Sister Julia Severa Outlives Her Policy Sister Julia Severa attained the age of 96, May 15, 1983 and is the 74th person in the history in the SPJST to outlive her SPJST life insurance policy. Sister Severa received a check for the face amount of her certificate together with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Julia Severa was born in the Steep Hollow Community, in Brazos County, May 15, 1887. Her parents were Joseph and Rosa Holik. Some years later the family moved to a farm ,y. Josep in the Fountain passed away when Julia was a young girl.

November 7, 1908, she was married to Fritz Severa, in Bryan, Texas. The couple made their home on a small farm in the Rye Community, in Brazos County. Their union was blessed with four children. Her husband passed away March 14, 1977. Sister Severa presently resides on the same farm with her son, Joe. Her surviving children are Joe Severa of Bryan, Emily Janosek and Victoria Brandt of Corpus Christi, and Albina Yeager of College Station, Texas.

All of her children, grandchildren, and great - grandchildren gathered to celebrate the occasion with her.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge and the members of SPJST Lodge No. 39, Bryan extend congratulations and best wishes to Sister Severa and wish her well.

Bartek Is Valedictorian Kevin Bartek Curry was named valedictorian of the Temple High School 1985 graduating class; he earned a 102.5652 grade average during his four years of high school.

Kevin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Curry of Temple and the late James Dennis Bartek.

His accomplishments include 1984 Boys State Delegate, 1984 Central Texas Youth Leadership Council Award, and the 1983 Leadership in Free Enterprise Award from the Temple Rotary Club. He was on the school's Brainstorm team in 1984 - 85.

Today, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island remain central to America's self - image. Liberty has no peer as a symbol of the American dream. Ellis Island is a timeless reminder of the human courage and energy that turn dreams into reality These are powerful presences out of our common past, impossible to forget, but all too easily taken for granted.

The Liberty Centennial Campaign is a reminder to us that what we have and value should never be taken for granted. It is also a once - in - a lifetime opportunity to renew our faith in our country and pride of our own individual family heritages.

The reward for this accomplishment will outlive us. We will have made a major step towards ensuring that the generations which follow us have the same opportunity of sharing in the pride of freedom and cultural diversity which is the unique characteristic of being American. *** Immigration. The Statue of Liberty did not become closely identified with the great flow of immigrants who landed on nearby Ellis Island until after the turn of the century. In 1903, a bronze plaque carrying the sonnet "The New Colossus," composed in 1883 by Emma Lazarus, was affixed to the statue. It strengthened the tie between the statue and immigration in the following lines by the young poetess: Give me your tired, your poor Your huddled masses yearning breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these the homeless, tempest - tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door. ***

Sefcik Editor Box 85 West, Texas 76691 Dear Mr. Sefcik: Since this month marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Rural Electrification Administration, the House of Representatives devoted a block of time on Tuesday, May 7, for commemoration of this program that literally brought rural America out of the "Dark Ages." As you may know, the first REA electric cooperative in the nation began operating in Bartlett, we certainly have reason to be proud. I thought you might be interested in a copy of the Floor speech I made honoring the REA and the people who have made it the fine program that it is today.

House of Representatives Mr. Leath of Texas. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to commemorate the Rural Electrification Administration -- a program that has helped countless rural Americans acquire something that - we all take for granted -electricity. You know, it's hard to mention the REA without thinking of the man who did so much for that program, the man who represented for 42 years the district I now represent -Mr. Bob Poage. I talked with Congressman Poage a couple of weeks ago when I was down in the district, and we discussed the problems of rural development that existed 50 years ago.

"The first thing you had to develop," Mr. Poage said to me, "was the roads.

Then you had to have electricity and then water."

But Congressinan Poage wasn't one to just sit around and talk about how things should be. From the time he got to Washington Mr. Poage worked tirelessly to ensure adequate funding for the REA. He authored the bill expanding the program to include loans for telephone service, as well as the bill establishing a loan and grant program for rural water and sewer systems. I doubt w,e can fully appreciate what rural America would be like today without the contributions of Congressman Poage.

And the first step in the process was the creation of the REA. I'm proud to stand here today and tell you that the first REA cooperative in the Nation to begin producing electricity is located in Bartlett, Texas, which it is my privilege to represent. I talked just last week with Mr. Horace Keith who lives down in Bartlett. Mr. Keith not only worked to help string the original power lines, but served for almost 30 years as manager of the cooperative.

He and his wife Marie remembered well what it was like in those days before they had electricity, or telephones, or even roads to speak of.

They remembered coal oil lamps, and wood stoves, and how Mrs. Keith washed the clothes for this family of eight children by hand, using a washboard and tub.

They spoke of how the REA program had not just benefited rural areas, but the entire nation's economy as well. "Just think," they said to me, "of the many washing machines, and lamps, and other electric appliances we all bought." And this was a time, let us not forget, when one - quarter of the American people lived in rural areas.

So today, Mr. Speaker, we salute these people who banded together and gave freely of their time, and energy, and know - how; these people who worked tirelessly to see the completion of their dream -- a dream of electric service for all. "The most beautiful sight," Mrs. Keith said to me, "was the sight of the smallest shack, miles away from any neighbors, with that electric line now running to it. We didn't want to leave out anyone just because they were far away," she said, "and we didn't."

These people, ladies and gentlemen, are the people who have made America the great Nation she is -- a nation where neighbors are brothers, a nation where all work for the good of the community, a nation where no one is left out. I'm reminded of a tree; because as you know trees need strong roots in order to flourish -- in order for the trunk to grow tall; in order for the tree to bear fruit. Without strong roots, that tree withers. Rural America is today, and always has been, the strong roots of our Nation, and may we never forget that America's success is built on that strength. ***

From The President's Office Dear Members On Liberty Island in New York Harbor stands one of the world's largest statues. Its real name is Liberty Enlightening the World. However, most of us know her as the Statue of Liberty.

