Presenting Sister Setek a lifetime membership certificate is District V Director, Louis Hanus. Louis Hanus also serves as vice chairman of the Board of the Supreme Lodge SPJST.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge of Temple, Texas, allocated $300.00 to the Czech Department of St. John High School. The money is to be used for the purchase of Czech records, tapes, music sheets, dictionaries, library books and film strips.

The Czech language is presently being taught at St. John on the seventh grade and high, school

levels. Not only are the students learning of their rich heritage, they are also learning to speak, read and write the Czech language.

The faculty and students of St. John High School, in Ennis, Texas, are extremely grateful to the SPJST Supreme Lodge for its generous donation which will help them in their studies.

Sister Marie Setek Outlives Policy Sister Marie Setek of Dayton attained the age of 96 September 24, 1984, and became the 71st person in the history of SPJST to outlive the actuarial table of her life insurance policy. In a special program at her home on her birthday, District V Director Louis Harms presented Sister Setek a lifetime membership plaque. Sister Setek was honored by

the presence of numerous members of her family and several officials of SPJST Lodge No. 65, in addition to Brother Hanus. Mrs. Vlasta Marek, vice president of Lodge 65, extended congratulations in behalf of the local lodge. Afterwards refreshments were served by Mrs. Rose Dlouhy, (Continued on page 3)

Are you afraid of something?

Almost everyone is. You will be surprised if you check yourself, how many times a day you unconsciously prefix your remarks with "I Am Afraid." For example: "I'm afraid it's going to rain." "I'm afraid I'll be late for my appointment," or "I'm afraid we are going to have war."

Fear is the most insidious disease known to man. It claims more victims than all the "dread diseases" put together. Its ghostly, shadowy, form is an apparition clothed in misery, suffocation, and defeat. Like any object in darkness, it can assume grotesque shapes and appear more formidable than it actually is. Fear is inadvertently handed down along with the family furniture. How many times have you heard a parent say: "Don't climb that fence or you will fall and hurt yourself," or "if you don't go to sleep the goblins will get you." Is it any wonder when the child grows into adulthood this creeping paralysis is deeply imbedded in his subconscious mind? He is afraid of losing his job — afraid of old age.

While walking in the fields did you ever come across a large flat stone which had lain, nobody knows how long? Have you turned one over? There are crawling creatures intermingled with blades of grass colorless and matted together. But as soon as the stone is turned and the wholesome light of day touches things, then all of them that enjoy the luxury of legs, rush around wildly in a general stampede for underground retreats from the region poisoned by sunshine. These little insects might well represent your fears. Bring them out in the light of day and watch them scamper away.

Emerson once said: "Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain." President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1932 (in the height of the "Great Depression") said: "The only thing we have to fear is FEAR itself!" *** November 15, smokers across the country will hide their matches, hunt through "survival kits," bite their fingernails and heed the advice of their well-meaning friends.

What's the occasion? The Great American Smokeout, that third Thursday in November when millions of smokers try to end their habit — cold turkey — for just 24 hours.

This year, the Smokeout celebrates its eighth anniversary as a light-hearted day for smokers.

Encouragement and incentives are offered nationwide by American Cancer Society volunteers to help smokers make it through the day.

Larry Hagman marks his fourth year as national honorary chairman.

Amanda Blake, the actress who portrayed Miss Kitty on TV's popular "Gunsmoke" series, will serve as honorary chairman in Texas. Blake lives in Austin and is a recipient of the Society's Courage Award forr her personal triumph over cancer.

Volunteer efforts will be coordinated in Texas by Smokeout chairman Russell Autry of El Paso.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Last year, the "Smokeout Shootout" planned by Gainesville won a national "GASPAR" award for hospital promotion. Stephen Weinstein chaired the committee.

Now, more than ever before, hospitals nationwide are feeling the impact of cost-containment measures and the need to seek alternative healthcare delivery systems.

One of the more popular alternative delivery systems of late is that of wellness programs and health promotion. Historically, the United States healthcare system does not lend itself to the idea of "preventive medicine" or promotion of wellness. Our insurance reimbursement mechanisms today tend to "treat" the disease process, rather than to "prevent" that illness.

Now, however, more than ever before, our local hospitals can be, and certainly should be, involved in wellness and preventive measures.

What better entry into the scheme of wellness than through the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout!

As a hospital administrator, I am well aware of the avid audience available to Smokeout fans right in my own institution. Often, one unfortunately finds a great number of smokers among healthcare professionals themselve. Today, more than ever before, it is incumbent upon those professionals to set the pace, to develop the standard, and to serve as leaders to the general public.

Inservice education and staff development are two good areas in which to begin. If an employee wellness nurse is present, she/he is also a good source. A Community Relations or Public Relations Department is always interested in a good image for the local hospital.

What better mechanism than to become involved in the promotion of wellness concepts through affiliation with ACS and GASO? The approach to the local hospital should be as a network member, as a partner in health promotion and fitness. A good point to stress is the availability of the hospital, "if it is needed in times of illness," and the additional availability of the facility as a community member of the healthcare team. Let the hospital know that it is fortunate to have a mechanism such as GASO, through which to reach out even further to the community at large, in a joint effort aimed at reducing the number of smokers and increasing longevity. ***

Sister Setek was born September 24, 1887 in Warrenton, Fayette County, Texas. She was one of 13 More than 600 leading children born to Rosalie and Joseph fraternalists from throughout the Stasney. The family moved to United States and Canada attended Crosby in 1900. the 98th Annual Meeting of the Sister Marie married Frank Setek National Fraternal Congress of in 1910 and the two made their home America at the Diplomat Resort and in nearby Dayton. They owned and operated a bakery in Dayton Country Clubs in Hollywood, featuring Czech pastries and served Florida, September 30-October 3, that community until their 1984.

Attending from SPJST were Viceretirement. They were the parents President Bernard Gebala (V-P of of three children, one now deceased.

