Seventy-two years a member of SPJST and 88 years young is Sister Rose Girard who joined SPJST in Lodge Dubovy Haj (Oak Groves) No. 126 at Ross which merged with Lodge Jaromir (Spring of Peace) No. 54 in West a few years ago.

Sister Girard is known as "Granny" to most of her family members composed of six children, twenty-one grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren, plus four great - great grandchildren; many of them gave her a birthday party at Lodge Moraysti Bratri (Moravian Brethren) No. 6 at Cottonwood, Saturday afternoon, February 9, and asked this writer to be present to take pictures.

The large family tree indeed resulted in a happy occasion and many members of her family are SPJST. members. For instance, one of her granddaughters, Rosemary Banik, her husband, Albert Banik (SPJST PC member) and their five children, all who earned the honor of being selected District III king and queen, plus two in the same family earning the distinction of State King and Queen, are very active members at Lodge Nove Kvety (New Blossoms) No. 35, Elk. The SPJST Society values their friendship and Sister Girard's many acquaintances extend many years of good health. *** If you are 20 percent above desirable weight, you have an "established health hazard" and should seek medical treatment, according to an expert panel's report to the National Institutes of Health. Health problems linked to obesity include diabetes, high blood pressure, several types of cancer, arthritis and diseases of the heart and gall bladder. The panel relied upon the table of desirable weights issued in 1983 by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and based on levels at which death rates are lowest among people between ages 25 and 59. *** The fourth leading cause of death in adults, Alzheimer's Disease, is a progressive neurological disorder that most often strikes those over age 65.

Symptoms include gradual memory loss, declining ability to perform routine tasks, impairment of judgment, confusion and disorientation. Both its cause and cure are unknown; however, the disease can be treated. To provide aid for victims and the families, the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association has established toll-free telephone numbers (800) 621-0379 nationwide and (800) 572-6037 in Illinois. *** Confused about IRA's (individual retirement accounts)? Better yet, See back page of this issue; Check with SPJST First! *** For home gardeners now planning their spring projects, the American Association of Nurserymen offers this tip: Keep in mind the size of your plantings at maturity . A small sapling may grow to a height of 75 feet and a spread of 25 feet on each side of the trunk. Such a tree should be planted at least 30 feet from the nearest structure.

Also, beware of planting shrubs that will grow too tall against your house walls -- unless you enjoy freqttent and heavy pruning. *** When shopping for a new car, it may pay you to ask about the strength of the bumper, advises the Insurance Information Institute. Some cars have bumpers designed to withstand crashes up to five miles per hour with little or no damage. Others have bumpers that can take crashes at no more than 2.5 mph without damage. When cars with 2.5-mph bumpers were tested in five mph crashes, they sustained damages costing between $149 and $487 to repair. *** Millions of Americans -- lured by the soaring value of the dollar overseas -- will travel to Europe in 1985.

Whether traveling on business or vacation, all can take steps to make their trips easier. Correspondents based in Europe offer these suggestions: Make your reservations well in advance. Some hotels in London, for example, are already booked through the end of August. One way to get rooms of reliable -- if expensive -quality is to stick to major American and European chains. Many of these chains maintain toll-free reservation phone numbers in the U.S. Pack as little as possible to keep your luggage manageable. Simplify laundry needs -- try wrinkle-free and drip-dry clothing. A couple will find a coat and tie and a dressy dress useful even for vacationing. Remember: Electrical appliances such as irons or hair dryers will require adapters in Europe unless they are battery powered.

For best restaurants, too, book as far in advance as possible -- days, even weeks. In many cases, your hotel concierge will be able to help. Watch for daily specials on menus; they are usually fresh, local and reflect the chef's personal interest.

American credit cards are accepted in Europe, but not as widely as here.

It's best to check before running up a bill. Tipping customs vary from country to country, but 15 to 20 percent is average. The tip is often included in the bill. If you're not sure, ask. You get the best exchange rates for your money, by the way, at banks and exchange bureaus, rather than at hotels, shops or in the streets.

