tribute to Sister Olexa by giving a resume of the many things she has done for the lodge. She baked kolaches every Saturday, along with other Birthday Club Sisters. For years, she worked organizing the lodge's history which later, with the assistance of Brother Kostom and Sister Spencer, was coverted into a book and published.

She has been and still is a member of the Choral Club and has been 2nd Vice President for seven years, writing numerous letters to the Vestnik. These are only a few of many works she has contributed to the lodge.

She has performed in many plays, which the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club has produced. One of which, she played the part of an angel and to Frances Olexa this day she is still considered our angel.

As usual at our monthly meeting, A beautiful yellow and white cake a list of birthdays for the month was was served to the members, in her read and Happy Birthday was sung honor, after the meeting. to them. This week the editor would like to mention something about head-on collisions that may happen for many reasons. Let us discuss the most common ways.

One of the most typical causes is the "drop-onto-shoulder" accident.

Going at 55, you jounced along a few feet, then you pull on the steering wheel around to the left, you hurl yourself crazily onto the highway, then you head diagonally for the opposite ditch or down the highway in the wrong lane. It is inevitable, at the speed of about 55 miles an hour that the car would be out of control when it jumps back on the highway.

Most improved highways today have at least an inch drop to the shoulder. Others have up to 5 inches drop. Those drops are killers if you do not realize they are treacherous.

It's wise to remember to reduce your speed before attempting to get back onto the road.

During daylight you will not need to come to a complete halt because you can spot a place on the road ahead where the pavement and the shoulder are at about the same HEIGHT. You can safely re-enter the road there without danger, provided you slow down.

At night, however, your best best is to come to a near-halt before reentering the road — because of the difficulty of seeing the edge of the highway and judging its heights.

The blown tire, a second cause of head-on collisions, is not as potent a killer nowadays as in years past.

People now realize they must replace tires before they are threadbare. But do not give the blown tire the mental brushoff.

Other persons lying in hospital beds all over the nation are wondering why they never replaced that bad tire.

A blown tire can cause your car to swerve over into the lane of oncoming traffic. If you should ever have a blowout, we suggest you remember these important things: Keep control of yourself. If you ever needed presence of mind, this is it. If a rear tire has blown, you can expect your car to begin swerving from side-to-side. If it is the right front tire, your car will wander to the right with considerable determination. A blown left front tire makes your car swerve to the left.

Remember to grip your steering wheel hard. By turning it in the proper direction, offsetting the natural swerve you can force your car to go in a straight line. Never apply your brakes until you feel the car is under your complete control.

Try to apply the brakes very gently and slowly, keeping the car in gear so that the engine will help you out as a steadying brake.

Have your tires checked periodically for breaks in the casing and loss of tread. Make sure that the proper pressure is in them, especially in summer months when air expands due to heat and increases pressure.

Another head-on collision cause is falling alseep at the wheels drifting over into the wrong lane of traffic and meeting another car head-on.

The only positive way to avoid a sleeping smashup is to refuse to drive when you are tired.

Many individuals we know feel they have to drive beyond the usual fatigue point in order to get home, to keep a previously-arranged engagement on time. Below are some helpful suggestions.

Maintain plenty of fresh air in the car; arrange for a passenger and engage someone in a light conversation; pull off for a 15-minute nap; park the car and rest your eyes by pressing the index fingers gently on the eyelids for a few minutes; try to drink coffee or strong tea; avoid all alcohol; get out of the car and walk around frequently.

To avoid sleeping head-ons, do not take over the counter pills to keep you awake.

Another common cause of death or crippling in head-on collisions is skidding on icy or wet pavement.

Watch out for patches of pavement which are covered with wet leaves, sand, mud, oil or snow.

Preventing a head-on collision in a skid is a hard thing for any driver.

Here are a few helpful precautions: Keep yourself under control. You cannot do anything with the skid until you are functioning properly.

Steer in the general direction in which the car is skidding, but avoid oversteering (turning the wheel too far and throwing the car into a reverse skid as soon as it has righted itself). Avoid braking. Keep the car in gear. You need the easy braking power of your engine. Do not lift foot from the accelerator pedal suddenly.

That's like slamming on the brakes and intensifying the skid.

Another cause of head-on collisions is headlight glare.

Hundreds of people are killed every year because oncoming headlights blind them to the point where they steer right into the oncoming car.

They are usually afraid they are going into the right ditch. To correct this, they move toward the center too far.

- It is interesting to note that the fatal accident rate at night is three times the day rate. A surprising number of these accidents are caused by glare. But what, you ask, can a driver do about headlight glare? There is need for cooperation here between all motorists.

Always dim your lights, keep your headlights adjusted for least possible glare to oncoming cars, look at the center line or at the edge of the highway instead of into the approaching headlights, keep your windshield clean, do not use dark glasses or goggles, be able to stop within the visibility range of your own headlights. Finally, keep your eyes ahead. Do not bother to turn around to converse with back seat passengers.

There are other reasons for headon collisions — from bees flying in car windows and distracting drivers to simple drunkenness, the biggest single cause of head-ons: Don't drink and drive!

The editor would like to leave you this one thought with you: Being the driver of a car in which someone is killed is enough to ruin your life, and learn all you can about good driving, not short-cut, take-a-chance driving.

