roups To Perform At First Annual Czech Heritage Festival In Corpus Christi

Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Rudy Dybala, will entertain at the "first- Czech Festival at the Bayfront Exhibit Hall.

The Czech Folk Dancers of West will perform their lively dances at the Czech celebration in the "City by the Sea". This group, under the direction of Maggie Grmela, rehearses every week and they hold_ several projects for their outof-town transportation. The entire group is an inspiration wherever they entertain and enjoy promoting the Czech culture.

Sunday, February 17 was the Diamond Jubilee celebration of SPJST Lodge Pokrok Dallasu No. 84, which translates to "Progress of Dallas" as had been advertised; it marked 75 years, since the lodge was given its charter.

The day began with a delicious meal with all the additional side dishes (a meal like that would cost 2 or 3 times as much at any restaurant!) by B&L Catering who did a superb job.

The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, directed by Brother Sid Pokladnik, opened the program with our United States National Anthem which was sung by Lodge 84 President Sister Ida Schulz; and Sister Debbie Becan Kerr sung the Czech National Anthem.

Outgoing Lodge 84 President Joe Ondrusek had a few, opening remarks and during appropriate times recognized the many coworkers who helped long hours to make this occasion possible.

Among one of the guest speakers, Brother Jerry Bartos, a Dallas Civic leader, a former Dallas ISD Board Member, and a member of SPJST Jaro Lodge No. 130, was not a stranger to many of us, who spoke about the Czech - Moravian people and the need for us to preserve the customs, heritage and language of our ancestors; we certainly have nothing to be ashamed of, was well concluded by Brother Jerry!

Lodge 84 can boast of having the longest active youth club and same youth leader in the entire SPJST; Sister Bessie Petr, known to many of the outgrown teenagers in her lodge as "Mama Bessie" has a .way of motivating cultural interest among the old and young generations. It was gratifying to see two groups of dancers in their "kroj" who danced the Beseda. Keep up the good work!

The other two speakers; District III Director Sid Pokladnik and SL President Howard Leshikar, both had inspirational and informational material for their speeches, fitting for such an occasion.

The remainder of the program included the 50 - year membership presentation to its six recipients; the annual "Brother and Sister of the Year" awards; the drawing of the diamond; the Dallas Czech Choral Club (composed of singers from the Czech organizations located in Dallas), under the direction of Brother Bob Liska, presented many beautiful Czech songs. Brother Calvin Chervenka brought out some of the highlights of the songs the group sang.

Music by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra concluded the Jubilee's festivities, which was an enjoyable afternoon, from start to finish and we also enjoyed seeing all our fraternal friends, again. Even the weatherman cooperated!

Millions of the U.S. citizens suffer from back pain. For many, the pain is so severe and persistent that surgery must be performed, but many people with back pain do find relief through less extreme measures.

The leading causes of pain are gradual wear and tear, emotional and physical stress and lack of proper exercise, according to FDA. The most common sources of problems in the lower back are worn facet joints, herniated--sometimes called slipped--discs and pinched nerves. There are also many other possible causes, including arthritis, circulatory problems, kidney infections, viral pneumonia, other various infections, even cancer..

Consult a physician before embarking on any program of treatment or exercise.

It may take the doctor some time to diagnose your problem; the physical damage and the amount of pain felt may not correspond; also, disc abnormalities often don't show up on X - rays.

Once a diagnosis has been completed, the most commonly prescribed treatment is a limitation of activity and, in severe cases, complete bed rest. Often prescribed are Aspirin and other painkillers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as naproxen or ibuprofen, or muscle relaxants. Other treatments may include hot or cold packs, ointment rubs, back braces, traction, physical therapy and exercise.

Probably about 200,000 patients each year are candidates for disc surgery, which has a success rate ranging from 50 to 95 percent, depending on the ailment, but it is expensive and involves long recuperation. Half of these patients might benefit from treatment with chymopapain, a papay - derived enzyme recently approved by the FDA. Conventional wisdom has always dictated that nothing made of metal can be placed in a microwave oven without risking radiation, shock or fire, but a new study by Underwriters Laboratories for the Aluminum Foil Container Manufacturers Association concludes there is no apparent risk when heating packaged frozen foods in aluminum is no apparent risk when heating packaged frozen foods in aluminum containers in a microwave as long as proper precaustions are taken. Members of SPJST Lodge No. 10 of Shiner are extending congratulations to John Mikes of Shiner, who is 97 years old, on out - living his insurance policy.

John and his twin brother, the late Charles Mikes, were born December 18, 1887 in Netolice, Czechoslovakia to Karel and Mary (Mertlik) Mikes.

At the age of 13, he came to America with his parents landing in Galveston August 4, 1901. They came to Moulton by train and stayed with some people by the name of Freytag.

They made the trip by wagon to attend the August 15 Feast in Praha.

About a year later they established a farm south of Shiner.

John Mikes and Ludmila Janda were married December 28, 1912 in Shiner. They were blessed with two children, Fannie Millikin of Shiner and Laddie Mikes of Gonzales.

Mr. Mikes also has 'a granddaughter, Sharon Vinklarek, and three great - grandchildren, all of Yoakum.

Mr. and Mrs. Mikes left the farm in 1923 and moved to the present home in Shiner where he has resided since. Mrs. Mikes passed away December 16, 1963.

The meeting was called to order by President Bohac. In attendance were D.I. Bohac, Morris Boutwell, newly elected Treasurer Dorothy Pechal and Frank Klinkovsky. Absent were Ronnie Rieger and Albert Lange. Also attending was District II Director Willie E. Kohutek .

There was much discussion of District II spring meeting, and details were finalized to include a bake sale, the agenda for the meeting and price of plates -- $1.75. All who attend are urged to bring sweets and salads.

There was a reported balance of $313.30 in the General Fund and $0.26 in the Youth Fund.

Mileage checks were issued to attending officers.

District V Meeting March 10 Dear Members, Have you made plans to attend your district meeting al Lodge 172, Pasadena, on Sunday, March 10? You should not miss this day of fellowship which starts with registration at 11 a.m.

The host lodge will serve a barbecued brisket dinner with all the trimmings. They will also provide free beer. The always enjoyable Choral Club and Concert Orchestra from Lodge 88 will entertain during the noon hour.

The meeting will start promptly at 1:30 p.m. Everyone in the district should take part in this meeting. You will also be eligible to win one of the door prizes.

Following the meeting, there will be a C/W dance with the "Texas Brew" playing.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Tomasek who celebrated their 61st anniversary February 14th and to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Chervenka who also had an anniversary. (Johnny and Carol were the first ones to have a wedding at the hall when it was first built.)

Lodge 25, Ennis To Recognize 50- Year Members Dear Members and Friends: February 14, at 8 p.m., the meeting was called to order by President James Whitfill. Sergeant - at - Arms Garry Mizell led the Pledge of Allegiance. President Whitfill thanked everyone who helped to make the Ellis County Equipment Company banquet such a success.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Financial Secretary Margaret Krajca due to the late arrival of Recording Secretary Kay Kovar.

Brother Joe Trojacek requested that the name of Frankie Svehlak be added to the Bar Committee. The Bar Committee now has these members: Joe Trojacek, Eugene Jakubik and Frankie Svehlak. Sister Kovar then read the minutes of the Executive Board. All these minutes were approved as read After a lengthy discussion, the following recommendation was voted on and passed. It states: all workers including bar mixers will now work free. This will be on a trail basis since as bar mixers have previously been paid. Every worker will now receive a complimentary beverage ticket.