If you don't speak the language, ask for an English-speaking taxi driver or waiter. Large restaurants often can provide menus in English. Major department stores may have shopping guides in English.

Try to drink bottled, not tap water.

Pack basic medicines such as aspirin and antidiarrhea pills. If you take prescription drugs, have a copy of the prescription with you in case you need a refill.

From The Vice President's Office SPJST and Direct Bill Since our last convention a topic that has created a good deal of discussion has been the pluses and minutes of direct billing versus group billing through the local lodge financial secretary.

To put this question in the proper prospective, it should be pointed out that this is not a political question but a business decision that must be made by our membership. As the membership is aware, the Supreme Lodge has the responsibility to maintain the viability and solvency of the Society. It is important that we make recommendations based on business principles, not necessarily what is politically feasible.

No member of the Supreme Lodge wants or advocates the elimination of the local lodge financial secretary. The financial secretary in most lodges does an outstanding job. What the Supreme Lodge is saying is that if we want to grow, this change is necessary. The SPJST is the 27th largest fraternal benefit society in the USA. All twenty six fraternals larger than us are on direct bill. This in itself should indicate what the best method of billing is.

The Supreme Lodge procured the services of an independent consulting firm, "The Ballew Company, Indianapolis, Indiana - Jim Ballew, President", to study the question of direct bill. The following is excerpts of the findings of this firm so that you may better understand what is at stake for our Society.

WHY DIRECT BILLING? "With the exception of annuity premiums, financial secretaries still collect the dues and premiums from SPJST members. This is the traditional system used by fraternal benefit societies and it worked well when everybody attended lodge meetings regularly, premiums were small and financial secretaries were

available to get the job done. Let's look at each of those points, in more detail.

Lodge attendance --- Although SPJST lodges are required to hold monthly meetings (in some cases, quarterly) many members do not attend. This means that the financial secretary no longer sees all members at the meeting hall on a regular basis.

He/She probably collects from some at lodge meetings, collects from others at church, visits some members in their homes to collect and makes arrangements for the majority to mail their assessments (dues, premiums) to him/her.

It is obvious that the system of having financial secretaries collect "assessments" from the members cannot be efficient unless all members attend lodge meetings on a regular basis.

Size of premiums --- Another problem is the size of premiums. It is one thing to collect 50 cents or $1.00 a month from each member; it is something else to collect a $1,000 annual premium. What this boils down to is that societies are virtually unable to sell large amounts and take care of all of the personal life insurance needs of their members • if they continue to use the system of having financial secretaries collect the assessments.

Shortage of financial secretaries--Typically, the income of a lodge financial secretary is high enough to keep the old - timers entrenched in the job---but too low to interest a younger person to take the job when the old timer retires. This can cause a real problem in some lodges when it comes to collecting the assessments ; after a vacancy occurs in this position.

When a fraternal benefit society modernizes its insurance operations, one of the changes it makes is to switch to direct billing. Most progressive fraternals today have switched and the remainder of those that wish to make progress are making serious efforts to get this change approved.

There is always---and understandably---opposition to this measure by financial secretaries.

Paramount among the secretaries' concern is the fact that they will no longer be reimbursed by the Society for collecting dues. However, other

fraternals have found ways to switch to direct billing without alienating their lodge financial secretaries.

Meanwhile,we recommend that you take whatever steps are possible to get the SPJST membership thinking about direct billing---and how important it is to the future of SPJST to go on direct billing as soon as possible."

I am sure that you all are aware thai to go to direct bill will mean an additional workload at the home office. We are willing to accept that challenge because we feel it is necessary for us to grow.

Today, our membership deserves the most efficient service possible. We feel direct bill allows us to process certificate loans, death claims and any other certificate service much faster. In some cases,days faster.

The member's insurance business will be handled more professionally and confidentially by direct billing because it would be handled by full time home office personnel and it will not necessitate servicing at the local lodge level.

