Not many people realize that our first Thanksgiving in 1621 was not a celebration of a bountiful harvest. Our Pilgrim Fathers experienced a very lean harvest that year and had suffered many hardships. Their spirits were low, but rather than giving up in bitterness, they set aside a special day to rejoice in, their meager harvest and give thanks that they had made it for another year. America was created with that kind of determination ... the determination that no matter how difficult the present might be, we still had a lot to be thankful for and we would go on to build a better future.

Today, 363 years after our first Thanksgiving, we are the strongest, most powerful and richest nation the world has ever seen. We have our problems, we have difficulties and have experienced great crises, but the determination our forefathers had lives on in us. We still have a lot to be thankful for.

After compiling the Vestnik Friday afternoon, November 2, we traveled to Corpus Christi to attend and officiate at Brother John Stasa's funeral Saturday afternoon and then rushed home to plan for the District III meeting in Dallas on Sunday.

Brother Stasa's daughters, son and inlaws arranged a very nice memorial funeral service and very impressively fitting. It began with a tape recording, played on the P.A. system, of Antonin Dvoraks "Going Home" from "The New World Symphony," the eulogy, and ended with a tribute by his grandson Larry Stasa by stating how much he admired his grandfather and finished with these words: "My grandfather loved living things so much, and I feel he would appreciate it if he knew I was going to plant a tree in his memory. I hope everyone here will ►" A beautiful thought, Larry. *** The meeting, which was attended by eight lodge representatives, had a fair attendance. Nevertheless, after hearing the District III officers', committee chairmen's, and the Supreme Lodge's reports, the day proved beneficial to those present.

SL President Howard Leshikar mentioned that Vice President Bernie Gebala and Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas were in Rhode Island studying the process of direct billing at one of the fraternal societies. Brother Leshikar met recently with the district youth counselors to plan the 1985 youth activities and encourage everyone to involve their youth in club activities in their lodges and districts. He also mentioned that the State Youth Achievement Day had good results.

Director Sid Pokladnik pointed out that there were five lodges in District III (66, 84, 92, 125 and 154) that ranked among the top in the State. He also emphasized the main bylaw change which was approved at the last convention: a change of delegation for 1988 that is in effect for this year. The direct billing (which is optional to the local lodges) was also mentioned; if a lodge plans to elect the direct billing method, that lodge will receive only a 2 percent premium refund instead of the current 8 percent. Brother Pokladnik was also elected Chairman of the Board of Directors and thanked those who made it possible for him to serve. The Child Abuse program was adopted by the Supreme Lodge and SL President Howard Leshikar is in charge of the program. Moreover, for those of you who plan to contribute money to this charity, let your local newspaper know of your contribution and submit your information to Brother L-eshikar at the Home Office.

The SPJST • Scholarship program is also vital to our high school/college members who may apply for the scholarship for four consecutive years as long as they have $5,000 worth of life insurance in force. (Refer to the complete

information on the back of the previous Vestniks.) The Statue of Liberty project was also discussed in the recent Supreme Lodge meeting, however, it was tabled until the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

Brother Pokladnik was elected at the National Fraternal Congress to the Communicator's Section; he will also serve on the State Fraternal Congress Committee. Brother Gebala was elected to serve on the National Fraternal Congress panel, and Brother Mikulas will serve on the State Fraternal Congress Section.

Reporting on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, Brother Pokladnik stressed that the homes have two good administrators. He also mentioned that Brother Howard Leshikar, after 12 years, will be stepping down December 31st from the Rest Homes' Executive Board; his replacement will be Brother Dan Balusek in District II. It was also stated that the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville is now in compliance with the State Regulations Dept. Brother Pokladnik was again elected as rest homes director, and he thanked everyone for their confidence in his 20 years.

Our book on the history of the SPJST was on display, and it was announced that the books are still available for sale which would make a nice Christmas gift. The cost is $14 which includes the handling charges.

We encourage the members to purchase these books while they are available at the Home Office. Before the book was published, a 3-member committee composed of Brother Sidney Kacir, Brother Sid Pok1adnik and Brother Louis Hanus, was appointed to audit the contents.

Sister Bessie Petr, in her report, mentioned that the district has two activities planned in the Waco area, 4*(1 she. was going to contact a lodge to host the District III Youth Achievement Day in 1985.