Uncorrected Minutes of the District IV Meeting District President Laddie Socha called the 32nd District IV meeting to order at 1:52 p.m. April 29, 1984 at the Senior Citizen Center in Seymour.

District Flagbearer Greg Blankenship led the Pledge to the Flag. Then all sang "America".

The welcome was given by Greg Blankenship from Lodge 73. In District Director Stanley Broz's response, he expressed the district's appreciation to Lodge 73 for hosting this meeting and that so many were present in spite of the windy and dusty weather.

Youth Counselor Mary Haisler and the youth conducted a candlelight ceremony commemorating the memory of all deceased members of the district.

The youth program consisted of a skit, a reading entitled "Heaven's Grocery Store" by Greg Blankenship and a reading from "Matthew Chapter 10: Verse 34" by Shannon Blankenship.

Laddie Socha recognized all the 1984 (50-year) members from District IV. The roll call of officers revealed all officers present, except Ernest Kristinek, Jr., 1st Vice President and James Haisler, 2nd Vice President.

The roll call of lodges showed the

following number of members present from each lodge: No. 49-Rowena had 6 present No. 73-Seymour had 26 present No. 77-Bomarton had 5 present No. 157-Lubbock had 6 present No. 160-San Angelo had 11 present The following lodges were not represented: 76-Wichita Falls, 85Munday, 90-Stamford, and 95Seymour.

Secretary Diana Pelzel read the minutes of the last meeting and also the correspondence which consisted of a letter of good wishes from District VII Director Thelma Hrncir, candidate for Supreme Lodge president. Raymond Pavliska presented a flower arrangement which Mrs. Hrncir sent for our meeting.

In his report, Stanley Broz brought greetings from Supreme bodge. Three district meetings and a Czech play at Lodge 88 were being held on the same day as our meeting so the Supreme Lodge officers and directors stay busy attending these functions.

Stanley reported that 3 million dollars of insurance was sold in the past year. There are three different people running for president at the upcoming convention. Those being, incumbent Nick Morris, Thelma Hrncir and Howard Leshikar. $25,000 have been appropriated for the scholarship program. At least fifty $500 scholarships will be awarded in 1984. In 1983, 2 of the 3 applicants from District IV received scholarships.

Stanley presented a plaque to the district from Supreme Lodge for our participation in the Child Abuse and Neglect Program.

He also commended Mary Haisler for her non-tiring work with the youth of our district.

A check for $500 to the Youth Department and a check for $400 for the General Fund were presented to Treasurer Raymond Pavliska from Supreme Lodge.

Stanley made 16 loans in excess of $600,000. The present interest rate is 12% on real estate loans.

He thanked all the sales people for their work. He handed out bonus checks to the sales representatives.

Actuary John Agee from Richardson has been working on some new policies which will be presented in the future.

SPJST annuities are presently paying 101/2% with 5% guaranteed.

May 1, 1984 the annuity rate will be raised to 111/2%.

One of the new plans which is in the making is a joint decreasing term plan which has a substantial discount on the premium.

The solvency went up about another percent from last year.

District IV's sales quota for 1984 is $885,000 and it is already met as of this meeting.

The top 30 sales representatives for 1983 will be sent to the State Convention in Corpus Christi. The top 30 sales representatives for 1984 will receive a trip to the horse races in Arkansas.

The hardship cases need to be turned in before May 10th so that they can be reviewed by the financial committee before the convention convenes in June.

A state audit by the Board of Insurance gave SPJST a good report.

Stanley asked for support for another term as director.

Angeline Kristinek gave a report for the Publications Committee.

Mary Haisler introduced her youth leaders who announced that the youth had booths set up today to sell food, craft and plant items. She thanked the youth who participated in today's program.

Ten youth participated in the 1983 YAD. Two participated in Royalty.

Six participated in State YAD. One trophy was received at State.

1983 district youth expenses were $493.40.

Nine campers camped at Val Verde with District I. 1983 Camp expenses were $416.75.

Two youth leaders were present March 31 at the spring training meeting. Mary attended the State Youth Leaders' meeting at LaGrange. The program consisted of a CPR class and a talk by the principal of LaGrange High School.

1984 YAD will be June 24 in Seymour with the deadline for entries being June 2.

1984 camp will be June 2-4 in LaGrange. State YAD and Royalty will be on August 12 at Temple High School.

Treasurer Raymond Pavliska reported the District balance as $1,226.07.

Rest Home Director Emil Havlak reported that there is still a long waiting list for the homes. A new laundry has been put in at the No. 2 S.P.J.S.T. home. He stated that he enjoys working with the rest homes.

Raymond Pavliska reported that the Insurance Committee met November 25th. He read a letter from Supreme Lodge Vice President Gebala thanking the sales repre sentatives for their work. Also, in the letter, Mr. Gebala asked for another term as vice president.

Bill Urbanek reported that the By-laws Committee met 3 times, the last time on March 17th and 18th.

There is still time until May 17 to send in by-law recommendations.

Lillian Holubec from the Finance Committee reported that the hardship case names need to be turned in before May 10th.

At this point in the meeting a break was taken for several door prize drawings.

