DHR Honors Outstanding Employee

District 1 Holds Two Sales Seminars

Brother Melvin Skrabanek(left) and Erwin M. Dabbs Melvin Skrabanek of Route 3, Caldwell, Texas , has been chosen as one of three outstanding employees of Region 6 of the Texas Department of Human Resources (DHR) for the first quarter of state fiscal year 1985.

Region 6 covers the 30 county central Texas area.

Citing Brother Skrabanek's achievements as an AFDC and Food Stamp worker, Erwin M. Dabbs, regional administrator, presented a walnut plaque to Brother Skrabanek at a staff meeting in Elgin.

Brother Skrabanek has worked in the Burleson County area for the Department of Human Resources since 1951 in the area of income assistance. A former football official for twenty - five years, Brother Skrabanek now raises cattle on his farm as a hobby. He is also active in SPJST, a Czech fraternal organization, serving as convention secretary for three years, member of the Publication Committee, and director of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville.

DHR developed the employee recognition system to recognize exemplary employees. Outstanding employees for the region are chosen in three categories each quarter with selection of an "Employee of the Year" at the end of the fiscal year.

These employees are then reviewed along with others from across the state for selection of a 'statewide employee of the year' for the department.

SFM Silas Smith held dinner/seminars at Bryan and Brenham along with District I Director Ben Trcalek for the active sales representatives in District I. Of the 46 producing sales representatives in District I, twenty three were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on to bigger and better things "Don't be left behind."

It is the lodge and members duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so they can better serve your membership.

Donna Kasper of UT notified us that Ms. Barbara McCandless will present a look at the work of Jno P. Trlica, a well - known photographer of Granger, Texas. Many of our members and readers remember Brother Trlica's work in the SPJST plus , his photography work, especially those of you in the Granger - Holland - Taylor, etc. vicinity. a** Brother Victor A. Peter of Lodge Rozkvet (Prosperity) No. 172, Pasadena sent us a press release about the Czech Club of San Jacinto College sponsoring a "Czech Genealogy Workshop" at Lodge 172 Sunday, April 28th. This editor does not know what the Television viewing habits of our members and readers are, however, as a suggestion - the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) is showing a very educational (12 part) series entitled "The Living Planet" narrated and evidently directed and produced by David Attenborough of England. He had a very good position with (BBC) British Broadcasting Corporation and left it to do this documentary.

It is shown in our area on Channel 13 Monday at 7 p.m. and Thursday at

8 p.m. (the same episode twice each week). It certainly would be a very valuable history of our Earth in pictures for all, especially school - age children.

Another very educational program is shown daily on PBS entitled "Wild, Wild World of Animals" narrated very effectively by William Conrad.

It is a pity that these types of shows are not shown on our three major networks instead of some of the "mess" our children can see on them; of course, it seems that national sponsors would NOT be willing to sponsor them, financially.

Remember, our country's future depends on how we bring up and educate our generations now coming up and that goes for the future of our SPJST Society! *** Social Security earnings a recent congressional inquiry disclosed that a total of 840,000 Social Security recipients received smaller benefits than they were entitled to on 1983. The average error: $32.50 each month per recipient. The errors involved only about 3.2 percent of all Social Security recipients. But it is up to everybody contributing to Social Security to check his or her earnings record to make sure it is correct. Just fill out Form 7004, available at local Social Security offices. You will get a computer readout showing the last three years of earnings, plus the total of earnings since contributions began.

Only hard driving executives get ulcers, right? No t The Health Insurance Association of America says people in all occupations have ulcers.

Most likely to develop them: Those who have one or more relatives with ulcers, adults in their 30s and 50s, people with Group 0 blood, those who smoke cigarettes, take Aspirin regularly or drink coffee, tea or cola.

If you do develop an ulcer, don't expect more than temporary relief from drinking milk. Milk can even cause the stomach to produce more acid, making the ulcer worse. a** Some of the most serious home and apartment fires occur in February and March -- just as winter is ending in many parts of the country. Many of these fires can be traced to overworked furnaces and space heaters and to carelessness on the part of users. To limit the danger, you are offered a free packet of "Be Fire Smart" tips, including leaflets on kerosene heaters and wood stoves. It includes family escape plans for homeowners, renters and high - rise - apartment dwellers.

Single packets are free; just call (800) 221 - 4954 toll - free. asa' Do you pump your own gas? Three out of four motorists do, but many forget to check under their car's hood as often as they should. The Car Care Council says that among the most neglected items is the automatic transmission - fluid level. It should be checked at least every month or two -even, more often when the car is subjected to "severe use" as defined in the owner's manual. a** Fraternal Projects - The National Fraternal Congress Association Board of Directors adopted a motion to designate restoration of the State of Liberty as a two - year project for the Fraternal Benefit System, beginning July, 1984.

Czech Genealogy Workshop In Pasadena The Czech Club of San Jacinto College will sponsor a Czech Genealogy Workshop. This workshop will be held in the hall of the SPJST Lodge No. 172, located at 3609 Preston Road in Pasadena from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 1985.