It was announced that Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 will hold their Christmas party December 2nd at Lodge 154 in Fort Worth.

The Lodge 84 members excelled to be generous hosts, and we express our appreciation for their cordial hospitality. ***

On November 18, you will have an opportunity to attend an English play entitled, "A Pair of Country Kids," which will be staged at Lodge 88 in Houston beginning at 2 p.m.

The 3-act production promises to be a hilarious play and looks as if Mrs. Starr, of the Starr Hotel, portrayed

by Marceil Malak, has her hands full with "Starr" border, Ambrose Sneggins, played by Arnold Spencer, who will be getting free meals. Moreover, two females Lucindy Appleby, acted by Millie Manack, and Susan Grimes, portrayed by Helen Kubicek, will also be looking for husbands.

To find out how the story climaxes, we suggest that you plan to see the play. We happen to know all of the selected characters in the play and know you will not regret attending. For more information about the afternoon's activities, refer to the advertisement section in this issue. ***

Miscellaneous News of Lodge 88, Houston Dear Members: To start off my letter, I want to remind everyone of the English play "A Pair of Country Kids" scheduled for Sunday, November 18th at Lodge 88. The hilarious. 3-act comedy will begin at 2 p.m.; admission will be $2 per person, and there will be door prizes given away.

A dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m., so come out and enjoy lunch and the play and visit with your friends and members.

I also want to remind you that our monthly meetings are held the second Monday of each month; our 1 St one was held November 12th at 7:30 p.m. Remember guests are always welcome.

The Texas Brew played for our Friday night dance held November 9th. Then Saturday, November 10 Al Pierson Big Band USA played ballroom music and this dance was a dress code affair.

A Veterans Day dance was held November 11 at our lodge; it was a battle dance with The Texas Brew battling The Walkin' Beats, from 3 to 8 p.m. All the veterans were admitted free and children under 12 were also admitted free.

Remember November 17th we will have Lee Roy Matocha playing polka/waltz/country/western music; the admission will be $4 per person.

Saturday, November 24 the Knights of Dixie will be playing ballroom and mixed music for your dancing pleasure, with admission $4 per person.

Let us also remember that every first and second Wednesday of each month is when the Lodge 88 Birthday Club Sisters meet for their lunch/social and meeting/lunch and card party. They enjoy having guests at their gatherings.

While I was at the store one day, I ran into a couple of our members who are now among the retired members, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert V. Polnick. Gilbert has put in 39 years of service at Folger Coffee and Continental Can and Ann put in 33 years and 4 months at Nabisco Brands. I congratulate both of you and hope you all can do the things that you never had time to do before and don't forget us at Lodge 88 and come

see us sometimes; we will always be glad to see you.

Sunday, October 28 was our Czech Day and the rain did let up so we could have a nice crowd and I think everyone had a nice time. Helen Hegwood sang like a bird, as usual, with Naomi Spencer at the piano.

Our Lodge 88 Youth Club Beseda Dancers were very good and they knew what they were doing and they looked so pretty in their Czech costumes as were so many others who had their Czech costume on. All of these plus others were in the Parade of Czech Costumes.

We had two young fellows who had birthdays; namely Randy Stonaker (13th) and a youth club member, and Jonathan Murray (his 1st birthday, Sunday). Jonathan, his dad Jeff Murray and Jeff's brother Patrick Murray were guests of ours.

While I was helping with the cakes, Mrs. Eric Carson came by for a cake and she told me that Eric is home from the hospital and is doing very good. Mr. Carson was the one we asked for blood while in the hospital; he plays the saxophone in the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra. If anyone of you can donate blood, please do so.

We still have some shut-ins so let's try to remember them and let them know we are thinking of them by calling them.

President Louis Grochoske opened our October 17 regular meeting with eleven members present.

Mydell Grochoske led us in the Pledge of Allegiance after which a moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

Absent from roll call of officers were Flag Bearer and Treasurer Randy Wicker.

Get-well cards were sent to Cecyle Duval and Doyle Vaugn. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Our thanks to Mydell Grochoske and Oleta Keating for planting the crepe myrtles in front and around the hall.

Attending the sales representatives' meeting in Dallas for October 16 were Marie Hampton, Kitty Rippin and Mydell Grochoske.

