There is no question about it! Spring is here in the West area. The Texas State Flower - "The Bluebonnets" are really blooming in this Central Texas area plus beautiful "Indian Blankets" with their red - hued color. They are all along Interstate 35 North through this vicinity and about 2 miles north of West (at County Line Road on the East Service Road) there is a triangle between the entrance to the service road just covered with Bluebonnets each Spring. It is a pleasure to drive by with the windows down in your vehicle and smell the wonderful, sweet odor of the area. Texas certainly chose an appropriate "State Flower." ***

In the 1984 convention of our SPJST, held in Corpus Christi, most of the delegates will remember the subject of your editor that our SPJST needs an "independent editor" elected by the delegates in order to have a free press as a "go - between" the Supreme Lodge and membership.

Here is a good example by what was meant by yours truly: In this issue is a letter from President Albert Risinger of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena questioning the motive of our SL encouraging the "direct billing" of our membership by the SL instead of the local lodge financial secretary of particular lodges. There are discussions "pro and con" on this issue from your editor's standpoint.

Frankly, to be honest, one wonders why the SL officers want to add this burden on themselves, however, evidently, they see some very sound advantages to that method of conducting business.

In agreement with Brother Risinger, the local lodge officers are closer to the membership, yet, ours is a business and a membership of a lodge should not be expected to "carry the cost" of a delinquent fellow member.

Here is a good example - The Supreme Lodge allows a lodge to carry a member for 3 months. After 3 months, if the local lodge carries that member and pays that member's dues, the local lodge is liable for the rest of the money it has paid for that member's dues!

Remember this - if that member dies, then the local lodge financial secretary has put the SL in an embarassing position, because the member has not been paying his/her dues, yet, the local lodge has not suspended that member!

There is a limit to how far fraternalism can go! Our sales representatives are also reminded to be careful in the choice of applicants.

Our SL officers are humane and also, businesslike and your editor is certain they would weigh each member's case on that member's merits before taking drastic unfraternal action. ***

Tornadoes can strike anywhere, at any time, but the peak months are April through June. If one of these sudden and deadly storms hits your area, the key to your survival could be advance planning.

The storms appear with such speed that official warnings may not be possible, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advises.

In fact, people in the storm's path may have only seconds to act.

At night or during heavy rain, the only clue that a tornado may be near could be its roar or the presence of large hailstones. When you hear either during a thunderstorm, it's best to assume a tornado is nearby and to seek shelter.

During thunderstorm weather, listen to radio, television or NOAA Weather Radio for the latest weather reports. If a tornado watch is issued, it means that conditions are ripe for tornado formation. Continue your daily routine, but be ready to move quickly to shelter. If a tornado warning -meaning a tornado has been sighted or spotted on radar -- is issued, move immediately to safe shelter. Be sure every member of the household knows what to do.

At the first sign of danger, move to the safest parts of the home -- the more protected interior bathrooms, closets, halls or basement areas. Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. Get under something sturdy -such as a large table -- for protection.

If a tornado catches you outside, lie flat in a ditch or other low ground.

Shield your head with your arms. Stay alert for flooding. If you are in a mobile home, get out. If you are in a car or truck, abandon it. Never try to outrun a tornado in a motor vehicle.

At schools, hospitals or shopping centers, move to designated shelter areas. In high - rise buildings, go to interior hallways or small rooms on as low a floor as possible. ***

Taxpayers who do volunteer work for charitable organizations may be able to deduct from their adjusted gross income many of the expenses they incur while performing the chores, reminds Deloitte Haskins & Sells. Deductable are: Automobile mileage, recently increased from 9 cents to 12 cents per mile; parking fees while performing charitable tasks; purchase and maintenance of uniforms, if required; costs of maintaining equipment directly related to charity service; long - distance telephone calls on behalf of charity, and the cost of meals and entertainment for guests involving charity business. You cannot deduct your own meal, and you cannot deduct the value of time given to charity. ***

A cup of Danncm low - fat, fruit flavored yogurt or a Milky Way candy bar -- which has the most added sugar?

Answer: The yogurt contains 7.8 teaspoons of added sugar; the candy bar has only 3.9 teaspoons. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington - based consumer group has published a full - color poster, called "Sugar Scoreboard," listing the amount of added sugar in more than 250 commonly eaten foods. Dear Members: In the March 6 issue of the Vestnik reference is being made to the letter "From The Vice President's Office" regarding direct billing.

This proposal was submitted to the last convention by the Insurance Committee and was adopted by all delegates at the convention. We hope that all of our SPJST members have read this article carefully and realize that direct billing is a very good tool for our Society.

Brother Gebala's article gives a very clear and logical explanation of the advantages of this system and our home office, with the computer and trained personnel , can do a very efficient job for all the lodges and their membership.

The issue of direct billing was brought up at Lodge 84, Dallas and was passed unanimously and we should be the fourth lodge to go on direct billing.

Along with all of the Supreme Insurance Lodge officers, the Committee also unanimously endorses direct bill; hopefully, all lodges in our Society will give direct billing serious consideration and as soon as possible.

Minutes Of District II Spring Meeting, Seaton Lodge 47, March 17 Uncorrected

The meeting was called to order by President D.I.Bohac at 2:12 p.m.

The colors were presented and the pledge to the flag was voiced by all present.

Jerry Pechal, president of Lodge 47, gave a welcoming address in which he indicated refreshments that were available at break time and the meal that would be served at the close of the meeting.

Roll call of officers indicated all present except 2nd Vice President Albert Lange.

The minutes of the Fall meeting were read and corrected to read: "the Spring meeting will be March 17, 1985."

The treasurer's report was given by Sister Dorothy Pechal and reflected a balance of $104.36 in the General Fund and $.26 in the Youth Fund.

Newly - Elected District II Director Willie E. Kohutek recognized 50 - year members (see attached) and gave a report of his progress in learning the "ins and outs" of everyday running of the organization. He gave mention to the Statue of Liberty project, the R&D Product Committee as they work on such new products as the single premium life, universal life and other certificates. Director Kohutek announced that the net assets of the SPJST had increased $2,536.332 in 1984. He awarded bonus checks to District II sales representatives.

Brother Willie said that there was 121/2 percent real estate money available.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky, youth District II, counselor of our announced that the Youth Achievement Day would be held at Lodge 18, Elgin, July 14th. Camping date has been set for August 2 - 8 at Camp Val Verde. The State YAD is to be at the Convention Center in Temple this year. A door prize for the youth was set at $6, $5, $4, $3 and $2 for this afternoon.

Brother Lad Zatopek gave a report for the Auditing Committee for the 1984 District II books which indicated that all books were in order. Also, serving on that committee were Ruby Bolton and Alice Banning. The books showed a correct balance of $311.56 -General Fund, and $.26 -- Youth Fund as of January 28, 1985.

Our new Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek indicated that, at the directors annual meeting December 8, 1984, the rest homes were in sound financial condition. Emergency generators have been installed in both homes. The directors meet 3 times per year. There exists a large waiting list of applicants for the homes.

Brother Sidney Kacir, our Home Office Legal Advisor and Home Office representative to our meeting lead off his report by, reading a report of deceased members from District II (see attached). He thanked those in attendance for our large showing.

