The SPJST district fall meetings are not too far off with some type of extra entertainment and/or recreation.

District 11 has scheduled their fall meeting in conjunction with a fun carnival for 0 to 100 ages to be held August 11th at Lodge 29, Taylor. This sounds like a lot of fun, especially with Brother Frank Klinkovsky who never seems to run out of energy supervising district youth activities. We wish District II a most successful meeting. *** This week SYD Sue Meadows is calling the youth leaders' attention to advise their Talent entrants and Royalty candidates of their allowed time in each category. This is very important because we would hate to see someone lose several points by the judges because their number ran overtime. We suggest the participants rehearse as much as possible and come to the State YAD August 18th in Temple like a "Trooper." We are counting on all of you. Good luck!

During picture taking of the first place winners only, the editor asks your cooperation to be available when your name is announced for the camera. *** In the weekly lodges' calendar, one will see something of interest occurring at most of the lodges and finds oneself wishing the events were not so geographically scattered. Of course, it is impossible to attend so many functions happening within a day or two, but your presence would be appreciated by the Lodge 92 members at Fort Worth, September 7th and 8th when they will be celebrating their "Diamond Jubilee."

For both days they have scheduled the following activities: Saturday Night -- Everyone will enjoy dancing to the Harold Strand Orchestra of Waco - West area.

Sunday -- Members will have an opportunity to eat a Czech dinner catered by Sister Bessie Petr and Sister Lil Hamusek (B&L Catering from Dallas). A program with guest speakers SL President Howard Leshikar and District III Director Sid Pokladnik is scheduled on the agenda, and a dance will follow with The Lone Star Czechs from Ennis playing variety music. *** Planning an extended driving vacation this summer?

Remember that driver fatigue can be a real safety problem. The National Safety Council suggests pulling into a rest stop every 2 hours to exercise, snack and rest a while. *** When swimming in unfamiliar waters, go in feet first. Do not dive.

That's 'the recommendation of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Diving has become the nation's fourth - leading cause of spinal cord injuries, the surgeons say. As many as 2,000 each year are caused by divers hitting the bottom or a hidden object. Nearly 98 percent result in permanent quadriplegia -- complete loss of use of arms and legs.

Boaters and others who must stay in close touch with weather reports may get help from a system of local radio stations set up across the country by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A total of 360 transmitters broadcast nothing but current weather reports and forecasts, 24 hours per day, reaching about 90 percent of the population. The broadcasts are sent over very high FM frequencies not found on normal radios. Special weather radios are sold at most electronics stores ranging in various prices. *** Holders of series "E" bonds now reaching maturity can continue to defer federal income taxes on the interest already earned by exchanging the old bonds for HH bonds. To do so, you must exchange them within a year after they reach maturity. HH bonds now earn 71/2 percent interest annually. The interest is exempt from state and local income tax, but it must be reported on your federal tax return each year HH bonds are available in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000. Exchanges can be made at any Federal Reserve Bank or hrough the Bureau of the Public Debt, Washington, D.C. 20239. *** Young people, divorced or widowed women and others who have never had credit accounts in their own names may have trouble establishing credit when they need it. The Federal Trade Commission suggests that anybody who doesn't have a credit history should begin to build one. if you have a steady income and have lived in the same area for about a year, try applying for credit from a local business such as a department store.

Or borrow a small amount from your credit union or the bank where you have checking and savings accounts.

As you pay off the loan, this will probably be reported to the local credit bureau -- starting the history building process. *** During the heat of summertime, it's up to your car's cooling system to keep the engine within the correct temperature range. The Car Care Council suggests this list for regular maintenance: Check the condition of the water pump. Inspect the radiator for corrosion or leaks. Be sure you have plenty of coolant. Look for leaking hoses and connections.

Tighten loose clamps. Check the condition of the radiator pressure cap and replace it if the rubber gasket is damaged. Caution: Never open or remove the pressure cap when the engine is hot. If the engine runs too cool the thermostat probably should be replaced. Check belts for wear and tension. Their usual life is about four years. *** Sales campaigns for houses, cars and furniture that feature "free" or bonus zero - coupon bonds can be potential traps for consumers, the North American Securities Administrators Association warns.

The group says promoters often fail to inform customers about the current value of the bonds, the tax consequences and the susceptibility to interest - rate fluctuations if bonds are redeemed prior to maturity. A recent survey found such promotions in 30 states.

Dear Readers: Our July meeting was called to order

by President David Vanicek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the flagbearers.

Get well wishes were sent to Johnny Svoboda who is in the hospital due to heart surgery.

David Vanicek, assisted by the Board of Trustees and Lodge 24 officers, burned the "Note" on the hall. It now belongs to the members.

Everyone should be proud of how far Lodge 24 has come over the years.

Visitors at our meeting were Henry Lynn and Frank Klinkovsky. Frank visited with 'our youth club and worked with them on the entries for District II YAD which was held Sunday, July 14th.

Thanks to the people who worked at :he 50 - year pin dinner. Everyone had a great time. Those receiving a pin were Mrs. Ella Bedrich, Mrs. Juanita Cabla, Mrs. Vallie Mae Hrachovy and Mrs. Vallie Klinkovsky.

Congratulations to all of you!

Our next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. August 14th. Please try to attend.

28, East Bernard Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: The agenda of Lodge Karel Jonas August 4th meeting, will have the scheduled reports plus some extra items. The meeting will start at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall.

The convening point for the social meeting and eats will be the buffet luncheon serving table.

The July 7th meeting was held the first Sunday. It started on time and lasted about an hour. All reports were accepted as given.

There were two motions made under old business. The first died for lack of a second. The second motion passed even though there were some "No" votes.

Under new business there also were two motions made. Here again the first died for lack of a second. The second motion passed with several "No" votes. One of these motions, that passed, was to donate money to the "Statue of Liberty Restoration Fund."

