Top Sales Representatives Honored The top 28 sales representatives of the SPJST were honored at a fun filled weekend at De Gray State Park Lodge in Hot Springs, Arkansas on March 29 - 31, 1985.

On the same weekend (May 4th and May 5th), Rosenberg Czech Fest will also celebrate two days at the fairgrounds south of Rosenberg, when numerous SPJST lodge members will participate from near and far (including the Czech Folk Dancers of West who were invited for their third performance). We wish the Rosenberg Chamber of Commerce a successful turnout and we hope to attend one of their Czech Fests.

We urge every member to read, very carefully, the article pertaining to "Questions and Answers to Paidup Additions" by SL Financial/Secretary Jerry Mikulas in this edition, because this information concerns your insurance policy and once you make your final decision , it CANNOT be changed because you decided to change your mind, again.

The information from Brother Mikulas' office is self - explanatory; and, if you do not understand it clearly, then we suggest you contact your local lodge officer and/or district director for clarification.

For the past few weeks you have been reading about a small child named (Travis Shannon) who will be needing a liver transplant to save his life. His parents were advised of the costly operation that they could not afford; in the meantime, the information spread quickly and Lodge 172 members at Pasadena opened their hearts to help the youngster by sponsoring a benefit dance for his operation with all proceeds going toward his operation(s).

The benefit dance will take place Sunday, May 5th from 2 to 8 p.m. with three country - western bands donating their time FREE. We hope this occasion will turn out to be a tremendous success. (For more information refer to the letter section.)

*** This being the last issue printed in April, it reminds us that there are two more district meetings scheduled within the Society; District I will be hosted by Lodge 17 at New Tabor's SPJST Hall, and District IV at St. Joseph's Hall in Slaton, Texas hosted

by Lodge 157, Lubbock, on the same day (April 28th).

At both locations the producing sales people will be presented their incentive checks by their district directors in behalf of the SPJST, for their achievements. We urge you to attend and extend a handshake to them (the sales representatives) for their efforts because they deserve recognition.

Saturday, May 4th Lodge 18 at Elgin will be taking an active part in this year May Fete festivities with lots of good food and plenty of entertainment for all ages, again.

Their members also volunteered to host the District II Youth Achievement Day, July 14th. (This editor remembers very well how royally they accommodated the public "with a packed house" when Moravanka from Czechoslovakia performed at their lodge, and we feel they will be ready to accommodate another large undertaking for the youth of their district.)

The general public will again have an opportunity to observe and review information on the Czech culture while attending the Polka Festival May 4th and May 5th at the SPJST Lodge 25 and SPJST Lodge 135/Sokol Ennis locations at Ennis. For over a decade the Ennis community in Ellis County has played important roles to promote their ancestors' heritage. Likewise the KC and KJT/KJZT Czech organizations participate and help promote the 2 - day celebration.

The Ennis community takes pride in their every day accomplishments and we commend them for their annual

Easter has come and gone and so has the IRS tax - filing deadline, April 15th! Your editor hopes that all of our members and readers have survived both of these occasions.

Of course, Easter is a celebration of the return of Spring and warmer weather (in the Northern Hemisphere of our Planet Earth) celebrated for over 5,000 years and IRS Reports are not nearly as old!

Listening to television (the day after April 15th), the announcer stated that a citizen brought his tax report to the Internal Revenue Office and his report showed that he owed over $200, so he handed them a "carpenter's hammer"with the comment: "This should take care of my bill because the Pentagon has been paying over $700 for this type of hammer!"

The announcer said that the IRS fined the person $500 for filing a "frivalous" report. He commented that possibly the person should have brought a "potty seat" because the Pentagon had been paying about $1,000 for them!

This is written for our young boys and their parents. There are so many of our young teenage boys who think that wearing a "black hat," "dipping snuff" and "riding a pickup" is very "Macho." Well, let this editor tell you this: Recently a mother on television testified that her teenage son had used a can and 1/2 of snuff everyday, even in school (where it was forbidden.) In school classes he could NOT spit so he swallowed the saliva and, finally, the snuff. At the age of 20, he developed cancer of the mouth and, then, his stomach; he died in his younger brother's arms. Is that what you "Macho" young men want? It is a filthy, sloppy habit and, if a girl has any self - respect, she surely would NOT want to kiss a young man who has potential cancer in his mouth.

Think about it!

Minutes Of District VI Spring Meeting Held March 24 Uncorrected

The spring meeting of District VI SPJST was held at the Moravia Parish Hall March 24, 1985 with Lodge No. 23 Moravia as host. The meeting was called to order by President Ardis Bacak at 1:15 p.m. Flag Bearer Chris Chudej led the pledge to the flag.

