President Albert Kubala of Lodge 92 in Fort Worth, presented Madonna Wilke [center] chairman of the Board for the Tarrant County Child Welfare Board and Gay Lamond [far right] chairman of "Kash for Kids" Tarrant County, with a check in December from Lodge No. 92. This is a very worthwhile charity which the members of Lodge 92 support in good spirit. The problem of child abuse is a tragedy and maybe through our help these abused children will have a future free from torment. The members of Lodge No. 92 wish to do more for this charity during 1985. A benefit dance has been scheduled for Sunday, April 21 from 3 to 7 p.m. The Country Boys Polka Band of Ennis will play. The kitchen will be open by the Youth Club and all monies raised will go to "Kash for Kids." There will be a cake walk and sales; all proceeds to go for "Kash for Kids." The lodge members are excited and enthusiastic about this event and hope the dance will encourage members from other lodges to participate by joining us on this "Sunny Spring Sunday." -- Sherrie Kubala Watkins. Lodge 107 Donates To Fire Department Bob Bayer [left] presents check to Assistant Fire Chief Marvin Roemer of the Floresville Volunteer Fire Dept. This is the second consecutive year that Lodge 107 has given $500. The Fire Department is purchasing a new truck. Lodge 107 President Bob Bayer has played a big part in getting other clubs and individuals to donate to this worthy cause.

How well does he or she get along with school employees, students and parents?

Is there a nurse on duty? Have emergency procedures been established and practiced? ***

By the time these lines are read, the 22 - cent postage stamp will be in effect -another raise in our first - class postage rate, however, your editor understands that the second - class (our Vestnik) rate will also go up.

This editor is once more asking all of our writing contributors, lodge correspondents, reporters, etc. to write early so that we receive our mail by Thursday morning HERE IN WEST! The following is what we are faced with. Your editor has somewhat mixed feelings about all these "so - called" NEEDED increases; for instance, here is an example -- for the last 16 years this editor has had this position (since January 1, 1969) Sister Agnes (Anezka) Houdek has faithfully mailed her letter in Dallas Tuesday afternoon and more years before and we received it the following day (Wednesday) BUT the first week of February she, again, mailed it Tuesday, February 5th and it was postmarked "February 5th" in Dallas and we FINALLY received it Friday, February 8th and had to rush it to the printer (personally) that day to get it into print. It had NOT been missent anywhere [no other postmark]; it was just sitting around until someone got the idea that it was FIRST - CLASS and should be delivered. When you call the Post Office in Dallas and Waco all you get is the "bureaucratic runaround."

If you are one of the millions of Americans moving to a new community this year, the success of your relocation may depend upon finding good schools for your children. But how do you judge a school's quality?

How many students are in a class -more than 25? How many students is each teacher expected to instruct in the course of each day? Is there time for individualized instruction or assistance? Are teachers' aides available to provide additional help?

Is there a textbook in every subject or class for each student? How old are the texts? Do the books present male exclude sterotypes, female or minorities or promote age discrimination? Are supplies and equipment adequate? Are modern teaching aids -- such as computers and laboratory equipment -- available to students?

Is there a library that is open every day? Does it have a trained librarian to assist students and at least 20 books per pupil, plus magazines and periodicals? Does the school offer art, music and physical - education programs taught by expert instructors?

Are there school counselors or a phychologist?

Are high standards set for student behavior and academic performance?

Do school administrators, employees and parents work together to help students meet these standards?

Does the principal visit classes and become acquainted with students?

Social Security recipients who paid too little in quarterly estimated taxes in 1984 are getting a break from the Internal Revenue Service this year.

They won't be assessed penalties on, the taxes they owe as a result of a 1984 change in the tax status of Social Security benefits. Although many recipients didn't realize it, up to half of benefits became taxable for individuals with a total income of $25,000 or above $32,000 for couples filing jointly. Income from municipal bonds must be included in figuring total income. ***

Many adults unprotected. Many adults could extend their lives merely by getting the same kinds of shots now given routinely to schoolchildren, according to the American College of Physicians. Safe and effective vaccines are available for seven diseases that can strike adults--tetanus, diphtheria, measles, rubella, hepatitis B, influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia. Yet many adults are not protected. Result: Just two of these diseases, influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia, kill 25,000 Americans, every year. *** If you must drive in extreme winter weather such as that which disrupted the United States President's inauguration, the National Weather Service recommends taking along an emergency kit to use in case of trouble.

Include: Blankets or sleeping bags, flashlight, shovel, booster cables, flares, bags of sand or gravel for traction, nonperishable food and extra winter clothing.

People who would prefer not to get calls from telephone - sales operations now can ask the Direct Marketing Association to remove their names from national telephone - marketing lists. The new program is patterned after a similar service that permits consumers to have their names removed from mailing lists. It can reduce calls from national advertisers but isn't likely to affect those from local businesses. Write to: Telephone Preference Service, Direct Marketing Association, 6 East 43rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10017. *** No lotion, cream or other product now available without prescription will grow hair or prevent baldness, the Food and Drug Administration has concluded. The FDA has proposed that such products be banned from the marketplace. Most baldness is inherited, an expert advisory panel told the agency. Hair loss also can be caused by malnutrition, iron deficiency, hormone imbalance or exposure to radiation. Because sudden, excessive or an unusual pattern of hair loss may have an underlying medical cause, anyone having such a problem should consult a doctor promptly. ***

Excerpts From The Minutes Of The First Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held January 8-10, 1985 At The Home Office In Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order on January 8, 1985 at 11:45 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present.

The minutes of the October 9 and 10, 1984 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and two corrections were proposed after which a motion was adopted to accept the minutes as corrected.

ELECTION OF PRESIDING OFFICERS President Leshikar presided during the annual election of the Supreme Lodge board chairman.

Director Pokladnik was nominated for the position of chairman of the board and elected by acclamation.

Director Broz was nominated for the position of vice - chairman of the board and elected by acclamation.

DIRECTORS' AUDIT Report was made on the audit of the directors. Director Broz reported on the audit of vouchers and expenses.

Director Vitek reported that the securities in the Safety deposit box were all accounted for. Report was made that the books were found to be

in order. After discussion, the directors' oral and written audit report was approved. The written report of the directors will be placed of record.

Chairman Pokladnik welcomed incoming directors, Willie E. Kohutek and Jerry Prochazka.

