Christmas at the Home Office

TO: ALL SPJST MEMBERS SUBJECT: DELETION OF CERTAIN SPJST PLANS OF INSURANCE AND OTHER INFORMATION

1. Effective immediately, SPJST will no longer offer for sale the following plans of insurance: JE-Endowment at Age 18 N-10 Year Endowment F-15 Year Endowment G-20 Year Endowment H-Continuous Premium Endowment at Age 65 1-20 Year Payment Endowment at Age 60 M-Retirement at Age 65 SPE-20 Year Single Payment Endowment SPL-Single Premium Life D-15 Payment Life E- / 0 Payment Life These plans will be withdrawn because they will not meet the definition of, a Life Insurance Contract as defined in the new 1984 Tax Act. Basically, this definition requires that the investment element in a life insurance certificate be subordinate to the death benefit element as established through elaborate formulas.

If these plans were allowed to be sold after 1-1-85, the Cash Value increase attributable to interest income would be currently taxed as ordinary income to the certificate owner.

The following plans of insurance cannot be offered after age indicated basically for the same reason as above: W-Life Paid-up at Age 85-cannot be issued after Age 65 K-Life Paid-up at Age 65-cannot be issued after Age 45

3.

Although the definition does not affect any certificates issued prior to 1-1-85, the plans in Paragraph 1 are withdrawn from further offering effective immediately.

The SPJST Annuity Program is currently paying 12% interest. This rate is guaranteed up thru January 31, 1985. There is a possibility the 12% rate will change (higher or lower). I can assure you that we will attempt to keep the rate as competitive as possible at all times.

Christmas is a time of giving! Christmas is a time of sharing! Pictured we see boxes filled with groceries and clothes donated by the Home Office staff, employees, and their families for the First House, Emergency Shelter for Abused Children, in Temple.

The First House is one of the many projects under the Department of Human Resources aided by the SPJST. All members of the SPJST are, urged to support this effort to help children and families experiencing problems with child abuse and neglect in their area.

The 1984 Christmas season is upon us here in the United States and all the world over and, yet, the sound of "Peace on Earth and Good Will to All" seems somehow hollow, in a way. Seems that a majority of us will have a nice season, however, when we stop and think about what is going on all over this planet called Earth, it brings us to a blunt reality of thought: Fighting in Ireland between the Catholics and Protestants, in the Mideast between the Arabs, Palestinians and Jews, between Iran and Iraq, in San Salvadore plus starving in Ethopia, dying of gas poisoning in India and so many smaller tragic things!

Wonder if it wouldn't be wiser if the "big powers" stopped manufacturing and selling arms to all these factions and let them throw racks at each other! It certainly would be less damage done! And we may have "Peace on Earth", etc. *** Statue of Liberty July 4, 1984 was a significant day for Lady Liberty. It was then that a large crane, mounted on the Statue's scaffolding, gently lifted Liberty's Torch from the arm that had held it aloft for 98 years.

December 15, 1984, the Torch, for the first time, will leave Liberty Island to begin a journey across America. The National Park Service is making this historic adventure possible and will provide safe escort.

Its destination is California, where Hilton Hotels Corporation and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association will present the Torch as the centerpiece of the lead float in the 96th Annual Rose Parade, with Lee Iacocca as its Grand Marshal. *** Fraternal Thoughts To All! Faith is a blessing-it lets one's soul trust in the goodness and mercy of the Supreme Being; and through that trust it gives one reason to believe that others, too, reason as you.

Hope is a blessing-it lets one's heart anticipate fulfillment through reliance in the daily affairs of living, it gives one confidence in the possibilities of many more satisfying tomorrows.

Charity is a blessing-it lets one's mind reach out with love for others, a love filled with thoughts and acts of kindness and generosity so that one becomes part of all in peace and brotherhood.

Faith, Hope, Charity: These are the spirits of Christmas that raise the human condition to its most beautiful and noble heights.

