SPJST Home Office Announces New Data Entry Procedures

The week of September 9th was a "busier than usual" one at the Home Office. Computer updating to better serve our membership was conducted by our Home Office Personnel and Representatives of USSI, Altamonte Springs, Florida.

This computer updating will allow increased service to our membership.

Changes to internal procedures were made to increase control and expedite direct billing, accounting methods and investments. Universal Life procedures were installed and tested and all systems performed in an outstanding manner.

Liberty And Freedom's Dream Who and what created the Statue of Liberty? First, the faith of . a few people who believed in the ideal of a constitutional government, equality before the law and individual opportunity.

Second, an artist of grand vision who had the fortitude to sustain his project through almost 20 years of trial. developing rapidly Third, technology which allowed the construction of a colossus on an unprecedented scale.

Fourth, dedicated organizers who mobilized public resources to support and finance an international effort.

Ideals and beliefs shaped by circumstances lie behind every great human achievement.

The Statue of Liberty embodies the very ideal of democracy and the beliefs that government should be controlled by law, individual should be free to use their talents and property without arbitrary interference, and no person should be denied human dignity.

From 1776 to the present, Americans have been dedicated to a democracy and freedom. The phrase "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" captured the public mind and pushed inexorably into every aspect of American life. On the other hand, in the succession of governments which ruled France from 1791 to 1875, advocates of a democratic constitution were often an outcast minority.

The winner for the 1986 model year was the Chevrolet Sprint ER -- a three cylinder car actually made in Japan -which scored an average of 60 miles per gallon on the highway and 55 mpg in the city.

Also this year, the "gas guzzler" tax kicks in for autos that fail to achieve at last 22.5 mpg. The tax range is $500 to $3,850 per car, depending on how much the mileage misses the target.

Previously, this manufacturer's tax -which is in turn passed on to the consumer -- was levied on cars that scored less than 21 mpg. *** It is becoming more tempting for travelers to rent a car in one city and drop it off at another. The reason: Car - rental companies increasingly are doing away with drop - off fees; which run from $5 to $400. But check the specifics to see if it's worthwhile. The Hertz Corporation, the most recent to change, is replacing its drop - off fee with an extra $14.92 - a - day charge that applies to cars returned within_a certain distance of the pickup point.

The additional fee mounts up over a long rental but can be a big saving on a short hire. ***

Many children have problems with sight, speech, hearing physical mobility and mental development that could be corrected if discovered in time. Parents who suspect that a child may have such a problem are urged to seek help immediately, rather than wait. To point out early - warning signs, the Easter Seal Society provides a free brochure: "Are you listening to what your children may not be saying?" Send a self - addressed, stamped envelope to: National Easter Seal Society, 2023 West Ogden Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60612. *** Smokeless tobacco -- chewing tobacco or snuff -- has had a resurgence, especially among young men. It may seem like a safer, more manly alternative to smoking cigarettes, but it actually poses a greater risk of oral cancer than smoking, warns the American Academy of Otolaryngolory -- Head and Neck Surgery. Smokeless tobacco is associated with malignant tumors in the cheek or mouth, especially in the small cheek hollows of the mouth where tobacco is usually placed. In 1984, oral cancer caused an estimated 9,000 deaths in the U.S. *** Consumers may soon be able to eat pork products without worrying about trichinosis. The Food and Drug Administration has amended its regulations to permit the use of low doses of food irradiation in the treatment of pork to kill the parasite that causes trichinosis -- a serious, sometimes life - threatening gastrointestinal ailment. The amount of irradiation permitted, however, will not extend the pork's shelf life. When irradiated pork comes on the market, it will have to bear a label disclosing that it has been treated. ***

Less Sugar, More Sweeteners Consumers may be developing a false sense of security about reducing sugar in their diets, says a TAMU AES nutritionist.

More people are reading food labels to see if sugar is listed among the top three ingredients, says Dr. Alice Hunt.

They tend to see these as high - sugar products and avoid them.

Hunt says there are two problems with this shopping strategy.

Mostly for economic reasons, food manufacturers are using many other forms of sweeteners, such as corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, honey, molasses, sucrose, dextrose and maltose, she explains. So consumers need to recognize all forms of sweeteners when they are listed on labels.

Food manufacturers may also use more than one type of sweetener in a food product, says the nutritionist.

This means the sweetners may be placed far down on the ingredients list, Hunt notes, because smaller amounts of each type are used.

But if all the different sweeteners used in the product were added together for on listing, it would be near the top of the ingredients list, the nutritionist points out.

U.S. Department of Agriculture figures show that the percapita consumption of sweeteners is going up, even though the consumption of sugar is going down, reports Hunt.

-Since- these-sweeteners have -about the same calories as sugar, weight conscious consumers should watch their intake of these products just as they would be concerned about sugar, she advises.

delicious barbecue beef and sausage, tasty vegetables and btautiful pastry. I have never seen so many appetizing foods on one table.

I think Youth Counselor Sister Dorothy Pflughaupt did better on the youth auction than she had anticipated. Many nice items were auctioned.

The "Womanless Wedding" was a huge success! As I stood to the side observing the performances of the wonderful people acting out their parts to the height, I could hear the sound of tremendous laughter and people really enjoying themselves. I knew then that we had achieved what we had set out to do to get more people involved and to have fun.

When I get the pictures developed, I will have them published and, at that time, I will tell you who the actors were and what part they played.

Steve Steiner, the original bride, had to withdraw from the play due to back problems. However, he did get to come and view part of the performance. He had surgery the following Monday and, Steve, we wish you a speedy recovery.

While a comical wedding cake was cut and refreshments were served, the Lodge 88 Choral Group and Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra performed in their usual superb manner. The sound of the music and singing inspired some of the people to dance.

I have many, many people to thank for helping me in preparing for this day. I hope each of, you will accept my deepest and most sincere thanks. The attendance was great and I want to thank you all for coming out and supporting your district.

New Tabor Plans Fall Festival

District V Fall Meeting And Family Day The meeting began with the presentation of the flags and the Pledge of Allegiance by District V Flag Bearer Jefferey Barcak and Lodge 88 Flag Bearer Vincent Hegwood and the National Anthem and Czech Anthem sung by Sister Helen Hegwood, accompanied at the piano by Sister Estelle Kelly.

The business before the membership was to elect the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director, which is done every three years. Brother Herbert Nowotny, presently our director, has chosen not to seek re - election. He has served in this capacity for many years and his devotion, time and hard work have made the rest homes a true success. We commend Brother Nowotny for his years of outstanding performances in the name of the SPJST and the Rest Homes.

Brother Louis Hanus was elected by

acclamation to this position of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director. We know Brother Hanus will do a conscientious job for us.

We had the privilege of having distinguished guests representing the Supreme Lodge, Brother Sidney Kacir, our legal advisor, and his lovely wife, Dorothy. It is always a nice treat for us to have one of the officers with us on our special days.

Brother Raymond Skrabanek spoke to us briefly on the Czech Heritage Society and how some of us with a little free time interested in Czech heritage could volunteer in helping to compile information on Czech immigrants into Texas.

Sister Mary Ann Kieschnick, president of Lodge 142, has graciously volunteered their hosting the spring meeting. .

Family Day began with a dinner of

Dear Members: Lodge 17, New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting September 1 with all officers present.

The Kolache Festival was discussed and we decided not to have a booth.

The Youth Club had three first places at State YAD. Congratulations!