Under unfinished business, Julie Lisso made a motion to donate the $104.19 (representing the balance of a defunct account) to the scholarship fund. Raymond Pavliska seconded the motion and it carried.

Officers elected for the following year are: President-Hubert Drgac, 1st VPErnest Kristinek, Jr., 2nd VP-Frank Simiachl, Secretary-Diana Pelzel, Treasurer-Raymond Pavliska, Youth Counselor-Mary Haisler and Flagbearer-Debbie Hrncirik.

Director Broz installed the new officers.

Angeline Kristinek, speaking for Lodge 157, asked that the next District IV meeting be held in Lubbock and hosted by her lodge.

Hubert Drgac made an acceptance speech after being elected the new president.

The song "Kde Domov Attar was sung before the meeting was adjourned by Laddie Socha at 3:38 p.m. A meal of various good foods was served before everyone departed for home.

Regular Monthly Meeting of Lodge 25, Ennis Lodge 25, Ennis, held its regular monthly meeting at 8 p.m.

by President Raymond Zapletal, and attendance book was passed for signature. Sergeant at Arms, Garry D. Mizell, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

On the sick list are: Sisters Annette Honza, Dorothy M. Kudrna and Bro. Joe Nekuza.

The minutes of the October 11th regular monthly meeting were read

by Recording Secretary Kay Lynn Kovar; there were no corrections and the minutes were approved as read.

Christmas Party — it was decided that the Christmas Party would be primarily for the youth with a covered dish dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by the regular monthly meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday, December 13th.

After various reports were presented and correspondence read, the election of the 1985 officers was held with the following being elected: President-James Whitfill Vice President-Albin Bouska Treasurer-Emma Trojacek Financial Secretary-Margaret Krajca Recording Secretary-Kay Lynn Kovar Sergeant at Arms-Garry D. Mizell At the December 13th regular monthly meeting officers are to be installed, the position of youth leader is to be filled, and "Mr./Mrs. SPJST" are to be announced. As stated above, this meeting is to be preceded with a Christmas Party and covered dish dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Brother Anton Kelner, Jr. had surgery recently at the Gulf Coast Hospital in Wharton, Texas. Brother Kelner is our lodge's financial secretary for a number of years and also serves as District VI treasurer. I'm sure he would appreciate a get-well card from you while in the hospital.

No. 88 Monthly Meeting Lodge

The membership meeting for Lodge 88 was held Monday, November 12th. Thirteen applications for membership were approved, and the loss of five members, deceased since the last meeting, was mourned as we stood for a moment of silence in their honor.

President Ermis reported that he was very proud of the attendance on Czech Day and thanked all who helped make it a success.

Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt reported on insurance collections during October and Treasurer Lynn Pflughaupt reported the financial details of operations during October.

Annual Meeting For Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan. He led us to the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Sister Anna Zaborowsky.

All officers were present and all reports were approved as read.

Brother Milan read a letter from Brother Bernie Gebala concerning Brother Silas Smith being selected for District III sales representative to visit our lodges to help any way he can Sister Mary Pavey reported on all cards send and extended thank you calls from Sister Georgia Simek and Brother Joe Merlick on the get-well wishes sent them.

We also extended our get-well wishes to Sister Gaye Williams and Alice Hunter, the daughter of Brother Joe and Sister Elizabeth Gregory. They are both home now recuperating and we hear they are getting better. Sister Evelyn (Mason) Horak will enter the

hospital Wednesday for major surgery Thursday and we hope all goes well and that she will be home soon.

Sister Pavey gave a report on the District III meeting and Sister Steinman reported on the Youth Club meeting. We thank Lodge 84 for the delicious dinner and their hospitality. I hope more will attend the next meeting. We were sorry to hear Sister Rose Mary Banik's mother was quite ill and having surgery that Sunday. We wish her well and the Baniks were missed.

We discussed our Metroplex Lodge's Party for December 2 and we hope you all come. Dinner will be served from 12 to 2:30 p.m.; dance with the Ennis Polka Boys from 3 to 7 p.m. Dinner and dance will be free to all members, $5 per person for guest(s). 179, Warrenton Re-elects Officers Lodge

Dear Members and Guests: A sumptuous Thanksgiving supper consisting of tasty, baked turkey and dressing, furnished by the lodge, plus a great variety of delectable side dishes and delicious desserts were enjoyed by a large group of Lodge 179 members and guests Thursday night, November 8 in the former Zapp Hall Kitchen at Warrenton. This party was held in conjunction with the regular meeting with President Harold Bergmann presiding.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous session and correspondence. Brother Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were accepted as given.

Arnold Peters gave a favorable financial standing. The refund checks were also given to Brother Peters to distribute.

By: Brian Faust (11) 1103 Village Drive College Station, TX 77840 Lodge 39, Bryan; District I "IN THE BEGINNING" Reference: The Land & People of Czechoslovakia By: Elvajean Hall Long before the beginning of history primitive "Danubian" people gathered in the hills, valleys, and plains that would one day be called Czechoslovakia.

The rich Ore Mountains that form one of the boundaries made the ancient Czech lands (Bohemia Moravia) one of the most advanced parts of ancient Europe.

