Osteoporosis, which causes thinning of bones and often leads to debilitating fractures, afflicts some 15 to 20 million older Americans -- mostly women over 45. Lack of calcium plays a big part.

The month of September appears to begin with lots of good entertainment and fellowship in the northern and southern parts of our SPJST area.

Check your listings in this issue and select your choice for recreation. The host lodges always appreciate your patronage.

District meetings are also scheduled for the fall activities. The Bulletin Board designates dates and host lodges.

When you crack an egg to cook for breakfast and find the egg white cloudy, is the egg spoiled? Not at all, says the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Cloudy egg white means the egg is fresher than usual. The cloudy appearance is harmless and will disappear within hours if the egg is left at room temperature.

During these steamy days of summer, keep in mind that the combination of heat and humidity can be more uncomfortable than the thermometer seems to indicate -- and even dangerous to your health.

Usually at high temperatures, the human body normally cools itself through the evaporation of perspiration. But humidity interferes with this process; apparently temperatures may run 15 to 30 degrees higher in urban areas with their vast, expanses of concrete and asphalt.

Heatstroke is a severe medicai emergency. Get the person to a hospital immediately because delay. can be fatal. ***

Now that the hurricane season is in full blow, persons who live in danger areas may find a tracking chart useful.

The Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory is offering free copies of its centennial edition that covers the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. Send a self - addressed envelope with 39 cents postage to Hurricane Chart, PO Box 101 - W W, East Milton, Massachutts 02186. ***

The summer - thunderstorm season is when the risk of flash floods is at its highest, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Flash floods kill an average of 200 Americans per year, and more than half of those deaths are auto - related. Motorists are advised: Don't drive on flooded roadways or past safety barriers into flood waters.

Don't try to ford areas of unknown water depth. If a car stalls in rising waters, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground because you could be swept away. ***

The simplest advise may be the best in avoiding burglaries while you are away on vacation. More break - ins occur in the daytime than at night, says the Insurance Information Institute, and in 44 percent of the cases entry is through an unlocked door or window.

Make a thorough check of your house before you leave, including the basement, attic and garage. Alert a neighbor -- or a watch patrol if your neighborhood has one -- to keep an eye on things.

-SP JST The tax advantage that lets shareholders in qualified public utilities receive dividends in stock rather than cash -- an annual exclusion of $750 for individuals, $1,500 for couples filing jointly -- ends this year.

Still, shareholders should think twice before getting rid of the stocks. In the first place, a year - end flood of sales could push prices down. Also, you should remember that reinvested shares must be held more than one year from the date of the 1st tax sheltered dividend to qualify for long term capital - gains treatment on profits. ***

Alvin Community College Czech Classes The fall semester classes in Conversational Czech will begin September 9 at Alvin Community College. The classes will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Each student should be registered 24 hours before the first class.

Class In College Station Czech

For children, wearing reflective material on clothing while walking or bicycling at dusk or after dark can mean the difference between a safe journey and a trip to a hospital emergency room, notes the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Accident and Poison Prevention. Such material on jogging suits, jackets, Halloween costumes, backpacks and bicycle helmets increases children's visibility by as much as 175 to 760 feet and could cut night - time pedestrian deaths by approximately 25 percent, the committee advises. ***

Beginning Czech class will start this month in College Station.

Registration will be September 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Oakwood Middle School in College Station.

Tuition for the course is $17.50 plus a $2 registration fee.

Classes will start on September 17 and will last for 6 weeks from 7 to 9 p.m.

Schedule Of District V Family Day The day will begin at 11 a.m. with a brief meeting which will include the ELECTION OF THE REST HOMES DIRECTOR. If you plan to run for this position, please be present at the meeting.

Dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m., the district will be furnishing the meats, drinks etc., and you are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert.

At 12:30 p.m., the entertainment will begin, starting with the District V youth auction, performances by the Sokol Gymnasts, Lorr ie Dance Studio, Lodge 88 Choral Group and Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra.

The "Womanless Wedding" will be presented with participation of members from some of the lodges in the district. Afterwards, refreshments will be served.

I do hope you will make plans to join us for a day of fun and fellowship.

VII Fall Meeting District

Corpus Christi Lodge No. 79 will host the District VII fall meeting Sunday, September 22, 1985 at the SPJST and Sokol Hall on Kostoryz. A schedule of times and events will follow.

All District VII members also note that Al Pierson will be playing for a dance at SPJST and Sokol Hall Saturday night before our meeting if anyone would like to make a weekend of it in Corpus Christi.

Lodge 4, Halletsville Meeting Dear Members: Our lodge held its annual Family Day Sunday, August 11 at the American Legion Hall, in Hallettsville.

At noon a delicious beef stew dinner with trimmings was served with Vice President Annie Vahalik giving the meal prayer.

A short meeting was held after the meal with lodge President Linda Mikush presiding. She welcomed everyone and introduced our visitors from the Supreme Lodge, namely, District VI Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta of Victoria.

Director Vanek gave an informative and interesting talk to the members.

It was voted by the members not to hold a September meeting due to the Vsetin social that day. There will be two birthday cakes at the October meeting; one for a member with a birthday in July, August or September, the other for a member's birthday in October, November or December.

President Mikush thanked the committee and everyone who helped with Family Day including those who

brought food that was served with the meal. She recognized the following committee chairmen: Kitchen - Evelyn Holy, Stew - Erwin Holy, Tickets Helen Zabransky and Hilmer Galetka, Refreshments - Henry Muenster and lErwin Holy, Entertainment - Patsy and Helen Zabransky arid Annie Vahalik.

Co - Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej and the youth club then announced the winners of their money - making project. They were Michelle Webb, Johnny Zak, Marcie Appelt, Elo Sklar and Tramer Woytek.

