District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr is introducing reigning District III King and Duke, Richard Andreason and his brother, Brandon Andreason.

Vicki Gerlich played a piano solo at the District III program. She also was invited by the SPJST Supreme Lodge to perform at the Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Spectacular held at Kerrville in October. Vicki is reigning as the first runner-up District III Queen and 1st place State Winners in Arts/Crafts. The most powerful symbol of our nation's liberty is in a serious state of disrepair. This is why the editor is asking as many SPJST members to join in one of the most unique undertakings in American history. Let us endeavor to help save the Statue of Liberty.

As a charter member of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Register of Contributors, you will play a unique role in helping restore and preserve, for future generations, one of our nation's greatest treasures: THE STATUE OF LIBERTY. In appreciation for your involvement in this historic task, your name will be permanently recorded in the archives of the Statue of Liberty, as an individual who stepped forward to help preserve this vital part of our nation's heritage.

July 4, 1986, Americans all across the country will join together in a national celebration of the 100th anniversary of our Statue of Liberty.

Virtually every state in the union will participate in this celebration with street festivals, parades and special events of all kinds. But the center of the celebration will be at the Statue itself.

A ceremony at the foot of the Statue attended by the President, the Ambassador of France and dignitaries from all over the world will be held to rededicate the Statue of Liberty to the American people and launch her into her second hundred years.

As part of the celebration, "Operation Sail '86" is making plans to organize a parade of tall ships from ports from every corner of the globe that will pass by the Statue in solemn salute.

President Ford called Operation Sail '76 the "crowning event of the nation's Bicentennial celebration," witnessed by approximately six million people gathered along the shore of New York Harbor and by millions more on television.

It is fitting that these magnificent sailing vessels from many nations salute the great lady and all she stands for to the many people who have molded our great nation.

The dedication ceremony will be climaxed with a dazzling fireworks display over New York Harbor.

As a member, you will receive an official centennial invitation, along

with a listing of the events and activities you might wish to take part in.

'During a key part of the dedication activities, your name will be officially entered into the Register of Contributors and deposited into the permanent archives of the Statue of Liberty Museum.

Your name and your participation in this effort will be on permanent display for all who visit the Statue to see.

For generations to come, your children and your children's children will be able to read of the part you played in restoring and preserving, for them, this enduring symbol of freedom and individual liberty.

Now, early in the heating season, is the time to make sure that fireplaces and wood stoves are in good working order.

Burning wood. The revival of wood as a heating fuel — largely in response to the higher cost of oil and natural gas — has led to a rash of house fires. But many of these fires could have been prevented with proper maintenance, says the Insurance Information Institute.

Chimney. The No. 1 cause of fires involving fireplaces, inserts and stoves that burn wood or coal is creosote buildup in the chimney.

Have your chimney checked and cleaned at least once a year by a competent chimney sweep, and inspect it yourself twice a month for creosote, soot, other obstructions or damage.

The right sound. One way to check a metal chimney for buildup is to tap it with a metal object, such as a coin or screwdriver. A clean pipe should make a ping noise, a dirty pipe a dull thud.

Operation. Regularly test the operation of draft louvers, dampers, doors and screens. Also, inspect your fireplace or wood stove for cracks in the masonry or metal. If any part of your unit isn't working properly, get it repaired immediately.

Grate. Under the tremendous heat of a fire and the weight of logs, fireplace and wood-stove grates can get out of shape. This can minimize the efficiency of your unit, cause damage and even create a fire hazard. Replace a damaged grate before building another fire.

Fire starters. Never start a fire by using gasoline, kerosene or any flammable liquid. Instead, use small strips of paper or twigs. Don't burn newspapers, gift wrapping or trash.

Burning paper can be carried up the chimney, possibly igniting any creosote deposits. Paper burns too quickly and too hot. Also, ink on colored paper can emit dangerous lead fumes when burned.

Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, November 4, 1984 at the Grant Bldg., with Lodge President Frank Zabransky presiding. Janell Chudej led the members in the pledge to the U.S. Flag.

Gaye Galetka read Resolutions of Sympathy for our departed members, Rosie Spanihel and Joseph Sklar.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved.

Correspondence followed.

A report was given on the District VI fall meeting held at Taiton in October. Also Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka reported.

Election of Officers were held with all present officers being reelected to serve for another year.