The door prize was won by Julia .Schank who, in turn, donated it to the special Kitchen Fund. There was a special prize of a "Jar Glass" filled with candy donated by Sister Ann Luquette. It was won by Sister Cecilia Valigura with a guess of 199. The actual count was 197 pieces of candy.

It is sometimes hard to visualize a host's and/or hostess' nightmare of not having enough on the table to eat.

In this light, this writer tried to visualize what the serving table would look like should the sisters of the lodge, one day, stop bringing their donations of additional food. The table would look horribly bare with only the paper napkins, plastic table ware, paper plates and the one and only platter of meat sandwiches, but, as always, Sisters Haverda, Janik, Schank, Kortis, Srubar, Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval did donate enough to fill the big void.

Thanks sisters, the luncheon was a success because you took time to care.

An additional thanks also goes to those who, without being asked, helped in the cleanup afterwards.

47, Seaton Domino Tournament Lodge

Members,this is to inform Lodge 47 members that the Domino Tournament will begin Friday, August 2 at 7 p.m. Be there at 6:30 p.m. for lineup.

There have been inquiries since the organizational meeting held July 19th. Both 42 and straight will be played according to rules set by Supreme Lodge.

If the tournament can't be completed Friday night due to late hours, the top winners will continue to compete after the lodge meeting Sunday, August 4 until winners are declared.

Lodge 88, Houston News There were a few happy anniversaries for the month of July.

Leander and Josephine Pflughaupt celebrated their 43rd, Josephine and Fred Buri their 47th, it was 35 years for Ruth and Bob Martinak, and number 20 for Doris and Henry Knapick. I didn't hear of any gigantic celebrations but I'm sure they all celebrated the happy day. Doris and Henry are recent retirees from his employment at Houston Lighting and Power. They Fought a "Fifth Wheeler" camper and have been taking it out every chance they get.

Rita and Homer Alexander took a long train ride for their summer vacation. They rode Amtrak to Stowe, Vermont. While there they visited the Von Trapp Lodge in the Green Mountains which is still managed by Maria Von Trapp and her son. They rented a car and made side trips into Montreal, Canada where they toured the Notre Dame Cathedral and Mary Queen of the World Cathedral which is an exact replica of the Basilica in Rome, then they drove on to Quebec City where a 600 - year anniversary of this city was being celebrated. Rita and Homer were amazed at the old buildings and original forts still in existence along the St . Lawrence River. They boarded another Amtrak train and started south with sightseeing layovers in New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago. All in all, they were gone two weeks and recommend traveling by Amtrak.

June 29th, three circles of our youth Beseda dancers went to Victoria, Texas for their Czech Day. The youth leaders eported a wonderful day and that the dancers did extremely well and were well received by the crowd .

Sister Annie Baethe is at home now after a hospital stay battling +p neumonia. Her daughter, Evelyn Nlikolas, reports she is doing fine.

Both Sister Annie and Sister Evelyn are longtime Birthday Club Sisters.

Polly Klessel broke her hip and was in Heights Hospital but is now at home recuperating. Polly's husband, Ed, is active on the Bingo Committee and they both attend most lodge activities.

Millie Manack has been in the hospital for extensive testing. At this time, no decision has been made as to surgery.

Siegried Auerbacher known as Ziggy to his many friends at Lodge 88 passed away July 8th, after a lengthy illness.

He was a social member for many years and enjoyed the Private Club and the Recreation Room. He was buried in Chicago, Illinois.

Edna Swanberg passed away suddenly July 9th. Sister Edna was very active in the Drummett Corp of the Shrine.

Mr. and Mrs. Dusty Runnels of Charlotte, North Carolina announce :he birth of 7 - lb., 9 - oz. Cody Garrett Runnels. Proud grandmother, Kathy Frefell, journeyed there to care for mother and baby. Father Dusty is a professional wrestler known as Dusty Rhodes. While in North Carolina, Kathy was treated to a chauffeur driven limousine trip to see son Dusty wrestle in a championship bout. After all the grunting, groaning, hits, and falls were over, Dusty Rhodes emerged the victor and came away with a hugh belt awarded to the World Telvision Champion. Needless to say, Kathy is very proud of her son and of her new grandson. Husband Mike stayed at home and attended to his lodge duties

and the housework and I know he was happy to seehis spouse return.

The Texas Brew plays in the Chandelier Ballroom Friday, August 2nd and Saturday, August 3rd the Knights of Dixie appear for your ballroom dancing pleasure. Sunday, August 4th, from 2 to 9 p.m., a BATTLE DANCE between LeeRoy Matocha and Bobby Jones will be held in the ballroom. You can enjoy all this dancing for the regular price of $4.

The kitchen will be open that afternoon and evening for the usual menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, etc. Plan a family or neighborhood get - together for that day. Remember guests are always welcome at our dances. The youngsters can go swimming if they don't care to dance with Mom and Dad. Make your plans now to enjoy this event. It's cool, friendly, and enjoyable at Lodge 88 and, best of all, it's close to home.

Tim and Rosalee Kostom are back from their trip to Europe where they spent three weeks visiting relatives in Czechoslovakia. Although it was cold and wet most of the time, the weather didn't stop them from viewing several very good musicals and an opera.

"Hubicka" by Bedrich Smetana, was presented at Narodni Divadlo. This national operahouse has been completely restored over the past four years to its original splendor. At the Music Theatre, Tim and Rosalee saw productions of "Hello Dolly," "Zeni tismev" and "Vinobrani."

Bill and Evelyn Vornsand, Mickey and Harry Rice, Tim and Rosalee Kostom recently attended the 19th Schwartz Family Reunion in San Angelo. This event was held at Wall Catholic Parish Hall where 300 family members and 25 guests were present.

