Lodge 49, Rowena Holds Successful Project For the past nine years, these industrious Rowena area ladies have been involved in an ambitious project for the Texas State Festival of Ethnic Cultural Arts and Crafts Show in Ballinger. They make kolache, a Czechoslovakian pastry, to sell at the Czech booth at the Ethnic Festival.

The Supreme Lodge has authorized a domino tournament for all SPJST members 18 years and older. There will

home who furnished her kitchen, her cooking, utensils and her utilities. This year, under Mrs. Tomlinson's leadership, the crew made over 200 dozen kolache and netted a profit of $1,130 for their SPJST Lodge No. 49 in Rowena. In addition to the kolache, Minnie Pavlicek made 50 packages of egg noodles for the festival.

The games will be held at different times enabling members to participate in both types of play. The first part of the tournament will be held at the local lodge level with the winners advancing to the state playoffs at a site yet to be determined.

We believe that this will be a great opportunity for lodge members to come together for fun and relaxation.

seem to be focused more on collecting bonuses than on business needs.

The IRS is considering a ruling to treat the bonuses as a taxable fringe benefit. The bonuses almost certainly will be considered taxable if they are sold. ***

Your editor calls your attention to the minutes of the last quarterly meeting in this issue and the letters from our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar pertaining to the domino tournament which he and the minutes refer to. Please read what is proposed and we feel certain that many of our "straight" and "42" domino player members will be interested. We will have more details on this in forthcoming issues. ***

Adults who adopt more than one "special needs" child have gotten a break from the Internal Revenue Service. The service has ruled that parents can take an itemized deduction of up to $1,500 for qualified adoption expenses for each special - needs child -- one whose medical or emotional handicap, age or ethnic background has made it difficult for him or her to be placed. Previously, it was unclear whether the deduction was permitted for each child or whether only one deduction could be taken for all such children in a family. ***

In this issue is the annually published directory of the seven (7) district and all lodge secretaries (their names, addresses and telephone numbers). You will, very probably, wish to save this issue for reference when you may need it, however, you will notice that Supreme Lodge Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska notes that not ALL lodges have sent in the names of their secretary for 1985.

The Bylaw Article 95(d) Brother Mikeska refers to reads: In the month of May, the "Vestnik" shall publish the names and addresses of the district and local lodge secretaries.

The directory used to be published in February each year, but, was changed in one convention to wait until all districts had their spring meetings and lodges had their annual meetings and elected their secretary. ***

Those airline frequent - flier plans so popular with business travelers are beginning to attract some unwanted attention -- from employers and the Internal Revenue Service.

Nearly every airline now has a program offering free flights, hotels, rental cars and even cruises to business people who fly a minimum number of miles with the sponsoring carrier.

In many plans, a traveler who logs as few as 10,000 miles with the same airline can upgrade his or her seat on the next flight from coach to first class at no extra charge. A traveler who flies 150,000 miles or more can often claim two free first - class tickets to Europe, the Middle East or Asia.

The plans are attractive that many travelers change their itineraries to accommodate them. Where once they might have flown nonstop from, let's say, Chicago to Atlanta, they now take "milk train" routes with stops in smaller cities along the way to build up mileage.

Brokers are buying up the bonus coupons from plan members and reselling them at discount. While this is legal, airlines don't like it, and some have warned coupon brokers to stop advertising.

Travelers caught using somebody else's coupons can be forced to pay the full fare. And, although it rarely happens, plan members who sell their coupons can be kicked out of the program.

More and more employers -becoming aware of the high value of the bonuses -- are claiming them as company property. Some airlines have programs in which the bonuses go directly to the employers. Many firms also are checking for itineraries that

Families planning yard sales may wish to check their homeowner's insurance policies to make sure they will be covered in case somebody is hurt on the property during a sale, urges the Insurance Information Institute. Most policies extend liability coverage to events related to normal, nonbusiness, residential activities -including occasional yard sales.

Regularly scheduled, profit - making activities, such as sales of homemade craft items, probably are not covered. ***

Be skeptical of bargain prices offered by street vendors, flea markets and other fly - by - night sales operations, say Better Business Bureaus. If a price is incredibly low -- $50 for a $1,000 watch, for example -- you can bet it is either counterfeit or stolen. To spot counterfeits: Check trademarks and 14bels to see if they match the real thing. Look closely at the quality of the packaging. A poor printing job is often a giveaway that the item is phony. ***

Regularly rotating the tires on cars and light trucks can make the tires last a lot longer, especially if the vehicles are equipped with front - wheel drive, according to tire experts at Goodyear.

