District VII Holds Sales Seminars SFM Silas Smith held dinnerseminars at Pleasanton and Corpus Christi along with District VII Director Thelma Hrncir for the active sales representatives in District VII. Of the 23 producing sales representatives in District VII, 15 were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on to

bigger and better things - "Don't be left behind.'

It is the lodge's and members' duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

April 21st marks the date of Lodge 177's Academy 10th anniversary of its lodge existence, which doesn't seem to be so many years ago. The editor and his family were attending the lodge's official chartering ceremonies December 16, 1973 in the Academy High School Gym. From the beginning of its charter, its membership had a dream to have a home building of their own to hold meetings, various functions, etc. This dream came true December 15, 1974 when Lodge Academy officially held their dedication of its new building on the 4.3 acre tract. The large structure is located approximately 8 miles south of Temple on Highway 95 on the west side of the Little River Bridge.

Lodge 177 will observe and celebrate its anniversary this Sunday with plenty of delicious food and lots of lively entertainment for all ages.

Regrettably, the editor is unable to attend because he will be attending District III meeting in Elk, Texas. Best wishes are expressed to Lodge 177 members for a continued success. *** District III Spring meeting will be held this Sunday, April 21 at Lodge 35 in Elk. The host lodge is located about 14 miles east of Waco off Highway 84.

We encourage, especially, the sales representatives within the district to attend for the presentation of incentive checks at this meeting; of course, in addition there will also be other important business transacted, and a delicious menu is being prepared by the host lodge ladies.

Let us make this day a record breaking attendance! *** The last two district spring meetings will take place on the same date: April 28th. Lodge 17 in New Tabor has volunteered to host the District I meeting, with their usual scheduled time and business. (Refer to page 3) Lodge 157, Lubbock will be hosting District IV meeting also April 28th at the St. Joseph's Hall on 21st and Division Streets in Slaton, Texas (about 16 miles from Lubbock), beginning at 1:30 p.m. REMEMBER, their meeting is APRIL 28TH! It is our wish for both districts to have a large turnout and the members keep taking interest in their lodges. ***

treatment for alcoholism and drug dependency, outpatient therapy, diabetic equipment, organ transplants, newborn children and children's preventive health care -- the list, goes on and on, seemingly endless. At the same time, some legislators have become concerned about the rising costs of medical and hospital care, and seek legislation to investigate the subject of health care cost containment, enlisting the efforts of health insurers to help curtail such costs.

The Conference of Insurance Legislators (COIL) has endorsed model legislation to require insurers to file quarterly financial statements with state insurance departments. The purpose of this proposal is to provide more frequent information concerning the solvency of insurers and transactions within a holding company system to which an insurer may be a part . *** Model Fraternal Code [MIC].

Indiana - H.B. 1830 was reported out of the Senate Insurance Committee "do pass," has passed 2nd reading, final passage on March 27, and is before the Governor for his signature.

Minnesota - S.B. 437 was amended in the Senate Economics and Commerce Committee at request of the Insurance Department.. Amendments are not substantive and the bill was voted out "do pass." Nebraska - L.B. 508 is at final reading, with passage expected soon. A determined attempt to include a premium tax on fraternals in the bill was defeated, after almost an hour of floor debate. Utah - New Law - S.B. 232, a revision of the entire Insurance Code, has been enacted. The fraternal chapter, patterned after the present Wisconsin law, is generally acceptable.

Effective date is July 1, 1986. *** A NFCA Fraternal Project.

Fraternal Retreat was held March 18 20 at the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There were 72 people in attendance representing 54 societies. Doug Mosel, Consulting Resources, served as Retreat Facilitator.

Three work sessions were presented that addressed the identification of current typical fraternal activities of NFCA societies; indentification of NFCA societies' fraternal goals and/or definition of fraternalism; identification of potential ways in which fraternals can work more effectively to achieve common goals -among societies, between societies and State Fraternal Congresses, and between societies and the NFCA office.

Participants divided into nine round - robin work groups. Work session leaders helped to facilitate discussion and record participant contributions.

A detailed report of the Fraternal Retreat will be made at the 99th Annual Meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America at Las Vegas, Nevada. Material regarding the Retreat will be available at that time.

