Joseph Martin Skrabanek was born June 25, 1889 in Wesley, Texas to Marie Jancalek Skrabanek and Joseph Skrabanek. He was one of five children. (continued On Page 3)

In the weekly Vestniks, you will notice that in column 1 on page 2 states: "Vestnik is published weekly except the second week of June and third week of August, therefore, there will be NO Vestnik issued dated August 21st. Members, keep this information in mind. *** Our Czech Section readers will certainly be happy to welcome Sister Agnes Houdek back after several weeks due to light illness. She has been a consistent weekly contributor to the "Vestnik Czech Section" for 20 plus years. The editor likewise welcomes Miss Houdek back to the Vestnik columns. *** Before the 1972 convention of our SPJST, the editor proposed that we have a chairman of the Board of Directors of our Supreme Lodge who would preside over our SL meetings instead of the SL president. It seemed rather proper that, since the other officers made their reports and answered questions to the Board, the president also should do so. The meetings lasted through Thursday most of the time. That was about 14 years ago, however, the suggestion got nowhere, and the same also was talked about prior to the 1976 and 1980 conventions. Finally, in the 1984 convention, the bylaw doing just that was adopted to become effective July 1, 1984.

Since that time the meetings are shorter and, as mentioned committees have been appointed to work out details between dates of the quarterly SL meetings and make their reports in the SL meetings, thus shortening the length of them. Last week we mentioned the three additional committees which have been created and this editor is, especially, glad to see the creation of the Fraternal Committee which "fits" very well into the work of our SPJST Society.

While at the SL meeting, Tuesday, July 9th, it was revealed that the Supreme Lodge has $1,000 invested in Czech - teaching material such as lessons, books, tapes, etc. Colleges and schools teaching Czech may find some help from that source by contacting SL President Howard Leshikar or other officers about this matter.

During the editor's attendance at the meetings, the Child Abuse Program aid teaching of the Czech language were discussed during President Leiliikar's report. The idea of an "SPJST Fraternal Day" in June 1986 (probably) was discussed briefly and left to do some thinkihg about this subject. • The SL body dikussed the interest rates and the possibility and advisability of lowering them on real estate mortgage loans and annuity, however, we will wait to see what the rates were finally set the next day because the meeting adjourned for Tuesday to end by Wednesday noon.

The district indeed had an outstanding youth day with nearly 200 entries in Craft, Talent and Royalty; this proves what hard work will achieve. All the youngsters are commended for keeping your district in the spotlight. ***

Arrival, effort, achievement and renewal form the line which ties us through the generations to a new beginning in the United States. For so many millions of us, that new beginning occurred under Liberty's gaze and in the corridors of Ellis Island. That beginning has important implications for the future..

Together, Liberty and Ellis Island represent two different orders of force which combined, have produced the world's most powerful and productive nation. That is why the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are two complementary parts of a single monument to our way of life. ***

Despite the administration's cutback proposals, the federal government remains a major source of financial aid for students planning to attend college next fall.

The White House wants to make guaranteed loans only to students from families with incomes of $32,500 or less per year and to put a yearly $4,000 cap on federal aid to individual students. But these proposals have yet to be approved by Congress.

Meanwhile, five federal programs are paying billions of dollars in aid to students who can qualify. College financial - aid administrators can supply details, but here are the basics: The largest aid effort is the Pell Grant Program, which provides up to $2,100 in awards for undergraduates in the 1985 - 86 school year. Just how much you can get depends upon your financial need -- the difference between college costs and how much you can afford to pay; also limited to undergraduates, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) money, so it's important to meet the institution's application deadline.

This program provides part - time jobs for needy undergraduates and graduate students. You get paid at least the minimum wage. Jobs are either on campus or for a nonprofit organization.

Interest on these loans is only 5 percent. Needy undergraduates can borrow up to a total of $6,000 during college years. Graduate students can get up to $12,000, including undergraduate loans. Repayment can be deferred until graduation.

