Sister Stos was born at Ammansville (Fayette County), Texas 21 January 1889 to Roman and Josephina Bartos.

She married Frank E. Stos, an immigrant of Czechoslovakia, in 1910 at the age of 21. They made their home on a 100 - acre farm at Ammansville where she has since lived. Their union was blessed with six children.

Her husband passed away in 1971 at the age of 93. Her surviving children include Edward and Richard Stos of San Antonio, Agnes and Henry Stos of Ammansville, and Mrs. Millie Maresh of Houston. She also has 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Take notice of the change in interest rates, etc. from Supreme Lodge Leonard Secretary/Treasurer Mikeska. (See Page 3) *** Our general membership is, once again, reminded that there will be NO Vestnik published August 21st because the SPJST contract designates: No Vestnik published in second week in June and third week in August so we have only one more issue to print before State Youth Achievement Day, therefore, we encourage parents and relatives to remember to attend the annual event and witness the large number of our SPJST active youth from seven districts. The editor has been attending these YADs since 1969 and each year the competition in Crafts, Beseda, Talent and Royalty gets better where these youngsters exercise their talent and skill.

The local lodges should be proud of their youth leaders and youth clubs for what they have to contend with to achieve first, second and third place on the state level.

State Youth Director Sue Meadows has the State YAD agenda in this issue.

According to her schedule, the entire program should be moving along smoothly, especially when everyone attends to take charge of their duty.

The editor plans to be there, and requests the first place winners be available for picture taking.

The Czech language will again be taught in the Alief and Houston area high schools, according to instructors, Brother John Karas and Charles Heyda. Both of their announcements are in this issue, we suggest that this information be passed on to interested parties who may not be receiving the Vestnik. We hope there will be a large enrollment at both locations since Czech is the third most - spoken language in Texas. ***

The 9th annual Westfest will take place Saturday, August 31st and Sunday, September 1st at the West Rodeo Grounds, one mile south of City of West. Festivities are scheduled for all ages both days; 12 hours of continuous live dance music; 8 hours of folk dancing by several out - of town ethnic groups and some country/western flavor for the younger generation; Czech singing; gymnastic exhibition by the Southern District Sokol; plenty of delicious Food and refreshments, plus many other attractions.

An invitation is extended to all SPJST members and readers to Westfest and we look forward to seeing everyone, especially at the cultural section where Sister Maxine Sefcik and editor will be involved with the program both days from 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., which is published in this edition. ***

In this issue is a notice to all parents about immunization of their preschool children from the Texas Department of Health. Please note the 1,006 cases of diseases that could have been prevented by vaccination in 1984.

Read the article. Some parents are concerned about the DPT vaccine the (P) pertussis, however, children are in much more danger without the shots; that is a matter of record. School is closer than most of us realize so be sure to check your children's records. *** My first impressions of the new world will always remain etched in my memory, particularly that hazy October morning (in 1907) when I first saw Ellis Island. Passengers all about us were crowding against the rail.

Jabbered conversations, sharp cries, laughs and cheers -- a steadily rising din filled the air.

Mothers and fathers lifted up the babies so that they too could see, off to the left, the Statue of Liberty. This symbol of America---this enormous expression of what we had all been taught was the inner meaning of this new country we were coming to--inspired awe in the hopeful immigrants.

Many older persons among us, burdened with a thousand memories of what they were leaving behind, had been openly weeping ever since we entered the narrower waters on our final approach toward the unknown.

Now somehow steadied, I suppose, by the concreteness of the symbol of America's freedom, they dried their tears.

The new service enables banks to save the postage expense for the cancelled checks, and bankers say it is safer for customers to store old checks at the bank rather than have them travel through the mail and end up piled on closet shelves or in the attic. In place of the cancelled checks, banks provide customers with a detailed statement of checking account transactions. If you need a copy of a check, you can get it -usually without charge -- within a few days, the banks say.

Newsbriefs Evelyn Gebala, wife of SL Vice President Bernie Gebala of Temple, has undergone emergency surgery while vacationing in Amesbury, Massachusetts, July 23. She is recuperating in the hospital where she will be confined another week before getting back to Texas. Get - well wishes may be sent to her: c/o Mr. Branny J. ATTENTIONS Domino Players The 1st Annual SPJST Domino Tournament is now underway. All members interested in participating should contact their lodge officers.

15, Buckholts Changes Tournament Date

The really big news is: We had to change the date for the local Lodge 15 Domino Tournament to August 23rd starting at 6 p.m,; that is a Friday evening, so hope all of you can come.

