INNE=INN■lommimi , SL President Howard Leshikar is calling the lodges'/districts' attention involving youth club activities, not to plan anything at their level that would conflict with the STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT to be held March 23 and 24, 1985 at Lone Star Camp in La Grange.

The various leaders and interested persons attendance will be very essential because these individuals attending the retreat will be able to help with the functions to benefit the youngsters' needs. ***

Grand Opening September 29th is the date set for the Grand Opening and Dedication of Lodge 183, Mid-Cities' new lodge home on 3100 Pleasant Valley Lane in Arlington. In this issue the lodge has announced its dedication program, and we wish many of you endeavor-to attend and extend best wishes for a continued success. *** In this issue is a picture of Sister and Brother Ed Mazanec who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, along with their children, spouses and grandchildren at their ranch home (near Waco) where they spent most of their married life.

The editor feels this couple deserves recognition for their many years of promoting SPJST activities and participating actively at Lodge 66 (known as Linden Hall) which isn't too far from their place.

Brother Ed has helped and worked hard to avoid disbanding Lodge 66 in the 50s with his fellow officers. He has served as lodge officer, on the board, and served on the SPJST Publication Committee from 1968 until a few years ago when he resigned due to his wife's health.

Sister Mazanec has also devoted much time to the lodge by serving on the Cheer Committee for several years. She has encouraged and supported her husband all the way on his undertaking decisions; the ones who had worked with them closely, will agree that they are a deserving couple to be recognized.

This editor remembers Br. Mazanec well in his efforts to save Lodge No 66 and especially, for his steadfast stand on the Publication Committee in 1970 and 1972 in helping keep the Vestnik an independent publication thus keeping it a "free press." Many of our members remember those occasions.

On behalf of the Society and personal best wishes are in store for both of you for many years. *** Another young lady who deserves recognition is Frances F. McDonald, who is a student at University of Texas in Austin. (Refer to her picture and articlein this issue.)

The editor has observed this little lady grow up since 1969 and she was always seen attending SPJST functions in District VII and/or

WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL? A man is successful when he refuses to slander even his enemies; When he does not expect to get paid for everything he does: When he does not wait until tomorrow to do the things he might do today; When he is loyal to his Society and to his associates; When he intelligently cooperates with others, and is tolerant in thought and deed; When he studies constantly to prepare himself for a higher position financially and to rise in the estimation of his fellows. *** A great deal of criticism has been written about the use of euphemisms, the polite or kind way of phrasing a thought so that it will not offend or degrade a man.

However, there is much to be said in favor of the softer word. If you can give a man a sense of dignity and pride in his work by changing his title from janitor to custodian, do so.

If you can keep'your best workman from quitting by forbidding anyone in your department from calling him "Fatso," do so. There is an old nursery rhyme that we used to chant as children. Do you remember it? "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Do you not believe it? A broken bone will mend, but not so the spirit. *** New School laws. The students in Texas high schools are continually confronted with changes to improve the school systems, hoping it will he for the best to all concerned between the students and teachers.

The House Bill 72 that was passed was meant to aid in educational reform across our State of Texas, also it was designated to improve the quality of students graduating from Texas high schools.

There are parts of the bill that will aid the reform process (tutorial services, pay raises, plus other). But, other parts of the bill hinder the educational process and penalize those who are successful.

This year the bill made 70 the passing grade statewide. Before, many schools had 60 to 65 as their passing grade. Raising the passing grade may also be raising the failure rate and probably dropout rate. To avoid this, teachers may begin to score easier.

The HB 72 probably had the intention of encouraging students taking strict courses. This assumingly may give a student a second thought before signing up for mandate courses for fear of hindering one's eligibility to take part in extra-curricular affairs.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Plans Activities Dear Members, This cool Fall weather sure does feel good but we sure could use some rain.

After a delicious pot luck supper, President Ann Balusek called the regular monthly meeting to order by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. She welcomed our guests Lillie Zajicek, Ruby Cernosek, Suszanne Zajicek and a very big welcome to our newest and youngest member Tracy Lynn Za.jicek, little granddaughter of Joe and Lillie Zajicek. She really is a little doll.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Brother Anton Svetlik and Sister Valasta Kamenicky.

