As temperatures dr,, heating bills climb. But you can limit the size of those bills by using energy more efficiently in your home.

According to the Energy Department, 70 percent of residential energy expenditures goes for heating and cooling, 20 percent for heating water and the remaining 10 percent for lighting, cooking and operating small applicances. To help stretch these funds: Set up an energy budget similar to the overall family budget. Discuss energy priorities with the family. Learn to make trade - offs. For example, during cold spells, when heating costs soar, compensate by minimizing use of lights, radios and television sets. Learn to monitor energy consumption by reading electric and gas meters.

Lowering the thermostat setting on the water heater from the standard 140 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit will provide adequate hot water for most families and reduce the water heater's energy use by 18 percent.

As much as one - third of winter heating and summer cooling bills may be caused by air leaks. Closing drapes at night will cut down on drafts.

Caulking and weatherstripping windows and doors can save up to 10 percent on fuel bills. To save even more, consider installing storm windows and thermal - lined drapieries.

An additional 20 to 30 percent may be saved by installing insulation. Just how much you need depends on the climate where you live. Be sure to put in insulation thick enough to provide the proper resistance to heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.

In the winter, furnace thermostats should be set at 65 degrees during the day and lowered at night. This can be done manually or with an automatic setback device that costs about $75.

You may be able to claim a one - time, 15 percent tax credit;on any amount up to $2,000 spent to install many of these products. The maximum credit is $300. *** More than 50,000 shots of a Salk type polio vaccine may have lost their potency, making it advisable for thousands of recipients to get nem vaccinations, warns the Food anc Drug Administration. People who received polio vaccinations by injection -- a relatively small number -after May of 1983 are urged to contact a doctor. Injections are used mainly for children wih effective immune systems. There is no problem with the more common oral, or Sabin, vaccine. ***

Much of the hysteria concerning herpes among schoolchildren is caused by confusion over the various kinds of herpes, says the University of Southern California School of Medicine. The most common herpes is Type 1, the kind that usually causes cold sores and other blisters on the body. It has been in the classroom for years. Many school children have already been infected and are immune. ***

Drivers may want to keep a keen eye on the kind of gasoline they put into their cars, particularly if the car is still under warranty. Many service stations are selling gasoline that contains methanol--an additive also known as wood alcohol that raises the fuel's octane rating. Methanol is highly corrosive to auto engines unless it is blended with other additives. As a result, some manufacturers won't honor warranties of cars in which it has been used. *** Of the nation's 54 million cigarette smokers, 62 percent have made at least one serious effort to quit smoking-without success. Many would be willing to try a stop - smoking program. But what kind? There are books, cassettes, chewing gum, sedatives, hypnosis, aversion therapy, five - day plans and group methods, among others. A new booklet, 'How to Chose a Stop - Smoking Program, attempts to shed some light on these techniques. Approximatley 48 percent of all cancer patients are alive five years after diagnosis and are considered clinically cured.

So much is based on a positive attitude. But it's hard to be strong in a world where newspapers emphasize the horror stories, where the well meaning can cause the most damage (a nurse gave me harrowing "information"), and where some people are so afraid they might "catch" cancer that once - beloved friends back off at parties.

Is there hope for those of us who attempt to have a normal social life?

Experience has made us skeptical. Yet as more of us survive, perhaps the public will begin to rid itself of its misconceptions.

Jeff Blatnick had determined that his only realistic Olympic prospects lay in the weak Greco - Roman field. Sure enough, he qualified for the 1980 Olympic team that stayed home from Moscow, and he won national AAU titles in 1980 and '81.

At Springfield, Blatnick had been a freestyle champion in wrestling and a starter at offensive tackle in football.

He had this deep seated motivation, even during football season, when he was practicing hours every afternoon, he would still wrestle an hour a day.

He had unlimited energy. He could cope with things.

At no time did the doctors tell him his Olympic career was in danger. But his 1984 Olympic chances certainly were.

The illness cost Blatnick a year of crucial competition. In September of 1982, he underwent major surgery to remove his spleen and appendix. For several weeks thereafter, he underwent chemotherapy. He became acutely susceptible to colds and flu, and devoleped severe rashes. Running a mile, once an afterthought, now was an ordeal.

Blatnick got the ultimate medal, but not without suspense. He stunned the top wrestler, pinning his opponent of Yugoslavia in his opening match. But he lost his second match, then had to sweat out several bouts involving other wrestlers before he knew he would have enough points to make the final.

Once there, he dominated another opponent from Sweden, for the gold.

And an uncharacteristic burst of feelings..

Something sets me back and I bounce back harder than ever. Higher than ever, too.

Conversational Czech Courses At TJC The Continuing Education Division of Temple Junior College is offering two Conversational Czech language courses which will start soon.

Conversational Czech I is for beginners and will start on Thursday, January 31st. It will meet for ten sessions through April 11, 1985.

Conversational Czech II is for persons who have some background in Czech and will start on Tuesday, January 29th. It will meet for ten sessions through April 9, 1985.

Each class will meet from 7 to 10 p.m. in Room 302 of the Newton Science Building. The cost of each course is $34.

Dennis Veselka is accepting the $500 SPJST Scholarship which is being presented by Lodge 142 President Mary Ann Kieschnick.

The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas presents for the first time a Czech Heritage Festival on Saturday, March 2, 1985 at the Corpus Christi Bayfront Plaza Exhibit Hall from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; expect to be entertained all day by Czech choral groups, folk dancers, Sokol gymnasts and two Czech bands playing polka and waltz music.

Everyone will have an opportunity to examine cultural displays and browse through booths offering Czech kolache, Czech music selections, Czech cookbooks and much, much more.

In addition to the day's festivities, a "Parade of Costumes" precedes an evening of oldtime dance music until midnight; the admission will be $2.

24 Holds Installation Ceremonies

News Brief Daryl Frank, 13, son of Brother and Sister Willie Helona of Abbott, passed away in a local hospital, January 21st.

He was a seventh grader at Ross Middle School, was in the Junior High Band, was a member of SPJST Lodge 6 of Cottonwood, member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and CCD Class. Services were held January 23 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Msgr. George Doskocil officiating.

Interment was in the St. Mary's Cemetery in West. His father is a sales representative.

Dear Readers: Our January meeting was called to order by President David Vanicek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flagbearers Harold Vanicek, Jr. and Rodney Posvar.

We had several guests at our meeting; they were VP Bernie Gebala, Leonard Mikeska, Sid Pokladnik, Willie. E. Kohutek and Jerry Prochazka.

Brother Bernie Gebala discussed, with the members, the new direct

billing for our insurance policies for each local lodge. During our meeting we decided to go to direct billing and eliminated the financial secretary.

District II Director Willie Kohutek installed the 1985 lodge officers and Board of Trustees at the meeting. We want to thank Brother Willie for helping make this a special occasion for us.

Those on the sick list are Craig Waits and Otto Hanus. We wish both of you a speedy recovery.

Birthday celebrants are Harold Vanicek and Harold Vanicek, Jr., Shirley Waits, Bernie Gebala and Joe Haisler.

New member Penny Coats was added to our lodge. Welcome, Penny, hope to see you around soon.

