JST Permanent Certificatehoiet Are Now Offered A New Option Our last convention approved a new option in lieu of a premium refund called "paid-up addition".

Paid-up addition means that an amount of insurance will be added to your current certificate. The amount of insurance added will be the amount purchased, at net premium rates, by the premium refund.

The insurance will be of the same type as is provided by your certificate.

During 1985 all premium refund checks will be forwarded to certificateholders from the Home Office according to the anniversary date. Each refund will be accompanied by a notice regarding this new option. The paid-up addition option will first be available beginning with the 1986 refunds.

This additional option will allow members to increase their insurance without having to buy a new insurance certificate. These CERTIFICATE NO.

accumulations could be significant over a period of time. If the paid-up addition option is elected, you will receive a notice from the Home Office each year showing the amount of paid-up addition and the total amount accumulated.

Below is the form that each member will receive pertaining to this new option when a premium refund is due.

Please remember that these checks and notices of the new option will be forwarded according to the anniversary date of each certificate. January checks will b mailed next week.

In this issue, on the front page, you

will find a very important article on your annual premium refunds which you receive each year. The article is written by Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., our Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary, and he explains it rather thoroughly, however, in case you do not understand it fully, this is what your convention delegates decided in our convention at Corpus Christi in June 1984; which means, that if you wish to allow the Supreme Lodge increase your present insurance and use the refund for doing so instead of sending you the refund, they will do so. They will do that automatically

beginning January 1, 1986 unless you send in the NOTICE which you will receive with your premium refund check in 1985 and request the refund check sent to you.

We hope you understand the article and please READ it on the FRONT PAGE! *** Many of our lodges are considering direct billing of the membership dues by and from the Supreme Lodge, whereby the payments for your insurance premiums would be sent to the Home Office.

That is very good for some lodges, especially the small ones, PROBABLY, however, we must remember that we are a " Fraternal Benefit Society" operating on the "local lodge system." This system (direct billing by SL) eliminates the local lodge financial secretary office.

If a lodge chooses this system (direct billing by SL), the lodge further reduces the interest and activities of lodge members in their local lodge. Do you want this? Your editor feels this is one more step in reducing activity in our local lodges. We all know that there is TOO little activity and, especially, interest of our members in their local lodges' activities. Get them involved in your offices and activities! ***

February 10th will be the 20th anniversary of Pokrok Houston No. 88 in District V when their members

will be celebrating their 20th year at their present location. The kitchen crew has prepared an extra special menu for your family to dine out, and stay for all the enjoyable entertainment, all for a nominal price.

The officers, committees and interested members coordinated a well - planned day of festivities, therefore, we suggest you make an effort to attend and help them celebrate 20 delightful years. Lodge 88 members are extending a special invitation to everyone. We hope you will take an active part. *** February 17th promises to be another important occasion when Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, in District III will celebrate their "Diamond Jubilee" during two days of variety entertainment. (For more information -refer to Sister Rose Scott's letter and the ad on page 14 in this edition.)

The membership has also planned and prepared a special program for Sunday, so don't miss it because we understand there will be much entertainment in store for you during the designated weekend. Seventy - five years is a long time to look forward to remembering and we feel certain that the membership would appreciate your presence.

Incidently, their lodge also sponsors a softball team which will enter its 32nd consecutive season. The softball team is sponsoring a benefit function scheduled for March 1st at their mother lodge location, 26 25 Floyd Street. (Brother Ben Jarma, who maintains the lion's share of the team's responsibility and interest, is calling attention to their activities in this issue.) We hope you anticipate to attend and pledge your support toward their fund - raising project; the proceeds will go toward new uniforms. *** The month of February is also known as "Heart Month "in Texas.

Governor Mark White issued a proclamation designating February as Heart Month and urged all Texans to support the 1985 campaign of the American Heart Association. He is asking for support from the residents of Texas in the AHA's campaign_ against heart and blood vessel disease, our nation's number one killer.

Every February, history reminds us that we may wish to commemorate the birth of two famous United States Presidents, namely, Abraham Lincoln (February 12th) and George Washington (February 22nd). Lincoln, who was assassinated while in office, was highly acclaimed wherever he appeared for public speaking. The United States people have adopted what he believed in, "A government of

throughout history teaching to each generation, thereafter, and his "Gettysburg Address" will live among the United States populace forever.

George Washington, known as the "Father of our Country" has likewise

been highly acclaimed, especially since he served as the first president of our Country. He also was a firm believer in his thinking, especially when he stated, "I hope that I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man."

New postal rates. Look for stamps and embossed envelopes bearing the letter "D" and carrying no denomination starting on February 1st. The "D" stamps and envelopes are being issued in advance of the rise in postage rates on February 17, but wi!` epresent the new rate, which goes 11;-, om 20 cents to 22 cents for first class letters on that date. The "D" stamps--which can be used only for domestic mail--are expected to be replaced by stamps bearing the 22 cent denomination by the end of March. ***

Czech Heritage Festival The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas presents for the first time a Czech Heritage Festival on Saturday,

March 2, 1985 at the Corpus Christi Bayfront Plaza Exhibit Hall from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; expect to be entertained all day by Czech choral groups, folk dancers, Sokol gymnasts and two Czech bands playing polka and waltz music.

Everyone will have an opportunity to examine cultural displays and browse through booths offering Czech kolache, Czech music selections, Czech cookbooks and much, much more.

In addition to the day's festivities, a "Parade of Costumes" precedes an evening of oldtime dance music until midnight; the admission will be $2.

Lodge 66 Holds Monthly Meeting Here we are in the new year and we have already got one month behind us.

Let's all try to attend more meetings this year so that a majority of our membership has some say in the business affairs of the lodge.

Even though the weather was real cold Sunday, January 20, there was a fairly good attendance at our meeting.

Our Past President Johnnie Gaidusek opened the meeting at 2:30 p.m. Larry Yates and Bill Warren presented the flags and Michael Warren led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and lodge motto.

Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members, James W. Adcock and Corene Sims. Also prayers were said for Jeff Warhol who is very sick and in the hospital.

At this point, Brother Gaidusek turned the gavel over to our new President Ray Orsag. All officers were present except Brother Otto Hanus, our Czech reporter. Hope to see you in February, Brother Otto!

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and, after a few minor corrections, were approved.

Correspondence was read by Sister Engelke from the following: Supreme Lodge concerning the 8 percent refund due our lodge, Elm Mott Volunteer Fire Dept. (thank you for a contribution), a thank you from the family of Corene Sims, Good wishes from Brother and Sister Ed and Agnes Mazanec, and a $100 donation was sent in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schronsky.