Private lenders provide up to $2,500 per year for qualified undergraduates to a maximum of $12,500, with all loans insured by state and federal governments. Graduate students can borrow up to $5,000 per year with a ceiling of $25,000. In some states, these amounts may be lower. For new borrowers, the interest rate is 8 percent. In addition, loans are available for parents and students who are unable to show financial need. The interest rate is 12 percent, and repayment starts within 60 days. ***

Wednesday, July 24, 1985—VESTNIK/3*

Brother Skrabanek attended a business college in Houston. During World War I he was stationed at Ellington Field and proudly served as a member of the military band. After the war he continued his musical interests by playing in a local band. Later became a member of the Tamburash Band in Houston along with his wife.

He took employment with the Great Southern. Life Assurance Company and worked as a sales representative for many years. While there he met a fellow employee, Ara Caruth, who became his wife on January 15, 1929.

In 1921, while still with Great Southern, he began farming rice in the Almeda and Danbury area. He continued to farm around Danbury until he retired from rice farming, later, diversifying into the raising of cattle.. Subsequently, he became an SPJST sales representative and sold insurance for the SPJST. He also became a partner in a lumber yard in Angleton and in the Airline Auto Supply in Houston. He was active in

St5I1 Conservation and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Brother Skrabanek was, always Civic minded. Although he made his home in Houston, he served on the Danbury school board for many years, and was a director of the First National Bank in Angleton for almost forty years.

Brother Skrabanek has been a zealous and very productive worker for the SPJST. He served as director of District V for over 20 years. He also was secretary of Danbury Lodge No. 139 for several years and then elected president in which he served for some 30 years. He was instrumental in the building of the Needville Rest Home and served as a director for many, many years. He continued to sell SPJST insurance until well into his nineties.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge and the Members of SPJST No. 139 extend congratulations and best wishes to Brother Skrabanek for his long life and his many years of service and wish him well.

Family Day For Lodge 4, Halletsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, July 14, 1985 at the Grant Building with local lodge President Linda Mikush presiding.

Gary Chudej led the members in the pledge to the U.S. flag.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our departed Sister Stella Woytek.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved. He had no correspondence.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky reported. She also read a letter from the Lavaca Work Activity Center requesting our assistance in sponsoring an athlete to the Special Olympics. Our lodge voted to contribute $35 to this worthy cause.

Under old business our annual Family Day was discussed and planned. It will be held Sunday, August 11th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning with a beef stew dinner with trimmings to be served at noon. Ladies of the lodge are asked to donate peaches, pickles, cakes, kolache, etc. to be served with the meal. There will be a small charge for the meal as usual. A project sponsored by the lodge will provide entertainment in the afternoon. Door prizes will be given members and their families are invited to attend.

There was no new business so the meeting was adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served. The door prize was won by Elsie Mascheck.

Members are reminded to attend our annual Family Day Sunday, August 11 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning with a beef stew dinner as usual. Entertainment will be provided, refreshments served and door prizes will be given.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Changes Tournament Date Dear Members: After a most enjoyable hamburger supper, President Ann Balusek opened the regular monthly meeting by leading the members and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of departed Brother Ronnie Rubac. May he rest in peace.

President Ann Balusek then welcomed our guests, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal (Jerry is Lodge 47 president), Lilly Zajicek, Gene Marak and Elyven Pfannstill. We were very happy to have you all; please come, again.

Lodge 25, Ennis July Meeting Dear Members and Friends: The SPJST Lodge No. 25 July meeting was called to order by President James Whitfill at 8 p.m., July 10th. Due to the absence of Sergeant - at - Arms Garry Mizell, Vice President Albin Bouska led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed for Brother Louis Vavra who passed away this month.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Recording Secretary Kay Kovar. These minutes were accepted as read. The minutes of the Executive Board meeting, which was held Wednesday, July 9, were , also read and accepted.

A short discussion about the bills to be paid this month and also the payment of a note which will be due September 1, 1985, was voted to wait until the note is due to pay it. It was voted to pay the lodge insurance in installments rather than one payment as it is a rather large sum.

A correspondence was read from Mexia State School. Recently, Hydro therapy and a swimming pool have been added costing many thousands of dollars -- now an enclosure is needed around the pool. Donations will be appreciated; also, a report that two companies were found that will enforce liquor liability insurance after July 22, 1985.

Sister Emma Trojacek gave her financial report. Lodge finances are stable.

Brother Adolph Honza is on the sick list. Best Wishes for a speedy recovery!