During the Bronze Age the Czech lands were "home" to several ethnic groups. One of the most powerful groups of the early time were called Boii. Their homeland was called Boiohaemia (Bohemia). Moravia's population was by a people called "Cotines". They probably spread far into present day Slovakia.

The Czechs did not have complete power, they were overrun from the north by German tribes.

Carnuntum was a fort built by the Romans and is today a short drive from Vienna. It became an important outpost on the Danube as a trading center and a fort. Across the river is what's known today as Czechoslovakia.

Many relics dating back to this period are still being dug up in Southern Moravia and Western Slovakia.

According to a legend the word Czech comes from the name of a great Slav tribal leader who led his people into Bohemia. These legendary Czechs were one of a large number of Slav tribes to settle Czechoslovakia about AD 500.

Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia- these three emerging Slav areas fought for hundreds of years. Gradually they united together.

As Moravia began to grow and get

important, rival powers tried to gain control. One was the Germanic Empire in Western Europe, the other was Byzantine Empire in the Middle East.

The Great Moravian empire never was overthrown; it fell apart. Its end came between 906 and 966, when the Magyars, a wild Nomadic people, swept west bringing terror and destruction to all. With the collapse of the Moravian Empire, Western Slavonic culture became centered in Bohemia. The Sla ys who turned toward Rome, adopted the Latin alphabet. Old Slavonic gradually fell into disuse.

Recently archaelogists have been busy digging to find out about Great Moravian Culture and everyday life.

The excavations are bringing to light foundations of palaces, churches and places of business.

Silver and Gold ornaments found in graves show a delicate beauty that would be admired by craftsmen of today.

LODGE 30 YOUTH CLUB PLANS CHRISTMAS PARTY Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. November 4, at the Taiton Community Center.

President Michelle Srubar brought the meeting to order, Amy Kresta led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Kim Dornak said the prayer.

During the meeting, we discussed the Christmas Party which will be held December 14th, at the Taiton Community Center. Members are asked to have their mothers buy them gifts to be opened at the party; the price range for the gifts shall be $2.50-$3.

For our November contest the winners were announced in the following order: (6-9): 1st-Craig Dornak, 2ndJeanine Dorotik, 3rd-Stephanie Roye; they were asked to draw a turkey.

(10-12): 1st-Marcy Dorotik drew a Pilgrim.

(13-17): 1st-Michelle Srubar, 2ndJean Dorotik; they drew a Thanksgiving scene.

We then had refreshments consisting of punch, cookies and cupcakes.

After our meeting we practiced for our Christmas Program which is scheduled for December 15th. Then, we had a covered dish supper with the adults.

The next social is planned for November 30 at 7 p.m. We will be seeing a rented movie at our lodge.

We can bring friends if we want to.

LODGE 39, BRYAN YOUTH CLUB NEWS Dear Readers, We had our youth club meeting.

We discussed about Christmas caroling and about the program.

Afterwards we had drawings and Pat Smith and Scott Wilson have won them. Then we ate a pot luck supper.

We are going to have a movie and pizza supper, November 30th.

We also had drawing of names for children's presents. I'll see you at the next meeting!

Fraternally, Adam Joe Macik (13) (11-15-84) - SPJST -

His pioneering study of crossculture communications, Handbook of Gestures: Colombia and the United States, is considered a classic in its

field.

At the time of his death, Dr. Cervenka was developing a pilot program to train medical personnel in the care and maintenance of implants used in long-term chemo: therapy for cancer patients.

He served in the Naval Reserve for eight years and was active in numerous professional societies, cultural, community, and civil rights organizations. He was a life-long member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco.

Dr. Cervenka's father was the late Rudolph W. Cervenka of Riesel and Waco.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Bergmann Cervenka of Fairfax, Virginia; his mother, Mrs. Rudolph W. (Marie) Cervenka of Waco; three brothers: Robert J. Cervenka, Riesel, William F. Cervenka, Waco, and Rudolph J. Cervenka, Rusk, Texas; ten nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and nephews.

A brief remembrance and interment was held, November 10, in the SPJST Cemetery, Holland, Texas.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge 81, Needville, wish to express our deep sympathy to the family of our departed brother, JOHN KOLAJA, SR.,

Dr. Edward J. Cervenka, 49, educator, linguist, and social science researcher, died of leukemia November 4 in Alexandria, Virginia.

Dr. Cervenka was born in George West, Texas, and graduated from Riesel High School. He earned degrees in Philosophy and Economics and his Doctorate in Linguistics at the University of Texas in Austin. He taught English and Linguistics at the University of Texas, Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and the University of Hawaii in Hilo; and trained Peace Corps volunteers in Austin, Hawaii, and Iran. From 1961-1963, he was a Fulbright Lecturer in Colombia, South America, where he was chairman of the Department of English at Javeriana University in Bogota. In 1971, he left the faculty of Columbia University in New York City to establish a private Educational Research practice, specializing in the development of language and psychological tests and evaluation of Bilingual Education programs.

He moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1979 to work as Senior Research Specialist at Development Associates, Inc. In 1982 he formed Cervenka Associates, an education and social science research firm in Fairfax, Virginia.

Although best known for his contributions in bilingual education, Dr. Cervenka's work spans a wide range of social and scientific fields.