Past President Nick A. Morris had been invited by the Supreme Lodge for a presentation. He was welcomed and presented with a large framed personal portrait as a token of appreciation for his years of service in the Home Office. He responded to the presentation and wished the Supreme Lodge well.

Recess for lunch was taken.

REPORTS The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged on motion duly adopted. The reports will be placed of record.

OLD BUSINESS STATUE OF LIBERTY PROJECT - Consideration was given to the restoration of Ellis Island project.

After discussion, it was agreed that the Supreme Lodge encourage and solicit contributions from lodges for the project and match contributions of up to a total of $2,500. It was agreed that a minimum total contribution of $2,500 would be guaranteed by the Supreme Lodge and President Leshikar would be authorized to promote and publicize the effort and devise the method of fund-raising.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR - The hiring of Sue Meadows to fill the position of SYD was ratified on motion duly passed.

MINUTES OF SUPREME LODGE DFFICERS' MEETINGS - The minutes of six Supreme Lodge officers' meetings concerning investments were accepted and approved.

FOURTH QUARTER INVESTMENTS - The investments as listed in Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska's report were ratified on motion duly passed.

LOCAL LODGE LIABILITY INSURANCE - Report was heard on extensive efforts to formulate a package liability insurance plan for SPJST lodges and a discussion of the problems ensued. It was agreed to continue efforts to encourage local lodges to obtain adequate liability coverage locally. It was agreed that the Supreme Lodge directors would join in the effort to communicate with lodges on the matter and that a letter be mailed to local lodges or placed in the Vestnik.

GENEALOGY PROPOSAL - A suggestion was considered proposing that the SPJST gather data from our old membership files for use by family historians, etc. After discussion, the matter was tabled.

NEW BUSINESS XXV SPJST Convention - The date of the next regular convention of the SPJST was set for June 19-23, 1988 at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic Center in Temple, Texas.

YOUTH RULES - Recommended changes in the youth royalty rules were discussed and approved.

A recommended change in the pictorial arts area was also approved.

A motion was adopted to provide an advance of 80 percent of the youth fund allocation to the districts as in the past.

It was decided to continue to award $5 per participant at the SYAD. Authorization was granted to send two participants per district to the Longhorn Recreational Lab. The SYD would also attend.

Recess for the day was taken at 5 p.m. until 8:30 a.m., January 9, 1985.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEES - - The following committee appointments were fact finding as recommended committees: Products Committee Bernard Gebala Willie E. Kohutek Stanley Broz Jerry Mikulas, Jr. Fraternal Activities Committee Howard B. Leshikar Sidney Kacir Ben Trcalek Thelma Hrncir Financial Planning Committee Leonard D. Mikeska Jerry Prochazka Cyrill Pokladnik Matt S. Vanek a motion After discussion, approving the committee appointments was passed. It was understood that the committees would replace the corporate planning committee, the history committee and the Czech language allocations committee. The term of the appointments was set for one year except for the Supreme Lodge officers who would serve as permanent members.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - A petition was reviewed requesting changes in the scholarship program.

After due consideration, a motion was adopted to leave the scholarship program unchanged.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES There was a lengthy discussion of Society goals and objectives for the future. Some of the problems of planning orderly growth and progress for the Society were explained. The need for corporate planning and communicating needed changes to our membership were discussed.

Recess for lunch was taken.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR Carol Sue Meadows, the newlyappointed state youth director, was

introduced to the Supreme Lodge.

REFUND TO LODGES - The refund to lodges under group bill was previously set at 8 percent and direct bill lodges at 2 percent for 1985.

Proposals were heard to also set the same 8 percent refund rate to those lodges opting for direct bill.

After due deliberation a motion was adopted to set the refund to lodges opting for direct bill at 8 percent, the same rate approved for group bill lodges.

SPJST LODGE LOANS - Two officials of a lodge had requested opportunity to appear before the Board and were invited into the Board meeting. Speaking in behalf of the membership of the lodge, they discussed the financial problems caused by the high interest rate on the lodge building loan and high operating expenses. They requested relief by requesting a reduction in the interest rate on the lodge building loan.

After discussion, it was decided that any SPJST lodge having an SPJST mortgage with an interest rate of over 11 percent, that such lodge be given the option of modifying the interest rate to 11 percent. It was understood that the 1 percent credit on principal provision stipulated in our investment policy be afforded to all lodges with the 11 percent interest rate. The provision required that (1) all payments and mortgage obligations are current, (2) certificate count of the lodge has increased by 50 new certificates during the 12 months preceding the loan anniversary date.

AREA MANAGERS CONCEPT It was agreed that the vice president continue the use of the two area managers on a trial basis.

UNIVERSAL LIFE - After due deliberation, it was agreed to proceed with the development of a Universal Life certificate and proceed with its marketing as soon as feasible. The Board was made aware that this will be a costly product to develop, but that it is necessary.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES - It was agreed that the products committee be charged with the task of setting a goal for growth of the Society and also to come up with other goals and objectives and recommended actions needed to achieve such goals and objectives. Report would be heard duing the April Supreme Lodge meeting.

ADVERTISING - After due deliberation, it was agreed that the Society would pay one - half of the cost of radio spot ads on an equal share basis with SPJST sales representatives.

PAIDUP ADDITIONS - A motion was adopted, authorizing the mailing of the premium refund from the Home Office direct to each member. After 1985 paidup additions will be received instead of cash refunds unless the member requests a cash refund.

NEW EQUIPMENT - By common consent, the Supreme Lodge officers were authorized to purchase and decide on the selection of an inserter stuffer . It was also agreed that due to added travel obligations, to purchase additional automobiles for Society use.

CONSULTANTS - It was reported that a retired I.R.S. field representative would be available to assist the Home Office on an as needed basis in various specialized areas. It was agreed by common consent to authorize the use of the individual on an as - needed basis.

SALES INCENTIVE TRIP - The sum of $25,000 was allocated for a sales incentive trip based on 1985

4/VESTNfK—Wednesday, February 20, 1985 production. The top 30 sales representatives with a minimum of $3,000 annualized premium would be eligible.

DELINQUENT LOANS - The recommendations on delinquent loans were considered and approved on motion duly passed.

A lengthy discussion of a delinquent loan to an SPJST Lodge covered various problems and options. It was decided to postpone action on the matter until the April Supreme Lodge meeting.

Recess for the day was taken at 7 p.m. until 9 a.m. January 10, 1985.

