, Elsie Mahlmann and The Good Beginning

Day Care brought cake and cookies.

Elsie Mahlmann, volunteer, helped serve coffee, punch, cake and cookies to all.

In the afternoon, Lil's Day Care children came dressed in Halloween costumes and sang and visited residents, then in the evening, the Baptist Church children and several

SVPS Mutual Insurance To Meet Dear Members: Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Chapter No. 9 will have a meeting November 17 at 2 p.m. It will be held at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cutoff Road.

There will be the usual order of business, the reports of the officers and committees since the last meeting.

This is an important meeting; there will be election of officers for the coming year. We would like to see all

other groups came to visit.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches in the area that give services and communion, and to the volunteers who do services in the home to our residents for the month of October.

KNCT TV 46 takes a special interest in children year round and December is especially a great month for TV 46's younger viewers.

Telecommunications students and TV 46 staff spend many hours producing a local Christmas program called, "Santa's Mailbag." In each program Santa will read letters from children around Central Texas. Also, aspects of the true meaning of giving will be featured. The program will be broadcast weekdays at 4:30 p.m. beginning December 16th.

If you have a youngster, they can send their letter to Santa at KNCT, U.S. Hwy. 190 West, Killeen, Texas 76542. Letters must be received at the KNCT studios by November 20th, so Santa can read them on the air.

Lodge 39, Bryan YC Helps Needy Ones Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge 39 had a craft and bake sale in Post Oak Mall in College Station, October 18th and 19th. We were very lucky to get so many things donated by the parents of our youth and by other members of the mother lodge. To them we would like to say thank you; you helped make this a big success. By the end of the second day we hardly had anything left. This was our biggest fund - raiser we have throughout the year.

Now it is time to start thinking of somethings we should be thankful for during this Thanksgiving season and what we can do to help others.

We are collecting food for a food basket for the needy so speaking to other youth lodges, we are looking for a challenge to see if anyone else can make this their project. Good luck!

Lodge 39, Bryan YC Stays Busy Dear Members, Our club has been very busy in October. October 18 and 19 we had a booth at the Post Oak Mall. This is a good fund - raiser for our club since everything is donated.

October 27 we had a Halloween Carnival at our lodge home between 3 and 5 p.m. We invited other lodges in our district and several came. We all had a good time playing games.

Awards were given for the best costumes. Thanks, Renea Macik and Linda Faust, plus all the adults who made this carnival happen.

I hope to see everyone at our next meeting.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 89, Rosebud, Texas, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother FRANK J. SEBEK, age 77, of 921 E. Central, Temple, Texas, who passed away Wednesday, October 30, 1985 at a Temple hospital.

Services for Brother Sebek were held Friday, November 1st at Harper Talasek Funeral Home with Rev. Don Vlasek officiating. Burial was at Bellwood Memorial Park.

Brother Sebek was born near Rosebud, Texas, November 8, 1907.

He was a longtime member of Lodge 89. For the past 40 years he was a resident of Temple and was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Helen (Goldman) Sebek of Temple; one daughter, Gloria Marek of Garland; one son, Larry Sebek of Austin; four brothers, Joe Sebek of Red Ranger, Bill Sebek of New Colony, Daniel Sebek of Temple and Ed Sebek of College Station; four sisters, Libbie Ledgars of Austin, Lydia Surovik of Rockdale, Alice Barr of Austin and Helen Tome of Temple; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Features Czechs Gear Up For 1986 The association, Texane Ceskeho Puvodu or Texans of Czech Ancestry ITOCAI, is setting the stage for a series of activities for the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial year. The group announced some of its ambitious plans which should make 1986 a year that will be long remembered in Czech communities throughout Texas.

One idea that is gaining interest is that of changing the Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas into a three - day affair. The first day would be devoted to history - genealogy, the second would emphasize Czech music and the third would honor prominent Czechs over the past one hundred thirty - four years in Texas. This proposal is soon to be considered by the State Fair Czech Day Committee.

