SPJST Society Contributes To DHR The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) supports the Regional Network for Children Conference. The officers of the Supreme Lodge of SPJST are shown presenting a check to Sandra Martin, Conference co - chairperson. The conference provides "State of the Art" training for approximately 600 professionals providing care to Texas foster children. Many of these foster children have been removed from their family homes due to severe abuse and neglect.

The members of the SPJST, a fraternal insurance organization, have pledged their volunteer support to the Children's Protective Services Division of the Department of Human Resources (DHR) whose job it is to protect children who have been abused and neglected. During the last two years members of SPJST have donated money for a variety of needs for the children in foster care from clothing to toys; they have supported children's emergency shelters, and they have presented community fairs to heighten the public's awareness toward the problem of child abuse and neglect.

Last week your editor promised to have some information on our mail delivery, if possible. Brother David Kolar from Hill County Press (our publishers) contacted the postmaster in Hillsboro, Texas, and yours truly (editor) contacted our postmaster here in West, Brother Freddie Kaluza plus the distribution department in Waco.

Here seems to be the answer: January 1, 1985 a new ruling went into effect in the U.S. Postal Service, ie. Some of the smaller newspapers started complaining that "The Wall Street Journal, NewYork Times, etc." were receiving preferential mail treatment so now all second class mail is handled in with the First Class; of course, First Class letters are handled FIRST. The Second Class mail used to go to the Bulk Mail Distribution Centers and was machine sorted and now it is handled by workers, therefore, it is sloweddown instead of expedited. Beloware excerpts from the Official Post Office Directive: SERVICE. When mailers converted their labeling to pink labels, that mail became subject to the same service standards given newspapers and other surface preferential mail.

Now, all second • class mail is accepted, processed and delivered within the servicestandards for surface preferential mail. This means all second - class mail should be delivered within 7 days instead of the previous standard of 10-days.

POSTAL FACILITIES. During the transition period, transfer hubs, SDC .and SCFs saw a shift in second -··class volumes from Bulk Business Mail processing to preferential handling. In many instances, Tour I operations experienced increases in second - class volumes intended for delivery that

day.

All second • class mail, whether labeled NEWS or 2C is now distributed together in the same .ease and processed within facility Operating Plan guidelines for surface preferential mail.

Delivery units must now handle all second - class mail daily to make carrier delivery on the first trip after receipt, providing such delivery does not delay First • Class Mail and Priority Mail. · All postal employees involved in acceptance, mail processing, transportation and delivery activities should ensure that second - class mail is given the timelyhandling to meet the service commitments we have made to our customers.

It seems that we will have to wait until the various Post Offices have "ironed out" their difficulties and adjusted their "transition" period.

We hope this explainsthe conditions which exist. We are glad we received an explanation to pass on to our members and readers.

*** Each of the three major TV networks ABC, CBS and NBC plus PBS have doctors on their staffs plus other medical center reports about many diseases, especially cancer and your editor sometimes tapes the information to be able to write it down. Here are some informative things for use in the kitchen as "a

defense against cancer in cooking modifications in your daily diet to reduce cancer chances."

Eat more high - fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables and wholegrain cereals.

Use dark green and deep yellow fruits and vegetablesrich in vitamins A and C. Include cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi and cauliflower.

Be moderate in consumption of salt - cured, smoked, and nitrite - cured foods.

Cut down on total fat intake from animal sources and fats and oils.

Avoid obesity or getting fat.

Be moderate in consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Is cancer inherited? Does cancer "run in families"? According to . best estimates, only a small percentage of cancers is actually inherited in this way (about 5 percent).

Another 15 percent of all cancers probably results from spontaneous mutations. They are random events, things that just happen for no good reason that we know. The remaining ·80 percent is a result of environmental agents, including cigarette smoke, but no one knows how much of a role is played by genetic susceptibility to these agents.' ' That doesn't mean, however, that 80 percent of cancers is caused by the environment. For example, not everyone who smokes getslung cancer.

There may be something genetically different about those who do get it.