Refreshments will be served. Be sure and come for the games and fun.

To Host District II Meeting Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge 29 July meeting was called to order by our President Edwin Adamek at 8 p.m. July 12th.

Representing the youth club Shanna Pasemann presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

We then held a roll call of officers;

absent were Ronnie Rieger, Elaine Machu, Jerry Tallas and Bobby Wuensche.

New members are Mitze Belle Nipps, Charles Ray Nipps, Patrick James Veselka, Jason Daniel Veselka and Tim Jezisek.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

President Adamek then welcomed our special guests President Howard Leshikar and his wife from the Home Office. He gave a brief talk about the Domino Tournament.

Lodge President Adamek also reminded everyone about our District II fall meeting that our lodge will host.

District II will provide the meat and everybody is being asked to bring a salad or dessert.

Youth Club Leader Melvin Steger reported 13 members attended the meeting; their social to Bastrop State Park was rained out. He reminded everybody about YAD and camp.

The Williamson County Grain Producers Association was held at our lodge hall in July and we donated the facilities of our lodge for their meeting.

Door prizes were won by Donna Pasemann, Ila Mae Jansky and Donna Jarisek.

Our next meeting will be held again FRIDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 9TH due to the District II meeting that we have at our hall the second Sunday, so please note the date change of our meeting.

Lodge 74, Lovelady Holds Successful Picnic Dear Members: Hi, I hope everyone had a nice July 4th. Lodge 74 had a terrific day; we had a barbecue and dance. The barbecuing started early July 4 at about 5 a.m. Thanks to our barbecue crew composed of Billy Bobalik, Steve West and Don McKenney who got things off to a good start. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. The barbecue was ready to be served at 1 p.m. Thq crew sweated things out in the hot sun just so we could serve on time. The barbecue lunch was served inside where things were quite a bit cooler.

Helping serve the food were Theresa Bobalik, Mildred Shmoldas, Terri Bobalik, Jodi Bobalik, Dot Smith and Judy Charanza.

The youth club held a cake auction in which they made a bundle. A lot of thanks to Mr. Kennedy for being such a great auctioneer. He really added a lot to the cake auction. The Lodge 74 Youth Club under the leadership of Sherry McKenney performed for us and our visitors from the Houston County Nursing Home.

Following the youth club performance we had a dance. Our bandlThe Po Boy Band from Trinity, Texas.was very good.

Thanks to a lot of our members, Lodge 74 is starting to see brighter days. Everyone is very proud of our youth club and they have become more supportive. The Lodge 74 competitors at District II YAD, walked away with a lot of glory. We are very proud of our youth and all of their accomplishments.

We invite all:members to bring out the family and their guests and enjoy our Saturday night dance. We have a recreation room that everyone can enjoy.

We also would like to extend our invitation to tlIzi members of other SPJST lodges. e are very proud of our establishments and are all uniting to make it a better place. Thanks and until next time.

Dear Members: Our August lodge meeting will be held Thursday, August 15 instead of the usual second Wednesday.

87, Temple To Meet

Lodge

Dear Readers: SPJST Lodge 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, July 12 at 7 p.m. with President Vlasta Jez presiding. The meeting was called to order.

Flag Bearer Jerry Valchar led the lodge members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The lodge members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased members.

Dorothy Chervenka read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read.

Various reports were given; old and new business was discussed.

The lodge members were so pleased to have our president back and see her improving so well.

Get well wishes are extended to Lad Zatopek and all who are convalescing.

Wilma Machalek and Mary Reznicek were guests for the evening.

Ice cream was served during the social hour and enjoyed by all .

Annie Plsek and Mary Zatopek announced a surprise for our refreshments for the August 9 meeting.

I hope everyone is enjoying a happy and safe summer.

88, Houston News Lodge

In Houston, Texas May 26, 1942 John Vasula and Bessie Gerlich were united in marriage. Forty - three years later, their family helped them celebrate this happy day. John and Bessie have three daughters. Jeanette, Gaynelle, and Marilyn,along with their spouses and two granddaughters and one grandson, hosted the anniversary party at Jeanette's home. The evening was spent visiting and viewing color slides of the family vacations in Colorado and California and opening gifts Anniversary cake and ice cream

4/VESTNiK—Wednesday, August 7, 1985 were served later. Bessie is a longtime member of the Birthday Club and John is an active Men's Club member.

Many more happy anniversaries to Bessie and John!

