Considering a change in life insurance to keep up with inflation or a growing family? If so, what kind of policy should you buy, and how much should you spend for it? These tips may help: UPDATING YOUR POLICY. All life-insurance policies are variations of three basic types—term, wholelife and endowment insurance.

Term. As the name implies, term policies insure for a specific period of time — usually 1, 5, 10 or 20 years, or up to age 65. They pay only if you die during the period covered. They are cheaper to start with than other types of policies for the same dollar amount of coverage. But premiums increase as you grow older. Some companies do not require medical examinations.

Whole life. This kind of policy can be kept in force as long as you live.

The annual premium remains constant, but the policy's cash value increases as you pay into it. This cash value has many uses: You can reclaim it if you give up the policy.

You can use the cash value as collateral for a loan. Or you can use some of the cash value to pay premiums while continuing some whole-life insurance in a reduced amount.

Endowment This type of policy — more costly than other plans- — emphasizes the accumulation of money as well as insurance protection. After a set number of years or at a specific age, the endowment matures, paying the amount of the policy to the policyholder. If the policyholder dies before that time, the full amount is paid to the beneficary.

A choice. Which kind of policy is best for you depends upon your particular needs: Term insurance may be useful for young adults with children. Single people with no dependents may need little or no life insurance at all. Older Americans may find whole life more attractive.

(Check with your SPJST lodge sales representative and discuss our various plans and the best type of insurance for you.) *** Lead pollution can cause learning disabilities and reduced intelligence in children and, at high, levels, central-nervous-system disorders, mental retardation and even death, health officials warn. To minimize exposure: Clean up chips from lead based paint, which young children tend to chew. Dust and sweep frequently; lead accumulates in dust inside and outside the home, especially in urban areas. Remove food from cans after they have been opened; food in lead-soldered cans may contain up to 10 times more lead than nonciitned- procitiets:

When young children play outside, try to keep them from ingesting dirt, which may have high levels of lead. *** An estimated 250,000 "NuTone" brand ceiling fans manufactured since May 1, 1983, may need repairs to keep them from falling and causing injuries, warns the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The manufacturer, NuTone of Cincinnati, Ohio, has embarked upon a program to inspect the fans involved and to make any necessary repairs. Consumers in the continental U.S. with such fans should call (800) 543-8687. In Ohio, call (800) 582-2030. All others, write: NuTone, Madison and Red Banks Roads, Cincinnati, Ohio 45227, Attention: Paddle fans. Include your name, address and phone number. *** If gasoline is used in an area with poor ventilation, fumes can cause dizziness or irritated eyes, nose and throat, warns the Union Oil Company. Very high concentrations can result in headache, nausea, mental confusion, or—in extremely rare cases—vomiting, convulsions, coma and even death. To avoid problems: Try not to breathe fumes.

Keep your face away from any gascontainer opening. Use the fuel only where fresh air is plentiful. Keep containers closed when not in use.

Use gas only for motor fuel. Never overfill or top off a gas tank.

MEDITERRANEAN VACATIONS. Americans planning a trip to the sunny Mediterranean should fill out and carry currency declarations in countries where they are available, according to U.S. embassies in the area The declarations list all of the owner's currencies, traveler's checks and other valuables. They are used to 'deter black-market dealings — an increasing problem in countries such as Spain and Greece, where the dollar is at record highs and currency restrictions are tight.

If you can't produce such a document, customs officials could seize suspect purchases and even your remaining money as contraband.

GENERIC COPIES. I Consumers who take dozens of popular prescription drugs can expect to get big price breaks as a result of legislation about to clear Congress with the President's backing. The proposed law would greatly ease introduction of inexpensive generic copies of brand-name medications whose patent protection has expired. One sure target of generics: The tranquilizer Valium, which now sells for about 17 cents per pill. Generic versions of brand-name drugs initially sell for about one third less.

