District IV Holds Seminars

Sales Representatives in attendance Wednesday, May 8 at Lowake Inn in Lowake. Lodges represented included Lodge No. 49, Lodge No. 97, and Lodge No. 160. ***.

SFM Gene McBride held dinner/seminars at Seymour and Lowake along with District IV Director Stanley Broz for the active sales representatives in District IV. Of the 25 producing sales representatives in District IV 18 were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on to bigger and better things - "Don't be left behind."

It is the lodge's and members' duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

In recent times we all have been seeing and hearing about the decline of the education in our schools, and, as far as this editor is concerned, that criticism has been justified. We have been blaming our teachers, educators, etc. also, tc some extent, justified, however, where does the blame really mostly lie? How about the parents?

Are they immune from blame?

Not long ago, if this editor remembers correctly, some Japanese educators visited the Temple School System (as one in Texas) and stated that they were surprised at the low status of our educational system in the United States.

Your editor has been somewhat alarmed at the English grammar he hears and sees used for some time.

Here is a good example of what is meant by this article -- "Are the parents to blame?" The Texas Educational System, we understand, has a "no pass - no play" rule -- if a student does not pass their academic subjects in school in one year, that student cannot take part in competitive sports the next year.

Imagine this editor's surprise this week upon hearing and seeing on television that the PARENTS of some football players have gone to court to force the school to allow their students (who failed in their academic grades) to play football anyway. How stupid!

The judge told them it was the law, so they plan to pursue this further -- do they want their students to be "dummies?"

This reminds yours truly of a joke about "two dumb football players."

The football coach came to the English grammar teacher in a high school and told him that he understood that the teacher was failing two of his best football players in grammar. The English teacher replied: "Yes, they were not only dumb, they were stupid."

The coach asked if the teacher did not agree that the school needed a good football team and the teacher agreed and told the coach to send those two into his room at 7 a.m. to take a "special" test in grammar. It was agreed and the two players connived to sit close together to help each other out. (The rest of the class was going to take a regular grammar test at 8 a.m. -one hour later.)

The students arrived at 7 a.m. and the teacher told them this test`was for their purpose, only, and not to be revealed. He said: "I will give each of you one and the same question. It is a sentence and you fill in the blank." He did so and the sentence read: "Old ." One leaned MacDonald had a to the smarter one and asked, what did MacDonald have?" The other replied that MacDonald had a FARM. The other replied: "Oh, yeah, how do you spell farm?" The other whispered: "Boy, you are STUPID; you spell farm ei - ei - o!"

Are these the type of student graduates these "concerned" parents want? *** Millions of taxpayers are awaiting refund checks from the federal government that they would have been better off not getting.

According to the IRS, 7 out of 9

workers have too much tax withheld from their paychecks. This amounts to an interest - free loan from the worker to the government for a year or longer.

Some of the value of that money is lost forever to inflation -- now running about 4 percent a year.

You can stop this drain by adjusting the amount to be withheld on Form W - 4, Employe's Withholding Allowance Certificate which is available from your employer's personnel office.

The most recent W - 4 lets you reduce the amount taken from your pay if you are a two - income married couple or if you have other special circumstances. Among these: Alimony payments,itemized deductions, moving expenses, business losses and qualified retirement contributions. A formula translates these into "allowances" that can be listed on your W - 4 in addition to the regular personal exemptions for yourself and dependents.

Each allowance frees $1,040 of salary and wages from withholding.

But don't claim a higher number of exemptions than you are entitled to have. There is a $500 penalty and the prospect of a prison term for doing so.

As long as you list 14 or fewer exemptions, however, your employer sends no special notice to the IRS. Keep in mind that changing the amount of money taken from your pay has no impact on how much tax you eventually will pay. But it does make a difference in the size of your paycheck.

General Motors Corporation is recalling 121,095 cars equipped with 2.5 - liter L4 engines because the engines may leak and catch fire. The fire could spread to the passenger compartment. The leak is located at the throttle body injection fuel - feed pipe connection. Models involved are: 1984 Buick Century and Skylark; 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity and Citation; 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass/Ciera and Omega, and Pontiac 6000 and Phoenix, manufactured from August to December, 1983. GM will replace the fuel feed pipe. The Center for Auto Safety charges that as many as 2 million 1983 - 84 GM vehicles could have the same defect. ***

Now that the IRS (April 15) deadline has come and gone, millions of taxpayers are waiting for tax refunds.

Although the Internal Revenue Service has been plagued by computer problems this year, the agency insists that most of the checks will be out by May 30th. That's the date the government must start paying 13 percent interest to taxpayers who have not received their refunds. Interest is retroactive to April 15th. Taxpayers who file returns in Philadelphia, Brookhaven, New York or Kansas City, Missouri, seem to stand the best chance of a late refund. In an unrelated announcement, the IRS said the interest rate on underpayment and overpayment will drop from 13 percent to 11 percent July 1st. ***

With the onset of warm weather comes the temptation to lie in the sun for a healthy - looking tan. But if you are taking any type of medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand, urges the University of Houston. About 92 drugs in 10 different classes are photosensitizers.

If you are taking these drugs, your skin will burn much more easily than normal. ***

Minutes Of District III Spring Meeting

Uncorrected

The meeting was held April 21, 1985, at Lodge No. 35 in Elk. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flagbearer Melissa Burney, and the Lodge Motto by Darrell Uptmor.

President Henry Breitkreutz of host Lodge 35 welcomed all to the meeting.

Response was made by 1st Vice President Bernard Hlavaty.

The minutes of the fall meeting were approved.

Motion to accept the minutes was made by Mary Pavey and it was seconded by Otto Hanus. Motion carried.

An Audit Committee was appointed; President Joe Ondrusek

appointed Don Steinman and Carlyn Ondrusek; 1st Vice PreSident B.J. Hlavaty appointed Jeanie Mason.

Tribute was observed for departed members (30 members from 11 lodges) by 2nd Vice President Daniel Roznovsky.

Secretary Richard Burney reported no correspondence.

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge office reported for the officers and committees from the Supreme Lodge.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik made a report. Brother Sid presented incentive checks to sales representatives. Brother Sid also reported on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes.

A lunch break was then taken.

The meeting was called back to order at 1:15 p.m.

Special entertainment consisted of an acrobatic dance routine by 7 - year old Jesika Tierce, member of Lodge 35 Youth Club.

Children enjoying family day at Johnson's Appaloosa Ranch.

District HI First Family Day-April 21, 1985 At 3 p.m.

After the District III spring meeting adjourned, we proceeded to Johnson's Appaloosa Ranch for an afternoon of fun. When we arrived the horses were saddled and waiting at the area for riders. Everyone got to ride horses with proper riding instructions being provided. Then those who wanted to got a chance to run the cloverleaf barrels. The horses and riders did well.