NFCA Fraternal Section), Jerry Sister Setek presently lives with Mikulas, Jr. (Director of NFCA her son, Joe, in the house they built State Fraternal Section), Cyrill (Sid) over 70 years ago. Her daughter, Marie, lives next door. She lost her Pokladnik (Director of NFCA Communication Section) and SPJST husband in 1964.

Sister Setek joined the- SPJST District V Director Louis Hanus. through Lodge 136, Dayton, on - The NFCA represents 96 August 1, 1915. She transferred to fraternal benefit societies having more than ten million members in Lodge 65 February 1, 1965.

A special thanks to Mrs. Dlouhy, the two countries. It was organized Mrs. Marek and Mrs. Prochazka for in 1886 for "permanently uniting all much of the information in this legitimate fraternal benefit societies article, and serving as hostesses for for purposes of mutual information, this beautiful occasion and to benefit and protection."

"I believe most American people feel very strongly about the Statue of Liberty and would be more than willing to contribute to its restoration if given an opportunity at the local level," Miss Farmer said.

"I'm sure many of our lodges will pitch in to help, perhaps by holding special 'patriotic theme' fund raising events."

Esther V. Rosenberg, Director, National Grass Roots Campaign, The Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., was on hand at the convention in Hollywood to help to get the project started. She spoke at a luncheon held by the NFCA Presidents' Section on Monday, October 1.

Another featured speaker at the convention was Douglas Kiker, David Janak NBC's national affairs correspondent, Washington, D.C. Mr. Kiker talked on the subject, "What the Future Holds -- A View David Janak has recently been from Washington," at the closing appointed as a Sales Representative Plenary Session Wednesday for Lodge No. 130 in Dallas. Section to "Communications Section." This change was made because it was felt that the role of public relations in fraternal societies had expanded to cover a number of additional fields including such things as advertising, audio-visual productions and video.

Highlighting the banquet was the presentation of the first national Fraternal Family Award given by the National Fraternal Congress.

The recipient was Mr. Harold Nunes of Jacksonville, Illinois.

Nunes was honored in recognition of his volunteer work with United Commercial Travelers of America, a fraternal benefit society headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. A 70 yearold retired food market manager, Nunes was cited for his leadership in spearheading a coalition of organizations to form the Jacksonville Community Food Center which handles the distribution of food for the Morgan County Welfare Center. The program serves more than 3,300 people each year.

During the award presentation, Nunes was commended by Gloria Bergh, NFCA Fraternal Family Award committee chairman, for his fraternal spirit and community involvement.

"Harold Nunes has helped to unite his local fraternal group with other groups to serve a very real human need in their community. He has made fraternalism come alive," Bergh said.

At the opening Plenary Session at 9:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, greetings were extended by Hollywood Mayor David Keating, President James R. Widdecombe of the Canadian Fraternal Association, and President William F. Schweiker, of the Florida State Fraternal Congress. In addition to the Presidents' Section meeting at noon on Monday, luncheons were held by the Investment, Press and Public Relations, State Fraternal Congresses and Actuaries' Sections.

Managing Director A. Michael Frinquelli, of Salomon Brothers, Inc., New York City, spoke at the Investment Section meeting.

Addressing those at the Press and Public Relations Section Luncheon was Michael Putney, Senior Correspondent of Television Station WTVJ, Miami. In his talk entitled "The Future of Television News," he expressed the belief that cable news services would not replace the national network news services such as those provided by NBC and CBS. The State Fraternal Congresses' Section had a panel discussion entitled "Working Together." Those serving on the panel were Warren A. Ranz, Vice President of Insurance Operations for Catholic Family Life Insurance; James Bridges, Assistant Vice President for Field Operations, Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society; and R. Robert Grenier, Second Vice President, Union Saint-Jean-Baptiste.

The Actuaries' Section heard a talk — "Positioned for Progress" -by Robert E. Reuter, Senior Vice President and Manager, Insurance Company Services Division, Booke and Company, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

A General Session of the convention took place at 2:15 p.m., Monday afternoon. NFCA Fraternal Counsel Harriett L. Robison presented the topic, "You Have to

Believe to Achieve," for a panel discussion in which members of the NFCA Fraternal Advisory Council participated. They are George T. Zifchak, Vice President, Sales, Greek Catholic Union of the USA; Warren A. Ranz, Vice President, Insurance Operations, Catholic Family Life Insurance; Ethan L. Allen, Vice President, Fraternal Activities, Independent Order of Foresters; Harvey G. Bacque, Director of Service, Knights of Columbus; and John L. Dutton, Second Vice President, Branch Operations, Aid Association for Lutherans.

A second portion of the Monday afternoon program featured members of the Modern Woodmen of America. They were President William B. Foster, who spoke on the "Goals of Modern Woodmen of America;" Agency Manager Roger Wiles, who talked on "Recruiting Fraternal Agents;" District Manager Mark Pody, who discussed the "Advantages of Being a Fraternal Life Insurance Agent;" Camp Secretary Connie Marmaro, who talked on Community Involvement; Teen Advisor Linda Westergaard, who spoke on the subject, "Volunteer and Be Happy," and Junior Member Lanelle Britton, who told "What it Means to me to Belong to a Modern Woodmen of America Junior Service Club." Mary C. Reddick, National President of the Degree of Honor Protective Association, was the session chairman.

Tuesday morning, October 2, another General Session was held. It opened with a panel discussion on the subject, "The Whole is Greater than the Sum of Its Parts."

Representing the Lutheran Brotherhood on the panel were Pamela Desnick, Assistant Vice President-Marketing, and Kent E. Eklund, Vice President for Fraternal Affairs. Participants from National Mutual Benefit were Agency Vice President Donald R. Amacher and Fraternal Director Sue Adler. The Sons of Norway were represented by Daniel G. Anderson, General Manager for Fraternal Insurance Sales, and Paul Erickson, General Manager, Fraternal and Public Relations.

Joseph W. Arndt, Director of Agencies, Modern Woodmen of America, was session chairman.

