On October 12 an enthusiastic crowd gathered at Lodge 15, Buckholts for the 1985 SPJST "42" Domino Tournament.

All participants and guests were treated to a day full of friendly a competition, socializing and delicious home cooked meal provided

by Lodge 15.

As always in any contest there are only a few winners, but in this case we feel that all who participated were winners. 1st place was won by Lodge 65, Crosby, represented by Jerry Prochazka and A.J. Pavlik. In 2nd place was Lodge 80, Holland, represented by Frankie Pajestka, Sr. and Frankie Pajestka, Jr. In 3rd place was Lodge 47, Seaton, represented

by Daniel Hejl and Joe Kohut.

We have now completed our straight and "42" tournaments and we feel that both tournaments were a tremendous success. Not only did the tournaments bring on some friendly competition between fellow lodges, but also restated our closeness as an organization.

There were two mistakes made on page 7 of the last issue; one was in the 2 - column Annuity/Mortgage Rate Changes in columns 2 and 3.

The sentence reading: "A limited number of commercial property mortgage loans will be considered at an interest rate of 121/2 percent," was inadvertantly left out thus making the article read wrong. The statement: "Both rates are fixed interest rates, etc." applies to the 111/2 percent and 12 th percent only and does not apply to the 10 percent annuity rate which changes approximately every 3 months. Please read the correct 2 column copy on page 3 in this issue carefully. *** In the third column at the bottom of column 3, the second paragraph should have included the name of Brother Sid Pokladnik (District III). You are encouraged to do your best! *** With the gradual arrival of cold weather, many homeowners are beginning to think about how to cut the cost of staying warm.

For most of us, the key to cutting the heating costs is not to replace the old furnaces with the latest in heating technology. A new fuel efficient furnace can cost thousands of dollars and take years to pay for itself. Most homeowners can take less expensive steps on their own to cut their heating bills substantially.

As much as a third of heating costs may be caused by air leaks. Caulking and weatherstripping can trim up to 10 percent from your bill. Closing drapes at night will cut down on drafts. To save more, consider installing storm windows and insulated draperies.

After the air leaks have been plugged, insulating your home can reduce heating bills by an additional 20 to 30 percent. Just how much new insulation you need depends upon the climate where you live and the amount of insulation you already have.

In winter, the Energy Department suggests thermostats should be set at 65 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and dowered at night for maximum efficiency. Ceiling fans at a slow setting can help distribute the warm air that rises in a room.

Up to 20 percent of the monthly energy bill may go for heating water.

Most water heaters are set at 140 degrees, but you probably don't need water that hot unless your dishwasher has no superheating element. Lowering the setting to 120 degrees can save up to 18 percent of the energy used at higher settings. If the water heater is warm to the

touch, wrap it and its pipes in insulation for greater savings. This will save $8 to $20 per year.

You still have time to claim a federal tax credit of 15 percent of what you spend on some conservation items, such storm windows and insulation, up to $2,000. But you will have to hurry; the credits expire December 31st. More tips are contained in a 20 - page booklet, "Your Keys to Energy Efficiency."

Particularly vulnerable is the automatic transmission. Nearly 7 out of 10 owners say they have never replaced the transmission fluid and filters in their cars. Automatic - transmission fluid should be checked every 1,000 miles. Low fluid usually indicates a leak or malfunction. Have the situation checked and corrected. If fluid is discolored or smells burned, it probably has been overheated and should be replaced along with the filter. Fluid should be changed and the filter replaced every two years or 24,000 miles. *** The annual interest rate charged on tax underpayments and paid on overpayments will decrease from 11 to 10 percent on January I, 1986, says the IRS. The penalty for underpayments of required installments of individual and corporate estimated tax also will drop to 10 percent. *** With temperatures falling, now may be a good time to check the equipment in your car trunk. To cope with winter driving, the Automotive Information Council recommends each car trunk contain: An ice scraper, extra windshield - washer fluid, jumper cables, sandpaper to clean corroded battery terminals, gas - line antifreeze, lockthaw solution, a small shovel, a flashlight with fresh batteries, flares or reflective devices, a plastic garbage bag to kneel on in case you must change a tire in slushy snow, a list of phone numbers for road service and some spare change for phone calls. ***

Newsbrief Brother Joe M. Skrabanek, 96, passed away October 23, 1985 in the Angleton - Danbury Convalescent Home. Services were held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Palms Funeral Chapel in Angleton. Interment was in Danbury, Texas. Brother Skrabanek was a well - known fraternalist in the SPJST Society as well as in other numerous fraternal societies throughout the USA and.Canada. He was a retired SPJST director and S.P.J.S.T Rest Homes director.

Brother Skrabanek, who was a member of Lodge 139, outlived his policy last June and was honored by the Supreme Lodge and his local lodge.

Attending the funeral and representing the SPJST were SL President Howard Leshikar, District III Director and Board Chmn. Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik, District V Director Jerry Prochazka and SPJST Vestnik Editor Rudy J. Sefcik and Terry C. Sefcik. May his honorable memory remain with us forever.

Correction On Annuity/Mortgage Rate Changes

Annunity Interest Rate - Good News! The SPJST has increased the interest rate on annuities to 10 percent.

The new 10 percent rate will be effective on November 1, 1985. This will make our annuity program even more attractive and highly competitive. Our annuities can be used for both IRA and non - IRA accounts.

Mortgage Interest Rate - The interest for home loans/owner operated farm loans has been set at 11 V2 percent. A limited number of commercial property mortgage loans will be considered at an interest rate of

12 1/2 percent. Commercial property loans must be secured by land and buildings used to conduct owner operated businesses.

Both rates are fixed interest rates.

The maximum repayment term is 20 years. One year SPJST membership is required.

I Reform Proposals Threatening Future Of Fraternal Benefit System

By Alfred G. Haggerty LAS VEGAS -- The fraternal benefit system is in a fight for its very existence, according to top executives of at least two fraternal benefit societies.

Fraternalists were marshaling their forces here last week at the 99th annual meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America to keep the federal income tax exemption for the insurance operations of fraternal benefit societies.

They were successful in having proposals to kill the exemption removed from both the Treasury I and Treasury II tax reform packages, but, much to their surprise, the proposal has been revived in slightly modified form by the staff of the House Ways and Means Committee.

NFCA members were urged to contact Ways and Means congressmen and ask that the proposal be removed from the tax bill being developed by the committee. In the meantime, the NFCA is increasing its lobbying efforts.

