August 18th -- was a day for our SPJST youth of Texas, who competed in various talents, artistic creative and cooking items in four age categories, plus royalty, at the Frank Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. (It was announced that sometime in the future, the first place recipes will be printed in the Vestnik, so watch for them.)

It turned out to be a pleasant day and all seven (first place) entrants and candidates showed up to challenge each other, regardless of what type of competition before a very large crowd, and each winner accepted their ribbon regardless of the results.

Those whose names were called out for presentations of first, second and third places were standing on a stairway similar to the World Olympic platforms, which actually took away the disappointed feeling of those whose names were announced for second and third places; also this type of setup avoided much confusion, which was a good gesture.

Although it may have been disappointing to some of our youth who did not receive the highest awards, the following were announced as the achievers.

State YAD Scholarship recipient is Shirley Dobecka from District III (Lodge 6). SL- President Howard Leshikar made the announcement and presentation.

Other awards were made by SYD Sue Meadows to Donna Schoeneman (Senior of the Year) and Cheryl Schoeneman (Junior of the Year), both from District I (Lodge 9). There were also awards given to the ten top achievers, which will be announced by the State Youth Director.

Highlighting the occasion were the seven district king/queen candidates (with the exception of one king) in their colorful attire and impressive speeches, which made the day worthwhile. Reigning State Royalty are King Michael Marek from District VI (Lodge 40) and Queen Lisa Reznik from District III (Lodge 84). Duke Danny Borak and Duchess Meribeth Novak also participated during the robe and crowning ceremony. We would like to compliment the audience for their attention given for 8 hours!

A very long article could be compiled of the entire day, however, space doesn't allow this week because of skipping August 21st edition.

However, we wish to mention of everyone's assigned post at State YAD from the ranking officials to the lodge members, that it was gratifying to see all those familiar faces throughout the state as well as our former SPJST State Queen and Miss SPJST Charlotte Banik who did a splendid job as MC during the largest portion of the busy day.

The allowable lead content in regular gasoline will drop from 1.1 grams per gallon to 0.5 grams July 1, and prices will rise accordingly. One aim of the federal regulation -- in addition to reducing lead in the atmosphere -- is to cut the price spread between leaded and unleaded gasolines, making illegal use of the cheaper fuel less tempting to consumers. The lead limit will drop again, to 0.1 grams per gallon, January 1, 1986. Even that, experts say, will be enough to meet the needs of pre - 1970 cars designed to run on leaded gas. *** Expressions of Sympathy and Youth Letters are delayed due to lack of space. ***

NOTICE Czech Classes At Westchester-Spring Branch High School Registration for the 1985 fall semester classes in Conversational Czech will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. August 27th and 28th and between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

August 29th and 30th at WESTCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL, 901 Yorkchester, Houston, Texas 77079 The Beginner's Class, Czech I, will be held Tuesday evenings starting September 10 and the Advanced Class, Czech II, will be held Thursday evenings starting September 12th. All class hours in the 12 - week courses will be from 7 to 9 p.m. each evening and will be held at WESTCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL, instead of MEMORIAL HS as in past years.

Czech Texans Win High Honors Joe Sykora of Dallas, formerly of Penelope, and Johnny Hubacek of Ennis recently (August 11) won first and second places, respectively, in the nationally high ranked button accordion contest at the Pla - Mor Czech Days Polka Festival at Lincoln, Nebraska.

Joe Sykora received the first place trophy in the Amateur Division while Johnny Hubacek placed second in the Professional Division. He was outranked only by the highly talented accordionist and all - round Nebraska musician, Allen Valish.

Monsignor Mark Deering of Saint Louis Parish, Waco, Texas, shows his SPJ ST cap presented to him by SFM Silas Smith. Monsignor Deering wore the cap on a recent trip to Ireland.

While in Ireland, Monsignor Deering was asked several times what SPJST meant. The Monsignor invited all Irishmen who wanted to know what SPJST meant to come to the great State of Texas, and his friend, Silas Smith, would tell all Irishmen what SPJ ST stands for and about the great organization that it represents.

The day will begin at 11 a.m. with a brief meeting which will include the ELECTION OF THE REST HOMES DIRECTOR. If you plan to run for this position, please be present at the meeting.

Dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m., the district will be furnishing the meats, drinks etc., and you are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert.