The members voted to have the 50 year pins forwarded to the lodge to be presented to the members at a meeting.

This year's 50 - year members are Emma Haskovec, Frank A. Haskovec and Anna Mary Trojacek.

Congratulations!

Sister Linda Trojacek has taken the job of youth leader for another year. I am sure she will do another good job as she did last year.

Treasurer Emma Trojacek gave her financial report which proved to be very favorable.

The two amendments to the Rules and Regulations were discussed next.

The first was discussed and voted on.

Every adult member who wishes to vote at the meetings must pay local

dues which are $3 per year and these are due in January of each year. The second amendment which was made by Emma Trojacek was withdrawn; the Kitchen Committee has appointed Hazel Laza as treasurer of kitchen funds.

New member for this month is Jake Austin Holland, and added on insurance was for Kevin Kudrna. A big welcome to Jake Austin who is the grandson of Financial Secretary Margaret Krajca.

Three very deserving ladies of the lodge enjoyed a surprise; their names were called to come forward to receive a silver tray inscribed with "Special Lady of SPJST" and their name on their tray; these ladies are Mrs. Annie Martinek, Mrs. Albina Nesuda and Mrs. Annie Trojacek. When there is dough to be made for kolache and strudels, these ladies are always on the job. They are a pleasure to work with.

Congratulations! May you mix us a lot more dough.

A special door prize of a box of Valentine candy was awarded to Evelyn Slovak. LUCKY! Kay passed out the premium refund checks after which the meeting was adjourned. After the meeting, a social with punch and a beautiful Valentine cake (baked by Betty's Bakery) was enjoyed by all the members.

Fifty - two members attended the meeting.

By the time you read this, you will have danced your .cares away to the popular Vrazel Polka Band of Cameron, Texas. Next on the entertainment calendar is Fool's Gold Band (country - western). Reports are that this is a very good band. So, you all come! Watch your paper for a Sunday afternoon dance with one of the best polka bands, The Mikulas.

There will be lunch served before the dance. Look for the details in the paper. This will be March 17th; then March 23rd, the Mikulas will be back for another outstanding performance.

Lodge 28, East Barnard Meeting Dear Members: The monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas , for the month of March will be at 2 p.m. March 3rd. Besides the items already on the agenda, there will be some special reports; also plans will be made to attend the District VI spring meeting in Moravia, March 24th.

The coffee pot and food will again be the convening area for the "meeting after the meeting, Kaffeeklatsch."

The February 3rd meeting was a cold event. Most all members present were huddled around the stoves to keep warm. A goodly quorum accepted all regular reports as given.

The Audit Committee gave its reports on their audit of the books. The books were in balance and the lodge is in good shape financially. Several motions were made and passed to take care of lodge business.

Sister Nezval won the door prize and, in turn, donated it to the special kitchen fund.

Even with enough food and hot

coffee, the conversation and eating were limited due to the cold. Sisters Janik, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval furnished the additional food to go with that furnished by the lodge.

Lodge 81 Donates $300 To Charities Dear Members: The February 10th meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek at 2 p.m.

Lillie Teykl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were fifteen members present.

We were honored to have our new District V Director, Jerry Prochazka and his wife, Delores, as guests. We hope they will come again; it was a pleasure to have them.

We are sad to report that we lost one member, Ervin Hurta, our former sheriff, this month. He will be missed by all; it was said that his funeral was the biggest that Needville ever had.

Our books were audited by Shirley Basse and found in order. She complimented our bookkeepers on their excellent work.

The roll call showed all officers present, and all reports were accepted.

I am happy to report that, to our knowledge, no members were on the sick list.

Due to the District V meeting, which will be held in Pasadena March 10th, our meeting was changed to the second Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m.

We voted to donate $100 to the Needville Fire Department, $100 to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville, $50 to the Richmond State School, and $50 to the March of Dimes.

We want to welcome two new members, Natalie and William John Warhol. Additional insurance was purchased by Shelly Denise Macha.

Refund checks were handed out by Mary Werner.

We had a good turnout for our annual chili supper, February 12th.

Vlasta Now otny donated a beautifully - decorated Valentine cake, and the Macha families donated a beautiful white ceramic basket with a red flower arrangement and an iron; the lucky winners were Gladys Janczak — the flower arrangement, Ethel Horak -- the iron, and Harry Teykl -the cake.

Thanks to all you ladies for the pastries you've brought.

Lodge 88 Choral Group, under the supervision of Tim Kostom, will render

Lodge 88 Houston To Perform In CC Festival Dear Members and Friends: The SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and the Choral Group will perform at the Czech Heritage Society Festival in Corpus Christi, Saturday, March 2, 1985. This will be in the Corpus Christi Bayfront Plaza Exhibit Hall At the conclusion of the day's program there will be a Grand Finale in which the various Czech singing groups from many parts of Texas join to sing with the orchestra. We have made tapes of the songs and sent them to the different singing groups so they will be familiar for singing with the orchestra.

This Czech Festival in Corpus Christi will be an annual event each year sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas, so try not to miss it this year! The Sokols will be there and so will many other Czech organizations and musical groups. Just before the dance that night, there will be a Parade of Costumes in which there will be hundreds of authentic costumes representing different regions of Czechoslovakia.

The orchestra and choral group will also perform at the SPJST District V meeting at Lodge 172 in Pasadena, Texas, Sunday, March 10th. In addition, they will perform at the Houston Festival in front of the City Hall, Sunday, March 31, 1985.

These musicians and singers devote much time, talent and travel by attending rehearals every week throughout the year in order to present to the public the beautiful traditional Czech songs and music.

Lodge 92, Ft. Worth February Meeting

Blue Room Chairman Ed Miculka with his assistants, Willie Wehring and Millie Manak have announced an "FFF" night in our private club Friday, March 8th. When questioned further they explained that it will be a FUN - FILLED FRIDAY! Drinks will be served at a reduced price, chips and dips furnished for everyone, and the best part will feature Estelle Kelly at the piano for an oldtime sing - a - long.

The fun starts at 7 p.m. and, if all goes well, we will help Nat close up at the regular closing time. Plan to spend the evening with them or just part of the evening if that suits you better. They are looking forward to a fun - time March 8th. Don't forget it!

Tickets are now on sale in the lodge office for the Manny Green Orchestra appearing in the Chandelier Ballroom March 9th. Tickets are $17 per couple.

Al Pierson Big Band USA played here Friday and Saturday, February 15th and 16th. Herman Liebscher, Carol and J.R. Bruce along with Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupt hosted the Friday dance. I didn't get the information on the Saturday dance, yet. We didn't have a sellout this time, so, if you missed them this time they play again here at Lodge 88 Saturday, April 20th. Al Pierson is now a transplanted Texan so come and make him feel welcome.

The District V meeting will be held in Pasadena at Lodge 172 Sunday, March 10th. District President Tillie Helmcamp will be pleased to see a large crowd there. She al*ays has a short business meeting and enjoyable entertainment.

The 20th anniversary celebration went well. We had a delicious dinner, and a good dance with bingo in between. The activities and projects were enjoyed by all. The weatherman didn't cooperate but that's normal for this time of year. Ed and I just got from a quick trip to northern • - 1 - day Ohio and after being in 4 A, -__, blizzard with a foot of snow and ice I'll never complain about our Texas winters again!

This month Brother Albert and Sister Helen Kubala celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, Brother Dick and Sister Martha Durham celebrated their 34th and Sister Liz and her husband, Elmer Howard, celebrated their 27th. Congratulations!

Thanks to Brothers Kenneth Krivanek, Carl Zich and Johnny Tesar for the Memorial Board in which we can honor our loved ones who are no longer with us.