Fighting for life "We're fighting for the life of the system," said David J. Larson, senior vice president, secretary and general

counsel of Lutheran Brotherhood, in an interview. He and William R. Heerman, senior vice president, secretary and general counsel, Aid Association for Lutherans, said the tax exemption is based on the charitable and benevolent nature of fraternal societies.

Peter Daly, executive vice president of the Independent Order of Foresters, in his report as the outgoing president of the NFCA, called the proposal to eliminate the tax exemption "probably the most serious threat ever to the fraternal benefit system."

"Our privileged tax - free position has been questioned at the higest levels of government," he said,. "In the future it is likely to be questioned again. Will we be successful in retaining our privileged position? I think we will."

In order to retain the exemption, Mr. Daly said, "We must continue to fulfill our responsibilities as fraternals because with privilege comes responsibility. Each society must continue to serve the needs of its members. As the needs of its members change, each society must change, and as societies change, the National Fraternal Congress must change."

-1111i1IMM "We think we have a basis for the exemption," Mr. Larson said. "Our organizations are benevolent and charitable in character and in operations. The 'level playing field' argument is not applicable to us because the exemption is not used to compete unfairly. It's used to fund charitable and benevolent programs.

We can't maintain a network of volunteerism without the funds realized from the exemption."

The NFCA, whose membership includes about 100 fraternal benefit societies with more than 10 million members, stated in a position paper on the tax exemption: "Although nominally limited to the insurance activities of fraternals, the practical effect of the proposal, if adopted, would be to repeal the exemption for fraternal beneficiary societies altogether since the expense of their fraternal activities invariably exceeds substantially their income from all sources other than insurance".

It notes that while elimination of the tax exemption would generate about $50 million a year in taxes, it would threaten fraternal and community service activities which cost more than $200 million in 1983. Fraternal

societies reported that they held over 600,000 fraternal events and that members performed more than 10 million personal acts of community service in which they expended some 25 million volunteer hours.

The position paper also notes that "the financial burden of many of the tangible charitable activities borne by fraternal societies relieves the burdens of government; some of them would have to be assumed by government if the fraternals were no longer able to provide them. For instance, sick care, orphan assistance, homes for the elderly, social services, disaster and catastrophe assistance and aid to the homeless are responsibilities that government has traditionally assumed in the absence of private charity.

"The evisceration of fraternal funded social programs, such as alcohol and drug abuse treatment, home safety, health, and water safety programs, could also be expected to have an adverse impact on health generally and result in greater health care costs, much of which would certainly fall on government's shoulders."

The paper contends that the tax proposal incorrectly assumes that

"There is no consistent pattern of fraternal insurance being less expensive than comparable commercial products," it says. "Rather, it appears that the cost of fraternal insurance varies within the same range as that of commercial insurance. Thus, there is no evidence that fraternal societies have attempted to gain a competitive advantage over commercial companies by under pricing their insurance."

Fraternal beneficiary societies have provided insurance to members since their inception, and the tax laws have recognized for more than 90 years that the character of that activity justified a tax exemption for fraternal societies," according to NFCA. "The purpose of fraternal insurance programs has not changed. Treasury has pointed to no changes in the law of charities or other evidence that would dictate re assessment of the exempt status of

fraternal societies. No state has sugggested any comparable change in status. And although fraternal societies have naturally grown in size over the years, size alone is certainly not a basis for disqualification."

The NFCA has also made it clear it will have no part of a proposal contained in Treasury H that the tax exemption be retained only for smaller societies. "We steadfastly adhered to the proposition that we would not be a house divided," said a Law Committee report. "We stood firmly by the premise that any incursion, regardless of how slight, would eventually affect us all."

13, Dime Box Donates To Charity Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 13 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, October 20th.

President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Dorothy Rachael then called the roll of officers. There were 7 present and 6 absent. Minutes from the September meeting were read by Sister Rachael. They were approved as read.

The mortuary report was read and approved by Sister Magdeline IseIt. The treasurer's report was read by Sister Doris Balcar. She reported a loss in income for the hall in September but the reason was, due to several large outstanding bills. The report was approved as read.

Since there was no communication from the Supreme Lodge, President Brother Flippin asked for discussion of old business.

Brother Ervin Iselt reported that the iron fence in back of the hall had been completed and that a water leak had been repaired. Brother Iselt did a very good job on the fence.

• New business was then discussed.

Brother Flippin reminded us that our insurance on the lodge hall was due November 1st.

Brother Arnold Tydlacka reported that we need more spare tables for the hall. Although we have plenty for regular dances, Brother Tydlacka felt we needed more for special occasions such as weddings, etc. It was decided to wait until after the first of the year since there were no more weddings scheduled for this year.

Sister Magdeline Iselt discussed purchasing a bun warmer for the kitchen. There was also discussion on the purchase of an electric portable oven. It was decided to let Sister Iselt purchase what she felt best since she

vras chairman of the kitchen crew.

Brother Ervin Iselt suggested installing a water cooler in the corner next to the kitchen; it was decided that this would be the best place.

Brother Iselt opened the floor for discussion on extra barbecue pits. It was decided to add extra pits. The Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department would furnish the labor and Lodge 13 would pay all other expenses.

Sister Doris Balcar brought it to our attention that it was the time of year for Blue Santa. Sister Albina Milburn made a motion that the lodge donate $50 for this charity. The motion was seconded by Sister Monica Spacek.

The motion carried.

Sister Magdeline Iselt reported on a new way of collecting dues in the future. Although nothing is definite, we feel that our lodge will probably remain as is. Everyone present felt that by keeping it local that it was a feeling of togetherness.

Brother Arnold Tydlacka reported that there was some problem collecting for private occasions. Several suggestions were discussed. Bet you didn't know -- Our lodge hall will be 10 years old October 26th!

Brother Claude Flippin reminded everyone that our next meeting will be held Sunday, November l7th,at 1 p.m. instead of the usual 2 p.m.; this is due to election of officers. EVERYONE PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND! With no further discussion, Sister Albina Milburn made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Brother Arnold Tydlacka seconded the motion.

Lodge 24, Cyclone To Elect Officers Dear Readers: Our monthly meeting, was called to order by President David Vanicek.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

We had two visitors at our meeting; they were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Leshikar. Thank you for coming and we welcome you back anytime.

Get well wishes are sent to Mr. L.B. Haisler who has been in the hospital.