At 12:30 p.m., the entertainment will begin, starting with the District V youth auction, performances by the Sokol Gymnasts, Lorrie Dance Studio, Lodge 88 Choral Group and Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra.

The "Womanless Wedding" will be presented with participation of members from some of the lodges in the district. Afterwards, refreshments will be served.

Dear Readers: The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 was held Friday, August 2, 1985. President Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order by asking Lynette Hykel to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Pledge.

Correspondence was read from the Mary Svacina family. All reports given were in order.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz thanked everyone who helped the youth at our annual picnic. Four of our youth members went to camp. The youth took cakes to the rest home August 7th. Birthday celebrant for August was Shirley Dobecka. Shirley brought the birthday cake.

Brother George Straten gave the Board of Trustees' report. He reported that our annual picnic was a great success. He thanked everyone who helped in any way to make the picnic a success.

Discussion was held about getting the booth ready for Westfest. They also will start baking bread Friday, August 9th. Anyone wanting to help in any way is asked to call Robert or Lydia Dobecka.

The $10 door prize drawn was Doris Jane Skrdla; $10 -- Emily Svoboda; $3 -- Virginia Marek; $2 door prize was won by Lydia Dobecka.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be Friday, September 6th. The regular lodge meeting will be Sunday, September 8,at 3 p.m.

The membership would like to thank everyone who donated items, worked and supported our annual picnic. All these things made our picnic a great success. A big THANK YOU to everyone!

15, Buckholts Makes Contribution Lodge

Dear Members: President Ann Balusek opened the regular monthly meeting of Lodge 15 by leading the members and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. We stood for a moment of silence for our departed Sister Anna Kuzel. May she rest in peace.

Sister Ann then welcomed our guests, Gene Marak, Thomas Harwell, Lillie Zajicek and Dan Balusek.

We wished Anna Marak a happy 16th birthday, and happy anniversary to Adolph and Alma Seibert; they are married 50 years. We hope you all have a lot more.

On the sick list are Standy Svetlik and Louis Svetlik. We hope and pray both of you are better by now.

Secretary Charlsie Svetlik read the minutes and thank you cards from the Ronnie Rubac family, Anna Kuzel , family, and for a donation that we made to a group of Cameron, Texas girls for a track meet at Fort Worth, plus a letter from Buckholts Mayor Francis Fuchs about August being cleanup month and a letter from Westfest inviting us to come.

President Ann gave a very good report on the District II meeting held in Taylor. It was enjoyed by all. Lodge 15 donated prizes for the games at the meeting. We here at Lodge 15 are very proud that we will have the State "42" Domino Playoff at Buckholts.

We want to welcome you all. It will be held October 15, 1985, starting at 10 a.m. We'll tell you more about it next month.

4/VESTNiK—Wednesday, August 28, 1985 We decided to donate $50 to the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department.

The meeting was adjourned and we all enjoyed a delicious chicken fried steak prepared by Lillie Zajicek and Pat Hillman. Thank you both so much!

Tabor Lodge 17 Meets New

Dear Members: Lodge 17 held its regular monthly meeting at New Tabor August 4 with all officers present.

We had one new member, Bob Hartzog.

A resolution was read for Brother Joe Martin Kachtik. We would like to extend our sympathy to the family and friends of -Brother Kachtik.

New Tabor had a total of 13 first place winners at District I YAD. There was also a number of second and third place winners.

New Tabor has two scholarship award winners; they are Chris Skrabanek and Pamela Odstrcil.

Our "42" Tournament was held July 28; Betty Suehs and Susan Skrabanek were first place winners.

Second place winners were Gladys Hejl and Carol Petty.

Our "Straight" Domino Tournament was held August 11, with Andrew and Lola Vavra as first place winners and Gladys Hejl and Carol Petty, second place winners.

The books were audited and found in order. The youth club books will be audited at the September meeting.

Also, at our September meeting plans will be made for a "Fall Festival;" come and be a part of it. We will also be discussing direct billing.

Our next meeting will be September 1st.

Dear Readers: Our monthly meeting was called to order by President David Vanicek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by our llagbearers.

Minutes of our last meeting were read by Secretary Pat Vanicek, which were approved.

Those on the sick list were E.J. Giestman who had surgery and Regina Zabcik who had surgery. Also get well wishes are extended to Bernie Gebala's wife who is in the hos pit al.

Birthday celebrants for the month of August are Joe Sebek, Raymond Coots and Juanita Cabla. Happy Birthday to you all!

