Annie T. Baethe Celebrates 96th Birthday Sister Annie Theresa Baethe, a to Houston where Mr. Baethe was in longtime member of SPJST Lodge the construction business. Dale Carnegie *** One of the newest Texas laws (Seat Belt Law) requires drivers and front seat passengers to "buckle up;" it went into effect September 1st and is to be given a grace period through December 1st. However, after December 1st, violators will be fined between $25 to $50. The seat belt law applies to all ages. Individuals who are at least 15 and are in vehicles equipped with safety belts will be cited for violations. Drivers will receive tickets for allowing a child, 4 to 15, to ride in the front without a seat belt. Children under 4 already are covered by a law that requires drivers to secure them in a child safety belt.

The law has two exemptions: Postal service employees and persons with a written statement from a licensed physician saying they are unable to wear seat belts.

When the seat belt law, Senate Bill 500, was debated in the 69th Texas Legislature, objections included that it was unenforceable, but many law enforcement officials do not agree and say the law, will not be ignored. It is the law. It becomes an officer's responsibility to enforce it while on duty. *** Many people from afar came to attend the 10th Westfest which concluded its two - day celebration August 31st and September 1st after scoring another huge success. Among the over 30,000 festivaleers (some from native countries) were visiting relatives in the USA and some were exchange students. There were several from Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Germany, France and England who were amazed to see such a large undertaking in such a small community as West.

This year the SPJST members turned out in full force. There were Home Office officials riding in the parade procession, namely, President Howard Leshikar with his spouse and District III Director Sid Pokladnik.

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek brought his spouse to help judge floats. In addition other SPJST members came from San Angelo, Victoria, Wichita Falls; and, of course, those who were in the cultural program from larger cities.

The SPJST Lodge Jaromir No 54 sponsored a float which placed second.

Participants in their authentic Czech costumes, along with the musicians, brought out the Czech flavor and got the spectators in a festive mood. The West Czech Dancers under the direction of Maggie and Ernest Grmela achieved first place on their float.

Most participants on both floats were from Lodges 6, 54 and 66. Youth Clubs from Lodges 6 and 35 also entered their special decorated vehicles in the parade. For more information and photos refer elsewhere in this edition.)

The Czech Singers of Dallas brought their large group of SPJST members and other Czech Society members to sing Czech songs under the leadership of Bob Liska. For their project they (the singers) compiled a Czech song book that can be purchased from any member of the group or by contacting Calvin or Mildred Chervenka. (Some of these singers were also in the parade.)

It was a pleasure to see so many people and we appreciate everyone's attendance at the cultural program location. Everyone's enthusiastic applause was a reward to the participants in the over 100 degree temperature. We look forward to seeing everyone in 1986! *** Let Us Keep the Torch Lit! Time has a way of changing physical features and that great old lady, the Statue of Liberty, is no exception. People all over the country have her best interests at heart and are working hard to restore her and keep her alive and well.

Local units of many fraternal benefit societies are conducting a wide range of fund - raising events at the grass roots level to help the restoration of perhaps the most revered national monument in the country. Events such as dances, bike - a - thons, ski - a thons, dinners, spelling bees, auction sales, bake sales, bingo, pig roasts, chili suppers, to name a few, have been popular fund - raising events.

Our SPJST has set the period from September 1, 1985 to December 31, 1985 for raising funds for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in our local lodges, youth clubs, etc. Put your ideas to work and tell your fellow members about them! *** Ellis Island Oral History Project.

Nearly 17 million immigrants entered this country through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. More than 100 million of us can trace our heritage back to them.

As part of today's nationwide campaign to restore and preserve the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the Ellis Island Oral History Project wants to make sure that the- story of those immigrants -- their hopes, fears, joys, losses, accomplishments and courage -- is recorded and preserved. The foundation plans to interview 200 people who either came through Ellis or worked there between 1892 and 1954.

After initial responses by mail, researchers will screen respondents by telephone to determine whom to interview. They will be requesting information on: Country of origin Exit port Year of immigration and age at time Date of birth Duration of stay at Ellis Island Recollections of the experience, the voyage and life in America.

After reviewing the candidates and making their selection, the researchers will visit the participants to conduct extensive, in - depth interviews.