A special thank you to a group of fantastic decorators; namely, Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska, Pam Mikeska, Keith Mikeska, LaVerne and Jerry Cabla, Jr., Arleen and Lynn Tschoerner, and Louise and Jerry Zavodny. The hall looked really nice for our New Year's Eve celebration; thanks, again!

East Bernard To Meet Dear Members: The lodge will hold its monthly meeting February 3 at 2 p.m., in the lodge hall. There will be a report on items discussed in the January meeting plus some additional items on the agenda along with those that are regularly covered.

There will be the "After the Meeting" meeting and "Gathering of the Clan" around the coffee pot and buffet lunch for the "Kaffeeklatsch."

The January 6 meeting was held Sunday for the first time in many years. All reports were accepted as given. A rather lengthy discussion was held on one piece of lodge business that ended up with the appropriate motion being passed. Two new members were approved and added to the roster.

Brother Anton Kelner, Jr. won the door prize.

Conversation and the consumption of liquid refreshments and food were the order of the day for the after the neeting "Kaffeeklatsch." Sisters Haverda, Janik, Srubar, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval enhanced the buffet lunch with their generous donations of food to make everything a success. Most all who partook stayed to help with the clean up. The committee wishes to extend its most grateful thanks to those who assisted.

At this writing, Brother Kelner, our financial secretary, was, again, in and out of the hospital and is recovering from the additional surgery he had to have. Sister Anne Foytik is going into the hospital, for some surgery of unknown nature, the week of the 21st and a speedy recovery is wished.

Lodge 35 Appoints Committees Dear Members: On January 13, the meeting at Elk was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flagbearer Dawn Pavelka.

We welcomed our visitors, Lillie Matus and Cary Grayson.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Rose Mary Banik.

Treasurer Eddie Banik gave his report.

All chairpersons made good reports.

Youth Leader Louise Burney also made her report and then asked for all who had birthdays in January to come forward. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Joe Tepe and Helen Pospisil.

The following committee members were appointed: Grievance -- Ernest Banik, Fred Kubitza, Joe Tepe, Albert Banik and James Pavelka.

Sunshine -- Velma Clemons, Edna Tepe and Ruby Pavelka.

Resolutions -- Elizabeth Kubitza, Albert Banik and Rose Mary Banik.

Special Entertainment -- Barbara Pavelka, Rose Mary Banik and Marilyn Banik.

It was voted on to have the District III meeting, April 21st.

We heard that Louis and Betty Kunkel were both under the weather; I hope both are feeling better. Lloyd Steinke had surgery, but is at home doing fine.

Door prizes were won by: Youth -Robin Breitkreutz; and adult -- Inez Breitkreutz.

After the meeting, delicious chili was served; the ingredients were donated by Haskell Fife, our security guard, and Sister Rose Mary Banik cooked the chili. The members would like to thank both of them. Everyone sure did enjoy it since it was a cold Sunday.

Members, here is a little reminder: This is 1985 so make it a pleasant one and let us work together. Our next Lodge 35 meeting will be at 3 p.m.

February 10th; come out and have an enjoyable afternoon.

Lodge 40 Makes Donations Dear Vestnik Readers: The monthly meeting of the El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 was held at 7:30 p.m. January 16, 1985.

President James Kulcak began the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a minute of silent prayer.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers and all were present.

The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as written in the Vestnik.

President Kulcak received letters of thanks from the El Campo 100 Club and the SPJST Scholarship of Temple for donatons in memory of Mary Bacak, Vinc Dybala, Emilie Berger Orsak and Frank Orsak, Jr. Treasurer Leona Macha gave the treasurer's report and accounting of all bills paid.

Financial Secretary Bill Goerig reported that he received an 8 percent premium refund from Temple.

It was reported that the New Year's Eve dance was a great success and next year's dance is already scheduled; also

a thants was expressed to all the bar helpers and kitchen helpers for all the work they've done. It wobld be impossible to operate without you!

Due to the next meeting falling on Ash Wednesday, the date was changed to Monday, February 20, following bingo, sincemore people could attend.

Sunday, March 10, the LeeRoy Matocha band is scheduled to play at our hall, from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Be sure to mark your calendar.

Also be sure to notice the lighting in the parking lot; all that bright light is wonderful.

You are asked to please come out and represent your lodge at the District VI meeting to be held March 24 in Moravia.

Refreshments were served following the meeting. Sister Margie Kulcak was the lucky winner of the door prize.

Lodge 49 To Hold Meeting & Program Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 49 will hold its meeting February 6, 1985 at the local lodge hall in Rowena. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. After the meeting is concluded, a program on Child Abuse and Neglect will be given.

All members from the local lodge are urged to attend . The general public is also welcome to attend. The program will begin about 7:30 p.m. with a film and refreshments will be served following the film presentation.

Lodge 80 Installation Of Officers Dear Members: Our first lodge meeting of 1985 was called to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 6 by President Bohac.

All members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the president asked the members to remain standing for a minute in silent tribute to our deceased brother member, C.R. (Buster) Hempel, who passed away Wednesday, December 26, 1984.

After the reading of our November meeting minutes by Secretary Latham, the newly - elected officers were installed by Honorary President Lodge 80 Joe Barabas, Jr. The following officers will have charge of Lodge 80 for 1985; namely, President -- D. I. Bohac, Vice President Adell Horelica, Secretary - Treasurer Glen Latham, Financial Secretary Glenda Liles, and Reporter Joe Barabas, Jr., who were all re - elected. A round of applause was given to the outgoing Vice President Terry Bertrand who served us as vice president for several years.

For correspondence, we had a thank you card from the Robt. (Bobby) Gersbach family for the flowers sent for his funeral.

The members voted in favor of accepting two new members to our lodge; namely, Michael Dewbre and Matthew Dewbre. We welcome you!

I am sure that some of you members made some New Year's resolutions and I hope that one of them was to try to come to our SPJST meetings. The officers and members would like to look at some new faces at the meetings; come out and see what we are doing at Lodge 80 in Holland.

I would like to mention that we are sponsoring a polka and waltz dance at our lodge hall at Holland Sunday, February 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. with music by Eddie Ray and The Polka Dots. The new year started with some very cold weather with a lot of snow in our area; and, then January 13th we really had a snow storm. While I am writing this we had one of those Siberian cold fronts come howling our way and my thermometer shows 12 degrees this morning (January 21st).

Lodge 81 Plans Activities Dear Members: The January 13th meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek at 3 p.m.

Mary Matcek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call showed all officers present and all gave good reports.

We were very happy to have Victor Werner back. He has been recuperating after a knee surgery for a couple of months. He thanked everyone for the cards and visits.

Alfred Franklin Becan was accepted into our lodge as a new member; welcome Alfred and we invite you to come to our lodge functions.

We voted to have our annual chili supper February 12, 1985; serving will begin at 5 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Needville. Ladies are asked to bring pastries.

The monthly single dance will be held February 25th. All the single ones come out and join the fun, couples are welcome, too.

Saturday, February 16, the Vrazels will play for your dancing to start the celebration. Then Sunday it's a day of continued fun and celebration.

To commemorate this day, the lodge had donated (for a "sale") a 55 carat round white diamond set in a pendant mounting; certified appraisal value is $1,500. Tickets are being sold by the members. Let's help this celebration by being present and participate in the day's activities.