Front tires on front - wheel - drive vehicles take an extra beating because they are used both for steering and driving -- and they also must carry the weight of the engine and transmission.

Safety experts recommend rotating the tires at between 6,000 and 8,000 miles and again between 18,000 and 24,000 miles of use.

Consumers are being asked not to buy any kind of telephone that is not compatible with hearing aids. Most hearing aids contain a special component to facilitate use of the telephone, but many telephones are not capable of transmitting sound through this component, warns the nonprofit Organization for Use of the Telephone. For details, write OUT, P.O. Box 175, Owings Mills, Md. 21117. ***

Adding a fiberglass insulation blanket around your water heater could cut your annual electric bill by 400 kilowatt - hours, saving you about $40 per year, advises the Energy Dept.

If you have a gas water heater, the insulation blanket would save about 36 therms, worth about $25 per year. ***

In April we passed our second anniversary of partnership with the Department of Human Resources to prevent child abuse neglect through support of the Children's Protective Services Program. Recently, I received a copy of a report written by Harolyn Moreau, the Regional Volunteer Specialist, summarizing the accomplishments of the lodges which have been reported in the Vestnik.

Although we realize that not all efforts have been reported, we feel that you will gain insight into the value and significance of your efforts as they have been viewed on a statewide basis.

I am hoping that these facts will serve to spark enthusiasm for and pride in the contributions which the local lodges are making every day in their communities.

During the past two years 44 lodges have been actively involved in the child abuse neglect program. These lodges have hosted or attended 43 programs on child abuse/neglect, Department of Human Resources, and the need for volunteers. Our members have contributed cash totaling $20,346.51 statewide. Other donations include food, clothes, toys, diapers, car seats, shelter equipment, school supplies, baseball caps, microwave oven, clothes dryers, paint, furniture, kitchen equipment and have contributed their bingo money on a regular basis to support the emergency shelters. If we place a monetary value on the above donations we can definitely see that our members have contributed a large amount of money to this very important project, but, even more important is the care and concern for the individual needs that have been met.

Lodge members have also donated their time to serve on child welfare boards and have conducted community awareness fairs. We feel that these fairs have educated our members and the public and raised an awareness of this program.

I am pleased to say that one district has 22 active lodges who have hosted or attended 21 programs that reached over 16,709 people. These lodges have made cash contributions totaling $7,858.51.

The Supreme Lodge has co sponsored the Regional Network Children Conference held March 25 27, 1985 in Austin, which was attended by over 600 professionals working with Texas children in substitute living arrangements. The majority of these children were from homes where severe abuse and/or neglect has occurred.

All of the above programs have reached approximately 39,000 people.

We think our members have shown a great deal of sensitivity to this important project. Your continued effort in the protection of children means a great deal to our Society as we attempt to broaden our fraternal commitment to one another and our communities.

Exerpts From Minutes Of The Second Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST At The Home Ofice In Temple, Texas.

The meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. April 9, 1985 with all Supreme Lodge members present.

The Supreme Lodge met informally the day before the meeting to review plans for future growth and progress of the Society. A representative from the Statue of Liberty restoration project was also present to discuss SPJST involvement in that patriotic project.

MINUTES The minutes of the January 8 - 10, 1985 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and accepted as presented.

REPORTS The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged to be filed for record on motion duly adopted.

OLD BUSINESS NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS - Reports were heard from President Leshikar and Chairman Pokladnik regarding the recent NFCA Section meetings. Some of the more important ideas reviewed dealt with communications and motivation of Society membership.

Report was made that only 30 complete freshmen scholarship

Wednesday, May 15, 1985—VESTNIK/5 applications and packets were received out of 110 packets mailed out. It was agreed that scholarships be awarded to the 30 qualified applicants who submitted their applications by March 31, 1985.

DELINQUENT LOANS Recommendations on delinquent loans were considered and approved on motion duly passed.

FIRST QUARTER INVESTMENTS - The investments as listed were ratified on motion duly adopted and the minutes of Supreme Lodge officers' meetings were approved.

