November 4 will be a very important date in our SPJST because there will be several events and/or activities taking place such as: Lodge No. 84 in Dallas will be host to the District III fall meeting at their home building, located on 2625 Floyd Street.

During this meeting you will have an opportunity to hear brief reports about the SPJST Convention, the Society's business operation since the spring meeting, officials who were authorized to attend National Fraternal Congress, and Texas Fraternal Congress. The editor urges District III members to hear these pertinent reports first-hand.

The host lodge has arranged a meal for those who plan to attend the morning session, which will begin at 11 a.m. (with registration at 10:30 a.m.). Refer to District III President Joe Ondrusek's letter and agenda in this issue.

On this same date Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 in Pasadena will observe their second anniversary of their lodge facilities on 3609 Preston.

From its organizational beginnings, things seemed to be moving steadily toward its dream: a new lodge home and with those enthusiastic officers and members of Lodge 172 they never gave up. Two years ago when this editor attended their Grand Opening, he could see that all the hard work of these members was not in vain.

After nearly two years in their new home, they were approached by Galveston, Lodge No. 173 members for a merger, and after notification through proper channels and Vestnik for the transaction, it was approved by both Lodges 172 and 173 members, the merger took place and, therefore, there is no Lodge 173 in existence.

The editor commends both parties and wishes continued progress and success toward their future in all undertakings. (Refer to their November 4th celebration ad in the advertisement section) on page 14. *0*

'Breathing Easy" PBS Special November 14 Aims at Teens, Families This year on Smokeout Eve, teenagers and their families will have the opportunity to tune in to local PBS affiliates for a special program on smoking and health.

The one-hour variety special will be broadcast the evening of November 14.

The special, produced by Pittsburgh station WQED, was co-funded by the American Cancer Society and the

American Heart Association, with additional funding from the American Lung Association and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

"Breathing Easy" is designed for 12 to 15-year olds and their families. The format includes quizzes, humorous skits and musical acts geared to a contemporary audience.

Special features include: a game show, "You Bet Your Lungs"; "The Breathing Easy News," facts about smoking and health; "No Buts About It," a situation comedy; and "Clearing the Air," a talk showstyle segment.

A "Breathing Easy Teachers Guide" has been developed by WQED and will be distributed

by ACS Public Education volunteers. The guide encourages teachers to use the special as a springboard for planning health education activities.

Viewers may write to the Society after the special airs for the "Breathing Easy Family Guide." The guide is designed to foster communication between teens and parents on smoking and health issues.

Tips for promoting "Breathing Easy" are included in the Great American Smokeout promotion guide.

Materials "Friendly" "With friends like me, who needs cigarettes?"

That's a question national honorary chairman Larry Hagman asks in a television public service announcement for the Smokeout. This year's new Smokeout materials support the friends helping friends concept.

The "Adopt a Smoker" campaign launched so successfully across the nation last year will continue, with adoption papers, "Adopt a Smoker" stickers and line art again available. In addition, a new "Adopt a Smoker — Help a Friend Quit" poster and stickers also will be available.

Adopted smokers can -again choose from several smoker's stickers — "I'm Quitting Today!," "I'm Taking the Day Off...From Smoking," "Be Nice to Me — I'm Trying to Quit," "Beware — Smoker Trying to Quit," "I'm a Nonsmoking Smoker" and "It Ain't Easy, But I'm Trying."

Friends might also want to pack a "survival kit" for their adopted abstainers. A new white plastic bag with the Smokeout logo is available for this purpose. Adopters will want to be sure to include a book of "headless" matches inscribed with the message, "...'Caused Care!" inside and the Smokeout logo on the cover.

Physicians can get in the act with a Smokeout prescription pad, advising their patients in no uncertain terms to "Please Stop Smoking."

All materials are free and available from your local American Cancer Society representative. Some materials are in limited supply — order early!

Dear Members and Friends, I apologize for this belated message since the last convention.

The past months and weeks have been a period of adjustments and I think you understand that.

I want to sincerely thank all those of you who commented their sentiments after the convention by letter, phone calls, and personal visits. I was deeply touched and I appreciated them all. Thank you so much!

During recent weeks, the published version of the SPJST History has been sent to those who had previously indicated they wished to order a copy. It is a beautiful book with a nice red cover.

I was proud to author the work, as explained in "Introduction and Acknowledgement", at the front of the book. I do want to acknowledge the patient and diligent work of my secretary, Mrs. Sarah Wilson, who typed every single word of the book.

She was superb! After so long a time, the history of the SPJST is now in written form, a lasting monument to the past and those responsible for its prominence among Texas (and national) fraternal organizations.

I must conclude with an appreciation for the association with the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge over the past almost 16 years and my congratulations to those elected and reelected to their respective positions.

I cannot forget my association with so many fine people, both as editor of the Vestnik for a number of years and as your president for almost 16 years. The progress and achievements for that period stand

Our Christmas Dinner/Program will be Sunday, December 9, the youth will have a program beginning at 4 p.m.; dinner at approximately 5 p.m.; the doors will be open at 3 p.m., so come early and enjoy the egg nog and fellowship. The lodge will provide turkey and dressing; all the ladies are asked to bring a vegetable or salad and a dessert. Please come out and have some fun and good food.

After Christmas, the New Year appears, suddenly! I am sure you will want to celebrate that night, and what better place than Flag Hall with the music of Jerry Haisler? The Salary Committee had their meeting and proposed no change in the salary of the officers and chairmen.

The Rules & Regulations Committee met and made a few changes. The R&Rs will be posted in the hall for your viewing and the changes will be voted on at the next meeting.

Most of you know that we elect our officers, chairmen and Board of Trustees at our November meeting.

If you would like to be an officer, etc., please feel free to run for an office. We would like to see some of our new members and old members as far as that goes, involved in our lodge. I don't know how to stress it enough to make you realize that, without your attendance, help, and your cooperation, etc., there wouldn't be a Flag Hall; you don't have to commit your soul, but, if everyone pitches in from time to time, we would have all the help we need. Come at least to one function and see if you don't enjoy yourself.

Come to our meeting, I know sometimes they get a little loud; we try to see that it doesn't happen, but people have different opinions and different ideas; they are all individuals; that's what makes us unique. But I know we can all work together for the future, to keep Flag Hall alive and well for many years to come. Remember to attend our November meeting and express yourself; we need you! I hope to see you then.