What does this robed lady who holds her torch so high mean to us?

Whether or not we have had the opportunity to climb the spiral stairway inside her to look out the windows on her crown or to view the night lights which make the torch look as if it is really burning. I feel we can all agree that this Grand Old Lady is the impressive and inspiring tribute to freedom that her designer meant her to be. She was and is the shining light of hope that had enabled freedom loving people to risk all to immigrate to America.

Right now, we in the SPJST, have the opportunity to show how we feel about freedom, and justice in America.

We can lend a hand to help restore this symbol of our freedom. For the first time since the French government gave the statue to the American people, the American people are being asked to help refurbish this decaying monument. The project may cost as much as $230 million. However, millions of Americans and people from all over the world have joined in the effort to save the Statue.

The Supreme Lodge decided to join this effort, also. As you, may already know, the National Fraternal Congress Board of Directors adopted a motion designating the restoration of the Statue a project of the National Fraternal Benefit System. Some of these questions and answers we feel would be helpful to the general membership, so from time - to - time we will print some of these questions in the Vestnik so we all can gain some knowledge from them.

Let's Talk Insurance Q. What is an individual retirement arrangement?

A. A savings plan (IRA) that lets an individual set aside money for their retirement. Payments to the plan are tax deductible and earnings of the plan are not taxed until distributed to the individual.

Q. Who is eligible?

A. Any individual may start and make payments town IRA if they have compensation that must be included in their taxable income for the year. An individual can have an IRA even though they are currently a participant in any other retirement plan, including a Keogh plan for the self - employed.

Q. What is compensation that would qualify an individual for an IRA? A. Generally, compensation is amounts earned, including wages, salaries, tips, professional fees, bonuses, amounts received for providing personal services, net self employment income (a loss from self employment cannot be used to adjust other income) and jury fees. For tax years beginning in 1985, all taxable alimony received by a divorced spouse under a decree of divorce or separate maintenance will be compensation.

This does not include amounts received as child support.

Q. What is not compensation for IRA purpose?

A. Earnings and profits from property such as rental income and profit from sale of property, interest income, dividend income, pension or annuity income, deferred compensation, foreign earned income and other amounts that are excluded from income such as disability payments.

Q. How much can an individual pay into their IRA per year?

A. Payments to an IRA can only equal the amount of your compensation that must be included in your gross income for the year or $2,000 whichever is less. Even though you may have more than one IRA plan in effect, the limit applies to the total of the payments made to that person's IRAs for the year.

Fraternal And Communications Mid-Year Conference Draws 80 To Pittsburgh The integration of fraternal and marketing programs, the NFCA Centennial celebration and project evaluation and research were topics discussed at a three - day Mid - Year Conference meeting of the

Communications and Fraternal sections of the National Congress of America. Some 80 fraternalists attended the meeting held March 16th 18th at the Pittsburgh Hilton.

"Evaluation is the study of what was done so that it can be done better" said Marge Lambrecht, director of Communications, United Way of the Quad Cities. Her presentation focused on test marketing, pretesting and other research methods in evaluating the effectiveness of both fraternal and communications projects. "With evaluation:' according to Lambrecht, "an organization lives in a vacuum where there is no sending or receiving of information."

Robert Mickelson, Assistant Vice President, Communications Services of the Aid Association for Lutherans, Chairman, NFCA Centennial Committee, outlined plans for Washington, D.C. in 1986. The major focus of the Centennial will be a legislation reception, audio - visual show, song and several media events highlighting, the activities of fraternal benefit societies.

Michael Doherty, Vice President, Gateway Presentation People, outlined how affordable and necessary displays are in communicating an organization's message on a one - to one basis "in the field." Displays are being used more and more by a variety of organizations. Displays should be colorful and eye - catching. "Don't try to tell your whole story on a display.

Think of it as a billboard," he told the gathering.

The conference concluded with a presentation on fraternal marketing integration by three officials from Lutheran Brotherhood: Pamela Desnick, CLU, Kent Eklund, Ph.D. and Cathy Holmberg.

Desnick, Assistant Vice President, Communications, outlined the changing insurance market from a product - driven environment to a market - driven environment.

"Insurance changes frequently to meet the needs and demands of the consumer," she said. "Gone are the days of whole life and low interest.

The consumer now creates the plans.

These are interest sensitive and flexible products."

Holmberg, Assistant Vice President of Lutheran Brotherhood's Fraternal Division described the state of volunteerism in America. According to her, volunteerism is growing. She presented statistics from the Gallup Poll showing that the primary volunteer - oriented group is comprised of those between the ages of 25 and 50, which is also the primary insurance buying market.

Dr. Eklund, Vice President of the Fraternal Division, then led the conference participants in a problem solving exercise on how to enable fraternal and marketing to work together. Solutions ranged from having fraternal benefits more highly visible in advertising, to making fraternal benefits a more important part at the point of sales. The involvement of the CEO is also very critical in assuring that fraternal shares in the marketing programs of fraternal benefit societies.

Conference Coordinators were Gloria Bergh of Modern Woodmen of America and Bernard Gebala of Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST). Conference Registrar was Linda Missana of the North American Benefit Association.

The On - site Committee included Frederick Petro of the Greek Catholic Union and Jonni Dempsey of National Fraternal Congress,of America.

The 1984 - 1985 Communications Section Officers include President Petro, Vice President Bergh and Secretary/ Treasurer Patricia Pfiefer of the North American Benefit Association. Current Fraternal Section Officers are President Lionel J. Frappier of Union Saint - Jean Baptiste, Vice President Bernard Gebala and Secretary/Treasurer Linda Missana.

Temple VA Hospital Visit Most Reverend Joseph T. Dimino, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of New York City, visited Father Harry Bilski, the Catholic VA Chaplain, and the patients and personnel of the Olin E. Teague Veterans' Center in Temple. Bishop Dimino is an assistant to Archbishop Joseph T. Ryan, the new Military Vicar. The Military Ordinariate is a world - wide diocese which includes all Catholic, VA, and Military Chaplains and Catholic military families. This amounts to over two million people all over the world.