PREMIUM REFUNDS/PAID - UP ADDITIONS - A report was made on the paidup additions option and implementing the inserter/stuffer for mailing of premium refund checks and other large mailings.

Recess for lunch was taken.

RAMP/Flag Pole - During the previous meeting it was decided to have plans and specifications prepared for a ramp to allow easy access to the Home Office building by elderly members and handicapped persons.

Three bids were obtained anti the low bidder was J.L. Vanicek Construction, Inc. After discussion a motion was adopted to authorize the Supreme Lodge officers to enter into a contract with the low bidder.

LOCAL LODGE, DUES - Decision was reached that the matter of local lodge dues is a local matter in both group bill and direct bill lodges.

PURCHASE OF LOT - Purchase of the lot adjoining our property next to the City Recreational Center was approved.

NEW BUSINESS SPJST CALENDAR - A motion was adopted to secure bids for a 1986 SPJST calendar.

WASHINGTON MEETING Director Pokladnik was authorized to attend a meeting on taxation in Washington, D.C. LAM - It was agreed to open the museum Saturdays during June, July and August.

INFORMAL AREA MEETINGS It was agreed to authorize informal sales representatives' meetings on a trial basis to promote better communication.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:35 p.m. until 9 a.m. April 10, 1985.

NEW EQUIPMENT - Purchase of a needed Pitney Bowes copier was approved.

GAMES - The Fraternal Activities Committee recommended a Domino/42 tournament to promote fellowship and fraternalism. Proposed rules and information were reviewed and discussed. On motion duly passed, the recommendation of the committee on the Domino/42 tournament was approved.

CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATION - After discussion, it was decided to mail a form letter to educational institutions providing information on the availability of funds for teaching of the Czech language. A request would be required from each institution for 1985 - 86.

It was agreed to pay the sum of $300 to each of the following: Flatonia High School, St. John High School and Alief High School.

The sum of $1,000 was allocated to be used to purchase resource material and supplies for teaching the Czech language. The plans are to build a library of Czech teaching material.

SESQUICENTENNIAL Recommendation was heard to sponsor and fund a 30 - minute film covering Czech history and culture with a highlighting of the SPJST and the recommendation was approved.

TWENTY YEAR SERVICE AWARD - Norma Andel was invited into the Supreme Lodge Meeting. She was congratulated on achieving 20 years of devoted service to the SPJST in the Home Office. In appreciation for her good service to the Society, she was presented with a plaque and a cash award and commended on her service involvement and professionalism.

LOAN APPLICATIONS/ANNUITY INTEREST RATE - Recommendation was heard and the following motion was adopted: (1) Set the mortgage loan rate to members at 121/2 percent. (2) Continue to consider acceptable loan applications from all areas of Texas without regard to any district allocation with the understanding that the Supreme Lodge officers have the authority to discontinue accepting mortgage applications if too many are received. (3) Set the annuity interest rate at 11 percent for the period from April 30, 1985 through July 31, 1985.

COMMUNICATING WITH LOCAL LODGES - A local lodge newsletter to be mailed to local lodges was recommended and considered.

The newsletter was to be jointly prepared by the Supreme Lodge officers and intended to foster better communication with the local lodges.

The recommendation was approved on motion duly passed.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR SYD Sue Meadows was invited to the Supreme Lodge meeting to present a report. She referred to her written report and discussed various plans.

Her report will be filed for record.

Recess for lunch was taken.

The SYD was authorized to attend a SMU sponsored management seminar in Austin.

VESTNIK ADVERTISING Report was made that a member had requested that the Vestnik be opened to commercial advertising. The matter was considered and tabled.

The July Supreme Lodge meeting was scheduled for July 8 - 10, 1985.

There being no further business, Chairman Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 2:05 p.m.

6, Cottonwood Meeting Lodge

The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 was held May 5, 1985 at 3 p.m. President Robert Dobecka called upon Lynette Hykel, Keith Hykel and Tammi Dobecka to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lynette then recited the SPJST Pledge.

Roll call of officers was called with Vice President Rose Uptmor being absent. There were 19 members present.

All reports were in order.

Correspondence was read from the Westfest Corporation and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. She thanked everyone who helped in any way with

the Easter program and Easter egg hunt. The youth made items for Mother's Day. The youth elected officers and they are: President -Lynette Hykel, Vice President -Shirley Dobecka, Secretary -- Kevin Dobecka, Treasurer -- Keith Hykel, and Reporter -- Tammi Dobecka.

