Christmas is approaching rapidly.

Actually it is no trouble purchasing presents and decorating the tree.

The main objective at Christmastime is to make the traditional holiday season a time of true tranquility, happiness and peace ...

The year 1984 is almost coming to a close and Christmas is next week.

The most favorite of human being's time of the year, is looked forward to by countless children all over the world so long in advance, enveloped with mysterious charm. It seems to be the only feast that has survived

essentially unchanged until our days. To everyone the holiday season has a special meaning for families, and even the most callous hearts are touched and long for the warmth of home hearth. Even though the occasion is met by most housewives with weeks of hectic cleaning and baking, it is a time of goodwill, good wishes, and unbearably heavy letter-carriers' bags. Let us also remember that it is the only time in the entire year when guns are silent. ***

Most people's thoughts are to keep that warm feeling of Christmas giving all year, which is good. We suggest you hold on to it. If you do not like the last-minute shopping for someone whom you like, have a place stored somewhere in your home and the next opportune time you know would be just the gift for your loved one, buy it, whether it is too far from Christmas.

We suggest that you take a moment to ponder the magic of Christmas and you will not be one of the cynics who may feel "I am glad Christmas comes once a year" or that Christmas is too commercial today. Actually the holidays are what you make it and it can be put to good use. It's best to ask yourself: What Christmas means to you and what you want it to mean.

We also want to remember that the spirit of Christmas proclaims the brotherhood of man. It is more powerful than the mightiest cannon, it has defeated armies; it has broken the strongest chains of servility.

The spirit of Christmas has made gentlemen into great leaders; it has also turned brutal men of evil and avarice into weaklings to be scorned and forgotten.

At this time of the season, the editor wishes to extend again his personal Holiday Greetings from our house to your house and may your wishes be suited to your own best desires, and spent in good health and cheer among your loved ones as your condition will permit.

Last, but not least try not to have to drive, and if you must, drive with utmost care. Do not let tragedy mar your Holiday Season.

District VI Sets Meeting Date The District VI Spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 24, 1985 in Moravia Parish Hall with Lodge 23, Moravia as host.

We invite all members to come and attend our meeting; guests are welcome.

Then a delicious Christmas supper was served, after which "Dear 'Ole' Santa" came to see all the youngsters, followed by recorded music for those who wished to dance.

I'd like to thank those who decorated the hall and prepared the food, and who helped in any way, to make it a very nice Christmas supper. It all looked very festive, and I'm sure that it was enjoyed by all, who were there.

81 December Meeting Lodge

Needville Lodge 81 met December 9 for the last meeting of 1984.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings at 12 o'clock noon.

Thanks to all the ladies for bringing casseroles and various other dishes and desserts. Also our thanks to Lydia Faler for bringing her projector and films of her recent tour through the Eastern states.

She took some beautiful pictures all along the way, there and back and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it while we were waiting for the opening of the meeting.

At 2 p.m. President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order and Jo Ann Morgan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

All of the officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes and also thank you cards from the Stephanie Walzel and Elsie Michalec families and also from Mr. Marx, administrator of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. Thanks for the holiday greeting from the Supreme Lodge.

4/VESTNIK-Wednesday, December 19, 1984 Jo Ann Morgan gave the financial statement. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendal gave her report. Special Fund treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave the schedule of activities for the coming weeks and then gave the financial report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

We were glad to hear that Victor Werner is recuperating at home after having knee surgery. Keep up the good work!

Vlasta Nowotny reported on sending cards to the sick and elderly. She had received a very appreciative card from Mrs. Agnes Stalmach and Ernst Huff for being remembered and also several calls.

A motion was made and carried to have some limestone hauled in to repair the entrance to our parking lot. Edwin Susan was appointed to see to this matter.

President Charlie Matcek and wife delivered the apples to the Rest Home.

Refund checks were handed out and the attendance prizes were won

by Raquel Condel and Tillie Mikeska.

Santa left bags of fruit, nuts and candy under the Christmas tree for everyone. They were distributed by Lydia Faler, Raquel Condel and Cheryl Windsor. Thanks to Mary Matcek for decorating the tree again.

December 19 a ham will be given away at Bingo, so be there, you may be a winner.

Our next meeting will be held January 13 beginning with a noon meal at 12:30, so come and enjoy the fellowship and good food.

84, Dallas Meets

Lodge

More members should have been at our meeting last Monday with election of officers being held. Our President Joe Ondrusek stated his disappointment.

Sgt.-at-Arms Olson led the group in reciting the Pledge to our flag. A moment of silence was observed for our departed member, Brother Dujka.

Read and approved were the minutes of the last meeting.

A beautiful Christmas card was received from the Supreme Lodge and displayed.

Reports were given by the following committees.

Entertainment, Youth rehearsals for the play to be presented at our Christmas Party are underway, also announced was the Christmas favors made by the junior youth were donated to the Brady Center, a trophy for winning "first" in State Competition was presented by the Beseda dancers.

House Committee-The new bar boxes are to be installed January 26th. Call 352-5295 to help with the project, Brother Salac asked.

Congratulations to Anne Zvolanek, new president, for the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council which had its Christmas Party last

Thursday. Czech Culture Society meets and has its appreciation dinner the last Monday in February.

Softball report-A trophy was presented to the lodge by Brother Ben Jarma in behalf of the team for winning the Spring league.

Sunshine Committee sent get-well wishes to Steffan Smith and to Sister Frances Baleja.

Sympathy cards to Brother Charlie Barta (loss of brother), Joe Zastoupil family (loss of son), Louis Paul Dujka family (loss of father), Anne Skrabanek (loss of brother), Debbie Jarma (loss of grandfather).

Our lodge extends sympathy to the families.

Hall rental report was given by Brother Emil Petr.

Candidates for additional insurance for November are Sister Janette Liska, Sister Michelle Marek and Brother Mike Hubik.

New Year's dance tickets and reservations can be purchased at our dances or contact 824-1194, 3525295, 826-3557, 823-4447. Dec. 18 at 7:30 the entertainment meeting should have been marked on your calendar, also the next lodge meeting January 21st. One could see the disappointment on President Ondrusek's face at the December 10 lodge meeting on the small attendance, hopefully more will show up during 1985.

The "Country Boys" play for our New Year's dance, so please come and enjoy the great music played just for you!