Mickey and Evelyn are daughters of two of the original Schwartz children.

A 93 - year - old baptismal dress used by all 14 original Schwartz children was on display. This dress is to be presented to the Schulenburg Library Museum for a permanent display as Moravia is the homesite of the Schwartz settlement here in Texas.

STOP RESCHEDULE THAT DATE The annual picnic date has changed.

We were unable to secure a shelter at Bear Creek Park for the July date. The picnic has been moved to Cameron Employees' Recreational Facility Cypress August 24th, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Lodge An invitation is extended to all the SPJST members and friends throughout the state and out - of state, to our "Diamond Jubilee" of Lodge 92 which will take place September 7th and 8th.

The 2 - day celebration will consist of the following festivities: Saturday -- Dance with music by the famous Harold Strand Orchestra of Waco who will provide oldtime and ballroom music; admission will be $5 per adult.

Sunday -- Czech dinner (catered by B&L Catering of Dallas) from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; program, 2 p.m.; dance following the program, with music by the Lone Star Czechs of Ennis playing variety music; the admission for dinner and dance will be $6 per adult and $3 for youth (11 and under).

We hope you will reserve September 7th and 8th with Lodge 92 and help us celebrate our fraternal participation at 3316 Roberts Cut Off in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Board of Trustees had renewed the insurance on our hall and discussed replacing the air - conditioning soon.

Brother Jerry Tomastik resigned from selling insurance.

We decided to admit children 12 and under FREE if accompanied by parents.

Nine new members were accepted into our lodge, namely, John, Marcus and Katherine Hutka, Crystal Jennings, Drew and Kim Lanham, Dennis Tomastik, Nancy S. Neal, and Rolfe Gusselbrecht. Transferees were Stephanie Lawrence and Allison Shumate.

The Audit Committee reported that all books were in good order with a few corrections and to all chairpersons, you had a neat set of books. It made our job much easier.

President Hutka thanked Otis Beck and Louis Driska for meeting with the Tax Board.

Second Vice President Louis Driska made a motion to donate $1,000 from the Bingo Fund for a scholarship in Brother Willie Dusek's name.

Walter Jezek made a motion to donate $300 again from the Bingo Fund to the Little River - Academy Fire Department.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:16 p.m.

Dear Members: The July 10th meeting of Lodge No. 177, Academy was called to order at 7:32 p.m. by President Bill Hutka.

Before the meeting, the members were treated to a preview of the youth club program that was performed at District II YAD. President Bill Hutka asked all to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased member, Brother Willie Dusek, and asked that this meeting be dedicated to the memory of Brother Willie and reminded all about a dedicated member, a good worker and fine American.

A thank you note was received from Sister Annie Dusek thanking our lodge for the wreath.

Minutes from the last meeting were read by Recording Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe and approved as read.

Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting was held at the lodge hall Monday, July 15th. There was a covered dish luncheon before the meeting.

Vice President Pat Sill was still vacationing in Norway so she will have some interesting things to tell when she returns.

We all were glad to see Inez Greenlees improve enough from her surgery to be present at the meeting.

She thanked all of the members who sent her cards and telephoned her while she was in the hospital and at home.

The lodge also received thank you cards from the Star House for the donation in memory of Phill Boyle's father, from the Havran family for the donation to the Scholarship Fund in honor of Sophia Havran,. from the Shannon Smith family for the donations to help pay hospital bills in her battle with cancer, the fund has now reached $570.

Jerry Mikus thanked our members for the donation to the deaf organization and for sponsoring him in the Bass Tournament. Jerry showed his appreciation by building a turnable basket to be used in drawings for prizes and he also made a cover for the bingo board and Harry Musick painted the SPJST logo on it. It is a beautiful addition to the lodge hall; thank you Jerry and Harry, it is members like this who have made Lodge 183 what it is today.

Our lodge voted to send $50 to the Scholarship Fund in memory of Carrie Dvoracek (mother of Bernadette Pustejovsky).

We were informed that Walter Parson's wife is ill and under the

weather; the members send their best wishes for a speedy recovery.

The Christmas Party was moved to Sunday, December 8th becauie the 1st is the same weekend as "Thanksgiving," so mark your calendar and plan to be there, have a good meal, dance to some good music, and meet with all of your friends and maybe meet some new ones. For all of you who haven't seen ' the new building; this will give you a chance to see ,what a few hard - working members have done in Arlington.

One new member, Raymond Meur, was voted on and approved.- Welcome to SPJST Lodge 183! Raymond, we hope your stay will be long and a happy one; bring your friends and family to all the socials.

Remember, Saturday, August 17th with music by LAST CALL; this band has played at Lodge 183 before and many of you liked them and asked to have them to play again. Bring all of your friends and come dance to a good country/western band that will play music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Your favorite drinks and set - ups will be available at the bar; BYOB. The lodge wishes to send congratulations and best wishes to Leann Day and Patrick Mack who were married Saturday aftenoon, July 20 and held their wedding reception at the lodge before the regular dance; there was a large crowd present for the reception and dance. There will be NO regular monthly meeting in August due to so many officers being on vacation, but there will be committee meetings in order to keep everything running "smoothly.

There seems to be a conflict of interest for the upcoming Czechfest, because St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church is having a 2 - day affair at the church that weekend and,- since so many members of Lodge 183 would like to attend that, it was decided to move the Czechfest to October 12th.

This also will give the committee a little more time to plan things.

Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team Dear Brothers and Sisters: Thursday night, June 27th, we played BIOYA Team and we won by a score of 2 to 0. This was our tenth win in our league. The winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz who allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Don Jarma with a single, a walk and a double; Tom Stites, a triple, a walk and a RBI; Bart Walker, a single, a triple and a RBI; Paul Bartos with 2 singles; Dan Palm, a single; Kerry Goad, a single and Ben Downey, a walk.