Michelle Mach brought the birthday cake. Kevin Dobecka participated in the West Sokol Gymnastic Slet and won first place in marching and placed second in all the other events.

Board of Trustees' report was given

by Brother George Straten. The picnic was discussed and Brother Johnnie Krizan gave a report on the changes in the insurance that SPJST has to offer.

Door prizes drawn were $10 -Ricky Mahan (not present), $10 -Harry Svacek, Sr. (not present). The $5 door prize was won by Sister Willie Mae Schuetz and the $2 door prize was won by L.B. Dobecka.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be held May 31st at 8 p.m. and the regular lodge meeting will be Sunday, June 2nd at 3 p.m.

Benefit Dance Set

By Victoria County SPJST Lodges Victoria Lodge No. 32, Placedo Lodge No. 97, and Inez Lodge No. 143 will hold a battle dance with the Vanek Brothers Band and Bill and The Outlaws providing entertainment for the Child Abuse Prevention Alliance.

The benefit occasion will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at the Country Inn on the Bloomington Highway. The admission will be $4 per person, and ALL proceeds will go to the Child Abuse Prevention Alliance of Victoria.

Announcing Lodge 33 Bleiberville Annual Event The annual spring Fish Fry will take place Sunday, May 19, 1985 at the Bleiblerville SPJST Hall located on FM 2502.

There will be fried fish sold to go from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Serving will begin at 11:30 a.m.; served for the noon meal will be fish, catsup, bread, potato chips and coleslaw for $4.50 per adult and $2.25 per child.

We will have pastries and refreshments available.

In addition to the day's activities, a dance will be held from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. with music by the Ramblers; admission to the dance will be $3 per person.

47, Seaton Honors '85 Graduates Lodge

The May 5th meeting of Lodge 47, was called to order by President Jerry Pechal at 2 p.m. Flagbearers Tim Wilson and Michael Morris presented the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The meeting was then turned over to Rosie Craft who introduced the 1985 graduates. From Temple High School we had Shane Patterson and Emily Vacha, from Troy there was Kimberly Craft, and from Rogers High School there were Billy Joe Billeck, Lisa Haverland, Nikki Vasek, Stephany Mikeska and Gary Hutka. Shane Patterson and Gary Hutka were unable to attend. The graduates received a cake, a mug with their name and their school's name and a check.

Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. spoke to the graduates and membership.

President Pechal then recognized the following visitors, namely, Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Frank Bradley and the Lonnie Schroeder family. We welcome you all and hope you enjoyed s our meeting and fellowship.

Roll call showed all officers present and each gave good reports. There were 14 sales representatives present and 4 absent.

Ann Koon read the minutes of the last meeting and acknowledged the following correspondence. We received thank you notes from the Ella Pechal family and Annie Jakubec, a letter from the Supreme Lodge about the SPJST Scholarships (Laura Hejl and Beth Jez are the recipients from Lodge No. 47). Our congratulations to both of you!

We received letters from SL President Howard Leshikar recognizing the lodge on their $100 donation to Crime Stoppers and about the domino tournament to be held in the fall, and requests from American Heart Association, and from St. Jude Children's Hospital. The membership voted to send $25 to the Heart Association and $15 to St. Jude.

New members signed up in April are Timothy Gene Wells, Lisa L. Gregar, Wade Alan Mikulas, Shawna Lee Dudley, Britnie Marie Dudley, Josephine J. Cordial, Eugene Vaculin, Lanita Anglin, and Gus Leschber. We had one transfer in, Mary Leschber.

We want to welcome all of you into our membership and hope to see you at the meetings. We also had two transfers out, Karen and Ronnie Mihatsch.

It seems there is always someone not feeling well so we hope all of you will be feeling fine soon. They are Annie Jakubec, Bill Kotrla, J.W. Pechal, Jr., J.D. Lesikar, Edward Mares, Evelyn Heese, Frank Shenkir, Ottmar Eichmann and James Kortis.

President Pechal recognized all the mothers in attendance and wished them all a "Happy Mother's Day".

Dan Balusek gave a report on the work being done on the hall. The painting has been finished and the work on the west and north walls will begin this week.

Brother Pechal thanked everyone who helped with the work done on the outside entrance of the hall. The old planter boxes were torn down and will be replaced with new ones.