The Czechs, along with Moravians and Slovaks, have a long and rich tradition of food, festivity and folklore. It is not very difficult to find food mentioned along with great battles, magic creatures or heroic deeds in Czech mythology. As a matter of fact, even the famous Charles Bridge in Prague is said to have been constructed of eggs and cheese. Petr Parle y, architect of the bridge, built in 1214, sent a message to all Czech villages that eggs needed to be mixed into the mortar to make it strong enough to hold the bridge together for all ages. So all villages sent eggs to the capital city, and each village tried to outdo the others by sending more than was required. The citizens of the village of Unhog sent some milk along with their eggs, but the milk turned into cheese before it was mixed into the mortar, hence a bridge made of eggs and cheese. Indeed Charles Bridge is still standing today, strong as ever, as a testament to good food being put to a very good use.

Another myth is about a king and his three daughters. Now this king decided to test his daughters in order to find out which one loved him most. He asked them to answer the question: "If you could give your father only one thing, and you could choose from everything in the kingdom, what would be the most precious thing you would give me?"

His eldest answered that she would give him, "All the gold in the world."

"Silver," said the next daughter.

The youngest smiled and answered that she would give her father, "Salt." The king was outraged! Was it possible that his daughter loved him so little that she would give him only a common, ordinary kitchen spice. Then the king tried to live without salt in his diet. Very quickly he realized that salt was far more important than all the gold and silver in the world. And so, even to this day, it is customary to greet a visitor in a Czech home with a slice of dark break sprinkled with salt. *** COLLEGE STATION-This year don't settle for just any type of Christmas tree. Instead, make sure it's a genuine Texas-grown Christmas tree.

"Texas-grown Christmas trees should be available in most areas of the state this year," says Dr. Mike Walterscheidt, forester with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A &M University System. "Although most are grown in eastern counties, consumers should find them in retail lots throughout the state.

"Texas-grown Christmas trees offer a number of advantages," notes Walterscheidt. "They are fresher, more fragrant and usually less expensive than those shipped in from other states. Most are cut around Thanksgiving while those shipped in from northern states are cut in October."

Anyone interested in a Texasgrown Christmas tree can contact their county Extension agent for a listing of tree farms, adds the forester.

Cottonwcod, have planned our Christmas Party which will be held Sunday, December 16th. A social will start at 3 p.m. with a meal of turkey and dressing to be served.

All members are asked to bring a covered dish.

After supper the youth members will present their program followed by a visit from Santa Claus and the exchange of gifts.

We would like to invite all the Supreme Lodge officers and their wives, also the Editor and his family to the Christmas Party. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Lodge 6 Elects Officers The regular monthly meeting of Cottonwood Lodge was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 1984.

President Robert Dobecka asked Shirley Dobecka and Tammi Dobecka to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance, also Shirley led the SPJST Pledge.

All officers were present. There were eighteen members present.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read. All other reports were in order.

Correspondence was read from the Alfonse Hrabal, Jr. family and the Supreme Lodge.

The youth report was given by Sister Willie Mae Schuetz. She reported the youth donated chips and dips for the Appreciation Party and they also played Bingo. The youngsters are also making Christmas cards for the Rest Home.

They will be taking cakes to the

Rest Home, December 5th. Then, December 21 the youth will have a bake sale at the Leroy Bank, they will take the gifts to the Rest Home and then they will have a party afterwards at the hall. The club will be selling tickets on a cannister set and travel bag set at the Christmas Party. They are looking forward to putting on their Christmas Program, December 16th. Raymond Hromadka brought the Birthday Cake.

Board of Trustees' report was given by Brother George Straten.

Items to be given considered by the membership were token gifts to be given to the cooks who have worked very hard with the lodge for several years.

The Appreciation Party was a success and everyone had a good time.

Ceremony Held At Lodge 17 Dear Members: New Tabor Lodge held its annual meeting December 2 with all officers present.

We had no new members. The Resolution of Sympathy was read for Sister Christine Vavra.

We discussed our plans for the Christmas Dinner and Memorial Service.

The Youth Club presented their Christmas which was enjoyed by all.

We had a traditional turkey dinner also enjoyed by all.

I, as kitchen chairman, would like to thank all the people who helped to make this an enjoyable time. This not only means the cooks but everyone from setting up to cleaning up; without you it would not have been possible! Thank you very much!

Lodge 47, Seaton Appoints Committees Dear Members and Friends: Our December 2, 1984 meeting was very well attended. President Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Daryl Kortis and Tim Wilson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased brother, Jody Bartek. May his soul rest in peace.