Lodge No. 23 President Albert Olsovsky welcomed everyone to the meeting with District President Bacak responding.

President Bacak then led everyone in a prayer in tribute to our seventy deceased members since the last spring meeting, especially past District VI President Frank Zabransky.

The youth program followed.

Victoria Youth Club sang, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," "London Bridge" and "This Old Man." Talton Youth Club had Lenice Kaspar doing a tap, dance and Jean Dorotik, Michelle Srubar and Linda Treumer performing a dance routine. El Campo - Hillje Youth Club performed three skits - I Know an Old Woman, The Ball Game, and News Story of the Year.

District Youth Counselor Janet Marek presented the following report.

There will be a training class in El Campo May 4th. Taiton will host the District VI YAD July 14th. Camp days at Bastrop State Park will be June 16th - 19th. Counselor Marek said she had

just returned from Camp Lone Star in La Grange. She introduced Sue Meadows, the new State Youth Director, who spoke a few words.

District Vice President Albert Olsovsky introduced the following guests: SL President Howard Leshikar, SYD Sue Meadows, and District VI 'Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta.

The roll call of lodges showed 12 lodges responding. All district officers answered the roll call of officers. The following standing committee members were absent: Leona Macha, Mike Ahlstrom and Jerome Hlavaty.

Minutes were read from the fall meeting and approved as corrected. A list of 50 - year members was read with one attending, William Berkovsky, Lodge 63, Sweet Home.

There was no correspondence.

District VI Treasurer Anton Kellner, Jr. reported there was a balance of $675.10 as of October 1st in the District Youth Fund. Expenses totaled $648.39, leaving a balance of $26.71 as of March 1st, 1985. In the General Expense Fund, there was a balance of $580.54 October 1st. Expenses totaled $195.00, leaving a balance March 1st, 1985 of $385.54.

District Director Matt Vanek gave his report. He welcomed everyone on behalf of the Supreme Lodge. He introduced his first grade teacher from Moravia, Mrs. Heiman, who was present at the meeting. Twelve sales representatives rose to be recognized.

Top salesman Frankie Vanek won the trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Director Vanek presented checks to the sales representatives. He reported that $426,000 worth of insurance has been sold thus far in 1985. Sales classes had been held in El Campo and Hallettsville explaining the new decreasing term and single premium policies. The SPJST has an IRA plan and six more sales representatives will be trained to present it. Director Vanek reminded everyone that they must return the card if they want to continue receiving the refund checks instead of the additional insurance.

The Supreme Lodge now has some advertising for the sales representatives and it may be obtained by contacting Bernie Gebala. Direct billing is in effect with the 8 percent refund still going back to the, lodge but the Supreme Lodge will not collect local dues. Anyone desiring direct billing should contact Jerry Mikulas. Director Vanek urged all lodges to get liability insurance. Loans for homes and farms were being made at 121/2 interest.

SPJST history books could still be purchased. Director Vanek concluded by presenting checks: $100 allocated for the YAD, $450 for the General Expense Fund, and $2,020.90 for the Youth fund for 5,774 certificates at $.35 (thirty five cents) each.

SL President Howard Leshikar brought greetings from the Home Office. He said that he had just attended the youth training retreat at Camp Lone Star and that the youth are very important. A very important issue facing all fraternals at the present time was the proposal by the federal government to tax fraternals President Leshikar said that he had just returned from a meeting in Pittsburg and this was a matter of much concern. He stated that within the next two weeks all lodge presidents would be receiving a packet of letters to sign and mail to the President and the Treasury Department.

President Leshikar concluded by presenting a check to District Youth Counselor Janet Marek for $4,069.25 for camp activities.

Rest Homes Director Ervin Holy said that both homes were in good shape with fine administrators.

Improvements had been made at both homes including a new laundry at the Needville home, light and power emergency systems at both homes, smoke alarms, nurses' stations and nurses' call systems. Both homes were full with 58 at Needville and 72 at Taylor. The Rest Home Board of Directors had reorganized with Dan Balusek replacing Howard Leshikar and the following are officers: President Sid Pokladnik, Vice President Eugene Hrncir, Secretary Melvin Skrabanek and Treasurer Ervin Holy.

Publication Committee member Sophie Dybala. gave a short report.

The newly - elected officers were Angeline Kristinek - president, Albert Banik - vice president, and Melvin Skrabanek - secretary. Sister Dybala asked that anyone having problems with their Vestnik delivery should give their names and address to her. Mrs. Srubar said she had not received her Vestnik for several weeks because the label came off. James Kulcak said part of the problem may be the postal system. Sister Dybala said that she would look into it.