Members from the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will make a presentation and have researched data available to help persons working on their Czech family histories. This information will include Czech immigrant passenger lists, villages of origin or places of birth of our Czech immigrant ancestors, maps showing location of their origin, and much other data relating to your ancestors from the provinces of Cechy (Bohemia) and Moravia, in present day Czechoslovakia, formerly part of Austria. Data will also be available on the Czechs in the Censuses of 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 here in Texas for those counties where the pioneer Czech families settled, as well as church records.

There will be a small registration fee of $1 to cover some expenses. This will be an excellent opportunity for those of you who have started researching your Czech ancestry to quickly learn "how to do it" and to get past road blocks you may already have encountered.

Sandwiches and drinks will be served from noon to 4 p.m.

The Czech Club At University Of Texas (Austin) The Czech Club at the University of Texas at Austin would like to invite you and all others interested in Czech to attend the Twelfth Annual Conference of Czech Students and Teachers of Texas. It will take place Saturday, March 23, 1985 at the SPJST Lodge 29 Hall in Taylor, Texas.

Registration for the conference will begin at 1 p.m. immediately followed at 2 p.m. by the program. The program will consist of guest speakers sharing ideas and experiences on various Czech - related topics. A social hour will start at 5 p.m. which will precede a barbecue dinner at 6:30 p.m.

A polka dance will follow the dinner.

We request a $1 donation at the door to help pay for kolache, coffee, decorations, etc. Tickets for dinner and/or dance can be purchased at the appropriate times.

Lodge 6 Stages March Activities Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood was held at 3 p.m. March 3rd.

Shirley Dobecka and Elaine Stuckly led the Pledge of Allegiance and Shirley led the SPJST Pledge.

Roll call was called with all officers being present. There were 16 members and one guest, Stephen Hutyra, present.

All reports were given in order.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth members were having a kite flying contest after the meeting. The youth will be taking cakes to the rest home Wednesday, March 6th. The youngsters had a good turnout for their Valentine Party. Sister Schuetz also read a letter from the new State Youth Director. Birthday celebrants for March are Kevin and Tammi Dobecka. Jim Bo Hromadka brought the Birthday Cake.

Brother George Straten gave the Board of Trustees' meeting report.

Election of trustee officers was held; those elected are Chairman George Straten, Assistant Chairman Peggy Dobecka, and Secretary/Treasurer Robert Dobecka. The trustees suggested we donate to West Fraternal's annual picnic. They also recommended that we have our annual picnic and to participate in Westfest this coming year. They set the Easter Party date which will be Sunday, March 31 with a fried chicken /dressing supper, and to ask each member to bring a covered dish or dessert to go with the meal.

Door prizes drawn were: $10 door prize was William C. Onstott (not present), $10 door prize -- Lawrence Ray Ondrej (not present), $3 progressive door prize drawn was Margaret Straten (not present), and the $2 door prize was won by Edward Hykel.

Lodge 29 Holds February Meeting The Taylor lodge held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, February 10 at 4 p.m.

Carla Potts and Tammy Machu, representing the youth club, presented the flag and led the members reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Edna Loesser, Charles Hranicky and Anna Dusek.

We, then, had roll call of officers and they all were present.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and the treasurer's report and Property Committee report were given. Sister Edith Shiller gave the audit report for the last three months.

President Adamek appointed Edith Shiller, Donna Pasemann and Dorothy Hirt to audit the books for the coming year.

We had ' a sympathy acknowledgement from the Henry Kaminski family.

Secretary Michael Kaiser announced that we will have one 50 - year member this year and that he has four SPJST History Books left to sell.

We had several new members join our lodge, namely, Adema Dee Grimes, James Allen Grimes, Timmy Schneider, Ronda Molynn Shiller, Glenn Scott Learoy, Justin Thomas Bailey, Laura Lynn Urbanek, Walton Harold Stone, Leticia Marie Stone, Lorie Lyn Gasser, Lonnie Dean Zycha, Jr., Debra Sue Stojanik, James Lee Grimes, Sherry Dee Grimes, Alvin Pfanstiel, and one social member, Rufhine Pfanstiel, Our May Fete is coming up Sunday, May 5th. Those serving on the committee will be Elaine Machu, Donna Pasemann, Geraldine Steger, Pam Butler, Kathryn Adamek and Velma Marx. Any girl 16 years of age or older and is a member of our lodge is asked to be present at our next meeting.

Youth Club Leader Melvin Steger reported 33 members were present at their meeting and three new members joined. They received a thank you letter from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II for the Kleenex that the youth club gave the residents. He also reported that next week is District II Skating Party, YAD will be held in Elgin July 18, youth camp will be in August, and District II meeting will be held at Seaton Lodge No. 47, March 17th.

Our next lodge meeting was set for March 10 at 2 p.m. before our 3 p.m.