Following other business, refund checks were given out and meeting adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served.

Members present with an October, November or December birthday included: Anton Bollom, Frank Zabransky, Janell Chudej, Evelyn Holy, August Neubauer and Albert Kahanek. Brother Anton Bollom won the Birthday cake.

Door prize winners were AdultAugust Neubauer and YouthNicholas Vahalik.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, December 9th at the Grant Bldg. beginning at 2 p.m. This will be our Christmas meeting and the youth club plans to put us in the holiday spirit. Refreshm,ents and

6 To Hold Christmas Party

Lodge

SPJST Cottonwood Lodge 6 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m.

Lynette Hykel and Tammi Dobecka led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lynette then said the SPJST Pledge. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed member, Brother Alfonse Hrabal, Jr. There were twenty-three members present with one guest, David Lednicky.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Correspondence was read from the District III secretary and from the A. B. Plunkett family.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth made silk flower arrangements in 2-liter bottles.

October 26 we had our Halloween Party and costume contest. The youth donated to the St. Paul's Bazaar; to the West Rest Haven, November 7 for their Birthday Party; to Leroy Gerald Fire Department chili supper and to Sokol 5th anniversary celebration.

Kitchen report was given by Sister Martha Monthei. She asked everyone to bring a covered dish to go with turkey and dressing for our Christmas Party. We also want to thank John Sulak for barbecuing our meat for our Appreciation Party.

Board of Trustees report was given by Brother Johnnie Krizan.

The board recommended that we sell our wooden chairs at $5 each; a $25 donation to Elton Stuckly family in the loss of his home in a fire; to have turkey and dressing at our Christmas Party for December 16 and to cancel Social Night for Friday after Thanksgiving.

Anyone interested in purchasing the wooden chairs is asked to contact Brother George Straten or Brother Robert Dobecka to set up a time when you can come and pick out the chairs you would like to purchase.

The $10 door prize drawn was David Krueger, not present; $10 Terri Matula, not present; $9 progressive door prize, Eugene Hrabal, not present; the $2 door prize was won by Brother Alvin Schuetz.

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be at 7 p.m. November 30th and the regular meeting will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 2nd.

Our Christmas Party will be Sunday, December 16th. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to go with turkey and dressing. After the meal the youth will present a program and then exchange gifts.

Mark your calendar for the event and come out for an afternoon of fun.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Meeting Dear Members: After a delicious supper, which we all enjoyed very much, President Ann Balusek opened the regular monthly meeting by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. We stood for a minute of silence for our departed Sister Joyce Ann Ruzicka Easterling. May she rest in peace.

Sister Ann welcomed our guests Lillie Zajicek, Thomas Harwell and Dan Balusek. We were very happy to have you; do come, again.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Joe Zajicek, and Anton and Charlsie Svetlik celebrated 44 years together, also Frank and Charlene Kamenicky celebrated 28 years together. More happiness is wished to all of you for years to come.

Brother Frank Svetlik and Sister Ann Fuchs are on the sick list; we hope and pray both of you are feeling better by now.

Roll call showed all officers present.

The minutes, committees' and officers' reports were approved as read.

The same officers were elected by acclamation, namely, President Ann Balusek, Vice President Ed Svoboda, Secretary Charlsie Svetlik, Financial Secretary Sidonia Svoboda. They are all doing a very good job and all the members will help them in any way possible.

After some discussion, the members voted to let Beck's Heating & Air Condition finish putting in the heating unit. Very soon we will need some heat, it is beginning to get cool at nights.

The kitchen chairman and bar chairman will be Ed and Sidonia Svoboda; they do a real good job and the members want to say a big THANK YOU. December 16 we will have a Christmas Dance from 4 to 8 p.m.

Texas Gold will be playing good dancing music. Please come and join us for an evening of fun. Door prizes will be given.

The next regular meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. December 12th. It will be a short meeting with a Christmas Party; the club will furnish turkey and ham, therefore, each member is asked to bring a salad or sweets.

Games will be played after we eat.

Please come, it will be a lot of fun and plenty to eat.

I'll see you all at the next meeting and at the dance, December 16th.

Christmas Supper /Memorial Service At Lodge 17 The SPJST Lodge 17 of New Tabor wishes to invite our members and friends to the Christmas supper and annual Memorial Service for Sunday, December 2, 1984.

