The Flag We Love Why do we love and honor the American flag? Because it stands for great principles. It has defended us in war and in peace. It is a symbol of high ideals, speaking with dramatic eloquence of the courage, the struggles, the integrity of men on many battlefields, on the seas, and in the air.

The flag proclaims sacrifice, suffering, honor. Above all, we love our flag because it emphasizes in its stars and stripes true civil and human freedom, that liberty that makes the individual master of his destiny.

The flag was adopted as our glorious banner because it seemed to bespeak beauty and simplicity. It seemed to point toward what our fathers were trying to obtain, a republic with free institutions wherein the citizen in every walk of life could do his bit, build a useful career, and be assured of reasonable encouragement through justice.

But the flag is still in the making, for our nation is ever in the making. The flag will be just what we make it. It is to have no blots of injustice, divided allegiance, disloyalty, it will be because all of us are working to develop true Americanism. There is room for all under the flag who are willing to do their full part, with brave deeds as well as with lip service.

The flag lives because what is right lives ---truth lives; honor lives. Those are not only inalienable, but they are indestructible rights in character. It is great to be true to the flag and its meaning. *** In June 1885, one hundred years ago, Mr. Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher in a small school in Fredonia, Wisconsin called his class of students outside and, by the flagpole with the U.S. flag waving at the top, told them the story of our flag. Thus was born "Flag Day" which is set for the date of June 14th each year, the date it is celebrated. This year is the centennial of Flag Day! It's nothing but a piece of cloth -more appropriately, several pieces -sewn together out of virginal white, rose red, cobalt blue. From the manufacturer's same bolts of fabric come awnings, or parachutes, or spinnakers. But joined together...this certain way...in this special combination...it becomes something else.

Our flag has waved over Fort McHenry where our national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" was originated, from atop a 546 foot high lump of volcanic rock known as Mount Suribachi on an island known as Iwo Jima. It's flown over beaches as a brilliant signal of liberation to the oppressed: Beaches like Omaha, Utah,

Palermo, Mindanao. It's been a welcoming beacon to tired crews in tired aircraft, limping back to a little patch of foreign - soil homeland from places named Stuttgart, Tokyo, Hanoi.

It's gone up and into space, spreading the first rectangular shadow of its kind across the moon's dusty surface...gone down through a spreading oil slick from the U.S.S. Arizona. It fluttered, grimly, over Hickam Field December 7, 1941 (Pearl Harbor)...and at half - mast, sadly, over the White House November 22, 1963 (President John F. Kennedy's assassination). It's been to the Arctic and Antarctic and most places in between; including, briefly, a chunk of wind - swept desert in Iran and the warm - breezed sands of Grenada. The list rolls on: Tripoli, the Alamo, Fort Sumter, Vera Cruz, San Juan Hill, Belleau Wood, El Alamein, Corregidor, the 38th Parallel, Suez, The Gulf of Tonkin.

It's endured The Berlin Crisis, The Bay of Pigs, and the disaster of Watergate; waved proudly above the marching feet of soldiers as Paris was liberated in 1944 -- been desecrated under the trampling feet of political protesters during a Chicago convention in 1968.

For a decade, not too long ago, it was considered unsophisticated, naive, not "cool," to pay the proper respect deserved these colors. It was "square" to ponder, to honor, what they represented. Even now, to some, they are just an inconvenience to be tolerated as they rise at the beginning of a football game. Ironically, they seem to mean more in the hearts of those who have sought their sheltered shores than to many of the natives born under the freedoms they stand for.

Your flag...my flag...our flag. More blue than the sky it flies in, red as the blood of those who have died to protect it, white as the crosses and Stars of David under which those dead are buried. Changing through the years as each new State of the Union has added its star -- never changing as a symbolic determination of purpose and resolve. A glowing portrait of freedom, equally, the same as our Statue of Liberty for those who would revere or defile it.

So this June 14, this Flag Day -- or Memorial Day, or Independence Day -- or even the next time you happen to glance up and see "Old Glory" ruffling in the breeze, take just a moment to really look at it, to weigh -good and bad -- what we have endured and enjoyed as a nation over the last two centuries.

Tax Status On Fraternals TO ALL MEMBERS: I have received communications from Raymond Klee, Executive Vice President of the NFCA, informing me that President Reagan has decided not to include the repeal of taxing fraternals in his tax proposal.

President Reagan has decided not to tax fraternals or upset in any way the tax exempt status of fraternals. This indeed is a victory for the fraternal benefit system.

This victory could not have been achieved without the support and overwhelming response from SPJST members throughout the state. I would like to thank all members who took time out from their busy schedules to write letters and make phone calls to the White House. Your concern and interest headed off a tax repeal which would have dealt a serious blow to all fraternals.

