Sunday, January 6th the editor was asked by President Robert Dobecka, Sr., of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood, to install their officers for 1985 and I obliged. They had a nice, efficiently conducted meeting and discussed their future, plus their plans for 1985.

As usual, a friendly evening was spent among the real fraternalists.

Lodge 6, of course, is one of our original twenty - five organizing lodges that started our SPJST Society and History in July 1897.

Much luck is wished to them. They, as so many of our lodges, have a problem of their membership wanting a few to do all the work. Our entire membership in all the lodges of our SPJST Society is reminded that too many of our members elect officers and committees to serve in the coming year in each annual meeting and then let the officers and committees do all the work. The thing all members should remember is: "Help your elected members in operating your lodge building after you elect them!"

Don't let them slave! *** Monday, January 7th we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jim Ballew, editor of "The Fraternal Manitor" where all of the ninety - nine plus Fraternal Benefit Societies send correspondence to. He is a very intellectual and good conversationist with a typically fraternal sense of humor. It was indeed a pleasurable evening spent among the guests, Supreme Lodge officers and directors.

We look forward to seeing Mr. Ballew in the near future. *** Time. You cannot stretch it, you cannot borrow it. You can only make the most of it!

And making the most of it includes attending your lodge meetings for the following reason.

If you ask ten people what they think about anything, chances are you will get ten different opinions. As Montaigne said more than four centuries ago, "There were never in this world two opinions alike, anymore than two hair or two grains. Their most universal quality is diversity."

And overtime, we have somehow concluded that this is often bad, that too many opinions make more trouble than they are worth.

In practice, though, only a handful of disciplines cannot afford diversity of opinion. Law and mathematics are two that come to mind. Why insist, for example, that 1 plus 1 = 3, or argue as the officer is filling out your citation that the 35 mph speed zone should really be 45 mph zone?

Montaigne's principle as applied to our own lodges, says that on any given issue there will be many opinions within our member - societies. This is often borne out at our meetings, where moderators find themselves doing double duty as referees because a hot issue has triggered a flurry of opinion from the audience.

Few leave such sessons disappointed, and informal discussion

often continues long after the session has ended. People of similar opinions gather to argue fine points, while those at opposite ends of the spectrum patiently try to straighten each other out This type of exchange is one of the benefits of membership. Time and again people comment about the value they place on the idea - sharing that takes place at our meetings.

They know that important decisions call for a full range of facts, and that one of the greatest information resources available is their peers in our lodges. *** May you ever have enough -- health, understanding, humility, success, work, love, laughter, desire, fulfillment, respect, responsibility, long life with meaning, and with them will you have a prosperous 1985.

This is the time we look forward with new determination to make the new year one of accomplishment and growth in our personal lives as well as our jobs. If you are not sending your reports and letters to our Vestnik on a regular basis, will you please resolve to do so in 1985? It is very important to have them on time: THURSDAY NOON, we ask for your cooperation! **to All but three of the fifty state legislatures convene sometime in January. Kentucky does not meet in 1985. Florida and Louisiana do not convene until April. If past sessions are any criteria, there will be a group of bills introduced dealing with life, health and accident insurance that have or may have an affect upon the operations and business of fraternal benefit societies. Bills in the U.S. Congress that impact upon the life, health and accident insurance business will be presented and have to be watched. The National Fraternal Congress Association and Texas Fraternal Congress will have to scrutinize them.

The NFCA reports that activity in preparation for introduction of the revised and up - dated Model Fraternal Code [MFC] is increasing as 1985 state legislative sessions approach. The project is under the direction of the MFC Subcommittee of the NFCA Law Committee, William R. Heerman, chairman. The plan is to arrange for introduction of the MFC in selected states. The Subcommittee decided that concentration on six to ten states in 1985 would be practical from the standpoint of NFCA personnel and financial resources. A brochure outlining the principal features and improvements contained in the revised MFC is being prepared for use in the legislative efforts.

The MFC is included in the Virginia Insurance Code Revisions, which probably will not be introduced until 1986. The fraternal chapter of the proposed Utah Insurance Code revision is patterned after the present Wisconsin law, and probably will be introduced in 1985. Oregon is expected to consider some insurance code revisions in 1985, including the Fraternal Chapter, for subsequent legislative consideration.

Other states where there is a high probability that the MFC will be introduced in 1985 include Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska and Pennsylvania. Member - societies will be kept informed of developments and their support will be essential in obtaining enactment.

The revised MFC has been enacted in RHODE ISLAND, effective January 1, 1985.

Miss Cathy Elaine Hundl of Austin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delphin D. Hundl of Houston, was awarded a $500 Scholarship by the SPJST Supreme Lodge, Temple, Texas on Saturday, September 29,1984, at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Velek of Shiner.

Installation Ceremonies At Cottonwood The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 was held on Sunday, January 6, 1985 at 3 p.m. with the installation of officers.

Kevin Dobecka and Keith Hykel led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and Kevin also led the SPJST Pledge. Everyone remained standing in memory of our departed Brother Robert Hawkins.

There were nineteen members present with all officers being present, also.

All reports were in order as given.

Correspondence was read from Brother and Sister George Straten.

The youth club report was given by Sister Willie Mae Schuetz. Sister

Schuetz thanked everyone who helped make the Christmas Program a success. The bake sale on December 21, 1984 turned out real well. Also, after the sale, some of the parents and youth members took the gifts to the rest home. The residents enjoyed their gifts and our visit to them. The club will be getting ready for their Easter Program. Their Valentine Party will be held on February 15th. We will have games and refreshments. Tammi Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

The Board of Trustees report was given by Brother George Straten. He reported that some of the wooden chairs had been sold.