Door prizes given by the lodge were won by Mrs. Susie Kovar (2 lawn chairs), Bennie E. Orsak (2 lawn chairs) and Mrs. Henry Klekar (stuffed animal).

Door prizes of SPJST articles given by. Director Vanek were then presented to Mrs. Bennie Orsak, Albert Kahanek, Jr., Toni Galetka, Julius Galetka, Evelyn Holy, Kathy Zak, Bennie J. Orsak, Albina Spanihel, Edwin Galetka and John Zak. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing games provided by the lodge and visiting, refreshments were served.

The day was a success and enjoyed by all who attended.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 13 at the Grant Building, beginning at 2 p.m. as usual.

28, East Bernard Reschedules Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: This is to remind everyone that the September meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be this Sunday, the 8th, in the, lodge hall. At present there is no change in the agenda and it stands as mentioned in last week's letter.

Some advance information on the October and November meetings as of this writing. The October meeting will be held Sunday, October 6,which is the regular scheduled date. The November meeting, however, has been rescheduled to the second Sunday, November 10, because of the District VI fall meeting being scheduled November 3rd.

40 Informative Meeting Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends: The monthly meeting of El Campo Hillje Lodge 40 was called to order by President James Kulcak at 7:45 p.m., August 21st. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and we stood for a minute of silence, in honor of our departed members.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers. Brother Bill Goerig was absent. All other officers and trustees were in attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were read and corrected.

A side - by - side refrigerator freezer was purchased and is now in use.

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all accounts and bills paid. As usual we are in fine shape.

Youth Leader Vlasta Bartos reported that the youth club participated at the State youth finals.

We were so very pleased to hear Michael Marek will be the new State King. The youth will be furnishing door prizes at the LeeRoy Matocha

dance, September 22nd. President Kulcak was invited to address the youth at their next meeting. We congratulate Reporter Kimberly Kacal (youth) and other youth members on their letters to the Vestnik; that is how we stay informed!

Brother Frankie Vanek is doing research on insurance for the hall and will report next meeting. Bids on the parking lots are still being taken. The Building Committee was given the "Go Ahead" to workout details and accept the best bid.

District VI President Ardis Bacak reminded us of the November 3rd meeting in Victoria.

Members commented on how much they enjoyed reading the Vestnik. The variety of articles are most interesting and informative.

Brother Benny Reck was given the "Go Ahead" to buy a post board bulletin board for the hall entrance.

This secretary was glad to see the summer end! Farmers and their families, vacationers and students will be back to their routines and I am looking for an increase in attendance.

You, who have missed some of the meetings have also missed the fellowship and friendship that goes along with the get - togethers.

51 , Effinger Reminder

Lodge

This is the reminder I promised you, calling your attention to the forthcoming lodge picnic to be held at the Ellinger C of C Recreation Hall, Sunday, September 15th.

Once again, allow me to explain the rules: There will be NO charge to the members of this lodge. Members of the household of the member who reside: in the same home and who are NOT SPJST members will be asked for a $2 donation.

Outsiders, visitors and/or inactive members (those who do not have their local dues paid up) will be asked for a $3 donation.

We will be on hand about 10 a.m. to begin the registration and at 12 noon we will have what is known as the "Happy Hour " when we may obtain free refreshments. At 12:30 p.m., we will serve barbecue chicken dinner with all the trimmings; after the meal we will hold a brief business meeting.

Please tell your neighboring members and try to notify me if possible whether or not you will attend. Up to this date there are very, very few who have notified me.

Remember, we will NOT mail out notices.

Home Lodge 63 To Meet Sweet

Lodge 63 Sweet Home will hold its regular monthly meeting and social September 15th, 1985,at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home, beginning at 1:30 p.m. A short meeting will be held, followed by the drawing of door prizes and someone with a birthday in July, August or September will win a birthday cake baked by Earline Zabransky.

Games will be played after the meeting and then a lunch will be served. As usual, the lodge will, furnish the liquid refreshments throughout the afternoon but everyone is asked to bring some food for the lunch.

We are hoping to see all our members and friends September 15 at Sweet Home.

66 Holds Regular Meeting Lodge

Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, August 18 at 2:30 p.m.

President Orsag called the meeting to order. There was no formal presentation of the flags because the flag bearers were at the State YAD. The pledge and lodge motto was recited by members present.

The roll was called by Joe Pruitt.

Kay Owen, Dorothy Warren and Otto Hanus were absent. They attended YAD in Temple.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Sister Pruitt read a letter of commendation from Howard Leshikar for the contribution to Jeff Warhol. A letter was also read from Albert Kubala, president of Lodge 92 with details and times of events of the 75th anniversary celebration to be held at National Hall. She also had some brocbures concerning Westfest.

Brother George Shilling gave a good report of the Board of Trustees' meeting held August 7th.

Sister Libbie Parma reported that the youth club i5 27 years old this year.

She told of the many accomplishments that have been made through the years. She then thanked Arthur Langlotz for a $25 check from the sale of cans. President Orsag then presented her a check in the amount of $50.

Dorothy Shilling gave the Entertainment Committee report. In September our lodge will be 75 years old. For the September meeting the ladies are asked to bring a covered dish. The committee will furnish a cake decorated with the lodge emblem.

Our lodge will hold the District HI fall meeting in October. The ladies are asked to furnish pastries for the this occasion. For early arrivals, there will be coffee and homemade kolaches.

The Fraternal Committee report was given by Sister Jeanette Smith. She read a thank you note from Jewel Warhol for the help the lodge has given her grandson Jeff. She reported that Jeff was now at home and that his last bone marrow test had been negative.

She read a note from Shelly Dangland with thanks for the contribution she had received.

There was no money to be given at this time, so the four recommendations she had received will be carried over until next month.

Sister Nors reported sending baby congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Clark. Sympathy cards were sent to Marcella Kucera and Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Gaidusek. Get - well cards went to Mrs. Bernie (Evelyn) Gebala and Bill Nors.

