tiEREAS, the Supreme Lodge a,_d the SPJST membership was saddened to learn of the death of Emil Holub, past director of the Supreme Lodge SPJST; and, WHEREAS, Brother Emil Holub left surviving him to mourn his departure, his wife and family, a host of friends Igeighbors, all of whom, w th all the members of the SPJST, mourn partu ,. and, WHEREAS, the members of the Supreme Lodge SPJS'T desire to record their sorrow at the death on June 7, 1985 of Brother Emil Holub, who has worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society and served as director for the period from January 29, 1971 to December 31, 1972.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST meeting as a body in session on July 10, 1985 hereby gives its formal expression of sympathy and does hereby note in its records the passing from this life of a loyal member who was respected by his associates and loved by his family and friends.

Tuesday, July 9th, the editor attended the third quarterly meeting of our SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The attempt to attend the January and April meetings was made impossible because the meetings have been shortened very much in the last 12 months since the last convention in June 1984 when the chairman of the Board of Directors became the presiding officer at the Supreme Lodge meetings.

This has been made possible because certain phases of our SL duties have been assigned to committees. For instance, in this meeting, there were three committees appointed, namely; 1.] A Products Committee, 2.] A Fraternal Committee, and 3.] A Financial Planning Committee.

These committees meet and plan certain activities and report at the quarterly Supreme Lodge meetings which shortens the time of the meetings.

We will have more to say about our visit at the meeting, which was imformative, at a later date. *** In last week's issue'we mentioned we would write more about the District III Youth Achievement Day held June 30th at Lodge 66 in Elm Mott. The pictures have arrived and all are good with the exception of the "Junior and Teenager of the Year," which was bad because of two flashes too close together .

District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr has her YAD results in this issue as well as District IV Youth`Counselor Mary Haisler, however, the pictures from District IV YAD, unfortunately, were too dark to be processed. -We hope Sister Haisler can obtain the photos of all first place winners.

Getting back to District III YAD, the day's activities were scheduled for a full day with many individuals assigned to their posts, along with Director Sid Pokladnik working together with them for the good of the Society. YAD entrants came to perform a good show whether in talent, craft or royalty, they all did their best. Those who achieved first place (some more than one) will be awaiting the final date of the State YAD competition which will take place Sunday, August 18, 1985 in conjunction with State Royalty in the Frank Mayborn Convention Center at Temple. We encourage everyone's attendance from all seven districts.

District III was priviledged to have representation from the State Youth Department, namely, SL President Howard Leshikar with State Youth Director Sue Meadows. Among the other officials included District III Director Sid Pokladnik, DYC Bessie Petr with her Assistant Rose Mary Banik, all of whom played an important role. It was also gratifying to see one our former SPJST State Queens, Charlotte Banik, who was mistress of ceremony.

The YAD, no doubt, was another successful annual event and the host lodge members deserve everyone's appreciation for their fine hospitality and undertaking this occasion to share with the youth of our SPJST.

Good fortune is extended to all the winners in District III and IV! *** Insect stings-- a common accompaniment to summertime -- are painful irritations to most people. But the stings can be fatal to those few who are allergic to them if action isn't taken quickly.

The list of culprits includes yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, bees and, in the South, fire ants. To avoid such insects, it helps to know their habitats.

Yellow jackets, wasps, hornets and bees have nests in the ground and in trees. Some wasps nest under the eaves of houses. Fire ants live in mounds in the ground.

Bright - colored clothing attracts insects. Close - fitting white or khaki clothing offers the best protection.

Odors of food and cosmetics also draw the attention of insects. Keep garbage cans, covered, and avoid perfume, scented soap and suntan lotion.

For sting victims who are not allergic, the symptoms, swelling, pain and redness around the wound, should subside quickly. If the insect's stinger and venom sack have been left in the wound, remove them carefully. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water. Apply calamine lotion to lessen itching and ice to reduce pain and swelling.

Those with allergies can have violent reactions within moments of the sting.

Symptoms include: Hives, swelling of lips or tongue, trouble swallowing and breathing, vomiting, a drastic drop in blood pressure and even heart failure.

If such a reaction occurs, call immediately for emergency medical assistance.

If you suspect that you are allergic, you can get a skin test to find out for sure. Those who do have allergies can undergo a desensitization treatment consisting of injections of small, quantities of insect venom to build up immunity.

Those with allergies are urged to carry an emergency kit containing: Adrenalin and a syringe to administer an injection, a tourniquet to stop the spread of venom, and antihistamine tablets to reduce the severity of symptoms. *** During 1984, more than 80 percent of the deaths caused by lightning occurred in open fields, under trees and on golf courses. For that reason, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration urges moving indoors at the onset of lightning. Do not stand under tall, isolated trees, because they can be natural lightning rods. Avoid being the highest point around, or you could become a lightning rod yourself.

If caught in a flat, open field and your hair starts to stand on end, drop to your knees. Do not lie flat on the ground. ***

Loss of your job and sudden illness are two situations that could make it impossible for you to pay your bills'on time. If one or more of those kinds of things happens, you may want to contact an office of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, a nonprofit organization with more than 200 offices in 44 states. A counselor will try to arrange a repayment plan that is acceptable to you and your creditors.