Expect the first of them within a year. *** Thinking of calling it quits? Before you can get a retirement check from Social Security, you must have credit for a certain amount of work covered by Social Security. The exact amount depends upon your age. If you reach age 62, for example, in this year, 1984, you need 8 1/4 years of work credit. But if you reach age 62 in 1991 or later, you will need 10 years of work credit.

The Ellinger Combo will provide the music for our dancing pleasure and the usual food and beverage will be served. Our Birthday Club Sisters ask that we assist them by providing pastry for the large attendance expected on Czech Day. Be sure to visit with us on that day and enjoy a baked turkey dinner and also the beautiful costumes which will be surrounding you. Our Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Club will also perform.

Tickets for the English comedy "A Pair of Country Kids" are now available. This will be presented November 18th. Watch for more information and keep that date reserved.

Brother Karl Lindemann reported for Sister Mildred Holman on behalf of the Board of Trustee& The Men's Club is beautifying our flower beds by spreading pine bark to help control the weeds.

It was very, nice to see Brother William Souchek with us. The Czech classes are in progress and if you are interested there is still space available. Jerry Shanks is our able instructor.

Our Benevolence chairman, Sister Mary Kosut, was back after being absent at the last meeting, due to illness, and gave us a two-month report. The large number of hours of charitable donations of time, and the hours of volunteer work by our Committee Members and Officers, is always impressive.

Sister Helmcamp, president of District V, reported that the District Family Day October 7th was a tremendous success. She thanked all who participated in making it such an enjoyable day.

Along with the ,,usual honors for our birthday and anniversary cele brants for the month, a very special person was singled out from the group and given extra good wishes.

Our very special member, Sister Frances Olexa, has reached the age of 85, and is still going strong.

Brother Ermis read the highlights of her SPJST life, reiterating the many offices and positions and accomplishments in behalf of our Order performed by Sister Olexa. A beautiful cake was served, after the meeting, in her behalf.

There were 127 members present this month. Be sure you are at the Nov. 12th meeting, at which certain preliminaries of the annual meeting in December will be covered.

Lodge Pokrok No. 88 Houston To Observe Czech Day October 28, 1984 We invite you to the annual Czech Day at Lodge No. 88 in Houston, Texas at 1435 Beall Street. This will be a day where Czech and other people in the community will have the opportunity to celebrate our heritage and culture. We invite everyone to join us in this celebration to make this a day to be remembered!

At 2:00 p.m., there will be a program at which time faithful and dedicated members will be honored, Romanian dancers will perform, the Czech Heritage Singers of Houston will sing, and the Sokol of Houston Gymnastic Group will perform.

At 5:00 p.m., there will be a parade of some of the finest Czech costumes in this area. After the parade the Vrazel's Orchestra will play for your dancing pleasure until 9:00 p.m., this will be a FREE dance!!

The Czech word `sousedska' means 'neighborly — get together and have fun. This is the intent of the Czech Day Festival. The members of Lodge Pokrok No. 88 say "vItitme vas do SPJST Mdu 88" which means, "Welcome you to Lodge No. 88" on this festival day or any other day!

In order to help preserve some of the traditions and customs of Czechoslovakia, we hold our annual Czech Day each year. We hope to help keep alive these customs and traditions.

Makes Large Contributions To Charities Academy

The Lodge 177 meeting of October 10 was called to order at 7:30 by President Louis Driska.

Roll call of officers revealed that all were present. The minutes from the last meeting was read by Recording Secretary Pat Tornastik and were approved as read.

There were 29 members present at the meeting.

On the sick list and not present again was Jean Driska; you are missed Jean, and the lodge is hoping that you will be able to attend the mcrthly meetings soon.

Veone May is home from the `hospital and doing well also Wilbur is doing well.

Supreme Lodge was about the Child Abuse Project changes.

There were two new members Harry Barber and Daniel A. Maresh; two transferees Kyle and Kris Kotrla from Lodge 47. Welcome all you new members!