Father Isidore Rozycki will conduct the Memorial Service beginning at 5:30 p.m. We will be honoring the memory of Brother Kevrin Urbanovsky, Brother Joe D. Lesikar, Sister Vlasta Ginzel, Brother Ralph C. Muzny, Sister Christina Vavra, Brother George F. Fillip, Brother Frank Blazek, Sister Hermania M. Trcalek and Sister Rosie Marek.

The election of officers will take place at the monthly meeting Sunday, December 2 at 2 p.m.

District I Director Ben F. Trcalek will install the officers for 1985.

Our District I Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek has planned an entertaining program for your enjoyment.

A traditional turkey and dressing with all the trimmings meal will be served immediately following the preceding planned program. The ladies of the lodge will be preparing the delicious desserts.

23, Moravia Annual Meeting

Dear Members: Our lodge will hold its annual meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 1984, at Brother Eddie Vrana's cabin.

The topic of our SPJST building will be discussed.

The sisters are asked to bring sandwiches or some goodies for the social following our meeting; the refreshments will be furnished by our lodge.

Lodge 28, East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: Sunday, December 2nd our lodge will have their annual meeting thirty minutes earlier, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Please make a note of this time change on your calendar.

Brother Anton Kelner, Jr. had surgery recently at the Gulf Coast Hospital in Wharton, Texas. Brother Kelner is our lodge's financial secretary for a number of years and also serves as District VI treasurer. I'm sure he would appreciate a get-well card from you while in the hospital.

Lodge 29 Schedules Installation And Christmas Party

35, Elk Elects Officers And Committees

Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, November 11 at 4 p.m.

After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, we remained standing for a few minutes of silence for our deceased Brothers John Wittliff and Henry Kaminski.

We then had roll call of officers.

Jerry Tallas and Herbert Riethmeyer were absent.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and the Property Committee report and treasurer's report were also given.

New members received into our lodge were David Roznovak, Jr., Jackie Roznovak, Kent Louis Stabeno and David Stabeno.

We had the convention picture framed and the members voted to pay Jessie Pospisil $25 for the frame. It looks real nice and we really appreciate it, Jessie.

Donna Pasemann, assistant youth leader, reported that there were 26 members, 5 adults and one visitor.

They decided to give boxes of Kleenex to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I for Christmas. They will play practice Saturday, December 8 and for their social for December, they will go to North Cross Mall Christmas shopping or go skating.

We will have our Christmas Party and short meeting Sunday, December 9 starting at 2:30 p.m.

There will be a short meeting, installation of officers and then the youth club will present a Christmas Program. Hopefully, the man from the North Pole will show up. The lodge will furnish the meat for the meal and each member is asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert.

Youth Leader Louise Burney reported that there were twelve members present for their youth meeting, and that their Halloween Party had been a success. They plan to have a Christmas Party, but haven't set a date yet.

Michael Dale Webb was accepted as a new member.

Contributes $500 To Charities Dear Vestnik Readers, The monthly meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 was called to order at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, 1984. President James Kulcak led the Pledge of Allegiance and asked for a minute of silent prayer for all our departed members.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers. All were either present or excused. Motion was made and accepted, to accept the minutes of the last meeting as recorded in the Vestnik. Due to a mistake on the calendar in the Vestnik, the meeting was held as reported.

New members, Edward Leo Larza and Garnett Marie Larza are bid welcome, due to our Sales Representative Leona Macha.

Treasurer Leona Macha gave a brief, but efficient accounting of all bank transactions. A $300 donation was made to the Czech Home for the Aged and a $200 donation to the Wharton-Matagorda Child Welfare Department.

President Kulcak received a letter of congratulations from President Leshikar for all the good works. President Kulcak, once again, stressed that anyone having anything to add to the organization, please attend the monthly meetings.

Second Vice-President Benny Reck reported the new lights are installed in the parking lot, but had a suggestion that one be added over the back door. Also, the vents to eliminate smoke do work well.

Carpet will be installed in the office and on the stage as soon as possible.

Ellinger Lodge No. 51 Annual Meeting Dear Members: This is a reminder that Lodge No. 51 at Ellinger, will hold their annual meeting Wednesday, December 12th, at the Ellinger Fire Station.