No. 28, East Bernard Meeting

Dear Members: The November meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be the 4th at the Fall/Winter starting time of 2 p.m.

Central Standard Time. On the agenda will be the usual reports plus any additional reports that may come into being. Business will be taken care of as needed.

The "Gathering", for the "Kaffeeklatsch", will take place, on schedule, after the meeting.

The October meeting, the 7th, was the last to be held under the Daylight Savings Time Schedule of 2:30 p.m. The meeting went quickly,

lasting only 33 minutes, with all reports approved as given. To complete some lodge business, one motion was made and passed.

Deputy Sheriff Donald J. Pietsch, a guest speaker, was introduced. He spoke on home security, home burglary and what to do when a person suspects something is wrong, when arriving home. Also, what to do when something does not seem right at a neighbor's home (when you know they are not home). All subjects that need to be known when someone lives alone. There was a question-and-answer session also held.

The door prize was won by Sister Ann Luquette, who in turn, donated it to the special kitchen fund. A jar filled with candy, donated by Sister Luquette, was won by Sister Mildred Srubar with exact guess of 49 candy pieces.

The table was, again, enhanced by donations from Sisters Janik, Kortis, Srubar, Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval. Everyone who stayed, enjoyed the “Kaffeeklatsch”.

President Henry Breitkreutz called our October 14 meeting to order at 3 p.m.

Dawn Pavelka led us in the pledge to our flag.

All officers were present, with the exception of Vernon Wood, who was absent due to ill health.

It was nice to have, as our guests, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Gaidusek; we hope they come again.

Those having birthdays in October were: Eddie Banik and Vernon Dulock. We sang "Happy Birthday" to them while they held the birthday cake and had their picture taken.

New member accepted was Michael Wade McCauley. Happy to have you aboard, Mike!

President Breitkreutz then presented Darrin Banik his scholarship award from the Supreme Lodge. Good work, Darrin, we are proud of you!

Our adult door prize was won by Louise Beran and youth winner was Richard Burney.

At our September meeting our Youth Club presented Rosemarie Banik a plaque for her many years as youth leader. Thank you, again, Rosemarie.

84 To Host District III Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: 1st Vice President Petr led the members in the pledge to our flag at our monthly meeting last Monday — followed by 2nd Vice President Ida Schultz giving the entertainment report.

Sunshine Committee report read as follows: Get-well cards to Sister Ceil Kretsinger, Cheri Petr, Michelle Marek and Brother Sid Pokladnik. New baby boy congratulations to Brother and Sister Gene and Vicki Sims and Brother and Sister Dean and Janet Hagar.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr gave the youth report saying the dancers at the fair made a good showing.

Also, the Christmas Party date is December 16, which will involve the youth program.

The softball fishing trip was enjoyed by the players and lots of fish were caught as reported by Brother Ben Jarma.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will meet at our lodge November 14 and Lodge No. 84 will be host. Please come and bring some pastry to be served -after the meeting and games.

The Czech Culture Society met here October 29th.

The Special Committee gave the monthly report.

Our House Committee reported the fans (which were donated in memory of Brother Willie Ondrusek

by Sister Carlyn and Brother Joe Ondrusek) in the Conference Room, are installed and working.

New members to our lodge are Andrew Mandak, Russell Sims and Kelly Sims.

November 3rd, the Mikula Band is playing for your dancing pleasure.

November 4, the District III meets at our lodge. If you haven't attended a meeting, lately, you might enjoy this Sunday; should you decide to attend, please bring pastry to be served with dinner.

Miscellaneous News About Lodge 88 Dear Members: I waited to write this after our Family Day and meeting. We had a very nice crowd considering all that was going on in town that day and around us. I was proud to see so many there and the things brought in for the crafts. We also had plenty of food and pastries; it all tasted very good.

Then we had a nice attendance at our monthly lodge meeting (127). We had a very special birthday celebrant, our own Frances Olexa who was 85 years old. We had a bouquet of balloons for her plus a lovely cake. We also had some wedding anniversary celebrants, namely, Edward and Willie Mae Stang (married 47 years), Alvin and Janet Raymond (6 years), Mike and Kathy Trefell (14 years), Roy and Evelyn Fogt (44 years), and John and Mary Kosut (38 years). We wish all those named celebrants many happy years.

While looking in the lodge book, I noticed that Mildred Holeman, our Board of Trustees chairman, and Doris Knapick had their birthday in October.

I also forgot to mention that, at our District V meeting, we honored Louis Hanus and his lovely wife for standing beside him in his work which meant him being on the road a lot. Thanks, again, Louis Hanus, for 8 years of hard work for all of us.

Also, at our District V meeting, our President Jerome J. Ermis, presented three of the SPJST's Scholarship winners checks to our Lodge 88 members; out of the six recipients, only three could be present. Congratulations to all the scholarship winners!

At our annual Czech Day held October 28, we had turkey with all the trimmings dinner from 11:30 a.m. until ?? There was free entertainment during the day at 2 p.m.; Parade of Costumes at 5 p.m., followed by a free dance with music by the Vrazels.

Wednesday, October 31, 1984—VESTMK/5 Mr. Dybala asked for blood donations for Mr. Erick Carson, who is at home now and is -a member of the Czech Concert Orchestra.

Going back to our District V Family Day, we had two very nice skits and a nice dance performed by four of our young girls who belong to the Waltrip School Drill Team, "The Frisk-a-Zaids"; the girls are Traci Green, Doris -Fabrygel, Gwenda Wilson and Amy Hodde. All of them did a fine job and we all enjoyed it; keep up the good work!

Willie Wehring announced that the Blue Room Party will be held December 16 at $10 per person with advance ticket sales only; the music for entertainment will be by the Ellinger Combo. I suggest that you make your plans now for December 16th.

The Hlahol Dramatic Club is in the midst of rehearsals for their upcoming English play on November 18, 1984. A comedy in three acts called "A Pair of Country Kids", the play will feature some veteran actors and several new ones. Lodge 92, Fort Worth Meeting Dear Members and Friends, With all officers present we began our October meeting with Sherry Watkins leading us in the pledge to the flag; all of the members of the youth club had gone bowling. One of the children usually performs this function.

Our guide, Richard Hubenak was ill so his son, Raymond, fulfilled Richard's duties. A moment of silence was observed for departed members, Joseph Becan and Ed Orrick.