LOAN APPLICATIONS ANNUITY INTEREST RATE - The matters of the mortgage interest rates, a loan allocation and the annuity interest rate were considered. A motion was adopted to: (1) Set the mortgage loan rate to members at 121/2 percent. (2) Consider acceptable loan applications from all areas of Texas without regard to any district allocation with the understanding, that the Supreme Lodge officers have the authority to discontinue accepting mortgage applications if too many are received. (3) Set the Annuity interest rate at 111/2 percent for the period from January 31, 1985 through April 30, 1985.

Consideration was given to the Supreme Lodge policy on surveys and certified plats in connection with mortgage loan applications. After discussion, it was decided to require a plat certified by a registered surveyor on all loan applications received hereafter.

UNPAID CLAIMS - The sum of $250 due under an unpaid claim was designated to the DHR child abuse program, a charitable use.

ANNUITY SETTLEMENT OPTIONS - After dicussion, it was agreed that the single premium immediate annuity would be an acceptable settlement option for a flexible premium or deferred annuity.

RAMP FOR HANDICAPPED - It was decided on motion duly adopted to proceed with plans for construction of a ramp for the Home Office, An architect would be retained to prepare plans and specification for approval by the Supreme Lodge by mail poll. The job would be submitted for bids and action would be taken during the Supreme Lodge meeting in April if bids can be ready by that date.

PREMIUM REFUND SCALE The following scale was adopted, effective January 1, 1985: 3 percent of . the current certificate year mid terminal reserve on permanent plans only, less $0.35 per premium - paying certificate and less $1.60 per paid-up certificate. If the resulting refund is not at least $2.25, then no refund is to be paid.

SPJST LODGE NO. 85 - Report was made that no one could be found to handle the affairs of the Munday Lodge. After discussion, it was agreed to transfer the Lodge No. 85 members to Lodge No. 73.

Recess for lunch was taken.

LODGE MATTERS - The proposed long - term leasing of a lodge property to the West Sokol unit was reported.

The consensus of the Supreme Lodge was to discourage any long - term lease by any lodge.

Report was made on a matter involving the need for a correction deed in connection with a lodge property and actions were proposed to correct the situation.

SPJST LODGE NO. 84 - Invitation was extended to the lodge's 75th anniversary celebration to be held February 17th in Dallas, Texas.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set for April 9th and 10th. the R & D committees appointed at this SL meeting would be asked to meet at the Home Office on April 8th at 3 p.m.

The July Supreme Lodge meeting was set for July 8-10, 1985.

There being no further business, Chairman Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 2:20 p.m.

Frances Wotipka Honored Dear Members: We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Frances Wotipka became the 70th SPJST Member to outlive the actuarial table of her life insurance policy. She was recently honored with a social ceremony and birthday party hosted by SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell. District I Director Ben Trcaiek presented her with a lifetime membership certificate and the cash proceeds for her policy. The SPJST salutes and congratulates Sister Wotipka on her 96th birthday and we wish her well.

Fraternally, Leonard D. Mikeska Secretary - Treasurer *** SPJST Lodge No. 186 The second Sunday in January SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, hosted a 96 - year birthday party for Mrs. Frances Hajtemanek Lesikar Wotipka. It was held in the Leisure Lodge Nursing Home where she now resides.

Mrs. Wotipka was born in Lee County near Dime Box, January 8, 1889. She later moved to Burleson County when she was 16 years old. At age 19 she married Joe Lesikar. There were four children born to this union: Lydia Kristof of Caldwell, George Lesikar of California, Edward Lesikar (deceased 1967), and Joe Lesikar (deceased 1984). Mr. Lesikar preceded her in death in June 1939. December 20, 1951, Mrs. Wotipka married Frank J. Wotipka.

In October 1946, Mrs. Wotipka moved from Deanville to Caldwell.

Then, in April 1982, she took residence at Leisure Lodge. Mrs. Wotipka is very agile and alert at 96 years and throughly enjoyed her birthday party.

She walks with some assistance and loves her family of two living children, 14 grandchildren, 31 great - grandchildren and 4 great - great - grandchildren.

It is a real joy to see someone attain this age and still enjoy life and we are proud that she is a member of SPJST since 1916 which makes her a member for 69 years.

Meeting At Pasadena Dear Members: We hope you are planning to attend our district meeting on March 10th at Lodge No. 172, 3609 Preston,

Registration starts at 11 a.m. A barbecued beef dinner will be served from 11:30 to 1:30. Free refreshments will be served at noon. Lodge No.88 Czech Concert Orchestra, directed by Rudy Dybala, and the Choral Club, directed by Tim Kostom, will perform at noon, and you will enjoy their beautiful songs and music.

All you good cooks, the lodge will surely appreciate pastry donations.

The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m.

There will be a memorial service for our departed members, an interesting youth program, and recognition of 50 year members. We will elect officers for 1985.

Nine door prizes (seven $5 bills, a bottle of liquor, and -a pot plant) will be given. You must be present to win.

The popular "Texas rew" will play good music for the dance following the meeting.

Come and join other members on this day of fellowship. The officers and members of Lodge No. 172 are looking forward to seeing you, and so are we district officers. This is one way you can show you are active in our great organization.

A motion was made and carried that the next District VII meeting be held in the north section of the district, the last Sunday in April at. Lodge No. 185 or Lodge No. 133; date and place to be decided later.

Sister Maxine Pavliska, DYC, in her report, stated that the year was good; good camp at Camp Lone Star and District VII outing at H.E.B. Camp in Leakey. State King Joe Landin and State Queen Stacia Engel were introduced.

SL President Brother Howard Leshikar said that State YAD craft and talent will be combined with State Royalty as it was this year. Everyone agreed that it would be easier and save traveling expenses to combine these two activities.

The Nominating Committee was ppointed consisting of Monta Foster, chairman; Brother D. Netek and Brother Bob ayer.

Sisters Tillie Valchar, Kathryn Marek and Gladys Jasek were appointed to audit the Youth Club books at District VII meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 1:45 which was followed by games enjoyed by all.

Minutes-District VII Fall Meeting The District VII fall meeting was held in Floresville on the farm of Brother and Sister William Pavliska, September 23, 1984. This was an ideal place to hold a meeting; it was on the river and under beautiful pecan trees.

The noon meal consisted of stew furnished by Lodge No. 107, plus salads, vegetables and desserts were brought by members.

The meeting was called to order by District VII President Emil Matula at 1:20 p.m.

Lodge 107 President Bob Bayer welcomed all members and guests.

Brother Matula thanked Lodge 107 for hosting this meeting.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed in memory of District VII deceased members.