The idea that lodge billing causes more people to attend the meeting is myth. We have investigated that aspect and have found that very few members pay their dues and/or premiums at the lodge meeting.

With interest - sensitive products becoming more common in the insurance industry, it is impossible to predict how long there will be funds available for refunds to lodges.

For a lodge to vote against "direct bill" because they feel the local financial secretary can "carry" a member in deliquen t status is certainly not a decision in the best interest of the SPJST. I'm certain no one expects someone else to pay their electric bill; why then should members of a lodge be expected to pay someone else's insurance premium. It certainly isn't fair to the other members or the financial secretary of a lodge to be expected to pay a delinquent member's premium. The only person that gains is the person who has not paid their obligation to the Society. This question has nothing to do with fraternalism; it's either you have or have not paid your premium.

I would hope that all members join together and do what is right to keep our Society viable and competitive in the 1980s. The ultimate decision is with the membership and it certainly is hoped that what is in the best interest of the SPJST is what will prevail.

Before any lodge discusses direct bill at their meeting, I would hope they would have all the facts before them.

All members of the Supreme Lodge have unanimously endorsed direct bill.

They are aware of what is necessary for us to be competitive in future years. The decision is now yours.

Of Texas Report This report has been prepared to inform you of the latest CE SAT activities. An Executive meeting was held January 19, 1985, in La Grange, Texas and the minutes of the meeting are contained below. Please remember that the minutes are unofficial until approved at the next Executive Committee meeting. The next Executive Committee meeting will be held March 23, 1985, at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall in Taylor. The

The twenty - four CESAT members who took the time to express their opinions on the poll provided in the December "Newsletter" should be commended. The expression of support for the programs was unanimous. Your continued support is needed to sustain the officers of CESAT in their efforts to implement these programs.

AN ASSESSMENT OF THE STUDY OF LANGUAGE -The author of the article printed below responded to the last newsletter by expressing his opinions with regard to the teaching of the Czech language in our schools in Texas. He was asked to expand his thoughts for inclusion in the next newsletter. Professor Souchek needs no introduction to those of us in the Houston area who have witnessed his fervent promotion of the teaching of the Czech language to interested adults and college students. Professor Souchek graciously obliged us by forwarding the following comments: More than 1,700 teachers are needed in Texas to fill vacancies created in public schools by requirements of the State Board of Education! This statement quotes newspaper articles.

Surely, similar conditions exist in other states which also find themselves in a dilemma for lack of funding and a rude awakening to the fact that we have been merrily gliding along and carelessly letting others handle one of our first priorities (that of educating our youngsters).

Have we erred in allowing the boob-tube to take over the job of baby-sitting our children so we can selfishly do what we as parents want to do? Have we hidden our children behind a video game or a computer thinking that by this exposure junior is learning the right things?

Psychologists now claim that shy junior has fortified himself against the world. He doesn't need companionship; he never develops into a member of a culture or society; he is in a world built by us for him, not socially developed, to be among the leaders of the next generation.

In our headlong race through life we somehow lost our way! Affluence, love of hoarding dollars and not "sense", expecting our teachers to do their job in addition to baby-sitting for us, forgetting the humanities' subjects in favor of technology, invariably stressing "choose a field of study so you can make money after you graduate"--these things have been our weaknesses.

The study of Czech, as that of French, German, etc., belongs to the humanities category. The primary purpose of CESAT is the promotion of Czech study so CESAT is still on track in this respect. Though world conditions have wrecked havoc in school funding, I believe the educational pendulum is now returning with an increased interest in liberal arts courses. Before the budget slashing, two years of a foreign language was a requirement for graduation from college. During the last decade foreign language study was no longer a requirement.

Consequently, many individuals have never been exposed to a second language with its history and culture.

This is disastrous! Now we realize the folly of it all. In our everyday dealing with other nations y we do not We cannot understand them. their with communicate representatives.