It is also possible to inherit a physical condition which increases the tisk that an individual will get a certain kind of cancer. Untreated ulcerative colitis leads to cancer of the colon in almost 100 percent of cases as does another inherited colon disease, familial polyposis.

The chances that a woman will develop breast cancer are much higher if her mother and sisters have had the disease. There are also patterns of colon, ovarian, and central nervous system tumors that appear to have a genetic basis.

Here is the relative risk of breast cancer: No Family History -- 1.00; History of Breast -- Cancer In Mother and/or Sister -- 2.SO.

Before this year is over, about 5,500 people will die of a skin cancer called malignant melanoma. Since a primary cause of the disease is thought to be overexposure to ultraviolet light, dermatologists recommend: Avoid sunlight exposure during the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun's rays are most intense. When in the sun for extended periods, apply a sunscreen every hour. A sunscreen with a sun - protection factor of at last 15 can provide protection against the sun 's damaging ultraviolet radiation. *** , Those new22 • cent stamps are gooa only for letters weighing 1 ounce or less, reminds the Postal Service. If your letter weighs more than that, it will cost 17 cents for each additional ounce. On the other hand, if your messageis brief, you may wish to send a postcard for 14 cents.

Officers of CESAT (Czech Ex Students Association of Texas) held an Executive Committee meeting in the SPJST Hall, Taylor, Texas Saturday, March 23, 1985.

Inasmuch as the promotion of the teaching and study of the Czech language and Czech culture is one of the major purposes and objectives of CESAT, a decision was made to increase the present scholarship program for high school students in Czech language and culture studies.

More information on these programs will be available after the annual conference of CESAT which will be held in the near future, date and place to be announced shortly.

One of the goals of the organization is to increase the teaching of the Czech language and culture at the high school and college level. However, it must be realized that, to accomplish this goal, more attention must be placed on the training of qualified teachers who will be required as the reactivation or initiation of Czech language in high school and college curricula takes place.

The Historical and Museum Committee under Chairman Roger Kolar is developing a catalog of historical data and resource materials related to our Czech heritage. This committee also is developing an oral history project utilizing tape recordings of senior citizens with their accounts of their early years in Czech communities of Texas.

Most of this meeting was devoted to a discussion of the 1986 Symposium of Czech Folk Music in Texas which will be held in November, 1986 as a part of the Texas Sesqui - Centennial celebration. Dr. Clinton Machann is heading up the committee which is developing this 3 - day Symposium to be held at the Brazos Community Center in College Station. CESAT has pledged support of this program with an initial grant of $1,000 and during this year additional funds will be sought from various organizations, fraternal societies, etc. More information on this Symposium will be available after the annual conference of CESAT. Professor Joseph Skrivanek discussed the work of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (Ceska Nadace Statu Texas) and his talk with Dr. Walker of Texas A&M University regarding the establishment of a chair for Czech Language Culture at A&M. Professor Skrivanek indicated that Texas A&M has pledged to match the sum of $500,000 provided by any organization for this program.

CESAT passed a resolution to encourage the establishment of this chair at Texas A&M. Taylor Lodge No. 29 has indicated

interest in Czech movies, and so Mrs. Lillian Pivonka will provide President Adamek of Taylor lodge with a list of films now available. CESAT authorized the expenditure of $50 for these films. Sincere appreciation of the use of Taylor Lodge Hall for CESAT meetings was extended to President Adamek on behalf of the CESAT organization.

1985 American. Czechoslovak Day At State Fair Of Texas The

The American - Czech Cultural Society wishes to announce that the 45th American - Czechoslovak Day at the State Fair of Dallas Texas will be held Sunday, October 6, 1985. To those who wish to participate on the program, your wishes should be made known immediately to Mrs. Stacy Athas, 3936 Warrington Dr., Dallas, Texas 75227. The program is rapidly filling out with fewer time slots available. Please do not be disappointed by any procrastination in making your wishes known.

Furthermore, the Cultural Society is looking forward to the Texas Sesquicentennial celebration in October 1986 at the Dallas State Fair.

Besides the Sunday program, the preceding Saturday afternoon and evening is being considered to expand the program, since the State Fair officials have tentatively made that time available to the Cultural Society.