In old business, Brother Louis Kudrna brought up the fact that during the three years preceding the convention, a lodge doesn't turn in the base sum of $54,000 each year, the lodge is out of the convention. So let's sell insurance!

A motion was made and passed to not pay dues to the Chamber of Commerce since they have taken their banquets elsewhere. It was suggested to ask why, since we have the facilities.

Problems are arising in letting people who work out of town park their cars in the lodge parking lot. A total of 35 cars are now parking and are beginning to run over into the driveway. A suggestion was made to put a notice reminding them not to

Our guests for the August meeting will be District III Director Sid Pokladnik and SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. They will explain more about direct billing. They were invited by Sales Representative Johnny I. Krajca. A social honoring our guests will be held at 7 p.m. preceding the meeting.

A reminder to everyone interested in the domino tournament to- contact Johnny Krajca 875 - 6149. The barbecue cookoff and domino tournament will be held Sunday afternoon, August 25th.

Lodge 81, Needville Meets Dear Members: Our July meeting was called to order

by President Charlie Matcek.

Mary Matcek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present.

We stood for a moment of silence for Lydia Spurny; our sympathy goes out to her family.

All reports were accepted as given.

We were happy to have two visitors with us, namely, James Bacak from El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40 and Louis Hanus from Lodge 88, Houston.

After dinner the lodge had bought some nice bingo prizes which were awarded to the winners. A nice time was held by everyone and it was good to see many of our members, and we hope that we get to see them at our regular meetings whenever possible.

(Our regular lodge meetings are held at 1505 S. Gevers Street every third Sunday of the month, beginning at 2 p.m. A business meeting usually takes about one hour, then refreshments are served, and we have a games party afterwards. It always is an enjoyable Sunday afternoon.)

Greetings

Members of Lodge 133 enjoyed themselves very much at a party that was held for all members July 11th. A complete dinner with barbecue brisket and sausage with all the trimmings was served, compliments of the lodge.

Prior to the dinner and after dinner, music was furnished by Charles Kurtz, on the accordion, Dominic Netek on the drums, and vocalist Sister Viola Mazac.

After almost 44 years, Brother Emil Matula [left] and Brother Johnnie Pekar got to see each other, again. Both served in the U.S. Army, and were stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed 7 December 1941. Johnnie Pekar was with the 19th Infantry which later was a part of the 24th Infantry Division. Emil Matula served with the 25th Infantry Division. Both Divisions had extensive combat service in the Pacific. It was quite a reunion for both of the members and both enjoyed the party sponsored by Lodge 133. Brother Matula serves on the SPJST Publication Committee from District VII. [Article and photo by D. Lodge 154, Ft. Worth To Celebrate Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Jerry Milan, and he led us in the pledge to our flag All officers were present, except our financial secretary, Sister Mary Renfro' who was at the hospital with Brother Bill Renfro. He is critically ill.

Sister Mary Pavey read the minutes of the previous meeting. All the reports were approved as read.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported the youth club had a big time after their last meeting; swimming and eating. Several of them will be going to camp.

Our 10th anniversary was discussed.

A dance Saturday, July 27th from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with Bill Kucera's Czech Mates, will be held. Sunday, July 28th dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a program following. We hope you come and help us celebrate.

Sisters are asked to bring a pastry for our dinner.

Brother Don Steinman reported on the Dominoe Tournament and the date and time will be at the end of this article.

Sister Maryln and Glen Douglass just returned from a 3 - week vacation in Hawaii and repotted a great time.

Brother Don and Sister Rose Steinman dropped me off in St. Louis on their way to Chicago to the Convention and Slet. I started off with a fall at Steinmans before we left and a week later I fell at Grants' Farm and had a good tumble. My ribs are just beginning to get better. I stayed in the home of my niece, Sister Mary K. Harrison, her husband and 2 children and my sister, Micky who resides with them. They nursed me for the second week of my stay. They all enjoyed the different Texans who .stopped by on their way to or from the Slet. Micky, especially, enjoyed seeing Frank and Nita Houzvichka. She hadn't seen Frank in over 50 years. My brother Dugan, his wife, Alma and nephew, Joseph Ban visited me daily. In spite of it all, it was' great being with my family.