Sister Sherrie Watkins and I are busy organizing the benefit for the "Kash for Kids" program to aid abused children in our area and hope to see all our friends there Sunday, April 21st from 3 to 7 p.m. at National Tr^ 11 The Country Boys Polka Band of Ennis will provide the musicBrother Louis Kubala has already started the contributions for "Kash for Kids" with a generous check followed by one from Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Chaloupka.

There are a lot of good dances coming up at National Hall so we hope to see our friends there and hope to meet some new friends, too.

Lodge 107 Floresville Donates $500 After being "snowed out" for our January meeting, a large group of loyal SPJST members gathered at the lodge hail for our February 10, 1985 meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Bayer and Trey Bielefeld led the pledge.

A moment of silence was held for deceased members Alvin J. Hrna and Dorothy Novak. Our lodge will miss their presence and we offer their families our sincerest sympathy.

Reports from the secretary, treasurer and Auditing Committee were heard.

Helen Bayer, was a most welcome visitor. She has been in and out of the hospital frequently and it was good to see her at the meeting.

Sue Meadows, accompanied by her husband, Dick, paid our lodge .a visit.

Sue spoke on some of her aims as our new State Youth Director. They were guests of Bill and Maxine Pavliska.

President Bayer gave detailed reports of the SL 8 percent refund to our lodge. He also reported that he had made a payment on the note to the Supreme Lodge and purchased a new beer license.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer stated the youth club made Valentine's Day corsages for the mothers and grandmothers. Camp dates are set for June 5, 6, 7, and 8, at Lone Star Camp in La Grange. The youth are excited about going to camp.

Our lodge received an invitation from Corpus Christi for Czech Heritage Day. A charter bus from San the time of this Antonio is going, writing, there are no seats available.

Cy Weldon Pavliska is a new youth club member and buying additional insurance were Donald Hrna and Stephanie Burleson.

Lodge 177 Leads In Charitable Contributions Dear Members: What a feast we had before the February 13th meeting of Lodge 177, Academy. There was turkey and dressing plus every type of covered dish and dessert.

The meeting was called to order at 8:01 p.m. by President BillHutka. The pledge to the U.S. flag was then recited.

Roll call of officers showed all were present.

Recording Secretary Pat Tomastik read the minutes from the last meeting and they were approved as read.

Correspondence from the Supreme Lodgestated that Leopold Zajicek was to receivea 50 - year membership pin.

There was $3,000 transferred from the KitchenFund to the SpecialFund.

Eleven new members were voted on and approved; namely, Bruce Arnold II, Sharon K. Veselka, Cruz Lopez Garcia, James E. Johnson, Christopher K. Parker, Emily S. Parker, William P. Johnson, Angela Johnson, Michelle Anderson and Thomas and Linda Kelso. New member Sharon Veselka was in attendance and has already been put to work. A double welcome, Sharon!

The Board of Trustees' report was given by Edward Bartek.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik reported that she had sixteen members and two guests present.

President Bill Hutka thanked the members who took down the Christmas decorations, namely, Otis and Jackie Beck, Frances Love and Pat Tomastik and also those who mopped and waxed the dance floor; namely, Helen and Larry Bland, Pat Tomastik, Frances Love, Otis Beck and Bill Hutka.

A motion was made and approved to letthe ladiesuse the hall for exercise and aerobic dancing; anyone wanting to join us feel free to come any Monday, Thursday or Friday night at 6 p.m. The more the merrier! · Walter Jezek made a suggestion to have a system to look after the tax matters so we do not have the problem we ran into in the past. President Bill Hutka assured the members the trustees would take care of this.

Ann Tomastik asked that the members let the youth club and parents cater the barbecue for Lodge 177 tenth anniversary on April 21st. A motion was made and approved to permit the youth club to do this fór a money project.

Othen Jezek withdrew from the Auditing Committee; Edward Bartek was appointed in his place.

Bingo night was resumed every Tuesdaynight; the doors open at 5:30 p.m.

SL President Howard Leshikar spoke to the members briefly and commended our Lodge 177 on being the leader in the state with our contributions to the Child Abuse program and being behind our youth club 100 percent.

There being no other business, the meeting adjourned at 8:55. Don't forget the March meeting!

Lodge 179 Warrenton To Meet Dear Members and Guests: A large group of members and interested visitors enjoyed the tasty fish fry meal including a great variety of side dishes and delicious desserts Thursday night, February 14 at the conclusion of the business session of Warrenton Lodge No. 179 with President Harold Bergmann presiding.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and the thank you note from the Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch, and the letter

from Alice Pechal. The letter was considered, but action of this nature must be disposed of at the annual meeting.

Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report, which was accepted,as given.

Next Arnold Peters presented a very favorable financial report.

We were happy to have had Tinny Ziese, who was greatly improved after spending some time in a Houston hospital, at our meeting. We wish any others on the sick list a speedy recovery.

A silent prayer was held for Ralph Beard's father who passed away recently. May he rest in eternal peace.

Sympathy was extended to the family.

The Food Committee stated that the lodge will furnish char - broiled steaks at our March 14th at 7 p.m. meeting, and members bring a covered dish or dessert.

Thanks were expressedto those who fried the fish and served the food and members for bringing side dishes.

After adjournment all enjoyed the delicious meal and refreshments.

The remainder of the evening was spent in just good "ole fellowship."

News From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: Another weekend is past and, before this letter is printed, the Ernie Kucera dance will be history; hope everyone who attended enjoyed themselves. If you liked the music tell your officers and maybe they will be able to get more good bands like that to come to our lodge.

This past weekend has been a busy one for Gracie and me; we attended a party for Goodyear · employees in Dallas, Friday evening and, after leavingthere, we attended the benefit dance for Roy Hampton at Lodge 180 in Burleson. It was good to see how SPJST members work together to help a fellow member who needs help.

Saturday, I helped my mother take care of some of her business and took her grocery shopping and Gracie needed to go to Dallas and help her sister. After getting home I had a plumbingjob to do here at home so it was late and we were tired and didn't go to the dance at Lodge 183. Sorry, fellow members, I was not present to help you cleanup the lodge after the dance. I will try to do better next month.

Sunday, February 17th, Gracie and I, Robert, Pat and Shelby Sill, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees and Juanita Cote from Lodge 183 attended the 75th anniversary.We enjoyed the program, and the fraternal spirit shown by the members of Lodge 84. We hope their lodge has many more years of growth and fraternalism.

I have learned that Sophia Havran, one of our Lodge 183 charter members is in Arlington Community Hospital, Room 217, and she would like to hear from some of you members or if you cango by and see her. I understand she usedto livein Olney, Texas and would like to hear from some of her friends there.

Goodwill is the one and only asset that competition cannot undersell or destroy.

Remember, members that the second Sunday, March 1 O at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall is the regular meeting

and also that, on the 16th of March (that is Saturday, the 16th) is the next dance with music by COUNTRY BOYSOF ENNIS. It seemsthere was a wrong date on the calendars that were mailed out.

Lodge88 Birthday Club Report President Pearl Hanka opened our meeting with one of her usual inspirational readings entitled, '"Everyone Needs Someone". How true!

Treasurer Lillie Spies's financial report was very good, as usual. Lillie also reported that our Anniversary Day bake sale was successful and thanked Sisters Evelyn Mikolas, Flo Taake, Bessie Vasula, Esther Holton and Rita Alexander for helping her.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut reported sending get well cards to Albina Drawe, Shirley High, Dolores Condon and Clara Jecmenek.