Brother Kacir touched on the needs and requirements of our museum and library and asked for donations of articles and books denoting the Czech Heritage of our Society. He then presented checks to our District II in the amount of $3,531.35 for Youth Fund and $7,884.16 for 80 of the 1985 camp allocation.

President Bohac then recognized and welcomed Mary Leshikar, wife of Supreme Lodge President Howard and their sons, Ryan and Cody. Brother Howard was in Pennsylvania to attend the National. Fraternal Congress. He

also recognized Melvin Steger, assistant youth counselor.

Brother Gene McBride (State Field Manager) announced that he had been assigned to District II exclusively and that he would be training on a one - to - one basis with special emphasis on single premium and universal life policies.

President Bohac then called upon Sister Ruby Bolton of the Publication Committee who stated that the VESTNIK now had a circulation of approximately 10,000 and that the new publisher was printing for about $20,000 less than the previous contractor.

Brother Klinkovsky recognized the youth leaders present who received an applause of thanks.

There was no old business.

During a 30 - minute break period, members enjoyed green - tinted refreshments (this day was St. Patrick's Day) as provided free by Seaton Lodge No 47 and members were entertained by the youth from various lodges.

Following the break Brother Rudy Sefcik gave us a report on the new publisher for the Vestnik - Hill County Publishing and indicated that he was pleased to be working with them and was satisfied to - date with their capability and performance. He expressed displeasure with the postal rates and postal service in the Waco area.

Following Brother Sefcik, President Bohac called for election of officers.

First Vice President Ronnie Rieger took the floor and called for nominations for president. President Bohac was nominated and selected by acclamation.

President Bohac then called for nominations for 1st vice president.

Lad Zatopek moved to have all present officers elected by acclamation, except 2nd vice president. Motion carried.

Brother Lad then nominated Brother Al Giarrusso for 2nd vice president. He was elected by acclamation.

After the election, the following District II officers were installed by Brother Kacir: President -- D.I. Bohac (80) 1st Vice President -- Ronnie Rieger (29) 2nd Vice President -- Al Giarrusso (187) Secretary -- Morris Boutwell (18) Treasurer -- Dorothy Pechal (47) Following the installation, President Bohac appointed Lad Zatopek, Ruby Bolton and Alice Banning to the Auditing Committee; they agreed to serve, again.

Dan Balusek was nominated for Rest Home Director by Jerry Pechal.

He was elected by acclamation.

Lodge 29, Taylor was selected for the site for the Fall meeting.

On a point of order, Brother Kacir indicated that the Flag Bearers John

Drawing of door prizes by the youth concluded the meeting. Motion to adjourn carried.

Seaton Lodge No. 47 provided the basis of a fine meal which all enjoyed.

Pasadena, Texas March 15, 1985 In response to "From The Vice President's Office" pertaining to SPJST and Direct Bill in the Wednesday, March 6, 1985 Vestnik, it was stated not political and made the most anti - fraternal political pitch I have ever read.

I agree the decision has to be made by the membership. Each local lodge has a varied membership, therefore, has an entirely different set of needs.

You don't serve a group of people's every day needs with a dollar sign and a computer. They are served by the elected officers who should know his or her lodge's needs personally; if you know your job, you shouldn't have to pay a consultant to tell you how to run your job.

I don't know how extensive the investigation was on the effect of direct bill on our lodge system. I do know Lodge 172 was not consulted, prior to installation of direct billing, and being made an iss"e to be voted on by local lodges.

Therefore I don't know how the data supplied to the consulting firm could have been a compiled report on all lodges.

We need to be cost conscious and penny - wise. We will lose valuable members because a computer is told "that" person has not paid their premium. Each member has a right to be represented by an officer of their choice, elected by their right to vote under the Bylaws of this Society. This is a fraternal organization and not the electric company.

Please read preamble on page 2 of your Bylaws of the SPJST XXIV Convention and then tell me direct billing is in the best interest of this Society to not carry some member, who for reason or circumstance beyond their control, will lose their protection and membership in their local lodge because we want to be modern and push the unfeeling button to cut them off.

To say the Supreme Lodge doesn't advocate the elimination of the local financial secretary and, later on in article say the needs of members cannot be met if we continue to use the system of financial secretary to collect assessments, doe's define what the Supreme Lodge has in mind.

With interest products becoming more common in the insurance industry, each local lodge should be told that these products are of no benefit monetarily to them..

I would hope that all members join together and keep our fraternal lodge Society viable and competitive in the future. The decision "IS" with the membership and it is hoped that the best interest of the SPJST will prevail.

4, Hallettsville Meets Lodge

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, March 10, 1985 at the Grant Bldg. President Linda Mikush called the meeting to order followed by the pledge to the U.S. flag led by Janelle and Gary Chudej.

Gaye Galetka read resolutions of sympathy for our departed members, Albina Mikush and Annie Stanzel.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved followed by correspondence. Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave reports.

Annie Vahalik was elected vice president to replace Linda Mikush who became president after the death of President Frank Zabransky.

After additional discussion, the meeting was adjourned. Games were played with refreshments and lunch being served.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, April 14th at the Grant Bldg. beginning at 2 p.m. Members are encouraged to attend.

It was announced that Mr. and Mrs. Milton Zavodny are grandparents again. Congratulations, grandma and grandpa!

Celebrating anniversaries in March were Lynn and Arleen Tschoerner and Joe and Bernise Sebek. Birthdays were for Robert Macek, David Vanicek and Millie Schiller; congratulations to all of you. I hope you had a wonderful day.

The members decided to have a dinner for the 50 - year members at 4 p.m. July 21st. All the members are asked to bring a salad and dessert; the hall will furnish meat and bread.

The reports were given by the committee chairmen and all are doing well.

The members voted to give donations to the area Crime Stoppers, March of Dimes, Heart Fund and the Bell Boosters.

Door prizes were won by Brandie Gotcher, Craig Waits, Gladys Tyroch and Billy Smetanka.

Our next meeting will be April 10th at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring snacks for after the meeting. I hope to see you then.

28, East Bernard To Meet Lodge

Dear Members: Easter falls on the first Sunday in April this year, therefore, the local rule on meetings and meeting dates will apply. Our April meeting, only, will be the second Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall. The agenda will have

some additional special reports, covering several subjects besides the subjects covered under the regular reports.

The "Kaffeeklatsch" will convene by the buffet serving table after the meeting.

The March monthly meeting was March 3rd. Although many things were brought up, the meeting time was short (less than an hour). There was a recitation and discussion on the Premium Refund Checks and Paid up Insurance, included in a report.

Additional information was requested, so there will be more on this subject in the April meeting. All regular reports were accepted as given. One motion was made and passed to take care of some lodge business. It was announced that the lodge sales representatives were to attend a seminar in El Campo; also announced was the District VI spring meeting in Moravia (the 24th).

There was a reminder to everyone present about the April meeting date change because of Easter.

Brother Frank Brdecka won the door prize and, in turn, donated it to the special kitchen fund.

The "Kaffeeklatsch" and food went off on schedule with those partaking enjoying themselves. Sisters Haverda, Kortis, Brdecka, Janik, Srubar, Luquette and Nezval again enhancing the table with their donation of food that more than supplemented the food supplied by the lodge. Thanks again, sisters!