Lodge 66, Waco Changes Meeting Date The Entertainment Committee met Wednesday, March 6, 1985. We decided to ask the members to bring sandwiches to the April lodge meeting.

The Entertainment Committee will provide the chips.

There were 68 members present at our March lodge meeting. There were a lot of delicious covered dishes for everyone to enjoy. All seemed to enjoy the twenty dozen scrumptious cookies (baked by Sister Dorothy Shilling and decorated by Sister Cory Pruitt); they disappeared real last! No one even minded them being "greenish.'

Those who arrived early, before the meeting, delighted in the music of the "Moonlighters." They are a recently formed local band and eager to play in our area. We hope you all will come out to listen and dance to their smooth, country sounds; we have booked them for a couple of engagements at Linden Hall. Watch your Vestnik for the dates!

During the lodge meeting, the date for the April meeting ,was changed to April 14th. This allows our members and officers the opportunity to attend the District III meeting Sunday, April 21st, at the SPJST Lodge No. 35 Hall in Elk. An announcement: Twin boys were born to Anthony and Marjorie Richard on December 23, 1984. Shawn weighed 4 lb., 51/2 ozs. and Kevin weighed 4 lbs., 131/2 ozs. They made their debut at Memorial City Hospital in Houston, Texas. Grandparents are Edwin and Jo Ann Brazda for their first time and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Richard for their fourth time.

Our members are also going places again: Sister Rosie Tumis and her daughter, Pat Schleider, have been jet - setting again; last month they went to Brentwood, Tennessee to visit Sister Rosie's son and Pat's brother, Harvey and his family, wife, Rita and children, Brian, James and Celeste. A very enjoyable reunion was had by all.

The Senior Citizen luncheons given by the Immanuel United Church of Christ and St. Michael's Catholic Church were attended by Tony Ondracek, Martha Stuchly, Marie Bertram and Betty Lehmann.

Monday afternoon, March 11, 1985, the Hope Lutheran Church of Beasley had services and a social afterward.

Monday morning, March 12, the Houston Humane Society held a Dog Show for the residents. Everyone enjoyed the dogs and their tricks.

Monday afternoon, March 18, Elizabeth Miller, Garland Huryta and Julia Huryta with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Wednesday morning, March 20, the State had an open hearing for the families and residents.

Friday afternoon, March 22, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Vacek entertained Mary Vacek with a Birthday Party. A few friends and relatives attended.

Also Friday evening, March 22, the Knights of Columbus came to play Bingo with the residents. Everyone had an enjoyable evening.

Ida Hanka spent a week with her daughter - in - law, Pearl Hanka in Houston. Pearl had a birthday dinner Saturday night, March 23rd in her honor which included turkey, dressing, ham, sausage and all the trimmings.

Monday afternoon, March 25, residents Tony Ondracek, Betty Lehmann, Marie Bertram, Martha Wleczyk, Martha Stuchly, Moody Flagg, Minnie Graeber and Hulda Richter, Activity Director Martha Marx and Volunteer Paul Legendre enjoyed riding to Richmond to look at old homes and other interesting places.

Happy Birthday celebrants for month of March were residents Henry Novosad, Francis Jacob, Ida Hanka, Mary Vacek and Malcolm Tinsley; also among the staff included Harvey Marx, Esther Mae Foston, Shawnda L. Jones, Diane A. Rivers, Mary Susik and Sally A. Wleczyk.

The Birthday Party which was held March 29 included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to favorite music. The "A" Flower and Gift Show provided corsages and the boutonnieres. The Ruth Circle from the Methodist Church provided cakes.

Volunteers Lydia Hortmon, Bertha Ross and Melva Hastings served coffee, punch, cake and ice cream; the afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Ida Hanka Celebrates 90th Birthday · Sister Ida Hanka celebrated her 90th birthday with her family at the home of daughter - in - law Pearl Hanka here in Houston. Pearl served a delicious dinner for her Saturday, March 23rd.