Sister Christine Zich read her minutes with her usual perfection, and if one thinks it is an easy task getting down all the happenings of a two-hour session without a mistake, try it sometime.

Thank you cards were read from the Joseph Becan family for our floral offering and stipend for a Requiem Mass, and from Victoria Murphy expressing gratitude for our memorial to her late husband.

The next order of business was the acceptance of one new member solicited by Evelyn Spacek followed by her report and distribution of those ever welcome checks.

Martha Durham, sunshine chairperson, reported dispatching birthday cards to twelve members age sixty-five and over. She also sent get-well cards to Millie Waters who underwent surgery and to Lillie Matusevitch who made a quick trip to Fort Worth to sell her home here and then was hospitalized in San Antonio. It was noted that Efelyn and Joe Zak have not been in attendance lately because of

Evelyn's illness. Bennie Bartek missed this month's meeting; she was not feeling well. Kim Kubala suffered a back injury when she fell from a pyramid while performing cheerleader stunts at Lake Worth High School. Kim's mother, Helen was ill at home recently, also.

Many members felt the loss of Bill Krivanek, brother of Lillie Matusevitch and an uncle to many of them.

Bill died October 6. His father was a founding member of Lodge 92. Our condolences are extended to this wife, Elsie. We also wish to express our sympathy to Alene Kercho who lost her mother, Irene Zubb, October 2nd. Martha had help in reading this sunshine report from grandson, Paxton, who sat on the dais and wanted to monopolize the microphone.

It gives us pleasure to congratulate Rudy and Justine Chaloupka for observing their 48th wedding anniversary October 12, and also Rudolph and Millie Wruble on their 50th anniversary for October 27.

Saturday, the 13th of October, Frank and Marie Tesar had the honor of the presence of several hundred of their friends and relatives at a lovely 45th wedding anniversary that began with Celebration of Mass followed by dinner and a dance. Best wishes to all of these couples for many more happy celebrations.

A discussion was held in regard to some form of activity to raise funds for the Abused Children's Aid program and a committee was named to look into details of planning a dance for this purpose and to see if there was time left this year or if we should wait until after the first of next year.

We had several donations to the Building Fund: Martha and Dick Durham and Richard and Raymond Hubenak gave in memory of Irene Zubb and Bill Krivanek. Carl, Christine and Shirley Zich contributed for Irene Zubb and Joseph Becan.

The meeting adjourned at 3:15 and the participants enjoyed a nice meal of roast beef and vegetables prepared by Joyce and Marie Tesar complimented by those prizewinning "fat" desserts from the other ladies. Our November meeting will be Sunday the 11th at 2:00 p.m.

Happenings At Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

Brother Milan made welcome Kara Harrell.

Brother Milan read correspondence from Supreme Lodge president Brother Howard Leshikar and Brother Bernie Gebala.

The Metroplex Lodges' Party for Sunday, December 2 was finalized.

Due to it being the week after Thanksgiving we will have a Roast Beef and all the trimmings dinner.

All sisters are asked to bring a pastry. Dinner will be served from

12 noon to 2:30 p.m. and dance with the "Country Boys" of Ennis, 3 to 7 p.m. We hope you all come. Mark the date! Be looking for you!

The Lodge 154 and Sokol Halloween Party will be Wednesday, October 31 from 7 to 9 p.m., also games and costume prizes.

Sisters are asked to bring a bag of candy, cookies or goodies for the social following. The Youth Club will have a cake walk and would appreciate your help.

Our Christmas Party will be Thursday, December 20th at 7:30 p.m. Plan to come.

The Youth Club took off to go to Crystals for Pizzas and heard they had a wonderful time.

Our get well wishes go to Sister Georgia Simek after surgery. We were happy to hear Sister Millie Waters of Lodge 92 is doing well after surgery.

Brother Milan reported on our young member Kathryn Tesar receiving an SPJST Scholarship from the Supreme Lodge. Kathryn was also a winner in the Whiz Quiz competition in the State and Southwest Regional. Congratulations( Congratulations, also to Patti Williams, who made the Year Book staff at the University of Texas in Austin, where she is a freshman; also to Sister Marilyn Milan Douglass, who was elected Homecoming Queen of Castleberry High School at their 10-year Class Reunion.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Brother John Naughton and family of Berwyn, Illinois on the loss of his mother. May she rest in eternal peace.

We extend our best wishes to Cynthia Ann Schneider who was wed to Guy Wayne Walston of Arlington, at the University Christian Church followed by a reception at the Colonial Country Club. Cynthia is the daughter of Sister Mary (Krupka) Schneider andgranddaughter of Sister Mary Botik; also to Sister Heidi E. Kovar who was wed to James L. Stack at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, South Carolina. Heidi is a lifelong member of our lodge and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter J, Kovar of Dallas, formerly of Fort Worth. May they all have a long and happy life together.

The Milan family is glad to have Verka back, in the United States from Kunovice, Czechoslovakia and she is glad to be back.

From all of us at Lodge 154, we extend our congratulations to Brother Frank and Sister Mary Tesar who celebrated their 45th anniversary October 13, with a mass, delicious dinner and I heard the dance was great. We had to leave early and get to the hall. We hope they have many more years together. "God Bless You".

Austin Lodge 155 Activities The October 7 meeting of SPJST No. 155 followed by a hamburger cookout was held at the John B. Hejl spacious estate with the original charming hostess, Mrs. Lillie Hejl still in command. She is the former Lillie Kopecky, sister of the famous Dr. Joe Kopecky of San Antonio, deceased.

John and Lillie Hejl were among the very first settlers in the Shoal Mont Addition of Austin. Their lovely 2-story home reflects a history of weekend gatherings of family and friends mostly acquired within SPJST Lodge 155 which they organized in 1935. These weekly family gatherings have never ceased. Mrs. Hejl is indeed one to be admired — her enthusiasm, energy and inspiration is contagious to all who have the privilege of knowing her She is truly dedicated to SPJST holding countless meetings in her home and serving as an officer many years. Now she holds the title of Honorary President. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are members of the No. 155 lodge. The furtherest family, William Hejl, CPA, lives in Tampa, Florida, proud parents of 3 small children.

A Nominating Committee consisting of Faye Mares, Dale Jezisek and Sharon Gavin were named for the selection of officers to serve in 1985.