We had 7 new members. They are Susan, David and Gregory Joe Kofnovec, Katherine E. Rylee, Larry R. Rylee, John S. Gariby, Ronald Hall and Carolyn Gibson. Brother Emil Hanus made the motion they be accepted. The motion carried.

Brother Pauling reported on the 42 and domino tournament. Those playing 42 were Otis and Emma Ceska, Leslie and Glenna Dunagan, Leona Nors and Ruby Orsag, Weldon and Rose Galler. Also Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek, Bennie Engelke and Kathy Holder, Hilda Macha and Darlene Engelke, and Bonnie Pruitt and Louis Macha.

The winners were Otis and Emma Ceska. Runners - up were Weldon and Rose GaIler. Brother Pauling presented awards to the Ceskas and Gainers.

The domino tournament is still in progress. Good luck to all contestants.

Brother Pauling then thanked Ira Niswanger and Dan Nors for coming out and opening the bar for the players.

Jeanette Smith reported that the Dept. of Human Resources had a meeting, which she and Ray Orsag attended. The Family Outreach program was explained by Sandra Martin. She asked for volunteers to work in this program. Sister Smith said if anyone was interested to let her know before September 1st.

Libbie Parma reported that the lodge was organized 79 years ago. The hall was dedicated August 19, 1955. It is now 30 years old.

The door prize winner was Rose Leos.

Those celebrating birthdays in August were Rose Leos, Madeline Webb, Gloria Locke, Frank Miller and Mary Urbanek. The cake was brought

by Larry Yates.

There were 66 members present.

Christi To. Host District VII Meeting

Corpus

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi met for their regular monthly meeting August 15, 1985 following a covered dish supper.

All officers and honorary President Frank C. Sacky were in attendance.

There were 27 members and one guest present and also a good representation of our youth club.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Brother Henry Strimiska was observed.

All officers' reports were in order and approved. A thank you for our $50 donation was read from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home by Secretary Munson.

Our youth leader reported that the youth had an outing at the river this summer and are now working on a charitable project. Three of the members represented Lodge 79 and District VII at State YAD. They are Stephanie Rebecek and Christi and Cheryl Majek.

Final plans for the District VII fall meeting. which Lodge 79 is hosting were discussed. There will be food available for lunch at a nominal cost and activities are planned.

The members approved the donation of $100 to the National Huntington's Disease Association this month and Milly Elzner noted that she had acquired a manneqiun for the museum which she and Brother Jerry are donating.

Our covered dish supper was such a success and so well attended that it was voted to hold another one prior to our election meeting December 11th. Each member is also asked to bring a small gift designated male or female to be

given tt3 the Rest Homes for Christmas.

The activities coordinator reported on how well heart transplant patient Terry Kalenda was doing. Our lodge had donated to this fund earlier last year. Terry is a local boy from Robstown area.

Director Thelma Hrncir talked to us about the new happenings at Home Office and gave us some information on different insurance and savings plans.

The door prize, donated by Frank Sijansky, was won by Frank Veselka.

We have a door prize each month donated by the previous month's winner.

Our sick list includes Brother Frank Sijansky who had minor surgery but is home and doing well and also Mammy Tiemann.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Dear Members: The meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek at 7 p.m.

Brother August Teykl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Bill Foytik who passed away in August.

We were very pleased to have our Director Jerry Prochazka and wife, Delores; we are always glad to have visitors; please come, again.

On our sick list this month was Lillie Teykl; she had minor surgery and spent 3 days in the hospital. I am happy to report she was at the meeting and looking fit as a fiddle.

It was voted to install 3 more wall and 4 ceiling fans in our hall to make it more comfortable for our patrons.

There was a dance for singles planned for August 30th.

The door prize winners were Mary Werner and Delores Prochazka.

Delores donated her prize to our special fund account.

Our next meeting will be at 7 p.m.

District Five Family Day is drawing near. President Clara Broz has planned a fun day. The Lodge 88 Choral Group under the direction of Tim Kostom will perform with the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra under the baton of Director Rudy Dybala. The "Womanless Wedding," an all - male satire on the traditional wedding ceremony, is going to be hilarious.

Come and see if you can recognize these "fellows" in their wedding finery. The gymnasts from Sokol Houston will appear and The Lorrie Dance Studio will perform several dance routines. The meeting starts at 11 a.m. with dinner being served at 11:30 a.m. so the performers will have plenty of time to get beautiful. The district is furnishing barbecue beef and the members are asked to bring a covered dish. Election for the District V S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Director will be held at this meeting.

The first step in the domino tournament is over and the championship teams from Lodge 88 are Joe Miksch and Robert Grissom for straight dominos and Gene Barcak and Adolph Jurica in 42. First Vice President Clara Broz was in charge of the playoffs held Saturday, August 17th.

Harley and Viola Cox spent a two week vacation in Canada. They flew from Houston to Calgary where they enjoyed the beautiful Canadian Rockies around Banff, Lake Louise, and the surrounding area. August 3rd, their daughter, Bonnie, was married to Bob Parrott in the Presbyterian Church in Banff. A wedding dinner was held at the Banff Springs Hotel following the ceremony. Harley and Viola then went by train to Franklin, Manitoba to attend a reception given for the newlyweds at the home of the groom's parents. Bob and Bonnie honeymooned in Canada and Niagara Falls, New York and are now at home in Houston. Bob is employed at Schlumberger and Bonnie is self employed in the public relations industry. Bonnie was very active in the lodge youth club for many years and was SPJST State Queen in 1967. Also attending Bonnie's wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eubank and their son. Little Brooks Krejci Eubank acted as ring bearer during the ceremony and Jeannette was Bonnie's matron of honor. All are Lodge 88 members and I'm sure Bob Parrott's name will soon appear on our list of new applicants, making this a 100 percent SPJST family.