Roll call showed all officers present.

The minutes, committees' and officers' reports were approved as read.

The club voted to give a donation to the Little League Fund.

Sister Mary Posival was on the sick list, but she is feeling better now.

Everyone who came to our remodeling dance had such an enjoyable time, the club decided to have another big dance September 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. Please come and enjoy yourself, again, because everyone is most welcome. Door prizes will be given.

Our Fall Festival will be October 27th. The youth will have the spookhouse. ring toss, pan for gold and cakewalk.

There will also he a chili supper, plus a country store. so all you members bring some handmade items, canned goods, baked goods or some "white elephant" things.

These activities will start at 5:30 p.m. The King of Swing Band will play for our dance at 8:30 p.m.

Lodge 40 Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends: El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40, held its monthly meeting September 19, 1984. The meeting was called to order by President, James Kulcak at 7:45 p.m.

A minute of silent prayer for our departed members followed the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary, Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers. Financial Secretary was absent.

Minutes of the last meeting were accepted as recorded in the Vestnik.

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all accounts and bills paid.

Youth Leader Vlasta Bartosh reported on all the youth activities.

The youth attended camp this summer, went on an educational tour and participated in YAD. Jodie Henderson. Veronica Bartos and Sharon Borak represented our lodge in the Royalty Competition. The youth scrapbook came in first, at YAD. The Youth Club is pliinning skit for the upcoming District VI meeting and will be enjoying a day at the Texas Renaissance Festival.

It is wonderful to see our youth working together.

The District VI meeting will be held in Taiton. October 14th.

Please come. so our lodge will he well-represented.

New members are Mary Roeder Triska, Edith Marie Molberg and Joseph Percy Breaux. Welcome to you all.

President Kulcak received a communication from Temple on ii Child Abuse Benefit Program. He was then pleased to present Kimberly Vanek with a $500 scholarship, which she won through the Supreme Lodge in Temple. Kim. we are all very proud of you!

First Vice President Benny Reck reports he is still working on the vents.

We presently have eight sales representatives in our lodge. We have two new prospective sides representatives Ardis Bacak and Herman Ray Pilgrim. Sales repre sentatives are responsible for lodge growth, which stirs interest in the youth club.

The possible purchase of a new camera is being looked into Also. we are looking for a desk for the new office at the hall.

Clean-up Day will be October 6th at 8 a.m. All members are asked to participate. Meals and drinks will be furnished for the workers. With the new addition to the hall, a good spruce up is necessary, before the holiday season.

The parking lot is to be graveled and sodium lights to be installed.

There is no Christmas Party planned for this year, but 'a New Year's Eve Dance instead.

Refreshments were served following the meeting. Door prize was won by Dutch Kopecky.

Lodge 80, Holland Plans Polka Dance Dear Members and Friends of SPJST: Our regular monthly meeting was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 9th with President Bohac presiding.

(At present we are covered on our own.)

New members accepted to our lodge are Scott and Addie Bertrand, Dorothy Jean Spearman, Robert J. Spearman, Dorothy Rayetta Marie Spearman. Additional insurance was for Danny Hendrix and Isebela Kung. We welcome each 'of you to our fine organization and try to come to the meetings.

Speaking of our meetings, after each meeting we have a "Happy Hour" with all drinks free for one hour. Also, before each meeting each member puts his/her name in the pot and after the meeting we draw four names. Each name drawn is entitled to a 6-pak of beer or sodapop; three of these prizes are donated by the lodge and one by our generous President Bohac. I thought I would mention this maybe a lot of you members do not know how good you will be treated at the meeting; so try to come, and lot of times we have a good meal to go with the above mentioned activity.

A Sunday afternoon polka dance was discussed at this meeting. It was decided to hire a good polka hand. It will probably be some time in October; look for the announce ment in the dance calendar of the

Vestnik, and I will try to give you more details in my next letter.

Brother Willie Kohutek, newlyelected District II director, and his wife, Adeline, were our guests at the meeting. It was a pleasure having them present. Brother Kohutek spoke to us briefly which we all enjoyed listening to.

The lucky winners in the drawing were Rosie Jochets, Joe Barabas Jr., Glen Latham and Louise Ivicic. A prize was also given to Joe Barabas, Jr. who had a birthday in September.