Winners at the local lodge level will then participate in the State Playoffs with the schedule as follows: Straight Dominoes -- September 21st 42 -- October 5th We are looking forward to a great turnout and a good time.

An Invitation To Lodge 6 Annual Picnic Dear Members and Friends: The officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood want to invite everyone to their 88th annual picnic Sunday, July 21, 1985.

Ready For Picnic

Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 was called to order by President Dobecka asking Lynette Hykel and Tammi Dobecka to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lynette then led the SPJST Pledge. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Sister Mary Svacina.

The roll call was called with all officers being present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. All other reports given were in order.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. She reported that our youth did very well at District III YAD. The youth donated to several different organizations during the month of June. They also will be having games at the annual picnic and they will be needing workers for the

various games. Please contact Willi( Mae Schuetz about when you want tc work. Chris Ivy brought the birthday cake.

Door prizes drawn were $10 -- Harry Zaharniak (not present), $10 -- Delores Hutyra (not present), $2 -- progressive door prize -- Lillian Perez (not present), and the $2 door prize was won by Stella Perez.

The next trustees' meeting will be Friday, July 26 and the next regular meeting will be Friday, August 2 at 8 p.m.

Everyone remember our annual picnic Sunday, July 21, 1985. We will have a complete fried chicken dinner with games and auction to follow.

Tabor Lodge 17 July Meeting

New

Dear Members: Lodge 17 held its regular monthly meeting July 7th as scheduled.

I did not attend the June meeting, therefore, no report.

At the June meeting a resolution of sympathy was read for Brother Henry Haisler who had recently passed away.

Also at that meeting, dates were set for the "Members Only" 42 and domino tournaments -- 42 will be helc July 28th at 2 p.m. and straight dominoes will take place August 18th at 2 p.m. if you are interested please contact Bud Petty at (409) 272 - 3078.

At the July meeting a resolution of sympathy was read for Sister Lydia H. Stefka. We would like to extend our sympathy to the loved ones of both Sister Stefka and Brother Haisler.

The membership voted to allow the Gun Club to hold its turkey shoot on our grounds, provided they furnish proof of liability insurance.

Also we will let the Caldwell Softball Team use the hall to hold a "42" tournament to raise money for the team's expenses. This event will be held August 3 at 2 p.m. If interested call Donnie Paul at 272 - 3196. This tournament will be open to the public, so come out to have a good time

playing "42" and support a local team.

Remember come out to our "Members Only" 42 tournament July 28th at 2 p.m. The kitchen will be open with Martha Trcalek as chief cook.

Also, winners will go on to a state playoff.

I'm hoping to see all of you at the local tournament.

47, Seaton Prepares For Domino Tournament Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Vice President Alfred Klusacek called the lodge meeting to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7th.

Flagbearers Tracy Klusacek and Heidi Schroeder brought in the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed to honor the memory of our departed members, Wm. Otis McIver and Thomas Donald Robertson of Union City, Georgia. May they rest in eternal peace.

Visitors recognized were Harvey Polivka of Wisconsin, Lonnie, Olga and Freddie Schroeder, also recognized were out - of - town members Rose Polivka from Wisconsin, and Sharon Davis of Canyon Lake, Texas. We enjoyed your visit, so please come, again!

Roll call of officers and sales representatives was read by Secretary Ann Koon and revealed that Parliamentarian Dan Balusek and English Reporter Lucy Mihatsch were absent. Anton Motl was appointed to take Brother Balusek's place.

Correspondence was read -- a request to update our history from the Bell County Historical Commission, a thank you for the wreath of flowers for Brother McIver's funeral from his mother, Sister Vivian McIver and thank you cards from Gary Skrabanek and Joe Divis for get - well cards sent to them at the hospital.

Transfers from Lodge 47 to Lodge 24 are Judy Kay Jeske, Jana Jeske and Kenneth Jeske.

New members accepted were Johnny F. Herring, Charles E. Obermiller, Christopher Watkins, Tracy Lee Williams, John M. Paruzinski and Mathew A. Goldman. A warm welcome to each of you and hope you become active in lodge activities.

Hospitalized in the month of June were Henry Haisler, Mark Franklin, Louis Sirney, Alice Banning and Glen Bartek, Jr. We are wishing all a speedy recovery.

Reports were given by the officers.

President Pechal reported on the workday held June 22nd. The following were present and helped where they were needed: Emil and Frances Hejl, Henry and Della Mares, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, J.D. Chlapek, Woodrow Marek, Eugene Hejl and J.D. Lesikar.

The filters were ordered and installed July 3rd by J.D. Lesikar and Jerry Pechal.

We are still in need of a kitchen chairperson for August, so if you wish to run the kitchen next month, call President Pechal as soon as possible.

The month of October, November and December are also available.

Willie Kohutek stated . that the domino tournament will be organized Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m., so if you are interested be there.

Secretary Ann Koon reported that the pictures taken by Dave Eagle can be ordered from the proofs that we have.

Treasurer Henry Mares gave his monthly report and so did Financial Secretary Adeline Kohutek.

Cleaning chairpersons Brother Emil and Sister Frances Hejl resigned their positions as of Monday, July 8, 1985 due to the illness of Sister Hejl.