There were 13 members in the youth club.

A sympathy card was sent to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Miller, and a get well card to Dona Keis.

There was no pertinent business in the trustees' report given by Bill Hutka.

For old business it was tentatively decided to have turkey and dressing at the Christmas Party, December 7th and all members attending to bring a covered dish. More on this later.

Walter Jezek gave a short talk about the Child Abuse Project.

Every month a check for $200 is given to Walter and Othen Jezek to be deposited in the First House Account from the "Bingo" fund.

School supplies were bought for the children. Also needed are books and a bookcase for these children.

Jessie and Harry Barber donated some books her children had; and for this, the lodge thanks them. Jessie has been a member of the lodge for a good many years then she went to a cold state and brought us Harry.

These two people are a welcome addition to our membership.

A motion was made to donate $500.00 to the Academy PTO to help on their playground equipment and it was further designated to have a special "Bingo" night to be held October 23rd.

President Driska appointed Jerry Tomastik and Phil Wedock, and Vice President Edward Bartek appointed Jackie Beek to the Nominating Committee.

All reports were given with the exception of ticket report Chairperson Frances Love who was absent.

Members try to attend the next meeting November 14 at 7:30 p.m., if you are not there we miss you.

A motion was made to adjourn; the meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

Our lodge was honored to have the Supreme Lodge officers attending, namely, President Howard Leshikar, Vice President Bernard Gebala and his wife, Evelyn, Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and wife, Betty and Legal Adviser Sidney Kacir. There were also four district directors present, namely, Ben Trcalek of District I, Sid Pokladnik and his wife, Justine of District III, Louis Hanus of District V and Thelma Hrncir with her husband, Eugene of District VII. Thank you for coming and making this a big day for Lodge 183.

Some of the Supreme Lodge officers had to leave early to catch a plane and go to Florida to attend the National Fraternal Congress; we hope they had a pleasant journey.

The members of Lodge 183 are truly grateful that they took time to come by to be with the members in their moment of joy. If any of you members missed this one, you missed one of the biggest events of the year and also a great meal.

Our members were saddened to hear that Dorothy Karl is back in the hospital, again; we hope you get well soon, Dorothy.

If I have missed anyone who may be in the hospital please forgive me because too many things have happened so fast this past few weeks that I have been trying to catch my shadow so to speak. If there are any more, please let me know and I will let the rest of the members know.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 89, Rosebud, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our lodge sister

FRANCES BACA, who passed away at a local hospital, September 23, 1984.

Services were held at the Green Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Loster officiating. Burial was at the Woodland Cemetery.

Sister Baca was born September 4, 1899, in Caldwell, Texas. She lived in the Rosebud area most of her life.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and SPJST Lodge No. 89 in Rosebud for 64 years.

Sister Baca was loved by all who knew her, she was a friendly person, always smiling and always had something nice to say about you.

Survivors include two sons, Leroy Baca of Rosebud and Frank Baca of Greenville; two daughters,'/Ars. Clarence Boettcher of Houston and Mrs. Jimmy Toler of Waco; a sister, Mrs. Rosa Malcik of Houston; ten grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bill Krause, Nick Halenka, W. D. Merecek, Mike Sammon, Harold Tepe and Bill Marecek.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of the Resolution Committee, of Lodge No. 88 Houston, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother FRANK C. BRAVENEC, who passed away September 29, 1984 in Houston.

He had been a resident of Houston, Texas for 63 years, a member of the Houston Brethren Church and a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 88.

Brother Bravenec retired from the First City National Bank after 43 years of service.

He is survived by his son, Frank R. Bravenec and his wife, two sisters, three brothers and 2 grandchildren; Richard Alan and Phyllis Ann Bravenec.

Services for Brother Bravenec were held Tuesday, October 2, at Woodlawn Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Ben Bravenec officiating, and interment was at Woodlawn Gardens of Memories.