Donald Gavin was in charge in charcoal broiling of hamburgers after the meeting. Soon a table with goodies was set up and all ate a delicious supper. Thanks Donald, and his good wife, Sharon, for your culinary expertise.

Austin was drenched in the morning and the previous day and night. At noon the sun came out and the following members attended the outdoor event. They were John, Laverne, Janet and Diane Hejl, Mike Wood, Dale and Beth Jezisek, Gary Chmelir, Linda Johnson and her 3 children, Kenneth, Michael and Lindsey Ann, Faye Mares, Joe Mikolaj, Donald and Sharon Gavin, Lillie Hejl, and Raymond and Alice Prasatik. Our Appreciation From SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra And Choral Group Dear Members and Friends: The trip to the Louisiana World's Fair is history and it was a memorable occasion for the SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Group. They gave the best two performances ever and we are very proud of each and every one of the performers, and so should the SPJST. Although we are sponsored by Lodge 88, we feel that we represent the SPJST as a whole, and, in fact, the entire Czech Community.

Although Louisiana does not have a large Czech Community, there were at least twenty people by a show of hands in each audience who indicated that they understood the Czech songs. The auditorium was filled to capacity and the applause was enthusiastic. We received many compliments and the Fair Management was very much impressed.

It is time to thank the many organizations and individuals who gave us moral support and encouragement. Foremost is the Supreme Lodge SPJST and District V, as well as individual lodges.

Special thanks to Editor Rudy Sefcik who publicized the event and printed our letters and pictures in the Vestnik. Thanks, also to the Rosenberg-Richmond Chamber of Commerce, sponsors of the Fort Bend County Czech Fest, who raised $700 at a barbeque for which the orchestra played.

Numerous individuals donated $1, $5, $10, $20, and $25 at our various concerts throughout the summer, and one individual, Mr. Hubenak of Hubenak Chevrolet Co. in Rosenberg who dropped a $100 bill in the hat. Last, but, by no means least, Lodge 88 who sponsored the trip and underwrote the balance of the expenses, thank you! The trip was not cheap with two chartered Trailways buses and lodging at the La Quinta for eighty performers.

Thank you, one and all, from all of us in the Orchestra and Choral Group.

Both groups performed at Czech Day at Lodge 88 Sunday, October 28, which also will be history by the time this is printed due to our belated report. In addition, the Orchestra will play at the Harvest Festival in Needville Saturday, November 3rd.

Library, Archives, Museum Dear Readers: We have a problem in our department that I hope you can help us solve. We need some old men and lady mannequins. They can be in any condition I can repair just about anything that may require rebuilding. We have a snow white band uniform that sure would renew our band display. We also have an Army uniform that was worn in the last war and wounded three times.

In the ladies' department, we have two beautiful brides' outfits of the early 1900's that need to be shown.

Where to ask, call on the large department stores in your cities and ask for the display man; tell him that the mannequins will be a standing advertisement for his store; tell him we have had visitors from 47 states of the union and 16 foreign countries and that we enter each donor on our GOLDEN BOOK which is examined

by thousands of people. The mannequins can be damaged or broken. I can use them in any stage of repair. There are many old ones that are seldom used just gathering dust in many cases, the display people will be glad to get rid of them.

Our LAM Department is growing in both Library and Museum. We have just received a nice shipment of books from Mr. Louis Spacil Library in Duluth, Minn. and a very nice donation of an old, old lawnmower and bicycle and lots of unusual tools from Mr. and Mrs. Jake G. Skinner of Tyler, which will enhance several areas of our museum. Come see them, the ADMISSION IS FREE and, don't forget to tell your friends.

Friendship Club of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, The October meeting was attended by 26 members along with guests Mary and Benny Pavey and Bobby Holford. We made welcome our new member, Ima Lou Laplant.

The October birthday members were Louise Oujesky, Frank Tesar, Bessie Brizina and Ima Lou Laplant.

The Family Night Thanksgiving Dinner will be Thursday, November 1, 1984. A turkey dinner and all its trimmings will be served at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a nominal charge of $3.00 for adults and $1.50 for children up to 12 yrs. of age, who are non-members.

The November hostesses will be Eva Dockery, Millie Bell and others who wish to volunteer to help serve the food.

Members, please remember to return your sold quilt tickets for the handmade quilt; our drawing will be held after dinner to determine the lucky winner.

We express our sincere sympathy to Alene (Zubb) Kercho and her family on the loss of our member Mrs. Irene Zubb, who passed away on October 2, 1984; also to Mrs. Albina Mikusek and her family for the loss of her son, Danny Mikusek who passed away October 4th in Irving, Texas and her son-in-law, William (Bill) Krivanek who passed away on October 6th in Bridgeport, Texas.

The 18 members of the Budvarka Orchestra from Czechoslovakia who performed at the West Fraternal Auditorium recently left the State of Texas proudly wearing their western hats and western bandanas.

The three avid greeters who made this possible were no other than Lad Maly, Ben Kolar and Anton Rejcek.

The 45th wedding anniversary celebration of Mary and Frank Tesar was indeed a delightful evening October 13th. It was good seeing the Kubecka and Kurtz families of Shiner, Texas.

Through hard work and dedication, the grand opening of the new Knights of Columbus hall in Ennis, Texas on Sunday, October 14th was a huge success. Andy and Millie Mlenar of Oklahoma and many other out-of-state visitors can testify that the Texas mud can really stick.

We extend our congratulations to Cynthia Ann Schneider and Guy Walston who were married on October 20th at the University Christian Church, with their reception held at the Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth. Cynthia is the granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Botik.

May I encourage all of you to exercise your right to vote in our Democratic society for the candidates of your choice on the ballot of the November 6th General Election.

Kulhanek Reunion Held Recently

Twelfth

The twelfth Kulhanek reunion of the descendants of Antonin and Celestina Kuihanek was held Sunday, September 30, 1984 at Sts. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsburg, Texas. At 10 a.m. a Holy Mass, for deceased members of the Kulhanek family, was celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church by the Reverend Werner Buckholt assisted by Deacon Jerry Kulhanek of Galena Park, Texas. Gift bearers were Messrs. Anton, Gene, Delbert, and David Kulhanek.

Registration of the two hundred relatives attending began at 11 a.m.

A basket lunch was served at 12:30 p.m. The Rev. Buckholt led the prayer before serving of the meal.