There was no old or new business.

The Nominating Committee consisting of Laverne Bacak, William Berkovsky, Anita Roye and assisted by James Kulcak presented the following slate of officers: President - Ardis Bacak, 1st Vice President - Albert Olsovsky, 2nd Vice President - Kathleen Wokaty, Secretary - Elaine Berkovsky, Treasurer - Anton Kellner, Jr., Youth Counselor - Janet Marek, Flag Bearer Marcy Dorotik, and Rest Homes Director - Ervin Holy. President Bacak asked twice for nominations from the floor for each office. There were no other nominations so Rita Vanek moved that nominations cease and the slate of officers as nominated by the Nominating Committee be elected.

Sophie Dybala seconded it. The motion passed, unanimously.

There was no report from the Auditing Committee. Rita Vanek said this committee had the same members for many years and it was time to appoint new members. President Bacak appointed James Kulcak and Ervin Holy and Vice President Olsovsky appointed Eddie Vrana.

Lodge 32 Victoria was willing to host the District VI meeting in the fall, with Lodge 97, Placedo and Lodge 143, Inez assisting.

SL President Howard Leshikar installed the incoming District VI officers.

Father Vinklarek gave a short speech on the history of Texas and the good projects of the SPJST. He concluded with a prayer.

The Board report was given by Arleen Tschoerner. Thank you to board members for the cleanup day they had and to Billy Smetanka for fixing the brick planter in front of the hall.

Lodge 25, Ennis Activities The April 11th meeting of Lodge 25 was called to order by President James Whit fill. Garry Mizell led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for our departed Brother Joe L. Novak.

On the sick list are Robert Hornik and Miss Agnes Houdek . As I write this letter, I just received word that our President James Whitfill's mother passed away. All members wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Sister Whitfill.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Sister Margaret Krajca due to the late arrival of Recording Secretary Kay Kovar. These minutes were approved after a slight correction. The minutes of the Executive Board meeting were approved, after a short discussion and vote, to have the mixer in the kitchen repaired.

A letter from SL Vice President Bernard Gebala was read concerning my March meeting report. Thank you so very much, Brothers Gebala, Mikulas and McBride for your kind comments on my report. I hope I deserve your praise!

Sister Linda Trojacek made a youth club report. It seems the youngsters had an enjoyable Easter Party with many prizes. The next meeting will be after the Polka Festival.

And, concerning the Festival, Sister Elizabeth Ann Krajca, in charge of our float, reported that the supplies are here and work will begin immediately.

She asked for volunteers to help; this is a big task and takes many hours to make it. President of this year's Festival, Lillian Trojacek, read a letter from a souvenir shop in Nebraska wanting to put up a booth and since this is not permitted uptown, she asked the members if the lodge would be interested.. The members voted NO; our youth club will have their booth of souvenirs.

Sister Emma gave her financial report and there are so many supplies needed for the festival, the expenses were rather high but the report was still favorable.

On the Bingo report, the attendance has been down lately (probably because of Income Tax time) but was better this week. The Bingo Committee and workers are doing a great job!

Sister Hazel Laza, kitchen treasurer, made her report. The supplies for the many strudels and kolache has also been an added expense. A group of ladies (and some very helpful men) have been very busy making these delicious pastries by the dozens and still have many more to make.

Bar Manager Joe Trojacek reported the necessity to raise the price of drinks at the bar since they are costing the bar more. now.

No new members were reported.

Sales Representative Johnny I. Krajca explained a new type policy for newborn babies. This is a $5,000 policy. The Single premium for a newborn - to - 1 - year - old would be $180 for a girl and $225 for a boy. The age range is newborn to 60 years of age and the premium is judged according to age and if male or female. This paidup policy has cash and loan value.

Sunday's Schedule: Jim Bochnicek (Nebraska) - 1:00 to 5:00 Texas Dutchmen (Houston) - 5:00 to 9:00 (Both of these bands are well known here in Ennis; they have both played here before. Our former President Raymond Zapletal and son, Danny, play with the Texas Dutchmen. This is an outstanding selection of bands so you won't want to miss any of them; and, naturally, the usual delicious menu as in other years and lots of refreshments. Our welcome mat will be out for each and everyone!)

May 18, the Country Noblemen are going to be back. Everyone knows they are great; so keep these dates in mind for lots of good music and a lot of fun.

Emil Driska and Evelyn Johnson will receive their pins by mail.

Adeline Kohutek made and donated a beautiful cake for the pin recipients.