Legislative Highlights. Midway in the present legislative sessions there appears to be a desire on the part of many legislators to mandate insurance coverage for all manner of health problems, without regard to the resultant premium costs in providing such benefits. There are bills to mandate coverage, where not already required by law, for the services of audiologists, chiropractors, dentists, family counselors, midwives, naturopaths, nurses, podiatrists and speed pathologists; coverage for home care, nervous and mental conditions,

Approximately 15 percent of passengers in the front seats of cars wear seat belts -- even though they account for 92 percent of all traffic accident deaths. Why? They simply don't understand the risk. True, the chance of a single auto trip's resulting in a fatal accident is only 1 in 4 million, but over a lifetime, most Americans take about 50,000 car trips. That raises the lifetime probability of being killed in an accident to 1 in 100. The chance of being seriously injured jumps to 1 in 3.

From The Financial Secretary Questions And Answers Pertaining To `Paid-Up Additions' Dear Members: My department has received numerous inquiries about the "Paid up Additions" the SPJST will offer starting in 1986. The most common questions we have been asked are listed below along with the answers. If you have any questions pertaining to the "Paid - up Additions" feature, please notify us and we will be happy to assist you 1. QUESTION: What will my premium refund purchase towards "Paid - up Additions" if my premium refund amounted to $20 at age 10?

ANSWER: Your premium refund of $20 at age 10 would have purchased $90.42 in "Paid - up Additions." This amount is based on the net single premium table from the 1941 CSO Mortality Table. It would be extremely lengthy to list all ages and plans of insurance currently paying a premium refund, so the following examples are given for you to estimate.

2. QUESTION: Will the paid - up insurance purchased be term insurance?

ANSWER: No All paid .up insurance purchased will be the same type as provided by your original certificate.

3. QUESTION: Will I be notified each year on the amount of "Paid - up Additions" my premium refund purchased?

ANSWER: Yes. All certificateholders will be notified as to the amount of paid - up additional insurance that was credited to your certificate.

4. QUESTION: Will the paid - up addition amount have a cash value?

ANSWER: Yes. All paid - up addition amounts will have a cash value should you decide to surrender this certificate.

5. QUESTION: What happens if I die and my certificate is for $10,000 and my paid - up addition has accumulated to $300?

ANSWER: The beneficiary will receive $10,300 as a death benefit.

6. QUESTION: Will endowment certificateholders be able to purchase "Paid - up Additions?

ANSWER: Yes. The amount purchased will endow with the original endowment date.

7. QUESTION: What happens if I do not elect the "Paid - up Addition" Option?

ANSWER: You will receive a premium refund check.

8. QUESTION: If I become uninsurable after I have elected "Paid - up Additions", will I still get them?

ANSWER: Yes. That's what makes this option so attractive. When you elect the "Paid - up Addition" option at the issue date of your original certificate no matter what develops with your health status the "Paid - up Additions" continue to be credited to your certificate, even if you are currently uninsurable.

9. QUESTION: Once I exercise my option between premium refund or "Paid - up Additions" can I change the option?

ANSWER: No. The Supreme Lodge Office will not allow certificateholders to switch from receiving premium refund checks back to "Paid - up Addition" once an option is chosen.

Lodge 6,Cottonwood Celebrates Easter The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 was called to order at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 1985 with 30 members present and 8 guests. The guests were Charlotte Hromadka, Henrietta Mach, Robert Straten, Dorothy Straten, David Straten, Linda Halamik and Sister Sue Meadows, State Youth Director and her husband, Dick.

Correspondence was read from President Howard Lesikar, Supreme Lodge and American Sokol.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz welcomed State Youth Director Sue Meadows.

March 6th, they (youth club) took cakes to the rest home. They will be taking the residents their Easter baskets to the rest home Tuesday, April 2, they also will bring cakes for the residents' Birthday Party, April 3rd. The youth will have a bake sale at the Leroy Bank Friday, April 5th.

Sister Schuetz urges everyone to start thinking about YAD in June. The youth will be working on Mother's Day items. At the next meeting the youth will have a crazy hat contest.

Birthdays for April are Stacie Mynar and Keith Hykel. Shirley Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

Sister Rose Uptmor announced that Darrell Uptmor has been chosen as one of the two students from Connally High School to attend a week at the University of Texas this summer, in a program called Boys Stake. The members of SPJST Lodge No 6 want to congratulate Darrell on this achievement. Darrell is a member of our youth club and recipient of the SPJST Scholarship.