At 2 p.m., a business meeting was held with Mrs. Jo Ann Canik, president, presiding. Deacon Jerry Kulhanek led the group in reciting the Lord's Prayer. The minutes were read by Mrs. Ruth Ann Wunderlich, secretary. Mrs. Cora Wostarek, treasurer, gave her report.

Mr. Leonard Kulhanek, historian, gave a detailed report of his book, The Kulhanek Family History Book, which was printed this year. The book contains photos, history, coatof-arms, letters, reports of previous Kulhanek reunions, and the family tree of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek and their descendants.

In Corpus Christi is also daughter' Katherine with her two daughters, Cassandra and Hephany; one stepgrandson, Donald Loving with 4 children Tania, James, Timothy and Elizabeth. There is a total of 46 persons in the family. *** (Supplement) Dear Editor: With my moving, I am little late in writing to the newspaper. I live in a home where there are more than 3 persons! Relatives, families and neighbors, plus visitors come often.

It is a pleasure to see the animals and birds, besides the people who are all friendly. I made my home in Corpus Christi for 43 years and 5 months. My property was sold to a young man (a neighbor).

I have been asked, why were the Supreme Lodge officers' service terms changed from January 1st to July 1st?

I am disappointed for changes not being made in the Vestnik; "talk" is about saving "money." Money! It does not fit in this case. In my opinion, there are other places less important to save "money," money!

We collected items to give to a family whose house burned down and one child was burned to death and another one is in serious condition.

All the fun started about 6 p.m. with a hot dog supper. Judging of our costumes was next. Michael Chapman was voted in having the ugliest costume, Kathleen Rejcek was voted as having invented the most unusual costume and Cynthia Price, a visiting youth, had the cutest costume. All were given a cash prize.

Michele and Andrew Zapletal guessed the amount of candies that were in the jars. Then, we all played games that everybody was making up. I think everyone had a blast.

As we were going home, the youth leader, Linda Trojacek, passed out a bag of goodies.

Our next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. November 6th. Plans for our Christmas Party will be made.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 9, Snook, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed sister ALBINA KOVAR DALCHAU, who passed away Saturday, August 11, 1984, in a Bryan hospital.

Sister Dalchau was born March 31, 1919 in Snook. Her parents are Henry Kovar (deceased) and Minnie Vajdak Kovar.

She attended school in Snook, graduating as the valedictorian of

her class in 1937. She married Robert E. Rubach of Snook and they became the parents of three children; Margaret Jean, Robert Jr., and Roberta Ann. After the death of her husband, Sister Dalchau attended beauty school and opened the first beauty shop in Snook and operated it for many years.

In 1955, Sister Dalchau married Harry A. Hart of Somerville. He operated a dry cleaning business there. They eventually bought a home in Somerville and lived there until his death in 1972. Sister Dalchau worked in Somerville as a teller in the Citizens State Bank.

In March 1979 she was married to Waldo E. Dalchau, retired superintendent of the Snook Public Schools. They lived in Somerville.

Mr. Dalchau passed away in May, 1982.

Sister Dalchau was a member of the First Methodist Church in Somerville, where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Burleson County Historical Society, the Burleson County Historical Commission, the Order of the Eastern Star 7/8 245, and the SPJST Lodge No. 9.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 13 in the First Methodist Church of Somerville, with Rev. Jay Barns officiating.

Burial followed in the Snook Cemetery.

Survivors include her mother, Minnie Kovar of Snook; her daughters and sons-in-law, Roberta and Thomas Young of Shreveport, La., and Margaret and Leroy Jakubik of Bryan; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bobby) and Marilyn Rubach of Snook; three stepchildren, Waldo E. Dalchau Jr. and John Michael Dalchiu of Brenham and Kay Waldene Wright of New Jersey; three brothers, Raymond Kovar, Richard Kovar and Edwin Kovar, all of Snook; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Viola) Sebesta of Wellborn and Mrs. Arnold (Minnie) Foltermann of Bryan; five grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

May our departed sister rest in everlasting peace.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. A. B. Plunkett; one daughter and son-in-law, Janette and Jim Lee of Iowa Park; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Pearl) Young of Abbott and Mrs. Alston Lee (Dora Lee) Williams of Hillsboro; two brothers, Tom Plunkett of Abbott and Murrie Plunkett of Whitney; one grandson, Perry Lee of Henrietta; two greatgrandchildren; three sisters-in-law,

Tommie Plunkett of Hillsboro, Marie Plunkett of Abbott and Irene Plunkett of Athen; one brother-inlaw, Rev. Luther Hill of Dallas; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 4 p.m.

Monday, August 27 at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Mike Shaw officiating. Burial was in the Vaughan Cemetery.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 167, Penelope wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother CHARLES FABIAN, 90, of Fort Worth, who died early Monday morning, October 15, 1984 in a Fort Worth nursing home. He was born September 1, 1894, in Schulenburg, Texas and was a former resident of Penelope.

Brother Fabian married Hattie Janek in 1919, and she died in 1973.

A retired farmer, he was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of the Brethren Church, also a member of SPJST Lodge 167.

Survivors include four sons, Charlie Fabian of Penelope, George Fabian of Dallas, Henry Fabian of Houston and Joe R. Fabian of Rosenberg; one daughter, Edith Cross of Fort Worth; one sister, Emily Rypel of West; 14 grandchildren; and 12 greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, at the Brethren Church in West with Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Burial was in the Penelope Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Otto Flentege in 1960 and William Chaloupka in 1980.

Survivors include her mother, Margaret Elizabeth Coots of Temple; three sisters, Mrs, Laura Mae Selby of Temple, Mrs. Ada Belle Steck of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Harriet Waldvogel of Houston and one brother, Ernest Coots of Loveland, Ok. Items of Interest History of I. J. Gallia (Translation by Jerry E. Valchar) Translation from the Czech language printed in the Vestnik dated June 20, 1956 at West, Texas.

Editor's remarks: (not your present Editor R. J. Sefcik) "First President of SPJST" "One of the most active Czech pioneers in Texas in the years prior to the organization of the SPJST in the ten year period from 1887-1897 was Ignac J. Gallia. Family original name was spelled "Galija" and his forefathers were residents of a small community known as "Mysi" in Northeastern part of Morave.