Celebrating birthdays were Melanie Zavodny and Carl Macek. Robert and Barbara Macek were celebrating an anniversary this month; hope you all had a good day.

Thank you to Arleen Tschoerner and LaVerne Cabla for getting together the bus trip to the State Fair in Dallas. Everyone really enjoyed themselves; maybe we can do it again year again. Also, thanks to Albert Cabla and Charlie Bartek for participating in the Domino Tournament and representing Lodge 24.

We planned our Christmas Party which will be December 8 starting with "Happy Hour" from 3 to 4 p.m. The youth program will follow right at 4 p.m. and the meal will be at 5 p.m. The hail will furnish the meat and vegetables. Everyone is asked to bring a salad and dessert (both). Egg nog will be served throughout the evening.

Steve Harvel volunteered to get the Christmas tree. Louise Zavodny will be in charge of the kitchen that day.

The Rules & Regulations Committee redid the R&Rs, so if you want,to read them they will be posted in the hail

until our next meeting when we vote on them. Also, our next meeting will be election night; if you are interested in being an officer, please be at the next meeting.

New Year's-Eve tickets will be $5 per person. Mrs. Zavodny at Red Ranger Store will be in charge of reservations; phone her at 985 - 2554.

Our next meeting will be November 13 at 7:30 p.m. This is an important meeting so please be present.

Lodge 25, Ennis October Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our October 10, SPJST Lodge No. 25 meeting was called to order at 8 p.m. by President James Whitfill.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sergeant - at - Arms Garry Mizell.

Minutes of the September meeting were read by Recording Secretary Kay Kovar. These minutes were accepted as read. No correspondence was received this month.

Treasurer Emma Trojacek made her financial report. Her report was favorable which was good news to the members.

Known on the sick list for this month is Jane Dixon. We all wish you a very speedy recovery, Jane!

Brother Johnny I. Krajca made a motion to not book paid dances during the third Saturday of each month in respect to KJT. Motion carried. Those dances already booked will stay booked.

Brother Ernest Haskovec recommended to look into several ways of building up our activities to make more income; maybe even lowering the rental fee.

President Whit fill asked for two more committee persons to help Lillian Trojacek on the Nominating Committee; Brother Johnny I. Krajca and Elizabeth Ann Krajca both volunteered. These three members will have the task of finding candidates for our 1986 Lodge No. 25 officers.

New members are Madelyn Jo Cepak, Brian Cepak and Veronica Jo Cepak and Daniel K. Valek. Welcome new members!!

Since no one had either new or old business to discuss, President Whitfill called for a motion to adjourn.

Before adjournment, the members were shown the new colorful ashtrays which were recently purchased.

Lodge 28, East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: The first Sunday of the month is the regular scheduled date for the monthly meetings of Lodge Karel Jonas. The first Sunday in November is the 3rd and this is the date of the District VI fall meeting. To avoid a conflict, the local rule on meetings rules that we move our meeting to the next available date, therefore, the

second Sunday, the 10th, has been chosen for the November meeting.

The agenda will be a standard one with a few extras thrown in.

The meeting after the meeting is still scheduled at this time.

It took only three quarters of an hour to get everything taken care of in the October 6th meeting. The District VI meeting, on the 3rd of November, was discussed and with the exception of one. the most were maybes. There was no pressing business and all reports were accepted as given.

Brother A.J. 'Tony" Kelner won the door prize.

The meeting after the meeting was attended by all present at the business meeting. Sisters Haverda, Janik, Kortis, Srubar, , Foytik, Luquette and Nezval not only brought the major part of the food but they made up the major part of the cleanup crew. Brother Albert Lupik led the floor cleanup crew.

29, Taylor October Meeting

Lodge

The October meeting was called to order by President Edwin Adamek at 4 p.m. and he also led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. We remained standing in respect to our deceased Sister Alice Faltesek.

Secretary Mike Kaiser read the roll call of officers; absent was Geraldine Steger.

The minutes of our last meeting were read. The Property Committee's report, the treasurer's and audit reports were given by Donna Pasemann.

Correspondence included a thank you letter from Frances Schwenker, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I administrator from Taylor, thanking our lodge for donating a riding lawnmower to the rest home.

Our lodge also received a plaque from the 4. - H Club for letting them use our hall for their 4 - H Banquet and Food Show.

President Adamek then showed us the two beautiful trophies Herbert Riethmeyer and he won at the "42" tournament.

He also reported that their Tom Wats sales were real good; this was to raise money for their youth club. The top sales person was Vernon Anderson and "second was Shannon Pasemann.

Door prizes were won by Katherine Adamek, H.A. Susan and Bobby Wuensche.

Our next lodge meeting will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 3rd. It's time

Lodge 40 To Elect Officers Dear Vestnik Readers: The October meeting of the El Campo - Hilije Lodge 40 was called to order at 7:40 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was followed by a minute of silent prayer for our departed members, both were led by President James Kulcak.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers and read the minutes of the September meeting. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all accounts. There was a transfer of funds and a conversion of one account.

Suggestion was made to increase insurance coverage on the hall since it is now finished. Prices are being looked into by Brother Frankie Vanek.

Thank yous were received for money donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Sophie Martinek and Ida Chada White.

Youth Leader Vlas t a Bartos reported on youth club activities. A donation has been sent to the Statue of Liberty Restoration Fund. The youth will be selling Christmas ornaments along with the project tickets at the District VI meeting.

Michael Marek is to attend and give a speech at the Fraternal Congress.

November project is to write a "Prayer of Thanks."

District VI President Ardis Bacak reminded us of the November 3rd meeting at the Community Center in Victoria.

November will be election month.

The Nominating Committee will be James Bacak, Margie Kulcak and Dora Lee Kopecky.

Second Vice President Rita Vanek reminded members to check their insurance policies to see if the beneficiary is correct. Policy change forms are available through Supreme Lodge or Secretary Laverne Bacak.

Finit Vice President Bennie Reck informed us the men's restrooms have been repaired and look good.

Ladies' restroom mirror is on order.

We are counting on a good turnout for the November election; this is important time for our lodge.

49, Rowena To Sponsor Show-Flea Market

Lodge

The quarterly Community Flea Market, along with a beautiful quilt display,will be held at the SPJST Hall in Rowena all day Saturday, November 2nd.

These quilts and afghans are all very pretty and homemade. They will be in baby bed size to large king size; some will be for sale.