The Texas Brew plays in the Chandelier Ballroom Friday, September 6th, and The Ellinger Combo Saturday, September 7th.

That's a good variety for the weekend.

Come on out and enjoy the cool relaxing atmosphere. Bring your own bottle -- beer and everything else is available from our bar staff under the management of Bar Manager Joe Miksch. See you there.

142 August Meeting Lodge

Sunday, August 11, our monthly meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Kieschnick.

Roll call of officers by Secretary Jochen showed 50 members and guests were present.

At 2 p.m. all members present stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read by Secretary Alice Jochen. Minutes stood approved as read without any adjustments or corrections.

All officers' reports were read.

Under correspondence.the secretary read a letter from District V Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt thanking our lodge for donation for the District YAD dinner held July 28, 1985. She also reminded our members of the September 15th District V Family Day at Lodge 88. Let's all try to attend, just bring a covered dish of salad, vegetable or dessert; the district will furnish the meat, also a funny play entitled "Womanless Wedding" will be presented for entertainment.

On our sick list we report Elsie Hermis. We hope she is feeling much better by this time.

Our youth door prize went to Celeste Tumis, who was visiting and spending vacation here with her family, Harvey and Rita Tumis, and her brothers, James and Brian.

Congratulations, Celeste, and we were all very happy to see Harvey and his nice family. Harvey reports Nashville, Tennessee is a very nice place. He was transferred to Nashville by the Walgreen Drug Company when he was promoted to district manager of that region of our country.

Other members vacationing from our lodge recently and traveling through Arkansas and Tennessee were Frank and Dorothy Tumis, Dennis and Elizabeth and Jason and Amanda Hermis. They visited Elvis' house in Memphis, Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame, movie star homes and also visited with Harvey while on their vacation. They traveled through the Smo key Mountains in North Carolina and came back to Houston through Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia.

We also heard that Eugene and Henrietta Veselka returned from a vacation trip to New Orleans. They traveled by Amtrak and reported a very good time. They returned to Houston just before Hurricane Danny paid his visit to Louisiana.

Pat and Bob Schleider have been at it again, this time traveling to the Caribbeans. They cruised for 7 days on the SS Norway and brought home many stories and lots of pictures.

Well, it looks like our lodge members are getting up and going places.

At our meeting we had a capsule prize drawing for $30; sorry Louis F. Vacula was absent; the next month's winner will get $35. Come out because you may be the winner.

Door prizes went to Lula Gambil, E.F. Luckemeyer, Emil Kutra and Joe Gambil.

Lodge 155, Austin Reports A most enjoyable afternoon was spent Sunday, June 2,in the home of Don and Sharon Gavin in Round Rock.

A well - attended regular meeting and afterward a brisket barbecue supper with all the trimmings was savored by the members. Our outdoor culinary expert is non other than Don Gavin. His secret pungent barbecue sauce consists of many spices. His beans and cole slaw were a treat, also.

Sharon prepared the desserts and Mrs. Lillie Hejl brought her famous fresh peach pies.

It was voted by the members that July and August regular meetings be suspended because of many vacations planned, family reunions, bazaars, fests and operations. Only executive meetings were to be held.

The next meeting will be held at Mrs. Lillie Hejl's home at 2314 Shoalmont Drive (ph. 453 - 3324) Sunday, September 8; at 3 p.m. after Labor Day. Don Gavin will be in charge of barbecuing, entertainment, etc. We hope to see most of our members at this special event.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The old softball team reporter took vacation and now finds himself behind and late with his reports and happenings of the team. With your permission, I will attempt to bring all reports up - to - date in the next few issues.

As previously reported, we came in second in our Summer League by losing our first game against Trans Con July 2nd. We lost 3 to 2 in an extra inning game. I would like to report the team that beat us is State TADF Champion, so guess we didn't do too badly coming in second in our league out of 12 teams.

We entered the DSM A City Championship playoffs and played our first game Monday, July 15, against Casa View Baptist and we lost by a score of 5 to 1. Mike Moeller pitched a fine game allowing 4 hits, 5 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Hitters were Tommy Yates with a single, Kerry Goad with 2 singles, Tom Stites had a single, and Danny Yates also had a single.

We needed more offense to win this game. Being a double elimination playoff, we played 'again Tuesday night, July 16,and we lost to Adair's in an extra inning game by a score of 4 to 3. It was a very good game but we didn't get the breaks. Mike Moeller was on the mound again,allowing 2 earned runs and 2 were unearned, 5 hits, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Ben Downey with a single, Don Jarma had a single and a triple, Tom Stites with a single, Danny Yates had a walk and a single and Dan Palm, a single.

We were eliminated from the City Playoffs by teams that we had previously beaten in our league.

We entered the ASA Dallas Tournament the week of July 30; our first game was played against Duncanville and we won by a score of 4 to 3. The winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz who allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Ben Downey with a single, Kerry Goad had a walk, Don Jarma had a walk, Tom Stites had a single and a sacrifice fly, Danny Yates, a walk, Paul Bartos had a sacrifice and single and Don Lennox, a walk.

We played again July 31 and we won 5 to 0 against Curry's Leasing. Mike Moeller was the winning pitcher, allowing 2 hits, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Don Jarma with a single, Tom Stites had 3 singles, Danny Yates made a walk, Don Lennox had a single and a walk, Tommy Yates, a double, Darrel Clements, a single and a sacrifice and Mike Moeller, a sacrifice.

Thursday night, August 1, we played Adair's and we lost by a score of 5 to 3. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher, allowing 6 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Hitters were Tommy Yates, earning a single and walk, Kerry Goad had a walk, Don Jarma had a single, Tom Stites, a single, Danny Yates, a double, Don Lennox, a single, Bart Walker, a single and Ben Downey, a single. We were still in the tournament and I will pick up the next game against Curry's Leading.