We voted on direct billing and it passed, therefore, in the future (approximately January 1987), we will be getting our bills directly from Temple.

We had some new members who we welcome to our lodge; namely, Shawn Leslie, Therese and John Kucera.

We decided to have a Fall Festival October 19 of this year; yes, that's a SATURDAY. We are going to try, it this year and if it, doesn't work out we'll go back to Sunday.

Bud Petty and Donnie Suehs will be head cooks for the barbecue; Martha Trcalek and Betty Suehs will be co chairpersons for the kitchen.

The Youth Club books were audited and found to be in order.

Our next meeting will be October 6th.

25, Ennis September Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: The September Lodge 25 monthly meeting was called to order Thursday, September 12, at 8 p.m. by President

James Whitfill. Brother Garry Mizell led the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Whit fill complimented Ernest Haskovec for doing a good job mowing the lodge grounds and he also complimented Johnnie Krajca for the success of the Barbecue Cookoff and Domino Tournament. Danny Zapletal and Chris Divin were first place winners and will represent Lodge 25 at the State Tournament in Buckholts, Texas at Lodge 15, October -12th.

Second place winners and runners - up were Jimmy Valek and Johnnie I. Krajca.

Recording Secretary Kay Kovar read the minutes of the last meeting and these were accepted as read. After the Executive Board meeting minutes were read, we had a rather lengthy discussion about whether to pay the bar mixers. It seems that Brother Joe is having a hard time getting mixers for the dances. Since it was resolved earlier in the year to pay no one this year, this will be brought up again next year. It was voted to have the building exterminated for roaches every 45 days. St. John's Junior/Senior Prom will be held here in April and it was voted to let them have the use of building free (since several in the class are members of Lodge 25). They will cleanup afterwards. It was voted to replace the metal moulding around the dance floor; it has loosened and is dangerous; two people have recently tripped on it. This is to be done as soon as possible since this was resolved earlier in the year A motion was made by Johnnie I. Krajca to award each domino tournament sponsor $30 to help with expenses on the trip to the State Tournament. This was passed.

Kay Koval- read a lengthy correspondence from Supreme Lodge on several different topics. One that concerned our lodge was the direct billing. The members voted to go to direct billing. Also, Simmons Company advertising "Roots of Czechoslovakia" bumper stickers.

The Ennis Chamber of Commerce asked for a donation for their "Civic Auction." The members voted not to donate. Also, the Ennis Jaycees sent a flyer about their "Game of Ennis."

The members voted not to participate.

Treasurer Emma read her report.

The $5,000 loan has been paid off as of September 1st. The expenses were rather high because of the electric bill as it is every summer.

Danny Zapletal asked permission to hold the American Legion Youth Horse Shoe Tournament on the lodge grounds. Members voted yes.

On the sick list are Cathy Trojacek and Agnes Honza. All members wish you both a speedy recovery!

A new member for this month is Donald Wayne McCallum. Welcome!

Brother Van Fowler thanked the membership for the use of the hall for their Telico Fire Department Benefit.

The sale was a big success!

A motion was made to adjourn with 23 members present.

On the entertainment calendar: September 28 -- Eddie Ray & the Polka Dots. This is a very good band so make plans to attend this dance and bring all your friends, too.

October 5 -- Fool's Gold. This is a favorite band for this area so you know their music is great. Keep these dates in mind and let's all get together at both of these dances.

Winners Of Lodge 25 Named SPJST Lodge 25 in Ennis held its annual barbecue cookoff, horseshoe tournament and domino tournament Sunday, August 25th. After the competition a dance was held. The next tournament will be held the 4th weekend in August 1986.

Winners in the barbecue cookoff were Johnny and Scott Dlabaj (father and son), 1st place; Raymond Starek and Frankie Joe Patak, 2nd place; David and Terry Zhanel, 3rd place; and Tom Valek and Charlie Bouska, 4th place.

Winners in the domino tournament were Jim Holahan and Ronnie Honza, 1st; Willie and Raymond Matous, 2nd; and Stanley Matous and Rammy Jurica, 3rd.

Winners in the horseshoe tournament were Gary Tidwell and Mark Sanders, 1st; Raymond Matous and Robert Mikel, 2nd; David and Richard Castillo, 3rd; and Jerry Rejcek and Mark Zabojnik, 4th. Most ringers went to Raymond Matous with 33 ringers for the, day. All these winners were awarded trophies for their awards.

In the 42 domino tourney, Chris Divin and. Danny Zapletal were 1st place winners and will compete in the State Tournament in Buckholts, Texas, October 12th. Good luck to you!

72 Sets Date For Meeting - Social Lodge

Lodge 88 News

Houston

We have several people under the weather and we wish them all a speedy and complete recovery. Della Miksch had a growth removed from her foot September 6 and after hobbling around for several days, she is now doing very nicely. Edwin Klessel came home from the hospital Friday after spending 12 days battling extremely low pressure and pneumonia. He says he's feeling pretty good but is very weak. Steve Steiner, one of our youth club parents, is scheduled to have back surgery this week. Pearl Hilsher had gall bladder surgery August 26 and two weeks later was travelling around like nothing was wrong. I don't think she was back bowling yet which is her favorite pastime. John Kadlecek is at Heights Hospital having had a slight stroke. He should be coming home in the next day or so.

Shirley Sue High passed away September 7 after a long illness.

Shirley will be remembered as an active Birthday Club Sister before her illness having served once as their president.

She was buried at Forest Park Lawndale. The Birthday Club under the direction of President Pearl Hanka served lunch to the family after the services. Our sympathy goes to the surviving family.

August 24, Edna and Willie Wehring hosted a picnic at their Watson Lake vacation home in Phelps, Texas. Members of the Lodge Bingo Committee, plus neighbors from Houston and Watson Lake gathered for an afternoon of visiting, games, dominoes, and plenty of good food.

Tom and Clara Jecrnenek drove to Nueva Larado September 4 with their daughter, Patsy Walker, granddaughter, Rene, and two great granddaughters, Rhea and Rachelle.

They spent several days there and Tom reports they had a great time at the border even if the horses took him to the cleaners, again.

Mary Quider, member of the Lodge Auditing Committee flew to San Francisco for a week long vacation with a group from First Methodist Church, July 29th. They toured Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, Nob Hill, rode on the cable cars, took a ferry boatride across the bay and went to the. Fairmont Hotel .for dinner and to view the evening skyline. The Fairmont Hotel lobby is used to film the TV series "Hotel." The last week of September, Mary is planning another trip; this one will be to Seattle, Washington and on over to British Columbia.

Proud Youth Leader Marie Stayton has announced we had three first place winners at State this year; namely, Jefferey Barcak who made a clock, Marlene Migl who submitted a charcoal drawing, and Kelly Sokol in the first placed w hc Science/Education projects.

Congratulations to the winners and to Marie. She has worked very hard this year to make our youth club a first rate club and a fun place for the children, also District V Family Day held September 15 was a very nice day.

District V President Clara Broz held a brief business meeting in the morning and, as soon as that was concluded, lunch was served. The district furnished sausage and barbecue beef and we had a great assortment of dishes furnished by the members of the district. After lunch, the Sokol gymnasts performed and a dance revue

by the Laurie Dance Studios was presented. Then came the "Womanless Wedding." That was a sight!! Louis Hanus, as the jilted lover, cried all during the breath takingly beautiful wedding ceremony conducted by Judge Amos Kadlecek.