I will keep you informed of any changes or further developments as they occur.

District I And II Sales Representatives Meet Sales Representatives from District I and II met with Vice President Bernie Gebala and their Director May 29th and 30th. The meetings were to discuss changes that have and will be taking place within our Society and those that will affect the Insurance Department.

The new procedures were explained and why they were necessary to implement. Some of the major topics discussed were direct billing, why sales representatives have to sign a contract, why we are selling annuities, what interest sensitive products are, why we have to take a special course to sell Universal Life, and many more. At the conclusion of the meeting a discussion was held and suggestions were noted to bring to the Supreme Lodge for action.

Both districts had outstanding representation, and the general feeling was that everyone left with a better knowledge and understanding of our plans for now and for the future.

CESAT Meeting In SPJST Home Office

Efforts are made by CESAT for Czech language courses wherever possible in Texas and to coordinate financial support from CzechAmerican organizations fbr the teaching of Czech in Texas. Its Suborganization, the Texas Council of Higher Education, (also known as Matice), is responsible for setting up loans of financial support to certain applicants who enroll or intend to enroll in a Czech course and show an interest in Czech ethnic affairs.

Among the goals of CESAT is the goal to strive for increased ethnic awareness of our people in Texas. It was learned that contrary to the belief that CESAT is an organization for college exstudents of Czech only, the Association is accepting the membership of any Czech-Americans interested in Czech heritage and the preservation of the Czech language in Texas.

Among those attending the CESAT meeting were Calvin Chervenka (Left), and Jos. J. Skrivanek (Right). Calvin Chervenka serves as the Chairman of the CESAT Executive Committee for Higher Education and Jos. Skrivanek is President of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas.

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas met on Saturday, May 25th, at the SPJST Home Office Building.

Some 50 officials and interested members of the organization and its subcommittees were present for the meeting.

We gathered some interesting information about the organization while visiting with the CESAT officials

and reading their informative brochure. CESAT President, Marvin Marek, indicated that the purpose of the organization was to promote the Czech language and culture through education, and through grants, loans and scholarships. He spoke of the importance of encouraging young people to enroll in Czech classes in the institutions where such courses are

Dear Readers, The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 was held Sunday, June 2, 1985, at 3 p.m.

Lanette and Keith Hykel led the SPJST Pledge. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother John Lee Marek and Brother Charles Conner.

Secretary Barbara Hykel and Reporter Peggy Dobecka, were absent.

There were 15 members present.

Sister Rose Uptmor read the minutes from the previous meeting. They were approved as read.

Correspondence was read from the Charles Conner family and John Marek family for the spray of flowers and from our Supreme Lodge president concerning the domino tournament.

All other reports were in order.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported she attended the youth leaders meeting held May 5, 1985. She congratulated all the graduates. The youth will have a swim party. Sister Schuetz named the new officers for the 1985/1986 year. The, club donated flowers and food to John Marek funeral. The youth will be donating to the Tours CYO paper drive and Metallic Age group. Keith Hykel brought the birthday cake. Birthday celebrant for June is Elaine Stuckly.

Brother George Straten gave the Board of Trustees' report. The annual picnic was discussed; the fund - raising tickets are ready.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be Friday, July 5, and the regular meeting will be Sunday, July 7, at 3 p .m .

Lodge 54, West Meets Quarterly The second quarterly meeting of 1985 for Lodge 54 was held at 2 p.m. June 2nd. There were 23 members present.

Jennifer Kocian led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother Frank Husak who died May 14, and for all previously departed brothers and sisters of the lodge.

A roll call of officers revealed that all were present.

Recording Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the March 10th meeting. After one correction was made, these were approved as read.

Items of correspondence were also read.

Financial reports were given by Treasurer Freddie Kaluza .These were accepted as read.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report. This was also approved as read. Policy gains are as follows: Annuity policy on Willie Mae Dornak, additional insurance on Brandon Todd Kaluza, and a renewable convertible policy on Marvin E. Marek.

President Rudy Sefcik informed the members that the tax exemption for fraternal organizations has not been rescinded at this time and explained how important it was for the members to keep accurate records of all hours and monies spent on acts of fraternal service. Our grand totals of Lodge 54 for 1984 were 7,318 volunteer hours and $3,783 charitable contributions.

President Rudy Sefcik also read the letter from Howard Leshikar encouraging us to help in the Child Abuse Program. He then explained how difficult it has been to try to obtain group liability coverage for all lodges. He read the invitation to the domino tournament to be held and explained the rules covering this.