We want to say thanks to Adeline Kohutek for the beautiful individual cakes for the graduates and to Preston Pagel for the use of the lovely floral centerpiece.

Brother Jerry Ermis Of Lodge 88 presented a check from Lodge 88, Houston for $300 to Mr. Tom Kidd, director of Residential Services of Covenant House of Houston while Homer Alexander, chairman of the Abused Children Committee, and Marceil Malek, Lodge 88 secretary observe.

This activity is a very healthy organization for the Houston community in that it provides a home for all indigent, abused, and underprivileged children who may seek assistance in straightening out their lives; so many of these youngsters have been sexually abused, beaten, and even tortured by their parents that they had no alternative but to run away from home.

At this point in their young lives they become so - called STREET PEOPLE who, in order to eat and have shelter for their battered bodies, must sell their bodies into prostitution so that they may survive.

This is the lowest form of degradation within our human society today, yet this actually happens and does, in fact, exist right here in our own backyard of life.

Those of us who are unaware that these kinds of atrocities do actually exist are in for a rude awakening.

How can we who are so richly endowed deny giving financial assistance to such a wondrous organization as the Covenant House of Houston and other similar organizations?

The Child Abuse Committee of Lodge 88 Pokrok would like to dedicate itself to the support of such organizations that want to help these children. Other such organizations in the Houston area are being "eyed" for financial support from Lodge 88.

If you may have experienced any similar abuse within your own life and subsequently pulled yourself up by your own boot straps it certainly must have been with . the support and generosity of others.

This letter is meant mostly for the youth of Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 in Pasadena. We have 70 youth members eligible to belong to the youth club.

Some of you may not know that there is money allocated by the Supreme Lodge and districts for various youth activities. The money goes directly to the youth club. The various lodges do not get any of this money. There are activities the youth may participate in, such as camp in the summer. Here in Houston and Pasadena, the youth are even taken to Astroworld and also could possibly go to other functions. It would all depend on the amount of money available.

Parents, you should see to it that your child belongs. It costs you nothing and it could build character, citizenship, well being and may make a better person out of them (fraternalism), so please try to belong.

There is a letter out to all youth members, so be looking for it.

We at Lodge 172, also could and would "spring" for some cash for the youth club.

There will be a garage sale in June 1985 (exact date not known) but we will let you know, later, so bring your items to the lodge. They will be taken care of from there.

By the time this will be in print, the Travis Shannon Benefit will be over with and, as of now, it is going over big. I will let you know the final figure later.

In 1986 we're going to change the format for our society a little bit.

There will be one covered dish social and barbecue social. This will be for both members and guests. The only thing will be free is dance to members and price of dance ticket to guests. As of now the price of dance tickets is not set, but it won't be much. I would like to see us have more covered dish meals even possibly on Saturday. It is a very good way to get together, visit, eat, drink and socialize. Please show me some other people than the Czech, Moravian, Slovak, Polish, and

German, who like to socialize more and those who would like to be.

Everything here is going good; the weather has been nice and warm with some rain early in April but now we could use some rain. We missed the bad weather, thank God. The crops are a little late but coming along nicely; the gardens all look beautiful including yards and flowers.

180, Burleson April Meeting

The SPJST Lodge 180 of Burleson meeting was convened April 16 at 7:30 p.m. by President Louis Grochoske leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also remembering our departed sisters and brothers with a moment of silence.

Minutes of the last meeting were approved as read.

There was a lengthy discussion on direct billing with its advantages and disadvantages, and no decision was made.

We, the members and friends, wish to thank Mydell and Louis Grochoske for a lovely 35th wedding anniversary party. Everyone had a great time, and certainly there was plenty of good food, dancing and fellowship. I got to meet and talk to the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge. To Mydell and Louis we can say "A party well done!" and many more happy years.

I also had the privilege of attending the Red Ranger School reunion held May 5th at Lodge No. 24, Cylcone, Texas. For me it was a great pleasure to see and talk to friends I haven't seen in 53 years, also got to visit with some of the teachers, one I shall always remember, Laura Marek Sula. What pleasure it was to visit with you. I certainly want to thank the committee for getting the reunion together and who worked so hard to invite and organize everything. It was like going home to Mother's; you were greeted so warmly and also with a cup of coffee and plenty of kolache. I had the privilege of having four brothers and four sisters and myself in attendance; one sister was unable to attend. We, the Simmank family, were all students at Red Ranger School; the committee recognized us as the largest family group present at the reunion. The covered dish dinner turned out great with plenty of homemade sausage, turkey and dressing and you name it, it was there. If you didn't find something you liked or wanted it can't be had.