Lodge 30 Sets March 31st Meeiing Dear Members: Our Lodge 30, Taiton meeting was held March 3, 1985 and was called to order by President Mary Mrnustik at 1:30 p.m.

We were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by our youth club members. Everyone remained standing for a tribute to our departed members.

Secretary Wanda Dorotik had roll call and all officers were present. The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given by Annimae Merta.

A thank you note was read by Georgia Dorotik from the family of our deceased member, Edwin Boehm, for the beautiful spray of flowers sent in his memory.

President Mary Mrnustik received a letter from the Supreme Lodge concerning tax exemptions for fraternal societies.

The lodge also received its copy of A History of The SPJST which we ordered and will have available for members to check out.

Our books were audited and found in order for 1984. We want to thank Karen Kaspar and Kathy Krpec for their help.

A $50 check was then given to President Mary Mrnustik to present to the youth club. We hope this will help them with their activities through the year. The youth club will be collecting hosiery for the nursing home project this month and Youth Leader Georgia Dorotik asked any member wishing to help to bring old hosiery to the meeting. The youth project for next month will be collecting for Good Will Because of Easter, our next meeting was changed to March 31, instead of the first Sunday in April, at 1:30 p.m.

Lodge 47 Monthly Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our monthly meeting held March 3, 1985 began at 2 p.m. with President Jerry Pechal presiding.

Flagbearers Tim Wilson and Daryl Kortis presented the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were• present and gave satisfactory reports.

12 sales showed Roll call representatives present and 5 absent.

We also have a new sales representative, Daniel Hejl.

Secretary Ann Koon read the minutes and the following correspondence: thank you notes from Jerry Trampota and Judy Sirny and a letter from the Supreme Lodge with tax forms. We received a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar about the new Tax Reform Bill, a request from the Easter Seal Society, and a letter from Central Telephone Company about yellow page ads, also a thank you card from the American Lung Association for our donation.

The membership voted to send $25 to the Easter Seal Society.

We welcomed the following visitors to our meeting, namely, Ann Balusek, Lillian Hejl, Gertrude Kahlig, Lonnie, ugusta and Freddie Schroeder, Helen

Boykin and Connie Mikulas. Do come, again.

We had one new member Helen Lucille Marek this month, and one transferee Helen Haisler into our lodge. There were three transferred out; they were J.C., Linda and Brenda Johnson. Mrs. Marek was in attendance at this meeting. We hope to see you, again.

Reported on the sick list were Adeline Kohutek and Judy Sirny. Both ladies were at the meeting. We were so glad to see you are both doing fine.

The District II spring meeting will be held at Lodge 47 March 17 at 2 p.m.

The youth will hold a bake sale during the break period. A supper will be served after the meeting. The ladies of District II are asked to bring a salad or sweets. Everyone come out and enjoy the meeting.

Birthdays for March are Woodrow Marek, Adeline Kohutek, Rosa Craft and Lenora Mucha. Happy Birthday, everyone!

Lodge 51, Ellinger To Hold Meeting Dear Members: "To have it or not to have it," that is the question!

The question as to whether or not we will have the bi - annual lodge picnic in 1985, came up for discussion at our December meeting, but due to the weak attendance and lack of interest the question was left unanswered.

Instead, it was decided that it will be discussed and answered in the March meeting, and here is how we will finally arrive with the answer: Lodge 51 will hold its regular quarterly meeting Sunday, March 17, at the Ellinger Fire Department Building. The president will call the meeting to order at 10 o' clock in the morning and, immediately, we will bring up the matter of the picnic. Of course, we had other suggestions that would substitute the picnic, but we will need your opinion and your suggestions, also. So it is very, very important that you attend this meeting. The picnic matter will be decided one way or another regardless whether or not you will attend. Which way? Sorry, I don't know!

Lodge 66 February Meeting Our monthly meeting was held February 17 with our president calling the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. The flags were presented by Chris Owen and Larry Yates with Janice Stanislav leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and lodge motto.

At this time the visitors at our meeting were acknowledged. They were our State Youth Director Sister Sue Meadows, Brother Rudolf Zalm an and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Ray. We enjoyed having you with us and we hope all of you will come back soon.

All officers were present except for Sister Darlene Engelke.

Our secretary, Bonnie Pruitt, read the minutes of our previous meeting.

After a few minor corrections they were approved.

Correspondence was read from our District III DYC Sister Bessie Petr. She was writing us to see if Linden Hall would sponsor the YAD this year.

After some discussion, the lodge members decided to hold Youth Activity Day on June 30 at our lodge.

Brother George Shilling gave the report on the Board's meeting held February 6th. It was very interesting.

At this time our youth leader, Sister Kay Owen, gave her report. There were 14 youth present and one guest, State YD Sue Meadows. The youth had made Valentine boxes to be given away during the adult meeting. She also mentioned that the youth had made plans to attend another movie.

They didn't get to do this as planned in January due to bad weather. The youth are to wear green to their next meeting since it is St. Patrick's Day. Sister Libbie Parma came forward and she was presented with a check towards the scholarship fund.