The deceased first and also third president of our SPJST published his life history in Czech American newspapers and calendars a number of times. The last life history that he wrote was about eight years prior to his death after he reached the age of over eighty years. In this case that it was his last summary of his own life.

This history of Ignac J. Gallia is printed here verbatim." *•0 My motto was and still is "Do not do unto others that you do not want them do to you". I was born at Misim in Morave February 29, 1859. Father was Ondrej Gallia and mother Marie Kladiva. I came to America in the fall of 1859. There were four brothers: Josef, Charlie, Valentin and myself and two sisters, Terezie and Clara.

We came on a sail boat and, after a number of weeks sailing, we arrived at Galveston, Texas. Then by rail to Alleyton, Texas, which was the end of the railroad. There waiting for us was Valentin Haidusek and son, Augustin Haidusek, Josef Petr and others. They loaded us on a ox wagon and they carried us to their home at Dubina. Besides our family there were about twenty other Moravian families with us. When we arrived they pulled some moss and gathered some straw and bedded all of us under some bushy trees.

Next day all went to look for rent some land with Augustin Haidusek, Josef Petr and Holub as escorts.

Some found rent property in the community, others went as far as -Bluff. Our father, V. Pavlicek and widow Sindler found rent at an old bachelor named Caldwell three miles west of present city of Schulenburg. Our family and family of Pavlicek took one log house for their quarters and Mrs. Sindler with her three children in the home of bachelor. Caldwell and later he married her. She could not speak the English language and he could not speak the Czech language but they understood each other. For the first five years and during the Civil War we were renting from Mr. Caldwell.

After the war father found an old Indian farm at the creek of Mulberry about three miles from present Praha, Texas, where we farmed. In 1870 father had built two rent houses, covered our first log house with boards, enlarged it and built a cellar with it. On our farm he also built a general merchandise store and tavern and operated it until his death in the year 1876 when the horses were frightened and ran

Drier years followed and the price of cotton was better. Therefore, from our seven associations and one hundred seventeen members from surrounding communities, only seventeen members remained. The others said that with onions and potatoes is too much work. The remaining stayed with me until my departure from Engle. Among those were the better farmers as my former teacher F. J. Pesek and his wife and family, John Zapalac, John Fojtik, Jos. Petras, Hynek Haidusek, Ed Kainer, Karl Hertel, Olde family, Jos. Nierlich, John Schubert, Kalich family, and myself.

Then, in the year 1911, I received a good offer in Houston from the against prohibition side and traveled in the Czech and Polish communities in Texas and among the Germans, where I appointed agents for myself to sell land. After the election I already had experience in land business in the year 1889 where I was helping my brother-in-law F. Rusek to sell land and sent prospective purchasers to El Campo. The first that bought were John Melcher and Christian Bruns a section for $3.00 per acre cash. Then about twenty others bought land on payments for $4.00 per acre. Among them were Ignite Kocurek, Gehard Bruns and others, but a hurricane came in the year of 1890 and destroyed everything that was built. The people moved away, but those who stayed are satisfied and the community of El Campo is heavily populated and continues to grow.

Then Jos. and Frank Rusek purchased thousand acres, where Then, after a year, I married and today is Skidmore and signed an accepted employment with the firm obligation to sell a bigger plantation of White and Bradshaw in La between Skidmore and Beeville in Grange. We sold our business and I took employment at Charlie Brunner in Praha, who had a general store, saloon, dance hall and post office.

The first month Mr. Brunner made me an assistant postmaster and head manager of his business and saloon, where we also presented plays with Anton, Josef, and Marie Kulhanek, Edward Boehm, Anton and Charlie Nestra, F. J. Pesek, John, Anna, and Marie Nykel, Cathrine Svehla, Marie Skopa and I. J. Gallia. We named our association Josef Kajetan Tyl. John Boehm painted our association name on the curtain including the Czech lion and Moravian eagle: Anton Kulhanek and myself helped him to paint the curtain and also helped to assemble the stage and after each show helped to clean the stage for a dance place. Here we had work from early morning until late at night each day and Sunday they danced until morning. Then the firm of Tuttle and Cockrill in Flatonia offered me better salary and Sunday could use my time for an English school. Ed Boehm worked for the firm of Harrison and Lane; then we were together each night and learned the English language better and prepared for our shows for our association.

I had it good there but since I had confidence and leaned upon my many known friends, I opened a general merchandise store with a cousin of my betrothed Anna Nykel on trial for one year in Flatonia.

Also in the year of 1910 my brother-in-law F. Rusek came for me to Engle, so I would go with him to the Rio Grande Valley, that he and a Houston capitalist have north of Sam Fordyce in Star County 30,000 acres of rich land, that they want to establish a genuine cotton plantation according dry farming system. Here they will give ten thousand acres for cotton, built a gin and general store (commissary) and for my family to arrange for a home in McAllen. All that he will expect from me is that I would supervise all and hire myself the type of help that I feel is good, that the Houston capitalist will give as much money into this as will be needed. I told Frank, "Did you calculate how much it will cost?" He said: "The estimate is half a million dollars, if more would be needed, they will give more."

We rode and examined the whole area of 30,000 acres that they bought about for three dollars an acre. The land was of different color, but all was suited for dry farming.

Also, on the north side of this land, were excellent farms of old Mexicans, that were supposed to have been settled prior to hundred years and praised themselves. Now I tried this for three months what can be done, hired some Mexicans for clearing of land and plowing of land, but a revolution was started in Mexico. Madero who waited for the presidency of Mexico, was placed in jail, and our workers argued every day and every week and went to Mexico for the revolution movement. Hired some others but they were not better. Digging of stumps and clearing the land cost was over $20.00 an acre. Finally one from the oldest Houston bank homes closed the doors and our capitalist had over half a million dollars bound there, so he told me to wait with the work, until the bank gets all in order, but this was the time of masters and the bank had to sell all.

Whereas nothing was positive, when the money would be available then I accepted an offer from an old land firm of J. S. Daughty in Houston.

We were very prosperous until the beginning of the European war, (WWI) and until 1916 when the United States entered the war.

From this time the young men went to training and older parents quit buying farms. After the war the roads commenced to be better for automobiles and the discharged moved to town, that they would not work so hard on farms. From this time the farm business was slow.