Following are the batting averages of our starters through this game: Tom Stites -- .440 Ben Downey -- .429 Dan Palm -- .400 Bart Walker -- .370 Don Jarma -- .323 Danny Yates -- .286 Kerry Goad -- .268 Paul Bartos -- .222 Don Lennox -- .185 Tuesday night, July 2nd, we played Trans - Co., the game for No. 1 in our league. We played into extra innings before we finally lost the game by a score of 3 to 2. Mike Moeller hurled the first 7 innings, allowing 1 run, 2 hits, 7 walks and 3 strikeouts. Lionel Schulz came in relief in the 8th inning,allowed 2 hits and 2 runs. This was a real close game with good pitching fielding and fair hitting. It's just a shame that we had to lose the game.

Hitters were Kerry Goad with a double and 1 RBI; Don Jarma, a single and a walk; Bart Walker, a walk; Dan Palm, a walk and scored a run; Paul Bartos, a sacrifice hit; Don Lennox, a single, 1 RBI, and scored a run and Jim Zoeller had a walk.

By virtue of the loss, we cinched second place and possibly a tie for first; the other team had a couple of make up games.

We were entered in the Dallas ASA Tournament the weekend of July 19th and 20th, and if we were not rained out, the results will follow in the next report.

We will be playing in a summer league and our games will be at Samuel Diamond Ground Wednesday nights.

The Dallas City Playoffs are to be played starting Monday night, July 15th. Do come out to the games.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report

family in St. Louis, Missouri; Jeanie Mason, Rosie and Donald Steinman, Carrie and Joe Milan and daughter, Carolyn attended the XVI American Sokol Slet in Chicago and visited family members and friends; Bessie Brizina visited her daughter in Alabama; Mrs. Maria Prill, son, Charlie and family are traveling in Germany.

Members Merle and Frank Kovar, Jo and Frank Prochaska, Roy and I, along with a chartered bus from Dallas, attended the Granger, Texas parish picnic and the 22nd annual KZT Czech Day, July 7th. It was good seeing former Fort Worth friends, Mrs. Albina Naizer and her mother, Mrs. Zurovetz; also our Shiner, Texas friend, Felix Huebner. I must admit that being a native Texan, this was my first time to be in Granger, Texas, a lovely place.

Visiting Phyllis and Henry Seviek were Henry's two nephews, Patrick Nemec and his wife, Adrienne, from Houston and Vincent Nemec, his wife, Cynthia, and four - month - old daughter, Stephanie, from Bay City, Texas. It is always good to see these young people since their mother and I are lifelong friends.

Wedding bells rang for Madeleine Marshall and Jeffrey Ellard, July 20th in Houston, Texas. Jeffrey, his grandparents, Joe and Mary Manda of Dallas,were on the European tour with Roy and I in 1982. Many of the tour people witnessed a beautiful wedding at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, followed by a reception and dance at the Meyerland Club. We wish many years of happiness for this couple.

We express our sincere sympathy to Mary Sebestik on the loss of her husband, Frank, who passed away July 6, 1985; also to Christine Zich and her family for the loss of her father, Mr. John Slovak, who passed away July 13th, and to the family of Sister Mary Martina Kozelsky of Lisle, Illinois, who passed away June 28th at the age of 90 years. Sister Martina had taughi at St. Thomas Parochial School in Fort Worth and many of us will miss her when we make our visits in Lisle.

To all the Texas polka fans who will be attending the annual Pla - Mor Czech Polka Fest in Lincoln, Nebraska, August 9th, 10th and 11th, have an enjoyable safe trip and a great time.

Our most welcome surprise after returning from Houston over the weekend was 21/2 inches of rain collected in our rain gauge. For the month of July this is unusual in the Colleyville area.

children who went to the District III YAD competition in Waco, Texas and competed with others to go to State YAD at Temple. We are not as large as some of the other youth groups, but we are proud of those who made an effort to win.

Our winners in District III were Holly Hubenak, who won first in painting, second place in Talent (speech). Staci Hubenak got first place in Home Arts (desserts), second in Individual Talent (clogging) and third place in Royalty (queen). Kell y Kubala got third place in Handicraft (on a bird house), and Brandy Kubala received second place in Home Arts (on ice cream cone cup cakes).

Our Ladies' Circle opened with President Florence Greer, Vice President Dona Hubenak, Secretary Frances Grizzard, and Hermina Cihacek, substituting as treasurer for Evelyn Spacek who couldn't attend because of her husband's illness.

Our president welcomed our visitors who were Ann Polk from Pennsylvania and Imogene Reaves of Euless, Texas. Ann is in the process of moving to Houston where she will be able to visit with us more often. We were happy to have our visitors and hope they will visit us, again.

Lillie McMillen gave • the Sunshine report. We were sorry to hear about Bennie Bartek who fell and ws taken to the hospital. We were also sorry to hear of Christine Zich's father, Mr. Slovak, who passed away recently.

May he rest in peace.

Joyce Tesar announced that the Czech Mates would play for a dance from 5 to 9 p.m. after our - lodge meeting, Sunday, July 14th. She also urged us to remember Saturday, September 7th and Sunday, September 8th when we will celebrate SPJST Lodge 92's "75th" anniversary. We extend invitations to all our lodges in Texas to come and help us celebrate.

Maria Prill and grandson, Chuck Prill, wife, and two great grandchildren, Keith and Charley, left for Europe July 11th and will return July 28th. We wish them an enjoyable trip.

We wish to congratulate Mac and Lillie McMillen on their "50th" wedding anniversary and Joe Paul and Sandy Hubenak on their "25th" anniversary. We all enjoyed both celebrations.