Mother of the bride, Johnny Broz, was stunning in a black strapless gown and hat and little flower girl, Mike Trefell, was so cute as he danced down the aisle throwing posies. Jefferey Barcak, Vincent and Vernon Hegwood, little Paul Pflughaupt, Leroy Migl and Jerry Postom, all were glorious in their wedding finery, as was the blushing bride, Larry Pflughaupt. The bride was escorted down the aisle by his father, Orville Simmons and Eugene Barcak sang a lovely version of "Oh Promise Me." Ed Carlock, again, played a very funny Manny while he wheeled the little sister of the bride down the aisle in a wheelbarrow. Ed was the only repeat performer from the last wedding here at Lodge 88. I have mentioned only the Lodge 88' participants, but other members of the wedding party were from Lodges 65, 139 and 172. It was a lovely affair. A three - tiered wedding cake and punch were served to the guests as .the Lodge 88 Concert Band and Choral group entertained for the grand finale of a fun day.

Brew plays Texas The country/western music in the Chandelier Ballroom Friday, October 4th, with the Knights of Dixie appearing Saturday, October 5th.

Both of these bands have a large following here at Lodge 88 so either dance will be an enjoyable event. You are welcome to attend both.

Our lodge meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 8,

by President Mary Ann Kieschnick.

All members and guests stood to recite Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen revealed that all were present except Vice President Nelson Jochen, due to his work schedule; Brother Gus Florian took the vice president's chair for this meeting.

Guide Frank Tumis was also absent.

The secretary read the minutes from the previous meeting which stood approved as read. All officers' reports were read.

Our Sick Committee reported that Frank Mynar, Michael Tumis and Elsie Hermis were on the sick list; all are out of the hospital at this time.

New applicants for August are Maurice Hobratsch and Sabrina Birdwell; Sidon Tumis was the sales representative.

Our Board of Trustees has voted to donate $250 to the Mark Soughter family to practice our fraternal desires.

Mark is a member of our lodge and was in a bad automobile accident 13 months ago and still is in a coma in the hospital. He has improved very slightly.

Capsule prize was drawn for Ray Zienert, Jr. who was absent and missed the $35 prize. Next meeting we will draw for $40. Come out and let's have a winner present.

Door prizes went to Mary Ann Kieschnick, Charlie Petrezelka, Howard Kieschnick and Lula Gambil.

Youngest member prize went to Curtis Kieschnick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kieschnick who won the $5 prize.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m. until second Sunday, October 13th at 2 p.m. Refreshments and delicious spaghetti dinner and salad were served to members. This delicious treat was prepared by the fine leadership of Sister Rosie Tumis. Thank you, Rosie, we all enjoyed it and had fun.

I hope to see more of our members at the next meeting and fraternize with us.

We also had some of our members who flew out - of - state on the big bird recently; namely, Brother Gus Florian, daughter and a couple of grandchildren who flew to California to visit Gus's son who lives there. Gus reported a very enjoyable and busy week. While there they toured the state and also highlighted their trip with a visit to Universal City. They reported this was a great place and much to see and enjoy.

Also, Johnny Tumis, Darlene and sons recently spent 2 weeks of vacation in Nashville, Tennessee. While there they visited with Darlene's parents, the Smiths, and also visited the Harvey Tumis family for a couple of days.

Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by Vice President Brother Don Steinman. Our President Brother Jerry Milan was enroute home from Salt Lake City, Utah and was late.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Brother Steinman.

All the reports were approved as read. Sister Mary Renfro reported on additional insurance sold.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported the youth club really enjoyed seeing the "Enchanted Forest" play and then they enjoyed the feast at Chuck E Cheese.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on the get well, sympathy and birthday cards sent and read a thank you from Sister Patti Gage.

Brother Steinman reported a group of our members attended the 75th anniversary celebration of Lodge 92.

Those who attended the dance said the music was great and they all had a good time. Then Sunday we enjoyed a delicious dinner, an entertaining program, good dance music and seeing a lot of friends. It was great.

Brother Don also reminded the domino players of Saturday, September 21 for straight domino tournament. Brother Jim and Sister Wanda Mason were our winners and we wish them good luck.

Congratulations to Carrie Ann Cleveland. She is president of the Senior Class at Boswell High, and to Brother Emil Milan, coach of the year.

Brother Jerry attended a meeting in Chicago Wednesday and then flew on to Salt Lake City, Utah and joined Brothers Emil Milan, Rome Milan and Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman for the United States Gymnastic Federation National Coaches Congress. They took in some sites which they enjoyed while there.

We extend some anniversary congratulations to Brothers and Sisters Donald and Bonnie Steinman (18 years), Jerry and Henrietta Milan (28 years), Joe and Carrie Milan (41 years). May you all have many more.

Donates To Good Cause Dear Members: A short meeting with 20 members and three guests attended the September 8 meeting at 11:30 a.m. at K - Bobs in Pleasanton.

President Lloyd House called the meeting to order.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Tillie Valchar; also as treasurer, she gave the treasurer's report which was approved as read.

President House reported the next meeting place (also at K - Bobs, December 8 at 11:30 a.m., Pleasanton). Henry Mann made the motion, seconded by Vince Pivsouka.

New Business: Sandra House, daughter of the president and wife, Bettie House, was elated over a $500 scholarship from the Supreme Lodge.

Mary Ermis made a motion to donate $100 to Crime Stoppers, seconded by Vince Pivsouka. Motion carried.

For the December 8 meeting, Tillie Valchar suggested, if a needy family was found, a Christmas donation for help would be made.

Motion was made by Joe Juricek, Jr. to adjourn the meeting, seconded

Fall Events Of Lodge

172, T= saden.1 Here it is September already,, it hardly seems possible -...hat summer is behind us, and summer vacations are now only memories. The children are back in school, and all sports' fans are back in front of the TV every Monday night, so let's turn our thoughts to

some enjoyable time before the rush of the holidays is upon us.

September 28 -- Come spend the evening with the Wilderness, a very fine country and western band. They do an excellent job on all music that is requested.

October 5 -- All country fans should plan on this one evening for the really good sounds of the Highway Country Band.

October 12 -- Al Pierson and his Big Band USA will, once again, fill the Grand Ballroom with the sound of a really BIG BAND. Everyone will enjoy this fine music, all of you ballroom music fans need to make plans to attend. Tickets are on sale at the Grand Ballroom at 3609 Preston, advance tickets are $10 per person or $12.50 per person at the door. To reserve your favorite table you need to buy your tickets early.

October 19 -- Lee Roy Matocha, once again, will be here for your dancing pleasure, so all of you Lee Roy fans do come out and support your favorite band.

October 26 -- Texas Brew, everybody's favorite band will be back, so come on out for a great evening of fun.

November 3 -- Come celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of the Grand Ballroom! Dinner from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. and dancing at 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. with music by Just Country.

Adult tickets will be $6, and children under 6 will be $3.

November 8 -- The Original River Road Boys will be performing this last of the Friday, night dances, so let's make this one a real success.

172, Pasadena September 22nd, Lodge 172 hosted a social dinner and dance. This event was free to all Lodge 172 members.

The charge for non - members was $6 and $3 for children. The ticket covered both dinner and dance with music by a fine variety band from Victoria, the Vaneks.

The lodge office is taking reservations for the Al Pierson dance and the New Year's Dance with music by the Vrazel Band. The cost of Al Pierson dance is $10 each in advance or $12.50 at the door; the cost of the New Year's Eve dance is $12.50. Be sure to make reservations for both of these great dances; we, are expecting a large turnout each time. Our office phone number is 487 - 3297.