At the first of this year Sister Srubar donated a serving tray to the lodge kitchen. This writer was informed of this in the last meeting, so a belated thanks goes to her.

Dear Vestnik Friends and Readers: The March 20th meeting of the El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40 began promptly at 7:30 p.m. President James Kulcak started with the Pledge of Allegiance and followed with a minute of silence.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers. One officer was absent.

The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as reported in the Vestnik, with one revision.

The June covered dish dinner may not take place due to the busy schedule of our Entertainment Chairman. If you have time, please volunteer to help her.

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all bank accounts and all expenses paid. Also, she will be taking care of the tax forms as needed. A vote to pay a larger payment to the Supreme Lodge this month quickly passed. The note is for the new addition. The new tables and chairs arrived and are now in use. It's wonderful to see the old hall so busy with all the activities.

We welcome new members Robert E. Richter, Landus Treadwell and Sheryl Treadwell.

Youth Leader Vlasta Bartos reported the youth club will be having a booth, sale and skit at the District VI spring meeting and they are busy preparing for YAD. They are financially sound, but the lodge gave them $50 for future expenses.

A communication from LeeRoy Matocha was received. We will be having a dance September 22nd from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 11th is the date for the Vanek Brothers/Texas Plainsmen Battle Dance. We are looking forward to good music and fun dancing.

Brother Frank Krauskopf was the winner of this month's door prize.

Our next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. April 17th. This month's attendance was larger than usual; I'm expecting a better turnout next month.

Dear Vestnik Readers: Your Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje reporter attended the District VI meeting in Moravia. For all of you who were unable to attend; let me tell you, you missed a great meeting! The ride was beautiful! The flowers were in full bloom and the sun was warm and pleasant. As usual, our host lodge, Moravia, provided wonderful food and excellent service. People were happy and smiling all day.

The youth groups entertained with fun skits and were a joy to watch.

Everyone responded with enthusiasm to the sale, also.

Our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar was in attendance and brought greetings from the other officers; Brother Matt Vanek and wife, Henrietta, were also there. This was the day for the election of officers.

Sister Ardis Bacak of our lodge is the new Distict VI president. We wish her and the other officers all our best. I think they will all work well together.

Thanks to the fellowship and fun we all shared; this was a wonderful weekend for me.

Choral Group Dear Members: At the regular practice Tuesday night, Annie Jakubec accompanied us on the piano. We sang many of our favorite songs some of which we had not sung in quite a while. They brought back fond memories.

Lodge 87, Temple March Meeting Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 87 held its regular meeting Friday, March 8, at 7 p.m. with President Viasta Jez presiding.

The meeting was called to order; Jerry Valchar, flagbearer, led the lodge in reciting The Pledge of Allegiance, and the deceased members were remembered by a silent tribute.

Guests were Mary Reznicek and Millie Schiller.

A special welcome to new members John C. Thomas, Jr. (additional insurance), Jason O'Henry (additional insurance), Jennifer Marie Henry (additional insurance), and Bobby Eugene Bell.

Various reports were given and old and new business subjeCts were discussed.

The topic of direct billing was discussed and voted on. The lodge voted to go direct billing.

The April meeting will be special so try to attend. Our lodge will honor fifty - year member Betty Havlik. A covered dish meal will be served.

Members are asked to bring a dish of meat, vegetable and dessert for family and guests. The lodge will furnish bread and beverages. The meal will be served around 6:30 p.m. so mark this date on your calendar.

Our special get - well wishes are extended to Marvin Labaj and all who are convalescing.

I just have to say a word about the beautiful spring look nature is taking on - the green grass, trees, and beautiful blue - bonnets and wild flowers, just so lovely after our severe winter cold weather - so many beautiful things to observe!

Houston Another busy weekend has ended at Lodge 88. The JAN GARBER ORCHESTRA, directed by Dick Wickman, was almost a "Standing Room Only" crowd Saturday night, March 23rd.

This orchestra is one of the top dance bands appearing in the Chandelier Ballroom and a large crowd of dancers, again, filled the dance floor.

The first Committee Party of 1985 was held Sunday, March 24th. This party is a reward for the officers and standing committees of the lodge for their hard work and the dedication to their responsibilities over the year. The DONNIE VAVRA ORCHESTRA played and a delicious meal was served

by Wehring Caterers. The music kept everyone on the dance floor while these hard - working members enjoyed their party.

Frankie Sembera announced, to his friends, that he had retired from the Houston Police Department after thirty years and was moving to Flatonia with his new wife, the former Bernice Freytag. They were married in Hallettsville, March 16th. We wish the happy couple much happiness and good health.

5th; and LeeRoy Matocha will appear there Saturday, April 6th, The Youth Club's Easter Egg Hunt is Easter Sunday, April 7th at 2:30 p.m. Toddlers to age 12 are welcome. I believe all of Rudy and Celestine Darilek's twenty - one grandchildren are in that age group. I can just see that young - looking Grandma with all her little ones chasing the Easter Bunny and looking for the Easter eggs.

The MANNY GREEN ORCHESTRA and The AL PIERSON BIG BAND USA tickets are now on sale in the lodge office. Make your reservations early for your choice table.

The Blue Room Committee has scheduled another Sing - A - Long for April 26th and a Blue Room Party for Sunday, May 5th. Tickets are on sale for this event in the Blue Room, in the lodge office and through the Blue Room Committee members. I'll have more details on this party, later.

Brother Roy and Sister Lydia just returned from their trip in Europe and reported having a wonderful time.

They were really welcomed back at Bingo Friday night. They are great and loyal workers.

One of our young members, Amy Krupka, is on a 2 - week tour of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and London with a group from Texas Wesleyan College. Amy is the daughter of Brother Jerry and Sister Nancy Krupka; her proud grandmother is Sister Mary Botik.

We were happy to hear Brother Albert Wruble was released from the hospital Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. Take care, Albert! We also extend our get - well wishes to Brothers Albert Wruble and Richard Hubenak of Lodge 92 who are in the hospital.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Sister Frances Jaworski of Lodge 92. May she rest in peace.

Hope we have nice weather for the picnic, everyone looks forward to this every year.

Liver Transplant Benefit Dance The SPJST Lodge No. 172, 3609 Preston in Pasadena, is requesting the help of all the people interested in helping to save the life of a tiny boy named Travis Shannon of Normangee, Texas, who will be one year old April 18, 1985. He was born with a defective liver, his condition is called Biliary Atresia.. He has undergone surgery twice already. The doctors are hoping that what they have done for him so far will hold him until a liver becomes available. He is on the waiting list at the two hospitals that do liver transplants - one in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the other in Dallas, Texas.

He is a precious, bright little boy who flashes a snaggle - toothed grin while he offers a tiny handshake to everyone he meets.

His parents were told that the transplant operation will exceed $250,000 needing at least $60,000 of that up - front. But without the transplant operation the chance of survival beyond his second birthday is very slim. Don and Andi Shannon, the parents of little Travis, are wearing their "beepers" hoping for a signal that a donor liver that is compatible.

Lodge 177, Academy Finalizes Plans For Anniversary President Bill Hutka called the March 13th meeting of Lodge 177, Academy to order at 7:32 p.m. There were 24 members present and they all recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Bill Hutka extended our sympathy to Adele Tyroch on the death of her husband.