Because products aimed at the calorie-conscious usually make nutritional claims on the label, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that the food label meet certain regulations, says the nutritionist.

"A key FDA distinction is between low-calorie' foods and 'reduced-calorie' foods," says Sweeten.

A food product can be labeled "low-calorie," "low in calories," or "a low calorie food," only if a serving has no more than 40 calories. Foods naturally low in calories, such as celery, may only be labeled a "lowcalorie food," she explains.

"Reduced-calorie" foods contain at least one-third fewer calories than an equivalent serving of the food for which they substitute. The label must list the calorie content of a serving of the "reduced-calorie" food, and a serving of the food for which it substitutes, Sweeten says.

Also, "reduced-calorie" food must be similar in nutrition and all sensory properties such as taste, smell and texture, to the food for which it substitutes.

But reduced-calorie foods are not necessarily low in calories, she notes.

According to the nutritionist, the meaning of other terms commonly seen on food product labels depends on whether the product makes claims for weight control. These terms include: • Light (lite) foods contain less of substances such as fat, sugar or alcohol (in the case of beer or wine), and they are usually lower in calories. When the term "light" represents a claim for weight control, these products must conform with regulations for low-or reduced-calorie foods.

• "Diet" or "dietetic" foods must comply with either the "low-calorie" or "reduced-calorie" food regulations or regulations for foods used for other dietary purposes, such as sodium reduction.

• Diabetic food product labels must state: "Diabetics: This product may be useful on your diet on the advice of a physician." If the food is not low-calorie or reduced-calorie, the label must state that fact.

• Formulated meal replacements such as special diet milk-shake type drinks cr frozen dinners, can be used in calorie control programs, but are not necessarily low in calories. For example, diet plan frozen meals may contain regular foods, but simply

limit calories with smaller portions.

Also, many meal replacements control calorie intake simply because they are eaten in place of a full meal.

• "Sugar-free" or "sugarless" foods may be labeled "low-calorie" or "reduced calorie" if they meet the requirements for those foods. Sugar free foods may contain sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, xylitol or mannitol, that have the same calories as sugar. These foods must state that the product is not for weight control. Foods that have substantial natural sugar content, such as fruit in fruit juices, may contain a factual statement that the food is unsweetened or contains no added sugar.

Buying special food products, isn't always the best way to reduce calories, says Sweeten. But if you do plan to include diet foods in your meals, compare them with the calorie counts for "regular" foods and read the labels carefully, recommends the nutritionist.

Adults Need Calcium Too COLLEGE STATION—Parents who tell their children to "drink your milk so you can have strong bones," should be telling themselves the same thing.

Adults who don't consume the recommended two servings of dairy products each day may not be getting enough calcium, says Dr. Alice Hunt, a nutritionist with the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service.

This lack of calcium can lead to serious health problems for people as they age, she says. For example, osteoporosis is a painful and crippling bone disease that occurs when bones become so thin and brittle they break every easily. It most often affects post-menopausal women with a history of calcium deficiency, explains Hunt.

Lack of calcium can also cause loss of the bone that supports your teeth, says the nutritionist. This may speed up peridontal disease which leads to a loss of teeth.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, which may lead to heart attacks or strokes, has also been associated with lack of calcium, says Hunt.

About 75 percent of the calcium in the American food supply comes from dairy products, so the obvious way to increase calcium is to eat more foods from this category, says the nutritionist.

Even if you don't find it very "adult" to drink a glass of milk with meals or you don't like the taste of milk, there are many other ways to add calcium to your diet with dairy products, Hunt explains.

In addition to eating a wellbalanced diet that includes foods from all the food groups, Hunt suggests the following for adults who want to add calcium to their diets: *Drink cocoa instead of coffee or tea. *Add cheese to sandwiches. *Snack on cheese and crackers. *Use milk instead of water to prepare canned soups. *Add nonfat dry milk to soups, stews and casseroles. *Use milk and cheese in casseroles.