We were very happy to have Brother Henry Grossman back in our midst after his recent illness. Other members on the sick list are Mr. and Mrs. Steve Chupik. We wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

Our lodge had eight members who graduated from West High School this year, namely, Eugene Bayer, Jr., Tammie Chudej, Kevin Chupik, James L. Kolacek, Kay Maynard, Gregory Picha, Tammie Willenborg and Floyd Wolf, Jr. Melissa Marek graduated from Penelope High as valedictorian of her class with a grade point average of 98.227. Melissa is the daughter of Brother and Sister Ednfund Marek.

I am no longer the reporter for Lodge 74. I wanted to write a letter and explain some questions some members have when they read the band calendar in the Vestnik and see the lodge will be closed June 15th. All kinds of rumors are circulating because of this. The fact is June 15th is the Famous Fiddlers' Festival and Lions Rodeo. The officers, trustees and members voted to close on this Saturday night only and give our support to these two fine organizations that sponsor these two events. We will be open again June 22nd with the Honky Tonk Hearts. The young people will be happy to hear we will soon be having video games for them to enjoy.

Other items voted on at the last meeting was to have direct billing in the insurance department.

Our attendance to the Saturday night dances has been off, but we are confident that will improve now that school is out and all the extra activities are over.

To celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary, Gus and Ann Urbanovsky journeyed to Europe May 14 for 18 days. They made stops in London, England; Paris, France; Lausanne, Switzerland; Milan, Rome, Italy; Florence, and , Venice, Innsbruck, Austria; Heidelberg and Mannheim, Germany; and Amsterdam, Holland. They viewed Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, and St. Paul's Cathedral while in England and in Paris they saw Notre Dame Cathedral and had dinner at the famous "Moulin Rouge." On the way to Italy they reported the Alps were breathtaking and the miles and miles of vineyards were something to behold. Gus and Ann were honored to see Pope John - Paul in St. Peter's Houston Square serving Mass in Italian and in English. Dear Members: Our members recited the pledge to our flag and stood for a moment of silence for a departed member, Brother Anton Koncak.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Salac and approved.

Correspondence from the Supreme Lodge and a thank you note from the Steffans were also acknowledged.

The following committees gave their reports: Entertainment - Brother Jim Novak, Youth Club - YL Bessie Petr reported the club was holding its meeting and YAD preparation. Special Committee Report - Sister Salac read the list of donations to this project.

House Committee - Chairman Salac thanked his committee, namely, Brother Olson and Brother P. Pokladnik for projects finished; also a report on the new bar being installed was discussed. Hall Rental - Brother Emil Petr reported on the rentals for the month of June. Baseball Report Brother Ben Jarma invites all to attend any game, he also reported the team was winning in its league. Decorating Committee - Sister Olson (in -her absence) Brother Olson reported plans are still being worked on to have the best 4th of July celebration on the 5th of July!

Something closer to date is our next lodge meeting June 14 at 7 p.m. This is Initiation Day for new members. Our sales repres&itatives invite you to be on hand to enjoy free beer that will be served to all before dinner. A Thank-You From Lodge 172, Pasadena Sunday, May 5, 1985 was a wonderful, successful day in Pasadena. We held the benefit for Travis Shannon's liver transplant. We had a wonderful turnout. Even the weather was beautiful.

I would like to say THANK YOU to all the people who helped and donated their time, money, and gifts. The names are too many to mention in this letter, but those of you who worked, donated, and came out to offer support to little Travis and his family, know who you are; "pat" yourself on the back and know you are appreciated.

The food that all of the ladies prepared was delicious; everyone enjoyed it.

Our auction and other project were very successful, it was the first time we tried an auction at Lodge 172.

Commissioner Jim Fonteno and Judge Steve Phelps did the auction for us, raising $2,083 during a 40 - minute auction; all prizes were donated; the prizes and donors are too numerous to list, but I must mention at least 1 item, the "State of Texas Flag," that was flown over the Capitol San Jacinto Day was donated by State Representative Erwin Barton.

As of now we have $7,416.69 for little Travis Shannon; of course, we know it is not enough to do his surgery, but along with the other benefits, it will help.

In August 1984, we held a benefit for the Harris County Child Abuse program and raised over $5,000 and ".; one we held raising well over $7,000.

Isn't it amazing what one small lodge, in Pasadena can do with a few willing, hardworking members. Think of all the good the large lodges could do for humanity, because all it takes is willing workers. Of course, I must admit that my position as Fraternal Coordinator is helped a great deal by being the wife of Entertainment Chairman Joe Tanecka of Lodge 172; it gives me the opportunity to have all of these wonderful bands play for our benefits free of charge.