Uncorrected Minutes Of District II Fall 1985 Meeting At Lodge 29, Taylor The meeting was called to order by President D.I. Bohac at 2:30 p.m.

Monica Machu and John Wuensche presented the colors, and the pledge was said by all.

Roll call of officers indicated all present except Second Vice President Al Giarrusso.

District Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky apologized for the late start and asked for volunteers to run the games.

He said that the youth had just returned from summer camp, that they had a good time, and expressed thanks to the volunteer help and thanks that

there were no serious injuries. Brother Frank announced that the youth would leave at 2:40 p.m. for putt - putt golf for this afternoon's activity. He suggested that the district reschedule the fall meeting for 1986 to a later date due to some conflict with the late camping date.

Sister Dorothy Pechal, District II treasurer, announced a balance of $1,305.94 in the General Fund.

Special guest Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge president, was called upon for a few words as Home Office representative to our meeting. He indicated that Brother Rudy Sefcik

had called to give his regrets that he could not be present. He had strong words of praise and commendation for the kids and parents at the summer camp and thanked the district officers for what was to be a good meeting.

Dan Balusek, Rest Homes director, pointed out that the homes were in sound condition; $1,000 had been donated by the Houston Lodge 88 to each home. The money so donated is used for smaller items for the comfort of the people. He encouraged gifts from other lodges.

Our District II Director Willie E. Kohutek took the floor and thanked everyone for their attendance. He brought good news that Jul y sales showed a premium increase of $6,000 over last July, that non - medical limits were raised, that convention history books were still available, that direct billing was catching on, also that the domino tournament was being well received and that current loan rates 11'/ percent, were: Home -Commercial -- 12'' percent and Annuities -- 9 3/4 percent. . He too commended everyone involved with the summer youth camp.

Following the roll call, President Bohac asked for volunteers for the spring 1986 meeting location.

Leslie Gustafson of Lodge 18, Elgin volunteered that lodge as site for the March 16, 1986 meeting. Having no one else to indicate their desire to host the meeting, Lodge 18 was selected.

Under new business, there was a motion made by Ronnie Reiger to change the fall 1986 meeting date from the third Sunday in August to the third Sunday in September. Seconded by Don Balusek. Motion carried.

Lodge 51, Olinger - Reminder This is, the reminder I promised you, calling your attention to the forthcoming lodge picnic to be held at the Ellinger C of C Recreation Hall, Sunday, September 15th.

Once again, allow me to explain the rules: There will be NO charge to the members of this lodge. Members of the household of the member who reside in the same home and who are NOT SPJST members will be asked for a $2 donation.

Outsiders, visitors and/or inactive members (those who do not have their local dues paid up) will be asked for a $3 donation.

We will be on hand about 10 a.m. to begin the registration and at 12 noon we will have what is known as. the "Happy Hour " when we may obtain free refreshments. At 12:30 p.m., we will serve barbecue chicken dinner with all the trimmings; after the meal we will hold a brief business meeting.

Lodge 84, Dallas August Meeting Dear Members: We had a good attendance at our monthly meeting last Monday. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Correspondence included letters from the Westfest, Lodge 92, Internal Revenue Service and the Supreme Lodge.

Reports by the following were: Entertainment -- Brother Novak gave his usual good report. Softball -- Came in second in its place and a trophy will be presented. Youth Leader Petr reported the lodge youth who won first place in District HI, were preparing for the State competition. Congratulations to Lodge 84 Queen Vicky Gerlich and Lodge 84 King Charles Pokladnik who were crowned during the Princess Ball held in July.

House Chairman Salac said help will be needed to install the bar cabinets September 8; if you are able, please do. Thanks to Brother C.L. Olsen for fixing the refrigerator box behind the bar.

The Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meets September 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Czech Club with WFLA #401 as hosts.

Czech Culture report by Sister Petr stated all plans were going well with the Czech Day at the fair. Circle OCTOBER 6TH and come!

I guess everyone read Calvin Chervenka's report about Joe Sykora and Johnny Hubacek winning ribbons in playing the accordion way out there in Nebraska. Several bus loads of Texans; young and .not so young made the 4 - day trip to dance, listen and compare the music of those other Czechs. All vowed to go again next year, it must have been great fun. Are you planning to go?