Audit chairperson Frank Klinkovsky gave the committee's quarterly report. He also spoke on the upcoming District II YAD to be held Sunday, July 14th at Elgin, and camping at Camp Val Verde in August, also the fall meeting and fun carnival at Lodge 29 Sunday, August 11th. Watch for further details in Brother Klinkovsky's letters in the Vestnik.

Youth Leader Rosie Craft was called on by Vice President Klusacek for her report. Michael Morris presided at the youth club meeting; 15 members and 3 visitors were present. Michael will represent Lodge 47 as a king contestant at the YAD at Elgin. Good luck!

President Jerry Pechal took over the meeting for the acceptance of resignation of Brother Emil and Sister Frances Hejl. We regret that illness caused them to quit their job. We gave them a standing ovation for a job well done. We hope your health improves so you may still help out, again. The appointment of Brother Daniel and Sister Lillian Hejl was unanimously accepted to finish the year. Good luck to both couples!

Birthday celebrants for July are Charlie Marek, Jerome Orsag, Willie Kohutek, Frank Shenkir, Della Mares, Dan Hejl, Charles Sirney, Kathy Pavlica, Jimmy and Lonnie Schroeder.

Happy Anniversary to Brother Jerry and Sister Annie Chupik who will be married 55 years this month.

Recording Secretary Ann Koon stated that 65 members and visitors had registered at our lodge meeting.

Lodge 84, Dallas To Hold Princess Ball Dear Members: I suppose everyone is getting ready for a vacation filled with fun and enjoyment and that's nice!

Our meeting last Friday was short because everyone was anxious to meet the new members who, by the way, were initiated into the lodge by our District 'IL Director Sid Pokladnik.

We thank him for his speech and sincere welcome to those who are new members of this great Society. It also was nice to see Sister Justine at the meeting and dinner which was enjoyed by all.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and correspondence read by Secretary Salac included an invitation to the Czechfest in Victoria for Lodge 32.

Voted on was the approval of finishing the bar work and approval of the mirror installation.

The Teen Princess Ball is July 20th and Youth Leader Bessie Petr looks for a great crowd. She invited all to attend.

August 17th, The Mikulas play for dancing here and "Hawaii" is the theme. How long has it been since you wore that grass skirt? You better start looking where you stored it because Jody's "Blue Hawaii" will put you on the dance floor and you want to be dressed properly; maybe it's "Sweet Lanai" -- I get those two songs mixed up, anyway whether you come dressed for the occasion or not, you come!

In June the Sunshine Committee sent get well cards to Brother James Janousek, Bill Renfro (Lodge 154), Sister Carol Rejcek and Anne Scott.

Congratulations card went to Brother Paul and Sister Cindy Pokladnik -- baby girl.

Sympathy cards were sent to Brother Daniel Loykasek (loss of wife) and Sister Julia Trojacek (loss of sister).

July Meeting At Lodge 88 July 8th, at 7:30 p.m., the members of Lodge Pokrok No. 88, Houston, held their monthly meeting. All officers were present. The meeting was welt - conducted by our President Ermis, and all officers' and committee reports were efficiently presented by the responsible persons.

The list of membership applications was read and approved. This month we accepted 65 new members. It is not unusual for this time of year to have a large number of applicants because the pool seems to be inviting. Enjoy the summer, members, for it will soon be fall.Time really seems to fly.

Also, there are hamburgers now available at the pool, thanks to Sister Marie Kostomlatsky. I'm sure this is a treat after spending some time exercising in the pool.

Plans for District V Family Day are

progressing. Remember to keep this in mind for a good meal and lots of good entertainment. District V will frnish the meat, and members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert. A "Womanless Wedding," always a barrel of laughs, will be the highlight of planned entertainment.

Don't forget about the Benefit Dance, September 15th, with music by The Texas Brew. The abused children, who will benefit, thank you for your help.

District V YAD July 28th deserves your attendance. Support your youth.

Much increase in interest by lodge youth members recently speaks well of our club. A spaghetti dinner is being served by parents of our youth club members that day; only $4 for adults and $2.50 for children.

Sister Marie Stayton requested permission to purchase a banner to be displayed when our Beseda groups are performing at various functions. This will help promote our organization by informing spectators who these groups represent. The youth club wishes to earn the funds in several fund - raising activities for this purchase. Of course, approval was overwhelming.

Sister Hegwood led the singing of "Happy Birthday" to all our July celebrants. The meeting was adjourned before 9 p.m.

Dear Members: A good meeting of 20 members and 2 guests attended June 9, 1985 with President Lloyd House calling the meeting to order.

The table prayer was given by Joe Juricek, Jr. Secretary Tillie Valchar read the minutes of the last meeting, followed by correspondence.

A motion was made by Mary Ermis and seconded by Vlasta Juricek to have the next meeting September 8th with luncheon at K - Bobs. President Lloyd House will check Josie's and Golden Coral for after this meeting.

Members discussed different organizations to donate to Crime Stoppers and Transportation of Aged.

Door prizes were awarded to President Lloyd House and Frances Kovar.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon and fellowship.

Vince Pivonka made a motion to adjourn and Henry Mann seconded it.