I have a great deal of heartfelt sympathy for all of our members who chose not to help in any way or to attend because they missed a wonderful opportunity to meet and help a tiny little human being. By helping little Travis you really help yourself when you reach out with a helping hand; that is when you know what it means to be a part of a fraternal organization.

180, Burleson Plans "Fun Afternoon" Event

The SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson meeting was held at 7:30 p.m. May 21, 1985. The members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Our lodge purchased several new items for the lodge, such as a new lawnmower, hosemobile and chair

racks, now all we need is some muscle power. Anyone?

The Entertaining Committee has made a few plans for the coming year.

July 14 - We will have an ice cream and game party, starting at 2 p.m. All members are invited to come and have a `Tun - Afternoon;" either bring ice cream or cake or cookies and plan to eat and play games. Then August 25 - The lodge will have its anniversary with dancing from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. with music by Harold Strand, so reserve that afternoon to have fun with us at Lodge 180.

Our "Get - Well" wishes go to Martha Boeneish and Bill Rusell and other sisters and brothers who have been in and out of the hospital, or on the sick list.

Friends Join To Aid Sick Child All Shanny knows is that her tummy hurts.

Until a couple of months ago, Shannon Smith was a bright energetic 5 - year - old, whose happy world centered around her mom, Naomi, her mom's fiance, Rick, two cats and Children's World Day Care Center.

Now her world includes scores of doctors, nurses, medicines and tubes, and a hospital room at Children's Medical Center.

Last Monday doctors wheeled the 4 foot 47 - pound little girl into the operating room for exploratory surgery. What they found was tumors covering her liver, stomach and pancreas.

Shannon was diagnosed as having a rare form of cancer called Islets Carcimona. Only 62 people have ever been reported as having it, so there is no doctor who has treated enough of these victims to be considered a specialist. Her chances for survival are 50/50 if a. successful treatment is found.

Friends of Shannon and her mother have put together a fund to help defray the costs of Shannon's treatment, and a special account set up at National Bank of Grand Prairie in Shannon's name for those wishing to donate.

Friends have planned a car wash, to be held from I to 5 p.m., Saturday in the parking lot of the National Bank of Grand Prairie and jars have been placed at area businesses and banks.

Area businesses have been donating items for a fund raising project to be held June 14th. The grand prize is a ladies' diamond bracelet from Bernard's Jewelers.

Other businesses which have contributed include Curtis Mathes, Soccer Unlimited, Sharron Wilson Jewelry, Jerry's Movieland, Murfy's Boots, Leddy Bros., Merry Poppers, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Modern Office Supply, and Video Exchange.

Lodge 187, Round Rock Activity [Letter Delayed] Dear Members and Friends: We at Lodge 187, Round Rock would like to wish everyone a safe and happy summer and to get the summer off to a good start.

We held our first Polka Fest. We featured four bands including Fritz Hodde, Eddie Ray and The Polka Dots, and The Wence Shimek Orchestra.

The tickets were $5 per person and the dance was from 2 to 10 p.m. We also served a meal from 12 noon to 6 p.m. for $3 a plate. The menu was sausage and sauerkraut, new potatoes and green beans.

Sunday, June 9 was an afternoon and evening spent eating good food and entertainment.

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond are Dorothea Bockhorn, Gilbert Randermann and Cleo Schmerber. We are sorry to hear Rose Hatchett and Stella Dreamer are hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital and wish them a speedy recovery.

We regret the loss of Betty Lehmann, Lucy l3rod, Frances Hlavaty and Ella Stacy. They will be missed by our staff and other residents.

The senior citizen luncheons given by the Immanuel United Church of Christ and St. Michael's Catholic Church were attended by Tony Ondracek, Annie Stavinoha, Mary Elsa Lindsay, Virgie Richardson and Moody Flagg.

Monday, May 6, 1985 and Wednesday, May 22, 1985, in the afternoon, the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

The KCs came to play bingo Tuesday evenings, May 7 and May 28

with the residents. The residents enjoyed the bingo and enjoyed visiting with the ones present.

Nursing Home Week started May 12 with Mother's Day and ended May 17th. Monday morning, May 13, the residents had sent off balloons in the air with their names and addresses in them. Tuesday morning, May 14, the Good Beginning Nursery came to entertain and visit the residents. The residents really enjoyed the group.

Wednesday afternoon, May 15, was Recognition of Volunteers. Rev. Holmes from the Baptist Church in Damon was guest speaker.

Administrator Harvey Marx said a few words to the volunteers and handed out certificates and pins for appreciation of the volunteers.

Sandwiches, chips, vegetable dish, dips, cake, punch and coffee were served. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon. Friday, May 17 was Open House all day with special guests at noon who were Mayor John Stern.