The two bus loads and private cars all arrived home safely from Chicago and there is still a lot of excitement around the club. They all had a wonderful time and came home with many awards. Our choreographer Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman did a fantastic job and all the first places proved it. Congratulations and to all the gymnasts for a job well done!

Sisters Frances and Melissa Mamula of South Bend, Indiana came back on the bus with the group and enjoyed a week's visit with the Milan family.

Benny and I enjoyed a short visit with our nephew, Brother Norland and Sue Havran of Longmont, Colorado, while on their tour of Texas.

Sister Kelly Eaton was honored at a lovely baby shower in the home of Mrs. Pete Harrell, July 7th.

We extend our congratulations to anniversary. celebrants Sister Mary K. and Darrell Harrison on their 12th; Brother Bill and Sister Mary Renfro, their 47th, and to Brother Joe Paul and Sister Sandy HubenakItheir . silver and Mac and Sister Lillie McMillen their golden. Both are of Lodge 92. I was sorry to have missed the parties.

Plans For Lodge 179 Warrenton Picnic Final

Dear Members and Guests: Lodge No. 179 held its regular monthly meeting at 8 p.m. July 11th with President Harold Bergmann presiding.

There were several officers absent due to being on tours.

Edith Pfeiffer read the minutes of the previous meeting.

For old business, 'final plans were made for the August 4th Annual Feast.

The working list was read and members on committees will be notified. Members were reminded to bring a cake for cake walk or to serve and also an item for the country store.

For the August 8th at 8 p.m. meeting, the lodge will 'furnish cold cuts and members are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

After adjournment all enjoyed a delicious lunch and refreshments.

191, Lufkin To Celebrate Anniversary

Dear Members: During our last business meeting held July 9, 1985, plans were made to celebrate our 'second anniversary. We wish to invite all members and their friends to come and join in the good food and dance to the Ray Garcia Progressive Western Band.

All members of Lodge 191 bring your membership cards and get in free.

All guests will be charged a small fee of $5 per person, all children 16 and under will be admitted free.

A covered dish supper is also planned.

This invitation is extended to our sister lodges as well, so come out and join in the fun July 27th at 7:30 p.m.

Birthday Club Report Our July 10th meeting was opened with our President Pearl Hanka reading the "Magic of Love." That's what our world needs now: Love! The picture of the 1952 Birthday Club Sisters brought a smile to many of our present members. Thanks to our President Pearl Hanka.

The minutes were read by Secretary Rosalee Kostom and approved as read.

A great financial report was given by Treasurer Lillie Spies.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut reported sending get - well cards, sympathy cards and birthday cards.

President Pearl Hanka reported that Mrs. Baethe was in the hospital with pneumonia and doing fine. Agnes Pederson was present after successful eye surgery. Emily Bily, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

The following donations were reported: Bessie . Dewer -- bread, Sam Scott -- ice cream and potato chips, Theresa Spies -- Cremora and tea, Anna Hoffman -- coffee, and Jerry Ermis -- records.

Due to an unintentional omission, Gladys -Pulley's name was omitted from our fund - raising donors' list in last month's report. I sincerely regret the omission.

Our August cooks will be Mary Ehert, Bessie Dewer and Bessie Lero.

Bingo callers will be Martha Baxter and Inez Jeanes.

Lodge 178 Reverse Drawing Dinner/Dance Planned

To The Editor

vrzTNIK—Wednesday, July 24, 1985 Bednar. The Polka Festival quilt was won by Sally Valek. The quilt was made specially by Mary Polasek on her own and she donated it to the Circle.

All mothers were remembered in May for Mother's Day. Poems were read by two members and Alice Roberts presented Mrs. Zemanek a small gift for being the eldest mother at the meeting. The Circle donated to the Texas Sokol Organization from the proceeds on the festival's quilt drawing.

Some of you members who are not able to attend due to illness, your greetings were acknowledged. Also all your thank you cards were received and appreciated by the Circle. But the most important thing is to get well quickly or whatever else is keeping some of you from attending the meetings.

Quilting was done for Rose Bednar in May, Ella Zmolek in June, and Annie Vrana in July and in August, a quilt is scheduled for Georgia Zabojnik. Hattie Lekar's quilt is scheduled in September, and Mary Polasek's in October.