Board of Trustees' report was given

by Brother George Straten. The board discussed the upcoming picnic in July.

Chairman for the prize tickets was appointed. They also are looking for a booth for Westfest.

Door prizes drawn were $10 -- Mary Kazda, not present; $10 -- Benny Mynar, not present; $4 progressive door prize -- Mary Pavlovsky, not present; and Dorothy Straten won the $2 door prize.

The meeting was adjourned and the youth presented an Easter program.

Everyone enjoyed the program and youth members did a good job. Then, the children hunted Easter eggs and they had a good time. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a delicious fried chicken dinner.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be at 7:30p.m. Friday, May 3 with the regular meeting being Sunday, May 5 at 3 p.m.

Dear Readers: Lodge 17 held its regular monthly meeting April 7 with all officers present but, very few other members. I presume it was due to the date being Easter.

Resolutions were read for Brother William R. Odstrcil, Brother Robert Trcalek and Brother Willie John Matejka. May our dear departed brothers rest in peace.

Diane Jaster and Don Chamberlain from the Burleson County Department

oP.Child Welfare were present at our meeting to accept the check donated by our lodge for aid to abused children.

This money was raised at a special function for the purpose. Diane will be present at our May meeting to speak to the lodge about the way our donation is used. Please try to attend; this is a worthwhile project and we can probably learn the best way to aid these unfortunate children.

Lodge 49, Rowena Honors Members A large group of members and guests gathered at our special night at the Lodge 49 Hall for the presentation of the 50 - year pins to two of our members. The honored members were Mrs. Viola Korenek and Mr. Edward Holubec.

After the presentation, a delicious meal was served to all present. The meat was furnished by the local lodge and everyone brought the rest of the trimmings. Then we had our game

88 Meeting Report Lodge

April 8th, the membership of Lodge 88 held its regular monthly meeting.

Following the call of order by President Ermis, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the reading of the minutes of the March meeting, we were introduced to Mr. Tom Kidd, a

social and all enjoyed playing 88 - 42 and straight dominos.

We are now working to complete plans for the State Festival of Ethnic Cultures that will be held in Ballinger April 27th and 28th . Our Lodge 49 has a Czech booth each year where we sell kolache and homemade noodles. Some of the ladies of the lodge dress up in Czech costumes for the occasion.

Our next regular meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 1st.

Elizabeth Walther President SPJSTrepresentative of Covenant House, who explained the accomplishments of that group. About 90 percent of its activities is financed by private donations. Since this is National Child Abuse Prevention Week, perhaps we should consider a personal donation at this time to help finance the undertakings of Covenant House on behalf of abused children. President Ermis presented a check to Covenant House from Lodge 88.

Brother Homer Alexander announced plans for a benefit dance to help abused children, and he requested donations of clothing of all sizes.

These can be dropped off at the lodge at any time.

Plans for "Homecoming With A Splash", set for Sunday, June 2nd, are underway, including the annual free meal for members and plenty of entertainment.

Stayton reported on youth club activities, and various committees reported on the activities of the past month.

Don't forget the Sing - A - Long planned for April 26th in the Blue Room. This time there will be two musicians to entertain you! Also, a Blue Room Party is set for May 5th, with the usual meal, drinks and dance. All for only $10 per person!

Our Czech Concert Orchestra announced plans to perform for the Southwest Wheelchair Olympics; also, Sister Helen Hegwood has a spot on the program of this fine organization to entertain with her beautiful voice.

Of course, both the orchestra and Choral Club will perform for the Czech Fest in Rosenberg in May. District V Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt expressed her pleasure at having the participation of 8 leaders in - training (LITs) from District V at the recent training camp. She reported that three Beseda groups have been invited to perform in Victoria for a Czech Day scheduled June 29th.

Don't forget that Lodge 88 has a dance every Saturday night. April 20th, it's AL PIERSON, and April 28th, it's THE ELLINGER COMBO. Our Entertainment Committee will be happy to see you!

Two of our members were reported on the sick list, namely, Sue High and Bea Hempel. We hope they will soon be well and in our midst.

Brother Tim Kostom has a film of a performance of a Czech operetta by our Hlahol Dramatic Club. He is attempting to schedule a showing and will announce the time and place as soon as available.

The April 10th meeting of Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 7:37 p.m. by President Bill Hutka.