Following the discussion, David C. Huxford, President of the Advanced Planners Users Group of Vienna, Virginia, spoke on using computers to improve communications.

At Tuesday noon, luncheon meetings were held by the Fraternal, Law, Medical, Secretaries' and Field Managers' Sections. Phil San Filippo, Chairman of the Communications Committee of the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Chamber of Commerce, addressed the Fraternal Section on the subject "Community Involvement: Is it just Charity, or is it Good Business."

"Sex Discrimination in Insurance" was the subject of a talk presented at the Law Section by Jack H. Blaine, Washington, D.C., Chief Counsel, State, American Council of Life Insurance.

4/VtSTNIK—Wednesday, October 24, 1984 Secretaries' Section Luncheon featured a slide show on the 100th anniversary of the Modern Woodmen of America while the Field Managers heard a talk on the "Importance of Continuing Education" by Mick Owens, General Agent of the Indianapolis Life Insurance Company.

The third General Session took place Tuesday afternoon. At that time, a panel presented a "Personal Wellness Update" with emphasis on the well-being of employees and members and their families. The panelists were William A. Selle, Second Vice President, Fraternal Benefit Administration, Aid Association for Lutherans; C. Clyde Anderson, Medical Director, Modern Woodmen of America; and Ann Raber, Wellness Director, Mennonite Mutual Aid Association.

The session Chairman was Robert E. Breseman, Vice President, Insurance Services, Concordia Mutual Aid Association. Following the discussion, a talk was given by Bjorn Secher, Fort Lauderdale, of B. Secher Associates. Mr. Secher's talk was entitled "That Winning Attitude in Action; For A Longer, Healthier and Happier Life."

The final Plenary Session Wednesday morning featured the election and installation of NFCA officers along with Mr. Kiker's address. The officers, in addition to President Peter Daly (Executive Vice President, Independent Order of Foresters), and Vice President William B. Foster (President, Modern Woodmen of America), are Immediate Past President Virginia E. Farmer (National President, North American Benefit Association), Executive Vice President Raymond A. Klee, Secretary-Treasurer Jonni L. Dempsey, and Directors Frank Dick (President and Secretary, Gleaner Life Insurance Society); Louis B. Engelke (Grand President, Order of the Sons of Hermann in the State of Texas); William R. Heerman (Sr. Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel, Aid Association for Lutherans); C. Robert Muck (National Secretary, Workmen's Benefit Fund of the USA); Mary C. Reddick (National President, Degree of Honor Protective Association); Erwin N. (Continued from page 1) meeting. Colors were presented by District Flag Bearer Jeffrey Barcak and Lodge 88 Flag Bearer Vincent Hegwood, who led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Helen Hegwood, accompanied by Naomi Spencer, gave beautiful renditions of "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde Domov Muj".

Lodge 88 President Jerome Ermis gave a warm welcome. District 1st V.P. Jerry Prochazka thanked Lodge 88 for hosting this day. He stat gd that President Helmcamp had worked so hard on this program and thanked her for it.

President Helmcamp gave special thanks to the Choral Club, under the direction of Tim Kostom, and the Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Rudy Dybala. She expressed her appreciation to Janet Raymond who took care of registration. She thanked Food Chairman Annie Vala and her helpers, stating that Annie had donated tea and sugar while her daughter, Frances, had donated coffee. Anne's helpers were Alvin Raymond, Evelyn and Milert Antrich, Georgia Barcak, Evelyn Vojt, Lowrina Lindemann, and Millie Manack. Sister Helmcamp also thanked Tommy Lostak for purchasing and bringing the meat to Lodge 88 on Saturday, Louis Hanus for getting bread, Tim Kostom for helping set up the stage, and Lillie Spies for taking care of the pastry.

President Risinger of Pasadena Lodge 172 offered to host the district spring meeting in March.

His offer was accepted.

Lodge 88 President Jerome Ermis presented scholarships from the Supreme Lodge to Vivian Hegwood, Jeanne Mlcak, and Miriam Krpec.

Recipients not present were Sharon Budnick, Melissa Fowler, and Rebecca Miksch.

Stating that this is the last time the district members would get together this year, President Helmcamp said, "This would be an appropriate time to honor a member who has done much for our SPJST and our district." She requested that Sister Evelyn Vornsand escort District Director Louis Hanus to the podium. She then requested that Brother Gus Urbanovsky escort Sister Oleta Hanus saying, "Behind a good director is a good lady and what a lady she is."

The president continued with "District Director Louis Hanus, you have done an excellent job for 8 years. You attended meetings and activities of the various lodges and you were ready to help them at any time. At the Supreme Lodge you took care of our district. Throughout it all you represented us well and with dignity. You can reflect on these years with pride for you know, as we all know, that you have done a great job. I salute you, Director Hanus, and want to present this token of our appreciation." She gave the director a beautiful desk set with the inscription, "SPJST Director Louis Hanus — 8 Years of Dedicated Service".

Stating that we also want to honor Sister Oleta for her splendid cooperation and encouragement that helped Louis so much, the president informed Secretary Viola Cox that she would have the honor of pinning on a corsage.

President Helmcamp stated that there was another member to be recognized, but Sister Frances Olexa was in Beaumont celebrating her 85th birthday with her family.

The president expressed thanks to Rosa Lee Kostom, Mary Ann Kieschnick, and Mary Tilich, who were in charge of displays, and Mickey Rice, Evelyn and Bill Vornsand, for helping set them up.

She also thanked the assistants from various lodges for getting entries. In the needlepoint, crochet, embroidery display, ribbons were presented to (1) Naomi Spencer, (2) Rosa Lee Kostom, (3) Mickey Rice. In the dolls, pillows, knitted items display, winners were (1) Emilia Sebek, (2) Emilia Sebek and Ora Faye Wilson, (3) Mary Schenburn. In the leather and woodcarving display, winners were (1) Frank Sebek, (2) Frank Tilich, (3) Christine Janak. Judges Bernice Kelly, Elsie Angele, and Thelma Field were introduced and commended for a very difficult job.