News From Houston Lodge 88 The monthly meeting at Lodge No. 88 was well - attended even if the weather was cold. District V Director Jerry Prochazka reported from the Home Office, giving us all kinds of facts and figures. Direct billing was an interesting item for the membership and it was decided to look into this matter and discuss it further at our next meeting.

President Jerry Ermis announced the committees for 1985. He thanked the members who accepted this responsibility.

First Vice President Clara Broz reminded us that according to our Rules and Regulations, Article VII, Section 1(b): All committee members must attend a majority of the regular monthly meetings. You cannot be a good committee person if you don't know what's happening at your lodge, so the bottom line is: "We'll see you there!"

Friday, February 8, the Russ Morgan Orchestra will play in the Chandelier Ballroom. This is a dress code dance and advance tickets are on sale in the lodge office at $10 per ticket. Remember to buy your tickets at least a week in advance to hold your table reservation.

February 10 is our 20th anniversary celebration and most of the committees have planned projects for that day. The Men's Club members all

have rick e t s for sale for their activity and Vice President Clara Broz asks that if you have donations. for her project that you leave them in the lodge office for her. This is not a country store booth this time so she doesn't need food items. Call her if you need further information.

Birthday Club President Pearl Hanka and her Birthday Club Sisters will have their usual pastry booth. It's not often that you can find such an array of homemade cakes and pies.

Take advantage of this opportunity.

The dinner will consist of braised beef, rice and gravy, and plenty more.

Kitchen Chairperson Annie Vala with other Henry Kite and all their helpers will make sure you don't go away hungry. ingo will start at 2 p.m. and the dance begins at 5 p.m. with Bobby Jones. Dance tickets for this dance will be only $2 per ticket so come and have fun at this bargain price.

Eddie and Jeff Skeets Orchestra was in Houston January 12 and played at Lodge 88. They were on a tour from Iowa and they all thought our little bit of ice and snow was fun. Laura and Royal Warnasch, John and Palmae Hilsher, Carol Ann Bruce, and Herman Liebscher joined the tour that week and they went to the Valley where the orchestra had engagements through Sunday. The Eddie Skeets Orchestra played ballroom music and it was really good music. He announced that type of music is requested more in his area so they have changed over to the style of music.

Evelyn Antrich with Milert, Bennie and Stacy Kocich hosted this dance for the Entertainment Committee and Lydia Hendrick along with John and Clara Broz greeted the dancers for the Vrazel Band, January 19th.

One of our dear sisters passed away Sunday, January 13th. Gesalla Huber leaves behind her husband Herbert; three sons, Donald, Harvey and J.W. Huber; seven grandchildren, and two sisters; one being Annabell Veit, a member of Lodge 88. Sister Huber will be greatly missed as "Mama" always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. We'll miss her and her family will miss her even more. Our sympathy to her family. We all loved her. May she rest in peace!

Lodge 133 Holds January Meeting Dear Members: San Antonio Lodge 133 held their regular meeting at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers Street. The attendance wasn't as good as we would have liked it to be, but, due to the cold weather and the Super Bowl game, we still had twenty - two members present. We appreciate all who came to the meeting.

Our meeting was opened at 2:15 p.m. with our new President Anthony Tricilek leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also remembering our departed loved ones with a moment of silence.

Roll call of officers revealed that all were present with the exception of Vice President Bill Mares who was on the sick list.

President Tricilek asked that the minutes of the previous meeting be read. Secretary Netek read the minutes which were accepted as read.

Happy Birthday wishes were recognized to Lodge 133 members [L to 7]: Ar thony Tricilek, Evelyn Matula, Joe Spacek, Frances Schmicek, Frances Konec.. and Dominic Netek.

The treasurer's report was given by our new treasurer, Cathy Uribe, which was also accepted as read.

President Tricilek appointed Brother Rohan as the flag bearer for this particular meeting due to the absence of Brother Kalmus.

President Tricilek asked for the Auditing Committee to give their report. Chairman of the committee, Brother Kleprlik, gave the report. He reported that the books were in excellent condition, and that our past treasurer, Sister Viola Mazac, is to be commended for the fine work that she has done for the past twenty - two years. Brother Tricilek thanked the committee for their fine work.

Sister Grace Rohan gave the report on the Social Committee. She mentioned that refreshments will be served after the meeting, and thanked everyone for bringing the many dishes.

Entertainment chairman, Sister Alma Tricilek, reported that the entertainment fund was in good condition, and spoke on the many donations made by members.

Sister Kleprlik gave the report on the members' anniversary dates; she reported that Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Popp will be celebrating their 7th wedding anniversary this week.

Publication Committee member Emil Matula did not have a report at this time, but that there will be a meeting in Temple sometime in March.

Sick Report: Sister Dorothy Valka and Sister Stella Mares are restricted to their homes, and we hope that they will be with us soon.

President Tricilek appointed an Application Committee. An application for membership was received on Karen Lynette Popp.

Members on the committee were Chairman Emil Rohan, Frances Schmicek and Mary Popp. The committee recommended to accept the application; the members accepted their recommendation.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the following members, Frances Schmicek, Evelyn Matula, Anthony Tricilek, Joe Spacek, Frances Konecny and D. Netek.

Attendance prizes were won by Cathy Uribe, 1st; Frances Schmicek, 2nd; Alvin Schmicek, 3rd; and Agnes Popp, 4th. The members enjoyed refreshments after the meeting.

A VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS: The meeting in March will be the 24th,

which will be the fourth Sunday of the month.

Austin Lodge 155 News A fine representation of members assembled in the dining room of the Sirloin Stockade, 8828 Research Blvd., December 7 for our Christmas supper and a short meeting.

Honored guests were our Supreme Lodge President, Brother Howard Leshikar, and our District II Director, Brother Willie E. Kohutek, and Mrs. Kohutek.

Introduction of guests occurred and our President, Alice Prasatik, thanked everyone for coming to join in the holiday fellowship.

Our Secretary, Raymond Prasatik, gave a brief history of our Lodge 155 which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in March 1985.

Our treasurer, Brother John Hejl, made a distribution of checks to official members for their services and to various charities, one of which he handed to Brother Howard, payable to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor to be personally delivered.

The installation ceremony of officers for 1985 was conducted by Brother Howard Leshikar, assisted by Brother Willie Kohutek. They are as follow:. Honorary President Mrs. Lillie K. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, Holy Cross Hospital Cancer Fund, Salvation Army Shoe Fund, and letters from Supreme Lodge referring to our contributions as commendable, also letter explaining the position of a "director of fraternal affairs," and one explaining the annual 8 percent refund check. A letter from members Brian and Mary Mikeska was read with the good news that son Jeffrey is doing well, and thanking us for our concern.

The major topic of discussion related to the forthcoming special event in March of celebrating our 50th anniversary of SPJST No. 155 in AUSTIN was held. Preliminary and alternate plans were proposed.

Everyone's full cooperation is requested. Sharon Gavin volunteered to compile and type an up - to - date directory of members with addresses and phone numbers.

After the meeting, our gracious hostess,Carol Staha iassisted by hubby, John, served us a surprise early supper of delicious homemade hot tamales, beans, cheese and many Christmas pastries, along with appropriate drinks.