The flea market always has interesting items to sell -even some

trash and treasures. There will also be homemade goods for sale including kolache, cakes, pies and egg noodles.

Real homebaked barbecue sandwiches will be served starting at 11 a.m.

Booths are still available for this event; call Elizabeth Walther at 442 2001.

Lodge 49 will have their regular business meeting November 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lodge 49 Hall. There will also be election of officers for the coming year.

Dear Members: Our meeting last Monday got started with the recitation of the pledge to our flag.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of our last meeting and reports of the following committees were given: Entertainment Committee by 2nd Vice President Jim Novak.

Sunshine Committee -- Get well, Paul Sanders, Ceil Kretsinger, Jeanne Pool and Larry Petr, New Baby Cards -- Larry Sadecky (baby boy), Eddie and Diane Oates (baby girl), Bill and Debbie Kerr (baby boy).

Sympathy Cards -- Wanda Kopecky (loss of brother), Milton Honza (loss of brother).

Decorating Committee -- Harvest dance decoration was discussed.

House Committee -- Had no report except to thank the two members who picked up on the parking lot.

Hall Rental -- Chairman Petr gave his usual good report.

Special Committee -- Sister Salac gave the report.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council will meet at our lodge November 13 with Lodge 84 as host. Please plan to come and bring pastry to be served.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the youth were preparing for the Halloween Party to be held October 30th at 7 p.m. -- Remember it's on the 30th! The Christmas Program was also discussed at their meeting.

President Schultz thanked the youth in behalf of the lodge for supplying the entertainment after the dinner meal Sunday. The benefit dinner was for the Statue of Liberty repair and the Abused Children.

Our newletter has a name so watch for it on the next issue. Sister Dorothy Reznik sent in the chosen name.

Abused Children's Committee Of Lodge 88 Donates $1,100 For Child Abuse Programs (See photo on page one) A check for $700 was presented by Brother Homer Alexander, chairman of the Abused Children's Committee, Lodge 88, Houston to Mrs. Jennifer Stansbury, supervisor of Family Outreach Center, Houston, Texas.

The Family Outreach Center furnishes free services in aiding in family crisis in an attempt to avert possible child neglect and abuse. This is done on a one - to - one counseling by trained volunteers. Parenting education classes are conducted by the center, and all friends, neighbors, relatives or other individuals concerned that child abuse or emotional abuse may be occurring in a particular family are encouraged to contact the center.

Three Family Outreach Centers are located throughout the Houston area: Southwest Houston - (713) 665 0385 Spring Branch/Memorial - (713) 974 - 4825 Clear Lake/Bay Area - (713) 486 8827 The center operates only on donations and contributions and receives no funding from any other source.

Other donations from the Abused Children Committee include contributions of $200 to San Jose Clinic, Houston, which administers to children in need of medical attention and $213 was donated to Covenant ouse, Houston which takes in abused, run- away and other

neglected children whose lives have been wrecked.

Previous donations have been made to the two latter organizations.

The Houston Community and SPJST Lodge 88 are proud to have such charitable and humane organizations as a part of our community.

All of the above donations were from the proceeds of a benefit dance for abused children and sale of prize tickets conducted by the Abused Children Committee of Lodge 88. This was a tremendous success and the committee wishes to thank all who bought dance and prize tickets.

Four prizes were given away and the winners are as follow: 1. Dan Berry from SPJST Lodge 172 in Pasadena won the $25 money hat.

2. Bill Malone won a beautiful oil painting that was painted and donated by Sister Agnes Cheyney of Lodge No. 88.

3. Harold Lostak from SPJST Lodge No. 139 in Danbury won the wine, cheese, and sausage basket donated by Lodge 88 Board of Trustees.

4. Dorothy Beaman won the stainless table flatware that was donated by Brother Bill and Sister McCaskill and Brother Louis and Sister Doris Darilek of Lodge 88.

Austin 155 Reports

After adjournment, a delicious chili supper, also cold cuts of meats, cheese, large bowl of sliced fresh fruit with poppy seed dressing, oatmeal and pecan pies, cookies, and more were served by the gracious hostess and host Mina and Charles.

Members browsed through the home admiring the 35 antique clock collection, countless figurines from around the world in all the rooms, and the crock collection from childhood.

Thank you for the supper and for the tour of your home displaying your precious collectibles.

The November 3rd meeting will be held at the home of Raymond and Alice Prasatik, 3000 Enfield Road at 3 p.m. A chicken and dumpling supper is planned.

A museum - like atmosphere was prevalent at the October 13 meeting held in the interesting home of Charles and Mina Sponberg.

Charles Sponberg, veteran, led the recitation allegiance to the flag.

Our officers Vice President Sharon Gavin and Treasurer John Bryce Hejl were unable to attend.

All communications were read and reports made.

Steady progress is being made to direct billing of premiums from the state office in Temple. There will be no loss of contact with each member. This lodge is growing and will continue to prosper in the future. Monthly meetings and socials will be held as always. We also urge members to give this lodge names of prospects for membership. SPJST has practically every kind of insurance you may wish and is the most reasonable. Our representatives will be happy to contact them, explain any plan, and send them an application. The Supreme Lodge is cooperative and supportive of our lodge efforts and goals. We are proud to belong to such a strong prosperous organization, always remembering the dreams of our forefathers who structured the framework of our beloved SPJST with humble beginnings.

A monetary gift was voted on to give Mr. Albert Heine, father of Laverne Hejl, who is suffering with a serious heart condition. We ask God's blessing and prayers for a complete recovery.

A Nominating Committee for selecting a slate of officers for 1986 was named by the president as follows: Marianna Wood, chairman, Georgia Matejek Robertson and Faye Mares.

Christmas dinner/party plans were discussed. Announcement will be made at the November meeting.

Lodge 176 , Houston Northwest To Elect Officers

Dear Members: The annual meeting of Lodge 176 will be held November 18, 1985, at 17327 Glenmorris at 7 p.m.

Lodge 177, Academy Held October Meeting The October meeting of Lodge 177 was called to order at 7:33 p.m. by President Bill Hutka.

All officers were present, 18 members and 2 visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Crosley attended the meeting.

Mrs. Crosley is with the SSI Program for disabled children. She gave a short talk on how monies donated were used for equipment and medical supplies and asked the lodge to keep this worthy cause in mind through our many donations from bingo.

Libbie Bartek sent a sympathy card to the Jack Chaney family and a get well card to Edith Bruce.