Bishop Dimino, Father Bilski, and area priests were treated to a luncheon at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Temple. The luncheon was prepared and sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Council #3444.

In commenting on Bishop Dimino's visit, Father Bilski made the following remarks, "This is history because this is the first time ever that anyone from the Military Ordinariate's office in New York City has visited our VA Center. I feel personally privileged and honored with Bishop Dimino's one day visit. His visit was spiritually inspiring and encouraging to me and everyone whom the Bishop met. Brother Haisler Receives DHR Promotion

Jerry Haisler, of Seaton Star Hall Lodge No 47, has been named Regional Director of Services to the Aged and Disabled with the Texas Department of Human Resources (DHR) in Austin. In his new position,

Haisler directs 218 staff in the 30 county Central Texas area and is responsible for a 13.1 million dollar budget.

He began his career with DHR in 1974 as an intake worker with the child protective services division in the Belton area. He has also served in that division as a supervisor and later as program director in the Austin regional headquarters. Along with Harolyn Moreau, DHR's Regional Volunteer Specialist, Haisler has been involved with numerous SPJST child abuse and neglect projects.

Brother Haisler has been involved with SPJST ever since he was a member of an SPJST Youth Club. His

band, Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5, often perform at SPJST lodges throughout Central Texas. Haisler's parents, Robert (Bob) and Mary Haisler, are also lifelong members of Lodge No. 47.

Brother Haisler resides at 509 Filly, Temple,with his wife, Helen, and sons, Mark, age 11, and Jason, age 4.

Recently Mr. Haisler received his Master of Science in Social Work degree from the University of Texas in Austin.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Honors Members Dear Readers: Our Lodge 17 held its regular monthly meeting with all officers present.

Diane Jaster, chairperson of the Burleson County Child Welfare Board, was presented and she showed some slides on child abuse and talked to us about this problem and what is being done to help these children.

We also presented four of our 50 year members. President Vavra presented them with pins sent from the Supreme Lodge. Those members were Theodore Dusek, Sr, Lydia Skrabanek, Ella and John Orsag.

We received a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar thanking us for participating in the charitable activity to raise money for aid to abused children.

We also had a letter about the proposed 42 and straight domino contests; so far they sound great.

It was decided that our barbecue this year will be a fall affair and will probably be a Saturday activity.

Deanville Gun Club wants to use our grounds for a turkey shoot; this was tabled until our next meeting so that we can find out more about it before deciding whether or not to let them use it.

The youth club furnished a beautiful cake in honor of our 50 year members, which was enjoyed by all following our meeting.

The next meeting will be at 2 p.m.

Lodge 28, East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: Since Father's Day is June 16th, there will be a short observance of Father's Day in our June meeting, Sunday the 2nd. The meeting will convene at 2 p.m., in the lodge hall.

Some additional items will be on the agenda, along with the'regular reports.

The "Gathering" for the (so called) "svacina" for some, for others a lunch and "Kaffeeklatsch" will begin at the buffet table after the meeting.

The May 5th meeting was a standard meeting that lasted under an hour.

Besides the usual reports, additional reports were given on premium refund checks (a short review), direct billing (also a short review) and our standing, for the year of 1984, (moneywise) as to the number of delegates we will have in 1988. All reports were accepted as given. The direct billing question was recalled and passed again. It was decided not to recall this question again since it has passed twice with 100 percent of those present voting for it.

The meeting adjourned for the drawings and "Kaffeeklatsch.'

The regular door prize was won by Sister Nezval who, in turn, gave it to the special kitchen fund. The special door prize from the lodge for Mother's Day vs as won by Sister

Sruhar. There were too many prizes donated by the sisters to name all of the winners but all sisters who were Mothers received at least one prize.

There were three prizes each donated

by Sisters Julie Janik and Ann Luquette. There were two prizes each donated by Sisters Frances Haverda, Elsie Brdecka and Lil Nezval.

The buffet table was again filled by food donated by Sisters Janik, Haverda, Kortis, Srubar, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval. The table would have looked bare with that one platter of sandwiches donated by the lodge, if not for them. Thanks again, sisters.

On another note, this writer wishes to call attention to an item of interest to all sales representatives and that being the new "Universal Life Basics" course. This is not to encourage or discourage one to or from taking this course but just to state facts. The reason for the charge for the course is so that those who wish to take it will and those who will not will not order it. The monetary charge (which is the actual cost to the SL) is to encourage those ordering it to finish and send in the answer sheet. Enough said!

Lodge 35, Elk Meets Dear Members: Our May meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flagbearer Dawn Pavelka.

Then the president asked the members to stand in a moment of silence for our departed Brother Willie Pavelka.

Sister Rosemary Banik read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read.

Youth Leader Louise Burney gave her report; she said the youth club will be going to Six Flags, June 5th. Then she talked about YAD and told who was running for king and queen, namely, King -- Richard Lee Burney, Queen -- Tracy Breitkreutz. Duke is Waylon Callaway and Jesika Tierce is duchess.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Gene Edward Pavelka and Waylon Callaway.

The committee chairpersons gave their reports, namely: Kitchen -- Inez Breitkreutz, Entertainment -- James Pavelka and Henry Breitkreutz -refreshments.

Freddie Kubitza put some more plugs in the hall. He donated the labor and material. Thanks, Freddie!

New members are David Earl Tierce and Ernest Clarence Anz. Brother Albert Banik had surgery and it was really good to see him at the meeting.

Door prizes were won by Nathaniel Tierce, youth and Helen Dulock, adult.

After the meeting a delicious ham dinner was served and everyone enjoyed it. Our next meeting will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9th.

Lodge 51, Ellinger Approves Picnic Dear Members: "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER." It may be a little late to report the outcome of our quarterly meeting in March, but as the saying goes: it is better if it is a little late than not reporting at all.