George Taake's' brother, Leon C. Taake, Sr., passed away July 18 in Houston. Our sympathy goes to George and Flordna and the other surviving family members.

We have several important dates to remember for the month of September. I know this is early but you need to mark the calendar and make your plans to be here at Lodge 88.

September 15, District V Family Day will again be held at Lodge 88. District V President Clara Broz is directing "A Womanless Wedding" and it promises to be bigger and funnier than the first one held here. That one was plenty good, but Clara always lives up to her promises so we'll look forward to this play along with the other things she has planned for the day. We'll keep you posted as the day draws near.

Then September 27 -- Homer Alexander, our Fraternal Affairs coordinator, has announced a country/western benefit dance with all proceeds going to help the abused children of the Harris County area.

Music will be by "The Texas Brew" who are playing at a reduced price as their contribution to this worthy cause.

Donations will be $4 per person and there will be door prizes and a fundraising project. Watch for more details concerning this event, also.

Saturday, August 10 "Donnie Wavra and the Hi - Liters" will play polkas and a variety of good music in the Chandelier Ballroom.

Friday night, August 16, "The Cosmopolitan Cowboys" will, again appear at our lodge. I heard nothing but good reports about the country/western music after their first appearance in July. They play all the old Bob Wills type music.

"Manny Green" and his big band sound music will play Saturday, August 17th. Admission to this dance will be $17 per couple and tickets are now on sale in the lodge office.

Sister Millie Manack is in Intensive Care at North West Memorial Hospital at this time. She had emergency surgery Sunday, July 21,to correct a giant aneurysm near her heart. She has been taken off the respirator so that information is encouraging even though she is still listed as critical.

District V YAD was a big success starting with the delicious spaghetti dinner served by the parents of the youth. The program was well organized by DYC Dorothy Pflughaupt and many nice door prizes were awarded to some lucky people.

This event was hosted by Lodge 88, July 28th. District V Director Jerry Prochazka and wife, Delores, District V President Clara Broz with husband, Johnny, and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and family were present to encourage the youth of our district. ST— REMEMBER! State YAD August 18 At Temple

Lodge 88, Houston Donates $500 To Pediatric's Clinic The Board of Trustees of Lodge Pokrok No. 88, Houston, approved a donation of $500 to San Jose Clinic to be used in the Pediatric Clinic.

A check in this amount was pesented

by Homer Alexander, chairman of the Child Abuse Committee, to Sister Mary Teresa July 22, 1985.

San Jose Clinic in Houston is dedicated to serving the needy without regard to race, creed, sex or national origin and in no way detracting from the personal dignity of the patient.

The clinic has been in operation for 53 years and has depended on volunteer help (at no cost to the clinic) from dentists, surgeons, general practitioners, nurses and other personnel.

Ophthalmologists and residents from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and students from the University of Houston College of Optometry examine patients for eye glasses and diseases of the eyes and The Houston Eye Fund, through their program "New Eyes For The Needy," also contributes.

Children under five years old receive complete physical examinations by doctors and physicians' assistants from the Health Science Center at Houston.

In the Pediatric Clinic, which falls under the University of Texas Medical School at Houston supervision, many of the children are found to be very anemic due to lack of proper diet. Dr. Margaret McNeese, chairman of the school, has been successful in getting a grant which helps feed these children with such foods as baby foods, milk, eggs and cheese. Immunizations are also given to these children as needed.

Many other medical services are offered free to the indigent -- these include, the maternity clinic; ear, nose and throat clinic; dermatology or skin clinic; surgery clinic; podiatry or foot clinic; adult medical clinic; dental clinic; diabetic testing and VD clinic; and orthopedic or bone clinic.

The San Jose Clinic receives 59 percent of its total operating costs from the United Fund and depends on the balance of the funding needed to come in from donations and grants.

There have been times when the pharmacy within the clinic has been unable to fill prescriptions because of lack of funds to buy medicines and medical supplies.

The amount needed annually just to support the pharmacy with the medicines and supplies is approximately $200,000.

Donations are desperately needed to carry on the wonderful work that this clinic does to help people who are desperately• in need of medical attention but are financially unable tc pay.

Sister Mary Teresa,who has spent 20 years as administrator of this benevolent organization,has dedicated herself to helping human suffering.

Her assistant, Mrs. Lynn Pizzitola, RN, is very understanding of the needs of the less fortunate and is an asset to the staff of the clinic.