Once again there were no funds available from the Bingo fund to give.

Sister Smith also thanked the ladies who worked with her on the Welfare Committee this past year. Her new co workers are Annie Hanus, Leona Nors and Sue Pauling. Sister Smith also made the suggestion that the name "Welfare" be changed to "Fraternal Committee." The lodge voted for this change.

Sister Leona Nors sent sympathy cards to the following: Mr. and Mrs. Alfonse Urbanovsky, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kofnovec, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kolenovsky, Mr. and Mrs. Henry West and Mr. Charlie Mueller. Get well cards were sent to Adele Janak, Anna Towery, Philomena Miller, Jay Jones, Willie Adamcik and Bernie Gebala.

Sister Shilling gave her report of the Entertainment Committee. She asked the lodge members to vote in favor of letting them purchase some kitchen utensils with some money that was donated to the lodge. A motion was made and a second given. The motion was carried. At our March meeting we will have a new band audition for us called "Moonlighters". They would like to get some bookings at our lodge.

The ladies of the lodge are asked to bring a covered dish to the next meeting.

The lodge had only one new member to be accepted in the lodge, she was Jeannie Swank.

Under unfinished business, Brother Otto Hanus came forward to thank everyone for the cards sent to him while in the hospital.

Brother Emil Hanus brought up discussion on Direct Billing and whether or not the lodge would vote on this. Brother Silas Smith was called to

answer anyone's questions concerning the matter. There was much discussion on the topic. Sister Pauling made a motion that the lodge keeps its financial secretary and does not go to Direct Billing. A second was given and the lodge then voted to keep our financial secretary.

Brother Silas Smith asked those sales representatives present if they had received a copy of some information pertaining to the sale of insurance. If not, he would give them a copy.

At this time President Orsag asked our guest State Youth Director Sue Meadows to say a few words. She thanked everyone for having the Youth Activity Day at our lodge. Mrs. Meadows also asked the parents of our youth to get in touch with her if they had any questions concerning the youth to contact her. She then said she would cut her speech short because she was anxious to taste the chili that everyone smelled cooking in the kitchen.

Our door prize winner was Brother Frank Parma.

Sister Owen then came forward for the Valentine box drawing. Winners were: Sisters Georgia Kofnovec, Dorothy Shilling, Emma McDugal, Bertha Newman, Louise Matus, Irene Schmienz and Barbara Stanislav; Brothers Larry Pankonien, Rudy Janek, Bill Warren, Bennie Engelke, Benito Leos and Frank Kofnovec were also winners.

Our birthday people for the month of February were: Sisters Rose Parma, Lillian Parma, Lil Cox and Mary Barak and Brothers Bennie Engelke, Joe Pruitt, Ray Orsag, Walter Grams and little Steven Warren. In my last report I neglected to put Sister Libbie Parma's name in my birthday list.

Houston Lodge 88 News

The Drumette Unit of the Amani Court No. 72 of the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine hosted their annual benefit dance in the Chandelier Ballroom Friday, February 22nd. The Drumettes, under the direction of Kathy Trefell, have, as their project, visits and gifts to the Shrine Burn Center in Galveston and The Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital in Houston. These ladies have appeared in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and various cities in Texas with their drum' exhibition. Sister Kathy states that the members of this unit view it as both a gift to others and fun for themselves.

Besides Kathy Trefell, other Lodge 88 members are Gladys Pulley, Marie Spaulding, Alma McNaspy, Hope Trefell, Fran George, Connie Jones, Dean Cheek and Edna Swanberg.

Some of our members were not content with the little bit of snow we had this winter; they went looking for more! Robert and Ruth Martinak, their children Ricky Martinak and Rhonda and Bob Cindrat with their little daughter, Tiffany, visited the ski resort of Vail, Colorado the last week of February. No broken bones or other injuries were incurred so a good time was had of this little family outing.

On a sad note, Elsie Zalesky lost her father February 22nd. Louis Fick, age 93, passed away in Houston in a local hospital. He is survived by Elsie, Otila Franke, Chester Fick, Louis Fick, Jr., Leroy Fick and Roland Fick, Fraternally, grandchildren and several great Dorothy Warren grandchildren. He was buried in Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Our -SPJSTsympathy to the family of A.J. and Elsie and to the other family members.

We are sorry to hear that Stella Cykala and Mary Vacek are hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond and wish them a speedy recovery.

We regret the loss of Lydia Horak and Marie Reed. Lydia and Marie will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Mrs. Margie Hall has been out for the past few months due to illness.

Contributing to her absenteeism is her husband's serious illness.

Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: Friday night, March 1st, the first SPJST Lodge 84 team "Czech Home Plate Review" was presented to the public and is now history. I am happy to report that the show was a total success as I have been told by many present, and the attendance was gratifying.