Dona Hubenak gave a nice talk on "Down Memory Lane." She showed us treasured souvenirs that were given to her by friends from long ago. She also read a very interesting and amusing letter presented by Frances Grizzard. Ann Polk told about how she treasured a ceramic planter which was shaped like some small shoes that was given to her when her boy was born. She, in turn, handed it down to her son when he had a son.

Letter To The Editor The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT) 3218 Hunters Glen Missouri City, Texas 77459 July 22, 1985 Mr. R.J. Sefcik Vestnik Editor P.O. Box 85 West, Texas 76691 Dear Mr. Sefcik: Vestnik recently published two articles reporting the financial support recently given by SPJST to the two high schools in Texas offering Czech language courses.

The Supreme Lodge and membership should be commended for its leadership role in promoting the preservation of the language at this level. Through these types of efforts the teaching of the Czech language can be expanded to other high schools in areas with large Czech - American populations.

The administrators and teachers at Flatonia and St. John's in Ennis alsc need our continued financial and moral support. Encourage your children to study the language of our ancestors. The knowledge of a foreign language is more important than ever in our present age where international problems and disputes abound. The knowledge of foreign languages and cultures can remove or at least mitigate the misunderstandings that cause international tensions. Knowing a second language is important to our national welfare and should be more strongly supported by our educational institutions.

SPJST is certainly doing its part!

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or you are in line before registration time is over. We are asking that everyone cooperate because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent must be sure to bring their own props - including their tapes, cassettes and the equipment on which to play these. This is very important because we will not be able to furnish the necessary equipment.

Be sure to get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club and your district are represented at this State YAD. Do not let them down. If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

See you at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center August 18th. This is a nice spacious facility and we believe all of you will like it.

There are motels in the Temple area offering nice accommodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD. We are .starting a little earlier this year and hope to be able to finish by '7 p.m. or as soon thereafter as possible so that people needing to travel a distance will not be inconvenienced.

You also will notice that the lunch hour overlaps some of the activities.

This is regrettable, but there are many phases to cover and, as stated, we hope to be able to finish at a reasonable time. A change in the schedule this year is the presentation of awards throughout the day instead of the

August Meeting Suggestions Dear Youth Leaders: I know you all are very busy with summer activities - camp, YADs, summer trips and family vacations.

I hope the following meeting suggestions will be of help in planning your meetings.

Remember that the State YAD is August 18th at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Beseda registration will begin at 10 a.m. and other contestants will begin registering at 10:30 a.m. Watch the Vestnik for further details. Hope to see you there!

Fraternally, Sue Meadows State Youth Director *** GAMES Ring On A String Players form a circle holding a long string which is tied together at the ends. They pass their hands back and forth on the string, passing a ring from one to the other. A player in the center tries to guess who has the ring. He may stop the passing at any time to make a player lift his hands. If the player has the ring, he becomes "It." Another variation would be to use a Life - Saver mint in the same manner.

Magnetism A relay game which will produce many laughs is "Magnetism." Divide the group into two or more teams, depending on the number of people present. Each player is given a straw.

The lead person on each team is also given a small piece of Kleenex or other cleansing paper tissue. By drawing in his breath, the leader can hold the tissue on the end of the straw and pass it on to the next teammate. The idea is to pass the tissue to each member of the team. If the paper falls on the floor, it must be picked up the same way, by drawing breath through the straw and then passed to the next player. The team which finishes first wins. If there are only a .few people playing, the paper can be passed back in reverse order.

CRAFT JEWELRY.... from Vegetables and Seeds.

Make the necklaces pictured, or create other combinations of your own. Long necklaces can be simply tied together. For shorter necklaces, tie on necklace clasps to each end, tying the thread around the clasp 7 or 8 times.

Bread Jewelry Cut bread into desired shapes. Use different types of bread (rye, white and whole wheat) for different colors and textures.

Cut a "Mini - Slice" (or use a cookie cutter for other shapes) to make a pendant. Cut bread cubes for "beads" and use bone slices or straws for spacers. It is best not to string the bread cube "Beads" on the part of the necklace that will go around the back of the neck. String the necklace, and let dry thoroughly. When dry, paint a brown crust on the bread slice with acrylic paint. Coat the entire necklace with a plastic spray.

Dried Vegetables Cut carrots and turnips into strips, about 2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide, or cut them into small cubes. String the vegetables with a needle and strong thread while they are fresh. Use beads, bone slices or seeds for variety or as spacers, if you wish.

If you make the entire necklace of vegetable strips, make it about one third longer than you want the finished

size. Let the necklace dry two days or longer, depending on the thickness of the pieces. When it is thoroughly dry, tie the ends together, or add a clasp.

Seeds Use pumpkin, melon, sunflower and cucumber seeds. Before stringing, soak the seeds in warm water until they can be pierced with a needle. If the seeds are inclined to split when you pierce them, insert the needle at an angle, as shown; discard a-Bp-seeds that split.

String the seeds, but don't tie the ends until the seeds are completely dry since the seeds may continue to shrink until they have dried completely.

Imitation Coral Expensive - looking "Coral" necklaces can be yours if you have a can of whole cloves handy! Soak the cloves in warm water for a few hours.

Use your fingernails to pinch off the head of the clove, as shown. Cut some of the cloves so that the "Coral Branches" will vary in length.

Use ,a fine needle and strong thread for stringing, inserting the needle into the side of the clove, as shown. String the necklace; then let it dry thoroughly. Spray paint with a flat enamel for a realistic look. If you want to leave the cloves brown, spray them with a clear plastic spray.