Transferees to Lodge 24 were Kenneth, Judy and Jana Jeske; we hope to see you all soon at our lodge

functions.

Thank you to the board members for doing a lot of odd jobs pround the hall, such as painting, paneling rooms, and recarpeting floors. All of it is really looking nice. Thanks for all your time.

Congratulations to our youth club memberS for doing such a good job of representing Lodge 24 at our District.

October 6th, which is the first Sunday of the month, is Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas. The members decided to charter a bus for that day; the cost will be approximately $11 per person. If you are int erested l eall Arleen Tschoerner at 985 - 2519 after 5 p.m. as soon as possible to make reservations so we know how many buses we need to g et. Remember, Czech Day w ill be October 6th; let me know as soon as you can.

Brother Van Fowler asked for the use of our facilities for a dance benefiting the Telico Fire Department. They will construct a building to house the department. It was voted to let them have the dance if they will clean afterwards; and, if you could not attend, I feel sure they will welcome a donation at any time.

Brother Johnny I. Krajca reminded everyone about the Barbecue Cookoff and Domino Tournament Sunday afternoon, August 25th. Members were told to bring their own picnic lunch and enjoy the festivities. Those interested in entering were to contact Johnny.

Brother Joe Trojacek reported that repair to the ice - making machine is to be done this coming week.

28, East Bernard To Meet Lodge

Dear Members: This year Labor Day is on the 2nd of September, therefore, the local lodge rule on meeting dates will prevail. This will move the September meeting date to the second Sunday, the 8th beginnin g at 2 p.m. and the place will be the lodge hall. I he agenda will follow our regular line of procedure.

The meeting after the meeting will convene at the coffee pot.

Our August meetin g was held on the 4th and was one of the shortest meetings on record. It lasted little under half an hour. All reports given were accepted without question. There being no old or new business, the meeting adjourned.

The'door prize was won by Brother Albert Lupik who, in turn, donated it to the special kitchen fund.

With the additional food being donated by Sisters Janik, Sruhar, Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval, the meat sandwiches, donated by the lodge, were again, not alone on the serving table. 32 Upcoming Events

The Lodge 32 monthly meeting was called to order by President Ella Arnold.

Frances Motal reported that Lodge 32 would have a booth at the upcoming Victoria Fest which will be held at the De Leon Plaza November 17, 1985.

Evelyn Horelk a was elected chairperson for the Lodge 32 Czech Fest in 1986 and Adolph Motal has been assigned to select a band for this event.

It was decided that Lodge 32 participate in this year's Armistice Day Parade in Victoria.

Franklin and Lois Elles brought the original Lodge 32 charter to the meeting. They will try to have it restored to its original state.

Door prizes were won by Lois Elles and Eric Motal.

The next meeting will be held September 4th. All members are urged to attend.

Lodge 35, Elk Holds Meeting Dear Members: August 11, 1985, the lodge meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

Flagbearer Dawn Pavelka led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Visitors were Lillie Matus, Beth Cook, Barbara Sonada and Stacy Sonada; come back again.

Rosemary Banik gave the treasurer's report and read the minutes of the last meeting.

Youth Leader Louise Burney reported that 13 children and 2 adults went to camp this year, and August 9 they went to campout at Trail - end camps. The children had a busy summer. September 3,school will start. again.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Richard Burney, Ernest Clemons, Marie Reichardt, Barbara Pavelka and Dorothy Banik.

Chairpersons made their reports; namely, Barbara Pavelka -- kitchen, Albert Banik and Randy Pavelka -entertainment, and John Stuckley -refreshments. They also thanked everyone who helped them.

The Moonlighters played an hour for us.

Door prizes were won by Ernest Clemons (adult) and I racy Breitkreutz (youth).

After the meeting, we had a delicious roast beef dinner. Those members who don't come to our meeting sure are missing out.

Lodge 51, Effinger Reminder This is the reminder I promised you, calling your attention to the forthcoming lodge picnic to be held at the Ellinger C of C Recreation Hall, Sunday, Septembir 15th.

Lodge 88 Holds Domino Tournament Even though we got a late start in deciding to hold the tournament, we had .a very good turnout.

Those who participated (listed as partners) were Gene Barcak and Adolph Jurica, Amos Kadlecek and Jerry Kolacny, Lillie Spies and.

Martha Baxter, Charles Veit and Bobby Allbritton, Joe Miksch and Robert Grissom, and Charles Kadlecek and Johnny Baack.