November 3rd we will be celebrating our anniversary and, that Sunday, will have another fine dinner and dance with music by the Just Country Band from 3 to 7 p.m.

I am sorry to advise the loss of one of our beloved members, Gladys Emmons, wife of Herbert C. Emmons and also Mark Mock, son of Elizabeth Buckanan, who lost his life in a motorcycle accident.

Our sick list is too long and I hope that shortly everyone is home and healthy. Brother Willie Kristoff has been in Herman Hospital for three weeks now . Rena Ordner is still confined to a nursing home and Mike Tanecka is gaining his strength after an operation. Johnny Bronkowski, husband of Louise Bronkowski, is home now from Sun Belt Hospital. We miss Mike at our dances; he is so much help working and chatting behind the bar.

Don't forget to attend our monthly meetings, 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Please come out and take an active part in the function of operating your lodge. We do need more people to be involved and there are many important decisions to be voted on and only you can make them.

Lodge members are busy selling our nice cookbooks and Gold Seal Coupon Books. Proceeds from these two items will go toward constructing a driveway cover for the front entrance to our lodge building. Be sure to obtain these from one of the members or from the lodge office.

Warrenton Plans Fall Activities Dear Members and Friends: Thursday night, September 12th, Lodge 179 held its regular meeting with President Harold Bergmann presiding, who also led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Plans were finalized for a turkey and ham shoot Sunday, October 13th, at 1 p.m. at Eichler's Drive Inn at Carmine. Let's all come out and enjoy the afternoon.

Another fun - 'day is planned for Sunday, October 20th for our lodge members to go on their one - day tour.

This year it will be to the Renaissance Festival near Plantersville, so if you are interested in going along let Warrenton Store know immediately so that enough reserved tickets can be obtained.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and correspondence, and Doris Eckermann gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were accepted as given.

Lodge 183, Mid-Cities September Meeting Dear Members: It has been a long time since I have taken time to write a few lines. It has been a busy summer. After the bowling tournament at San Marcos, Gracie and I traveled to Corpus Christi to visit a couple of days with a cousin and then returning to New Braunfels, LBJ Country, Fredericksburg and the hill country.

Since getting home we have been busy doing the things that should have been done before we left.

The regular monthly meeting was held at the lodge hall Monday evening, September 9th, at 7:30 p.m. with a nice pot luck meal before the meeting. All officers were present and all reports were read and approved.

Three new members, Duane and Angeline Miller and John Huff, were voted on and approved. I would like to take the time to wish you new members a long and happy stay at Lodge 183; the membership welcomes you!

I would like to say that I am sorry that Gracie and I couldn't be at Lodge 92 at their 75th anniversary, but four members of Lodge 183 were there; namely, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees and Pat Sill. They told the membership that they had a good time and had a very good meal. Congratulations Lodge 92 and many more happy and enjoyable years of fraternalism. Robert and Pat Sill told the lodge that they plan to be at Lodge 84 in Dallas for their Czechfest. Gracie and I hope to meet with some Sons of Hermann members at Lodge 180, Saturday.

The dance at Lodge 183 was held Saturday, September 21, with a good country and western band named "Last Call." In October, The Czech Harvesters will be here for a dance so put on your dancing shoes and come out and have a ball at the hall with your friends and neighbors.

Remember, District III meeting will be held at Linden Hall in Waco Sunday, October 27th.

Well, vacations are over, school days are here again; maybe we all can plan to be more active in lodge business for the fall days, socials and dances; also, remember bingo every Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, at 7 p.m. so come out and bring your friends and have a lot of fun.

"Vegetable. I am a human bean!" The other day my friend was trying to make a point with his girl friendi telling her "My college has turned out some great men." Dear Members and Friends: We held our first rehearsal after summer vacation Tuesday, September 11, at 7:30 p.m. with 16 members present. Those singing were Annie Jakubec, songleader, Agnes Schiller, Albina Mikeska, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Emily Stuteville, La Verne Vanicek, Anne Krcha, Martha Klusacek, Calvin Chervenka, Bob and Mary Vasicek, Frank Mikulec, Helen Janacek, Dorothy Pechal and Henry Janacek, the accordionist.

Birthdays were celebrated in September by Della Psencik and Annie Jakubec. "Happy Birthday and many more!

"Happy Anniversary" to Johnie and La Verne Vanicek this month, too, and many more!

Anne Krcha brought a cake to welcome everyone back after vacations and Della Psencik made a special cake for Sister Jakubec so we had good cakes and coffee. Don't you wish you had been at the last rehearsal? Make plans to come every time we meet.

We held the business meeting. Helen Janacek, choral president, conducted the meeting and Emily Stuteville gave the financial report plus the minutes of the last meeting.

Brother Chervenka reminded everyone of the Conversational Czech classes to be held Monday nights, September 23 through November 25 at 7 to 9:30 p.m. He and his wife, Mildred donated a Czech songbook to the Choral Club. It has so many of the songs we sing and a few more we needed words to; and many we haven't heard. Thank you, Calvin and Mildred, we shall enjoy using it.

Brother Chervenka also spoke on the forthcoming sesquicentennial events and Czech Heritage that we should be proud of and keep singing the Czech songs and try to involve the young people.

Our next rehearsal will be Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. Watch the calendar for the dates.

Softball Team Report Of Lodge 84, Dallas SPJST

Thursday night, August 1st, we played Curry Leasing and we won by a score of 4 to 3. Winning pitcher was Mike Moeller who allowed 3 hits, 3

walks, and struck out 6 batters.

Hitters were Ben Downey with a single, Don Jarma wih 2 doubles, Danny Yates with a single, Kerry Goad with a single, Don Lennox with a single, and Paul Bartos, a single. By winning, we advanced to the finals against Adairs for a game Monday night.

We played Monday, August 5th and we lost a heart - breaking game in extra innings. Mike Moeller was, again, on the mound and he allowed 5 hits, 6 walks, and 6 strikeouts; another outstanding job.

Hitters were Don Jarma with 2 singles, Tom Stites with a single, Danny Yates with a walk, Bart Walker with a single, Paul Bartos with a single, and Darrell Clements had a base - on - balls. That meant we came in second place for the ASA Tournament. We won a large trophy for our finish and we qualified for the Regional ASA State Tournament in Ft. Worth. Results of this tournament will be given in my next report.

We are entered in the Summer League of Play and we have 5 teams in our league.

We played our first game Wednesday night, August 7th against the Bandits. We came out on the short end of 8 to 7 ball game. Tommy Yates was our pitcheri allowing 10 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.

Hitters were Tommy Yates with a triple and a single, Paul Bartos with a single, Danny Yates with 3 walks, Bart Walker with a walk, a double and a homerun, Mike Moeller with a single and a triple, Randy Christian with a single and Jerry Manak with two walks.

We played our second league game Wednesday night, August 14th and the old man was the team manager for the night and we beat ADAIR'S by a score of 6 to 5. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher, allowing 5 hits, 1 walk, and had 2 strikeouts.

Hitters for the game were Tommy Yates with 2 singles and a walk, Don Lennox with a sacrifice fly, Tom Stites with 2 walks, Bart Walker with a sacrifice, a single and a bases loaded homerun, and Danny Yates with a single and 2 walks.

This was a fun game' and the highlight was Bart Walker's game winning homerun with the bases loaded to salvage the game for us.