Brother Rudy Sefcik installed the new officers for the coming year.

The $10 door prize drawn was Susan M. Mynar, not present; $10 prize Deborah Hromadka, not present; $1 progressive door prize drawn was Albert Casper, Jr., not present; and the $2 door prize was won by Sister Stella Perez.

Our next Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Friday, February 1, 1985; and the regular lodge meeting will be held on Sunday, February 3 beginning at 3 p.m.

Lodge 47 Seaton Meeting Dear Members and Friends, The January 6, 1985 meeting was called to order by President Jerry Pechal at 2 p.m.

Flagbearers J. D. Chlapek and Daryl Kortis led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased Brothers Walter Urbach and Clarence Dubcak, and Sister Frances Hutka. May their souls rest in eternal peace.

The next order of business was the installation of officers and trustees.

We were privileged to have the Supreme Lodge President Brother Howard Leshikar to do the honors.

We welcomed the following visitors to our meeting: Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Lonnie, Augusta and Freddie Schroeder, Mrs. Fojtasek, Mrs. Bradshaw, Howard and Mary Leshikar and sons Ryan and Cody.

Come back and visit again.

Miss Hundl is the first recipient of an SPJST scholarship from SPJST Lodge No. 10 in Shiner. She and her family are lifetime members of SPJST Lodge No. 10.

Cathy graduated in the first semester of her 1983 - 84 senior year at Robert E. Lee High School, Houston, with a grade point average of 4.0 and ranked number one in a class of 535 students.

She is attending the University of Texas at Austin where she is majoring in pre - medicine psychology.

After the scholarship presentation, Cathy was honored with a luncheon and social by her family and SPJST members.

Roll call showed all officers present, eleven sales representatives present, and six were absent. All officers gave good reports.

Secretary Ann Koon read the minutes of the last meeting and announced the following new members: Daniel L. Killebrew, Brad A. Killebrew, Gordon Lee Kohutek, Rosa Lea Christenson and Bobby Zavodny. We want to welcome each of you into our lodge.

All chairpersons gave good reports.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, February 3 at 2 p.m.

This is my first letter to the Vestnik as the new reporter for Lodge 47. I will try my best to report to our members, especially those who are unable to attend, the happenings in our lodge. If there is something or someone I have failed to mention, please feel free to correct me because I am working for you, the members.

So many ladies have asked me for the following recipe for a cake I brought for a lunch some time ago, so I am going to put it in the Vestnik, maybe someone else would like to try it.

CHOCOLATE PUDDING DESSERT Mix '/2 cup flour and 1 1/2 cups stick oleo Press in 9" by 13" pan Bake 30 minutes at 325 degrees.

Cool completely. Beat 1 cup of powdered sugar and 1 (8 oz. pkg.) cream cheese at room temperature for 2 minutes.

Add V, large container of Cool Whip. Spread on crust. Mix 2 small or 1 large box of chocolate instant pudding (I use one small box of vanilla and 1 small box chocolate or any other flavor) with 3 cups milk.

Spread on cream cheese mixture.

Spread remaining Cool Whip on top of pudding mix. Chill. Sprinkle with pecans if desired.

January Meeting Dear Members, Our Lodge 66 will hold its first meeting of the new year on Sunday, January 20th at 2:30 p.m.

There will be a dinner served at 1 p.m. The ladies are kindly asked to bring sweets.

The youth club will meet at 1:30 p.m.

News From Lodge 88, Houston The holidays are over and it's back to the old routine for most of us. This is my first letter of the new year of 1985, so we wish you all a happy and peaceful New Year from everyone at our lodge to everyone at yours.

The New Year's Eve dance was a sell - out as usual. The Knights of Dixie kept most of the dancers on the dance floor most of the time. Everyone had a good time and they came dressed in their holiday finery.

On, December 29, the Al Pierson dance was also well - attended. Era Richards, Entertainment Committee person, and her helpers hosted this affair. Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox has this Big Band Orchestra booked next Friday, February 15th and Saturday, February 16th. This is an advance ticket sale dance so, under our new ticket policy, all advance tickets must be paid for one week in advance.

Manny Green will appear in the Chandelier Ballroom for the first time on Friday, January 25th. Dancing will be from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m., and this will be a DRESS - CODE dance.

Tickets are now on sale in the lodge office during office hours for $8.50 per ticket; call Josephine and Shirley at 869 - 5767. They will be glad to assist you in purchasing your tickets and making your table reservations.

Rounding out the month of January will be the Vrazels on January 19th and Ray Jurecka on the 26th. Pick out your favorite and come dancing. All the regular Friday and Saturday dances are still only $4 per ticket; it is BYOB, ice and set - ups are on sale in the ballroom. So we ask that you not bring these items. They enjoyed the lovely summer weather Houston was having at that time and returned to the snow and ice at their home sporting sun tans. Tim's sister and brother - in law, Frank and Ruth Kurz, were to come into town to attend their granddaughter's wedding, but the nasty weather in Oklahoma grounded them. They will make it in later for a visit.

To Install Officers

Dear Members, Our regular monthly meeting was called to order by Vice President Joe Hurtik in the absence of our President Louis Grochoske on January 18 at 8 p.m.

The fifteen members present were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by George Rippin. After a moment of silence for our departed brothers and sisters, a roll call of officers revealed the absence of Louis Grochoske, Donny Looney and Glenda Young.

Our guests were Frank Kearney from Boston, Massachusetts, brother of Sister Marie Hampton, and Alfred Dueser.