Willie Kohutek gave a summary of happenings that took place in 1935, the year when four young people bought their insurance. Very interesting!

We had 20 members present who had received a 50 - year pin within the last 10 years. It is great to see you all at the meeting.

After the meeting the youth club had their Easter egg hunt and after the hunt everyone enjoyed a delicious covered dish lunch.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, May 5th. We will honor the graduates and mothers. There will be a lunch served afterwards. We ask the ladies to bring salads or sweets; our lodge will furnish the rest of the meal.

Dear Members and Friends: The April meeting of Seaton Lodge No. 47 was held one week late (April 14th) because of Easter Sunday falling on the first Sunday of the month.

Our meeting was called to order by President Jerry Pechal at 2 p.m.

Flagbearers Tim Wilson and Frank Klinkovsky presented the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The membership remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased Sister Ella Pechal. May she rest in peace.

We welcomed to our meeting the following visitors, Gertrude Kahlig, Ann Balusek, Lonnie and Augusta Schroeder, Dave Eagle, Willie Hagar and Frank Bradly. Please come back and visit again because we enjoy your company.

Roll call of officers showed all present and each gave good reports.

There were 12 sales representatives present and 6 absent.

Secretary Ann Koon read the minutes of the March meeting and correspondence. There was a thank you note from the First House; a letter from the Czech Club of Texas University; and letters from SL President Howard Leshikar recognizing the lodge on their contributions to the March of Dimes, the Arthritis Foundation, American Long Association, and the Bell County Youth and Livestock Show.

Lodge 88 Birthday Club Sisters' Report Our April 10th meeting was opened

by President Pearl Hanka reading one of her usual great inspirationals, "The Gold Chain of Friendship."

88 Makes Donations Lodge

The Board of Trustees has announced a list of donations made in the name of Lodge 88 to various organizations since the first of the year. Lodge 88 has always made contributions to many groups and other non - profit organizations for use in their projects, plus many organizations have the use of our lodge facilities. The donations for January, February and March totaled over $2,000 and went to Houston Livestock Show, Southwest Wheelchair Association, March of Dimes, Police Officers Association, Statue of Liberty, Drummett Corp of the Shriners, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for their projects, SPJST Scholarship Fund, complete sponsorship of a Little League Team for the Timbergrove League and a $500 gift to the Traffic Awareness Program to purchase child safety seats to aid the underprivileged in complying with the new state law.

Homer Alexander, chairman of our Abused Children Committee, is planning a benefit dance in September with the proceeds going to Convenant House, a non - denominational emergency shelter for run - aways and abused children through the age of twenty. Brother Homer asks that donations of good useable children's clothing be brought to the lodge and he will pick them up and deliver them to Convenant House.

The Lodge Concert Orchestra and Choral Group appeared at the Main Street Festival Sunday, March 31st. It was reported tfiat this event had a huge turnout on that day and the band and choral group were well - received. The Choral Group under the direction of Tim Kostom and the Concert Orchestra directed by Rudy Dybala make many appearances such as this to emphasize the Czech heritage here in Houston and the surrounding area.

Theytwill appear next in Rosenberg Sunday, May 5th.

-Plans have been made for another "Homecoming With A Splash" for June 2nd. "Homecoming and Splash Day" have been combined again this year. It sounds like the Executive Committee has some nice things in store for us. There will be a FREE barbecue dinner served to the members from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Guests may purchase their meals and after 3 p.m. dinners must be purchased by all.

Sometime there is a misunderstanding concerning the time limit but I'll remind everyone, again, before that date so no one will get confused.

We have some sick members; Sue High has been moved to North West Memorial for extensive therapy, Mike Trefell is in Heights Hospital for tests, and John Kosut is in Katy Community Hospital with a heart problem at this time but may be *moved into Houston

for further tests. Little Julia Marie Hoffman was born March 'I9th to Johnny and Elaine Hoffman and weighed in at barely 5 pounds. She is facing possible heart surgery when she gets stronger and gains a little weight.

Say a prayer for little Julia and her family and for our other sick friends.

The Blue Room "Sing - A - Long" is this Friday (the 26th) and the Ellinger Combo plays in the Chandelier Ballroom Saturday, April 27th. You can sing and dance this weekend.

Sunday, May 5th, the Blue Room Party will be held in the ballroom.

Henry Tannenberger will play for your dancing pleasure. Fried chicken with baked potatoes and all the trimmings will be served and Nat, the friendly bartender, will serve your favorite beverage from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. The tickets are on sale in the Blue Room, the lodge office, and with various people around the lodge; just ask anyone, they'll guide you to the right person. They are a bargain at $10 each -- dinner, dancing and cocktails.