The winners in "42" dominoes were Gene Barcak and Adolph Jurica.

The tournament was held Sat urday, August 18 at 10 a.m. Lunch and refreshments were served during the day. I'm sure that everyone enjoyed themselves and next year we will plan ahead to have a larger turnout.

88 Houston News Lodge

At our regular monthly meeting held August 12, the members present were honored to celebrate a happy occasion with Sister Annie Baethe and her family. Sister Annie attained the age of 96 years of age and outlived her insurance certificate. President Jerry Ermis and Board Member Louis Hanus arranged the ceremony and photo session. Sister Baethe was presented her check and a large decorated cake and other refreshments were served in her honor after the meeting. The cake served by First Vice President Clara Broz and the refreshments by Annie Vala were enjoyed by all. Family members attending with Sister Baethe were her daughter, Evelyn Mikolas; son and daughter - in - law, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Baethe; grandson, Jay Scott; granddaughter, Judy and great granddaughter, Melissa. Our congratulations to this matriarch of SPJST Lodge No. 88!

We were honored to have SL Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy, present at our meeting. Brother Leonard and District V Director made the presentation of the insurance check to Sister Baethe.

Dorisand Henry Knapick, daughter, Betty Forgerty, and Doris's mother, Elsie Talcott, journeyed to Clinton, Louisiana over the weekend of August 3rd for the wedding of Elsie's granddaughter. It turned into a big family visit also as relatives from as far away as Michigan attended.

Milert and Evelyn Antrich also went touring a 4000 - mile tour on a chartered motor coach with the "Hub. City Dutchmen." They left Yoakum, Texas and stopped in Ardmore, Oklahoma; Wichita, Kansas; Watertown, South Dakota; Winnipeg, Canada; New Ulm and Gibbon, Minnesota and Lincoln, Nebraska.

They saw many points of interest along the way and danced to the "Hub City Dutchmen" and other polka bands from across the USA while in Minnesota. They saw the unique Corn Palace, toured the Mint Royal Canadian Plant, the Pauline Chambers Plant where cookies and other delicacies are made, and the Glockenspiel Musical Clock Tower.

Sister Millie Manack passed away following many complications following her surgery. Her services were held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, August 9th. Sister Millie was a Lodge 88 sales representative, a member of the Entertainment Committee, was active in the Drama Club, was on the Auditing Committee for several years, was secretary of the Board of Trustees in 1984, and was on the Blue Room Committee this year.

Millie and I always joked about our origins -- she was from Pennsylvania and I am from Ohio. We were two of those "Yankees." May she rest in peace. We'll miss her.

Brother Richard Schnell also passed away August 6 at his home and was buried at Houston National Cemetery.

Dick will be remembered as' our lodge photographer. For many years he snapped pictures at all our events and took care of the picture framing and art work needed here at our lodge. He is survived by his wife, Helen (Valcik) Schnell; daughter, Donna, and son, Richard. Our prayers are with Sister.

Helen and her family in this time of sorrow.

Director Tim Kostom of the Choral Group has announced that practice has started again after a short summer

rest. They have several appearances for this fall, starting with the District V Family Day here at Lodge 88, September 15th.

Marie Stayton has announced that she will be directing an English Play to he presented sometime in November.

Watch for this; it sounds like a good one.

Something new has been scheduled.

An exercise class for ladies only will start the third Monday evening under the direction of Marie Kostomlatsky.

The classes will be held every Monday evening from 7 until 8, except when it interferes with our meeting nights.

There will be no charge for the classes and Sister Marie promises that we'll all be as thin as she is if we follow her directions. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for the first class and she'll advise you further on what you need. Call Marie or Marie Stayton for further information.

Little Julia Hoffman, infant daughter of Johnny and Elaine Hoffman, passed away August 8, 1985 and was buried in Moulton, Texas, August 10th. Our prayers go out to Johnny and Elaine and their two little boys. They worked hard to keep Julia with them for almost five months.

Herman Liebscher is in Sam Houston Hospital undergoing chemotheraphy treatments. At this time he is in Room 231 and his daughter, Carol, told me he is ready for company.

88 Meeting Report Lodge

August 12, 7:30 p.m., 121 members attended the monthly meeting of Lodge 88. Several guests were present, including SI. Officer Leonard Mikeska and his lovely wife, Dorothy. Brother Mikeska came to present a check to Sister Annie Baethe to cover her paid up insurance policy. The presentation was made toward the end of the meeting. Photos were taken, video tape was made, and a beautiful cake was served to honor Sister. Baethe and her family members.