We had roll call of officers; Recording Secretary Pat Tomastik was absent and was ill. I hope you are feeling better soon, Pat! Treasurer Josie Tomastik was absent until 7:43 p.m.; her report was good and all reports given were warmly approved, again, this month.

Communications: A request was read from the Senior Class of Academy for the use of the lodge for a talent night for May 2nd; a motion to donate the use of the lodge for this worthy cause was made.

Libbie Bartek sent get - well cards to Herbert Schwertner and Becky Reed; Becky is home from the hospital and feeling well right now.

Youth Leader Anne Tomastik reported twenty - five members and one social member, were present. She also reported that she had started sending out a newsletter and was enthused with the results and was working on a program for YAD. Board of Trustees reported it was decided to stop the traffic going in and out of the hall on dance nights, again.

The tile has been finished in the entry and a good job was done by Bruce Tomastik, Harold Bland and Tom Baker. Larry Bland reported the tile for around the dance floor would be in this week and Bruce has hopes of having it laid by April 21st.

doctors are hoping that what they have done for him so far will hold him until a liver becomes available. He is on the waiting list at the two hospitals that do liver transplants - one in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the other in Dallas, Texas.

He is a precious, bright little boy who flashes a snaggle - toothed grin while he offers a tiny handshake to everyone he meets.

His parents were told that the transplant operation will exceed $250,000fneeding at least $60,000 of that up - front. But without the transplant operation the chance of survival beyond his second birthday is very slim. Don and Andi Shannon, the parents of little Travis, are wearing. their "beepers” hoping for a signal that a donor liver that is compatible. has been found.

Joe Louis Novak, 56, who died Saturday night, March 16, 1985, at his farm. He was born October 10, 1928 in Ennis and he is the son of Louis and Antonie Kolar Novak. He was reared in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School.

After graduation he worked as a farmer and rancher on the family farm. He was also the owner and operator of several business places during his life, such as the 7 - 11 Store on Business 75 in Ennis, the Sanoma Superette and the Berger Master which was also in Sanoma.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Dear Members, This week I wish to share with you a poem by Frank Kurz, an Oklahoma City area poet. His poetry draws vivid pictures of places far distant in space and time --- Peru, the Phillipines, Lebanon, Mexico --- and also of places and events closer to home. He writes of people and happenings in a manner that brings them to life in the mind's eye of the reader. From The District Youth Counselors Attention District IV Members Youth members, it is time to be planning to come to the district IV meeting to be held Sunday, April 28, 1985 at the St. Joseph's Hall on 21st and Division streets in Slaton.

Texas. You may participate in our youth program; just come prepared and cash in on some of the prizes. We will have the same contests as in the past years.

District IV Youth Achievement Day will be held June 23rd at the Citizen's Building in Seymour. Any youth who is a member and attends the lodge meetings may enter the contests from ages 6 through 17 years. I will be happy to send you the entry form which has to be sent back to me by June 3rd, so be sure that you don't miss out on some of these prizes which is money.

June 1, 2, 3 and 4 are camping dates and we are camping with District I. The same rule applies as for YAD. Numerous Activities Planned By Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Dear Readers: The youth club meeting was held at 2:30 p.m. March 31, 1985,vvith a good attendance.

Sister Sue Meadows, our State Youth Director, was a guest at the youth club meeting. She reported on YAD, camp, programs, crafts and games. We were glad to have her and her husband, Dick, with us at the meeting.

Our club members brought cakes to the West Rest Haven; they also made 92 Easter baskets for the rest home residents.

After the mother lodge meeting, a youth program was presented which was followed by an egg hunt. The prize winners in various categories included as follows: Ages 1 - 4 -- Melinda Kolar, 1st; James Hromadka, 2nd; Ryan Straten, 3rd.

Ages 5 - 8 -- Paul Lenart, 1st; Tammie Dobecka, 2nd; Delton Stuckly, 3rd.

Ages 9 - 12 -- Keith Hykel, lst; Michele Mach, 2nd; Keith Hykel also won 3rd.

I would like to thank each of you who helped with the Easter egg hunt, the program, donated eggs for the hunt and donated items for the special prizes. We made a pretty good income.

Dear Members: Our March social had to be changed from March 29th to March 15th. We had an Easter Party at our lodge home. Thirteen of our sixteen members attendedplus we had several guests. Jamie Meadows won the large Easter basket. Grant Faust and Scott Wilson won the chocolate Easter Bunnies.