"Grandma Hanka" was 90 on March 20th. Grandsons, Bruce, Glenn and Brett Hanka, arid granddaughter, Arlene Marshall, with their spouses, seven great - grandchildren plus two great - great - grandchildren, and nephew Roland and his wife, Becky Hanka, attended this happy event.

Another daughter - in - law, Mae Hanka. came from Clarksville, Arkansas to visit for several days. Mrs.: Hanka resides in the S.P.J.S.T. No. II Rest Home in Needville and spent her "vacation" with Pearl and visiting with her many friends who stopped by to say hello. Pearl was astounded by Mrs. Hanka's memories of the hard times the original members of Lodge 88 had while founding the first lodge on Robbie Street. She remarked after, listening to these tales, that the present members have a lot to be thankful for from the earlier hardworking families of Lodge 88. We wish Grandma Hanka continued good health and many more happy birthdays.

Holy Family Catholic Church in Missouri City was a scene of a lovely wedding March 16th. Lin Lesak was united in marriage to Mary Denise Marek. A dinner and dance, with Paul Christy, disc jockey from Radio Station KREB, was held in the church hall for 300 family members and friends. The young couple went to Acapulco for their honeymoon "but both are back hard at work. Denise works in the county auditor's office and Lin is employed by Southwestern Bell Paging Systems. Lin has been an active SP JST Lodge 88 member since childhood and his mother, Mrs. Agnes Pederson, is an active lodge sales representative.

Roger and Judy Akey, members of our lodge, made Maxine's Column over the weekend. Their picture appeared in Sunday's Chronicle Zest Section. Roger is very active in The Crime Stoppers organization and he and Judy attended a reception on board the British scientific exploration ship Sir Walter Raleigh docked at the Port of Houston.

Friends and family of George and Mary Butschek gathered over the weekend to help George celebrate his retirement from 44 years with 'Ma" Bell. Friday, a reception was held at the phone company and then Saturday, March 29th, close friends and relatives gathered at their home for an informal party. Their daughter, Rose Mary McLaughan with her husband and two of her children,

Robin and David Dorn, were there from Kansas City, Kansas, daughter Deanna, her husband and children, Bret and Melaine Parnell, from Houston attended. George and Mary each have several brothers and sisters and so it was like a big and happy family reunion. Mary reports they have no retirement plans for right now, except it will be easier to run back and forth to the farm in Moulton. Best wishes and much fun in your retirement years, George and­ Mary.

Bea Hempel had surgery but is now at home recovering. Bea worked in the lodge office for a while several years and it was a great loss to us at Lodge 88 when she moved onto ''bigger and better" things.

Our top sales representatives are all back tired but happy. Franklin and Almeida Bravenec, Helen and King Hegwood, Louis and Oleta Hanus, Tillie Helmcamp, Earline Hoffman, Mildred and Billie Jack Holeman, and Amos and Della Kadlecek made up the entourage from Lodge 88. They all drove to Temple to catch the bus for Arkadelphia, Arkansas where they enjoyed a weekend sponsored by the Home Office Insurance Dept. honoring the top sales personnel for insurance sales in 1984. They enjoyed boat rides, relaxing along the lake shore, hot baths and horse racing in Hot Springs. Our congratulations to these hardworking sales people for a job well done. All our sales representatives are going through changing times with deleted types of certificates and additional plans of insurance to learn. Call on any of them if you need additional insurance or if you know anyone who is interested in joining our great organization. Laura and Royal Warnasch flew to Las Vegas Tuesday, March 19th to meet Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Skeets and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Giese of Sioux City, Iowa. They had a nice visit in between bouts with the "one - armed bandits." That weekend more lodge members joined them; namely, Bill and Pat Neskorik, Clara and Johnny Broz, Steve and Estelle Kelly, and King and Helen Hegwood were in town for a Century Twenty - One Convention.

Also, congratulations to the Dallas Circle of Czech Women who will celebrate their 50th anniversary April 14th.

After 50 years as an organization, we all know there are many dedicated members in this group.

We express our sincere condolences to Helen Parma and her family for the loss of her husband, Oldrich Parma of Dallas. Brother Parma was a devoted Sokol and one who was very conscientious of his duties as Education Director of the Southern District.