Sister Pruitt read correspondence from Brother and Sister Emil and Annie Hanus thanking everyone for their help at their anniversary celebration; also Holiday greetings were sent from the Supreme Lodge.

The Board met January 9 and Brother Shilling gave the minutes of that meeting.

Our Youth Leader Kay Owen

reported that the youth would be making Valentine boxes and filling them with some sort of dessert or goodies. Then someone would draw names of the adults to see who would get one of these delightful surprises.

They are still collecting soup labels and aluminum cans. The youth also voted to give $50 to the Henrys, a family who was in need of some financial assistance. The youth were also planning to go to the movies January 31st.

Sister Parma was asked to come forward; she was presented with a check for $50 for the scholarship fund.

She also received donations from Brother and Sister Silas and Jeanette Smith and Arthur and Mary Langlotz.

The Entertainment Committee chairman thanked all the ladies for bringing pastries to the meeting to go along with the nice dinner that was served. The food that was left would be given to the Meals on Wheels. Tor the February meeting, Sister Orsag is going to furnish deer chili with beans; Sister Engelke will furnish the drinks.

This will be in honor o f both their husbands' birthdays. The other ladies of the lodge were asked to bring the desserts.

Our Welfare Committee chairman, Sister Smith, reported that there was no money available from the bingo fund this month to make any donations with. In the future, donations would be made as the money became available. She then read Thank You's from the following: the Joe Kozlovskys, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Nors, Jeff and Ginger Warhol, Sister Michael Freeby for the Robles family, St. Joseph's Church in Elk, Family Abuse Center, Caritas and the Dept. of Human Resources Food Pantry.

Sister Polly Gaidusek reported having sent sympathy cards to the following: Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hanus, Brother Wm. Cervenka, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cervenka, Mrs. Marie Cervenka, Rudolph Cervenka, William Bush, Alfred Pankonien, Lee Rich, Walter Grimes, Horace Miller and Vernon Smith. Get Well cards were sent to Sister Agnes Mazanec, Brother Bat Vernetti, Brother Otto Hanus, Sister Minnie Narvoc, Brother Jerry Parma, Brother James Pavlicek and little Steven Pankonien. Baby congratulations went to Mr. and Mrs. William Palasoto.

The books were audited, all was found to be in order.

There were ten new members accepted, they were: Robert C. Tickell, Devian J. Beshears, Brandon Hajek, Carolyn V. Holecek, Chase A. Sager, Sharon E. Sager, Gary L. Sager, Joy C. Sager, Georgia L. Cervenka and Michael R. Volcik. Additional insurance was written on Raymond Shelton, Sr., Helen Shelton, Karen Shelton and Robert W. Pavelka. We also had 3 transfers • accepted into the lodge.

Resolutions of Sympathy were read for Sister Corene Sims and Brother James Adcock.

For the best interest of the lodge, Brother Jim Locke said that free passes should be issued to lodge members to use at any time except, of course, when a special band from out of state plays or at New Year's. The membership agreed. Anyone wishing to receive their passes should send a self - addressed stamped envelope to Sister Darlene Engelke and she will send it.

Brother Silas Smith reported on the direct billing system that the Supreme Lodge is incorporating. This is a topic that all lodges will be discussing quite a

4/VESTNfK— Wednesday, February 6, 1985 bit in the coming months. Under the direct billing system, the local lodges would no longer have need of a financial secretary. All payments would be made directly to the Supreme Lodge. Our lodge is going to vote on this matter at the February meeting,therefore, everyone is asked to attend this meeting; this is something of great importance! There is a great deal of things to be discussed concerning this matter that pertain directly to you the members of this lodge.

Brother Smith also reported that out of 15 sales representatives, 13 were present at our meeting. He told everyone to remember that if it wasn't for these representatives our lodge would not receive the 8 percent refund that is given to the lodge each year.

66 To Hold Important Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Lodge 66 will hold its regular meeting February 17 at Linden Hall, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

This is a very important meeting.

There will be a discussion and vote on the question of direct billing; should our members be billed direct from the Supreme Lodge for our premiums, or continue to be billed from our lodge by our financial - secretary. Come out, express your opinion and vote on this important question.

The membership cards for 1985 are now available. They can be picked up at the meetings or at the ticket office when Sister Engelke is at the office.

House Committee -- Brother Salac reported the bar work would start Saturday and asked for all to help.

Czech Culture -- A meeting will be held February 23rd.

Softball Team -- Brother Jarma spoke on the entertainment the team members are planning for March 1st.

New uniforms are needed and he invites all to support this project.

Brother Emil Petr reported favorably on hall rental; a big job to say the least.

The membership is excited about the lodge's 75th birthday and will celebrate for 2 days; Saturday, February 16 -- a dance with music by the Vrazels of Buckholts; and Sunday, February 17 -- 1::30 to 12:30 Vesely cas (happy times) 12:30 to 2 p.m. dinner will be served (roast beef and sausage with all the trimmings). This dinner will be catered, so ladies NO PASTRY is needed.

At 2 p.m. our program will have the Czech Concert Orchestra entertaining as well as the Czech Singers on stage.

The youth will also present a short program. You will also be introduced to our 50 - year members as they receive their pins and also meet the "Brother and Sister" of Lodge No. 84.

Last, but not least, you can look forward to meeting our guest speakers.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik, Brother Jerry Bartos of Lodge No. 130, and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. If you haven't met President Leshikar now is our chance. rother Bartos, who is so well - known in Dallas for his involvement in this great city, will be no stranger to most who are present and, of course, District HI Director Pokladnik is our own Lodge 84 member having served as president so many, many years. SP.IST Lodge 84 Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: Another year has just passed and this means the SPJST Softball Team at Lodge 84 is planning for another season, our 32nd in a row, it's some sort of a record.

We will start workouts in a few weeks when the weather warms up.

We invite any prospective ball players who may be interested to try out for the team. The only requirement is that you are a member of SPJST and that you can make the team; it's a lot of good and clean fun.

Our uniforms are about worn out, so the team is planning a show, I believe they will call it "Czech Home Plate Review" to try and raise funds for the uniforms. This show will take place Friday night, March 1, 1985 at our SPJST Lodge No. 84 at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas, from 8 to 10 or 10:30 p.m. It will feature a Western Combo featuring Ricky Skaggs and other western music; they are amateurs, but not too bad. Also there will be comedians, skits featuring old: time ball players and just a lot of fun and surprises. The admission will be $6 per adult and $3 for 14 - 18 years of age. There will also.be free beer for the adults and free drinks for the 14 to 18 year olds. The players are working on this program.