Chief of Police Rodney Kimmons and his wife, Jan, Sara Gless and J.P. Gary Fredrickson. Mayor John Stern was guest speaker to the residents. The day was enjoyed by all.

Thursday morning, May 23, residents Marie Bertram, Minnie Graeber, Annie Stavinoha, Virgie Richardson, Martha Stuchly, Hilda Cole, Louise Jane, Albina Foroi, Frances Jacob and Mathilda Hartfiel, Administrator Harvey Marx, LVN Aurrora Longoria, LVN Elaine Smith, SAD Martha Marx, and Paul Legendre (volunteer) went to Brazos Bend State Park and had a wiener roast. Everyone enjoyed the day.

Wednesday afternoon, May 29, Ben Bacica entertained Ella Bacica with a birthday party. A few friends. and relatives attended.

Thursday morning, May 30, residents Tony Ondracek, Agnes Perkins, Hilda Cole, Martha Stuchly, Annie Stavinoha, Virgie Richardson, LVN Elaine Smith, SAD Martha Marx, and Paul Legendre (volunteer) went to the annual senior citizen luncheon at the Holiday Inn in Houston sponsored by the UpLift Mission in Houston. Everyone enjoyed the meal and speech on senior citizens, "God Needs and Wants You." "Happy Birthday" celebrant for the month of May was Ella Bacica.

The Birthday Party, which was held May 31, included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to the taped Czech choir of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Bobby Jones. The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages. The St. Michael's Altar Society provided the cakes. Ben Bacica also brought a cake. Lydia Hortmon and Frances Muzny served coffee, punch, cake and ice cream to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

CESAT Annual Meeting Held May 25, 1985 The SPJST Headquarters in Temple was the site of the 1985 annual meeting of CESAT (Czech Ex - Students of Texas) Saturday, May 25, 1985.

In opening the meeting President Marvin Marek introduced Mr. Leonard Mikeska, SPJST Secretary/Treasurer, who welcomed the CESAT members and guests to the Temple headquarters of the SPJST organization.

Before the meeting got under way Otto Hanus, SPJST Museum curator, took all the members and guests on a one - hour tour of the museum, which contains articles, artifacts, various home and farm tools and equipment, musical instruments, etc. pertaining to all phases of domestic life in the Czech communities of by - gone years.

Everyone was amazed at the tremendous variety in the museum collections and the number of rooms, including an extensive library, making up the museum. All CESAT members and guests expressed their appreciation to Mr. Hanus for the opportunity to see this most interesting collection of Czech memorabilia.

In his report to the members President Marek indicated that considerable progress is being made in the repayment of student loans with three loans being repaid in full in 1984.

There are now 15 active student loans, including three new loans totalling $3,500 issued last year. Scholarships of $150 each were awarded in April to two students at Flatonia High School, namely, Ronald James Kallus and Janice Koncuba.

Plans for the Music Symposium to be held at the Brazos Center in Bryan/College Station in November 1986 are being developed by Dr. Clinton Machann.

Calvin Chervenka, chairman of the Higher Education Committee, reported on a meeting of representatives of the University of Texas (Austin) and several Czech leaders regarding the status of Czech language education and study programs in Texas. This meeting which was called together by CESAT President Marek was held at SPJST Temple Headquarters Tuesday, May 7, 1985, and was hosted by SPJST SL President Howard Leshikar.

Attending this May 7 meeting besides Mr. Marek, Mr. Chervenka and SPJST SL President Howard Leshikar were Dr. Robert D. King, Dean of the College of Humanities, Dr. Michael Katz, chairman of the Dept. of Slavic Languages, Julius Dubcak, representing the RVOS and WFLA, and Joe Mendenhall, representing the University of Texas Czech Club. Mr. Marek, in calling this meeting, expressed the concern of the Czech - American community in regard to the future of the Czech language program at UT (Austin) in view of proposed legislative budget cuts and the departure of Dr. Frantisek Galan, professor of Czech at the end of the current semester.

Dr. King responded by saying that UT (Austin) has no intention of abolishing the Dept. of Slavic Languages, in fact, they are hoping to increase activities in this area by expanding it with a Soviet and East European Studies Program which many universities now have. Such a program would be eligible for Federal funding under the -Soviet and East European Research and Training Act

of 1984. UT - Austin's first application for Federal funding had been turned down but they plan to apply again in the next funding period.

Diversification of the courses offered by the Slavic Dept. and increases in enrollment, no , doubt would increase the chances for approval of this second application.