Visitors welcomed to this meeting were: Ann Balusek, Lillie Hejl, Mary Fojtasek, Mrs. Gertie Kahlig, Lonnie and Olga Schroeder, Freddie Schroeder and Helen Boykin. Please come, again.

Reported on the sick list were: Joe Marinik, Clarence Dubcak, Raymond Bragewitz, Arnold Dubcak, Dorothy Morris, Shirley Patterson and Georgie Pavlica. We wish all of you a speedy recovery.

Jerry Pechal thanked Martha and Alfred Klusacek and everyone else who came to help put on tablecloths for the Cameron Party. He also reported that Matt Sladky from Nebraska will play at our lodge Wednesday, January 16, 1985 and Moostash Joe will be at our Lodge February 21, 1985. Mark these dates on your calendar and'please come!

Anton Motl, outgoing parliamentarian, thanked everyone for their support in the past. He has served on some committee or office continually for the past 33 years and thinks he would like to sit in the audience for a change. The members gave him a standing ovation. I am sure we will have a job for Anton somewhere along the way. He won't get to rest for long! Willie E. Kohutek also thanked everyone for the courtesy extended to him the past 16 years as financial secretary.

Emil Hejl, cleanup chairman, thanked everyone who pitched in to help clean the hall while he and his wife celebrated their 50th anniversary with their children. Congratulations again to a fine couple!

Board minutes were read by Vallie Zavodny. Audit Committee announced there will be an audit of all books Friday, January 4, 1985. (It is hard to believe another year has slipped by us!)

President Pechal thanked Brother Nick Morris for the fine job he did on the SPJST History Book. Those of you who did not get one are certainly missing out on some good history.

This is my last letter to the Vestnik as a reporter because I will take over as financial secretary for 1985. I have enjoyed writing to the Vestnik and a special thank you to Rudy and Maxine Sefcik for their patience the past few years for putting up with my typing and/or handwriting which is even worse.

Also, I wish a very Merry Christmas from our members at Seaton to all our special friends and relatives in nursing home and all shut-ins. We love all of you and miss you at our meetings; also to all our friends and relatives everywhere, especially one in Virginia who was supposed to come help us cook turkeys at Star Hall for our Christmas party and never did show up! Of Lodge 54 Meeting & Santa's Visit

Results

The fourth quarterly meeting and Christmas Party were held by Lodge 54 in West, Sunday, December 2 with 64 members present.

President Rudy Sefcik convened the meeting at 2 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sister Shirley Polansky.

A moment of silence was observed in honor of all brothers and sisters who have departed since our SPJST's founding in 1897, especially those who have died during this past year.

President Sefcik offered to translate the proceedings into the Czech language for anyone who may have difficulty understanding English but this was declined.

Lodge members who are on the sick list were remembered, these being Brother Frank Kellner, Brother Henry Grossman and Sister Leona Hanzlicek. A speedy recovery is wished for all of these named.

Sister Emery held roll call of officers. All were present except Youth Leader Mona Zahirniak.

Secretary Anne Emery read items of correspondence and minutes of the third quarterly meeting. These were approved as read.

Brother Sefcik reported on results of the meetings with Sokol representatives and Lodge 54 Committee members regarding the proposed merger. Progress has been made and the business will be completed as soon as a few legal technicalities are resolved.

Santa Claus pays visit to Lodge 54 Christmas Party held December 2nd. The youth enjoyed Santa's distribution of the traditional bags of goodies.

Financial Secretary and Treasurer Maxine Sefcik gave the financial reports of the Insurance and Hall Accounts. These were approved as read. The books were also audited for the past three months and were found in order.

It was noted that our lodge has 692 members on the books, 389 active and 302 paid-up members.

There were four conversion policies, two converted term policies and one additional coverage issued before ending of the last quarter.

President Sefcik expressed thanks to Brother Freddie Kaluza for all the help he has given our lodge. This is greatly appreciated by all members.

Vice President Ted Kocian didn't have anything to report.