We played several games. My favorite games were rolling the Easter egg with our noses, Name That Tune and the boys putting lipstick on the girls with blindfolds over their eyes.

We all got Easter candy and had refreshments. It was a great social packed with lots of fun.

We also received our candy bars to sell for a spring fund - raising event. I cannot wait to get started selling candy.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club News Dear Readers and Friends: Our Lodge 88 Youth Club had their installation of youth club officers March 6th. They were installed by District V Director Jerry Prochazka.

Four District V officers attended the installation and meeting afterwards.

They were District V President Tillie Helmcarnp, DYC Dorothy Pflughaupt, District Flagbearer Jeff Barcalc, as well as District V Director Jerry Prochazka.

There were 31 youth members present with parents, a total of 55 was there.

Brother Jerry Prochazka and Sister Tillie Helnicarnp gave very inspiring talks to all present.

Refreshments were served after the meeting with a St. Patrick's theme.

Youth

The youth club had a February cake sale and thank you to those who donated cakes, cookies and many other good pastries.

Our youth club also went to the Rodeo to see Lee Greenwood. It was fun for the youth and for the parents who went.

March 6 the youth had a special meeting for the installation of our new officers. District V Officers Tillie Helmcamp, Dorothy Pflughaupt, Jeff Barcak were present and Mr. Jerry Prochazka gave the oath of office to our new youth club officers of 1985. A total of 52 people attended the meeting.

Mrs. Stayton, our youth leader, and her assistants served cake and punch after the meeting.

We welcome our eight new youth members this month.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Cabla and Ladis Cabla, Jr., both of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Shanahan of Pasadena and Mrs. Catherine Brown of Huntington Beach, California; two brothers, Eugene Cabla of Sinton and Dr. Herbert Cabla of Portland; three sisters, Mrs. Levina Meeker, Mrs. Emma Hughes and Mrs. Della Mendenhall, all of Sinton, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held February 15 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sinton. Burial was in Sinton Cemetery.

He was married to Miss Mary Krajca of Ennis April 23, 1949. After their marriage they lived in Ennis.

He was a member of St. John's Church, SPJST Lodge No. 25, and KJT. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Novak of Ennis; two sons, Dr. James Novak of Dallas and Ken

Sister Mikeska, the former Vlasta Skrivanek, was born in Ennis, September 23, 1918. She was the daughter of the former Frank and Annie Skrivanek and was educated at Village Creek School in Creechville.

She was married to Eddie Mikeska of Abbott, April 28, 1946.

She is survived by her husband of Abbott; three daughters, Betty Jean Watts of Duncanville, Diane Blagg of Fort Worth and Patsy Ilgenstein of Austin; five sisters, Lillie Hejny, Annie Koubek, Hermina Taraba and Georgia Wensowitch, all of Ennis, and Pauline Marek of Abbott; one brother, Willie Skrivanek of Ennis, and six grandchildren.

Saturday, March 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Giddings with the Rev. Buford Finley and the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in the Giddings Memorial Park.

Brother Goodson served as the sheriff of Lee County from 1951 until 1976 when he retired. That position

has been held by one of his sons, Joe Goodson, since 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha Goodson of Giddings; two daughters, Mary Frances Symmank of Houston and Verna Lucille Shaw of San Angelo; three sons, John, Joe and Charles Goodson of Giddings; two sisters, Lucille Black of Giddings and Rose Mahoney of Austin; also 14 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Brother Goodson was born October 14, 1907, in Burleson County near the Birdsong Community and was the son of John Alexander and Frances Supak Goodson. He was married to Bertha Cottrell March 30, 1929, in Caldwell, Texas by the Rev. Frank A. Horak, Sr. He was one of the organizers of the Lee County Sheriff's Posse, a member of the First United Methodist Church, the J.D. Giddings Masonic Lodge No. 280, a member of the SPJST since 1940 and also the Mutual Aid Society.

Features Horelka-Rowland Pledges Recited At St. Mary's Church Yvonne Marie Horelka of Garland and Randall N. Rowland of Mesquite exchanged double ring wedding vows Saturday, March 16, 1985 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Victoria and were united in marriage. The Rev. Arnold Anders solemnized the couple's pledges.

Miss Horelka is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Horelka of Victoria.

The groom is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. N.W. Rowland.