We have a problem in our department that I hope you can help us solve. We need some old men and lady mannequins. They can be in any condition I can repair just about anything that may require rebuilding. We have a snow white band uniform that sure would renew our band display. We also have an Army uniform that was worn in the last war and wounded three times.

In the ladies' department, we have two beautiful brides' outfits of the early 1900's that need to be shown.

Where to ask, call on the large department stores in your cities and ask for the display man; tell him that the mannequins will be a standing advertisement for his store; tell him we have had visitors from 47 states of the union and 16 foreign countries and that we enter each donor on our GOLDEN BOOK which is examinedr,

5. A comical skit — "The Proposal" with Millie Matlack and Arnold Spencer. (This was also written by Tillie Helmcamp.)

Bennie Kocich and Ernest Anders, who were in charge of the drawing in the Choral Club and Concert Orchestra drawing, gave prizes to the lucky winners.

President Helmcamp concluded the program with thanks to all participants in the program and to all who came.

Our LAM Department is growing in both Library and Museum. We have just received a nice shipment of books from Mr. Louis Spacil Library in Duluth, Minn. and:a very nice donation of an old, old lawnmower and bicycle and lots of unusual tools from Mr. and Mrs. Jake G. Skinner of Tyler, which will enhance several areas of our museum. Come see them, the ADMISSION IS FREE and, don't forget to tell your friends.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Activities

Dear Members: We finally had a good rain and everything sure does look good. We had a good turnout at our regular monthly meeting. Everyone was enjoying the rain.

President Ann Balusek called the meeting to order by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

She then welcomed our guests, Lillie Zajicek, Ruby Cernosek, Dan Balusek and Thomas Harwell. We enjoyed having all of you, please come, again.

Roll call showed all officers present. The minutes, committees' and officers' reports were approved as read.

Jennifer Zajicek and Lad Stalmach were reported on the sick list; we hope and pray that both of you are feeling better by now.

The club voted to build a bookcase to keep all the club records in it. Dan Balusek will build it for us.

Every Tuesday is Bingo night at Buckholts Hall, at 7:30 p.m.

Everyone is welcome. Beginning soon we will have an extra special game.

We will have another dance October 28 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Everyone is invited to attend; door prizes will be given. We have a good time so be sure and come join us.

After the meeting was adjourned, all of us enjoyed a fried chicken with all the trimmings supper. It really was good so you see what you are missing by not coming to the meetings.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Dan Balusek. Sister Ann and Brother Dan Balusek will be celebrating their wedding anniversary, October 14th. We wish them a happy day.

Presentation Highlight — Vickie Nors of Lodge 66 is receiving a $500 SPJST Scholarship from local Lodge 66 President Johnnie Gaidusek on behalf of the SPJST Society.

Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir is bringing greetings to the assembly at the Linden Hall in Elm Mott during their 78th anniversary held September 16th.

Brother Kacir brought with him a 1915 banner pertaining to the Cotton Palace held in Waco, which is on display at the LAM Dept. in Temple.

These sisters do a wonderful job.

Sunshine reporter Sister Mary Kosut was not present because she and her husband John were in Hawaii. We know they will have a lot to talk about when they return.

Sister Stella Bukowski is still in the hospital. The Birthday Club Sisters made a contribution to the ALS and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society of America in honor of a Birthday Club Sister Emily Bily who has contacted this disease. If anyone wants to make a donation to this society contact Sister Pearl Hanka who has the forms. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Bingo workers for October were Sisters Martha Baxter and Doris Knapick. November workers will be Mary Schenburn and Inez Jeans.

October 28 will be Czech Day at Lodge 88 and the president asked all the sisters to help with the pastry.

Dear Members and Guests: Thursday night, October 11 at 8 p.m., President Harold Bergmann called the regular monthly meeting to order with a nice attendance. He also led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jeanette Schoenst read the • minutes of the previous meeting and handed out the refund checks to those who were present; the remainder of the checks will be mailed to the recipients by Brother Peters, he also gave the mortuary standing. Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. All readings were accepted as given.

Brother Beard gave a favorable report on the previous Variety Shoot.

Then President Bergmann thanked the Working Committee and they were also given a round of applause for a job well done.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Kasse were warmly accepted into our lodge by transfer from Lodge 68, Nelsonville.

Brother Leonhardt, a birthday celebrant and Brother and Sister Kasse in appreciation of membership into our lodge, shared in providing refreshments for our group after the meeting.

_ Victoria Czech Day

The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society held a reception for the members of the Black Light Theatre of Prague, Czechoslovakia September 20. The group performed in Victoria, Texas at the opening of the Victoria Fine Arts Association season. Our society is grateful for being given the opportunity to hold the reception by the Victoria Fine Arts Association.

September 20 was also proclaimed Czech Day by Mayor Ted Reed.

Many merchants sponsored spots on a local radio station and polkas were played throughout the day. Ten 20second segments were run during the day informing the public of our Czech heritage, customs and traditions. Czech sausages and kolache were given out by the radio station on that day.

Our president, Joe D. Janak, Jr. and our Vice-President, Marjorie Matula, appeared on a local TV station and talked about Czech heritage during the half hour program. The public library had a Czech display. The newspaper printed Czech recipes and at least five articles on the Czech people, their heritage and their families.

The Czech Singers of Victoria performed at two local shopping malls. The Opera House Restaurant bad the VVence Shimek Orchestra playing during an evening dinner which featured Czech food. The restaurant also has made several bookings with other Czech orchestras for the coming months.

Numerous compliments were received by the Victoria County

Czech Heritage Society from local Czechs who really enjoyed and supported the activities. As a result, the residents of Victoria County will be seeing and hearing more of our Czech heritage in the months to come.