As usual the election of officers for the coming year will be held plus a few other important matters need to be discussed. Special need for discussion and arrangements will be the coming lodge picnic to be held in 1985. Your presence and participation is requested as well as needed.

Sister Shilling also asked the Mother Lodge to give them $1500 towards the party. Members voted and agreed to do so. Santa Claus will also make an appearance so all the little boys and girls can tell him what they would like to have for Christmas.

Youth Leader Kay Owen reported there were 13 youth present for the meeting. The youth would have their Christmas Party December 13 beginning at 6 p.m. They will also have a cake walk December 29th.

Sister Owen asked if the lodge would give her some money to purchase candy and fruit for the sacks to be given to the children at the Lodge 66 Party. All the members voted to give her $200 for this project.

Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Orsag on the loss of a brother, and to Sister Dorothy Moore on the'loss of her cousin. A get-well card was sent to little Steven Pankonien.

Our Cheer Committee chairman, Sister Jeanette Smith, read thank yous from the following: Willie Mae Blackwell (now deceased), Linda Steinhouser family and Elsie Moore.

The lodge had $1500 to give away. A motion was made and carried to divide the money up as follows: $500 to Caritas, $400-to . Family Abuse Center, $100 to the following, Department of Human Resource Grocery Party, Larry Sanchez, Lupe Robles whose husband passed away and she has four children, Ginger and Jeff Warhol (both have Malinoma), Aaron Nors and the CCD Bible Class at St. Joseph's Church in Elk.

Nominees for guide were Joe Pruitt and George Shilling. The members elected Brother Pruitt as our new guide.

Flag Bearers voted in by acclamation were Bill Warren, Larry Yates and Chris Owen.

Our new Board of Trustees are Ray Orsag, George Pauling, Bonnie Pruitt, Darlene Engelke, Johnnie Gaidusek, Frank Miller, Ira Niswanger, Mary Langlotz, George Shilling, Frank Kofnovec and Jim Locke.

Entertainment Committee will be comprised of the following: Polly Gaidusek, Dorothy Moore, Mary Alice Langlotz, Dorothy Shilling, Barbara Brem, Gladys Yates, Ruby Orsag, Jewell Warhol and Cory Pruitt.

After the election of officers Brother Silas Smith announced that Brother Larry Brem would be a new Sales Representative for Linden Hall Lodge 66. Congratulations and Best Wishes from all members.

Dear Members and Friends: We held our monthly meeting Sunday, November 4, with President Bohac presiding. He called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with all officers present and with a small membership attendance at this meeting. The chair asked all members to stand to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. , The minutes of our October meeting were read by Secretary Lathan and were accepted as read by the secretary. In correspondence a letter was read by the secretary from the Welfare Board.

It was decided, at this meeting, to have another one of those polka/ waltz/country/western Sunday afternoon dances at Lodge 80, and this one will be Sunday, December 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. The music will be furnished by Eddie Ray and His Polka Dots; these boys have good music to offer. We invite all you music lovers to come out and enjoy an evening ofgood entertainment, plenty of cold drinks, and plenty of those good Holland SPJST hamburgers for $1, so come hungry.

They seemed to be having as much fun as we were and certainly their exuberance was contagious.

The youth club had a good attendance. A gift will be brought to the next meeting for the youth club Christmas Charity.

There was no pertinent business in the Board of Trustees' report.

Libbie Bartek sent sympathy cards to the Harvey Hilliard and Greg Pustka families.

Othea Jezek thanked the lodge for the pot plant.

Under old business the lodge's Christmas Party will be held December 7; all members attending are asked to bring a covered dish; the lodge will furnish turkey and dressing. Anyone desiring to bring tapes to play for dancing, feel free to do so.

Walter Jezek reported he visited with the couple at the First House and had much praise for them and the good job they are doing. Walter also has been appointed to the Bell County Welfare Board and we, as a lodge, could not find a better couple than Walter and Othea Jezek for this committee because they are able to go all out. We thank you for a job well-done! Anyone wanting to donate children's books or clothing to First House, contact Walter or Othea Jezek. PLEASE NO ADULT CLOTHES! Under new business some new bands have been hired for next year.

The Nominating Committee will meet, again, December 10th.

December 12 know who you are voting for and what type of job they will be doing for the lodge; it does no good to just come once to the lodge and not return to see how the ones you elect conduct themselves and what good they do for the lodge!