A correction was made and read that the scholarship recipients should have been listed by their first names and they were: Sandra House and Jeffrey Sralla. This was suggested by Sister Hrncir. The other recipients were Doug Jasek and Frances F. McDonald and were correctly mentioned in the minutes. The minutes of the spring meeting were not read at this meeting but the secretary was to have them in the Vestnik at the earlist date.

District VII Director, Sister Hrncir, reported that the Supreme Lodge is adjusting to transition. Members should take advantage of the IRAs; now the IRA is 12 percent to end of October. She also mentioned that District VII has both the State King and State Queen and both are members of Lodge No. 117, Robstown and are members of the youth club.

Past convention chairman, Brother Monta Foster of Lodge No. 79, did a wonderful job in hosting the convention.

Brother Dominic Netek invited all to the Dance and Song Festival which will be held in San Antonio, proceeds to be for Child Abuse.

Lodge 32, Victoria Elects Officers And Trustees The SPJST Lodge 32 held their monthly meeting February 6, 1985 at the Citizens National Bank. The Lodge 32 officers for 1985 are: President -Ella Arnold, Vice President -- Franklin Elles, Financial Secretary -- Katherine Wokaty, Treasurer -- Evelyn Horelka, Secretary -- Frank A. HuVar. The trustees elected are Julius Koutny, John Motal and Mike Ahlostrom. The youth leaders are Francis Motal and Stepheny Spears.

Ella Arnold assumed the chairpersonship for this year's Czech Fest which is to be held June 29, 1985 at the Victoria Community Center.

Lodge members present at this meeting have decided to do more charitable work in the community. All SPJST members are urged to attend the monthly meetings and participate in all lodge activities.

The next meeting will be held March 6, 1985 at the Citizens National Bank.

February Meeting The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge:No. 6, Cottonwood was held Sunday, February 3, 1985 at 3 p.m.

Lynette Hykel and Tammi Dobecka led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lynette then led the SPJST Pledge. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence for our dear departed Brother Daryl Helona.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. All other reports were in order.

Sister Willie Mae Schutz reported the youth will take cakes to the West Rest Haven, Wednesday, February 6th. The youth will take Valentines to the rest home February 13th. A Valentine Party will be held Friday, February 15th. Hot dogs and drinks will be furnished and each family is asked to bring chips or sweets. The youth club donated to six different organizations. The youth will have a kite - flying contest at their next meeting.

155 50th Anniversary March 3 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: The February meeting of Lodge No. 47 Seaton was held one week late because of the beautiful snow we had.

The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Pechal at 2 p.m.

Sunday, February 10, 1985.

Flagbearers Mike Wilson and Daryl Kortis led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased Sister Hedi Rose Mikulas Lines. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Visitors welcomed to our meeting were Ann Balusek, Lillie Hejl and George Leza. Come back again, soon! Reported on the sick list were Millie Lesikar, Lawrence Graves, Bernie Gebala, Monroe Lucko, Dan Balusek, Evelyn Heese, Amalia Ondrasek, Dorothy Morris, Clarence Jecmenek, Olga Richter and Leo Kahlig.

Roll call of officers showed all present. All officers gave good reports, also all the chairpersons gave good reports.

Secretary Ann Koon read the minutes and roll call of sales representatives. She also announced the following new members; Wanda Joyce Martinec, Melissa Marie Simcik, Monroe James Marek, Jason Paul Haisler, Mark Allen Haisler, Jerry Wayne Haisler and Albert L. Glaser, Jr. Transferred out were Michelle Mikeska, Kendra Lynn Mikeska, Lonnie Wilson, Sr., Sarah Wilson and Darwin Nettles. We welcome the new members, and regret losing the transfers out.

Correspondence consisted of thank you notes from the Hedi Lines family, Walter Urbach family and from Dorothy Morris. There were requests for donations from the March of Dimes, The Arthritis Foundation, American Lung Association, Bell County Youth and Livestock Show, and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

6/VESTNEK—Wednesday, February 20, 1985 Baylor, since the SPJST has its own Scholarship Fund.

There were also letters of appreciation from the Child Abuse Center and The Texas Dept. of Human Resources, plus a letter from the Supreme Lodge acknowledging our 50 - year members.

The membership voted to honor the recipients with a covered dish supper after our April meeting, which will be held April 14 because Easter falls on the first Sunday. The members receiving the pins are Emil Driska, Marie Hegar, Evelyn Johnson and Anna Raska.

The youth club will hold their Easter egg hunt April 14th.

March 17th, the District II spring meeting will be held at Lodge 47. A business meeting with election of officers will follow a youth program. A meal will be served afterward. All the ladies of District II attending the meeting are asked to bring a salad or sweets.

February birthdays are Dana Glaser, Eleanor Spanhel, Annie Chupik, Helen Janacek and Vallie Tupy.

Lodge 88 Holds February Meeting Lodge Pokrok No . 88 held its monthly meeting February 11th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Bobby Allbritton presented the colors for Flagbearer Vincent Hegwood who couldn't be with us. Secretary Malak read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved as read.

President Ermis introduced Supreme Lodge officers Gebala and Mikulas, and Distict V Director Prochazka, who honored us with a visit.

President Ermis then announced that he was very pleased with the outcome of the Anniversary Day celebration February 10th. and thanked all who helped to make it a successful and enjoyable day.

Reports of January financials were read by Financial Secretary. Josephine Pflughaupt and Treasurer Lynn Pflughaupt. Youth Leader Marie Stayton announced that there is much enthusiasm among the youth members and that future activities include a cake sale for Valentine's Day and trips to rodeos. Willie Wehring, reported plans for a piano bar in the Blue Room, March 8th and drinks for only $1.25 each. Sounds interesting !

The pastry sales by the Birthday Club Sisters on Anniversary Day was a successful event, as always. These ladies are very faithful with this and other activities in order to help our lodge.

Sister Evelyn Vornsand reported that the Choral Club is rehearsing for performances at the Czech Heritage Festival in Corpus Christi, and the Main Street Fest in Houston.

Sister Helen Hegwood introduced the newly - elected officers of our Hlahol Dramatic Club and announced

that plans for a Czech play in April and English play hi Novenkber are underway. Sister Annie Vala, in charge of our kitchen for another year, thanked all who helped serve the dinner February 10th.