Letter to the Editor October 14, 1984 Mr. R. J. Sefcik Editor Vestnik P.O. Box 85 West, Texas 76691 Dear Rudy: I hope all of your readers are aware by now of the great honor bestowed Thursday, October 11 upon Czechoslovak poet Jaroslav Seifert when he was awarded the 1984 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is the first Czech recipient.

Please see if you can obtain some of his works for publication in the Czech section of the Vestnik. I understand that his most recent work is a memoir titled, Vsecky Krasy Sveta (All the Beauty in the World).

The poet was a prominent figure during the "Prague Spring" in 1968, a brief period of liberalization that saw a flowering of the arts, literature and film. But his works were banned after he condemned the August 21, 1968 Soviet invasion that crushed the Czech liberalization, telling the nation in a broadcast, "We do not want to live in bondage and therefore we shall not live in bondage."

In one of his works from the 1970s, Seifert compares poetry to love, hunger, plague and war' one of those things "with us from the start." He apologizes for verses that may have been "embarrassingly foolish," then goes on: But I make no excuse.

I believe that seeking beautiful words is better than killing and murdering.

Seifert made his literary debut in 1920 with a volume of poetry called Mesto v Slzach (City in Tears). The following is an English translation of one of his poems currently being circulated in Prague.

Whenever I gaze out on Prague, and I do so constantly and always with bated breath because I love her, I tune my mind to God wherever he may be, beyond the starry mists or just behind that moth eaten screen, to thank him for, granting that magnfcent ii setting i for me to live in To me and to my joys rand carefree loves.

To me and to my tears without weeping when a love's departed.

And to my more than bitter grief when even my verses could not weep.

I love her fire-charred walls to which we clung during the War so as to hold out.

I would not change them for anything in the world.

Not even for others.

Not even if the Eiffel Tower rose between them and the Seine flowed sadly past.

Not even for all the Gardens of Paradise full of flowers.

When I shall die, and this will be quite soon, I shall carry on my heart the city's destiny And listlessly, just as Marceus.

Let anyone be flayed alive who lays hands on, this City no matter who he is, no matter how sweetly, he plays on his flute.

The above is a portion of a long poem by Seifert, who is in very ill health in a Prague hospital. He is 83 years old.

As you see, the message is beautiful, even when translated into English, but it would be so much more stirring if you could print it and any other of his works in his native Czech.

I am sure that many of the residents of our nursing homes would enjoy a copy of his works too.

We would like to add it to the reading material in the library of the Czech Catholic Home for Aged in Hillje. Speaking of the home, may I invite SPJST Brothers and Sisters to attend the 30th Birthday Party of the home Sunday, November 4 at the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Hall.

Nobel Prize in Literature Goes To Outspoken Czech Writer STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Czechoslovak writer Jaroslav Seifert, whose lyric lines of love and hope were long' oni censored by his country's Communist government, was awarded the 1984 Nobel Prize in literature Thursday.

-The ailing, 83-year-old poet is the first writer working in the East bloc to win the literature award since the Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn in 1970.

The Swedish Academy of Letters, announcing the prize, said Seifert's fresh, sensual poetry "provides a liberating image of the indomitable spirit and versatility of man." The news agency of the Czechoslovak government, which recently has made its peace with Seifert, lauded his "positive attitude to man's,struggle for,socia/ justice."

8/VESTNfK—Wednesday, October 24, 1984 In Prague, the Swedish ambassador called on Seifert in his hospital room to inform him of the prize.

"He was overjoyed . . . I don't think he was expecting it," said the diplomat, Olof Skoglund.

Seifert, suffering from a heart ailment and diabetes, is not expected to be able to accept the prize personally at the awards ceremony Dec. 10 in Stockholm.

Skoglund said a family member would probably take his place.

The award series was established in the will of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite who died in 1896.

Seifert, born in a working class district in Prague on Sept. 23, 1901, made his debut in 1920 with a volume of poetry called Mesto v Slzach (City in Tears).

CYCLONE YOUTH CLUB PLANS HALLOWEEN PARTY Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 24 Youth Club was held Tuesday, October 9, 1984. President Christy Marek called the meeting to order. *** Brandi Gotcher and Melanie Zavodny led us in the Pledge of YOUTH SECTION Allegiance.

Secretary Kim Schneider called the roll; 22 members and 2 visitors were present. The visitors were Chris and Kenny McNeill.

YOUTH ACTIVITY After Treasurer Janet Macek CALENDAR gave her report, we went into old Nov. 3—District Youth Counselors' business.

Meeting, Home Office Under old business we are still Mar. 23-24, 1985—Statewide Youth selling Christmas ornaments, teddy Leaders' Retreat, Camp Lone Star, bears, thermometers, etc.

Miss Becki Skrabanek Weds Mr. Chris T. Snow In a candlelight ceremony, Miss Becki Lynn Skrabanek became the bride of Mr. Christopher Temple Snow, Saturday, October 6 at 3 p.m. at Northwest Bible Church in Dallas.

The Rev. Dennis Eenigenburg performed the double-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and. Mrs. Henry J. Skrabanek of Dallas. The groom is the son of Mrs. Dawn Snow of Dallas, and the late Harold P. Snow.

The bride was given in marriage by her father. She wore a gown designed by Mori Lee, with shoulder bearing scoop neckline, victorian sleeves, fitted bodice, designed with French Alcencon lace and clusters of pearls, and a basque waistline. The skirt was semi-full and had a scalloped flowing chapel length train with an all laced edge. The House of Bianchi designed the circular headpiece of white French Alencon lace medallions and pearls with paufs of nylon illusion, interspersed with lace medallions and pearls. The headpiece had a blusher and streamers were chapel length.

She carried the traditional something old, which was a handkerchief given to her by the Groom's Grandmother, Mrs. Rob Roy MacGregor of Corsicana. Mrs. MacGregor had carried the handkerchief in her wedding in 1933 as well as the Groom's great-great-grandmother in 1895.