District V Youth Achievement Day will be held this year at Lodge 88 Sunday, July 28th. District Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt announced that a spaghetti dinner will be served by the district youth and their parents on that day starting at 11 a.m. Advance tickets are now on sale and tickets will be available at the dinner. The ticket prices are $4 for an adult and $2.50 for children under the —SPJSTage of 12. Proceeds from this event will go directly into the Youth Camp Fund and DYC Dorothy reports that she has many donations for the food items so a very nice profit should be realized. Purchase of a meal ticket entitles you to a chance at a door prize.

Dorothy and her helpers have several lovely prizes so you can't go wrong. The Victoria County Czech Heritage Come and enjoy a delicious spaghetti Society had its regular quarterly dinner, enjoy the program starting at 1 meeting June 20, 1985 at the Victoria p.m., maybe win a prize and most County Electric Co - op Building.

Victoria County Czech Heritage Society Meeting

Jakobson explained why she is so interested in Texas Czech embroidery.

In Czecholsovakia, the elaborate costumes are all the same for each village)identical down to the last stitch.

In Texas, each Czech costume is an original. Each woman who makes her own or has it made, has her own design of embroidery on it. Dr. Jakobson has many beautiful color photographs of examples of Texas Czech work.

Eventually these will be in a traveling exhibit. Dr. Jakobson is a delightful person who is vitally interested in Texas Czechs. A person could just sit and talk to her for hours.

Dr. Jakobson was joined at supper before the meeting by five of the society members.

Several months ago the society was asked by the Victoria Public Library to present a children's program, pertaining to the Czech people, in the Bronte Room of the library. June 18, Doris Obsta presented three little stories on "Aunt Katuska and the Poppy Seed Cakes." She had prepared small poppy seed cakes for the children which they thoroughly enjoyed. Doris had on a lavender costume with a kerchief on her head. Ella Arnold, Joe and Evelyn Laza, three of the Czech Singers, rendered two songs.

The next regular quarterly meeting of the society will be September 19 at the Victoria County Electric Co - op Building.

Attention Bell County Czech Residents And Former Residents Czech family histories are still needed for the Bell County history being prepared by the Bell County Historical Commission.

Such histories can include those of any early settlers, of an yone who has lived in the county at least 50 years and anyone born in the county. These will be compiled in Volume II of the history which is considered the genealogy section.

Some guidelines to consider in writing the history are as follows: 1) A limit of 750 words is allotted.

2) Names, dates of birth and death, marriage and names of children of residents should be as complete as possible.

3) Narrative accounts of any accomplishments are welcomed.

4) Death recordings should, include dates, places of burial and whether graves are marked.

5) Pictures need to be glossy, black and white, 4 x 5 inch size, if possible.[No originals, please ] Histories or early communities and businesses are also needed. Pictures of early settlers, buildings and community scenes will be used where possible and may be submitted with the written materials.

All inforination should be addressed to E.A. Limmer, Jr., 3917 Cripple Creek, Temple, Texas 76502 by August 1, 1985.

This is a wonderful opportunity to have your family history recorded for future reference. Many years from now, your "great - grands" may wish they had some source of information to go to in order to learn their family tree.

I have written this to provoke thought and to try to make people question the word "progress" and redefine it. What about the habitat of affected wildlife? What about people who choose to be in agriculture and do not want to be part of cities? Must money always be the bottom line?

What about toxic wastes?

I leave you readers to answer these questions for yourselves. Please pressure the legislature to revoke this law. Please leave some rural areas of Texas untouched.

To The Editor Letter

Happy Fourth of July! The subject 1 am writing about possibly involves the clash of pursuits of happiness.

I have read the article on page 15 of the June 26 issue titled "Land Use In Texas." After reading it, I feel it ought to be called "Land Abuse In Texas." I once admired and adored the wide open spaces of my home state, but, since World War 11, 1 have observed the relentless development juggernaut described in the article. Texas' cities have been grabbing the prime agricultural land surrounding them since World War II. To aid them in this, the Texas legislature passed this unconscionable law in 1962 or 1963, which legalized land grabs ad infinitum by cities of 55,000 and over and developers for tax base purposes. I express my extremely strong objection to this phenomenon and ask that my fellow Texans who are concerned about preserving rural areas and stopping urban sprawl register your protest at the state and federal level.

This unconscionable law has been unjustly upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. It is a virtual license for developers and cities to rape the environment by placing the city tax base ahead of all other concerns. Woe betide anyone who owns land in the path of a developing metropolitan area of 55,000 or over. How much more land must be lost to "progress" before we wake up? Must Texas become a "slurb" from El Paso to Orange or from the Panhandle to the Rio Grande before we wake up and stop this environmental menace mislabled as "progress?" Please, NO! In 1957, I rode with the University of Texas Longhorn Band from Austin to New Orleans for the 1958 New Year's Day Sugarbowl game. On the way to and from it, we bypassed Houston on FM 1960. At that time it was truly a rural area. Just this past January I drove on that road again from Rosenberg on my way back to Ohio, my current residence of financial exile from my home state.

What a change there had been! It was practically all developed another abominable suburb of Greater Houston. I would have been better off to have taken the expressway through Houston.