The long-term goal of CESAT is to have Czech taught in grade school,

high school and college. This is a goal somewhere in the distance Each school system will have great difficulty in securing qualified teachers who, in all instances, will also have to be prepared to teach other subjects. One option, therefore, is left to CESAT--to interest more college students to make up classes (to justify having Czech taught). It is from this group, those who are in the field of education and receiving a teaching certificate, where we will get our teachers of Czech for the lower grades.

The entire subject of teaching of Czech and making it available in schools is a monumental undertaking.

We cannot become discouraged, but CESAT can be the driving force to keep the subject of Czech study before those who have an affinity for Czech.

We cannot accomplish all we have in our dreams in one school year or a "two - year term" of office in CESAT. We now have started anew with an apparent energy which is so pleasing.

Your ideas will keep the momentum that is needed to accomplish our goals alive. So, I urge anyone having any comments to make to forward them to me. The annual meetings and few Executive Committee meetings held each year do not allow the time needed to adequately debate vital issues.

A Report on the Proposed Symposium: Czech Music In Texas

By Chairman Clinton Machann, CESAT Symposium Committee Department of English, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77840 --Recently, I met with Ms. Jody Bates who is directing the State Sesquicentennial activities for Brazos County. She was enthusiastic about CESAT's plans for a program focusing on Czech music in Texas.

After carefully considering time limitations, deadlines, and schedule conflicts, we decided on a tentative program date of NOVEMBER 14 - 16 [Friday through Sunday], 1986. If you know , of a major conflict with that date, please write and let me know right away. I'm afraid that almost any choice of a date will result in some conflicts, but I want to avoid them as much as possible.

I thoroughly inspected the Brazos Center in Bryan and found it to be an excellent facility for our needs. It has a large auditorium with a platform stage (the capacity is 2-3 thousand) that can be adapted to musical performances, dance performances, and ballroom dancing. It also has several classrooms which can be used for lectures, demonstrations, and special exhibits; "studio rooms" with excellent acoustics; a lecture/rehearsal hall with projection facilities; a concourse display area for commercial exhibits; and an outdoor pavilion.

Working with such a facility and a 21/2 day program, we should be able to schedule a large number and variety of activities. If the anticipated funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and from several Texas Czech fraternal organizations is realized, we should be able to pay at least the travel expenses of even the amateur performing and exhibiting groups and individual lectures, etc.

Please send me your ideas for porformancec, lectures or presentations, and exhibits. In each case, please include a specific contact name and address (and phone number, if possible) for each group or individual suggested. Possibilities include:

A. Amateur, semi - professional and professional individual performers, ensembles, bands, orchestras (possibly including one or two Czechoslovakian groups, preferably Moravian).

B. Singing groups (folk songs, hymns, etc.).

C. Dance groups.

D. Lecturers (or presenters of slide shows, taped music, demonstrations on the piano or other instruments, dance clinics for adults or children, etc.).

E. Exhibitors of songbooks, record collections, etc. (Space will also be provided for exhibitions of almost any Czech - related art or handicraft.

Vendors of Czech - related products will also be accommodated for a small set - up fee.).

We will also attempt to schedule a good (authentic) Czech dance band for each evening of the symposium (at least partially funded by ticket sales) and a performance by a major Texas municipal symphony orchestra Saturday or Sunday afternoon with selections from Dvorak, Smetana, and especially Janacek (if possible).

Although the symposium is scheduled far in the future, we should begin plans immediately in order to ensure a program we can be proud of.

I appreciate the suggestions that some of you have already sent it. ***

News From the Czech Club at U.T. February 3, a small group of students had planned to go to Moravia, Texas, to attend the Czech Mass and Festival but the weather did not cooperate. The event was cancelled.

Most of the Czech students at U.T. attended a Czech film entitled "The Apple Gang" which was shown on the campus February 7th. The film was "quite explicit" and its theme was difficult to determine.

The Prague Symphony Orchestra played at the Performing Arts Center on the campus February 12th. The members of the Club enjoyed the performance and will provide more information on this event at a later date.