His Basic Language Competence Battery is a language test used throughout the world in versions ranging from English and Spanish to Navajo and Cape Verdean Portuguese.

Brother Kolaja was a teacher in the Needville area schools for over 46 years. He was a financial secretary for Needville Lodge 81 for many years.

Brother Samek was a veteran of World War I, and he was a loyal member of our Lodge 101 where he held several offices.

ARTICLE 24 - The By-Law Committee wished to submit it as recommended. Emil Matula (133), speaking for the Publication Committee, submitted the following recommendation and presented it as a motion: The Publication Committee should hold annual meetings and special meetings in exceptional cases when the problems cannot be settled by correspondence.

The Committee is paid according to the pay set for regular committee meetings by the Finance Committee.

Dominic Netek (133) seconded the motion. Albert Banik (35) said he concurred with Emil Matula and Dominic Netek. Rudy Sefcik (54) said it was not always necessary for the Publication Committee to meet twice a year, but a meeting once a year would benefit the Vestnik. The motion made by Emil Matula was approved.

ARTICLE 28 - Mildred Holeman (88), Chairman of the By-Law Committee, presented the following addition: "Any newly elected officer elected by the convention in a contested election involving the incumbent will assume duties July 1st in the year of the election.

Any such incumbent officer being replaced shall be relieved of his/her duties June 30th and shall be paid for the remainder of the term. (Effective immediately.)"

Roy Hranicky (137) said this addition was fair to the new and old officers alike.

Albert Risinger (172) made a motion to leave Article 28 as is. Raymond Holubec (20) asked if we were changing from a calendar year to a fiscal year. Vice President Bernard Gebala said the period of the office would remain the same but this recommendation would prevent access to the computer. Tillie Helmcamp (88) said these officers were elected to the end of the year. Emil Matula (133) said this was a security precaution only. Melvin Steger (29) agreed with Tillie Helmcamp (88).

Donnie Victorick (9) felt it was only human nature to be bitter after losing an election.

Norma Cavanaugh (20) said she would like to know what other organizations do.

Mildred Holernan (88) stated she felt this was a fair by-law because it was devastating to lose an election and start a new life.

Albert Risinger (172) asked if this was a form of severance pay and he was to ld it was. The proposed recommendation of the By-Law Committee was approved.

Donnie Victorick (9) said, "The By-Law Committee was severely criticized for making this change. The chairman's sole purpose is to preside at the quarterly meetings. There is no attempt to take away from anyone. The chairman could begin the meeting and then turn the meeting over to the president if he so desired."

Rudy Sefcik (54), Editor, said, "There is a misconception of the directors holding a separate meeting. All Supreme Lodge members would still meet together." Vice President Gebala asked if the Supreme Lodge officers could vote for the chairman of the board. Jerry Milan (154) said that the chairman of the board would vote only in case of ties. Arnold Vrla (130) asked, "Would he be elected annually and could he succeed himself?" The answer was yes.

Herbert Nowotny (81) said there would be no complications in having a chairman of the board. Darlene Engelke (66), Chairman of the Credentials Committee, was asked to update her report. She stated Milton Vyvial (175) left the convention and his votes will be subtracted from the total, leaving 38,619 votes.

In District V, Marguerite Rice (88) would be leaving tomorrow, making the top delegate, Helen Hegwood, have 160 votes with all others in Lodge 88 having 101 votes. She stressed this would be for June 21st only.

Chairman Pokladnik asked if the delegates would be willing to work a night session tonight if they would be paid their per diem for tomorrow. The delegates accepted.

Chairman Pokladnik reminded the delegates they had voted on the recommendation that they would not be paid until next week but that if anyone needed funds they could contact Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska and things could be arranged.

New Article between Articles 43 and 44 The article reads as follows: YOUTH DEPARTMENT The State Youth Director and Dis rict

Youth Counselors formulate rules and regulations for youth activities at all levels, subject to the approval of the Supreme Lodge. The State Youth Director will report to the president between the quarterly meetings.

ARTICLE 33-a-18 - The proposal of the By-Law Committee was read. President Nick Morris questioned this article. Donnie Victorick (9) said the president has control over the whole Supreme Lodge and the State Youth Director would report to him between Supreme Lodge meetings. Emil Matula (133) felt the State Youth Director should report to the president before the Supreme Lodge. Vice President Bernie Gebala said an employee should be reporting to the officer in charge of that department. Matt Vr-nek (32) concurred with Vice President Gebala.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) said this matter was worded correctly in the new article found on page 37 of the by-laws.

President Morris said, "Reporting to the president is one thing; being under the supervision is another thing."

Donnie Victorick (9) said there is a need for a State Youth Director and that local youth leaders want a say in the Youth Department.

Lillian Finn (88) said we need an individual the State Youth Director can report to and she believed this should come under the president's duties.

Joe Ondrusek (84) stated he had a problem understanding the chain of command of the Youth Department. He asked, "What relationship does the Youth Department have with the other departments of the SPJST?" President Morris then referred to Article 33(a) 18 on page 24 of the by-laws and stated that this article is important to the president and he asked that the delegates approve the words "effective immediately". Mildred Holeman stated that the By-Law Committee accepts this change.