Sister Teresa,who has so long served with dedication to the demands of human needs and with the pressures and stress that naturally accompany such a tremendous task, is being transferred to a lesser demanding job to duties at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston. Sister Margaret Bulmer is

taking over as administrator August 1, 1985.

The membership at Lodge No. 88 salute the staff, volunteer professional people and all who donate their time and efforts to ease the pain and suffering of those less fortunate of our community.

Saturday's dance will last until 1 a.m. Then Sunday, September 8,, starts off with a delicious Czech dinner catered by Bessie Petr from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., we have planned a commemorative program until 4 p.m., and polka dance will begin at 5 p.m. with music provided by The Lone Star Czechs from Ennis until 9 p.m.

Lodge 142, Houston July Meeting At 2 p.m. President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our meeting to order. All members and guests stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers and minutes for May and June meetings were read by Secretary Alice Jochen. The minutes stood approved as read. All officers' reports were given.

Under correspondence we had an acknowledgement of sympathy card from the family of Raymond Ward.

Also our secretary read a letter from District V President Clara Broz.

Our District V Family Day will be Sunday, September 15th. The dinner will be furnished by District V. All members attending are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert. For the highlight of the day, we will get to view "The Womanless Wedding." This should be much fun. Let's all attend this Family Day. We are sorry to report that Sylvester Janik is on the sick list. We hope he is feeling much better by this time.

New applicants were Robert B. Anglin, Craig M. Behrens, Gerald Garner, Wallace Garner, Peggy Garner, Kellie Garner, Kimberly Garner and Stanley Wishkoski. All members were accepted without discussion.

We welcomed Brother Jerry Prochazka, our District V director. He spoke on several items from the Supreme Lodge quarterly meeting.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or you are in line before registration time is over. We are asking that everyone cooperate because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent must be sure to bring their own props - including their tapes, cassettes and the equipment on which to play these. This is very important because we will not be able to furnish the necessary equipment.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but NOT names, lodges or district.

Be sure to get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club and your district are represented at this State YAD. Do mot let them down. If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

District II Fall Meeting/Fun Carnival The fall meeting of District II will be held Sunday, August 11 at Lodge 29, Taylor. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. and will be very short.

The youth will leave at 2:30 p.m. to the American Legion Park and will have a choice to go swimming or play 2 games of putt putt golf. We will plan to leave the park at 4 p.m. and go back to the hall where carnival games will be in'progress and we will play games, cake walk, wheel of fortune, bean bag toss, and have door prize drawings. Then about 5:30 p.m., we should be out of prizes so we will have our meal.

Remember all of this will be FREE but there is a slight catch to everything; each family is asked to bring PASTRY ITEM and EITHER a SALAD OR a VEGETABLE and 2 ITEMS from your pantry or whatever you wish to donate to the games. The district will have a lot of prizes.

Thirty - four youngsters from three lodges from District VI with seven chaperones enjoyed camp at Bastrop State Park held June 16th to 19th. The activities consisted of swimming, folk dancing, crafts, nature study and evening parties. The camp leaders were Michael Marek, Michelle Srubar, Kim Dornak, Jean Dorotik, Linda Treumer, Jody Henderson, Beverly Horelka, Janna Dornak, Landis Dornak and Charlene Mondrik.

Group No. 1 leaders were Anita Roye and Karen Kaspar from Lodge 30. Their group members in ages 6 trough 9 were Crystal Roye, Valerie Roye, Lenice Kaspar, Bradley Krpec, Dennis Vacek, Kimberly Vacek, Kristy Vacek and Jennifer Koutny.

Group No. 2 leaders consisted of Frances Motal from Lodge 32 and Vic Dybala from Lodge 40. Their campers were Stephanie Roye, Eric Motal, Jessica Koutny, Kim Kacal and Danny Borak.

Group No. 3 leaders included Janet Holub from Lodge 40, Vicki Dorotik and Kelly Korenek from Lodge 30.

Their campers were Lori Holub, Darren Dybala, Jennifer Dluhos, Kristi Korenek, Amy Kresta, Keith Kresta, Mary Ann Bartos and Suzie Meadows.

Games were led by Jean Dorotik and Linda Treumer from Lodge 30. Nature was presented by Lori Holub from Lodge 30 and Amy Kresta from Lodge 30. Jody Henderson, Charlene Mondrik and Kelly Korenek from Lodge 30 led the craft workshop.

Swimming directors were Vicki Dorotik and Kelly Korenek from Lodge 30. The cooks were Elsie Bidecka, Wilma Gaddis, Rose Mondrik and Georgia Henderson. The camp was directed by DYC Janet Marek and SYD Sue Meadows.