In roll call of officers all were present. Minutes from the last meeting were approved as read and communications were received from the Bill Tyroch family and the First Methodist Laymen of Little River.

Ticket chairperson Frances Love was absent due to the hospitalization of her daughter, Becky. Get well soon, Becky!

All reports were approved much over other years.

President Bill Hutka gave a lot of praise to Libbie Bartek for the up - to the minute work done on the Sunshine Committee.

Fourteen members were present at the youth club meeting; they will have an Easter egg and scavenger huni March 30th.

Three new members were accepted, namely, Kasey D. Bland, Summer M. Bland and Mary A. Summers.

A vote was taken on direct deposit and it passed.

In the Board of Trustees' report, the carpet in the foyer (entry way) has been removed and tile will be installed; anyone wanting to help ) feel free to do so.

The ladies of the lodge are still doing exercise at the lodge three nights a week and really, are enjoying themselves.

The trustees discussed the Child Abuse contributions and felt we have been in violation of our lodge Rules & Regulations; Article 12 -- "Make no more than two donations a year to any organization"and felt we should spread our donations into other charitable organizations and certainly there are many that could be helped from our bingo fund and would be as grateful to our help. We, at Lodge 177, are notably proud of all the help we have given the Child Abuse program and feel they will understand when our donations are spread out to cover others.

Plans have been finalized for our Lodge 177 tenth anniversary celebration. Our youth club will be serving barbecue plates and sandwiches from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

Sunday, April 21st; dancing from 2 to 4 p.m. by the Gentres, and from 5 to 10 p.m. with music by the Hi - Toppers; admission is FREE for the dance.

On the sick list Geneva Bragg and Pat Sill are in the hospital for surgery; our thoughts are with you and hope for a speedy recovery. These two ladies will be missed around the lodge hall because they have been hard workers and are among the members who are making sure that Lodge 183 will be here for our children and grandchildren in the future.

I would like to tell you about another one of our members, Dorothy Kral who has been chosen as St. Matthews "Church - Woman of the Year" for 1985. She will be honored along with other church women at coffee in April and at a celebration in May. All women of the parish will be initiated to these activities.The Lodge 183 members congratulate Dorothy for being chosen for this honor.

The officers pointed out to me that I haven't been reporting our regular donation each month; that is the $441.22 monthly payment on the Van that the lodge donated to the Star House, and the donations that I have been reporting from time to time are in addition to these regular payments.

Remember the dance Saturday, April 20th with music by 'Last Call'; this is a very good band and the one who so many of you asked to have play for you again.

As they say: "Cheer up, things could be worse." So I cheered up the other day and, sure enough, things got worse. Keep Smiling!

Dear Members: Some of you will be pleased to know that we are finally going to pave the back part of our parking lot; don't know exactly when they will be able to start because of the wet weather we've had here and other places in Texas, but maybe in the next few weeks, OK? We also have one member in the hospital - Brother Joe Machann in for tests and other things. We hope it isn't serious; maybe by the time this is in print he will be home. He is the husband of our secretary, Sister Vlasta Machann. Get well and come home soon, Joe! We miss you and so does your family.

We also have had one member who spent some time in the hospital, namely, Willie (Bill) Kowalsky who is at home now and getting around. He had heart trouble and was in a bad way but, Bill, we're glad to see you get around.

Willie Walla, who broke his leg in January during our huge snow storm, has been confined to his bed pretty well since. We heard that his cast will be changed soon so he can motivate a lot better. We miss both Willies around the lodge and wish you all good health.

We will be having a social April 14, 1985, with the usual good barbecue preparations being served from 1 to 3 p.m.; a dance from 3 to 7 p.m. with music by Vaneks, so you all come!

This will be FREE to Lodge 172 members; for guests a $6 per adult, and $3 per child.

I also want to remind everyone about the Benefit Dance to be held May 5th for young TRAVIS SHANNON who needs a liver transplant; he is 10 months old.

Tickets for this benefit will be $7.50 per person. The dance will be from 2 to 8 p.m. with three bands; namely, Just Country, Texas Brew, and Pure Texas.Tell all your friends about it and let's have a big turnout!

Circle, Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies

Dear Members and Friends: Due to the absence of President Florence Greer, our meeting was opened by Vice President Dona Hubenak. The treasurer's report was given by Evelyn Spacek and Secretary Frances Grizzard read the minutes.

Both were approved as read.

Lillie McMillen gave her report of get - well cards sent to Rosie Zalesak and Mrs. Rozetta Greer. Frances Jaworski was reported back in intensive care at Saint Joseph's Hospital.

It was reported by Esta Belle Hubenak that she and Clara Cohen were appointed by Lodge No. 92 to supervise displays of any scrapbooks, antiques, or information pertaining to the progress of our Lodge 92 from its origin to the present time to be used at our 75th anniversary in the fall. They are asking members to bring in anything that they might have to be used at this time and it will be returned to them.

A motion was made by Hermina Cihacek to give $50 to "Kash for Kids." Mary Powers seconded the motion. The motion carried.

The door prize was donated by Mary Powers and was won by Elma Anderson. Clara Cohen will donate the door prize for April.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Josephine Prochaska, Mary Botik, Maria Prill, Catherine Kasarek, Inez Krivanek and Rose Jaworski.

We are glad to welcome Elma Anderson, Mary Dunlap and Ina Lou Laplait as new members.

Betty Billingston gave a knowledgeable and interesting talk on "Alcoholism and Abuse of Drugs" in our country and the effect on our lives.

Our attention was called to the 50th anniversary of the Dallas Circle of Czech Women (Zensky Krouzek). The reception and program will be held April 14, 1985 at the Sokol Athletic Center, 7448 Greenville Avenue, Dallas. The time is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. We were cordially invited and anyone who wishes to attend should report to Florence Greer, phone 268 2011 right away; unfortunately, our regular Lodge 92 meeting will be that same date.

Since our meeting, we were sorry to hear of the death of one of our longtime members, Frances Jaworski, who was the sister of Rose Jaworski and Helen Paprskar. Also, one of our former members, Rozetta Greer, passed away. She was the mother and mother - in - law of James and Florence Greer. We wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to both families.

Hostesses for April will be Esta Belle Hubenak, Inez Krivanek, Annie Langer and Clara Cohen.

Ennis Sewing Circle The

The Ennis Sewing Circle carried through their usual meeting which takes place every second Thursday of each month. The same officers were elected and voted for 1985 again.

Twenty - nine members attended our March meeting. Thank you, Liddie Pavelka for taking the notes for me in February. It is a pleasure to have a friend like you.

An invitation was read from Dallas Circle of Czech Women inviting our Ennis Club to attend the reception and program honoring their 50th anniversary. This will be held Sunday April 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. You must RSVP by April 1st. This takes place at the Sokol Athletic Center, 7448 Greenville, Dallas, Texas.

Polka Festival is coming up in Ennis. If you are in the arts and craft making, and would like to donate, please bring handmade things to the club meeting by April meeting; from experience, children's gifts always go real well.

It was announced by Stacie Hejny that March 30th there will be a huge arts and craft show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ennis Sokol Hall. Everyone, including members and non members, is cordially invited.