We have had several of our members drop by to view the team and,if you are among the missing, please come out to the games, we are now playing Wednesday nights in the Summer League at Sam Grand Diamond No. 2.

The Saturday dance will have an admission charge of $5. Sunday, the price will be $6 for the all day celebration which will include a dinner served from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. There will be an anniversary program from 2 to 4 p.m. The dance will be from 5 to 9 p.m. The $6 charge is for all day, regardless of the time one attends. Children under 11 years of age will be charged $3.

Harold Strand of Waco will play for the Saturday night dance. Sunday's band will be The Lone Star Czechs of Ennis. The Sunday dinner will be catered by Bessie Petr of Dallas from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Florence Greer won the door prize which was donated by Marie Prill.

Rose Zalesak will donate the door prize for September.

Helen Paprskar and Julia Dueser, Transportation Committee, reported their finding on getting a bus to go to Temple, October 8th. Plans were voted and passed on to make this trip.

Members of our Ladies' Circle will pay $6, non - members will pay $9 to help pay for the bus. Each one will either take a sack lunch or eat out in Temple.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Bunny Tesar, Mary Hale and Frances Laux.

Maggie Konecny, chairperson for hostesses, read the names of the hostesses for September. They are Elma Anderson, Martha Moon, Mary Dunlap and Ima Lou Laplant. Be sure and bring your covered dish and come and have fun. I'll be seeing you.

From The State Youth Director The Mayborn Convention Center in Temple was the site for the 1985 State YAD. It was an exciting day for the 170 participants and the audience of over 500.

The youth contestants performed 28 individual talent numbers and 13 group acts. The talent contestants offered a variety of performances; from pantomime, tap and jazz dancing to a piano duet. The 4 Beseda circles which performed in their colorful costumes were a delight to watch as they flowed to the music.

It was a pleasure to have Mayor John Sammons open the 1985 State YAD and the entire audience was moved by Helen Hegwood's solo of `America."

The Royalty competition was held at the end of the day. Thelma Hrncir set the mood with her excellent piano music as a background for the contestants to march in by. The king and queen contestants were shining examples of what the youth program is all about. The results were very close and I hope that all contestants will try again next year.

The State YAD is a very special day for all our youth and isn't possible without the support of all the parents and youth leaders. My sincere thanks to the parents, youth leaders and 66 people who worked behind the scenes to make this State YAD a most rewarding and successful day.

Remember that your quarterly report is due September 15th. Mail it in to the Supreme Lodge so that you can receive your reimbursement of 50 cents per member.

The months of September to December have been set aside to emphasize the Statue of Liberty Restoration Campaign. This charity project would be an excellent choice for youth clubs to support. Not only is it a meaningful project but the youth club will receive recognition from the Ellis Island Foundation. Every contributor will receive a certificate and their name will be recorded in the Statue of Liberty Register of Contributors. Several lodges are already participating in this charity project. Perhaps your youth club will want to join in.

The Youth Department will be reviewing the Merit Point System during the coming year. Each youth leader will be receiving a questionnaire regarding the point system. You can expect to receive the questionnaire by September 15.

This month's meeting suggestions are focused on Halloween. Perhaps you can incorporate them into your meeting and social plans.

I am enclosing the business card of Jesse Stence. He is a sales representative for several firms. I have met with him and reviewed his catalogues. He has several items which could be used for fund - raising projects. If you would like more information,please contact him. He is willing to meet with you and discuss his available products. His company offers free training for the youth and also a very fair cost on items.

Humorous Heads Full speed a - head for a short, silly, hair --raising skit!

CAST: Speaking Parts -- Doctor and 9 heads. Non - speaking parts: Extra doctors and heads on stage in background.

COSTUMES: Scary Halloween

masks for heads (including one skeleton mask), white lab coat for the doctor.

PROPS: One long table and one large sheet.

SETTING: Children kneel behind table wearing their masks. A large sheet is draped over the table and in front of children covering their shoulders, arms and chests.

DOCTOR: (Enters and looks at heads). Well, it looks like you're all here. Everything's in order and no one's left. (Looks at his watch.) The exhibit will be open to the public soon, so you heads behave yourself or you'll BE - HEADED for trouble. (Chuckles to himself as he leaves the room.)

HEAD 1: Well, I'm going to speak first because I have the seat of honor.

HEAD 2: (Looking at Head 1); And just what seat is that?

HEAD 1: The head of the table!

HEAD 3: (Looking at Head 2): And why are you here?

HEAD 2: I was caught eating dynamite.

HEAD 3: Why did you do that?

HEAD 2: I wanted my hair to grow out in bangs.

HEAD 4: (Looking at Head 3): And how did you get here?

HEAD 3: (The head of a skeleton): I started to cross the road and didn't make it.

HEAD 4: That sounds terrible. Why didn't you make it?

HEAD 5: (Pretending to cry): Boo hoo, boo - hoo.

HEAD 6: (Looking at Head 5): What's your problem?

HEAD 5: I can't seem to remember anything since I've been here.

DOCTOR (Enters and looks at heads): Well, gentlemen, in a few minutes you'll all be famous and who knows, you might just go to the HEAD OF THE CLASS! (All heads groan and knock their heads together!)

DOCTOR (Looks at audience and shrugs his shoulders. I guess that's what they call a HEAD ON COLLISION!

Paper Bag Halloween Decorations Hang them from the ceiling!

Set them on the floor!

Giant spooks will greet your friends and scare them even more!

All sizes of grocery bags, flat - type department store bags (about 20 x 24"), newspaper, and some string that's all you need to make fun and spooky giant characters for Halloween.

The newspaper is used for stuffing.

Tear the newspaper into quarter - page pieces and crush it to make the stuffing.

To join the parts for the characters, use glue and tape, string or paper fasteners. Paint them as you want.