Congratulations to the entire family!

A Blue Room Party is scheduled for September 22. 'The usual drinks, dinner and dancing will be provided, plus door prizes. For only $10 per person, you can't afford to miss this party.

Our usual financial reports were heard and 37 new applicants were approved for membership.

Brother Royal Warnasch, chairman of the Board of Trustees, reported on Board activities, including donations to Cancer Society and St. Jose Clinic.

He then reported that the bids for the rebuilding of the barbecue house into an all purpose building were in and that the plans and bid accepted by the Board could be built at a cost of $94,000. The membership, after discussion, approved the building.

Then Brother Warnasch introduced the ideas of redecoration of the Ballroom. Further discussion, and motions, gave the Board permission to proceed with extensive redecoration; sounds like our facilities will have a new look soon. Whether this is considered maintenance or progress, I don't know, but I am pleased to know that our Board is efficiently managing the requirements of our properties.

Members voted to have their meeting place changed; as of September, the meetin g s now will be held every third Sunday at the St. Margaret Mary's Activity Hall, 1314 Fair Avenue. Members coming from the north side, take Interstate 37, then take Fair Avenue and exit to the left.

Sister Cathy Uribe gave a report on the possibility of organizing the youth club. She mentioned that there were 27 potential members for the youth club.

More research will be done, and a complete report will be given to the members at the next , meeting.

Members of the lod ge fully endorse this project and will support it.

We did have an application for a new member, Tyler J. Crelia. The committee on membership recommended to accept the member; motion was made and seconded, motion carried.

Lodge 177, Academy Donates $1400 The August 14th meetin g of Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Bill Hutka. The pled ge was g iven by the members.

Roll call of officers revealed all present; the minutes were then read and approved.

Communications from SL President Howard Leshikar commending our lod g e for our $1,000 donations to the SPJST Scholarship Fund and $300 to the Little Ri er Fire Dept., also from the Temple Police Dept. thanking our lodge for $100 donation to the Angelica Ciandera Reward Fund.

Police Chief Thomas Vannaz thanked the lodge; this was paid from the Bingo Fund.

All chairpersons' reports were good.

Youth Leader Anne Tomastik had 12 members present and also is making plans for a Halloween Party; more on this from the youth club reporter.

Trustees' report was that the air conditioning has been fixed and need to put up signs stating "Not Responsible For Stolen Articles From The Ticket Booth." A new ticket chairperson has been named and Bill Hutka will take care of getting help for the remainder of the year.

We had five new members.

Under new business, Bruce Tomastik asked the lodge for $250 to finish paying for the FFA cattle trailer.

A motion was made to donate this money from the August 24th dance.

A committee was appointed to come Up with some "doings" for a Fall Festival to be held at the hall.

Sister Mary Renfro re-ad a letter from Lodge 92 in reference to their Golden Jubilee, and it was voted to take an ad for their pro g ram book. We wish them many more years of success.

Sister Carrie Milan reported for our Youth Leader Carolyn Cleveland (she was working) on our youth club members, Michael and Blaine Mason, Chris Simek, Josh -Milan, • Ky. Cleveland and Tressie Jean Sanders, alon g with Sisters Carolyn and Carol Sanders who attended camp and in asking how they enjoyed it and, with big eyes and smiles they said it was g reat and they are ready for next year.

So you all need to think about it for next y ear. Tressie Jean showed pictures that were taken of them on horseback riding and archery, also told U.S about the swimmin g and crafts. The youth club made a $50 memorial in memory of Bill Renfro. Their next meeting will be soon.

Brother Steinman reported on the Domino Tournament followin g our meeting. It was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Brother Milan reported he and Henrietta and her sister and husband, Annette and Bill Schwabowski of Chica go, stopped by the Supreme Lod ge and took a tour, with Brother Hanus, through the museum, which they•enjoyed and think Brother Hanus is the greatest for the fine job he has done and still is doin g . Dear Members and Friends: The Vestnik has so many items of interest that after I read it, I feel like c.‘erything has been said and I have very little to write about. (1 mean that to be a compliment to the Vestnik.)

Our lodge is doing just fine. We have no problems except a leak in the roof now and then. We have such wonderful people always willing to lend a helping hand and everything falls in place just beautifully.