Lodge 88 Birthday Club Report November 14 President Pearl Hanka called the meeting to order.

She read a great poem and I would like to share it with our readers.

As We Grow Older Everything is farther away than it used to be.

It is twice as far to the corner and they've added a hill I noticed.

I have given up running for the bus; it leaves faster than it used to.

It seems to me they are making steps steeper than in the old days.

And have you noticed the smaller print they use in the newspaper?

There is no use asking anyone to read aloud.

Everyone speaks in such a low voice that I can hardly hear them.

It is almost impossible to reach my shoelaces.

Even the people are changing; they are so much younger, Than they used to be when I was their age.

On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am.

I ran into an old classmate the other day and she did not recognize me.

I got to thinking about the poor thing while I was combing my hair this morning.

And doing so I glanced at my reflection in the mirror, They don't make mirrors as good as they used to, either.

Friendship Club of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, Our Thanksgiving Family Night dinner, November 1st was wellattended and we welcomed many guests; too numerous to mention by name. We also made welcome a new member, Ann (Johnson) Foster.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to all who bought quilt tickets and made the benefit to the club a success. The lucky winner of the quilt, donated by our 90-year old member, Mrs. Mollie Walker, was won by Mary Owens. The second prize winner (a lovely, crocheted basket) was won by Ruby Jones and the 3rd prize, (a vanity box), was won by Theresa Syrus.

A special thanks to the members who prepared the turkeys and helped serve the food and clean the kitchen afterwards. Agnes Reznicek gave many of us a treat of her delicious dumplings and kraut.

The November birthday members were Genevieve Earle, Merle Kovar, Elma Anderson and Joe Milan. The birthday members and their spouses were honored by being the first to be served the delicious food.

The December 5th meeting will be a Christmas dinner, consisting of ham and all its trimmings. A gift of not less than $3 value will be exchanged at the party. The election of officers for the year 1985 will also be held.

We extend our congratulations to Mary and Benny Pavey who celebrated their 49th Wedding Anniversary November 23rd. We wish them many more anniversaries with good health and love in their hearts.

Get-well wishes and a full recovery after surgery we express to Alice Hunter and we hope Rose Million has had a full recovery from her re-injured wrist.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women Dear Members and Friends: The election is behind us now and for the next four years, whether your candidates won or lost, let's hope that they will be blessed with good health and judgment to run our great country to the best of their abilities.

With a very good turnout at our November meeting, President Zvolanek opened the meeting with a pledge to the flag and reminded us to go out and vote. Red, white and blue patriotic decorations were all around us, thanks to Liddie Pavelka.

Bessie made an interesting report on the Meals on Wheels Program.

Our Christmas Party will be at the Wyatt Cafeteria, 1834 Abrams Rd. December 6th from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Gifts of $3.00 value will be exchanged. Bring a wrapped gift if you wish to receive a gift. Alice Roberts volunteered to handle the numbering of gifts. Alice Roberts and Liddie Pavelka will bring their centerpieces and Dorothy Reznik will be in charge of Christmas carols.

enjoy this special time of year with us.

Liddie Pavelka brought up the subject of our monthly-'luncheons and suggested we continue on same format as in the past. After discussion on this, it was decided we not change our procedure. Vickie Kohn will now be buying supplies for our luncheons such as coffee, cream, sugar, etc. Mary Sebestik has been doing this for a long time.

Mary reported there will be no Krouzek meeting in January. In February our members are asked to bring a covered dish to the meeting.

In March we will return to our regular luncheon plan with hostesses.

Bertha Podhradsky announced the Sokol Zizka will have their Christmas Party December 22nd.

Our circle always contributes towards this party. Mark this date on your calendar because this is a very happy occasion visiting with everyone. Bertha would like to see a very good turnout.

Bertha Malik enjoyed an eightday cruise from Acapulco to San Francisco on the Noordam, a new Dutch Ship.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our members celebrating November birthdays. Dorothy Reznik then led us in singing "America" and "America, the Beautiful" since it was election month and we were trying to get everyone in a patriotic mood.

Since this is the month we all will be celebrating Thanksgiving, let me share a poem with you that a little boy recited at a school PTA meeting last year: "Grandma said that turkey, cranberries, and pie Sometimes have a bitter taste, and I asked her why?