Each night a party was planned by Michael Marek, Michelle Srubar, Kim Dornak, Jean Dorotik, Linda Treumer, Jody Henderson, Beverly Horelka, Janna Dornak, Landis Dornak and Charlene Mondrik.

Sunday night was the Punk Rock Party. Everyone came dressed as Punk Rockers. The winners were Michael Kaspar, Crystal Roye, Stephanie Roye, Danny Borak, Landis Dornak and Beverly Horelka. In the adult division were Anita Roye and Sue Meadows as winners. The games Consisted of Human Bingo, Punk Rocker Parade, Punk Rock Football, Punk Dancing, and a Short Devotional.

Monday night was the Nerd Party which was exciting. A big Nerd Parade was held. Games were played which included group skits, relays, and folk dancing followed by a devotional.

Tuesday night was the TV celebrity night when the famous television characters appeared to entertain the youngsters on Bastrop Vision. Each character was played by a junior leader. I must say they did an excellent job. The hall was decorated as a big TV screen complete with stage bands played by Landis Dornak, Keith Kresta and Darren Dybala. Vic Dybala played the MC as Dick Clark. Soap Opera entitled, "Campside Fate" was played by Sue Meadows, Keith Kresta and Lori Holub. Video Luck Star representing Madonna was Linda Treumer assisting her were Kim DOrnak and Jean Dorotik.

To thrill the little folks, there was Mr. Rodgers played by Kelly Korenek.

Chaperone Charlene Mondrik is demonstrating a craft while Jody Henderson, Janet Holub and Anita Roye are looking 0i3.

Of course, a game show, called "Price Is Right" was played by Michael Marek as MC and contestants were Jennifer Dluhos, Stephanie Roye, Janet Holub and Valerie Roye. As usual the show was rigged.

Then the video "Cool It Now" by the NEW NEW Editions appeared.

They were Michelle Srubar, Jean Dorotik, Kim Dornak, Linda Treumer, and Michael Marek on the drums.

No TV program is complete unless you have "Dating Game." There was Kelly Korenek and Jody Henderson searching for a date. The eligible bachelors were Darren Dybala, Keith Kresta and Landis Dornak.

Of course, there was the News at 10 presented by the newcasters of Amy Kresta and Beverly Horelka.

The program was concluded with the singing of "We Are The Campers" to the tune of "We Are The World."

Even though we had an evening of

number at the

rain, the show was a success. It did not dampen our campfire plans. Using flashlights and red crepe paper with sticks, a make believe fire was created in the middle of the mess hall. Our friendship circle was formed and a devotional was held.

The group concluded camp with the ice cream they made earlier in coffee cans.

I would like to thank Sue Meadows for the assistance she gave me at camp.

A big thanks to the adult leaders who came and did their part as helpers and chaperones. The LITs who all worked hard to give the younger ones a good camp, also deserve a big pat on the back. The cooks did a great job keeping us full and happy with their delicious meals. This was a great camp!

Dear Members: Our youth club participated in the District I YAD held in Dime Box Sunday, July 21, 1985. It was a busy day for everyone. Everyone's hard work paid off; our lodge won several first, second and third places in Craft and Talent. Congratulations to all the winners. I hope everyone does well at the State YAD August 18th.

Our Scrapbook also won first place.

It was beautiful. Thanks to Youth Leader Renea Macik, _ Assistant Youth Leader Linda Faust and our parents for all their help.

Lodge 88 Youth Attends Camp

Guest Speakers SPJST State Youth Director Sue Meadows [standing], and Coach Meckel [seated].

The youth club sponsored one of your members, Donna Fritz, in the Burleson County Fair. Donna, along with John Rychlik, the youth club's vice president, rode on a float in the parade Saturday, June 15th. The float, in accordance with the fair's theme, "Texas Lives The Legend", represented Lilly Langtry and Judge Roy Bean. Wednesday, June 19, Donna participated in the Fair Queen's contest which was held at the Caldwell SPJST Hall. Each queen contestant was judged on appearance, costume, and response to a question that was not known to the contestants. Donna was named first runner - up and Sherry Stifflemire was crowned Fair Queen from the 16 contestants.