According to Chairman of the Board of Trustees VVarnasch, several Board members cleaned the steam table in the kitchen. The Board discussed the upcoming Committee Party, repairs needed to the barbecue house, and various other duties for which the Board assumes responsibilities. He then asked for a motion authorizing the Board to secure bids for a substantial renovation of the barbecue house.

Such motion was made by Brother Louis Hanus and seconded by Sister Tillie Helmcamp and passed.

Brother Rudy Dybala, reporting for the Czech Concert Orchestra, announced that, because the lodge has not seen fit to engage the services of the Wilbur Heinsohn orchestra, Mr. Heinsohn has stopped playing with the orchestra and, therefore, it was deemed necessary for them to cancel their plans to perform at the Corpus Christi Festival, the District V meeting and the Main Street Fest in Houston.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp announced details of the District V meeting to be held March 10th at Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena. A barbecue brisket dinner will be served and free beer furnished by Lodge No. 172 at noon. The meeting, at which election of officers will be held, begins at 1:30 p.m. A free dance with the Texas Brew will follow.

We all send our sympathy to our Second Vice President Ellen Miculka upon the loss of her mother.

The committee, appointed to investigate the possibility of direct billing, gave a report of the information secured as of this time.

Then we heard further details and information from Brothers Gebala and Mikulas on this subject. No decision was made at this meeting so that all members can consider carefully the information presented before voting on this important matter.

Sister Mary Kosut reported on charity hours performed in January.

District Youth Counselor reported on taking youth members to the Siminton Rodeo.

142 Houston Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Our Lodge. 142 monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 3 by President Mary Ann Kieschnick.

We had thirty - four members who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

The roll call of officers was held by Secretary Alice Jochen. All officers were present, except Guide Frank Tumis. The secretary also read the minutes from the previous meeting which were approved.

All officers' reports were given. The Board of Trustees and bar reports were read by Sister Rosie Schilhab.

We were sorry to report two of our members on the sick list; namely, Betty Moore and Edwin Brazda, Sr. We hope both of the members are feeling

much better at this time.

We had a lucky member present at this meeting. Congratulations to Brother Rudolf Cernoch who was the winner of the $40 capsule drawing.

Our next meeting prize reverts back to $5. Come to the meeting and you may be a winner!

Four door prizes went to: Adela Stein, Libby Kovar, Robert Kieschnick and Mary Ann Kieschnick.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on all the get well and sympathy cards sent, and a golden anniversary card to Brother Frank, and Sister Ruby Zacek of Jefferson, Texas who celebrated their golden anniversary. May you have many more!

New candidates accepted were Charles Eaton, Elaine McCullough, Frank M. McCullough and Gregory McCullough.

I failed to mention, in my last article, that Sister Carolyn Cleveland will remain our youth leader.

Brother Milan gave a report on our new roof and new ceilings in the club room and rest rooms. A good job was done.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Brother Bill Renfro who had surgery February 1, and to Sister Lois Renfro who is now home after a hospital stay. We had several to slip on the ice and hope you all get well, soon.

At Lodge 183, Mid - Cities Dear Members: The regular lodge meeting was held at the lodge hall Sunday, February 10th.

All officers were present and all reports were read and approved as read.

The next regular dance at the lodge will be history before this letter gets to press, but I would like to remind you members and friends that the 23rd which is the last Saturday of February ERNIE KUCERA from Nebraska will be at the lodge. Mark your calendar and come hear and dance to this great band, because they do not get to Texas very often and this may be the one chance you have to hear them.

Two new members were voted on and approved at the meeting; they were Marglene Mikus and Jo Ann Jeske; the lodge welcomes you as members and hopes your stay will be a long and happy one.

Perhaps you have heard a lot of complaining about inflation in the last few years, but there is a good side to inflation, because your children can no longer get sick on a nickle's worth of candy.

nearby have organized to "preserve, maintain and itromote the customs, languages, heritage and social relationships of the Americans Ii Czech descent." Probably ten times that many families, with more than 10,000 members, are residents of the Coastal Bend with many more spread throughout Texas.

On first thought one would think they came to the United States right after World War I -- and many of them did. Their landlocked, mountainous country was frequently being invaded by its several neighbors.

Early families in this part of Texas go back as far as 1851. Kostoryz Street in Corpus Christi is named for Stanley L. Kostoryz who began the Bohemia Colony Settlement in 1904. Families had settled in all the South Texas counties well before World War II. Their heritage is rich in so many ways -- they are proud of it. They want us all to share it with them at their day long festival.

All the world is familiar with the music of Dvorak and Smetana. Only last November a Czech writer, Jaroslav Siefert, won the Nobel prize for literature for his "Wor s of Love

Orchestra of Corpus Christi will play for the opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. and later.

From Houston will come a concert band and choral group, performing at 4 p.m. At 5 o'clock a grand finale will have all the singers and dancers.

An old Czech saying goes (pardon the lack of accents for the iettersl) "lez prace nejsou kolace." Or in Texan "Without work there are no kolac es."

There will be plenty of homemade kolaches (fruit filled tarts) at the Festival, along with other treats of Slavic ethnicity. An assortment of sausage, some on a stick; real strudels -- flaky layers of pastry filled with apples, raisins, pecans and coconut.

And, of course, pivo -- beer.

Always beef eaters, the Czechs will serve barbecue plates signifying their Americanization; also a beer garden setting is a place to listen, drink and talk.

At 8 p.m. a Parade of Costumes and a Grand March (led by officers of the Society) will staft off an evening of dancing to the music of the LeeRoy Matocha band.

During intermission, there will be a drawing for a "Dogwood Flowers" quilt and a "Lace Flowers" crocheted bedspread.

Here is an opportunity to spend a day in a transported foreign culture for only $2 admission. THAT'S FOR ALL DAY! Go and come as you like.

The backs of visitors' hands will be stamped for re-admission.

From a small Central European country, many fine families have come to South Texas and have made their mark in many fields. They invite you to come celebrate with them!

Cultural exhibits at the Festival will display folklore, religion, farming practices, wood carving, quilt making, genealogy, paintings, glassware, dolls and other examples of their arts and crafts.

All the world also knows about the gymnasts of the Czech Sokols. Sokol is Czech "falcon", chosen for its vigor, strength, ability to fly high. When founded back in 1862, the Sokol Society stressed a sound body and a sound mind. The first of the physical fitness and mental alertness plans so that a person might "fly high."

Sokol gymnasts will appear at 2 p.m. Dance groups will perform folk dances at 3 p.m. Choral groups will sing at noon. The Leo Majek

I want to tell you all about our Christmas in the "Big Apple" state of.