Grandma said, "A banquet fitting for a king, eaten with a thankless heart, isn't anything.

"And, you know," said Grandma, "even what-is-least, eaten with a thankful heart, can be quite a feast."

The Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle held their monthly meeting November 8 after the "Pledge of Allegiance" was recited by the members. Sadie Kubin presided at the meeting. 51 ladies attended including 5 guests who were Agnes Dujka, Julia Lanning, Betty Slovacek, Marie Kunz, and Frances Fabik and we are delighted in their joining the membership; we are growing! We can make more quilts every meeting with the extra help!

After the September and October minutes were read and approved, the treasurer's report was made.

Liddie Pavelka took the minutes in absence of Ella Zmolek in October.

Vytopil, Helen Jaresh, Mary Kopecek, Rose Parma, and Annie Jaska. Mrs. Vytopil is on the sick list and was remembered by the members. Sadie Kubin, Vojta Janicek, Anne Mullin, Stazie Jurcik and Bertha Podhradsky lost a beloved relative, Miroslav Jurcik, and may he rest in peace.

Our next meeting, which is the annual Christmas meeting, will be December 13th. Anyone who is attending is asked to get there early at least by 10 a.m., because we always carry through our meeting first that day. Then the presentation of gifts and luncheon is thereafter.

The Krouzek will furnish smoked turkeys and sliced ham. Georgia Zabojnik, our treasurer, will buy the meat. All gifts brought are to be $3 and no less. There will be no other gifts and also no quilt will be quilted.

The drawing of the Christmas quilt is $1 per ticket for each member, so, members, please spread the word around.

The Thanksgiving dinner which consisted of fried chicken furnished by the Krouzek and the members furnished the rest was a big turnout as it shows the members are all excellent cooks. Georgia Zabojnik ordered the fried chicken and all the members appreciate her hard work.

Thanks, Georgia. Libbie Wisniewki furnished the beautiful chrysanthemum centerpieces for all the tables. Thanks Libbie, keep those flowers growing.

Remembered at the November meeting were Sisters Petrik, Janecka, Sebestik and Bartek through Agnes Houdek and Anne Zvolanek. Others were welcomed back who didn't attend a long time and they were Sisters Lipscomb, Sill, Nemec and Staglik.

Our devoted Krouzek quilters quilted a quilt for Rose Bednars.

Rose, in return, made a generous donation to the Krouzek's treasury and she also was responsible for binding one of Krouzek's quilts.

Thanks, Rose. We, as members, really appreciate you.

Anne Zvolanek read a short story in English called "The Story of Four People". Very well expressed, Anne!

President Kubin said one in Czech called "Pan Psovi", that enlightened all of us. We ask all members on voluntary basis to keep bringing short articles to be read at our monthly meetings.

In the October meeting Mary Kopecek donated get-well cards to the circle for future use. A thankyou card was sent from Liddie and James Pavelka on behalf of the floral arrangement sent them on their 50th wedding anniversary. Also donated by them to the circle was $20, and was real nice of them.

Agnes Houdek, on voluntary basis, has had rummage sales at our last 3 meetings. All proceeds went to the circle. Thanks, Sister Houdek. A prize ticket went to each quilter who quilted Alice Robert's quilt in October by Alice; also, in October, Liddie Pavelka donated mints to members. She also was voluntarily responsible for the patriotic red, white and blue banners for the head table decorations as well as balloons imprinted with our American Flag and the wording "Old Glory" to remind everyone of Election Day. Workshop To Be Held in Temple December 1, 1984 The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is sponsoring a genealogical workshop and meeting in Temple December 1, 1984 at the Supreme Lodge SPJST Home Office, 520 North Main, Temple, TX. The workshop and meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m. There will be no registration fee. All persons of Czech descent who are interested in tracing the origin of their family and/or developing a family tree will receive helpful information on sources they will need for their research.

Many well known authorities on Czech Genealogy will be featured on the program.

moommommi■mm BRYAN YOUTH CLUB ACTIVITIES Dear Readers: The Holiday Season is upon us and we feel the excitement of getting ready for Christmas and we want to share that feeling with everyone else in every way we can.