92, Fort Worth Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held December 9th and, suddenly, we find the year will be gone in a few short weeks. The session opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag led by Stacy Hubenak.

All officers were present and their reports were approved.

Secretary Christine Zich read correspondence that included a letter from Brother Leshikar commending us on our work with the child abuse program.

Guide Richard Hubenak passed the register for all of us to sign and the showing was commendable.

Martha Durham reported sending nineteen cards to members over sixty-five and also sent get-well cards to Mary Tesar in the hospital for tests and to Juanita Johnnie who underwent surgery for Quadruple bypass heart operation.

Lonnie and Gladys Burkhalter, who have been stationed in Germany, have been in the states because of the death of Lonnie's mother. They are also visiting Gladys' mother, Minnie Ruzicka.

Since their return they will be living in San Antonio. We also mourn the death of Mary Kubala, wife of Louis Kubala, who died November 27th.

Several memorial donations made in her name were by the Frances Antunes family, Albert and Helen

Kubala, Kenneth, Mary Ann and Mary Cecelia Krivanek, Martha and Dick Durham, Richard and Raymond Hubenak, Carl, Christine and Shirley Zich, Victoria Murphy, Syble and Raymond Mitchell, Ed and Millie Kropp, and Mike and Helen Paprskar. Two contributions were given in memory of John Murphy, one from Roy and Lydia Alholm, and the other from the Slavonic Mutual Fire Assn.

December 22, Hazel and Herman Kennedy will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.

After the usual order of business was completed we held the yearly election of officers and the result was: President-Albert Kubala, Vice Paprskar, President-John Secretary-Christine Zich, Treasurer-Raymond Hubenak, Financial Secretary-Evelyn Spacek and Youth Club Leader-Gordon Hubenak.

The Board of Trustees consists of Albert Kubala, John Paprskar, Raymond Hubenak, Al Kercho and Kenneth Krivanek.

We would like to thank Lodge 154 for the lovely Christmas party held December 2 for the four SPJST lodges in the Metroplex. Everyone enjoyed a nice dinner followed by several hours of delightful dancing.

We also enjoyed a good dinner after this December meeting. It was prepared by Evelyn Spacek and Justine Chaloupka. Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

Youth Member Carrie Ann Cleveland led us to the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present.

The minutes were approved as read and all reports were accepted.

Brother Milan read correspondence from Brother Bernie Gebala in reference to changes being made in different types of policies.

He also reported on the success of our Metroplex Lodges' Christmas Party, and on all the nice comments made. He extended a special thanks to all.

He also asked anyone having a mannequin or knowing where we could get one for Brother Otto Hanus for the Museum, let us know.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported the youth club was sending a $50 donation to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I. The youth club, with a group of Sokol gymnasts, have picked the Four Seasons Rest Home with 125 in the home and will make gifts for each one and entertain them December 21st. You are great!

New candidates are Michael Wayne McCullough, Kathryn Elaine McCullough and Gregory Michael McCullough.

The Best Petroleum Inc. of Jacksboro, Texas donated $100 to the workers at their Christmas Party held at our hall Friday night for a job well done; in turn, it was donated to the Building Fund.

We extend our get well wishes to Brother Benny Pavey who had eye surgery and is doing well. He appreciated the cards and your thoughtfulness; also to Sisters Mary Tesar who is in St. Joseph's Hospital and Sister Juanita Johnnie in Harris Hospital. Get well soon!

"Happy Birthday" went out to Jerry Milan, Patti Gage and Anne Johnson Foster.

Brother Bill Renfro was our door prize winner and was not present.

The meeting adjourned to a lot of calories for the birthdays and to watch the Cowboys lose.

Parita Donates To Worthy Causes

Lodge 161 La Parita held its regular quarterly meeting on December 9, 1984 at Three Oaks Restaurant in Pleasanton, Texas at 11:30 a.m.

The meeting was called to order by our President Lloyd House who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Sister Tillie Valchar read the minutes of our last meeting they were approved as read.

Officers gave their reports and communication was read from SPJST Headquarters as well as other correspondence.

We approved donation to the Scholarship fund for $25 as well as a $25 donation for the Cancer Fund.

Sister Tillie Valchar accepted to be the Fraternal Activity Coordinator for our lodge for Charitable Projects.

Sister Sandra House received a $500 scholarship from the Supreme Lodge.

183, Mid-Cities Holds Elections Lodge

Dear Members: Hello to all of you!

The Christmas Party at Lodge 154 was the biggest one so far. I was told that over 400 persons were served at a noon meal and, after everyone had eaten all they wanted, the Ennis Polka Boys played all of the favorite polkas and waltzes for all those who like to dance, If you missed this one, you really missed a good party.

The regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, December 9 at the lodge hall. There was a nice crowd at the meeting, all reports were read and approved as read.

There was a successful discussion on ball rentals, which cleared up'the problems of the past few months. If any of you members want to rent the lodge or know of some of your friends who wish to rent, you need to call Lambert Pustejovsky (817) 275-0647 and he will be in charge of rentals and managing the hall.

A Christmas tree for the hall was donated by Juanita Cole, Inez Greenlees, Lambert and Bennie Mae Pustejovsky, and Eugene and Jeannie Roznos. Thank you members for the thoughtfulness and making the lodge pretty at Christmas.

December 15, in the afternoon, Lodge 183 will donate the use of the premises for some mentallyretarded children and their families for a Christmas Party; just one more way that the lodge is helping our neighbors. Saturday, the 15th from 6:15 to 8:30 there will be a small gathering of members for a party and, from 8:30 to 12:30 there will be a dance with music by The Old Time Country Band, (but all of this will be history by the time this letter will be published).

Members don't forget the New Year's Eve dance and party, the music will be by Henry Rejcek Polka Band. That is the day when everyone has big ideas of what he will do next year and go have a le., drinks, a lot of dancing and fun, and wake up the next morning wondering: What happened!

The new officers for Lodge 183 for the year of 1985 are: President-Phill Boyle, 1st Vice President-Pat Sill, 2nd Vice President-Lambert Pustejovsky, Secretary-Jeannie Roznos, Treasurer-Inez Greenlees, Financial Secretary-Daniel Ftoznovsky.

Norman M. Kneschk was appointed Public Information officer and reporter. The officers will need all the help you members can give them to keep the lodge going and growing as it has in the past.