Studic and 1, my daughter, Linda Mikeska of Houston, Don. Jr. and Rebecca Vrba of Houston, Stephanie and Steven Mikeska of Rogers, Texas (these are my four grandchildren) were guests of my oldest son, Gene E. Mikeska of Big Spring and New York.

Among some of the interesting places we toured were the Empire State Building, United Nations, Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral (where we attended church Sunday morning), Cathedral of St. John The Devine, Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum.

In the Radio City Music Hall we saw "The Rockettes" and also a beautiful Christmas program.

Monday night we had to see the play entitled, "The Cats," the most interesting one.

We will see you all at the Choral Club.

Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: This is a follow - up of my previous letters in the Vestnik to remind our members, friends and our neighboring lodges from Ennis, Fort Worth, Dallas, Waco, Burleson and Elm Mott, that the softball team from Lodge 84 will present their "Czech Home Plate Review" Friday night, March 1 at 7 p.m.,at SPJST Lodge 84 on 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. The show is being presented to raise funds for new uniforms for the coming season.

The admisson is $6 for adults with FREE beer and popcorn; $3 for teens (14 - 18 year) with FREE cokes or popcorn. This is not a bad deal for your money, so make plans to come out for an evening of fun and pivo and also help the team pay for the new uniforms. Your presence and your support will be deeply appreciated.

The players are rehearsing now and hope to put on a good show, plus there will be country - western music which we feel will be enjoyed by everyone present for the show. Do come out Friday night, March 1, 1985. We are expecting a very large turnout of ex ballplayers and some will be in the skits.

Czech Heritage Festival The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas presents for the first time a Czech Heritage Festival on Saturday, March 2, 1985 at the Corpus Christi Bayfront Plaza Exhibit Hall from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; expect to be entertained all day by Czech choral groups, folk dancers, Sokol gymnasts and two Czech bands playing polka and waltz music.

Everyone will have an opportunity to examine cultural displays and browse through booths offering Czech kolache, Czech music selections, Czech cookbooks and much, much more.

Head Of Youth Department From The State Youth Director Statewide Youth Leader's Retreat The Youth Leader's Retreat is scheduled for March 23 - 24. Activities will begin promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and conclude immediately after the noon meal on Sunday. You may arrive Friday evening, but there will be no meal or cooking facilities available. The first meal to be served will be Saturday breakfast at 8 a.m.

All DYCs, youth leaders and assistant youth leaders are invited to attend the retreat. All persons attending should keep in mind that this

is a learning experience and not a free weekend at camp. Camp cost will be paid by the Supreme Lodge, as well as mileage reimbursement for one car per lodge. Only persons arriving by 9 a.m.

Saturday morning and attending the full retreat will be entitled to reimbursement.

For Animals Coat: Leave each napkin folded in quarters, as it originally comes in the package. Tear the folded napkin into strips, 'A to 1/2' wide; then tear each strip apart at the fold. The strips will be about 6 inches long. Fold each strip in half to 3 inches long.

Cover the body first. Glue the folded end of the napkin strip to the body at the neckline, letting it hang down loose over the body. For the lamb, the napkin strips are crumpled and then glued on for the close, curly effect of lamb's wool.

To cover the head and face, tear strips from 1/2 inch to 2 inches long. To make fur stand out from sides of face and behind eyes and ears, glue the fold of the strip at a right angle, as shown in Figure A. For areas in front of eyes, over the nose and around face, the fold is glued flat, as shown in Figure B. When the animal is completed, you

After the business part of your meeting you may want to try some of the following activities. All activities are appropriate for all ages of youth.

You may want to have the older ones direct the games - activities, while you prepare the craft materials.

GAMES: Shamrock March Before starting to play the game, fasten about the room as many shamrocks, less one, as there are children to play. All players join hands and march around in a circle to music.

When the music stops, each child runs for a shamrock, clasping his hand over it. One player will be left out, he must drop out of the game which is again resumed. Players left out, stand aside and clap to the beat of the music. One shamrock is removed from the wall each time the music begins again. The winner is the one who clasps his hand over the last remaining shamrock.

(Players who are eliminated may begin their craft at that time, so you can give help individually.)

CRAFTS: Wind Gauge Materials needed: 4 plastic foam cups, 2 plastic straws, fine, flexible wire(about 22 gauge) a nail, a wooden dowel or stick.

1) Cross two straws and wire them together at the center.

2) About 1 inch down from the rim of each cup, make a hole on each side.

The holes should be big enough for the straws to fit snugly.

3) Insert the straws through the holes in the cups. Put a dab of glue around the holes to hold the straws.

4) Insert a nail through the point where the two straws cross, and then hammer the nail into the top of the dowel. Set the dowel into the ground.

5) Add a strip of brightly colored tape around one of the cups.

As the cups spin around in one minute, count the number of times the striped cup .1 —es a revolution in one minute. Do this several times during one day and write down your figures.

Figure out the average number of revolutions per day. (Have each child make a wind- gauge to take home. Each child can report back the next meeting his average readings per day. Compare results.

You can figure out a wind ratio using the number of revolutions of your foam cups and the average wind

February Vestnik Project Dear Youth Club Members: The following is a Vestnik project for the month of February. To receive credit of up to 20 points it must be completed and returned to this office, postmarked no later than February 28, 1985.

Bag of Gold Print "Bag of Gold" on a large paper bag or grocery bag. Place money or candy treats in the bag and tie it closed at the top with yarn or string.

Wrap heavy rope around the top of the bag and hang the bag from the ceiling or outside from a tree limb.

To play the game, blindfold each child, one at a time, and have him try to burst bag open with a broom or yardstick. Each child gets three swings to burst the bag. If he misses all three, another child gets a turn, and so on.

When someone finally breaks the bag, gather up all the treats and divide them among the children. (You may want to have all the young children try first and then raise the bag for the older children.)

Holds Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m.

February 3, at the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was brought to order

by President ichelle Srubar; the pledge was led by Valerie Roye, and Linda Treumer said a prayer.

For the contest everyone Was asked to make a Valentine. The SPJST youth of El Campo Hillje held their monthly meeting at the American Legion Auxiliary Hall, FebruarY 7th.

Everyone brought a Valentine box to be judged at the meeting. We would like to thank Mrs. Bishop and Mrs. Parks who came to judge our boxes.

We discussed the istrict VI meeting to be held March 24th Texas.