Now for the big news aboUt our CZECHFEST, September 15 starting with doors opening at 11 a.m. and then "vesely cas" from 12 to 1:30 p.m. half price keg beer, cold drinks will be served. Enjoy the dinner of roast beef and country sausage with trimmings as well as dessert and coffee or tea for $5 adult and $2.50 for child.

Lodge 87 Temple Meeting SPJST Lodge 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, August 9, at 7 p.m. with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

The meeting was called to order; Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The lodge remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member Emil Reznicek.

Old and new business was discussed and various reports were given.

The lodge held a discussion concerning the state domino tournament to be held September 21st.

The business of painting the lodge hall was discussed, also.

Get well wishes are extended to John Coufal and all members convalescing.

Herman Liebscher has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at Sam Houston Hospital in Spring Branch here in Houston.

Friday, August 30, the Men's Club hosted a dinner for their spouses. They served a steak dinner catered by Edna, Willie, Linda and Gary Wehring.

President Ed Miculka says the club works hard, they play hard and they eat good. The oldest club member, Tom Jecmenek, and the youngest, Ernest Anders,were recognized during the social. Tom was presented a million dollars in phony money for his next Las Vegas trip and Ernest received a baby bottle filled with his favorite foaming beverage.

Our exercise classes start Monday, September 16 at 7 p.m. Sounds like it will be a large class and should be lots

of fun. If you have any health problems, please check with your doctor first. He may tell you to go very easy at first.

Czech language classes begin that same Monday at 7:30 p.m. and will be held every Monday except on our monthly meeting nights. If you're interested, come to class the 16th and register.

Lodge 180, Burleson Meeting As I prepare this report and all vacation plans are past, the children are back in school, and the weather should be cooler, but isn't, it is time to settle down and make plans for our next meeting to be held September 17. at 7:30 p.m.

Our last meeting was well - attended and all reports were approved.

Our sympathy to the families of Sisters Evelyn Spacek and Mary Renfro on the loss of their husbands.

I must report on a wonderful Labor Day weekend. All of my family and lots of friends were invited to spend a lovely weekend at Giddings, Texas on the ranch of my nephew and his family, Otto John Simmank, Jr. We all went Friday and returned Monday.

All 9 of my sisters and brothers were present; lots of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends were there.

Saturday we had a fishing contest, with prizes going to winners and the losers. Saturday night there was a fish fry with all the trimmings and about 50 people present. Sunday there was a brisket, chicken and sausage barbecue dinner with lots of other goodies and about 65 people present. In the afternoon there was a birthday party for my brother Otto Simmank of Columbus, Texas, with a huge birthday cake and several freezers of homemade ice cream. What else could anyone ask for? Thank you, Otto, Jr. and Mina for a lovely weekend, all the work, and time put into showing us a good time.

Our get well wishes to all who are convalescing. We also would like to express our condolences to Brother Randy Wicker on the loss of his grandmother. May she rest in peace.

The attendance prize was won by Louis Grochaske and the meeting adjourned to pie and coffee.

The KCs came to play bingo Tuesday evening, August 6th and 27th, 1985, with the residents. The residents reported a fine time.

Monday afternoon, August 5, Elizabeth Miller with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Monday afternoon, August 12, the residents enjoyed homemade ice cream.

Thursday morning, August 22, residents Tony Ondracek, Agnes Perkins, Hilda Cole, Martha Stuchly, Fritz Fuchs, Mary Ann Spezia, Louise Janc and Emma Tielke; also Activity Director Martha Marx, and Volunteer Paul Legendre went to Houston to view the large and old buildings in downtown Houston. On the way back Paul treated us with ice cream.

Everyone had an enjoyable time.

Happy Birthday celebrants for the month of August are residents Sally McCauley, Frank Richardson, Tony Ondracek and Rosie Zdunkewicz and staff, namely, Viola Kutej, Audrey Jenkins and Ozella L. King.

The birthday party which was held • Friday afternoon, August 304included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordion and the piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres and SIS of the Immanuel United Church of Christ provided the cakes. Volunteers Edith Schulz, Bertha Ross, Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortman and Frances Muzny served the cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area that give services and communion and to the volunteers who did services in the home to the residents for the month of August.