We are still hot and dry in this part of the country. The cotton crop harvest is coming to an end; the crop was fairly good. We are about 11'/2 inches below normal with our rainfall in our area. A lot of the farmers are selling their cattle due to the feed shortage.

Needville Announces Meeting Date Lodge 81 met for its regular meeting September 12th at 7 p.m. with President Charlie Matcek presiding.

Sister Mary Matcek led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

All of the officers answered the roll call.

Sister Mary Werner read the minutes and also a card of thanks from the John Kolaja family for the memorial.

Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendal gave her financial statement. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel reported on the activities at the hall for the coming month and then gave his financial report. All reports were accepted.

On the sick list we have Dr. J. W. Kolaja Jr. who had been in the hospital but is at home. Also, Vlasta Hurta had eye surgery at the Caney

Valley Hospital at Wharton and is at home doing well. Valerian Matcek is still at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston, and Frank Barak is also in a Freeport hospital, last report. We hope all of you keep improving.

Gilbert Walzel reported, the oscillating fans have been purchased and soon will be installed and also the present SPJST sign is in the process of being improved and painted.

A motion was seconded to purchase a large mirror for the ladies' rest room. There was some discussion about all of the doors needing a paint job on the inside of the hall. No conclusion was reached.

Mary Matcek announced the upcoming "Family Day" at Lodge 88, October 7th and encouraged members to attend; bring a covered dish.

Checks were handed out and the attendance prizes were won by Gilbert Walzel and Jo Ann Morgan.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned.

Lodge 142, Houston Sets Important Meeting Date Sunday, September 9, 1984, our regular lodge meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Kieschnick at 2 p.m.

We had 39 members present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers was held by Secretary Alice Jochen. All officers were present at this meeting.

The secretary also read the minutes from the previous meeting which stood approved as read.

Under correspondence we had a very nice thank you note from the Michael Tumis family, thanking everyone for the check they received from the 1984 convention.

They are a very deserving family and we wish them well.

All officers' reports were read.

Sick Committee reported that Gary Behrens, Karen Schuze and Randy Southern are sick. We hope all these members are well and up by now.

Six new members and two additional insurance policies for July and August in the amount of $160,000 were written by our Sales Representative Sidon Tumis. We welcome these new members, namely, Larry John Kopecky, Jared L. Kopecky, Karen L. Kopecky, Marianne Beiersdorfer, George Regmund, Jackie Warner, Bruce A. Roemer and Amy Zajicek.

Our president recognized Mr. and Mrs. August Schank and we welcome them back to our lodge.

New business consisted of our president stating that we had looked into a number of pieces of property within moving distance. We will

vote on this matter in the October 14th meeting. Members are urged to come and vote.

New business: Sister Tillie Helmcamp asked that we announce our District V Family Day at Lodge 88 and to bring a covered dish of salad, vegetable or cake and serving time will be 12:30 p.m., October 7th; also bring a donation of crafts, quilts or hobbies to diplay if you have any.

Capsule drawing for $15 was for George Matura who was absent. In October the drawing goes to $20.

Little Fred Buri, 5-year-old, was the winner for the youngest member present for a $5 prize.

Door prizes went to Adela Stein, Rosie Tumis, Frank Tumis and Lawrence Schilhab.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m. which followed by a meal of hamburgers and all the trimmings and refreshments. It's always a nice surprise at these Sundays' meetings.

The next meeting will be on the second Sunday, October 14 at 2 p.m.

Festival For Lodge Pasadena

Family

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 172 is again participating in the Family Festival, Sunday, October 7, 1984 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. in the Mall at Pasadena Town Square.

We were, approved to have a Food Booth with proceeds to benefit our lodge. We will be selling whole (not sliced) cakes, pies, kolache by the dozen; we will sell coffee, too. No food booth will be duplicated, those are rules set up by the Festival Committee. If you send something else we will not be able to sell it because someone else will have that to sell, assigned to them. This is an easy way to make some money for the lodge, so please come by if only to drop off your food at our booth at noon.