For something new, the bride wore a pearl bracelet and pearl earrings, gifts of the bridegroom, and a single strand of pearls, gift of her father. The bride wore a borrowed bustle petticoat from a long-time family friend and a garter of blue. She had a six-pence in her shoe.

A flowing cascade of Sonja roses, stephanotis and baby's breath was the bride's bouquet.

Miss Carol Skrabanek, sister of the bride, was maid-of-honor, and bridesmaids included Miss Kim Skrabanek, cousin of the bride, of San Antonio, Mrs. Ann Sweeney and Mrs. Lillian Jones of Dallas, and Mrs. Julie Burleson of Houston. The girls wore ankle length teal satin gowns and carried arm bouquets of peach roses, peach gladiolus, baby's breath and fern.

Mrs. Jackie Schroeder, cousin of the bride, of Pasadena, was the soloist, accompanied by Mr. Glynn Sloan, of Dallas, at the piano and organ. She sang "Longer Than", "Because" and "The Lord's Prayer".

Mr. Doug Snow served as his brother's best man, and the groomsmen were Mr. Michael Lindberg, Mr. Mike Chitwood, Mr. Grant Sanders, Mr. David Prigmore, and Mr. Stan Taylor, all of Dallas.

Ushers included Phillip Skrabanek, Arron Turner, Brion Green all of Dallas and Mr. Brad Churchill of Plainview.

Kudrna-Buie Exchange Wedding Vows Miss Karen Sue Kudrna and Robert William Buie exchanged wedding vows in a double ring ceremony September 29th in the First United. Methodist Church in Ennis. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Louis Kudrna of Ennis. The groom is the son of Mrs. William C. Buie of Dallas.

The reception, which was held at the SPJST Lodge 25 in Ennis, consisted of a traditional dinner and dance. After a trip to the Bahamas, the couple will reside in Arlington.

Karen and her parents are members of Lodge 25, Ennis.

Mr. Phillip Skrabanek, brother of the bride and Mr. Arron Turner, cousin of the groom, of Corsicana, served as candlelighters.

Miss Kris Skrabanek, cousin of the bride, of Waco, presided at the bride's book.

Following the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Skrabanek, Carol and Phillip, hosted a buffet reception at the DAC Country Club. Members of the House Party included Mrs. Janet Harkey, Miss Elaine Robertson, Miss Shannon Turner and Miss Devora Turner.

Mrs. Dawn Snow, mother of the groom, hosted the rehearsal dinner on Friday evening at the DAC Country Club.

The bride and groom are both graduates of Lake Highlands High School in Richardson and Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Mrs. Snow is employed by WynneJackson Management Company of the Plaza of the Americas and Mr. Snow is employed by General Homes as a Project Supervisor in Allen, Texas.

After a honeymoon in St. Thomas, The Virgin Islands, the couple will reside at Route 3, Farmersville, Texas.

Mrs. Snow, as well as her family have been active members of Lodge 130 in Dallas for many years.

I3feciava district in pre-historic times Bteclava county is located in the southeastern corner of Moravia with natural borders in the south by the river Dyje and in the east by river Morava. Its flat countryside changes in the north around HustopeZe into gentle hills. In the wide valley of Dyje, not far from its confluence with the Morava river are the towering Pavlovske Vrchy (Hills) with high calcium content, which since prehistoric times had a very important role in the history of southern Moravia. As an SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston members visited West to hear Budvarka from outstanding orientation and observation point close to the famed eeske Budejovice Czechoslovakia. amber trail, these hills became a hub of the ancient settlements in the early Stone Age. The archaeologic explorations of these settlements close to Dolni Vestonice and Pavlov brought, besides the world wide known Vestonices Venus, plenty of discoveries to acquaint us with the way of life of the pre-historic mammoth hunters. The settlements of that time were not only on the slopes of sunny Pavlov's hills because the similar finds of arms, tools and remains of camps and communities were discovered in other parts of Bfeclava county. The very suitable soil and climate brought the settlers here in the late Stone Age too. Although this area does not have any natural resources, besides the pottery clay, the settlements here flourished due to the advanced agriculture in the following Bronze and Iron Age. Many metal objects, namely tools and jewelry, found in the excavated communities, their cemeteries and storage places, prove the extensive trade with the distant lands. This could only be possible because of the progressive agriculture of Weelava district. This also was a cause of the continuous settlement here by the The 1 soloists with the Budvarka Orchestra. different races or tribes and this is why this part of Moravia was constantly influenced by the prehistoric cultures. During the 5th century and 6th century the first Slavic tribes arrived and pushed out the previous inhabitants.

The biggest cemetery of ancient western Sla ys found to this date was discovered at Ptitluky in Bteclava county. There are about a hundred monuments containing more than 400 skeletons in this graveyard which was used from the 5th to 7th century. Other old Slavic cemeteries were excavated in five different localities of the county.

In contrast to other pre-historic tribes or races living here temporarily, Sla ys settled in Bteclava district permanently.

Here, along Morava and Dyje rivers was a cradle of the first state of western Slays. This state was born Budvarka Orchestra members serenaded the audience by forming a circle n in the 9th century and was called by Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII center of hall. --

Porphyrogenitus (913-959) as Great Moravia. Bteclava district as a central part of this state was fortified by a chain of castles, such as Pohansko close to the present city of Bteclava, Petrova Louka at Strachotin or Pohansko at Nejdek.

These castles, built as the impregnable fortresses, were not only seats of local government and religious centres, but also accommodated trade and craftsmanship.

There is no doubt about the high cultural standard as corroborated by the written documents and excavated archaeological finds. Sets of cleverly made tools and artistic jewelry discovered in the graves or in the remains of settlements document that Slavic craftsmen and artists accepted Byzantine and west European influence and reworked them to their own taste. This accomplished a new precious Slavic culture readily recognized in all the scientific world today and the complete set of jewelry of Great Moravia is catalogued in the World Science Almanac as "The Jewels of Moravia." The advanced civilization of old Slays is also provied by their other highly developed crafts and by the overall class structure progress in their feudal society. The traces for these conclusions are located in the excavated graveyards in the countryside or around the churches in the castles.