Thank you "Committee" and I am happy to report that a few people from this area attended the Ennis Polka Festival. To mention a few, Louis and Mydell Grochoske, George and Kitty Rippin, Frank and Josephine Prochaska, Jeff and Natalie Malley, Ladd Malley and several others.

Our get well wishes to all who are convalescing.

Our next meeting will be May 21st at 7:30 p.m. The attendance prize was won by Joyce Russell and the meeting adjourned to coffee and cake.

Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of the lodge was held March 9 at 3:30 p.m. The officers' reports were given followed by the announcement of a new member, Gloria Junek.

At this time our guests were introduced, namely, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Trcalek and Sgt. Ernest Montoya. Mr. Trcalek spoke to the membership about the new direct billing system and how it would work.

At this point it was decided that the lodge will make a decision on what they will do or contribute to the Child Abuse program in the community at the next meeting. Sgt. Montoya was then brought forward as the guest speaker. He is a member of the Bryan Police Dept. He spoke to the members about child abuse and the forms of it.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the next meeting at 3:30 p.m. June 9th at the KC Hall.

Wednesday, May 15, 19$5—VESTNIK/7 Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond are Dorothea Bockhorn, Frank Richardson, Minnie Schulz and Walter Schulz. We are sorry to hear Frances Hlavaty and Gilbert Randermann are hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital and wish them a speedy recovery.

We regret the loss of James Sample and Elek Sulak. James and Elek will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Congratulations to Janie Martinez on her 20th wedding anniversary on April 17, 1985.

The Senior Citizen luncheons given by the Immanuel United Church of Christ and St. Michael's Catholic Church was attended by Tony Ondracek, Marie Bertram, Martha Stuchly, Betty Lehmann, Moody Flagg and Annie Stavinoha. The Senior Citizen social held at the Methodist Church was attended and enjoyed by Tony Ondracek, Albina Foroi, Martha Wleczyk, Betty Lehmann, Annie Zich, Emma Tielke and Annie Stavinoha.

The KCs came to play bingo Tuesday evening, April 2nd and April 23rd with the residents. The residents had a grand time.

Monday morning, April 15, the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Tuesday morning, April 16, residents Martha Wleczyk, Tony Ondracek, Moody Flagg, Louise Janc, Minnie Graeber, Mary Elva Lindsay, Martha Stuchly and Marie Bertram, also Martha Marx (social activity director), Paul Legendre (volunteer) and Aurora Longoria (LVN) enjoyed going to Brenham to view the beautiful bluebonnets.

-sday evening, April 24, the Brazos Bottom Belles and Beaus entertained by square dancing for the group. Refreshments were served.

Everyone enjoyed the evening.

Thursday morning, April 25, Paul Legendre displayed his Stamp Collection and gave a talk on it.

• Friday afternoon, April 26, the residents who enjoyed being in the parade were Tony Ondracek, Moody Flagg, Francis Jacob, Betty Lehmann, Albina Foroi, Mary Ann Spezia and Annie Stavinoha. The staff enjoyed Western Day by dressing in their western attire.

"Happy Birthday" celebrants for the month of April were residents Eddie C. Schulz, Harmon Matula, Mattie Mesecke, Elvie Woytek and Rose M. Hatchett, and staff celebrants included Inez Martinez, Dorothy Lipinski, Donna Holik, Mary Ann Armstead, Minnie McNeal, Sophie L. Cario, Yolanda G. Tafolla and Vanessa L. Thuesen.

The birthday party held April 29 included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to favorite music. The "A Flower and Gift Shop" provided corsages and boutonnieres. The Methodist church ladies provided the cakes. Lydia Hortmon also brought a cake; Melva Hastings, Bertha Ross and Lydia Hortmon served coffee, punch, cake and ice cream to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all the church denominations in the area for giving services and communion, als6 to the volunteers who performed services to the residents for the month of April.

From The District Youth Counselors District II Summer Youth Activities' Schedule The following are important dates for all leaders and youth members plus all members in District II. Please mark these dates and plan to be present at these activities. Detailed reports on each activity will be printed at a later date.