Chairman Pokladnik called for a vote with the added words. The delegates approved the change.

Jerry Milan (154) moved that the convention accept all by-laws as presented and that these by-laws be approved by a standing vote and show of appreciation for an outstanding job done by the By-Law Committee.

The by-laws were approved.

Mildred Holeman, Chairman of the ByLaw Committee, thanked the delegates for the many compliments that were received and also thanked the members on her committee for their hard work. She stated that they didn't always agree but it was agreeable to work with this group and they always worked it out.

Henry Vitek (20) stated that this is the first time that the by-law revisions went this well.

Chairman Pokladnik stated that the group pictures are in the lobby and should be picked up. He said that any committee that needs to meet should make the announcement.

The Resolutions Committee is to meet during the noon hour.

Arnold Vrla (130) announced that the Rest Home. Board of Directors and the Finance Committee are to meet

immediately after the adjournment of this session.

Jerry Prochazka (65) stated that the Insurance Committee will meet later.

Chairman Pokladnik then called President Morris, Vice President Gebala, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, and Financial Secretary Mikulas to the podium. Chairman Pokladnik then presented a plaque to President Morris in recognition of his compiling the SPJST History.

President Morris thanked the delegates for the plaque and the Finance Committee for instigating this.

Chairman Pokladnik then presented plaques to Officers Gebala, Mikeska and Mikulas for their dedication and implementation of the computer system from 1980 to 1984.

Officers Gebala and Mikeska thanked the delegates for the plaques and Jerry Mikulas also thanked the delegates and promised to keep the bugs out of the system.

Chairman Pokladnik thanked all four for their dedication.

Charlie Matcek (81) made a motion to accept the minutes of Tuesday afternoon session, June 19, 3:15-4:23 p.m. as corrected. Albert Kubala (92) seconded.

The motion passed.

Vice Chairman Prochazka gave the room assignments for the district caucuses, which were as follows: Dist. I - Room 225A Dist. II - Room 221 Dist. III - Room 225B Dist. IV - Room 224A Dist. V - Room 223 Dist. VI - Room 227 Dist. VII - Room 224B Larry Pflughaupt (88) asked for more tellers in District V because of the size of that district.

Chairman Sid Pokladnik said they could, with the chairman of the district caucus choosing four, the secretary of the caucus choosing four.

Arnold Vrla (130) said the Finance Committee had met with the Rest Home Directors, Financial Secretary Mikulas, and Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska and had come up with two more recommendations.

Arnold Vrla (130) read the first recommendation. Larry Pflughaupt (88) asked if rest home or retirement home could be substituted instead of third home. The Finance Committee agreed and the recommendation now reads: The Finance Committee recommends that this convention authorizes the Rest Home Directors and the Supreme Lodge to make a feasibility study to determine if there is a need for a rest or retirement home. The results of this study to be reported at the next convention.

Arnold Vrla (130) moved that this recommendation be accepted and B. A. Zvolanek (130) seconded. Motion was approved.

Arnold Vrla (130) then read the following recommendation: DISTRICT YOUTH COUNSELOR Per Diem - $85.00 per day, and all assistants as outlined by the by-laws, $45.00 per day; mileage 35C per mile, lodging, and actual cost of meals, not to exceed $20.00 per day while on duty. Any other reimbursements will be recommended to and approved by the Supreme Lodge.

President Nick Morris asked who would request these other reimbursements.

Arnold Vrla said the District Youth Counselor would make this request.

Arnold Vrla (130) moved that this recommendation be accepted. Dominic Netek (133) seconded.

Jerry Milan (154) said that we were only looking at the per diem in this recommendation and we need to leave out the part about other reimbursements because this was covered in the by-laws.

Sid Pokladnik (84) asked if Arnold Vrla would strike the last sentence from the Finance Committee recommendation.

Larry Pflughaupt (88) said that the $45.00 would include all District Youth Counselor assistants.

Arnold Vrla (130) said the Finance Committee would accept striking the last sentence from the recommendation.

The motion passed as amended.

Darlene Engelke (66), Chairman of the Credentials Committee, gave an update on her report. There were 353 delegates present with a total of 38,619 votes. She thanked Pearl Hanka (88) and Vallie Zavodny (47), who were members of her committee.

Roy Hranicky (137), Chairman of the Grievance Committee, said there was only one grievance and it had been passed on to the proper committee. There were some verbal complaints, but these have been taken care of. He thanked the rest of his committee.

Larry Pflughaupt (88) made a motion to dismiss the Grievance Committee. Monta Foster (79) seconded. Motion carried.

Emil Matula (133), Vice Chairman of the Publication Committee, said they had no further report.

Al Kercho (92), Chairman of the Resolution Committee, thanked Helen Filipp (139), and Peggy Easterling ( 1 88), who were the other members of his committee.

Al Kercho (92) read his report which will appear in the Appendix.

President Nick Morris asked that Mike Dooley be included in the list of those being thanked by the Resolution Committee.

Jerry Milan (154), Chairman of the Order of the Day Committee, stated he had no further report and he thanked the members of his committee.

Chairman Sid Pokladnik answered that it would be the Supreme Lodge.