It was fun presenting the show by all of the cast, to name them all would take a whole page and I would probably omit some person, but I would like to thank everyone who was in the cast, a heartfelt thanks from the whole team and special thanks to General Chairman Jerry Manak, to Don Lennox (the writer of a lot of the material) and also Paul Bartos, the very capable master of ceremonies, who had very much to do with the show's production; also thanks to Don Jarma who was in charge of the country/western band featuring Blue Grass type of music and to all of the members in the band who performed to the satisfaction of the audience present. They really surprised everyone with their talents, and many compliments were expressed. It truly was a good show overall and we deeply appreciate all the fine people who attended the show and gave their support.

Our thanks also to those who offered special donations to the fund; it will help our uniform fund greatly.

Many exball players came to the show and our thanks for your presence. Our thanks also go to Ben David, who came from Austin, Texas to attend our show. Ben and I together started the team 32 years ago as co managers and we both agreed we were glad that we had a hand in starting the team at the Lodge 84. We hope the team continues for many more seasons and with support from our membership, the SPJST membership and all of the friends and supporters of the team, we know it will. Our thanks to our mother lodge for letting us put on the benefit show.

Our season will probably begin the second week in April and we will be playing at Samuel Grand Diamond, again, this year. The team will start working out as soon as the weather warms up.

We will be calling upon all of you once more this season at the annual Team Benefit Dance that will be held at Lodge 84 Saturday night, April 20th. The very popular "Czech Harvesters Orchestra" will be playing your favorite polkas, waltzes and western tunes at this dance, again. In order to meet our expenses for playing this season, raising funds to play is very essential for our survival. We hope we will have your support, again.

SVPS Chapter #9, Ft.Worth To Meet Dear Members: At the last meeting, election of officers was held and the following were elected. President -- Carl Zich, Vice President -- Frank Tesar, Treasurer -- Joe Gregory, Secretary -Roy Alhohn, and Appraisers -- W.H. McMillen, R.L. Alholm, Donald Steinman, John Murphy, Jr., Joe Tirk, Carl Zich and Roy Alholm; Auditors -- Alphonse Tesar, Donald Steinman and W.H. McMillen.

The next meeting will be held March 17 at the Hermann Sons Hall, 1200 W. Fuller Avenue. It will begin at 2 p.m.

The officers will give their reports and any items pertaining to the insurance will be discussed.

The ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the meal which is provided by the local chapter.

Lydia and Roy Alholm have gone on an extended trip of Southern Europe.

I'm sure they will have an enjoyable trip and will probably be back just in time for the meeting.

We express our sincere sympathy to the family of Eugene Holacka who passed away February 28th. He had a lot of friends who will miss him; he was a pleasant person to be around.

As so many people did, Shirley and I had the flu which we are about over. I heard that several of our friends also had it and I hope they are now feeling better, too.

Choral Group Report

It was brought to my attention that no one reported on our Christmas Party to the Vestnik, which was held at Seaton Star Hall No. 47, December 16th.

The Scrapbook Committee, Georgia Sodek and Martha Klusacek, said a place was left for it, and, so we wouldn't leave an empty spot s I am sending in the report.

Present were Floyd and Emily Stuteville, Bill and Lillian Kosarek, Ruby Bolton, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Martha Klusacek, Annie Jakubec, LaVerne Vanicek, Mary and Bob Vasicek, Georgia Sodek, Albina Mikeska, Mary Holick, Della Psencik.

Helen and Henry Janacek, Agnes Schiller, Fred Lazek, Ladis and Emil; Dohnalik and Ann Krcha.

We had a fabulous dinner consisting of meats, salads, goodies that everyone had to carry back home; just too much!

There were games played and a gift exchange that followed.

We were glad to see Bill and Lillian Kosarek from Canyon Lake.

Henry and Helen Janacek, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal furnished the drinks, napkins, plates, cups and forks for the meal. Martha and Alfred Klusacek furnished the coffee.

The Macedonians were the first Christians to paint or dye eggs which the children sold in the market place.

consuming. For example, a sharp needle or tiny knife is used to create the design. The most popular method being to dip the hand blown shell into cool wax, cut out the design, paint it, rewax, and go on to the rest of the overall picture, scene or geometric design.

Another method, used particularity in parts of Bohemia and Slovakia is called bunging, where on the white shell of the egg, you put an ornament, particularity leaves, dried flowers, or grain heads with bees wax, paint the egg, remove the wax and the ornamental design is removed, leaving the desired design on the whiteness of the egg shell.

In Czechoslovakia, the young men would weave switches from willow branches and then go to the homes of young girls and ask for a gift of beautifully decorated Easter eggs. If they did not receive one, the young lady would earn a switching. This was all in fun.

From The District Youth Counselors District II Meeting This Sunday The spring meeting of District II will be held this Sunday, March 17 with Lodge 47 Seaton as host lodge.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m.; on the agenda are officers' reports, District II director's report, home office report, sales awards, recognition of 50 - year members, election of officers, and many other items of interest.

A short youth program is planned, also a bake sale is planned by several youth clubs. At the conclusion of the meeting, a free meal will be sponsored by host Lodge 47 and District II. All families are asked to bring a salad or a sweet for this meal.