All members who had birthdays in May, June and July as you know Libbie W. never forgets you or the Circle and hope everyone has many, many more. The Circle's guests aren't ever forgotten. We had Mildred Trojacek and her sister, Vlasta Getchell from Utica, Michigan, again.

Member Mary Kunz and her sister visiting from Czechoslovakia, whom she didn't see in 36 years. The Circle is hopeful Mary and Josefa Vilzarobova had a tremendous reunion together.

A prayer in silence was made for Frank Sebestik, husband of member Mary Sebestik, who passed away this month. Shortly thereafter, Mary supposedly broke her hip and is now recuperating from the injury that happened at a shopping mall.

Hope to see everyone at the meeting in August and please let's have a better attendance.

From The State Youth Director State YAD Sunday, August 18, 1985 Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center 3303 North 3rd Street, Temple TO ALL CONCERNED: We are looking forward to and planning for one of the biggest and most successful State Youth Achievement Days. Royalty will be included with the talent, craft and Beseda.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or you are in line before registration time is over. We are asking that everyone cooperate because the people in charge of registration must then move on ix other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent must be sure to bring their own props - including their tapes, cassettes and the equipment on which to play these. This is very important because we will not be able to furnish the necessary equipment.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but NOT names, lodges or district.

Be sure to get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club ana your district are represented at this State YAD. Do not let them down. If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

See you at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center August 18th. This is a nice spacious facility and we believe all of you will like it.

There are motels in the Temple area offering nice accommodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD. We are starting a little earlier this year and hope to be able to finish by 7 p.m. or as soon thereafter as possible so that people needing to travel a distance will not be inconvenienced.

You also will notice that the lunch hour overlaps some of the activities.

This is regrettable, but there are many phases to cover and, as stated, we hope to be able to finish at a reasonable time. A change in the schedule this year is the presentation of awards throughout the day instead of the presentation all at one time. I hope this will make a more pleasant day.

The District II YAD was well attended by both youth and adults.

STATE YAD SCHEDULE The youth were full of enthusiasm and they were well - represented from the BESEDA /TALENT/CRAFTS/ROY whole district. There were 60 entrants W. Mayborn Convention Center who participated in the Talent and 3303 North 3rd Street, Temple Royalty contest and there were 194 craft entries in the Arts and Crafts Beseda contest. We had 5 king and 7 queen 10 to 10:15 a.m.

Thank you to my substitute Melvin Steger and all leaders and assistants for all of their devotion to the youth of our district and their willingness to help. I will start the results of the YAD with the Royalty king contest. Our District II king winner is Edward Giarrusso and his duke is his brother David Giarrusso, both are from Lodge 187, Round Rock. The first runner up king is Scott Listiak and first runner - up duke is Matt West, both are from Lodge 74, Lovelady.

Royalty Queen District II winner is Lawanna Price from Lodge 74, Lovelady. Lawanna did not have a duchess: Queen first runner - up is Jackie Bennett and Duchess first runner - up is Mari Ashby, both from Lodge 177, Academy.

The competition was stiff and only minor differences were shown in all competitions. You all did an excellent job and class yourself as a winner because you participated.

Scrapbook Contest 1st - Lodge 74, Lovelady Youth Club The above scrapbook will be permitted to compete at State YAD. All of the first place Talent and Craft winners will compete in statewide competition August 18 at the Frank Mayborn Convention Center.

Royalty will compete for State King and Queen the same day.

I would like to congratulate every contestant for a fine performance and I wish all the first place winners much luck whenever they perform at State.

The audience is also to be complimented for being quiet.

This year we were honored to have our 1984 Royalty District Contestants Shawn Young and Dawn Peterson to MC our YAD. They did a wonderful job and are to be complimented for their performance and willingness to help. Thanks again to both of you and thanks to everyone.

To all leaders, chaperones and campers planning to attend District II camp, camp will start Friday, August 2, 1985 at Camp Val Verde for the teenage group of children ages 12 through 16. This group of children should arrive at about 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 2nd. Their first meal at camp will be the noon meal at 12:30 p.m. This group will go home the morning of August 5 at about 11:00 a.m.

The junior group campers (ages 6 to 12) are to arrive at about 10:30 a.m.

August 5 and they will be ready to go home at 11:00 a.m. August 8th.