Members were reminded that the SPJST history books are now available and can be ordered from the Supreme Lodge.

All polka people take note: We will have a polka dance Friday night, November 30th; the music will be provided by Jim Bochnicek from Nebraska.

Door prize was won by Dennis Barabas.

Happy Days At • Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: There was a gaytime at the lodge Saturday night when Inez Greenlees celebrated her 60th birthday. A large crowd of relatives, friends and neighbors were present, and I understand that some of Inez's cousins met for the first time.

Everyone who arrived early enjoyed a "Happy Hour" and visited with. each other. At 5 p.m. a very delicious meal was served, cooked by Lambert Pustejovsky with several lodge members helping; everyone

Wednesday, November 14, 1984—VESTNiK/5 had plenty to eat. At 7:30 p.m. a singing telegram arrived to_ the surprise of Inez. A "Happy Birthday" wish was sung to Inez and everyone enjoyed the little song and helped wish Inez a happy birthday.

This was just one more event that kept the party going all evening and until midnight. Also, Samantha Boyle played "Happy Birthday" on the piano while Harry Music sang, I didn't know there was so much talent in Lodge 183. I'm just wondering when you two will be recording your first record. The Czechmates really played good and kept everyone on the dance floor all night. Inez sends her thanks and best wishes to all who came to be with her on this happy occasion. She says she has reached middle age; well middle age is when you know all the answers and nobody asks you the questions.

Although the next monthly meeting will be history by the time this newsletter is printed, this is the meeting that a Nominating Committee will be appointed. It is not too early for you to think about the December meeting when election of officers will be elected for the lodge for next year. If you want a voice in who you want for officers in your lodge, you need to be there and vote.

Remember lodge members that this year Sunday, December 2nd, the Christmas Party for the four Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 will be held again. This year it will be at Lodge 154/Sokol Athletic Center on 6500 Boat Club Road in Fort Worth.

The meal will be served from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. and a dance from 3 to 7 p.m. with music by The Ennis Country Boys. The members are admitted free, but if you bring a guest, a guest will be charged $5 per person. Ladies are asked to bring pastry for your sweet tooth.

The next regular lodge dance will be November 17 with music by The Blue Grass And Old Style Country band, dancing from 8:30 to 12:30.

Come out and support your lodge.

Lodge 189 Plans Christmas Party The members of Bryan-College Station lodge have planned their Christmas Party in conjunction with their lodge meeting, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. December 9th, in the KC Hall; the party will follow the meeting.

Saturday, October 20th we had our dance to Bo DeLaFosse again.

We had a good time even tho' the attendance was not outstanding (bad weather)!

Wednesday, October 24th and 25th we had work days. This is when the members volunteer their time to earn money for the lodge. The ladies brought food and drinks and I'll tell you one thing, Mary Lea Bivins' stew was out of this world. I am sure that the other food was also delicious but I only had beef stew.

We also had another work day Thursday, November 1st with barbecue and all the trimmings.

Saturday, October 27th we had our Halloween dance. Don Sessum's band played. Folks, as you know, it has been raining all week long, bad,, bad weather, but boy we had a lgg,' big crowd and the people 'with Halloween costumes were absolutely great. We thank everyone who was there; you made our dance a success.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Corner Alice Stephens, Mathilda Hartfiel and Glayds O'Neal are the two new residents to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 for the month of October. We have also added two new members to our staff: Director of Nurses: LVN Karon Fishbeck and Ben Perez as the RN Consultant; and GVN Debra Cavendar. Welcome back is Nurse's Aide Ruth Phillips.

Welcome back from Gulf Coast Hospital in Wharton is William Fojtik and from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond are Janie Dvorak, Louise Horak, Marie Reed and Ella Stacy. We are sorry to hear that Frances Jacob is hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital and wish her a speedy recovery.

We regret the loss of Helen Mensik and Stephnie Walzel. Helen and Stephnie will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Wednesday morning, October 3 residents went to Richmond to the Fort Bend Co. Fair Parade. Those

attended were Tony Ondracek, Marie Anders, Minnie Graeber, Frances Jacob, Martha Wleczyk, Stella Dreamer, August Bosak and Marie Bertram, Activity Director Martha Marx, and Administrative Assistant Susan Teykl.