All members in District II are invited to attend; members of other SPJST districts are welcome.

We will be looking forward to seeing you at this meeting.

From The Youth Leaders Youth Club Activities For Lodge 6, Cottonwood Dear Readers: We had a fair attendance at the youth club meeting held March 3 at 2:30 p.m.

February 13, the club members brought cakes to the West Rest Haven Birthday Party, also gave each person a Valentine card.

A Valentine Party was held for the youth club; they also served hot dogs, chips, dips, cake, cookies and drinks, plus exchanged Valentines, and chose a Valentine Queen and King; queen is Kayla Hromadka and Keith Hykel is king. I want to thank those who gave me Valentines, candy and gifts.

The youth members are working on Easter rabbits from one - half gallon or one gallon, also they will be making gifts for the rest home residents.

March 31, our Easter Party will begin with the youth club meeting at 2 p.m., lodge meeting at 3 p.m., an Easter program will be held after the meeting, then Easter egg hunt will take place and supper will be served. All our members are asked to bring a salad or pastry. Everyone is also asked to bring your family.

Next month a Bowling Party is planned by the youth.

Birthday celebrants for March are Kevin Dobecka and Tammi Dobecka.

Jimbo Hromadka brought a cookie Birthday cake. Thank you, Jimbo!

Remember, youth members try to attend the practice for the Easter program on Friday nights.

Lodge 39 Youth Club Plans Future Activities Dear Readers: Spring is almost here and summer is quickly approaching, which means busy, busy, busy, for our youth club.

The most important thing though is that there is so much fun associated with all the work.

Our ch.]) held a Skating Party at Pooh's Park followed by a hot dog supper February 24, 1985. We had this' 'en members in attendance. It seemed as though everyone present had a blast.

Our regular meeting was held this past Sunday-, March 10th at 2:30 p.m.

Youth discussed our fund - raising project which will be selling candy bars, camp and also YAD group talents and projects. For our March project, all youth brought bags of Easter candy to donate to the children at the Children's Shelter that they might have a big Easter egg hunt. For those of you who don't know - the Children's Shelter located in Bryan, Texas is a home for battered and abused children who don't have a place to stay. The shelter provides temporary shelter until they may be placed in Foster Care. It gives us a good feeling to help them out! For our March donation the youth will be donating to the Statue of Liberty Repair and Renovation Fund to help restore the Statue of Liberty back to its natural beauty.

Friday, March 29th, from 7 to 9 p.m., the youth will have an Easter Party at the Lodge Home to include games and activities of all kinds and refreshments for all. Remember youth -- bring your friends!

Our District I meeting will be held at the New Tabor lodge April 28th. The youth will present a short skit entitled `Seasons." We look forward to seeing the programs presented by our sister lodges youth clubs.

My assistant Linda Faust, and I attended the District I Youth Leader's Training Class at Susan Skrabanek's house in New Tabor March 2nd.

Thanks to Susan for hosting the event and also to Sue Meadows for all her input at the class and for her generous help in the literature she has been mailing - Indeed the youth clubs throughout the state can be thankful for your hearty leadership - we look forward to working with you!

Lodge 30 Youth Club Announces Winners Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m.

March 3rd, at the Taiton Community Center. Our meeting was brought to order by President Michelle Srubar, the pledge was led by Kristi Korenek, and Jennifer Dluhos recited a prayer.

For the contest, the youth in ages 6 9 were asked to make a Shamrock; in ages 10 - 12 they were requested to draw a leprechan; and those in 13 - 17 were asked to make a St. Patrick's Day scene. Winners of the contest were (6 - 9): 1st Lenice Kaspar, 2nd -Craig Dorotik, and 3rd -- Michael Kaspar (10 - 12): 1st -- Marcy Dorotik (13 - 17): 1st -- Jean Dorotik and 2nd -- Michelle Srubar We honored our assistant youth leader with a gift and cake during the meeting.

We played a game of musical Shamrocks after the meeting.

We then had refreshments which consisted of rice crispies, cakes, chips and punch.

Bryan Lodge 39 Youth Club News Dear Readers, Lodge 39 had a Skating Party at Pooh's Park Sunday, February 24th.

Thirteen people attended and were supervised by five adults. Everyone had a wonderful time skating and then we enjoyed hot dogs, chips and Cokes.

Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club News Dear Members, We did not have a January youth meeting, so we met February 10th, but we did enjoy the snow! We also enjoyed making Valentine Day corsages.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer said camp dates are set for June 5, 6, 7 and 8, at Lone Star Camp in La Grange.

We have a new member Cy Weldon Pavliska. Afterwards we enjoyed skating.

Next meeting was set for March 10, with the youth club meeting at 4 p.m.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned members of Lodge J.R. Kubena No. 164, Rio Hondo, Texas, wish to express our deepest sympathy, on behalf of our officers and the entire membership, to the bereaved family of

Sealy, Texas. In 1941 he moved with his family to Harlingen, Texas and was active in farming until his retirement.