As of this writing, our member, Meteor Frnka (81 years), passed away.

He was a member of SPJST for 60 years and well - known for his civic work in Austin.

Our Saturday night dances are doing real well and we hope they continue.

I also want to correct something I had written in the last letter to the Vestnik about Sister Rena Ordener.

She didn't lose her legs to cancer but for some other reason; sorry, John.

Right now, we here on the Gulf Coast are involved in the "big chill."

The cold spell what it will hurt most are vegetable gardens, wildlife, unprotected pets, water pipes, etc. So far it didn't get as cold as predicted and I know most people are glad. (I've heard that without real cold weather in wintertime bugs would take over, but with cold weather in late December 1983, it looked like we had as many bugs in 1984 as any other years with mild winters and it looks like the battle with bugs is being won by them!)

This past week we lost a good member, Mrs. Irene Ingraham from Lodge 172. We offer our sympathy to the family.

Many of us from Lodge 172 also knew Mrs. Gesalla Huber, wife of Herbert Huber, who passed away recently. We also extend our sympathy to her family. The Hubers were good supporters of the SPJST, their lodge home and ours, too.

Mrs. Ingraham was also a good supporter of our Lpdge 172.

Entertainment Committee consists of Bill Hutka, Otis Beck and Larry Bland. Reporter and activity coordinator is Jackie Beck. The trustees also decided that no one working on bingo night would be allowed to play bingo.

The Auditing Committee reported that all books were in order except bingo which had not been audited.

Othena Jezek gave a year's report on the kitchen and, as in the past, she had a good report.

Two new members, Donald C. Rash and Minnie Barker, were accepted.

Othena Jezek gave the sunshine report for Libbie Bartek; she sent a sympathy card to Helen Bland.

Libbie Bartek was absent from the meeting and her smiling face is always missed when she isn't in attendance.

Past President Louis Driska thanked Anne Tomastik, Juanita Ramm, Helen Bland and Billie Lueck for helping sell New Year's Eve tickets. President Hutka went right into appointing committees and, in turn, appointed Othena Jezek and Jackie Beck. Vice.

President Otis Beck appointed Louis Driska to the Audit Committee. The Rules & Regulations Committee consists of Harry Barker, Phil Wedock and Helen Bland. Libbie Bartek is on the Sunshine Committee.

President Hutka felt that our Rules and Regulations should be looked into and some altering and changing be done. He also appointed Walter Jezek, Jerry Tomastik, and Larry Bland to an Anniversary Celebration Committee for the hall to be held in the spring of our tenth anniversary which was held in December of 1984.

Helen Bland was accepted as a sales representative.

Leftover turkey and dressing will be served after the February 13th meeting. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert.

Mrs. Laura Min near from the First House spoke to the members and came to personally thank the lodge for the many things the children had been able to have from our contributions. Since it was getting late, other business was tabled until next month. A motion was made to adjourn at 9:10 p.m.

We hope bingo will be resumed next week, there are so many rules to abide by, hopefully, for a bigger and better year.

Latest News From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: The first regular dance of 1985 was a big success despite the cold front that dropped the temperature from 67 degrees to 26 degrees by midnight. The music by LAST CALL was grand. If you missed this dance you missed a very good time, but the band will be back at Lodge 183 Saturday, April 20th. The lodge will have a special dance with music by ERNIE KUCERA from Nebraska, so all of you polka fans gather all your friends. ; neighbors and relatives and let's have a big crowd and dance to the music of one of the best polka bands in the country because they do not make it to Texas very often.

Maybe you have heard that most men need two women in their lives: a secretary to take things down and a wife to pick everything up. Also a women's final decision is not necessarily the same as the one she makes later.

Friendship Club

Of Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: As most of you know, the cold wave on New Year's Day produced some ice and snow. which caused the club to postpone its meeting January 2nd.

Members, please bear in mind, if the weather is icy, we will not have a February 6 meeting. Those in our area know, as in the past, we get a wave of bad weather during the Fat Stock Show which will be in progress about the same time.

Since our last meeting in December, it is with regret that I report the passing away of two of our members.

Mr. Louis Belota, age 89, passed away January 6th, and Anne Johnson Foster, age 39, passed away January 7th.

We express our sincere condolences to the families of these two members.

They will be missed by so many who knew them, I wish to thank the members who brought food and helped serve dinner at the St.Thomas parish hall for both funerals.

We would also like to express our condolences to our friend, Mr. Joe Baleja, on the loss of his wife, Stella.

Services were held in the State Room at Greenwood Funeral Home in Ft.Worth at 10 a.m. Friday, January 11th. Mr. Baleja is in the Apple Tree Nursing Center in Dallas.

The weather might have put a damper on some folks planning to attend the Math Sladky Polka Mass and dance at the Pilot Point, Texas parish center, Janauary 13th, but, from the full house and the toe tapping music with laughter and camaraderie, one would never know how cold it was outdoors.

Most of us were impressed with the Center as the floor plan is patterned after the SPJST Lodge No. 25 in Ennis with seating capacity of about 500 people. The hospitality at the Center was gracious and it is difficult to

mentiOrt. all the people by name. I do now know it is Kubala country, but all the ladies who we met wee very generous with their delicious kolache.

Our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Heitzman for making this occasion possible.

Our final thanks to Alene and Al Kercho for the $50 contribution to our club. The money will be used for a worthy cause.

He, along with his parents, Raymond and Carol Faraizl, are members of SPJST Lodge 84 in Dallas.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editors, Reporters & News Directors, The Texas Department of Health wishes to alert all print and broadcast media personnel that in upcoming months its Bureau of Maternal and Child Health will launch a statewide public information campaign on behalf of mothers - to - be and their babies. The campaign's aim is to teach the public the importance of prenatal and newborn care, and to underscore the need for every mother to take care of herself, and therefore her baby, with medical supervision beginning early in the pregnancy.

The general public may not be aware that, for example, as many as one third of Texas' mothers fail to seek medical attention in the first trimester (three months) of pregnancy when health problems can best be identified and corrected with the least risk and expense.

Enclosed is the department's Fact Sheet on prenatal care in Texas, our latest news release on the issue, and sample public service announcements for broadcast media.

them in that year. Thirty percent (about 90,000 ) of those births were to women who were "medically needy."

While . only about 8 percent of infants in the U.S. were born in Texas, the state accounted for some 17.5 of the nation's out - of - hospital births.

Texas' infant mortality rate, at 11 per 1,000 live births, exceeds that of the national average; and the nation's average is worse than those of 15 other developed countries.

Infants die at a greater rate than any other age category up to age 60. In 1983, more than 3,200 Texan infants died, two - thirds of whom were less than 28 days old. These neonatal deaths stemmed from birth defects, respiratory disease syndrome, prematurity, illness caused by maternal complications, and low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds). Infant low birth weights occur in almost 7 percent of all the state's births and are closely related to alcohol and cigarette use by the mother.

Proper prenatal care greatly improves the outcome of pregnancy, especially regarding prematurity and low birth weights, yet only about two thirds of Texas' pregnant women sought prenatal care in their first trimesters last year. • Delaying prenatal care and therefore allowing potential problems to continue to develop has serious consequences for the health of mothers and babies alike. Minor health problems, if neglected, can become major disorders requiring extensive care.