The ranch northeast of Georgetown on which I spent the first eight years of my life has now become the victim of this type of "progress." First was the abominable San Gabriel dams. As a

Eagle Scout Court Of Honor Jason Grier began his scouting career in 1975 as a cub scout earning the Arrow of Light Award. Over the years Jason has served in a number of troop positions including Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, and is currently serving Troop 599 in Houston as an Assistant Scout Master. During the summers of 1983 and 1984, Jason served as a summer camp staff member at El Rancho Cima near San Marcos, Texas. He has also participated in several High Adventure trips to Philmont in New Mexico.

Jason is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and has earned 30 merit badges. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Jason collected food from the community to be distributed to the needy families from the Larkin Street Center.

Jason was a spring 1985 graduate of Westchester High School in Houston, Texas, where he also played football.

Jason's Eagle Court of Honor took place July 12, 1985, 7 p.m., at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, Houston, Texas.

Jason and his family, Mr. and Mrs. James D. Grier and brother, Jeff, are all members of Lodge 84 in Dallas.

IV YAP Results District

The Youth Achievement Day of District IV was held June 23, 1985 at the Senior Citzens Building, 500 E. Belknap in Seymour. We had a very good attendance; the weather was nice.

We were happy to have our SL President Howard Leshikar, his wife, and their two sons present with us and State Youth Director Sue Meadows.

With these persons being present, it made our YAD one of the best.

I also am proud to announce that we have a new youth club organized in Rowena Lodge No. 49, with Mrs. Linda Urbanek, youth leader. We were glad to have Tanya and Joe Urbanek to be in our YAD this year.

We had eleven youth members participating in the YAD; we had one king and two queen candidates; had entries in the four groups of talent and also in the group talent. We had 32 entries in crafts. The craft display was very good.

Visitors who attended were SL President Howard and Mary Leshikar and sons Cody and Ryan of Temple, Susan Brandon of San Angelo, David

and Linda Urbanek, Tanya and Joe of Rowena, Janet Rusch and 3 children from Odessa, State Youth birector Sue Meadows and District IV Director Stanley Broz and Martha Broz. Thank you all for coming and making YAD a success. Thanks to all the parents for bringing their children, and to all grandparents who came to view the work and talent of our youth. They will be able to carry on the future of our Society.

V Youth Achievement Day District

July 28, 1985, Lodge 88, Houston will be hosting the District V Youth Achievement Day (YAD). All are invited to come.

In order to raise additional funds for camp expenses, the parents of District V youth will be serving a spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased from any youth club member or the leaders. Price of the dinner will be: adult plate, $4 and child plate (12 years and under), $2.50. As a special bonus for purchasing a dinner ticket, you will be able to put your name in ? for a drawing of items donated by some of the local merchants.

District V Camp News Camp Lone Star --- HERE WE COME! July 21st at 1 p.m., we will be leaving Lodge 88 for Camp Lone Star in La Grange, Texas. We will return July 24th about 9 p.m.

A schedule of fun and games will be designed from swimming, archery, team trust games, softball, hiking, crafts and dancing. We will have a campfire and outdoor cookout.

District VI Plans Educational Tour Dear District VI Youth Members: The annual Educational Tour will be Wednesday, July 24, to Galveston, Texas. The charter bus will leave Wal Mart in El Campo at 6 a.m. and return at 10 p.m.

This year we will be taking only one bus, a 47 - passenger. Active youth members will have first choice. You must notify your lodge leader if you are interested.

In Galveston we will visit Sea Arama, Transportation and Commerce Railroad Museum, Bishop Palace, American National Insurance Tower, and walk the sea wall.

The cost of the bus fare will be $10 -five dollars for bus fare and five dollars for Sea Arama. You will need to bring your own drink and sack lunch.

Wear comfortable clothes, have a good attitude, and plan to have a great day.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Wins Many YAD Awards Dear Members: Our youth club meeting was held at 2:30 p.m. July 7 with a fair attendance. I hope all of our members will start attending because we need all of you. We will have new craft and games.

June 28, the youth clubbers held their swimming party at the West Playdium. They enjoyed sandwiches plus trimmings and drinks, also a birthday cake for their youth leader.

Thank you very much for the cake and gift; it was pretty.

The District III YAD activities were held at Lodge 66; our queen was Lanette Hykel and Tammi Dobecka served as duchess. Lanette Hykel achieved 2 first places in craft, Shirley Dobecka earned 2 first places also in craft; both of them will be going to State YAD. Our additional top district winners were Shirley Dobecka, "Teenager of the Year," and Kevin Dobecka, "Junior of the Year." The Junior Group Talent received second place and our scrapbook scored in third place. There were also many second and third place ribbons awarded.

District III Youth Achievement Day at Elm Mott was well - attended. The food was good and the host Lodge 66 members were very nice and friendly.

Our lodge annual picnic will be held Sunday, July 21st. We will need all of our youth members to help with the games stand, cake walk, fish pond and dunking Sam, so please call me and let me know what shift you wish to work or just come and help. WE NEED YOU! We also need some items for our games and cakes for the cake walk.

The youth club is planning a trip to Six Flags. They didn't set a date for bowling.

We are planning a homemade ice cream party and watermelon cut soon.

Birthday celebrants for July are James Hromadka and Melissa Mynar.

Shirley Dobecka will bring the cake for August.

Dear SPJST Readers, July 7, 1985 was Youth Achievement Day for District VII. It was held in Corpus Christi at the SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol Hall.