Circle Lodge 92 Ft. Worth Report

April 9th, President Florence Greer opened the meeting with a silent prayer for Frances Jaworski, sister of Rose Jaworski and Helen Paprskar, Rosetta Greer, mother - in - law of Florence Greer, Anton Vystavil, father of Rosie Zalesak and grandfather of Betty Loyd and Rose Niewwiodomy's mother, all who died since our last meeting. She welcomed all members, including two new members, Martha Moon and Sarah W. Wade and visitor, Joe Shirey.

The secretary's report was read by Hermina Cihacek in the absence of Frances Grizzard, who is enjoying a brief vacation with her two sisters on the coast. Treasurer Evelyn Spacek reported on the financial condition of the Circle. All reports were approved as read.

"Thank you" cards from Rose Jaworski and Helen Paprskar and from Florence Greer and Jim Greer were acknowledged. Rosie Zalesak thanked the Circle for their thoughtfulness shown at the time of her father's death.

President Greer reported that daughters of Mary Ann Krivanek and Mary Palachek are in the hospital, one undergoing tests and the other for surgery.

Sunshine McMillen, Lillie Committee, reported sending sympathy cards to the families of those who lost their loved ones. Get - well cards were signed to be mailed to Rudy Wruble and to Esta Belle Hubenak, who, at this writing, is in All Saints Hospital. A monetary gift will be mailed to the Dallas Circle of Czech Women in honor of their 50th anniversary.

Helen Paprskar read an interesting recipe for gardening listing various vegetables to be applied as human traits. Our talented member, Betty Billingston, presented a brief program on nutrition with appropriate posters illustrated with her own art work and with a clever commentary relating to each poster.

Our next meeting Tuesday, May 14, will be a "hat party" and any kind of hat will do - be it fancy, plain, ugly, homemade, a Paris creation, or the

one you recovered from the trash can.

All members must wear a hat or pay a fine of 25 cents. Prizes will be awarded after judges make their selection.

Hostesses at this meeting will be Helen Paprskar, Frances Laux, Catherine Kosarek and Rose Jaworski. All members are asked to bring a covered dish. All guests pay $3 for their lunch.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Minnie Ruzicka, Joyce Tesar and Sadie Gorsuch. Door prize donated by Clara Cohen was won by Mary Botik.

After Mary Powers said the blessing, all present enjoyed a delicious meal of smoked turkey and various covered dishes.

139; Danbury Receives Good Response Lodge

Lodge 139, Danbury met at the Danbury Volunteer Fire Station April 10th. During the meeting Secretary Tommie Lostak read a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar commending the lodge for its $200 contribution to the Danbury City Park Improvement Fund.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp reported she is getting a good response to the invitations to the lodge Family Day barbecue scheduled for April 20th.

It was announced that lodge members Alton Arnold, Ellie Filipp, Albert and Bobbie Heiman, and Joe Landry all have been hospitalized recently. We hope by the time this reaches print, all of them will be out of the hospital and well on the road to good health.

After the meeting a special birthday social was held. Everyone present joined in singing "Happy Birthday" to faithful young member Tommie McLane Lostak; he was presented with a giant birthday cookie on the occasion of his tenth birthday. He attends meetings faithfully even when his parents, Lonnie and Eloise Lostak, are unable to be present.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on all the get - well, sympathy and thank you cards sent.

Sister Mary Renfro prepared a delicious chicken fried steak dinner for the Sokol Advanced Class Banquet for 150. It was enjoyed by all.

Congratulations to our young members, Carrie Ann Cleveland who got a trophy for Gymnast 1985 and to Kelly Hill voted as "Miss Sokol." The Sokol Unit will have an exhibition Sunday, May 25 at 2 p.m. So all you relatives come and see the progress they have made. A lot of excitement is going on with all getting ready for the Southern District Slet in Corpus Christi for the last weekend in May and then to Chicago for the National Slet the last weekend in June.

Brother Norman Kneschk received a 5 - year pin and Sisters Maria Prill (10 year), Gaye Williams (15 - year) and Mary Jean Stoeppelman (20 - year).

We extend our congratulations to Brother Henry and Sister Ann Banfi who celebrated their 49th anniversary February 1st and are getting a pre 50th anniversary gift from their 4 daughters and spouses, Annette and Bill Schabowski, Henrietta and Jerry Milan, Tina and Roy Cox, Raydeen and John Naughton and 10 grandchildren for a 7 - day Western Caribbean Cruise; stopping at Grand Cayman Island, Jamaica, Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on the "Song of Norway" ship. For October 26, 1986 the Second State Tarok Tournament will be held in conjunction with a Polka Festival, to be held also at the Community Center.