We hope that a lot of adults from Lodge 84, from our brother Lodge 130, plus other fraternal societies, as well as Ennis, Fort Worth, and Burleson lodges,come to our show. We must have your support to make this a financial success.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, January 11 at 7 p.m. with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

Various reports were given; old and new business was discussed.

Monday, February 4, the first of a series of Czech language lessons will be held with Jerry Schank as the instructor. This class will meet every Monday for 10 sessions, except the Monday when the lodge monthly meeting conflicts. I understand there are a few openings at this time. Attend class Monday, February 18 and register. There is no charge for these Czech lessons and the class starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Vrazel dance was well attended Saturday, January 19th. It was a jolly crowd and a happy time was had by all.

Shirley Sue High has been confined to the hospital for tests and surgery.

She will go to Methodist later for further treatments but, at this time, she is at home. We wish you a speedy recovery and best of luck, Sue! I'm sure she would appreciate a card or a phone call.

November 7, 1984 Cassandra Wruble married Steve Regian in Tyler, Texas. Cassandra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Wruble, Jr. and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Wruble of Fort Worth. I realize I'm terribly late in making this announcement but I didn't know until our January meeting that as the new reporter I should have been sending in the news soon after Christmas.

We hope to see everyone at our Valentine dance Sunday, February 17 at 3 p.m. The music will be by Henry Rejcek and his Band.

Please put down on your calendars the place to be Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. is National Hall for our Benefit Dance for the Child Abuse Program "Kash for Kids." The music will be played by The Country Boys Polka Band of Ennis.

I'm new to this reporting job, so I hope everyone will be patient with me.

I will try to do an adequate job and

hope that you will be pleased because I have come to envy all of you with a Czech heritage.

Since I married my husband, Johnny, I have found his Czech background fascinating. At first he couldn't understand why I was so interested in the traditions, history, and even the language- but that was because he grew up Surrounded by his Czech heritage. Once he realized that not everyone is fortunate enough to have a sense of belonging to such a unique background, he also has become eager to learn more of his heritage.

So Johnny, our son Joseph, and I

are trying to be active and productive members of SPJST Lodge No. 92 and wish to tell everyone who reads this paper to find out when your lodge meets and to go. It's a pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon. And once you find your way into a group of Czechs, you have found friends and the promise of a fun, busy, new life.

Our next meeting will be February 10th.

Lodge 139 Makes $500 Contribution Dear Members: The January 9 meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139 got underway at the Danbury Fire Station with Lodge President Vincent Hechler presenting a check for $500 to the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department. The check was a donation to the Danbury VFD in appreciation of the many services the organization provides the community.

Recording Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the last meeting and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp gave her report. In the absence of Treasurer Lonnie Lostak, Tommie Lostak gave the financial report.

Tentative plans for a lodge family day barbecue were discussed. The date selected for the barbecue is April 13, but final plans, as to time and place, will be decided at the February meeting. President Hechler appointed Lorenda Baldwin to head the Barbecue Committee, and Helen Filipp will be in charge of the Invitation Committee. It is hoped this barbecue will be as huge a success as the last one which was held in April 1983.

After the business meeting, the attending members held a social. There was a wide variety of snack foods and sweets which was enjoyed by all.

Lodge 172, Pasadena Newsletter (January to June 1985 Events) Dear Members: Welcome 1985, a little late into the month of January. It is "Rodeo & Go Texan" time in Harris County once again and, as every year, we want to help everyone get into the spirit by providing you with some really good country and western music. We wish that more of our members could have been present Saturday, January 19, for Randy Corner & Ronnie Parker with the Pickers Choice Band (excellent music); a crowd of over 400 enjoyed the evening. Please make a note of that band and do come on out the next time they play; the dates are unknown at this writing, but we will have them back. The year is young, there is still plenty of good music to come. Check your little yellow card for bands, types of music, and dates. Come out and support your lodge, be proud to be a member of such a worthy organization.

February . 10 - A dinner - dance beginning at 1 p.m. with music by Hard Time Country from 3 until 7 p.m. Do try to attend, it is well worth the effort. There will be good food, good music, all shared by good friends, all for only $6 per person, children under six,$3.

March 2 - The Vrazels have many local fans, but those of you who have never heard that special band of Vrazel music, do come out, then you will be able to decide if you want to share your New Year's Eve with us at the lodge; the Vrazels are providing our music for New Year's Eve 1985.

March 8 - Don't overlook our Friday night dances! We only have a few each year. March 8 the River Road Boys will be providing the music. They are great fun.

March 10 - Our lodge has the honor of hosting the District V meeting this year; besides the meeting, we will have a very fine dinner and our music will be provided by the fantastic Texas Brew from 3 until 7 p.m. Let's all come out for this one; $6 for adults, $3 for children under 6 years of age.

April 14 - Social dinner - dance FREE to members! All others will be $6 for adults, and $3 for children.

May 11 - The Pasadena Firemen are having their Fund - Raising Benefit.

June 8 - This is one of our really Big Dances. This year we, at Lodge 172, are venturing into some really fine ballroom music and we are counting

Lodge 189 Announces Quarterly Date Meetings Dear Members: Our quarterly meeting was held December 9, 1984. A short business meeting was held) followed by introduction of guests; included were Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mikulas, Jr. and family, and Jane Junek. After his introduction, Brother Mikulas spoke to the members about insurance changes and installed the 1985 lodge officers.

Following the meeting, the Christmas Party was held. Everyone enjoyed the, food and the exchanging of the white elephant gifts. Two door prizes were given: a fruit cake given by Ernest Wentrcek, Sr., and an SPJST belt buckle.

The meeting schedule for 1985 is: March 10th, June 9th, September 8th, and December 8th; all meetings are held at 3:30 p.m. at the KC Hall in Bryan.

CESA T Executive Committee Meeting At the Executive Council meeting of CESAT (Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas) and MATICE (Texas Council of Higher Education) held Saturday, January 19, 1985 in the Fayette County Library in La Grange,

Texas, the chairman of the Education Committee, Calvin Chervenka, announced the scholarship winners in the 1984 CESAT scholarship competition.

Two students of Czech at Flatonia High School were designated as winners of the $150 scholarships. They are Ronald James Kallus, Jr. and Janice Koncaba, both of Flatonia.