August Vestnik Project - Czechs And The Civil War CZECHS AND THE CIVIL WAR The Czechs were generally opposed to slavery Although a number served in the Confederate Army, most were recent immigrants to Texas and had little or no stake in the war. In addition, many had left their homeland to avoid serving in the Austrian Army, and had no burning desire to serve in anyone's army. Many escaped conscription into Confederate service by hiding in the woods and river bottoms, sometimes for as long as two or three years. Others, who were drafted deserted to the Union forces.

Czechs frequently avoided military duty by serving as teamsters, hauling Confederate cotton to. the Mexican port of Matamoros. On each of these trips there would be six or seven wagons, each drawn by four or more yokes of oxen. The sturdy animals

moved so slowly that, on many occasions, the teamsters - after a hard day's travel - could look back and see their previous campsite. The trip was long, slow and dangerous, and many Czech drovers were never heard from again.

With their menfolk away - fighting, hauling cotton, or hiding from Confederate conscription parties - the women assumed all the duties of managing a farm. They tilled the fields harvested the crops and somehow managed to keep their families together. During the Civil War, even the necessities were almost non existent. Many of the families lived on homegrown bacon, homemade molasses, and home ground cornmeal.

Sugar and coffee were unobtainable; roasted and ground corn or acorns were used as a replacement. At times even bacon and lard were scarce, and beef tallow was substituted.

From The District Youth Counselor District II Youth Camp To all leaders, chaperones and campers planning to attend District II camp, camp will start Friday, August 2, 1985 at Camp Val Verde for the teenage group of children ages 12 through 16. This group of children should arrive at about 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 2nd. Their first meal at camp will be the noon meal at 12:30 p.m. This group will go home the morning of August 5 at about 11:00 a.m.

The junior group campers (ages 6 to 12) are to arrive at about 10:30 a.m.

August 5 and they will be ready to go home at 11:00 a.m. August 8th.

The activities for the teen group will start at 2 p.m. Friday, August 2nd.

The morning break will include cookies and punch or Gatorade and is furnished by District II camp. The afternoon break is soda pop and the children must buy their own; the price is 50 cents in cans this year so they should have some money for drinks.

If you have any questions, please ask your youth leader or feel free to call me.

Parties are planned for each night.

We will have flag ceremonies twice daily and there should be a patriotic song or a poem in addition to the pledge. Each club will have one of these ceremonies for each group so plan what you will do. Table grace will also be given by the youth at each meal.

The shortest way to get to Camp Val Verde is to take Hwy. 36 West out of Temple, go about 6 miles, take Hwy. 317 to the right toward Moody and go straight through Moody and to McGregor, go to the second red light in McGregor and turn right; this will be Hwy. 84 heading east toward Waco, go about 8 miles to the Val Verde Exit to the left, follow that road and when

you'tome to a "T" turn right and then take the 'second road to the left and that takes you into camp. Stop at the dining hall for further instructions.

It seems that I am running out of time this year trying to get this in the Vestnik so I hope you will come to camp and see what else was planned this last week.

The schedule planned for this year will be similar to last year for the junior category since we will have to divide them into five groups and plan to give them a little time to rest during noon. If it continues to be so hot we may have to slow down our activities.

We certainly hope all of you who sent in applications will be able to attend because we are having a place reserved for you in your group and your cabin and we have plans to have a great camp.

The juniors should bring some pennies for the penny carnival and both groups should bring some old junk clothes for a Punk Party. Game parties and a hayride are on the schedule for both groups.

The teenagers will plan their own game parties. They also may have a choice to camp out one night at a new primitive camp site. There are lots of good things in the planning stage.

Don't miss out --- be there.

Let's all remember our special first annual fun carnival and District II fall meeting August 11th at Lodge 29, Taylor beginning at 2 p.m. This fun carnival also will be.very different and lots of fun. Plan to be there.

VI YAD Results District

Twenty - seven SPJST youth members from 3 lodges entered 96 craft items in the annual YAD held at Taiton Community Center Sunday, July 14, 1985, with Lodge 30 hosting the event. Taiton Lodge 30, El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40, and Victoria Lodge 32 were in attendance.

Placing first in the Individual Talent Group were: (Ages 6 - 9) - Lenice Kaspar (30) (Ages 10 - 12) - Stephanie Roye (30) (Ages 13 - 14) - Lori Holub (40) (Ages 15 - 17) - Jean Dorotik (30) Others entering in the Individual Talent were: (6 - 9) - 2nd Valerie Roye (30) (6 - 9) - 3rd Jeanine Dorotik (30) (10 - 12) - 2nd Jessica Koutny (32) (13 - 14) - None (15 - 17) - 2nd Michelle Srubar (30) Group Talent was won by Lodge 30 in the Junior Division. Jeanine Dorotik and Valerie Roye did a tap dance. The Senior Group Talent from Lodge 30 did a dance to the song, "Running With the Night." The dancers were Jean Dorotik, Michelle Srubar, Linda Treumer and Kim Dornak.

In Royalty competition Jo Danette Henderson was crowned queen for District VI. Her duchess is Sharon Borak. Michael Marek was crowned king. His duke is Danny Borak. The youngsters are from Lodge 40. Jo Danette's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Henderson. Michael's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Marek of Pierce.

Sharon's and Danny's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Borak of Danevang.

They are all members of Lodge 40.

Beverly Horelka was crowned runner - up. Her duchess was Jennifer

Koutny. They are members of Lodge 32 in Victoria. The parents are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Horelka and Mr. and Mrs. Julius Koutny.

Kelly Korenek served as mistress of ceremony. Miss Mary Mrnustik gave the welcome. Sue Meadows and Matt Vanek gave the point awards. Mrs. Janet Marek and Mrs. Anita Roye presented the Craft and Talent awards.

The Tabulation Committee consisted of Mrs. Pete Merta, Mrs. Larry Dornak, Mr. John Motal, Mr. Adolf Motal and Matt Vanek.

Mr. Julius Koutny served as photographer.