Congratulations to Donna for a job well done. (See Photos) The youth stayed busy during June and July preparing for the annual Parent Appreciation banquet which was held at New Tabor Hall, Friday, July 19th. The banquet was very nice and all did a good job presenting their parts. Youth members Holly Suehs, Mica Petty, Lana Urbanovsky, and Monica Paul each received Perfect Attendance plaques for being present at all meetings during the 1984 - 85 youth year. We enjoyed the speeches of our two guest speakers, Coach Meckel and Sue Meadows. The evening ended with a sneak preview of the talents to be presented at YAD. (See Photos)

Youth Achievement Day was held Sunday, July 21 and many members participated. New Tabor had 13 first place winners. Good luck to all of you at State YAD. See you at State YAD, August 18 at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.

Lodge 30 Youth Will Compete In State YAD Dear Vestnik Readers, The youth club members of Lodge 30 went on the SPJST District VI Educational Tour to Galveston, Texas, July 24th. We had 21 members going from the Taiton Club.

We first went to Sea Arama where we ate lunch. After lunch we toured the Bishop's Palace, American National Tower, The Railroad Museum, Candy Factory and last we walked along the Sea Wall.

I would like to thank Mrs. Janet Marek for planning our tour.

Dear Members, I am a member of Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

District V had fun at Camp Lone Star, July 21st through 24th. We enjoyed swimming, canoeing, working on crafts, hiking and archery. I liked archery best.

It was hot while at home but it was a lot of fun. We also had a cookout. We made leather wrist bands and decorated T - shirts.

I am looking forward to camp next year, again.

In Memory Of Uncle Marcak Henry William Marcak died Saturday, July 20, 1985 at the Four Seasons Nursing Home in Karnes City, Texas. He was 95 years, 5 months and 13 days old.

He was born February 7, 1890, in Nelsonville, Austin County, Texas. He was the youngest son of Josef Marcak and his wife, Terezie Siller Marcak.

When he was 6 years old, his family moved to Victoria County in the Shillerville community. His schooling was in the Shillerville School which was built by the early Czech settlers for a total cost of $47. As he grew into young manhood., he helped on the farm, worked for his oldest brother, Joseph B. Marcak, who ran a grocery store in the small town of Guadalupe, Texas. He worked as a grocery clerk, postal clerk, sold tickets at the depot, assessed taxes, worked in a gin and worked on books. These jobs were for several different employers.

In 1916, he moved to Karnes County and opened a store in the community of Bainville. The first years were lean ones. Through perseverance and hard work he prospered.

November 21, 1921, he married Carrie Michna and adopted her son, Marvin Richard. Marvin married Ann Shortner, December 29, 1940.

In April 1935, Aunt Carrie and Uncle Henry had an open house for their beautiful new home which is situated between Kenedy and Karnes City.

During those good years, Uncle Henry traveled extensively. He went to Czechoslovakia, France and Germany.

Hitler was poised on the Czech border when Uncle Henry was in Praha. Later he went to Peru, Mexico and Canada.

Aunt Carrie did not care much for traveling, but she did make the Canadian trip.

February 15, 1960, the store in Bainville burned down and one week later he opened Marcak's Grocery on Highway 181 on the part known as "Sunset Strip."

Marvin died May 19, 1968 and beloved Aunt Carrie died February 28, 1972. Uncle Henry retired at the age of 82 and concentrated on his interest in the stock market and visiting with his many friends. Ann came to live with Uncle Henry after the death of her second husband. She died . August 28, 1980.

10/VI STNIK—Wednesday, August 7, 1985 Uncle Henry was very involved in SPJST activities. He joined Lodge No. 127 in Guadalupe, Texas in 1911 and transferred to the Kenedy Lodge in 1927. He was on the Board of the first S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor, Texas. He served as vice president and then president. He went back 20 years later to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the rest home.

After his daughter - in - law, Ann, passed away, a friend of Uncle Henry and Aunt Carrie, Mrs. Rivers Garner, came to stay with him. She brightened up his last years.

Uncle Henry had three generations of nieces and nephews, all of whom loved and respected him He was the nucleus of our family and our patriarch. His passing leaves a void that never can be filled.

In January 1984, Uncle Henry put

together his memoirs for me. When they are completed, his survivors will have a history of this beloved pioneer.

At his funeral, Pastor Wilford Menke used excerpts from these memoirs for a wonderful sermon. District VII Director Thelma Hrncir also gave a beautiful reading at the services. We want to thank both of these fine people for their consideration.

May Uncle Henry rest in eternal and blissful peace.

Graveside services were held at Seaside Cemetery in Corpus Christi.

Pallbearers were Bruce Netek, Richard Netek, Larry Nemec, Patrick Nemec, Frank Nemec Jr., and Frank Burgess.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Knights of Columbus Council #3003.