Czech Day in Victoria will be October 24, 1985. A workshop is planned for February 22, 1986. All this will be in connection with the Sesquicentennial.

President Joe D. Janak, Jr. gave the program for the meeting. He told the history of the Baca Orchestras. Josef Baca started the first band in 1892.

Since then around 30 of his descendants were involved in or played in the 8 different orchestras. One of the main features of many of the bands was the dulcimer, which was built by the Bacas. When the band was in Washington, D.C. in 1964, the dulcimer was said to be 100 years old.

Josef Baca was born in Bordovice, Czechoslovakia in 1825 and he died in 1905. During his program on the Bacas, Joe D. Janak, Jr. played tapes of many of, the Baca Orchestra recording.

The next quarterly meeting will be June 20, 1985.

Dear Members and Guests: There were, a great number of members and interested guests present when Warrenton Lodge 179 held their regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. April 11th with President Harold Bergmann presiding.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and correspondence. Doris Eckermann gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were, accepted as given.

Ralph Beard stated lodge received a thank you note from Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch for the monetary and material donations.

There was a brief discussion concerning a trip of interest for their members in the near future. No definite decision was made, therefore, the president appointed an Entertainment Committee composed of Jeanette Schoenst, Doris Eckermann and Ora Lee Wickel to take care of that event.

After conclusion of the business session all enjoyed the delectable fried chicken and a great variety of delicious side dishes, dessert and refreshments .

The Food Committee stated that the lodge will furnish cold cuts and members may bring a dessert or salad to complete the menu.

County Czech Heritage Society Meets

The quarterly meeting of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society was held March 21st at the Victoria County Electric Co - op Building.

President Joe D. Janak, Jr. presided. Secretary Joe Pustka read the minutes of the last regular meeting and also of the Executive meeting.

As of March 21st the society has 53 members.

A Czech I class is scheduled for next fall at Victoria College. Mr. Polasek is to be the teacher. Ten students are required for the class. V.T. Kallus gave the report on the Czech class.

Marjorie Matula told about the Czech exhibit to be held at the McNamara House Museum this Christmas.

The society has been asked to present a Czech program June 18 at the Victoria Public Library on Czech Heritage. This will be at 10:30 a.m.

Melicent Bryarly, V.T. Kallus and Doris Obsta are on the committee.

The society plans to make up a Czech calendar for 1986. On this will be all members' birthdays and important days concerning Czech people - such as reunion dates, dates telling when families came to this country, birthdays of Czech leaders here in this country, etc.

Ella Arnold, president of SPJST Lodge No. 32, gave a report on the Czech Fest to be held June 29 at the Victoria Community Center.

The society will have a booth at the Czech Fest where books, Tarok cards and other items will be sold. Marjorie Matula showed a sampling of the books to be had. The Work Committee for the booth will consist of August Kucera, Robert Obsta and Wanda Martijohni.

Liver Transplant Benefit Dance The SPJST Lodge No. 172, 3609 Preston in Pasadena, is requesting the help of all the people interested in helping to save the life of a tiny boy named Travis Shannon of Normangee, Texas, who will be one year old April 18, 1985.He was born with a defective liver, his condition is called Biliary Atresia. He has undergone surgery twice already. The doctors are hoping that what they have done for him so far will hold him until a liver becomes available. He is on the waiting list at the two hospitals that do liver transplants - one in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the other in Dallas, Texas.

This eulogistic write - up at the 150th birth anniversary of great Czech poet, novelist, dramatist, publicist, literary and theatrical critic Viterslav Halek is to introduce one of the outstanding representatives of the Czech literature to the readers of our Czech - American publications.

Viterslav Fiala was born the 5th of April 1835 in the little town of Dolinek, near city of Melnik, close to where Vltava meets Labe (Elbe), north of Prague. He studied at the Academic Gymnasium in Prague and from the year 1855 at the Faculty of Philosophy of Prague University. When he declared his preference for literature, his father, a tavern keeper, who wished him to become a priest, cut off his financial support. Halek was thus forced to give lessons.

At the home of one of his pupils he met Dorota (Dorothea) Hordekova, his future wife, the daughter of a wealthy lawyer. Halek soon married her and this marriage gave him security to pursue a comfortable career in journalism and literature. Hal& wrote his first poem, "A Ballad," in 1854; and in 1859 his first book, "Alfred," a collection of Byronic poems.