84 Memories Lodge

Dear Readers: Martha (Jez) Taylor and I were approached by Lillie Jarma to write our childhood memories at Lodge 84.

It sounded so easy and like a lot of fun. It was fun to try to remember back to when we were 5 years old. It turned out to be not so easy. This is how we came about writing this booklet for the lodge's annual 14th Czechfest.

I would write a chapter and call Martha to meet me at a fast food place. We would discuss and correct what was written. She would take it home and add on her thoughts and, of course, we ate there. Next week she called for me to meet her for lunch and to see what she had written. This pattern repeated itself for many weeks.

We must have taken notes and eaten at every eating place in East Dallas.

Then came time for the cartoon type

illustrations. This was definitely ,Martha's. department. She is so talented. Good thing, because I cannot draw a straight line without a ruler. It was time to meet to check the drawings. By now our clothes were getting tighter and the booklet was getting longer. We decided it was time to wind up our story of our precious childhood memories.

I am sure there were many more people and events that we did not remember. Those of you and your kinfolks who were not mentioned were by no means forgotten.

After all these years our eyes may be a bit dimmer and our hearing isn't as keen as it was then but in our brain we have these good memories locked in to be used in some distant time. That day we will sit in our rocking chairs and giggle as we re - read this booklet and remember these happy times. We will remember the people who are long gone. These were the folks who made our lodge a reality. That was their dream come true for us. Without them there would not have been a Lodge 84 hall for us to meet in and enjoy the brotherhood .

Now it is time for us two gals to go on a diet because we laughed and ate our way all through the writing.

We hope that those of you who purchased one of the booklets will get as much pleasure out of reading it and remembering as Martha and I enjoyed writing it for you We both want to say thanks to Lillie Jarma for nagging us into writing it, a big THANKS to Ida Schulz, our lodge president, for typing and printing it off and for furnishing the cover and mostly a thanks for her encouragement at the times we felt it was not good enough. Our sincere thanks to Sid and Justine Pokladnik for furnishing the paper on which our story was printed.

Lodge 88 Birthday Club Report.

President Pearl Hanka opened our September meeting with another great insarational: "Strangers Are Friends We Haven't Met." Minutes were read by Secretary Rosalee Kostom and were approved as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies had a good financial report and announced that she presented Sister Emily Bily with our donation to the ALS Foundation.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut reported sending get - well cards and birthday cards.

President Pearl Hanka thanked all ladies who brought food for the dinner after Sister Shirley High's funeral.

Cakes were donated for our luncheon by Mary Schenbum, Bessie Lero and Martha Sacho.

Our cooks for October will be Helen Hegwood, Ardith McClellan, Doris Knapick and Mary Schenburn.

A silent prayer was given for Frank Spacek, Bill Renfro (of Lodge 154), and Louis Svetlik of Buckholts, Texas, who was a brother - in - law to Minnie Ruzicka and Bennie Hundle. Also for the father in - law of Mary Ann Krivanek who passed away. May they all rest in peace.

New members and guests were recognized and welcomed by our members. The new members were Anna Lesikar and Mildred Knopik.

Our guests were Anne Polk, Mary Pavey and Imogene Reaves.

Sunshine Chairperson Lillie McMillen reported on cards that had been sent for illness and sympathy.

Congratulations go to Bernadette and David Holford on the arrival of their new "Bundle from Heaven," Christy Marie Holford. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tesar and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Holford. Joyce Tesar is the proud aunt.

We will be visiting our SPJST Supreme Lodge and Museum in Temple, Texas. We are looking forward to having a good time.

The Ladies' Circle wishes to congratulate SPJST Lodge 92 on their 75th anniversary celebration which was a huge success. We also wish to commend Martha Hubenak and her committee who worked so hard to set up the program for the celebration for a job well done. The hall was beautifully decorated by our manager, Frank Tesar, Jr. and his wife, Joyce, and others who helped.

Ladies' Circle President Florence Greer presented a gift of money to Albert Kabala, president of Lodge 92, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary.

We were proud of our member, Clara Cohen, who did an excellent job as MC for the 'Gay Ninety" style show with models who showed clothes from the 1800s to the present time. Models also showed Czech costumes. Clara brought out in detail garments worn by the models. Everyone enjoyed the style show very much.

Special thanks go to Mrs. Alice Hubenak Lindsey of Weatherford, Texas, sister of Clara Hubenak Cohen, who graciously furnished the clothing worn by the models.

Don't forget our meeting in November is our Thanksgiving dinner.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: At last the rains which brought relief from two months of dry, hot weather in our area have come.

Since my last report, Roy and I have attended the Play - Mor Czech Days in Lincoln, Nebraska and also spent a couple of weeks visiting our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy and three grandsons in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, plus seeing other relatives and many friends.

The September 4th meeting was attended by 33 members and guest, Wanda Goffinett. Everyone enjoyed the fingerlicking chicken that was purchased from the club's fund.

The birthday members were Theodore Bugaj, Josephine Bugaj, Sue Bsxter, Mary Ann Krivanek and Mary Pavey.

Our thanks to member Ann Sustala for the beautiful handmade Strawberry Shortcake doll that she donated to the club to be used for a drawing at the family Thanksgiving dinner. The second prize will be a handmade tissue dollholder donated

by Genevieve Earle.

Only dues for the year 1986 will be collected at the Thanksgiving dinner.

The cutoff date for membership dues is March of the ensuing year. More details in regard to the family dinner will be in my next report.

The hostesses for the October 2nd meeting will be Annie Belota and Geneva Hennessey.

We extend our congratulations to Gordon Hubenak who was promoted to vice principal at Trimble Tech High School in Ft. Worth where my son, R.L., teaches high school math.

Our congratulations also to member Bernadette and David Holford who became proud parents of a baby girl, Christy Marie, August 26, 1985. The proud grandmother and president is Marie Tesar.

We also extend our congratulations to Donna Rose (Morbitzer) and John Thompson, who were married September 21, 1985 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Grandmother of the bride is Rosie Zalesak.

A once - in - a - lifetime experience was expressed to me by Rudy Dolkos, who had a 15 - day tour of Central Europe and Czechoslovakia with his cousin, Charles Dolkos, who lives in Alexandria, Virginia. The highlight of his trip was seeing the old homestead where his father was born. Rudy even surprised himself by winning a polka dance contest at a social function at the International hotel in Prague.

We express our sincere condolences to Evelyn Spacek and family on the loss of her husband, Frank, age 64, who passed away August 21, 1985.

Our condolences also to Mrs. Eva Krivanek and family on the loss of her husband, Victor Krivanek, who passed away August 25, 1985.

Many of us are members of SPJST Lodge 92 and we wish to commend Martha Durham and her committee for two days of well - planned activities at the 75th anniversary celebration of SPJST Lodge 92 held September 7th and 8th.

He was a very popular man, and the lodge was honored to have him take time from his busy schedule to attend the celebration and to make a well received talk including a few sentences in the Czech language.

The weather was damp and wet outside Sunday, September 15th, but the spirits were not dampened inside

Thirty members and eight guests attended our September 5 meeting.

Guests were Alvin Elsik, Bob Zvolanek, Roy Alholm, Phil Reames, Charlie Kocian, Julius Podhrasky, Arnold Vrla and little Julie Podhrasky, granddaughter of Julius and Bertha Podhrasky.