YOUTH CLUB NEWS FROM LODGE 39, BRYAN Dear Readers, Our Youth Club had its monthly social Friday, November 30 at our Lodge 39 Home. We rented a TV and VCR and showed two movies which were Where the Red Fern Grows and Ice Pirates. We were also treated to a pizza supper of all we wanted to eat. It was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed bringing their bedrolls and getting comfortable for a fun night.

Our monthly meeting was Sunday, December 9. Amy and Shannon won the door prize.

After our meeting we went Christmas caroling to two different nursing homes. After that we decorated the Christmas tree.

LODGE 35, ELK YOUTH CLUB REPORT We had a Halloween Party Sunday, October 28 with 22 people present. There was skating, dunking for apples, roasting hot dogs and marshmellows, also a haunted house.

The haunted house was arranged

by Richard and Louise Burney, Richard Lee Burney, David Smith and visitor Louis Wall. David played Dracula and slept in a real coffin until his surprised guest arrived.

There were flashing lights in red, blue, purple and green. A black light was used to make spooks from every child. To enhance the spook show, Louise Burney painted the faces of all youth club members who were willing. It was amazing what can be done with white, black and red paint plus glow in the dark jelly. Monsters were everywhere and the black light enhanced the show.

Our regular monthly meeting was held November 11 with 12 members present, plus two leaders and one mother.

We had four new members present who joined the night of the Halloween Party.

We decided on our Christmas Program. Parts were assigned after the meeting. Practice times will be scheduled by the youth leader.

A cake walk was planned for Saturday night, December 8 dance with Cherokee Rose providing entertainment.

Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was held Sunday, December 9, with thirteen members present.

The door prize was won by Amy Schmidt and Shannon Wilson.

Everyone brought bags of peppermint candies which we bagged to take along with us when we went Christmas caroling after the meeting at two of our nursing homes in town.

We also brought Christmas gifts for the children's shelter of the Twin City Mission to be distributed at

their Christmas party for the needy children.

We collected four huge bags of gifts. After this we practiced for our Christmas program which will be held when our mother lodge has their party. Hope to see you all there!

LODGE 30 YOUTH CLUB ENJOYS YULE FESTIVITIES Dear Vestnik Readers, The Talton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. December 2, at the Taiton Community Center.

President Michelle Srubar brought the meeting to order. Kristi Korenek led the Pledge, and Marcy Dorotik recited the prayer.

For the contest everyone was asked to make an ornament for Christmas. The winners in ages 6-9 were: 1st-Stephanie Roye, 2ndValerie Roye, 3rd-Bradley Krpec; in 10-12 was: Marcy Dorotik; and in 1317 were: 1st-Jean Dorotik and 2ndMichelle Srubar.

All the members participated in making craft. We painted small Christmas ornaments.

The adults' Christmas Party was also held December 2, which consisted of a turkey and dressing dinner.

who passed away in a Temple hospital November 4, 1984 at the age of 72 years.

Brother Hering was born in Travis Falls, Colorado, December 7, 1911 to the late Emil and Anna Hering. He was married to Lydia Richter November 6, 1935. They lived around Rosebud area until 1944. They moved to the Barclay area in 1949 where he farmed while he was able to work and lived in their home until his death.

Brother Hering was a member of Ocker Brethren Church where he attended regularly.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Hering; three ehildren, Mrs. Chas.

Groceclose of Rosebud, Mrs. Roland Dilner of Lott; one son, Johnny Hering of Temple; one brother, Emil B. Hering of Rosebud; three sisters,

Emily Koslovsky of Rosebud, Ann

Griggs of Temple, Evelyn Koslovsky of Temple; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother George and a grandchild.

Pallbearers were Albert Koslovsky, Larry Koslovsky, Michael Hering, James Hering, Edward Hering and Bob Mayne.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother ALBERT J. KUBENA,

age 77 years.

Mr. Kubena was born February 18, 1907 to Ben and Caroline (Wigrys) Kubena in East Bernard.

He passed away November 13, 1984 at Eagle Lake Community Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Kubena was well-known and respected by everyone that knew him. He attained his education in East Bernard. Mr. Kubena retired from Needville Gin Company and was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 28.

Funeral services for Albert J. Kubena were held November 15 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with entombment at the Holy Cross Mausoleum. Wake services were recited at 7 p.m. November 14 at the Davis-Dawson Funeral Home in East Bernard with Father Joe Vrana officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia (Fojtik) Kubena of East Bernard; two daughters, Joan Michulka and Patricia Kolacny of Houston; one son, Dennis Kubena of East Bernard; two brothers, Henry of East Bernard and August of Rosenberg; one sister, Lydia Sperlik of East Bernard; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kubena was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Leo Matusek, Julius Matusek, Steve Valigura, Louis Valigura, George Fojtik, and James Fojtik. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis-Dawson Funeral Home in East Bernard.

who passed away November 19, 1984 at Claystone Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.

Sister Kovar was born May 17, 1902 in the Crisp Community, the

daughter of Frank and Anna Skrivanek Novak. She attended school in Mott Schools.

June 27, 1928 she was married to John W. Kovar of the Ensign-Oak Grove Community. In 1928 they lived in Garrett. Then in 1938, they moved to the Ennis-Bardwell Community.

Sister Kovar was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the SPJST Lodge 25 and the Women of the Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, John W. Kovar of Ennis; three sons, John of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Jerry of Lancaster, and Albin of Riverside, California; seven grandchildren; one brother, John Novak of Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Jurica and Mrs. Lillie Babovec, both of Ennis; and several nieces and nephews.

Early Texans Viewed Christmas Foremost As Religious Holiday Did Christmas exist in the minds and hearts of Texas children before Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer made his mark on the holiday folklore scene? Is it possible for youngsters to enjoy the yuletide season without Frosty the Snowman, the Grinch that Stole Christmas and mounds of brightlycolored presents under the tree?

Christmas was first and foremost a religious celebration to children in early Texas and they were often an integral part of many holiday traditions.

According to researchers at The University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures, the Wends, a Slavic cultural group from Germany who settled near Giddings, Texas practiced a charming custom involving both the children and the family's farm animals. Each Christmas the eldest son was given the responsibility of repeating the message of the birth of Christ to all the dogs and cats and barnyard animals.