At the beginning of pregnancy, many women fail to realize the importance of seeking medical help to ensure a healthy outcome for both mother and baby. Prenatal care, begun as early in the pregnancy as possible, is the best way an expectant mother can avoid some complications brought on by neglect or ignorance of her own and her baby's health.

Lodge 13 Dime Box Youth Activities Dear Members, The December meeting was called to order December 16, 1984 by Chelli Fritz.

Flag Bearer Susan Spacek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was then called; we had twenty - five members and six social members present.

All the reports were read and approved as read.

We express thanks to Mr. Sonny Spacek and Bill Turner for pulling the trailers at the hayride, to Mr.Woodrow Spacek for letting us use the spookhouse and to Mr. Rhiney Spacek for letting us use his trailers for the hayride. We also thank Mr. John Mikulin for playing his guitar at the program at the adult meeting.

The birthday celebrants for December were Andrea Blaha, Jason laha, Barry Gold and Bo Spacek. The meeting was then motioned to be adjourned by Susan Spacek and it was seconded by Trudy Krenek.

After the meeting we had a Christmas Party and we exchanged gifts, also sat on Santa's lap. We thanl.

Lodge 186 Caldwell Youth Club News Dear Readers, Our youth club held its monthly meeting January 13, 1985 at our regular time, 1:30 p.m.

President Leigh Ann Clark called the meeting to order. We discussed having a Valentine's Party for the Caldwell youth with the members inviting guests February 10 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Our new youth club leader, Mrs. Linda Cannon, suggested we have the party and that all the members will prepare and furnish the refreshments.

This will be a dance with the music being furnished by the records that the members will bring.

Sister Vavra was born October 24, 1900, in Burleson County to the late Martin Hlavaty and Rosie Cepcar Hlavaty.

She was a lifetime resident of Burleson County. She was married to John Walter Vavra November 11, 1919 and made their home in the New Tabor community. He preceded her in death October 3, 1980.

Sister Vavra was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church, the Church Christian Sisters and of this lodge.

Survivors include one son, Andrew J.Vavra, Sr. who is the president of Lodge No. 17; and a daughter, Mrs. Ernest (Lillian) Barta of Bryan. Also surviving her are six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosalie Pechal of Temple.

Funeral services were held August 2 in the New Tabor Brethren Church with the Rev. Albert Michalik and the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating.

Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Ben F. Trcalek, John B. Trcalek, Andrew J. Vavra, Jr., Thomas Miller, Alvin E. Vavra and Daniel Hejl.

Sister Hattie Rose was reared in the Temple area and graduated from the Temple High School. She had worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana as a clerical worker before moving to Temple in 1970.

Sister Lines worked at Fort Hood and later as cashier at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Center in Temple until her retirement. After retiring from government employment, she was a real estate broker in Temple.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Sister Lines was preceded in death by her father, Charles Mikulas,in 1977.

Survivors include her mother, Hattie Frances Mikulas of Temple; one sister, Lanette Quinn of Copperas Cove; and several nieces and nephews.

Brother John Collins Ginn, Sr., was born September 17, 1932 in Richardson to Ellis Ray and Merle Cook Ginn. He attended George West High School and Southwest Texas University in San Marcos.

He was united in marriage with Margie Hamm on October 18, 1952 in Beeville. He along with his family moved to Schulenburg in 1962.

Brother Ginn was then employed by Oakridge Smokehouse and then at Victor Stanzel Company for ten years.

He was Schulenburg agent for Red Arrow Freight Lines and Herder Truck Lines.

He was named vice president of the First National Bank of Schulenburg in March 1980 and promoted to senior vice president in April 1981, and in 1982 he became president of the bank.

He lived in Schulenburg for the past 22 years.

Brother Ginn was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lions Club, Colorado Valley Shrine Club, Lions Lodge No. 195, Arabia Temple Scottish Rite, Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, South Central Texas Bankers Association, Civic Center Advisory Board, Industrial Foundation and Youens Memorial Hospital Board, and a good member of our SPJST Lodge No. 19 at Velehrad. He just became a paidup member not too long ago before his death.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

December 31 at the Schwenke Baumgarten Funeral Chapel, with interment in the City Cemetery with the Rev. Tim Edwards, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Schulenburg, officiating and also Dr. B.C. Brown co - officiating.

Pallbearers were Tommy Brown, Ira Syler, Dan Taber, Bob Walker, Kenneth Banks and Dr. Norman DeRuiter.

Features "They Died, So We Could Live" It was a cold dreary day December 17, 1944 at an airport in Exeter, England, where the B24 - J Liberator American bomber took off on a mission to help destroy Hitler's Nazi Germany. At this time I was stationed in Exeter for three years and saw many, many air strikes take off. Many returned with the brave airmen wounded or dead. The wounded to be hospitalized and treated and returned to combat or returned home for discharge.

It was June 1984, forty years after WW II, near Stary Jicin in Moravia, Czechoslovakia, at Palacov, I visited a WW II memorial, erected by the Czech people to commemorate the American airmen when their American B24 -J Liberator was shot down by German anti - craft. The inscription read: "Honoring their remembrance, here fell, on December 17, 1944, four airmen from USA. They died, so we could live. Second Lt. Ivy L. Killian, bombardier from Missouri; Second Lt. Harboard P. Jerome Sugg, navigator from Oklahoma; Sgt. Julius G. Fajkus, gunner from Texas; and Staff Sgt. Jacob Herman III, gunner from Massachusetts."

I was told by a relative the airmen who parachuted from the Liberator were captured by the Germans and, with their hands bound behind them, under guard, marched to German headquarters.

The site of the memorial is an open barley field on a less -traveled road.

The marker is very impressive with a propeller and cockpit, and flowers planted and also flowers in vases.

Against the marker were fragments of steel pieces and shell cartridges, still found as the farmers plow the fields. I brought home a souvenir shell cartridge. The erection of the marker was put up, out of the goodness of the local Czech people, and not by order from the government, as the Russian memorials are. Only willingly by the people of their warm feeling and open hearts for these American airmen who tried to help the Czechs win their freedom from the Germans.

A few weeks before my visit, I was told, Radio Free Europe made an

announcement the American Ambassador will be at Palacov memorial to commemorate the American airmen. To listen to Radio Free Europe is not permissable over there, but all Czechs do, to get informed about their country or elsewhere. Upon the ambassador's arrival, it was a cold dreary day; he found the fields and small winding roads full of people and waiting. An unbelievable amount of people was there. No public announcement in the news media was made, only mouth - to - mouth and the Radio Free Europe announcement. You had to see to believe the devotion and loyalty the Czechs share for Americans.

On our return to Prague the following day, my Klub Kontinental group was invited by Defense Air Attache Col. and Mrs. Robert Butschek of the American Embassy to a social in their residence. Col. Butschek is a Texan from Hallettsville and his wife from Shiner. She and one of the tour members were Shiner classmates and acquaintances of several other tour members from Hallettsville. The home of the American Ambassador and Col. Butschek is located in the best residential part of pre - war Prague.

During my discussion with Col. Butschek, he mentioned of his recent return a few days previously from Moravia, where the American Embassy staff at Palacov participated in the memorial services. As a token of appreciation the American personnel handed out small lapel American Czech flags to the crowd. Their supply ran out shortly because everyone wanted to be in possession of a flag. In the future Col. Butschek and I agreed, it would be a wonderful gesture if some organization would provide these flags because the American Embassy performs this type of services frequently.