Lodge 39 Youth Club has been very busy. We had a craft and bake sale in Post Oak Mall and did exceptionally well. Thanks to everyone for the support of either working, donating, purchasing or all three. We also held our Halloween Carnival which was a huge success with sister lodges coming out to share in the fun and also a lot of outsiders in our community. We are finally letting people in our town know what SPJST is and that it is fun!

At our last meeting, we decided on a social to be held November 30 at 7 p.m. at our lodge. It will consist of a pizza supper and then showing a movie. We will also have a short Christmas Program rehearsal.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a friend.

December 9 will be our next monthly meeting. After the meeting we will bag our candy that we bring to take to the nursing homes as we go caroling there that same afternoon. December 15 we will have our Lodge 39 Christmas Party with a dinner and dance and the youth will have a Christmas play.

Our charity for the month of October was collecting items for a family who lost their home and two children in a fire.

In November we collected a food basket for Twin City Mission to donate to a needy family for Thanksgiving.

For December we will go caroling and also bring wrapped Christmas gifts designated boy or girl and age group for the Children's Shelter Christmas Party. This is to be brought to the next meeting.

Remember, it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting in November at the Taiton Community Center.

The meeting was called to order

by President Michelle Srubar.

Jennifer Dluhos led the pledge and Amy Kresta recited a prayer.

Poems were read by Stephanie Roye, Lenice Kaspar, Michelle Srubar, Jean Dorotik and Marcy Dorotik.

Door prizes were won by Kristi Korenek, Kristy Vacek, Valerie Roye, Landis Dornak and l3radly Krpec.

Our meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served.

Dear Readers, Sunday, November 11, 1984 was our monthly meeting of Lodge 39 Youth Club.

NEWS FROM LODGE 39, BRYAN YOUTH CLUB Dear Readers, Our regular monthly meeting was held November 11th. We decided, at our meeting, that our next activity will be pizza supper and movie at our hall.

We also drew names to exchange Christmas gifts at our party which will be December 15th. We will have a turkey and dressing supper; then we will have a program and free dance for the public at 8:30 p.m. that night. We also planned to bag candy for the nursing homes for Christmas and take it to them when we go caroling at our next meeting.

Sister Gregg is survived by her husband, Lewett F. Gregg; daughters, Pamela Gay Gregg and Sandralett Percival, all of Houston; a sister, Jean Abbitt of St. Louis, Missouri; a brother, Bernard Specken of Illinois; two grandchildren, Tonia. Martin and Kenneth E. Martin, Jr. Funeral services for Sister Gregg were held Friday, October 26, at the Heights Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dick Ford White officiating.

Interment was in Forest Park West Cemetery.

In lieu of the usual remembrances, the family requested donations to be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Janik was born July 24, 1891 in Dubina, Texas to Ignatz Hranicky and Clara (Petrast) Hranicky. In 1908 she moved to East Bernard and married Rudolph Janik. She had lived in Eagle Lake during the past 26 years.

Mrs. Janik passed away Thursday, October 18, 1984 in the Eagle Lake Community Hospital following a brief illness.

Mrs. Janik was a faithful member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and Christian Mothers of East Bernard, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and Altar Society of Eagle Lake.

Brother Hrabal was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church of Arlington and the Knights of Columbus also in Arlington. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge 6 of Cottonwood.

teletext services, video conferences, microwaves, the pulsating digital language of computers, and other computerenhanced techniques. The world will shrink even further with communications advances. Wonders never cease! Things are moving so fast that unless you are attune to the times, something will surely pass you by. We have to be more flexible than ever to accommodate these changes and advances. We must be careful not to be too rigid and paint ourselves into a no-escape corner.

The Home Office has tried to be helpful to individuals and to local lodges who have REQUESTED such advice and help. We feel this is our duty and our responsibility and that those requesting such help are entitled to it. We try to achieve a meeting of the minds and getting people to reason together. When serious differences occur, one party may have to yield to the other.

Sometimes it is a matter of falling back on the wording or text of our by-laws. We like for local lodges to settle differences among themselves because that is the best place to settle them, but sometimes the factions involved bring their differences to the Home Office, and we try to be helpful.

Let Us Study Czech Lekce jedenatticata — Lesson 31 SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION In today's lesson, we are repeating part of a previous lesson, relating to correct Czech spelling and punctuation. The items touched on concern some of the most often-made mistakes by some of our Czech correspondents. Therefore, we feel it bears repeating. (Lesson 30.)