The Czech Club will hold its big annual event Saturday afternoon, March 23, 1985, in Taylor, Texas, at the SPJST Hall. The entire Czech community of Texas is invited to attend the program of the Annual Conference of Czech Students and Teachers. A detailed program will be available later. Announcements The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas will have an Executive Committee meeting in Taylor, Texas at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall, March 23rd beginning at 10 a.m.

The Annual Conference of Czech Students and Teachers will be held in the afternoon of March 23rd, also at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall, in Taylor. This event is sponsored by the University of Texas Czech Club.

Lodge 4 To Meet March 10 Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 10, 1985 at the Grant Building in Hallettsville with Vice President Linda Mikush taking over as Lodge 4 president due to the death of my father and Lodge 4 President Frank Zabransky, January 29th after a long illness. Daddy served ably as president for well over ten years and enjoyed working with SPJST and its members very much. He will be missed by his family, relatives and friends.

Resolutions of Sympathy were read

by Gaye Galetka for our departed members Tracy Trlica and Frank Zabransky.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the December meeting which were approved. We did not meet in January due to the ice and snow that weekend.

Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky, Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka and Co - Youth Leader Evelyn Holy.

President Linda Mikush appointed the following committees to serve for this year: Resolution -- Gaye Galetka, Gaynelle Chudej and Victoria Zak, Audit Committee -- Alfonse Holly, Elsie Maschek and Patsy Zabransky.

A new vice president will be elected at the March meeting.

Refund checks were given out and meeting adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served.

New member is Cassie Jo McCauley, and Agnes Holub from Lodge 95, Seymour transferred to Lodge 35, Elk. Youth Leader Louise Burney reported that the youth had a Valentine contest. They will have a kite - flying contest in March.

Dear Members and Friends: The February meeting of the El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40, was held, Monday, February 10, 1985 at 9:50 p.m. following the bingo game.

President James Kulcak began the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a minute of silent prayer. The roll of officers was called by Secretary Laverne Bacak; two officers were absent. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as reported in the Vestnik.

Interest rates on the loan dropped, beginning in February.

March Meeting When the Entertainment Committee met Wednesday, February 6th, we decided on a covered dish meal for the March 17th meeting. We are asking the ladies to bring a covered dish. The Entertainment Committee will provide cookies, which will probably be "greenish" since March 17th is also St. Patrick 's Day. We really had a great turnout at our February lodge meeting, with 84 members present. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the delicious deer chili and beans donated by Sister Ruby Orsag, in honor of her husband's birthday.

The drinks were donated by Sister Darlene Engelke and Sister Cory Pruitt, in honor of their husbands' birthdays. The partries and other trimmings were also delicious.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our members at Linden Hall, not only for the meetings and socials but, as often as you can come, to the dances, for bingo, or just to visit. We, of the Entertainment Committee, strive to provide all our members with pleasant, wholesome entertainment.

Lodge 133 Holds Regular Meeting San Antonio Lodge held their meeting February 17 at 1505 S. Gevers.

The meeting was well - attended and we are grateful to the members.

After the meal was served, a good visit was had by some and others entered into the social activity. The ladies have decided that the men should treat us several more times this year. This club is a hard - working committee here at Lodge 88, but they also know how to enjoy themselves. If you are interested in joining them, come to their meeting the first Tuesday of each month for the breakfast at 8 a.m. As President Ed Miculka says, "The only qualifications are: you must be a lodge member, at least 55 years of age, retired, and handsome."

I would like to commend Brother Alvin Sefcik, president of Lodge 173 and his officers, also his members for the $1,000 donation they made to Lodge 172 in memory of all Lodge 173 members, also the compassion shown by making a $1,000 donation to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville, Texas. I am sure it was greatly needed and appreciated.

Dear Readers: It has been quite some time since I gave you a report on our Library, Archives and Museum so today I will try to give you a report on last year's attendance of our museum .

Foreign countries were represented as follows: Turkey -1, Holland -- 2, West Germany -- 2, England -- 3, Cuba -- 2, and Czechoslovakia -- 12.