Features can be cut from paper or painted on. You can even use nut cups, paper cups or pipe cleaners for features. Hair is paper or paper bags, cut into fringe; you can also use yarn.

Cat For the cat, use a department store bag. Stuff one corner and tie for the neck. Stuff the remaining bag for the body, tying the open end closed. Use your hands to shape the body.

For each pair of legs, cut a smaller grocery bag in half lengthwise. Attach the open end to the body. Twist the bottom end for the foot. For the tail, cut a large grocery bag in half lengthwise. Crush and twist one half; attach the open end to the body. Add paper ears. Attach string for hanging.

Spider For the spider, use a department store bag. Stuff one corner and tie for the neck. Stuff the remaining part of the bag and tie closed. Use your hands to shape the body. For each leg, twist half of a large grocery bag. Attach the legs to the body. Add eyes.

Bat For the head and body, invert a smaller grocery bag. Cut the bottom edge into tabs. Stuff; then glue the tabs over the bottom to cover the opening.

For the wings, slit the sides of a department store bag and spread the bag out. Attach the center to the back of the bat; cut the edges of the wings, as pictured. Add feet cut from bags.

WITCH G"' 007

Witch Halloween would not be Halloween without a witch. A department store bag makes her body. Large grocery bags are used for her legs and smaller one for her arms and head. Her hat is a small bag glued to a cardboard brim.

Invert the bag for her body and fill the top with newspaper. Tie for the waist with string, letting the bottom flare out for a skirt.

Cut a large grocery bag in half lengthwise for her legs. Fold each leg to the desired width and glue it to the inner back of the skirt. Crush the leg at the knee and ankle. Cut a piece of paper, as shown, for each foot. Fold in half (dotted line) and glue over leg.

Crush and twist the bag for each arm. Attach the open end to the shoulder. For the head, invert and stuff the bag. Tie the bottom closed, spreading the edges to attach to the body.

For the crown of her hat, cut off the bottom of the bag and tie the cut edges together to make . a point. Crush the bag. Cut a brim from cardboard, cutting out the center to make tabs as shown. Bend the tabs up. Spread the bottom of the crown to glue over the tabs.

Tie a string to the top of the head and bring it up through the hat to hang.

Tongue Twister Game Have your guests sit in a circle. Cut out the tongue twisters and place them in a bowl. Then place the bowl in the middle of the circle. The first player must take out one tongue twister, read it as fast as he can, then pass it on to the next player. The tongue twister continues around the circle until a player makes a mistake on a word.

Then this player must pull out another tongue twister and begin again. You might want to give a "boo - hoo bug a - boo" prize to the slips - of - the tongue.

You may want to do this activity as-sa contest and see who can say the twisters the fastest and also correctly.

A witch with an itch might cure it with a twitch of her switch.

Soon the witch's broom will zoom past the moon.

A fat black cat sometimes spats on other cats.

The boo with hoo •is just boo hoo and not the boo a spook can do.

A slinky slippy spider slides and spins. Sometimes outside - sometimes in.

The yield of the pumpkin field is plenty of plump pumpkins.

A skeleton never weighs a ton with or without his clothes on.

Frankenstein or Einstein, we all dine at evening time.

The haunted house has a mouse and when it eeks, the girls who peek, squeak.

The monster mash smashed the hash, broke the latch, and crashed the trash.

Because you asked,I took the task and tried to make a fast face mask.

District II Six Flags Trip The trip date will be Sunday, September 29, 1985. The youth who attended camp or entered YAD or were qualified will be able to attend free. All leaders, assistants, chaperones and their spouses will be required to pay $10.25 for their Six Flags' ticket, also youth who are not qualified but wish to go may go and pay only their $10.25 gate fee.

Other adults wishing to go on this trip must pay $20 per person and this would include round trip and gate fee.

All lodges having a youth leader must make reservations through their leader. Lodges without youth leader(s) must call me for reservations. All reservations must be made prior to September 15th.

All buses will leave from Temple Mall parking lot (north of Sears) promptly at 7:30 a.m. and return by 9 p.m.

Lodge 177, Academy YC Has Two State Winners

District I Camp Report Dear Readers: With school starting, most youth are wishing that summer vacation was just beginning. Here is a look back at the beginning of the 1985 summer vacation.

June 1st, 115 campers and chaperones descended upon Camp Lone Star near La Grange for four fun - filled days. Seven youth clubs were represented.

Activities began as soon as everyone checked in. Swimming, canoeing, craft, volleyball, archery, and games were enjoyed by all.

Special thanks to SYD Sue Meadows for her handling of the archery. Due to circumstances, horseback riding was dropped and a new activity called the 'Ropes Course" was used. Who can forget Penny, Richie, Brian, Shelly, Donald, and the rest walking between trees on wire cables? DYC Susan Skrabanek would rather forget her trip across the wire. Sue even proved the course was a piece - of cake. Younger campers learned about teamwork on the lOViropes.

At night the youth clubs gave parties that were enjoyed by all.

Relay races brought out the competitive spirit in everyone.

Monday night there was a water balloon and shaving cream contest.

Assistant DYC Randy Gaas and I were the losers this night, about just wait until next year.

Dear Readers: August 14th we held our youth club meeting with 14 members present.

August 18th at State YAD we had two members entered. Both our members won first places; namely, Eric Tomastik won a first place for his wasp collection and Kevin Brown on a model truck. We are very proud of them and all the other winners.

August 21st we held our summer party. We met at Wonderland Park at 6:30 p.m. and played one round of Putt Putt. We left there, bombarded Baskin & Robbins where we cleaned out their supply of grape ice. From there we went to Lions Park Pool and swam from 8 to 10 p.m. We really had fun.