Honorable mention went to Michael Johnson, also of Flatonia. The members of the Education Committee, Calvin Chervenka, Thadious Polasek and James W. Mendl, Jr. were assisted in their selection by Professors of Czech, William E. Souchek, Joseph J. Skrivanek and Frantisek W. Galan.

Scholarship award presentations were at a ceremony in connection with the Czech Day celebration at the Parish Hall in Moravia Sunday, February 3, 1985.

In the Saturday, January 19, meeting, the need for incentives for high school students and - or college students to study the Czech language and culture was stressed. It was pointed out that CESAT - MATICE has scholarship and loan funds available; however, the students in most schools and communities are not aware of the availability of these funds or how to go about applying for them.

Inquiries regarding loans and - or scholarships should be addressed to: Dr. Clinton Machann Secretary, The Texas Council of Higher Education 500 Gilchrist Street College Station, Texas 78840 CESAT realizes that because of the new requirements by Texas colleges and universities of two years of language in high school for college entrance and one year of language in college or university, the Czech language could very well become one of the qualifying languages in high, college - university curricula. If this situation develops, the need for qualified Czech language teachers would become most important, and so preparation for that need should be made now through the CESAT MATICE loan and scholarship program to create more interest and study in the Czech language. Inasmuch as the CESAT - MATICE loan scholarship fund is not very well endowed at the present time, CESAT will appreciate any donations from individuals and - or Czech fraternal organizations, Czech language newspapers, historical societies, etc.

Ladies' Circle Of Lodge 92, Fort Worth Meet Dear Members and Friends: Mary Powers, president, opened our meeting with a silent prayer for Mr. Louis Belota, a longtime member of SPJST No. 92 and of our Ladies' Circle, who passed away Sunday, January 6, 1985. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the Belota family. May he rest in peace.

Frances Grizzard read the secretary's minutes and Hermina Cihacek gave the treasurer's report.

Both were approved as read.

Lillie McMillen, chairperson of the Sunshine Committee, read her report.

Clara Cohen fell on the ice and was injured. She was taken to the Harris Hospital. Melissa Hubenak was in Cook's Children Hospital during the last part of December; later I heard that Frances Jaworksi was in the hospital with pneumonia. We hope she is better by now.

Ida Mayer won the door prize donated by Maggie Konecny. Flora Koci will donate the prize for the February meeting.

We wish to congratulate Betty Billingston on her outstanding installation of the incoming officers who were installed for the next two years; namely, President - Florence Greer, Vice President - Donna Hubenak, Secretary - Frances

Grizzard, and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek. Flora Koci was appointed reporter. It really was a sweet installation.

Hermina Cihacek presented a gift from the Ladies' Circle. to Mary Powers who was then given a standing ovation for all her work for the past two years.

Donna Hubenak read a poem which was enjoyed by all.

Esta Belle Hubenak reported that her two granddaughters, who are members of the SPJST Lodge No. 92 Youth Club, were in the Richland Haltom Beauty Contest recently.

Melissa won fourth runner - up in "Little Petite" and Holly won Pre Teen.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Julia Dueser, Bennie Hundle, Anna Langer and Mary Powers.

I received a letter from Mrs. Bennie Bartek saying that Helen Oujesky from San Antonio, Texas had stopped by her house for a short visit. While here, Helen was trying to sell her mother's house. Helen said that her mother, Lydia Matusevich, is doing real well in the nursing home, but that she gets real lonesome and wished that some of her former friends would call, write, or visit her. Helen said that she takes her home once in a while to her house to give her a change from the nursing home.

Hostesses for our next meeting will be Maggie Konecny, Betty Billingston, Donna Hubenak and Tillie Gillis.

The young serving girl, in 1830, said, "Tell me how you dance the Polka and I will tell you how you love." Other popular folk dances are the Furiant, Kolecko (Round Dance), rejdovak (couple's dance) and the motovidlo (reel dance) which comes to life before our very eyes during the many holidays

From The District Youth Counselors District II Skating Party And Camp Dates Set Just a few lines of important dates that have just been verified. I'm sorry it took so long.

The first on this list is our Valentine Skating Party, which will be held at Skate Haven in Temple February 17 beginning at 5 p.m. and we will skate until about 7:15 p.m.

The next in line is our Recreation Lab at the 4-H Center in Brovvnwood; only two people from our district may attend, so if you're interested in going please let me know. The weekend Lab is March 8, 9 and 10 and the week long lab starts March 10 and will last through Friday (15th).

March 17 we will have our District II spring meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. with a business meeting and, at about 3:30, we plan to have a break and the youth clubs will feature a type of flea market bake sale, so we should plan to buy some baked items from the youth.

After the break we plan a short youth program and then we will continue with the business meeting and election of district officers.

After adjournment of the meeting, a supper is planned. There will be no charge to the membership, but we are asking you to please bring a salad or a sweet. This supper is sponsored by Lodge No. 47 and District II. Let's all plan to attend and support this meeting.

The next dates are March 23 and 24 for a Statewide Youth Leaders' and Assistants' Retreat, which will be held at Camp Lone Star at La Grange; this retreat is sponsored by the Home Office, so watch for details in the upcoming issues of the Vestnik. A very informative and beneficial weekend is planned and, will be held at a beautiful campsite.

Then April 9 we will have a District II Planning Day at Lodge 20 in Granger; this day we plan the schedule of activities for camp, camp crafts, YAD, and all forms and points will be discussed. You should plan to be present.

The District II YAD and Royalty will be held July 14 at Lodge 18 in Elgin. (Details will be available later) The camping days for District youth members are also set, so you should plan your vacation to coincide with these days. The dates are August 2nd through August 8th. (More details later) The District II fall meeting date is still not positive.

The State YAD and Royalty will be, again, the same day and that will be August 18 at the Temple Convention Center.

Please put these dates on your calendar. We hope you are planning to attend all of these district activities.

This year we have a new State Youth Director who is planning on giving us much good information. The new SYD is Sue Meadows and is trained in youth activities and camping. We are happy to have Sue join our organization and we plan to have a better camp than ever, so plan to be there. Let's have a 10 percent increase over last year; that was my commitment to the Home Office, so let's reach this goal.

Door prizes will be given at the

Skating Party and you may,again, bring a friend but please ask your friend to join your youth club. The date is February 17 at Skate Haven in Temple. Let's plan to meet our friends there.