May 31 -- is the date of all names of qualified youth who may attend camp to be sent to DYC. June 24 -- All YAD entry blanks for crafts, individual talent, group talent and royalty (including autobiography) are due; send to DYC. July 14 -- YAD VERY IMPORTANT DAY! All youth ages 6 through 17 who qualify , are eligible to participate. YAD will be held at Lodge Ao. 18, Elgin. Let's all go to Elgin on this day and enjoy the talent, crafts and royalty and support the youth of your area.

July 14 -- Camp application forms due to DYC on this day.

August 2, 3, 4 & 5 -- Teenage Camp at Camp Val Verde beginning at 10 a.m. with lots of excitement, fun, and sports with your friends. Plan to be there!

August 5, 6, 7 & 8 -- Junior Camp beginning at 10:30 a.m. This will be a great experience with lots of fun, lots of activities. See you there!

August 11 District II Fall Meeting at Lodge 29, Taylor with lots of

activities planned.

August 18 -- STATE YAD in Temple at the Convention Center. An improved sound system is planned.

September 29 Districtwide Six Flags trip is planned and you must participate in summer activities to be eligible.

Remember that there will be more detailed information on each activity published in the Vestnik before each activity.

A visit is also planned to your youth club. Bring your questions to this meeting; all activities will be discussed in detail.

The birthday cake was brought by Mechele Mach for May. Keith Hykel will bring a cake for June.

Donations for the month of May were cakes to the West Rest Haven, money to Cancer Fund, and items for door prizes to the mothers. The youngsters also made corsages for mothers.

Their first topic discussed was pertaining to going bowling, however, they will set a date Friday when they plan to go bowling.

April 3, 1985 the youth club had a meeting. They made Bunny cakes and dyed eggs. The youth had fun. April 4 we sold all the Bunny cakes and a few dozen eggs.

We have five new members. Their names are Danny and Donny Berryhill, Matthew Madry, Glencora and her sister Gwyn.

Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Club Outing Dear Readers, Our youth club held its monthly meeting Sunday, May 5th. We discussed our trip -to New Braunfels and what time we will be leaving. We all are to meet at Renea's house at 6:30 and bring a sack lunch and we will eat supper on the road.

The door prizes were won by Brian Faust and Denise Holubec.

Our craft , for the day was making name buttons for us to wear to camp which is only a few weeks away. I hope to see lots of old friends at camp.

Our candy sales have been steady but we still have more to sell. Our day ended with a potluck supper with the adults.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club News May 1, 1985 we had our youth club meeting. We talked about our cake sale for the Bunny cakes. We made a lot of money. Everyone enjoyed working.

Mrs. Stayton told us to start getting ready for YAD and camp. YAD will be held July 28 at Lodge 88. Mrs. Pflughaupt said to start our projects, now. Forms for YAD will be handed out in the June meeting and have to be turned in by July 3rd. Camp will be at Camp Lone Star, July 21st to 24th.

Forms for camp will also be handed out in the June meeting. They have to be handed in before July 1, 1985.

Mrs. Pflughaupt said that we have been invited to dance at Czech Day in Victoria, June 29th. All Beseda

dancers will be going. We will dance two times in one day. We will be having practice, soon.

The youth will be having a beauty contest and a fish pond booth on Splash Day, held June 2nd.

LODGE J. "LUKE" LUCAS, age 84 years, who passed away in Tomball, Texas, following a lengthy illness.

Brother Lucas was born June 28, 1900, in Shiner, Texas to Louis Lucas and Theresa Hurta Lucas. He attained his education at the University of Texas. He was a schoolmaster in a one - room schoolhouse at Rocky Gonzales County. He also worked for Houston Natural Gas and retired in 1965.

Funeral services for Brother Lucas were held Monday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in East Bernard with Rev. Robert Ross officiating. Interment was in the Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard.

Brother Lucas was a member of the First Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Shriners.

He was liked by everyone who knew him and a big asset to our community.

Survivors include his son, Jack Lucas and his wife, Joan, of Houston; one sister, Ella Davenport. of Houston; two grandchildren, Chip Shelton of East Bernard and Rex Allen Lucas of San Antonio; and two great grandchildren.