This summer is hot and most of the time dry, but, when you do come to our lodge, bring a light jacket because you may get cold. The summer vacations will be coming to an end and soon schools will start everywhere in a few weeks. Don't forget to come back to the lodge, again. We hope to be seeing you around more often. I hope ever yone of you had a nice summer vacation and are ready to get down to work.

How about our youth club? Parents and grandparents, it will be up to you to get those children up here. In the past when 2 or 3 came, they seemed to have decided real quick that this was no fun. They will have to come on the same date in order to have a group large enough to do something.

When Dorothy Pflughaupt, District V youth counselor, was here, she encouraged an active youth club. The youth of today are the people who will he running our lodges in the future. If any of the parents wish to ask her questions, her phone number is on page 2 of the Vestnik under District Youth Counselors (District V). Our Vice President Jerry Dressler of Lodge 172, is the one who sent out letters to all those eligible for our youth club, which includes those from 6 years on up to high school (about 16) and that makes children eligible for summer camp, plus all kinds of activities in the local lodge and a big one is the college scholarship; also we have a beautiful young lady here who was elected youth leader. Her name is Bebe Hicks who has two children of her own. You may bring a best friend with you and they may decide to become a member, too.

Let's try and see what can be accomplished. Do not put this off.

Carla Krenek is in charge of our Lodge 172 Cookbook Project. They are selling fast. Right now we have a good supply and they make nice gifts for almost all occasions.

To celebrate the first day of summer, we have a social dinner and dance for Sunday, September 22nd; FREE to members, all others $6 and

$3. We will serve barbecue brisket with all the trimmings and coffee and tea, beginning at 1 p.m. Pastries will be sold. Variety music will be provided from 3 to 7 p.m. by The Vanek's Band from Victoria Let's all come out and have a good time at Lodge 172. We love you all.

What with the weather being so hot and humid, what a pleasant surprise it was to have so many members attend our August 1st meeting. President Ann Zvolanek led us in the pledge to our flag. A moment of silence was then held for Frank Sebestik, departed husband of Sister Mary Sebestik.

Mary also sent a note thanking us for the basket of fruit brought to her after her accident. (Mary broke her hip just a few days after the loss of her husband.) A thank you note from Elaine Skrabanek (for the basket of fruit) was read, and a thank you note from Frances Konakovsky (for the pot plant) was also received. We discussed, once again, the possibility of taking a trip on the "Texas Queen" at Lake Hubbard.

Alice Roberts asked if we wanted to wait until the weather gets cooler so it was once again tabled until our September meeting. Several sisters who had been on this excursion trip urged us to go and have a wonderful time. Let's all come and decide on the date to go..

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, August 28, 1985 Helen Vrla, Jr. and others from Beseda Group will be leaving for a trip to Munich, Germany to attend the Folk - Dance Festival where they will be performing at the Olympic Stadium.

Anne Zvolanek told us about her and Bob's recent visit to Czechoslovakia. They spent 24 days there visiting their relatives. They also visited with Dr. Bohumil Svoboda who presented a book to them , entitled "Texas" (Zane Osamele Hvezdy).

Ann and Bob attended the Apartakiada (Gymnastic Exposition).

Brochures were passed out so-that those planning to attend the Westfest would know the schedule of activities.

Lydia Alholm announced- the funeral services for the departed husband of Mary Renfro.

Sister Mary Sebestik will be calling on the hostesses who will serve our September luncheon. This month we brought our sandwiches and then enjoyed the cake leftover from our anniversary and also ice cream.

We had the following guests join us for our luncheon; namely, Roy Alholm, Frank Mach, Phil Reames, Alvin Elsik, Bob Zvolanek, Gilbert' Kalich, Charlie Kocian and little Jessica (Florence Peressenyi brings this precious little one to our meetings as she baby - sits with her).

Dorothy Reznik led us in singing "Jetelieek U Vody" and "Panenko Modrooka."

My apology for being late in reporting this month but 1 took on cooking at a day school where my little granddaughter goes. I obligated myself for two weeks and even though it is cooking for 24 to 34 children it does take my time buying and planning for their luncheons and snacks each day. It is rewarding when the little ones come up to me each morning and ask "what's for lunch?" Some even offer their suggestions what they like for dessert. While I speak of my granddaughter at this school, I'd like to mention that Natasha Tye won first place in a cheerleading contest they had during Olympic Week.