A veteran of World War I, he served in the Navy for three years and was an active member of the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Matilda Krupala of Harlingen; two sons, Louis Krupala of Harlingen, Charles Krupala of Lyford, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Aloisie Zdansky of Raymondville; 13 grandchildren; 8 great - grandchildren; one half brother, Emil Krupala; two half sisters, Tonie Krupala and Mrs. Frances Maier, all of Sealy; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were conducted by Mr. Ed Doran, in Kriedler - Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel, at 10:30 a.m. January 22, followed by graveside service in Mont Meta Memorial Park, in San Benito, under the auspices of the American Legion Post No. 205 and VFW No. 2410 of Harlingen.

Pallbearers were Emil Kristof, N.J. Boudreaux, Stanley Konarik, and grandsons, Charlie Krupala, Gary Krupala and John Zdansky, Jr. May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live with us forever.

Expression Of Sympathy In behalf of the membership of Lodge Nove Kvety 35, Elk, we wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed brother EDMOND URBANOVSKY, who passed away January 25, 1985, at a Temple nursing home at age 79.

Services were held Saturday, January 26th at the Seaton Cemetery, Seaton, Texas with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating.

Brother Urbanovsky was born in West on September 13, 1905. He was a longtime resident of Waco before moving to Temple in 1983.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Jean Cousal of Temple; two brothers, Al Urbanovsky of Waco and Gus Urbanovsky of Houston; two sisters, Ellen Cook of Kingsland and Millie Ondre of Elm Mott; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Brother Urbanovsky was accepted as a member of our lodge October 4, 1947.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

JOHN P. KRUPALA age 91 years, who passed away January 19, 1985, in Harlingen, Texas.

Brother Krupala, was born in Liptal, Czechoslovakia December 15, 1893, and came to the United States in 1900 with his father. They first settled in Fayetteville and later moved to

Wednesday, March 13, 1985—VESTNIK/11 Brother Sembera was born February 20, 1915, in Dilworth, Texas. He was a grocer, in business since 1935, and owner and operator of Sembera Grocery in La Salle.

He graduated from Edna High School in 1935 and was a past member of the Edna Rotary Club. He was Justice of the Peace from 1970 to 1982 in Precinct 3, Jackson County. He was a member of the Industrial Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years and postmaster in La Salle from 1946-47.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m.

February 3 at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

February 4 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in La Salle with the Rev. Michael Malloy officiating. Burial was in La Salle Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike London, Donald Day, Bill Dyson, Kenneth Armbrister, Kirby Edwards and Craig Dyson.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Industrial Volunteer Fire Department and Cotton Kolar, Curtiss Wofford, John Bergman, David Maraggia, Joe Kusak , George Venglar, Eugene Hajek and Dan Kolodiejczyk.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Sembera of La Salle; five daughters, Charlotte London of Austin, Martha Day of Houston, Pat Dyson of Inez, Susan Armbrister of Victoria and Sally Sembera of Friendswood; four brothers, Leo Sembera of Rosenberg, Jerry Sembera of La Salle, Frank Sembera of Louisiana and Ben Sembera of Edna; two sisters, Tillie Sralla and Janie Dusek, both of La Salle; and ten grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made in Mr. Sembera's name to St. Theresa's Catholic Church in La Salle. May our departed brother rest in peace.

Honored On 70th Anniversary

We, the members of Lodge No. 97, Placed°, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister BOZENKA [BESSIE] MIKESKA, who passed away February 20, 1985, in Eola, Texas at the age of 94.

Sister MikeSka was born July 19, 1890,in Nelsonville, Texas. She lived in Placedo for many years before moving to Eola, Texas.

Sister Mikeska was a member of the SPJST for 67 years.

Sister Mikeska was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Mikeska, in March 1967; her parents, Miles and Frances Jirasek Esterak, one daughter and one son.

Survivors include one son, B.J. Mikeska of Eola; three grandchildren, seven great - grandchildren, and one great - great - grandchild.

Funeral services were held February 23rd from the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Halledey officiating. Burial was in the Shillerville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brent John Mikeska, Bill Jackson Mikeska, Thomas Chapman, Brett John Mikeska, Bradley Mikeska and Brandon Mikeska. was pallbearer Honorary Christopher Mathis.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

John W. and Frances Ondrasek, Sr. were honored on their 70th wedding anniversary with a reception given by their children, Johnnie and Joyce Ondrasek, Jr., Jane Von Gonten, and their daughter - in - law, Mrs. Jerry [Willie Mae] Ondrasek, at Burmont Nursing Home in Temple, Texas. John and the former Frances Polasek, were married February 17, 1915 in Caldwell, Texas.

They are retired farmers. They have been living at Burmont Nursing Home in Temple for 21/2 years. The Ondraseks are members of Lodge 47 in Seaton, Texas.