GOOD NEWS! We'll have our bi annual picnic this year Sunday, September 15, at the Ellinger C of C Recreation Hall. Registration will, begin at approximately 10 a.m., and a "Happy Hour" from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. with FREE refreshments, a barbecued chicken dinner will begin at 12:30 p.m. Of course, all the trimmings will go along with the chicken.

There will not be any charge for the members of this lodge, however, family members who are not members of this lodge and reside in the same home will be charged a $2 donation.

81, Needville Makes Donations

Dear Members: Our May 14 meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek at 7 p.m. Benita Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present and all reports were accepted as given.

Mary Werner read a thank you card from the Charlie Franek family.

It was decided to donate $25 to the Cancer Fund, $50 to the S.P.J.S.T Rest Home No. II in Needville, $50 to the Needville Fire Dept., and $25 to the Richmond State School.

Our Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan spent a few days in the hospital, but is out and doing well.

There were two new policies issued to Kevin Kusy and Kenneth Wayne Kusy.

Mr. Herbert Nowotny reported that Lodge No. 88 donated $1,000 to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home.

Our two door prize winners were Mary Matcek and Vlasta Hurta.

Lodge 87 Donates To Charity Temple

Dear Readers: Lodge 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, May 10 at 7 p.m. with Vice President Frank Machalek presiding.

The meeting was called to order; Jerry Valchar, flagbearer, led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased members Joe Plsek , Jerry Joe Pechal and Clinton L. Marek. May they rest in eternal peace.

New members Robert Weaver and Morgan W. Pavelka were accepted into our lodge. Welcome to Brother Weaver and Morgan Pavelka.

Mary Leshikar transferred into Lodge 47 and Randy Shenkir into Lodge 24.

Members voted to donate $50 to the Crime Stoppers program.

SL President Howard Leshikar was special guest for the evening, he spoke to the lodge on various topics and conducted a question - and - answer session for lodge members.

A motion was made and seconded for Mary Zatopek to take over, the office of treasurer for the remainder of the 1985 calendar year.

The first annual domino tournament was discussed and will be continued at the June meeting.

Fifty - year member Betty Havlik was present. Dorothy Chervenka presented Betty with a corsage in behalf of the officers and lodge members.

Other guests for the evening were Millie Schiller, Mary Reznicek and Agnes Zatopek.

Sophie Palmquist, our very dear member, was honored by the Texas Extension Homemaker's Club for being a member for 50 years. She will receive a framed certificate and has been a very active member for all of these years. Congratulations, Sophie!

Our special get well wishes are extended to our President Vlasta Jez who underwent surgery recently. We hope you will be able to be with us at the June meeting.

We have to compliment the men of Lodge 87 who prepared the excellent and delicious meal for our May meeting; the food was enjoyed by all; our special thanks to them.

The June meeting will be Friday evening, June 14, at 7 p.m.

—SPJST'Homecoming With A Splash' Planned At Lodge 88

Sunday, June 2 the members' annual homecoming at Lodge 88 is scheduled. Again this year Homecoming and Splash Day are combined. A barbecue beef dinner with all the trimmings will be served free to all Lodge 88 members from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. only. After that time dinners will be available for $4 and mini - plates for $2.50. Guests can purchase dinners all through the day for the above prices. Members, please show our membership cards to Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt in her booth for your dinner tickets before you get in the food line. The dinner will again be served under the canopy in the picnic area. It should be a fun day under the shade trees.

Bobby Jones and his country/western band will play in the gazebo from noon until 4 p.m. You can dance out there or just sit and listen, whatever is your pleasure.

Bingo will be played in the ballroom starting at 2 p.m. At 5 p.m., in the Chandelier Ballroom, Lee Roy Matocha takes the center stage for your dancing enjoyment. There will be no charge for this dance.

Most of the lodge committees have planned projects for all day and will have their booths outside in the picnic area and around the pool.

The Youth Club is featuring a bathing beauty contest and a weight lifting contest so get ready for beauty and brawn.

I'm sure President Pearl Hanka and her Birthday Sisters will appreciate any pastry donations for their pastry booth.

Sister Effie Hruska passed away May 11 and her services were held in Christ The King Catholic Church, Tuesday, May 14, where she had been a charter member. Both Sister Hruska and her late husband, Ed, were very active members at the lodge on Robbie Street. In fact, they were one of many who furnished the money to make the payment to secure the property on

Beall Street. Our sympathy goes to her daughter Doris and son - in - law Louis Darilek; her sisters, Olga Zarr and and her Hubenak Sophie grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Saturday, May 4 President 'Jerry Ermis welcomed some distinguished out - of - town guests to our lodge. Jim Wolfe, National Secretary of Western Fraternal Life of Cedar Rapids, Iowa with his wife, Stan and Mildred Patak of Dallas, and Angelo and Stazie Attas of the American - Czech Culture Society of Dallas who had attended a meeting in Houston of WFLA' and dropped by the lodge to say "hello."

President Ermis entertained them in the Blue Room, our private club.

Sister Adella Kite is back at Methodist Hospital for several days.

She had the surgery on the other side of her neck and had some complications so she will be there a few more days than was expected.

Lodge 133, San Antonio Holds Meeting The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 133 was held May 19 at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers Street.

The meeting was called to order by President Anthony Trilicek and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also remembering our departed loved ones with a moment of silence.

The minutes of the last meeting were read. The treasurer's report was given.

Roll call of officers revealed that all were present.

Reports were given by the various chairmen: Social committee Committee Mary Popp, Entertainment Committee - Alma Trilicek, Anniversary Chairman Marcella Kleprlik.