Since 1967 my wife and I have organized group tours to Europe and Czechoslovakia annually, and the above incident is one reason I enjoy my work escorting the hundreds of persons; we had the pleasure to look at their homeland or their parents or grandparents. The Czechs are really like us, only their life - style is different. They are most happy to make contacts with Americans; in their hearts they know Americans are their friends. Everyone who has visited Czechoslovakia in my group has played a diplomatic role with the persons they met. The people are hungry for the truth. As my best friend told me on my first visit in 1967 to Czechoslovakia: "We thought the people in America have forgotten us.

Your coming is like a breath of fresh air."

Drunk Driving Kills The laws regarding DWI - Driving While Intoxicated - have gained considerable attention in the past several months and with good reason.

Because of the ever - present threat of

the drunk driver, driving on our Texas roads has come a form of Russian Roulette -- will the next car you meet on the road swerve into the path of your family car because the other driver is drunk? Will you be killed?

Will a family member be killed or

The drunk driving problem in our state has reached epidemic proportions. In fact, each year some 40,000 Americans are killed in auto accidents, and over half of those deaths were because of a drunk driver.

The Texas Legislature made an effort to toughen the laws on drinking and driving, but many believe our legistators didn't go far enough. Your District Attorney is one of those who thinks those laws were not toughened enough.

Over the next few weeks we'll look at some of the statistics, some of the attitudes and the laws relating to DWI, and we'll take a look at what the 1985 Texas Legislature is considering regarding further changes in the drinking and driving laws, including two measures I strongly support, raising the drinking age to 21 and a ban on open containers of alcoholic beverages in cars.

Drunk driving kills more people than homicides -- injures more people than guns. More Americans have died at the hands of drunk drivers during the past two years than died in the ten years of Viet Nam. In the U.S. alone, drinking drivers cause about 26,000 deaths a year -- 71 people every day.

Department of Public Safety statistics show that DWI was a contributing factor in 35,370 accidents on Texas roadways in 1983. Some 1,006 fatalities were attributable to drunk - driving - related accidents, although it is believed that that number would be much higher if Texas required blood alcohol measurements from all drivers involved in fatal accidents. Of those 1,006 deaths, 509 were \ the drunk drivers themselves.

The property damage in dollar amount is more than that done by forgers, burglars and robbers all added together. More than 25 percent of all auto insurance premiums go to pay for the damage done by drinking drivers.

It is estimated that society's loss in one year for wages, productivity, medical and legal costs, purchasing power, and the like caused by deaths and injuries in drunk driver wrecks exceeds 24 billion.

What are your chances of becoming a victim of drunk driving? If you are between the ages of 16 and 24, it is your leading cause of death. On an average weekend night, one out of every ten drivers on the road is drunk.

It should come as no surprise that drunk driving is the most common form of violent death in the nation.

Your chances of being involved in a DWI collision sometime in your life are 1 in 2.

No question about it: the statistics are frightening! What has been done about it? What can be done about it?

The next article will examine Texas law on DWI and the efforts of Texas lawmakers to address the problem.

Items Of Interest Accent on Health: Lab Robot High technology at the Texas Department of Health (TDH) is helping Texas infants get a healthy

start iniife and save taxpayers money.

A computer - operated robot, which took more than 18 months to program, made its officia11 debut at the THD Austin headquarters Saturday, January 19, for the Texas Board of Health and Dr. Robert Bernstein, Texas Commissioner of Health.

Although robots are used extensively in industry, this is the first to be used in a state public health laboratory. The robot was adapted to the newborn screening laboratory at THD, where four blood tests are run on every infant born in the state. These tests detect sickle cell anemia, plus three heritable diseases, enzyme and metabolic deficiencies, which can be inherited. Without detection and treatment, these can lead to mental retardation. By law, newborn infants' blood must be tested, and every day the screening lab receives about 3,000 samples from hospitals, physicians and midwives. Ideally, babies are tested twice -- once at birth and again at one week to a month. About 85 percent of the infants have the second screening, and this year the lab will run nearly 2 million tests, making this the world's largest lab of its kind.

More than 100 babies each year are found to have a heritable disease requiring immediate treatment.

Another 125 babies are projected to have sickle cell anemia (this is the first year for the test).

For every child we detect with a disorder that could cause mental retardation, we save the cost of institutionalizing the child, which costs the State about $1 million during the child's lifetime. Children who have sickle cell anemia can receive better care once the physician knows of the disorder. Each set of these tests costs only about $2.50 to perform, said Dr. Brad Therrell, director of THD's Chemical Services Division. That's a small price to pay for a child's well being.

Our duty at the Texas Department of Health is to promote good health, said Dr. Bernstein. By detecting specific disorders and alerting the attending physicians immediately, parents and infants can be spared needless grief and disappointment.

The growing newborn screening program at the Health Department has received national and international acclaim. With this robot the laboratory will be even more efficient and will be able to handle growth without adding personnel.

Until the development of the "Neonatomatron," as the robot is named, medical technologists spent tedious hours manually inspecting test tubes for defects, loading test tubes into racks, adding chemicals, and moving incubated trays to and from the automatic test reader. The robot will perform these repetitive duties tirelessly, said Dr. Therrell. He predicts the equipment will increase production of his 12-member staff of medical technologists and chemists.

The robot has a computer controlled "arm" that moves on a special track in a frame about the size of a laboratory table. Joined to the arm is a gripper device with a range of motion similar to the human wrist.

Two gripper "fingers" equipped with sensors can "feel" what is being picked up, whether it's a fragile test tube or a heavy tray. Each motion required for a task is programmed into a computer at the "heart" of the robot.

Adapting the IBM 7565 robot was a cooperative effort between THD and Radian Corporation, an engineering services firm headquartered in Austin.

In five years I think labs will have several robots. This one is very sophisticated, but the biggest benefit of these robots is their ability to repeat tasks over and over with accuracy, said Terry Hight, Radian's product line manager. He supervised the project worked on by Radian's Malcolm Dukler, a mechanical engineer, and Mark Brice, a computer programmer.

The three - man team, with Dr. Therrell and his staff, also designed several pieces of equipment to assist the robot. These include an automatic test tube feeder for loading test tubes onto racks and two special carts for holding trays of specimens.

State Not Revealed By Hair

Nutritional

For years mothers have been telling their children to eat their vegetables so their hair will be shiny and their eyes will be bright. Perhaps that's one reason why so many consumers believe the claims made for nutritional hair analysis.

Some relationship may exist between the state of one's health and the state of one's hair, says Texas A&M Agricultural Extension Service nutritionist Dr. Alice Hunt. But there is no scientific data which would enable someone to diagnose the mineral level in the body based on a sample of hair, she adds.

Yet, according to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates, consumers now pay more than $25 million to companies selling hair analysis services nationwide. The FTC has charged at least one of these firms with deception and asked the courts to freeze the assets of the company for use in possible redress.

According to Hunt, the companies use hair analysis services primarily to sell minerals, vitamins and other dietary supplements.