All the various Czech festivals and Czech events being held annually throughout Czech - populated communities in Texas are being encouraged to adopt Sesquicentennial themes and to use the theme word "Sesquicentennial" in their names.

The annual "barbecues" held at various halls and lodges will be encouraged to spice up their festivities by including the "Sesquicentennial" as their theme.

Two or more "Czech Sesquicentennial Symposiums" will be held in the State of Texas during 1986.

The Czechs have held symposiums in the past and these events have drawn large numbers seeking to learn more about their culture. The symposiums provide Czech Texans the opportunity to learn and share some of the customs and traditions_of their ancestry.

Efforts will be made to have historical markers placed at sites involving Czech Texas history.

Examples are homes or graves of Czech individuals prominent in our Texas history and the locations of events important to the history of Texas, including church and school sites.

Persons throughout the state will be encouraged and assisted in the preparation and publication of Czech family histories or histories of the Czech people in Texas. Every community where there has been a preponderance of Czech families in the last one hundred thirty - four years will be encouraged and assisted in preparing booklets or books on the history of places, persons and events.

Plans are also being pursued to have the 1936 album of autobiographies of prominent Czechs updated to include persons prominent in the last fifty years and reprinted as a new volume or volumes. Old books concerning the history of the Czechs in Texas will be reprinted and made available for sale to the public.

Cemeteries throughout the State of Texas where persons of Czech ancestry are buried will be inventoried before June 1, 1986 and data published in volumes as necessary.

A Czech Sesquicentennial register is planned. Every person of Czech ancestry will be requested to submit an

eighty - word resume on his/her ancestors in Texas before 1900 for inclusion in a comprehensive Czech Sesquicentennial Pioneer Register.

Congregations which were or are predominantly of Czech ancestry will prepare a history of their churth and congregation for inclusion in a volume of the history of Czech churches in Texas.

Communities which are predominantly of Czech ancestry, where there was a pioneer school, will research and write a history of their particular "Czech" school for inclusion in a volume covering Czech schools in Texas.

Czech families who were in the State of Texas before the year 1886 (or descendants thereof) will be eligible to be awarded Pioneer Texas Czech Family Certificates upon presentation of a completed application form to be provided and a nominal registry fee of five dollars ($5). Proof of residence in Texas before 1886 in the form of a Census entry, declaration of intention or other valid documents will qualify one for the certificate. Persons desirous of being awarded a Pioneer Texas Czech Certificate need to request the application form and guidelines for this project.

Prepares For Sesquicentennial Year West

The Sesquicentennial Committee of West, Texas was sanctioned by the Texas Commission in April 1984. The master plan includes many activities to be co - sponsored with the West fest Association and presented during the Westfest weekend in August 1986.

The major project, however, of the West Sesquicentennial Committee is the establishment of a Library Museum facility for the citizens of West. There are many pioneer families in the community who possess articles of historical significance, and they should have an appropriate facility in which to display and share these articles' with all the people. A public museum is an ideal place for such a purpose. To obtain some working capital for this project, the West Sesquicentennial Committee is selling the West Heritage Cookbook, a collection of more than 700 recipes submitted by 200 plus contributors.

Many of these recipes are traditional Czech family recipes passed down from generation to generation. The cookbook is an ideal gift for weddings, birthdays, and the Christmas season.

Items Of Interest Ten Warning Signs Of Child Abuse Each year more than one million Child Abuse cases are brought to the attention of authorities by family members, neighbors, schoolteachers, but rarely by the children themselves.

They are afraid to tell, often ashamed or embarrassed, or perhaps afraid the whole thing is their fault in the first place.

So the great majority of abuse cases go unreported. Left untreated, the tragedy of abuse is often repeated by these same children when they themselves reach adulthood. It's up to each and every one of us to shoulder the responsibility these poor children have borne alone -- to keep a watchful eye on not just our own children, but those of our friends and neighbors.