Sister Sefcik remarked about the quick response that she had from the Supreme Lodge when she requested insurance plan code descriptions on the types of policies held by our members. She received a computer printout with all the information and she appreciates the cooperation given our lodge in these matters.

The sales representatives were recognized; namely John Mynar, Ervin Pustejovsky, Ted Kocian and Rudy Sefcik. He also spoke on the SPJST bylaw that was approved by the delegates at the last convention pertaining to eliminating the number of delegates per lodges and he encouraged the members to recommend prospects to our sales representatives so we can increase our membership, which includes this year.

Sister Sefcik moved that the quarterly meetings be held on the second Sunday of March, June, September and December rather than the first Sunday because this enables the treasurer to reconcile the bank account when the last day of the month falls so close to our lodge meeting. The motion was seconded, passed and carried. The first quarterly meeting of 1985 will be held at 3 p.m. March 10.

Vice President Ted Kocian presided over election of officers for 1985. A motion was made to re-elect all present officers by acclamation, with the exception of the treasurer which President Sefcik explained would give a broader representation of officers. There being no other nominations off the`floor, the motion

was seconded, passed and carried.

He did feel that the treasurer and President should be in one family for the good of the lodge.

Serving as lodge officers are: President-Rudy Sefcik Vice President-Ted Kocian Secretary/English Reporter-Anne Emery Treasurer-Freddie Kaluza Financial Secretary-Maxine Sefcik Czech Reporter-Jan Vaculik The Audit Committee includes Brother John Emery, Sister Beanie Kacir and Sister Mona Zahriniak.

Brother Sefcik mentioned the Child Abuse Program which was approved also at the last convention, to support and contribute as much as we can for the benefit of the competitive insurance companies that would like to see fraternal organizations pay more taxes. The Child Abuse Program is under the supervision of SL President Howard Leshikar. If any of our members make a large contribution to this program, you should advise Brother Leshikar in Temple and, submit an article with a photo so it can be published in the Vestnik. He mentioned that our lodge should have a member representing the CA/N program.

Brother Kocian thanked Sister Maxine Sefcik for the lovely decorations that adorned the hall and the beautiful Christmas tree. (This was also with the assistance of Bubba Sefcik and Melissa Recek.)

Charlene Sulak won the door prize.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. While everyone was enjoying refreshments and fellowship Santa Claus made an appeitiance much to the delight of all youngsters present. Bags of goodies were distributed and pictures were taken of Santa and the children.

A delicious covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Brother John and Sister Willie Mae Sulak, plus those who brought such a fine variety of dishes and pastries.

We also wish to thank Rev. Lawrence and Sister Barbara Junek and their son for taking time sharing the seasonal festivities.

A moment of silent prayer was observed for our devoted Brother Ernest "Muckey" Seidel, 73, who passed away recently. Our sympathy is extended to the family.

On the sick list, we have Sister Ruth Whitman in a hospital. We wish her, or any others who are ill, a speedy recovery.

The Abuse Children Program was again discussed. It was decided to make that our 1985 lodge's project to .collect clothing (girls and boys ranging in ages from 7 to 17 years) or donations for the Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch near Yoakum. Anyone who has items to donate can bring them to our lodge meetings or leave them at the Warrenton Store.

Brother Ralph Beard, chairman, will personally see that it will get all delivered to them.

President Bergmann thanked the outgoing Food Committee for a job well done. Then he appointed the Food Committee for January, February and March consisting of Sisters Amanda and Lydia Quade, Tinny Ziese and Brother Lee Leonhardt.

He also expressed thanks to those who prepared or brought food for the Christmas dinner, brought and decorated the yule tree, and anyone who helped with the various chores to have made this an enjoyable Christmas Party.

The meeting adjourned, then the party commenced. The gift exchange created much pleasure; soon all enjoyed delectable bakedham, turkey and dressing, a great variety of delicious side dishes, desserts and refreshments.

Election of Officers Slated for Lodge 180 Our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Louis Grochoske, November 20 in Burleson.

Absent from roll call were Cindy Hampton, Flag Bearer Glenda Young, Treasurer Randy Wickers,

Youth Leader Donna Looney, and Reporter Estelle Hurtik. All other officers and committee chairmen made their reports.