Then we went for a trailride with a hayride for those who were not riding horses. During the trailride we observed about 90 head of Texas longhorn cows. After the trailride, when the horses were unsaddled, those

Lodge 15, Buckholts Meets Dear Members: We had a very pleasant surprise for the Lodge 15 regular monthly meeting.

SL President Howard Leshikar and his lovely wife, Mary, paid us a visit.

After he led us in prayer, we all enjoyed a covered dish supper.

Then lodge President Ann Balusek opened the meeting by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and we all remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed Sister Anna Fuchs. May she rest in peace.

Sister Balusek welcomed our visitors, Mary and Howard Leshikar, Dan Balusek and Lillie Zajicek. We were happy to have you; please come again.

On the sick list is Sister Carrie Svetlik. We hope and pray you are feeling better by now.

"Happy Birthday" is wished to Ed and Sidonia Svoboda and Mary Leshikar.

who wanted to got a chance to mount the horse from the back; some did better than others. With a little practice we could compete with Roy Rogers and Trigger. Some of the youth competed in sack races with cheering supporters. Then the youth of all ages had a chance at goat milking.

Next, we enjoyed a big bonfire with a wiener roast with all the trimmings.

Everyone went home happy, full and tired from a fun - filled afternoon at Johnson's Appaloosa Ranch. We want to thank Billy Jack Johnson, his two daughters, Sherri and Shawn and Mike for all their efforts in making District III Family Day such a success.

If you were not one of the 40 or so present, we can only tell you what you missed.

Sister Ann turned the meeting over to Brother Howard Leshikar, who brought us greetings from the Supreme Lodge office and explained about the State domino tournament. It will be held in September and October. It really does sound interesting and a lot of fun; you will be reading more about it later on.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m.

June 12th. It will be an Ice Cream supper. Be sure and come!

25, Ennis Has Favorable Reports

Thursday, May 9, at 8 p.m., the meeting was called to order by President James Whitfill. Brother Garry Mizell led the Pledge of Allegiance. President Whitfill commended everyone for their help

and fraternalism during the Polka Festival. He said this was important to make the festival such a success.

Our beautiful float won the Mayor's Cup in the festival parade! Elizabeth Ann Krajca and her helpers did a beautiful job. This trophy was on display at the meeting for everyone to admire. Our collection of these trophies is steadly growing year after year.

Due to the absence of Recording Secretary Kay Kovar, the minutes of the last meeting were read by Financial Secretary Margaret Krajca. These minutes were accepted after two corrections. Due to all the after festival business, no Executive Board meeting was held this month.

Sister Krajca read correspondence from the Whitfill family thanking for the use of the dining room after the services for their mother, also from the Joe L. Novak family for the donation to the St. John's Building Fund in his memory.

A letter was read about the change in the SPJST Bylaw for delegates to the convention; also about the amount of money for insurance that should be turned in yearly and a 15 percent increase over a period of three years to have one delegate for each 100 members, so let's help our sales representatives sell more insurance.

We need more delegates at the next convention!

A letter was also read suggesting to President Whitfill to organize a domino tournament (42 and straight).

The winner here would then compete against other winners. More details later. If interested contact Johnny I. Krajca; 875 - 6149.

Since Wednesday night bingo has been cancelled temporarily, the lodge has been approached by a VFW Post wanting to lease the lodge building for bingo. The lodge would retain the bar and the kitchen. This will be investigated and if all works out, the members voted to lease the lodge for $150 each bingo night and the Post would do the cleanup job after each bingo.

The youth club meeting has not been held this month yet, so Sister Linda did not make a report.

Treasurer Emma Trojacek gave her financial report. After a lot of extra expenses concerning the polka festival, the results proved to be very favorable.

Sister Hazel Laza (former kitchen treasurer) gave her final kitchen report. The kitchen has shown to be doing very well.

There were no deaths this month.

On the sick list are Sister Albina Nesuda and Ronnie Cikanek. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

The lodge will not lease the building for exercise classes as was announced at the last meeting. Their former location was made available to them.

New members for this month are Patrick Dolezalik. Additional insurance for Louis Dolezalik.

Annunity member is Dorothy Holy.

These members were warmly welcomed to our lodge family!

President Whitfill asked Brother Van Fowler to present a beautiful 50 year pin to Sister Anna (Mrs. Charlie) Trojacek who is a very active member and is a member of the Kitchen Committee. Congratulations, Annie!

After a lengthy meeting, a motion was made and seconded to adjourn.

This meeting was attended by 35 members.

On the entertainment calendar for May 25 will be The Lone Star Czechs (a new and upcoming band) who will play for your dancing pleasure. They are becoming very popular and are

Fifty - Year Pin Recipients Honored Sunday, April 14, 1985, Lodge No. 47 at Seaton honored two sisters who were present for the occasion of receiving their 50 - year pins. Sister Marie Klinkovsky Hegar and Sister Anna Driska Raska were presented their pins by District. II Director Willie E. Kohutek who, also, spoke of the events that the Temple Daily Telegram had of interest to the members in 1935, the years these sisters became SPJST

Lodge 49, Rowena May Meeting Members of Lodge 49 held their quarterly meeting May 1 at the lodge hall. There were twenty members present. All officers were present.

The meeting was convened by President Elizabeth Walther, who also led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and a tribute to our departed members.

The minutes of our last meeting were approved as read. All committee reports were given and approved.

The 2 - day kolache/noodle sale at the State Ethnic Festival was a good success. The only problem was the weather definitely did not cooperate with us; we had lots of stormy weather, both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The direct billing was well discussed and accepted by our lodge.

A. discussion on the premium refund check versus additional insurance was explained by our District IV Director Stanley Broz. We are always happy to have Stanley and Martha attend our meetings.

We also talked about and hoping to get a youth club started in Lodge 49 this year..

51, Ellinger Approves Picnic

Dear Members: "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER." It may be a little late to report the outcome of our quarterly meeting in March, but as the saying goes: it is better if it is a little late than not reporting at all.

GOOD NEWS! We'll have our bi annual picnic this year Sunday, September 15, at the Ellinger C of C Recreation Hall. Registration will begin at approximately 10 a.m., and a "Happy Hour" from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. with FREE refreshments, a barbecued chicken dinner will begin at 12:30 p.m. Of course, all the trimmings will go along with the chicken.

There will not be any charge for the members of this lodge, however,

The membership meeting for Lodge No. 88 was held May 13, at 7:30 p.m.