The Ennis Sewing Circle is planning to have a money - raising sale at our June meeting. The club's quilt was made this month for that purpose and tickets are $1 per ticket. The sale will also include arts and crafts, white elephant, and baked goods, so members, let's make this a good occasion; the club needs to donate the proceeds to a charitable organization in Ennis. It is a type of community service •that the Sewing Circle participates in each year. Also. members, keep in touch with one another in case of date change on this.

It was also announced that any member over 80 need not pay dues unless you choose to. Door prizes were donated by Margie Macalik, Georgia Morales, Alice Roberts and Mary Polasek. These prizes were won by Stazie Jurcik, Betty Houdek and Helen Jaresh.

Ann Zvolanek read a short story called "More Truth Than Fiction."

In the February meeting Alice Roberts read one entitled "Those Old Model Ts." Ann and Alice are good club members and are sisters,plus they have a lot of sisters, including a sister in - law, Vallie Tupy. Everyone is a club member except the sister living out - of - state, so the Tupy family, (seven of them) have broken the record as far as membership. Libbie Wisnieski, "you are not forgotten, either"!

Our next quilt will be quilted for Mary Bouska in April. She is still recuperating from her illness, but is day by day progressing. Birthday wishes went to all who had birthdays in January, February and March. We hope you have many more.

Long after the pain was forgotten, the flavor was remembered and friends and neighbors learned of the new tasty pastry. Soon, the fame of the kolac (do kola) spread throughout the Austro Hungarian Empire and even into the New World.

The kolac follows a Czech from the cradle to the grave. A baby is given one to use as teething ring. Platefuls baked by mother, grandmothers, aunts and cousins load the table at christenings, confirmations, graduations and weddings. Grandpa dunks his kolac in a cup of coffee to make the chewing easier. At his wake, mourners comfort their grief with the tasty morsel.

Dr. Vladimir Kucera of Lincoln, Nebraska, an authority on customs and folklore of Czechs, observed recently that: "Here in America, the kolach is taken for granted as just part of every day living.

"Over there, the kolach is something special - a dish to be blessed by the priest on Easter Sunday." ***

Leaders Attend LRL AT Brownwood Youth

Nine people attended the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory as guests of the Supreme Lodge during the weekend of March 8 - 10. District Youth Counselor Janet Marek also attended the lab during the week long session.

Members attending participated in in songs, games, workshops

ceremonies and leadership. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, State Youth Director Sue Meadows and Emil Petr participated in an archery course and became Certified Archery Instructors. Members gained a wealth of information and new ideas to share with other youth leaders at the Youth Leader's Retreat and throughout the year with others in their district. All those attending want to extend a thank you to the Supreme Lodge for the opportunity to attend LRL.

District IV DYC To Host Youth Leader's Training The District IV Youth Leader's Training will be held April 6 at my home, beginning at 9 a.m. until??.

13, Dime Box Youth Holds Meeting Lodge

The Dime Box Lodge No. 13 Youth Club held its last monthly meeting March 17, 1985. The meeting was held at 3:10 p.m. President Penny Spitzenberger called the meeting to order. Susan Spacek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll call was then called. There were seventeen members, two visitors, and six adults present.

Due to there being no secretary, there were no minutes read. Then the treasurer gave her report.

There was no old business. The new business was that we will be going to "Ice Capades." We will go April 20th, and leave the SPJST Hall at 11 a.m., and eat at McDonald's in Austin.

Mrs. Susan Skrabanek then came, and we discussed camp and YAD. She had a game planned for us. The winner was Shawna Thurman.

Door prizes were then won by: 1st -Wesley Ford, 2nd -- Lamar Hervey and 3rd -- Delia Wiederhold.

The meeting was adjourned by Susan Spacek and Trudy Krenek.

Letters From The Youth Bryan Club Discusses Activities Dear Readers, Lodge 39 held its monthly meeting Sunday, March 10, at the lodge home.

Dear Vestnik Readers: This week at our lodge, Lodge 74, Lovelady, we planned a community project. The younger members of our lodge made Easter baskets filled with many Easter, goodies for the residents of a local nursing home.

Dear Vestnik Readers: Our lodge is busy getting ready for YAD. We are going to have a clogging routine entered in Group Talent and we have many individual talents that are entering. We also are going to have craft entries in several age groups.

A group of cloggers from our lodge are learning a harder routine to "The Cotton - Eyed Joe" to perform at a barbecue activity in a neighboring town, May 4th.

Reunion Lesikar - Shiller Reunion The 95th Lesikar - Shiller Reunion will be held April 21st at the Firemen's Park Hall in New Ulm, Austin County, Texas. If all preparations will be complete in time, there will be a dedication of a historical marker on the gravesite of Josef Lidumil Lesikar in the New Ulm Cemetery. At the present time the completion date is not known. People attending the reunion are to bring a meat dish or a vegetable dish or sweet. A lifelong printer and farmer, Brother Safar had retired in 1972 after 31 years employment with the Victoria Advocate. He had previously worked for other Texas newspapers, including The El Campo News, The Schulenburg Sticker and The Houston Chronicle.

After his retirement from the Advocate, he owned and operated Safar Printing Company in Victoria.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

December 5 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Arnold Anders officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park under the direction of McCabe Carruth Funeral Home.

Born April 24, 1909, in Taiton, Brother Safar had been a resident of Victoria for the past 45 years and was a member of the mayor's Victoria Image Committee. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and participated in the Usher's Club, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and other parish activities.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 143 before transferring to SPJST Lodge No. 32. He also was a member of the Typographic Union and the Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Vaclav and Victoria Svoboda Safar.

Pallbearers were Joe Jurica, Buddy Brinkman, Charles Schroeder, Charles Moscatelli, Elmer Johnson and Clarence Atzenhoffer.

Honorary pallbearers were Parvin Ressig, Jerome Krenek, Raymond Knowles and Claude Riley.

He is survived by his wife, Clara S. Safar of Victoria; two daughters, Carolyn S. Peterson of San Antonio and Gwendolyn Ann Reinke of Stafford and three grandchildren.

MILTON ARNOLD SUROVIK, who died in a Lancaster hospital March 1, 1985 at the age of 68.

Brother Surovik was born in Caldwell, Texas. He was a retired Civil Service Employee. He served in the Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Leta Mae Surovik of Dallas; four sons, James Kovar of Dallas, Jimmy Kovar of Lancaster, Ronald Kovar and Thomas Kovar, both of Dallas; two daughters, Betty Robbins of Bonham and Wanda Stewart of Dallas; a brother, Walter Surovik of Dallas; a sister, Frances Slominski of Bryan; 10 grandchildren and three great - grandchildren, also two nieces and two nephews.

Services were held March 2, at Macon - Douglas Funeral Home Chapel in Dallas with the Rev. R.A. Stacey officiating. Burial was in Laurel Oaks Memorial Park in Mesquite.

The entire membership of Lodge 97, Placedo wishes to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister VENUS SHARP, who passed away March 13, 1985, in a Houston hospital at the age of 63, after a short illness.

Sister Sharp, who had taught school 28 years (25 years with the Bloomington School District), retired in May 1983.

Born November 5, 1921, she was a lifelong resident of Victoria County, and a member of SPJST since 1937; she was preceded in death by her parents, John J. and Rosie Esterak Marek.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 15 from the Colonial Funeral Home in Victoria with the Rev. Matthew McNaught of Austin officiating. Burial was in Colonial Gardens Cemetery.