Minutes of the November meeting were approved as read by Secretary Cindy Hampton.

Three hundred dollars were collected at the dance which will be given to the Tarrant and Johnsen Counties Child Abuse program.

New member accepted was Wiltene Ernest.

It was voted to donate $100 to each S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home at Taylor and Needville.

Fraternally, We extend our condolences to John Ellen Miculka, Durbin on the death of his father.

Second Vice President Reported on the sick list was Norma Durbin. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Czech Classes

In Houston Registration for the 1985 spring semester classes in Conversational Czech will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15 and Wednesday, January 16 at Memorial Senior High School, 935 Echo Lane, Houston, Texas 77024.

The beginners class, Czech I will be held on Tuesday evenings, starting January 29 and the advanced class, Czech Inter. will be held on Thursday evenings starting January 31. All class hours in the 12 week courses will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each evening.

Tuition for each course will be $35.00 plus $5.00 registration fee.

Ladies Circle, Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends, The Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 meeting opened with President Mary Powers, Secretary Frances Grizzard and Treasurer Heriminia Cihacek.

Mary Powers welcomed our guests Mary Pavey and Janie Allen.

Lillie McMillen, chairperson for the Sunshine Committee, reported that Mrs. Marie Tesar was in the hospital.

She also reported that she had sent cards to Juanita Johnnie, Mr. Farek, Richard Hubenak and Mrs. Matusevitch.

Mary Powers presented gifts to her officers and reporter and all of the special volunteer workers and lovely handmade Santa Claus lapel pins to wear on jackets or coats to each person present.

I was really proud of mine. I had to go to the bank downtown on business right after the meeting and several people asked me where I got my pin.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Elizabeth Gregory, Marie Tesar, Kristi Gilcreaves, Helton Whitaker and James C. Greer.

From The Youth Leaders Cottonwood Youth Club's Numerous Activities Dear Members and Friends, The youth club of Lodge No. 6 held their meeting at 2:15 p.m. on January 6 with a good attendance.

Our Christmas Party was well attended. The turkey and dressing, with all the trimmings was delicious.

Many thanks to all the cooks and members.

We had two guests from the Supreme Lodge; namely Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy. Also our Editor Rudy Sefcik and his wife, Maxine. We enjoyed having you; come back, again!

After supper the youth club had their Christmas program entitled, "The Twleve Days of Christmas," and "The Christmas Story." Then Santa Claus came and visited with the children, they all had a lot of fun.

Afterward we had exchange of gifts. I want to thank the youth club members and everyone who gave me a gift.

Our youth club sold tickets on items.

The sales went over real well. Many thanks for all the items.

On December 21 they held a bake sale at the Leroy Bank and we wish to thank all of you for your donation of pastry as well as your help. Then the youth club members, their parents and I took gifts to the West Rest Haven.

The residents really enjoyed the gifts and Christmas cards. After our rest home visit, we all went to the lodge hall and had pizzas and drinks.

Lodge No. 6 Youth Club donated paper to the Metallic Age Group of St. Paul's Church of Gerald, cakes to the rest home, to "Toys for Tots," and to a needy family.

The club members are planning a bowling trip.

Craig Hrornadka was our only January birthday celebrant. Tammi Dobecka brought the cake. Keith Hykel will bring the cake for February.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Youth Club of Taiton held its monthly meeting on January 6th.

Our meeting was called to order by President Michelle Srubar. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Keith Kresta, and Jean Dorotik recited a prayer.

The contest winners in three age groups were as follows: 6-9: 1st -- Michael Kasper 2nd Lenice Kasper 3rd -- Bradley Krpec 10-12: 1st -- Marcy Dorotik 13-17: 1st -- Michelle Srubar 2nd -- Jean Dorotik Jean and Marcy Dorotik, Lenice Kasper and Michelle Srubar read poems.

Door prizes were won by Amy, Dennis and Kristy Vacek, Amy and Keith Kresta, and Linda Treumer.

The meeting was then adjourned and we worked on craft. Refreshments were served to us afterwards.

Joseph Bedrich [left], a Rogers FFA Chapter member, is congratulated by Bill Caraway, the National FFA Secretary, on his achievement of the American ' Farmer degree. The degree was awarded in a ceremony at the 57th National FFA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri on November 8th - 10th, 1984. Brother Batla was born on March 3, 1900 at Seaton, Texas. He lived in the Wall community for 55 years and was a retired farmer, and a chartered member of the Wall Brethren Church.

Brother Batla married Emily Barina on January 21, 1919 in San Angelo.

She died on July 21, 1980; also one grandson, Captain Michael Patrick

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of FRANCES D. HUTKA, who died at her home on Monday, December 10, 1984. Mrs. Hutka was 70 years old.

Sister Hutka was born in Cameron, and was the daughter of Joe and Frances (Orsag) Kolay.

She married John P. Hutka, and they farmed in the Seaton community until their retirement in 1958 after which they moved to Temple.

Sister Hutka was a member of the Temple Brethren Church.

Services for Mrs. Hutka were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12 at Sheffield Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Labaj officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Hutka; a daughter, Helen Bland of Little River; two sons, Gilbert Hutka and Dr. John Hutka, both of Temple; a brother, Walter Kolay of Temple; a sister, Annie Chupik of Belton; six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

May our departed sister rest in

eternal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

Brother Sladek was born on December 23, 1906 in Williamson County, Texas and was married to Anna Kneblik on October 26, 1927 in Taylor, Texas.

He was a member of the Holy Angel's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Brother Sladek was a retired farmer and lived in San Angelo for 14 years.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Doris Kohutek of Miles and Joyce Hoelscher of San Angelo; ten grandchildren, and twenty - two great grandchildren.