The activities for the teen group will start at 2 p.m. Friday, August 2nd.

The morning break will include cookies and punch or Gatorade and is furnished by District II camp. The afternoon break is soda pop and the children must buy their own; the price is 50 cents in cans this year so they should have some money for drinks.

If you have any questions, please ask your youth leader or feel free to call me.

Items To Bring To Cam 1) Sheets 2) Pillow (if you use one) 3) Light cover 4) Swim suit and underclothes (junior group underclothes initialed if possible) 5) Towels and wash cloth 6) Toilet articles (soap and grooming needs) 7) Casual clothes 8) Flashlight (optional) 9) Long pants, socks and shoes (a must if you plan to ride horses) 10) Hat or cap (for hiking and archery) 11) Change of clothes for each day and large grocery bag or garbage bag for dirty clothes 12) Comfortable shoes (2 pair are desirable) because you will walk and play quite a bit 13) Camera (if desired) 14) Suntan lotion or bug repellent (optional) 15) Tennis racquet (if you wish to play tennis), balls furnished by the district 16) Stereo records (optional) or some favorite dance records 17) Some money for extra soda pop (there will be morning refreshments served by the camp Our schedule includes swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, crafts, some hiking, outdoor and indoor games or many varieties.

Parties are planned for each night.

We will have flag ceremonies twice daily and there should be a patriotic song or a poem in addition to the pledge. Each club will have one of these ceremonies for each group so plan what you will do. Table grace will also be given by the youth at each meal.

The shortest way to get to Camp Val Verde is to take Hwy. 36 West out of Temple, go about 6 miles, take Hwy. 317 to the right toward Moody and go straight through Moody and to McGregor, go to the second red light in McGregor and turn right; this will be Hwy. 84 heading east toward Waco, go about 8 miles to the Val Verde Exit to the left, follow that road and when you come to a "T" turn right and then take the second road to the left and that takes you into camp. Stop at the dining hall for further instructions.

It seems that I am running out of time this year trying to get his in the Vestnik so I hope you will come to

camp and see what else was planned this last week.

The schedule planned for this year will be similar to last year for the junior category since we will have to divide them into five groups and plan to give them a little time to rest during noon. If it continues to be so hot we may have to slow down our activities.

We certainly hope all of you who sent in applications will be able to attend because we are having a place reserved for you in your group and your cabin and we have plans to have a great camp.

The juniors should bring some pennies for the penny carnival and both groups should bring some old junk clothes for a Punk Party. Game parties and a hayride are on the schedule for both groups.

The teenagers will plan their own game parties. They also may have a choice to camp out one night at a new primitive camp site. There are lots of good things in the planning stage.

Don't miss out --- be there.

Let's all remember our special first annual fun carnival and District II fall meeting August 11th at Lodge 29, Taylor beginning at 2 p.m. This fun carnival also will be very different and lots of fun. Plan to be there.

District V Youth Achievement Day July 28, 1985, Lodge 88, Houston will be hosting the District V Youth Achievement Day (YAD). All are invited to come.

In order to raise additional funds for camp expenses, the parents of District V youth will be serving a spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased from any youth club member or the leaders. Price of the dinner will be: adult plate, $4 and child plate (12 years and under), $2.50. Our queen' entrant, Jackie Bennett, won first runner - up, and our king entrant Kevin Brown, won third place.

We were very happy!

We had several other winners in Arts and Crafts, namely, Donald Tomastik (third place with his sewing entry and a third place with his stamp collection), Eric Tomastik (won a first with a wasp collection and a third place with his cluck clock), Shawn Tomastik (won a second place with his bug collection), Kevin rown (won first place with his truck model).

Dear Readers, Lodge No. 39 held its monthly meeting Sunday, July 14, 1985 at 2 p.m. at the lodge home. There were 13 members present.

Dear Readers, Hi! I am a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. In June I was elected historian for our youth club.

July 7, 1985, we held District VII Youth Achievement Day in Corpus Christi. It was a fun and interesting day. Three members in our lodge will be going to the state competition in August.

We had our July meeting Wednesday, July 10th. We discussed having a summer outing and doing activities to earn more points.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club Meets Dear Readers, Our Lodge 24 Youth Club meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. July 10th by President Misti Gotcher.