President Ermis reported that plans for "HOMECOMING WITH A SPLASH", June 2 have been completed and reiterated the activities which we will enjoy. Don't forget that this day all members will receive a free meal, and, since this is the official opening day for our pool, there will be bathing beauty contests and other outdoor activities.

Our financial reports given by our financial secretary and treasurer as well as our committee activity reports indicate that April was a profitable and enjoyable month. The Youth Club was busy, the Choral Club and Czech Concert Orchestra performed at various Czech Fests, the Men's Club and Birthday Club Sisters performed helpful tasks, and the Entertainment Committee provided beautiful dance music for us.

We were honored to have the administrators and directors of the S.P.J.S.T. Needville and Taylor Rest Homes. They attended so that they might accept the donations which our Board of Trustees so generously presented to these homes. Also present in honor of the occasion was SL President Howard Leshikar. We are pleased that these guests could be with us.

Dramatic Club Vice President Marie Stayton announced that an English comedy is planned for November 10th.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Royal Warnasch gave us the details of the April board meetings. We learned that our barbecue house is not in good enough condition for repairs so information and plans for a new building are being gathered. The resignation of one board member, Brother Louis Darilek, was accepted.

Upon motion duly made, seconded and passed, the position will be left vacant for the remainder of the year.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka reported on State Director's activities such as the loan rate of 12'1 percent and the Annuity interest rate of 11 percent for May. He also discussed plans for a domino tournament that should interest many of our members.

Brother Souchek spoke of the importance of VE Day due to the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and, as usual, added a little humor to his story. Thanks for the smiles, Brother Souchek.

Needville Members Honored

Floresville Lodge 107 May Meeting Lodge 107 held its regular monthly meeting May 5 at 4:30 p.m.

President Bayer called the meeting to order and the pledge was led by Trey Bielefeld.

All officers answered officers' roll call with the exception of Vice President Burleson.

Lillie Foitek and Helen Bayer were reported home from the hospital and recovering slowly. We wish them better health in the coming months.

Cy Welden Pavliska is recovering nicely from minor surgery.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as corrected.

Treasurer's report was given by Jill Suggs.

David Lyssy took out additional insurance and 4 transfers from Lodge 93 to Lodge 107 were accepted on a motion by Joe Bob Pavliska, and seconded by Liz Bielefeld. Motion carried.

Our new members are William and Linda Lyssy, parents, and Amy and Chad Lyssy, children. We are very happy to welcome the Lyssy family into our lodge and hope they will enjoy

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported the campers are to assemble at the Floresville Flower Shop at 9 a.m.

Thursday, June 5,to go to Lone Star Camp at La Grange. They will be returning June 8 and are to be picked up at the same place.

Roxanne Bayer, Peanut Festival representative from Lodge 107, gave a report on the progress of entertainment for the festival days.

President Bayer made several announcements concerning the Fire Department and the KCs. May and June hall rentals are the Triesenhahan - Hartmann wedding -May 25th, and the Bayer Reunion -June 2nd.

President Bayer also read the rules concerning the SPJST domino tournament. Some local interest was shown so we should have a team of players going from Lodge 107.

Gussie Sralla was the winner of the door prize for May. The next meeting will be June 9, 1985 at 4:30 p.m. All members try to attend!

The meeting was adjourned after collection of dues. Refreshments were served.

Houston Lodge 88 News Well, I guess the biggest news around Lodge 88 is that Joe Franklin is back. For those of you who don't know Joe Franklin, let me tell you about him. Joe Franklin is the lodge mascot. He wandered into the lodge picnic area about this time last year; a tired, beaten, people - shy half - grown dog. The caretakers adopted him.

They fed him, bathed him, and really became attached to him. He got his name from Joe Miksch and Franklin Bravenec, two of the caretakers. It started as a joke but that's now his official name. He has developed into a big black lovable dog and he loves those guys. He disappeared one day last week. He must have gone on a "spring junket" and forgot to tell anyone where he was going. Kathy and Mike Trefell made a trip to the dog pound in search of him but to no avail.

Thursday night he came limping back home looking like he's been through a war. He was tired and very hungry.

Bingo stopped while the caller made the announcement that Joe Franklin had returned. Such excitement.

Anyway to end this story --- Joe Franklin ate and slept for two days and all is back to normal. Needless to say, the girls in the office and all the caretakers are happy and Joe Franklin had better not leave again.

RUSS MORGAN'S BAND played in the Chandelier Ballroom Friday, May 17th. This year marks the 50th anniversary of this band playing in the Morgan Manner. Jack Morgan is the present director.

THE ELLINGER COMBO played Saturday night, May 18 and May 25 John Sullivan appears. The Sullivan Band is a local band playing the Big Band sounds and songs. This is a DRESS - CODE dance. Purchase your tickets at the door; the price is $7.50 per ticket. Call for your table reservations.

The first Blue Room Party of the year was held Sunday, May 5 from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Henry Tannenberger and his band entertained from 5 p.m. on. Edna and Willie Wehring served a delicious fried chicken dinner with baked potatoes, peas and carrots, Italian Cream Cake plus the usual condiments. Three of their four children were there to assist them, namely, Gary, Linda and Debbie. That family knows how to work together.

They all pitch in and make a big job look easy. Nat Gonzales was in charge of the beverage bar and the members kept him very busy for awhile. We're all proud of Nat; he knows how to keep things going yet never seems in a hurry. The Blue Room Committee this year consists of Chairman Ed Miculka with Willie Wehring and Millie Manack. Millie had charge of the tickets, Willie the food, and Ed and Nat worked in the bar. They have a good team going and are already planning another party for September.

Emma Jarisch is home from the hospital after her back surgery.

Brother Jarisch informed me that she is able to be up a little bit with the aid of a leg brace and a walker. She had extensive nerve damage that only time and patience will heal.

David Miculka is still in the hospital battling an infection in his right leg.

The infection seems to be resisting the antibiotics used so far, but David is confident one will do the trick soon.

A large number from the Choral Group and Concert Band appeared in Rosenberg at the Czech Fest Sunday, May 5th. The Choral Group is under the direction of Tim Kostom and Rudy Dybala directs the Concert Band.

Lodge 139, Danbury Has Family Day Dear Members: The May 8 meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 was called to order by President Vincent Hechler. Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the last meeting, and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave their reports.

Tommie Lostak read correspondence from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar detailing information about the upcoming domino tournament.

It was reported the Family Day barbecue held April 20 was a big success. The barbecue was attended by 225 people. It was our pleasure and honor to have, as a spe,....al guest, District V Director Jerry Prochazka, who delivered a brief message to the

gathering. All of the guests enjoyed the de,licious barbecue, which was prepared by members Joe and Nina Vrazel, and the wide assortment of delicious pastries, provided through the generosity of the ladies of the lodge. Several door prizes were given to those attending.