President Bill Hutka asked the members to remember Jean Driska in our prayers. Jean has been in bad health for a number of years and was always in attendance and willing to help where she could; we miss you, Jean. We need more members like you.

Minutes were read and approved from the last meeting.

Communications were from the Bell County Child Welfare Board thanking the lodge for the free use of the hall for their fish fry. Also, the lodge received a commendation plaque recognizing the lodge for our many donations. Walter Jezek, board member, remarked that, to his knowledge, our lodge was the only one recognized in this manner. A letter was also received from Sister Annie Dusek thanking the lodge for the $1,000 scholarship in memory of Brother Willie Dusek's name.

Kitchen Chairman Othen Jezek gave the lodge a check for $700 for the special account and, as usual, had a good report. Bar Chairman Helen Bland transferred $2,000 from the bar account. Bingo Chairman Otis Beck gave a check for $2,272 for 3 month utilities from the bingo account. All other reports were also given.

Three new members are Joshua Holmes, Angela Holmes and Linda Daniel.

Trustee Report -- Edward Bartek stated the trustees must look into our exit door locks. Vice President Otis Beck installed some new doors in one men's room; we seem to have a vandal who wreaks havoc with our men's restrooms.

RVOS will have their usual meal at our lodge.

First House, the child abuse home, has been closed and Walter Jezek, chairman of the Child Abuse Fund, reported there was a surplus of $1,319.54 in the account.

The taxes are here and will be rendered: now that will be one hurt over with.

Candy Bland asked the lodge to again donate this year for the Academy School Carnival. Any money donated is used to make more money to be put back into the school. Last year's $500 donation made enough money to get new swing equipment and a water fountain. This year the PTA hopes to make enough to put pea gravel on the play ground. Edward Bartek made a motion to again donate $500 from the bingo account.

• Helen Bland made a motion to donate the surplus Child Abuse Fund to the Mexia School for their swimming pool fund; this money would be brought up to $1,500 from the Bingo Fund. There however was a question about using a dedicated fund without first an OK from Bob Bullock's office and we are awaiting an answer before anything is done

since to one else has the authority to do whatever with this fund.

A Nominating Committee was appointed. Those serving on it are Othen Jezek, Cecil La Grange and Louis Driska.

The meeting adjourned at 8:19 p.m.

Our first Fall Festival is over and we can call it a failure-success; the weather was so bad we had very few people but we had many donations and for this we are grateful to you who donated and to the members who worked and participated. Hats off to you! We had a ballibecause of you it was a success.

We few played the games and had the auction and made some money. This first year was a trial and error. Next year we'll be better at this.

At this time I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Libbie, Teresa, Barbara, Ray, Josie, Carolyn, Gaylon, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Kotrla, Phil, Rosalee, Nita, Helen and all her children, Alex, Jesse, Otis, Dorothy, Bruce and Edward (the barbecuers), Mr. and Mrs. Mike Mayfield, Barbara Lewis and her husband, Keith and Kevin.

Most special thanks to Louis Driska who sold more tickets, got more donations, helped with the auction, and worked as many hours as the rest of us Saturday. If I left out anyone's name, I'm sorry because we appreciated everything everyone did for our first Fall Festival.

183 Mid-Cities Report Lodge

Dear Members: The crowd at the October 12th dance was small but everyone had a good time and enjoyed the music.

The Czech Harvesters played here Saturday, October 26th, to our polka fans.

District III meeting was held Sunday, October 27th, at Lodge 66, Waco.

I would like to remind you of the dance Saturday, November 16th, with Rhythm Reunion, a country/western band, will be playing so all of you country and western fans mark that date and bring all your friends and have a ball at the hall.

Remember the second Sunday, December 8th, is the 4 - lodge Christmas Party (Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183). This year is Lodge 183's time to host the big event. All of you who attended the last three years know how much fun that can be, so you members be sure to be there and show the other three lodges how friendly Lodge 183 can be. Anyone of you who would like to help make the day a big success, please let Pat Sill, B.J. Hlavaty or Inez Greenlees know if there is anything you can do that will make the day even a bigger success.

If you don't like the officers or the way they are running the lodge, this is one time in the year that you can do something about it.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Although the sky was overcast and threatening rain, our Ladies' Circle with forty - four (members and friends) happily boarded a Trailways bus to go to visit the SPJST Museum in Temple, Texas.

For a short time you could hear the buzz of happy voices of friendly conversation up and down the aisles until the excitement of being together again finally died down. This was the right time for Clara Cohen to passout song sheets to the group and start a "sing - song" of both Czech and American songs. She was joined by Rosie Steinman who knew the words and tunes to several Czech songs.

Upon arriving at our destination, we drove to Alice's Cafe, whose owners, Leonard and Alice Mraz, greeted us at the door. Alice is a niece of Clara Cohen.

After lunch we again entered the bus and drove to the museum where we were met by Otto Hanus, curator, and his assistant who directed our tour. Everything was so interesting and brought back many memories of by gone days. Some of the things we saw were the first Czech home, a complete pioneer kitchen, pioneer tools, a doctor's office complete with his tools used in that era. We saw dolls, furniture, and many who used to live in this vicinity saw a handmade quilt complete with names of friends and places. We left with President Howard Leshikar bidding us a fond farewell and inviting us to come. again.

En route home we stopped in West just long enough for those who wished to purchase kolace and sausage. We arrived back at our lodge by 5:30 p.m.

We are glad to see Esta Belle Hubenak, Inez Krivanek and Victor Murphy back from their two weeks' Foliage Trip across the USA. I received cards from them from Missouri, New York, Vermont, Kentucky, Illinois, Niagara Falls and Ontario, Canada. They made me feel that I was on the trip with them.

We were sorry to learn of the death of Richard Hubenak III, son of Peggy Hubenak. We wish to extend our sympathy to Peggy and her family.

One of our happy events was the

wedding of Frances Grizzard and Bob Blake at St. George's Catholic Church and the lovely reception on Havenwood at his son's house afterwards. We wish the couple a long, happy and prosperous life together.

Our next meeting will be at the regular time at Lodge No. 92, Tuesday, November 12, 1985. It will be our Thanksgiving dinner. Dona Hubenak and Frances Simmank will cook the turkey, dressing and gravy.

Other members will bring vegetables and salads and desserts as assigned at the last meeting. Those who were not present bring pies. There will be a $3 charge for guests and to those who do not bring anything.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: Thirty - two members and guest, Mrs. Eva Krivanek, enjoyed another day of food, games and fellowship at the October meeting.