The grandsons served as pall bearers.

Brother Polasek was born on May

18, 1910, in Lavaca County, near Hallettsville, Texas, to Joe and Annie (Kalcak) Polasek. attained his Brother Polasek education in Moravia, near Hallettsville. He worked for T.G.T. and retired after 30 years. He was an owner of a recreational center "S Curve," and operated it for 19 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 28, and the American Legion Post No 226.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 14, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, following full military services at the Holy Cross Cemetery. Our band director, Mr. Hankins, of East Bernard High School, played the taps. Wake services were held at 7:30 p.m. on December 13 at the Davis - Dawson Funeral Home Chapel in East Bernard with Father Joe Vrana officiating.

Pall Bearers were members of the American Legion Post No. 226; namely, James R. Hlavinka, Eugene Repka, Lodgie Pilcik, Ray Dusek, John F. Dusek and Frank Valigura.

Funeral arrangements were under the, direction of Davis - Dawson Funeral Home of East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes (Hanzelka) Polasek; one daughter, Irene Ma.zurkiewic of Brenham, Texas; one sister, Annie Valigura of East Bernard; five grandchildren, one great - grandchild.

She was also a member of the Texas Leaders Round Table, The Women's Leaders Round Table, and she was Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star - Blue Bell Chapter No. 856.

Sister Beeson is survived by her husband, John R. Beeson of Houston; one son and daughter - in - law, Major Larry C. Kruse of the U.S. Air Force and Theresa Kruse of South Berwick, Maine; one granddaughter, Kristina Kruse. She also had five step daughters.

He was a veteran of World War II. Brother Dubcak worked for Temple National Bank since 1948 and presently served as vice president of Interfirst Southwest of Temple.

Nobel Prize

Jaroslav Seifert, a Czech poet, became, at age 83, his country's first winner of the Nobel Prize in literature today.

The eighteen member Swedish Academy of Letters cited Seifert, who is not widely known outside his country and Central Europe, "for his poetry which, endowed with freshness, sensuality and rich inventiveness, provides a liberating image of the indomitable spirit and versatility of man."

Academy Secretary Dr. Lars Gyllensten said Seifert was honored for the poetry he wrote over the past six decades rather than for any single work.

"He can look back upon a career of more than 60 years which shows many signs of being likely to continue,"an academy statement said of Seifert."

"With almost 30 volumes of collected poems behind him and a few excursions into the realm of prose --above all, his recently published memoirs --- he stands out today as the leading poet of his country," the statement said. "He is read and loved by his countrymen, a national poet."

Jana Seifertova, Seifert's daughter, told Associated Press that her father was hospitalized with "a heart ailment," and that the Swedish ambassador in Prague informed him of the award at his bedside.

She said she had not yet spoken to Seifert and could not say how he reacted.

Gyllensten, who chaired the five member Selection Committee that considered what he called a "short list" of half - dozen candidates since late summer, disclaimed any political significance in the choice.

WALTER URBACH, age 76, who passed away on Thursday, January 3, 1985, in a Temple hospital.

Services were held Saturday, January 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Harper Talasek Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe DiPaola officiating.

Burial was at Bellwood Memorial Park.

Brother Urbach had been a resident of Temple since 1971 and had previously lived in Joplin, Missouri.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his widow, Helen Urbach of Temple; one son, W. Glen Urbach, Jr. of Garland; one daughter, Jennifer E. Nelson of Dallas; one brother, E. W. Urbach of Kirkland, New Mexico; four grandchildren, and

Born in a workers' district in Prague in 1901, Seifert published his first collection of poems, "Cify in Tears," in 1920.In the following decade, he helped found a literary avant garde group called Devetsil.

He 'worked as a journalist for various Prague publications until 1950, and later did free - lance,writing and translated books. He was known for his interest in botany and support

for the preservation of the ecology.

Most of his works were written in his native language, but his collections of poems have been published in German, French and English.

During the Nazi occupation of his homeland in World War II, Seifert emerged as a spokesman for the oppressed Czechoslovak nation.

In the 1970s Seifert was among the first signatories of the intellectual dissident manifesto, Charter 77.

However, some Czechoslovak dissidents do not consider Seifert a political person.

"He always supports those in the right," "This is great," said Czechoslovak poet Vera Provaznikova. "I love the Czech language and I am glad it is being given such appreciation. He is a great poet because his poetry is not loaded with philosophy. It sings."

Morovy Stoup --- The Prague Monument --- A little book of Seifert's verses consisting of 57 pages, translated by Lyn Coffin. The book is illustrated by Jiri Kolar, who used the form of art called collages, a departure from realism, as Seifert's style of creating poetry that does not rhyme is replaced by prose.

Seifert's first collection of poems, "The City of Tears," 1920, called attention to the hardness of living in poverty, but he also fantasized about good things in life. His second collection in 1923, sings of love, of a young man's desire for feminine attention. A visit to France influenced him to accept the changes made by techniques, inventions, and French dadaism. More collections followed, also children's verses.

Archives Of Czechs And Slovaks

large ,collections and for exchanges is high We need to buy tapes. All that costs money. Other library collections are often endowed with funds which finance these activities.

Lost Forever: An American of Czech descent recently died. He had a collection of books and published outside of Czechoslovakia. He often mentioned that his collection will be willed to an institution which will shelter it. We have been informed that his entire written estate and archives were discarded by people who did not care or know about his intentions. This episode unfortunately is quite common.