I entered four activities, and I won second place in Handicraft on my "God's Eye," third place in Pictorial Arts on my picture, and third place on my Individual Talent.

It was a fun - day. A lot of my friends were there from other SPJST lodges.

Lodge 30, Taiton YC Discuss Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting July 7 at the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar. The pledge was led by Valerie Roye and Linda Treumer said the prayer.

Poems were said by Michelle Srubar, Jean Dorotik, Marcy Dorotik, Stephanie Roye and Valerie Roye.

There was one birthday celebrant for July. We recognized Stephanie Roye by singing "Happy Birthday."

Contest winners in ages 6 - 9 were: 1st - Lenice Kaspar, 2nd - Michael Kaspar, 3rd - Valerie Roye. In 10 - 12 was Stephanie Roye. In 13 - 17 were: 1st - Jean Dorotik. 2nd - Michelle Srubar, 3rd - Marcy Dorotik. The contest pertained to Fourth of July.

We discussed YAD and our summer outing. Our outing will be at the American Legion. Members may go swimming anytime in the afternoon.

We will have our meeting at 4 p.m. In case of rain, our meeting will be held at the Taiton Community Center at 2:30 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned and we played games and made Mickey Mouse pins for craft.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Sublime and the SPJST Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillian Walters; a son, Royce Walters of Pasadena; 3 sisters, Mrs. Ellie Fojt of Bila Hora, Mrs. Ed Schindler of Hallettsville and Mrs. Clara Schaefer of Victoria; 6 grandchildren and 3 great - grandchildren.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Bila Hora No. 16, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother JOHN J. FOJT, who died June 16, 1985 in Youens Memorial Hospital after a 4 - month illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 18 from Hubbard Funeral Chapel for John Fojt, 64, of Weimar, with Rev. Hertry Beseda officiating.

Brother Fojt worked for Colorado County Precinct 2 for 34 years before retiring in 1982.

Born June 18, 1920 near Hallettsville, he was the son of John

A.11' and Annie (Valchar) Fojt. He served 43 months in the U.S. Army in World War II including 20 months overseas.

Brother Fojt was a member of VFW Post 5875, American Legion Post 259, and SPJST Lodge No. 16.

Survivors include one son; Kenneth Fojt of Weimar; one sister, Wilma Fojt; one brother, Jaro Fojt of Weimar and one nephew, Howard Fojt of Houston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ervin Fojt.

Sister Stefka was born November 21, 1907 in Burleson County to the late George A. Sefcik and Frances Kubin Sefcik. She was a lifelong resident of Burleson County. She was a homemaker and a lifetime member of the New Tabor Brethren Church. She was a faithful and active member of the church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, was a charter

member of the Christian Sisters Society and a member of the Mutual Aid Society.

Sister Stefka was married to John Edward Stefka, Sr. December 26, 1926 in the home of her parents in the New Tabor community and lived in this community until her death. Mr. Stefka preceded her in death May 30, 1973.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Friday, June 21 in the New Tabor Brethren Church with the Rev. Albert Michalik and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Brethren Church Cemetery.

campaign in a speech that hailed the Statue as a symbol of reciprocation; America held forth to Europe the liberty the New World had developed from the Old. Paris, Le Havre, and a few other cities, along with the Freemasons and some business firms, responded to appeals for funding the Statue and some 200,000 francs were raised.

However, the total gifts that dribbled in were far from the amount that Bartholdi indicated was necessary.

While the idea of Franco - American friendship aroused great sentiment, the idea of contributing funds for a monument to grace a distant harbor was not especially stimulating, and the fund - raising drive bogged down.

However, in 1879, the drive for funds was resumed, directed this time at a broad pool of potential donors.

The central theme was a lottery with prominent firms donating 538 valuable prizes to be offered to lucky winners among the 300,000 tickets sold. This, together with a few other fund - raising programs and several large donations, brought in the remaining amount.

July 7, 1881, the campaign came to a close with a dinner at which it was announced that the money to pay for the cost of construction - the equivalent of $400,000 - was in hand.

Work Begins Bartholdi began work on the statue about 1875 and his first design, plaster, was a little over four feet high.

The model went through a number of changes before the 151 - foot Statue of Liberty was constructed from a new nine - foot model.

To resolve engineering problems associated with the design and construction of the Statue, Bartholdi called upon the noted engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. Already well established, Eiffel was to later gain added fame for the tower he would erect on the banks of the Seine.

Gustave Eiffel designed an interior framework of iron upon which the exterior copper sheets would be fastened. Originally, the surface of the statue was to be constructed from bronze, but this idea was abandoned because of the weight of the metal.

Instead, the exterior of the statue was fashioned from pure copper sheets about 1/8 of an inch thick. The hundreds of separate copper sheets that had been hammered into shape by skilled craftsmen were hung on the iron framework Eiffel had designed.

Hundreds of Parisians came each Sunday to the yards of Gaget, Gauthier & Company to watch the statue take shape. Early in 1884, the head of the Statue of Liberty rose above the rooftops of Paris, ready for her trip to the New World. On July 4, 1884, with great ceremony, the completed statue was handed over to the United States by the people of France. The presentation was made to the U.S. Minister to France by Ferdinand de Lesseps, head of the

12/VESTNIKâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Wednesday, July 17, 1985 Franco - American Union, builder of the Suez Canal, and promoter of the Panama Canal.