You must speak up, so if abuse is uncovered, the proper steps can be taken to stop it.

There are ten signs that serve as a guide to spotting a troubled child: 1. An abused child usually displays welts or other surface skin injuries.

2. He or she may exhibit extreme behaviors: is unusually aggressive, or destructive; is unusually passive, or withdrawn; may cry excessively; may show little or no response to pain if njtfred.

3. An abused child may seem much older, more adult -- or exactly the opposite.

4. He or she may seem unusually afraid of parental or authoritative figures.

5. An abused child may appear listless, tired, dull.

6. He or she may be habitually late or absent from classes -- or may come early and stay late, reluctant to go home.

7. Physical and/or mental growth may seem slow, perhaps severely so.

8.

Unwashed or unclean appearance, clothing inappropriate for the weather.

9. Continued nightmares and/or bedwetting.

10. Frequent vandalism, sexual misconduct or precociousness, use of alcohol/drugs.

If you suspect a child is being abused -- mentally, physically or emotionally -- alert your local Department of Social Services. They will investigate the child's home situation and determine what action needs to be taken. And they can refer the family for counseling to such organizations as an Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse.

Spotlight On Health High Blood Pressure: What You Should Know.

Medical progress in treating high blood pressure is of interest to the more than 60 million Americans who suffer from this disease.

According to the American Heart Association, high blood pressure, or hypertension, often goes undetected because there are no apparent symptoms. In some cases, however,

the condition causes headaches, dizziness or tiredness. Since these symptoms could also signify other illness, a doctor should be consulted to determine if high blood pressure is present.

Doctors have many ways to treat high blood pressure. One is by lowering the force and rate of the heartbeat. This is accomplished by the use of beta - blocker prescription drugs. The newest drug of this type is Sectral acebutolol. It is described in reports from medical authorities as causing minimal reduction in the resting heart rate, and also allowing a better response to exercise.

Sectral also produces a relatively low incidence of fatigue, impotence and cold hands and feet as compared with other such drugs. This makes it easier for physicians to control high blood pressure while permitting their patients to maintain an active lifestyle.

High blood pressure can pose a serious medical problem, making arterial walls hard and thick. The condition results in the removal of the "stretchability" that is important to arteries, causing the heart to work harder to pump enough blood. In time, this causes the heart to grow larger, leading to heart disease. High blood pressure can also cause strokes.

So even if no apparent symptoms exist, an occasional blood pressure check is in order.

The chief symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, the most serious form of the disease, are general fatigue, soreness, stiffness and aching followed by gradual appearance of localized symptoms in a joint or in several joints consisting of pain, swelling, warmth and tenderness. ***

Leading rheumatologists say there are several major differences between analgesic rubs which could affect how well they work for the consumer. It is important to distinguish between products that work by creating warmth which masks the pain, while others are designed to penetrate deep into the painful muscles and joints and work without heat or odor. Spotlight On Nutrition What Makes Us Grow Old? What causes us to grow old? What makes our human machinery break down? More importantly, what can we do to delay that process? Can such thing as vitamin E supplements really help?

We're learning that a "normal" life span actually may be greater than 100 years, even though life expectancy in the U.S. now fails some 30 years of that.

ResearcIrtfa-s-ghown that some aging processes are hereditary and others involve special aging mechanisms within certain body organs. We can't change those factors. But, there are other things happening to the cells in our bodies that can and need to be controlled.

Our bodies consist of trillions of cells. New ones are created and old ones die every second. When we are young, more cells are created than die, and we grow. Somewhere during our twenties, we reach a balance in the cellular life and death cycle. Then, during our thirties, the scale begins to tip, and more cells die than are

created; we begin the aging process.

While some cells just grow old, many others are damaged by very powerful chemical substances called free radicals which naturally occur in our bodies or are the result of pollutants we consume from air, water or food.