It is of the utmost importance that our archives be remembered when you write your last will and testament. The archives preserve the heritage of your father and mother. Many Czech and Slovak organizations are building new library archives; others have been long established, take the time to research them and then make the decision as to where you would like your materials to be kept.

What is the nature of Archives?

Archives contain written and printed documents, photographs, films, records and tapes. Printed documents are books, brochures, musical notes, anniversary publications, periodicals, newspapers, almanacs and programs.

Written documents are manuscripts, memoirs, letters and minutes of societies.

Financial help from governmental and public institutions cannot be expected in the current economical situation. We understand that you already support the fight against cancer, hospitals and charities. You should, however, not forget your common roots and cultural inheritance. These are your archives and they need your help today.

What is the value of Archives?

History is written on the basis of available documents. Those who did not leave written sources, are often disregarded by history. Historians utilize records of fraternal, cultural, artistic, religious, political and scientific activities. We need records for genealogical and anthropological studies. History of ethnic groups is necessary to evaluate accurately and logically their contributions to the building of the state in which the immigrants settled.

Contemporary immigrant Archives in the United States. State historical societies may accept local ethnic materials. Their activities are limited by ignorance of foreign languages.

Archival materials should be centralized not only in one country, but also from countries of the entire world. Czech and Slovaks emigrated to North and South America, Australia, many countries of Europe, and several states of Asia and Africa. The immigrants of 1939, 1948 and 1968 maintain close cultural contacts by high quality periodicals. Archives encompassing these countries were established in the USA in the past fifteen years. Most archives actively exchange their duplicates.

What do Archives need? The task of the archives is to collect and preserve all historical materials without regard to their religious, political, linguistic and cultural trends. The materials must be, however, concerned with Czechs, Slovaks and Carpathoruthenians and their descendents outside of Czechoslovakia. In spite of their already large size, the archives contain only a fraction of published materials.

Few periodicals are complete.

Almanacs before 1900 are often lacking. We need your cooperation in further building of the collections.

Is financial help necessary? The Universities offer space for deposition of the collections. Archival activities require much more. Old newspapers must be microfilmed before the paper disintegrates. Books which cannot be obained as gifts must be bought.

Periodicals, newspapers and magazines are often donated, but many should be purchased. Currently over two hundred periodicals are published outside Czechoslovakia. The materials in archives should be catalogued by a person with a library training. The catalogue should be published. The postage for shipping

Was A Peerless Mapmaker Herrman

Historians disagree on the date of birth (1605 or 1621?), the nationality (German or Czech?) and the spelling of the name (Heerman, Herman, Herrman?) of the greatest cartographer of early Maryland.

On his famed map, "Virginia and Maryland," completed in 1670, he called himself Augustine Herrman, Bohemian. That should settle the last two arguments. And, he witnessed a treaty in 1633, the suggestion is strong that he was born in the earlier year Sorting out fact from legend on Herrman isn't easy for map - making was only a sideline. He was also a pirate, a merchant, a scholar, a land speculator, a diplomat, a hunter, a horseman and a manorial lord.

Born in Prague, the son of a Protestant minister driven out of Bohemia when Catholicism was established as the state religion, Herrman moved to the Netherlands.

He joined the Dutch West Indian Company, settled in New Amsterdam (New York) in 1643, where he became one of the Nine Men, the advisory council to Governor Peter Stuyvesant.

He is,said to have quarreled often with the governor. Either because of or despite this, he was sent on numerous diplomatic missions.

When the English, the Dutch and the, Spanish were fighting for the control of the seas, Herrman was granted a privatee's license. He preyed successfully on Spanish shipping to win the pirate's label. His new wealth allowed him to start trading successfully along the Atlantic coast.

He opened the tobacco trade with Holland, dealt in furs and slaves as well. Ambitious for wealth, he also dabbled in land speculation, unsuccessfully, on Manhattan Island.

As jurisdiction of Dutch settlements on the Delaware River was disputed by the Maryland colony, Herrman was one of two New Amsterdam ambassadors sent in 1659 to resolve the dispute.

Herrman's diaries show the painful difficulties in travel in those times.

Conferences with Governor Josias Fendall and Philip Calvert were unsatisfactory, in part, because of the "utterly imperfect" maps of the region. Herrman offered to map the Chesapeake region for the Dutch but Governor Stuyvesant was too parsimonious. Lord Baltimore was not and offered Herrman a generous grant of land and all the parks of a manorial lord.

In 1661, Herrman moved to Maryland, picked his first grant of 4,000 acres of land, Bohemian Manor, in what was to become Cecil County, and began his mapping. With some 4,100 miles of tidal coastline, the task was gigantic even for a skilled surveyor like Herrman. He plugged away at it, finishing in 1670. His careful, detailed work of every creek, inlet and river, would stand as the authoritative cartographic source of Maryland and the Chesapeake well into the next century. He was copied repeatedly but never matched. Still, he fumed over the "slobbered over" and error - filled copper engraving of his work.

What may be legend is the tale of Herrman's return to New Amsterdam despite his status as "a fugitive from his creditors" due to old failed land deals. Arrested and jailed, he is supposed to have feigned insanity and demanded that he be saddled on his trusty white horse. The Dutch complied to keep him quiet only to watch him crash out of a second - story window.

Herrman is said to have crossed the Hudson River, galloped across all of New Jersey, swum the Delaware, and returned home to Maryland. In one version, the horse, snorting blood from his nostrils, collapsed at the doors of Bohemia Manor. In another, the heroic nag lived on and had a full scale statue erected on the manor lands.

By proclamation of provincial assembly in 1661, Herrman became a "free - denizen" of Maryland, a legal step that entitled him to transfer property. Five years later, he was naturalized as a full citizen, the first in Maryland to make this transition.