Gillilland Elementary and Doll Dozell, Bill and Irene School in the Eagle Mountain - Shephard, Goob and Dean Wingfield, Saginaw School District. He is in the Mary Ruth Sandel and Louis Grisham; 5th grade and will compete in the area newlyweds Kirk and Cloteal Watson Spelling Bee February 27th at Irma were also there.

use of the kitchen and the cake walk Sunday afternoon, February 17th, at the dance Joyce Tesar anounced that there will be a dance for Abused Children Sunday, April 21st.

Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Svacek's granddaughter, Mary Dedericks, was one of 22 students to spend five weeks in Ireland and Scotland. They toured places such as Blarney Castle in Belfast, Ireland and the Edinburg Castle in Scotland. They spent three weeks studying history and literature in Dublin, capitol of Ireland. Mary is majoring in International Affairs at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. She is the daughter of Mrs. Mary Jane Dedericks.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Bennie Bartek, Clara Cohn, Rose Nieswiodomy and Maggie Konecny.

Our visitor was Imogene Reeves. We hope she will come and visit us, again.

Betty Billingston, one of the hostesses, could not be present due to the illness of her father, so Dona Hubenak substituted in her place.

Dear Members and Friends: It seems that our weatherman has just plain forgotten that in order to have a well - balanced weather report, they should include a few bright sunny days along with the cold, dark, foggie, rainy, dreary days that this month has so far brought forth. It is really hard to be optimistic under these circumstances and it looks like we will have to be on the alert next month because March is the beginning of the tornado season.

The meeting was opened by President Florence Greer. Frances Grizzard read the minutes which were approved as read. Evelyn Spacek gave the treasurer's report.

Lillie McMillen, chairperson of the Sunshine Committee, gave her report on cards sent and on the "thank you" cards that were received from Marie Tesar, Clara Cohn and Mrs. Belota. A letter was read from Bennie Bartek reminding members to try and send cards to Lillie Matusevich who is in San Antonio. As soon as we can get the nursing home address where she is, we will send more cards. Lillie McMillen also gave us a message to say "Hello" from Anne Polk, who stopped at D FW Airport enroute to California. Anne still lives in Pennsylvania and we really miss her in our circle. We all send our love and hope she will be able to meet with us, again, sometime.

We were sorry to learn that Dona Hubenak's son - in - law fell and broke his rib. We were also sorry to learn that Rosie Zalesak, while getting ready to attend our meeting, accidentally dropped her food chopper on her foot and seriously injured her foot. We hope both will recover soon! We wish to extend our sympathy to Rose Nieswiodomy and to her family on the loss of her husband. May he rest in eternal peace.

Club Goes To Corpus Christi The. San Antonio Czech Choral Club had been invited to participate in the celebration sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas which took place at the Bayfront Plaza in Corpus Christi, March 2nd.

Our club has participated in many Czech functions throughout the state, but this is a first to Corpus Christi by the club. The members were excited about going and traveling on a chartered bus with many of our friends, a total of 45.

The program that was planned, was very interesting. We were able to see, once again, the many friends that we were with in various singing groups.

The San Antonio group was scheduled to perform at 2:30 p.m.

Our club has quite a few commitments until June. June 8th, the club will be celebrating its 15th year with a dinner and dance at the St. Margaret Mary Activity Center. More details on this celebration will be given at a later date.

February 18th was a sad day for the group because one of our singers, Angeline Simek,was laid to rest. Her request was to be buried in her Choral Club costume and, if possible, the group to sing beautiful Czech songs at the funeral that she liked so very much. We all were honored and granted her wish. To her husband, Anton and family, we want to express our sincere sympathy and may her soul rest in eternal peace.

The Czech painted Easter eggs (kraslice) are not only beautifully decorated, but are very symbolic as well. There are many legends and much folklore associated with the egg.

The Macedonians were the first Christians to paint or dye eggs which the children sold in the market place.