Helen Filipp read a letter from Director Prochazka thanking the lodge for inviting him to the barbecue; she also announced that Albert Heiman was out of intensive care but remains in the hospital.

The members enjoyed a wide variety of foods at their social after the meeting.

Lodge 142, Houston Honors Members Our Lodge 142 monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Mary Ann Kieschnick, Sunday, May 5th.

The forty members who were present stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers with all present, except Board Member Rosie Schilhab.

Then the secretary read the minutes from the previous meeting. These minutes stood approved as read.

Correspondence was also read by Secretary Alice Jochen.

We had 50 - year membership recipients announced for Ms. Georgie Lee Buchanan, Ann Louise Ward and Chas. A. Cilny. We are very proud of these members and wish to congratulate them.

All officers' reports were read.

New applicant for this month was Tiffany Michelle Wallom signed up by Sales Representative Robert Kieschnick.

Brother Henry Hermis moved to accept the new member; it was seconded by Sister Libby Kovar.

Motion carried.

We had a "youngest member present" award; Brian Merryman received the $5 prize.

Capsule attendance prize for $15 went unclaimed by Thomas Morgan.

Next month the prize will be $20.

JSTLodge 154, Ft. Worth To Meet June 9th Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president Brother Jerry Milan. He led us to the Pledge of Allegiance. The members remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed Brother Jerry W. Merlick and for the recovery of Brother Bill Renfro who is in St. Joseph's Hospital.

In the absence of our secretary, Sister Mary Renfro (she was at the hospital), Sister Mary Pavey read the minutes. All reports were approved as read.

Brother Don Steinman gave a report on the District III meeting and also on the new policies. Check with your sales representative for information.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on the cards that were sent.

Brother Milan reported on plans the Supreme Lodge will have for domino players from the different lodges in competition. More details later.

Brothers Don Steinman, Frankie Milan and Benny Pavey are on the committee for our lodge.

Congratulations were extended to Brother Joe Milan and Brother Joe Skrasek on their 50 years in Lodge 154.

Due to Sister Renfro not being present, they will get their pins later.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland,along with her husband, are vacationing in Puerta Villarta, Mexico so, in her absence, her assistant, Sis' zr

Carrie Milan, got two beautiful plants and orchid corsages from the youth club given to the oldest mother,‘Sister Mary Hale and youngest, Sister Martha Milan. Corsages given to the mother with the most children, Sister Rose Steinman, mother of the year, Sister Anna Johnson and Mary Pavey (yours truly) was really surprised as mother to them all! Thank you.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious dinner. Sister Mary Renfro prepared the meat and brought it to the hall on her way to the hospital.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sister Florence Merlick and family on the loss of her husband. May he rest in eternal peace.

Sister Anna Johnson had foot surgery today and we were glad to hear she is doing OK. We wish her and Brother Bill Renfro a quick recovery.

We extend our congratulations to Parker and Sister Ella Davis on their 35th anniversary and to our graduates Debra Holford, valedictorian of North Side High School, and Leann Mason.

Best wishes for a successful future.

Also congratulations to Larry and Sister Mary Hargiss on their first anniversary spent in San Antonio last weekend. Sister Lori Steinman just returned from a cruise to the Bahamas and reported she had a wonderful time.

Sister Mary Hale had a nice visit with her granddaughter Mary Wilson from Austin.

Brother Emil Milan was honored Saturday night at a banquet for a 20 year reunion and roast by L.D. Bell High School. Congratulations, Emil!

Lodge 178, Longview Kilgore To Meet The May 9, 1985 meeting of SPJST Lodge 178 was called to order by 2nd Vice President Doug Kimmey. James Harris led the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto. Hugo Kocian asked for a moment of silence for our departed brothers and sisters.

Roll call of officers showed following officers absent; namely, President John Campbell, 1st Vice President Dan Brown, Treasurer Loma. Harris, Youth Leader Floyd Snider, Sgt. - at - Arms Joe Webb, Flagbearer Kathy Brown, Parliamentarian Chuck Kunkel and Board members Carla Hale and Les Weisner.

Minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

Communications read were from the Supreme Lodge advising us that 21 of our members had tentatively been selected for scholarships, changes in bylaws had been made in determining the number of delegates to future conventions, and a domino tournament of SPJST members only was authorized at the April meeting of Supreme Lodge. A letter of resignation from 1st Vice President Dan Brown was read. Reason for resignation was not being able to give the time he felt

someone in the office should since he has been working out - of - town and there is a possibility of a permanent transfer. A letter of resignation from President John Campbell was read.

Crucial business interests were cited as reason for resignation.

The committee reports were given.

New applicant Clara Elizabeth Coombs was accepted into membership.

Discussion of filling the vacancies of offices of president and 1st vice president was held. Loye Alvis made a motion to postpone the election of officers until the June meeting; and seconded by Linda Downs. Motion carried. Viola Kocian made a motion that 2nd Vice President Doug Kimmey be appointed acting president until the June meeting when a president and vice president will be elected; it was seconded by Loye Alvis. Motion carried.

Gladys DeWitt made a motion to pay all bills; seconded by Hugo Kocian. Motion carried.

The meeting was adjourned by Acting President Doug Kirnmey.

Dear Members and Friends: Thursday night, May 11 at 8 p.m., President Harold Bergmann sounded the gavel to convene the Warrenton Lodge No. 179 regular meeting with a nice attendance. He also led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members stood a moment in silence for our devoted member, Lynn Leonhardt Little John, who lost her life in a car accident May 4th. She was a charter member. Sympathy is extended to the family.

Janette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting. Arnold Peters gave the financial report of the past two months.

Ralph Beard stated the Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch were thankful for the clothing and numerous other items delivered to them recently; and they will continue to appreciate anything we can donate to them in the future. He also enumerated the wonderful work this ranch does for these children before the age of release. They will train them in some skill before starting on their own.

The Entertainment Committee reported on findings of places of interest for the lodge to tour in the near future. No definite decision was reached, therefore, the committee will proceed to add more places to choose from.

The Food Committee stated the lodge will furnish cold cuts for the June 13th at 8 p.m. meeting and '4nembers are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

Choral Group Meets

Seaton

Dear Members and Friends: The Seaton Choral Group met Tuesday, May 14 for their rehearsal.

The following were present, namely, Dorothy Morris, Martha Klusacek, Mathu and Elsie Cabla, Georgia Sodek, Anne Krcha, Annie Jakubec, Albina Mikeska, Mary Holick, Frank and Lillian Mikulec, Henry and Helen Janacek, Ike and Florence Steffek and their son, Kevin, Della Psencik,. Emily Stuteville, Otto Hanus and Dorothy Pechal. We sang many old favorites and the popular ones played at the dances and radio programs.