In time, Herrman accumulated over 25,000 acres of land that made him the largest landowner in the province next to the proprietor. He built a great manor house in 1684, which burned in 1816. There he lived the lavish life of an English nobleman, riding to the hounds establishing a huge deer park.

He, relished being called Lord Herrman, perhaps the only manor head given that privilege in Maryland.

He had all the rights to run a court baron and a court leet. His ambition was to establish a family and lordly dynasty. His will required that any inheritor of Herrman land had to add Augustine to his name.

One son, Ephraim, joined the Labadists, an austere and mystical sect that believed in community property.

Herrman first promised them 3,700 acres, then changed his mind but lost a law suit over the property. Herrman couldn't rescue his son from the sect that he grew to hate. In spite, he placed a curse on Ephraim though he withdrew it before he died in 1686.

Ephraim died within two years and only Casparus, the second son, was left to carry on the lordly dynasty that

lasted fitfully until 1787. Three daughters were given smaller chunks of land.

Though Herrman served as a commissioner of justice of Cecil County, a commissioner to treat with Indian tribes, and an important figure in territorial disputes between Maryland and William Penn, his most important legacy to Maryland remains his map. It was critical to the Calverts in maintaining their territory.

As late as 1873, the Herrman masterpiece was still vital evidence in a dispute between Maryland and Virginia, a tribute to the skill of Maryland's first free denizen.

Items Of Interest Minerals Needed In Diet In addition to the multitude of vitamin supplements on the market, health - conscious consumers are also being urged to take minerals. But do we need to be concerned about our intake of minerals?

Minerals are essential for good health and growth, says the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service nutritionist Dr. Alice Hunt. It is also important that people get their minerals in just the right amounts, she adds.

Some minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride,potassium, magnesium and sulphur, are needed in relatively large amounts. In this case, a "large" amount ranges from milligrams to one gram.

Other minerals, called "trace minerals" are needed in small amounts, Hunt says. Iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt, flourine and selenium are included in trace minerals.

Minerals like lead, mercury and cadmium are actually harmful and can cause poisoning, cautions the nutritionist.

Other minerals can cause ill effects if you take as little as twice as much of the amount required for good health.

Taking too much of one essential mineral may upset the balance and function of other minerals in the body, she observes.

Excess mineral intake can reduce your ability to perform physical tasks and can contribute to health problems such as anemia, bone demineralization and breakage, neurological disease and fetal abnormalities, Hunt warns. The risks are greatest for very young, pregnant or lactating women, the elderly and those with inadequate diet or chronic disease, she explains.

from all of the basic food groups, the nutritionist says Since minerals can be stored in the body and become toxic if too much accumulates, taking mineral supplements can be risky, Hunt remarks. If you choose to take mineral supplements take them under the supervision of a physician, and don't use them in amounts in excess of what the body needs, she advises.

Flowers And Plant Care On cut flowers there are four important steps to follow: 1.) Cut flower stems slantwise or straight across with a sharp knife.

Never use shears. Remove any foliage below the waterline.

2.) Place flower stems in water as hot as hands can stand, and set in a cool place for an hour or two Then arrange, using fresh cool water in your vase or container.

3.) Place the flower arrangement in a cool location, away from heat and drafts. Keep them in a cool place overnight.

4.) If you use special cut flower preservatives which prolong the life of flowers and arrest bacterial action in the water, just add water to the container as needed. If you don't use preservatives, the following should be done every day: change water, scrub container clean, cut the flower stems with a sharp knife.

These simple suggestions, methodically followed, will help a great deal toward keeping flowers lovely longer.

plants do not like the intensely bright sunshine of mid - summer. They thrive near a south or east window during the fall, winter, and spring months. If you cannot place them near a window, use artificial lights over them.

Watering: Keep the soil moist.

Examine it once a week, when it starts to dry out, add enough water to wet the soil all the way to the bottom of the pot. Be sure that any excess water is drained off.

Temperature: Most foliage plants thrive best at night temperatures of 60 to 65 degrees, and day temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees.

Fertilizers: Since the amount of soil and fertility available in a small pot is limited, small quantities of plant food are desirable at three or four week intervals, used according to directions on package.

Wearing flower corsages for daytime or evening occasions is both fashionable and fun. Body flowers (corsages) can be worn on the wrist or in the hair. Wear them on a collar, on the waist, or on the shoulder. Wear them on a purse. But remember, always wear them the way the flowers grow: Blossoms up, stems down.

Guard your flowers carefully against sudden exposures to cold air. In very cold weather, carry your Body Flowers in the box. Put them on after you arrive at the festivities. And remember, too much handling bruises delicate petals and stems.

To keep your Body Flowers fresh and bright for a second day, cover with wet cotton or a thin wet cloth, refrigerate in the florist's box.

(Orchids are the exception. Unwind the stem wrapping and place the orchid stem in water. Keep in a cool place, out of drafts, but not in the refrigerator.)

Flowering plants need good light, moderate temperatures, reasonable humidity, uniform moisture in soil, and a little fertilizer occasionally.

Light: Flowering plants need all the sunshine that can be provided in your home, particularly in winter. Place them near an east or south window.

Temperature: Most flowering plants grow best at night temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees, and day temperatures of 65 to 70 degrees. Don't place them over radiators. Keep them out of drafts.

Humidity: Keep humidity in room as high as possible. Increase humidity around the plant by placing it in a plant box or jardiniere filled with moist peat moss.