Tales of the bright-eyed wonder of little ones at Christmas are yuletide favorites. One such story stems from an incident that occurred around 1720' at a mission in San Antonio known today as the Alamo.

The mission fathers had built a realistic manger scene and asked the Indian children to adorn it with their gifts to the Christ Child. The children brought whatever they could find — including beads, colorful pebbles and cloth — and placed their presents around the crib.

One small boy, however, was heartbroken because he was from a poor family and had nothing to give baby Jesus. A kindly priest, Father Margil, took pity on the lad and

Doskocils Celebrate 50th Anniversary

pioneers did not have pretty paper in which to wrap their homemade gifts.

Fruit — especially apples and oranges — were popular treats at Christmas and often appeared, along with candy, in stockings carefully crafted by talented needleworkers and hung near the fireplace. As one Texas woman put it "Mama avoided using our black stockings since the lint might stick to the goodies and the white hose because the treats might discolor them."

Traditions In Czechoslovakia

Mr. and Mrs. Doskocil HOLLAND—Mr. and Mrs. Roy Doskocil, Sr. celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and relatives at a reception and supper recently at the SPJST Hall. Hosting the reception were the Doskocil children and their families, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Doskocil, Jr. of Rogers and Jane11 Doskocil. The Doskocils have two grandchildren. Doskocil and the former Bennie Pavelka were married Nov. 27, 1934, in Temple. Doskocil is a retired farmer. Brother Doskocil is a member of Lodge 80, Holland of longstanding. The entire SPJST membership extends its congratulations to the honorees. accompanied him on a search for a suitable present. They found a little vine with faded green leaves and berriqs which they dug up and placed in a small clay pot. The Indian boy took the gift to the Christ Child and begged him to accept it and make it beautiful.

The next day was Christmas. As the little boy walked into the chapel, he heard cries of "milagro," a miracle. He looked closely and saw that his little vine had twined itself around the crib, its leaves now dark green and its berries shiny red.

Called the Margil vine in honor of the kind priest, Father Antonio Margil de Jesus, the vine still grows wild in Texas and its berries turn bright red at. Christmastime.

To hard-working pioneers, frontiersmen and immigrants, Christmas was also a chance to shower attention on their youngsters. One woman wrote of her family's celebrations, "Every child got, apples and cookies, for the mothers had certainly made up plenty of cookies and doughnuts.

You see, they had killed hogs before Christmas, and while they were rendering up big pots and kettles of lard, and that grease was boiling hot, they would drop doughnuts in and fry them until they had great pans of them. We had stick candy and peloncillos (brown sugar cones) so the children were not, neglected."

For children of Yugoslavian immigrants, the holiday season was a little different. The Yugosla ys, some of whom settled near Galveston, Texas to found the Saints Constantine and Helen Serbian Orthodox Church, followed the Julian calendar, which placed their celebration 13 days after the traditional Christmas observance for December 25th.

Christmas. Eve is Badnji Day, or Day of the Oak, for the Yugoslays.

On that day, a specially selected three-year-old oak tree is felled, cut in three pieces, and the Yule Log is burned behind the church in memory of the fires built by the shepherds as they watched over their flocks at night.

A smaller tree is decorated with cookies, nuts, apples and streamers of red, white and blue for the children. This tree is carried into the sanctuary and later it, too, is added to the fire, decorations and all, as the children scramble to retrieve their treats before the fire consumes the goodies.

Gifts presented by the Three Wise Men to the Christ Child were probably the start of our modern gift-giving tradition, although this did not become a widespread practice until the Middle Ages. The idea of wrapping gifts in colored paper is a relatively new one, however. In frontier times presents were hung on the trees because

The devil and the angel walked ahead, signaling the approach of St. Mikulas on December 6, the feast day of St. Nicholas. The devil rattled his chains, the angel wrote with a quill pen as St. Mikulas asked them if they were good or bad. Then Christmas Eve, according to the legend, good children received nuts, candy, fruit and gifts. The others received old potatoes.

St. Mikulas, who lived in the 4th century A.D., and became one of the most venerated saints, was Bishop of Myra, the capital of Lycia, an ancient province of Asia Minor, now Turkey. He was especially noted for his charity. And, of course, he was the first Santa Claus.

Most of the Christmas tree ornaments include the specialty of eggshells decorated to look like strange fish or representations of the angel who accompanied St. Nicholas. Gaily colored pinwheels resembling falling snowflakes or twinkling stars are suspended by a thread. Gilded walnuts and many varieties of bells are hung in clusters on bright ribbons to create an interesting tree. A small creche is often placed at the base of the tree.

Christmas games are often candle customs. One such game entails players placing tiny candles in nutshells and lighting them. The shells are then floated in a tub of water. The player whose candle burns the longest is the winner.

In ancient times, finding a good husband was of paramount importance to girls, and many holiday games revolved around predictions of just whom 'a girl would marry. For example, girls drew sticks from a pile of kindling wood. A long stick drawn meant a tall husband, a thick stick meant a stout husband, and so on.

Melted lead was dropped into a pan of water and the shape the lead took as it cooled was a forecast of a future husband's occupation. A branch of a cherry tree was broken off at the beginning of Advent and placed in a pot of water in the kitchen to keep it warm. The twig usually burst into bloom at Christmastime to make a festive house decoration. A flowering branch was considered an omen of good luck.

The girl who tended it was supposed to find a good husband within the year if the branch bloomed exactly on Christmas Eve. Traditionally there was caroling in the streets and in the homes on

Christmas and dancing and eating after the fasting period, which ended on Christmas Eve with a special dinner. Christmas was, and still is, ,a time for conversation, and it is customary for those who have quarreled during the year to forgive each other publicly.

Carolers go from house to house carrying miniature Bethlehem scenes and giving informal concerts.

It was customary to invite them in for a glass of wine, and vanocka, a sweet roll filled with almonds and raisins. Little boys dressed as The Three Kings also went out singing for treats.

A very great blessing was to be received if the children slept on a bedding of straw and hay on the floor under the Christmas tree, or under the table on which the tree was placed. This custom allowed them to take part in the grace and privilege of the Lord's poor and humble birth.

At Christmastime a large carp will be prepared in four different ways. The best cuts are covered with flour, dipped in egg, covered with bread crumbs and fried.