Colonial Funeral Home in Robstown, Texas was in charge of arrangements.

The groom's table was covered in brown with a lace overlay. The groom's German chocolate cake had a fisherman on the top layer and tractors on the second layer depicting the groom's work and favorite hobby.

Miss Deborah Hejl and Miss Laura Quintero served at the groom's table.

Miss Karen Jez registered the guests.

Houseparty included Mr. and Mrs. Bob Persky, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Jungmann, Mr. Hugo Fuchs, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Roberts, Mrs. Eugene Hrabal, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kupper.

Providing music in the afternoon was Mr. Edvin Kubacak and Mr. Joe Vrana. Following the meal, music was provided by Fritz Hodde and the

Fabulous Six. The dance began with a wedding march led by James and Robyn Skrhak.

The bride is a graduate of Rogers High School and Temple Junior College with an Associates of Arts degree.

A graduate of Marlin High School, the groom is engaged in farming.

A rehearsal dinner was held the evening prior to the wedding in Westphalia, hosted by the couple's parents.

Following a wedding trip to Ruidoso and Carlsbad, New Mexico, the couple will live in Westphalia.

The double - ring ceremony took place at Visitation Catholic Church in Westphalia and was performed by Father Aleck Lazek. Mr. Thomas Pechal read the readings.

Guitarist and Vocalist Rick Fulker sang "All My Life," "My Only Love," "Only A Shadow" and "Hail Mary." Organist Becky Roessler and Trumpetist Fritz Hodde played "Trumpet Voluntary" and "Wedding March."

The bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Rudy J. Skrhak of Rogers. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Felix Bonkowski of Bartlett.

Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Macha of Marlin. His grandmother is Mrs. Adolphie Macha of Lubbock.

Maid of Honor was Cheryl Skrhak, sister of the bride, of Rogers. The Matron of Honor was Abbeye Zavodny of Temple. Bridesmaids included Miss Jane Fuchs, Mrs. Robyn Skrhak, both of Rogers and Miss Paula Macha, sister of the groom, of Marlin.

Miss Robin Skrhak Dusek and Miss Raven Skrhak Dusek of Mystic, Connecticut served as honorary bridesmaids. Flower girl was Miss Amy Stephens of DeLeon.

The best man was Phillip Macha, brother of the groom, of Marlin.

Groomsmen were Patrick Macha, brother of the groom, of Marlin, David Kilgore of Marlin, Chris Hrabal of Lott and James Skrhak, brother of the bride, of Rogdrs.

Altar boy and candlelighter was

Thomas Novosad of Rogers. Ring bearer was Nathan Hrabal of Lott.

Usher duties were performed by Terry Stephens, Tim Hrabal and the groomsmen.

Bringing in the offertory were Susan Novosad, Peggy Hrabal and Marsha Stephens, all sisters of the groom.

The bride, given in marrige by her father, chose a designer gown of candlelight silk with a beaded dropped bodice and Queen Anne neckline, puffed sleeves. The skirt was adorned with lace appliques. The hemline worn slipper - length in front was encircled in deep ruffles extending to a full Cathedral train. Her veil of illusion was held in place by a tiara of pearl pips and silk flowers. She carried a cascade of candlelight roses, rainbow color baby pom - poms and baby's breath.

The bridesmaids were attired in full length and full - skirt taffetta dresses.

The sleeves were puffed lace and the dresses had a lace underlay. Each bridesmaid was dressed in a different rainbow color consisting of blue, lilac, peach, pink, yellow and green.

Miss Valis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Valis of Victoria.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan A. Kovar, also of Victoria.

Susan Etzler, organist, played traditional wedding selections and marches. She accompanied Brett Hess, who sang "If" and "Climb The Hill Together," and Alan Jones ,sang "The Love She Found In Me" and "To Me." Given in marriage by her father, Miss Valis chose a formal gown fashioned of white silk organza over taffeta. *A yoke of. Swiss Schiffli embroidery, frosted with seed pearls and sequins, accented the flitted bodice. The short fluted sleeves were fashioned of organza. Motifs of

Venise lace, seed pearls and sequins enhanced the bodice. The lightly gathered skirt drifted into a chapel length train and was appliqued with lace. roses.

Miss Valis wore short white organza gloves, accented with fluted ruffles. A crown of pearls, silk roses and sequins caught her beaded veil of silk organza.

She wore diamond earrings and a diamond teardrop pendant, a gift from the groom, and carried a cascade of white iris, apricot carnations, snowflake mums, baby's breath and plumosa fern, tied with white satin ribbons.