Tuesday morning, October 16, residents enjoyed the visit to Leisure Lodge Nursing Home in Rosenberg. Those who attended were Tony Ondracek, Marie Anders, Louise Janc, Marie Bertram, Frances Jacob, Martha Wleczyk and Emma Tielke; Activity Director Martha Marx, and LVN Mary Trevino.

The Senior Citizen Luncheon, held at the United Church of Christ, was attended by Betty Lehmann, Marie Bertram, Victor Bartosh, Tony Ondracek, Marie Anders and Frances Jacob. The Senior Citizen Social held at the Methodist Church was attended and enjoyed by Louise Jane, Minnie Graeber, Tony Ondracek, Martha Wleczyk, Frances Jacob and Marie Bertram.

Tuesday evening, October 16, at 7 p.m. the "Tate Family" entertained with music and gospel singing.

Residents enjoyed the beautiful singing.

The residents' meal of the month consisted of wieners and sauerkraut, potato salad, rye bread and lemon pie.

Tuesday afternoon, October 23, Elverna Graeber served the residents with a birthday cake for her mother, Marie Bertram. The residents enjoyed the cake.

Monday afternoon, October 8th and 31, 1984, Nadene Scott from the Richmond Humane Society brought young dogs for therapy for the residents.

Happy Birthdays for the month of October were residents Janie Dvorak, Minnie Graeber, August Bosak, Stella Dreamer, Marie Bertram and Martha Stuchly (staff), Susan Teykl, Sarah Ray, Angie Reyes and Grace Loesch.

The Birthday Party which was held Friday, October 26, included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to favorite music. The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres and the Presbyterian Church ladies provided the cakes. Punch and coffee were served with refreshments. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Wednesday afternoon, October 31, the residents and staff had a Halloween Party which included staff dressing in Halloween costumes. Two staff members and a few residents were judges. Sophie Cario winning 1st Prize; Elaine Smith, 2nd Prize; Shaunda Jones, 3rd Prize and Verna Smith, 4th Prize and a special gift given to little Brandie Theusen. Others participating in the event were Dorothy Lipinski, Viola Kutej, Diane Rivers, Venessa Theusen, Margie Hall and Martha Marx. Volunteers participating were Lucy Bushnell, Maggie Kettler and Lydia Lowry. Coffee, punch, cake and ice cream was served to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches in the area who give services and communion to the residents for the month of October.

SUPS Chapter No. 9, Ft. Worth Meeting Dear Members: This is to inform you of the next meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire insurance Association Chapter No. 9. It will be held at 2 p.m. November 18 at the Sokol Hall, 6500 Boat Club Road.

There will be reports from the officers of the business which has been transacted since the last meeting. Election of officers and committees for 1985 will also be held.

After the meeting, the usual meal will be served to the members present and the ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the meal. The Entertainment Committee always serves a delicious meal and we are fortunate to have Brother and Sister Joe Gregory and Sister Mary Hale serving on that committee.

Recently we attended a Halloween Dance at Lodge 92.-Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and it was more delightful since there were so many who came dressed in costumes. The judges had a hard time deciding which costumes were the best. The dance was in the afternoon and more of us I believe would enjoy more dances like that.

The recent rains we had were very welcome and everything is so green it seems more like spring rather than fall. It is hard for me to believe that the holidays are nearly here. A person has only to go into the stores with all the toys that they have out for Christmas and you have to believe it.

Our congratulations to Brother and Sister Frank Tesar on their 45th anniversary which they celebrated recently. They had a beautiful celebration.

Plan to come to the meeting. I hope to see all of you there.

Workshop To Be Held in Temple December 1, 1984 The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is sponsoring a genealogical workshop and meeting in Temple December 1, 1984 at the Supreme Lodge SPJST Home Office, 520 North Main, Temple, TX. The workshop and meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m. There will be no registration fee. All persons of Czech descent who are interested in tracing the origin of their family and/or developing a family tree will receive helpful information on sources they will need for their research.

Many well known authorities on Czech Genealogy will be featured on the program.

BRYAN LODGE 39 YC DONATES TO CHARITY Dear Members, Our Youth Club held its Halloween Carnival Saturday, October 20th. Several lodges in our district attended.