On the sick list it was reported that Brother and Sister Kostelnik were feeling much better after some illness; the members were also very much concerned about Sister Martha Harbort who was not feeling too well and, then while being out of her home for a short while, the house was robbed. We all wish her well.

arrived from Basel, Switzerland Sunday, May 12th. Marie and her husband, Paul, and daughter, Paula, who will arrive in the near future, are becoming permanent residents. They became Lodge No. 88 members several years ago when they were visiting and started citizenship, procedures.

Welcome to the good old USA! Several Lodge 88 members started the summer vacation season with a two - week camping trip to far West Texas. Doris and Henry Knapick, Judy and John Sindel, Bessie and Jerry Kolacny, Norma and Bill Petrzelka, and Lodge 81 members Frances and Jerry Kubala visited Big Bend National Park, Fort Davis National Park, the McDonald Observatory, Judge Roy Bean's Museum at Langtry, plus every point of interest in between. Other than a hail storm which damaged all the campers and RVs and a bobcat that tried to tear up the Knapick's truck, they all reported a safe, peaceful trip.

They are' all resting for the next one.

Brother Jaroslav and Sister Marcella Kleprlik of Lodge 133 are enjoying refreshments after the meeting. Both of them have been very active in our lodge. Brother Jaroslav held various offices and also as sales representative and Sister Marcella was the youth leader. Lodge 133 owes these members a lot of gratitude for their hard work and devotion to their lodge.

Discussion was held 'on a subject that was previously discussed that is to have an outing or a party for all the members. It was agreed that we have a party July 11 at 1505 S. Gevers Street, beginning at 4 p.m. until? Also to give all the members a break where they don't have to bring any food or drinks, the meal and drinks will be completely catered. Further information will be published in the Vestnik on this project. To many of the members who have not been able to attend the regular meeting, which is on the third Sunday of each month we want to extend to you our personal invitation to come to the parties and enjoy the evening with our fraternal members.

Discussion was also held on the Domino Tournament. Further discussion will be held on this matter in the July meeting.

Wednesday, May 29, 1985—VESTNIK/7 "Happy Birthday" was sung by the members for Sister Jennifer Rohan and Lucille Dlugosh. The members enjoyed refreshments and a games party after the meeting.

For the past three months or so, the news media reminded the public that it has been 40 years since World War II ended. I know that everyone has a special memory of something that happened during the war years, whether you were in in service or a civilian. The memory most vivid in my mind is the landing on D - Day at Omaha; Normandy Beach landing; the English Channel being full of ships, and the planes overhead where it looked like a dark cloud. Next month June 6th will be 41 years since that happened. I understand that that day churches were full and prayers were offered by our people for success and the ending of the war. I hope that this can be repeated by most of our people come June 6 and offer their prayers for the many men who gave their supreme sacrifice.

President Bill Hutka thanked Helen Bland for taking the minutes during the last meeting for the absence of Pat Tomastik.

Communications were a thank you card from the Jimmy Hill family, and a letter from the Supreme Lodge on the scholarship for Brady Hutka, son of President Bill Hutka, who was quite proud for Brady and also praise to our lodge for the many donations being given from our Bingo Fund.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik had 20 members present in the youth club and her youth decided to donate $25 to James Liver Fund, DYC Frankie Klinkovsky spoke on District II YAD. Walter Jezek gave the kitchen report

in Othea jezek's absence who was in Las Vegas.

There was no bingo report because Larry Bland was also absent.

There were three new members accepted into our lodge.

Walter Jezek made a motion to donate $100 to the youth club to cover the meals for the "Kitchen Kombo" who performed at our anniversary dance.

We had a nice turnout for the anniversary dance and a good time was had by all present.

Lodge 183, Mid Cities Holds Monthly Meeting

It was voted to have the next meeting for second Monday, June 10th, at 6:30 p.m. with a covered dish luncheon before the meeting. This is an effort to get more members to come to meetings because so many members are going out - of - town on weekends.

Dear Members: The regular monthly muting was held at the lodge hail Monday, May 13, at 6 p.m. There was a covered dish social before the meeting. The meeting was well attended.

A moment of silence was observed for Sister Sophia Havran who passed away since our last meeting.

All reports were read and approved.

It was reported that Sandra Rejcek is graduating from high school this year and will be receiving a gift of $50 from the lodge. This was, voted in two years ago by the members in order to help young lodge members get -a start in life and perhaps encourage them to become better lodge members in the suture. The members wish to say congratulations to Sandra and wish her well in life. If there are any other members graduating from high school or college, please let one of the officers know or call Inez Greenlees so the lodge can mail them their gift from the lodge.

Several thin gs were discussed at the meeting; one is that the lodge is planning a Czechfest for Saturday, September 28, 1985. This will be an old time party with prices in the 1950s.

There will be games, a little Czech culture, with prizes for best costumes, just remembering the past, and telling our neighbors more about the SPJST and why the members are so proud to be members. You will hear more about it as time goes along.

A discussion about direct billing or group billing was he and it was decided to vote on the matter at the next meeting in June. If you members have anything to say you need to be at the next meeting to cast your vote.

grandson, Conner Hahn, was born April 24 to son Frankie and his wife, Janet Prochaska.

It always gives me great satisfaction to announce the accomplishments of our young people and the contribution they make to today's society.

In the Dallas Morning News May 2, Donna Rose (Steinman) Parker was featured as the Ft. Worth woman shaping the Chamber of Commerce image. As group vice president for the Ft. Worth Chamber of Commerce her duties include many facets that are being accomplished with dignity.

Also featured in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin April 27, our son's (Anthony "Tony" Alholrn) views on "Are juries becoming too generous?" were published for all lawyers in Illinois. The Illinois State Medical Society shared his views and has introduced a 12 - bill package in their General Assembly with the hope of revamping the compensation system in medical negligence cases and reduce frivolous suits.

Those of us who attended the Ennis, Texas Polka Festival recently had a little bit of Czechoslovakia - Texas style. The Festival Committee should feel elated for the success because it was one of the BEST. Our thanks to Libbie (Tupy) Wisnievvski and Georgia Tupy for their hospitality during the festival.