Lesser cuts of the same carp are baked a la black with dried prunes and served again with dumplings mixed with butterfried cubes or white bread or crescent rolls.

The third menu, a la blue (na modro), is made in palin gelatin as "rosol" and served cold with a salad.

The head and tail of the very same carp, wrapped in white cloth, are boiled and the stock is made into soup by mixing with finely cut carrots and other vegetables from the garden and served with croutons.

Christmas Eve supper might include pearl barley soup with mushrooms (eerna kuba), fried carp in black sauce or fruit gravy, fruits and decorated cookies.

Christmas dinner might include giblet soup with noodles or another soup, roast goose with dumplings and kraut, braided coffee cake, kolache, fruit and nuts plus coffee.

A Czech Christmas If you asked a Czech to choose the one outstanding holiday, the one that is really set apart from all the others, the one which pushes Czech ladies into a whirl of activity, the men into long nights building this, or polishing that, and the children into behavior patterns that could only be described as saintly — well, that person wouldn't have to choose at all — he or she wouldn't even have to think about it — for only one holiday could possibly fit this description, and that, of course, is Christmas.

The Czechs go "all out" for Christmas. Things get off to a good start with the traditional house cleaning at the beginning of December. This is no ordinary house cleaning, but rather a week-long effort to use up as many bottles of ammonia, cans of furniture and floor wax as one can, and, if at all possible, go through at least one broom. Why was all this cleaning necessary? After all, there will be much activity in the house -many people coming and going, much baking and cooking, tree

The Christmas holiday season officially begins with St. Nicholas Day (December 6th). This marks the start of baking "vanoenf cukrovf' — Christmas candies and sweets.

These are baked late into the night and put away in large boxes and stored on top of hard-to-reach cabinets to make sure that no uninvited fingers start in on them until shortly before Christmas. Each household has its special goodies which it proudly shares with other families and friends. Part of the holiday includes visiting friends and celebrating together.

Although Czechs celebrate both Christmas Eve (§tedrSr veeer) and Christmas Day (boil hod), most of the festivities take place Christmas Eve. Several days before the eve of Christmas "serious" preparations begin. A tree is bought, secretly brought into the house and hidden away in some cool, dark place -usually the basement. None are allowed to see it until after dinner for December 24th. December 23rd people make their way into the streets to buy the traditional Christmas fish — carp — for dinner.

Several days before the 24th huge wooden barrels magically appear in the cities, and the barrels have live carp swimming around in them.

Carp is farmed in southern Bohemia and shipped to the large cities around this time The prospective buyer points to the fish he or she wants and the fun begins. College students usually sell the carp and the most difficult, part of the job is trying to catch the fish. Most often the carp is taken home alive and allowed to swim in the family bath tub until it is killed on the morning of the 24th.

The night before Christmas Eve all hands are busy with last minute preparations. Some are wrapping gifts — others are decorating the house — still others are putting the potato salad that will accompany tomorrow's fish together, and finally, someone is making vd,nooky — Christmas bread made of a rich butter dough, full of nuts, raisins and candied fruit. The evening before Christmas Eve is one night that no one dares go to bed until every last detail has been taken care of. No one wants to be too busy on the 24th of December — after all, it is a day to be enjoyed by all as much as possible.

The morning of Christmas Eve is spent in trimming the tree and preparing dinner. Only the head of the household trims the tree, and only he or she can see the tree until that magic moment when Jeigek, the Christ child arrives. Jeffgek always comes after dinner, after all have finished everything that is on his or her plate.

Around five o'clock in the afternoon things get hectic.

Christmas goodies need to be set out on plates — the tree must be absolutely ready for viewing, the last gifts have to be wrapped, the table must be set, and the children looked after. The gifts are not put under the tree just yet — that

Texas currently boasts about 3,200 acres of Christmas trees, with some 1,000 trees per acre. Most of these are Virginia pines native to the Appalachian area of the southeastern U.S. Another species, the Afghan or Elderica pine, is now being grown in central, western and southern areas of Texas. The trees are generally ready to harvest in about four years.

"While the availability of Texasgrown trees continues to increase, most shoppers will likely have to go to the larger cities in Texas or to smaller communities in eastern areas where most of them are grown," says Walterscheidt.

Texas boasts some 50 "chooseand-cut" operations in which the shopper selects the tree, cuts it and takes it home. Members of the family stand and observe a silent moment, and then when mother gives the signal, all sit down at the same time to dinner.

Once all are seated, no one else is allowed to- get up, no matter what!

In some Czech families there is a custom of putting a small coin under each person's plate to symbolize wealth in the coming year. It is usually a crown piece (similar to our penny), and that crown piece is carried around by each person for good luck.

Children beg their parents to take small helpings so that dinner can come quickly to an end. All that is put on the plate must be eaten before the family can go together to the Christmas tree (and, of course, to the many brightly wrapped boxes). When dinner is finally over, all stand at the same time and wish each other a Joyous Christmas (Seastne a Vesele Vanoce). Then comes the embrace and finally all rush to the tree. Then the gifts are distributed. After all the gifts have been opened, the family sits and enjoys a quiet evening. Some join their friends and neighbors and sing Christmas carols — others attend midnight Mass, and, so, a Czech Christmas comes to a close.

Good homemade food is an important part of every Czech household. The midday meal is the largest meal of the day, usually including the famous Czech specialty "knedlfky" (bread dumplings) with meat and gravy.

Both breakfast and dinner are light.

Food shopping in Czechoslovakia is done quite differently from the way it is done in the United States.

Some of the new sections of large cities now do have shopping centers similar to the ones that we have here, however, in the downtown sections and in smaller cities one would have to go to several shops before getting all of the shopping done. Shops would include the bakery, the general store, the butcher shop, the greens grocer, and possibly the liquor store. Needless

to say, food shopping is a long, timeconsuming process.

Breakfast includes tea or coffee, dark rye bread, sweet butter and jam or honey. On special days or Sunday, "kolliee" — a filled sweet roll — make up the main part of breakfast. Leftovers are often incorporated into the dinner meal. It is not unusual to have a "sladka, veeefe" or a "sweet dinner" once a week. This could be anything from fruit dumplings in the summer to a jam-filled omelet in the winter.

Friday was traditionally a meatless day, so this was usually the day of a sweet dinner. Sunday dinner (the midday meal) is always special because, along with good food, it is a time for all members of the family to be together, to talk and relax, to catch up on the events of the passing week.