President Grochoske thanked all who are helping to keep the lodge running. Many thanks to Joe Hurtik for insulating the walls in the well house. We hope this will prevent the pipes and water tank from freezing in future winters.

A small number of people came to our Friday night Polka Dance with the Jim Bochnicek band from Nebraska, but those who did come enjoyed it immensely.

Our thanks to Lodge 154 for the delicious dinner served at the Metroplex Lodges' Christmas Party and, of course, the music was enjoyed by all.

Rest Home No. II for the month of November. We haye also added new members to our staff: LVN Yolanda Orduna; Nurses Aides: Sandra Brown, Jacqulyn Hickey and Bobbie Armstead.

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond are Francis Jacob and William Foytik. We are sorry to hear Hulda Richter is hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital and wish her a speedy recovery.

We regret the loss of Henry Schumacher and Louise Horak.

Henry and Louise will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Our sympathy to LVN Mary Trevino and LVN Agnes Martinez for the loss of their sister, Herlinda Hernandez.

The Senior Citizen Luncheon, held at the United Church of Christ was attended by Betty Lehmann, Tony Ondracek, Victor Bartosh, Marie Bertram and Marie Anders. The Senior Citizen Social, held at the United Church of Christ, was

attended and enjoyed by Tony Ondracek, Marie Bertram, Martha Wleczyk, Betty Lehmann and Emma Tielke.

The residents had a craft booth in the Harvest Fest, November 3, 1984.

Volunteers who helped were Elsie Mahlmann, Melva Hastings, Sophie Cario and Lydia Hartman; Martha Marx, activity director, and resident Betty Lehmann.

Thursday evening, November 15, at 4:45 p.m. the St. Michael's CCD group visited and entertained with singing. Residents enjoyed the singing.

November 17, the residents had a bake sale at-the home to raise money for their activity fund. Ladies from the various churches donated the cakes. Volunteers who helped with the bake sale were Melva Hastings, Elsie Mahlmann and Lydia Hortman. The residents who helped were Louise Jane, Betty Lehmann, Emma Tielke and Minnie Schulz.

The cakes and the volunteers were greatly appreciated.

Monday afternoon, November 19 the Fort Bend Humane Society brought young dogs for therapy for the residents. Afterwards, Betty Schulz and Elverna Graeber served the residents with birthday cake that was for Minnie Schulz.

Residents enjoyed the cakes.

Monday afternoon, November 26, residents Louise Jane and Marie Reed and Martha Marx (activity director), enjoyed the visit to the Library.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of November were residents: Minnie Schulz, Walter Schulz, Annie Walcik, Francis Illavaty, Annie Zich and Albina Foroi; Staff: Ella Bolden, Cora Johnson and Carol Folkens.

The Birthday Party, which was held Friday, November 30, included Richard Cid and Stephen E. Arceneaux singing "Happy Birthday" and Christmas carols.

The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres and the Baptist Church ladies of Needville provided the cakes and brought balloons that said "Happy Birthday". The Baptist ladies helped serve the coffee, punch, cake and ice cream to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches in the area that give services and communion and to the other volunteers who do services in the home to the residents for the month of November.

1984 American Czechoslovakian Day at the State Fair of Texas The American-Czech Culture Society wishes to express its thanks to the many participants on the program, assuring a successful day of activity.

The eye-opener (so many had to travel long distances, thus arose early) to the Czech Day was the Czech Mass, celebrants being Very Rev. Msgr. George Tydlacka and Bishop Thomas Tschoepe. The

Then, in the Band Shell, where most of the remaining activity took place, our thanks go to the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, The Sokol gymnasts, SPJST Lodge No. 84 "Little Dancers", Ennis Czech Choir, Wilber, Nebraska Czech Choir, Singers, Helen Sampson and Stephanie Becan, The Ukranian Dancers, Accordianists Johnny Hubacek, Andrew Potiska, Mark Holub, Joe Sykora and Norman Blazek and The Lone Star Czechs Band of Ennis.

Also, thanks to all who wore native Czech costumes, especially the ladies who have the patience to maintain their dresses in perfect condition in keeping them so colorful. Our appreciation also gois to the Beseda Dancers, the youngsters singing in Czech, speakers Jerry Bartos and Glenn Hutka, Master of Ceremonies Robert Podhrasky and his assistant program coordinators; and, we are grateful to all those who manned the souvenir, coffee and kolache booths, refreshment center and hot lunch stand.