Watering: Inspect soil daily and add water when it starts to dry out When, watering, wet the soil all the way down.

Fertilizing: If you keep flowering plants longer than six to eight weeks, some plant food should be added.

Follow directions on the fertilizer package.

Foliage plants grow better if you give them proper light, suitable temperatures, adequate moisture, and a little plant food.

Light: Place foliage plants in or near a window where they will receive good light during part of the day. Most

Control Winter Moisture In Your House Water, frost or ice on the inside of windows is a chore`to clean up and can produce conditions for the growth of mildew in your home, says Texas A&M University AES housing specialist.

Homeowners may not realize that it takes only four to six pints of water to raise the relative humidity of a 1000 square foot house from 15 to 60 percent, says Dr. Peggy Owens.

For example, a person breathing produces 1 pint of moisture per hour and mopping a 150 square foot floor will release 4 1 pints of moisture into the air, she explains.

In addition to normally generated moisture, certain heating methods can contribute to moisture in the home, Owens says. In very tightly sealed homes with good insulation and storm windows, the use of an unvented kerosene space heater can double the amount of moisture vapor generated in the house each day.

The presence of continuous condensation on windows is a good sign of excess moisture, Owens says. If frost or ice forms on a glass or metal

frame and sash and if paint peels and wood rots, there is certainly excess moisture.

If a single pane of glass gets so cold that moisture condenses and runs down it in the winter, then double glass and-or a heating vent located beneath the window can eliminate the problem, says the specialist.

But sometimes condensation will occur on windows even when the relative humidity in the house is low.

In this case, condensation on windows results more from the cold window surface than from excessively high moisture in the room. Adding storm windows or polyurethane film to the windows, or placing heated air vents can solve the problems, advises the specialist.

If moisture condenses between the permanent window and storm window, or polyurethane film and the window, the warm, moist air from inside the house is leaking to the airspace between the two'. To correct this problem, says Owens, seal the leaking spaces or ventilate the two windows. Options For Financially Troubled Producers Low commodity prices and high production costs have resulted in many agricultural producers being unable to generate sufficient cash income to support family needs and repay existing, debts.

In addition, many producer loans are not now fully secured because of reduced land value. Thus, lenders are concerned about debt repayment problems and loans that are not fully supported by collateral and some are severely restricting credit for many producers, according to a team of agricultural economists with the Texas Agricutural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

The team members include - Dr. Wayne Hayenga and Dr. Richard Trimble, based at Texas A&M University; Dr. Kenneth Stokes and Jose G. Pena.

Farmers who have serious financial difficulties should consider debt restructuring, partial liquidation, sale and lease - back arrangements, outside equity capital and as a last resort, bankruptcy, to solve the problem of restricted operating costs.

Restructuring loans may help solve some financial problems. The process can involve consolidating debts to some extent, but more often it involves re - negotiating short term loans to a longer repayment period. The procedure may involve pledging otherwise unencumbered property as collateral, the economists explain.

CoMpare the net payment necessary to service the restructured debt with the current payment when considering debt restructuring, they ,advise.

Regarding partial liquidation, producers need to identify the parts of a business that are doing better than others. An ideal solution would be to sell any part of a business earning less that the interest charged on any outstanding debt. Proceeds could be used to pay off existing debt and the partial sale should also free management time for other parts of the business, the economists explain.

Partial liquidation may also reduce some economies of scale, particularly in equipment use, and thus raise the average cost of producing other commodities, they caution.

Producers should avoid selling the most productive assets -- since this move would leave them in a financially disastrous situation, the economists warn.

The sale and lease - back arrangement is a good option for a farm business asset that can expect above average price appreciation. This process sells an asset, usually land, to an investor seeking a long term investment with expectations of considerable capital appreciation and some income tax benefits. The investor usually has no desire to manage or operate the property, and leases the operation back to the producer on a long - term basis.

Thus, the producer continues to operate the business while new owners have an opportunity for capital appreciation and tax benefits.

When analyzing this option,. consider: Sale price -- is it reasonable given the current situation?

Terms of the lease - back -- can the producer live with them?

Tax implications of the sale (capital gains taxes may have to be paid).

Annual income tax implications.

An equity investor may be helpful if a producer needs to expand to achieve economies of scale which may lower average production costs, but cannot obtain loan funds . Innovative producers can structure investments, usually in limited partnerships, whereby non - farmers can invest in a farming business so the investor reaps tax benefits, limited current income and an expectation of capital gains.

Difficulties may include finding the investors and developing an investment opportunity that is salable to investors.

A producer having serious financial trouble may consider the federal bankruptcy laws as a last resort. The major alternative under Chapter 11 allows an individual to petition the bankruptcy courts for permission to restructure debts. He must present a detailed financial plan showing that both he and his lenders will benefit. If the producer does not prevail, he can be forced into involuntary bankruptcy by his creditors and may be out of business, the economists warn.

Filing for bankruptcy protection is serious business, and competent legal and financial advice is needed when making this decision, they advise.

Will 1985 be a "watershed year" in farm policy development? It could be if there is a decisive commitment to cut farm program costs says an economist in marketing and policy from College Station.

Dr. Ronald D. Knutson with the TAES of the Texas A&M University System, says only two alternatives exist for sharply reducing farm program cost. These include eliminating or

12/VESTNIKâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Wednesday, January 16, 1985 sharply reducing deficiency payments under the target price program, or imposing rigid mandatory production controls.

Farm program costs have increased from less than $5 billion in the late 1970s to nearly $20 billion in 1983.

Major reason for this sharp increase lies in development of the target price program, which was established to separate farm income support from price support, Mr. Knutson explains.