Some free radicals, when under control, are part of essential life processes. But, frequently they go out of control. They crash around inside cells, attacking other vital cell components. This can weaken or even kill cells, contributing to the aging process.

Facts From The Food And Drug Administration Warning: Some Cordless Phones May Hurt Your Hearing Could your cordless phone be hazardous to your health? The answer is yes. Hearing damage can result from certain models of cordless phones that have the ringing mechanism located in the ear piece.

If you have such a phone, and forget to set a switch to the "Conversation" mode before you answer it, the next ring can go off directly into your ear.

To prevent the possibility of hearing damage, major phone manufacturers have agreed to redesign current models, relocating the ringing mechanism to the mouthpiece or back of the handset.

With regard to older versions that many consumers have already purchased, some manufacturers have agreed to modify those phones.

Consumers are advised to check with their specific phone manufacturer for information regarding any modification work they may offer. For those phones not modified, the following precautions should be taken: Never place the phone against your ear unless you have switched from the "standby" to the "talk" or "conversation" position.

Integrated Pest Management Now Forecasts Casebearer

By Robert L. Haney TAES Science Writer Producers of Texans' favorite tree nut, the pecan, have an improved integrated pest management system that will warn them when the pecan nut casebearer reaches levels that endanger the nut crop.

The pecan nut casebearer is the :lumber one insect threat to the Texas pecan crop which is worth 50 to 120 million dollars each year, according to Dr. Marvin Harris who heads the Pecan Entomology Research Team in the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES).

Past research by this TAES Team has resulted in a computer model that predicts when pecan nut casebearer larvae will begin to destroy significant numbers of pecan nutlets if the larvae are present. the Texas with Personnel Agricultural Extension Service (TAEX) have made this prediction model part of their pecan integrated pest management program for Texas, in cooperation with TAES personnel, Harris says.

The predictions have been made for orchards and groves throughout Texas for the past several years and have been instrumental in ensuring that insecticidal treatments were applied at the correct time.

"However, the model in its present form," Harris says, "only predicts when a treatment may be needed and does not indicate if a treatment is needed.

"The objective of this part of the work will be to provide reliable guidelines as to whether or not treatment is necessary. We want to treat with insecticide for pecan nut casebearer only if the crop is threatened; and then we want to make a single, well - timed treatment that results in greatest control and least disruption of natural enemies and the environment.

"Further, we want to avoid treatments altogether if pecan nut casebearer populations are too low to cause economic damage.

"We know from experience that insecticide treatments kill the natural enemies (predators and parasites) of pest insects and that resurgences of the target pest or outbreaks of other kinds of pests often occur following treatment. Pecan aphid outbreaks are a typical example of the latter."

The pecan nut casebearer overwinters as a small larva at the base of a pecan bud, Harris says. The bud begins to grow in the spring and the larva grows and develops by feeding on and tunneling into the new foliage.

After a few weeks, the larvae pupate and 10 to 14 days later adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs on the small developing pecan nutlets.

Larvae hatch from the eggs and feed on the small nuts, destroying them.

Infestations can destroy up to 100 percent of the crop, although in some years, pecan nut casebearer numbers are quite low in relation to nut supply, and economically important damage does not occur.

"Research with pecan insects," Harris says, "has emphasized the judicious use of all management measures for control and the present status of pecan nut casebearer is that one well - timed insecticide treatment is usually sufficient.

"The successful completion of these new studies on pecan nut casebearer will provide a sound basis for eliminating the use of insecticide in some seasons without risk from pecan nut casebearer.

"As I said earlier, we want to control this pest, when it reaches economically damaging levels, with a minimum effective amount of insecticide in order to maximize nut yields and producer • profits, with minimum effect on the environment," Harris concluded.

College Station -- The "fresh approach" is the in - thing again this year. Fresh vegetables are plentiful in Texas now, so make sure you get your share.