Bound for America In December 1884, the statue, which had been dismantled and packed in 49 mammoth wooden crates along with her iron framework in 36 others, began her trip to America. Special wagons hauled the 500,000 pounds of metal and wood to the Gare Saint - Lazare from which a train of 70 cars carried it to the port of Rouen. The following May, Liberty sailed aboard the warship Isere to the United States.

The site for the Statue of Liberty was Bedloe's Isâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;and, a 12 - acre tract lying 2,950 yards southwest of the tip of Manhattan. The island had been owned in the 17th century by a Walloon named Issac Bedloe and was known as Bedloe's Island until August 3, 1956, when President Eisenhower approved a congressional resolution changing it to Liberty Island.

While the French were appealing to the people for contributions to build the monument to Franco - American friendship, Americans were being asked to provide a pedestal upon which the Statue would rest. A dinner at the Union League Club in New York on November 22, 1881, opened the fund drive. But donations were slow in coming until 1883, when the publisher of the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer, picked up the gauntlet on behalf of Liberty. With an editorial on May 14, 1883, the World attacked New York's millionaires who spent fortunes on their own luxuries, yet stood around haggling over the pittance necessary to provide the statue's pedestal.

Newspaper Campaign The World started its own drive and in March, 1885, Pulitzer pointed out that it would be "an irrevocable disgrace to New York City and the American Republic to have France send us this splendid gift without our having provided so much as a landing place for it."

The response was overwhelming as letters poured in with nickels and occasional dollars. School children played a major part in contributions and enthusiasm for the effort. In two months the drive surpassed its goal. A total of $270,000 had been raised, with more than $100,000 from the newspaper campaign alone.

October 23, 1886, President Grovel Cleveland presided over the colorful ceremonies at the statue that now towered above New York harbor on a pedestal 89 feet high, which in turn rested on a 65 - foot, 11 - point, star shaped base that had been part of an abandoned fort. The fort, built between 1806 and 1811 to defend New York against naval attack, had become Fort Wood and was utilized for various military purposes before falling into disrepair. It was abandoned in 1877, paving the way for the erection of the statue on the site.

Immigration The Statue of Liberty did not become closely identified with the great flow of immigrants who landed on nearby Ellis Island until after the turn of the century. In 1903, a bronze plaque carrying the sonnet "The New Colossus," composed in 1883 by Emma Lazarus, was affixed to the statue. It strengthened the tie between the statue and immigration in the following lines by the young poetess: Give me your tired, your poor Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these the homeless, tempest tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

Immigrants were originally processed through Castle Garden on the tip of Manhattan, but public outrage over the scandalously inadequate facilities forced its closing in 1890. Following the closing of Castle Garden, the U.S. Government assumed responsibility for immigrant processing, and Ellis Island, located near Bedloe's Island, became the official east coast entry point to America in 1892. In the ensuing years up until 1954 when it was closed, Ellis Island was host to some 70 percent of the 24 million immigrants entering the United States.

In 1965 Ellis Island was declared an historic site and added to the Statue of Liberty National Monument in recognition of its role as the nation's foremost immigration gateway. The Statue of Liberty had been declared a national monument in 1924 and placed under the jurisdiction of the War Department until 1933, when it came under the supervision of the National Park Service of the Department of the Interior.

Ellis Island: The Immigration Experience No name is more closely linked with massive American immigration than Ellis Island. For three decades, 1892 1924, the greatest incoming tide of humanity in the nation's history swept through this narrow portal in Upper New York Bay. From its opening in 1892 to its closing in 1954, more than 17 million newcomers arrived at Ellis Island. Today almost half of all living Americans can trace their heritage to one or more family members who first stepped onto American soil at Ellis Island.

While Miss Liberty beckoned nearby, the thirty - three structures on this island became the theater for an enormous and repetitious drama. The masses of crowded Europe - manual laborers, domestics, uprooted peasants, blacksmiths, displaced artisans and families - trooped off the barges, up the quay and into the main building. They were received into the ground floor baggage room where they deposited their worldly belongings before climbing the flights of stairs to the Great Hall for medical and legal examinations.

The medical exam began as the immigrant climbed the stairs into the Great Hall. Doctors were waiting at the top of the steps, watching the immigrants as they climbed. Was the immigrant breathing heavily? Was he limping? Did he have any type of physical deformity that would hinder him from finding a job here in the United States, or as a result of which he would become a public charge?

When the immigrant reached the top of the stairs, he walked in a circle in front of the doctor who then examined the immigrant's hair and face. The physician was also looking for any type of contagious disease, whether it be curable or incurable. If he suspected that the immigrant had a medical problem, he pulled the immigrant out of the line and marked his clothing with a piece of chalk - an "L" for lameness, an "H" for suspected heart disease, and an "E" for eye problems. The immigrant then entered the Great Hall and remained there until he could be taken upstairs for a full examination.

After the immigrant had completed his medical inspection, he worked his way through the long lines to the legal inspectors. The inspectors had in front of them the ships' "manifest sheets," lists of all the passengers who had arrived on the steamships that day.