Sister Jakubec, song leader, led us and the accompanists were Henry Janacek and Ike Steffek on accordions and Kevin Steffek of El Paso on the tuba. Sure did sound good. Thanks for coming!

Afterwards, Sister Dorothy Morris, choral group president, opened the business meeting. Sister Emily Stuteville read the minutes of the last meeting. Sister Morris resigned her positions as president and reporter.

Sister Helen Janacek was promoted to president and Dorothy Pechal will be the reporter for the rest of the year.

We then discussed the final plans of the choral group's picnic to be held Sunday, May 19th at the hall's annex building.

Our next practice will be Tuesday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m. so be sure to mark it on the calendar. We are still needing more singers, especially men's voices.

Thank you, Sister Morris, for serving many years in various capacities in our choral group. We'll be missing you but hope you will continue to come sing with us.

Cesat Annual Meeting The annual general membership meeting of the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT) will be held Saturday, May 25, 1985 at 1 p.m. in the meeting room of the SPJST Supreme Lodge at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. All members and guests will have an opportunity to voice their opinion and to receive a photo copy of the history of the Czech Club at the University of Texas which was written for the Texas Centennial Celebration in 1936 by the late Mr. Roman Bartosh. This very interesting document was recently made available to Mr. Calvin Chervenka from the SPJST Archives.

April 13, 1985 Mr. Glenn Hutka, president of RVOS, presented CESAT with a $200 donation. RVOS continues to demonstrate its interest in preserving our Czech heritage through education and has a long record of granting financial support to CESAT. Dr. Clinton Machann is busy developing the preliminary plans for the Music Symposium that is to be held November 14 - 16, 1986 at the Brazos Center in Bryan - College Station. The CESAT Executive Committee has approved an initial grant of $1,000 for the symposium and is seeking funding from additional sources. Professor Dr. Frantisek Galan has informed CESAT that he will be leaving the University of Texas in Austin at the end of the school year and will be accepting a position in Atlanta, Georgia. The UT students, the Czech community and all members of CESAT are grateful to Dr. Galan for his devotion in teaching the Czech language at UT and wish him much success in his new endeavor.

We have recently learned that Miss Donna Kaspar, who attended the Czech language summer school at Charles University with us last summer, will enter her senior year in the fall to complete her studies toward a degree in education and currently has the requisite credits to be certified to teach the Czech language upon graduation. Donna lives in Taylor and hopes to be able to start her career there. CESAT wants to offer her much encouragement to accomplish her goals in her chosen profession.

Mr. James Mendl, a former president of CESAT, co - author of "Krasna Amerika" and who has taught the Czech language in various areas in Texas, is reported to be directing the Czech language correspondence courses at UT. CESAT expresses its appreciation of his work and offers any assistance it may be able to help Mr. Mendl in this program. Jim is currently serving on the Committee of Higher Education and also has accepted the chairmanship of a Special Committee to explore the possibility of re - issuing old, popular Czech folk music records recorded by Texas bands.

Mr. Mike Winnett is completing his first year of teaching at Flatonia High School. His curriculum includes teaching the Czech language. Mr. Winnett should be congratulated and supported for his dedication to the teaching of Czech language and Czech culture. Mike plans to further his

education through graduate study in the near future.

Professor Joe Skrivanek has informed CESAT that he did not intend to imply that an endowment to establish a University Chair of Czech Studies in Texas should be awarded top a particuthr university but rather that any major university in Texas could be eligible for such an endowment.

At the Executive Committee meeting in Taylor held March 23, 1985 Professor Skrivanek, president of the Czech Education Foundation of Texas (CESAT), announced that the Foundation is proposing that funding for such a chair be solicited and he invited CESAT to participate in this solicitation. The CESAT Executive Committee passed a resolution to go on record in support of this effort. the regrets CESAT Professor of misunderstanding Skrivanek's remarks regarding university endowment and wishes to correct that error in this article.

Dr. Ronald Woytek, a recipient of a student loan from CESAT, has completed his medical career studies and now has started his chiropractic practice. CESAT wishes him much success in his new career.

Following the CESAT meeting therewill be a meeting of the Texas Council for Higher Education at which will be presented details of the annual budget, and student loan activities.

Lesikar-Shiller 95th Reunion April 21, 1985, the dedication of a historical marker honoring Josef Lidumil Lesikar was held at the New Ulm Cemetery located at New Ulm in Austin County. Mr. Lesikar was the leader of the group of Czechs who came to Texas in 1853.

The principal speaker was Mr. James A. Bishop, the historical commissioner of Austin County.

Following the dedication, the 95th Lesikar - Shiller Reunion was held at Firemen's Park Hall in New Ulm; about 55 people attended. The blessing before lunch was given by Ernest Spiegelhauer of Victoria.

After a delicious covered dish luncheon, a business meeting was held.

One of the announcements made by the chairman was about a book owned

by John L. Kroulik. It was Leo Baca's "Czech Immigration Passenger Lists." It disappeared at the 1984 reunion and Dr. Kroulik would appreciate its return.

The group was told how much it would cost to have the tombstones of Josef Lidumil Lesikar and his wife, Terezie, cleaned. Enough money was collected to have the cleaning done.

It was not said at the time, but Mrs. Frances S. Lesikar is now residing at Sweet Briar Nursing Home in Bellville, Texas. She is confined to a wheel chair.

As she has done for many years, Miss Rosalie Lesikar furnished some beautiful flowers to decorate the hall.

A list of deceased members was read. They are as follows: Leona Stalmach Sula, Louise Shiller Maresh, Edwin Lidumil Stalmach, Benidicta Leshikar Bailey, Eddie Schiller, Frank H. Steve Shiller and Ervin Moore were selected to assist the chairman in 1986.

A list of people and the amounts they donated for the Josef Lidumil Historical marker was read.

The reunion will be held in 1986 at the same place April 20, which is the third Sunday.

After the business meeting the rest of the evening was spent visiting and trying to identify old family pictures.

Ranger School Reunion A Success

Dear Editor and Readers: I just want you to know that our first school reunion was a success; it was a joy to see all the smiling faces, everyone was truly glad to see each other. You can imagine what it feels like to see someone you have not seen for 50 years.

Everyone liked it so much they voted to have another reunion next year (same time, same place). Motion was made and approved to keep the same officers; namely, President Emil Janicek, Secretary Juanita Wychopen and Treasurer Joe D. Dubcak.