The New Tabor SPJST youth met at 1 p.m. at the New Tabor Hall for our monthly meeting.

We discussed having a Valentine Party for February 16 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The lodge is inviting all area SPJST lodges to come and join in the fun.

There will be a committee meeting held Saturday, February 2 at the youth leader's home to organize the party.

The committee members are Donna Fritz, Michelle Surovik, Holly Suehs and Shaunna Haisler.

After the meeting everyone went to the movies and out to eat. There were 33 persons present. It was really a lot of fun.

Brother Hawkins was a retired bookkeeper and auditor and member of Masonic Lodge 478 where he served as past secretary. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

Brother Hawkins is survived by one son, Robert E. L. Hawkins of Waco; one daughter, Cordelia Drews of California; a step-brother, Elmer Triplett of Hillsboro; and two grandchildren, Marvin and Eric Drews.

Pallbearers were Vernon Herring, Sandy Taylor, Lonnie Hill, Robert Plsek, Sr., Ed Nemecek and Eddie Archer.

Honorary pallbearers included J.B. Trafton, Karl Benner, Toby Tobola, George Kubacak, Emil Nors and Raymond Volcik.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Taiton No. 30, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the family of EDWIN J. BOEHM, age 65, who died at his home December 24, 1984 after an extended illness.

Brother Boehm was born April 9, 1919 in Moravia. He was a member of the Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge No. 30, served in World War II, and operated a water well service.

Rosary was recited in the Triska Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p.m.

December 26th. Services were held next day at the St. Phillip's Catholic Church with the Rev. James Brunner officiating. Burial was in Holy Cross Memorial Park with Military Honors.

Survivors include his wife, Vlasta Boehm of El Campo; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian L. Kornett of Spring, Texas and Marie Beavers of Bay City;

88, of 300 Haven St., formerly of 600 S. Marable in West, who passed away 27 December 1984, at the West Rest Haven.

Brother Busby, born 20 October 1896 in Blevins, Texas, married Gracie Greenhill in 1920. He owned and operated Busby Grocery from January 1939 until 1966. He then worked at the store several years for his son until he retired.

Brother Busby was a member of Woodman of the World and served as state auditor and financial secretary for 35 years. He was a member of VFW and a member of American Legion where he held the office as Chaplain. He was a member of International Order of Odd Fellows.

He was a paidup member of Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West.

He was a member of West Church of Christ where he was an Elder and Deacon. He served in numerous church offices including song leader.

He was a veteran of World War I serving in the United States Army in France.

Survivors include his wife, Gracie Busby of West; two sons, Robert Busby of Waco and Dick Busby of Ross; two daughters, Willie Lois Patterson of McGregor and Helen Penland of Kansas City, Missouri; two sisters, 17 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and two great - great grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m.

December 29 at the West Church of Christ with Minister Leon Meeks officiating. Interment was in White Rock Cemetery.

Grandson served as pallbearers.

Brother Lonnie was born July 4, 1932. A lifelong member of Longview, he was a superintendent of postal operations of the United States Postal Service at the time of his death, served in a U.S. Army Tank Battalion during the Korean War, was a 32nd degree member of Longview Masonic Lodge No. 404, Sharon Temple Shrine in Tyler and Waco Consistatory, a supporting, social member of SPJST Lodge No. 178, and a member of the Oakland Heights Baptist Church.

Brother Lonnie loved the outdoors, and expressed his love for mother nature's beauty with his skillful gardening., Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Monday, December 31, in Rader Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev .Jack Fritts officiating .Burial followed in the Summerfield Cemetery in Longview.

Survivors include his wife, Liz Whitehurst of Longview; daughters, Kim Terry and Lisa Sanders, both of Dallas, and Lally Linthicum, Jill Sanders and Tina Allison, all of Longview; Mary Ellen Lipsey of Longview; mother, Ernestine Whitehurst of Longview; and of grandson, Jayson Allison Longview.

His frequent visits to the lodge home with his wife Elizabeth, a member of Lodge No. 178, will be missed greatly by the membership.

Sister Bren was a devoted member of •SPJST Lodge 79 and of Sokol Corpus Christi.

Strani (Morava) Born in Czechoslovakia, she lived in the Taft area for many years where she and her hilsband farmed. She moved to Corpus Christi in 1965.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charlie Elmer.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Elmer of Corpus Christi; two daughters, Agnes Burge of Kerrville and Annie Spencer of Corpus Christi; 13 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the Maxwell P. Dunne Chapel. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Janacek included the folk song "Ondras, Ondras"' in his Poetry of the Folk Songs of Hukvaldy (1898) and discussed with the Silesian author Arnost Chamrad the composition of a libretto for an opera based on the Ondras theme.

Translator's note: Silesian and Moravian legends about Ondras are based on the life of Ondras Sebesta, who was born in the village of Janovice in 1680. Sebesta, the son of a local official, became a highwayman who plundered the rich and fed the poor.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister FRANCES DALTON, who passed away Friday, January 25, 1985 in a local nursing home.

Sister Dalton was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia, March 4, 1904 and came to the United States in 1906.

She was a former member of All Saints Catholic Church and a member of Lodge 154 since 1957.

Survivors include brothers, Frank Zacek of Jefferson, Texas, Joe Zacek, V.W.Zacek, Jimmie Zacek, all of Fort Worth, Charlie Zacek of Denton; sisters, Mary Short of Mancos, Colorado and Annie Eaton and Josie Stewart of Mansfield.

Wake services were held at 7:30 p.m.

Lachian Origin The region of Lachia, which gave the Czech nation Frantisek Palacky, Pavel Krizkovsky, and Petr Bezruc, was home to generations of the Janacek family. The natural beauty of the Beskyd Mountains here contrasts with modern industrialization. Lachia is part mountain pastures, part mines, mills and • factories. The local population's defiance in the face of persecution is embodied in the figure of the folk hero Ondras. The character of Ondras, which inspired the Czech artist Mikolas Ales and poet Petr

The people of Lachia have weathered a tragic history and fashioned a distinctive culture and an unusually musical linguistic dialect.

Janacek characterized his native Lachia with these fitting words: "A beautiful country, quiet people, a soft speech which melts the heart."(1) Lachia, of course, differs from the other regions of Czechoslovakia in its cultural orientation.(2) Janacek's ancestors migrated at the end of the 17th century from the village of Smilovice in the Tesin area and settled near Frydek, where three generations worked as weavers. The Janacek family came to settle in the poor villages of Albrechticky and Hukvaldy. From his native Lachia, Leos Janacek inherited his Czech identity, an affinity for the Slavic East, and a resilient strength and courage in the face of adversity. Janacek's realistic personal philosophy sprang from the common folk's perception of life's often difficult realities.