Dr. King who has been at UT (Austin) for 20 years indicated that years ago the number of students studying Czech were in the majority, compared with the number studying other Slavic languages such as Russian, Polish, Bulgarian, Serbo Croation and Albanian. However, in recent years the enrollment in Czech classes has been generally low and fluctuating. He said that the greatest assistance that CESAT and the Czech community could give at this time would be to encourage students to come to UT (Austin) to take Czech study courses. No matter what the university offers, and provides, there can be no real success in the Czech program if there are not enough students enrolled in the program.

Dr. Katz, charged with responsibility of building the Slavic Dept. reviewed some of the things that had been done and plans for accomplishing this goal of increasing the Czech student enrollment. These plans covered on a round - table discussion are quite extensive and if all are consumated, should result in a much stronger and more active Dept. of Slavic Languages.

One of the main points of the eighteen ideas brought out was that Dr. Frantisek Galan's decision to leave the university has left the Slavic Dept. without a doctoral instructor in Czech for the 1985/1986 school year. Until that position can be filled a doctoral candidate, Mr. Woody Smith will teach the Czech courses.

Also the Czech language correspondence courses in the UT Austin Extension Division are being strengthened with Mr. James W. Mendl, Jr. as instructor in this program.

Another point of importance is that the Slavic Dept. hopes to invite prospective students who will be high school juniors in 1985/1986 to visit the UT Austin Campus where they will be hosted by the University and the Czech Club. The Dept. is in need of the names and addresses of such prospective Czech students so that they can be invited.

Another idea proposed was to include some promotional orientation and training for prospective teachers of Czech who may have to stimulate, organize and develop first - time Czech courses in public schools, communities, lodges, etc.

As a result of this report by Calvin Chervenka, the members of CESAT approved the following motions: 1) Issue a grant of $500 to a qualified teacher of an accredited Czech language. course to attend the seminar conducted by the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute in Prague in July 1986.

2) Issue a grant to the UT Czech Club to promote Czech language study.

3) Issue resolutions of appreciation to various individuals and organizations for their continued support.

4) Establish a speaker's bureau to promote more interest in Czech studies among the young people.

5) Provide informational publicity at all Czech functions, such as Czech Fest, Czech Days, State Fair, etc. for the purpose of Czech study promotion.

6) Develop oral history project utilizing tape records of Czech senior citizens with their accounts of the early years in the old Czech communities.

7) Scholarships for proficiency in Czech are to be awarded in the amount of $200 each to 2 second year high school students during the 1985/1986 school year.

8) A $1,000 scholarship/grant is to be allocated each year from the Dr. Micek Scholarship Fund for a college student to pursue Czech language study.

At the close of the meeting Mrs. Jean Jacques representing the Czech Heritage Society showed samples of the official logo that will be used in all Czech activities and promotions during the 1986 Texas Sesqui Centennial.

Choral Group Rehearses Seaton

Dear Members and Friends: Here is a belated report on the spring picnic held Sunday, May 19, at Seaton Star Hall. The following spent the, afternoon visiting and enjoying a covered dish supper before departing, namely, Bob and Mary Vasicek, Della Psencik, Anne Krcha, Georgia Sodek, Albina Mikeska, Annie Jakubec, Mary Holick, Martha Klusacek, Henry and Helen Janacek, Frank and Lillian Mikulec, J.L. and La Verne Vanicek, Mathu and Elsie Cabla and Dorothy Pechal. We had hoped for a larger group to gather, but those who attended had a very enjoyable time.

Tuesday, May 28, the group met for the usual practice. Our accordionist, Henry Janacek, was busy combining wheat so we just sang without music.

We sang many of the old favorites and it sounded real good. Those present were Helen Janacek, Mary Holick, Albina Mikeska, Annie Jakubec, Della Psencik, Georgia Sodek, Anne Krcha, La Verne Vanicek, Mathu and Elsie Cabla and Dorothy Pechal.

At the meeting, following singing, La Verne Vanicek stated that Lillian Kosarek and husband, Bill, had sent regrets not coming to the picnic but were sending a "Hello" to everyone.

Thanks for the message and we are missing you at our rehearsals.

84, Dallas Softball Team Report Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The weekend of Saturday, May 11, we entered the Fort Worth Tournament and we played our first game at 9:15 a.m. against a very strong team,Neal Electric from Austin, Texas and we lost by a score of 6 to 0. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher allowing 10 hits, 3 walks and 1 strikeout. Hitters

were few as Don Lennox and Don Jarma had singles and Kerry Good and Danny Yates reached base via walks.

After the game we had a team picnic and we nearly finished our first sandwiches and it started to rain.

Needless to say, we were rained out and we returned the weekend of June 8 to replay and finish the tournament.

Our May 14 game was rained out.

Our next league game was played Tuesday night, May 21, and beat Charlie's by a score of 3 to 1 to remain undefeated in League Play. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 6 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts, a very good performance on the mound.