Ask for fruits and vegetables grown in Texas, suggests Tom Longbrake, iorticulturist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The TAMU System. You will be supporting Texans who earn their livelihood from growing your groceries.

Texas supplies broccoli, cabbage, carrots, spinach, lettuce and potatoes in early spring followed by cantaloupes, cucumbers, honeydews, squash, peppers and tomatoes.

Blackberries, plums and early peaches will be available in late May and June along with watermelons, blackeyed peas and okra.

Buying vegetables direct from growers at 'you - pick' operations and roadside markets is increasing in Texas, notes Longbrake.

Cost savings can be passed on to consumers by farm markets who sell locally grown produce through reduced costs in transportation, packaging and refrigeration.

Tomatoes are the most popular vegetable bought at roadside markets followed by watermelons, peaches, blackeyed peas, okra, squash, new potatoes and green beans, says the horticulturist.

If you are in the cost - cutting mood, consider buying fresh produce by the bushel for canning or freezing at home, suggests Longbrake.

So, 'get fresh" with Texas produce.

Local radio and newspaper ads can tell you where fresh produce is available.

TOMATO FLOWERS 1 medium or 1 cup potato, peeled and quartered 2 Tablespoons water 24 (1 pint) cherry tomatoes 1 cup finely chopped ham 2 Tablespoons finely chopped dill pickle 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise or salad dressing 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard 'A teaspoon salt Dash Pepper Parsley Place potato in 1 - quart glass casserole; add water. Cover with casserole lid. Microwave (high) 5 to 6 minutes or until potato is tender, stirring once. Drain and cool. Remove stem from each tomato. Place tomatoes stem - side - down. Make two crosscuts almost through tomatoes.

Gently pull apart to form center space for filling. Arrange on serving tray.

Finely chop potato. Add remaining ingredients except parsley; mix well.

Spoon about a teaspoon of potato mixture into each tomato. Sprinkle with parsley. Refrigerate until served.

EGGPLANT BAKE 1 medium eggplant 1/2 lb. ground beef 1 small onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 unpeeled cucumber, chopped 1/2 green pepper, chopped 1 can (8 oz.) tomato sauce '/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/4 teaspoon basil leaves 'A teaspoon pepper 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese Cut eggplant in half lengthwise.

Soak in salt water* about 30 minutes.

Crumble ground beef into 1 1/2 - quart glass casserole. Microwave (high) uncovered, 2 to 3 minutes or until meat is set, stirring once. Stir to break meat into small pieces; drain. Drain eggplant and scoop out center leaving a '/4 inch shell. Chop center of eggplant and reserve 1 1/2 cups.

Combine 1 1/2 cups chopped eggplant, onion, garlic, cucumber and green pepper in 4 - cup glass measure. Cover with plastic wrap. Microwave (high) 4 to 5 minutes or until almost tender; drain. Stir into ground beef. Add tomato sauce, salt, Italian seasoning, basil and pepper; mix well. Spoon into eggplant halves, mounding as necessary. Place in 8 - inch square glass baking dish. Cover with waxed paper.

Microwave (high) 7 to 8 minutes or until eggplant is tender, rotating once.

Sprinkle with cheese. Microwave (high) uncovered, 1/2 to 1 minute or until cheese is melted. Using two spatulas, gently lift eggplant onto serving plate. *Add 1 Tablespoon salt to 2 quarts water for salt water in which to soak eggplant.

ZUCCHINI POCKETS 3 cups sliced, unpeeled zucchini 1 small onion, sliced 1 clove garlic, minced 1 Tablespoon butter or margarine 'A teaspoon basil leaves 'A teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1 tomato, chopped 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese 1 pkg. (3 oz.) cream cheese 3 pocket bread rounds (6 inch size) 1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese Combine zucchini, onion, garlic, butter, basil and salt in 1 quart glass casserole. Cover with casserole lid.