President Pearl Hanka reported on the Rules & Regulations changes and alsoreported that all our sick members are much improved. That is good news! Pearl also thanked Anna Hoffman for donating the meat for our luncheonand Sam Scott for the ice cream.

Donald Steinman, Sr. had bodily injuries by falling during our icy weather conditio s, but hospitalization was not required.

Twenty - four members were present, and guest infant, Lea Frill.

New members made welcome were Sarah Wade, Sue It axter, Roberta Peters and Mary and Benny Pavey who have been guests for a long while.

The birthday members were Mollie Walker, Rosmary Gribble, uby Jones and Roy Alholm.

Members reported as being ill were Gertrude Johnston, Homer Johnston and Ruby Jones. We hope that their recovery will be soon.

Genevieve Earle donated a lovely hand - made tissue doll holder to be used as a sale item at a later date.

Josephine Bugaj, Genevieve Earle, Jo Prochaska and Agnes Reznicek were hostesses for the covered dish luncheon. Camille Bolcer and Montie North will be hostesses for the March 6th meeting.

Jo Prochaska expressed her pride in grandson Gerral Lane, son of Janie and Nolan Allen, who won the Spelling Bee at the Gillian Elementary School in Blue Mound. He earned a certificate and a large trophy. We extend to him our congratulations and much success in future Spelling Bee meets.

We express our sincere condolences to Mrs. Zdenka Skotak and family of Dallas on the loss of her husband, George Skotak age 85, who passed away February 4, 1985.

We extend our congratulations to three couples who were married Saturday, February 23rd; namely, Elizabeth Ann George, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sammie George, married to Frank J. Heiwig; to Sharon Elizabeth Jungman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jungman, married to Rey Louis; and to Adrienne Mary Burda, married to Patrick Joseph Nemec, son of Charles and Agnes (Seviek) Nemec of Bay City, Texas.

Roy and I were able to attend two of these weddings, but only sorry that we could not attend all three on the same day.

Roy and I, .with our friends and traveling companions of Dallas, Bessie and Phil Reames, will be touring Southern Europe. March 6th (meeting day) we will be in Switzerland: More details about our European tour at a later time.

Dallas Circle Of Czech Women Report It was on a sad note that we held our meeting Thursday, February 7th.

Many of us had just attended the funeral services of a dear friend, George Skotak. George (husband of Zdenka) will indeed be missed by all of us. His friendly face at our Krouzek meetings and his warm greetings will certainly leave a void. He rarely missed coming, with his wife, to our monthly meetings.

With twenty - three members present, President Zvolanek called the meeting to order. After the pledge to the flag, Ann asked for a moment of silence for George Skotak and for Alice Andrews (sister of Mary Kubacak).

Guests were introduced, namely: Alvin Elsik, Phil Reames, John Trojacek, Joe Vlk, Edmund Kaska,

Roy Alholm, Julius Podhrasky, Bob Zvolanek, Stanley Vrla, aild Arnold Vrla.

Bob Zvolanek thanked us for the "Get Well" card that was sent to him.

Ann Skrabanek expressed her thanks for our sympathy condolence for her departed brother.

Sunshine Chairman Adelle Vlk reported she mailed 15 Christmas cards to sisters in nursing homes and confined indoors. Seven "Get Well" and two "Sympathy" cards were also mailed. Gifts were taken to Mary Dusek, Agnes Janecka and Lillian Spain.

Mary Sebestik, in the absence of Bessie Kalich, reported birthday cards were sent to following sisters celebrating birthdays; namely, Martha Malooly, Rose Novak, Rose Waller, Mildred Bartek, Millie Noska, Mary Dusek, Irene Halouzka, Alice Roberts and Evelyn Trojacek.

President Zvolanek thanked the Telephone Committee for making all the important calls to members.

Under old business, we discussed plans for our 50th anniversary of Krouzek, to be held April 14, 1985. A committee was appointed to work on the printing of the programs. Helen Vrla, Jr. will be in charge of mailing the invitations to special guests. A committee will check with various local bakeries on cake prices. It was decided that finger sandwiches, cake, coffee and punch will be served that day. Decorating Committee will be in charge of table arrangement. Program Committee will contact those who will be asked to participate on our program. Final details will be ironed out at our March 7th meeting.

We were sorry to hear that Sister Vlasta Jurcik injured her ankle. As of this writing our Krouzek lost another dear member, Sister Fanny Schweizer.

Czech Heritage Festival The Czech Heritage Society. of South Texas presents for the first time a Czech Heritage Festival on Saturday, March 2, 1985 at the Corpus Christi Bayfront Plaza Exhibit Hall from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; expect to be entertained all day by Czech choral groups, folk dancers, Sokol gymnasts and two Czech bands playing polka and waltz music.

Everyone will have an opportunity to examine cultural displays and browse through booths offering Czech kolache, Czech music selections, Czech cookbooks and, much, much more.

In addition to the day's festivities, a "Parade of Costumes" precedes an evening of oldtime dance music until midnight; the admission will be $2.

Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: This is a follow - up of my previous letters in the Vestnik to remind our members, friends and our neighboring lodges from Ennis, Fort Worth, Dallas, Waco, Burleson and Elm Mott, that the softball team from Lodge 84 will present their "Czech Home Plate Review" Friday night, March 1 at 7 p.m.,at SPJST Lodge 84 on 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. The show is being presented to raise funds for new uniforms for the coming season.

The admisson is $6 for adults with FREE beer and popcorn; $3 for teens (14 - 18 year) with FREE cokes or popcorn. This is not a bad deal for your money, so make plans to come out for an evening of fun and pivo and also help the team pay for the new uniforms. Your presence and your support will be deeply appreciated.

The players are rehearsing now and hope to put on a good show, plus there will be country - western music which we feel will be enjoyed by everyone present for the show. Do come out Friday night, March 1, 1985. We are expecting a very large turnout of ex ballplayers and some will be in the skits.

March Meeting Suggestions After the business part of your meeting you may want to try some of the following activities. All activities are appropriate for all ages of youth.

You may want to have the older ones direct the games - activities, while you prepare the craft materials.

GAMES: Shamrock March Before starting to play the game, fasten about the room as many shamrocks, less one, as there are children to play. All players join hands and march around in a circle to music.

When the music stops, each child runs for a shamrock, clasping his hand over it. One player will be left out, he must drop out of the game which is again resumed. Players left out, stand aside and clap to the beat of the music. One shamrock is removed from the wall each time the music begins again. The winner is the one who clasps his hand over the last remaining shamrock.

(Players who are eliminated may begin their craft at that time, so you can give help individually.)

Bag of Gold Print "Bag of Gold" on a large paper bag or grocery bag. Place money or candy treats in the bag and tie it closed at the top with yarn or string.

Wrap heavy rope around the top of the bag and hang the bag from the ceiling or outside from a tree limb.

To play the game, blindfold each child, one at a time, and have him try to burst bag open with a broom or yardstick. Each child gets three swings to burst the bag. If he misses all three, another child gets a turn, and so on.

When someone finally breaks the bag, gather up all the treats and divide them among the children. (You may want to have all the young children try first and then raise the bag for the older children.)

CRAFTS: Wind Gauge Materials needed: 4 plastic foam cups, 2 plastic straws, fine, flexible wire(about 22 gauge) a nail, a wooden dowel or stick.

1) Cross two straws and wire them together at the center.

2) About 1 inch down from the rim of each cup, make a hole on each side.

The holes should be big enough for the straws to fit snugly.

3) Insert the straws through the holes in the cups. Put a dab of glue around the holes to hold the straws.