Remember our meeting will be held Thursday, September 5th. Gee, just think how fast the summer, flew by.

The signs of Christmas are already appearing in a few of the local stores.

Seeing' a decorated Christmas tree displayed in the middle of August is just a little far - fetched as far as I am concerned. Why not wait until at last Halloween is past?

Keep in mind that Czech Day at the State Fair will be held Sunday, October 6th. This should be a date you jot down on your calendar. A fine program is planned for your enjoyment and the State Fair is getting a facelift this year in preparation for the Sesquicentennial. See you next month!

Show In East Bell County Quilt

A country quilt show will be held in East Bell County September 7th and 8th at the Ocker Brethren Church Fellowship Building at Ocker. Each day the show will be held from 2 to 5 p.m.

A $2 admission fee per person will be charged and children under 12 years are free. This will include refreshments (coffee or tea).

Patterns will be available at a minimum cost. The following classifications will be shown; namely, Antique -- Historical (before 1933),

Patch Work, Applique, Friendship, Embroidery, Tied - / Tacked, Machinemade, Crib - Children's and Miscellaneous. Quilts will be labeled with the name of person, providing the quilt.

Love offerings are/ being 'accepted for a "Star" quilt that the members made and which the tickets can be gotten from any member of the Ocker Christian Sisters. The names will be placed in a /box and the drawing for this quilt will be held September 8 at 5 p.m.; you'd° not have to be present for the drawing. Other' door prizes will be given or drawn. Our United States is a nation of immigrants and its strength lies in its diversity -- a world of cultures melted into one social and political system.

Although our city streets all over the country teem with a babble of tongues since the great waves of immigration began in the past century, the rush to assimilate has produced a peculiarly U.S. phobia – fear of foreign languages .

"Don't worry, you will always find someone speaking English," acquaintances often advise travelers going abroad for the first time. The language barrier may merely be a nuisance for an ordinary tourist, but it could be a disaster for our businessmen and diplomats.

U.S. companies sometimes blunder around the world like buffoons: When General Motors promoted its Chevrolet Nova in South America, sales were a big disappointment.

Apparently no one at the GM Company realized that "No Va" means in Spanish "It does not got' With a hasty name change to Caribe. the car sales greatly improved.

Schweppes Tonic Water was, through inept translation, advertised in Italy as "Bathroom water "i a laundry soap advertisement in French - speaking Quebec in Canada promised users "Clean genitals!" Dear Youth Leaders: The project for September is about the founding of the Wesley Brethren Church, a cornerstone of the Czech heritage in Texas.

Wesley Brethren Church Most Czech immigrants to Texas were Roman Catholic. Of the ten to fifteen percent who were protestant, most were United Brethren. Their first church on Texas soil was erected at Wesley, ten miles southwest of Brenham, in 1866. The area had begun filling up with Czech settlers shortly before the Civil War. The community, first called Veseli, was soon anglicized to Wesley. The Reverend Joseph Opocensky arrived there in 1864 and began conducting services in private homes. The members felt that they were financially unable to provide a church building; so, Opocensky made an unsuccessful trip to Europe in search of aid.

A church finally was erected in 1866. The center foundation log was cut from a huge oak. It is still in perfect condition. A brass oil -

burning chandelier gave light for evening services. Until about 1900 the little building doubled as the local schoolhouse. The pastor usually served as teacher, and the lessons were copied on slates resting on the narrow, slanted tops of the pews. In 1883, the sanctuary was expanded by one - third, and a steeple with a bell was added. The night before the dedication of the bell, someone stole the clapper. Fortunately, the local blacksmith forged one on short notice and the service went on as scheduled.

In 1888, the Reverend B.E. Lacjac became pastor. It was he who painted the unusual decorations which are preserved on the walls and ceiling of the church today. Since 1901 the Wesley Brethren Church has been served by non - resident pastors; but the congregation has prospered. A new building was completed in 1963.

The old one is still used for occasional meetings. It is kept in good repair and is open to the public.

District II Meeting A Great Fun Day The fall meeting of District II was not that large in attendance (180 to be exact) but everyone in attendance enjoyed the games, drinks, food and fellowship. The afternoon was full of excitement and many, many free prizes were won.