His Native Hukvaldy The basic character traits of the Lachian people were strengthened and defined in Leos Janacek through his family's history. His ancestors were originally small farmers and weavers.

Leos' grandfather, Jiri Janacek, (1778 -1848), schoolteacher in Albrechticky, began the family schoolmaster tradition. Leos' uncle, Vincenc (1821 - 1901), and father Jiri, (1815 - 1866), were schoolteachers and national awakeners in their father's mold .(3) Despite their poverty these men sought to uplift their people, whose difficult existence they knew first - hand.

Leos Janacek was born July 3, 1854, the ninth of thirteen children born to Hukvaldy schoolmaster Jiri and his wife, Amalie (Grulich) Janacek. The position of schoolmaster in Hukvaldy was a poor one and Leos' father, a talented teacher and musician and an enthusiastic national awakener, died at age 51, a sacrifice to his calling and to oppressive economic and social conditions. Leos inherited, from his father and grandfather, not only a desire for cultural stimulation but also a lively musical sense. From the impoverished village of Hukvaldy Leos Janacek carried, throughout his life, a love for nature, for mankind, and for man's song, speech and dance.

At the Augustinian Monastery Through the efforts of Pavel Krizkovsky, whom Jiri Janacek had tutored during his brief term at the Neplachovice school (1831 - 1832), Leos was accepted at the Augustinian Monastery school in Brno in 1865.

Leos entered an invigorating scholastic environment noted for its high artistic and scientific standards. The school was, at that time, home to several distinguished personalities. The

Abbott Cyril Napp was the friend of philologist Josef Dobrovsky and historian Frantisek Palacky. The naturalist Gregor Mendel, historian Tomas Bratranek, poet - philosopherjournalist Matous Klacel, and composer Pavel Krizkovsky, worked here as well. The Augustinian Monastery was an important center of a Pan - Slavism nurtured on the cult of Cyril and Methodius and the work of Jan Kollar. From the time of his studies in Brno, Janacek's national consciousness took on a decisive Pan Slavic character. This is evidenced in his correspondence from the period.

Prior to the Velehrad Cyrilomethodian celebration of 1869, Janacek wrote to his uncle: "Dear uncle, you don't know how I love the Czech...OH, you can't conceive how I long to see the holy soil on which the mighty Svatopluk and the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius once walked. I am not worthy to tread this sacred ground...I have one request to make of you, dearest Uncle. I beg you to buy me a Slavic costume." With this letter Janacek enclosed a patriotic poem entitled: "To the Assassins" Mad murderers, vain is your hope That from the Slays your profits grow.

Life calls the Slav to glory.

professor at the Teachers' Training Institute in Brno. In 1881 he founded a school of organ. which was made a conservatory in 1919. Throughout his life Janacek was absorbed by an interest in scientific and theoretical subjects. He authored a series of studies dealing with music, psychology, phonetics, enthnography, and musical criticism.

Conductor and Choir Director Janacek's work as conductor dates from 1872. He substituted for Pavel Krizkovsky at Performances of the Augustinian school choir. From 1873 until 1876 he served as director of the Svatopluk Choral Society. He directed the Beseda Choral Society of Brno from 1876 throughout much of the period up until 1888. With the Beseda Choral Society he established the tradition, which is still observed, of cantata and choral work performances in Brno. The Beseda's repertoire included works from the world over as well as Czech compositions, including those of Antonin Dvorak. Jan Kunc summed up Leos Janacek's work as a conductor: "Krizkovsky's student was a conductor like few others. He was noted for the meticulous conscientiousness with which he studied a score, for the precision with which he worked out the slightest detail of a composition, and for a warmth with which he overwhelmed his in feriors."(6)

Even the Slav knows his hour.

Ties to Tradition Quiet, murderers! Silence, wretched sooth - sayers! [4] At The Augustinian Monastery school, Janacek received personal instruction from Pavel Krizkovsky.

Janacek attended the Lackerweise school and later high school (1866 1869). In 1869 he entered the Teachers' Training Institute which he attended until 1872. He maintained contacts with the monastery school choir.

Janacek's youth was rich in cultural stimuli, however, it was also, for the most part, cheerless. He suffered from want, loneliness, and the confinement of the monastery atmosphere. In his old age he wrote: "Lonely and constantly under surveillance, in gloomy moments we stood at the barred windows. We watched the tiny blue birds, Blue Boys like ourselves but freer, fly from the prelate's garden to peck at the crumbs we threw them."(5) Janacek soon came to know tragedy.

When he was twelve his father died.

Janacek nevertheless set out on life's journey wih courage and with unbridled energy.

Janacek's youthful attempts at composition date to the period of his activity as choir director. He had, of course, received a thorough theoretical training and it is evident from his work that he was not a self - taught musician. Janacek forms a link in the evolutionary development of the Czech musical tradition. He wrote his first choral works influenced by Pavel Krizkovsky. His orchestral works Suita (1877) and ldyla (1878) show the influence of Dvorak. Janacek became a devoted friend of Antonin Dvorak and in his memoirs he described his identification with Dvorak. Janacek wrote, "Do you know the feeling when someone takes the words from your mouth? This is how I always felt in Dvorak's company. I can interchange his personality and his work. Thus he took melodies from my heart. Such a bond can never be rent on this earth ."(7) Janacek's first opera Sarka (1887 - 1888) employed a romantic theme with a realistic dramatic spirit.

This work is in a traditional vein and links Janacek with Smetana, Dvorak and Fibich.

Music School The Verity of Folk Culture A thirst for art and love of music, inherited from his father and grandfather, propelled Janacek, after completion of his studies at the Teachers' Training Institute, towards a professional study of music as well as towards a thorough and systematic program of self - educaton. While at the Teachers' Training Institute he developed an interest in psychology and art history and he read the works of Helmholtz, Zimmerman, and Durdik. Janacek continued his musical education in Prague at the school of organ (1874 - 1875), in Leipzig at the conservatory (1879 - 1880), and in Vienna (1880). Already in this period of his life Janacek exhibited an independent judgment and manly courage.

Towards the close of the decade of the 1880's Janacek's work took a new direction through his association wih Frantisek Bartos. Bartos was a dedicated student of the folk culture of Moravia and, after Frantisek Susil, Bartos was the most productive collector of Moravian folk songs.