August 11th ten of our members went to the District II fall meeting where we played Putt Putt and went swimming. After that,we played what was left of the carnival games. Our members won many things in the country stores, but were very disappointed that the adults had cleaned out the cake walk. In any future such meeting I would hope the adults would have enough manners to leave some of each game. I was really shocked at some of the adults. If they expect kids to not be rude and to act mannerly then they should set the example. I saw few fine examples at that meeting.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 30 Taiton Youth Club News Dear Vestnik Readers: The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its annual summer outing at the American Legion, August 4.

The meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar. The pledge was led by Lenice Kaspar, and a prayer was recited by Marcy Dor otik, Poems were read by Lenice Kaspar, Michelle Srubar, Jean Dorotik and Marcy Dorotik.

Contest winners in ages 6 to 9 were: 1st - Jeannine Dorotik, 2nd Craig Dorotik, 3rd - Lenice Kaspar; and in 13 to 17 were: 1st - Jean Dorotik, 2nd - Marcy Dorotik, 3rd Michelle Srubar.

The meeting was adjourned. We then played games and ate a hamburger supper.

Lodge 47 Youth Enjoy Camp Seaton

We had a lot of fun this past week.

The Juniors of District II went to camp August 8th. At camp we made leather bracelets and decorated drinking cups and sun visors. For fun we rode horses and went swimming.

We learned about archery and received certificates for participating.

We had a punk party and had shaving cream and water balloon fights. On our last day there, we had a very funny flag on our flag pole. Everyone who was there knows what it was, right,Mr. Frankie?

Sunday, August 11, was District II fall meeting at Taylor. The youth-

*enjo yed swimming or playing golf while the adults had a meeting. When e came back, we played games and had the drawings for door prizes.

Afterwards we had a very good meal served by Lodge 29, Taylor.

Remember, Lodge 47's meeting has been changed to September 8th (the second Sunday). All the youth in that lodge should bring a cake.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Hill Country Lodge 185 Youth Club held their meeting and social at the Guadalupe Shute, August 15th. A short meeting was held and followed by lots of trips down the chutes.

In the evening we prepared and served a meal for all adults who helped with our project during Polkafest.

Chris Haag cooked fried chicken, Amy and Brett Doeppenschmidt and April Haag prepared potato salad, beans and garlic bread.. We also made Chocolate Chip cookies and Sad Cake.

News From Lodge 47, Seaton YC Dear Members and Friends, The youth club meeting of Lodge 47 came to order August 4th. Melanie Koslovsky led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

This month's birthday wishes go to James Billeck who will be 9 years old.

Door prizes were won by Deanna Culp and Lori Gregg.

We also discussed the District II YAD. Youth Club Members Melanie Koslovsky, Lori Greger and James Billeck all placed in their Crafts.

High point winners were: (Juniors) James Billeck, Deanna Culp, Tim Wilson, Melanie Koslovsky, Heidi Schroder; and (Teens) Kim Craft, Kathy Billeck, Shana Patterson, Tammy Kortis and Michael Morris.

The social this month will be State YAD. There will be four Junior members attending the District II camp.

This month the youth leaders are in charge of the kitchen. All members brought cakes to be served with the dinner after the meeting.

Everyone who helps in the kitchen will be able to earn extra points.

Our next meeting will be held September 8 at 2 p.m. All members are, again, asked to bring cakes to be served with the dinner after the meeting.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30 members attended the SPJST Youth Achievement Day in Temple, August 18th.

Lenice Kaspar of Taiton Lodge 30 won first place in the 6 to 9 age category. She did a jazz dance to "Physical." Lenice is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kaspar of Taiton.

Other winners were Jean Dorotik in the 15 - 17 category. She placed third

held at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas.

This year, Lodge 40 was represented by 1 Talent entry, 4 Royalty candidates, and 9 Crafts items.

After all the registration ' was finished, youth members enjoyed watching competing Beseda circles. At noon many enjoyed a catered barbecue beef lunch which was delicious.

Right after lunch everyone was entertained by numerous Individual and Group Talent performances.

Although our lodge's Talent participant, Lori Holub, wasn't a winner, she gave an excellent performance.

In the Royalty competition several very nice speeches were given by those competing.

Lodge 40 brought back several awards from State YAD, namely, Lori Holub (13 - 14) won two 1st place trophies in Home Arts and Foods. She also won 3rd place in Handicrafts.

Jody Henderson, one of the Queen candidates, won 3rd place in the (15 17) Science/Educational category.

Sister Westernman was born in Temple, Texas and was the daughter of the late Ab and Virgin Coleman Reid. She was a graduate of the King's Daughters School of Nursing and was a retired licensed professional nurse.

She was formerly employed at the Santa Fe Hospital in Temple.

She was a Nazarene.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Westerman, in 1969 and by one brother, Ennis Reid.

Survivors are two daughters, Daisy Howard of Cambridge and Virginia Thompson of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Brumbelow of Moody and Ozella Hagar of Snider; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 29, at Thorn Funeral Home Chapel in Cambridge with the Rev. Joseph Pearce officiating. Burial was in Northwood Cemetery in Cambridge.

EDWARD JULIUS PTACEK, who passed away July 1, 1985 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. Brother Ptacek had attained the age of 79 years.

• Brother Ptacek was born October 5, 1905 in Snook. His parents were the late Julius Vincent and Albina (Sebesta) Ptacek.

March 27, 1932, he was married to Bessie Orsak, who preceded him in death.

Brother Ptacek was a lifelong resident of Burleson County, Texas.

He owned and operated the E.J. Ptacek Grocery in Snook for 45 years, retiring in 1975.

He was an active person in the community, being a member of the Snook Brethren Church, where he had been an Elder and the secretary of the Mutual Aid Society. He was also a member of the Snook Lions Club, and he served on the City Council of Snook.

Brother Ptacek was a 50 - year member of our SPJST Lodge No. 9 in Snook.