We had several booths and games to play. I dressed up as a punk rocker. We had a costume contest for the children and adults. The shipwreck spookhouse was very scary. I had a great time.

Our November charity project will be a basket of food for a needy family for Thanksgiving. Don't forget to bring your canned goods for this basket.

In behalf of the membership of Corpus Christi Lodge 79, we wish to who passed away October 25, 1984 in express our sincere sympathy to the a local nursing home following a family of our dear departed brother short illness.

She was born in New Sweden, Texas, she formerly resided in Da Costa. She was a member of Lodge No. 32 since 1937. Sister Shiller was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She was the daughter of the late John H. Mikeska and the late Theresa Lesikar Mikeska. Her husband, John Alois Shiller, died June 6, 1971. Both she and her husband were members of pioneer Czech families in Victoria County.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. October 27, at Colonial Funeral Home with the Rev. Jesse Mothersbaugh officiating. Burial was in Shillerville Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Helen Moore of Victoria and Mrs. Anne Elsik of Houston; three sisters, Alvina Tillman of JOHN STASA, Bremerton, Wash., Della Plachy of Hallettsville and Teresa Esterak of a longtime Corpus Christi resident Whitsett, Texas; a brother, Frank who died Tuesday, 30 October 1984, Mikeska of Kilgore; and 3 at his son's home, Route 2, Manor, grandchildren and 5 great- Texas.

ROSIE ANNA MAREK, who passed away September 4, 1984 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan, Texas.

Sister Marek was born October 22, 1890 in the New Tabor community, the daughter of Joseph Skrivanek and Anna Mucha Skrivanek. She was married to Frank Marek, Jr. September 29, 1908 in the home of her parents in the New Tabor Community by the late Rev. Chlumsky. He preceded her in death June 6, 1957.

Mrs. Marek was a homemaker and a faithful and active member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, Sunday School and Christian Sisters Society. Her hobby was reading her Bible, preparing her Sunday School lessons for adult Czech class which she taught for many years in earlier days. She was very proud of her 22 years perfect attendance pin and for not missing a church service for around 30 years. She was also a member of the Mutual Aid Society, serving as Vice President at one time. In every way she had lived an exemplary Christian life, and will be missed by her Christian friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. September 8 in the Caldwell Brethren Church with the pastor Rev. Albert Michalik and Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Snook Brethren Church officiating.

Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery. Her great-grand-nephew, John Crnkovic of Cooks Point was the organist.

Sister Marek is survived by two sons, Frank P. Marek of Caldwell and Theodore J. Marek of San Marcos; daughters-in-law, Neldena Marek and Bessie Lee Marek; three daughters, Mrs. Rose Skrabanek of Caldwell, Mrs. Annie Kubelka of Caldwell and Mrs. John M. (Lil) Skrivanek of Austin; eight grandchildren, two step-grandsons, twelve reat-grandehildren and one sister, Mrs. Annie Marek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Joseph Skrivanek and Frank Skrivanek and a sister, Stannie Drgae.

Pallbearers were grandsons, John Hall, Mark Skrabanek, John Skrabanek, John David Skrivanek, Leroy Kubelka, Larry Marek, Richard Linnstaedter, Ronnie Linn staedter, Claude Butterfield and John Clark.

Chairman Vrla then asked the delegates to delete the entire section STATE FIELD MANAGERS. He commented that all State Field Managers are Home Office Employees. In the future it may not be necessary for all State Field Managers to attend the convention.

Chairman Pokladnik stated that no motion was needed since the committee is deleting the item.

SALARIES OF SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EDITOR AND LEGAL ADVISOR In order to bring our Officers to a level nearer to Officers of comparable Societies, and because of the rising cost of living, the following salaries are recommended: PRESIDENT, VICE-PRESIDENT, SECRETARY-TREASURER AND FINANCIAL SECRETARY 7-1-84 $45,000.00 1-1-85 $46,000.00 1-1-86 $47,800.00 1-1-87 $49,600.00 1-1-88 $51,400.00 Any replacement Officer elected by the Convention in a contested election involving the incumbent will assume duties July 1, in the year of his election or as soon as, possible thereafter, but in no event, no later than September 1.

Any such incumbent Officer being replaced shall be relieved of his duties June 30, and be paid for the remainder of his term.