Last year we sold out of everything in about 2 hours. We needed more to sell. We took in $316 for the lodge. We sold cakes from $5 on up to $7 and $8; if they were large, homemade and pretty, we could have sold twice as much. I am saying this for those of you who don't know what happens to your cakes. Your help in this would be appreciated because that is about the only way for this to become a successful undertaking. Make plans how to get your baked goods to the Pasadena Town Square Mall or to a friend's house for someone to take to the hall for you.

We need lots to sell. The crowds of people were very large. We are expecting even larger crowds. The admission is free. The Family Festival is'being sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Committee of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce in an effort to provide an afternoon of family fun and entertainment for all ages. Only food, homemade or handcrafted items will be sold; no items may be sold by tickets in the booths and a special area will be reserved for senior citizen booths. Entertainment will be provided free during the afternoon. There will be a total of 100 booths and twelve of those

Ladies, members and friends of our lodge, the more you bake the more money we can make for the lodge.

If the lodge already has enough money to buy that new piano, we also need some items for our lodge kitchen. DON'T FORGET OCTOBER 7TH IS THE DATE! Also, members please don't forget to keep records of all the good deeds for 1984: keep up with it or you will forget what all you really did. I will call for them sooner than you think.

Warrenton Schedules Variety Shoot Dear Members: Thursday night. September 13.

1984 at 8 p.m., Lodge 179 held their regular monthly meeting with President Harold Bergmann presiding, who also led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and correspondence. Brother Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Roth readings were accepted as given.

Then the members heard a favorable report from our financial secretary, Brother Peters.

Ralph Beard, chairman of the previous variety shoot, also had a very favorable report. So. after brief discussion, it was decided to have a variety shoot at Eichler's Drive Inn for Sunday, October 14 at 1:30 p.m. with the same committee serving.

The president expressed thanks and appreciation for all who helped at the previous shoot, made posters, or helped in any way to have made this a successful event.

The various entertainment or events for the remainder of the year were briefly discussed, and definite plans will he finalized later.

A Serving Committee for October, November and December were appointed which are composed of: Arnold and Lydia Peters. Nelda Wunderlich and Loraine Kneip. This committee stated the lodge will furnish hot dogs for our October 11th meeting at 8 p.m. Members may bring sweets or chips to help complete the menu.

With no further business the members enjoyed cold cuts, deviled eggs, pickles, delicious cake, pies and chips to go along with our refreshments.

Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Club Report Wednesday, September 12, 1984 President Pearl Hanka called the meeting to order and she read a great poem called, "Today Is Here."

Sister Rosalee Kostom read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Sister Lillie Spies gave the treasurer's report and it was a good one.

Sunshine reporter Sister Mary Kosut is in the hospital receiving treatments on her neck. We hope she is out and feeling better very soon.

The sisters who were ill and could not be at the meeting were Emily Bily, Stella Bukowski, Willie Mae Stang and Edna Froelich.

The sisters want to thank Sam Scott for donating the ice-cream for Wednesday's dinner, which was good with the cake.

Hostesses for September were Sisters Josephine Bishop, Ardith McCullen, Bessie Vasula and Martha Baxter. Thanks to these ladies for doing a fine job.

We made welcome after an absence of several meetings Agnes Reznicek and Rose Million. Mrs. Million has a cast to immobilize her left hand, which she broke while visiting her friends in Calif.

Mary Kubala and Frank Tesar are both out-patients of St. Joseph's Hospital after being confined there for a short stay. Anna Johnston is walking much better after having foot surgery. We wish these members a full recovery in the near future.

Don and Pauline have recently returned from a Jamaica cruise, which was their 25th wedding anniversary gift to themselves.

Charlie and Martha Kocian of Dallas will celebrate their golden anniversary October 6th with a Mass of Celebration, followed by cocktails, dinner and dance at the Dallas Catholic Czech Club.

Finally. Frank and Mary Tesar of Ft. Worth will celebrate their 45th anniversary' October 15th with a dinner and dance at SPJST Lodge No.92.

We express our sincere sympathy to the JoSeph Becan family for the loss of their father. grandfather and great-grandfather. who passed away September 10th. He was the last living charter member of SPJST_No. 92 and also a charter member of Sokol Ft. Worth. One of his sons.

Robert Becan and his wife. Bernice. are on a two-week Pilgrimage tour to Rome. We know they will have an interesting and adventurous trip.

The Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle meet September 13. 1984 at the Ennis Sokol Hall as usual. Forty members attended the meeting and everyone was cordially greeted by President Sadie Kuhin.

The minutes were read and approved. After the treasurer's report we all sang Czech songs. We also said the Pledge of Allegiance.

Then our President gave everyone a chance to say fun things whoever wished to. For a moment we were a gay, laughing group which was very good for everyone.

Mrs. Liddie Pavelka celebrated 50th golden wedding anniversary so she was presented flowers from our club and the Dallas Club by Anne Zvolanek.

Birthday wishes for September went out to Mary Petrick. Doris Foit. Albie Nesuda. Wilma Jelinek. and Mary Szensay.

Ann Zvolanek invited all members of the club to come to the Czech Day at the fair in Dallas next month.

Bertha Podhradsky reported that the Budvarka Band of Czechoslo vakia will he at the West Auditorium. A quilt was quilted for Georgia Rose Morales and a quilt to he quilted is scheduled for Alice Roberts for October meeting. We already made plans for our Thanks giving dinner in November. We will have that good roasted chicken like last year and also beef goulash as some of you requested.

The door prizes were brought by Ella Zmolek and Mary Bouska. The Panda Plant was won by Sadie Kuhin and the large hag of onion sets went to Alice Roberts. If anyone else needs onion sets Mary Bouska reported to me that Charlie had like 2 tub fulls at home. Hope we have another big crowd next month and. hopefully we all will get that much needed rain by then.

Circle of Czech Women-Dallas On a beautiful Indian Summer-like morning twenty-seven members were in attendance at our September 6th meeting. President Ann Zvolanek welcomed everyone and introduced guests George Skotak, Elvin Elsik, John Trojacek, Bob Zvolanek, Julius Podhrasky and Marguerite Christi.

Ann also recognized Rose Noska, Evelyn Trojacek, Bertha Podhrasky and Libby Slovak who have not been with us for some time.

Greetings were received from Sisters Ella Bartos, Martha Malooly, Marie Petrik and Mary Nesuda. We were happy to hear that Frankie Curry, Frances Sparks and Frances Konakovsky are doing better. We want the sisters who are recovering from an illness or operation to know that even though they are not with us at meetings we certainly have them with us in our thoughts and hearts.

Alice Roberts read the minutes of our August 2nd meeting. The treasurer's report was made by Vickie Kohn.

Correspondence Secretary Helen Vrla read "Thank You" notes from Frances Konakovsky, Martha Vrla (for Anna Brown), Helen Parma and F'rankie Curry. Correspondence was received from United Way and brochures on Assaults against women.

Adelle Vlk sent "Get Well" wishes to: Helen Parma, Mary Nesuda, Hattie Hamusek. and Stanley Slovak (Libby's husband). Flowers were brought to Georgia Long.

CYCLONE YOUTH CLUB TO DISCUSS ACTIVITIES Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 24 Youth Club was held at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, September 12, 1984. In attendance we had twenty-six members and three guests, Chris McNeill, Kenny McNeill and Brent Vanicek, present.

There was no old or unfinished business so we went into new business. We are selling Christmas candles, ornaments, teddy bears, thermometers, and memo notes to raise money for our Youth Club. We will be selling these products until October 9 or until our next youth Meeting.

Also, under new business, we are planning a Halloween Party for October 28th. We will discuss this more at our next meeting.

Our District II Skating Party also will be held September 30 at Skate Haven in Temple, from 5 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. Please make this party and bring a friend.

Members who were present with birthdays this month were Michael Harvell (September 7), and Alan Haisler (September 3). Happy Birthday to both of you!

Door prizes were won by Tracey Chervenka and Cody Gotcher.

Our youth club has been very busy for the past couple of months.

LODGE 40 YOUTH CLUB MET RECENTLY The El Campo-Hillje Youth Club held their meeting at the American Legion Auxiliary Hall. September 6, 1984.

Willie A. Fojt, 87, of Moulton, died Sunday morning July 15, 1984 at 8:30 a.m. in a Flatonia nursing home, where he was a resident since Jan. 6, 1981.