Michael Harvell and La Tonya Mayfield led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had several visitors Shanna Mayfield, Jeffery Posvar, David Macek, Rose Harvell and Mr. Frank Klinkovsky.

We also had two new members, Kindra and Michelle Mikeska.

We talked mostly about camp and YAD. Youth Leader Carol Chervenka will be sending our members information about a swimming party later this month.

After the meeting, we had free hamburgers and softdrinks. Some of us also played football.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting July 7, 1985 at the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar. The pledge was led by Valerie Roye and the prayer was recited by Linda Treumer.

Poems were read by Lenice Kaspar, Michelle Srubar, Stephanie and Valerie Roye, Jean and Marcy Dorotik.

Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Club Meeting Dear Members: Our youth club held its regular meeting Sunday, July 14, 1985 at 2 p.m.

We were asked to think of some charity projects to do for the coming months and bring them to our next meeting. We then started doing our craft for the day.

After the adult meeting several of our club members presented program numbers. Then we had a covered dish supper.

Set For State YAD Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge 32, Victoria, held their meeting July 3, 1985 at the Citizen's National Bank.

We discussed our recent Czech Fest and it was reported by Youth Leader Frances Motal that we did real well with our booths. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard!

We have decided to adopt a red eared turtle for a year at the Texas Zoo Dear Vestnik Readers, The El Campo - Hillje youth group here in Victoria, again.

Those members who attended camp held its July meeting Thursday, July 11, 1985 at 7 p.m. at the American said they really had a good time.

Lodge 74, Lovelady YC Holds Annual Project Dear Members, The July 9th meeting of Lodge 74 was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Scott McKenny. There were eight members, and two adults.

We have $858.99 in our treasury.

July 4th we, the youth club, had our Individual Talent and Group Talent numbers. The youth club sponsored a cake auction.. We would like to thank Trudy Kennedy for auctioning off our cakes. We also would like to thank these people for bringing our cakes, namely, Robert Mack, Joyce Rains, Terri Bobalik, A. R. Cob, Mark Hefner, Gloria Blackstone, Steve West, Donny McKenny, Mr. Alford, and Chester Shmoldas donated 3 cakes back to the youth for re - auction which came to $56. We thank you! Altogether we made $448.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Lodge 30 Youth Club hosted the District VI YAD, at the Taiton Community Center July 14, 1985.

Taiton came out with many first place winners. The first place Talent winners from Taiton were Lenice Kaspar (6 - 9), Stephanie Roye (10 12), and Jean Dorotik (15 - 17).

In Group Talent the first place winners in the (6 to 12) age group were Valerie Roye and Jeanine Dorotik.

Dear Members, I enjoyed District II YAD. It was my first time to participate and compete. I won third place in Foods (6 to 9) year old. Several people came by and asked for my recipe for my dip on my vegetable tray, so here it is: 8 oz. cream cheese (soften) 1 Tablespoon mayonnaise Miracle Whip) 1 stick celery Lodge 1 large carrot 4 green onions (shredded fine) 8 radishes You can put fresh cut vegetables around to dip with. I used squash, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, carrots, cucumbers and mushrooms.

Saturday, July 20, 1985.

The double - ring ceremony took place at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Dallas and was performed by Father Robert Peebles. Miss Jackie LaQuey read the readings. The bride's aunt, Mrs. Majka Clark from Canyon City, Colorado sang. "Oh Perfect Love," "Where Charity and Love Prevail," "All I Am, I Give To You," and "Wherever You Go." The organist was Mrs. Evangeline Cashel.

The maid of honor was Miss Michelle Saucier of Dallas. The brid6maid was Mrs. Andrea Miller of Wichita Falls. They were short sleeved tea - length dresses. The pink dresses were made of satin covered with lace netting and had a wide sash and bow. The flower girls were Melissa Miller and Jennifer Weeks.

The best man was Mike Phelps of Bedford. The groomsman was Steve Breden of Bethalto, Illinois The ringbearer was Matt Miller. Serving as ushers were Alvin Potak and Tommy Miller.

The bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. August Beran of Dallas. The late grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vrla of Ennis and Mr. and Mrs. William Beran of Kaufman.

The groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Harold H. Roden of Wichita Falls.