(Lekce 30) Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Veera byla stfeda 14. dervence 1968.

Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.

Consequently days of the week and month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of person, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies of organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals. Ex.: Karel DvoMk. Wilsonovo nadrag, Dunaj, Anglican, Cechy, Smetanova opera "Prodana nevesta" etc., and Nage Hmsko-katolicld cfrkev, Velika slovanska podporujfcf jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE—FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR—INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, Vag; Ty, Tvilj, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person.

WRONG: Vy (1 person) jste veerajeli do mesta. RIGHT: Vy jste veera jel do mesta. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.

The pronoun JA is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality.

(This is done in English). Ex.: Main eeskou ienu. — (I have a Czech wife).

Punctuation marks are the same in Czech as in English. (See also Lesson No. 5): pomleka (—) teeka (.) otaznfk (?) earka (,) vyktienfk(!) sttednik(;) uvozovky (" ") zavorky ( ) dvojteeka (:) rozdelovaci znamenko (-) One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.

Commas are used before and after

a relative clause: Ztratil jsem knihu, kterou mi dal.

—before and after a noun clause: Je dobre,ze tomu rozumfg.

—before and after an adjective clause: Vgechen cukr, vkchna kava.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, gel prye.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pracuj a ue se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation.

Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the USA is to use the standard English quotation marks —

1) Apart from adverbs denoting place (see lesson 14) we distinguish also adverbs of time (dnes, brzo, hned, easto, zftra, rano, veeer), manner of action (rychle, dobte, krasne, spoleene, srdeene, pegky), degree of quality (Indio, trochu, velmi). The most frequent way of deriving adverbs, especially those expressing manner (question: Jak?— How?), is from adjectives by dropping the final long vowel and adding the suffix. —eie. The preceding hard consonant is palatalized in the usual way (see lesson 2): dobry—dobfe mladS7—mlade slaby—slabs prostY—proste smutny—smutne zajimavy—zajimave slept'—slepe hlavnf—hlavne zfejmy—zfejme kratky—kratce vesely—vesele drahy—draze tichS7—tige A small number of adverbs derived from adjectives have beside the form in -e a parallel form in -o: draze-draho, vesele—veselo. The form ending in -o is used in the predicate (with the verb to be), the form ending in -e modifies adjectives, verbs or adverbs. Sometimes in the form in -o can express a more definite, concrete

reality, while the form in -e is more abstract.

Compare: Smala se vesele. V detskem pokoji bylo veselo. Letadlo vysoko. To byla vysoce zajimava pfednagka.

Adverbs derived from adjectives in sky, -ckS7 take the ending -y: eesky, anglicky.

VOCABULARY: prosty-simple, hlavni-main, drahS7-dear, expensive, tichy-quiet, slaby-weak, slept' blind, zkejmy-evident, vypadat, impf.-look, znft, impf.-sound, zku g enost, f.experience. Observe: Udelali jste to dobfe. Vas dedeeek vypada jests velmi mlade. Kratce se zasmala. To, co jste fekl, znf zajimave. Tu zkuknost jsem musel draze zaplatit.

2) Some verbs describing weather are used in the third person singular and have no subject. Pr g.1. — It rains.

Sneff. — It snows. Mrzne. It freezes.

Another type of subjectless sentences uses the verb to be and an adverb, if possible in the -o form. Je teplo. — It is warm. Je hezky. — It is fine. Je mlha. — It is foggy. Je tma. — It is dark. V nag rodine je stale veselo.

Sometimes the subject is substituted by the dative personal pronoun. Je mi zima. — I feel cold. Je mi hezky. I feel fine. Je mi smutno. — I am/feel sad.

SCHOLARSHIP Program For SPJST Members The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP Four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. The certificate must be a permanent plan of insurance in the face amount of $5,000 or more. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

Each year a member may apply whether they have been a previous recipient or not.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Applicants who are high school seniors must take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) or the American College Test (A.C.T.) given by the

The SPJST SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Scholarship Application I hereby make application for a Scholarship and agree to abide by the rules and regulations of the SPJST Scholarship Program.

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

Exact due dates and requirements for both the freshman and undergraduate programs will be furnished the member after they have sent in the initial application prior to December 31.

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them at any time as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE

The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United, States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.