4) Insert a nail through the point where the two straws cross, and then hammer the nail into the top of the dowel. Set the dowel into the ground.

5) Add a strip of brightly colored tape around one of the cups.

As the cups spin around in one minute, count the number of times the striped cup makes a revolution in one minute. Do this several times during one day and write down your figures.

Figure out the average number of revolutions per day. (Have each child make a wind- gauge to take home. Each child can report back the next meeting his average readings per day. Compare results.

You can figure out a wind ratio using the number of revolutions of your foam cups and the average wind for a day as listed in the newspaper.

For example, if your cups spun 20 times in one minute, and the paper said the wind for the day was 10 miles per hour, you have a 2 to 1 ratio. That means if the cups spin 10 times in a minute, the wind is about 5 miles per hour. If your cups revolve 40 times, the wind is about 20 mph.

Taiton Youth Club Plans Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Lodge No. 30 Youth Club will hold its monthly meeting March 3rd, at the Taiton Community Center.

A contest will be held for the following age groups and themes: (6-9) -- to make a Shamrock (10-12) -- to make a leprechaun (13-17) -- to make a St. Patrick's Day scene At the March meeting, Mrs. Elmer Treumer and Mrs. Mary Ann Dluhos will serve refreshments.

For Body: Invert a cup for the body; glue or use brass fastener to attach another cup to inverted cup to make head. Cut slits for the eyes and ears.

For Features: Cut features from heavy paper, following the patterns shown. Color shaded areas of feature patterns black, using marker, crayon or paint. Insert ears and eyes into slits in the top of the head. Paint mouth and nostrils on face.

For Animals Coat: Leave each napkin folded in quarters, as it originally comes in the package. Tear the folded napkin into strips, 'A to 1/2' wide; then tear each strip apart at the fold. The strips will be about 6 inches long. Fold each strip in half to 3 inches long.

Cover the body first. Glue the folded end of the napkin strip to the body at the neckline, liltting it hang down loose over the body. For the lamb, the napkin strips are crumpled and then glued on for the close, curly effect of lamb's wool.

To cover the head and face, tear strips from 1/2 inch to 2 inches long. To make fur stand out from sides of face and behind eyes and ears, glue the fold of the strip at a right angle, as shown in Figure A. For areas in front of eyes, over the nose and around face, the fold is glued flat, as shown in Figure B. When the animal is completed, you can adjust the lengths of the fur by tearing off a bit of some of the strips to give your animal individuality!

(The lamb is recommended for children 6-8.) ANIMALS CAN BE USED AS PARTY DECORATIONS, FAVORS OR SIMPLE STICK PUPPETS.

News From Lodge Bryan Youth Club Dear Readers, Lodge 39 youth held their monthly meeting Sunday, February 10th. There were fifteen members present; we now have three new members so we would like to say welcome to them.

We decided that we would go skating February 24th. We also collected money to donate to the Bryan Public Schools to buy McGruff Puppets which will be used to teach children crime prevention. We also exchanged Valentines.

After the meeting we joined the mother lodge for a pot - luck supper.

Seaton Youth Club Activities ear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 47, Seaton had its meeting February 10, 1985. I brought a guest, my cousin, Tracy Klusacek. 1 hope she will be a new member soon.

We had a Valentine dinner Saturday night at Western Sizzlin'. We invited our parents, brothers and sisters.

At our meeting, we voted for a "Sweetheart" and Kim Craft is our Valentine Sweetheart. I am glad I voted for Kim. We had our District II Skating Party Sunday at Skate Haven. I took my 5 year - old brother, David, as my guest.

It sure was fun. I love to skate.

Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Plan Dance Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was held Wednesday, February 13, 1985 at 7:30 p.m.

President Christy Marek called the meeting to order.

Secretary Kim Schneider read the minutes and called the roll. We had 28 members present.

Treasurer Janet Macek gave the youth fund to us; in the fund we have $655.88.

Under unfinished business we discussed about the District II Skating Party, which was held February 17.

Lodge 24 had a very good attendance.

A discussion was held concerning a trip to Six Flags. We will be selling candy bars. We sold these candy bars last spring.

We were reminded that the District II spring meeting will be held March 17 at the Seaton (Star Hall) Lodge No. 47. A meal will be served after the meeting. Also under new business we will be having a dance March 15th.

This dance will be for grades 6th, 7th and 8th. The following people were assigned to get a list of class names and return them to the youth leader; 6th Grade -- Christy Marek, Kristie Waits, Melanie Zavodny; 7th Grade -- Janet Macek, and 8th Grade -- Kim Schneider. Brother Ganser, born May 20, 1917, in Detroit, Michigan was 67 years of age. He served in the U.S. Army in orld War II. e was married to Rose M. Holub tordovsky, June 22, 1946.

He was a letter carrier in Detroit, retired in 1974 and moved to Mart, Texas.

Brother Ganser was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waco.

Surviving him is his wife.

The family gathered at Rog ue 7, Waco, at the Ed Holub residence on Chapel Hill Road.

who passed away January 25, 1985, at Sundial Manors Nursing Home in Pilot Point, at the age of 85 years.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 3 p.m. Saturday in St. Thomas Catholic Church with Rev. Augustine Lucca, SDS, officiating. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Huff Funeral Home.

Sister Hejny was born in Ennis, Texas, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jaresh, and she married Charlie Hejny August 13, 1919, in Grayson County, Texas.

She was a charter member and financial secretary of SPJST Lodge No. 5, Tioga for more then 40 years and a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Survivors include her son, C.J. Hejny of Pilot Point; daughter, Helen Kubala of Fort Worth; brother, Ervin Jaresh of Tioga; five grandchildren and 3 great - grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Larry Kubala, Mike Watkins, Roger Kubala, Adolph Jaresh, Ed Faraizl and Terry Jaresh.

Rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m.

Friday at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 1 p.m. February 12 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waco with Monsignor Ed Rabroker as celebrant.

Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

who passed away February 15, 1985 at the Four Seasons Nursing Home in Ennis.

Sister Trojacek was born, August 8, 1903 in Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Leslie and Frances Gyzur Jarolimek. Sister Trojacek was preceded in 'death by her husband, Willie D. Trojacek in December 1952.

Olomouc, a city with a rich history and plenty of historical and architectural monuments, with more than 100,000 inhabitants at the present time, is one of the significant cultural and industrial centers of Czechoslovakia. It was proclaimed a historical urban reservation because of the great number of valuable historical and architectural monuments. More than 200 relics enjoy official protection. Thanks to its small picturesque medieval streets with many preserved secular and church palaces, monumental churches, burghers' houses and extensive parks, Olomouc is the frequent destination of tourists from Czechoslovakia and abroad.

The history of. Olomouc as a town goes back to the beginning of the 11th century (if we do not take into consideration primeval neolithic and then particularly Slav settlement), when the Premyslid family constituted the centers of the Moravian principality and - the Moravian bishopric was restored there. The period of the Middle Ages was very favorable for the town: it was built with such a creative power that it became a serious competitor of the capitol, Prague (Praha).

Numerous preserved relics are evidence of its one - time splendour.

Among the most interesting architectural monuments are the remains of the Roman Premyslid palace with several windows the artistic decoration of which is unique in Bohemia. As far as Gothic architecture is concerned, the most attractive buildings are St. Wenceslas Cathedral and St. Maurice's Church with the biggest organ in Central Europe. This magnificent instrument is used for concerts. Thanks to the University founded in the 1570s, the town' also became a significant center of education.