Before target prices, support prices (loan rates) were maintained above world market prices. Accordingly, exports generally did not occur without subsidies.

Export subsidies, however, did not keep the United States competitive in the export market. Lowering the loan rate was not a politically acceptable policy option because farm income would fall. Development of the target price concept then made it possible to lower loan rates while protecting farm income since the government paid farmers the difference between the target price and market price.

Initially, deficiency payments were small but when surpluses began to build, the gap widened between target price and loan rates.

For the United Statces to remain competitive in the world market, it had to maintain a loan rate in line with world markets and the political price for a relatively low loan rate was an escalating target price.

For example, in cotton the difference between the target price and the loan rate has increased from 5 percent per pound in 1973 to 24 cents in 1985. Potential cotton deficiency payments thus increased nearly fivefold in 12 years, Mr. Knutson says.

Deficiency payments, he mentioned, can be reduced by lowering the target price, raising the loan rate or controlling production. Lowering the target price means less income protection for farmers, while raising the loan rate would reduce deficiency payments.

Production controls decrease government expenditures by reducing commodity volume for deficiency payments and by raising market prices.

If controls were voluntary, farmers choosing not to participate in the program would be ineligible for payments. Too stringent production controls would mean that exports could be reduced because a large volume of commodities would not be available to foreign buyers at competitive prices, explains Mr. Knutson.

Production controls are a politically viable option in Texas. A recent survey by the Extension Service showed that two - thirds of the producers favored mandatory production controls in which all farmers would be required to participate. Some bargaining, however, would be required with Midwest farmers because only about one - third of them favored controls.

Controls will not be decided by farmer opinions, since policymakers could opt for them as a cost control measure, even if a clear majority of farmers do not favor them.

General political and economic consideration as well as conditions in agriculture will determine whether 1985 will be a watershed year in farm policy, Knutson contends. â&#x20AC;&#x201D;SPJST--

Commodity Options-New Risk Management Tool Farmers and ranchers of Texas and others now have another technique

availatle to help manage commodity price risk. They can buy and sell agricultural options.

Options allow agrkultural producers to establish an approximate price floor for their production. In addition, commodity buyers may establish an approximate price ceiling for their future purchases, say two economists with Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

Dr. Ernest E. Davis, economist livestock marketing, and Dr. Edward G. Smith, economist - grain marketing, explain that an option is a contract that gives buyers the right -but not the obligation -- to buy or sell a particular commodity at a specified price for a specified time period.

Under the new program, option trading will allow buyers of an agricultural commodity option the right, but not the obligation, to take either a long or short position on the future's market.

Compared to hedging with the future's market or forward cash contracting, options offer a more flexible price insurance plan with a limit to financial obligation.

When viewed as price insurance, option costs can be added with other production and marketing costs in determining a price objective, the two economists explain.

An advantage to hedging with options is that producers can enjoy additional profits from the cash market if the commodity's price moves in the producer's favor, Davis and Smith explain. A position on the future's market is not established unless a buyer exercises the option -- it will simply expire and the producer will gain the advantage of increased cash market prices.

Limited financial obligation of an option trade is another advantage. The option buyer pays a one - time fee called the option "premium" plus brokerage fees. Option premiums are negotiated between the buyer and writer (option seller) similar to any other transaction. Premiums are determined by supply and demand factors, the economists say.

The limited financial obligation assures that the buyer of an option will not be subjected to untimely margin calls associated with future's trading.

Only if the buyer exercises the option will he be assigned a position on the future's market, Smith and Davis explain. Because options are bought and sold there is a continuous market for them.

As with any marketing tool, option trading has some disadvantages. For example, a commodity producer may find the option premium for his price objective to be prohibitively high. In addition, commodity options are tied to underlying future's contracts. The trader, therefore, is still subjected to hedging basis risk resulting from variations in price movements of the cash and future's market.

Renewal provisions for amending or changing existing lease.

To minimize misunderstandings, even matters that are to be according to local custom should be spelled out in the agreement.

Share leases are common in farming. Freedom to negotiate terms can serve to allocate land among tenants in a way that contributes to economic efficiency in agriculture.

Negotiation is an effective method of establishing land rent if expectations are realistic, if projected costs of production are calculated accurately, and if weather conditions are favorable.

Many owner - tenant leases are negotiated using a one - third sharing ratio and feed grains for both inputs and income during the growing and harvest seasons, they add.

Salmon Cheese Pate, made with convenient canned salmon from Alaska, is a delicious appetizer that is easily prepared. In addition, it can be made well in advance of serving, leaving no last minute preparation for the host or hostess.

Delicious canned salmon is mixed to a smooth consistency with cream cheese, zesty blue cheese and selected seasonings.

Chilling the spread for several hours develops its superb blend of flavors.

Versatile, ready-to-use canned salmon makes the preparation of party foods and family meals a quickly accomplished task. This nutritious seafood also makes a welcome addition to a holiday gift basket or Christmas stocking, especially for the person living alone.

Salmon Cheese Pate 1 can (7-3/4 oz.) salmon 1 tablespoon lemon 1 package (8 oz.) cream juice cheese, softened 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup crumbled blue 1 teaspoon Worcestershire cheese 1 tablespoon grated onion Dash garlicpowder 2 tablespoons chopped Parsley sprigs parsley Drain and flake salmon. Blend cheeses with salmon and seasonings until smooth. Mold in small bowl lined with plastic wrap. Chill several hours. Unmold; garnish with parsley sprigs. Makes about 2 cups pate.

Seruing Tip: Serve with crackers, toast rounds or thinly sliced rye bread.