During the following years this outstanding writer founded and edited a number of journals and literary almanacs, two of those (Kvety and Lumir) together with his great contemporary Jan Neruda. Viterslav Halek also was an editor of Narodni Listy (National News) from the year of its foundation in 1861 until his death and was one of the leading spirits among the founders of the Umelecka Beseda (Artist's Forum). This cultural center of Prague provided a badly needed meeting place for Czech artists, writers and national leaders.

Halek's life was contented and peaceful thus an idyll comparable to his happy poetry full of tranquility. He reached a great amount of his popularity in his lifetime, and his premature death (at the age of 39) October 8th, 1874 was a cause for national mourning.

As mentioned at the beginning of this Article, Halek is the author of lyric and narrative poetry, tales, novels and historical plays. His lyric poems are considered to be the best; he is recognized as a classic Czech poet of nature and its moods. His outstanding Veeerni pisne (Songs of Evening 1858 59) show happy and content love as a vehicle to awake the deeper human values towards the homeland and to the nation. His later patheistic lyric cycle V piirode (In Nature 1872 - 74) is metaphorical depiction of nature

leading the poet (and the readers of these poems) towards the ideas of divine wisdom and moral truth. Some Halek narrative poems such as Krasna Lejla (Beautiful Lejla 1859) were influenced by the English poet George Gordon Byron (1788 - 1824); others, namely Dedicove Bile Hory (The Inheritants of the White Hill 1869), were written in Halek's own style. His book of ballads: Pohadky z nal vesnice (Tales from Our Village 1874) picture happy, humorous and tragic scenes from peasant life. Similar themes have his other seven tales, where probably the best known is Muzikantska Lidtgka (Musician's Ludmilla), because it was made into a nice movie produced during the First Czechoslovak Republic. Halek's novel Komediant (The Actor 1861) seems to show some influence of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister in describing the development of a peasant youth into a gifted actor. This prolific writer also composed 7 historical dramas modeled on Shakespeare's style; the last of these works, Kral Jill z Podebrad (King George of Podebrady), was written in the year of Halek's death, 1874. Besides' the mentioned literary activity, Halek wrote many articles for Narodni Listy (National News); the best remembered - and even today valid - are his Epi gtoly k naemu studentstvu (Epistles to Our Students), which call for true ethnic awareness among the students and for their love to the native language. Our Czech ethnic group here in Texas needs similar, epistles to preserve our heritage in this state.

I hope this article written to commemorate Viterslav Halek will be of some help in the overall efforts to preserve the language and customs of our forefathers in the Czech American organizations.

Kontinental Prepares For Prague Event

Every 5 years Czechoslovakia gathers some 140,000 men, women and children into Strahov Stadium, near Prague Castle, for a mass exercise performed in unison .

This Sportakiade (Sokol) is one of the most spectacular sports' events I have ever seen. It will be held from June 27th to June 30th.

The event is the culmination of more than a year of local competitions in at least 112 regions of the country.

It consists of nine programs of gymnastics for school children, youth programs, adults and the Army.

All performances including the dances will perform to the music of Antonin Dovrak, the well - known Czech composer.

Strahov Stadium seats 250,000, which will be full daily.

During these events Klub Kontinental, 65 strong, will enjoy all the festival events, folk, art, music and parades, making it an ideal time to visit.

Klub Kontinental begins its 23 - day tour: 5 days in Madrid Spain 3 days in Switzerland 2 days in Garmish - Partenkirchen, in Southern Germany Into Lechtenstein, in the heart of the Alps, then on to Salzburg, Vienna, Austria for 4 days and on our return

From The State Youth Director May Meeting Suggestions Dear Youth Leaders, Mother's Day is just around the corner and is an appropriate theme for May activities. I've included both crafts and activities appropriate for Mother's Day. am not publishing some ideas in this issue of the Vestnik.

You will receive these "secret" ideas in your mail soon. Maybe we can surprise all our special moms with something new and exciting. Watch your mail box for the May meeting suggestions.

Fraternally, Sue Meadows, SYD GAMES Shoe Factory Supplies Needed: A group of people wearing shoes and a medium size playing area.

To Play: Everyone stands in a circle.

All remove their shoes and place in a pile in the center of the circle.

Everyone takes three steps forward towards the pile of shoes. Each person selects an unmatched pair of shoes, neither of which is his own. Each player puts on the shoes he has selected. If he has selected a pair too small, just stick the toes in. Now for the action. As everyone chants "Shoe, *** CRAFTS Bath Sponge Materials: Perfumed bath soap,

Shoe, Shoe" they shuffle around and try to find the people who are wearing the mates to their shoes. When they find their mate, they keep the matching feet together so that all shoes are in proper pairs. The result is a tangled living sculpture slightly resembling a circle. To end the game and find each person's shoes, just step out of the shoes and each person locates their own.