By the late Middle Ages the importance of Olomouc began to decline. Wars in the 17th century were disastrous for the town. In the middle of the 19th century, better times started in Olomouc, but this time it was only a buffer fortification.

Nevertheless, the baroque period left a lot of beautiful constructions there.

Today, Olomouc is still one of the most significant centers of Czechoslovakia. Mainly engineering (the production of Sigma irrigation equipment), food and building industries are represented there. On the four faculties of the University, the Medical Faculty has achieved a good reputation in Europe.

Olomouc is recorded in the minds of people not only as a town of historical value but also as a town of flowers thanks to the more than 25 - year long tradition of flower shows. When in the early 19th century the first parks were established, their founders could not know how important for the city the parks would be. Green now encircles the center of the town in a ring nearly four kilometres long. The area of the FLORA OLOMOUC statewide flower show with international participation covers 47 hectares of the Cech Park, Smetana Park and Bezruc Park, the so - called Royal Fortress and a rosery. At the same time the area is a botanical garden which includes enclosed and freely accessible parks, hot - houses, monothematic plant expositions and the examples of foreign garden architecture.

The unique park exteriors are composed of more than 15,000 decorative shrubs and about 3,500 trees of approximately 120 kinds in 500 species, cultivars and varieties. The whole of the area is situated 208 - 222 metres above sea level, in a warm slightly humid climate with mild winters. Average annual rainfall is about 600 milimetres .and the average temperature in the period of vegetation is 14.9 degree C. In the Smetana Park, there are some of the most remarkable exhibitions of the Botanic Gardens - the pinetum (an extensive collection of coniferous trees of many kinds and varieties from ~:::rope, Asia and North America, (the perenetum) a collection of perennial plants and a mognolia garden summer reading - room, a numerous collection of rhododendrons and outdoor azaleas and a natural exposition of spring grove flora. The gardens of important Czechoslovak gardening enterprises and the gardens of the nations with the samples of original flora, together with an extensive alpínum constructed on a terrace of the one - time fortification, the plants of which are mostly bulbous, tuberous and low perennial plants, offer, beside specialized information, a splendid aesthetic experience.

Twenty - five years ago, on the one time Terezian system of fortifications of the city a rose garden was founded.

The rosery extends over an area of 3.6 hectares a collection of nearly 15,000 shrubs and rose trees in nearly 400 varieties of both Czechoslovak and foreign growers from 14 countries.

Hot - houses attract the visitors' attention all year long by unique

collections of orchids, cactuses and suculents, bromeliads, water and marsh flora, lianas, tropical and subtropical trees. The botanical gardens have become a source of knowledge and inspiration thanks to the popular scientific character of the exhibitions,as wellas a quiet place for a stroll for the inhabitants of Olomouc.

FLORA OLOMOUC has become a world famous flower show. It participates significantly in th~ improvement of the environment, cont!,"!~utés to the advance of Czechoslovak decorative gardening, public gardening, landscape

gardening, growingand plant breeding methods.

Every second year, at the beginning of spring and in the middle of summer the most significant home gardening enterprises and the best European and overseas gardening firms come to Olomouc to present the results of their activity both to specialists and the public.

This year, the Olomouc exhibition of decorative gardening, garden architecture, arrangement of flowers and wreaths and garden machinery will be held for the 10th time (the spring term in April 27 to May 11, 1985; the summer stage in August 16 to 25, 1985).

The tradition of flower shows in Olomouc started in 1958 when a regional festival of cut flowers took place. The response of visitors was surprising, so in 1960 an exhibition of decorativegardeningwas organized on a statewidescale. When it was held for the 6th time, foreign participants also came. Since 1967, the exhibition has been organized under the name of FLORA OLOMOUC. It has already been visitedby nearly 7 million people.

The flower show is held in covered and outdoor exhibition areas. The dominating natural architectural formation of the Smetana Park - the center of the show - is the more than 700 - metre long alley bordered by a vertical wall of chesnut and lime trees more than a hundred years old. The pattern of flowers in the central strip of flowerbeds is reguarly changed.

During the spring show there are tens of thousands of Holland tulips. In summer tulips are replaced by non traditional kinds of annual plants.

This year, an uncommonly extensive planting of spring bulbous plants (narcissus, tulip, hyacinth) is being prepared for the fountain alley of the Smetana Park and the area along the sightseeingroute in the Bezruc Park.

A corridor betweenthe Smetana and Bezruc Parks will be new this year in the outdoor exhibition, where a demonstration arrangement of public area as a part of a pedestrians zone will be made making use of mobile elements. The exhibition of small garden machinery of Czechoslovak and foreign producers will also be interesting. · In the summer, the exhibition of sculptures named "Sculptural Balance '85" will be situated in the setting of perfect laws and places for a rest.

In seven pavilions covering 6,500 square metres, both in spring and summer, there will be a show of plants of top quality from Czechoslovak and foreign gardening firms.

Instructional exhibitions will also be prepared for the visitors: from Czechoslovak gardening education, tropical plants from Cuba, a joint exhibition of Czechoslovak botanical gardens.

All the prepared exhibitions, competitions, specialized and cultural programs cannot be mentioned here.

There is no other way but to invite all the lovers of fragile beauty of flowers to "FLORA OLOMOUCI"

weather conditions. Indications are that it will continue later than winters normally linger, not only in Texas but nationwide. The Texas Department of Health has warned Texans that the unusual, sustained periods of cold weather pose a threat of hypothermia to many who are unaware of the danger, chiefly the very young, the sick, and the elderly.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Robert Bernstein, explained that hypothermia, dangerously reduced body temperature, can lead to coma and death of the victim. "Particularly at risk, of course, are persons who must be outside for long periods in severe weather. But most people who routinely work in such conditions know the risks and dress accordingly.

Persons stranded in automobiles in bad weather, though, may not be prepared for the cold."

Dr. Bernsteinsaid travelers in severe weather should heed weather reports, dress in layered clothing, and possibly pack their cars with extra clothing or blankets. He advised them to make sure their cars are in dependable condition, and should they be stalled or forced off the road by the weather, not abandon. the warmth of their vehicles. Like outside workers, Dr. Bernstein said, travelers generally know these basics.

"It is the elderly, the very young, and persons who are ill who may become hypothermia victims without anyone suspecting danger before it is too late. Some become victims in relative comfort at home," Dr. Bernstein said.

The Health Department's Associate Commissioner for Personal Health Services, Dr. Clift Price, explained, "Many people don't realize what hypothermia is, or how a little drop in body temperature can bring it about."

Hypothermia occurs when the deep body temperature falls to 95 degrees, just less than four degrees below normal. At that · point, the victim exhibits mild lethargy, confusion, drowsiness which can progress to coma, a bloated face and a pinkish tint to the skin, trembling -- not shivering -- of one or more limbs, irregular heartbeat, slurred speech, shallow and slow breathing, and dropping blood pressure. ' ''These signs are easily mistakable for symptoms of other health problems." Dr. Price said. "With our current understanding of hypothermia, we suspect that many deaths in the past may have been attributed to a previous heart condition or stroke, when in fact the real cause was hypothermia. One of the keys to om; current understanding is that research shows perhaps 10 percent of all persons begin to lose one of their greatest protectivemechanisms against hypothermia at about age 65 -­ the reflex of shivering when body temperature drops."

Shivering is the body's mechanism for generating more heat when needed, and is also a signal to the individual's consciousness that more heat is needed. Dr. Bernstein added, ''The precautions we recommend are really common sense. Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Dress warmly and avoid alcohol and medications that can cause drowsiness or impair judgement when one must be exposed to the cold. Relatives and neighbors should frequently check on the wellbeingof elderly persons, especially those living alone. And children should be warmly dressed and limited to the amount of time they are given to play or walk to school in the cold."