The most revered tradition is the annual egg - roll, where eggs are rolled down a grassy slope; symbolizing the rolling away of the stone from in front of Christ's tomb on Easter morning.

One Czech legend has it that each new bride must break an egg upon entering her new home, assuring giving birth to many children.

The word kraslice , painted Easter egg, is taken from krasny' , meaning beautiful. The painting of eggs is especially extensive in the Slavic tribes from where the most beautiful and intricate designs of the well - known Moravian eggs come from. Then follows the Slovakian, Polish, Russian, and Ukraine. Painting the eggs was originally all done with natural colors.

Making the colored and designed eggs is very tedious and most time consuming. For example, a sharp needle or tiny knife is used to create the design. The most popular method being to dip the hand blown shell into cool wax, cut out the design, paint it, rewax, and go on to the rest of the overall picture, scene or geometric design.

Another method, used particularily in parts of Bohemia and Slovakia is called bunging, where on the white shell of the egg, you put an ornament, particularily leaves, dried flowers, or grain heads with bees wax, paint the egg, remove the wax and the ornamental design is removed, leaving the desired design on the whiteness of the egg shell.

In Czechoslovakia, the young men would weave switches from willow branches and then go to the homes of young girls and ask for a gift of beautifully decorated Easter eggs. If they did not receive one, the young lady would earn a switching. This was all in fun.

Statewide Youth Leader's Retreat The Youth Leader's Retreat is scheduled for March 23 - 24. Activities will begin promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and conclude immediately after the noon meal . on Sunday. You may arrive Friday evening, but there will be no meal or cooking facilities available. The first meal to be served will be Saturday breakfast at 8 a.m.

All DYCs, youth leaders and assistant youth leaders are invited to attend the retreat. All persons attending should keep in mind that this paid by the Supreme Lodge, as well as mileage reimbursement for one car per lodge. Only persons arriving by 9 a.m.

Saturday morning and attending the full retreat will be entitled to reimbursement.

When the music stops, each child runs for a shamrock, clasping his hand over it. One player will be left out, he must drop out of the game which is again resumed. Players left out, stand aside and clap to the beat of the music. One shamrock is removed from the wall each time the music begins again. The winner is the one who clasps his hand over the last remaining shamrock.

(Players who are eliminated may begin their craft at that time, so you can give help individually.)

For Animals Coat: Leave each napkin folded in quarters, as it originally c•mes in the package. Tear the folded napkin into strips, 1/4' to 1/2' wide; then tear each strip apart at the fold. The strips will be about 6 inches long. Fold each strip in half to 3 inches long.

Cover the body first. Glue the folded end of the napkin strip to the body at the neckline, letting it hang down loose over the body. For the lamb, the napkin strips are crumpled and then glued on for the close, curly effect of lamb's wool.

To cover the head and face, tear strips from 1/2 inch to 2 inches long. To make fur stand out from sides of face and behind eyes and, ears, glue the fold of the strip at a right angle, as shown in Figure A. For areas in front of eyes, over the nose and around face, the fold is glued flat, as shown in Figure B. When the animal is completed, you can adjust the lengths of the fur by tearing off a bit of some of the strips to give your animal individuality!

(The lamb is recommended for children 6-8.) ANIMALS CAN BE USED AS PARTY DECORATIONS, FAVORS OR SIMPLE STICK PUPPETS.

Figure out the average number of revolutions per day. (Have each child make a wind- gaugeto take home. Each child can report back the next meeting his average readings per day. Compare results.

You can figure out a wind ratio using the number of revolutions of your foam cups and the average wind for a day as listed in the newspaper.

Cup and Napkins Animals To make either a March Lion or lamb, you need the following supplies: 2 foam cups, some paper napkins, heavy paper, thick craft glue and a black felt marker and one brass paper fastener.

Lodge 88, Houston Y uth Club News The youth club had a February 6, 1985 meeting. Mrs. Stayton, our new youth leader, was talking about going to the Rodeo.