My national associations. In the year 1887 I was active member of the readers association of Svojan in Prague and active member of theatrical association Josef Kajetan Tyl. In the year 1884 I helped to organize Lodge Texas Number 104 C.S.P.S. in Praha. In the same year, on October 18, I organized a C.S.P.S. Lodge Radhost in Schulenburg Number 114, then in Dubina and Deanville. In the year 1886 I helped to organize a democratic newspaper the “Svoboda", where I was president for two years. In the year 1891 I was a delegate of the Texas C.S.P.S. lodges in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where I pressed for many changes in the bylaws, which were not approved.

Then I threatened the delegates of the convention, that if the changes were not adopted now or in the next convention, that we will be forced to organize a new association, in this case we will do it in Texas.

We waited, but even the next convention did not adopt our recommended changes, for example, same rights for women, division of payments according to age, etc.

Then I started to write and finally called a meeting of all the Texas lodges and we organized in La Grange, Texas, our own association the SPJST in December 1896.

I am very happy about this up to present time, even if I did not realize any personal benefits. Served two terms as president of the Supreme Lodge and charged five dollars per year for postage and envelopes and I know it cost me more. Presided as chairman of all conventions until the convention in Caldwell.

My school education or aim of education started at home. My father taught us until the year 1869, then Mr. F. J. Pesek came from Cechy and started to teach Czech in a log cabin on Sramek farm.

Later the citizens built a public school at Praha and added and English teacher Mr. Dobsse, where I went until the death of my father in the year 1876. Then I attended night school in Flatonia and La Grange and also read law at the firm of Timmons and Brown in La Grange.

But the law cunning tricks of attorneys, I hated. I had an offer from county attorney, Mr. Hill that I join him in partnership and I told him that the longer I observe those law suits of yours, here, that I do not like, but also hate. That I will stay in business, where a person does not have to turn so much to make a living. In this time, as now, those best attorneys argued before every suit, what is law and what is not!

Those judges at that time, all were college-educated and experienced for many years as judges of county suits, where each gave his opinion. Then how can just an ordinary attorney be sure that his opinion with the highly experienced judges will be approved. Now after 81 years in Texas, I am continuing in reviewing different questions, I remain still uneducated and continue to learn further.

To know not just the law, but also the nature of people of different nationalities. What we came through we know but what will come in the future, for that we all have to wait, just like all uneducated or educated. Otherwise, we all in this world matter are stupid.

Then I started again to hang on to oil enterprises. Organized a Czech company, but just as soon as I started to advertise there were four other Czech enterprises of this type formed. All have fallen, but ours so far holds land purchased and so far we have hope for a better future. My health so far is passable and I hope to reach one hundred years when better times will come. *** Editor's remarks: (Editor of Vestnik in 1956) When, in May of 1956, I was gathering material for the life history of the deceased first president and third Supreme Lodge president of our SPJST I readied

for my telephone directory of the City of Houston, so I could call some of his descendents. I was surprised, that the name of I. J. Gallia was still in the directory. When I called, I found that the telephone was not connected. I traveled to the former residence of Brother Gallia, where it is located in a quiet residential area, just like it was fifteen or twenty years ago, but next to a heavy traveled, modern street from west to east. The big residence was vacant. A big sign stated it's for sale. I wrote down the telephone number but the number was out of order.

In the records of Lodge Number 88, Pokrok Houston, to which Lodge Brother Gallia was a member, I found that our first and third president of our society died July 20, 1946 and was buried in the Brookside Memorial Park.

Five daughters of deceased Brother Gallia are living over the state. His son Ed L. Gallia died in Dallas about five years ago. His wife, Theresa, lived until January 1956 and was buried at the side of her husband.

The End of Bilezoluky's Idyll In our world of today there are not too many places left where something did not influence their existence. Some were touched by the wars or revolutions, in others someone of outstanding quality was born or died. Hence there are only a few places left where life is so trivial that even the most unpretentious chronicle writer can write at least a few lines about.

Btezoluky at Drnava Creek though, a hamlet among lush green meadows and rich fields belongs in this rare group. The local inhabitants are diligent and laborous, they do not appreciate excitement and weather calamities. Perhaps this is the cause of absence of faithlessness or fornication, fires and hailstorms in the village. This is most likely the reason why local people stay away from drunkeness, — with the possible exception — during the anniversary feast - and why they do not enjoy card games for money, unless at the mentioned occasion. Thus, for these reasons and habits the inhabitants of this settlement grow slowly but surely rich.

These facts must have perhaps influenced the people of Btezoluky to reconstruct the old fashioned homes into the neat houses, to change the cowsheds into garages and the marshy ditch overflowing with manure into asphalt promenade because they must, through this reasoning, believe to live together in this serene communal life until death will them part.

Because of their prosperous composure the citizenry lost its wariness and did not closely observe — to its sorrow, of course — Vaclav Placek Junior, employee of an agriculture cooperative "New Life Brezoluky" and son of a previous independent farmer. People of the hamlet took into consideration, though sneeringly, the shaggy beard, mustache and sideburns of Vaclav Junior because it was unheard of in all Drnava Valley, that someone from a farmer's clan would go around whiskered in his youth.

But where, of where is the last year's snow?

Well, to heck with last year's snow.

But where, of where did the blushes and chastity of Birrezoluky"s maidens disappear to? Why, Vaclav Placek Junior was changing girls like one who changes his daily socks, riding them with him on the motorcycle he bought, which was the first machine of its kind in the community. Not to be left behind, young bucks of the village purchased motorcycles, too, only to find out that Placek Junior pulled another ace from his sleeve when he arrived at the settlement in his own car. Moreover he became a fancy dandy of Btezoluky and other surrounding settlements belonging to Btezoluky's parish, by keeping up with the latest makes of new cars.

When the village was filled by domestic and foreign-made cars the elders hoped peace, satisfaction and tranquility would, again, reign there.

They longed for the old times when life was like one sunny everlasting day and everyone enjoyed himself according to his own way!

What an underestimation it was of Btezoluky's fateful figure by the village fathers! Although wars, revolutions, fire and hail calamities somehow avoided this community, it could not escape being the birthplace of Placek Junior.

Our dandy seemed to be uneasy lately as it seemed to him his popularity was floating away like water in Drnava Creek. He felt a need to accomplish at least one more glorious act to impress the population of his native village for a really long, long time. Then he could retire, marry Mary Krahujec and have 3 kids by her, boys if possible.