"If one discovers a victim of hypothermia," be said, "call an ambulance, the fire department, or police immediately.Wraptbe victim in blankets or heavy clothing, and try to get the victim to drink warm liquids -­ not alcohol. DO NOT rub the victim's hands and other limbs to stimulate circulation, because this can cause damage to internal organs by pumping frigid blood deep within the body."

Accent On Health Influenza The Texas Department of Health has warned Texans that the flu season has arrived and will reach its peak within the next four to six weeks,according to the Commissioner of Health Dr.Robert Bernstein.

Filipino flu, or Influenza A (H3N2), has begun to spread throughout the United States and is expected to affect from 15 to 20 percent of the populace including about 1.5 to 3 million Texans.

Dr. Bernstein · said there is some consolation for those who suffered flu last year, since a second occurrence of the viral infection is usually milder than the first.

Symptoms of the the flu virus are fever, cough, nausea, and general body aches lasting for from three to five days. Dr. Bernstein said that persons with chronic heart or lung disease and those 65 and older should receive influenza vaccine to prevent severe illness. If a person in a high risk group has not received the vaccine, his or her physicianmay want to prescribe Amantadine as a preventive therapy.

He said that after one contracts the virus, treatment is the same as for a common cold. Dr. Bernstein advised parents to be cautious about giving their children aspirin or aspirin containing medications for fever, since a recent finding indicates a link between aspirin use in children with influenza or chickenpox and Reye syndrome, a rare but dangerous disease in young children.

Oddtl Dopisovatelů ·rak Všelicos Anežka Houdková V neděli 17. února se konala diamantová oslava neboť SP JST řád 84 .měl výročí založení spolku zde v Dallas. Mnoho se změnilo za těch 75 let a odešli mnozí na věčnost, kteří věrně pracovali pro zvelebení krajanského -ryolku SPJST. Počasí bylo dobré a r.ávštěva opravdu veliká, oběd který se podával též velmi dobrý a vše se povedlo. Po obědě pak začal program když pan Jerry Bartoš, Cyril Pokladník, a předseda Hlavní úřadov­ ny v Temple, Tx., -- (totiž pan Howard Leshikar) všichni měli kratší řeč o tom jak naše české spolky začaly a pak pokračovaly přes ty léta a jak můžeme býti hrdí na svůj puvod. Bylo to pěkné!

Pak pěvecký spolek z~e v Dallas moc hezky zazpíval pěkné nz-se české písně za assistence . p. Bob Lišky a s doprovodem "Czech Orchestra" p.

Pokladníka (musím zde ale říci, že napřed se zpívala naše národní hymna "Star Spangled Banner" a též "Kde Domov Můj" a teprve byl zpěv). Malé děti zpívaly české pisníčky a pak též tančiíy "Besedu" a že to bylo vše v krojích, tak se to krásně vyjímalo. Pak se dávaly spendlíky těm kteří byli členy SP JST u řadu 84 50 let a byli tito: paní Bessie Tardy, Leonard Jež (jeho špendlík přijala jeho sestra pi. Marta Taylor) též Jerry Fridrich. Pak tito nebyli přítomní aby si vzali špendlík: Frank J. Malík, Louis Prašífka, Woodrow W. '.:;voboda, a Joe Válčík, Jr. Snad mám to vše správně, nechtěla bych někoho vynechat.

Pak dávali uznání těm kteří měli zásluhu o tu slavnost. Já moc dobře uz neslyším ale vím že pí. Bessie Petrová dostala uznání za svou práci s dětmi toho spolku. Kdo byl víc to nevim, a prosím o prominutí. "Bratrem roku" byl uznán C.J. Olson a "Sestra roku" byla sl. Cherri Petrová. Všem srdečně gratulujeme a přejeme vše dobré nadále. Bylo vše moc hezké, a pěkně jsme se bavili a sešli se s přátely které jsme dávno neviděli. Musím ještě sdělit, jak jsem byla překvapená a potěšená se setkat s dcerami, zetěm a vnučkou zesnulé mé dobré přítelkyně pí. Kopecké=to byli pi. Bessie Tardyová, manželé Jerry Steelyovi a malá tříletá Meredith Woodard. Rada jsem je viděla a ta malá holčička pak vyhrála ten diamantový drahokam čili závěšek, Jistě jsme jí to přáli a nechť ve zdraví kdysi ho užije. Je to vnučka manželů Steely.

V neděli měl operaci v Kentucky nemocnici na umělé srdce pan Haydon a dnes ráno oznamovali, že vše se dobře povedlo a operace trvala prý jen 3 a půl hodiny a že dnes mu asi dají něco k jídlu. Byl by to velký pokrok kdyby tyto operace se časem ještě lépe vydařily. Jeho rodina je velmi šťastná ~e Hik má dobře a snad se vše zlepší ještě více během ča~m.

Bylo nám sděleno, že 9 různých měst v našem Texasu se snaží získat právo postavil továrnu GM kde by se

vyráběly auta značky "Saturn". Toto by bylo moc dobré pro to šťastné mesto, neboť prý 6 tisíc dělníku by mělo práci a přínéslo by to za 500 milionu dolarů výdělku. Ještě se to nerozhodlo kdo bude to šťastné město a náš Dallas by to také rád dostal. Tak musíme čekat jak to bude.

V neděli 17 února zde v Dallasu oslavovali asi 6 tisíc lidí (kteří sem přišli z Vietnamu) jejich Nový rok.

Oslava se konala ve Fair Parku a bylo vidět, že opravdu tam bylo velmi mnoho lidí ti chtí aby jejich děti věděly něco ._ .radicích a zvyků v jejich rodné zemi daleko od naší země.

Byla mě sdělená smutná zpráva, že minulého týdne zesnula dobrá moje přítelkyně pí. Františka Schweizerová, která bydlela už dosti dlouho v Opatrovně a nebyla dosti zdravá poslední dobou. Pocházela z Cech a slyšela jsem, že přijela před lety .. s rodinou Anton Pavelkovou a pak se provdala za bratra pí. Emmy Pavelkové, která též byla mou dobrou přítelkyni a pocházela ze Švýcar a uměla dobře česky. Postrádám obě milé krajanky a preji jim klidny spánek na věčnosti. Tak se nám pořád ztrácejí naší krajané a už je neuvidíme=škodá.

Poslední dobou sem přichází mnoho lidí z Japonska a hledí zde navázat ob­ chodní styky, a poslední týden přijelo 10 obchodníků z Japonska a chtí si udělat nějaké obchody a navázat přátelství. Už někteří mají prý udělané příští schůzky a chtí postavit továrny zde. Těší se, že, obchody s Dallasem budou jim velmi prospěšné též pro obě strany-což by bylo také dobře, že ano?

Ve středu minulého týdne v Austinu, Tx., šla 7. letá dívčina se svým psem po ulici a najednou zastavilo auto a člověk skočil k dívce a začal jí tahat (asi jí chtěl unésti) ale její pes "poodle" chňapl mu po ruce a darebák musel ji pustit. Policista pan Jašek řekl, že nebýti toho ochránce, že jistě by byl dívku unésl a kdoví co se s ní mohlo stát. Tak nechť rodiče střeží své děti dobře i když jsou za plotem navenku.

Teď je toho moc a je to strašné co se všude děje!