A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Monday. July 16 at the Smith Funeral Home in Moulton with Vicar Jarma Pesonen of Shiner officiating.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 17 at the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. E. J. Oehlke of Shiner officiating. Burial followed in Moulton City Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the American Legion and VFW Posts.

The flag was presented to Mrs. Willie A. Fojt by Commander Milton Kunkel.

Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons: Mark Darilek, James Buesing, Fred, Jr. and Paul Siegel, Randy and Scott Fojt, Wayne and John Fojt.

Mr. Fojt was born April 1, 1897 at Bila Hora, Lavaca County. Texas. son of John and Anna (Marek) Fojt. He

was baptized July 4, 1897 in the Vsetin Brethren Church and as a youth was confirmed in the same church. He attended the Bila Hora School.

He was a veteran of World War I having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 184, Moulton.

On Oct. 18, 1921, he was married to Bessie Marie Motal at Hallettsville.

The couple resided at- Breslau.

Witting and Charlottenburg, before moving to the Moulton area.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bessie Fojt of Moulton; three daughters, Mrs. Leonard G. (Willie Mae) Darilek, Mrs. Oscar (Anita) Buesing, both of Shiner, Mrs. Fred (Dorothy) Siegel of Wharton; a son.

William H. Fojt of Shiner; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Erwin W. Fojt. July 26. 1971; his father, in 1948; his mother, in 1934; five brothers, Charlie Fojt, Dec. 19, 1966; Frank Fojt. Dec. 13, 1976; Emil A. Fojt, Sept. 14, 1979; John L. Fojt.

Apr. 6, 1955; Victor H. Fojt. Nov. 28.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 92, in Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of JOSEPH BECAN, who passed away Monday, September 10, 1984 in his 92nd year in a Fort Worth nursing home.

Brother Becan's parents were Czechoslovaks who were granted a homestead in the Ukraine by the Czar of Russia. Becan was born in Zalesy, "the Ukraine. The family moved to Rowena in 1906 and began farming, but a drought forced them to seek work in Fort Worth a year later. Brother Becan worked at a Fort Worth packing plant and then spent 14 years at Ford Motor Co. in Dallas. He then became a salesman for Vidmar's and Taystee Pie CoMpanies, and later retired.

Brother Becan was the last living charter member of SPJST Lodge 92.

He also belonged to KJT Lodge and the Sokol.

Brother Becan was preceded in death by his wife, Aloise (Slovak) Becan.

Survivors are sons, Jaromir and Robert Becan, Fort Worth, Daniel Becan. Reno, Nevada, Alfred Becan, Rosenberg; daughter, Mrs. James Philpot, El Paso; 28 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Frank Becan. Fort Worth.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Wednesday at Harveson and Cole Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 13 ;1!

Miss McDonald's Many Outstanding Achievements Frances F. McDonald, 1982 Tuloso-Midway High School graduate, has been accepted into the Golden Key National Honor Society.

She is a junior Microbiology major at the University of Texas at Austin.

Golden Key is a national honor society founded to recognize and encourage academic excellence among junior and senior men and women in all undergraduate fields of study. Membership is based solely upon scholastic achievement and is by invitation only, bestowing honor upon each Collegiate member.

Frances also qualified for the Dean's Honor List in the College of Natural Sciences last spring, semester. The Dean's list is the University's mechanism for identifying excellent academic achievement.

Frances's grade point average is 3.82 gave her the status as Cum Laude Ampla et M tgna and placed her in the upper 1.5 percentile of the 5,589 students enrolled in the College of Natural Sciences for the spring semester.

In additiGn, these acztdemic achievements have quilified her for the University of Texas' Kappa Upsilon Chapter of the National Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society This is an honor society for major, of biology, zoology, botany and microbiology. Sixty Years Together Mr. and Mrs. Edward G. Mazanec, Sr. were honored for their Sixtieth Anniversary August 11, 1984, with a barbecue "picnic type" dinner at their ranch east of Waco, Texas. Hosting the celebration were their children and grandchildren. Due to other obligations in October, a date in August was set so everyone could attend.

Edward and Agnes (Jezek) Mazanec exchanged their wedding vows October 22, 1924, at St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West, Texas, with Msgr. Pelnar officiating.

They made their first home on Route 9, in the Concord Community, Waco, Texas, and lived there for all their married years.