Hitters were Ben Downey with a single, Don Jarma with a walk and a stolen base, Tom Stites with a single and a walk, Danny Yates with a single, a sacrifice fly and a RBI, and Jim Zaller with a single. This was a very good game and against one of the top teams in our league.

Our records thus far stand: 5 wins and no losses to date.

Our next game was scheduled for Tuesday night, May 28:against Ernst and Whenny. Then Tuesday night, June 4, we were scheduled to play Curry Leasing at 8:10 p.m. and June 12 we are scheduled to play Adairs at 8:10 p.m. Come to Samuel Grand Diamond No. 2 and see the team play.

Circle, Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies'

Dear Members and Friends: It is hard to believe that school is out and another year has passed by. It seems as though it was only yesterday that children were busy enrolling in schools and busy, getting their school supplies together for the incoming year. Now each one is busy with plans.

Some will work, others are planning on going with parents on vacation, while others are making plans for summer camps and so on.

Our meeting opened with President Florence Greer, Vice President Dona Hubenak, Secretary Frances Grizzard and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek.

A motion was made by Clara Cohen that we open our meeting with a "Hat Show" before our business meeting.

The motion was seconded by Esta Belle Hubenak. Motion carried. Our judges were appointed by Florence Greer. They were Marie Prill, Betty Loyd and Evelyn Williams. After parading around the hall in front of the judges, a decision was made.

Bennie Hundle won the prettiest hat award, Helen Paprskar, the funniest hat and Dona Hubenak,the ugliest hat.

Florence Greer presented gifts to the winners.

Frances Grizzard read the minutes from the last meeting. They were approved as read. Lillie McMillen gave her Sunshine report. Florence Greer welcomed our guest, Imogene Reaves.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Hermina and Phyllis Cihacek‘', Mary Dunlap, Esta Belle Hubenak, Lydia Palachek, Corina Tesar, Sarah Wade, Evelyn Williams and Rosie Zalesak.

Joyce Tesar announced the coming events schedule for the next few months. She told about the plans for our 75th anniversary program, also she gave Bunny Tesar's report for "Kash for Kids." Over $1,500 was raised and donated.

Evelyn Spacek will donate the door prize for June.

SVPS Chapter 9 Fort Worth Meeting Dear Members: June 16th, there will be a meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association Chapter. It will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held at the Sokol Athletic Center, 6500 Boat Club Road.

There will be the usual order of business pertaining to our chapter.

Those members who would like to pay their assessment before the meeting or after the meeting may do so; the secretary will be there for your convenience.

There was a discussion brought up at the last meeting on how to get more members to attend the meetings and it was decided that there would be three drawings of $25 each of each meeting in the future to the local members only who attend the meetings, so all of you plan to attend and, who knows, you may be one of the lucky winners!

The meal after the meeting will be furnished by the chapter but the ladies are asked to please bring pastries.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Brother Rudy Chaloupka who passed away recently and I just heard today that Sister Lillie Matusevich passed away in a nursing home in San Antonio. She and her husband lived in Ft. Worth many years before he passed away and she went to the nursing home. Our sympathy is also extended to her family.

We want to thank Frankie Klinkovsky for substituting for Rosie Craft, our leader, who wasn't present at the meeting. We also want to wish Mr. Klinkovsky a "Happy Birthday."

We went swimming to Lions Pool and then to Polar Bear Ashburns for some ice cream for our monthly social June 9th.

30 Taiton Youth Club News Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting June 2, 1985 at the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar. The pledge was led by Keith Kresta and Marcy Dorotik recited a prayer.

Poems were read by Marcy and Jean Dorotik, Lenice Kaspar and Michelle Srubar.

Contest winners in the following ages were: (6-9) - Lenice Kaspar, 1st (10-12) - None (13-17) - Michelle Srubar, 1st; Marcy Dorotik, 2nd; Jean Dorotik, 3rd We discussed camp and all members going to camp are to meet at the hall at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 16th.

We honored three graduates with gifts from Taiton; they were Anthony and Allan Kresta and Rudy Laitkep.

The meeting was adjourned and we played bingo and refreshments were served.

39, Bryan YC Enjoys Summer Outing Lodge

Dear Members, Our youth club went to Schlitterbaum in New Braunfels for our spring trip Saturday, May 25, 1985. We left early in the morning and returned around 10 p.m. I really had a big time. We swam, rode paddle boats, went down slides, and went rafting on tubes. It was really a fun - day. Also several adults attended the outing. On our way home we stopped for a pizza supper.

Orsag Selected For Honors' Program In Washington Shay Orsag of Lodge 185 in New Braunfels has been selected as one of 20 deaf students in the United States to attend the Gallaudet Young Scholars Program this summer in Washington.