President Ann Zvolanek opened the meeting with the pledge to our flag and then recognized Libbie Slovak, Vlasta Jurcik and Mildred Chervenka who have not recently attended our meetings.

Secretary Alice Roberts gave an excellent report. Adelle Vlk read the treasurer's report in the absence of Vicki Kohn.

Announcements were made regarding the Czech Cultural meeting September 30, Fraternal Council meeting September 12 at the Catholic Czech Club and Kobase Festival September 28 and 29 at the Catholic Czech Club.

We discussed the trip to Lake Ray Hubbard and the ride on the Texas Queen Boat. We will go when it turns a little cooler so be at the next meeting and a date will be chosen.

We voted to have our Christmas Dinner/Party at the Sokol this year rather than go out to a cafeteria. The dinner will be catered. We also decided not to exchange gifts so that more time could be devoted to socializing.

Lydia Alholm had tickets to sell for a project the Friendship Club of Ft. Worth will have. First prize will be a Strawberry Shortcake Doll which Lydia brought to show us. She also invited everyone to attend the 75th anniversary of SPJST Lodge 92.

Liddie Pavelka brought large plant baskets to show us and orders were taken. She will bring the ordered baskets to the next meeting.

Bessie Kalich announced SPJST Lodge 84 will have a bazaar and dinner, September 15th.

Bertha Podhrasky announced the Sokol Awards/Dinner, September 22nd.

Mildred Chervenka, representing the Dallas Czech Singers, had song books for sale.

Now for the exciting news regarding our members and their trips, etc., our President Ann is having to slow down a bit due to the cast she has on her leg due to a fractured knee cap.

Agnes Mach and husband, Frank, recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to two wonderful people!

Helen Vrla, Jr., and Vlasta Jurcik gave us a nice report on the highlights of their recent trip to the Folk Dance Festival in Germany.

Evelyn Salac told us about the cruise she took to Alaska on the Cunard Princess.

Bertha Malik cruised to South Hampton. England on the Queen Elizabeth II. From London, England

she rode the Orient Express to Paris, France. She flew from London back to New York on the Concorde.

Josephine Kankrlik enjoyed going to Red River, New Mexico. Adelle Vlk visited Colorado. Marie Fitz was in California. . Bessie Kalich went to Michigan to attend a Polka Festival.

Lydia Alholm and Mildred Chervenka told us about their trip to Lincoln, Nebraska where they attended a Polka Festival. Libbie Elsik was in Nebraska.

After hearing all about these trips our members took, I got the traveling fever so Saturday, September 7, Suzanne Novak and I flew to San Francisco, California where we spent 7 days visiting with my two aunts and doing a lot of sightseeing and shopping; really enjoyed the cool temperatures. My aunt has an apartment on the 9th floor in the Towers so we had a lovely view of the entire city.

Marie Fitz received a letter from the Society of Distinguished American High School Students (Nation's leading high school honorary) stating that hey granddaughter Peggy Lynn Fitz was chosen to represent Poway First Baptist Church in the Society for the year 1985. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a student while in high school. Only those students demonstrating academic excellence, leadership in extra curricular activities or service oriented in civic affairs are chosen to receive this honor.

Our members and their families have really been involved in activities lately. That's just great! There is always something to share with one another.

Keep your calendar near by and mark the upcoming events. The Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas is the one big event coming up Sunday, October 6th. Do try and make this one.

Franz Alois Grossman September 2, 1985 was the 135 birthday of Franz Alois Grossman. He and his wife contributed much to the development of this community, especially the rural area.

Franz was born to Josef Grossman and Barbara Drozd Grossman, September 2, 1850 in Verovice, Moravia, Czechoslovakia. He married Marie Bartos, daughter of Karel Bartos and Johanna Minar in Frenstat Franz and Marie left Czechoslovakia in 1872 to seek a better life in America. They landed at-the port of Galveston, Texas. They came to the northeastern part of McLennan County, Texas. They settled in the St. Martinsville (Tours) area. They lived on a farm a short distance south of the present site of St. Mary's Cemetery.

Franz Grossman could speak three languages: English, Czech and German. He was an interpreter for the district court in McLennan County.

He helped other emigrants obtain their citizenship papers and other legal matters. His picture was hanging in the courthouse-when the courthouse was remodeled, it was lost.

Franz would catch the Texas Central railroad train at Ross and ride to Waco. He served as trustee for the

library church school in 1880. He and his family were members of the Catholic Church.

Marie Bartos Grossman was a competent nurse. She delivered many babies, set broken bones, and ministered to th \ sick. Marie made 9 trips back to Frenstat, Moravia to study medicine and to bring many relatives and friends to Texas. The Grossmans provided shelter for these emigrants until they found a place to live and a job.

Frank Grossman, Jr. was born August 13; 1880 in Frenstat while his mother Marie was there on a trip;when he was 9 days old, they boarded a ship to America.

In 1895, Franz and Marie bought a farm of 320 acres north of Ross. They

also bought several other properties.

Three of their grandsons live on this property; namely, Henry Grossman, Robert and Erwin Cinek.

Marie Bartos Grossman died September 10, 1904 at age 48. She was a large woman. A special coffin was built for her burial.

Franz Alois Grossman died in Seattle, Washington., 7 March 1911 while visiting his son, John. He was 61 years old.

Franz and Marie are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. Franz has a Woodman of the World Monument shaped like the trunk of a tree.

There were over 3,000 participants representing 35 countries MARINE FIELD PROGRAM 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. from all over the world; 2 from the Program Coordinator - David Podhrasky United States, the Clogg Hoppers Brad Durham from Houston, Texas and us.

Our group BIG TEX STAGE PROGRAM 3:30 to 4:30 P.M. was No.59 of between 85 and 90 Program Coordinator - Arnold Vrla groups. It took all evening before all Master of Ceremonies - Roy Alholm were introduced. We had no idea when Brave Combo of Denton we left Dallas that there would be such Polka Music SOKOL - Southern District a large number of participants in the Special Gymnastic Number SOKOL - Fort Worth festival. It was a very outstanding Team Tumbling event and we were thrilled to be there part of it!

Day October 6 At Dallas State Fair

In Heidelberg, on the Nekkar River, we visited the ancient "Pink Castle," which was in ruins but still boasted of the largest wine keg in the world: 49,000 - gallon capacity! Of course, to be courteous,we sampled some of the local wine. The city was like a movie lot with its narrow, hilly cobblestoned streets, ornate buildings and wrought iron signs, and tourist - filled shops laden with local treasures. Our hotel Hollaender Hof was very typically German with its wood frame beds and flat cotton mattresses with large, square feather pillows and and thin featherbeds for cover. Father Henry Drozd of Ennis, Texas, now stationed in the U.S. Armed Forces in Germany, met us for dinner. He is second cousin to Eugene Parma.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4 After a very delicious continental breakfast (including the typical hard rolls we would have each morning), several of us attended 9:30 mass at a 12th century, monastery. The procession was led by 12 cloistered monks who chanted the mass in Latin.

This was a very moving experience, although we all could have done without the wooden kneelers and all the incense! The monks sustain themselves by running a dairy farm at the monastery and selling their products to local residents and by providing counseling.