We also express our condolences to Rosie Zalesak on the loss of her father, Anton Vystavil, · who passed away March 30th. My uncle, by marriage, w.ould had been 98 years of age in June.

After our luggage was loaded into our bus, 37 of us headed for Brussels, Belgium. We had a short orientation drive around this capitol city before retiring for the night after 9 hours and 35 - minute flight time from Houston.

The next morning on the 3 Yz hour ride from Brussels to Paris we got our first look at some agricultural scenery.

(Agriculture being the major industry of France.) Potatoes, sugar beets and wheat grow well in this fertile land.

In the evening the group had reservations at the famous Paris nightclub, "The Moulin Rouge" with dinner and the world famous show.

We now show the program of the evening with pictures that makes conversation interesting.

On the second day in Paris we visited the world famous International Food and Wine Fraternally, Exposition.

Next door and in Ellen Miculka conjunction with it was the -SPJSTInternational Livestock Show with prize winning cattle, horses and hogs.

The cattle were not only large, but enormous. Later that day we took one of two elevators to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower and had a good view of Paris. of Burgundy with vineyards that stretch to the horizon as far as the eyes could see. Switzerland is something else! It has more beautiful scenery per square mile than one ever dreamed could be possible. The country is called the "Pleasure Garden of Europe," because it has more tourists than the country's native population.

In Switzerland we visited a local dairy farm family. Most of the ladies were delighted to see the inside of a typical Swiss home while the men inspected the Swiss dairy barns. Some of the homes are built of stone, and the barn built of wood, but both are under the same roof. The Swiss couple were delightful hosts and we enjoyed their wine and Swiss pastry.

The excitement mounted as we approached Monaco. The name, Monte Carlo, is famous throughout the world, not only for gambling, but also · for the majestic setting of its palaces, the villas, shops and flowered terraces.

There are about 5,000 residents on this 375 - acre tiny state, but only 2,500 are voting citizens. I guess these statistics tell us that many people enjoy living in Monte Carlo.

The tour of Monte Carlo was indeed fantastic. We visited the Cathedral where Prince Ranier and Princess Grace were married, and now· where she is buried. We were not allowed to take pictures in the Cathedral. The fortess - like palace of Prince Ranier is built on a rocky spur which juts into the sea. The palace has occupied this spot since the 13th century. The famous Monte Carlo Casino is not too far from the palace. Many of us tried our luck at the "machines," but no one hit the jack pot; it was too early for the other gaming tables to be open.

Besides Paris, another interesting city in France was Nice. In this city there is a restriction on the heights of buildings. Most are seven floors high, but in a special area such as near a race track, eighteen floors are allowed.

Also, near this city, which was a delight to all the ladies, was a tour of a perfume factory. In France they say, "We drink and we stink, but we stink pretty." Both products being very famous, which the French people boast about. The price of perfume in France compared to the price here in the states is unbelievable. Most of our tour group came home with the famous brand "Joy." We continued our journey into Italy, the cities visited were Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome. ln Milan, an important treat was a visit to see "The Last Supper," Leonardo de Vinci's most famous painting. The masterpiece is painted on the wall of what used to be the dining hall of a small monastery; During World War II bomb damage was done to the monastery, but the survival of this great work through the war years is remarkable. At the present time the painting is going through a restoration process by some famous painter.

Then, not too far from Milan on our route to Venice, we visited our second dairy and hog farm. This Italian farmer had a beautiful layout and, once again, we were treated royally with wine and Italian food.

The city of Venice, which is built into the Adriatic Sea on 117 islands, has 150 canals and over 400 bridges.

Here the canals replace streets, so there is no wheeled traffic.

All the transportation is waterborne.

The traditional "gondola" is still the most popular way of getting around. We had an evening gondola trip arranged with a serenade. It also leads to the prison where Cassanova was

Another tourist attraction in Venice, which all the local people enjoy showing, is the glass blowing factory and its merchandise salesrooms. The glass blowers were remarkably skilled.

The precious items we saw produced, could also be purchased.