The teachers who attended were Harold Bowen from Wimberly, Lillian (Zavodny) Mikulec from Buckholts, Marie (Johnson) Schiller, Ella (Pechal) Simek, Laura (Marek)* Sula, Daisy (Cook) Turner, and Edwin Tyroch from Temple.

We enjoyed each teacher tell of their highlights in teaching.

The Simmank family had the largest attendance of nine ex - students.

Mildred (Becka) Bevan, ex - student, travelled the longest distance (Connerville, Oklahoma).

Annie (Ruzicka) Vaenesian from Hurst, was the oldest ex - student who attended (86 years young).

I want to thank all who helped us advertise. The Vestnik is outstanding; it reaches many of our ex - students.

Many thanks to those who helped me obtain addresses of ex - students and teachers; also it was a joy to work with such an enthusiastic committee. It just goes to show you that love for each other is the right way of life.

Albina (Divis) Rychlik of San Angelo sent me some poems for the reunion she is a collector of poems and is an ex - student of Red Ranger.

I came across one in my devotion book which I would like to dedicate to her and all who attended the reunion.

June Meeting Suggestions C Shoe Shiner F r iad Supplies Needed: One piece of heavy flannel, at least 4x8', pinking shears, two cafe curtain rings, needle and thread, permanent felt tipped marking pens.

To Make: Cut a piece of flannel with pinking shears. Fold each end into a point. Stitch on curtain rings securely so that Dad can put his fingers through them for a fast shine. Decorate with pens -- trace around your shoe to make a footprint, draw a smile face, etc.

The game is over when the Hare is touched or has reached Home safely. The first to touch him may be the Hare for the next game.

Balloon Badminton To make each racquet, tape a flat wooden stick, between two paper plates, gluing for extra support. Use a partially inflated balloon for Birdie.

Bat the Birdie back and forth over a clothesline or rope strung between two trees. You can play as singles or as teams. When one side misses the Birdie and it touches the ground, the other side makes a point. The first side to make 15 points wins the game.

GAME Dr. Safety - A Quiz Show To Play: Select someone to act as "Dr. Safety." Have two children act as announcers in the audience. They can use hand microphones (cut off broomstick handles and paint them).

One child acts as judge and has a small bell and buzzer. Prepare a list of questions on traffic and bicycle safety for your area. The announcers select someone in the audience and Dr. Safety asks the question. The judge sounds the bell for a right answer or gives the buzzer for a wrong one. For a laugh, give a safety pin for a right answer and a bandaid for a wrong one.

Some sample questions which can be used for either children or adults are as follows: 1) If you must walk in the road, on which side should you walk? (Facing traffic).

2) If several of you are riding bicycles together, what positions do you take? (Single file).

3) What is the best color to wear when you are walking after dark?

(Light colored clothing).

4) What is meant by jay - walking?

(Crossing streets in the middle of the block).

5) What is the speed limit on side streets in your area? (Check with local authorities).

6) The school bus driving ahead of you stops to load passengers. What do you do? (Stop).

District II Summer Youth Activities' Schedule The following are important dates for all leaders and youth members plus all members in District II. Please mark these dates and plan to be present at these activities. Detailed reports on each activity will be printed at a later date.

May 31 -- is the date of all names of qualified youth who may attend camp to be sent to DYC. June 24 -- All YAD entry blanks for crafts, individual talent, group talent and royalty (including autobiography) are due; send to DYC. July 14 -- YAD VERY IMPORTANT DAY! All youth ages 6 through 17 who qualify, are eligible to participate. YAD will be held at Lodge No. 18, Elgin. Let's all go to Elgin on this day and enjoy the talent, crafts and royalty and support the youth of your area.

July 14 -- Camp application forms due to DYC on this day.

August 2, 3, 4 & 5 -- Teenage Camp at Camp Val Verde beginning at 10 a.m. with lots of excitement, fun, and sports with your friends. Plan to be there!

August 5, 6, 7 & 8 -- Junior Camp beginning at 10:30 a.m. This will be a great experience with lots of fun, lots of activities. See you there!

Summer Activities Planned

Lodge 24, Cyclone YC Plans Outing

Dear District VI Youth and Adult Leaders, Summer is here and I am hoping that you are ready for an exciting summer in SPJST work.

The District VI Leader/Youth Training was held Saturday, May 4, 1985 at the Presbyterian Church Fellowship Building in El Campo with 27 in attendance.

Mrs. Janet Marek, District VI youth counselor, presided. State Youth Director Sue Meadows was able to join us with a get - acquainted game. The rules and point system were discussed and a rule book for each family was distributed to each leader. The three Lodges -- Taiton No. 30, El Campo Hillje No. 40, and Victoria No. 32, were in attendance.

The District VI camp will be June 16 - 19 at Bastrop State Park in Bastrop.

You will notice that we are going to camp Sunday insteadof Monday. There was some difficulty in scheduling camp this year. Camp forms should be mailed to me before June 1, 1985. Be sure the application is notarized.

The themes of night parties will be Sunday, "Nerd Night," "Punk Rock Party" for Monday, and Tuesday night will be a TV night. More information will be given later.

District YAD will be held at the Taiton Hall, July 14 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Registration will start at 12 p.m. Be sure to check your rule • book for correct categories in crafts. Be sure to encourage your youngsters to enter the talent as well as queen contests.

The Educational Tour will be to Galveston this summer. The projected dates are June 26th or July 24th. I will let you know which date, later. This year we are taking only one bus. The active youth will have first choice.

Please let your leader know if you are interested in going.

•After the planning session, Sue Meadows showed the group how to knit with straws. The youngsters made a macrame mouse or rabbit. A display of various crafts was available for ideas.

After the meeting the group enjoyed pizza at the Pizza Hut. As you see we were planning a busy summer for all members to enjoy.

I would like to thank the SPJST for allowing me to attend Longhorn Recreation Lab at Lake Brownwood in March. Melvin and I learned a lot of new games, dances, and recreational activities that we are willing to share with others.

The Leader Retreat at Camp Lone Star was excellent. I hope that next year District VI will be well represented by others besides myself.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to broaden my knowledge with new ideas.

Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge 24 held its monthly meeting Wednesday, May 8, 1985 beginning at 7:30 p.m. We had a rather large attendance with twenty five members, one guest and two adults present. We welcomed Adam Bruggman to our club. Also our State Youth Director Sue Meadows visited our club this month. Thank you for coming, Mrs Meadows. We enjoyed your visit very much. Do come, again!

Our summer trip will be going to Six Flags in Arlington, as I mentioned before. We will go on a chartered bus.

The date we plan to go is June 2, 1985.

We presented our mothers with small potted flowers for Mother's Day. Before our meeting was adjourned we had our annual election of club officers. I wish to thank Mr. Sefcik and his wife for having my letters in the Vestnik so promptly.