Austin CC. To Teach Czech The Austin Community College will be offering Conversational Czech classes this fall. Conversational Czech (CEU 322) is designed for the student who has little or no background in the language but who desires to communicate in everyday Czech.

Emphasis is on vocabulary building and proper pronounciation of Czech.

It is a non - credit course in the Continuing Education Sector of the school.

Classes are to be held at Reagan High School in the evenings frorm 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday evenings, September 17 through October 31, 1985. The course will cost $42 and instructor will be M. Winnett.

Reagan High School is located in the northeastern part of the city, at 7104 Berkman Drive (a few blocks east of IH 35). It is at 'th tt ittersection of Highway 290 East and rkman Drive.

Draws Diehard Polka Fans

By L. Kent W olgamott It's a Bohemian Woodstock: three days of peace, love and music.

But the Pla - Mor Ballroom's Annual Czech Days doesn't feature rock bands. It's a Polka Fest.

The three - day festival attracts about 2,000 people each day. They come from across the country to the ballroom five miles west of Lincoln. A license plate survey Saturday afternoon found 15 states represented --- from California to Virginia, Texas to Minnesota.

The Polka Fest is one of the biggest and best in the country, according to polka fans interviewed at th Pla - Mor Saturday.

"This one is tops," said Romy Tikalski of Brillion, Wisconsin.

"They've got some very good bands out here, especially the Czech singers."

Attended all 12 Like many of those at the Pla - Mor, Tikalski is a return visitor to the Polka Fest, but he has the distinction of having attended all 12 of the events.

"We came here by accident, Tikalski said. "Thirteen years ago my wife and I were driving down the highway in a convertible with the top down andfas we drove by, I saw the sign said Polka Fest. Before we hit that the railroad tracks (just east of the ballroom), I'd made a U - turn and we were back there. We haven't missed one since."

The Pla - Mor does its best to maintain the festival's high quality, keeping the crowd filled with duck dinners and kolaches and entertaining them with the best polka bands it can find.

"We've spent a lot of time and effort in making this as good as it is," said Pla - Mor manager Gene Benes.

"One of our best points is the music.

We spend a lot more money on the music than some of the other festivals do."

Two bands play constantly at the festival, one inside the ballroom and one outside under a large tent erected for dancing. There are few breaks in the polka action because two bands are set up on each bandstand, allowing immediate switches and continuous dancing.

Traditional bands orchestras, Traditional polka including trumpets, tubas, saxophones, accordions', drums and an occasional guitar, play the long list of standards, some with Czech singing.

Many at the festival wear traditional polka garb: embroidered vests for the men and matching outfits for the women. The couples make a colorful display as they circle the dance floor.

Sandy Simunek of the Oklahoma Polka Club, who drove 400 miles to Lincoln, said she left her husband working at home so she could attend her 6th Polka Fest.

"I finished working in the field yesterday so I could come up with the folks," she said. "I just enjoy getting to see everybody again. It's just good wholesome entertainment."

In addition to the music and food, polka fans also can buy records and cassettes of their favorites along with clothes, caps and jewelry at stands set up under the tent.

A good time But mostly the Polka Fest is designed for socializing and dancing.

"I enjoy a good time and there's lots of people to visit with here," said 6 time attendee Jeff Maly of Roanoke, Texas.

Benes, who seemed to know most of those at the Pla - Mor Saturday afternoon, said the event is successful because of the people who attend.

"It's festival feeling. The folks out there, if they're not dancing, they're singing," Benes said. "I don't know how some of these older people do it, they'll dance for 12 hours. You see them come in with a cane or it's hard for them to walk, but they get out on the dance floor and all the aches and pains go away."

The festival, which began Friday night, continues until midnight today.

Two of the Polka Fest 's highlights take place today. A Polka Mass is scheduled at 10 a.m., and at 3 p.m. the button accordion contest, with awards for both professional and amateur entries, will be held in the tent.

From The District Youth Counselors District II Camp Report The 1985 camp is now over and everyone had a few days to recuperate.

We hope all of you enjoyed your stay at camp. Those involved would certainly wish to give special thanks to the leaders, assistants and chaperones who attended camp because they took time off from work to help at camp.