Mrs. Gloria Ideus, organist, played "You Light Up My Life" and the traditional bridal processional and recessional. She accompanied Dennis C. Boyer and Steven K. Boyer, who sang "Longer Than," "Evergreen," "The Lord's Prayer," "You and I" and "The Wedding Song".

Given in marriage by her father, Miss Horelka wore a formal gown fashioned of white taffeta and beaded Alencon lace. The bodice featured an off-the-shoulder sheer yoke of silk illusion, frosted with seed pearls, and rose to a scalloped lace wedding band neckline. Beaded lace overlaid the bodice and matching inserts of lace enhanced the Juliet sleeves which met beaded gauntlets at the opera level and extended to the bride's wrists. The skirt fell from the natural waistline and was enhanced with matching lace motifs. The gown swept into a ruffled court length train.

The bride's waltz length veiling of imported silk illusion fell from a coif of beaded Alencon lace. The scalloped veil was appliqued with lace motifs.

Hosting the event were Calvin and Georgia Horelka, Rodney Horelka, Beverly Horelka and Yvonne Horelka, children of the couple. Mrs. Horelka is the former Evelyn Kabela.

Special guests were Albina Koutny and Lydia Kabela, mothers of the

couple.

The honorees were presented with a weekend stay in the honeymoon suite at the Faust, Hotel in New Braunfels.

Approximately 40 guests attended the anniversary celebration .

DWI CHANGING ATTITUDES

The problem of drunken driving does not begin when an intoxicated person gets behind the wheel of a car.

It begins with why that person gets intoxicated and behind the wheel. The problem grows out of the attitudes we have about drinking. ° First of all, our society presently condones drinking -- even drinking to excess. Many Americans are actually proud of how much they can drink.

Drinking to get drunk, unfortunately, is accepted behavior.

Secondly, drinking and driving are two activities young persons associate with becoming adults. They are eager to try both; unfortunately their inexperience can lead to the two being a deadly combination.

Thirdly, the crime of DWI is often seen as only that -- a crime, something to be handled by the criminal justice system alone. Our reaction to sensational incidents of DWI is often to want' more police, tougher laws, stiffer punishments, and stricter judges. These actions do 'iwoduce results, but the attitude behind them tends to make DWI "society's

individual has to face. What is needed is a way to stop the potential drunk driver before he becomes drunk and gets on the road.

We must realize several points about changing our attitudes on driving and drinking. First, tougher laws can't do it alone; laws don't change attitudes, people do. Secondly, people need a motive to act, to change their attitudes. They need to feel that their self - interest is involved. Thirdly, people react to support from others; they don't like to do it alone on a new idea or attitude. If attitudes are to change, they must be widely accepted and reinforced by others.

How then can we, as individuals, attack the problem of DWI? It begins with deciding what behavior is acceptable to us. People obey the rules of behavior of their peers. We must make it socially unacceptable to be drunk. We must care enough to show that we openly disapprove when someone abuses alcohol. We must care enough that we don't allow that someone to drive. And we must care enough to promote this same attitude in others.

10/VESTMK—Wednesday, April 17, 1985 First of all, be a friend. As the slogan goes, "friends don't let friends drive drunk." It may take courage, but insist that the friend not drive. Have him stay the night, take away the keys, or call a taxi and pay for it. It's cheaper than a funeral. Your friend may become angry, but when sober he will know you cared enough to draw the line at protecting him.

Secondly, be a caring parent. Talk with your teenager about the problem and listen to what he or she thinks about it. Chances are that one day your teenager may have to decide whether to get into a car about to be driven by a drunk. He or she must be prepared to say no. Make sure your child knows that his or her safety is more important than getting the car home or any inconvenience or embarrassment in being pickedup by a parent at 2 a.m.

Lastly, be a concerned citizen.

Speak up whenever alcohol abuse is portrayed as an amusing or socially accepted form of behavior. Write letters of protest to media that glamorize drinking. Support local authorities and community groups who are working to alleviate the problem. Promote alcohol safety education. Education is by far the most potent weapon in the struggle against drunk driving. You can't change the way people act until you change the way they think.

As a prosecutor, I am concerned that DWI violators are punished according to the law. But prosecution, as you know, is not the entire answer.

As a citizen, as a driver, as a parent, as a fellow human being, I am concerned that we take responsibility for one another. I urge you to help bring about the shift in attitudes needed to prevent drunken driving.