Také minulý týden jistý člověk Jeremy Levin (asi židovské národnosti) který byl už 11 měsíců zatčen a držen jako vězeň v Beirutu, konečně si nějak odtrhl řetež s kterým byl přidělán ke stěně, a utékl pryč a utíkal pořád až našel muže v Syrii · a . ti ho dodali úřadům americkým a už se konečně sešel se svou manšelkou po delší době.

Ovšem, on jaksi má starost o ty čtyři druhé vězni které sice neviděl ale ví, že jsou tam, Oni ti vězni byli prý všichni přidélaní řetězem ke stěně a když někdo chtěl jít do záchodu tak musel tlouci na dveře a on řekl, že vždy slyšel čtyřikrát klepat přes den. Má starost jestli to jsou Američané aby skrze jeho útek nebyli pak týráni a bití. Tak pořád se něco děje a člověk si pak myslí, kdoví jak to bude dále-jestli lépe či hůře?

Zdejší člověk židovské národnosti který je členem městské rady a který je dosti oblíben se rozhodl, že se bude ucházet o úřad mayora. Onen žid vlastní želežářský obchod a známe ho že je dobrý člověk a tak nevíme jak pochodí proti nynějšímu mayoru Taylorovi, ale pan Goldblatt si troufá,

že zvítězí. Goldblatt se nebojí Mexikanů ani Cernochl.i a leccos chce zlepšit v našem městě, tak asi musíme čekat až jak to dopadne. Také doposud židovské rabinecké středisko nedovolovalo aby ženy se mohly státi "rabínem" a působit v jejich kostele, ale nyní dallaská žena Nina Feinsteinová je zapsaná v židovské teologické semináři v Novém Yorku a až dokončí studie v 1986 tak pak bude moci úřadovat jako její můž, který je též rabínem zde v Dallasu. Tak ti přísní rabíni muší konečně ustoupit ženám, když jsou jejich víry. Vše se časem mění, že ano?

Ta malé děvčátko zde Stormie Jonesová, která akorát loni na sv.

Valentňa se podrobila vážné operaci v Pittsburgu kde jí bylo dáno nové srdce a játra a letos oslavovala to všechno lepší neboť její matka se vdala na ten samý den. Moc o tom psali a povídali otom v novínach i na televizi a děvčátko opravdu moc hezky vyhlíží.

Měla pěkné růžové krajkové šaty, punčošky k tomu a bílé střevíce a ovšem, reportéři za ní chodili a vyptávali se jí leccos a též fotografovali a pak už byla celá unavená z toho, ale ona a rodiče (matka a nevlastní otec) měli radosst, že se tak dobře cítí a jen si přejí, aby to trvalo a ona byla zdravá, Muzí děvčátko držet dietu, užívat některé léky a jednou týdně jíti k lékařům na prohlídku. Jistě jí to pře­ jeme, neboť zdraví je nadevše-není to pravda?

Ten starší člověk Schroeder v nemocnici v Kentucky se také poz­ dravuje a těší se, že za čas půjde už domu ke své rodině. Nyní druhý člověk má jíti na operaci neboť jeho stav je velmi špatný a bez operace by nebyl moc dlouho živ. Tak i jemu přejeme aby šťastně operaci přežil a byl zas zdráv. Je trochu starší než p. Schroeder (má 58 let) ale doufejme, že i jemu konečňe vše bude zdravé a bude se cítit dobře.

Zítra v neděli prý budou pátrat a hledat zase to 5. Jeté děvčátko které zmizelo v Mesquite, Tx. a ač už čtyřikrát hledali jí, tak dosud nic nenašli. Toto už bude pětkráte co jí budou hledat a nevím, jestli jí najdou.

Já myslím, že buď je mrtvá anebo jí někdo odvézt a prodal někomu. Též dvouletý malý chlapec zmizel v Lewisville, Tx., a také ho ještě nenašli a kdoví kde ten je. Nyní už noviny psalý, že loni moc dětí se ztratilo a někdy že až 50 tisíc dětí zmizí za rok.

Druzí zas říkají, že tolik prý jich někdy není, že prý děti utečou z domova, někteří jdou pryč když rodiče jsou rozvedení a chtí být s obouma rodiči a když to nejde, tak jdou pryč. Ale je také dost případu, že někteří též kradou děti a dobře tyto prodají. To je ale všechno smutné pro rodiče, že pak už děti nikdy neuvidí a nevědí co se s nimi stalo!

Minulý týden na toho Valentina se prý prodalo velice mnoho čokoladových cukrovinek (prý asi za 400 milionů dolaru po celém světě.)

Mluvíme ale jen o čokoládový~h a lidi jsou nyní prý tak už zmlsaní, že chtí jen ty nejlepší. Jedna firma prý ve Ft. Worth, Tx., vyrábí velmi dobré a chutné cukrovinky čokoládové a ty se prodávají daleko, a 5 tun týdně projde

přes továrnu tam. Mnoho těch velkých obchodů jako Neiman-Marcus, Sakowitz a jiné stále kupují více a více aby měli pro své kupující i když je cukroví drahé, tak se stejně dobře prodá.

Plaza hotel zde v Dallas, který působil prý 60 let bude zavřen a pak předělán aby byl pěkný a elegantní dole ve městě a/bude míti vše nejnovější pohodlí. Bude to stát peníze ale majitelé doufají, že se to nakonec vyplatí. · Musím už ukončit ale ještě musím říci, že jsem byla ráda, že na tu oslavu u řádu 84 přijeli manželé Rudy Šefčíkovi a že nás pak navštívili v domě a moc pěkně jsme se pobavili a doufáme, že zas někdy přijedou k nám.

Tomáš Pešina z Čechorodu (1629-1680) Letos, začátkem února, uplynulo 305 let od úmrtí pobělohorského vlastence Tomaše Pešiny, spolupracovníka Bohuslava Balbína a významného historika Moravy.

Tomáš Pešina z Čechcrodu se narodil během třicetileté války 19 pro­ since 1629 v Počátkách, kde jeho otec byl řezníkem. Středoškolská studia absolvoval na jezuitském gymnásiu v historickém Jindřichově Hradci v jihovýchodních Čechéch, filosofii a bohosloví studoval pak od roku 1648 (rok konce třicetileté války) v Praze.

Tu zásluhou Bohuslava Balbína se začal věnovat dějepisu.Tomáš Pešina žil ve velmi tragickém úseku dějin českého národa. Tento významný vlastenec se narodil 9 let po nešťastné bitvě v listopadu 1620 na Bílé Hoře a dovršil 19 let v roce 1648, kdy poslední naděje na obnovu české samostatnosti se rozplynuly vestfálským mírem jak mýdlové bubliny na slunci. 30 letá válka, jež vznikla a skončila v naší staré vlasti, se změnila z původních náboženských problémů ve válku politických zájmů. Habsburci usilovali o panovnický absolutismus, švédské království (hlavní představitel pro­ testantů) usilovalo o rozšíření svého území. K těmto politickým zájmům se brzy přidružilo též soupeřství Habsburku s francouzskými Bour­ nony, kde jedna strana se obávala -ozpínavosti druhé strany na nezinárodním kolbišti Evropy.

Katoličtí Bourboni se stali spojenci orotestantů a na druhé straně pro­ testantský kurfiřt Saska, Jan Jiří, byl vlastně téměř od začátku 30 leté války spojenec Habsburků, jelikož česká protestantská šlechta v čele s Matyášem Thurnem si místo něho vybrala za českého krále Fridricha Falckého. Horní a Dolní Lužice, historické země české koruny, byly pak odtrženy od českého království a "uděleny" Habsburky Janu Jiřímu za jeho zradu svých souvěrců v Čechách.