The destruction of the Great Moravian empire did not stop the progress of the society in its former territory. Not only-the castles at Strachotin and Nejdek were used afterwards, but also life in the countryside shows continuity proven by the finds from this era of darkness — to the 11th and 12th century. The proof of direct occupation by Hungarians, the wild Asiatic horde which destroyed peaceful Great Moravia, or by Germans, was never established. It is though a historical fact that Weelava county and the whole of Moravia was incorporated into the Duchy of Bohemia at the beginning of the 11th century. When at a later date Duke Btetislav of Bohemia was forced to cease in the armistice of ilezno (present Regensburg in Bavaria) to Henry III of Germany, the old Slavic territory between the Danube and Dyje rivers, — located there is the famous Moravian Plain, known through history and up to this time by its rightful name — he built a new line of fortified points alongside the Dyje river. The remains of one of them is to this day at Dolni Vestoniee and preserved records mention others located in Mikulov, Podivin, Bteclava etc. At that time the fortress of Bfeclava became a pivot point in the defense line and a seat of the religious administration. This reorganization of Bkeclava county in Wtetislav's state was of lasting character because many new communities were founded in this area in the 11th and 12th century. This is corroborated for example in the written document of Bishop Jindtich Zdik from 1131 and by countless archaeological discoveries from that era of south Moravia's history. Some of these finds point back even to the continuity with Great Moravia.

During the 13th century when colonization from outside took place in the border areas, both, ecclesiastic and secular, feudal Lords in Bteclava district brought German

Wednesday, October 24, 1984--VESTNiK/11 settlers here. In some instances these new numerous foreign farmers got the upper hand in the localities close to the borders and this fact influenced the progress of the land at Austria's border according to most recent history.

The descendants of the original settlers never wanted to be true citizens of the host country, on the contrary, they professed strong German nationalistic feelings with the goal in their minds to annex the territory where they now lived, to the country of their forefathers.

This outrageous behavior of theirs was used by some German historians to color the history of Czechoslovak border districts to their liking.

To point out some of these falsification efforts, let us bring to light the theory of these so called historians claiming that Bteclava was founded by Germans from lower Austria as proven in the document of German ruler Henry III, head of the Holy Roman German Empire.

They built their claini on the German name of Bteclava — Lauentenburch, conveniently forgetting the fact that this so called German name of Bteclava originated from the old Slavic tribe named Lovetici, which lived in Bfeclava county, and from their main town, called Lovetingrad. All of the archaeological excavations from the 11th, 12th and 13th century are without any so called colonization influence; on the contrary, the material and decoration of the pottery and ceramics show the continuity of the ancient Slavic craftsmanship and culture. Because of its riches and suitable position, Bteclava's area was often in the prehistoric era, the goal of attacks from many enemies; from the 5th century though it is forever Slavic territory.

Here is where Great Moravia, the first state of western Sla y s, was founded and here BFetislav had his first line of defenses erected when this Slavic land became the permanent part of the Kingdom of Bohemia after the collapse of the Great Moravian Empire.

Less than 3 kilometers from the present city of Bfeclava, close to the confluence of Dyje and Morava rivers, in the middle of the forest near the Austrian borders, is located a large fortified settlement Pohansko. The visitors are not only surprised by the huge size of this excavated settlement, but also by the scenic beauty of centuries old giant oak trees. Their stateliness and majestic splendor creates a suitable background for anyone seeking an inside look at the ancient Slays. In the northwestern section of this excavated area are the Palisades, the church with the cemetery and Duke's residence. The archeologists explored 406 graves around the church and found most of them opened and pillaged at an unknown time in the foregone centuries. Nevertheless the articles now discovered point to the great riches of the Dukes and their courts residing here. Silver and gold jewelry such as rings, earrings, necklaces or buttons were found in the women's graves, arms and spurs in the mens' graves of the Dukes' retinues.

All of this priceless treasure from Pohansko is now located at the Hunting Chateau close by.

"from the activities of the Czechoslovak archaelogists" and "the archaeologic discoveries in Czechoslovakia" printed by the Editor Rudy J. gefMk in the Czech section in. SPJST Vestnik (Oct. 3rd this year) gave the Czech reading membership a nice inside view into the ancient history of the old country. I hope that today's article entitled "Bfeclava district in the pre-historic times," translated by me some time ago from Czech to English would bring forth the same result to the rest of our membership.

A Living Tribute to Dr. Miroslav Tyrg The Czech immigrants, who fled before the merciless flood of bloody persecution after the • revolutionary days of 1848, leaving their native homes to find shelter in the peaceful haven smiling `neath the flaring folds of the Stars and Stripes; and like a richly laden ship reaching a port with all its wealth intact, brought to America not only their ardent love of liberty but also the Sokol ideology of Dr. Miroslav Tyrs. His teachings had instilled in their minds, that physical education means not only physical but also mental and moral ele, vation of mankind.

Resolving to make their new home resemble those they had left behind, including the language, customs and rich culture, they followed the words of wisdom spoken by Dr. Miroslav Tyrs and by 1865, the first Sokol Organization was founded in America located in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Sokol ideology spread to every major Czech settlement throughout the United States and by 1878 there were many independent Sokol units. Thirteen of them banded together to create the National Sokol Unity. This enabled them to disseminate the teachings of Dr. Miroslav Tyrs to all of their Sokol members.

The Sokol Organization was one of the first in the United States to proclaim the equality of both men and women. To demonstrate their strong feelings of loyalty to their adopted homeland an article in their original Constitution and By-Laws stated that every member must become a citizen of the United States. At all of their cultural events they proudly displayed the flag of the United States along with the flag of their homeland and sang both anthems.

The National Sokol Unity agreed to follow all the teaching of Dr. Miroslav Tyrs who was made an honorary member.