Our club cut patterns for 'bibs for the residents in the nursing home.

Martha Bartos has a birthday in February.

He was a retired farmer.

Features From AMERICAN SOKOL Castles Of Czech aslovakia There are hundreds of castles in Czechoslovakia and many of them are opened to the public. The wealth of monuments and landmarks of Czechoslovakia from past centuries cover the whole of Czechoslovakia.

They are the silent witnesses to their longing, struggles, sufferings and joys, but chiefly, of course, they are the monuments to their work - to work that was creative, challenging and ingenious.

Castles and chateaus attract the most attention and interest of domestic and foreign tourists. There is no reason to wonder at this, because in view of their origin and architecture; the delightful Renaissance, Baroque

and Romanesque. And there is added interest provided by famous people and history and romantic stories and dramas about a world so far removed from the life and understanding of people of today. I will mention just a few that are mostly known to the American tourists: Hradcany (The Prague Castle) - this is not only the traditional symbol of the country, of its statehood and cultural traditions, but because of the continuous reconstruction and stylistic changes it underwent, one can trace the development of the art of building in Bohemia from the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries to the present day, not to speak of the fact that it is a magnificent artistic treasure house.

Hluboka (in the southern part of Cechy) - A castle originally owned by the sovereign which gradually came into the hands of the nobles. It underwent two big reconstructions at the end of the 16th century and in the twenties of the 18th century. The present appearance of the castle resulted from a romantic reconstruction of the family residence of the Schwarzenbergs. There are priceless treasures in this castle.

Karlstejn (not too far from Prague) This unique building was constructed on the order of the King of Bohemia and Roman Emperor Charles IV (Karel IV) from 1348 - 1365. The huge castle was not only a fortress and the monarch's country seat, but also the architectic embodiment of Karel's ideas on the state and the philosopy of that famous ruler. Charles IV devoted great attention and care particularly to the interior decoration of the castle chapels and halls. The large number of works that have survived - wall and panel paintings - have transformed the castle, into a remarkable gallery exemplifying the culmination period of Czech Gothic.

Changes in Architecture and Ways of Living I.Early Middle Ages - On the threshold of the Middle Ages the territory of today's Cechy and Morava was largely covered with forests. The fortified residence of that time - the hill - fort which was not only the administrative center and the dwelling of the princes but also the place of refuge for the people living nearby in times of war - was built in traditional fashion.

In the 11th century the appearance of the hilltop changed radically with the erection of new stone fortifications and inner reconstructions, carried out foremost in the new Romanesque style gradually spread out to centers of regional importance and fortified courts of the nobles.

II.The Gothic Period - The 13th century marked the rise in prestige and power of the Czech Premysl kings. The early Gothic castles were built on a fairly enclosed ground plan to make it easier to defend them. Their core was the massive refuge tower and rather small palace used as living quarters.

Nonetheless, in the second half of the 13th century new demands in living style were apparent in the greater insistance by the castle owner - for living comforts, expanded rooms necessary for entertainment and display. However, few castles have survived from this time in their original form.

The second half of the 13th century in particular - the time of the reign of Premysl Otakar II - was one of feverish building, when a new fortress was founded every year by the monarch or the aristocracy.

Castle construction in the 14th century was based on a symetrical ground plan structure; palaces and other buildings were located close to the fortifications and the towers, together with the palace, frequently became a part of the whole complex.

An outstanding role in Czech and European architecture was played by the castles built by Charles IV. The extensive reconstruction of Prague Castle, the foundation of a number of new border fortresses, the restoration of older royal castles, such as Krivoklat, and finally the grandiosely conceived Karlstejn all mark the culmination of castle construction of the Czech Middle Ages.

I/1. The enaissance - The Renaissance arrived in the Czech Lands very slowly. At the end of the 15th century it was still more a matter of an occasional acceptance of Jecorative elements. Only starting in the thirties of the 15th century did this stylistic change suddenly sweep the country, first in the rebuilding of Prague Castle and other assignments of the royal court.

In place of the strictly closed stronghold with dwelling quarters there now appeared the comfortable manor no longer cut off from the outside world, but actively utilizing natural elements. The landscaping of parks, the setting up of outlook towers, and summer palaces is a reflection of the new attitude of life and to nature and it paved the way for a new development of residential architecture in the next three centuries.

IV.Baroque and Classicism - Early Baroque started with the magnificant buildings made for Albrecht of Wallenstein in Prague, at Jicin, Frydland and a number of other places on his extensive estates. It occurred in the middle of the second half of the 17th century, when the country - after being ravaged by the Thirty Year War recovered somewhat and was able to bear the weight of the building enterprises of the aristocracy and the costs of the Counter - Reformation with its pompous edifices and reconstruction of churches.

The climax of Czech Baroque falls in the first half of the 18th century when, together with countless large and small buildings under construction for the Czech aristocracy and the officer corp aristocracy that had become domesticated after entering the country following the Hapsburg victory at the Battle of the White Mountain.

At this time, too, of course, stately homes whose beginnings went back many centuries continued to be built.

Baroque more or less left its imprint both on the alterations of castles, already transformed in the Renaissance periods into chateaux and also on some completey new and attractive reconstructions.

The Period of Romanticism and Historical Styles Whereas the Empire styles affected the country mainly in terms of interior decorations and furniture, with the overall architecture arrangements being more the exception than the rule the 19th century is virtually wholly marked by the fashionable wave of Romanticism and historical styles.

I will mention just a few more castles.

Buchlov - Originally it was a late Romanesque castle from the end of the first half of the 13th century. In the 15th century it was given in safekeeping to a nobleman and later became his direct possession. In the

16th century, because of lack of space inside the ramparts, construction was undertaken on buildings needed for services and purposes of pomp of a Renaissance residence. In the 17th century the outer bailey was enclosed by new fortifications, for protection against the threat of a Turkish invasion revived their function as a stronghold. At the beginning of the 19th century Buchlov became one of the first private museums in the country.

Cesky Krumlov - The second largest residence in Bohemia after Prague Castle. Its size and grandeur were in keeping with the importance of the Lords of Rozmberk, a branch of the Vitkovci family.

In the course of three hundred years, the rather small castle, dating from mid - 13th century, gradually expanded with the addition of more buildings for residence and services. A marked change occurred in the second half of the 16th century when Krumlov, under the ownership of Vilem and Petr Vok of Rozmberk was transformed into a large Renaissance chateau. The Baroque period left its mark primarily on the chateaux collections and especially its most attractive summer palace Bellarie and theatre.