Each immigrant wore a manifest tag on his clothing with two numbers on it.

It indicated to the inspector the page and line on which the immigrant's name appeared. Beside the immigrant's name the sheet contained answers to questions he had presumably been asked in Europe before he was sold his steamship ticket.

The steamship companies were responsible for the immigrants and were supposed to conduct medical and legal examinations before they sold the immigrant a ticket. The inspector at Ellis Island merely re - asked the questions, approximately 30 in number, in rapid fashion. The inspectors spoke in English, although the immigrant was provided with an interpreter as needed.

The questions went something like this: What is your name? Where were you born? Where are you coming from? Where are you going? Have you ever been to the United States before?

Do you have any relatives here? Where do they live? Is there anyone who can come out to meet you on Ellis Island?

Who paid for your passage? Do you have any money? "Let me see it." Do you have any skills? Do you have a trade? Do you have a job waiting for you here in United States? Are you an anarchist? Are you a polygamist? Do you have a criminal record? If the immigrant answered any of these questions improperly, he was taken out of line and detained until he could appear before the Board of Special Inquiry, the legal examiners on Ellis Island.

For 80 percent of the immigrants, the average stay on Ellis Island was only 3 to 5 hours. Twenty percent were detained for either a medical or a legal reason, and between 1892 and 1924 only two percent, approximately a quarter of a million people, were excluded from admission to the United States.

Individuals detained for medical reasons were given a full physical examination. If the immigrant had a curable medical problem, he was cared for in the hospital building across the ferry slip until he was well enough to enter the country. If he had a contagious, incurable disease, entry to the U.S. was denied. He was cared for in the contagious disease wards on the far side of the island until a steamship could take him back to Europe.

Trachoma was the most common medical reason for exclusion. It was a very contagious then .- incurable disease common in the Mediterranean area that resulted in blindness.

Immigrants detained for legal reasons had to appear before the Board of Special Inquiry. This Board had 5 members - a stenographer, an interpreter, and 3 voting members.

The vote of 2 out of 3 determined.if the immigrant would be allowed to remain in the United States. The Board's decision could be appealed at various levels up to and including the Secretary of Commerce and Labor, who, at one time or another, had overall control of immigration processing in the United States. One of the more prevalent legal problems was contracted labor. The Alien Contract Labor Law, passed in 1885, prohibited American employers from bringing immigrants to the United States either to work for lower wages than American workers were willing to accept or to break up strikes here in the United States. If an immigrant was found to be "contracted labor," he was not allowed to immigrate. However, most immigrants who were held on Ellis Island were considered temporary detainees. Many were waiting for a

relative or a friend to pick them up on the island or were awaiting money or directions to a final destination.

For those who were detained, their stay was financed by the steamship company.

The company was considered legally responsible for every immigrant until he or she was admitted to the United States. If one was excluded, the steamship company was required to provide free passage to his port of origin. If a person was under the age of twelve, the steamship company provided passage for him and one parent to return.

The dining room at Ellis Island sold food with which most immigrants were familiar - thick soups, stews, fresh breads, milk, and fruit. And there was a chapel in which all the various religious groups could worship.

Most people were processed the day they arrived. Those required to stay longer were quartered in dormitories or in the island hospital. Charitable agencies maintained offices on the island to assist newcomers or help them get in touch with relatives and friends on the mainland. The betrothed were summoned and marriage often took place on the spot.

Out of sheer expediency, unexpected matches were sometimes made.

Landing cards were issued to those who passed muster. Ferries shuttled passengers the mile to Manhattan or the scant 300 yards to the New Jersey piers. Offices for exchanging currencies, purchasing railroad tickets, and sending telegrams did business on the island. Most contingencies were met, but in the babble of many spoken languages, communications often went awry. On one occasion a group of 16 immigrants destined for Amsterdam Avenue, Manhattan arrived in Amsterdam, an up - state New York community.

Approximately one - third of the immigrants admitted through Ellis were ferried to Battery Park in Manhattan and settled in the New York area. The remaining two - thirds bought railroad tickets on Ellis Island and awaited ferries that took them to New Jersey and on to major terminals where they caught trains to destinations throughout the United States.

Until the 1870s, the individual states had exercised what little control of immigration was necessary. A vast underpopulated country held open the door and welcomed foreigners. But in the latter half of the 19th century, as the number of the newcomers began to spiral, fear 'and concern about the social and economic effects of the country's longstanding open door policy also began to rise. Then, during the 1870s, more than 280,000 immigrants a year streamed into the country. The need for a clear national immigration policy became overwhelming.

Under congressional pressure, America's open door to immigrants was closed. Yielding to constituent demands, successive Congresses enacted a series of regulations and restrictions. Not only individuals but nationalities came under scrutiny, and national quotas were adopted. As a result, the massive influx of immigrants had ended by the 1920s.

Ellis Island continued to serve as an immigration center although portions of the facilities were turned to other uses.

The island became a detention and rehabilitation center during World War II. From 1942 to 1946 it was a Coast Guard training center. It was finally closed and vacated by the Continued On Page 15...

It was reopened as an immigration museum and became an integral part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

In 1975 Congress appropriated funds to clean up and stabilize a portion of the main buildings, and in 1976 the island was opened to the public for tours from May through October.