We express get - well wishes to Bill Renfro who is at St. Joseph's Hospital in Ft. Worth.

Information For District I Campers Dear District I Youth Members: Camp will be held from June 1st to June 5th at Camp Lone Star. Here is a partial list of the things you will need to bring: 3 sets of clean clothes 2 pairs of comfortable shoes (tennis shoes) 1 pair of jeans (for horseback riding) bed linens or a sleeping bag towels Toiletries (toothbrush, soap, etc.) swim suit costumes (circus, camoflauge and punk rock -- optional) The teens (12 and over) will camp out Sunday night. You will need the following costumes for our night parties: Nerd Night, Punk Rock Party and TV Theme. The TV Theme will be a favorite personality or a character from a TV program.

For our outdoor study, you will need a 3 - lb coffee can plus a 1 lb coffee can. If you have extras, please bring them. If you have a tube can such as Pringle pototo chips or Kool aid can plus an old pair of nylon stockings for our bug traps would be helpful in our outdoor study.

You will be busy with arts/craft. We will do a nature study.

Come with a cheerful attitude and a big smile. Be willing to do your best in all activities.

Dime Box Youth Club Holds Meeting The Dime Box Youth Club of Lodge No. 13 held its last monthly meeting Sunday, May 19, 1985. President Penny Spitzenberger called the meeting to order. Susan Spacek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The secretary's report was then given by Trudy Krenek because there was no secretary. The treasurer gave her report and it was accepted as read.

There was no old business. The new business was that we might be going to a Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Our youth leader will give us more information at the next meeting.

We also discussed that if you are planning to go to camp, and, if you belong to Dime Box Youth Club we will leave the hall at 8 a.m. June 1st. Be sure to be there on time. District I YAD will be held July 21 at Dime Box. Since this was our last meeting of this year, because we begin, again, in June we had election of officers. EDMUND SLOVACEK, age 67, of 804 W. Fawn, who passed away Friday morning, March 8, in Burleson County Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 10, in Phillips - Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Simmons, pastor of the First United Methodist Church

officiating. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Masonic Warren Lodge No. 56.

Serving as pallbearers were members of Caldwell Masonic Lodge, namely, Victor Barnett, T.E. Hackler, Floyd Goodson, Jake McMonush, Byron Kornegay, Joyce Speckman and Gene Barber.

Brother Slovacek was born March 25, 1917 in Burleson County, the son of the late Adolph Joe Slovacek Sr. and Aloisie Slovacek.

A lifetime resident of Burleson County, he attended the Caldwell schools. He was a veteran of WWII enlisting in the U.S. Army November 14, 1940. He served with the 143rd Infantry Co. "E". He served overseas in Central Europe and was taken prisoner of war in Germany for 2 years. He was decorated for services in Battles and Campaigns and was honorably discharged September 10, 1945 with the rank of Technical Sergeant.

He was Burleson County Tax assessor/collector for 22 years,retiring in 1982. He grew up in the Brethren Church and later joined the First United Methodist Church in Caldwell of which he was a member. He was active in the memberships of the Caldwell Masonic Warren Lodge No. 56 AF&AM, also the VFW Post No 4458, American Legion Post No 0451 and a member of Ben Hur Shrine Lodge of Austin. He was also a member of Copperas Hollow Country Club and served as Club Manager for several years.

He was married to Mable Brannon March 19, 1938 in Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Mable Slovacek of Caldwell; four daughters, Mrs. Douglas (Karen) Moore of Modesta, California, Mrs. Jack (Dorothy) Orsak of Pasadena, Texas, Mrs. Adrain (Jo Beth) Carlson of Caldwell and Mrs. Wesley (Jean) Biscamp of Waco; six grandchildren; one brother, Adolph Slovacek of Bryan and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Willie Mae Hawey.

Brother Syptak was born February 20, 1912 in Baylor County, Texas. He and Lelia Minter were married November 18, 1932 in Lawton, Oklahoma. He had served on the Seymour School Board and was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Ennis.

Survivors include his wife, Lelia Syptak; a daughter, Mary Ann Syptak of Austin; a son, Matthew of Austin and three grandchildren.

MRS. ANNIE TAPAL, who died Thursday, May 16, 1985 in Houston, Texas.

Sister Tapal was born June 3, 1896 in Czechoslovakia. She was a longtime resident of Fayetteville, Texas.

She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Charter member of DYD Club, member of SPJST Lodge No. 1, all of Fayetteville, Texas.

(The Tapal family moved to Fayetteville in the early twenties where Brother Tapal was editor of the Vestnik for many years.)

She was preceded in death by her husband, Josef Tapal and daughter, Vlasta Mary Gaither.

Survivors include a son, Joseph J. Tap al and wife, Miriam; grandchildren, Joseph J. Tapal Jr. and wife, Carol, Joseph R. Gaither and wife, Linda, Gale H. Gaither and wife, Mary; Ann Davis and husband, James; eight great - grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Sister Tapal's remains lay - in - state at 1 p.m. Monday, May 20 at St. John's Catholic Church in Fayetteville, where rosary was recited at 1:40 p.m. followed by the Mass at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Msgr. Ben Mazurkiewicz officiating. Interment was in Fayetteville City Cemetery.

Greener - Svacek Wedding Monsignor George Doskocil united Charlene Diane "Dinker" Svacek and Donald Greener in the sacrament of holy matrimony at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 18, 1985, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, Texas. Altar boys were James Nemec, nephew of the bridesand Jason Willberg, cousin of the groom.

As family and friends entered into the church,they were ushered by Marc and Sammy Wilde, cousins of the groom, and Mark Smith, friend of the groom .

Wedding music was sung by Barbara Stanislav and accompanied by Steve Stanislav, organist.