Kimberly Kay Riha Marries John Franklin Alexander St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Victoria was the setting Saturday at 3 p.m. for the double ring wedding vows which united Kimberly Kay Riha of Victoria and John Franklin "Jeff" Alexander of Cuero in marriage. The Rev. Carl Westbrook solemnized the couple's Vows.

Miss Riha is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Riha of Victoria. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Alexander of Cuero.

Mrs. Cynthia Bauer, organist, played the traditional bridal processional and recessional and accompanied James Fawcett, soloist, who sang "The Lord's Prayer," "Evergreen" and "We've Only Just Begun."

Given in marriage by her father, Miss Riha wore a formal organza and Chantilly lace wedding gown.

The bodice held a Queen Anne neckline, edged with a double border of sheer ruffling and re-

embroidered with seed pearls.

Beaded embroidery was repeated on the fitted bodice. The sheer lace bishop sleeves were gathered into ruffled cuffs at the bride's wrists.

The skirt, trimmed with Chantilly lace, fell to a border of ruffles and swept into a chapel length train.

A Camelot cap, overlaid with remembroidered French Alencon lace and sprinkled with seed pearls, caught the bride's waltz length veiling of imported silk illusion, edged with Chantilly lace. Miss Riha wore a diamond pendant, a gift from her parents, and carried a cascade ofwhite silk open roses, stephanotis, jasmine and baby's breath, accented with burgundy sweetheart roses and bell flowers.

Kristin Riha attended her sister as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Lisa Linley and Janis Buchhorn, niece of the groom.

Kyra Turley, niece of the bride, was the flower girl. Ring bearers

included Phillip Alexander, son of the groom, and Sara Harper. Miss Turley and Miss Harper wore formal white gowns.

The attendants wore halos of pink flowers, accented with pink and burgundy ribbons, in their hair and carried burgundy and gray carnations, accented with greenery and burgundy and pink ribbons.

Danny Bennett served as best man. Groomsmen included Wesley Boyd Alexander Jr., brother of the groom, and Stephen Craig Riha, brother of the bride. Ushers were Harold Meyer and John Mateck.

A reception was held in the fellowship hall of the church following the wedding and was followed by a barbecue held at the VFW Hall in Victoria. Following wedding travel to Dallas. the couple will reside in Cuero.

Miss Kabela Weds Steve Budaus Cynthia Ann Kabela and Steve Budaus exchanged double ring wedding vows uniting them in marriage at 3 p.m. Saturday in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Victoria. The Rev. Grunke officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Kabela of Victoria.

The groom is the son of Ann I3udaus, also of Victoria.

Eugenie Littlefield, organist, played "We've Only Just Begun," "Annie's Song," "My Sweet Lady," "Let It Be Me," "Just You and I," "You Light Up My Life," "Endless Love," "You Needed Me" and traditional processional and recessional.

She accompanied Stephen Fuhrman, soloist, who sang "The Lord's Prayer," "Wedding Song" and "God, A Woman and A Man." Given in marriage by her father. the bride wore a formal gown fashioned of white chiffon over taffeta. The fitted bodice held a Queen Anne neckline, edged with Chantilly lace and pearls. The bishop sleeves were caught at the wrists with ruffles of Chantilly lace. The natural waistline was outlined with lace. The formal skirt fell to slipper length. Tiers of ruffles enhanced the front of the skirt, which extended into a cathedral length train.

Miss Kabela wore a triple-tiered veil of illusion, finished with Chantilly lace and held by a Juliet cap, overlaid with matching lace and pearls. Her jewelry was a diamond pendant and earrings, gifts from the groom.

In some cases this IIR has eliminated students to schedule their activities after school or on Saturda y's. We hope' this .system will not affect our active SPJST youth club members: There are students who may participate in other activities while still maintaining passing grades.

These students are faced with -xhoosing one activity over another when they could before do more activities without over-extending themselves. We couldn't blame the' parents if they felt that MI 72 actually penalizing. this type ..of student. . This remains to he seen whether the HR 72 will upgrade education in Texas. We wonder. if this can be done without discouraging the already successful student. It was so true when the newscommentator said recently: The students in this generation are living under heavy strain, stress, and have to compete on a much broader scale than their parents did during high school days. ***