The birthday members were Bessie Brizinia, Louise Oujesky, Frank Tesar, Ima Lou La Plant and Roberta Peters.

November 6th, the family night Thanksgiving turkey dinner will be served, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Non members are invited, but there will be a nominal charge of $2 for the spouse of a member; $3 for a guest and $1.25 for children up to 12 years of age.

After dinner a drawing will be held and some lucky person or persons will be a winner of a handmade Strawberry Shortcake doll and a handmade tissue dollholder. Games will also be played.

The hostesses will be Mary Pavey, Jo Prochaska, Bessie Prochaska and Rosie Steinman.

Those members who did not attend the October meeting and did not sign the Thanksgiving menu, we will ask you to make a money donation if you attend the dinner to help defray the cost of the turkey.

We wish to express our congratulations to Irene and Harold Green who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a mass, dinner and dance held October 5th.

Their family and many friends had a delightful afternoon and evening.

Several of our members helped in some capacity to make the 45th American - Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas, Sunday, October 6th, another success. The guest speaker, Editor R. J. Sefcik, gave a very inspiring speech. His wife, Maxine, looked lovely in her new Czech kroj.

Our congratulations to Verka (Matustikova) Carpenter who graduated from the American Airlines Training School as an airline hostess, October 22nd in Ft.Worth and will be based in Chicago.

Verka made her home with Henrietta and Jerry Milan after leaving Kunovic - Uher Hradisti in Moravia, Czechoslovakia one year ago. Incidentally, that is the

You can imagine the dual excitement when the American Airlines made it possible for Verka's parents to fly here to the states to witness their daughter's graduation. It made many of us who know the family, from visiting them while in Czechoslovakia, just as happy.

In order for all relatives and close friends to visit with Vera and Frank Matustik, a dinner was given in their honor October 20th. Out - of - town guests were Mrs. Shirley (Obal) Clegg of Surrey, B.C. Canada and Mrs. Anne Banfi (mother of Henrietta Milan) from Chicago.

We express our sincere sympathy to the family of Richard (Rick) Hubenak III of Houston whose funeral services were in Ft. Worth, September 30, 1985.

In, Society Beckons To Passers Czech

Fraternal organization encourages Texans' pride in their Slavic heritage

By Mylene Dressler Special to The News TEMPLE, Texas - Travelers headed south on Interstate 35 between Dallas and Austin come upon a road sign just south of Waco: "Czech Stop. Five miles."

The sign is actually an advertisement for a store. But as motorists pass similar billboards advertising Czech food, antiques or friendliness, curiosity prompts some motorists to slow down and sample the area's Slavic heritage. Nothing pleases Howard Leshikar more.

Leshikar - president of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas - likes to direct visitors to Temple and to the home office of his organization, which is known as the SPJST (for its Czech initials) by its 75,000 members.

"We're the largest Czech fraternal organization in the state," Leshikar said.

Although Leshikar admitted that his order and its work may not be well - known, he said the group's roots go back to the mid - 1800s, when immigrants from what is now Czechoslovakia arrived in Texas see king land and opportunity.

"Most were farmers," he said. `They were alone in a strange land, and they wanted to be self - sufficient.

So they had to band together, help themselves. And of course they brought habits and traditions from the old country -they wanted to keep those alive as well."

One of the immigrants' most pressing concerns was the need to care for widows and children left without support.

"Laborers had organizations that provided life insurance, but not farmers," said Leshikar.

The SPJST filled the need.

Erected under a lodge system, the Texas order was born in La Orange in 1897, and the organization has been growing steadily ever since, Leshikar said.

"Basically you can divide our function into four parts," said Leonard Mikeska, the order's secretary and treasurer. 'There's the fraternal - social aspect - meetings, dances and so on; community service; preservation of the Czech heritage; and our financial services which

include" insurance and low - interest loans for homes and farms."

The order has 128 lodges in Texas, Mikeska said.

The largest with 9,400 members is in Houston. But Temple, chosen for its central location, is the site of the Supreme Lodge, headquarters for the Slavonic Benevolent Order .

"Our title is a bit misleading," said Leshikar, and a person need not be of Czech or Slavic descent to become a member.

"First of all, we're Americans," Mikeska said.

But Americanization has also taken its toll on the organization, Leshikar said.

"Many of the old customs are dying out, and most of the youngsters don't speak Czech anymore," he said.

"We experienced a period of pessimism in the '50s," Mikeska said. `The members were mainly of the older generation, and people began to feel that our years were limited, that we were a thing of the past. `That's when we realized we were going to have to get the young people interested."

Since 1970, the order has operated a large youth program, Mikeska said, sponsoring three summer camps, a large scholarship fund and a statewide youth achievement day. An SPJST king and queen are also elected during the order's convention every four years.

The order spends $8,000 annually on efforts to preserve the Czech language, which Leshikar claims is the third most - spoken tongue in Texas.

"Now the old feelings have been reversed, and we have a great optimism, a feeling of progress and growth," said Mikeska.

"We try to stay family - oriented, and our lodges cater to both young and old," said Leshikar. 'We try to create a good environment ."

By no means does the order limit its good works to its members alone, Leshikar said.

"In April we passed our second anniversary of partnership with the Department of Human Resources and its program to prevent child abuse," Leshikar said.

The Supreme Lodge co - sponsored the Regional Network Children's Conference held in March in Austin, he said.

Locally, individual lodges hosted child - abuse - awareness programs reaching 39,000 people and donated food, clothing, furniture and thousands of dollars to the project, Leshikar said.

Many lodges also give to the state's only Czech museum, Leshikar said. `The old - timers willed us the things their children didn't want if we promised to keep them safe," he said.

The museum and library boast more than 1,900 items and 25,000 volumes.

Leshikar said he believes the museum reflects a sense of community and belonging among Texas' Czechs -a pride in where they are going and where they have been.

'We've managed to change but stay together," Leshikar said.

Gear Up For 1986

Czechs

The association, Texane Ceskeho Puvodu or Texans of Czech. Ancestry JTOCA], is setting the stage for a series of activities for the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial year. The group announced some of its ambitious plans which should make 1986 a year that will be long remembered in Czech communities throughout Texas.

One idea that is gaining interest is that of changing the Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas into a three - day affair. The first day would be devoted to history - genealogy, the second would emphasize Czech music and the third would honor prominent Czechs over the past one hundred thirty - four years in Texas. This proposal is soon to be considered by the State Fair Czech Day Committee.