Microwave (high) 5 to 6 minutes or until tender - crisp, stirring once. Stir in cornstarch. Microwave (high) uncovered, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until mixture boils, stirring once. Mix in tomato and Parmesan Cheese. Set aside. Microwave (high) cream cheese in small glass dish 1/2 to 3 I/4 minutes or until softened. Cut pocket bread rounds vertically to form 6 pockets.

Spread inside of each pocket with cheese. Spoon zucchini mixture into each pocket. Top zucchini with Mozzarella cheese. Arrange on glass serving plate. Microwave (high) uncovered, 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until cheese is melted and pockets are heated.

DRYING PARSLEY Do you have some parsley in your garden or some you have bought that you do not want to let deteriorate in the refrigerator? Dry it in the microwave.

Wash and pat dry desired quantity of fresh parsley. Remove leaves from ;terns and measure leaves to determine aiming.

Cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside of oven or use a paperboard tray.

Cover with two layers of paper toweling. Sprinkle parsley evenly onto toweling.

Microwave (high) until parsley is dried and brittle: 2 cups - 5 1/2 to 6 minutes 3 cups - 7 1/2 to 8 minutes 5 cups - 10 to 11 minutes Cool. Crush to desired fineness; store in air - tight containers.

Heat Illness Risk Higher For Children College Station -- During summer weather children playing outside, run the risk of heat exhaustion.

Children run a higher risk for several reasons, says Dr. Mary Ann Heussner, a health education specialist with the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service. '41 Children are prone to heat illnesses because they have more skin surface

for each pound they weigh than adults so they absorb more heat, she says.

Because children's sweat glands do not work as well as adults until after puberty, their bodies do not regulate temperature as well either. Children also take almost twice as long as adults to get accustomed to different temperatures, explains the specialist.

When children get involved in playing, they may ignore thirst, become overheated, fatigued and dizzy.

To avoid problems with heat illnesses, Heussner recommends that :hildren, and active adults, follow hese guidelines: *Drink at least eight cups of plain water each day. *Drink at least half a cup of cool water every 15 minutes during the activity. The body absorbs cool water faster than warm. *Weigh before and after the activity.

Drink two cups of water for every pound lost during the activity. *Drink water, since it is absorbed faster than electrolyte drinks, sodas and juices. *Avoid salt tablets.

Gustav Mahler a teskoslovensko "...Mahler byi nejve gi synthetik dne§ni hudby, synthetik iivota i umeni..."

Zdenek NejedIST, 1911 Osm kilometrfi od jihaeskeho mesta Humpolce 'elf maid obec Kalig te. V polovine minuleho stoleti zde lije kolem pal set obyvatel eeske narodnosti. Bydli tu vlak i rodina drobneho iidovskeho obchodnika a majitele male vinopalny Bernarda Mahlera. A prave v ni se 7. eervence 1860 narodil budouci slavO skladatel..

V zime 1860 se tato rodina stehuje do nedaleke Jihlavy, tehdy po Brnu nejvetgiho morayskeho mesta, a intenzivni kontakt Gustava Mahlera s ees14m prostfedim pokraeuje. SANTA'S MAILBAG on KNCT-TV...Channel 46 (PBS) 4:30 p.m. each day December is a special time for children, and TV 46 takes a special interest in children. Although excellent children's programs air year round, TV 46 gears up for a special program in December, "Santa's Mailbag".

Locally produced, Santa's Mailbag incorporates the events of the season into meaningful lessons. Santa reads letters from children in the TV 46 viewing area, gives tips on Christmas crafts and introduces a special friend who shares his Christmas memories.

Santa's Mailbag is thirty minutes in length and will air each weekday before Christmas, beginning December 16th at 4:30 p.m. A total of seven programs will be produced by KNCT staff and Telecommunications students.

This Holiday Season the SPJST is proud once again being a co-sponsor of Santa's Mailbag with Amos Electric and Supply of Temple. We know that viewers will thoroughly enjoy this type of family entertainment.