The third city in Italy which we had a walking sightseeing tour was Florence. Here one saw old palaces of past noble families, ancient squares and buildings, namely, the Cathedral, the Baptistry, and the Accademia where the fantastic statue of David done by Michelangelo is on view.

Also, in this city we visited a leather shop that had leather goods whose prices were too good to resist. We did not hesitate in coming home with an additional suitcase, purse, belt, wallet or other nicely crafted articles.

With mixed emotions, we made a short visit–to the well kept Florence American Memorial Cemetery where 14,000 American soldiers are buried. It was between Venice and Padova, Italy that my brother Lt. Col. Anthony Tirk, Jr. on March 11, 1944 did not return from a bomber escort mission; his name was not inscribed on the memorial wall, because his body was never found.

The stay for the last three nights of our tour was Rome. A city without equal when it comes to legend and historical significance. This was the last time to have a special native guide to tell us all the wonders of Ancient Rome. There is so much to see that two days of tours is insufficient to glimpse everything. But the highlights were the Coliseum where gladiators and Christians fought for their lives, the Circus Maximus, where the chariot races took place, St. Peter's Basilica, perhaps the most majestic building in the world, standing on the spot where St. Peter was martyred and buried, Vatican City, the smallest state in the world (108) acres with 13 miles of high wall.

The magnificent Sistine Chapel in the Vatican with 4 miles of art galleries. Michelangelo spent eleven years of his life in this chapel producing overwhelming frescos which adorn the end wall and the ceiling. It is in this chapel that the cardinals elect a new Pope.

Just outside of Rome a visit to the Catacombs of the early Christians was most interesting The Catacombs are tunnels hollowed out of volcanic rock where the early Christians held worship services out of the sight of the Roman authorities and in which they also buried their dead. To see how it all began nearly 2,000 years ago was a moving experience.

Another moving experience was a tour of the town of Pompeii on the outskirts of Naples and south of Rome. A local guide gave a comprehensive tour of the excavations of the town, a once great city that housed 20,000 people. Three thousand people were buried under 25 feet of volcanic ash and the town destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Animals and human bodies have been found petrified just like wood.

During the last evening in Rome, our Tour Director received word that the firemen at the Rome airport were going on strike. Therefore, this meant to get out of Rome as soon as possible because being stranded in Rome was a possibility. To make a long story short, alternate flight plans were made to Amsterdam, and after a short bus tour of that city we boarded the huge 747 KLM aircraft, and we knew after 9 hours and 35 minutes we would be in the U.S. It is good to be at home and to share our experience with

those who are interested.

Antonio Choral Group Meets San

The San Antonio Czech Choral Club met March 15 at the Polish American Center for their regular meeting and practice. The members are very dedicated to the club and have a very good attendance record, although we have some members from Floresville and Pleasanton.

We are grateful to all of them. A short meeting is always held prior to the practice, dues are collected and discussions are held for the betterment of our club. The group chartered a bus to Corpus Christi where they performed at the South Texas Heritage Day. It was a wonderful trip and enjoyed by all. The day at the celebration was very much enjoyed by all members. We want to compliment the committee who had so much to do with the celebration. It was well done, Corpus Christi, and we are looking forward to next year!

May 4th, the group will be singing at a wedding mass for the daughter of one of our members, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Jasek; June 29th the group will be travelling to Victoria, Texas where we have been invited to participate in the Czech Heritage Day there. We also have two more weddings later in the year, so it has been a very busy year for us, however, we enjoy it very much.

We will also try to find time to visit the nursing homes in Flatonia and Moulton.

The Choral Club will be celebrating their 15th year with a dinner and dance which will be held at the St. Margaret Mary's Activity Hall on Fair Avenue in San Antonio, June 8th. The dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; dancing from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m., with music by the Wence Shimek Orchestra.

The total price for dinner and dance will be $7.50 per person. (The meal will consist of roast beef with all the trimmings.) Tickets must be bought not later than May 25th.

Mass At Moravia

Czech

Sunday, April 21, 1985, there will be a Czech Mass at Moravia. The Mass is in honor of the Blessed Agnes of Bohemia and is a part of the program for the Moravia Czech Day. The main celebrant of the Czech Mass will be Bishop John L. Morkovsky of the Diocese of Galveston - Houston. This celebration was originally scheduled in January but postponed due to bad weather.