The youth members were also asked to clean tables February 10th (Anniversary Day).

At Anniversary Day, the youth helped clean up. Mr. Leshikar and his family were there visiting our lodge.

The lodge had different activities like bingo and dancing.

We planned a cake walk for February 14 (Valentine's Day).

Centerville Lodge 188 Youth Club Valentine dance contest winners in ages 0 to 18: First place -- Charile Lumms and Leann Dodds'.

His rural background, his extensive civil practice, and his experience as a prosecutor give him a valuable insight into the problems of the 50th District.

He will represent King, Knox, Cottle, and Baylor counties.

Judge Hajek received his BBA degree in accounting in 1972 from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and his Law Degree in 1976 from Texas Tech University School of Law. He had been in private law practice in Seymour, Texas for eight years and also served as County Attorney of Baylor County for four years during that time.

Judge Hajek and his wife, Jo Nell, have two sons; Dustin, age 41/2 years old, and Jonathan, age 17 months.

Judge Hajek, Dustin, and Jonatharl are all members of SPJST Sam Houston Lodge No. 73, in Seymour, Texas.

The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Brad N. :ell has been named a 1985 United States Award winner in Mathematics.

This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Brad, who attends Gatesville Junior High, was nominated for the National Award by Mr. Larry Brazzil, a Math instructor at the school. Brad will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally.

"Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America's history. Certainly United States Achievement Academy award winners should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement," said Dr. George Stevens, executive Director of the United States Achievement Academy.

The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors or other school sponsors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. who passed away Wednesday, January 30, 1985, in a Tomball hospital.

Sister Slovak was born March 27, 1905, the daughter of Joe and Agnes Maresh. She was reared in the Nelsonville community and attended the Scranton Grove Public School.

Sister Slovak was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church, a member of the Nelsonville Christian Sisters, and the S `JST Bleiberville Lodge No. 33.

The former Miss Ruth aresh was married to Alfred C. Stepan who preceded her in death. February 15, 1958 she was married to Frank Slovak.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

January 31st at the Nelsonville Brethren Church with the Rev. James Hejl officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery near Nelsonville, Survivors include her husband, Frank Slovak of Brenham; stepdaughter, June Rose Hagen of Yoakum; two step-grandchildren, Susan Motal of Shiner and Janet Baker of Gonzales; sisters, Sadie Chernosky of Nelsonville, Mrs. Milady Stepan of Nelsonville, Mrs. Lillie Stepan of Hempstead and Mrs. Alma Lahrmann of Houston; and one Ben A. Maresh of brother, Bleiberville.

Sister Slovak was preceded in death by her first husband, Alfred C. Stepan, parents and 5 brothers, Pallbearers were Lee Nell Maresh, Alden Chernosky, Billy J. Stepan, Herman W. Hoff, Billy Lahrmann and Barry Maresh.

The arrangements were under the direction of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home of :divine.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee, in behalf of all the members of this fraternal organization, wish to express our sympathy and share in the sorrow of the family of our departed sister, IviARIE !MED, who passed away February 8, 1985, at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II at Needville.

Funeral services were held at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg with burial in the Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard, February 11th.

Sister Reed, a longtime resident of Fort Bend County, was first made a member of SPJST Lodge No. 28 and she later transferred her membership to Lodge No. 175.

Survivors include one son, Edward Eugene Reed of Sugarland; two brothers, John Bohacik of Houston and Edward Bohacik of Needville, and four grandchildren.

We regret the parting; however, may the memory of this wonderful lady live with us always.

Neni tedy divu, te se stala znalkyni pisma.

Tim spie, ie osud jeji kroky svedl — s grafologem. Jako manielka byla nejprve jeho asistentkou. Kdyi Julie Flanderkova na tehdeig im praiskern magistratu jako prvni grafolog poiadala o zapsani do seznamu soudnich znalcill, referent si nejdrive nevedel rady, jak by meta kvalifikaci prokazat. Pak ji dal posoudit rukopis sve divky.