All the various Czech festivals and Czech events being held annually throughout Czech - populated communities in Texas are being encouraged to adopt Sesquicentennial themes and to use the theme word "Sesquicentennial" in their names.

The annual "barbecues" held at various halls and lodges will be encouraged to spice up their festivities by including the "Sesquicentennial" as their theme.

Two or more "Czech Sesquicentennial Symposiums" will be held in the State of Texas during 1986.

The Czechs have held symposiums in the past and these events have drawn large numbers seeking to learn more about their culture. The symposiums provide Czech Texans the opportunity to learn and share some of the customs and traditions of their ancestry.

Efforts will be made to have historical markers placed at sites involving Czech Texas history.

Examples are homes or graves of Czech individuals prominent in our Texas history and the locations of events important to the history of Texas, including church and school sites.

Persons throughout the state will be encouraged and assisted in the preparatio.n and publication of Czech family histories or histories of the Czech people in Texas. Every community where there has been a preponderance of Czech families in the last one hundred thirty - four years will be encouraged and assisted in preparing booklets or books on the history of places, persons and events.

Plans are also being pursued to have the 1936 album of autobiographies of prominent Czechs updated to include persons prominent in the last fifty years and reprinted as a new volume or volumes. Old books concerning the history of the Czechs in Texas will be reprinted and made available for sale to the public.

Cemeteries throughout the State of Texas where persons of Czech ancestry are buried will be inventoried before June 1, 1986 and data published in volumes as necessary.

A Czech Sesquicentennial register is planned. Every person of Czech ancestry will be requested to submit an eighty - word resume on his/her ancestors in Texas before 1900 for inclusion in a comprehensive Czech Sesquicentennial Pioneer Register.

Congregations which were or are predominantly of Czech ancestry will prepare a history of their church and congregation for inclusion in a volume of the history of Czech churches in Texas.

Communities which are predominantly of Czech ancestry, where there was a pioneer school, will

research and write a history of their particular "Czech" school for inclusion in a volume covering Czech schools in Texas.

Czech families who were in the State of Texas before the year 1886 (or descendants thereof) will be eligible to be awarded Pioneer Texas Czech Family Certificates upon presentation of a completed application form to be provided and a nominal registry fee of five dollars ($5). Proof of residence in Texas before 1886 in the form of a Census entry, declaration of intention or other valid documents will qualify one for the certificate. Persons desirous of being awarded a Pioneer Texas Czech Certificate need to request the application form and guidelines for this project.

Prepares For Sesquicentennial Year West

The Sesquicentennial Committee of West, Texas was sanctioned by the Texas Commission in April 1984. The master plan includes many activities to be co - sponsored with the Westlest Association and presented during the Westfest weekend in August 1986.

The major project, however, of the West Sesquicentennial Committee is the establishment of a Library Museum facility for the citizens of West. There are many pioneer families in the community who possess articles of historical significance, and they should have an appropriate facility in which to display and share these articles with all the people. A public museum is an ideal place for such a purpose. To obtain some working capital for this project, the West Sesquicentennial Committee is selling the West Heritage Cookbook, a collection of more than 700 recipes submitted by 200 plus contributors.

Many of these recipes are traditional Czech family recipes passed down from generation to generation. The cookbook is an ideal gift for weddings, birthdays, and the Christmas season.

CESAT Executive Board Meeting A meeting of the Executive Board of the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT) was held at the Fayette County Library in LaGrange, Saturday, September 28, 1985.

A review of the progress being made in the teaching of the Czech language throughout Texas indicated that, even though there are numerous classes being held in various Texas cities, Austin, Temple, Alief, Houston, more effort needs to be applied to encourage school officials to include Czech language study in high school and college curriculum. Jerry Odstrcil, math teacher at Schulenberg High School, has been working to develop interest in Czech among the students at Schulenberg High School with hopes of convincing school authorities to provide support for this activity at their school.

The Czech language program at the University of Texas at Austin, now headed up by Mr. Woody Smith, has an enrollment of 26 students this semester, which indicates an improvement in interest over recent years. It was agreed that CESAT and the Czech Club at UT (Austin) should work together to develop ways and means of encouraging UT students to take Czech language courses. Plans for a Czech Orientation Day at UT were discussed and will be formalized at a later date.

In regards to the decline in the teaching and study of the Czech language, Mr. Albert Blaha compared the enrollment of over 100 students in Czech classes at UT (Austin) in 1933 when Dr. Micek was Head of the Slavic Language Department with the low enrollments in schools this year.

A discussion led by Dr. Clinton Machann about establishing a Chair for Czech Language Studies at some university in Texas indicated that this program had to be tabled because no commitment had been made with regard to the proposal submitted by Texas A&M. However, the Executive Committee expressed a desire to continue to work toward the development of a chair in Czech language studies at some university in Texas.

To help advance these goals of CESAT the KJT Society recently donated $500 to the association.

Roger Kolar, chairman of the Historical Committee, reported on his work to locate a convenient place to store CESAT records, one possible location being the Fayette County Public Library. Albert Blaha reported that the Czech Heritage Scoiety was also looking for a record storage location, and that it is possible that many Czech organizations could use one common location for all records.

Roger Kolar and Dr. Clinton Machann are to make an inventory of various society records, where located and interest of other organizations in utilizing a common storage location.

Dr. Clinton Machann, chairman of the 1986 Sesquicentennial Symposium Committee, reported that the symposium with the theme of "Czech Music in Texas" will be held at the Brazos Center, Bryan, Texas, November 14, 15 and 16, 1986.

Prochaska, Albert Blaha, Calvin Chervenka and Jerry Odstrcil. The Czech Concert Orchestras from Dallas and Houston, plus several choral and dance groups, will perform.

Dr. Machann will appreciate the support of any other Czech organizations in this symposium activity. Czech organizations desiring to advertise and/or promote the goals of their society will be welcome to use the symposium for their purpose.

CESAT Executive Board passed a motion to give one accredited Czech language teacher $300 for expenses to attend the Central Slavic Language Conference in Oklahoma, October 18 and 19, 1985.

The next Executive Board meeting will be scheduled for the first weekend in December.

Ennis Sewing Circle Club The months of August, September, and October didn't bring us a lot of members to the Sewing Circle, but the month of October meeting did have little improvement. Ladies, what are you going to do about this? A good suggestion is to blow off everything else and start coming. This really works.