His wife, Florence "Otton" Lucas; a daughter, Kay; parents and one sister, Estelle Walker, preceded him in death.

Pallbearers were the East Bernard Masonic Lodge members.

In lieu of flowers and other remembrances, the family requests memorials be made to the First Methodist Church of East Bernard.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis - Dawson Funeral Home in East Bernard.

Brother Kopecky was a butcher and worked at the Minyard Food Stores for a number of years.

He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 84.

His favorite hobby was gardening.

Survivors include wife, Wanda Lynn Kopecky of Dallas; son, Richard Kopecky of Dallas; daughters, Vickie Kaatz of Angleton and Barbara Kopecky of Dallas; six grandchildren and one sister..

Rosary was recited Friday, April 12th at Sparkman Hillcrest Garland Road Chapel. Brother Sid Pokladnik presented the eulogy and also represented the SPJST Society.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Dallas, April 13th with Rev. Steven Thomas officiating. Interment was at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas.

JERRY JOE PECHAL, who passed away Saturday, April 27, 1985, in a local hospital. He was 62, and a prominent Temple businessman.

Brother Pechal was born in Seaton, Texas, the son of Anton and Rosie Kamas Pechal, who were early settlers of the area. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Temple and, in the late 1940s, established Pechal Cabinet Shop which he operated until the time of his death.

He married the former Edna Jean Vasek December 15, 1951, in Temple.

Mr. Pechal was a member of Temple Brethren Church where he served as elder and deacon and on the Branches Committee. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion and SPJST Lodge No. 87 in Temple.

Services for Brother Pechal were held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 29th at the Temple Brethren Church with the Reverend Mark Labaj officiating.

Survivors include his widow, Edna Jean Pechal of Temple; two daughters, Debra Pechal Johnson of Norfolk, Virginia and Kim Pechal Dillard of Temple; his mother, Rosie Pechal of Temple and a sister, Mrs. Louis W. (Miladie) Hejl of Temple.

Memorials were requested to be -nade to the Temple Brethren Church.

Sheffield Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of the arrangements.

Burial was held at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Zimni spanek Zima neni pro zviiata pfiznive obdobi. Teplota klesa, ,s potravou je to stale horti — nejlepti by bylo tento pochmurmy das nejak „pieskodit". Pied pfichodem obdobi zimniho spanku se termoregulator „vypne", telesna teplota velrm rychle klesa, dYchani se zvolnuje, latkova vVrnena tem& ustava a v okarn2iku, kdy se telesna teplota s teplotou okoli vyrovne, upadne zviie do hlubokeho spanku.

U studenokrevnVch nadchazi zimni spanek je gte rychleji. Bez jakychkoliv „termostatil" teplota jejich tela automaticky klesa s phchodem prvnich chladnVch dill a zviie usin g . Nekteii tvorove, kupiikladu ielvy, jsou tak velice zavisli na vnelg i teplote, 2r e druhy na severu spi dale net jejich pfibuzni piebVvajici jizneji. Zimni spanek je vzdy spojen s rizikern zmrznuti se teplota Vela kritickernu stupni, mohou teplokrevna zviiata zadit rychleji dVchat, upravit ko2e§inu, dostat tresavku — a to v'S'e bez pieruSeni spanku. Josef Hora byl v Ceskosiovensku jako prvni vyznamenan titulem "ndrodni umelec" a jeho pohfeb se stal skuteEnjr m plebiscitem lasky a dilvery, kterou Eeskjr narod k skromnemu basnikovi choval.

Mezi feint nazvy byl i titul "Struny ve vEtru" a Hordv basnickj r blaenec Franti gek Hrubin v knize pfiznaEne nazvane "Lasky" vzpomind, jak se v Praze na Vy g ehrade, kdy basnika pohnivali, zvedi vitr, jeho nejvlastnEj g iivel. Mnozi tehdy asi slyseli posledni ton, kterjr vydal basnikftv nastroj, a vzpornnEli si pfitom na jeho knihu, kterd v roce 1927, v dobe vrcholiciho poetickeho tfateni postavila pied souEasniky "ochromujici obraz Easu", do nehoi vse vpljrvd a z nth° vypl y' va.

Od tech dob 'vepsal Eas mnoho letokruh6 do kmene iivota, ale kaldf rok je to opet "Strom kvEtu", jak v roce 1920 nazval JOsef Hora svou druhou sbirku.