They are special people and deserve many thanks. Thank you to all staff people and leaders - in - training who stayed or came to help at the Junior Camp. Special thanks also go to SYD Sue Meadows who was the staff person at archery, helped at ball games, parties and brought water plus equipment to where it was needed.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Youth Leader Gloria Ebner from Granger and Youth Leader Sherry McKenney, with her husband, Don, from Lovelady stayed for the full 7 days. Gloria was in charge of all crafts and Sherry and Don were chaperones for both groups.

We were privileged to have Danny Bouska and his wife Veneta from the Waco area and longtime SPJST members and youth members from the TOlas area. They brought their scuba awing equipment and Danny gave a lecture about the equipment and the danger it causes from improper use.

Then he gave us a demonstration and let many of the youth try the equipment on and use it in the swimming pool. The youth did enjoy Danny's presentation and we all wish to thank Danny and Veneta for taking time to come out and demonstrate the scuba diving equipment.

The river was again too low for us to canoe so the youth had more time for softball, volleyball and hiking. The teens; `favorite was volleyball and the Juniors preferred hiking more. I guess that they figure they can play ball most anytime but cannot go on trail hikes through the cedar trees and up and down the river banks too often, so that was their preference.

District II Director Brother Willie E. Kohutek attended both sessions of camp and also had a long ride on a horse named "Snow." He was impressed with the camp activities and said that was his first time at camp.

Brother Howard Leshikar, SL President, also attended both sessions at camp and spoke to the teenagers about the SPJST and the advantages they have as members of our Society by being able to attend camp, enter YAD contests, also the availability of scholarships through SPJST. 4801. We would like to invite SPJST youth members from lodges in our district who do not have a youth club, especially in ages 6 through 16. This will give you a chance to meet with

your club members and enjoy your day with them. The price for the youth without a youth club or who are not qualified is $10.25 for ages 3 through.

17 unless the youth is under 42 inches tall, the price is $7.95". The bus ride for these youth is free. Adults who wish to be chaperones for 3 or more youth will pay $10.25; other adults must pay $20 each and that includes trip and gate fee. Leaders and chaperones will pay $10.25. Active youth who are qualified will be no charge.

The Taylor buses will leave the Taylor Shopping Plaza parking lot at 6:30 a.m. and will meet with the Temple buses at the Temple Mall parking lot just north of Sears and all buses plan to leave Temple at 7:30

a.m. and plan to leave Six Flags promptly at 6:30 p.m. and be in Temple at the mall parking lot about 9 p.m., and the Taylor Plaza about 10 p.m. We will try to follow this schedule as closely as possible.

The youth leader of your lodge is in charge of reservations from your lodge; other lodges contact me.

Everyone is responsible for getting to the buses and being picked up. No mileage will be paid to anyone. For more information,please contact your youth leader or you may call me.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting September 1st at the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar. The pledge was led by Keith Kresta, and Amy Kresta recited a prayer.

There were ten members and three adults present.

Door prizes were won by Kim Dornak, Marcy Dorotik, Amy Kresta, Lenice Kaspar, Jason Kaspar and Michelle Srubar.

Contest winners included (6 - 9): 1st -- Michael Kaspar, 2nd Lenice Kaspar and (13 - 17): 1st -- Jean Dorotik, 2nd -- Marcy Dorotik, 3rd -Michelle Srubar.

Dear Readers, Our last monthly meeting was held Sunday, August 25, 1985, at Riney Spacek's tank.

President Chelli Fritz called our meeting to order.

Secretary Trudy Krenek gave the secretary's report. There were 22 members, 5 adults and no visitors present.

The treasurer's report was then given.

We decided to have a dunking stand for the Firemen's Picnic.

Our youth leader then told us we should get with someone else and put a skit together, with a craft, for the next meeting.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, September 15th.

The meeting was adjourned by all.

We then had a swimming party, fishing and a wiener roast. In spite of ants and low water, everyone had a great time.

We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Riney Spacek for letting us use their tank and pasture.

Lodge 49 Youth Club Meets The Rowena Youth Lodge met August 14, 1985 at the lodge hall in Rowena.

All officers were present at roll call.

There were 15 members present with 2 guests.