This task was not easy as it was clear to him that the local public would not be surprised anymore by some trivial laughable matter, one talks about for half an hour, or some worn out joke which would burst like a soap bubble. At last though he solved his dilemma and chose a very delightful Sunday afternoon for his grand departing finale.

This day was really beautiful, the birds were singing as if paid extra for every peep they made, the farmers — seniors and juniors were polishing their cars while their wives were adding water to make sauce in the pans with chunks of golden looking pork. Simply, every ordinary citizen and member of civic or religious authority was where he was supposed to be, that is, in the community. Well, on this sunny afternoon the citizenry heard some strange noise which reminded them of something almost ancient, and long ago discarded by progress . . . Even wise old grampa Spatenka heard it. He leaned forward as if to catch this outlandish sound better, opened his mouth bare of teeth and half surprisingly and half from fright hollered: "A carriage!"

Someone rides in a horse drawn carriage!"

And it was a fact. A carriage pulled by a horse appeared in the curve of the road driven by no one else but Vaclav Platek Junior. The people were so flabbergasted they dropped their rags and autopolishes, their faces expressing envy with one common thought of them all: Vaclav Placek has a carriage and a horse!

Our hero was sitting dignified in the coachman's seat, seemingly not noticing anyone, turning finally into the gateway of his birthplace farm.

In a couple of minutes there was a

great commotion behind the gate.

Angry hollering was heard from the yard.

"Get this blasted animal out of here, or I will break the back of both of you!" shouted the strong voice of Placek senior.

"Are you not afraid of God's punishment?" said Mrs. Placek weepingly, who was of Catholic religion.

"Who do you think is going to take care of this — this animal? Who do you think is going to clean after it and feed it, hmm? — Shut up — you have seen a horse just on the picture and once in the circus! Who ever heard of it — to bring a mare to the village!

Crazy thing like this could originate only in your stupid head!" hollered Placek senior and then he brought forth the strongest point of this argument: "And where are you going to put it? Is the mare going to be with us in the living room?"

"To the stable" — "What? Into the stable? The car is going to rot in the yard and this, this blasted mare is going to take over the stable? Out of my house, before I really damm you to hell!"

At this moment several wise patriarchal men of the community parted from the crowd congregated around Plaeek's farmhouse and hurried for the chairman of the local National Committee and — for good measure — for a priest.

Neither latter nor former authority was able though to bring to Btezoluky the previous tranquility and former idyll. The elders are not now on speaking terms with the young males who are completely disobeying them by looking through the outlaying storage buildings, shacks, attics and stables for remains of former carriages. During Sunday, holidays and, unfortunately, even during the week, they take off in their cars looking for carriages and horses in the district and through the whole county. They get chummy with former horse traders, whoever are left, and feast them with beer, liquor and whiskey. These young men know well that whoever does not have a carriage soon will be out of fashionable society. Thus he will not be able to sit at the place of honour at the Firemen's Ball and will not even be able to dance with Rosy Drtflek who looks more like a wooden board than a young woman and who is smashing, without pity, the shoes and toes.

Relief is not in sight and now a terrible tension hangs everywhere in Btezoluky because last Sunday Vaclav Placek rode horseback instead of in the carriage and behind them ran his bulldog very much annoyed by this company.

Oh, God, why did you turn your face away from your people of Btezoluky at Drnava Creek?

This witty write up by Ilja Kue'era points satirically to the never-ending struggle between the progress and the old-fashioned way of life.

Although this universal conflict was and is a theme of many articles, romances or novels, Ilja Kueera brought forth somewhat a new style to present this dilemma to the readers. Let's hope Kueera's mentioned approach to this problem of the human race would be just as evident in my English translation of his article "The End of Btezolulcy's Idyll" written in the Czech language.

The Comparison of Adjectives.

1. The comparative degree of adjectives is formed by means of replacing the usual endings 4, -a, -é, -f by one of the following suffixes: -ejif—Used with the majority of adjectives. Final hard consonants change in the following way: h-i, chi, k-E, r-t, d-d' ( = de), t-t' ( =te), n-n ( = ne), sk-if ( = ck-Et' ( = Ete).

Examples: ubohf-uboiejM, horkyhoreej§f, divoky-divoeej§f, chytrychyttej§f, §karedy-§karedej§f, peknej§f, vesely-veselej§f, lidskylid§tej§f, prakticky-praktietej§f, but: bohaty, stars, jednoduchY take -§f.

LINHA SINGERS V roce 1983 si vokalne instrumentalni skupina Linha Singers p •ipomnela dvacet let sve umelecke einnosti. Tento kolektiv ve§el do ovedomi kulturni vefejnosti v eskoslovensku a v zahraniei jako interpret a popularizator hudby 17. a 18. stoleti.

Zakladatelem skupiny je Jiti Linha, kterY v roce 1963 seskupil okolo sebe nekolik mladYch lidi, s nimii zpoeitku zaeal zpivat taneeni. Soubor byl pozdeji roz§iten o instrumentalni skupinu a posleze se stal soueasti Armadniho umeleckeho souboru Vita Nejedleho. Pak vystupoval v divadle Rokoko a pracoval deset let ye Statnim divadelnim studiu. Od roku 1981 je zaelenen mezi komorni Mesa Symfonickeho orchestru hlavniho mesta Prahy FOK.

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP Four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. The certificate must be a permanent plan of insurance in the face amount of $5,000 or more. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

Each year a member may apply whether they have been a previous recipient or not.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Applicants who are high school seniors must take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) or the American College Test (A.C.T.) given by the

Criteria for selecting scholarship winners from among high school seniors include: • Results of the S.A.T. and/or A.C.T. • High school records • References and recommendations • The Committee's judgment of the applicant's potential • SPJST involvement Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

Exact due dates and requirements for both the freshman and undergraduate programs will be furnished the member after they have sent in the initial application prior to December 31.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

following the announcement of the scholarship award. They must attend college on a full-time basis and carry a normal academic load without interruption and in accordance with the college calendar. They must maintain academic and personal standards satisfactory to the college and to the Committee.

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholar ship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge- has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them at any time as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST. The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Winners of an SPJST scholarship must enter an accredited college not later than the fall term

Funds covering schola:ship awards are remitted direct to the college the recipient is to attend, after proof of enrollment is received by the Supreme Lodge. Any unused funds will be returned to the Supreme Lodge.