Especially from 1888, when he began to, once again, regularly traverse his native region, Janacek dedicated himself to the study and collection of musical folklore. For twenty - five years, Janacek would wander the countryside searching out folk songs, folk dances and instrumental music.

Shortly before his death Janacek commented on the verity and vitality of the folk song : "Our national songs!

human being -- body, soul, environment, everything, everything.

Whoever grows from our folk song grows to be a complete human being. "(8).

Translator's note: Frantisek Bartos [1837-1906] was a prodigious Moravian ethnographer, dialectologist, and educator. He authored a monumental work on the linguistic dialects of Moravia and with Leos Janacek's help compiled over three and a half thousand fold songs.

In 1891 Janacek, with Martin Zeman, organized a Moravian -Slovak ensemble which performed at the Jubilee Exhibition in Prague. Janacek and Lucie Bakesova directed a performance of Moravian dances and folklore at the National Exhibition in Prague in 1895. Janacek utilized the folk material'gathered on his different field trips with special success in Lasske Tance (Lachian Dances, 1889) and the ballet Rakos Rakoczy (1891).

Besides folk songs, Janacek found inspiration in the melodies and rhythms of human speech. He frequently recorded the melodic cadence of human conversation. From this fascination grew one of the unique characteristics of Janacek's music. He wrote, "Speech? Music as it comes from an instrument or from literature has little truth for me...When someone speaks to me perhaps I didn't understand his words, but from the tone and rhythm of his speech I know at once what the words mean. I know how he feels, whether he tells a lie, if he is upset. If deep within he is weeping, I feel this. The tones and cadences of the speech of men and, generally, of all living creatures, have for me the greatest truth. This, you see, has been one of my needs throughoth my life."(9) The influence of human speech is particularly evident in Janacek's operas which followed Sarka, in the village idyll Pocatek romanu (1894) and the realistic Jeji pastorkyna (1894 1903). Janacek here ruggedly fused dramatic action and feelings of tenderness. Pictures of passion, guilt, ransomed punishment, and purification develop against a backdrop of human events. Jeji pastorkyna was marked by two tragedies in Janacek's life. His daughter Olga died at the time of the completion of the opera. (10) After the Brno premiere in 1904 Janacek fought for twelve bitter years for recognition of this work.

Family Family life brought Janacek, besides happiness and security, also painful wounds which never healed. In 1881 he married Zdenka Schulz, the daughter of the director of the Brno Teachers' Training Institute. Two children were born from this marrige.The son Vladimir died before the age of three and the talented daughter, Olga, on whom Janacek pinned so much of his life's hopes, died at 22.(11) The loss of his children cast a shadow across the remainder of Janacek's life.(12) His wife Zdenka outlived him by ten years.

Through her faith and devotion she sustained him through his disappointments and trying artistic battles.

Russia In addition to his faith in humanity, Janacek found inspiration in a faith in Russia. A sympathy towards the Slavic East, which Janacek inherited from his

native Lachia, was strengthened during his stay at the Augustinian Monastery in Brno. As a student he studied the Russian language.

Disappointed by conditions at the Leipzig conservatory, he considered moving to Petersburg. In 1896 he visited Moscow, Petersburg, and the All - Russian Exhibition in Novgorod.(13) After his return he founded a' Russian Society in Brno. In 1902 he accompanied his daughter Olga to Petersburg where she studied for a period. A collection of Russian books was a part of Janacek's library.

He utilized several Russian themes in his compositions. He set Lermontov's melodramatic Sinn (Death, 1876) to music. He composed Kozacka (1899) for the Slavic Choral Society of Brno.

Throughout his life Janacek was absorbed with a fascination for Russian themes.

Social Themes The poverty of his native region of Lachia awakened in Janacek a sensitivity to social oppression. Social themes first appear in his work at the start of the century. In 1901 he wrote the cantata Otce nas (Our Father). The opera Osud (Fate) was composed between 1903 - 1904. Many autobiographical traits are evident in the character of the composer Zivny, especially a bitter sensitivity to poverty, which Janacek knew first hand. The death of the laborer Frantisek Pavlik, who was killed in an effort to establish a Czech university in Brno, inspired the piano sonata 1. X. 1905 -- Z ulice (The First of October, 1905 -- From the Street). Janacek composed several pieces for male chorus based on the social ballads of Petr Bezruc, including Kantor Halfar (Schoolmaster Hal fa r 906), Marycka Magdonova (1906 - 1907), and Sedm desat tisic (Seventy Thousand , 1909). He based the symphonic poem Sumarovo dite (The Child of Sumar, 1912) on a work by the poet Svatopluk Cech which expresses concern for the impoverished, Janacek composed the cantata Vecne evangelium (The Eternal Gospel, 1914) based on a text

by Jaroslav Vrchlicky which champions a new age of social justice.

Between Two Revolutions Janacek's interest in Russia was to develop further. Between 1905 and 1917 he was occupied with several completed and incomplete works based on Russian themes. In 1908 and 1909 he composed a piece for piano inspired by Tolstoy's novel Kreutzerova sonata (The Kreutzer Sonata) and in 1923 he reworked this piece for string quartet. In 1910 he composed Pohadka (A Tale) based on a theme from Zhukovsky. He intended to compose an opera based on Zive mrtvoly (The Living Corpses, 1916).

At the outbreak of the First World War, Janacek's love for Russia evolved into a faith that Russia would liberate the Czech nation.This hope was expressed in the rhapsody Taras Bulba (1915 - 1919) which is Janacek's celebration of the strength and heroism of the Russian people. (14) The Nation's Struggle and Faith In Its Future Janacek awaited the end of the First World War with a passionate faith in the Czech nation. He expressed his love for the Czech capital of Prague in Hradcanske pisnicky (Hradcany Songs, 1916), based on words by F.S. Prochazka. Janacek here captured the

tragedy of Prague's past and the touching lyrical beauty of the city's hidden corners. Janacek's patriotism is reflected in the opera Vylety pana Broucka na music a do 15. stoleti (Mr.Broucek's Journeys to the Moon and Fifteenth Century, 1908 - 1917).

Written during a period of personal struggles, this work is a merciless satire of cold artistic formality and a criticism of the faults of the Czech character. Janacek perceived the essence of true "Czechness" in the moral strength of the Hussites. He expressed his faith in the immortality of the Czech nation in the symphonic poem Balada blanicka (The Ballad of Blanik Hill, 1920), based on Jaroslav Vrchlicky's poem.