Sister Sharp is survived by her husband, M.L. Sharp of Placedo; a daughter, Marsha Sharp of Austin; Mark Sharp of Placedo and State Senator John Sharp of Victoria; three brothers, Erwin Marek and Johnny Marek. of Corpus Christi and Myles Marek of Aransas Pass and one grandson.

Pallbearers were G.J. Ayo, Joe Dial, Bill Broome, E.R. Skloss, Jess Jordam, Bob Harraid, John Hnatek and Lester Fuzzell.

Brother Holacka was born March 8, 1933 at Penelope, Texas. At the age of 12 he moved to West with his parents.

January 21, 1952 he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Hanzelka.

Brother Holacka was an appraiser, Tarrant Apprasial District, Certified Tax Assessor, member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Bishop Dunne Council Knights of Columbus No. 2813, KJT and SPJST Lodge No. 180.

Brother Holacka was a musician and loved polka music. In 1974 he and a few musician friends organized a band and enjoyed playing for private parties, dances and weddings.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Holacka; son, Donald E. Holacka of Fort Worth; daughter, Mrs. Helen Holacka 011rich of Austin; four step grandchildren; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim G. Holacka of West; and a brother, James Holacka of Dallas.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Rev. B.J.Zientek, celebrant. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. in West at the Kotch Funeral Home Chapel, and graveside services and interment were held at 3 p.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Arrangements were under the direction of Harveson and Cole of Fort Worth.

Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Brother Pavelka was born June 12, 1915 in Dallas, the son of Jim and Mary Hertl Pavelka. In 1918 he moved to Ennis with his parents and graduated from Ennis High School in 1932. He then graduated from Texas A&M College in 1936. After graduating from A&M he went to work for the SPRR. In 1940 he went to work for the U.S. Post Office. He was married to Miss Libbie Petr of Creechville June 15, 1941. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre of War. He was discharged in 1945. After his discharge he returned to work at the U.S. Post

Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: Spring is here and our softball team has already had three workouts. We are hoping to field another very good team in the Dallas Commercial Fast Pitch City Major League. We will be playing either Tuesday or Wednesday nights; however nothing has been finalized until we receive our schedules.

The annual Softball Team Benefit Dance will be held Saturday night, April 20 at Lodge 84, 2625 Floyd Street. The Czech Harvesters Orchestra will perform playing those polkas, waltzes and country/western tunes. We desperately need the funds to enable us to make it through the season. Please make plans now to attend our dance; that is Saturday, April 20th. It is very important that we have a large turnout and we know you will have a good time. Your support has been given to us for 32 years now, and we hope it will continue.

Measles Outbreak In Brownsville A measles (Rubeola) outbreak has been reported in the Brownsville area.

One case has been confirmed in a senior high school student, and 37 other possible cases are under investigation. More than 99 percent of the Brownsville area students have been immunized, but there is evidence the virus may be , spreading to infants and preschoolers.

Measles is a viral illness easily spread from person - to - person, usually by sneezing and coughing. Symptoms usually include a characteristic red rash, fever, runny nose, cough or red, inflamed eyes. Persons with influenza symptoms and rash - fever illnesses should seek medical attention. Persons diagnosed as having measles should remain isolated for four days after the appearance of the rash to protect others from exposure. Persons exposed to a suspected case of measles and who have not been immunized

Milk Is Hazardous, Not Healthful Raw

Raw milk has become one of the newest -- and most hazardous -- fad foods for the health -- conscious.

Raw milk has always been available to consumers who went looking for it, says nutritionist Dr. Dymple Cooksey, but now it is being promoted as a 'health' food.

Some people claim that raw milk has a higher nutritive value than the pasteurized kind, says the TAMU Agricultural Extension Service nutrition specialist. In addition, it supposedly protects against dental decay, provides greater resistance to disease, contains a higher enzyme and hormone content and includes an "anti - stiffness" factor, she says.

These claims -for raw milk either have no scientific basis or are greatly over - rated, Cooksey declares.

A study by researchers at the Center for Infectious Diseases has demonstrated the alarming risks of drinking raw milk, she reports. Eleven bacterial diseases, including salmonella, tuberculosis and staphylococcal infections are shown to be spread by contaminated raw milk.

Since the most important component of unadulterated raw milk is germs, people interested in their health should drink the safe, pasteurized product, advises the specialist.

Savings For Dependent Adult Care Tax

Many families who care for a dependent elderly relative at home do not know there is a federal income tax credit designed to help them, says gerontologist Dr. Judith Warren.

The dependent care tax credit, also called the child care or day care credit, is often assumed to be for working parents of young children, she says.

But it can also be used by persons caring for an adult dependent who is incapable of self - care.

Warren, a specialist with the TAMU Agricultural Extension Service home economics program, says that to claim the credit, your home must have been the principal residence of both you and the person receiving the care.

In addition, the expenses must be work - related and you must have provided over half of the person's support for the year. The credit can also be used for out - of - home adult care in many cases, Warren notes.

The credit is claimed on Form 2441 if you use the "long form" (Form 1040), or Schedule 1, Part IV if you use the "short form" (Form 1040A).

The specialist says that persons needing assistance with this or other income tax questions may contact the Internal Revenue Service toll - free from anywhere in Texas at 1 - 800 - 424 -1040.

Handling Easter Eggs And Ham COLLEGE STATION -- Hard cooked eggs and ham are familiar foods that get special treatment at Easter. It's this "special treatment" of decorating and hiding Easter eggs or serving a fresh ham for a large family gathering that raises questions about food safety, says nutritionist Dr. Dymple Cooksey.

According to Cooksey, a specialist with the TAMU Agricultural Extension Service, consumers commonly have the following questions about food safety for these Easter treats: Q: Is it safe to eat the hard - cooked eggs used in an Easter egg hunt?

A: Yes, but they must be handled properly. First, . :cool hard - cooked eggs in cold water immediately after cooking and then refrigerate until they cool all the way through. If any eggs crack while cooking, don't use them for the hunt since bacteria can easily get through the openings and contaminate the eggs.

When you plan the hiding and hunting of Easter eggs, remember , that they should not be out of the refrigerator for more than two hours.

Q: How long will hard- cooked eggs keep in the refrigerator?

A: Hard - cooked eggs in the shell should be used within one week. Use eggs with cracked shells or those with the shell removed within one day.

Q: Is there any danger of trichinosis from hams?

A: If you choose a fully cooked ham, there is no danger.

Both uncooked and leftover ham can be kept in the freezer up to two months before losing flavor and texture.

Changes In Cured Ham Labeling COLLEGE STATION -- Beginning April 15, the U. S. Department of Agriculture will regulate the amount of curing solution in ham and other cured pork products by requiring minimum protein levels.

The new rule requires measuring the protein in the finished product, instead of estimating the amount of curing solution used in processing, says

TAMU Agricultural Extension Service nutrition specialist Dr. Dymple Cooksey.

Current regulations permit no more than 10 percent curing solution in a finished pork product labeled "Water Added," she says.

Under the new regulations, the specialist says that consumers will be able to choose from four categories of canned ham.