The mail - order services are often advertised in health - oriented magazines and at holistic health fairs, she says. Consumers send in a hair sample along with a fee for the "analysis." In return, they receive a computer printout and a recommendation to purchase vitamin and mineral supplements.

But there is no legitimate test that can be done on hair to determine the mineral level in the body, Hunt maintains. And since there are no vitamins in hair, a recommendation to purchase vitamin supplements because of a hair analysis is equally misleading, she emphasizes.

The fact that consumers are willing to pay for these services shows a concern for their nutritional health and may reflect the mistaken belief that our food supply is deficient in vitamins and minerals, observes the specialist.

Eating a balanced diet will normally provide all the minerals and vitamins a person needs, Hunt says. People who are concerned about their nutritional status would be better off consulting a physician for legitimate medical advice than spending their money on needless vitamins and minerals.

Wool Clothing

The combination of unusually cold weather and traditional winter sales have made this an excellent time to buy wool clothes, says a' Texas A&M University consumer information specialist.

Often when you buy wool items on sale in South Texas, you can look forward to months of storing them in a closet until winter sets in again, says Beverly Rhoades. But this year looks like it will provide a longer wearing season, she adds.

Wool fashions are an investment in quality and long life, Rhoades maintains. When buying wool clothes -- even on sale -- consider the cost per wearing. Simply divide the total cost by the number of times you estimate you will wear the garment.

Because wool clothing is durable, resists tearing and often doesn't show wear, it can generally be worn for several seasons, she explains. So the per wearing cost of buying "investment" clothing such as a wool suit may be lower than the cost of less expensive clothing worn over a shorter period of time.

When shopping for wool clothes, look for the woolmark, which may be on the label or a hang tag, says the specialist. In addition, certain descriptive terms on the label may indicate wool quality origin or quality.

"Virgin" wool has never been used before. The term indicates use only and not quality.

"Reprocessed" wool has never been worn but is remanufactured from fabric scraps and is usually of lower quality than virgin wool.

"Reused" wool has been remanufactured from items used before and is usually of lower quality than reprocessed wool. It is often used in blends.

Wool is often blended with other fibers to produce fabrics which cost less than pure wool or to enhance care, appearance or wearability features for a particular type of clothing, Rhoades says. But if a garment contains at last 50 percent wool fiber, it will behave much like pure wool, she adds.

While consumers are out looking for a bargain at the winter sales they could be contributing to the Texas wool industry, Rhoades observes.

Texas is the number one wool producing state and it provides almost 50 percent of the nation's fine grade wool, she says.

According to the specialist, the $120 million dollar industry also employs about 10,000 Texans in fiber production, warehousing and some processing.

Q: Are there any countries that do not have agreements with the United States to enforce child support against American citizens within their borders? Where can I get a list of these countries?

A: The State Department can provide information on agreements made between the United States and foreign countries. Within the U.S., Texas has enacted the Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act to enforce support orders made in other states.

Versions of this Act have been adopted by all the states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Under this Act, the country where the support-paying parent lives will bring the lawsuit on behalf of the absent, support-receiving parent.

Q: I bought a car in another state and drove it to Texas. The engine failed at 51,000 miles and I want to sue the dealer. How do I go about suing someone in another state?

A: It is best to hire an attorney in the county where the dealership does business, because that attorney will know state laws and court procedure for that kind of suit. Also, the attorney will be there to appear- in court, gather evidence, and interview witnesses. This lawsuit would probably be more expensive if a Texas attorney tried to conduct it by mail or telephone.

Q: What happens when a couple dies without a will? They had no children but there are a number of brothers and sisters on both sides of the marriage.

A: If one of the couple died first. the surviving spouse inherited all the community property and then left it to his parents or his siblings.

If the couple died at the same time, one-half of their community property goes to each spouse's parents, or survivors of the parents.

Separate property passes in a different manner, and in different fractions.

The administrator of each estate has to determine whether any of the property was separate.

Q: Is there any law to keep my neighbors from parking cars in front of my house? They have four cars and they insist on parking right in front of my house.

A: The answer to your question is probably no, unless there is a city ordinance which prevents parking on the street. You should call your local city attorney, city manager or police department and ask if your neighbors are violating any ordinances. If you would like to research your city's parking ordinances yourself, you should be able to review the code at either city hall or at the public library. If you discover that your neighbors are violating a city ordinance by parking in front of your house, you should report the violation to your police department which must then enforce the prohibition.

Q: I recently married a woman with three children from a previous marriage. Can I adopt these children? If so, what do I need to do?

A: Before you could adopt your wife's children, the parental rights of the children's natural father, if he is still living, would have to be terminated. Termination of the parental rights can be accomplished in two ways. The natural father could formally consent by submitting an affidavit of relinquishment to the court. Or you and your wife could file a lawsuit against the natural father to terminate his rights involuntarily.

Grounds for such a suit would exist if the natural father has not paid child sup-

port for a period of one year or more, abandoned the child or the mother under certain circumstances, or knowingly endangered the physical or emotional well-being of the child. The court must also find the termination of parental rights to be in the best interests of the children. The adoption proceeding may be filed at the same time as the termination proceeding and your wife must join with you in the petition for adoption. The children usually must have lived with you for period of at least six months, and any child who is 12 or older must give his consent to the adoption in writing.

Q: Is it an invasion of my privacy if a television news crew shows me as an onlooker at the scene of an accident?

A: Unwarranted invasion of the right of privacy does constitute a legal injury.

Generally, however, intrusion must be upon your seclusion, solitude or private affairs, or the public disclosure must place you in a false light in the public's eye or reveal embarrassing private facts.

In addition, no one may appropriate your name or likeness for their own commercial advantage. If you were actually an onlooker at the scene of the accident, the T.V. news crew picture probably would not be an invasion of your privacy. The key to your question is whether or not the film clip places you in a false light in the public eye to your detriment.

Q: When a woman marries in Texas, is there a state law that says that she has to take the man's last name as her own? I thought that it was more of a custom than a requirement.

A: You are correct. There is no state law which requires a woman to use her husband's last name. Traditionally, most women do change their names at marriage, but it is a matter of choice. Once a woman has used her husband's name, she must apply to the District Court to return to her maiden name, whether at divorce or during marriage. The Court will inquire at the hearing whether the change is made to escape obligations to creditors, but if not, the change is routinely granted.

Q: Can I be fired from my job for the way I choose to style my hair and wear my make-up? Neither interferes with my ability to do my job.

A: Unless you have a contract with your employer, your employer may discharge you at any time with or without reason. So, if you have no contract with your boss and he doesn't like your new hair style, he has the right to fire you.

But if you do have a contract, then the terms of the contract control especially where the contract outlines the grounds for dismissal. Even if the contract is silent on the question of permissible reasons for discharge, your employer probably is not entitled to fire you before the expiration of the contract, without good cause. Under those circumstances, your employer would be required to convince a judge or a jury that the way you styled your hair or wore your make-up gave him good cause to fire you.

Q: I took some clothing to a consignment shop to be resold. In the contract I signed, the shop said they would provide me with a monthly statement regarding what, if anything, had been sold. They also told me that if my clothes were not sold within three months, that I needed to pick them up. I never received any monthly statements and frankly, I forgot my clothes were there until two days after the three months were up. They won't give me my clothes back. Do I have any recourse against them? It seems they broke their contract by not sending a statement.