Chairman Sid Pokladnik thanked everyone from Lodge 79 for hosting this convention. Monta Foster (79) responded.

Susan Skrabanek (17) moved that there be a youth program at the next convention. Chairman Pokladnik said that this should have been covered in the by-laws.

Donnie Victorick (9) said that the opinion of the By-Law Committee was that this would be too binding in a by-law, but that she should get a feeling from the delegates as to what they would like. Susan Skrabanek (17) asked whose decision it had been to eliminate the Miss SPJST Contest and the Youth Spectacular at this convention. President Nick Morris said that it had been a Supreme Lodge decision.

Sandra Giarrusso (187) said she felt that the Youth Department was being "shot down" in all the deliberations at this convention.

Lillie Matejka (39) seconded the motion of Susan Skrabanek (17).

Chairman Pokladnik asked Susan Skrabanek to repeat her motion and it passed.

Bessie Petr (84) moved that the calendar carry a picture of the Royalty each year.

Jerry Milan (154) said the Supreme Lodge should rule and govern the Youth Department and that if the Youth Program is good, then the youth themselves will decide to perform at the convention.

Rosemary Banik (35) seconded Bessie Petr's motion. Motion carried.

Chairman Pokladnik said the Supreme Lodge was elected and let them have some authorfty.

Maxine Sefcik (54) complimented Susan Skrabanek (17) on her courage and thanked the assembly for putting the youth back into the convention.

Monta Foster (79) said we had passed good by-laws, so let's not constrain them.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) felt we had not put down the youth in this convention, but had acted in the best interests of the youth.

Matt Vanek (32) said that at the recent Texas Fraternal Congress the SPJST was well represented by their youth.

Chairman Sid Pokladnik read a letter on fraternalism which will appear in the Appendix.

Rudy Sefcik (54) said the words expressed by Chairman Pokladnik should be remembered and he thanked Chairman Pokladnik and Vice Chairman Prochazka for a job well done.

Wednesday afternoon, June 20, 1984, 3:18 p.m.-5:15 p.m.

Chairman Pokladnik convened the session at 3:18 p.m. and said that there would be some good things told to the delegates by the various officers while we were waiting for the tellers to complete the counting of ballots. He called on Bernie Gebala, Vice President.

Vice President Gebala told the convention that the insurance decisions that were passed at this convention will put us where we will be noticed by other fraternals. He asked the sales representatives to go to their respective lodges and to produce business for SPJST. He stated that SPJST is a sleeping giant. He also mentioned that one of the new provisions in insurance sales is a decreasing term policy for both husband and wife. He also stated that we never think of our individual District I - 3,902 value as going up like RVOS considers District II - 8,554 their insurance on homes as appreciating.

District III - 7,626 The SPJST actuary is now developing District IV - 1,046 insurance plans for SPJST and our plans District V - 10,218 will be very competitive. He also stated District VI - 4,781 that sales representatives will be on District VII - 2,492 contract soon. The minimum amount that Total 38,619 votes a person can invest in an annuity plan is $300.00 annually or $25.00 per month. He Voting for president took place.

Chairman Sid Pokladnik introduced the then asked if anyone had'questions and the

Nick Morris - 12,723 votes Thelma Hrncir - 9,429 votes Howard Leshikar - 16,364 votes Chairman Pokladnik announced that we will have a run-off for the office of the president between Nick Morris and Howard Leshikar.

Chairman Pokladnik then asked the delegates to get the minutes for the morning session of June 20, 1984, 10:40 a.m.-11:55 a.m.

Susan Skrabanek (17) moved that this set of minutes be approved as corrected.

Dorothy Pechal (47) seconded the motion.

Motion carried.

Chairman Pokladnik then called on Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary, to come talk to the delegates. He talked about the computer that was approved by the San Antonio convention. He said that SPJST is 85% complete towards our goal. He stated that all premium refund checks now have addresses on the checks. Another function of the computer is to check the sales representatives consistency rate of retention of their sales. He also mentioned that SPJST now has a $9,000,000 surplus. The Supreme Lodge is studying the possibility of a one time lump sum premium refund to the members or adding to the cash value of members' policies. He asked for questions and these members responded: Alfons Holubec (160), Louis Hanus (88), Dominic Netek (133), Chester Shmoldas (74), Darlene Engelke (66), Helen Hegwood (88), Norma Cavanaugh (20), Viola Cabla (137), Tommie Lostak (139), and Rudy Sefcik (54).

Chairman Pokladnik then called on Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. He stated that changing to a computer system is a traumatic experience. His example was that SPJST changed their records from a hard copy to an electronic piece of data.

The information in a computer shows up on a screen. He assured the delegates that extreme precautions are taken that nothing goes wrong. During the conversion process, the officer looked at every procedure so that it could be done more efficiently and faster. On the computer, Leonard Mikeska has daily access to the SPJST assets. He stated that the largest investments of SPJST are in mortgage loans. He asked for questions and Rudy Sefcik (54) asked what percentage of our assets are in mortgage loans. Leonard Mikeska replied that 61% or $33.2 million dollars are in mortgage loans.