The bride's dress was a Mori Lee design. It was a formal white gown of tafetta embellished with beaded patterns of alencon lace. The traditional bridal bodice featured a sweetheart neckline and genevieve sleeves. Vertical lace appliques enhanced the skirt beautifully. A

gentle flounce of shiffli embroidery graced the hemline, sweeping into a magnificent scalloped cathedral train.

Her veil was from the Juliette collection. The headpiece was of alencon lace and pearls. The veil had lace appliques and pearls and also a blusher veil. She wore a tear - drop pearl necklace.

The bouquet consisted of five long stem pink roses accented with baby's breath, air fern, white ribbon and a white veil. • ' The bride's mother wore a long sleeved, dusty rose dress, decorated with dusty pink embroidered flowers inset with pearls. The groom's mother wore a long - sleeved, blue silk dress.

Miss Dolores. Arce registered the guests at the VFW Post 8785. The reception consisted of dinner, cake, punch and a dance.

The wedding party's tables were covered with pink and decorated with white netting and pink rose bouquets.

The bride's cake consisted of three separated layers. The cake and columns were decorated with pink rose buds atop and descending. The cake top resembled the couple.

A rehearsal dinner was given by the groom's parents at Gallagher's Steakhouse.

The newlyweds are both recent graduates of Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. Catherine received a scholarship from SPJST Lodge 130 for the 1984/85 school year.

They will honeymoon in Europe for Germany, visiting 10 weeks, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Holland, France, Italy, Spain, also Great Britian, Ireland.

School Teacher Retires C.R. Lindsay of Golden Beach, Llano, retired June 30th from thirty six years in the public schools of Texas. He taught science in Round Rock High School in 1949 - 50; was in Bartlett from 1950 to 1971 as a classroom teacher, high school principal, and superintendent; in Llano as high school science teacher from ;971 to 1976, and elementary principal from 1976 through June 30, 1985.

Brother Renner was born in industry October 3, 1907, to Mr. and Mrs. Adam Renner. His parents died when he was 8 years old and he was reared by Mr. and Mrs. Uhrik in Nelsonville. He was engaged in farming and ranching in the Nelsonville community.

He was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and the Nelsonville SPJST Lodge No. 68.

November 6, 1935 he was married tc Miss Bessie Maresh, in ceremonies performed in Bellville, Texas.

Funeral services were held from the Nelsonville Brethren Church at 10 a.m. May 18 with Rev. James Hejl officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery near Nelsonville.

Pallbearers were D.E. Briles, Connie Mikeska, Berry Mikeska, Frank Cosmann, Ben Maresh and Cuba Burleson.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bessie Renner of Nelsonville; sons.

Wayland L. Renner of Bellville anc Kenneth W. Renner of Brenham; sister, Mrs. Ruth Foss of Austin; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Renner of Bellville.

He had been employed at Scott and White Memorial Hospital and at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen. He married Kathy Cavanaugh in 1980.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT • 9 * THIS IS THE SPJST NAME . . . "Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST)." The commonly used letters SPJST are the initials of the originally chartered name of the organization, "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas."

FOUNDED . . . July 1 1897 in LaGrange, Texas, by early Czech pioneers of Texas in a time of real need for a fraternal benevolent society to provide mutual aid to its members and their families.

SUPREME LODGE . • located in Temple, Texas, and consists of five administrative officers and seven directors selected by the convention. They are solely responsible for administration of all business affairs of the society in accordance with the constituiton and bylaws as re-affirmed or revised by the delegates in each quadrennial convention.

PURPOSE . .. to encourage individual and group social responsibility; to provide economic security and benevolent assistance to members, their families, and other needy persons; and to encourage and promote American patiotism and the study and retention of the Czech language, traditions, and cultural heritage. . . . consists of approximately 60,000 active, social and juvenile members of both sexes, who have qualified for membership under the moral, citizenship, health and other requirements of the order. Contrary to common belief, membership is NOT restricted to persons of Czech descent.

ORGANIZATION . . • Non-denominational, composed of 128 local lodges which hold regular periodic meetings and are affiliated with the Supreme Lodge, and are subordinate to it. Local lodges have numbers and names which are either descriptive of their locality, patriotic, or historical.