Our final thanks go to all of you who attended and participated as our audience, helping to perpetuate the Czech language, customs, songs and dances and displaying your enthusiasm as the programs evolved.

Now that the new calendars are appearing at your favorite source of supply (SPJST, for certain,) please mark Sunday, October 6, 1985, the 45th Annual American-Czech Day at the Dallas Fair and plan to attend.

Czech Mass At Moravia There will be a mass in Czech at the Ascension of Our Lord Church in Moravia, Texas February 3, 1985 at 10:30 a.m. Bishop Morskovsky will be the main celebrant of the mass in honor of the Blessed Agnes of Bohemia.

Following the mass there will be a barbecue beef and sausage lunch catered at the parish hall. If you wish to eat lunch with us send $4.25 to: Moravia Cztch Day Thadious T. Polasek Route 4, Box 79 Schulenburg, Texas 78956 If you live in the area and wish to

save $.25 and postage, come to a mass at the Ascension of Our Lord Church and, after mass, you will be able to purchase a ticket. No tickets will be sold by mail after January-15, 1985. And no tickets will be sold at the door because the meal is catered and the caterer needs to know in advance how many plates need to be prepared.

At two, following the lunch, a cultural program will begin in the Ascension parish hall. The program will consist of: Singing of traditional Czech Texan songs and folk songs and there will be a display of Czech Texan folk art. If you have a kroj, come dressed in the kroj.

Ladies' Circle Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our November meeting was opened by our President, Mary Powers, welcoming all visitors.

The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and approved.

Phyllis Cihacek was called upon to give the Nominating Committee's report on the selection of candidates for offices for the coming two years.

Persons submitted for nomination were: For President-Florence Greer Vice-President-Dona Hubenak Secretary-Frances Grizzard Treasurer-Evelyn Spacek Motion was made and seconded to elect these persons by acclamation.

Motion carried, and the installation of the new officers will be at the December 11th meeting.

Flora Koci was appointed reporter again and Lillie McMillen accepted the position of Sunshine Committee chairperson again.

Maggie Konecny graciously accepted the position of Hostess chairperson again. Thanks go to these persons for doing a good job in the past!

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Flora Koci, Lillie McMillen, Victor Murphy, Ida Mayer, Agnes Merlick and our visitor, Elma Anderson.

We are always proud of our young graduates. Both Dona Hubenak and Mary Palachek have granddaughters graduating from A&M Dec. 10, 1984. Congratulations to both of them!

Our Christmas Dinner was December 11th. Ham furnished by the Ladies' Circle was prepared by Victor Murphy and Mary Powers.

All other members were asked to bring the same food that they brought for our Thanksgiving Dinner. All guests paid $3.00 for their dinner.

Hostesses for December were Josephine Prochaska, Frances Simmank, Victor Murphy, and Bessie Prochaska.

Catherine Kasarek donated the door prize.

Florence Greer was in charge of the Christmas program. All members, who wished to participate in gift giving, brought a gift valued around $3.00.

REPORT ON NOVEMBER PROJECT Dear Youth Members: The listing below shows those of you who completed the questions on the November Project.

The youth and youth leaders, as always, are to make note of the listing and record the number of points earned.

A total of 80 youth members participated in the November Project. This is one more than participated in the October Project.

I'm sure you found the December Project on Czechoslovakia in last week's Vestnik. We hope that all youth members will take time to do this project and thus become better acquainted with Czechoslovakia as it relates to present world affairs.

wimums■■=1 COMBINED COTTONWOOD YOUTH CLUB MONTHLY ACTIVITIES Dear Readers, The November meeting was held the 18th with a good attendance. We had four guests, Jeff and Josh Hykel and Renee and Denise Vrana. We were glad to have you; come again!

Our youth club went to Six Flags.

There were fifteen youngsters and twelve adults who reported having a wonderful time.

For the October 26 Halloween Party a costume contest and a spookhouse were held. Afterwards, we enjoyed hot dogs, punch plus other goodies that were served to everyone attending.