District VII And IV Camps June 5, 6, 7 & 8 Camp Lone Star LaGrange, Texas It is camp time again - plans are near completion and great things are about to happen. New friends are in the making for us this year as we will be camping with District IV and also new campers from District VII have been invited to camp with us.

Get out the ole suitcase and start packing to cut down on last minute rushing. Things you will need are as follows: Camp clothes for 4 days, long pants for horseback and (comfortable tie shoes and shocks) Swim suit - towel Personal care items: soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, bath towels, etc.

Bed gear: sheets, pillow case, light cover or sleeping bag Two dozen cookies per camper Flashlight Mosquito repellent, sun screen Nametag (each club should plan nametags). We will judge nametags.

For the night parties you may plan around the following themes.

Autograph Party - (pillow case or shirt) or etc.

Punk Party - dress for this party.

Balloons and shave cream may be brought for one special event but must be turned in upon arrival to DYC. (Will be used at special event.]

Bring your favorite records.

Kite and string (each camper).

Each camper 6 clothes pins, 1

Pringles can or similar round, empty can and one knee high lady's stocking.

Sack lunch for noon meal on the 5th.

Arrive any time after 10:30 a.m. the 5th. We will leave around 10 a.m. the 8th.

30, Taiton YC Lodge 30, Taiton Prepares For Summer Activities Youth Club Activities

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club attended the District VI Training Class which was held May 4th. We discussed the new rule book, camp and also we worked on craft.

We held our monthly meeting at the Taiton Community Center, May 5 at 2:30 p.m. President Michelle Srubar brought the meeting to order. Michael Hermis led the Pledge and Linda Treumer recited a prayer.

For the contest, 6 to 9 ages were asked to make a Mother's Day card.

Winner was Lenice Kaspar (1st). In ages 10 to 12 were asked to make a gift for Mother. Marcy Dorotik received 1st place. In 13 to 17 they were asked to make an arrangement. Winners were 1st -- Jean Dorotik, 2nd Janna Dornak, 3rd -- Landis Dornak.

After the meeting we made refrigerator magnets for craft.

For refreshments we had punch with popcorn squares and cookies.

The SPJST Lodge 40 Youth Club held their meeting May 2, at the American Legion Hall.

We honored our senior graduates with a hamburger supper with all the trimmings. The youth club paid for the party and the mothers helped serve the meal. We would like to thank Larry Karasek for cooking the hamburger meat.

We also elected officers for the coming year. The May birthday celebrant was Lori Holub.

—SPJSTWe, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 15, Buckholts, in behalf of the officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of ANNA VALASTA SVETLIK FUCHS, whose death became a reality for Anna Fuchs, Saturday, April 27, 1985 at King's Daughters Hospital in Temple, at the age of 78.

Sister Fuchs was born November 8, 1906 at Buckholts, Texas to John Svetlik, Sr. and his wife, Mary Adamek Svetlik. She was united in marriage with Ernest Fuchs, Jr. December 4, 1927 at Hope Lutheran Parsonage with the Rev. Otto Schawe officiating.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 15 of Buckholts for 58 years.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday in Hope Lutheran Church in Buckholts with the Rev. Larry Hundrick officiating. Burial was in the Hope Lutheran Memorial Park in Buckholts.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Fuchs, Jr. of Buckholts; three sons, Ernest Fuchs III of Hillsboro, Denson Fuchs of Buckholts and Dwight Fuchs of Georgetown; a daughter, Marian Fuchs Wright of Richmond; two brothers, Anton Svetlik of Buckholts and Frank Svetlik of Temple; two sisters, Rosie Mayastik and Frances Vogelsang of Cameron; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Green Funeral Home of Cameron was in charge of arrangements.

Sister Fuchs will be missed greatly.

She was a very dear loving mother, friend and a wonderful sister - in - law (I loved dearly).

May she rest in eternal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

He was born November 27, 1907 in Moravia, Czechoslovakia and came to the United States in 1920. He owned and operated Model Auto Works for 35 years in Fort Worth before retiring and selling his business. He then spent several years working for Mobil Scout in Arlington.

He was a member of Lodge No. 154 since 1947.

Rosary was held Friday at 7 p.m. at Shannon's North Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Merlick of Fort Worth; a son, Carroll Merlick of Dallas; a brother, Joe Merlick of Fort Worth; a sister, Marie Edwards of Denver City; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church with Rev. William R. Hoover officiating.

Pallbearers were Jay Merlick, Chris Merlick, Bill McGraw, Reagan Krupka and W.B. Collup.

Interment was at Latret Land.

A Study Of The Culture Of The Czech -Moravian Community Of Texas

By Kevin Hannan Dallas, Texas Dedicated To Jaroslav "Jerry" Pavlik An integral part of the Czech Moravian's concept of national identity was his sympathies towards Pan - Slavism and Cyrilo Methodianism. It is true that not all Czech - Moravians were conscious of the role these sympathies played within the overall concept of national identity. Pan - Slavism and Cyrilo Methodianism for the people of north - eastern Moravia were often bound up within the overall national concept.

Many Moravians viewed these as Moravian ideas which, though certainly popular among all the Slays, had germinated in the soil of Moravia.

Cyrilo - Methodianism especially was promoted as part of a Moravian national concept. The people of north - eastern Moravia had traditionally expressed feelings of solidarity with other Slays. A popular enthusiasm for the Russian nation and people was widespread among the Slavic population of north - eastern Moravia in the 19th century.(33) This cannot be explained solely by the limited cultural exchanges that took place between these two areas in recent times prior to the 20th century. Individual Moravians, of course, expressed different feelings about the Pan Slavic aspect of national identity.

Some were indifferent to this; those who were not, however, were often noted for their passionate enthusiasm for this idea.

The enthusiasm of the Czech Moravian of Texas for Pan - Slavism was often no more than a vague feeling of solidarity with other Slays, especially with those Slay s who suffered at the hands of the Germans.

Czech - Moravians in Texas enjoyed friendly if not close relations with the other two large Slavic immigrant communities in Texas, the Poles and Wends (Lusatian Sorbs), although Czech - Moravians generally maintained more intimate and practical ties with the geograhically closer German immigrant community in Texas. Yet sympathy for the characteristic Moravian Pan - Slavic idea was exhibited by many Czech Moravians in Texas. It is interesting to note that the name of the Czech Moravian fraternal organization SPJST translates as the "Slavonic

Benevolent Order of the State of Texas." That Czech - Moravians gave this name to one of their important fraternal organizations probably indicates more their reservation at calling themselves Czech or Bohemain than it does any conscious expression of Pan - Slavic sympathies. This nevertheless indicates something of the validity of the concept of a Slavic Moravian national identity for Czech Moravians of Texas.(34) In the early decade of the 1950s, Catholic Czech Moravians initiated the organization of an annual Sts. Cyril and Methodius Day in Houston, in which Czech Moravians, Poles, Ukrainians and other Slays of the Western and Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church participate. Something of the typical 19th century Moravian Pan - Slavic idea is evident in this event, where the individual Slavic national interests are subordinated to a broad Slavic idea.