Central Europeans are noted for their holiday celebrating. The Czechs, Moravians, and Slovaks are no exception to this. Holidays are times of family reunions, cookie and cake baking, house cleaning and decorating, story telling and general fun making. The two main holidays that the Czechs celebrate are Christmas and Easter.

In addition to these events there are special holidays that each family, city or village commemorates on its own. The special days that are celebrated in 'a family would include birthdays and name days. A city or village, on the other hand, has a patron saint all its own and always celebrates the special day that is known as the holiday of that particular saint. The festivities include much music and dancing, in addition to wonderful food.

Items of Interest Children Can Choke On Food Parents who consider safety when buying their children's toys, or who carefully keep small objects out of the reach of little hands, often forget to use the same caution iin preparing children's food.

"Food asphyxiation accounts for as many childhood deaths annually as poisoning," says Dr. Mary Ann Heussner, a health education specialist with the Texas A &M University Agricultural Extension Service.

About 66 to 77 children die by choking Qn food each year, she reports. A recent study of children's food-related choking fatalities conducted by Johns Hopkins University found that more than 90 percent of the victims were under five, Heussner says. The risk was highest in one- and two-year olds and dropped substantially at age three.

The children choked most often on hot dogs. Other foods on the list were candy, peanuts and other nuts, grapes, cookies, meat, carrots, apples, popcorn and peanut butter, she notes.

Foods such as peanuts or hard, round candies should not be given to children younger than four or five, she advises. Foods that must be chewed should not be given to children until they have developed a complete set of teeth around age two.

Besides causing choking, another danger is that the food can go deep into the bronchial tubes or into the lungs themselves, says Heussner.

"It's not always easy to recognize that a child has inhaled food," cautions the specialist. The initial coughing fit may end and the child will appear to have recovered.

However, more serious symptoms such as pneumonia, may show up days or even weeks later.

Cocoa Vs. Carob Perhaps because of advertising, some consumers have the false perception that carob is nutritionally superior to cocoa, says a Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service nutritionist.

"When cocoa and carob are compared, cocoa is shown to have more nutrients than carob," says Mary K. Sweeten. Tests by the United States Department of Agriculture indicate that cocoa has more protein, calcium, phosphorous, iron, potassium, vitamin A, riboflavin and niacin than does carob powder, she explains.

Cocoa powder does contain more fat than carob, says Sweeten, which is one reason why some consumers select it However, the commercially manufactured carob products often rival those containing cocoa since vegetable fats such as palm kernel oil and coconut oil are added to make solid carob products. Both of these oils are more highly saturated than cocoa butter, she says.

Food products containing carob are often advertised as "natural foods," Sweeten observes. While some consumers may assume that "natural" foods are nutritionally superior to regular foods, this is often not the case, says the nutritionist.

Since there is no legal definition for the term "natural," Sweeten advises consumers to carefully read the food product labels before buying the food product. ***

"One of the prime motivations for giving to charity is to help those in need," says Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service home economist Nancy L. Granovsky. "Yet, the charity industry is one of the largest and least regulated, so consumers cannot always be sure their dollars are being used legitimately."

But consumers can now check-out charities just as they would any other type of business of investment, she says.

But we can only be successful if you help us by becoming involved in the fight against crime. I'll provide you with ideas on how to become involved in the months ahead through this column.

Windbreak Planning

Important COLLEGE STATION Trees can provide a lot of protection for those gusting winter winds, and the time to plan windbreaks is at hand.

However, actual planting time won't be until late winter or early spring.

"A windbreak planting can provide a comfort and protection zone," points out Dr. Michael Walterscheidt, forestry specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System. "Windbreaks also can be planted for livestock protection, wildlife habitats, Christmas tree production, fruit and nut production, and aesthetics?'

Properly designed windbreaks will provide full protection from wind to a distance of 10 times the height of the tallest trees and provide some protection out to 20 times the height of the tallest trees.

Density of windbreaks is also important, says Walterscheidt. A moderately dense windbreak acts as a filter and allows for less turbulence on the inside of the windbreak. Not only do windbreaks affect wind velocity, but they can reduce mid-day summer temperatures up to 5 degrees out to 20 times the height of the windbreak.

To begin preparations for a windbreak, mow or plow the site in early fall to help reduce weed competition, suggests the specialist.

If there is a chance of erosion, sow a cover crop during the winter, leaving a 2-foot-wide strip for the tree planting. Plow and disk the site again two to three weeks before planting. It is important to conserve soil moisture so seedlings will get off to a good start.

"When planning the windbreak, remember to keep trees 100 feet from the nearest structure and extend it beyond the farmstead 100 feet," says Walterscheidt. "If the windbreak is for livestock, it must be fenced for protection."

Many older windbreaks were planted with up to 10 rows of trees, which took lots of space, he notes.

However, research has shown that three rows of trees can be just as effective. Two rows should be conifers such as pine or juniper; the other can be hardwoods such as oak.

Never mix hardwoods in the row with conifers or mix various species of hardwoods in a row because of varying growth rates and crown shapes, cautions Walterscheidt.

Conifer rows should be at least 15 feet apart and hardwood rows should be 20 feet from the conifers.

(Continued Proceedings of the XXIVth Convention of the SPJST) I want to express my appreciation to them for their help and cooperation in this shift in direction and responsibility. I do not want to leave out the work of the local lodge youth leaders and their assistants and certainly not the parents and the youth themselves who are involved, in one way or another, with our youth activities.

Youth Department. I believe that the administration of the Youth Department is proceeding well. It is proceeding well because we have shifted much of the responsibility back to the District Youth Counselors (DYCs.) Some of the DYCs duties had "slid" over onto the State Youth Directors. In our November 1983 meeting of the seven DYCs, I stated that it was not my intention to hire another State Youth Director PROVIDED tliey (DYCs) would assume certain duties that ought to be theirs, such as being in charge of and conducting District Training Classes, District Youth Achievement Days, and Camps. They, in turn, have the help of their assistants and local lodge leaders.

This office will continue to help in any way possible. I do a lot of listening, but naturally, not everyone's wishes can be accommodated.