Where State Governments Get Their Money

College Station – Some of the best buys in meat, according to the latest survey by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), are beef liver, ground beef, chicken, turkey, ground chuck and pork shoulder.

The economy of a cut depends on the amount of cooked lean meat or the number of servings it provides, says Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service nutritionist Dr. Dymple Cooksey.

The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that money to run state government in all 50 states climbed from $280 billion in 1982 to $296 billion in 1983.

Meat cuts that are relatively high priced and have little or no waste may be more economical than low - priced cuts with a great deal of bone, gristle or fat, she explains.

The USDA study also compared the costs of 20 grams of protein from different meats and alternates, Cooksey reports.

Some meat alternates, such as peanut butter and eggs, are as good a buy as less expensive cuts of meat.

Some processed meat products, such as franks and bologna, were found to cost more as sources of protein than pork roasts and some beef roasts.

But many meat alternates and meat products require you to eat more than you normally would to get the same amount of protein, advises the nutritionist.

For example, a 3 - ounce serving of cooked lean meat, poultry or fish provides about 20 grams of protein or more. But it takes four and one - half tablespoons of peanut butter, four frankfurters or 10 slices of bacon to provide that same 20 grams of protein, she says.

Polyunsaturated Fats And Blood Pressure A series of nutrition studies by researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggest that one of the many factors affecting blood pressure is the amount of polyunsaturated fats in the diet, says nutritionist Dr. Alice Hunt.

By increasing the ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fats, the researchers significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in 40 - to 60 - year - old men and women with normal or slightly elevated blood pressure, reports the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service specialist.

It's significant that in two of the studies the participants' blood pressure was lowered without reducing their intake of meat, diary products, eggs or salt, says Hunt. These studies show that blood pressure can be reduced by increasing polyunsaturated fats in the diet, regardless of the saturated fat content.

An inhabitant of these areas calls himself a Moravec, which does not at all mean the same thing as a Czech.(17) The name Moravec was also used in the previously mentioned cultural regions of Lachia and Moravian Walachia.(18) Here the _name also carried a distinct national connotation, although in these two cultural regions it was not so easy to distinguish persons calling themselves by this designation as members of a homogenous cultural group. It was somewhat simpler to differentiate the national concept of the Moravec of Prussian Silesia than it was for the Moravec of Lachia and Moravian Walachia, regions where Polish, Slovak and German influences blended more smoothly than in the Opava and Hlue'in areas. Actually several different terms exist in Moravian and Bohemian dialects to designate an inhabitant of 'Moravia. (19)' In modern times the name "Moravan" has been most widely used in Bohemia and Moravia. The name Moravan, however, chiefly indicates a geographical orientation and is generally void of a national connotation. Several subtle shades of difference exist between the meanings of the terms Moravec and Moravan.

As has been generally understood, the Moravan is an inhabitant of Moravia, a land which historically and culturally is part of the Czech nation. A Moravan speaks one of several dialects of the Czech language and he is a spiritual heir of the Czech National Awakening of the 19th century, a movement which helped give birth to the modern state of Czechoslovakia.

On the other hand, the Moravec was hardly touched by the development of Czech national consciousness in the 19th century. Somewhat tenaciously, the Moravec recognized his cultural differences with the Bohemian. The Moravec spoke Moravian, which he generally considered to be one of the Slavic languages rather than a dialect of Czech. The Moravec stressed his Moravian identity and in varying degrees Moravians recognized this identity within a general Slavic context. The Moravec stubbornly refused to subordinate his culture to the Bohemian. Many Czech Moravians in Texas preferred the name Moravec. This term conveyed well the concept of national identity with which many immigrants identified themselves. It would later also come to convey something of the feeling of independence and self sufficiency which was associated with pioneer life in Texas. Finally, the name Moravec is of interest because it has almost vanished from usage in modern - day Czechoslovakia as a term for an inhabitant of PvIoravia.(20)

According to Sweeten, the government analysis revealed that each herbal pill contained an arthritis drug, a potent diuretic and a tranquilizer.

The label suggested taking only 4 pills each day, but the product directions proposed 12 daily pills as the upper limit.

Since it may take some time to recall the outstanding supply of this herb pill supplement, the nutritionist advises consulting a physician before taking any herbal remedies or any other diet supplement.