We continued on along the Nekkar River through towns with difficult German names (hard to remember and pronounce), passing castle after castle along our route. We detoured through the beautiful village of Eberbach at the gateway to the Oldenwalt Forest and could see local residents picking blueberries, raspberries and mushrooms on the hillsides. The Nekkar River was a very busy commercial water route and barges and locks dotted the river. Hiking trails, soccer fields, campgrounds and neat gardens could be seen lined up along the river. Lunch break was in Waldenberg consisting of liver dumpling soup or maultaschensoupe (ravioli - type pockets filled with beef and spinach). All along our route, the beautiful villages with their flower filled windowboxes, picturesquely painted houses and acre after acre of vineyards with quaint chapels in the fields kept our cameras clicking. Most homes were of timber and stucco - type exterior with slate roofs with snow braces on them. The highways were excellent with no speed limit. Truck traffic is prohibited from 10:00 Friday night to 6:00 Sunday evening,

Restoration was seen everywhere, with the State spending millions of dollars over the years to reconstruct their fine castles, churches and homes.

Even though we had not reached Munich, the site of our International Folkdance Festival and Competition, we were greeted in the small villages by huge, 30 - foot high gold banners hanging from the windows and buildings, advertising our coming events.

At 4:30 we arrived at our "home for a week," the Hotel Haus International in Munich. The metropolitan style "brought us down from the clouds" after traveling on the Romantic Road.

After settling into our dormitory - type room, we left for one of the highlights of our trip, the famed Hoffbrauhaus Beer and Dance Hall. There we had dinner consisting of German sausage, dumplings and sauerkraut, and many, many very large steins of that good German beer. We met many of the groups from other countries with whom we would be competing the next day.

Reunions Kulhanek Reunion The 13th annual reunion of the Antonio and Celestina Kulhanek descendants will be held Sunday, September 29, 1985, at Sts. Peter and Paul dining hall in Frelsburg, Texas. A Holy Mass for deceased family members will begin at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

From The District Youth Counselor District II Six Flags Trip The trip is all set and •we have 5 Arrow Trailways buses; one Arrow bus and the. SPJST Taylor youth bus will be at the Taylor Shopping Plaza to bring most of the Taylor and Elgin people to Temple. I am sorry we cannot have another bus in Taylor, but we were short of money so I am asking the smaller children to PLEASE share seats from Taylor to Temple and get as many as possible on that bus and a few of you will have to drive your car to Temple. When you get to the Temple Mall in Temple, there will be 4 buses waiting and everyone will have a seat.

We plan to leave Temple at. 7:30 a.m. so please try to be on time; we cannot hold up the,buses waiting on one or 2 people.

At this moment we have 227 youth and adults registered for this trip and I am happy so many are going; 14 of these youth are from Lovelady so we seem to have about 16 seats available.

This is Tuesday, September 17 so, by the time this is printed we may not have any. If you are interested, you may give me a call.

You may bring a snack or your lunch and everyone is responsible to purchase their own food and drinks.

Memorials went to the John Wade Cystic Fibrosis Fund, and the Theresa Dobecka Scholarship Fund. The youth club had a Tupperware Party August 9; they sold around $500 worth of Tupperware items. Our top sales person was Jimbo Hromadka and the rest of the club members worked hard to make this a good sale. My thanks to each of you for working and helping our youth club.

Our youth members had homemade ice cream and cookies; everyone enjoyed this activity. Thanks to those who brought homemade ice cream; it sure was good.

August 16, 23 and 24 a few of the Lodge 6 members and youth baked kolache, strudels and bread for Westfest booth at the lodge and some members baked at their homes. Many thanks to all of you for helping the club. It makes me feel good that all of you care. Thanks, again, to all of you for baking, working at the booth and cleaning up afterwards because it is a lot of hard work. This year was our 10th year having a booth at Westfest.

We also had a decorated vehicle in the Westfest Parade. I want to thank Roy and Dee Dee Hutyra and the youth club members for decorating and being in the parade for the club and Lodge 6.

A few of us attended State YAD August 18 in Temple. Shirley Dobecka placed second in Home Arts in ages 15 - 17, Lanette Hykel also placed second in Constructed Items (ages 15 - 17).

Among the 10 top youth in the State were Shirley Dobecka, Kevin Dobecka and Tammi Dobecka. Shirley Dobecka was the recipient of the State Scholarship for $1,000. We are proud of you, Shirley!

The State Queen is Lisa Reznik of Lodge 84, Dallas in District III; and State King is Michael Marek of Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje in District VI. Congratulations to all the winners at State YAD! The youth club plans a tour to Six Flags, October 13 and Bowling Party, September 29th.

Our Christmas Party will be December 1; we also will have a meeting. More on this later.

The youth members are selling Christmas cards, a lot of other Christmas items, also stainless steel knives (sets or any way you prefer ); let the youth or youth leader know.

Youth Lodge 49 Of Rowens Met The youth club met Wednesday, September 11, 1985 at the Lodge 49 hall for their regular monthly meeting.

ALEXANDER J. TRLICEK, a native of El Campo and a resident of Stafford, Texas, who was killed during a robbery attempt in Houston, Texas.

Brother Trlicek was manager at Gabby's Restaurant.

Brother Trlicek was born July 21, 1962 to Woodrow and Margaret Trlicek.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 14 at St. John Catholic Church in Taiton, at 2 p.m. A rosary preceded the burial mass. Msgr. J.A. Petru of Taiton and Rev. Pom J. McReazy of Stafford officiated.

Interment followed in the Taiton Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Woodrow and Margaret Trlicek of Stafford; 3 sisters, Barbara Valchar of Stafford, Rebecca of Houston, Annette Chamberlain of Missouri City, Texas; a brother, Michael Trlicek of Needville; maternal grandmother, Julie Bilek of Taiton.

Brother Trlicek was a lifelong member of Lodge 30, Taiton.

John Buri The Houston youth was selected as one of the winners in "Oscar Meyer Astro's Baseball Clinic" held at the Astrodome, August 17, 1985.

This contest entitled John to meet on the playing field with the Houston Astro players who gave pointers on playing baseball. He was also entitled to 2 free tickets to the Astro vs Cincinnati Reds' game that night.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m.

Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge Cecho Moravan No. 106, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother GILBERT B. MUELLER who passed away Tuesday, September 3, 1985, in Fayette Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

Brother Mueller was owner of Mueller's Florist. He was a member of Noon Lions Club, American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge, Shriner's Arabia Temple of Houston, Woodmen of the World and Hermann Sons. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European and Pacific Theaters.

(Rok po zahájení povstání zasloužil o české koledy, jelikož v roce ve staré vlasti proti Habsburkům a tím 1658 vydal překrásnou sbírku začátku 30 leté války.) V roce 1637,ve vánočních písní a koled jménem svých osmnácti letech, vstoupil do Jesličky. Některé spisy Bedřicha jezuitského řádu, byl vysvěcen na Bridela byly opět vydány v třicátých kněze a stal se po studiích pak pro­ letech našeho století, za první fesorem retoriky a poetiky. Sám byl Československé republiky. Báseň Co záhy znám jako výtečný · stylista. Po Bůh? Člověk? byla vydána Josefem · skončení 30 leté války (v roce 1648) Vašicou v Praze v roce 1934,J. Vašica řídil v letech 1656 až 1660 pak v roce 1936 vydal Život sv. Ivana a akademickou jezuitskou tiskárnu v v roce 1938 knižně české literární Klementinu v Praze, kde v této době baroko. Vilém Bittner vydal roku 1937 vydal většinu svých spisů, ať již Slavíček·vánoční. originálů anebo překladů. V roce 1665 Bedřich Bridel vyrostl, studoval, byl poslán svým řádem k misionářské pracoval v duchovní službě a literárně práci na Boleslavsko, Čáslavsko a do působil během 30 Jeté války a ji východních Čech. F. Petrarca f!lidič našrouboval zpětná zrcátka a vyjeli jsme. Autobus zabočil do ulice Na Františ­ ku. Děti .a dospělí se po něm divali, protože mu na bocích chyběla některá okna; místo nich tu stojí nápis: Městská knihovna. Jel dál pražskými čtvrtěmi. Někteří se na nás do kabiny řidiče i usmáli; asi prohlédli, že tento autobus vozí uvnitř několik set okének a že je i celý vlastně jednfm velkým oknem.