Arnold Vrla (130) answered, "Yes: the committee checked several fraternals and that the chief officer gets the same salary as the other officers." He stated that some officers even get more mone y than the chief officer. The seven member committee feels that all officers should get the same salary.

Edwin Adamek (29) asked why the convention chairman and convention vice chairman get different per diems.

Arnold Vrla (130) answered that the chairman works more than the vice chairman.

Edwin Adamek (29) stated that he wants to change the recommendation to read that the president gets more money than the other officers.

Ray Holubec (20) .asked the question, "What is the current salar y of these officers now?"

President Morris stated that he receives $44,400 and the other officers stated that they receive $42.400.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) stated that she went along with the Finance Committee recommendations, except that the salary of the president should be $1,000 more per year and she made this motion.

Emil Petr (84) stated that Lodge 84 delegates sent a proposal to the Finance Committee for all officers to receive the same salar y for the next four years.

Arnold Vrla (130) stated that the committee did not accept the lodge 84 suggestion because there would be no incentive for the Supreme Lodge Officers to work harder and better.

Emil Petr (84) stated that the Lodge 84 delegates want the committee to know that if the salary is set for four years that the officers will actually receive more money.

Edwin Adamek (29) seconded the motion of Tillie Helmcamp (88) that the president receive 51,000 a year more than the other officers.

Monta Foster (79), Vice Chairman of Finance Committee, said that the committee recommends that if adjustments are needed they can be made later. He thinks it is better to give adjustments each year.

Dan Balusek (47) appealed to give more money to the Supreme Lodge president.

Dominic Netek (133) asked what was the percentage of increase in the officers' salaries. The committee chairman responded that the committee had an index to go by and that the increase would be 4 or 5% Louis Hanus (88) asked the chairman of the Finance Committee if fraternal organizations pay more or less according to size of company? Finance Committee Chairman Vrla stated that some fraternals pay more and some pay less. They found that the same responsibilities lie differently in some fraternals.

James Kulcak (40) stated there is too big a difference in the increases. He also stated that the responsibilities of the president are greater.

Chairman Pokladnik asked Ernest Wentrcek (189) if he had a comment to make.

Ernest Wentrcek (189) stated that each officer is responsible for their own responsibilities. He asked the delegates if the president and other officers should get a difference in pay. Then he asked the delegates how many were working on a salary basis. Would they work for the same salary four years from now? He further stated that we must establish a salary structure for each officer and allow for career growth.

Emil Petr (84) commented that the Lodge 84 proposal would have paid the officers more.

A delegate stated that it had been three years since he received a raise and he men-

tioned that the president is responsible for all officers.

Monta Foster (79), Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee, stated that each officer has equal responsibility and a large amount of work. He feels that all officers should receive equal pay.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) stated that the president is held responsible if anything goes wrong. He is the one that has to find an answer.

Chairman Pokladnik stated there was a motion on the floor that the president receive $1,000 a year more than the other officers. He asked the delegates to vote by raising their hands. Emil Matula (133) made a statement that he did not think that a head count would determine the winner since different delegates have different amount of votes.

Arnold Vrla (130) presented the following Finance Committee recommendation for the salary of directors: DIRECTORS: The salary of the Directors to be $6,750.00 1985 $6,750.00 1986 $6,750.00 1987 $6,750.00 1988 $100.00 per day for attending Supreme Lodge meeting. $100.00 per day for services of the Society, such as appraisals and any other authorized service, plus mileage at 35' per mile, lodging, and actual cost of meals, not to exceed $20.00 per day. $45.00 for final inspections. $30.00 per day for attending Society functions providing an invitation is received by the Director to attend such function.

He added the reason the salary is the same for four years is because the directors' job is part-time.

Emil Petr (84) said according to this recommendation, directors could receive $100 per day and mileage for attending a convention in New York.

Arnold Vrla (130) stated we could prevent this by deleting "and any other authorized service".

Albert Risinger (172) moved that we concur with the Finance Committee's report.

Arnold Vrla (130) presented the following recommendation for the salary of the editor: EDITOR: The committee submits a new proposal to the salary of Editor being: 1985 $33,500.00 $34,000.00 1986 $34,500.00 1987 1988 $35,000.00 This salary does not include any clerical help to the Editor as may be needed.