Judges for the event were Mrs. Clara Wied, Mrs. Robert Fass, Mrs. Grace Glaze, Mrs. Judy Korenek, Mrs. Leona Macha, Mrs. Jo Ann Luker and Mrs. Viola Naiser. These ladies did an excellent job.

As a District VI youth counselor, I would like to thank the Lodge 30 members for the fine job they did in preparing the hall for the boys and girls. Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, youth leader, did an excellent job with her members. A special thanks to all the other ladies who helped when you were asked to do a job. All these little things help make a day such as this a success.

VII YAD Results District

The District VII Youth Achievement Day was held July 7, 1985 at Lodge No. 79 in Corpus Christi.

There were 28 youth members participating in 78 craft entries, 9 Individual Talent numbers, 5 Group Talent events, and 3 Queen candidates in the Royalty competition with 3 duchesses.

Youth Leader Kaye Majek and those from Lodge 79 who assisted her are to be commended for a gracious hosting of this event. A lot of planning and hard work goes into the preparation of the food, setting up the hall and getting judges.

A special thanks is extended to all who had a part in this day, the youth parents, judges, and all the people who helped with registration, tabulation, craft display, and those who helped on the stage. Special thanks to the MC Bob Bayer, photographer Sue Meadows and her assistants. Thanks to Joe Landis, our State King, for a splendid job as MC of Royalty and District VII Director Thelma Hrncir for introducing the Royalty candidates and their parents.

47, Seaton Youth Club Meeting

July 16, 1985, the Dime Box Youth Club held an outing at Riney Spacek's tanks. We had a hayride to the place, and when we got there we held a short meeting.

Dear Members and Friends, We held our meeting July 7, 1985.

We had 15 members and 2 visitors present. Our visitors were Teresa Jenkins and Jason Hogan.

We discussed District II YAD and camp. YAD was held July 14th.

Representing our lodge in Individual Talent was Melanie Koslovsky who sang a song in ages 6 to 9 category.

After the meeting, youth members made posters for the mother lodge and for the booths for the Baseball Tournament.

Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Receive Many Awards Dear Readers: July 21, 1985, the youth club of Lodge 39 participated in District I YAD. We were very fortunate to have had many first, second and third place winners.

I was lucky and won first place in ages 10 - 12 in Individual Talent, and Brian Faust and I won first place in the Junior Group Talent division (6 - 12).

I am looking forward to the State competition at Temple in August.

Lodge 47 Youth Club Meets Seaton

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 47, Seaton, had our monthly meeting. July 7th.

The officers were installed by Mr. Frankie Klinkovsky. He also told us about the District II fall meeting to be held in Taylor, August 1 lth; that day, there will be a fun carnival. It sounds like a lot of fun for all the family members. We also will be able to swim or play putt putt golf.

YAD in Elgin was a lot of fun. I won first place in Crafts. Now comes State YAD which will be fun, too.

Camp Val Verde is almost here. It sounds like so much fun. This will be my first time going to camp and I can hardly wait. I hope to meet a lot of new friends from other youth clubs.

Our next meeting will be August 4 at 2 p.m.; that's the day before we go to camp. I hope to see you at the meeting and at camp, too.

Expression Of Sympathy On behalf of the officers and entire membership of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, deepest sympathy is expressed to the bereaved family of RAY B. RABROKER, SR., age 63, who passed away July 9, 1985 in a Temple hospital.

Brother Rabroker was born in Westphalia and was a lifelong resident of the community. He was the owner and operator of the Westphalia Market and was also engaged in farming and ranching.

Brother Rabroker was a veteran of World War II and organized the Falls County Youth Fair. He served three terms on the Westphalia School board and was a member of the Church of Visitation.

Survivors include his widow, Evelyn Rabroker of Westphalia; three sons, Raymond Rabroker, Jr., Timothy Rabroker and Patrick Rabroker, all of Westphalia; two daughters, Jean Herzog and Angela Rabroker, both of Westphalia; three brothers, Robert Rabroker of San Antonio and Monsignors George Rabroker of Anahuac and Ed Rabroker of Waco; and three sisters, Mrs. Herman Huser of Westphalia, Gladys Doskocil of Arlington, Mrs. Frankie Ehler of Cameron; and four grandchildren.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. July 10 in the Hoelscher Funeral Home in Rosebud. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. July 11 at the Church of

Wednesday, July 31, 1985—VESTNiK/11 Visitation in Westphalia with Monsignors George and Edward Rabroker officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Westphalia.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of the members of Lodge No 1, Fayetteville, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother JOSEPH J. TAPAL, 68, who passed away Wednesday, July 17, 1985.

Brother Tapal was born in La Grange, Texas, August 13, 1916 and resided in Fayetteville, Texas until he moved to Houston. After 39 years of service with the Houston Independent School District, he retired in1977. He was the principal of Houston Vocational Technical High School, the first vocational school in HISD and retired as Executive Director for Occupational and Continuing Education.

He was a monber of First United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite (32nd Degree).

He was preceded in death by his father, Josef Tapal; mother, Annie Tapal and sister, Vlasta Gaither.

Survivors include his widow, Miriam E. Tapal; son, Joseph J. Tapal, Jr. and wife, Carol; grandson, Joseph J. Tapal III and wife, Lynn; granddaughter, Christine E. Tapal; nephew, Joseph R. Gaither and wife, Linda; nephew, Gale H. Gaither and wife, Mary; niece, Ann Davis and husband, Jim; plus others April Davis, Stephanie Gaither, Becky Gaither, Laura Gaither, Amy Gaither and Eric Gaither.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 19, at the Chapel of Settegast - Kopf with Dr. Boyd Wagner officiating. Interment was in Fayetteville City Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

The bride, a graduate of Rogers High School and Temple Junior College with an Associate of Arts degree, is manager in the bookkeeping and customer service department of Interfirst Bank Temple, NA. A graduate of Rogers High School and TSTI (Texas State Technical Institute) with a degree in Diesel Mechanics, the bridegroom is a self employed farmer.