Similar events are not found in the North, where larger and more diverse Slavic populations are concentrated in many cities and metropolitan areas.

Although enthusiasm for Cyrilo Methodianism has been more evident in Texas in the Roman Catholic communities, it should be noted that in Moravia Cyrilo - Methodianism was more a national idea and a patriotic movement than a cult promoted by the Catholic Church. Quite a few of the German and Hungarian clergy sought to discourage devotion to Cyril and Methodius among their Slavic flocks.(35) In some ways the Cyrilo Methodianism of north - eastern Moravia differs from the 19th century movement which drew criticism from Tomag G. Masaryk and others, although it must be admitted that a prominent feature of this cult among north - eastern Moravians was the same Slavic mysticism which Masaryk, Karel Havlfeek 'Borovskk and other Czechs denounced.(36) Some Moravian promoters of Cyrilo Methodianism displayed an interest in Russian Orthodoxy; others petitioned the Roman Catholic Church for a Slavic liturgy or a liturgy in the vernacular.(37) Some Moravians viewed the Hussites as spiritual heirs and historical descendants of the mission of Cyril and Methodius.(38) Ir the 19th century many of the most passionate political manifestations which occurred in Moravia were related to some form of veneration of Cyril and Methodius.(39) 33. For many Catholic and Orthodox Slays of the 19th century, the Pan Slavic and Cyrilo - Methodian ideas were two sides of the same coin. These :wo aspects of the national concept of Czech - Moravians of Texas have been mentioned separately because they are much more evident among the Czech Moravians than among other Czech Americans and other Sla ys in America.

The national character which was expressed in the religious life of the Roman Catholic Czech - Moravian is poorly understood without some understanding of the Moravian's enthusiasm for Cyrilo - Methodianism.

Of course, the national character of the Czech - Moravian Brethren Church in Texas is at once evident,(40) yet the national character of the Roman Catholic's Church, based in large part upon the national and religious ideas of Cyrilo - Methodianism, is less easily understood. It took Roman Catholics several generations to establish a national character within the multi cultural Roman Catholic Church.

Roman Catholic Czech - Moravians had to first win the trust of the American clergy, then build their own churches, which they dedicated to their national patrons, and, finally, they had to establish their own national religious traditions on the soil of Texas. More Roman Catholic churches were dedicated in Texas to Sts. Cryil and Methodius, the patron saints of Moravia, than anywhere else in America. Hardly a single Roman Catholic settlement did not have some organization named after Cyril and Methodius.(41) Distinct traces of Moravian Cyrilo - Methodianism, an idea characterized by a national enthusiasm and mystical religiosity more akin to the Polish or Russian temperment than to the Bohemian, have been evident in Texas. The Roman Catholic Czech - Moravian never quite divorced his religious feeling from a passionate national allegiance to the idea of Cyril° Meth° dianism .(42) In the common attitude towards organized religion the Czech Moravian of Texas differed from most other Czech - Americans. The majority of Czech - American immigrants had been communicants of the Roman Catholic Church in Europe, yet, once in America, they often ceased this affiliation and for the most part did not join other religious denominations. actually exist a single standardized form of this dialect which is spoken in far northeastern Moravia and southeastern Silesia.(52) Although Lachian dialect can vary distinctly from village to village, there are several characteristics which distinguish it generally from Bohemian and even neighboring Moravian dialects: a primary accent on the penultimate syllable, as in Polish;(53) an absence of "lengthened" vowels, which are characteristic of Bohemian speech; and a palatilazation of the syllables "de," "ne" and "te." Certain elements of Lachian dialect differ quite remarkably from the speech of Bohemia. Some of the more unusual elements of Lachian survive today in Texas; printed and written evidence shows that many of the more unique elements of Lachian dialect have not survived in Texas, however.(54) Traces of several other Moravian, Bohemian and Silesian dialects are also evident in Texas. Early immigrants employed the vocabulary and grammatical forms of the dialect of their native region and these various dialects were often used side - by - side.

The speech of the Czech - Moravian community of Texas has actually undergone a significant degree of evolution in the past century. There exist today obvious differences between the literary Czech language of modern - day Czechoslovakia and the hybrid form of "Czech" which is still spoken throughout the state of Texas.

This has made for some confusion on the part of descendants of Czech Moravian immigrants who study the modern literary Czech language.(55) 46. A study of the speech of the Czech - Moravian community of Texas as a form of Lachian dialect would be all the more valuable since Lachian dialect in Czechoslovakia today is rapidly receding before the official Czech language. A correspondent commented on the influence of the common spoken Moravian in NASINEC (Granger, Texas) September 21, 1984, p. 4, col. 1: "Moje matka, pochazela z Cermne. Byla prava eeska, ale ona zapomela pesky mluvit, naueila se mluvit moraysky.

55. Modern speakers of the language of Bohemia and the "Czech" language of Texas are immediately conscious of some of the differences between these two languages. Bohemian, with its "lengthened" vowels and Lachian, accented on the penultimate syllable, sound quite different.

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: prvni pad— answers the questions: KDO— who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO— what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

DATIVE Case— tieti pad, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone.

It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and CEMU?, to what?

Ex.: Komu pi§eK? Pau domu tatinkovi. (Tatinkovi here is in the dative case). Cemu poslouchag Posloucham vysilaci stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case).

4. ACCUSATIVE, or Direct object case— &vrt r pad; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: KOHO? whom?, and CO what?

Co tam vidig? Vidim moji matku. (matku is in the acc. case) 5. VOCATIVE Case— patY pad— is used for addressing or calling to a person or a thing.

Pfed 14 lety se zrodila jedna z nejzajimavej gich divadelnich pfehlidek v Ceskoslovensku - pfehlidka vesnickYch divadelnich souborft v podkrkono g skem Vysokem nad Jizerou. U jejiho zrodu stab Svaz drulstevnich rolniku, jehol pfedstavitele si uvedomovali, jak viznam ma arnaterske divadlo pro livot na vesnici. Uvedomovali si v gak take obtanost prate vesnickych souborfi a to, ze se jim vet ginou nedafilo zucastnit se vYznamnej'g ich narodnich ci celostatnich pfehlidek.