Following the Mass there will be a lunch served to those who have purchased advanced lunch tickets (no lunch tickets will be sold at the door).

The lunch will be barbecue and sausage. Serving will begin at 12 noon.

Then, there will be a short cultural program. The program will consist of a presenation of "Mrs. Frances Breska's Handwork" by Mrs. Mary Hrncir, photographs of embroideries on Texas Czech Folk Costumes, an Exhibit by Mrs. Svatava P. Jakobson of the University of Texas at Austin, Czech Wood Burning by Karl Franzl, and Traditional Czech Singing by the Moravia Czech Heritage Singers. We also ask that anyone who has a kroj to wear it to our celebration.

We had a very nice turnout. While the eggs were being hidden, all the youth enjoyed cupcakes in the shape of Easter eggs. The cupcakes were baked

by Mrs. Martha Durham and Mrs. Pam Davis.

The adults also had lots of fun hunting cans of beer hidden by the older youth members.

Prize egg winners were Jolie Paprskar, Codi Kubala, Jon Eric Pap rskar, Doug Gilcrease , Kelly Kubala and Holly Hubenak.

Inez Krivanek and I have returned from camp retreat. We met our new SYD Sue Meadows who has given us some good ideas; the workshop was very interesting and I hope we have more persons going to camp.

We hope Sue can come visit our youth group soon.

Lodge 40 Youth Club Holds Meeting Our SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje Youth Club held a meeting March 21, 1985. We gave to the United Way for a charity project.

Our District VI spring meeting was held March 24th at Moravia. We had cake, punch and chips to eat.

Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Hold Meeting Our last monthly meeting was held at 3:10 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 1985.

Penny Spitzenberger called the meeting to order and Susan Spacek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The role call was then called; there were 17 members, 2 visitors and 6 adults at the meeting..

The secretary was absent so there were no minutes read. The treasurer gave her report and then we discussed going to see the Ice Capades. We will go see them April 20th.

Mrs. Susan Skrabanek, District I youth counselor, then talked to us about camp and YAD. Susan Spacek made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Trudy Krenek seconded the motion.

Door prizes were won by Wesley Ford, Lamar Hervey and Delia Weiderhold. After the meeting we played games.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Enj y Easter Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its April meeting March 31st at 2:30 p.m. in the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar.

Jeanie Dorotik led the Pledge of Allegiance and Keith Kresta recited the prayer.

For the contest everyone was asked to decorate an Easter egg. After the meeting we had an Easter egg hunt for the children. We then had refreshments which consisted of punch, rice crispie squares, cookies, candy and cake.

The SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje Youth Club held its meeting at the American Legion Auxiliary Hall, March 21st.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Sharon Borak. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Holub.

We donated money to the United Way. We brought the bibs that we made at home to the meeting to give to the nursing home residents.

Born at Smithville, Texas on May 17, 1917, she moved, with her parents, to West in 1919. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Court 829. She was also a member of KJZT Society No. 11, KZT Society 31, and a member of St. Mary's PTC Choir.

She was married to William Rauschuber October 6, 1936, in Tours.

He preceded her in death July 5, 1982.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Rosemary) Banik of West; two sons, Edward Rauschuber of Lewisville and Alfred Rauschuber of Burleson; her mother, Rosie Girard of West; two brothers, Dan Girard of Canyon Lake and Rudolph Girard of Mayfield, Kentucky; two sisters, Lucille Hessel and Evelyn Gajdosik, both of West; nine grandchildren, and two great - grandchildren.

Sister Jaworski is survived by her sister, Rose Jaworski, and sister and brother - in - law, Helen and Mike Paprskar; six nephews and nieces and five grandnephews and grandnieces, all of Fort Worth.

Rosary, conducted by Rev. Paul Slaby, was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Harveson & Cole Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 15 at All Saints Catholic Church with Father Ignacio Blanco, celebrant. Father Martin Sanz officiated at the services at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and a member of SPJST Lodge 33.