Charlene, wearing a designer original silk organza gown, pearled alencon lace trimmed the bodice, an off - shoulder scoop neckline, victorian sleeves, lace appliqued skirt with crystal pleated hemline, multi layered ruffled attached chapel train, was escorted down the aisle by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lee Svacek, Sr. of West. To complete her attire, she wore a wreath of flowers and attached was a chapel length veil.

She carried a silk cascade bouquet of white orchids, white roses, and miniature red sweetheart roses. Orchid baby's breath and white stephanotis added the finishing touch to the bouquet. For the traditional something old the bride carried the prayer book her mother carried in her wedding 37 years ago, for something new she carried a handkerchief which was given to her by her sister Linda; for something borrowed Charlene wore her mother's pearl earrings and for something blue she wore a blue garter.

Charlene's dad also placed a 1962 penny, the year the bride was bmn, in her shoe for luck.

Before she was given to Don, Charlene presented her mother with roses. and after the wedding Mass she gave her mother - in - law two roses.

Don, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter T. Greener of Fort Worth, wore a traditional charcoal grey tuxedo with pinstriped trousers. 'His boutonniere consisted of a red rosebud with baby's breath.

Witnesses were Susie and Randy Greener, sister and brother of the couple, who also served as their matron of honor and best man.

Other attendants were Janie Dujka, sister of the bride, Vernon Greener, Sr., brother of the groom, Lou Nan McCollum, friend of the bride, Harry Svacek, Jr., brother of the bride, Jean Greener, sister of the groom, Craig Green, friend of the groom, and Donna Glatter, cousin of the bride, Harold Ranly, friend of the groom.

Summer Ward, niece of the groomwas flower girl and Carl Pliscott, III, nephew of the bride, was ringbearer.

The ladies wore matching orchid floor length Qiana taffeta gowns fashioned with a basque bodice, high sheer victorian yoke, a bertha ruffle caped sleeves, and full skirts. They wore wreaths of spring flowers and baby's breath in their hair which were designed by the bride's sister, Luritha Nemec. They also carried bouquets of spring flowers.

The men were dressed in charcoal grey tuxedos.

Lilac taffeta gowns fashioned with natural waist, embroidered bodice, puff sleeves and wrapped A - line skirts were worn by Luritha Nemec and Linda Pliscott, sisters of the bride, and Kathryn Ward, sister of the groom, who welcomed the guests into the hall.

The bride's cake was made and decorated by Luritha. Linda made and decorated the groom's cake as a drum the groom is a drummer and manager of the Cen - Tex Polka Band. A joining heart cake which read "Donnie Loves Dinker" and "Dinker Loves Donnie" was also made by Linda.

Don and Charlene led their wedding march while Jodie Mikula's Orchestra of Ennis provided the dancing music.

Entertainment was provided by the Cen - Tex Polka Band ether. the Mikulas took intermission.

Following their honeymoon, the couple will live in Westphalia, Texas.

Don is a journeyman electrician employed by Nathan Alterman Electric Company in Austin.

Wash produce without soaking it to avoid leaching out nutrients. Then trim the produce only as necessary to remove the damaged parts. Also prepare vegetables close to serving time to minimize the exposure of cut surfaces to oxygen and light.

Steam produce or cook it in as small an amount of water , for as short a time as possible to minimize nutrient losses from water leaching and heat.

Cook only the vegetables you will use at one time, since reheating causes loss of vitamins.

Osteoporosis has been called "the silent epidemic" for good reason, says a TAMU Agricultural Extension Service nutritionist.

Osteoporosis -- a weakening of the bone structure -- is a condition that develops over time, says Marilyn Haggard. A woman may not know she is developing this condition until she develops a "dowager's hump" or experiences broken bones from even

minor falls in her later years, she explains.

The best prevention for osteoporosis is an adequate supply of calcium daily over the lifespan, states Haggard. Yet research studies show that most adult women are consuming less than the recommended two servings a day of dairy products.

Nutritionists are also concerned about the future of the growing number of teenage girls who drink carbonated beverages rather than milk with meals and snacks, she says.

No matter what your age, it's not too late to change your eating habits so you can get the calcium necessary for strong bones throughout life, Haggard says. She suggests adding more dairy products to your diet: Drink milk at meals and for snacks.

Eat cheese as a snack or add it to other foods like sandwiches.

Eat yogurt.

When you make creamed soups, use milk instead of water.

Serve calcium - rich desserts, such as ice cream, custard or pudding.

Add powdered milk to soups, casseroles, sauces and beverages like cocoa.

While increasing calcium intake is the key step in preventing osteoporosis, there are also some other things you can do, Haggard reports.

Regular exercise, getting enough Vitamin D, eating a nutritionally adequate diet and stopping smoking will also help keep your bones strong.

Heating Baby Food In Microwave Ovens Warnings about the safety of heating baby food and infant formulas in a microwave oven have led to some confusion and unnecessary concern, says. a TAMU Agricultural Extension Service nutrition specialist.

Parents see a precautionary statement on the labels of some baby food products and assume it applies to all baby food; says Dr. Alice Hunt.

Others have simply heard second or third hand that microwave cooking is bad for baby foods.

But parents can be assured that microwaves are safe to heat any food, including baby food, she says.

Microwaves simply supply the energy which causes the food molecules to vibrate and causes the food to become warm.

Hunt notes that the problem, if there is one, arises from the speed and uneveness with which microwaves heat food, causing splattering and hot spots.

Baby food products which cause the most concern are dense, high protein products like plain meats and poultry, high meat dinners, egg yolks and meat and poultry sticks, says the specialist.

These foods have a tendency to form a dried layer on their surface that can prevent steam from escaping during heating. When the film is disturbed, by takin g the food out of the oven or food manufacturers put a precautionary statement on the labels of their dense, high - protein foods, she remarks. But they don't put a warning label on plain and mixed vegetables or vegetable and meat combinations, since these products have a higher water content and heat more evenly.

Any baby food that is warmed in a microwave oven should be heated on a medium or low setting just to

lukewarm. Also stir the food frequently during microwaving to promote even heating and the dispersion of any steam pockets that might be forming, recommends the specialist.