November 3 the clubbers donated

to the bake sale, donated bingo prizes to the Leroy-Tours-Gerald Fire Department, also cakes to the West Rest Haven, and bingo gifts to the West Sokol Gymnastics Association.

Our Lodge 6 Appreciation Party was attended by a large number.

The club members had a free bingo and served chips and dips before supper, that everyone enjoyed.

Birthday celebrants for November were Michele Mach, Christi Mach, Marvin Mynar, Jr., and Darrell Uptmor. Delton Stuckly brought the cake.

The youth members are working on their Christmas gifts and program. *** Our recent youth club meeting was held, Sunday, December 2, again with a good attendance.

It was reported that the club will donate cakes to the West Rest Haven, December 5, also will donate to the Metallic Age Group of St. Paul's Church of Gerald.

December 7 the club planned to decorate the hall, put up the Christmas tree, and other items, including practice for their program.

December 14 they decided to get the gifts ready for the Rest Home and practice for the Christmas Program.

Our Christmas Party will be December 16 with a social beginning at 3 p.m., supper at 5 p.m., youth program after supper with Santa Claus and exchange gifts, give fruit bags to the children.

December 21 the club members will take gifts to the Rest Home, also will have a bake sale at the Leroy Bank, then the youth will have a Pizza Party plus games at the lodge.

Birthdays in December are for Kevin Mach and Beckie Mynar.

Raymond Hromadka brought the cake.

Brother Hohlt was born 3 November 1922 in Welcome, Texas, the son of Robert and Meta Bocklemann Hohlt. He was baptized November 26, 1922 in Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome and was confirmed December 20, 1954 in the same church.

He attended Welcome Public School and was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome, also a member of SPJST Lodge 33 in Bleiblerville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 20 from the Brenham Memorial Chapel with Rev. Alvin Luedke of Welcome officiating. Burial was in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Meta Hohlt of Welcome; brother-in-law, Henry Schroeder of Bellville; sister-in-law, Gertrude Hohlt of Brenham; four nephews, Charles Schroeder, Glynn Schroeder, Gary Hohlt and Danny Hohlt.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and one sister.

Pallbearers were Charles Schroeder, Glynn Schroeder, Gary Hohlt, Danny Hohlt, Le Roy Grebe and Harold Hohlt.

FEATURES

Executive Homemakers Name Woman Of Year Anita Roye has been named by the Executive Homemake'is Club as their "Woman of the Year," based on points earned for participating in club and community activities and serving as an officer and on committees.

The Executive Homemakers Club was formed in February of this year.

Members meet once a month for fellowship and programs which benefit the family, home and community.

Previous programs have included couponing, packing for travel, poison prevention, diseases of the heart, fiber in the diet, gardening and house plants.

Future programs will include monogramming, home canning and crafts.

Mrs. Roye is vice president of the club and serves as chairman of the Mrs. Anita Roye program committee and the educational committee. She is also a mittee and has worked at the county programs and presented a program member of the council program com- fair, attended special county to her club.

Along with the other members, she is selling pecans and peanuts as a county-wide moneymaking project.

Mrs. Roye is employed as a bookkeeper by Multi-Fab Metals. Her office is in her home, which enables her to schedule her work around her children's activities. She and her husband, Bobby, have three children: Stephanie, 10, Valerie, 6, and Crystal, 2.

She enjoys sewing for herself and her daughters, and likes to add "that personal touch" with monogramming on both their things and for gifts.

Mrs. Roye also enjoys refinishing furniture. "Usually I look for bargain pieces and refinish them myself. Most of my treasures have been in my family for years, including a trunk my greatgrandmother brought from Czechoslovakia."

One good example of this is Sheri Prasatik Cole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Prasatik of Austin, Texas, who was granted a student loan several years ago to assist her to pursue her studies at the University of Texas where she received her Bachelor's degree and then her Masters degree with high honors.

Sheri then entered Purdue University to study toward her Doctoral degree in the field of medical chemistry. She expects to complete her Doctoral thesis in January 1985, and then will be ready to accept one of the several interesting offers she has recently received because of her work at Purdue on antibiotic synthesis by microbes. Abbott Laboratories, Inc. of Chicago have asked her to join their organization immediately after graduation and the British leader of genetics, Dr. David Hopwood interested in her research project, wants her to come to collaborate in his work at his laboratory in Norwich, England.