"Ham" is defined as at least 20.5 percent protein. This is the same amount of protein found in fresh ham.

"Ham with Natural Juices" is at least 18.5 percent protein.

"Ham - Added Water" is at least 17 percent protein. Hams with a 10 percent curing solution added contain this amount of protein.

"Ham and Water Product" is any canned ham with less than 17 percent protein. The actual percentage of added ingredients must be stated on the label.

Many consumers prefer a more moist pork product and this new rule responds to that market demand, Cooksey says.

She explains that the new rule also assures consumers of minimum protein content in a cured pork product. Since the curing solution dilutes the protein content of the fresh, uncured pork, the rule provides control over the amount of solution used.

Curing solution consists of a mixture of water, salt, nitrate and phosphate and is added to pork during processing to help preserve the meat and to impart the traditional flavor and color, Cooksey says.

Buyers Can Cancel Door-To-Door Purchases A new set of pots and pans, a Bible, burglar alarm or family photo album may seem like a good idea when a salesperson brings them to your door.

But what if you decide you don't want or can't afford the merchandise you buy from a door - to - door salesperson? You can cancel your order if you don't delay, says a Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service consumer economics specialist.

A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ruling allows a three - day "cooling off" period to cancel if the purchase is $25 or more, says Bonnie L. Piernot.

This rule applies only to door - to door sales and not to in - store sales.

The salesperson must provide a fully completed contract including the date of the sale, name and address of the seller, and a statement in large business type explaining the right to cancel within three days by written notice, she advises.

The salesperson must also give you two copies of a separate notice of cancellation form, Piernot says. Then when you want to cancel the sale, simply send the notice by certified mail with return receipt requested so you can prove you cancelled it.

The specialist points out that the contract and notice must be-in the same language the salesperson uses in the sales pitch.

If you have made payment, the seller must refund the money within 10 business days of receiving your cancellation notice, Piernot says. And after cancelling the sale, you must have the merchandise -- in the same condition that you reCeived it -available for the salesperson to pick up at your home.

If you agree to ship the item back, the seller must pay the shipping costs.

But if the merchandise is not picked up within 20 days, you may keep the goods without obligation, she says.

Piernot emphasizes that the rule does not cover total sales under $25, sales of insurance and securities, sales of telephone orders and sales made entirely by mail.

Texas Farmers' Union Under Financial Stress The story of agriculture in Texas is the same as in other states -- farmers are under severe financial stress.

While gross farm income in Texas stood at about $11 billion in 1984 (the same as in 1979), net income totaled only about $1 billion -- half of what it was five years ago. Thus the purchasing power of Texas agriculture is about 25 to 30 percent of what it was in 1979.

The current farm financial stress in Texas and across the nation stems largely from depressed crop and livestock prices, steady increases in costs, adverse weather conditions and high real interest rates that not only increase costs but also strengthen the dollar's value, points out Dr. Carl Anderson. Anderson is an economist with the TAMU Agricultural Extension Service.

Agricultural prices have suffered from abundant supplies and weak demand, says Anderson. While average prices farmers have received for crops and livestock have fallen slightly during the past five years, prices they paid for supplies and machinery increased almost a third.

Increased debt and production losses due to adverse weather (such as last year's drought) have put heavy financial stress on many Texas farmers, the economist points out.

Texas farm debt has risen nearly 50 percent since 1979. Debt was about five times greater than net farm income in Texas in 1979; since 1982 it has been running close to 15 times greater.

At the same time net returns, which traditionally are around 3 to 5 percent, have dropped to less than 1 percent or have been negative over the last several years. These low returns to investment are showing up in lower land values in less populated areas where agricultural production is the main land use.

With debt - laden producers in dire financial straits, the need for emergency and guaranteed farm loans and other forms of financial assistance is the greatest since the Great Depression, Anderson says.

A Study Of The Culture Of The Czech Moravian Community Of Texas

One proof that this concept existed among the immigrant population is found in the inaccuracy of census figures for the size of the Czech - Moravian population in texas.

The various concepts of national identity held by 19th century Slavic immigrants, many of whom from eastern Slavic lands could only define their national identity as "Slavic" or perhaps "Orthodox," certainly created difficulties for American immigration officials.(10) The national designations recorded by American immigration and census officials, which often had little meaning for Slavic immigrants, do not offer, in the case of the Czech Moravians of Texas, an accurate picture of the size of this population.

The census of 1900, for example, registered the foreign origin of Austrians, Bohemians and Poles, but not Moravians. Of all these designations, only the Austrian related to political citizenship. Czech Moravians in Texas were frequently counted as Austrians or other nationals. A not insignificant discrepancy exists between the census figures for the Czech - Moravians of Texas and the actual size of this population. The Czech - American journalist Jaroslav Salaba Vojan discussed this problem and cited unofficial estimates of the number of Texas Czech - Moravians which differ remarkably from official figures.(11) What is important here is how such a discrepancy came about. Vojan explained: "The census was skewed by a deeply - rooted Moravian separatism. The Moravians gave Moravia as their native land. The census - takers did not recognize this designation and indiscriminately they recorded, the Moravians as Austrians."(12) Many 19th century Czech - Moravians in Texas, far from identifying with the more ecumenical Czecho - Slavic concept of national identity, identified themselves as Moravians and vigorously objected to being called Czech or Bohemian.

Census officials incorrectly assumed that Moravians, for official purposes, would identify themselves as Bohemians. Yet for the 19th century Moravian the designation of Bohemian did not indicate his political citizenship and, in most cases, did not indicate his cultural identity. Census officials assumed that the national and cultural distinctions of Europe, which have developed over the centuries, are less complicated than they actually are The Slavic - Moravian concept of national identity might be dismissed as an idiosyncrasy of a population which lacked a well - developed national consciousness. It is important to note here, however, because this view was common among 19th century Czech Moravian immigrants in Texas. This is not to deny the important cultural ties shared by Moravians and Bohemians, but rather to call attention to a

peculiar 19th century concept of national identity which has, largely vanished in Europe.

Some idea of the tenacity with which Czech - Moravians held to their views on national identity is illustrated in an article by the Czech - American journalist L.W. Dongres published in 1924: In schools in the old country we learned that the West Sla ys were called the Czechoslovaks and were composed of the Czechs in Bohemia, the Moravians in Moravia, and the Silesians in Silesia. But that the difference between them was only ethnographic and that all were in fact Bohemian.

That theory would serve a person very badly in Texas. I recognized that immediately in 1893 when Jan Rosicky, the editor of Hospodar and my boss, sent me to Texas to do a story on farming in the South. As I was riding in Fayette County one day, I hailed several women working in a field whom I suspected were Czech. I said in Czech, "Good morning. mother! Could you be so kind as to tell me if any Czechs live around here?"

"Good morning," came the reply.

"Only Moravians live around here, but about four miles down the road from us, on a bend in the river, live some Czechs who came down from the North." I continued, "And where is your husband, mother?" "In the field, 'SAZIJA S OGARY K013ZOLE'," Anxious to add to my technical expertise about farming, I got off my horse and followed her husband in the row trying to find out what this new plant "kobzole" was and how one plants "s ogary." Upon closer inspection I found that "kobzole" were potatoes and that the father planting them "s ogary;" " along with the boys."