Reports were given on the ice cream sales at the baseball tournament. It was discussed to maybe try some other type of food next year.

It was voted to try to get together a Christmas program for the mother lodge and for a neighboring lodge.

A visit to the local Barrow's Museum with a hot dog supper at members Charlotte and Brent Halfmann's home following August 29, 1985 was planned by the youth club members.

The meeting was then adjourned with a program given by the new Youth Leader Sue Branham on learning to keep your points straight and on what you receive points for.

Mrs. Kennard was a native of Lott, Texas and had lived in San Antonio.

She was a member of Ocker Brethren

Church and formerly taught Home Economics at Lott High School.

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry L. Pomykal 27 July 1984.

Survivors are one son, John Britt Kennard of Mount Calm; one daughter, Kimberly Gold of San Antonio; her mother, Mary Pomykal of Lott; one brother, Henry Pomykal of Red Oak; and one sister, Wynona Williams of Lott.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, August 13, at Hoelscher Funeral . Home in Rosebud with the Rev. James S. Parks officiating. Burial was in the Ocker Cemetery.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 15, Buckholts, Texas, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy, in behalf of our membership, to the family of our departed lodge sister, mother, grandmother and great - grandmother ANNA KUZEL, who passed away Monday, July 29, 1985 at the St. Edward's Hospital in Cameron, Texas after a short illness, at the age of 93.

Sister Kuzel was born Anna Mikulas, daughter of Josef and Rozalie (Hurta) Mikulas, in Rizdka Vsetina 7 November 1892 and was baptized 14 December 1892 in the Brethren Church in Rizdka which is still in use today. When she was 2 years old in 1894 her parents with their 6 children immigrated to America, coming directly to Temple, Texas to settle permanently in the Seaton community. The family were members of the Ocker Brethren Church when young Anna sang in the choir which remained with her as a treasured memory of her youth. She often expressed the wish that Czech hymns be sung at her funeral.

November 25, 1912, she was married to John Thomas Kuzel of Buckholts where they took up residence on a farm where they both continued to live until his death 29 October 1976.

Living alone, she continued to stay in her home on the farm until illness forced her to seek aid in a local hospital where she expired a week later. Sister Kuzel lived in the Corinth community on their farm for over 73 years.

She Was a faithful member of our Lodge No. 15 over 59 years, and the last member of the Mikulas family to pass away.

Funeral services for Sister Kuzel were held Wednesday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at the Marek - Burns - Laywell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts.

Marek - Burns - Laywell Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one son, E.J. Kuzel of Round Rock, Texas; three daughters, Hilda Burtis of Buckholts, Lorene Millican and Irene Rollins, both of Belton, Texas; eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; also two sisters - in law, Hattie Mikulas of Temple and Betty Kuzel of Dallas.

Pallbearers were nephews, Jimmie Mikulas, Jerome Mikulas, Adolph Junek, Buck Jez, Raymond Mikeska and Franklin Martinec.

Our fondest memories will always remain in our hearts of this wonderful mother and homemaker.

May our departed lodge sister rest in eternal peace and may her memory live with us forever.

MILLIE R. MANACK, who passed away Tuesday, August 6, 1985 at the age of 65.

Sister Manack was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Altar Society of the church and several other church organizations. Sister Manack was also a member of Lodge No. 88, Houston where she had served on the Board of Trustees, Audit Committee, Entertainment Committee, and was a member of the Hlahol Dramatic Club.

Survivors include son and daughter in - law, John and Judee Manack of Tomball; grandsons, John Manack of Tomball and Chris Lynch of Fairfield; nieces, Theresa Cercone of Dallas, Marie Taylor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and several other nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania.

Services were held Friday, August 9 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Rudy Beranek officiating. Interment was at Resthaven Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 189, Bryan/College Station, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother JOE NOVOSAD, JR., who passed away August 11, 1985, at the age of 72 years in Bryan, Texas.

Brother Novosad was born in Brazos County, Texas, March 19, 1913, to Joe and Vlasta Blazek Novosad. His father preceded him in death in 1961 and his mother in 1969.

Brother Novosad was engaged in farming and ranching in the Tabor Community of Brazos County. He was married to Mary Matejka.