People Hunt Supplies Needed: A baby picture of each person playing; a place to display each picture, paper and pencil for each player.

To Play: As each person arrives, have them give you their baby picture.

Mount it on the wall, chalkboard, or poster. Number the pictures. Give each child a piece of paper and pencil. Have them number down the side for the number of pictures that are mounted.

The object of the game is to see who can identify the person by looking at the baby picture. You may want to do this as a timed contest, or as teams and award a prize to the person or team who finishes first and who has guessed the most correctly. ***

It is a very nice place with beautiful scenery.

DUSTING GLOVE Materials: A garden glove or oven mitt, scraps of yarn, yarn needle.

Thread about two feet of yarn on a needle. Pull the ends even, but don't knot. Take a stitch in the palm, pull

yarn through until an inch is left, then cut off, leaving an inch of yarn. Tie ends in a knot. Stitch and knot yarn all over palm of glove, with stitches about a half - inch apart. Mix up colors for a gay effect. This wooly glove picks up dust in a flash.

From The District Youth Counselors Youth members, it is time to be planning to come to the district IV meeting to be held Sunday, April 28, 1985 at the St. Joseph's Hall on 21st and Division streets in Slaton, Texas. You may participate in our youth program; just come prepared

Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 24 Youth Club was held at 7:30 p.m.

April 10, 1985. We had 25 members, 2 guests, Jeffrey Posvar and David Macek and 3 adults, Mrs. Rose Harvell, Mrs. Barbara McNeill and Mrs. Glenda Gotcher, present.

Under old business a discussion was held concerning a summer trip to "Six Flags Over Texas" in Arlington, Texas. One date mentioned was May 26th. This date is not sure. We will be going on a chartered bus when we go.

Our candy sale is doing quite well.

We are expected to make over $600.

We have been selling the candy bars for over two months now. We will continue to sell them until the next monthly meeting, at least.

Under new business we were reminded of YAD which will be held July 14 at the Elgin Lodge No. 18.

Various members will be participating in various events.

We were also reminded that Mother's Day is just around the corner (May 12). We will either have an art project work day to make Mother something or we will make it at the next meeting, May 8th.

At the next meeting we will have election of officers. If you think you have attended enough meetings, and think you deserve to be elected, why not run.

Birthday celebrant for April is Janet Macek; her birthday was April 17th.

Dear Members, Our club held its meeting Sunday, April 14,'1985. We had several people attending plus several visitors from Snook and New Tabor.

The Easter -egg decoration contest was won by Shannon Wilson. The door prizes were won by Grant Faust and one of the visitors.

District I YC Susan Skrabanek was at our meeting. She told us about camp and YAD. We also had to guess how many jelly beans were in a jar. Brian Faust guessed the closest and won the jelly beans. We also had fun playing a game with toothpicks.

We discussed our candy sales and turned in the money. We still have about half to sell.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club will hold their next monthly meeting May 5, at 2:30 p.m., in the Taiton Community Center.

For the contest, the youth from 6 through 9 ages were asked to make a card; 10 to 12 are to construct an arrangement, and 13 to 17 are to make an arrangement.

We also are expecting Mrs. Janet Marek, our District VI youth counselor, to attend this meeting.

We had a decorated Easter egg contest and the first place winner was Shannon Wilson, second was Jodie Meadors and the third place went to Brian Faust.

After the meeting, Susan played a game with us. We also had two visitors from Snook and New Tabor lodges.

We practiced for our program that we will do at the District I meeting.

Youth Club News From Lodge 30 Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club will hold its monthly meeting May 5th at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

She had some fun games for us to play.

Our club is having a candy sale to raise some money.

For our craft this month, we made flower magnets. After the meeting, we practiced the skit we will perform at the District I spring meeting.

Brother Zettel never married.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. January 24 from the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Rev. Jimmy Hejl officiating. Burial was in the Zettel Cemetery.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the church with the Rev. Ed Kelly officiating. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

1. Reflexive verbs can also express a passive relation. The accusative object of the active sentence becomes nominative subject of the passive sentence. The active subject disappears and the verb takes the reflexive pronoun se and stays in the active voice.

Kdyi se v Petfinskitch sadech zadivame na Kodet0v pomnik, vzpomeneme si moina i na fetani ui petatficate v*rodi skiadatelova odchodu (18. dervence 1949).