During the September 1884 Slet and competitions, held in Chicago, Illinois, news was received that the founder of Sokol had been reported missing while vacationing in the Tyrol Mountains at Oetz. A feeling of sorrow and resignation followed, with most of those present believing the organization would flounder with his loss. But soon an overwhelming desire took place which was to continue the ideology and plans of Dr. Tyrs and carry the banner to new heights.

As the Czech people continued to come to America, they found that they were welcome by the Sokols.

Many had previous training in the Sokol system, therefore it was natural for them to become instructors and leaders in the National Sokol Unity. Using the Czech language along with preserving the customs and the cultural activities kept alive in the Sokol organization, enabled them to maintain the ties to their homeland.

How deeply the teachings of Dr. Miroslav Tyrs were instilled in the hearts of the Sokol members was demonstrated by the fact that in the memorable days of 1914-1918, when the First World War broke out in Europe, and long before America entered the war and President Wilson called for volunteers, the Sokol gymnasium emptied of young men as they hastened to join in the struggle for justice, liberty and humanity. The men and women who stayed behind kept the gymnasiums open and raised funds, collected food, clothing and medicines for the war effort.

In 1918 the time had come for the teachings of Dr. Tyrs to be truly tested. The realization of his efforts arrived with an independent and democratic Czechoslovakia as a truly healthy and energetic nation.

In 1917 the two Czech Sokol Organizations in the United States, the National Sokol Unity and Zupa Fuegner Tyrs, merged and became the American Sokol Organization.

The American Sokol Organization continued to flourish in America and from 1920-1940 there were 115 Sokol units with a membership of 11,800. The American Sokols participated in all but two Sokol Slets and competitions held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, those being the first and the last. The Czech Sokols were guests of the American Sokol Organization at our Slets on four occasions, the last one in 1947.

During the Second World War the American Sokol Organization once again mobilized their members and cooperated fully with the Czechoslovak National Council in helping to achieve independence and freedom fo- Czechoslovakia.

We have developed an excellent relationship with our brother/ sister Sokols Abroad and have partici pated in their Slets in Vienna, Austria; Zurich, Switzerland and Montreal, Canada. It was on the occasion of the 1962 Slet that the American Sokol Organization erected a plaque, in Oetz, on the site where the body of Dr. Miroslav Tyrs was found.

On the occasion of our XV American Sokol Slet, in 1981 at Fort Worth, Texas, we had a mold made of Professor J. U. Pekarek's bust of Dr. Miroslav Tyrs.

To date several of our units and individual members have purchased this excellent bronze bust of the Sokol Founder.

12/VtSTMK—Wednesday, October 24, 1984 The American Sokols continue to conduct National Slets every four years, District Slets annually, and Instructors Schools conducted on the same basis. In all we continue to follow the Tyrs system of gymnastics and theory. All of the Czech terminology has been translated into English. We are now almost entirely second and third generation Czech-Americans who proudly and independently support and maintain our own Sokol units and continue to follow the Sokol flag.

We are now making preparations for the XVI American Sokol Slet in 1985 when we will celebrate the 120th year of continuous Sokol activity in the United States.

We are grateful to Dr. Miroslav Tyrs for giving us the Sokol ideology and are proud of our 119 continuous years of Sokol activity and tradition. He would be proud of the American Sokol Organization, an organization he never had the privilege to see.

We, the members of the American Sokol Organization, are determined that the Sokol movement will continue to benefit the generations that will follow.

We pause to pay tribute and show our gratitude to Dr. Miroslav Tyrs whose teachings have so deeply affected our lives.

Brother Jurcik was born January 24, 1903 in Malenovice in the Moravian section of Czechoslovakia.

The Jurcik Family settled in Ennis, Texas and had a cotton farm.

In 1916 Brother Jurcik moved to Dallas and went to work for Potter Art Iron Studio as a metalsmith; he also invented several items that aided in the war efforts during World War II. July 4, 1927 he married the former Willie Gerlich and from this union a daughter, Frances, was born. In the late 1960s Willie Jurcik passed away following a lengthy illness.

February 14, 1973 Brother Jurcik married Vlasta Prevratil Maca.

Together they traveled twice to Czechoslovakia to visit families and to see his boyhood home.

Brother Jurcik had been a loyal member of Lodge 130 having served as president and always willing to give of himself to help the SPJST grow. He was also very active in Sokol Zizka where he held offices on the executive boards. He was vice president of SVPS Chapter No. 5.

Services were held at CraneWerland Chapel with Dr. Charles A. Taylor and George Prevratil officiating. Burial was at Grove Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Vlasta Jurcik; daughter, Frances Jurcik; stepchildren, Jerry, Ben and Jo Anne Maca, all of Dallas; granddaughter, Robin Sue Maca of Austin; grandson, Josef Maca of Dallas; five sisters; four brothers; numerous nieces and nephews.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

SCHOLARSHIP Program For SPJST Members

following the announcement of the scholarship award. They must attend college on a full-time basis and carry a normal academic load without interruption and in accordance with the college calendar. They must maintain academic and personal standards satisfactory to the college and to the Committee.

College Entrance Examination Board. Arrangements to take the S.A.T. or A.C.T. test should be made with their local high school.

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP Four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. The certificate must be a permanent plan of insurance in the face amount of $5,000 or more. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

Each year a member may apply whether they have been a previous recipient or not.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Applicants who are high school seniors must take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) or the American College Test (A.C.T.) given by the

Criteria for selecting scholarship winners from among high school seniors include: • Results of the S.A.T. and/or A.C.T. • High school records • References and recommendations • The Committee's judgment of the applicant's potential • SPJST involvement

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

Exact due dates and requirements for both the freshman and undergraduate programs will be furnished the member after they have sent in the initial application prior to December 31.

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them at any time as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE

The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner,

Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

Funds covering scholarship awards are remitted direct to the college the recipient is to attend, after proof of enrollment is received by the Supreme Lodge. Any unused funds will be returned to the Supreme Lodge.