The inclusion of an amount in the Editor's salary intended for him to pay for clerical help creates a problem in that such individual is not included in the Workmen's Compensation coverage. This creates a, potential liability for the Society. Any salary paid for clerical help should be paid by the Society directly to the employee.

Rudy Sefcik (54) pointed out that the editor is making $12,500 less than the Supreme Lodge officers. This makes him feel he is not worth much to the Society. He asked why the Finance Committee made this recommendation.

Walter Jezek (177) asked what are the duties of the editor. Arnold Vrla (130) explained the duties of the editor.

Harley Cox (88) asked what the editor's present salary is.

Arnold Vrla (130) said $33,000 which is far more than what the editors of the other fraternals receive.

YOUTH PROGRAM: DISTRICT YOUTH COUNSELOR: Per Diem-$85.00 per day, and assistant $45 per day, mileage 35C per mile, lodging, and actual cost of meals, not to exceed $20.00 per day while on duty.

Any other reimbursements will be recommended to and approved by the Supreme Lodge.

Joe Ondrusek (84) asked if this would pertain to assistants or assistant.

Arnold Vrla (130) said assistant.

Susan Skrabanek (17), District I Youth Counselor, said she understood she was only to get the part of the $85 that she actually worked.

President Morris stated that according to Article 44(d) of the by-laws, the assistant Youth Counselor would receive the same compensation as the District Youth Counselor when performing the duties of the District Youth Counselor in their absence. When the assistant is working along with the District Youth Counselor, the assistant should be compensated. President Morris said the District Youth Counselors have always been paid a pro-rated salary for actual work done.

Susan Skrabanek (17) asked, "Are directors pro-rated?" She added that her whole day is ruined even if she works only a few hours.

Bessie Petr (84) said she has always received a pro-rated salary and she asked for pay for her assistants. said the Arnold Vrla (130) recommendation would cover assistants.

Lillie Matejka (39) felt that pro-rating the District Youth Counselor's compensation should be changed. She made a motion that District Youth Counselor's compensation not be pro-rated due to the extra work done at home.

Mary Kieschnick (142) seconded the motion.

Chairman Pokladnik asked that delegates refrain from comparing positions.

Anton J. Kelner (28) said pro-rating is wrong.

Emil Petr (84) said some District Youth Counselors worked more than others.

Susan Skrabanek (17) said she was only authorized one visit a year to a youth club.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) said she used to be paid by the hour when she served as a youth leader. Youth counselor's spend much more time working than what they are paid for.

Susan Skrabanek (17) said she spent more than one day in preparing for camp and needed more money for the preparations.

President Nick Morris said this was an inter-office matter and it would need to be studied at a later time.

Albert Risinger (172) pointed out that payments to the assistants would necessitate a change in Article 44(d) in the by-laws.

Arnold Vrla (130) said the Finance Committee would propose the change to the By-Law Committee.

Bessie Petr (84) said the camp compensation should also be prorated according to the number of children involved.

Arnold Vrla (130) asked President Morris for assistance in clarification.

President Morris made clarification.

Lillie Matejka (39) restated her motion that District Youth Counselors' compensation of $85 per day not be pro-rated.

Chairman Pokladnik asked for a vote on Lillie Matejka's (39) motion. A show of hands appeared too close so the Tellers were asked to take a count. The count was For $85 per day - 189 votes Against $85 per day - 125 votes Chairman Pokladnik then stated we will skip the assistants' pay of $45 per day until later.

Sandra Giarrusso (187) asked for clarification of what District Youth Counselors are paid at camp now.

President Morris explained that one day is paid by allocation from Supreme Lodge and the rest of the expenses are paid by the Camp Allocation Fund. The current rate is $75 per day.

Arnold Vrla (130) presented the second paragraph of the Finance Committee's recommendations for the Youth Program: Authorize the Supreme Lodge SPJST to provide quarterly reimbursements of 50( per youth member to the local youth clubs.

Arnold Vrla (130) read the following and moved that it be accepted: The annual net gain from the investment of $450,000.00 can be replaced by an annual allocation of $38,000.00 and that this amount be used exclusively for the youth. All funds are to be accounted for and any unused revenue is to be refunded to the Supreme Lodge.

Authorize the Supreme Lodge to contribute to the District, 35C per year for every insured member who has attained the age of 16 years, but not less than $500.00 annually. This amount must be used for the benefit of the Youth.