Jindrichuv Hradec - This originally small water castle, dating from the beginning of the 13th century, evolved into a large residence for the family of the Lords of Hradec, and to this day is very picturesque. From the 17th century Jindrichuv Hradec remained virtually untouched by the big building drive of the Baroque period and thus retained its venerable interior structure and remarkable collections.

Items Of Interest County Officials To Key On Continuing Education County judges and commissioners from across Texas will be meeting in College Station for their annual conference, February 26-28, and will be putting a lot of emphasis on continuing education.

"Continuing Education--The Key to the Courthouse" will be the theme of the 27th annual County Judges and Commissioners Conference, which will be held at the Ramada Inn. Governor Mark White has been invited to address the conference at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 28th.

State Representative Gary Thompson of Abilene will address the county officials earlier that morning.

Thompson is chairman of the House Committee on County Affairs and will have some members of his committee on hand for an open forum and question - and - answer session.

The County Affairs Committee is studying a number of critical issues during the current legislative session, including optional ordinance - making authority, indigent health care and alternative sources of income.

Thompson and members of his committee will also take part in a review of legislation affecting counties.

Dr. Zerle L. Carpenter, director of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System, will open the conference with an official welcome. The annual conference is conducted by the Extension Service's Institute of County Government for the purpose of helping Texas' elected county officials serve more effectively and efficiently.

Major areas of discussions during the 3 - day conference will deal with "Administrative Responsibilities of Commissioners Courts" and "Relationships in County Government." In addition, the roles of various officials will be discussed, including the county judge, county commissioner, county clerk, district clerk, county treasurer, county auditor, county tax assessor collector, county and district attorney, justices of the peace and constables, sheriff and county Extension agent.

Other discussions will deal wih legal liabilities of county officials, revenue sharing and new handicap access regulations, county hospital administration, county subdivision regulations, rural fire prevention districts, emergency medical service and county ambulance service, weight limits for bridges, lubricants for heavy equipment, county personnel systems, preparing a county budget, and soil stabilization and dust control on county roads.

Appliance Warranty Rights Know

Consumers typically compare the features and prices of different brands before buying an appliance, but may neglect to compare the warranties.

"Manufacturers are not required by law to provide a warranty," says consumer economics specialist Bonnie L. Piernot. "But if one is given, it must meet certain standards for either a 'full or a limited warranty," adds the Texas A&M University AES home economist. Knowing the difference between the two types of warranties can save money and aggravation if the appliance must be repaired later, Piernot maintains.

"A full warranty promises that a defective product will be repaired or replaced free, including removal and reinstallation when necessary," Piernot says.

But a full warranty does not have to apply to the entire appliance, cautions the specialist. For example, a microwave oven may carry a full warranty on the cabinet, fan and magnatron tube but only a limited warranty on the touchmatic control.

Under a "limited warranty" consumers may have to pay for labor, reinstallation or other charges, she advises. They may also be required to return or take a product to a service location and receive a pro - rata refund or credit.

The term "limited warranty" should alert consumers to the fact that only part of the product may be covered, that it includes just the cost of repair parts or that it lasts only for a certain period of time, says Piernot.

"A limited warranty does not imply that the appliance is inferior or will not work as promised," states the home economist. "In fact, it may contribute to a lower initial cost for a particular brand."

Piernot recommends that consumers read warranty information carefully to decide whether they want to pay more for a full warranty.

Carrots

Carrots are high in Vitamin A and low in calories and are a nutritious snack food for children as well as adults.

Carrots currently are a good buy in Texas supermarkets, so consumers should stockup on them, says a horticulturist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The TAMU System.

Carrots can be eaten whole or as sticks, says Tom Longbrake. They are easy for children to carry for a snack and are not drippy, sticky or messy.

U.S. per capita consumption of carrots has risen in recent years to 7.4 pounds in 1982, Longbrake adds.

Most are eaten raw. Carrots lose between 10 and 20 percent of their vitamin and mineral content when cooked.

Carrots have a long shelf - life when stored in plastic bags in the crisper of a refrigerator. When washed clean, a carrot does not require peeling before munching as a snack or cutting into salads and stews.

Carrots are available year round in one - or two - pound bags. And at some specialty stores, they are available in bunches with tops intact, notes the horticulturist. Bunched carrots are generally more expensive and have a shorter shelf - life than those cello - packed with tops removed at the farm level. Besides, the tops are of no value.

Texas boasts some 15,000 acres of carrots with the crop valued at $26,000 annually. Carrots are harvested in the fall, winter and spring. Peak harvest months are November through April, so fresh carrots are "in season" now, says Longbrake.

The carrot was derived from the wild carrot or Queen Anne's lace, a common weed. It was a favorite vegetable in England in the 16th century and was taken to Virginia in 1609.

Adds Dietary Fiber To Spaghetti

Bran

Bran muffins, breads and cereals are well - known as foods that add fiber to the diet. Now spaghetti made with ten percent bran can be added to that list.

"Spaghetti containing bran has more than three times as much dietary fiber and higher mineral content than regular spaghetti," says Marilyn A. Haggard, a nutritionist with the Texas A&M University Agricultural EXtension Service.

Spaghetti with bran also passes the taste test with many consumers.

Research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that tasters who prefer whole wheat bread to white bread usually like bran spaghetti better than spaghetti without bran, Haggard reports.

Pastas, such as spaghetti, are low in sodium, fat and simple carbohydrates and contain a high level of complex carbohydrates, she says.

The ten percent bran spaghetti also contains much higher levels of protein, iron, calcium, manganese, phosphorous and zinc than spaghetti without bran.

"Bran spaghetti may not replace the traditional pasta, but it does offer another selection of products for people seeking a way to increase the level of fiber in their diets," remarks Haggard.

SPJST Permanent Certificateholders Are Now Offered A New Option Our last convention approved a new option in lieu of a premium refund called "paid-up addition" .

Paid-up addition means that an amount of insurance will be added to your current certificate. The amount of insurance added will be the amount purchased, at net premium rates, by the premium refund.

The insurance will be of the same type as is provided by your certificate.

During 1985 all premium refund checks will be forwarded to certificateholders from the Home Office according to the anniversary date. Each refund will be accompanied by a notice regarding this new option. The paid-up addition option will first be available beginning with the 1986 refunds.

This additional option will allow members to increase their insurance without having to buy a new insurance certificate. These CERTIFICATE NO.