Infant formula can also be safely heated in a microwave oven if certain precautions are followed, Hunt maintains.

First, heat the milk only to barely warm, not boiling. Remember that the container may remain cool, while the milk is too hot.

Microwave the bottle of milk without the top at a medium setting until warm, which is about one minute per six ounces from refrigerator temperature. Attach the nipple and cap and shake the bottle to redistribute the heat.

Most importantly, let the bottle stand a few minutes before testing the temperature, and always sprinkle several drops on your inner wrist before giving the bottle to the baby, she cautions.

College Station -- Soybean prices may be peaking soon at less than lucrative levels, so producers will want to bear that in mind as planting gets under way.

We will likely see prices in the $5.80 to $6 per bushel range for a short while and then the tendency will be for them to move downward, says Johnny Feagan, economist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The TAMU System.

If production costs run near the present soybean price, the loan price of $5.02 per bushel will be of little help in reducing a producer's risk, Feagan points out. So he urges producers to be discreet when planting their 1985 crop.

Texas farmers have indicated they will plant 8 percent less than the 450,000 acres of soybeans planted last year. Nationwide, soybean planting intentions stand at about 64.4 million acres, down 5 percent from last year.

Weather will be a determining factor as to how many acres of beans are actually planted, says Feagan. Also, the moisture situation after the wheat harvest will determine how much second cropping there will be in southern states.

Overall, Feagan expects lower plantings than currently estimated due to poor price prospects that are resulting from large supplies.

World oilseed production currently is up 12 percent from last year. With China, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil all increasing oilseed production, U.S. exports of soybean meal dropped 22 percent during the past year. Although soybean oil prices have been somewhat higher due to reduced oil stocks, competitive oils have kept the pressure on the market.

You remember that in your study of English, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are 7 types of pronouns.

I. Personal: jd, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my and vy.

2. Possessive: mfij, tvuj, jeho, jeji, nag, vas, etc.

3. Demonstrative: ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono.

4. Interrogative: kdo? co? kterY? jakY?

5. Relative: kterY, jeni (who, which, that...), kdo, co.

6. Indefinite: Nekdo, nekterY, nejakY, kdo-si, co-si; quantitative pronouns: kaidY, vgechen; sam, sama, samo, tyi, tai, tei latter all expressing identity.

7. Negative: Nikdo, nic, iadnY ***

1. Personal pronouns: the longer forms— mne, mne, tebe, tobe— are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter forms— mi, me, te, ti— are used when no stress is needed, and are used AFTER the stressed word.

(Let us note here an important spelling rule: When the mascu Me sex ONLY is involved, the pronoun is oni.

When both sexes are involved, the pronoun is still oni. When only the female sex is involved, the pronoun is ONY. Modifying adjectives and verbs must agree with these endings. Ex.: Zeny donesly; Chlapi donesli; v gichni (both sexes) donesli.)

After prepositions, of course, the j becomes fi— do neho, k nemu, s ni, s nimi, etc.

2. Possessive pronouns: correspond to the personal pronouns. For the 1st person singular, the possessive pronoun is muj (ma, me) and plural: na g . For the 2nd person singular, it is tviij (tva, tve)— plural vas (vase). For the 3rd person singular, masculine and neuter, the possessive pronoun is jeho, which remains invariable; for the 3rd person singular feminine, it is jeji; for the 2nd person plural, it is jejich, for all 3 genders. It also remains invariable.

3. Demonstrative pronouns: ten, ta, to, tento, tenhle. Colloquially, tamten or tamhle is used for "onen" (yonder, that one). The gender of course, determines which you use.

4. Interrogative pronouns: Kdo, koho, komu, o kom, kYm; co, 6eho, emu, o eem, 6im? pro co, pro6, nae, zae.

KterY, jakY— the distinction between these 2 is not always strictly observed.

5. Relative pronouns: Kdo— he who.

Kdo nepracuje, at' neji.

Co— that which...Dojdeme k tomu, o eem jsem chtel niluvit. Co is also used colloquially, as is: Od to doby, co...; Lidi, co tam byli...

Jeni is used mostly in literary style; in speech it is replaced by "kterY"— instead of mu g, jehoi znam, we say ktereho znam.

6. Indefinite pronouns: nekdo, nekter:y, nejakY, nekde, nekdy; the suffix si: kdo-si, co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, 61-si; also the suffix -koli: kdokoli, cokoli, ja14-koli, kterjrkoli; also the prefix lee: lec-kdo.

KaidY may be used only with countable objects; v gechen for uncountable objects. In the plural, v gichni does duty for both countables and uncountables.

Ex.: kaidY elovek, kaida iena, kaide devee. vgichni lide, vgechny leny, vgechny chleby, vgechna dev6ata.

Sam means "alone": byl jsem tam sam SamY, sama, same, are used to express an idea of fullness or richness: stromy byly samy kvet; byli tam sami cizinci; na samem konci; u sameho okna.

7. Negative pronouns: if the prefix ni — is added to the personal pronouns, they are turned into negative pronouns ni-kdo, nic. From kterY, jakY, the negative pronoun iadnY is used before nouns: 'gadfly elovek, iadna iena, etc.

1. Besides verbal adjectives formed from the passive participle (see lesson 49) we shall mention two more important types of verbal adjectives: a) Verbal adjectives denoting purpose: psaci stroj— typewriter (machine made, intended for writing). These adjectives are formed from the past participle by means of replacing the final -/ by the suffix -ci (from imperfective verbs mostly).

SPJST IRA Tax laws allow each working person to deposit up to $2,000 and deduct that amount from their total income on federal income tax returns. When both spouses work, each can deposit up to $2,000. In the case of the non-working spouse, a total of $2,250 can be deposited in both accounts. (A minimum of $250 must be deposited in the non-working spouse's IRA.)