Members came by to say they enjoyed it and let's do it again so it was very encouraging. We would like to thank all of the people for bringing sweets, salads and prizes, but we have a few special people and lodges to thank, namely, Lodge 15, Buckholts for a donation of $100 worth of groceries; D.I. Bohac for 1 keg, Willie E. Kohutek for 1 keg, Lodge 29 Taylor for 1 keg, and Sandra and Al Giarrusso for about $200 worth of lovely prizes of many different varieties including pictures, glassware, etc and a $25 donation for sodawater by Frank Klinkovsky.

A special thanks to all of you who helped with the games and to Lodge 29 Taylor members who cooked and prepared the meal for all of us at their cost and all work donated. Thank you,

Lodge 29, for being so gracious with your facilities.

The spring meeting date is tenatively set for the third Sunday in March at Lodge 18 in Elgin and the fall meeting date was changed to the third Sunday in September, however, no place yet decided. Once again, thanks to everyone who helped in any way to make our fall meeting and fun - carnival a success.

- The District II activities will almost all be over and school will start again, soon. We are planning a districtwide trip to Six Flags possibly about September 28th. The full details have not been worked out but all active youth members will be included on this trip and we may plan to have room for non - active youth and some adults, also, so, if you are interested, watch for details in the Vest nik or ask your youth leaders for more information. They should have the information about September 8th or 20 days prior to tenative date set. We are looking for an extra large turnout.

We had a penny carnival. The most fun game was the frog race, the frog I chose beat . the other frog. The shaving cream party was also fun. My Mom was a counselor and we creamed her. My Grandpa and Grandma Klusacek came to see camp. They got there when we were having the shaving cream party. My friend, Lori got Beama with some shaving cream.

She loved it!

We had fun dressing for the punk party. Everyone looked punky. I won third place.

I can't wait for camp next year. I hope all my new friends and more will be there.

Our next youth meeting will be September 8 at 2 p.m.

40 Swimming Party Held

Jesika Ann Tierce from Lodge 35, Elk was one of the pretty little girls who was a duchess. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David E. Tierce.

Lodge 35, Elk Youth Club Attended DYAD June 30, 4985, at Linden Hall in Elm Mott, was the spot where SPJST District 111 Youth Achievement Day was held.

For early arrivers, coffee and donuts were served while everyone signed up and got ready for events.

Lunch consisted of fried chicken, vegetables, tea and dessert. They started serving lunch at 11 a.m.

There were many entries in arts and crafts, baking, plus talent contests were enjoyable.

Winners of the pageant were Queen Lisa Reznik and King Paul Manak; both of Lodge 84, Dallas.

Oyerall, there was a nice crowd, eveiything ran smoothly and on time; it was A very enjoyable day for everyone.

Holds August Meeting Dear Members, Our youth club held its monthly meeting August 11, 1985. We discussed State YAD. Several of our club attended State YAD and good luck was wished to all of them.

The door 'prizes were won by Pat Schmidt and Denise Holubec.

Several of our members presented programs after the adult meeting. We also had a covered dish supper.

Our next social planned was a swim party for August 28 at the A&M Annex. at 6 p.m.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Attend Camp .

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our club of Lodge 47, Seaton had a monthly meeting August 4th.

We talked about camp; it is now over. Camp was more fun than I expected it to be. We rode horses and went swimming. In craft we made a bracelet, a sun visor and a cup we wore most of the time.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The youth club of Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje, held its meeting at the home of Mr. and. Mrs. Dwight Holub at 7 p.m. August 1, 1985.

The meeting was called to order by President Lori Holub. Jody Henderson led the pledge.

Treasurer Darren Dybala called the roll and gave his report.

Secretary Danny Borak read the minutes. New and old business was, discussed.

Birthdays were for Jared Dybala (a new member), Mrs. Janet Marek and Mr. Dwight Holub.

After the meeting: refreshments were served by Mrs. Holub.

Everyone had a good time swimming.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. September 5th.

88, Houston YC Has Banner Contest

District V YAD was held at Lodge 88, July 28, 1985. I was surprised to find out I was in 5th place as point winner of Lodge 88.

We have two Beseda groups going to State YAD, which I am in the Junior group. We all enjoyed the Talent. Thanks to Mrs. Dorothy Ptlughaupt, our District V youth counselor, and Mrs. Marie Stayton, Lodge 88 youth leader, for all their work on District V YAD. Good luck was wished to all Lodge 88 youth at State YAD. Lodge 88 Youth Club planned a bake sale for August 15th.

We are having a contest to design a banner for our youth club.