D.C. This program for gifted and talented deaf youth age 15 to 17 is a 4 week solar studies program beginning July 1 sponsored by Gallaudet College.

The participants of the program will be using computers, scientific instruments, and the laboratories of the Gallaudet Department of Physics to study the sun.

Shay Orsag is the daughter of Charles and Janet Orsag. She is a freshman at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. She was selected for the Gallaudet Young Scholars Program on the basis of standardized test scores, teacher recommendation and academic achievement.

Parents Honored On Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Edwin A. Baron of Port Wentworth, Georgia, recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at a seated dinner for family and friends at the Quality Inn, Savannah. Hosts for the occasion were the couple's two children, Mrs. Margaret B. Taylor and Edwin J. Baron, and Mrs. Anne Baron and Kenneth G. Taylor, all of Atlanta.

Mrs. Baron is the former Lydia Suchma of Guy, Texas. They were united in marriage at th,.- Church of the Annunciation in Houston May 12, 1920. Mr. Baron left Rosenberg in December 1918 to take a position with the Savannah Sugar Refining Corporation. He retired in 1962 after 44 years with the company.

Also attending the dinner were granddaughters, Miss Leslie Baron of Atlanta and Mrs. Virginia T. Beard of

Greenville, South Carolina, Mr. Beard and their two daughters, and grandson, David E. Taylor of Washington, D.C. Unable to attend were grandson, K. Gordon Taylor, Jr., Mrs. Taylor and their two children who reside in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The Rev. Francis J. Nelson and Deacon Ray Pierce of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church gave the opening prayers.

Both Lydia and Edwin are members of SPJST Lodge No. 111 in Sugarland having joined in 1917. Although they have been away from Texas for many years, they have made numerous visits to their native state and still have relatives living in Rosenberg, Needville, Waco and Big Spring. They also look forward to receiving the Vestnik each week.

Darlene Ermis Neiser graduated cum laude (with honors) May 10 from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor at Belton.

She was elected to Alpha Chi, a national honor scholarship society, in March. She also received an honor award for academic excellence as the RN student with the highest grade point average in nursing.

Mrs. Neiser is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Ermis of Weimar and the wife of William Neiser, formerly of Weimar. She is employed at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Hospital in Temple.

Darlene is a member of Lodge No. 87, Temple. She is Brother and Sister Jerry Valchar's niece and great granddaughter of SPJST Charter Members Joe and Terezie Valchar.

June 29 Wedding Mr. and Mrs. Johnny C. Whearley and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley E. Vrla are happy to announce the engagement of their children, Bobie Jean Curry and John Edward Vrla. Bobie is a 1985 graduate of Skyline High School in Dallas and is starting Texas Medical College in August. John is a 1981

graduate of Hillcrest High School in Dallas and has attended Richland College and Texas A&M. The wedding will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church June 29, 1985. Bobie and John are members of Lodge No. 130, Dallas where John is also a sales representative.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Odstricil of Caldwell; a son, Samuel Ray Odstricil of EdinburgL three daughters, Mrs. Willie Mae Groce of Caldwell, Mrs. Emma Lee Kubin of Bryan and Mrs. Barbara Jean Rahnert

of Houston; a brother, Rudolph Odstricil of Caldwell; 10 grandchildren rnd 5 great - grandchildren.

Services were, held at 1:30 p.m.

Sunday, January 20, at the Cooks Point Brethren Church with the Reverends Norman Haisler and Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in the Caldwell Masonic Cemetery.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother HENRY M. HAISLER, who died April 1, 1985 in Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond, Texas at the age of 94.

Brother Haisler was born May 10, 1890 in Burleson County, the son of the late Frank and Frances Marek Haisler. A lifetime resident of Burleson County, he was a farmer and farmed in the Providence community.

He had been living in Rosenberg for the past several years with his daughter, Lillie Haisler.

He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, the Mutual Aid Society of the Unity of the Brethren and the SPJST Lodge No. 17.

He was married to Mary Mynar November 14, 1916. She preceded him in death February 18, 1978.

Survivors include three sons, Anton Haisler and Hubert Haisler of Caldwell, Henry Haisler of Bastrop; two daughters, Lillie Haisler of Rosenberg and Rosalie Rek of Rockdale; nine grandchildren and 19 great - grandchildren.

One daughter, Martha Ginzel, preceded him in death in 1979. Also preceding him in death were five brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, April 3, in the Caldwell Brethren Church with Rev. Albert Michalik and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons Harold Haisler, Steve H. Haisler, Done! H. Ginzel, Al William Ginzel, Gene Rek and Donald Haisler.