Funeral services for Brother Ptacek were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3 in the Snook Brethren Church with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial followed in the Snook Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his. wife, Bessie Ptacek December 27, 1974; his sisters, Lenora Ptacek and Julia Lane; his brothers, Robert and Harry Ptacek.

Sister Sophie Mary Martinak, 87, was born in Moulton (Lavaca County), Texas, 31 January 1898 to the late Joseph Rod and Katerina Penc Rod. She grew up in Moulton and received her education in that area.

October 31, 1916, she married John George Martinak in El Campo, Texas.

They lived on a farm in the Pierce, Texas area for a while, moving to Albany in 1924. Her husband died in 1984.

Sister Martinak was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Lebanon for 40 years and, more recently, a member of St. Mary's in Albany. She was a busy homemaker who enjoyed gardening and canning. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje.

Survivors include four sons, Charles, Ray and Robert Martinak of Albany and Amos Martinak of Lebanon; two daughters, Martha Foulke and Wilma Hamer, both of Albany; three brothers, Lewis and William Rod of Pierce, Texas and Anton Rod of El Campo, Texas; five sisters, Lillie Stock, Edith Engle, Augustine Hubenak, Annie Hubenak of El Campo and Cecelia Hubenak of Pierce; 22 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

Sister Martinak will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Brother Janik died Tuesday evening, July 23, 1985, in a Wharton hospital after a sudden illness. He was born 13 December 1906, in East Bernard to the late Frank Joseph and Julie Beran Janik. He was married February 12, 1927, in East Bernard, to the former Hermina Martha Zotyka. A resident of Wharton since 1943, he was a retired real estate appraiser with the Wharton County Tax Appraisal Office. He also worked as an operator for the Wilson's Cotton Gin and the People's Cotton Seed Company. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and AARP. Survivors include his wife, Martha Janik of Wharton; daughter and son in - law, Doris and Norris Crawford of Houston; sons and daughters - in law, Frank C. and Helen Janik of Wharton, Adolph and Kathleen Janik of Houston and Willie Janik, also of Houston; sisters, Betty Walker of Georgia, Lillian Havran of Wharton, Louise Krall of Hungerford and Janie Sulak and Annie Bartos, both of East Bernard; brothers, Joe Janik, John Janik and Ed Janik, all of East Bernard, and' Rudolph Janik of Wharton; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

During World War II, he served with the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army and the Pacific Theater of War. May 25, 1948 he was married to Miss Alice Trojacek of Telico. After their marriage they lived in Ennis until they moved to the Telico community in 1958. He was employed as a sales manager for Ellison Concrete and Plumbing.

Brother Honza was vice president and director of the Rice Water Supply Corporation. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 25 where he served as an insurance sales representative and as financial secretary for 10 years, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Honza of Telico; two daughters, Mrs. Martin (Gladys) Zapletal of Ennis and Mrs. Rex (Donna) Spurgeon of Telico; one son, Larry of Denison; four grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Clara Kuban, Mrs. Celestine Hrabina, Mrs. Lillie Novy, Mrs. Rose Kriska and Mrs. Viola Trojacek; two brothers, Wesley of Telico and Milton of Dallas.

SPJST President Howard Leshikar of Temple assisted under the auspices of the Society.

Brother Kocurek moved to Baylor Colinty in 1920 and farmed the same land for 60 years before retiring in 1980. He married Eula B. Bartos 28 December 1926 at the Bomarton Catholic Church. He was a 65 - year KC member and 50 - year member of the SPJST. In 1951 he was named the outstanding farmer by the Miller Brazos Soil Conservation District.

Two brothers and five sisters preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Kocurek; three daughters, Peggy Joe Suggs of Bethany, Oklahoma, Mary Joreen Ludeke of Burkburnett, Texas, Helen Jane Mobley of Green River, Wyoming ; one son, Joe Eric Kocurek of Burkburnett; two sisters, Mattie Miller of Austin, Helen Brundige of Granger; a brother, William Kocurek of Granger; 14 grandchildren and 12 great - grandchildren.

Sister Willis was born April 27, 1904 in Texas, the daughter of Willie and Bessie May Land Sims. She was raised in Ellis County and attended Ennis and Laneview schools.

May 21, 1926 she was married to Randall L. Willis of Ennis. After their marriage they lived in Ennis until 1950 when they moved to Rosenberg, Texas.

In 1974 they moved back to Ennis.

Mr. Willis preceded her in death in May 1981. Sister Willis worked for the Plaza Theater for many years and also worked for a theater in Rosenberg, retiring in 1974.

Sister Willis Was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 25 and stie-Garrett Church of Christ.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jane Harris of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Blanche Aldridge of Ennis, Jewel Waters of Ennis, Hazel Haines of Hammond, Indiana; and two grandchildren.

Brother Schnell was the founder and past president of the Artist Guild and, before retiring, was the art director for Robinson - Gerrad advertising agency.

He also was a longtime member of Lodge 88, Houston.

Brother Schnell is survived by his wife, Helen V. Schnell; daughter, Donna Schnell of Houston; son, Richard B. Schnell of Houston; and brother, Robert L. Schnell of Norris, Tennessee.

Services were held Friday, August 9, at the Houston National Chapel.

Interment followed at the Houston National Cemetery.

Spacek, Jr. of Yuma, Arizona; a daughter, Sue French; and grandson, Jeremy French of Hobbs, New Mexico; three brothers, Anton Spacek of Fort Worth, Jerry Spacek of Houston and Joe Spacek of Bellville; three sisters, Mary Salas of La Grange, Ann Dickerson and Sophie Metcalf of Houston.

SUPREME LODGE . • • located in Temple, Texas, and consists of five administrative officers and seven directors selected by the convention. They are solely responsible for administration of all business affairs of the society in accordance with the constituiton and bylaws as re-affirmed or revised by the delegates in each quadrennial convention.