Love Much of Janacek's life can be viewed as a heroic struggle. From the beginning he was forced to battle antagonistic artistic, nationalistic, and social circles. Many of his compositions, however, show the sensitivity of his human emotions.

Love is an important theme in nearly all the operas, as well as in compositions shadowed with lyrical feeling. These include the cantata Amarus (1897), based on a text by Vrchlicky, the song cycle Zapisnik zmizleho (Diary of the Vanquished, 1917 - 1919), the choral work Potulny silenec (The Wandering Madman, 1922), and the string quartet Listy duverne (Letters to the Faithful, 1928).

In Kata Kabanova (1919 - 1921) Janacek again turned to a Russian theme. He envelopes, with a passionate melody, the unfortunate heroine who must pay for a dream of love with death in the currents of the Volga.

Love of Nature The beauty of Janacek's native region nurtured in him a love for nature. As soon as spring arrived each year, Janacek would visit the dense forests of the Brno area. He was fond of visiting the Spilberk and Luzanky areas. With advancing age he was drawn more and more to Hukvaldy.

He journeyed to Strbske Pleso in the Slovakian Tatras and he followed the discoveries at the Demanovska caverns with great interest.

Janacek found music even in nature.

He recorded the melody of waves breaking at the seashore with the same enthusiasm with which he approached human speech. He noted the song of birds and the sounds of his faithful hound Cipera. The climax of natural inspiration in Janacek's work is found in the opera Prihody Lisky Bystrousky (The Cunning Little Vixen, 1921 1923). Here are found impressions from the natural environs of Hukvaldy, Luhacovice, and the forests of Brno. With a pantheistic piety Janacek observes the lives of beasts and finds in them the same psychological elements found with humans -- joy and tragedy, love and death, above which reigns eternal life.

Janacek drew an exuberant juvenescence from nature. This was expressed in his life and in his creative works until the time of his death. In his autobiograp/iy he wrote: "I constantly marvel at the thousands and thousands of expressions of rhythm in the worlds of light, color, sound, and touch. My outlook grows younger through the eternally rhythmic youth of eternally youthful nature. "(15) Janacek did not, however, loose himself in moods.

This he expressed in his characteristic fashion: "I sink in nature, but I db not drown." (16)

Victory Janacek's work was first introduced beyond his native land in 1905 with performances of the choral works Dez vis and Klekanica (The Evening Witch) by the Moravian Teachers' Choir. In 1907 Janacek dedicated Marycka Magdonova to the founder of the Moravian Teachers' Choir, Ferdinand Vach, and the choir performed the work in Paris in 1908. The performance was successfully repeated in Petersburg in 1913. From that time the Moravian Teachers' Choir performed all of Janacek's choral works and through its unique execution won recognition for Janacek throughout Europe and paved the way for his later foreign success.(17) Janacek won a decisive victory in his artistic battles with the work Jeji pastorkyna. After a successful Prague premiere in 1916, Jeji pastorkyna was performed in Vienna in 1918 and in Berlin in 1924. Thus was the door opened for Janacek to the whole world. Jeji pastorkyna was received with enthusiasm in New York in 1924 and was performed in Janacek's lifetime in most of the great German opera houses. In the last ten years of his life Janacek participated in various foreign music festivals and his compositions were recognized by critics the world over.

Works Dedicated to the Common Man Much of Janacek's creativity can be viewed in light of his origin among the common folk. The uniqueness of much of his work lies in its foundation upon folk songs and speech patterns.

As with other great artists, towards the close of his life he simplified his artistic phrasing and sought to address himself directly to the common man. This he expressed in 1926 in Hukvaldy at the unveiling of a plaque at his former school. "1 think that I have been most successful in expressing the outlook of the common man in my most recent work, Symfonietta. I would like to journey further along this course...My lastest creative season is a new gallop of a soul which has settled all its accounts with the rest of the world and desires only to be as close as possible to the soul of the common Czech."(18) His desire to draw closer to mankind led Janacek to the composition of the opera, Vec Makropulos (The Makropoulos Case, 1923 - 1925).

Despite a setting in an international megapolis and philosophical overtones which express a courageous rapprochement with the capriciousness of life, the work remains simple and down - to - earth.

From this time Janacek increasingly devoted himself to compositions inspired by the melodies of human speech. At 70, Janacek viewed the world with a tranquil smile and a clear folk humor surfaced in his work. This is seen in the sextet for wind instruments, Mladi (Youth, 1924), Concertina (19), 1925; Symfonietta (20), 1926; Capriccio, 1926; and the childishly naive Rikadly (Nursery Rhymes, 1927).

Spartakiadni kaleidoskop

The most useful term is "dobrSr den". Its common usage is relatively new, but it has almost replaced "dobre odpoledne" meaning "good afternoon" and has been making inroads in replacing even "dobre rano" or "dobre jitro". "DobrS, den" has replaced also quite a few overly polite greetings such as "poklona, ma ticta, rukulibam, etc." Good riddance. *** "Dobre rano" is used more in the country, while "dobre jitro" is more common in the cities. "Dobre jitro" is becoming more and more common.

Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrYtro", which is strictly colloquial.

"Sbohem" has a religious origin.

Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or Jdete) s Bohem". "Jdi" is singular, while "Jdete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God"). The religious meaning has been slowly lost

Rok 1985 je pro eeskoslovenskou telovjrchovu rokem opravdu velmi vjrznamnSrm. V/dye se v nem kona Ceskoslovenska spartakiada 1985.

Spartakiadni vystoupeni maji v Ceskoslovensku velkou tradici. Prvni vetejne cvieeni se konalo v Praze v roce 1862 a od roku 1882 byly pravidelne potadany vgesokolske slety. PtinVrin ptedchildcem dne gnich spartakiad byla vgak a. vetejna vystoupeni, ktera zorganizovala Federace delnickSrch a teloqchovnjrch jednot. Prvni vystoupeni tohoto druhu, nazvane podle vudce povstani fims14ch otroku Spartaka spartakiadou, se konalo v Praze v roce 1921.

Po Unoru 1948 sjednocend eeskoslovenska telovSrchova navazala na einnost Federace a k 10. vYroei osvobozeni Ceskoslovenska Sovetskou armadou byla v roce 1955 uspofadana 1. celostatrn spartakiada. Od to doby se konajI pravidelne kaidY patSr rok v Praze na Strahovskem stadione.