The couple's parents were hosts for the rehearsal dinner in the home of the bridegroom's parents.

Golden Anniversary Bill Sill and the former Mary Mixon were married July 7, 1935 by Father Brady at the St. Edward's Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas. Their reception was held at the home of the bride's parents.

The bride's parents were the late Robert and Hattie Duron and the groom's parents were the late Alois and Anna Sill.

A luncheon honoring the couple on their (50th) golden anniversary was held at the Melrose Hotel in Dallas, July 7, 1985; fifty - three guests were in attendance.

The couple's three sons and their wives hosted the party, namely, Bill and Jean of Chester, New Jersey; Robert and Pat of Arlington, Texas; and John and Cathy Sill of Segoville, Texas.

Bill is a retired butcher, having worked at several packing houses and meat markets in the Dallas area. Mary is a homemaker.

Their six grandchildren are Leslie, William, Jr., Robert, Jr., Shelby, Paul and Christi. The couple also has one great - grandchild, J.W. Collins.

The entire family are members of the SPJST; most belong to Lodge Pokrok No. 84 in Dallas, and others belong to Lodge 183, Mid - Cities at Arlington, Texas. Bill and Mary Sill received their 50 - year membership pins from Lodge 84.

Haisler Named To Engineering Post Dr. Walter E. Haisler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Haisler of Temple, has been named head of the Texas A&M Department of Aerospace Engineering.

Brother Haisler, A&M's Halliburton Professor of Aerospace Engineering, has served as interim department head since September. He is nationally recognized for his research in finite element structural methods, nonlinear constitutive modeling and the development of numerous finite element computer programs for nonliness stress analysis.

Dr. Haisler, his wife, Delores, and children David, Susan, and Paul reside in College Station, Texas.

Dr. Haisler's children are the fifth generation in the Haisler family, who are members of SPJST.

Texas just returned from a trip, that she was selected for by the Girl Scouts

of the USA. She attended the Saddle Straddle from June 30 to July 14 at the Girl Scout National Center West, a 14,000 - acre site bordered by the Big Horn National Forest near Ten Sleep, Wyoming. Only 40 girls between the ages 14 and 18 from across the United States were selected to participate in the two - week event. Miss Haisler was the only participant from Texas.

Susan is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Chervenka of Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Haisler of Temple. Her parents, Dr. Walter and Mrs. Delores Haisler, and her brothers are all members of SPJST Lodge No. 47 at Seaton.

For people entering New York Harbor through the Verrazano Narrows, Liberty appears to stride across the water in greeting, never quite turning her gaze from newcomers. This was the view of Liberty as she was seen by over seventeen million immigrants at the end of their journey from the Old World to the New. Attention fixed on the Statue, they may not have noticed the low silhouette of Ellis Island merging into the New Jersey mainland beyond. But one would need to have been one of those seventeen million to sense the importance they soon attached to the buildings in which officials decided whether new arrivals could enter America.

For all those newcomers, Liberty and Ellis Island were fused into a single impression of a memorable day.

In 1954, work was begun to create a museum at the base of the Statue to commemorate the contribution of immigrants in the United States.

In 1965, the United States goyernment formally recognized the essential unity of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The immigrant station on Ellis Island was added to the Statue of Liberty National Monument, creating a single public memorial to the process by which more than 100 million U.S. citizens living today can trace their roots.

Tragically, both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are now in danger of irreversible decay.

They are the victims of wind, rain, pollution, salt water and vandalism.

The Statue may have to be closed to visitors before its centennial in 1986.

The public is presently excluded from much of Ellis Island because the buildings are unsafe.

The story of these dramatic symbols reveals the meaning of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. An understanding of this story compels us to act now to restore Liberty and Ellis Island and to preserve them for future generations.

Today, more than two million visitors annually crowd onto Liberty Island ._The brief visit is a pilgrimage to a potent and symbolic scene.

Liberty has taken on a variety of meanings in the collective imagination of mankind. She is America's welcoming sign. She is a symbol of equality, progress and opportunity.

She is an expression of the struggle for the ideals of constitutional democracy.

Ultimately, she stands for United States itself---its promise, prosperity and freedom.

Children as young as 10 months can develop dental disease, he says, but many dental problems can be prevented with early dental checkups.

******•**************** WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT • THIS IS THE SPJST NAME . . . "Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST)." The commonly used letters SPJST are the initials of the originally chartered name of the organization, "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas."

FOUNDED . . . July 1 1897 in LaGrange, Texas, by early Czech pioneers of Texas in a time of real need for a fraternal benevolent society to provide mutual aid to its members and their families.

SUPREME LODGE . • . located in Temple, Texas, and consists of five administrative officers and seven directors selected by the convention. They are solely responsible for administration of all business affairs of the society in accordance with the constituiton and bylaws as re-affirmed or revised by the delegates in each quadrennial convention.

PURPOSE . . . to encourage individual and group social responsibility; to provide economic security and benevolent assistance to members, their families, and other needy persons; and to encourage and promote American patiotism and the study and retention of the Czech language, traditions, and cultural heritage. . . . consists of approximately 60,000 active, social and juvenile members of both sexes, who have qualified for membership under the moral, citizenship, health and other requirements of the order. Contrary to common belief, Membership is NOT restricted to persons of Czech descent.

ORGANIZATION . . . Non-denominational, composed of 128 local lodges which hold regular periodic meetings and are affiliated with the Supreme Lodge, and are subordinate to it. Local lodges have numbers and names which are either descriptive of their locality, patriotic, or historical.