A: If you have signed a contract, then the terms of the contract will determine your rights under it and whether you are entitled to retrieve your clothes. If, however, as you point out, the consignment shop has breached the contract by not providing you with monthly statements, then you may not be bound by the rest of the contract. In other words, you wouldn't have to forfeit your clothing if the contract has been broken by the consignment shop.

Q: My insurance company refuses to pay for damages incurred in an accident because it was not reported to the police within 24 hours. A friend had the identical situation and got paid by her company. Can my company refuse to pay?

A: The policy must be read to see what notice the company requires before it is liable Jo the insured. The company may insist that since you did not report the accident in time, they were not able to investigate.

The courts hold fairly strictl y against insurance companies in this sort of dis-, agreement. Your company will have to pay unless they can prove they were harmed in sonic way by your failure to report immediately to the police.

Q: When can an individual under normal conditions and circumstances • carry a firearm? Can I carry a firearm from one county to another?

A: A rifle with'a barrel length greater than 16 inches or a shotgun with a barrel, length greater than 18 inches may be generally carried except at a school, polling place, or court. A handgun may not he carried on or about your person unless you are: 1 Working in the armed forces or tor a prison: 2 On your own property: 3. Traveling (generall ■ from your residence to another county): 1. Hunting. fishing or target shooting, 5. A peace office!, 6. A licensed security officer in uniI6rin at work.

A convicted felon may not possess a firearm except at home. No one may possess explosives.: machine guns, sawed-off firearms. silencers, switchblades, brass knuckles, armor piercing ammunition or tear gas.

Q: After 31 years of marriage and five children, my husband has now left me for another woman. I have no money, no job qualifications and no high school education. I can't afford a lawyer and I need to know if there is any way 1 can get any money from him. Please help me.

A: Some attorneys are willing to accept cases in which the other party is ordered to pay the lees.

If your family income is very low, Legal Aid may be available in your county. There are also groups of lawyers who have offered to take a certain number of cases a year at no charge, but again, these lawyers are reached through Legal Aid. Q: My husband and I are elderly. We have no children and no will. If one of us dies, can someone come in and take away our property?

• A: If you die without leaving any surviving parents, children, brothers or sisters, all your property goes to your spouse.

If either of you leaves brothers or sisters, they will take a share of the estate, with the balance to the surviving spouse. These brothers and sisters would have a claim to property, but would not be able to force the survivor out of the homestead. ....You can prevent these dispute* and uncertainties by writing wills. Also, persons of your age should give Power

of Attorney to a younger person to care for your estate in case you become ill.

Q: I slipped and fell on the steps of a building because no attempt had been made to clear away ice and snow.

Would I have any chance of asking the building owners to pay the medical bills I incurred as a result?

A: Your case is a special kind of negligence action known as a "slip and fall" case. To assert a claim against the owners of the building, you would have to show that the owners either knew the ice was on the steps or that the ice had been there for a sufficient period of time for the owners to have discovered it and take precautions to prevent people from slipping. If the building owners or their insurance carrier does not pay for your expenses, you could file a lawsuit to recover your medical expenses, any lost wages, and damages for pain, suffering and mental anguish.

Q: I gave a fee to a locator service to find an apartment. The agreement was that if I didn't find an apartment through their service, they would refund my money. I didn't find my apartment through them and now, six weeks later, I don't have my money back. What recourse do I have?

A: If you signed a written contract with the apartment locator service, the terms of that agreement will determine whether you will get a refund. If you have satisfied all of the contractual conditions to entitle you to a refund then you can file a breach of contract lawsuit to recover the fee plus attorney's fees. It is also possible that you have a claim against the service under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act. You should also consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division of the Texas Attorney General's Office. Branch offices are located in most major cities, or you can call the main office in Austin for assistance.

Q: I heard that a recent legislature passed a law banning the sale or use of fake drugs like caffeine pills for amphetamines. Is this true? If so, what is the new law?

A: The Simulated Controlled Substances Act was effective September 1, 1983. This act makes it a third-degree felony to manufacture or deliver a drug purporting to be one of the listed controlled drugs, but is actually only an imitation. The Act pertains only to those drugs defined as "controlled substances" under the Act. Q: I purchased an electronic game for my son. The game does not work properly and the store will not take it back because I no longer have the receipt. What should I do?

A: You should write a letter to the manufacturer of the game explaining where and when you purchased the game, when the game stopped working and what the problem is. Also ask what the manufacturer will require for you to have the game serviced or replaced. If the game was manufactured by a reputable company, then it will probably be repaired or replaced. If the game came with any sort of written warranty, of course, mention this in your letter.

zpet do vlasti. Vypuknuti prvni svetove valky v roce 1914 zasahlo ru give do Kubatova umeleckeho rozvoje jelikol byl nucen nastoupit vojenskou slulbu, z nil se vratil teprve v roce 1919. V teto dobe prigel pak do Pferova, v srdci Moravy, jako mladY 'e'en profesorskeho sboru pferovskeho realneho gymnasia. Piisobeni na tomto historickem stiedo gkolskem ueiligti pieru gil Antonin Kubat dvakrat. Poprve na dobu etyi let, kdy dobrovolne odegel vyueovat v letech 1922-1926 na matieni Ceske gymnasium ke krajanCim do Vidne, podruhe za hitlerovske okupace, kdy i byl dan piedeasne do vYslulby a internovan jako rukojnif nacistickYmi okupanty v Olomouci. Po druhe svetove valce byl tento profesor a umelec pro svou zaslulnou Cinnost v podzemnim hnuti vyznamenan ministerstvem vnitra Ceskoslovenske republiky pametnim odznakem druheho narodniho odboje. Jeho obrazy se ye stare vlasti na piIklad nachazeji v kancelari presidenta Ceskoslovenske republiky, v galerii hlavniho me'sta Prahy, v pierovskem rnuseu a na tamejgim mestskem Narodnim VYboru; v zahraniei jsou Kubatovy obrazy v galeriich Insbrucku, Mnichova, Moskvy a jinde. Antonin Kubat mel mimo Pierova 8 samostatnYch vYstav svYch maleb; ve sdrulenYch vYstavach (spolu s jinYmi umelci) bylo tomu pak v Praze, v Podebradech, v Ceske Trebove, v Brne, v Ostrave a v Hranicich. Mimo Ceskoslovensko byly jeho malby vystavovany zejrnena ye Vidni a v Benatkach v Itálii. Rada KubatovYch praci byla vydana té v pohlednicovYch souborech; v Praze byla to na pfiklad COS (Ceskoslovenska Obec Sokolska) a ye Vidni byl to vyznamny krajansky spolek KomenskY a tamej gi Delnicke listy. Safety Corner Correct Farmstead Hazards Hazards and inappropriate human actions are responsible for most accidents. Make periodic farmstead inspection, including your home. Check housekeeping, electrical wiring and equipment, storage places, ladders, walking surfaces, stairs, steps and handrails.

Have family members and employees correct or report hazards and unsafe conditions.

When a hazard or unsafe condition is spotted, correct it as soon as possible.

Take faulty equipment and appliances out of service until repaired or replaced.

Have ample storage space and put things away when you are finished with them.