I believe with this realignment of responsibility there will not be a need for any additional Youth Department personnel, although that authority exists in our b y -laws(Art.3g)Moev,h administrative details have been more than ably handled by my secretary and me. I think I can say that the DYCs have accepted this new challenge and are handling it well. We are in constant (almost daily) communication. We are able to answer any inquiries the day they come in.

As far as expenditures are concerned, how do you compute the value of our Youth Program in dollars and cents? I think that is almost impossible because the end results come over a long term rather than a short term. It might be compared to our public education s ystem. How do you put a value on that? You won't know until the effects of education begin to take form after many years. I recently heard that there are those who think that we are spending too much money on our youth.

There are those who think we are not spending enough. I happen to think that we are spending about the right amount.

We seek a balance between too much and not enough. The appropriate proposals have been made for slight increases in the funding of two parts of our Youth Program and we hope these are approved in the convention.

There are numerous activities coming up in the months ahead and these have all been delineated in the Vestnik. Our main tool of communication is, in fact, our weekly organ, the Vestnik. With the continued cooperation between this office, the DYCs, and the local lodge youth leaders, I see no reason why things cannot continue to function as smoothly as they have in the last few months. If there is anything lacking or if there are any shortcomings, we will endeavor to correct these. I have been dismayed, however, over the past several years as to why more of our young people do not take advantage of what we have to offer. It's there and all they have to do is spend a little time and make some effort. I have stated many times that I realize that the SPJST is not the only organization involved in working with the youth. There are many others that compete for our young peoples' time and talents. We ask only that they devote a portion to SPJST youth activities. We cannot do it all, but we are doing our best to do our part. I thank those young people who actively participate in the various programs. We must be doing something right because I was recently called (and this wasn't the first time) and spent about 30 minutes on the telephone describing and explaining our youth program to an official of another Texas-domiciled fraternal Society who are just launching a youth program of their own. We've had one since the early 50's.

Automation. In line with keeping abreast of the times, we can now report that the implementation of the computerized/automated record system here in

the Home Office that the delegates authorized in the last convention is 100% operational and working efficiently.

Programs in the system are about 70% complete because this is a continuing and never-ending process. Hardly a day goes by that the programs are not enhanced in one way or another. Credit for the smooth transition from an almost total manual record-keeping system goes to the other officers and the excellent cooperation and adaptation of the staff of employees. The officers did the legwork in checking out systems in use in other fraternal Societies and then brought back that data and with the help of the employees, implemented the best of what they found. There were many training sessions here and in other cities. Consultants were called in and continue to be used. The system is working well. It's hard to believe that the transition was made so quickly and so "painlessly".

We have some good and loyal people here.

I decided that I would not involve myself directly in the automation process, but would instead play a secondary role by watching and asking an occasional question. I'm convinced that if I had done otherwise, it would have been counterproductive. There are instances when a president does more good by just being an observer and that has proven to be true.

After all, when you have several expert "cooks" preparing a meal, how much good can one more do besides just get in the way?

Growth And Progress. I have felt privileged serving as your president for these number of years. The record shows that our growth and progress during the decade from 1970 through 1980 was the period of the greatest growth in the history of our Society. I came into office on 1 January 1969. Here are some pertinent statistics for that decade: In 1970 we had just over 43,000 certificates; by 1980 this had increased to over 56,000 — again, the largest gain of any 10year period since 1897. Insurance in force in 1970 amounted to 65-plus million dollars; by 1980 it had more than doubled to over 147 million. Our assets in 1970 were over $17 million; by 1980 they had more than doubled to almost $30 million.

Premium refunds to members started in 1969 at which time they amounted to in excess of $222,000; by 1980 this premium refund had grown to over $320,000. The refund to lodges in 1970 amounted to just over $73,000; by 1980 it had grown to in excess of $165,000. Another barometer of our growth can be seen in the number of delegates in our conventions. In the 1968 convention we had 237 delegates; by 1984 we had 344.

During that same decade, 14 new lodges were organized and chartered. Twelve (12) new lodge buildings were built and dedicated, more than the combined total for the previous 40 to 50 years! The growth and progress in those two areas is reflected in the growth in certificates and insurance for that period.

During the recent meeting of the Press and Public Relations Section of the National Fraternal Congress held in Austin, it was the SPJST's privilege to host some 60 or 65 fraternalists in a chartered bus tour via Hwy. 95 from Elgin to Temple. Vice President Gebala and Director Sid Pokladnik had served as the On-Site Committee and made arrangements for the meeting site, the speakers, the tour and an excursion to a nearby Quarter Horse Ranch. During the tour on Hwy. 95 we took the group past the SPJST installations along that route and gave a brief explanation and historical briefing on each of the facilities. The trip culminated in a visit to the Supreme Lodge building and a tour of the Museum area and a reception and social at Lodge 47 Seaton.

At each of the installations along the way, the fraternalists from all over the United States made comments to the effect that we should be proud of the installations and the activities of the lodges that we visited.

The common statement was: "I don't know how you accomplished all of this. We are a much bigger Society and operate in several states and we have not achieved anything near what you have achieved operating only in Texas. How did you do it?" We tried to explain that first of all, what was achieved was due mostly to the hard work and perseverance of the members of those lodges and secondly, through the mutual

help, primarily financial, of the Home Office, that in most of the communities the local members saw a need for a physical facility to accommodate the needs of the lodge and of the community and that subsequently they were mutually supportive. Many questions were asked and we tried to give as good an answer as possible. One of the comments from the president of the National Fraternal Congress was that "You should be proud of what you have and especially of your members." I'll admit that our heads and hearts swelled a little with pride and we were glad that these people from the northern states admired what we have.

I am in no way claiming credit for this growth alone. Many people were responsible. In our organization such things cannot be accomplished by one person, however, it did happen during a decade when I was president of this Society and I think I can claim at least a portion of the credit. There is every indication that this growth will continue through the decade of the 80's.

History Project. The history of the SPJST covering the years through 1980 has been completed and is in the hands of the printer. It took me four years to complete, July 1977 to July 1981. A sub-committee has reviewed the text and the entire work will be subject to approval in the April 1984 Supreme Lodge Meeting. At that time, it is anticipated that the printer will be given the green light to proceed with printing a specific number of books and that some or all of the books will be ready by the time of the convention in June.