While studying at Purdue, Sheri met a University of Texas PhD graduate, Dr. Tom Cole who was doing post graduate work under Dr. Herbert C. Brown, head of the Dept. of Chemistry. Dr. Brown is widely known in the chemistry field as he was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1979. Both Sheri and Tom Cole are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such an illustrious and learned man.

In the spring of 1982 Sheri and Tom went back to Austin to be married, and now live in Lafayette, Indiana.

This is only one of several success stories wherein students (high school and college) have benefited through the availability of funds in the CESAT loan program. To cut costs on a Thanksgiving or Christmas bird, Extension food and nutrition specialist Dr. Alice Hunt suggests that consumers buy an unbasted, store brand turkey. Prebasted store brand turkeys will cost more per pound than un-basted birds, and national brand pre-basted turkeys will cost even more, she says.

But turkey is still a good value, Hunt says, especially if you plan ahead to make good use of the leftovers. Smaller families or those who don't care for leftovers may want to consider purchasing a turkey breast or a boneless roast turkey for their holiday meal, even though these cost more per pound.

Whatever the cost of your holiday turkey, you'll be getting high quality protein for your money and relatively few calories, observes the specialist. An average 3-1/2 ounce serving of turkey has 190 calories.

Holiday Buffet Safety COLLEGE STATION — Holiday buffets offer both a creative and efficient way to entertain a large number of guests in a limited space.

But serving meals buffet style requires extra food safety precautions, says a Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service food and nutrition specialist. The two basic rules to remember are to keep hot food hot and cold food cold, explains Marilyn Haggard.

Instead of setting out large buffet servings, try smaller ones, replenishing the food as needed from the stove or refrigerator, she suggests. If meat, poultry or egg dishes are left at room temperature for more than two hours, food poisoning bacteria may have an opportunity to grow. Frequent refilling ensures that these foods will remain safe to eat.

Heated serving dishes, such as hot trays or chafing dishes, are great for keeping food warm and tasty, Haggard says, but they may not keep foods at a high enough temperature to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Hot foods should be kept hot (between 140 degrees F and 165 degrees F) until served.

Cold meats, potato salads, meat salads and other cold foods should be stored in the refrigerator at 40 degrees F or below until served, notes the specialist.

After eating, cover and refrigerate all perishables immediately, especially meat and poultry products. Divide large meats and other foods into smaller portions. Food in smaller portions cools more quickly to temperatures where bacteria quit growing, advises Haggard.

Buying Guidelines For Crabmeat COLLEGE STATION-Blue crabmeat season is here, and many Texans will want to enjoy this delicacy - especially around the holidays. But, like any other perishable food, care must be taken to select high quality erabmeat in order to avoid a food-borne illness, says a Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service seafood specialist.

Crabmeat is highly perishable and is frequently eaten as purchased without further cooking or other processing which would kill any contaminating bacteria present, says Annette Bedell Hegen. The meat is moist and high in protein which makes it an ideal growth material for bacteria. "That's why it's so important thatEue eralitheit be processed and handled safely, from cooking to final consumer use," she adds.

Buy crabzneat only from reputable and licensed dealers, emphasizes Hegen. According to law, no person can operate a plant or place of business engaged in handling and packaging shellfish without a valid certificate issued by the State Commissioner of Health, she notes.

Also, make sure the container is permanently and legibly marked with the words "Perishable-Keep Under Refrigeration," advises the specialist. Containers should bear a code indicating the day of processing and the name of the

picking plant. "Beware of crabmeat in unmarked containers," she says, "since it may have been cooked, picked and packed under unclean conditions, at too low temperature for too short a time."

Crabmeat packaged under a label containing a license number and properly stored and displayed, should cause no worries for consumers. These licensed products, processed under state surveillance, makes it possible for consumers to enjoy one of the best delicacies from Texas waters, Hegen points out.

Texas license numbers consist of the state abbreviation and a number such as TX 987C or TX 654CP. Without this number, consumers have no assurance of the sanitary quality or safety of the product, she. adds.