"Navštívil nás jeden mimo výpůjční hodi­ ny," říká knihovnice. "Všechny hodnotné knihy by neunesl, a tak vzal tranzistorové rádio, které jsme si tu přes noc nechali.

Proto schováváme ta zrcátka." ·

PRVNi ZASTÁVKA. Na nádvoří n. p. Pra­ ga v Praze-Vysočanech čeká hlouček lidí v montérkách. Knihovnice vybírá průkazy a vpouští čtenáře k regálům ve vytopeném· bibliobusu.

"Pane inženýre, dnes jste si pospíšil vaše Jižni Město máme jako druhou štaci, takže bychom vám neujeli," zdraví knihov­ nice muže, který se na ni usmívá.

"Jsou čtenáři," říká žena za výpůjčním pultem, "kteří se neobtěžují k regálům a vy­ máhají Párala, Hrabala, Wericha ... prostě, co se nosí. Jednou jsem toho Hrabala v re­ gále měla, žádostivou čtenářku upozornila, a ona, že ho nechce, když je prý z volného výběru. Ten pán k nim ale nepatří. DRUHA ZASTÁVKA - sídliště Milíčov na Jižním Městě. Přékvapuje mě, posádku však vůbec ne, že prvním návštěvníkem je dítě-klučina. Rozevlátý přiběhl .z protější školy, knihovnice si ho nevšímá, kluk pře­ šlapuje před výpůjčním pultem. Je tady po­ prvé, jmenuje se Ivánek Lavický, chodí do druhé třidy ...

"Ti indiáni by udělali z bibliobusu kůlnič­ ku na knihy, kdybych je nezkrotila už při vstupu," poznamenává knihovnice a vzpo­ mene na chvíle, když si chtělo dva svazky Malého Bobše půjčovat najednou padesát dětí a maminek. Ones je čtenářů málo -mrzne, počasí a· návštěvnost spolu souvi­ sejí, a tatínkové se dívají na olympiádu. ,.Máme sedmnáct stanic. Ctenáři někdy nechápou, že dvěma bibliobusy městská knihovna jen pomáhá těm čtvrtím Prahy, kde místní knihovna není, nebo je přetíže­ ná. Ostatním nezbývá, než se s náročnější­ mi požadavky obrátit na naše sídlo na Sta­ rém Městě. První bíbliobus odtud vyjel v ro-

Přichází mladá žena. Z tašky vytahuje přečtené svazky, Neff se jí líbil nejvíc.

Knihovnice doporučuje další tituly, ale žena · se svěřuje, že od té doby, co se manžel vrá­ til z montáže, není na čteni čas a tašku teď potřebuje mit prázdnou na maso. Další v pořadí - babička - se ráda projde, shání pro vnučku povinného Robinsona. ,,Ivane! Ty nevíš, která je levá ruka?"

Chlapec zase stojí u nesprávného regálu, vytáhl z něho knihu. "Ukaž, co si chceš půj­ čit?" Je opět nesvůj, váhavě slabikuje ná­ zev: ,,Budeme mít děťátko." Kluk a já zůstá­ váme rozpačití. .Když já už nechci být sám ... chtěl bych mít bráchu. Když ma­ minka koupit bráchu nechce ... chtěl jsem se· mrknout, co bych ... " Knihovnice se hravě dostává ze zapeklité situace.

Přenos z olympijských her skončil, řidič zařazuje vrácené knihy, je zde veden jako pomocný knihovník, Když pak zametá po­ dlahu, říká mi, že by sí trcufal i na půjčová­ ní. Věřím mu to. Nevěřím však, že by se mu čtenáři svěřovali jako této ženě za výpůjč­ ním pultem. A lidé se svěřovat potřebují.

Projíždíme Prahou, někteří z chodníku se na nás usmívají, jako že vědí ... Jsme první na světě s pěti knihami půjčenými za rok každému obyvateli, včetně novorozenců.

ZASTAVUJEME POTŘETI, tentokrát na domovském stanovišti ve Valentinské ulici v Praze 1. Řidič vyšroubovává zpětná zrcát­ ka. Bíbliobus zítra musí na dalši dvě sta­ nice.

Od roku 1954 pečuje o historické knihy v zámeckých, hradních a palácových knihovnách Knihovna Národního muzea v Praze. Za více než 30 let péče o historické unikáty vydala ve spolupráci s Československou akademií věd řadu soupisů rukopisů: Rossika 16.-18. století, speciální soupisy ze zámeckých knihoven v. (continued from page 12.) compartmentalized into sections such as "playwe,ar "; her clothes don't simply hang there, but stand like soldiers at crisp attention. â&#x20AC;˘ Posted on her wardrobe doors are lists of accessories to purchase; she seldom buys on impulse and sews most of her clothes. Having grown up in Texas' cattle towns, she is partial to leather goods; she isn't big on baubles, but has a penchant for texture hose.

It takes a while before a newcomer is accepted; it's as though you have to prove yourself.

"I am compulsive about my clothes, but I try to be creative in my dressing. I am an organized person who makes lists, yet I like to improvise. My standards are high," she admits with a smile, "but that's what makes me comfortable."

She's apparently always been comfortable with the idea of excellence. As the elder sister to three brothers, she assumed the mantle of responsibility as a youngster and early decided to make nursing her career.

By the time she'd earned her RN's cap in 1976, she'd found her special niche in psychiatric care.

Not long after leaving Houston for Chattanooga in 1981, Marsha joined the staff of Tri - County Hospital. She served as a staff nurse in the psychiatric unit there until the Mountain View Center opened its doors in Fort Ogelthorpe last year and Marsha came on board as director of nursing.

"I'm very content at Mountain View," she tells of the handsome private facility whose patients include those with emotional disorders and problems of substance abuse. "It's challenging work and it's been wonderful to see the hospital grow from its original five patients to its current 60 - bed status."

"I learned to sew when I was in the sixth grade and have been making a good deal of my clothes ever since " she recalls. "It's time - consuming, but it's also very relaxing. I can just turn off everything else when I'm sewing."

(If the Houston Oilers are playing, she won't turn off the TV, however; she's remained a faithful fan who watches their gridiron feats while she sews) Many o f Marsha's colleagues/classmates were responsible for her being named to the Best Dressed Women list. Admiring the pretty, yet professional suits and matching textured stockings she sports at work, they nominated Ms. lanneillo for the honor and monitored each stage of the competition as closely as a fluctuating blood pressure's readings.

"I think it was a great compliment to me that they nominated me," says Marsha with justifiable pride, "and I'm tremendously flattered to have won."

She takes pains to insure that her slender silhouette will flatter that award - winning wardrobe, too; a diehard devotee of Jane Fonda's workout program, Marsha not only practices the exercise routines each day, but regularly presents copies of the tapes and records to her friends as well.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