Privileged To Serve. I have appreciated the trust and confidence you have placed in me. I know of no person without some flaw. I am not a candidate for sainthood or canonization, neither am I a paragon of virtue. I have simply applied myself to doing the best that I could, and should you choose to re-elect me to another term, I will continue to do just that.

In looking over the roster of delegates I see a lot of familiar names, but I also see a number of new names of those who will be attending our convention for the first time.

With the thought in mind that the new delegates would like to know a little more about their president other than the fact that he is president, I would like to give you some highlights about myself: I was born and raised in Baylor County in West Texas, graduated from high school in the small town of Bornarton, which is no longer on the maps.

My parents were immigrants from the Provinces of Moravia and Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. We were a large family and I grew up bilingual, but I had no problem with the English language in school. At the time of his death, my father's English vocabulary consisted of about 100 words, having mostly to do with blacksmithing and farming. My father was a blacksmith by training, having come to Texas as a 19-year old man. He came from the village of Chlebovice in Northeastern Moravia. My mother's maiden name was Mares and she came from the village of Cermna northeast of Prague from whence many emigrated to the U.S. She came to this country as a 6-month old child. Both parents died when I was 4 and 11 years old, respectively. My stepmother came to Texas from the Moravian town of Franstat from whence many emigrated to Texas and the U.S. She came to America after World War I. After graduating from high school I worked in a filling station and saved enough for-a semester of college tuition at then North Texas State College in Denton, now North Texas State University. My education was interrupted by the draft.

Prior to serving a tour of duty in Korea I attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where the U.S. Army had sent me for intensive Russian language training. (I had studied Russian and German at North Texas). I then worked for the U.S. Government as a civilian employee in Washington, D.C. and West Germany where I had two tours of duty for a total of four years.

While in Germany I learned the German language fluently and had to use the Czech language almost daily in my work. (I used classical or formal Czech, as it were; spisovnou cestinu. Incidentally, I might add that having a Czech name does NOT necessarily mean that the individual has a good knowledge of the Czech language. I

believe that involves the ability to fluently speak, read, and comprehend it. Like anything else, this has to be acquired.)

After leaving government service I came back to North Texas, transferred my Russian language course hours from Cornell, and earned nine hours taking standing exams in the German language.

(This is credit without taking the course, based on written examinations.) After that I got a B.A. degree in Government at North Texas State University. I then taught school in the Mesquite and Dallas Independent School Districts for some 6 lh years. In the fall of 1963 I was urged by my Dallas Czech friends to apply for the job of editor of the SPJST Vestnik after the editor at that time passed away in the middle of his term. From a field of six applicants I was unanimously chosen by the Supreme Lodge to fill that position, effective 1 December 1963. I busied myself learning the SPJST "ropes" and the far-flung SPJST membership throughout the State of Texas. I was nominated for Supreme Lodge president in the 1964 Convention in Waco but declined because of not having been a member of the SPJST long enough at that time. I was nominated and elected president in the 1968 Convention in Dallas and have been serving in that capacity since 1 Jan. 1969. I had previously held district offices in District III. I had joined the SPJST in Dallas (Lodge 130) in 1957; later in Waco (No. 66) and currently we're all members of Lodge 47 in Seaton. I had earlier married Dorothy Liska of Ennis and we have five children.

Local Lodges. We owe a lot to the local lodges and their leadership. In some lodges, leaders are hard to come by; in others, there are contests for leadership positions. We could not function without the local leaders. They keep the lodge system working and responsive. God bless em all!

This just about completes my preconvention report and if I have anything else to report I will either prepare a supplemental report and pass it out at the convention or make it orally to the delegates. For further information on other phases of our operations, please refer to the other reports in this issue of the Vestnik — those of the other officers, directors, and standing committees.

I ask those who prefer reading this report in Czech to bear with me again because I simply did not have the time to prepare this lengthy report in the Czech language. Preparing a report like this in Czech means that I have to write it first in longhand, and since my secretary is not familiar with the language, it has to be retyped as many as three times and that gets tedious and takes a lot of work and time which we simply do not have in this preconvention period. I have done this in the past, but time simply did not permit it.

Finally, my wife joins me and our five children (all members) and four grandchildren (three are members) in extending our best wishes for a successful convention for an even greater four years to follow.

Our oldest son is a non-commissioned officer in the United States Air Force (recruited some years ago by then AF Rctg Sgt. Bernard Gebala) and is stationed in Alaska with his wife and young child.

Another son is working in Austin. Two sons remain at home, one working in the Temple area and the youngest is in the eighth grade in the Rogers Schools. Our daughter is living in Temple with her husband and three small children. The only grandchild not a member of the SPJST is the one currently residing in Alaska, but we plan to make him a member as soon as he sets foot on Texas soil.

May all of you enjoy an abundance of good health. The Good Lord and the SPJST have been good to us and we're grateful.

dobrk den-good day dobre rano - good morning dobre rano-good morning dobre jitro- good morning dobrk weer-good evening dobrou noc-good night sbohem-goodbye s Panem Bohem-goodbye na shledanou-see you later nazdar-- hello, cheerio The most useful term is "dobrk den". Its common usage is relatively new, but it has almost replaced "dobre odpoledne" meaning "good afternoon" and has been making inroads in replacing even "dobre rano" or "dobre jitro". "Dobry den" has replaced also quite a few overly polite greetings such as "poklona, ma Acta, rukulibam, etc." Good riddance.

"Dobre rano" is used more in the country, while "dobre jitro" is more common in the cities. "Dobre jitro" is becoming more and more common.

Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrktro", which is strictly colloquial.

"Sbohem" has a religious origin.

Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or Jdete) s Bohem" "Jdi" is singular, while "Jdete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God").

The religious meaning has been slowly lost in the common usage; therefore, it is written now as one word, "sbohem", instead of "s Bohem"..

The religious meaning has been largely preserved with the longer form of the same greeting "s Panem Bohem", and, therefore, it is usually written as three separate words with -capital letters. Literal translation wouldbe "with Lord God". Occasionally, you may see it written as one word, "spanem bohem".

"Dobrk weer" and "dobrou noc" is used similarly as in this country. The same is true of "na shledanou".

"Nazdar" was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country is was regarded as a special Sokol greeting.

This is no longer so. "Nazdar" is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively. When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of "dobrk den"would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with "nazdar". From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of "nazdar" is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American "hello", but also in parting, instead of "na shledanou" or "sbohem".