The Ondraseks have 6 grandchildren, 10 great - grandchildren, and 2 great - great - grandchildren. The reception was attended by many relatives and friends.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of the entire membership of Lodge Nove Kvety No. 35 in Elk, express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother TRUMON E. ANDERSON, age 78, of Mart, who died Friday, February 22, 1985, at his home.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Monday, February 25, at Littlepage Funeral Home Chapel in Mart with the Rev. W. H. Smith officiating. Burial was at Rosemound Cemetery in Waco.

Brother Anderson was born April 1, 1906, in McGregor. He was married to.

Nelda Holub January 3, 1948, in Moody. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nelda Anderson; a son, Lonnie Anderson of Houston; three brothers, Leonard Anderson and Garland Anderson, both of McGregor and Travis Anderson of Port Arthur; and three sisters, Vera Brinkley, Nadine Lee and Lorraine Welch, all of Temple.

The students are selected for inclusion in the listing by their academic achievements, service to the community, and leadership in extracurricular activities. Frances is the daughter of Mrs. Frances McDonald in Corpus Christi.

DruhY mesic tohoto roku bli!i se ke svemu konci. Co do poetu dni je to nejkratgi mesic v roce. Prakticky to vgak neznamend pfffis mnoho, mame-li na mysli praci, kterou musime vykonat.

KaklY tYden ma 7 dni, z nich 6 je pracovnich a sedmY, nedele, den odpoeinku. Ne pro vgechny, mnozi musi pracovat i v nedeli, zato maji volno jinY den. Poctive vykonavani place at' jii jakekoliv, telesne ei dugevni, je jiste jednim ze zakladnich kamenu spokojeneho tivota kaideho jednotlivce. Je jiste rozdil v tom, jakou praci koname a hlavne, koname-li ji radi, nepovatujeme-li praci za nutne zlo. Oblibime-li si svou praci, pak s chuti se do ni pustime a ani nepozorujeme jak hodiny ubihaji, z vykonaneho dila mame radost. Obyeejne katclY vgedni den je stejnY, podoba se jeden druhemu, bez zvlagtni udalosti a vzrugeni. I kdyt nedele neptinese obyeejne nic zvlagtniho, katclY se na ni WI a to je co pottebujeme ke sve tivotni spokojenosti.

V nedeli se konaji spolkove schilze, zajezdy, vYlety a rfizne vefejne zabavy.

Nag fad vyhradil si pro konani schuzi tfeti nedeli v kaldem mesici s ureitYmi vYjimkami kdyt toho je tfeba. Tak tomu bude letos v mesici eervnu a v pfig tim mesici bfeznu. 0 tom podrobneji jak bylo ujednano ye schfizi nageho fadu, konane v nedeli, 17. dnora, kterou zahajil predseda fadu, bratr Anthony Trilieek, pfivitanim pfitomnYch a vzpominkou zesnulYch elenu nageho fadu.

Vgichni tifednici byli pfitomni. Tajemnik fadu, bratr Dominic F. Netek, pfeeetl svoji obsainou zpravu, ktera byla pfijata beze zmeny. Rovnet tak zprava fin. tajemnice, sestry Kathy Uribeove, byla pfijata jak byla etena.

Navgavou byla pfitomna Rachelle Dlugoshova. Sestry zabavniho vYboru, Mary Poppova a Grace Rohanova, tentokrate pfitomny nebyly, byly omluveny. Za ne vzorne vge obstarala sestra Evelyn Matulova, ktera oznamila, ze vge je bohate pfipraveno pro obeerstveni. Sestra Alm* Trilielcova pfedsedkyne zabavniho vyboru, ye sve zprave podrobne uvedla finaneni stay vYboru a pfala vgem pfijemne pobaveni.

Pfedseda fadu, bratr Anthony Trilieek, pfedstavil novel° organisitora fadu, bratra Hijka, kterY velmi vhodne promluvil o pojigtovani, nabidl svoje slulby a dodal, to do pfigti schfize pfinese podrobnosti. Byla zajimava debata, ktere se ztleastnili bratfi Emil E. Matula, Dominic F. Netek, Alvin Schimeek a sestra Viola Mazatova.

Pfedseda fadu, bratr Anthony zavolal sestru Anna B. Rileyovou a odevzdal ji odznak padesatileteho elenstvi SPJST. Sestra Rileyova podekovala, bratr Netek pofidil opet snimek a osobne blahopfal.

Nakonec mam smutnou zpravu.

Sestra Dorothy Valkova, po dlouhe tetke nemoci v titerY, 19.tinora t.r., skonala. Pohfebni obfady konaly se v patek, 22.6nora 1985 v San Antoniu. 1 kdyi jsme yeah, to jeji zdravotni stay byl velmi vain*, jeji nahlY odchod nas pfekvapil a hiuboce zarmoutil.

Truchlicf rodine vyslovujeme svoji upfimnou soustrast.

Mluvnice— Grammar I. The verb "miti" is used in Czech to form idioms. It was conjugated in the first lesson. To say one is hungry, the proper form of the verb "nfiti" plus "Mad" is used. To say one is thirsty, use "miti"plus "Ezen".