Susan Skrabanek (17) asked if the money would be refunded to the Supreme Lodge.

President Morris said it's never been clear in the Proceedings. The word or heading should be inserted above this paragraph entitled Camp Allocation.

Arnold Vrla (130) said that DYCs use this money for other purposes, therefore the word was not inserted in there.

President Morris said that in the neighborhood of $38,000 is accrued and he has to account for all of the funds as per the last convention.

Susan Skrabanek (17) asked where the unused funds go.

Chairman Pokladnik advised these funds are reinvested.

President Morris stated that the camp fund is getting $5,000 additional up front.

Frank Klinkovsky (47) asked, "Why are we cutting down on our camp funds and returning money? If not used for camps, money could be used for skating and other youth activities."

Bessie Petr (84) asked the question, "Why is the investment not used as before?"

Arnold Vrla (130) explained that the largest camp expense was $33,000 and $5,000 was added. The word "camp" is now out. The district can use their funds for the purpose they want to.

Bessie Petr (84) stated she was told they had to return the money.

Arnold Vrla (130) again said that the word "camp" was left out.

Chairman Pokladnik stated that the delegates have a wrong thinking about this. He stated that the amount used to be 7% on $450,000 and you cannot figure it this way now and the districts get a guarantee. All funds are to be accounted for. He explained about money being wasted and the necessity to account for it.

President Morris said the main reason

was when the income was tied to a percentage figure that we could have a slump. He said we have to audit funds and we have to account for the funds.

Dorothy Pflughaupt (88), District V DYC, said that their district has a money problem. She said the camp allocation is not enough and they never have any money left over. This needs to be looked at.

Monta Foster (79) explained that the Supreme Lodge asked for a refund since they don't want money laying around in some bank.

Sandra Giarrusso (187) asked, "When is the money to be refunded to the Supreme Lodge?"

Arnold Vrla (130) feels that the money should be refunded right after camp, but he apologized that the committee did not get into this. He felt that November 30th should be the date. His committee all agreed and they will add that sentence.

Lillie Matejka (39) moved that the unused camp funds be left in each district youth fund to use where needed for youth.

Anton J. Kelner (28) seconded the motion.

Susan Skrabanek (17) stated that she appreciates the increase in camp funds and explained that the camp at Val Verde costs $38 to $40 per child but her district went to Lone Star Camp where the cost was $67.50 per child. She stated that the $38,000 will not pay for camping. Her district was allocated for 100 campers and she received applications for 110 campers, but 20 did not show up. She had some money left over.

Chairman Pokladnik called for a vote and motion passed.

Chairman Pokladnik stated that we will now pass the section on the following paragraph since it is part of the by-laws.

Authorize the Supreme Lodge to contribute to the District, 354 per year for every insured member who has attained the age of 16 years, but not less than $500.00 annually. This amount must be used for the benefit of the Youth.

President Morris said the Supreme Lodge does not monitor the camp fund and this should be done by the district auditing committees by the fall district meeting.

Chairman Pokladnik asked the Finance Committee Chairman to go to Standing Committees.

STANDING COMMITTEES: Additional $10.00 per diem for Chairperson & Secretary of standing committees and Vice-Chairperson when acting in place of Chairman. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY Per diem for all standing committees be increased by $5.00 each year effective 1-1-86, then 1-1-87, 1-188.

Arnold Vrla (130) stated that the next motion is not on our sheet. His committee recommended that the Standing Committees that met on June 17th, 1984, in Corpus Christi shall be paid per diem, lodging for one night, and meals as outlined by the last convention. These committees are: By-Laws, Finance, Insurance and Publication Committees.

Arnold Vrla (130) read the paragraph on EDUCATION: DONATIONS TO EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: The allocations to institutions teaching the Czech language, with or without credit, could best be handled by a lump sum allocation, and give the authority to disburse and administer the funds to the Supreme Lodge, the sum being $8,000.00 per year. These educational donations apply to Texas Educational Institutions only.

Arnold Vrla (130) moved that this paragraph be adopted and it was.

Anton J. Kelner (28) started to discuss the paragraph on Sokol and Chairman Pokladnik ruled him out of order since this was the next item of business to be discussed.