Mrs. Mark Baros attended as matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Lisa Gay Key and Laura Kay Johnson, twin cousins of the bride, and Mrs. Karen Atkinson, cousin of the bride.

Terri Michelle Handcock, cousin of the bride, and Scott Prause, nephew of the groom, attended as flower girl and ring bearer.

Miss Kabela is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Kabela of Victoria.

Genie Littlefield, organist, played "Laxa's Theme," "My Love," "We've Only Just Begun," "Always and Forever," "You and I," "Wind Beneath My Wings" and the traditional bridal processional and recessional. She sang "God, A Woman and A Man," "The Wedding Song," "Give Them This Day" and "The Lord's Prayer."

Given in marriage by her father, the

bride chose a formal gown fashioned of white chiffon over taffeta. The fitted bodice held a scooped neckline, edged with Chantilly lace and pearls.

The sheer puffed sleeves extended to deep scalloped lace ruffles at the opera level. Chantilly lace and pearls traced the Empire waistline and the tiered skirt, bordered with lace at the hemline, which swept into a chapel length train.

The bride's double - tiered veil of silk illusion was bordered with lace and was caught by a Juliet cap, overlaid with matching lace, pearls and sequins.

Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.

month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals.

Ex.: Karel Dvorak, Wilsonovo nadrali, Dunaj, Anglian, Cechy, Smetanova opera, "Prodand nevesta", etc., and Nage rimsko-katolicka cirkev; Velikd slovanskd podporujici jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE—FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR—INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vain, Vág; Ty, Tviij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vann, they use a PLURAL VERB, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE ADDRESSING ONLY ONE PERSON. WRONG Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.

The pronoun jd is not capitalized: neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This IS done in English). Ex.: Mdm eeskou lenu. (I have a Czech wife). ,Mluvime Cesky. (We speak Czech).

Commas are used before and after a relative clause: Ztratil jsem knihu, kterou mi ddl.

—before and after a noun clause: Je dobfe, le tomu rozumig.

—before and after an adjective clause: Vgechen cukr. v gechna kdva.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, sel pryt.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded_ by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pracuj a ue se!" (In Czech, the first "uotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks— "").

Reunions Vyvial Reunion The descendants and friends of the Vyvial family will again gather at the Rosenberg American Legion Hall Sunday, August 11, 1985. Each family is asked to bring a prepared covered dish for the noon meal, and join in the joy of good fellowship. Refreshments will be on hand and on tap.

The annual reunion of Barta, Valenta, Havel and Vlasak will be held at the American Legion Park in Shiner, Texas August 18, 1985. All relatives and friends are invited and each family is asked to bring enough food for their family. The committee will furnish cups, plates and tea for the noon meal. A short meeting will follow. *** * ***** *-********** * WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT THIS IS THE SPJST NAME . . . "Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST)." The commonly used letters SPJST are the initials of the originally chartered name of the organization, "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas."

FOUNDED .

July 1 1897 in LaGrange, Texas, by early Czech pioneers of Texas in a time of real need for a fraternal benevolent society to provide mutual aid to its members and their families.

SUPREME LODGE • • located in Temple, Texas, and consists of five administrative officers and seven directors selected by the convention. They are solely responsible for administration of all business affairs of the society in accordance with the constituiton and bylaws as re-affirmed or revised by the delegates in each quadrennial convention.

PURPOSE . . . to encourage individual and group social responsibility; to provide economic security and benevolent assistance to members, their families, and other needy persons; and to encourage and promote American patiotism and the study and retention of the Czech language, traditions, and cultural heritage. . . . consists of approximately 60,000 active, social and juvenile members of both sexes, who have qualified for membership under the moral, citizenship, health and other requirements of the order. Contrary to common belief, membership is NOT restricted to persons of Czech descent.

ORGANIZATION . . . Non-denominational, composed of 128 local lodges which hold regular periodic meetings and are affiliated with the Supreme Lodge, and are subordinate to it. Local lodges have numbers and names which are either descriptive of their locality, patriotic, or historical.

We support two ultra-modern rest homes for our aged members, one in Taylor, Texas, and another in Needville, Texas.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT...

Sponsors a statewide volunteer project in support of protective services for children in cooperation with the Texas Department of Human Resources.

Many lodges have youth clubs which offer various activities of interest to the young people . . . camping trips, etc.

Our Real Estate Loan Department makes property loans to our members with prompt home office service.