Chairman Pokladnik stopped further questions since the Teller Committee had returned with the results of the election for president. The vote was: Nick Morris - 13,657 votes Howard Leshikar - 24,854 votes Chairman Pokladnik announced Howard Leshikar as duly elected president of the SPJST. Chairman Pokladnik then asked for Howard Leshikar and his wife to come to the podium where Chairman Pokladnik congratulated Howard Leshikar (48).

Howard Leshikar (48) addressed the convention, stating that he was highly honored to be elected as president of SPJST. He will work for the betterment of SPJST. He thanked all the people that he met and talked to since his announcement for presidency and that he was never received discouragingly. He introduced his wife, Mary. She thanked the convention for the support given to Howard and herself.

Chairman Pokladnik called on. President VIorris. He stated that he believed in the lemocratic process and accepted the lemocratic process. He wished the best of uck to Howard Leshikar and said he could work with him until July 1, 1984.

Chairman Pokladnik called Thelma lrncir to the podium. She congratulated toward Leshikar for a very clean ampaign and wished him good luck. She lid that SPJST is the best organization in le United States and she will continue to • rk for its progress.

Chairman Pokladnik then called for lominations for vice president. Ben Jarma 84) nominated Bernie Gebala. The ollowing seconded the nomination: Bob

layer (107), Silas Smith (66), James c.ulcak (40), and Regina Zabcik (24). Roy franicky (137) moved that nominations ease and that Bernie Gebala be elected by tcclamation. Seconded by Jerry Milan 154). Motion passed.

Bernie Gebala was elected vice tresident.

Cha i rman Pokladnik called on Bernie 3ebala and his family to come to the podium. He stated that SPJST is a democratic society and that the Supreme Lodge officers will make a harmonious transition under the new president. He introduced his daughters Michele and Bernadette, and his wife, Evelyn.

Chairman Pokladnik opened the floor for nominations for secretary-treasurer.

Jerry Milan (154) nominated Leonard Mikeska. Motion was seconded by Emil Matula (133). Alfons Holubec (160) moved that the nominations cease and that Leonard Mikeska be elected by acclamation. Donnie Victorick (9) seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Leonard Mikeska thanked the convention for the re-election. He introduced his wife, Dorothy: daughter, Denise; and son, Mark. Dorothy also stated that she thanked everyone for the reelection.

Chairman Pokladnik called for the nomination for financial secretary.

Darlene Engelke (66) nominated Jerry Mikulas. Alfons Holubec (160) moved that nominations cease and we elect Jerry Mikulas by acclamation. Josephine Pflughaupt (88) seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

Jerry Mikulas thanked the convention for having confidence in him and he will continue to work for the betterment of the SPJST. He introduced his wife, Betty and his sons, Wade and Chad, his daughter, Donna, is in Temple working.

Chairman Pokladnik called for the nomination of. Legal Advisor. Ladis Navratil, (87) nominated Sidney Kacir.

Larry Pflughaupt (88) seconded the nomination. Alfons Holubec (160) moved that the nominations cease and that we elect Sidney Kacir by acclamation. Donnie Victorick (9) seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Sidney Kacir and his wife, Dorothy, came to the podium and he thanked the convention for electing him and stated that he enjoys working with people and that SPJST is a people organization. He stated that they have three children in the Temple area.

Chairman Pokladnik called for the nomination of the editor. Sandra Giarrusso (187) nominated Rudy Sefcik. Albert Banik (35) seconded the nomination.

Larry Pflughaupt (88) moved that the nominations cease and that we elect Rudy Sefcik by acclamation. Louise Zavodny (24) seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Rudy Sefcik was elected editor by acclamation.

Rudy Sefcik came to the podium with his family and said that he thanked everyone very much. He told the convention that he is not infallible and that he can make mistakes, but he stated that he has -a broad back and can take a lot of criticism. He introduced his wife, Maxine, who stated that she appreciates the support given to them. The editor's job is a most difficult job. Maxine wished the best to the Morris family and extended best wishes to Howard Leshikar. He introduced his sons, Terry and Bubba.

Chairman Pokladnik announced that Larry Pflughaupt (88) was the winner of the quilt that was raffled by the Lodge 79 Youth Club.

Chairman Pokladnik announced that we are now ready for the district caucuses.

Do Today's Job Today - Not Tomorrow. Waiting until we are absolutely sure, waiting until conditions change, waiting until somebody else proves a product right - all these people who insist on waiting for some future time to buy, to save, to DO the things which need to be done, are losing millions of dollars daily.

Suppose everybody had said, of the 1920 automobile, "I'll wait until it is perfected before I buy." There would have been no great automobile industry, and we would have been deprived of millions of man-hours of driving pleasure.

While some timid soul waits, others are building businesses, earning a handsome income, buying, selling, trading, doing, growing.

This latter group knows that everyone who waits until things are 100 percent to his satisfaction will die before he is ready to grasp an opportunity.

It is much the same with the salesman who is going to make an all-out sales drive next week - never this week, always next week. When summer comes he plans on doing "his best" when fall arrives.

Fall finds him not quite ready, but he will be ready to set the woods on fire "this winter." Always "provided," of course, that conditions have settled down to something like normal by that time.

Provided, too, that "things HAVE cleared up and there are nothing but green lights."

It all goes back to the fact that the less a man wants to work, the more he is going to do "tomorrow."