Our countrymen from Moravia comprise about 80 percent of our immigrants in Texas and the majority of them came from eastern and northern Moravia on the Silesian border. They have rejected and to this day reject the term "Czech." "They refer to themselves as Moravians --.". Our people in Texas, even in the second and third generation, "ale"' (read) and "p ge" (write) Moravian.

They take MOravian newspapers, go to

Moravian churches where they have Moravian priests and Moravian sermons. In their organizations they happily sing "Kde domov muj" (Czech National Anthem, "Where Is My Home") but full of enthusiasm, strength and love for their homeland, they sing the verse. "I am Moravian, that is my pride."(13) As Dongres observed, the Czech Moravians are distinguished from other Czech - Americans by the name which they have often applied to themselves -- "Moravec ."(14) As with the concept of national identity, the name Moravec was at first associated in Texas with the native region of immigrants 13. Model Fraternal Code [MFC]-Illinois extended discussions on a draft of the MFC for Illinois have been held with the Illinois Insurance Department. It still is anticipated that the Director of Insurance will include the MFC in his package of recommendations to the 1985 Legislature. It is expected to be introduced in the near future.

A hearing was held on the MFC (HB 1830) in Indiana February 4th. Deputy Insurance Commissioner Klegg spoke in support of the bill, as did representatives of the NFCA Law Committee. There was no opposition, and the bill was reported out of committee "do pass" 9 - 0.

Subsequently, the bill passed the House 94 - 0 and now is in the Senate, where a hearing has not yet been scheduled.

The MFC has been introduced (SF 437, HF 552) in Minnesota with a strong, bipartisan group of sponsors.

Hearing dates have not yet been scheduled.

Nebraska - A hearing was held on the MFC (LB 508) February 5th.

Insurance Director Michael J. Dugan spoke in favor of the bill, as did representatives of the NFCA Law Committee. There was no opposition and the bill was placed on the legislative consent calendar for passage.

At that time, Senators Landis and Chambers indicated that they will attempt to amend the bill on the floor to include a premium tax on fraternals.

They would need 25 votes to do so. It is likely that the bill could come to the floor the week of March 4th. It is requested that society representatives contact their Senators urging opposition to the amendment. Utah - A substantial revision of the entire Insurance Code (S 232 by Finlinson) was introduced February

2nd. It has an effective date of July 1, 1986, in order to provide time for study and amendment by the 1986 Legislature. The fraternal chapter is patterned after the present Wisconsin law, and is generally acceptable.

Prescribed Burning Boosts Pastures Prescribed (planned) burning can boost pasture production by hastening spring greenup- and increasing forage quality.

Prescribed burning works well where there is excess, low quality standing forage during the dormant season, points out Dr. David Bade, forage specialist with the TAES, The Texas A&M University System. Such forage is usually not consumed by livestock and slows new growth and delays soil warmup in the spring.

In addition to stimulating early spring growth and improving forage quality, prescribed burning also has shown to suppress weeds and brush, to improve the use of coarse grasses, and to control parasites, Bade points out.

To measure some of the potential benefits of prescribed burning, Bade conducted a pasture burn demonstration in Waller County last March, working with county extension agent David McGregor and extension specialists Dr. Tommy Welch and Dr. L.R. Sprott. The demonstration was a part of the Integrated Livestock Management Program of the Extension Service.

The demonstration involved 10 acres of a native pasture of common Bermuda grass, Dallis grass and mixed bunch grasses. The pasture had adequate fuel for a good, uniform burn, notes Bade. The remainder of the pasture was used for a check.

No visual difference was observed in the percent of weeds on the burned and unburned plots. However, the burned pasture did green up 7 to 10 days earlier, and livestock congregated on the burned plot, grazing it closely during the first two months after the burn, Bade says.

Such grazing is indicative of the increased forage quality present in the burned plot and the accessibility of spring growth to the grazing animal. In April (a month after the burn) new growth- on the burned plot was taller and easier to graze.

Grass clippings six weeks after the burn showed that the protein content of grass in the burned plot was 13.2 percent, almost twice that of all forage in the unburned plot and significantly higher than new growth in the unburned plot. TDN (total digestible nutrients) as well as the percentage of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium also was considerably higher.

Even after 10 weeks, clippings from the burned plot showed that the protein content as well as the level of other nutrients 'remained significantly above those of the unburned plot.

Based on this demonstration as well as other studies, prescribed burning definitely is a useful practice for boosting spring forage growth and quality. However, additional work is needed to pinpoint the best time to burn for maximum weed control and how burning and herbicides can best be used to control weeds in pastures.

Bade adds that prescribed burning must be well planned, with adequate fire guards, fire prevention equipment, and permission from the County Air Quality Board. It must be done at the proper time of the year and under desirable weather conditions.

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the 6arka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, d, t', g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the h gek or caret is used for some hushing sounds. s—s, c—C, z—I, r—1 As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t n, h, ch, k and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the pIt BIt sound, the sound must be spelled with a y or jr, thusly: kdyby (byl) chytrjr tjrden kytice 2adnjr rytif hybny The soft consonants are d', t', ii, g, C, f, and also c and j. USE OF CAPITAL LITTERS: There is a difference in the usage of

capital letters in Czech and English.

Consequently, days of the week and month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations) titles of books, films, etc. take capitals.

Ex.: Karel Dvorak, Wilsonovo nadrali, Dunaj, Angli6an, echy, Smetanova opera, "Prodand nevesta", etc., and Nage fimsko-katolicka cirkev; Velika slovanska podporujici jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE-FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR-INFORMAL usage: Vy, Yam, Vag: Ty, Tvii, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Yam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste v6era jeli do mega.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun já is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English). Ex., Mam Cesku tienu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvirne Cesky. (We speak Czech).

Type pfedseda declines in singular like zena, with the exception of dative and locative. Plural is regular like pani.

Soudce is in other cases than N. sg. and V. sg. declined like muZ. Nouns of the type pfedseda (chairman) are mostly family names like itaa, Hruza, Jirka (from Jiff—George), Honza (from Jan—John), Pepa (from Josef-(from Franta Joseph), Franti g ek—Frank), Vlcid'a (from Vladimir; because of the soft d' it takes -i instead of -y in G. sg. and A., I. pl.; similarly all nouns ending in a soft consonant plus -a), then nouns ending in -ita, -ista (corresponding to English -ite, -ist) like komunista, specialista, klavirista (pianist), turista, husita and few other like hrdina (hero), kolega (colleague), sluha (servant). Type soudce (judge) represents mostly nouns with the suffix -ce (meaning "he who does something") like prtivodce (guide), zcistupce (representative, delegate, counsel), pfijemce (recipient, consignee), dcirce (donor), obrdnce (defender, back).

Operate Farm Tractors Safely

Most tractor accidents can be prevented: • Follow operating, maintenance, and safety instructions in your operator's manual.

• Take breaks to reduce fatigue when operating your tractor.

• Dress appropriately, including a bump cap and safety shoes.

• Train all tractor operators and don't allow extra riders.

• Keep shielding in place and make sure hydraulic lines are connected right and leak-free.

• Match ground speed to operating conditions and watch where you are going. Look for overhead powerlines. Avoid ditches and steep slopes.

• Use flashing lights and display SMV emblem on the road.