The circle began a Memorial Fund and donations were made in memory of Frank Sebestik , husband of Mary; $5 donations each were given by Bob and Anne Zvolanek, Tom and Alice Roberts, Libbie Wisniewski, Georgia Tupy, Georgia Zabojnik and Vojteska Janicek.

A vacation trip was made by Bob and Anne Zvolanek this year to Czechoslovakia. A card was received by them from Cesky Raj to the circle.

They attended a Sokol type event held every five years in Prague, I believe.

Anne showed the circle colorful pictures of this huge event. Also, a trip was made by President Sadie Kubin to Hawaii with a group of people and it is understood that this was an exciting and enjoyable trip. Alice Crone sent a card from Alaska.

The circle now has small sales at each meeting. These sales are on things club members bring on their own accord and will be applied to charitable organizations. A date will be picked out for the donations.

Discussions took place on playing bingo last month. Discussions also took place whether to have smoked turkey or fried chicken for the club's Thanksgiving luncheon in November.

Fried chicken is now on the menu.

Liddie Polacek brought plants for mini - elephant sale.

Quilting was done by the club for Georgia Zabojnik in August, Hattie Lekar in September and Mary Polasek in October. Hattie Lekar is donating a quilt to the club's Christmas give away and to be quilted at the November meeting.

Two charitable organizations sent correspondence to the club -- Meals on Wheels sent a thank you letter plus their yearly budget, and Statue of Liberty sent us a certificate for framing. However, the certificate will have to be sent back for correction due to typing error.

For you members who are unable to attend due to illness, surgery, etc., as that's been the case with a lot of you, we receive your messages and regards to the club members through other members and as the saying goes, sometimes "When it rains, it, pours."

Get wells to you and blow off as much

as you can to get better. Let's don't forget next month, members, the Thanksgiving luncheon because last year that fried chicken was real good and we have it again.

Thirteenth Kulhanek Reunion Held Recently One hundred twenty - five descendants of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek were present for the 13th Kulhanek reunion held Sunday, September 29, 1985 at Sts. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsburg, Texas.

Rev. Werner Buckholt celebrated Holy Mass for deceased family members at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Assisting Rev. Buckholt was Deacon Jerry Kulhanek of Galena Park, Texas Leonard Kulhanek of Houston served as Lector. Gift bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Kulhanek, Lisa and Timothy.

Registration began at 11 a.m. A basket lunch was served at 12:15 p.m. with Rev. Buckholt leading the prayer before the meal was served The business meeting began at 1:30 p.m. with Mrs. Adeline Dvorak, president, presiding. Deacon Jerry Kulhanek led the opening prayers and welcomed everyone to the reunion.

Mrs. Ruth Ann Wunderlich, secretary, read the minutes, and Mrs. Cora Wostarek gave the treasurer's report.

Leonard Kulhanek, historian, spoke briefly about The Kulhanek Family History Book which he completed last year. He stated that the price of the book will remain at $7 plus $2.50 postage and handling for mail orders.

The oldest female relative present was Mrs. Albina Krenek of Wallis, Texas, age 93 years. The youngest person present was 6 - week - old Lindsey Roberts, daughter of Larry and Sharon Faldyn Roberts of Katy, Texas. The most recently married couple attending were Mr. ,and Mrs. Mark Kubicek of New Ulm, Texas, married 8 days.

Veterans MemorialService, November 10 At Praha, Texas The annual veterans memorial service at Praha, Texas will be held November 10 at 10:30 a.m. This year it will be dedicated to Father Marcus Valenta and all the veterans of all wars who gave their supreme sacrifice for their country.

The Confederate Air Force will The Pearl Harbor survivors will lead the congregation in the Pledge of ...Allegiance in English. The San Antonio Czech Choral Club will lead the congregation in the Pledge of Allegiance in Czech; also another patriotic song will be sung in the Czech language.

At the laying of the wreaths at the veterans' graves, the Choral Club will sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic in English.

During the conclusion of the memorial service, the Choral Club will lead the congregation in singing the beautiful song, God Bless America.

Chairman Ernest Chaloupka extends an invitation on behalf of the Praha residents to each and everyone.

New to this year's State Fair is the TEXAS STAR, the largest known ferris wheel in the U.S.

Lodge 88 and Lodge 142 youth members were once again thrilled at being asked to dance the Reseda at the State Fair in Dallas. Three circles of our dancers performed the long version (31 minutes) along with others of Czech fraternal organizations. Sincere thanks to Conductor Cyril Pokladnik and the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra for their accompaniment during the morning program.

While the entertainment and

beautiful display of costumes within the Band Shell Plaza continued through the noon hours and beyond, the lure of the Midway drew us to such awesome spectaculars as the TEXAS STAR, a giant Ferris wheel type ride. Lengthy lines at the rides and other amusements, however, restrained most in our group to just sightseeing.

Brother Krobot was a resident of Bay City for 46 years; he was a Dow Chemical Company employee after 29 years of service as an engineer technician.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Laura Pesak Krobot of Bay City; a son and daughter - in - law, Franklin G. and Virginia Krobot of Hallettsville; three brothers, Jim and Louis Krobot of Needville and Joe Krobot of Boling; two sisters, Bessie Dolezal of Edna and Liddie Flessnes of Rosenberg; and four grandchildren, Karen and Laura Hulen of Clear Lake and Jason and Denise Krobot of Hallettsville.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Charlotte Hulen, March 24, 1971 and by a grandson, Harry Hulen.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

July 31 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Frank Seaman officiating. Burial was in the Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, Texas.

Of Interest Sulfites On Vegetables On The Way Out College Station --- Use of sulfites as a preservative on fresh fruits and vegetables may be on the way out.

The Food and Drug Administration is proposing a ban on sulfites due to growing public concern about possible health risks posed by these agents, points out Dr. Al Wagner, food technologist with the TAES at Texas A&M University System.

FDA estimates that up to one million people may be sulfite sensitive, most of whom are asthmatic.

The ban would modify the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status of six forms of sulfites: sulfur dioxide, sodium sulfite, sodium and potassium bisulfite and sodium and potassium metabisulfite.

The proposed ban pertains not only to fruits and vegetables intended to be served or sold raw, but also includes those fruits and vegetables that may not actually be fresh but are presented to the consumer as fresh, such as thawed frozen fruits and vegetables, Wagner points out.