Brother Novosad originally joined SPJST Lodge 129, later transferred to Lodge 39 and then was one of the organizers and charter members of Lodge 189 - serving as its first president. He received his 50 - year membership pin in 1984. During his tenure of 51 years, Brother Novosad held almost every office available in local SPJST lodges and served as a delegate to several conventions.

Funeral services were held at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, and burial was at Restever Cemetery. Brother Novosad is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Novosad of the Tabor Community; sons Joe Daniel Novosad of Bryan, Roy Novosad of Bellville and Sammy Novosad of Arlington; daughter Claudia Novosad of Bryan; brother Jerry Novosad of Wheelock; and sister. Vlasta Wentrcek of Bryan.

Bartos Named Member Of Chamber's Small Business Council

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of our membership of Lodge No. 47 Seaton express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother FRANK MARUNA 79, who passed away Tuesday, August 20, 1985 at his farm east of Temple.

Brother Maruna was born in Bell County and lived here all his life. He was manager of the Temple Goodyear Store for 34 years and an employee for a total of 38 years.

He resided in Temple and was married to the former Ruth Vaughn May 31, 1940 in Temple.

He was a third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He also was a lifetime member of Lodge 47 having received his 50 - year pin.

Survivors are his widow; one daughter, Patricia Maruna of Temple; two sisters, Bessie Jez of Temple and Christine Leego of San Antonio.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

The 65 - member council, consisting of business volunteers from across the nation, makes policy recommendations to the Chamber's Board of Directors, which sets official policy of the business organization.

The council also advises the chamber and its board on the needs of small business members, and assists the chamber in advancing its legislative and political action priorities.

The Small Business Council's members are leading small business advocates who represent a variety of business and industry positions. Mr. Bartos has served on the board of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce as vice chairman, president of the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce and Greater Dallas Planning Council.

Bartos, Inc„ a leading supplier of ventilation, air purification and noise control products, was organized in 1964 and now employs 33 people in 3 offices.

As a Small Business Council member, Bartos will be working with the U.S. Chamber's Washington staff and their regional staff in Dallas to promote the free enterprise system and make the chamber's small business views known to members of Congress and the National Administration. Americans buy about 17 million used cars every year -- a process that should become a bit easier now that the Federal Trade Commission's new used - car rule has gone into effect.

Used - car dealers must place a large sticker called a Buyers Guide on each car. While consumer - protection groups say that it has been watered down from the original proposal, the FTC rule does require information about warranties and other items, such as whether you may have an inspection by your own mechanic. The agency explains that about half of used cars are sold "as is," which means the dealer has no responsibility once you drive off the lot. The sticker has a box that must be checked to show this. At least eight states and the District of Columbia currently forbid this type of sale and require dealers to sell with implied warranties.

For cars with warranties, dealers must state, on the sticker, whether it is full or limited and what percentage of parts and labor costs are covered, and describe, in detail, what parts of the car are covered and for how long. A full warranty must be transferable to another owner, cover all charges -such as costs of returning the car to the dealer -- and give you the choice of a replacement or a full refund if the dealer is unable, after a reasonable number of tries, to correct the problem. Anything less is a limited warranty.

You must be told whether a service contract is available and its details. Be sure to check, cautions the FTC, that you are not paying for something that already is covered by a warranty.

The rule covers all automobiles, light - duty vans and light trucks bought from a dealer -- including new car "Demonstrators." It does not, however, apply to transactions between private individuals.

If the dealer makes any promises about the car or repairs he will make, have him put them in writing on the Buyers Guide -- which you will keep.

This sticker becomes a part of our sales contract and overrides any contrary provisions in the contract.

You can get help from the FTC in Washington or from its regional offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Seattle.

Features Lange Signs With UMHB Randy Lange, a 1985 honor graduate of Hearne High School, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the University of Mary - Hardin Baylor Crusaders. Randy reported to the campus August 25th for freshman orientation, with classes and fall baseball training beginning later that week.

Randy played three years of high school baseball for the Hearne Eagles where he received honors as an outstanding centerfielder in District 23 - AAA. Randy's parents, Monroe and Ann Lange, and his younger brother, Ricky, reside in Hearne.

Randy is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Davenport and Mr. and Mrs. Julius Lange, all of Rosebud.

Randy is a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone.
